Cape Town Cycle Tour 2024: Weather conditions at EVERY point on 109km route

The 2024 Cape Town Cycle Tour will take place on Sunday, 10 March. Here’s what the weather has in store for those participating …

Garrin Lambley

The world’s biggest timed bike race, the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour , will take place on  Sunday, 10 March 2024 .

With just hours to go (at the time of publishing), entrants will be keeping an eagle eye on the weather forecast for race day – especially the wind!

In addition to the ‘standard’ 109km race, there will once again be a 42km route this year.

This year’s edition will be the 46th of all time.

While the weather conditions earlier in the week looked favourable for fast times, the latest forecast for those lining up at the start is that the wind will be a factor.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has published its forecast for every point on the 109km route as the race makes its way around the peninsula.

SAWS has predicted clear skies throughout the race with a minimum morning temperature in the CBD of 18 degrees Celsius.

The wind will be in a south-southeast direction and will peak at 40km/h at various points on the route.

Sunrise over the Mother City is at 06:42 meaning the early starters will get racing in the dark.

Meanwhile, do you know someone taking part that you would like to follow?

If so, this year’s Cape Town Cycle Tour will offer real-time race tracking by providing live results via the  SportSplits tracker .

To track a rider, click HERE to download the tracking app.

NOTE: Times posted during the event are Unofficial. Official results are posted upon completion of the event.

Meanwhile, to accommodate the tens of thousands of cyclists who will take part, several roads will be closed on race day.

The South African website  wishes  ALL  Cape Town Cycle Tour participants a safe an enjoyable ride. Here’s wishing the wind is always at your back!

Cape Town’s iconic cycle tour geared to host 30,000 riders in perfect weather

With clear skies, warm temperatures and a light breeze expected on Sunday, conditions are set to be perfect for both an intense 109km epic and a tranquil 42km cruise on two wheels through the Mother City in the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour.

About 30,000 participants will pedal through the Cape Peninsula and Cape Town central business district on Sunday in the 46th edition of the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour.

The 109km route around the Cape Peninsula has attracted about 27,500 participants, while the shorter 42km tour, introduced in 2023, going through the Cape Town CBD to the Blue Route and back, expects around 2,500 riders.

The shorter distance was introduced to encourage novice and junior riders to hop on their bicycles and complete a Cape Town Cycle Tour.

Roads across both routes will be closed to motorists on Sunday, with 230 traffic officials, 40 metro police and 182 members of the SA Police Service set to help the event run smoothly.

The 109km route starts at the city hall before winding through the picturesque peninsula and finishing at Green Point.

[caption id="attachment_2082790" align="alignnone" width="720"]

The 2022 Cape Town Cycle Tour champion, Marc Pritzen, is a strong favourite to win this year, along with his Cape Epic teammate Tristan Nortje.

Last year’s champ, Chris Jooste, cycling with RKC Collective, has a point to prove that his breakaway 2023 win was not a fluke and will be looking to replicate his achievement.

Four-time winner Nolan Hoffman is another who is expected to be among the front runners when they reach the finish line in Green Point.

The women’s race is expected to be a straight shootout between Cape Epic champ Vera Looser and South African Road Race champion Carla Oberholzer.

But the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the world’s largest individually timed cycle race, is not only for the professionals.

Tracking app

This year’s tour introduced the SportSplits Tracker app, which allows supporters of riders to track participants in real time.

“We are continuously working to improve the experience for both our riders and spectators,” said David Bellairs, director at the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust.

“The tracking app offers an exceptional level of engagement and excitement, allowing friends and family to stay connected and support participants every step of the way.

“The Cape Town Cycle Tour is not just a race; it’s a celebration of community, resilience, and the beauty of our city,” Bellairs said. DM

The 2023 Cape Town Cycle Tour marked the 45th edition of the famous race around the Mother City. In that long history there have been few more perfect days for a big day out on a bicycle. The Cape’s fickle weather played along and helped the city celebrate the near 30 000 participants who came out to ride and race.

At the sharp end the elite men and women probably faced the worst of the weather, as a South Easter made for cagy racing, particularly in the Southern Peninsula. In the women’s race the headwind meant that the field only split on Chapmans Peak Drive, when Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio split the field asunder. Despite this the groups came back together again, first in Hout Bay and then again in Camps Bay. This meant that the women’s race came down to a sprint finish and Kim le Court proved fastest for the third time in a row, adding a fourth Cape Town Cycle Tour title to her palmarès.

In the men’s race an early break was allowed to gain 4 minutes before the chase began in earnest. With the peloton having left their pursuit too late Chris Jooste was able to outsprint his breakaway companions , Andries Nigrini, Jaedon Terlouw and Daniel Loubser to win the 2023 title. “With such strong riders in the break, things fell into place,” an ecstatic Jooste stated afterwards. “I knew that if we kept up the speed and our confidence, victory would be ours.”

Moolman-Pasio, who finished third in the sprint, then started a second lap with a group of women from Khayelitsha’s Khaltsha Cycles. The 17 young women were kitted out in Rocacorba Cycling apparel and Avalanche Bicycles for their Cape Town Cycle Tour. Most took on the 109 kilometre full route; but a few, who felt unprepared such a long ride did the inaugural edition of the 42 kilometre race. By all accounts they had a fantastic ride.

weather for cape town cycle tour

As did the e-Bikers. The growth in electrically assisted bicycles saw a call for e-Bikes to be included in the Cape Town Cycle Tour, in 2020. They have become a more common sight on the route, buzzing up the climbs of Smitswinkel, Chapmans Peak and Suirkerbossie. The initiative makes the race more manageable for riders whose health or fitness would otherwise dissuade them from taking part. The same is true for the new 42 kilometre route. Racing down the Blue Route before turning around and heading back to the Castle of Good Hope and City Hall it provided a teaser for would-be full 109 kilometre race riders. The Under 15 boys and girls, as well as the Under 17 girls raced across the short course too, while the Under 17 boys started in Fish Hoek, for a 79 kilometre race.

weather for cape town cycle tour

With the final starters in the long route only setting out at 09:07 there were riders on the route until cut-off at 16:07. Helping them along were thousands of Capetonians. Kalk Bay, Simons Town, Noordhoek and Hout Bay were particular hotspots. Crowds gathered around speakers and pitched gazebos. Some sprayed water on sweltering riders and others offered ice cold beers. A group in Noordhoek even set up an inflatable slip-and-slide.

weather for cape town cycle tour

All of this helped encourage the strugglers around the course. For everyone knows that although the Cape Town Cycle Tour is permanently scheduled for the second Sunday in March, many enter and then forget to train for it. How hard can the unofficial fun ride World Championships be after all? Well… on a day with perfect weather, a lot easier than in years when the Cape Doctor howls or a winter storm arrives unseasonably early.

Though there was every reason for the 45th edition to be one for the record books, it will inevitably fade in the memories of those who took part. It is only the editions when mother nature conspires against cyclists that burn into cycling’s collective consciousness. Nobody who rode on Sunday, 12 March 2023, is sorry that this race was less eventful. Sometimes perfect is just perfect…

WATCH THE RACE ONLINE + ROAD CLOSURES

The race will be broadcast live between 6am - 12:30pm on Sunday, 10 October 2021, on the  The Cape Town Cycle Tour Facebook page . If you are going to be out and about, here’s how to avoid the road closures .

COVID-19 SAFETY FOR PARTICIPANTS

Due to Covid-19 protocols and safety measures, all cyclists need to be fully vaccinated or able to undergo rapid antigen testing. Participants who are fully vaccinated, need to bring their proof of vaccination card and ID. Those who are unvaccinated, will need to undergo an antigen test, which costs R250.

WHERE TO WATCH AND WHAT TO DO

Edinburgh Drive Edinburgh Drive also known as Wynberg Hill is an early test of the riders’ mettle because of its steep gradient. Your support will be most welcome, especially to those who at that point feel that they may not have trained enough for the race. Getting There: It’s a pretty long slog but you can catch a train to Plumstead and walk to the top. Alternatively, you can drive there and find roadside parking, or park in the lot opposite Victoria Hospital. Glencairn Beach This is a flatter part of the route where racers normally maintain a quick pace. Watch them zoom by and spur on those who may still be feeling flustered after Edinburgh Drive. If it’s a scorcher outside, you can head down over the train tracks to take a dip in the tidal pool . Getting There: Road closures rule out using your car to get here. Instead, grab a train to Glencairn Station and make a day of it. Simon’s Town It’s a pretty hectic slog along this section and, depending on the time you’re there, most riders will be going pretty slow, some may even be struggling. Help them along with words of encouragement and maybe even a cold Coke (although there is a water point in the vicinity). While you’re there, why not set some time aside to explore Simonstown. Getting There: As with Glencairn, driving here is out of the question, but a select amount of trains go all the way to Simonstown. Noordhoek With the biggest test lying just ahead (Chapman’s Peak) every rider will be a little nervous heading through this section, especially beginners who have no idea what they’re getting into. A little “you can do it” will go a long way to give them the motivation to take on the challenge. If you get tired of cheering the cyclists on why not head to  Noordhoek Farm Village which is home to the famous Cafe Roux .

Getting There: With no train station and no escape from road closures, this vantage point is best saved for those within walking distance of Noordhoek's main road. Hout Bay: Tired, but relieved cyclists will be coming through the Hout Bay area after mastering the gruelling Chapman’s Peak. The experienced ones will know what lies ahead, the inexperienced may only have heard the legends. You can head to the Bay Harbour Market for a break between clapping. Getting There: If you’re a smart driver and use the open sections of the M4 and M3, you can find and access a good viewing point with your car, especially if you live nearby. Suikerbossie This is what lies ahead of Hout Bay. It’s neither steep nor long, but Suikerbossie has become a legend along this route because most riders are spent after what came before. Your support is probably most needed here. It’s close to the final stretch, so a little reminder of this could provide some motivation.

Getting There: Strictly for those who live close by.

Sea Point The final stretch: jubilant riders will only be thinking about the finish line. They may or may not need your support anymore, but it’s satisfying to see them flying along after the long and hard route is done and dusted. You can do this while having a drink and a bite to eat at Strolla Restaurant and Bar.

weather for cape town cycle tour

A CHANCE TO RACE AFTER ENTRY HAS:  HOW TO SUBSTITUTE If you miss out on an entry, your other option is to substitute another rider. It’s important to do this properly because if you don’t, you and the rider you’re substituting for can be banned from entering again.

weather for cape town cycle tour

Packing Your Bike This isn’t as simple as it looks. Here are some pointers on getting your bike into a box or bag:

Turn the handlebars parallel to the frame This is to make the bike streamlined enough to fit into a regulation bike bag or box. You can also remove the handlebars to make it fit, but that creates extra admin when you arrive and can mess up your bike fit.

Lower the saddle This will ensure that the bike fits the height dimensions of a standard box or bag. You may want to go for a quick bike fitting when you get to Cape Town to get the saddle height perfect again. Remove the pedals Like turning the handles, removing the pedals is for width reasons. Deflate your tyres Fluctuating air pressure levels in plane cabins can make tyres gain pressure, this causes tyre burst and pinched flats mid-flight. Letting out some air helps to avoid that. Place the bike in a bag, box If you follow the procedure above, your bike should fit perfectly into your bike bag or box.

What can be checked in as luggage If you’re bringing all your own stuff, you’ll need to know what you can and can’t check into luggage. Here are the regulations commonly used by airlines.

  • Inflation pumps filled with division 2.2 carbon dioxide non-flammable gas will be accepted for transportation as checked baggage only. Make sure you declare this when checking in for your flight.
  • Wheel bags cannot be carried as hand luggage and need to be checked in as checked baggage. The standard checked baggage allowance will apply.
  • If you do have more baggage than you are allowed, you can pay for the extra baggage beforehand or at the airport.
  • Spare wheels need to be packed properly before they are checked in. At check-in, the spare wheels will be tagged with a limited release tag.
  • Speedometers and any other electronic equipment, as well as helmets and shoes, can be taken on as hand luggage.

Western Cape ready for its annual Cape Town Cycle Tour

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde says the City is ready for the influx of local and international cyclists participating in the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour today.

The Premier has described the cycle race as an amazing economic driver, injecting millions of rands into the City of Cape Town’s economy.

The Cycle Tour is well-known for its scenic and challenging 109-kilometre route around the Cape Peninsula.

Winde says road closures may inconvenience the public.

“It is an amazing economic drive and an amazing event. Something that I also want to say is well done to everyone who has entered, I wish you the best of luck.”

“Also, for the citizens of Cape Town, especially those around the route as their homes get blocked and businesses get blocked on this one day of the year where they cannot get in and out but they know it is good for the City. So thank you very much for your tolerance.”

Suikerbossie Hill to be flattened to make Cape Town Cycle Tour easier

Suikerbossie Hill to be flattened to make Cape Town Cycle Tour easier

The Mayor of Cape Town is pleased to announce on this day, 1 April 2024, that Suikerbossie Hill is soon to be flattened. This will bring immediate and much-needed relief to every cyclist who participates in the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

It will also bring relief to motorists who spend half a tank of petrol just getting up Suikerbossie each time.

Speaking about this historic improvement to the landscape of Cape Town, the Mayor said, ‘While completing my first full Cape Town Cycle Tour (on an e-bike), I came face to face with the sheer horror and torture that is Suikerbossie Hill.

‘About a quarter of the way up Suikerbossie, I lost the ability to speak. Half way up Suikerbossie, I lost the will to live. Three-quarters of the way up, in a state of severe suffering, I had an epiphany – why should this hill be here, anyway?

‘I have no idea who put Suikerbossie Hill there, or what they were thinking, but we will now correct this massive error. Frankly, I’m surprised no one has thought of this before.’

News of this decision was met with elation in the wider Cape Town cycling community as well as in the Republic of Hout Bay, where residents have suffered under the shadow of Suikerbossie for too long. Residents will soon be advised of demolition and tunnelling plans, but we expect the work to be finished just in time to make next year’s Cycle Tour much more pleasant.

Cycle Tour Director, Mr David Bellairs, was ecstatic in response, ‘The race was nearly three weeks ago, and there are still a few cyclists trying to get up Suikerbossie. They’re still out there right now, and we still check on them once a day. This announcement will make a big positive difference. We expect thousands more riders to sign up now. What a great decision!’

The Mayor ended by assuring residents that all the gravel and sand removed from Suikerbossie would be put to good use.

‘We will be donating it to Jo’burg for them to use in filling potholes’, he said.
