Star Trek: The History Of The Vulcans, Explained

The history of this classic Star Trek race is wrought with unexpected violence and emotion.

Out of the many races and cultures present within the Star Trek universe, one of the most stable and memorable has to be the Vulcans. Sure, the hive-minded Borg and the honor-bound, forehead ridged Klingons play important roles throughout the franchise, but it is the steady guiding hands of the Vulcans who seem to always have humanity's back. Despite the strict adherence to logic that defines much of their culture and nature, their history has been turbulent, especially when taking into account their sister species the Romulans .

Unlike the Klingons, who have changed appearance several times over the course of the franchise's TV shows and films, the physical appearance of the Vulcans has more or less stayed the same since Gene Roddenberry’s pioneering, space faring vision: The Original Series . Their pointed ears and stylish, upwards-veering eyebrows have continued as a staple through the show, despite being originally designed to avoid costly prosthetics and make up. Like most life in the universe, the Vulcans are also humanoid in appearance .

RELATED: Star Trek Villains Who Don't Get Enough Love

When exploring Vulcan history, it’s important to include the Romulans. These two species are incredibly different in nature, but share a striking resemblance to one another physically. During The Original Series, audiences discover, alongside the crew of the enterprise, that Vulcans and Romulans really are not too dissimilar at all, as they are both descended from the same ancient ancestors. Their divergence took place before the Vulcans adopted their characteristic obsession with logic and reason.

The ancient Vulcans were an emotionally charged, warlike species, who desired to conquer the stars. They were a barbaric race, who was starting to buckle under its own weight. Through their unquenchable passion and emotion, they were on a slippery slope to extinction. This was until the 3rd millennium BC, when a few ancient Vulcans began to try and suppress their emotion. However, they were still in the minority, seen more as a religious cult rather than people to be taken seriously. The majority of Vulcans still were fueled by emotion, violence, and passion. By the 9th Century BC, Vulcans had discovered warp capabilities, but due to their technological advancements being so far ahead of the rest of the galaxy, they were mostly alone — which, due to their colonization habits, was probably a good thing.

Everything changed, however, during what is known as the “Time of Awakening,” which occurred during the 4th Century. At this time, the planet Vulcan was being torn apart by its inhabitants, who were constantly at war with one another. They had begun to drop nuclear bombs , as well as using a device called the Stone of Gul, which would amplify the target's violent emotions to the point where they would see red, and go on a blind rampage. Out of all this bloodshed, however, there appeared a Vulcan philosopher called Surak, who had adopted a lifestyle led by logic over emotion, teaching his followers around Vulcan his philosophy. He grew more and more popular, until his observations and teachings were recorded in what equates to the Vulcan holy book: the Kir’Shara.

Despite all the odds, Surak’s teachings mostly stuck, and swept across their home world until order had been restored once more to the Vulcan people. No longer driven by emotion, they lost interest in conquering and destroying one another, indeed looking both to the stars and within themselves for enlightenment. As Spock himself states , “Only the discipline of logic saved my planet from extinction.”

Not everyone adopted Surak's views, however. The minority who refused to forsake their emotions for logic fought hard to keep their barbaric way of life, until they were eventually forced out from their home world. These outcasts were the ancestors of the Romulans, who carried on their violent ways.

After the destruction and near annihilation of their home, it took the Vulcans a long time to rebuild. They focused on healing their planet and developing further their quest for reason, but after approximately 1500, years they returned to the skies. After all this time, there was a lot more happening among the stars. Cultures on other planets had developed and evolved enough to make things interesting for the space-faring Vulcans. They aligned with the Andorians, and the Tellarites, and eventually, on April 5th 2063, they made first contact with humans. The Federation and Starfleet were born soon afterward, and the rest is history.

Vulcan history is being added to in vast quantities as more and more iterations into the franchise appear, but this is the streamlined version of what brought the Vulcans from a warmongering race to the oddly lovable stoic figures seen today. Through Spock, they made their way into audiences' hearts, epitomizing the notion of a hard exterior with a soft core.

The T’Plana-Hath comes with the standard stand and base that accompanies all Eaglemoss models, though the design of the ship as a lander means that stand itself seems unnecessary. The model looks fine placed directly on a shelf.

The stand for the Surak , which seems more appropriate to use, is unfortunately not very secure. First off, do pay attention to the instructions for where the stand clips to the ship. I initially had the clip attaching to the back of the keel and facing forward, which caused the model to tilt forward into an undesirable position.

Moving the clip to the correct position — onto the front of the keel, facing backwards — does fix the problem of the drooping model, but the uneven weight distribution of the model means it still wants to slide out, just in the other direction. Thankfully, the design of the shuttle means it can still be displayed without needing to use the stand.

vulcan star trek ship

The accompanying magazine paired with the T’Plana-Hath includes an extensive history of the development of the ship and is filled with excellent drawings by designer John Eaves, and the magazine for the Surak includes a similar design history of the shuttle — as well as large, detailed photos of the original filming model taken by Douglas Trumbull’s VFX team.

Both models are striking additions to the Official Starships Collection , and if you’re a fan of the logical race, these Vulcan ships are a welcome addition to the Star Trek fleet.

To bring these models home to your own armada, you can order the  T’Plana-Hath lander at Hero Collector’s US webshop for $49.99 , and in the UK for £27.99. For the Surak long-range shuttle, the US shop has it in stock for $49.95, while available in the UK for £30.99.

How Star Trek: First Contact Found A Replacement For Glenn Corbett's Zefram Cochrane

Star Trek: First Contact Zefram

In Jonathan Frakes' 1996 film "Star Trek: First Contact," the U.S.S. Enterprise travels back in time to the year 2063, the year humanity first invented faster-than-light travel and, almost immediately thereafter, made first contact with an alien species. By "Star Trek" lore, the maiden voyage of the Phoenix, the very first warp-capable ship, caught the attention of a passing Vulcan vessel, causing them to change course, land on Earth, and shake hands with humans. It was the franchise's "Welcome to the neighborhood" moment. It also started a massive utopian rebuilding of Earth, as it had just survived several devastating wars. By "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's estimation, Earth had to almost destroy itself to have a "moment of clarity." After that, the technological, post-war, post-scarcity, post-capitalist utopia could begin.

The inventor of warp drive was Zefram Cochrane, who fashioned his ship out of a disused bomb casing. In "First Contact," Cochrane was portrayed by James Cromwell as an irascible drunk who only aims to invent warp engines as a way of making money and retiring to a remote island filled with naked women. He's a humorous figure who, after talking to the Enterprise crew from the future, appreciates the magnitude of his discovery.

"First Contact" was not the first time Cochrane appeared on "Star Trek." In the original series episode "Metamorphosis" (November 10, 1967), the character was unexpectedly discovered on a distant planet, somehow alive a century after he would have died of old age. It seems he was granted eternal life by an ineffable energy being. In "Metamorphosis," Cochrane was played by Glenn Corbett.

According to a 2021 article by The Hollywood Reporter , the makers of "First Contact" needed someone very unlike the matinee-idol-handsome Corbett, as this Cochrane was going to be unrefined and unenlightened. Cromwell was their man.

Post-Babe territory

Initially, the casting directors floated some of their dream actors for Cochrane, including Tom Hanks. Hanks had just won Oscars for "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump," so he would have been an expensive name to land for a "Star Trek" movie, but producer Ron D. Moore liked the dream. Sadly, he admitted:

"It never got that far. [...] At that point in the process, there are lots of names on a wishlist for many, many reasons. I'm sure his name was floated in some capacity, but it was never really on the table."

Hanks would likely have played the part well, but Cromwell made it his own. And while Hanks may have been too "big" at the time, the filmmakers ran into a similar production snag with Cromwell. According to a 1996 episode of "HBO First Look," Cromwell was the preferred actor from the start, as he had already appeared in a few episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (notably "The Hunted" and the two-part episode "Birthright"). When Cromwell suddenly netted an Oscar nomination for the 1995 film "Babe," producer Rick Berman became fearful that their now-even-more-famous actor would drop out. Berman explained:

"When we were creating the character, we always had Jamie in our head. And then 'Babe' came along and all of a sudden he was nominated for an Academy Award and we thought, 'Oh my God, we're not gonna get him! He's too big for us now.' But because we had worked with him on a number of occasions, we were delighted that he did in fact take the role."

Cromwell would return to play Cochrane in an episode of "Star Trek: Enterprise" and as a hologram in "Star Trek: Lower Decks." He was part of the family in perpetuity.

The arc of Cochran

According to the oral history book "The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years: From The Next Generation to J. J. Abrams," edited by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross, Cromwell was selected specifically because he didn't have the same matinee idol good looks as Glenn Corbett. Berman noted that "Star Trek: First Contact" took place in the past, long before Earth had built its utopia, and felt that Zefram Cochrane should be equally unformed. In his own words:

"We had to go back and find a Cochrane who wasn't much of an admirable character to begin with, and who had lost any of what he had when the Borg started blowing up his ship. We had to get him back on track a little bit and help lead him in the direction we knew that history had meant for him to go."

The plot of "First Contact" also involved a malevolent species of cyborgs called the Borg, who had traveled to 2063 to assimilate humans into their machine collective. When the Borg attacks the un-launched Phoenix, the Enterprise crewmembers from the future have to help Cochrane rebuild the vessel in time for it to launch, and to be seen by passing Vulcans, due in our solar system in only a few more days.

Needless to say, the Enterprise defeats the Borg, the Phoenix launches, and our utopian future is secured. "Star Trek: First Contact," despite skewing toward action shlock , is still often considered the best film to have been based on "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

Screen Rant

Star trek confirms an original series genius is so smart, even the gods respect him.

In Star Trek #19, fans learn a beloved crew member of the Original Series is so respected, that even the gods come to him for advice.

  • In Star Trek #19, by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly and Megan Levens, fans learn even the gods respect Scotty's intelligence and experiecne.
  • The Organian/Vulcan T'Lir comes to Scotty, seeking advice on how to handle a crewmate.
  • Scotty is taken back to be giving advice to a god, but T'Lir takes what Scotty says to heart.

Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek #19!

Throughout Star Trek history, Scotty distinguished himself as one of Starfleet’s best engineers, and his reputation is so sterling that even the gods come to him for advice. A Star Trek icon, Scotty has joined Captain Sisko and the Theseus on a mission to save reality itself. As the crew prepares for the mission ahead, one god-like being comes to Scotty seeking advice in Star Trek #19 .

Star Trek #19 is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Megan Levens. After T’Lir has a falling out with Ensign Sato, they go to Scotty, seeking advice on how to handle mortal friendships. Scotty was a little taken back that a god-like Organian would come to him for advice. T’Lir persists in their request, and Scotty gives them solid advice, citing his own familial experiences as well as his time with Kirk and Spock.

Scotty advises T’Lir to cherish everyone close to them, god-like or not.

Scotty Earned His Reputation as "the Miracle Worker."

Scotty lived to the 24th century thanks to his ingenuity.

Montgomery Scott, known as “Scotty,” set the template for all other engineers in the Star Trek franchise. After years of bouncing around on freighters and other ships, Scotty came to the Enterprise. While Strange New Worlds established that Scotty knew Captain Pike, it would be under Captain James Kirk’s tenure that his reputation as the “miracle worker” grew. Scotty would retire in the early 24th century, but fate had other plans for him. Crash-landing on a Dyson Sphere, Scotty kept himself alive for decades in a jury-rigged transporter.

Scotty has been played by three different actors: James Doohan in the Original Series, Simon Pegg in the Kelvin-timeline films and Martin Quinn on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Rather than mope and brood about his situation, Scotty returns to duty in Starfleet. In some non-canonical sources, he helped design the Sovereign class starships, of which the Enterprise NCC-1701-E was one. When Kahless embarked on his genocidal quest against the gods, Scotty joined up with Sisko to help. He offered Sisko use of the Theseus , an older starship that Scotty refitted to be the best ship in Starfleet. The Theseus is an impressive feat of engineering, one of the most advanced ships in the fleet, and is a testbed for new technologies, some of which Scotty designed.

"It's Been 70 Years Since My Feet Touched the Ground": Scotty Reveals the Bittersweet Final Fate of Star Trek's Original Heroes

Scotty's genius is respected even by the gods, now scotty is going to meet the god-like beings of the star trek universe.

Scotty has been front and center in IDW’s flagship Star Trek comic. His service to the Theseus and the Federation as a whole has been a great reminder to fans why Scotty is a Star Trek icon in the first place. T’Lir remembers meeting Scotty as a child on Organia, and they recognize his genius. A century’s worth of experience on board starships counts for something, and T’Lir knows this. This god-like being sees Scotty as the true Star Trek genius he is, both as an engineer and as a human being.

Star Trek #19 is on sale now from IDW Publishing!

Michael Burnham's Biggest Offense Mirrors Another Popular Star Trek Hero But With a Twist

Star Trek: Discovery began with a mutiny by Michael Burnham, but she did far less than what another Star Trek hero did during The Original Series.

  • Michael Burnham's mutiny in Star Trek: Discovery mirrors Spock's rebellious acts in previous series, showing they both act against orders for the greater good.
  • Burnham's journey to captaincy in the series broke the mold by focusing on a first officer's arc rather than the traditional captain's leadership role.
  • While some fans criticized Burnham's mutiny, it exemplifies her commitment to Starfleet ideals, similar to other iconic Star Trek heroes like Spock.

When Star Trek: Discovery first debuted in 2017, it ended a 12-year drought for Gene Roddenberry's franchise on television. Fans hoping to see a modern take on the hopeful, aspirational world of the second-wave Star Trek series were disappointed at first. Discovery protagonist Michael Burnham committed a massive crime against Starfleet, but what she did to protect her ship and captain is what another popular Star Trek hero would've done if he was human.

There were many ways that Discovery was different from previous Star Trek installments, but Michael Burnham broke a franchise mold . Until her series, the Star Trek shows typically set up the ship's captain as the series' lead character. Burnham, however, started out as the first officer of the USS Shenzhou under the command of Captain Philippa Georgiou. Her path to the captain's chair was the overall arc of the series. Yet, when she committed mutiny in the pilot episode, some stringent fans felt this was an unforgivable sin. However, what she did was something Spock had done in the past, just with a very human twist.

How Star Trek: Discovery Stood Apart From Previous Series

Star trek: discovery's callum keith rennie shows a new side of starfleet.

When Gene Roddenberry was tapped by Paramount to create a new series in the Star Trek universe, he took an approach mirrored by Discovery . Simply put, Roddenberry wanted The Next Generation to be as different from The Original Series as possible. While it was visually distinct, the new series mirrored the previous one in a number of ways. However, Captain Picard didn't break Starfleet rules as often as Captain Kirk did, even though the USS Enterprise leader was always right to do so. In fact, when any of the series' lead captains disobeys Starfleet orders, it almost always ends up working out.

Discovery avoided Star Trek staples in design and other areas, providing viewers with an almost too distinct looking world. From ship nacelles to the uniforms worn by the central characters, it didn't look like the Starfleet of the past it was supposed to be. The biggest point of contention with fans when it came to design was the new look of the Klingons. While they spoke the language created by Marc Okrand for the 1980s films with extreme accuracy, the new look was a massive departure. Even their vessels, from the Birds of Prey to the massive Sarcophagus Ship, were unfamiliar. Still, like any good Klingon, these characters were hungry for war.

The war between the Federation and Klingons, while canonical, darkened the tone of the series. Also, Discovery's Season 1 twist with Captain Lorca being from the Mirror Universe, also showed audiences a very different kind of Starfleet. This actually allowed Burnham to be a representative of Starfleet's ideals, up to and including ending the war in a more peaceful way than Starfleet intended. Still, because Michael Burnham committed mutiny, some uncharitable fans blame everything on her. But, it's just what Spock might have done.

Michael Burnham's Mutiny Was What Spock Would've Done If He Was Human

Star trek: discovery's alex kurtzman & michelle paradise talk final season.

The first episode of Star Trek: Discovery is called "The Vulcan Hello," and that title is important. The episode introduced Georgiou, Saru, Burnham and her relationship to Sarek and Spock. In fact, Burnham seems more Vulcan than human in those early episodes, which is a Star Trek commentary on nature versus nurture. While Spock has his Vulcan physiology to help him control his emotions, for the fully human Burnham she's simply suppressing her emotions . Thus, when faced with the Klingons lying in wait, she approached the problem while denying her fear and panic.

Right before the fateful act of mutiny, Burnham turned to the only father available to her: Sarek. He's the one who told her about Vulcans' early contact with Klingons. Despite being almost a captain herself by this point, Georgiou gets angry when Michael contradicts her on the bridge. Still, Burnham was, ostensibly, right; the Klingons saw Starfleet as weak. Her suggestion to open diplomatic relations by firing first on the ship would've at least undermined T'Kuvma's argument about Starfleet and their commitment to peace. When Georgiou, also rightly, calls Burnham out for being emotional, her Number One incapacitates her with a Vulcan nerve pinch .

While Burnham was correct about the approach towards the Klingons and that this was a trap to start a war, she did make one mistake. The plan to capture T'Kuvma and weaken his standing with the Great Houses failed because of her. After T'Kuvma killed Georgiou, Burnham killed him in anger. She was so used to suppressing her emotions that the rage she felt at that moment overcame her logical judgment. Yet, her mutiny and even killing T'Kuvma could not have prevented the war. Rather than an example of how she's a terrible Starfleet officer, this showed just how very similar she actually was to her foster-brother Spock

Spock Committed Mutiny In One of Star Trek: TOS's Most Famous Episodes

Star trek: discovery actors doug jones & david ajala prepare for their last adventure.

While some fans lambast Michael Burnham for disobeying orders, it's a long-held Starfleet tradition, and it's not just the captains. On series like Star Trek: The Next Generation or Star Trek: Voyager , crew members disobey orders all the time. The only difference between them and Burnham, however, is it usually works out for the best. However, in one of the most famous episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series , Spock also commits mutiny and is far more successful than his sister . The first two-part episode, "The Menagerie" was a way for producers to reuse the failed first Star Trek pilot in the series. It introduced the injured Captain Pike and established that Spock was his loyal science officer and friend.

Spock created a false message to get the USS Enterprise to Pike's location. He then uses a Vulcan nerve pinch to incapacitate Chief Humbolt in order to ensure no one can stop the ship from reaching Talos IV. He takes command of the bridge and tells the crew that he's under secret orders to take the wheelchair-bound Captain Pike to the planet. Eventually Kirk and supposedly Commodore Mendez arrive at the ship, and Spock turns himself in just as Burnham does when Georgiou recovers. When Mendez is revealed to be a psychic projection from the Talosians, only Kirk is left to render a verdict. He lets Spock off-the-hook.

This wasn't the only time Spock disobeyed orders . He nerve-pinches a crewmate in Star Trek: The Motion Picture before his unauthorized mind-meld with V'Ger. In Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country , he repeatedly defies Starfleet orders in order to conduct his investigation and rescue Kirk. Yet, while he has the power of cool Vulcan logic on his side, Burnham was a mess of human emotions. She was desperate and acted rashly, assaulting Georgiou in a munity plan destined to fail. In fact, it's a lot like how Spock stole the Enterprise in Strange New Worlds' Season 2 premiere .

Michael Burnham's Mutiny Was Discovery's Way of Showing She's Just Like Spock

Star trek: discovery's sonequa martin-green embarks on one final voyage.

In Season 1, Michael Burnham carried herself like a Vulcan, which makes sense given how she was raised. Yet, she wasn't just like any Vulcan, but rather she was like Spock in a lot of ways. He was often depicted as a Vulcan who was resentful of his human half, slowly embracing it through his friendship with Kirk and McCoy. The first time he smiled, after all, was when he discovered he hadn't killed Kirk in "Amok Time." Burnham, on the other hand, almost denies her human side.

Both Burnham and Spock are incredibly smart and capable officers, and they know they are smarter than the others around them . This is why both characters will sometimes take action that may not be regulation or protocol. Spock and Burnham are deeply committed to Starfleet's larger ideals and know that sometimes doing something "wrong" is the right way to uphold them. Burnham disobeys orders again in the Season 1 finale, giving L'Rell control of the hydrobomb Starfleet wanted to deploy to destroy Qo'noS.

While some fans may think Michael Burnham's mutiny is unforgivable, it's precisely what Spock would've done, especially if he were fully human . Throughout Season 1 she is committed to Starfleet's ideals to preserve life, from Ripper the "Tardigrade" to her desire to help Saru protect the Pahvans from the war. While her mutiny and assault against Captain Georgiou was the wrong thing to do, like every Star Trek hero before her, she did it for the right reasons.

Overview [ | ]

The Vulcan Experimental Scout Vessel (informally, the Jellyfish ) began as a highly maneuverable vessel, built for the Daystrom Institute by Geordi La Forge at the Vulcan Science Academy. It was designed to withstand environmental conditions that would destroy most other ships; intended to serve as a test bed for various experiments and scientific exploration.

In 2387 , the Jellyfish was used by Ambassador Spock to deliver red matter to the Hobus System , creating a black hole that consumed the Hobus supernova and ended its threat to the galaxy . Spock was attacked by Captain Nero of the Narada moments later; in his attempt to escape both vessels were pulled into the black hole and are presumed destroyed. The Jellyfish, as it became known, more than carried its weight in these events, with incredible maneuverability to keep it safe and torpedo launchers as a primary defense mechanism.

Notes [ | ]

  • The film Star Trek reveals that the Jellyfish emerged in the year 2258 of the Kelvin Timeline . There it was captured by the Narada - which had arrived twenty-five years earlier - and Nero used the red matter on board to destroy Vulcan in revenge for the loss of Romulus . He attempted to do the same to Earth , but the Spock of that reality stole the Jellyfish and rammed it into the Narada , detonating the rest of the red matter and destroying both vessels.

Vulcan-Tellarite-Andorian starships

Participating as part of an alliance fleet in 2154

In 2154 , a number of these starships were present at the Battle of Andoria , carrying out the wishes of then- Administrator V'Las , which included not only attempting to invade Andoria – but almost going to war with Earth by trying to destroy Enterprise NX-01 . ( ENT : " Kir'Shara ")

Later that year, several of these combat cruisers were incorporated into an Andorian - Earth - Tellarite -Vulcan fleet , consisting of 128 ships, combined to create a sensor grid formed to detect a Romulan marauder that threatened to destabilize the entire region. ( ENT : " United ")

Mirror universe [ ]

In the mirror universe , Vulcan rebels utilized this class of vessel to engage the Terran fleet in 2155 , and were among the rebel ships that attacked the ISS Avenger . ( ENT : " In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II ")

Technical data [ ]

Physical arrangement [ ].

Display profile

The outboard plan of the Vulcan combat cruiser's design consisted of a flattened, conical shaped hull that flared out and around the circular warp nacelles and coming back together at the aft section of the ship, where the impulse engines were placed. The design was significantly larger that Earth 's NX-class starship. ( ENT : " Shockwave, Part II ", etc.)

Tactical systems [ ]

Ships of this class were armed with both photonic and particle weapons , as well as deflector shield technology . Particle beam emplacements include a forward emitter, two ventral emitters, and two aft emitters. ( ENT : " Awakening ", " Kir'Shara ")

Photonic weapons

In combat, these vessels were superior in firepower to Starfleet 's NX-class and nearly comparable in firepower to the Andorian battle cruiser . ( ENT : " Kir'Shara ") This class was inferior to a force of three Tholian ships , and in the vessels utilized in the mirror universe were significantly inferior to a single Federation Constitution -class starship. ( ENT : " Future Tense ", " In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II ")

Propulsion systems [ ]

Annular-warp nacelle lowered

This class was capable of traveling a hundred light years in a few weeks. ( ENT : " Future Tense ") When the warp drive was not in use, the ship's annular-warp nacelle was dropped into the vertical position; when the engines were powered down, or preparing to launch its auxiliary craft , the nacelle was folded horizontally into the primary hull. ( ENT : " Future Tense ", " Bounty ", " Impulse ")

Interior design [ ]

D'kyr type starships had at least thirteen decks . ( ENT : " Impulse ")

The bridge for the D'kyr -type included a panel where the commanding officer stood when speaking over the comm. ( ENT : " Cease Fire ")

Sickbay [ ]

Seleya sickbay

The sickbay aboard this class was located on deck 5, and consisted of a relatively small room with a single central biobed inside a transparent tube. The bed had wrist and ankle restraints for unwilling patients, and diagnostic controls on the transparent material. On the opposite wall of the entrance was a large white Vulcan emblem. ( ENT : " Impulse ")

Auxiliary control room [ ]

Seleya auxiliary control room

Auxiliary control room

Seleya crawlway

A crawlway aboard the Seleya

On the engineering deck was an auxiliary control room that could control the ships main functions if the main engine room and bridge were inoperable or unreachable. It had a round console in the center, which was directly below an access hatch to the access tunnel . The controls there could control the power distribution net and if need be, overload it to destroy the ship.

Around the walls of the room were monitors that showed engineering readouts and sensor telemetry, and on a flat wall opposite the door was a communications panel. At the bottom of that wall were two vents through which hexafluorine gas could be vented if the control room was taken over by hostile forces.

The bulkhead controls (usually routed to the control room via deck 9) could be rerouted through the auxiliary grid instead if need be. A series of command actuator circuits were in the central panel which controlled the door locking mechanisms. They could overload if not sequenced properly when being realigned, shocking anyone attempting to access the panel once power had been routed into it. ( ENT : " Impulse ")

Shuttlebay [ ]

Seleya diagram shuttlebay

Ship diagram

Starships of this type were equipped with a large shuttlebay (part of which was located on deck 7) that spanned from bottom to top of the mid-section of the ship, just in front of the warp-ring area, and the auxiliary ship that docked inside the warp ring. Vessels of this type were usually equipped with at least two shuttlecraft . ( ENT : " Impulse ")

Background information [ ]

As no on-screen or production name was ever assigned to this type of vessel, the name used here for this design was chosen based on Memory Alpha's identification of the first ship of this class to appear on screen, the D'kyr .

According to the final draft script of " Shockwave, Part II ", this type of craft is referred to as "a large Vulcan Command Ship." Although two vessels of this type appear in " Cease Fire ", they were described in that episode's final draft script merely as "powerful-looking Vulcan ships." [1] In the final draft script of " United ", this configuration was referred to as "a Vulcan ring ship", whereas it was called "a Vulcan ringship" in the final draft script of " In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II ".

The menus of the Enterprise 4th season DVD set identify this vessel as a "Command Class."

The D'Kyr -type was designed by John Eaves and the studio model was built by Pierre Drolet . [2] It partially descended from Matt Jefferies " ring ship " design seen on the rec deck display in Star Trek: The Motion Picture . ( ENT Season 3 Blu-ray , "Impulse" text commentary )

The majority of the Seyela interior was custom-built. Herman Zimmerman explained, " We designed [the Vulcan ship] from scratch for 'Impulse', a new vacu-form and that entire set – which was really a big H-shaped corridor with an airlock. " ( Star Trek: Communicator issue 151 , p. 57)

2004 Hallmark ornament

The D'kyr -type starship was one of the few Star Trek: Enterprise ornaments produced by Hallmark . Released in the 2004 holiday season under the name "Vulcan Command Ship", it retailed for approximately US$28.00 and the engine ring glowed a bright blue when plugged into a normal string of Christmas lights.

'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 5's Captain Rayner Ran His Ship Like a Pirate

Callum Keith Rennie also discusses coming into 'Discovery's final season, getting into prosthetics, and how much he has in common with Rayner.

The Big Picture

  • Callum Keith Rennie's Captain Rayner brings conflict and depth to Star Trek: Discovery 's final season.
  • Rennie discusses his experience on Star Trek: Discovery , praising the supportive cast and crew, despite the initial challenges of joining an established series for its last season.
  • In Season 5, Episode 4 "Face the Strange," Burnham and Rayner must work together within a time bubble to save the universe.

As Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) embarks on one last adventure with her crew, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 is bringing a few new characters along for the ride. Chief among those newcomers is the blunt, war-worn Captain Rayner. Played by Battlestar Galactica alum Callum Keith Rennie , Rayner is Burnham's new second in command on the Discovery , taking over after Saru ( Doug Jones ) took a different position at Starfleet.

Having lived through The Burn, Rayner doesn't have time for niceties and butts heads with Burnham almost immediately — so naturally, she takes it upon herself to give him a second chance when Starfleet is ready to cut him loose. Last week's episode saw him, rightfully, put in his place a bit as Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ) attempted to help him connect with the crew, much to his chagrin. In Season 5 Episode 4, "Face the Strange," Rayner and Burnham are thrown into a time bubble, forcing them to work together if they ever want to get back to the correct timeline and prevent the universe from being destroyed.

Ahead of the episode, I sat down with Rennie to dig into Rayner's backstory, what we can expect from him in the rest of the season, and what it will take for Rayner to truly connect with the crew of Discovery . During our conversation, we also discussed Rennie's history with sci-fi, what it was like joining Discovery for the show's final season, and what he's taking away from the whole experience.

Star Trek: Discovery

Not available

Taking place almost a decade before Captain Kirk's Enterprise, the USS Discovery charts a course to uncover new worlds and life forms.

Rennie is no stranger to science fiction, having had roles in such series as The Umbrella Academy , Jessica Jones, and Battlestar Galactica. As Battlestar Galactica was the series that turned me into a sci-fi fan, and perhaps Rennie's most recognizable role, I had to ask him about being a part of such massive and beloved franchises within the genre. "It's amazing," he said. For Rennie, even though Battlestar was also a reboot of a classic series , the show's success was a lot less predictable than the mainstay that is Star Trek . He explained, "Like, say Battlestar , when I started on that I had no idea where that one was gonna go. Discovery was already very established , but I actually didn't let any of that into my [head], because I went, “That's not gonna help.” So, I didn’t. Now, I'm feeling the world of it. Now, I'm sensing what the world of Discovery is and how many people love it, and how it fits. "

Discovery also isn't his first experience with Star Trek , "I watched the original. That was my thing, and that was it," Rennie told me. While he may have missed some of the series' in between, saying, "There's big chunks of time where I just didn't watch a lot of TV, so I missed all of the other stuff," he'll always make time for The Original Series when he comes across it, "even if the old Star Trek comes on, I'll still watch it because that was my Star Trek . Jim Kirk, and all of that. "

While we've gotten a pretty good sense of who Rayner is in these first four episodes, most of his backstory remains a mystery. Rennie revealed that "some backstory comes up in a few episodes." Part of his gruff exterior will be explained as we'll "get a sense of why he's maybe got a chip on his shoulder and has some unprocessed resentments about a bunch of things that maybe have played out in his work in a negative way."

Rennie Calls 'Star Trek: Discovery's Latest Episode "Amazing"

"Face the Strange," is such a classic Star Trek episode, employing the ever-entertaining sci-fi trope of sticking our main characters in a time loop, both to put an obstacle in their path as well as to bring them face to face with some of their own demons. For Rennie, the episode really put the science in science fiction. "It was like, 'Whoa! What's happening? I don't get it.' There's just so much science stuff and talk, so much jumping about to places and history and stuff." But he had high praise for his fellow castmates as well as the crew behind the camera." Lee [Rose] being the director, you're in great hands. Being in scenes with Sonequa, you know that you're gonna be in it , and it was great. I watched it again last night, and there’s just an amazing amount of stuff in there. It was just an amazing episode. "

In this episode, Burnham and Rayner are tossed back in time to the first season of Discovery , bringing them both face to face with the version of Burnham who's fresh off her own demotion in Starfleet . Throughout the episode, it becomes quite clear that Burnham and Rayner have a lot more in common than either of them might have realized. When asked if this experience might put them more on equal footing, Rennie confirmed that "he's learned an understanding of the crew." He went on to point out that we haven't seen the relationship that Rayner had with his own crew.

He explained: "We're not on the Antares talking about his crew, which I think is an important part that we missed, where you go, 'How did I see my people on my particular ship? And how well did I know them?' No one's asking me how well I knew everybody because I did, but if I've only been there a brief time, you're only gonna have facts." He admits that it is important for Rayner to connect past the surface level. "Through that particular episode, you learn and go, 'Yes, it is good to know what people are up to and where they're from,' because in that particular instance, it saved us. So, I learned a thing, and I give a, 'Yes. Got it. Thank you.'"

Rayner Will Have to Shorten the Distance Between Himself and the Discovery Crew

While it doesn't sound like we'll be getting any flashbacks to Rayner's time on the Antares Rennie believes that he'd spent a similar amount of time with that crew as Michael has with hers. "We didn't get to inhabit that, I get to make it up in my own mind," he said. "But for me, it was more like a pirate ship that I had. " While Rayner comes off as the more stubborn, stick-to-the-mission Captain between him and Burnham, Rennie doesn't think he was quite so strict on his own ship. He said:

"That's the way I perceived it. It wasn't some rigid, completely stoic, boss fest, but a little bit of a wild card ship. We're gonna go into things that nobody else wants to go into, or knows how to deal with, but we would. "

While the walls around Rayner are still pretty high, Rennie explained that we will see him "shorten the distance" he's put between himself and the crew of the Discovery. "There's a great bit, there's an episode where Burnham leaves me again to take control of the ship. There's an interaction with everybody in a certain way because they don't like me yet. [Laughs] And I need some help a little bit, but I've created a distance, and I have to shorten that distance between everybody." He went on to say there are plenty of "fun dynamics" to look forward to and Rayner's insistence on keeping everyone at arm's length will likely come back to bite him.

Star Trek has quite a long list of original alien species created for the franchise, and Rayner just happens to be a Kellerun, a race that hasn't been seen since Deep Space Nine . In classic Trek fashion, Kelleruns appear mostly human with the most visible difference being the shape of the ears. As he follows in the footsteps of the likes of Leonard Nimoy and any actor who has ever played a Vulcan or a Romulan, I asked Rennie about getting into prosthetics for the role. "Those guys are great. Rocky [Faulkner] was great, Nicola [Bendrey] was great." While it was certainly an extra step the process was brief enough that it didn't bother him to come to set a bit earlier than usual. "That was probably an hour, and I really didn't think about that enough to go, 'Oh, that's right. I have to get up earlier.' But I think we got it down to an hour and a bit for just the ears because there’s a lot of stuff on them."

Despite the agonizing wait of sitting in front of a mirror for an hour, Rennie noted that Faulkner and Bendrey made the make-up experience as fun as it could possibly have been. He said: "I don't love just sitting there looking at myself for an hour, but there's music and great company and coffee, and it became a really sweet part of the day, and then another sweet part of the day where I download. " It wasn't his first time getting into prosthetics, but his previous experience had been brief. After playing Rayner across an entire season, Rennie admitted by the end, removing the glue actually started to feel like you'd expect pulling costume glue off your ears to feel. "There was a point near the end where the glue-on, glue-off became quite painful for a while."

The Support of the Cast and the Fans Are Highlights of Rennie's 'Star Trek' Experience

While this is Rennie's first season on the show, it's the final bow for Star Trek: Discovery . When asked what he'd be taking away from this experience, he had nothing but high praise for the cast and crew. As a newcomer on a well-established show, jumping into the fifth season had a bit of a learning curve. "I found that coming into the show was difficult for me because it was unlike a show that I'd been on before. It was already very well established." He went on to say:

"I pat myself on the back because I made it through, and there was this wonderful group energy that helped me do that. The good naturedness of the show was something that I maybe haven't worked on. There was a wholehearted goodness about it, which was quite nice, which overlapped into how people treated each other and mutual respect. Also, I kind of blocked out all Star Treks in my mind, so I'm there not thinking of Star Trek history. I'm just doing scene-to-scene and working on this stuff, and then it finishes, and then I forget that there's an incredible vast following of the show that somehow you are now part of it like that. All of that, this is all relatively new to me."

As a new addition to an already established group, I pointed out that it seemed as though Rennie's experience mirrored that of his characters, and he agreed. "I'm excited for people to see the season. And then, coming into it playing, “I don't want to be liked. It doesn't matter if I'm liked. I'm there to do my job, like Rayner, and I'm doing it. And then there's the after-effect of an incredible fan base that seems to be very supportive ."
