The Dead South
Friday 5 april 2024.
The Dead South made an emphatic statement with their sold out, debut tour of Australia and New Zealand in 2023. Now, the 4-piece band plots a return to Aotearoa in April 2024 that includes a return to Auckland at the Powerstation .
The band recently sold out their debut at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN, where they premiered new songs to a packed house. Filmed for later release, their world-class performance was a milestone moment in their remarkable story, which has taken them from the Canadian prairies to iconic stages around the world.
Over three full-length albums and 2022’s double EPs, The Dead South have won major awards in Canada, hit Gold and Platinum certification in Canada and the USA, and built a global community of fans. With a banjo, mandolin, cello and guitar, a whistle and a kick drum, The Dead South have done bluegrass their way from day one.
The Dead South have never been about constant reinvention, but about full commitment to their own singular way. With confidence in their sound and style and trust in each other, The Dead South arrive at the cusp of explosive global success in an enviable, and well-earned, position: total autonomy. It doesn’t really matter what you call their music - progressive bluegrass, alternative Americana, country, folk and western, what matters is that this is theirs, and people from all different backgrounds, beliefs, experiences, languages and ages love it.
True blue right through, The Dead South don’t shy away from ruffling traditionalists’ feathers from time to time, as they flawlessly execute banjo rolls and lightning-fast mandolin tremolos, 3-part harmonies and songs of classic themes -murder ballads, disloyalty, ghosts and the like, all with a wink and a smile. As they continue their climb to the top, The Dead South have learned an important lesson: If you’re going to be outsiders, you’d better be great.
Confirmed by the passion of their Dead South cosplaying fans, who go to concerts in the band’s signature look, this four-piece acoustic set from the middle of the Canadian prairies have found their people. Good Company, as they call themselves, is a global community of vastly dissimilar folks who might not see eye to eye, but who stand shoulder to shoulder at the gigs.

LIVE NATION PRESENTS
The dead south - sold out, event details.
Off the back of their sold out One For The Road tour of Australia & New Zealand, finger-picking four-piece The Dead South return Down Under for a run of headline shows in 2024.
With banjo, mandolin, cello and guitar, The Dead South certainly look the part of bluegrass traditionalists. But, as outsiders to the bluegrass world by circumstances of geography, they’re from the Canadian prairies, and by influences, equal parts finger-picking and punk, there are few comparisons to be made for the four-piece acoustic band. With a global following sparked by YouTube, early success in German rock clubs and now, sold out shows at iconic venues in many continents, this is no country for old-time string purists.
A brotherhood first and foremost, formed in university and forged on the road, The Dead South are quite comfortable in their role as a total anomaly most everywhere they go. Their progressive, tightly-constructed approach to acoustic music that favours intricate solos and harmonies has brought two JUNO Awards for Traditional Album of the Year, the most recent for the Muscle Shoals-made Sugar & Joy (2019). The Dead South followed up in 2020 with Served Live, a double live album that celebrated and supported the live music industry in a time of crisis.
With their newly-released double EPs Easy Listening for Jerks, Parts I & II, The Dead South find their own balance between their punk origins and the bluegrass world of their sound. A strong statement about identity, influence and inspiration, the new EPs show a band stepping out into new musical territory while also staying true to themselves.

The Dead South Tour Dates – Aus NZ
by Greg McGrath | 16 Feb, 2024 | 0 comments
The 4-piece just played live on the infamous Grand Ole Opry in Nashville to mark the launch of their album. The group is heading to Australia as a part of their massive international tour, Chains & Snakes, which will cover North America, Australia, and Europe throughout 2024.
The 2024 International tour is to promote their new album Chains & Snakes. One of the tracks from the new album Completely, Sweetly , an instant fan favourite from the new album, The Dead South fold a banjo riff until it transforms into doom metal, like Metallica served up string band style. The grudge-powered song, an album highlight, reaches deep into the highs and lows that come with moving beyond betrayal.
Yours To Keep, the source of the album title, arrives with a video that finds the band in an alternate dimension with mystery potions and dancing demagogues, like The Grand Budapest Hotel but set in Saskatchewan. Yours To Keep was directed by Two Brothers, the team behind videos for In Hell I’ll Be In Good Company , You Are My Sunshine and Diamond Ring , from the band’s impressive catalogue.
Australian Tour Dates:
Perth, AU: Metropolis Fremantle, Mar 20 Adelaide, AU: Hindley Street Music Hall, Mar 21 Melbourne, AU: Forum Melbourne, Mar 23 Melbourne, AU: Forum Melbourne, Mar 24 Brisbane, AU: Fortitude Music Hall, Mar 26 Tyagarah, AU: Byron Bay Bluesfest, Mar 29 Sydney, AU: Enmore Theatre, Apr 2 Sydney, AU: Enmore Theatre, Apr 3

THE DEAD SOUTH first-ever Australian & NZ Tour
Touring east coast + tas in january 2023.
8 December 2022 The Rockpit
Canadian folk-bluegrass 4-piece, The Dead South are making their debut live appearance in Australia in January 2023 playing to over 11,000 fans across the country.
Propelled by the momentum of over 900M streams across streaming platforms, a platinum-certified album (Canada), a gold-certified single (USA), two Canadian JUNO Award wins, airplay on acclaimed series Umbrella Academy and American Gods, SOLD OUT tours worldwide with performances at iconic live destinations including Glastonbury, Brixton Academy, and Red Rocks Amphitheater, they offer a highly nonconformist, hugely entertaining take on the traditional string band sound.
Proof of their strong international fan base is evident in their consistently sold-out shows to thousands across North America and Europe in their most recent 58-stop 2022 tour.
The summer announcement of their first-ever Australian and New Zealand was met with an overwhelming response. Completely SOLD-OUT, they have since added additional stops and upgraded venues to accommodate the demand.
“We’ve waited long enough – Australia, let’s do this. . . Can’t wait to say hello to all of our friends down under,” – The Dead South
With an Australian tour spanning NSW, VIC, QLD and TAS their 7 stop tour will be playing at esteemed venues such as The Enmore Theatre (NSW), Northcote Theatre (VIC) and Fortitude Music Hall (QLD) to name a few.
The Dead South will bring their ensemble of banjo, mandolin, cello and guitar to southern shores, sharing their interpolation of the bluegrass genre by morphing punk, rock and acoustic elements for an electrifying and unparalleled live performance. A brotherhood formed in University and forged on the road, their music is defined by intricate solos and harmonies traversing themes of identity, influence and inspiration.

The Dead South sell out AU & NZ tour and share favourite slang
- January 16, 2023
- The Dead South
Canadian bluegrass four-piece The Dead South are heading to Australia and New Zealand for the first time ever this month, supported by The Hooten Hallers . The sold-out tour will see the beloved band play seven shows back to back up the East Coast, returning to Northcote Theatre in Melbourne before two shows at Auckland. Due to popular demand, a second show at Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane on 26 Jan was recently added (get your tickets HERE ).
Their highly-anticipated debut live appearance Down Under comes after a largely sold-out 58-date North America and Europe tour in 2022. It’s a wonder they haven’t visited sooner since Australia ranks in their highest streaming demographics; Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne take out their second, third and fourth most popular cities by monthly streams worldwide.
To get in the mood for the tour, The Dead South have offered to share some of their favourite Aussie slang terms and phrases.
Crikey – Do people actually say this?
Barbie – When I was a kid, I thought people were talking about putting a shrimp on top of a Barbie doll.
Arvo – I still have no idea what an arvo is. An afternoon? An argument? An event?
One for the Road – We say this one in Canada too, so we named our tour after this phrase.
The Dead South are an ensemble of banjo, mandolin, cello, guitar and catchy vocals with a twang, combining elements of rock and folk with a modern twist. With a platinum-certified album (Canada), gold-certified single (USA) and two Canadian JUNO Award wins, the quirky quartet have also received airplay on blockbuster TV shows Umbrella Academy and American Gods and performed at iconic venues Brixton Academy and Red Rocks Amphitheater .
Renowned for their electrifying performances, the overwhelming support for the One for the Road Tour proves that this is not a show you want to miss.
