Humpback whale jumping out of ocean with boat tour nearby

Planning a whale watching trip in the States? The whales are way ahead of you, and by the time you pack your bags, humpback whales will be swimming thousands of miles between warm-weather mating grounds and the buffet of cold-water foods that draw them north each year. (Plankton, anyone?) Since whales patrol the United States coast in every month, you can meet up with them on your own schedule, from the long days of the Alaskan summer to Virginia Beach ’s winter sunshine. Here's our list of the best places for a whale watching vacation in America.

Leave the shore behind and listen to what’s happening beneath the waves—encountering whales in the wild can kick-start your sense of wonder. Join a whale watching cruise to see them breed, play, or snack on plankton, and you’ll learn about the whales’ secret world. Take a whale watching trip to the Hawaiian islands where they’ll be swimming near colorful coral reefs, or hop a flight to Juneau , one of Alaska’s best places to see whales in glacier-chilled waters. Spot a nimble orca in Washington’s San Juan Islands , then head to Monterey, California for a chance to see blue whales, the largest animals on earth. Pods of whales swim up and down the east and west coasts, dazzling whale watching tours as they breach and slap their tails.

Still not sure where to go? We trawled America’s 95,000-mile coastline to find the best whale watching vacation destinations in the country. Next thing you know, you’ll be shouting “there she blows!”

Oak Harbor, Deception Pass State Park, Washington

Deception Pass State Park

Running salmon draw hungry orca whales to the waters off Oak Harbor , where narrow Deception Pass separates Fidalgo Island and Whidbey Island . Whale watching tours from nearby Anacortes search out local whales and the “transient” pods that pass through on their annual migration, and on clear days you’ll have views of both the San Juan Islands and the snow-capped peaks of the Olympic Mountain range.

Kailua-Kona, Big Island, Hawaii

Kona Snorkel Tours

Whales luxuriate in Hawaii’s warm waters after the epic journey from their summer feeding grounds in Alaska, so a whale watching vacation to the Big Island is your chance to see humpback whales as they breed and give birth. Orcas Island It is easy to confuse the name of the whale (orca, lower case “o”) with the name of Orcas Island, but it is a good distinction to know. The ‘orca’ whale is part of the Latin scientific classification Orcinus orca, which translates as “belonging to Orcus” – Orcus was a Roman god of the netherworld, and this genus name is likely a reference to the hunting prowess of the killer whale. In Latin, orca translates “large-bellied pot or jar”, but orc- also refers to a whale.

The name of Orcas Island, on the other hand, came when Spanish explorers entered the area in 1792 and named the San Juan Islands after various Spanish and Mexican dignitaries. Orcas was a shortened version of Horcasitas, after Juan Vicente de GĂŒemes Padilla Horcasitas y Aguayo, 2nd Count of Revillagigedo, the Viceroy of Mexico who sent an exploration expedition under Francisco de Eliza to the Pacific Northwest in 1791. Eliza used the name for the whole archipelago, but in 1847, mapmaker Henry Kellett assigned the name to Orcas Island during his reorganization of the British Admiralty charts.

That is good to know! Thanks for sharing, Becky :)

I’m more excited to go whale watching now.

Mildred, it’s incredible!

A whale's head breaches the water sending specs flying with a ship in the distance.

Whale watching is booming. Here’s how to do it responsibly.

These tours are generally beneficial for whales, but they can also stress them out. Here’s how to ensure that your trip does more good than harm.

Whale watching tours chasing after orcas can lead to once-in-a-lifetime vacation photos. But while memorable for tourists, such pursuits can force cetaceans to abandon crucial feeding grounds, get separated from their babies, and feel debilitating stress.

The International Whaling Commission (which oversees whaling and whale watching globally) lists some 50 countries that outline rules for marine tourism, from maintaining safe distances to how long boats can hang out with a pod. But while whale watching is becoming increasingly popular around the world, travelers have a tough time knowing if a local guide is aware of whale watching regulations, let alone follows them.

Because species and coastal communities vary, regulations and resources differ from region to region: What works in TromsĂž, Norway, may not in Baja California, Mexico . That makes it difficult to impose blanket restrictions across the world and uniformly enforce them.

These factors can make it especially hard for travelers looking forward to a long-awaited trip on the water. However, there are things you can do before setting sail to ensure an unforgettable experience, while helping to protect the animals for the future. Here’s what to know.

People pear over the edge of a ship while whales swim in the water.

A whale watching boom

Whale watching didn’t become a tourist activity until the 1950s, when California ’s former military outpost at Cabrillo National Monument became the world’s first public whale watching site . Other posts popped up along the coast, paralleling the migration path of gray whales . Soon, enterprising boat owners (many of them fishermen) began taking people out for a couple hours in between fishing seasons.

Nearly hunted to extinction, gray whales and their conservation success story contributed to a whale watching boom across the country by the 1990s. Whale watching continues to grow around the world today, with an average of 13 million people annually participating in an industry that generates over $2 billion globally. In Alaska alone, half a million visitors shelled out $86 million in 2019 to stan over humpbacks and minkes feeding and socializing in majestic fjords.

These days, over a hundred countries offer a catamaran or zodiac sail to glimpse a sudden mist of sea spray on the horizon, a graceful tail fluke slipping under the ocean’s surface, or—the holy grail—a humpback bursting out of the water.

( Whale watching is having a moment—in New York City .)

Indeed, since whale conservation rallied in the 1980s, whales have taken on near-celebrity status (a breaching humpback even starred on a 2022 U.S. postage stamp ). Star quality aside, they’re also protected under U.S. law, notes Elliott Hazen, a National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) marine ecologist, who took the postage stamp photo and has worked on reducing the risk of ship strikes on whales and entanglements from fishing gear.

“Whales offer innumerable benefits in terms of ecosystem roles, carbon sequestration, and carbon cycling in addition to tourism, funding, and cultural importance,” Hazen says. “So it’s really hard to actually quantify how important whales are, but there’s no question that they are a huge part of our coastal culture.”

These “ ecosystem engineers ,” as marine biologist and Nat Geo Explorer Asha de Vos calls them, support healthy marine environments. A whale’s dive-and-rise movements stir up all kinds of tasty nutrients from the depths of the ocean to the surface. Released in plumes, their poop fuels phytoplankton—a foundational food source for all marine life. In its lifetime, a whale can capture about 33 tons of atmosphere-warming CO2 . When it dies, its body sinks to the bottom of the sea, where the CO2 stays trapped.

“Even one percent increase of phytoplankton productivity [can] capture the CO2 equivalent of two billion trees,” Jean-Michel Cousteau, president of Ocean Futures Society and honorary president of World Cetacean Alliance , writes in an email. “More whales mean more whale fertilizer enhancing the productivity [of] and improving fisheries and sustaining atmospheric oxygen for us all.”

Whales swim towards the surface light illuminating them and the water as they swim closer to the surface.

Since the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act were passed in the 1970s, whale populations have rebounded. Yet they remain at risk from other factors, among them entanglement with fishing lines , ocean pollution from toxic metals and noise, climate change, and ship strikes—the last is especially deadly for blue and fin whales, says Hazen.

( It’s the world’s newest whale species—and it’s already endangered .)

Responsible whale watching can help shed light on these factors. Experts on whale watching vessels educate the public and can help foster a lifelong love of marine life. In many instances, tour boats are the first line of defense when it comes to spotting and reporting entanglements and injuries. They also collect important data, typically in the form of fluke photos for scientists to track, but also just by reporting species they see.

That happened on a recent tour in Monterey Bay, California, says Hazen. A whale watching group spotted a North Pacific right whale, one of the most endangered large whale populations in the world, with just 30-35 individuals left. “That’s another opportunity for gain because the whale watching vessels are there on the water way more often than any of us scientists can be,” says Hazen. “So it’s a really important resource for understanding how the environment is changing, and how the top predators that we care about often are responding to it.”

But it isn’t perfect. While watch watching tours yield a “net positive,” says Hazen, vessels can still contribute to problems like noise pollution, which can stress animals when they’re feeding or resting. In terms of conservation awareness, it’s an expensive leisure activity that can exclude many people.

( Why Canada is making it harder to go whale watching .)

How travelers can help whales

So how can you ensure that your next whale watching trip does more good than harm? For starters, travelers should familiarize themselves with the rules of their destination.

“Many countries have either a certification program or viewing guidelines that are accessible on the Internet,” says Cousteau. “NOAA’s Marine Life Viewing Guidelines are followed by most whale operators in the United States.” The International Whaling Commission maintains a list of guidelines in other countries and an overall handbook , both of which are updated periodically.

Voluntary education group Whale Sense has its own certification program and lists responsible tour guides in Alaska and the Atlantic on its site. You can also look for outfitters around marine sanctuaries or Whale Heritage Sites . The latter is a certification program run by the World Cetacean Alliance , a conservation organization that currently recognizes six destinations around the world. While these sites don’t place regulations or enforce them, they “highlight the world policies that are already put in place [to] reduce the impacts of climate change, ship strikes, [and] entanglement,” says Cousteau.

However, climate change can force migrating mammals to move out of sanctuaries; and these safety zones have different levels of protection, notes Hazen. Contact may be prohibited, for instance, but activities like crab fishing may still be allowed, which could lead to entanglements. “It’s not a fault of the sanctuaries themselves, it’s a byproduct of the sanctuaries act not having full ‘protected area’ benefits,” he says.

( Humpback whales face major setback from climate change .)

If you still aren’t sure, contact local coastal museums, such as the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, California, a marine sanctuary and Whale Heritage site, and the Pacific Whale Foundation ’s citizen science program for responsible ways to tour. You can also contribute to whale health via cell phone apps like iNaturalist and Whale Alert , which reports deceased or distressed whales to NOAA.

If all else fails, look for spouts and flukes from shore, like the beach in Cape Cod , Massachusetts , or hotels like Turtle Bay Resort , located within the Hawaiian Island Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary . In North America, the coastal Whale Trail guides visitors along a hundred lookouts (some with lodging managed by local communities), from British Columbia down to the birthplace of whale watching in Southern California.

Juneau may be the capital city of the state of Alaska but it is anything but a concrete jungle. On the doorstep of Juneau are incredible opportunities to experience wildlife, from black bears in the forests to orcas and humpback whales in the bay. Naturally whale watching should be the first thing you think of with an excursion from Juneau – with a dramatic backdrop of mountains and glaciers there are few places as atmospheric to spot these giant marine animals. There is a whole industry in Juneau designed around whale watching and plenty of operators to choose from. Here are three of the best Juneau whale watching excursions.

From Juneau: Whale Watching Cruise with Snacks

This is a top-rated trip and pretty good value considering it’s 3.5 hours in length. You’ll be hoping to spot humpbacks, killer whales, sea lions, porpoises and bald eagles from the comfortable, climate -controlled jet boats. Alongside the wildlife there are also panoramic views of the fjords, mountains and glaciers, as well as light snacks, water, coffee, and hot chocolate onboard. The tour is led by a knowledgeable captain and naturalist who will take you in search of whales in Favorite Channel, Stephens Passage, Lynn Canal, or Saginaw Channel. Binoculars are provided – a nice touch – and alongside the coach transfer it is in total two hours of whale watching on the water. From €121.81.

Juneau Shore Excursion: Paddle with Whales! Kayak Adventure

A lot of whale watching tours take place onboard a large boat with a fairly big group. It’s all really comfortable but there is one way to feel a bit more in touch with the animals around you. This kayak adventure might not be for everyone but it certainly feels in tune with nature as you travel up the Inside Passage to reach rich feeding grounds for humpback whales. On the way there are views of glaciers, forest, and snow-capped mountains, with an expert guide explaining all about the habitat and local eco system. Everything is included, from bottled water and snacks to paddling and rain gear and Forest Service Permits. It’s not cheap though. From €463.58.

Juneau Whale Watching and Salmon Bake

Yes, you read that right. On this trip not only do you get to observe whales but you’ll be enjoying a salmon bake too – can’t say fairer than that. The whale watching takes place in Auke Bay, with a naturalist on board also to point out Steller sea lions, Dall’s porpoises, bald eagles and sea birds in the area. Whale sightings are even guaranteed. Then to finish you’ll get to enjoy freshly grilled Alaska salmon in a picturesque location, part of an all-you-can-eat buffet (included), followed by roast marshmallows around a campfire. It’s a great way to meet fellow travellers too. From €224.14.

The winter is one of the best times to visit Oahu. That’s because you’ll be able to witness the amazing humpback whale migration! During this time, more than 10,000 whales make the long journey down to the islands from Alaska to breed and raise their young (the waters are much warmer around Hawaii than they are up north!).

If you’re heading to Oahu and want to witness this incredible spectacle for yourself, there are many whale watching tours where you can get up close to these beautiful creatures. There are private yacht charters, group speed boat tours, and everything else in between, which can make choosing the right tour difficult.

But we’ve done the dirty work and picked out the best whale watching tours on Oahu. As one of our favorite Hawaiian activities, you can’t go wrong with any of the excursions on this list!

Oahu Whale Watching FAQs

When is the oahu whale watching season.

Most whales start arriving in Hawaii around December (but there have been some years where they show up as early as September). The season usually wraps up around March, which is when the majority of pods head back up north. However, we have also spotted them around the islands in May, so the season, in general, is quite flexible! But always during Hawaii’s winter.

If you’re visiting over whale season, you’ll want to read our full guide on visiting Hawaii in the Winter.

What time of day is best for whale watching on Oahu?

During peak season, it’s possible to see whales any time of the day, as they are always active. Therefore, it doesn’t really matter if you choose a morning, afternoon, or even a sunset tour to see them.

But in general, you’ll find that most companies operate tours in the morning. This is a good time to go, as the temperatures are a tad cooler, and you won’t be directly in the sun the whole time. Morning is also before the trade winds pick up, so the boat ride will be smoother and more enjoyable (especially if you’re prone to seasickness).

What month is best for whale watching on Oahu?

As we mentioned, peak whale season changes year by year, so it’s hard to say exactly what month has the best whale watching opportunities. If you’re planning your vacation around this, you can consult the official Sanctuary Whale Watching Count . The count is conducted during the peak season to keep track of how many whales are spotted off the Hawaiian Islands.

In 2023, the highest number of whales was recorded in March. But in 2022, the best month for sightings was in January.

But even if you don’t go during the month with the highest numbers, you might still be lucky enough to see several on your tour! Because, as we said, they can be spotted earlier or later than peak seasons. Take a deep dive on the best time for whale watching in Hawaii.

What is the best place to see whales on Oahu?

Whales live in the water, so the best place to see them is by taking a boat tour. If you prefer to stay on land, then don’t worry. There are still a few places around Oahu where you can see them from shore.

One of the best spots on the island is up at the North Shore . Shark’s Cove , Turtle Bay, and La’ie Point are all great places to see the majestic creatures playing in the water.

If you’re down south, then you also have tons of seaside locations for viewings. Makapu’u Lighthouse is one of our favorites (it’s also a nice hike with a beautiful lookout over the ocean). You can also try Halona Blowhole, Spitting Caves, and Lana’i Lookout – all of which are just a short drive from one another along the southeastern coast.

How much is a whale watching tour on Oahu?

The price of a whale watching tour on Oahu depends on multiple factors, including the number of people in your party, the length of your tour, and the type of vessel you’re traveling in. With this in mind, the average cost for one person is around $100 – $150. However, we’ve seen some Oahu tour companies offer shorter whale watching tours for about $60 a person, which is a great deal if you’re on a budget!

cost of a whale watching tour, make it special

Another option is to hire a private charter. While this is more expensive than a shared whale watching tour, it can make more financial sense if you’re traveling with a large group or with lots of family members. While the cost of a private charter also varies from company to company, we’ve seen them as low as $400 for 1 to 4 people and upwards of $2,500 for larger boats and groups.

Is a whale watching tour worth it on Oahu?

Oahu is a really fun island to visit (especially if it’s your first time in Hawaii). But the truth is, it’s not the best island for whale watching. It doesn’t get as many whales as Maui , which has the highest recorded number of whales out of all the Hawaiian Islands.

whale watching honolulu with family

There’s a better chance of seeing whales on a boat tour than if you were to just watch them from shore. But keep in mind that you might not see any at all. This can be a big disappointment if you have your heart set on seeing whales. But if you go with lower expectations, the leisurely boat ride can be a wonderful experience on its own.

The 8 Best Whale Watching Tours on Oahu

If you’re browsing different whale watching tours on Oahu, you’ll quickly see that there are many options to choose from. Depending on your budget and interest, you can book a shared tour with other people or charter a private boat for a more exclusive experience. To help you make a decision, we’ve rounded up 7 of the best tours that we can recommend to visitors.

We also wanted to make you’re aware that boats aren’t allowed to drive directly into the area where the whales are. State and federal law require them to keep at least 100 yards back. For this reason, most tours will go close to the pods but turn off their engines. This isn’t a big deal, as you’ll be able to see those giants from that distance anyway! Plus wild animals know no bounds so curious whales may approach the boat, giving you an exhilarating close encounter.

And You Creations

The early morning whale-watching tour hosted by And You Creations is an affordable option if you’re staying in or around Waikiki. Departing from Kewalo Boat Harbor (roughly 2.5 miles from downtown Waikiki), this 2.5-hour cruise is on a powerful double-decker boat for sightseeing. As you travel past Waikiki Beach towards Diamond Head, you’ll get to enjoy stunning coastal views while you search for swimming and breaching whales.

And You Creations whale watching from waikiki

We like this tour because it also includes a Hawaiian plumeria flower ceremony and whale-watching chant. The crew also performs authentic hula and dance songs to keep everyone onboard occupied in between sightings, which is great if you’re traveling with kids.

When whales are nearby, the nature specialist will drop the hydrophone into the ocean so you can hear them singing their songs! They’re also there to help answer any questions you have about the whales (or other visible marine life creatures, for that matter).

Tours leave bright and early at 7 AM. And don’t worry about breakfast! Tickets include morning beverages as well as breakfast pastries.

Dolphin Excursions

Ditch the crowds and enjoy this 15-person (max!) tour as you look for whales around Waikiki. We particularly love this tour by Dolphin Excursions because you also have the opportunity to get off the boat to snorkel! Snorkel gear and life vests are provided for those who want to swim with tropical fish, green sea turtles, and possibly dolphins. Back on board, the marine naturalist will share insight into all the creatures you see during your tour.

This is an afternoon excursion that leaves around 2:30 PM and lasts for 3 hours. Boats leave from Waianae Boat Harbor, which is around a 25-minute drive from Ko Olina Resorts . If you prefer a more intimate experience, private charters can also be booked just for your group.

And most importantly, Dolphin Excursions guarantees whale sightings while you’re out. If you don’t see any during your outing, they’ll give you a return trip voucher for a future journey completely free of charge!

Because this is a private charter, you get to choose the start time that works best for your group out of 5-time slots. Leave first thing at 7 AM, enjoy a leisurely lunch sail, or admire the colorful sunset from a 4 PM journey. All trips last two hours, so keep that in mind when booking.

This trip leaves from Haleiwa Harbor, so it’s best if you’re staying somewhere on the North Shore . But if your tour starts later, you can still make your way up from Waikiki. It’s worth the drive, considering that the North Shore has more whale sightings than any other part of the island!

Although you’re not on the water for as long as some other whale watching tours, you’ll still get to see humpbacks, as well as other marine life like turtles, flying fish, and dolphins!

Tickets are more affordable than other excursions, which means you can still go whale watching even if you’re on a tight budget! And young kids are more than welcome as long as they are over 5 years old.

You can choose to book for up to 6, 9, or 12 people (prices vary depending on how many people are on board).

Light refreshments are served during the trip, although you’re more than welcome to bring any food or snacks if you crave something more. The Adventure Boat operates tours from December to April and at three times during the day. You can book your tour at 8 AM, 11 AM, or 2 PM.

Honolulu Sailing Company (Private Charter)

For a truly memorable experience, look no further than a trip with the Honolulu Sailing Company . Instead of a crammed boat with other tourists, you’ll be relaxing in style as you glide across the ocean on a private yacht!

As these are completely private charters, you’ll be allowed to book the vessel of your choice. Whale Watching on Oahu Tips

As you prepare for your whale watching tour, there are a couple of things to keep in mind to enhance your magical marine experience.

  • Book a tour with a sighting guarantee .  Because whales are wild animals, it’s hard to predict exactly where they’ll be around the island. For this reason, it’s possible you might not get to see them on your tour. However, some companies will put you on another boat if you don’t see them on the trip. While there aren’t many companies on Oahu that offer this, it can make a huge difference if you’re arriving early or later in the whale watching season.
  • Do your first tour earlier during your vacation. If you do book with a company that guarantees whale sightings, then you’ll need a few extra days to rebook if you need a second outing. Therefore, you shouldn’t wait until the end of your trip to book your tour, or else you won’t be able to take advantage of this offer.
  • Go on a morning tour. While this depends on your personal preference, we think morning tours are the best time to be out on the water. Not only are the waters calmer (the tradewinds usually pick up in the afternoon), but fewer boats and crowds are looking for whales. It’s also much cooler in the morning, which is great if you don’t want to be baking in the sun for hours at a time!
  • Choose the right boat. As you can see from the different types of tours above, many different types of vessels go out to see whales. Knowing which boat you want can significantly impact the type of trip you have. For example, smaller power rafts are fun and fast, but they’re not suitable for young kids, pregnant women, or people with injuries. In these situations, larger vessels or sailboats are usually the better choice!

We loved both of these itineraries!  It was an excellent use of our money.  I would recommend them to anyone who plans to travel to Hawaii.  The itineraries were both so well written and easy to use.  All the restaurant recommendations were amazing!  We loved every minute of our 2 week vacation and plan to come back to different islands and use hawaii vacation guide itineraries to help us navigate the different islands.   Kimberly H. + family

Whale Watching Virginia Beach

We like to think that whales enjoy hanging out in our waters during the cooler seasons because it’s their home away from home. When the chill of the polar regions, where they spend a majority of their time during the remaining months of the year, gets to be too much to bear, they come visit us - and who can blame them? You can join in on the fun on one of the many whale-watching cruises offering opportunities to see these magnificent creatures first-hand. You never know what you might see, so make sure that your camera is always ready!

Because whales migrate based on water and air temperatures, it’s difficult to determine the best time for whale-watching. While the prime months for sightings are typically January and February, whales have been spotted in large numbers as early as December. Give the Virginia Aquarium  or Rudee Tours  a call to see if they’ve spotted any whales yet. It’s true that if they’ve already been spotted for the season, you’re more likely to see them on an excursion – they like to hang around with each other!

Capt. Dave’s Super-Safe Dana Point Whale Watching Tour

Manute’a (pronounced mah-noo-tay-ah) is our high-tech, high-speed catamaran sailboat offering the world’s most unique dolphin and whale watching experience in Orange County .

Passenger watching common dolphins from an underwater viewing pod on Manute’a

Manute’a features Capt. Dave’s exclusive Eye-to-Eye Underwater Viewing Pods . These amazing viewing pods give you the extraordinary experience of feeling what it’s like to swim with dolphins and whales—underwater—without getting wet, making it an unforgettable whale watching tour you’ll talk about for days to come!

This vessel also features three Eye-Spy Dolphin Tram Nets on the bow for an up-close and immersive Dana Point whale watching adventure, a micro dolphin and whale museum, and live narration from expert marine naturalists for a whale watching experience in Orange County that is both fun and educational.

At the end of the Super-Safe Safari, Mrs. Capt. Dave’s legendary, delicious Triple Fudge Brownies are served complimentary!

Does the thought of being elbow to elbow with people terrify you? It terrifies us, too! That’s why Capt. Dave’s trips have always practiced social distancing with plenty of room , comfortable seating , and fewer guests .

Manute’a is the primary vessel used for our daily Dana Point whale watching tours in Orange County.

Additional Vessels

On select dates, we make available our other catamarans for the 2.5-hour signature safari..

When purchasing tickets for this cruise, your booking will be for our 2.5-hour Dolphin & Whale Signature Safari. These unique vessels offer a special dolphin and whale watching experience that is equal to Manute’a.

  • Chevron down Supplemental Catamaran: DolphinSafari

This vessel is available for public cruises on select dates and for private boat charters year-round.

DolphinSafari is the original pride of our fleet and remains a crew and passenger favorite. She was the first vessel in Southern California to offer year-round dolphin watching. And it was aboard this catamaran sailboat that Captain Dave filmed his award-winning documentary, “Wild Dolphins & Whales of Southern California“.

She is Coast Guard certified to carry up to 26 passengers, however, for optimal comfort we usually reduce guest capacity to less than 20.

About the Underwater Viewing Pods

Manute’a exclusively features two Eye-to-Eye Underwater Viewing Pods.

The ‘Pods’ are areas in the hull of the boat with cushioned padding on the floor to sit or lie down. Surrounding you on both sides is 36 square feet of bulletproof glass to see underwater.

You’re not just looking down at the animals, they’re swimming right next to you , and looking you in the eye ! If the dolphins are “chatty” you’ll be able to hear their clicks and whistles, too.

Each Underwater Pod (there are two) can usually fit 1 to 2 adults or 2 to 3 kids at a time. No special reservations or extra cost! Everyone takes turns on our Dana Point whale watching tours.

For safety reasons the Underwater Pods are not open during the entire trip. Your Captain will make an announcement when our crew members will be opening the ‘Pods’ and allowing everyone in. This usually occurs when we find a large enough pod of dolphins that are interested in interacting with the boat.

Wildlife is inherently unpredictable, therefore, the quantity of animals you may see in the Underwater Pods can vary from trip to trip.

Please note entry into the Underwater Viewing Pods requires the use of about six ladder-like steps. Guests with a disability or limited mobility may have difficulty enjoying the ‘Pods’.

What do our guests say about our Dana Point whale watching tours in Orange County?

Google review logo

I have been on several whale watch tours in Newport and Dana Point, but this trip on July 2nd, 2020 was really enjoyable even with the COVID requirements. The catamaran provides a close up view of marine mammals and an opportunity to get some great pictures. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly a great day on the water!

TripAdvisor logo

I’ve been to Disneyland, Sea World, Universal Studios—all for much more money. I ALWAYS GET MORE THAN MY MONEY’S WORTH. I’ve brought friends, family members, colleagues from work, Rotarians, etc. Each time I knew everyone would enjoy themselves—and they have. I’ve seen my stoic girlfriend break out in giggles the first time she saw a dolphin. I’ve seen my 30+-year-old son who is “too cool” to be impressed with anything anymore, grab my hand and point to several blue whales with great excitement. I could write volumes about my experiences on Capt. Dave’s Dolphin Safari. The adjectives I would use are: GREAT, WONDERFUL, SPIRITUAL, INVITING, INFORMATIVE, PEACEFUL, ADVENTUROUS, FUN, FRIENDLY, and who can forget the great brownies at the end of the trip?

Yelp Logo

This experience was way better than the dolphin watching out of Newport! The crew, the boat, the info, everything was great! The trip I went on was kind of a fundraiser for Ric O Barry's Dolphin Project to help stop the dolphin hunt in taiji japan. Happy to have participated. Cant wait to go back.

Great people who are very friendly and determined to find you marine mammals on the tour. At the same time they’re respectful of the wildlife and if say a whale shows signs of being distressed they will back off. They maintain a respectful balance between curiosity and education and conservation on these tours. Best whale watching in SoCal.

Our 2/28/2020 morning trip on the Manute'a is our third time, and we plan to return. Our trip's Captain Craig and the crew were first rate and the experience just can't be topped. We've gone to other companies at both Dana Point and Newport Beach, but Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari are the gold standard for consistent experiences. The crew knowledge is impressive. The narration and easy Q&A provide new information every trip we've taken. I enjoyed the viewing pods with my daughter last trip, but just delighted staying topside with my wife this trip.

This was the.best.day.ever. We saw so many dolphins. We were lucky to see a humpback whale over and over. We also saw sea lions. Everyone was helpful and professional! Would love to to this again. Highly recommend .

Wow!! What an amazing time with Captain Dave and his team. We loved every second of our tour! We got to see so much. The dolphin were amazing and the underwater viewing area just blew my mind. The whales were incredible. We also learned so much from the team. I especially enjoyed Dave's wife telling us all about the positive effects of negative ions being out on the water. Can't wait to go again next time! I highly recommend Captain Dave's. I promise you won't be disappointed. Book a tour! They'll even give you a homemade cookie when you get back to the dock!

We loved everything about Dave's dolphin Safari. The crew Capt Steve, Grayson & Buck were awesome. This was our first time whale watching. We saw so many dolphins & several humpback whales, sealions. The boat was very nice. We enjoyed the underwater viewing pods. We had considered taking the kids to Sea World, but I'm glad we opted to do this instead. So awesome to see these beautiful sea creatures in the wild. Oh and delicious brownies at the end. Such a wonderful experience all around

It was a beautiful day and a wonderful adventure. I've been out with the Captain Dave crew 4 times now, and each time has been better than the one before! It was the very first time out for my fiance (her first time ever on the ocean, in fact), and what a way to get started! Everyone involved were knowledgeable, professional and fun. We'll be back!

The Manute’a catamaran was a comfortable and fun ride. The midship seats are covered, at the back they are open, and the bow is open with a strong webbing next between the hulls. The crew advised about where to stand to get wet or not, and where to sit for the smoothest ride. The catamaran gives a much more stable ride than a monohull, and there is plenty of room for the 50 or so passengers on board. Captain Marie and Steve are knowledgeable and informative, and knew where to take us to see the mammals. We saw a large group (60-100) of dolphins, a sea lion, and a pod of 3 or 4 grey whales, plus the sea birds. The underwater viewing pods are popular, the crew made sure everyone had a chance to use them but didn’t rush you out. They give a good view of the dolphins swimming (like an aquarium window) but aren’t very deep: only the floor level panel is under water most of the time. It’s a nice addition but the trip would have been worth it even without the underwater pods.

My family had a wonderful time on the tour today! We saw a pod of 200+ dolphins and a blue whale. The dolphins swam with the boat, and we were able to view them up close and personal! The underwater viewing pod was an added bonus because we got to see them swimming under water. The blue whale was amazing and majestic. We saw him about 4 times, the last few times near the end of the trip. Captain Steve was kind enough to extend our tour so that we could get an additional glimpse of the majestic creature. Overall, I was impressed with the captain's skill and tenacity in finding the dolphins and whales, and with the crew members' humor and knowledge about the animals. I liked the little nature talk that they gave at the end where we got to handle whale baleen and whale's tooth. While researching whale/dolphin tours, I came across another tour in Newport Beach. It was cheaper, but didn't get very good reviews. I decided to go with Captain Dave's because of the outstanding reviews, even though it was a bit pricier. I am so glad I did, because the experience was worth every penny.

Capt Dave’s was an amazing experience!! My boyfriend and I were visiting Dana Point for the weekend and came across this place. From the moment we bought our tickets we knew it was going to be great. The lady at the ticket booth provided extraordinary customer service and was very friendly to us. Then, the actual tour began and it was just incredible. We did the sunset tour and the views were spectacular along with our captain Daniel he was just so nice and so friendly as well. We felt so comfortable during our entire experience, we didn’t want to leave! I highly recommend it 10/10. Also, the brownies they give at the end once you get back to the dock are delicious. I can’t wait to go back! It made our trip to Dana Point worthwhile and truly an unforgettable experience.

Absolutely amazing experience! We saw pods and pods of dolphins and I felt like I was swimming right next to them! There were times I could have touched them. The underwater glass pod blew my mind too. We saw a Fin whale also!! Then sea lions and a Mola Mola (sun fish ) basking in the sun. Just wondrous. Our captain worked hard to ensure we saw all this sea life and was kind, conscientious of everyone's needs and preferences too. The staff are sincere and dedicated to a top experience. I'm coming back for more and bringing all my friends here. Totally loved this!

Connecting you with the remarkable marine life off Dana Point, CA, the Dolphin & Whale Watching Capital of the World¼ and a Whale Heritage Site 🐋🐬🩈

Capt Dave's Whale Watching

Dana Point is the World’s Dolphin and Whale Watching Capital¼ and is blessed to have moderate weather all year long, and this includes mild winter weather and ocean conditions.

Great Grays: During the winter and spring months, the animal that started the whale watching industry in Dana Point can be seen migrating along the coast. Now through May, thousands of gray whales are migrating past Orange County and locals know Dana Point to be one of the best places to view the migration. Gray whales often travel within a mile or two of the coast and are believed to use Dana Point’s headlands as a landmark on their route.

Dana Point has a few year-round baleen whale species including playful humpback whales , large and friendly fin whales , and curious minke whales , too. These majestic creatures can be seen on our Dana Point whale watching tours anytime from January through December. All three species are known to be curious about boats, and will sometimes come over and check you out! That’s called whale mugging.

You also have the possibility of seeing orcas (killer whales) throughout the year while on a whale watching tour in Dana Point. They can appear at any time, without warning, so have your camera ready! Or you might have a rare encounter with pilot whales, false killer whales, or even sperm whales . Other special sightings could include basking sharks, the second-largest shark in the world, and huge elephant seals.

Hold on to your safari hats because we’re not done yet! Several species of wild dolphins are seen throughout the year while whale watching in Orange County —some in pods that can number up to 10,000. Imagine nothing but dolphins in every direction as far as the eye can see! It’s during these cooler months that we see one of our favorite dolphins, the beautiful black and white pacific white-sided dolphin . And that’s not all. Over 50 species of pelagic birds, sea lions, seals, and sharks, including the great white, mako, hammerhead, thresher, and more could be encountered.

Cetacean Declaration – Sightings Guarantee

You might be wondering, “What if I don’t see anything?” Although we locate whales or dolphins on over 95% of our trips, there are rare occasions when we don’t see any marine mammals during our whale watching tours in Dana Point. And in that unlikely event—zero whales or dolphins— regular fare guests can return for FREE for another Signature Safari (daily public whale watching trip in Orange County ) within one year from the date of the trip.

The Best Whale Watching in Seattle

Getty Images

Whales are one of the best natural sights to see during a Seattle trip.

The water off the northwestern coast of Washington affords ample opportunities to see a wide array of wildlife, including orcas and other whales. The following tours, which U.S. News determined to be the best based on the input of both travel experts and tour-takers, will take you to the ideal viewing locations. Not all of these trips leave from the Seattle area, and some may be best suited for daytrips. Most tour options depart from the San Juan Islands, which sit north of Seattle. To get to the islands, you'll need to drive about 90 miles to Anacortes, Washington, then jump on a ferry. Whale watching in this area generally occurs year-round, with peak viewing opportunities from May to October.

Note: Some whale watching trips have minimum age requirements.

Outer Island Excursions

Tickets cost $109 for adults, $99 for seniors 65 and older, $79 for youths 3 to 17 and $10 for infants (ages 2 and younger). 5 FASCINATING ANIMALS OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

Did you know.

Victoria BC is one of the best places to see whales in the wild and is located near the Juan de Fuca and Haro Straits, which are home to various types of whales, such as killer whales, humpback whales, minke whales and grey whales.

Whales are mammals, not fish.

Whales are warm-blooded creatures that breathe air through their blowholes and grow body hair. They also nurse their young with milk and have a four-chambered heart like other mammals. Whales are closely related to hippos, as they both evolved from a common ancestor that lived on land millions of years ago.

Orcas are apex predators

Orcas are apex predators and are at the top of the food chain in the ocean. They eat a variety of prey including fish, squid, and marine mammals like seals, sea lions, and even other whales.

Whales have complex communication systems.

Whales use different sounds to communicate with each other for various purposes, such as mating, socializing or warning. Some whale sounds can travel hundreds of miles underwater. Male humpback whales sing elaborate songs that can last for hours and vary by region. Killer whales have distinct dialects that identify their family groups.

Killer whales are not actually whales

Killer  whales  are the largest animals of  Delphinidae (Latin for dolphins) family ,  Dolphins are  Odontoceti  meaning “toothed  whale ” which fall under the suborder of Cetacea (Latin – Cetus) meaning “ whale “.

So technically while all  whales  are not dolphins, all dolphins are in fact  whales .

Head over to Cape Town's whale-watching escapes

Annually, Cape Town 's waters host the southern right whales, transforming the coastline into a natural stage for their breathtaking performances. From June through November, these majestic creatures can be seen, making it an ideal destination for whale-watching. Both avid nature lovers and those simply passing by are treated to a memorable spectacle of whales breaching and playing in their natural habitat.

Best time to spot whales

The best season for whale-watching around Cape Town stretches from July to October. This is when southern right whales are often spotted breaching and fluking just off the coast. For the most active displays, early mornings are ideal. During these hours, the whales typically venture closer to shore, providing a thrilling experience for onlookers along the coastline.

Prime locations for viewing

Hermanus, a mere two-hour drive from Cape Town, is globally celebrated for its exceptional whale-watching opportunities. The town's elevated cliffs offer unparalleled views of these gentle giants. For a more intimate encounter, boat tours in False Bay bring you within a safe yet awe-inspiring proximity to the whales, ensuring an unforgettable experience while maintaining respect for the marine life.

Guided tours vs Self-exploration

For guided experiences, numerous operators offer boat tours that boost your chances of whale sightings and provide educational insights about these majestic creatures. If you prefer observing from land, coastal walks in Hermanus or Simon's Town are equally rewarding. These walks are free and offer a chance to spot whales from the picturesque shorelines, blending nature's beauty with wildlife observation.

Accommodation options nearby

To fully embrace the whale-watching experience, consider an overnight stay in one of the welcoming guesthouses or bed and breakfasts in Hermanus. Alternatively, for those who enjoy the great outdoors, camping sites near False Bay offer a unique opportunity to sleep under the stars to the soothing sounds of the ocean, waking up refreshed and ready for a day filled with marine adventures.

Ten reasons to visit the Azores this summer – from whale-watching tours to volcano cooking classes

WITH dramatic cliffs, a volcanic interior and ever-green forests, Sao Miguel in the Azores has to be one of the most beautiful islands in the Atlantic.

It is almost a thousand miles off the coast of Portugal , and you can fly there via Lisbon with Portuguese airline TAP.

Sao Miguel in the Azores has to be one of the most beautiful islands in the Atlantic

You can even add a stopover in the capital at no extra cost.

Here are ten great reasons to tick Sao Miguel off your list this year . . .

WHALE SPOTTING

THE waters around Sao Miguel are home to at least 28 species of whales and dolphins — and they are not shy about putting on a show.

Tour company Terra Azul has three-hour trips to see them, from ÂŁ54pp.

FUN NEIGHBOURHOOD

PONTA Delgada is the compact capital of the Azores and has become a buzzing port city while retaining its old-world charm.

Start by heading into the picturesque central square to see Sao Sebastiao church and the old city gates.

Then, wander down the narrow streets lined with 17th-century buildings with flower-filled balconies to find a local restaurant.

The wow moment.

ANOTHER unusual perk is the iron-rich thermal pools heated by the island’s volcanoes.

Surrounded by forests, the thermal pool in Terra Nostra garden was built in 1780 and is supplied by a thermal spring, with water temperatures sitting around 35C-40C.

The pool is a dark orange colour because it is enriched with minerals, making it excellent for your skin.

FANTASTIC FEAST

THE bubbling water and mud springs of the village of Furnas make for a great culinary experience.

There, they make volcano-cooked stew — a dish of various meats, potatoes and vegetables assembled in pots then placed underground to slow-cook for up to five hours in the steam of the hot springs.

It results in a smoky flavour.

While you wait, wander around Lake Furnas.

Huge clouds of vapour rise from the springs, giving the place an almost Jurassic Park feel.

Or take a dip in the Pool of Youth.

NEW FOR 2024

THE Gin Library (gin-library.com) has Europe’s largest collection of gins, with a total of 1,410 different varieties.

And although the place itself is not new, many of its tipples are.

The best in the collection has to be Ghosts of the Ocean, created by the library’s founder and infused with seaweed and lemon myrtle, among other botanicals.

CULTURAL FIX

AZOREAN people have a distinct sense of pride about what the islands have to offer — and that includes tea.

Sao Miguel is home to Gorreana (gorreana.pt/en), which claims to be the oldest tea plantation in Europe.

You can take a guided tour to learn about its rich history and how the tea makes its way from harvest to packaging.

April to October are the best times to visit to see the factory in action.

WITH THE KIDS

YOUNGSTERS will love scurrying through fascinating lava tunnel Gruta do Carvao, with their hard hats on.

The deep and dark caves, with blackened stalactites dangling above, are the longest of their kind on the island.

There are a 45-minute tours available (grutadocarvao.amigos dosacores.pt/en).

TAKE in the best of the island’s stunning views on an off-road jeep tour with Azores For All (azoresforall.com/en).

There are full and half-day tours from ÂŁ22 which will take you to the edge of the largest calderas (depressions formed when volcanoes erupt and collapse) on the island.

You can stop to take photos of the stunning views over the island while you are at the top.

ONE MORE TREAT

MAKE sure you do not miss out on trying Azorean desserts.

Leite creme — a Portuguese version of creme brulee — is a common menu feature and it is unbelievably creamy and delicious.

A Terra, the restaurant in the Octant Furnas hotel (furnas.octant hotels.com) does a cracking tea-flavoured one that comes with biscuits for dipping.
