The great glenorchy alpine base camp.

The Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp provides world-class guided wilderness experiences through the incredible UNESCO South West New Zealand World Heritage Area. Avoiding marked trails and instead preferring to operate off-track, small private group experiences for all skill levels are available every single day of the year. The team at The Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp say ‘the best connections happen when there’s no WiFi’.

You’ll have the choice of either the snow-based ‘Snow Kingdom’ experience or the ‘Your Moonlight Kingdom’ experience during the tramping season.

Snow Kingdom

This is a popular winter heli glamping sesh! Think snow caving, snowshoeing, snow skills, great family fun in the high alpine region with a pretty special glamping scene – wood-fired tent heater, camp beds, heavy canvas tent, and one of New Zealand’s best mountain guides to help get you there.

Your Moonlight Kingdom

This is also a popular heli glamp available during the tramping season (no snow) with all the same luxuries as Snow Kingdom (wood-fired tent heater, camp beds and an expert local guide). Think off-track mountain movement skills, a scree traverse, swimming in high alpine tarns, and world-class scenery – all with the ability to dial the difficulty up or down to suit the group.

3 Mates – 6 Days – 5 Adventures

To celebrate the launch of the 365 Queenstown iPhone app Mountain Scene have two Queenstown adventures to give away. One New Zealand and one Australian winner will be drawn in January. Enter on www.scene.co.nz .

grabaseat will fly you to Queenstown. Mountain Scene will put you up in a Blue Peaks luxury apartment. Apex Rental Cars will give you a vehicle to get around in and we’ve teed up five iconic Queenstown adventures for you and your mates.

Jump off the Kawarau Bridge with AJ Hackett Bungy. Jetboat the world-famous Shotover Canyon with Shotover Jet. View Queenstown from above and ride the Gondola and Luge with Skyline and take a cruise across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak on the iconic TSS Earnslaw.

The competition coincides with the launch of Queenstown’s first free iPhone app which is now available on the Apple iTunes store – 365 Queenstown – Adventure Every Day.

Continuing its charge from the print into the multimedia world, Queenstown media company Mountain Scene launched the free iPhone application as an extension of its 365 Queenstown brand.

Updated every day with local information, 365 Queenstown is your insider’s guide to what’s on, where to go and how to find it, as well as making sure you get the best deals in town.

In one application you’ll find offers, information and maps for Queenstown accommodation, activities, bars, restaurants – and the nightlife.

Whether you’re seeking adventure activities, a great outdoors experience, enjoying a romantic getaway, shopping or just eating and drinking, you’ll find it all there in the palm of your hand.

Queenstown’s the jewel in the crown of New Zealand tourism attracting 1.7 million visitors annually.

Mountain Scene’s general manager Katrina Priest says the way that people make their decisions while on holiday has evolved.

“They’re consuming much more media than ever before, with a big surge in the use of social and mobile media to make these decisions.

“An app for Queenstown seemed a logical progression for us. We’ve made it easy for our print and online clients to ride the mobile media wave by creating a travel app for visitors to Queenstown. It’s a win-win.”

The app is primarily aimed at those people visiting Queenstown from around the world wanting local information at the touch of a button.

Priest is quick to point out there’s plenty there for locals and seasonal workers too, with a lot more to come.

“The 365 Queenstown app opens up some exciting possibilities. What we’ve released is version one. We’re well on the way to adding more functionality.

“A gigs, events and entertainment engine has been submitted to Apple and should be live soon, while open homes, let or lease and other classified opportunities are being investigated,” Priest says.

Jones Around The World

The Ultimate Queenstown Itinerary & Travel Guide

Spending some time on the South Island of New Zealand and looking for an epic Queenstown itinerary? Well, look no further because I’ve got you covered (and you’re definitely not alone).

Queenstown is by far one of the most popular tourist destinations in New Zealand , and this is for a very good reason. As the adventure capital of the world, Queenstown offers so many activities for you to experience.

From skydiving over massive mountains to bungee jumping at the first-ever commercial bungy site and rafting the famous Shooter river, you’ll find so much to do here. You simply can’t visit Queenstown without taking part in at least one of the many adrenaline-inducing activities available.

Queenstown Itinerary - Travel Guide

Additionally, the town is surrounded by mountains, making it the perfect location for hiking, and in the winter months, you can take to the epic slopes for some skiing and snowboarding.

Queenstown will always hold a special place in my heart, so I am truly stoked to be sharing this itinerary with you guys.

The thriving nightlife and the scenic picnics by the lake make Queenstown a place where memories are made and good times are compulsory. I hope that you have just as good a time as I had in Queenstown, New Zealand, and I hope you enjoy using my ultimate Queenstown itinerary.

Queenstown Itinerary

Where to Stay in Queenstown

Queenstown is a lot smaller than most people realize when they first arrive, and the city center can be explored in less than 10-15 minutes really. Because of this, accommodation does get booked well in advance, so you want to book your hotel, hostel, or Airbnb ASAP.

Luxury Accommodation – Scenic Quites

Scenic Suites Queenstown is a hillside resort with excellent lake and mountain views. The facilities you’ll enjoy include an on-site restaurant, a bar, and complimentary Wi-Fi. Just take a look at the pictures, and you’ll be sold.

While it may be a little pricey, it’s worth every penny and would be the highlight of your trip to Queenstown. It’s also just a six-minute drive from Lake Wakatipu and about four minutes from downtown Queenstown.

Mid-Range Accommodation – Park Boutique Hotel

Queenstown Park Boutique Hotel is an award-winning luxury hotel that comes complete with stunning panoramic alpine views, world-class service, and incredibly stylish rooms. It’s well located, being just a few minutes walk from the city center.

The Wi-Fi is free, and the restaurant on-site regularly receives stellar reviews. It’s one of the top picks in the city and would definitely provide for an unbelievably comfortable stay in Queenstown.

Budget Accommodation – Adventure Q2 Hostel

Adventure Q2 Hostel is perfect for backpackers and by far the best hostel in Queenstown. I have personally stayed in four different Queenstown hostels during my time in New Zealand, and this was hands down the best hostel I’ve stayed in.

Not only is it clean and organized (not something you find often in Queenstown hostels), but it’s also very social. With in-house activities run most nights of the week and also being close to The Village Green, which is perfect for enjoying a drink with friends.

It’s a smaller hostel which I personally prefer because I find these are much more homely and are better for making new friends. Adventure Q2 is also perfectly located, it’s only a couple of minutes walk into the city center. It’s actually the perfect distance for finding your way home after a fun night out in Queenstown.

Getting Around Queenstown

The truth is, if you really want to get off the beaten path and see what New Zealand truly has to offer in terms of natural wonders, I would always suggest driving around by yourself.

As a country that really does lack reliable public transport, I would always suggest that you have access to your own car while traveling anywhere within New Zealand. However, Queenstown is definitely an exception here.

It is by far one of the best set-up places in New Zealand for getting around using public transport alone. The majority of the tour companies, like Canyon Swing, White Water Rafting, and popular day trips to places like Milford Sound, offer coach services to and from all major attractions. This way, Queenstown really takes care of its car-free tourists.

Therefore, most transport to and from any surrounding activities can be planned from within the city center itself, which is very small and easy to walk around simply on foot.

And in the winter there are buses which will take you to and from the local ski slopes. There is also a bus service that will take you to and from the Queenstown Airport and neighboring towns too.

BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN QUEENSTOWN | TRAVEL GUIDE

“There is a reason Queenstown is known as the adventure capital of the world. Gather your courage and discover why first hand.”

The legends who precede you have jumped off bridges, conquered shallow rivers with spinning jet boats and explored the depths of these towering mountains. Queenstown is a beautiful natural playground, inviting you to ‘go big or go home’.

3 days queenstown itinerary

Hit The Slopes!

Many people like to explore New Zealand in the summertime, but they forget that Queenstown and its surrounding mountains truly transform into a winter wonderland as well. There are actually three different ski resorts, all operating within a few hours from Queenstown, so you definitely won’t be stuck for places to try out.

The three resorts include:

  • Coronet Peak – “Only 20 minutes from central Queenstown. New Zealand’s first commercial ski field, celebrating good times since 1947.”
  • Cardrona – “With wide open trails, challenging chutes, world-class beginner facilities and the Southern Hemisphere’s most extensive terrain park, there’s something for every snow enthusiast who likes skiing and snowboarding at Cardrona.”
  • The Remarkables – “Experience big mountain terrain just 45 minutes from central Queenstown.”

All three are very popular spots for beginners and professionals alike and are guaranteed to be some of the best snowboarding and skiing facilities you’ll ever experience.

Fair warning, though, they’re always quite busy during the winter season, so if you’re around at the right time, don’t miss out on the opportunity to learn some new skills.

VISIT NEVIS – AJ HACKETT BUNGY, SWING & CATAPULT

Try out the most famous swing in the world –  The Nevis Swing . Featuring a terrifying 300m arc to swing across, it is actually one of the biggest swings in the world. And it is definitely one of the most thrilling experiences you can sign up for while in Queenstown.

But what I think is actually more terrifying is New Zealand’s highest bungee jump. I found the courage to conquer this one, and it was an unforgettable adrenaline rush and bucket list achievement.

The Nevis Bungy : “Go full throttle with our 440-foot bungy – the highest in New Zealand. Freefall for 8.5 seconds in a blitz of pure fear and adrenaline. Don’t say we didn’t warn you because this will definitely put the cement in your coffee.”

Nevis Bungy Jump - Queenstown Things to Do

EXPERIENCE THE WORLD’S HIGHEST CLIFF JUMP

The Shotover Canyon Swing is not only the world’s highest cliff-jumping adventure, but I’d argue that it’s the most scenic as well. After running and launching yourself off the 358-foot Shotover Canyon cliff edge, you’ll look down at the beautiful bright blue Shotover River.

The free fall itself is 197 feet, combined with a 656-foot swing out across the stunning canyon, which is the only place in the world where this adventure design system exists. Next up is the Shotover Canyon FOX, which was my personal favorite.

The best part about it is that you can choose all these different “swing styles”.  I went with “The Chair” because it seemed the most interesting. They play around with you a bit with the feeling of “leaning too far back in your chair”, which really added to the experience.

The highlight for me was the staff working there. Not only are they extremely professional, but they’re also absolutely hilarious. They go out of their way to be playful and comedic while making fun and trying to scare you that little bit more.

They know when to be serious, but for the most part, they will have a lot of fun and have an amazing laugh. They absolutely make the experience of jumping off a cliff one to remember.

You could do just one of these, but the combo for both of these is only $369 N.Z.D, which I think is a pretty sweet deal.

Must do Queenstown

GO ON A SHOTOVER JET BOAT RIDE

The Shotover Jet Boat ride looks so much fun. I never had the chance to try this one because I decided to go for the whitewater rafting experience instead. But when I saw this ride in action during my time rafting, I wished I had the chance to give it a go as well.

It’s fast, powerful, and extremely adrenaline-inducing. You get to experience the real contrast of a serene, beautiful river and canyon environment mixed with a fast and powerful jet boat ride.

It’s been around since 1965 and is considered one of the world’s ultimate jet boating experiences. It’s definitely one of the top 10 things to do in Queenstown and not something you want to skip.

Shotover Jet - cheap queenstown accommodation

GO WHITEWATER RAFTING ON THE SHOTOVER RIVER

An experience of a lifetime. Whitewater rafting is exciting, scary, and full of surprises. There is a real danger when it comes to taking on the uncontrollable grade 4-5 rapids of the famous Shotover River. Rapids include Aftershock, Squeeze, Toilet, and Pinball. You also get to raft down a small waterfall at the end.

The instructors were professional. They knew exactly when to get us thinking quickly and panicking for our life. But they also knew how to make us feel safe and in control of the boat.

Teamwork is hugely emphasized, but don’t be afraid to go solo either.

I wasn’t the only solo traveler taking on the rapids, so it felt great when they put me in a boat with many other solo travelers too. Whitewater rafting is the only real extreme sport that’s left in Queenstown that you can partake in.

So don’t miss out on this exciting adventure.

Best Places to Visit in Queenstown

VISIT THE LEDGE BUNGY JUMP & SWING

It’s not the highest, but it is the most unique jump you can do in Queenstown. You have the choice of choosing the 154-foot bungee jump or the swing. Both are stomach-dropping and are located right in the heart of the town, which means it’s super accessible and is set over the most stunning views available in all of Queenstown.

You can enjoy a gondola ride up to Bob’s Peak, where you can view the gorgeous lakes and mountains surrounding the town. Then you can launch yourself off the edge with the ultimate freestyle bungee. This means you can jump off any way you like so you can make the most dramatic jump you can possibly think of.

Ledge bungy Jumping Queenstown 2019

GO CANYONING

This is one of the most enjoyable and diverse things to do in Queenstown. There are zip lines across the gorge and opportunities for climbing, hiking, scrambling, swimming, and hiking.

As you work from the top of the gorge to the bottom, you get the chance to slide down natural water slides, dive through waterfalls, and jump off rocks into stunningly clear blue pools. You will feel like a badass, and you will have a lot of fun.

Like all of the adventure activities, the staff at Canyoning Queenstown are professional and fun. The guides know the perfect balance between having a laugh with you, and also making sure you are being safe during the whole adventure.

Canyoning Queenstown, New Zealand

TRY SKYDIVING

EMBRACE THE FEAR!

Jump out of a plane at 15,000 feet with a 60-second free-fall at 124m/hour. This will be the ultimate experience of a lifetime as you’ll get to marvel at the incredible skyline Queenstown is blessed with.

With mind-blowing views over the lakes and mountains, this isn’t just a regular skydiving experience. It’s considered one of the most beautiful ranges in the world. And with the choice of jumping out at altitudes of 15,000 feet, 12,000 feet, and 9,000 feet, I can guarantee you will make some memories for life.

I didn’t get to jump with them, but I’d recommend the people at NZONE Skydive .

“NZONE Skydive, Queenstown is New Zealand’s 1st Tandem Skydive Operation. Having commenced operating in 1990 we have gained over 25 years experience in the industry and jumped over 300,000 customers to-date.”

Skydiving over Queenstown with NZONE Skydive

GO TO THE ORIGINAL KAWARAU BRIDGE BUNGY JUMP

Another bungee jump? Well, this is Queenstown, so what did you expect? This bungee jump is special, though. It’s the original site of the Queenstown bungy jump. This means it was the first ever organized commercial bungy site in history.

It’s seen over 650,000 people jump from the historic suspension bridge over the years. It even offers the option for splashing into the crystal blue water with your head as you reach the end of your bungee line.

It’s also the only company in Queenstown that offers the chance to bungee jump in tandem.  I think if you’re going to bungy jump, you should do the biggest one possible, but this one is great for people who might be really scared or for people who are on a tighter budget.

“As you shuffle out to the edge of the bridge, heart pounding and mind racing, remember this – you’ve found yourself at the World Home of Bungy. This is the original . Many people have come and gone, on a mission to push the limits and test themselves. Time for you to make the same leap of faith.”

Bungy Jumps in Queenstown

HIKE TO THE TOP OF BEN LOMOND PEAK

The Ben Lomond track is the perfect full-day hike to get your insulin levels back down after all of the thrilling adrenaline-boosting activities you must have been having. The roundtrip journey to the peak will take you anywhere from five to eight hours to return.

Personally, as someone with a decent fitness level who is used to full-day hiking, I found it only took me around five hours to complete (and I did have quite a few breaks on the way).

The return journey to Ben Lomond Peak is steep and challenging at times. The last hour of the hike does require some climbing abilities and good fitness levels.

But overall, I saw many people doing this with their (older) kids, and I myself didn’t wear hiking shoes (just a pair of basic runners). So don’t be put off; I feel that anyone with standard fitness can do the Ben Lomond hike, and the views at the top are well worth the hours of hiking to get there.

Queenstown Itinerary

The trailhead begins at the top of the Skyline Gondola on Queenstown Hill, but you can walk from the bottom (at Tiki Track) if you want the extra challenge or to save some cash.

I definitely recommend you start early in the morning (because the track is very exposed and can get hot) and take lots of water.

Thoroughly enjoy taking in the breathtaking views of the Remarkables Mountains range and Coronet Peak standing across the lake. The views get better and better the more you climb, and trust me, that final push at the end makes it all worth it.

Tip : Avoid this in the wintertime as often the track will be closed due to snow and avalanche warnings.

day trips from queenstown

CATCH THE SUNRISE OR SUNSET AT THE TOP OF QUEENSTOWN HILL

This is the perfect place to find the most incredible views without a full day of hiking. It has similar views to the Ben Lomond, but Queenstown Hill is only a 2-3 hour return walk.

Watching a sunrise or sunset here is one of the best things to see in Queenstown – and it’s easy to see why. The track starts on Belfast Street and takes you through a woodland trail on the way, which is perfect on a hot summer’s day to keep you out of the direct sun.

In the end, the hike will reward you with a fantastic 360-degree view of the surroundings. Including Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables, Cecil Peak, and Kawarau River. It’s well worth the effort and is the perfect stop for sunset.

Tip : Make sure to take a torch with you for the return journey coming back down.

GOOD FOOD & DRINK RECOMMENDATIONS IN QUEENSTOWN

Finding the perfect place to eat is one of the best things to do in Queenstown. Adding well-reviewed restaurants and local favorites to your Queenstown itinerary will make sure you only get the best of New Zealand cuisine.

FERGBURGER – RATED ONE OF THE TOP 10 BEST BURGERS IN THE WORLD

This might sound bad… But the first thing I did when I drove into Queenstown was to park my car and head straight into Fergbuger to find out what the hype was all about.

You really can’t miss it. There is usually a long line of people waiting outside. It’s always busy, and it’s considered one of the top 10 Best Burgers in the World. Some people think they’re overrated; some say a Fergburger is the best burger they have ever tried.

In my opinion, it’s worth finding out.

With a decent menu of options, you will have plenty of time to decide which one to order as you queue outside for over an hour. However, a local tip I heard was that you could ring the shop in advance to order your burger, avoiding the queue.

But in my experience, this didn’t work as I found that the phone lines were always too busy to take my call. Personally, I found waiting in line part of the experience. But if you truly hate queuing up, I’d recommend going in at a less busy time, such as in the mornings or later at night.

Tip : Order your burger to go (the shop is always too packed to sit inside and eat anyways), then you can walk over to Queenstown Lake and enjoy your burger with a stunning view.  Also, these burgers are huge. One is filling, so make sure you go in on an empty stomach.

TRY AN ICONIC NEW ZEALAND COOKIE TIME AT THE COOKIE MUNCHER COOKIE BAR

One of my favorite memories in New Zealand was as simple as tasting my first ever Cookie Time Cookie . They’re all over the supermarkets, gas stations, and general stores.

Cookie Time is iconic in the whole country, and what better way to try your first Cookie Time Cookie than by having a warm, freshly baked one? Cookie Time Queenstown’s menu is packed with so many incredible choices and flavors and is the perfect sweet treat after a full day of adventuring.

HAVE THE BEST ICE CREAM AT PATAGONIA CHOCOLATES

Literally, the best ice cream you can find in New Zealand is at Patagonia Chocolates. I tried my first-ever Patagonia ice cream while I was in Wanaka. It was so delicious I just had to have some again on my visit to Queenstown.

They don’t only sell ice cream, though. There is also an extensive selection of world-class chocolates and truffles, as well as hot drinks such as coffee and hot chocolate.

PIG AND WHISTLE, QUEENSTOWN

If you’re not really interested in lining up for over an hour to order a Fergurger, and sweet treats aren’t really going to cut it either. Then the Pig And Whistle should definitely satisfy your appetite with some wholesome, hearty, and traditional English pub food.

One of my favorite things about New Zealand was the homely pub meals. Serving traditional Kiwi meat pies, bangers and mash, and traditional roast dinners, the Pig And Whistle, like most Kiwi pubs, will make you feel right at home.

There’s also a great choice of beers, ciders, and wines to choose from. As well as the lively atmosphere and often live music which make this place feel perfect no matter what the time of year.

NIGHTLIFE IN QUEENSTOWN

Every Queenstown itinerary must feature a few bars or pubs. This way, you get to immerse yourself in the city’s vibrant nightlife, and you’ll get to meet some of the locals.

Rhino’s Ski Shack

If you want a little European/Kiwi bar hybrid, then Rhino’s Ski Shack is the perfect little bar for you. It’s where many of the skiers and snowboarders hang out after a day on the slopes (but in the summer, it’s just as busy and cool).

It has a little hidden basement shack-style bar with options for food, drinks, and party games. Rhino’s is the ultimate evening spot to socialize, chat, meet new people and experience a truly warm and friendly vibe. Later on, the place takes on more of a club vibe with a dance floor and buzzing music.

Vinyl Underground

A lesser-known club featuring a live DJ, open mic nights, and a pool table, Vinyl Underground is open until 4 am for drinking, dancing, and socializing. It’s a popular spot for ending your night in Queenstown, and it’s always thriving with good vibes and fun people.

If you’re looking for a cozy little cocktail bar, then BarUp is the place for you. Perfect in summer and winter alike, this spot is popular for its comprehensive cocktail menu and its open fire and cozy vibe. You’ll also enjoy live music, New Zealand wines, and craft beers.

QUEENSTOWN TRAVEL TIPS

Like with any holiday, there are certain tips and tricks that one could use to get a better deal. From the best Airbnbs in Queenstown to combo deals and some of the best free things to do in Queenstown, I’ve got you covered.

SAVE MONEY WITH COMBO DEALS

When I booked my adventure activities in Queenstown, I found it was great to book a few at once with the combo deals.

Personally, I chose to book a deal that included the Shotover Flying Fox and Canyon Swing Combo. This is a helicopter ride over the canyon that ends at the top of the Shotover River for a whitewater rafting experience.

I saved over $150, and it was all organized for me on the day as the staff was all aware of the deal I purchased. So I was picked up and dropped off at all the correct places at the right time. This is a good way to get a lot packed into one day, and it makes the day super exciting, and action-packed.

I highly recommend booking a combo deal if you plan on taking on a lot of activities in a short space of time.

8 BUCKET LIST ACTIVITIES in Queenstown, New Zealand

BOOK YOUR ACCOMMODATION & ACTIVITIES IN ADVANCE

Seriously, Queenstown books up fast. I am definitely one of those last-minuters when traveling. I like flexibility, and I never know how long I want to be someplace. However, with Queenstown, it really is necessary to have an idea of where you want to stay and what you want to do before you arrive.

I found myself having to sleep in my car twice due to my lack of planning and pre-booking a hostel (they were all sold out). I visited in December and January (the busiest times of the year), but generally, Queenstown is one place that is always busy. So it’s not worth the risk of leaving things to the last minute.

This includes hostels, Airbnbs, hotels, tours, and activities. I know a few people who couldn’t even get in for the Canyon Swing because it was already fully booked for the week they were there.

TAKE A FREE WALKING TOUR

For a real Kiwi experience, discover Queenstown with a friendly local guide on a 2-2.5 hour walking tour.  It’s the perfect way to learn about the town and how to find your way around.

The tours start at either 10 am or 2 pm daily at the Memorial Arch and include lots of useful info such as history, stories, and even some tips on the best nightlife spots.

In a typical Kiwi manner, they are always running no matter the weather. So if it’s cold, wrap up, turn up, and don’t forget to tip your guide at the end if you enjoyed it.

How to Spend 4 Days in Queenstown: The Perfect Itinerary

How to Spend 4 Days in Queenstown: The Perfect Itinerary

If you love adventure, breathtaking scenery, great wine and delicious food, it’s hard to think of anywhere more perfect than Queenstown. Surrounded by a crown of mountains, this buzzing little resort town on New Zealand’s South Island has made a name for itself for being the adventure capital of the world.

Adrenaline junkies flock here to test their mettle at the bungees, swings and skydives. Snowsports enthusiasts love the winter slopes and wine connoisseurs enjoy the abundance of vineyards in the surrounding Central Otago region.

If you want to spend 3 or 4 days here, planning your Queenstown itinerary can seem a little daunting when there’s just no end of things to do.

I’m here to help!

I’ve spent quite a bit of time in Queenstown (I couldn’t get enough of the place!) so I’ve picked out some of my favourite attractions to add to your bucket list. Ready? Here’s how to spend 4 days in Queenstown .

Quick facts about Queenstown

4 day queenstown itinerary - Lake Wakatipu at sunset with the mountains lit up by the orange glow.

Don’t miss the Remarkable Mountains at sunset on your Queenstown itinerary!

  • Queenstown is a resort town located in the Southwest of New Zealand’s South Island on the shores of Lake Wakatipu.
  • The Maori name for Queenstown is Tahuna which means ‘shallow bay’.
  • Queenstown is the birthplace of bungee jumping. AJ Hackett turned this hair-raising sport into a commercial venture from Kawarau Bridge.
  • The Shotover River was one of the richest gold-bearing rivers in the world before the 19th century Gold Rush.
  • Queenstown Gardens are home to the world’s first Frisbee Golf Course.
  • The Skyline Queenstown Gondola is the steepest cable car lift in the world and it opened in 1968 together with the luge.
  • Queenstown has a long ski season which lasts from early to mid-June through to early October.
  • The town is in the Otago Wine Region and over 900 hectares of the surrounding land is dedicated to wine production.

How to get to Queenstown

View of the lake with surrounding forest and mountains.

The view halfway up Queenstown Hill

The easiest way to get to Queenstown is by car or bus. The town does have an international and domestic airport so it’s also possible to fly – although it’s not the most budget-friendly option!

If you’re not a big fan of driving, there is a good range of bus options available. You can make use of popular backpacker tour buses such as Stray and Kiwi Experience.

These buses are great if you’re keen to take the more scenic route to Queenstown. Their passes are flexible and suit a range of budgets and timeframes (you can find out all about Kiwi Experience and how it works here ).

Another bus you can take is InterCity . It’s a relatively affordable service but if you want to keep costs down then make sure you book your tickets in advance.  I recommend getting the FlexiPass for this as it works a bit like a hop-on, hop-off bus pass.

Best time to visit  Queenstown

4 days in Queenstown itinerary lake views with the town centre below.

Another view from Queenstown Hill…

The best time to visit Queenstown really depends on what you’re interested in but in my opinion, there’s really no wrong or right time. The town is packed with adventures all year round.

If you love snow sports then make sure you time your visit with the ski season. Unsurprisingly, temperatures can get pretty chilly this time of year and not all outdoor activities will be running.

That being said, there’s still plenty to do whether you want to hit the slopes or not !

I visited Queenstown in winter and loved it. Yes, the town was busy but most people left for the mountains during the day.

In summer, it tends to fill up with tourists and hotels are usually more expensive. Still, it comes down to preference. Whatever time of year you go, I can guarantee that the atmosphere will be electric.

How to spend 4 days in Queenstown

Queenstown Hill… but you can see why there are so many photos

Now that we’ve sorted out the logistics, it’s time to move on to the fun part – your 4-day Queenstown itinerary!

Day 1: Enjoy the Skyline

Put on your walking boots and hike the most famous trail in Queenstown.

The Skyline and Ben Lomond

4 day Queenstown itinerary - view from the Skyline. The Remarkable Mountains in the distance.

Queenstown from the Skyline

Queenstown is cradled by mountains so it goes without saying that there are some truly spectacular views. Its most popular local walking trail is up Ben Lomond. If you don’t want to commit to a solid 7-hour hike then you can walk or take the gondola up Bob’s Peak to the Skyline.

Here, you can find a breathtaking lookout point, cafes, souvenir shops and the formidable AJ Hackett Ledge Bungy . It’s not for the faint-hearted. If you’re not quite ready to take it on then you can also do the luge (my preferred choice).

To get to the summit of Ben Lomond, follow the same route up Bob’s Peak and carry on going past the Skyline. The trail is pretty steep but you can cheat and take the gondola up some of the way.

Safety tip: In winter, the final leg will most likely be under a blanket of snow and ice. You don’t need a guide but it’s a good idea to have the right equipment (boots, thick clothing and walking poles etc) and bring a friend along just in case.

Day 2: Trip to Milford Sound

The best day trip from Queenstown is hands down Milford Sound.

Located in Fiordland National Park in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island, Milford Sound is known for its breathtaking rainforests; mountains that rise up out of the inky water; tumbling waterfalls and wildlife, including fur seals, penguins and dolphins.

With an average rainfall of 182 days in the year, Milford Sound is one of the wettest inhabited places in the country – and even the world.

It’s an extraordinary experience and deserves a place on any New Zealand itinerary. Here’s how to see it:

Milford Sound day trip

Milford Sound. Snow-capped mountains with a body of water in front.

Milford Sound on an unusually sunny day

The easiest way to see Milford Sound is by cruise. Alternatively, you can take a scenic flight or hike some of the popular Milford Sound trails. To get there, drive or take the coach (which is a lot less hassle).

The most cost-effective way to enjoy Milford Sound is if you book a day tour that includes all your travel and a cruise.

There is a range of tour companies to choose from, including InterCity and Kiwi Experience . They depart every morning from Queenstown and arrive in Milford Sound at lunchtime. Return journeys depart in the afternoon and arrive in Queenstown in the early evening.

The tour takes you on a scenic drive through the mountains before embarking on a cruise across the fjord (‘Sound’ is actually a misnomer) before looping back around. The whole cruise takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. Highlights include Lady Bowen Falls, Mitre Peak and Seal Rock.

You can buy food on the cruise but I would still bring some snacks and a packed lunch too. View the Milford Sound tour here.

I recommend doing this Milford Sound tour as it’s the one I did and I loved it. It includes transfers from Queenstown and a cruise featuring live commentary. It’s also an Eco-Certified tour so it’s kind to the planet too.

Day 3: Do a tour

Queenstown is in the middle of the Central Otago wine region and there are some truly amazing local vineyards producing some of the most prestigious wines in the world.

Queenstown Wine Trail Tour

4 day Queenstown itinerary - Central Otago wine region. A girl standing next to an old Mount Difficulty truck.

Enjoying the Central Otago region

If you want to get a true taste of the local area, do a Queenstown wine tour. It takes you to four cellar doors and you have the opportunity to taste up to 20 of the best Central Otago wines, including its famous Pinot Noirs.

The tour is a flexible 5-6 hours and you get to stop for lunch (at your own cost) at a gorgeous vineyard. The tours are small-group only and you get to learn a lot about the local area and why it’s so surprisingly perfect for producing top-quality wine.  View the tour here.

Make sure you bring plenty of snacks. I learnt this the hard way…

Tip: Wine not your thing? If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan I recommend this 4WD Half Day Tour complete with Afternoon Tea! Alternatively, explore the canopies in this top-rated boat cruise on the TSS Earnslaw!

Day 4 : Become a thrill-seeker

Do some local activities.  Want to get hair-raising? You decide!

Queenstown Hill hike

View from the hill and a girl standing on a rock with mountains behind.

Summit of Queenstown Hill

Queenstown Hill is another local trail with breathtaking panoramic views from the summit. At just 500-metres, it’s a short ascent but it still has its fair share of steep sections.

Start the trail from the small car park just off Belfast Terrace, a few minutes from the town centre. Wind your way through pine forests to the summit of Te Tapu-nui (mountain of intense sacredness) and you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views from all directions as far as the eye can see.

Shotover Jet

There are many adrenaline-fuelled activities in Queenstown. It is, after all, the adventure capital of the world !

One of my absolute favourites is the Shotover Jet Boat . Located on the Shotover River, this thrilling experience treats you to the beauty of the canyons at top speed.

Adult tickets are about 149 NZD and you get kitted out in a thick waterproof jacket, a lifejacket and gloves because it gets pretty cold on the river.

Alternative activities

Shotover Jet for 4 day Queenstown itinerary

The Shotover Jet

Here are a few extra activities if you feel like swapping them in or have some more time:

Skydiving

New Zealand is no stranger to epic skydives and where better to do it than over Queenstown? A test for the ultimate thrill-seekers, Nzone Skydive offers tandem dives at 9,000, 12,000 and 15,000 ft.

Prices start at 299 NZD but you can upgrade to get photos and videos of your best hair-raising moments.

Skiing

If you’re heading to Queenstown in winter, you might want to make use of its epic ski season. Check out this website to find packages and equipment rentals for both skiing and snowboarding.

Adventure sports

There is a wealth of wild activities to do in Queenstown. Just some of them include ebike rentals, Kawarau Zipride, Nevis Catapult, Nevis Bungy, Ledge Swing and Ledge Bungy. Check out the full list here.

Just an FYI, the Nevis Bungy is the highest in New Zealand so stick that on your bucket list!

Frisbee golf

Frisbee golf is perhaps the most unlikely activity on the list. This unusual sport takes place in Queenstown Gardens and you can get involved in games and tournaments on Sundays.

The rules are similar to golf and this particular course has eighteen holes.

Where to stay in Queenstown

Jucy Snooze hostel capsules in Queenstown

The pods at Jucy Snooze Queenstown!

Queenstown is popular with backpackers so accommodation is fairly pricey wherever you stay.

Hostels were more in my budget at the time but there is a range of options to suit any preference, including hotels and Airbnbs.

Here are a few of my top recommendations below:

Budget-friendly

  • The most popular backpacker hostels are Nomads, Haka Lodge and YHA Queenstown Lakefront.
  • If you’re looking for more pod-style hostels with a little more privacy with a backpacker vibe, my favourite one is Blacksheep Backpackers. It has a pool too! I also love Jucy Snooze. Each pod is spacious and comfortable with a locker underneath for your bag. You have your own light, USB charging cable and a blind you can pull down for privacy . Tahuna Pod Hostel is another great option.
  • For affordable private rooms, the award-winning Mi-Pad Smart Hotel is a good choice.
  • Handy if you’ve hired a vehicle, Queenstown Motel Apartments is a reasonably priced 4-star hotel with a kitchenette in each room.
  • You can’t go wrong with Kamana Lakehouse which includes a top-rated restaurant and private hot tubs for guests to enjoy.
  • The Crowne Plaza is affordable luxury located on the banks of Lake Wakatipu. The hotel is a committed member of the IHG Green Engage System which helps hotels track and evaluate their impact on the environment.

Fancy

  • Treating yourself? Why not try Matakauri Lodge with private luxury suites overlooking Lake Wakatipu.
  • Azur Lodge for a spa break.
  • Hulbert House, a boutique hotel in a restored Victorian villa.

Something unusual

  • Glam Camping Queenstown offers a cosy stay in luxury glamping tents and an a la carte breakfast is served every morning.
  • Live like a local at the top-rated Jack’s Point Family Homestay.
  • Have a wilderness retreat with Kinloch’s Ecoscapes and wake up to jaw-dropping mountain views every morning. Fair warning, you might find it hard to leave…

Sustainable hotels are not unusual in New Zealand !

The country has invested a huge amount of time and dedication to sustainable tourism and it’s actually one of the top ecotourism destinations in the world! You can read more about green tourism in this guide.

Best places to eat and drink in Queenstown

Ice bar for Queenstown itinerary. Girl sitting on an ice chair with fluorescent lights.

Chilling in Below Zero

Here are a few of my favourite places:

If you know about Queenstown then you might have already heard of Fergburger . It’s a bit of a legend in these parts, if not the Southern Hemisphere!

Fergburger is famous for its deliciously enormous burgers. People queue around the block every day without fail to get their hands on one and then hang about outside devouring the lot.

The joint is open twenty-one hours in the day and they have a mouthwatering menu of traditional and slightly more adventurous burgers. They also cater for vegetarians and gluten intolerance.

Personally, you can’t go wrong with a Holier Than Thou stuffed with tempura tofu, spicy satay and coconut & coriander sauce. Divine.

Fat Badger

Fat Badger is a pizzeria and bar – the best kind of place, right? They serve a delicious selection of New York-style pizzas and you can choose from a twelve-inch or a twenty-inch.

These pizzas are best shared but if you don’t fancy eating the same one you can swap out half for a different combination of toppings. Fat Badger has a great range of vegetarian and vegan options too.

Cookie Time

If you’ve got a sweet tooth and enjoy novelty, head to Cookie Time. It’s a shop dedicated to all things cookie and you can expect to see a menu bursting with hot cookies, shakes, ice cream, hot chocolate, s’mores and cookie dough.

Just like many resort towns with a ski season, Queenstown has legendary nightlife and there are bars on every corner. Some favourites include Winnie’s, Cowboys and World Bar.

There are two ice bars in Queenstown: Below Zero and Minus 5 . You have to book a timeslot before you arrive as the bars are quite small (they’re made from ice after all!).

You get a cocktail or soft drink served in a glass made of ice, warm coats, boots and gloves included in the price. Everything is made out of ice, including the bar and seating area so it goes without saying that it’s pretty chilly!

What an incredible resort town! I’m not a winter sports person so I’ll just stick to the summer :). The hike up to Queenstown Hill looks incredible!!

It’s really beautiful up there! Haha yeah, I get that, it’s chilly!

We didn’t get to Queenstown on our visit to NZ. However, we hope to return to see it in winter. I’ve saved this post for when we eventually go as there is so much useful information here. We stayed at the Jucy in Auckland and was very impressed with it so would consider the one here too.

Thank you! Queenstown is so fun in winter so I know you’ll love it. I really like that Jucy Snooze allows you to have some space which is not always the case in hostels!

I LOVED Queenstown (I think it might be the prettiest airport in the world when you take off in the middle of the mountains!!) We didn’t have much time there, so we just hiked up Bob’s peak. Next time I would like to spend more time in this area as there are soooo many amazing hikes!

I bet the views from the plane were unreal! It’s definitely worth another visit just for the hikes alone and you’re close to Wanaka which has the legendary Roy’s Peak.

I absolutely loved Queenstown when I visited i 2014. I still regret that I didn’t do the Milford Sound tour!! I did however go ski diving, bungee jumping and on the shotover jet! It is such an amazing city and as you said, can be visited whenever. I went in winter and it was so beautiful with the snow!

Queenstown is so much fun in the snow! It sounds like you did it all too! I was never brave enough to tackle the skydive and the bungee but the jet was so fun!

Excellent work Francesca, this guide is really conclusive. I would pass on the bungy too, but I’d be up for the rest. The hiking sounds really fantastic.

Thank you! The hiking is out of this world for sure!

How to Spend 2 Days in Queenstown: A Local’s Guide

Sharing is caring!

Queenstown is easily one of the best places to visit in New Zealand. Somewhere between the towering mountain peaks, endless number of adventure activities, and the vibrant little town, Queenstown has a way of stealing its visitors’ hearts.

The only problem is, with literally dozens of different things to see and do in Queenstown , it’s hard to know how to plan your valuable time. Planning your Queenstown itinerary can be a little tricky when you’re limited to only two or three days in the area.

For that reason, I’ve written this blog about how to spend 2 days in Queenstown to experience the best of the area. Since most people only have about 48 hours to enjoy Queenstown, this detailed Queenstown itinerary is a great place to start! Plus, in case you’ve got a little extra time, I’ve added on an extra day itinerary for anybody who plans on spending 3 days in Queenstown too!

Where to Stay in Queenstown

There are endless options when it comes to choosing somewhere to stay in Queenstown. In my opinion though, it’s best to choose a centrally located hotel (finding parking in downtown Queenstown can be a nightmare, so walking from your hotel is definitely easiest!)

The Crowne Plaza Queenstown is Queenstown’s best located luxury hotel. With lake views and all of the amenities you’d expect from a 4-star hotel, the Crowne is a top choice for those who don’t mind a little splurge.

If you’re looking for something a little cheaper, Mi-pad smart Hotel is a top choice. This clean and comfortable hotel is one of the best value hotels in Queenstown. Plus, its location is perfect!

Another great option is to rent a holiday home in Queenstown . There are plenty to choose from, spanning all price points and sizes. Just be sure to verify that the owner has a resource consent (local permit) if the neighborhood requires one – it depends on which are of Queenstown they’re located in. I also recommend choosing a place with free parking included.

Use the interactive map to find vacation rentals and hotels in Queenstown

Getting Around Queenstown

Like much of New Zealand, Queenstown is easiest and most beautiful to access with a rental car. If you’ve flown to Queenstown from elsewhere, you’ll probably want to rent a car from the airport to explore the region. Check pricing here.

Driving in Queenstown isn’t difficult but the center of town can be very congested and you may need to search for parking for a few minutes. Be sure that your accommodation includes parking.

Downtown Queenstown is very compact and easy to walk around, especially if you’re staying in the center. There’s are also several local buses and shuttle buses available to explore a little further if you aren’t comfortable renting a car.

Day one of this Queenstown itinerary is all about exploring the great outdoors. Getting outside and taking in that fresh New Zealand air is what Queenstown does best! So, lace up your boots and get ready for a day packed with outdoor adventures!

Hike Queenstown Hill

win a trip to queenstown

Start off your first day in Queenstown early. In fact, if you can manage getting up before the sun, then I highly recommend hiking Queenstown Hill for sunrise. Grab a quick bite to eat before you set off, or better yet, pack some snacks to enjoy on the trail.

Queenstown Hill is one of the most popular hikes in all of Queenstown . Not only are the views from the top incredible, but the hike is easily accessible and suitable for most fitness levels. From the trailhead on Belfast Terrace, the track climbs more than 400 meters (1300 feet) in elevation over 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles each way) to reach the summit. Allow between 2-3 hours to complete the entire trail with enough time for stops along the way.

Note from Melissa: We successfully managed the Queenstown Hill hike with kids, but YMMV. Our 3 year old rode in a toddler carrier and our 6 year old walked it himself, but he was already an accomplished hiker and the steepness was still tough for him. But we made it, and here’s the proof!

win a trip to queenstown

From the top of Queenstown Hill, you’ll have panoramic views of the Southern Alps, Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown, and of course, The Remarkables!

Because of its popularity, Queenstown Hill Track can be quite busy, and getting parking at the trailhead can be challenging (thanks to a super tiny parking lot.) If this is the case, you can walk to the trailhead easily from town center, it just adds an extra few minutes onto your hike. Otherwise, take my advice and hike up for sunrise when you’ll pretty much have the entire trail to yourself!

Lunch at Fergburger

win a trip to queenstown

After a morning of hiking Queenstown Hill, you’re going to be hungry. There is no better place to grab lunch in Queenstown than at the world-famous Fergburger . That’s right, I said it – “world famous” (just ask Ed Sheeran !)

Fergburger is easily the most famed burger joint in all of New Zealand. In fact, did you even visit Queenstown if you didn’t line-up for an hour to try one of their burgers (and take a selfie with it too!) Fergburger is so popular that nearly anytime of the day you’ll find a queue out their door and down the street.

The local secret is to phone in your order to skip the line!

Fergburger has a large burger menu including just classic beef burgers, bison burgers, vegetarian burgers, and even chicken! You can choose between a variety of cheese to add as well as sides such as fries.

Fergburger is open daily from 8 am to 4:30 am and you’ll find it centrally located on Shotover Street. Expect to pay $12+ NZD for a burger.

Note from Melissa: If you love sweets, head around the corner and stop in at Cookie Time . You can grab cookies and milk or even a bespoke ice cream sandwich!

Afternoon Half-day Tour

win a trip to queenstown

You can’t come to Queenstown without joining at least one organized tour. This town is jut crawling with guided tours and experiences that you simply can’t skip out on completely.

There are a few really amazing half-day tours to choose from in Queenstown , but my personal favorite include:

Canyoning in Queenstown is perfect for anybody who loves a bit of adventure (and isn’t scared of the water!) On a canyoning tour, you’ll make your way through a gorgeous canyon by jumping off waterfalls, repelling, floating, swimming, ziplining, and more. It really is an exciting adventure that is one of the best things to do in Queenstown.

A half-day canyoning experience in Queenstown starts at $99 NZD per person.

Whitewater Rafting

Whitewater rafting in Queenstown is a great family-friendly adventure tour. You can choose between a few different rafting experiences, some are more extreme than others. With that said, they all promise a fun half-day activity with really scenic views along the way.

The company called Family Adventures offers a very tame whitewater rafting tour that it suitable for children as young as 3. However, if you’re looking for something more extreme, the other end of the spectrum is going on a rafting trip on the Shotover River with class 3 and 4 rapids!

Skydiving

One of the best ways to take in the views from Queenstown is from the air, and as such, skydiving is easily one of the most popular experiences in Queenstown! From up above, you’ll have a scenic flight before testing how brave you are by jumping out of a plane! Depending on how long you want to free fall, you can choose between a 9,000 ft, 12,000 ft, and 15,000 ft jump.

Skydiving in Queenstown starts at about $300 NZD per person for the shortest jump.

Gibbston Valley

If you’re not an adrenaline junkie, all hope isn’t lost. Touring the Gibbston Valley is a nice half-day scenic tour in one of the most beautiful places – Queenstown’s wine region! The Gibbston Valley is famous for amazing boutique wineries that have produced a range of world-class wines. Pinot Noir is their specialty and on a tour of the area, you’re sure to try a few different bottles!

Although a tour through the Gibbston Valley is typically a wine tour, you can also choose family friendly tours too that include fun stops along the way. The Gibbston Valley Winery is home to New Zealand’s largest wine cave, and the region sits along the Kawarau River and Gorge.

Gibbston Valley tours really range in price depending on the group size, length of tour, and tour inclusions.

Dinner in Town

After enjoying your afternoon get toured around, it’s time to eat again! But instead of grabbing a burger to-go, this time I recommend visiting one of Queenstown’s best restaurants. You’re really spoiled for choice when it comes to dining in Queenstown, but some of my favorite restaurants include:

Italian – Farellis is my favorite Italian restaurant in Queenstown. Located right on Steamer Warf, this boutique restaurant offers lake views and some of the best homemade pasta ever!

Steak – Jervois Steakhouse is a fancy steak restaurant in central Queenstown. It is so popular that you’ll need to ensure you have a reservation to eat here! It’s also a little pricey, but for a fine-dining experience, it can’t be passed up!

Pizza – The Cow is Queenstown’s oldest restaurant established in 1977. This tiny restaurant offers unique décor with exposed wooden beams and a fireplace. It also serves huge delicious pizzas at a reasonable price! The Cow is an excellent choice for families.

Pub food – Smith’s Craft Beer House is the perfect place to go for a typical pub-style meal with a beer. They actually have a huge bar with rotating taps that feature local craft beers from around Queenstown and New Zealand. Also, their burgers and poutine (cheese, chips, and gravy) are seriously delicious.

2 Days in Queenstown – Scenery and Town

Day 2 of this Queenstown itinerary is all about taking in the best views of Queenstown. From out on the lake and up at Bob’s Peak, you’ll have some of the best vantage points possible for appreciating the natural landscapes around Queenstown.

Today, you’ll also have time to enjoy some of Queenstown’s most famed activities as well as hitting the town in the evening for a few drinks!

Lake Cruise and Lunch Farm Experience

win a trip to queenstown

One of the best experiences in Queenstown is getting out on Lake Wakatipu on a scenic lake cruise. A Queenstown lake cruise is the perfect morning activity for any traveler including families or those on a tighter budget!

You can ride the Spirit of Queenstown catamaran for as little as $39 NZD for a 90-minute lake cruise. Or, for something a little more unique, jump on the historic TSS Earnslaw steamship for $79 NZD. Both cruises offer epic views and have ample seating with a snack bar (and fully-licensed bar) on board.

To really round off the experience, I recommend pairing the cruise with a farm tour and lunch too! Both cruises can easily be upgraded to enjoy lunch at one of Queenstown’s most beautifully located farms! At the farms, expect to meet some of the local animals including friendly sheep!

Ride the Gondola and Explore Bob’s Peak

win a trip to queenstown

The gondola in Queenstown takes you 400 meters up above town to Bob’s Peak. The gondola itself is only a 5-minute ride that although very scenic, is only just the start of your afternoon adventures. The gondola ride costs $44 NZD per adult which includes your round-trip ride.

Once at the top of Bob’s Peak, there are a ton of other fun things to do and explore to keep you busy all afternoon.

First of all, ride the Luge. The Luge is a gravity-fed go-kart experience that is fun and exciting for the whole family. Believe me on this one, although it may not look like much, you can get some serious speed! Do yourself a favor and ride the Luge at least twice (once is just never enough!)

There are a couple of other adventure activities you can do at Bob’s Peak too. The Ledge Bungy operates here and although it’s Queenstown’s smallest bungey jump at 47 meters high, it is very scary since it operates over the edge of Bob’s Peak!

For something a little less extreme, consider ziplining! You can choose between a variety of lines to ride, including the world’s steep zipline! Otherwise, paragliding and hang gliding are also popular activities up here too.

If you’re a hiker, head to Ben Lomond Summit. From Bob’s Peak, you’ll need to allow a couple of hours to get to the summit and back. With that said, even just walking the trail for an hour will showcase some really spectacular views.

Dinner at Stratosfare

win a trip to queenstown

After all of the excitement, it isn’t time to head back down to Queenstown quite yet – you’re going to enjoy a gourmet dinner up at Bob’s Peak at the famous Stratosfare Restaurant ! Here, you’ll enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring fancy dishes from all over the world. Expect sushi, meat, cheeses, seafood, and so much more. Oh yah, did I mention the dozens of desserts?!

From the Stratosfare Restaurant, you’ll also have one of the best views of Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu possible. Be sure to book a table in advance to secure your spot. Also, try to book around sunset so you can really enjoy the view and the sky glows hues of orange and pink.

Drinks in Town

If you’re not already tired, after taking the gondola back down to Queenstown it’s time to hit the town for some drinks! Queenstown has a vibrant nightlife and you’ll easily be able to dance the night away at bars such as 1876, World Bar, Cowboys, or even the Bunker.

For something a little more unique, head to one of the ice bars in town! Here, you can have a cocktail or mocktail in a bar made completely of ice! No joke – even your cup will be entirely ice.

3 Days in Queenstown – Day Trip to Glenorchy

If you’re lucky enough to be spending three days in Queenstown, then you’re in for a treat! One of the best ways to spend a day in Queenstown is to actually go on a day trip to the nearby small town of Glenorchy. Glenorchy is home to only about 200 people and sites on the edge of Lake Wakatipu, Mt Aspiring National Park, and Fiordland National Park.

It’s a gorgeous outdoor playground and the perfect place to spend a day.

Scenic Drive to Glenorchy

win a trip to queenstown

The drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy is memorable in itself. This short 40-minute drive can easily turn into hours if you stop at the right places along the way. Hike the historic My Crichton Loop Track, swim at Bob’s Cove, or even explore Moke Lake! Regardless of what you choose to do, you’re sure to have a good time.

Getting to Glenorchy: For today, I recommend driving yourself if possible. You can rent a car in Queenstown for an affordable price. Otherwise, there are plenty of half-day tours can choose from that take you to Glenorchy from Queenstown!

Glenorchy Jetty

win a trip to queenstown

Once in Glenorchy, be sure to visit the famous jetty. Here you can wander the foreshore, feed the ducks, visiting the iconic red “Glenorchy Shed”, or even walk the Glenorchy Walkway.

For even more of a hike, drive out to the Routeburn Track trailhead at Routeburn Shelter and walk to the Falls Hut and back. This makes for a fun day hike on one of New Zealand’s famous Great Walks !

Glenorchy Animal Experience

win a trip to queenstown

The Glenorchy Animal Experience is one of my absolute favorite things to do in Glenorchy ! Here, for only $20 NZD you can wander around a real New Zealand farm meeting the animals. You can choose to also feed the animals on this self-guided tour. If you visit in Spring, be ready to meet the tiniest lambs you’ve ever seen!

There you have it, an ideal way to spend 2 days or 3 days in Queenstown! These itineraries feature some of the absolute best attractions in Queenstown and are sure to keep you busy while having the best time possible.

While skiing and snowboarding are by far the main reasons people visit Queenstown in winter, there are many other winter activities you should add to your Queenstown itinerary, that make QT winter amazing, even if you don’t ski.

After spending three winters in Queenstown, this is my recommended list of things to do in Queenstown during the winter time:

Skiing and snowboarding is what makes Queenstown so popular in winter. There are two ski fields within easy reach from Queenstown, Coronet Peak and The Remarkables, my ski field of choice in New Zealand.

The Remarkables are easily reachable by ski bus but if you’d like more flexibility you should consider renting a car . When you’re at the top of the Calypso chairlift make sure to hike up to the edge, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Queenstown and Wakatipu lake and some off piste bliss on your way down. On the other side of the ski field you can indulge in some jumps at the freestyle park, or take it easy and stop for a drink at the Ice Bar.

Book your ski bus ride

Winter in Queenstown is wild. Every night, after the slopes close, the town comes alive with snow bums rushing to the pubs for a serious apres ski session. Rhino’s Ski Shack takes the crown and here you’ll find all the hard core skiers and snowboarders. If you’re still in your ski gear head over to 1876 for a cheap jug on the terrace. World bar is a fabulous pub with great food, tea pot style cocktails and the perfect ratio of posh and chill. Then dance your night away at Loco, Searle Lane or the Bungalow.

Queenstown is considered to be the adventure capital of New Zealand. The crazy bungy jumps, canyon swings, zip lines, jet boats , race cars and God knows what else bring in more than three million visitors a year.

While getting splashed by cold water on a jet boat ride might not be as enjoyable on a frosty winter morning as it is on a hot summer afternoon, all these blood pumping activities run year round. Fear not, you won’t be missing out on any of these by visiting in winter, you’ll just be able to add a ton of winter activities on top of the usual stuff!

Book your adventure: Canyon Swing Zip Line Shotover jet boat Formula 1 race car

Hop on this legendary steam boat and cruise Lake Wakatipu in style. Admire the snow covered mountains, enjoy the brisk winter breeze and the mist above the lake. The views from the boat are amazing absolutely amazing and you get to experience the scenery froma completely new perspective. There are several different packages for you to choose from and you can extend this trip with a visit to Walter Peak farm, lunch or dinner. If you do the farm tour towards the end of winter you might even get to see baby veals and lambs.

Book your TSS Earnslaw cruise

This might just be my favorite winter activity in Queenstown, sitting in a hot tub and enjoying the view. You’ve probably seen photos of the Onsen pools all over Instagram. These private hot tubs offer gorgeous views over the Shotover Valley and are definitely a bucket list item in Queenstown so make sure to book them well in advance.

While absolutely fabulous and definitely a must try, the Onsen pools are quite pricey and often booked out, but worry not, Millbrook Resort might not be as popular on instagram, but the pools, set in a beautiful garden outside, are just as hot and wonderful. You don’t have to stay at the resort to visit the hot pools, although you will love it if you do, and can purchase a day ticket to the pools, sauna and fitness facilities.

win a trip to queenstown

Another one of those activities that are great year round, but made a little bit more special in winter. As you’ll drive through Fiordland National park you’ll be greeted with snow and Mitre Peak is even more stunning with a white crown. Not to mention that in winter you might just get this little piece of paradise all to yourself, at least for a moment. Wrap up and enjoy Milford Sound !

Since the road conditions can be tricky in winter it might be best to book an organized tour . Don’t worry, it won’t be as crowded as in summer!

Book your Milford Sound tour: Small group tour from Queenstown Coach, cruise & flight tour from Queenstown   Small boat cruise Cruise and kayak tour

Ok, ok you’re right, you can drive to Glenorchy any time of the year. But this drive is even more beautiful in winter, when the mountains are covered in snow and theres a moody layer of mist above the lake. Trust me, you’ll find it hard to keep your eyes on the road!

Lord of the Rings was filmed entirely in New Zealand and you can find a lot of the LOTR filming locations around Queenstown. Just outside town you’ll find Amon Hen, Ithilien Camp, Isengard, Lothlórien, the lands of Rohan and more iconic locations of the Middle Earths.

If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan we recommend you book guided a LOTR tour and a guide will take you to the best viewpoints and provide plenty of context and backstage stories for the ultimate experience.

Book your Middle Earth tour: Half-day LOTR tour Full day LOTR tour

Harry’s is a bit of a legend around Queenstown and a great place to spend the evenings on a winter night. The fire place will keep you warm, the pizzas fed and the beer might just help your aim! This place is popular among locals and tourists alike. Put your coins on the table to signal you’re booking the table and keep them there so others know how many more games you’re playing.

You’ve probably heard of the buffet dinner up the Skyline, and yes the views are amazing, the food is alright but the atmosphere… not very authentic. Plus it costs an eye and an arm. Now, if you do have the time and budgets, sure go ahead and splurge, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. But I very much prefer the Bazaar, and not just because the tour starts with desert. The menu here changes often to introduce new cuisines and dishes from around the world, the food is fresh and delicious and the views over the lake with the Remarkables in the back are breath taking. Check out First table, you might be able to get this gourmet indulgence for a fraction of the price.

The elusive kiwi bird is a flightless bird and a national symbol of New Zealand, but since these are nocturnal animals and they’re endangered they’re quite hard to spot in the wildlife. But lucky for you, at the Kiwi Birdlife Park in Queenstown you can observe the flightless kiwis in a nocturnal enclosure that mimics their natural environment. The park is a wildlife refuge and a conservation program that helps heal injured birds and manages breeding programs for endangered species. Here you’ll be able to spot over 20 types of native bird species, including the kiwi bird, as well as other animals such as geckos and tuataras.

Book your entrance ticket to the Kiwi Birdlife Park

There’s just something special about night skiing, something you don’t get to experience when hitting the slopes in broad daylight. On Wednesday, Friday and Saturday Coronet Peak lights up, the massive flood lights illuminating the slopes. Head up a little bit early to enjoy the sunset and make sure to stay late to grab a few drinks and enjoy the beats at the Elevate party.

Queenstown is located in Otago, a region known for the best Pinot Noir and all around town you’ll find fabulous wine estates producing some of the best wines in New Zealand. Each winery unique and every wine delicious. In summer I’d suggest you op on a bike and hit the wine trail, but in winter you’re better off joining a wine tasting tour, the kind that comes with a sober driver and a heated van.

Book your wine tasting tour

Don’t feel like sharing the slopes and waiting in line for the chair lift? Then heli skiing is for you! Hop on a helicopter, land on a mountain peak and carve your own lines down the powdery slopes for the ultimate New Zealand winter experience! This fun adventure is no joke though, you’ll need to be a pretty good skier or snowboarder and be in decent shape.

Sky diving in Queenstown is breathtaking any time of the year, but it’s hard to beat the views you get from the sky in winter. It truly is one of the better New Zealand skydives!

You’ll get snow covered mountains all around and the glimmering blue lake below them as you jump out of a plane and freefall from the sky. Wrap up well and scream out loud, enjoy!

Grab your rental vehicle , add some snow snow chains to the mix and hit the road. This steep and windy road will take you over the beautiful Crown Range, past Cardrona and Snow Farm, all the way to Wanaka. There will be no shortage of beautiful vistas and photo spots. The road is well maintained and plowed regularly but ccheck the forecast and road conditions before heading off. If the conditions change while you’re in Wanaka you can always return via Cromwell.

Snow farm is located in the Pisa Conservation Area just off of the Crown Range road. Here you’ll find kilometres upon kilometres of Cross country tracks, a small network of backcountry huts and the Snow Fun zone for sledding and tubing. Exploring this winter wonderland in the Pisa Range

What do you do when you have countless kilometres of snowy clearings and an abundance of wind? You go snow kiting, obviously! There are countless locations around Queenstown where you can take your kite up, but if you’re a beginner or just wanting to learn we recommend Snow Farm.

Just opposite Earnslaw park, Fear Factory takes haunted house to the next level. Wait till it’s dark outside then grab your buddies and put your big boy (or girl) pants on and get ready to scream. The awesome actors at the Fear Factory will disguise as mummies, zombies, creepy clowns and all sorts of zombies and tug at you, appear and disappear and have you walking on your toes as you make your way though the dark and creepy corridors.

Book your Fear Factory tickets

Cardrona is located about half way between Queenstown and Wanaka and offers modern facilities, wide ski fields and it might just be the best ski resort in the area. The drive is a little bit longer than getting to the Remarkables or Coronet Peak but totally worth it. And the best part? The legendary apres ski at the Cardrona hotel! Make sure to stop for a drink and a bite on your way back.

Ice Hockey is big in Queenstown and watching the Southern Stampede (the Queenston team) win at the local ice area is quite an experience. Put on something yellow and something blue and get ready to cheer.

This might just be the thing I miss most about living in Queenstown. Friday after work, meet Lexa and Kurt at Atlas, order a medium rare steak, extra gravy and truly enjoy that pint of Altitude’s Mischievous Kea, or some other amazing IPA on the guest tap. It was my end of the week ritual, but you can do it any (every?) day of the week. With 22 taps and a trippy toilet behind the fridge door, this tiny bar is bound to become your favorite too.

Here’s the thing about winter, the days are short, the temperatures are low and you just wanna spend more time inside than you would in Spring or summer. So why not escape to the movies? In Arrowtown you’ll find the cutest and quirkiest boutique cinema with miss-matched armchairs and pink chiffon curtains screening both contemporary and arthouse films and serving amazing cheese boards and wine at your seat.

Every Wednesday night from 6.30pm onwards, Fork & Tap Arrowtown puts on quite the event. Somewhere between a concert and a jam session, these Wednesday nights are a lot of fun. If you’re a musician you can join the local crew for a few songs, otherwise slowly work your way through the countless craft beers on tap, grab a bite and just have fun.

If you walked through the Queenstown gardens you might have noticed these funny looking cage like bins on a pole. That’s your target when playing frisbee golf (disc golf). The rules are similar to golf but instead of a ball and a club, you play it by throwing a frisbee. The course is fr ee to use and you can rent the frisbee at most hostels and sports stores around town and head off to the gardens for an afternoon on fun.

There is no shortage of hikes, walks and trails around Queenstown and most of them are fabulous also in winter. For a short walk and a snowball fight go up to Queenstown hill. This hike is short and easy and offers breathtaking views over Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu. If you want something more, head up Ben Lomond for a full day hike. The views are even better, the snow much deeper and the hike is worth every drop of your sweat.

Looking for an unforgettable alpine adventure in Queenstown? Then you must try snowshoeing on the Remarkables! You’ll be led by a guide and hike through stunning areas like Jagged Edge Ridge, get off the beaten track and explore the beauty of the winter wonderland and take in some seriously incredible views.

The Winter Festival in Queenstown has a long standing tradition and dates back to 1975. Today the Queenstown Winter Fest is a 10 day long event packed with competitions, championships, shows, concerts and all sorts of fun events. The festivities are deliberately fun and unusual, like the Dog Derby, Rope tug on skis and the winter plunge in the cold cold lake. Then, at night it turns into a party.

Now this one goes against all health and safety regulations in New Zealand, and we all know how seriously kiwis take H&S (or at least the massive fines associated with it). But if you want to be a bit of a rebel and you don’t mind getting kicked out of a bar (or 5) this is a fun game I used to play with my friends. What can I say, Queenstown winter tends to get long when you live there …

win a trip to queenstown

Hop on the steepest cable car in the Southern Hemisphere to the top of Bob’s Peak, enjoy the views and then have some fun at the Skyline Luge. A race down the hill that’s sure great for kids and adults alike. In winter you can even opt for the night Luge when the course lights up in bright colours.

Imagine waves of pink and green lights dancing and flickering above the horizon. These, my friend are the Aurora Australis, a natural wonder caused by cosmic rays and solar winds interacting with the earth’s atmosphere only visible in the Southern Hemisphere. To catch the best view, head outside of Queenstown’s city lights to areas free from light pollution.

Queenstown with QT hill in the background

There are many events and celebrations all throughout winter in Queenstown and they can provide a truly unique experience. But these events can also impact the opening hours of shops, attractions, bars, and restaurants. Availability of accommodation and tours, as well as prices, might also be affected.

Below is a list of the most prominent dates you should be paying attention to when planning your winter trip to Queenstown.

King’s Birthday – 5 June

Matariki Day (Maori New Year) – June or July, date varies

School Holidays – Usually 2 weeks in early July, greatly impacts the crowds especially on ski fields.

LUMA Southern Light Project is a stunning light festival held in the iconic Queenstown Gardens at the start of June. The festival is free of charge and the gardens filled with art installations and transform into an illuminated wonderland. There are also delicious food trucks and pop-up bars scattered throughout the gardens.

Queenstown Winter Festival is the largest and most famous winter celebration in the region, this festival is packed with exciting gigs, events, competitions, mulled wine, and firework displays. The dates shift slightly each year but it generally falls in mid-June.

Winter Pride sees Queenstown celebrating the LGBTTQI+ community and offers a diverse range of free entertainment with great music and rainbow flags flying high. It usually falls towards the end of August to celebrate love, diversity, and equality.

The Peak to Peak is New Zealand’s longest-running winter multi-sport race between The Remarkables and Coronet Peak that is usually held in early September. It includes skiing or snowboarding down the mountain, bike down to Frankton Beach, kayak to Queenstown, run through central Queenstown, and finally bike from Arthur’s Point to Coronet Peak.

Snow Machine is an epic music festival that brings together an amazing lineup of musicians, spread across three stages at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, and Queenstown town centre. This multi-day extravaganza of music, adventure, and fun is generally held in September.

Queenstown winter temperature and weather

Winter in New Zealand starts at the end of June and lasts till the end of September, making July, August and September the official winter months in Queenstown.

The winter temperatures in Queenstown are generally between 0 and 8 degrees Celsius. At night it can go just slightly below freezing level and on a sunny and wind-still day it can be very pleasant.

Queenstown rarely gets snow in town and when it does, the sow doesn’t last long.

Queenstown is great year round. In summer you get to enjoy the lake and beautiful weather while in winter you can do winter sports. Most of the summer activities are possible year round, also in winter.

Make sure to pack some good quality waterproof boots, warm socks, a (preferably long) winter coat, a compact umbrella, gloves, scarf and hat, warm layers, but also your beach towel and swimwear to enjoy the hot pools. If you’d like to hit the slopes you’ll obviously also need your snow gear.

Queenstown from bob peak skyline

There is an international airport in Queenstown and most people will fly in here. Landing in Queenstown is a treat of its own so make sure to secure a window seat as the views over Dart Valley, Wakatipu Lake and Aspiring National Park will make your jaw drop.

To get into town, book this airport shuttle to your accommodation. Or better yet, hire a rental car so you’ll have more flexibility and you’ll be able to do some of the day trips and scenic drives in the area.

Queenstown city center is fairly small and mostly closed to traffic so walking is your best bet. Most tours and activities will pick you up in town or at your accommodation so you can get by without a car if you’re staying central.

If you want to explore Wanaka, Glenorchy, Arrowtown or the wider surroundings then renting a car is your best bet. You’ll also need wheels if you’re staying in Fernhill, Frankton or further out of town.

Often I struggle to suggest enough good restaurant options but with Queenstown I’m struggling to narrow it down to just a few. The culinary options in Queenstown are plentiful, diverse and so incredibly good! These are some of my favorites (but there are so many more great restaurants!)

Botswana Butchery – For all you meat lovers, Botswana Butchery is a must! Choose from a selection of fine cuts with the perfect marble score and enjoy the impeccable service.

Bazaar – a marketplace foodie experience with no menu. The journey through the food market starts with desert and ends with the best views over Wakatipu lake and the Remarkables. An experience not to be missed.

Tanoshi Cow Lane – One of the best Japanese restaurants I’ve ever been to. The sashimi here is something else.

Atlas Cafe – My go-to place for Friday after work beer and steak. I’ve lost count of the hours spent in this little hole in the wall. And if you can’t find the loo, try the fridge door.

The World Bar & Restaurant – Taking pub food to a whole new level and home to teapot cocktails. The World Bar is also a fun place for a few drinks at night.

Taco Medic – Best option for a quick bite on the go. But there is nothing quick about the way the meat was cooked! Braised for 6-12 hours, these tacos will melt in your mouth!

Vudu Cafe – My favorite brunch spot. Try the eggs benny or pancakes and drink all the coffee you can.

The best time to visit Queenstown is in late spring or summer when the days are longer, the weather is warm and the outdoors can become your playground.

Queenstown is also great in winter, especially if you’d like to ski or snowboard in New Zealand.

But in all honesty, any time is a good time to visit Queenstown! This town is lively and filled with amazing things to do no matter the season. Just keep in mind that the peak of summer and peak of winter can get quite busy and pricey.

As many as you can! I came to Queenstown for a couple of days but ended up staying for several years. And I’m not the only one who did so.

Three days is the minimum you’ll need to experience Queenstown and its immediate surroundings. Queenstown is also a great hub to explore the lower part of the South Island and five days or more will allow you to do some day trips and explore the wider area.

If you’re visiting QT for the winter sports then a week is pretty standard, but if you love the slopes you might want to stay longer.

Queenstown is a treat to visit and here is so much to do and see here! I’m sure you’ll love this little corner of New Zealand, just as you will love the rest of the country.

To help you plan your NZ trip I’ve prepared a series of  New Zealand travel guides  and you can find out more about the Coromandel Peninsula in the articles below.

Good travel insurance is an absolute must when traveling abroad, and I’ve learned that the hard way!

Now I always get insured before leaving and  Travel Insurance  Masters is my go-to platform to find the best insurance options for a specific trip.

The TIM platform works as a search engine and suggests the best insurance company and insurance plan for your criteria. This way you don’t end up paying more for things you don’t need! It also takes into account your age, nationality, destination etc. which can greatly impact the final price.

Fabulous list. You remind me just how much I miss the South Island, and it actually hasn’t been that long since I was there. Some new ideas too, like a steak at Atlas, that will go on our list for next time.

Great post! Sadly, New Zealand is such a long trip from Europe, I wonder if I will ever make it there, getting only 2 weeks of leave in one go. Love the photographs and the activities

Wow it looks like there are a lot of fantastic things to do here during the wintertime! I don’t know much about the area so this was really interesting to read!

Queenstown is a small vacation town on the banks of Lake Wakatipu. For this reason, I would like to introduce you to two popular areas in town and help you choose your ideal spot on your vacation in Queenstown.

9:00AM – Coronet Peak

Coronet Peak

Approximately 10 miles north of downtown Queenstown lies the picturesque ski and snowboard destination of Coronet Peak. Open during the winter months, this ski area features 32 slopes, two terrain parks, a tubing park and a ski school!

The slopes are geared to skiers and snowboarders of all levels, so beginners, intermediates and advanced visitors will all feel right at home. While the ski slopes are closed from October to May, visitors will still be able to drive to the top and take in the beautiful surroundings in summer.

To get to Coronet Peak, you can take a Snowline Express shuttle departing from central Queenstown’s Snow Centre.

  • Cost: Lift passes from $69 USD
  • Getting there: Shuttles leave between 8 and 11:30 am, return shuttles start at 1:30 pm, and cost around $13 USD.
  • How long should I spend there: at least 2-3 hours to enjoy some good skiing.

1:00PM – Lake Wakatipu

Lake Wakatipu

Lake Wakatipu is NZ’s third-largest lake. The lake bed sits below sea level, reaching a maximum depth of 1,243 ft! Legend has it that the lake’s shape is the burned outline of an evil giant that was burned sleeping with his feet drawn up.

The lake can be experienced in any number of ways. By boat, it can either be a leisurely steamboat ride or an exhilarating jet boat ride! Take in the marine life below deck in the underwater observatory or enjoy a paddle in a kayak.

The water is icy cold, so even on scorchingly hot days, you may not want to spend too long in the water! But if you fancy some sun, head down to Marine Parade to find the closest thing to a beach in Queenstown.

  • Getting there: Drive for 15 minutes on Glenorchy-Queenstown Rd.
  • How long should I spend there: Around 30 minutes should be enough to see the lake, unless you want to do water sports.

1:30PM – Botanic Queenstown Gardens

Queenstown Botanic Gardens

Queenstown Gardens is a perfect city escape on any Queenstown itinerary. This pretty park is found a small piece of land that sticks out into Lake Wakatipu.

There are a number of activities and landmarks inside the park, surrounded by beautiful landscapes and natural vegetation. In addition to some large exotic trees and a rose garden, the gardens feature an 18-‘hole’ disc golf course, an ice-skating rink, skate park, lawn-bowls club and tennis courts.

A gentle stroll around the peninsula and gardens takes about half an hour. Out near the point, there’s a memorial to Captain Robert Scott (1868–1912), leader of the doomed South Pole expedition, which includes an engraving of his moving final message.

  • Getting there: it’s in the centre of Queenstown
  • How long should I spend there: About an hour should be enough time

2:30PM – Kiwi Birdlife Park

Kiwi Birdlife Park

If seeing the cute and mysterious kiwi bird is on your Queenstown itinerary bucket-list, then this is your best chance to do so! This family-friendly attraction is Queenstown’s premier destination for animal-spotting.

The Kiwi Birdlife Park is home to 10,000 native plants and birds! Inside, you’ll find over 30 species of animals, including tuataras and scores of birds like brown kiwis, black stilts, falcons and rainbow lorikeets.

One of the highlights has to be the darkened kiwi houses that are home to the national bird of New Zealand!

Insider tip:  Try and catch the kiwi feeding show that happens five times daily!

  • Cost: $35 USD
  • Getting there: it’s a 10 minute walk from the last stop.

3:30PM – Skyline Queenstown

Skyline Queenstown

Located right next to Kiwi Birdlife Park is Skyline Queenstown, where you can take a gondola to the top of Bob’s Peak! The gondola takes you through pine forest and up to almost 1,400 ft above sea level. Once at the top you’ll be treated to panoramic views that will take your breath away!

There is a cafe and restaurant to grab a bite to eat at or enjoy a hot beverage when it’s chilly outside, a souvenir shop and an observation deck that you may not want to leave! For more exciting thrills there are also a number of activities you can take part in to get your adrenaline flowing.

There is an exhilarating downhill luge course, bungy jumping, zipline courses and a mountain bike track. Of course, if you just prefer to walk around, there are many good hiking routes too!

Insider tip:  You can take the Tiki Trail to hike to the top, instead of taking the gondola. The hike takes around an hour for someone of average fitness level!

  • Cost: $28 USD
  • Getting there: It’s right next to the last stop.
  • How long should I spend there: Around 20 minutes to enjoy the view and take photos.

5:00PM – Onsen Hot Pools

After a long day of adventure visiting Queenstown attractions a good soaking in a hot tub will be just what the doctor ordered! For some relaxation with a view, make sure to add the Onsen Hot Pools to your Queenstown itinerary!

The soothing effects of the Onsen Hot Pools are just as good in summer as they are in winter. Onsen boasts several idyllic, cedar-lined hot pools overlooking the Shotover River, and massage rooms that provide an overall boutique day-spa experience, second to none!

While the daytime views are gorgeous, a nighttime soak when the stars light up the sky is an unforgettable experience! It is also a great place to experience a Queenstown sunset.

Insider tip:  A free shuttle service from the corner of Camp and Shotover Street can be requested when booking!

  • Cost: From $41 USD
  • Getting there: it’s a 10 minute drive from the last stop along Gorge Rd
  • How long should I spend there: as long as you wish! Though after an hour your skin starts to wrinkle like a dried prune.

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

The second day of our Queensland trip itinerary explores a little further beyond the city limits, but is guaranteed to knock your socks off! There is adventure, history and adrenaline-fuelled fun all in one.

9:00AM – The Remarkables

The Remarkables

The huge mountain range you can see to the east of Queenstown is called The Remarkables. It’s a mountain summit with ski slopes and winter activities that lives up to its name!

A long, twisting road climbs up the mountains just outside of town and leads to an excellent ski resort! The drive is one of the most scenic drives you can take in Otago and can take up to an hour if you stop to take in the vistas.

In addition to the ski slopes that are great fun in winter, there is also a great little hike to Lake Alta that you can do in summer. It takes about 90 minutes there and back, and the trail is a lot quieter than Ben Lomond.

If skiing isn’t your preferred choice of activity, I highly recommend taking a scenic flight over the glaciers, fiordland national park and snow top peaks of The Remarkables by helicopter. It will be an experience you’ll never forget!

  • Cost: From $13 USD
  • Getting there: If you don’t have a car, you can catch the Snowline Express shuttle to The Remarkables from 8 – 11:30 am daily, and back from 1:30 pm, during the ski season
  • How long should I spend there: At least 2-3 hours to enjoy some skiing.

1:30PM – Queenstown Hill

Queenstown Hill

Queenstown Hill, or Te Tapu-nui (mountain of intense sacredness) in the native Maori language, is a small hill overlooking the city. It is particularly popular for its Time Walk trail, one of the best free things to do in Queenstown !

The mile-long trail takes between 2-3 hours to complete. The walk was designed to showcase the past, present and future of Queenstown. As you make your way along the track, you’ll come across the popular ‘Basket of Dreams’ sculpture as well as six information plates that inform you about the different epochs of Lake Wakatipu and Queenstown.

The reward when reaching the summit is fantastic 360-degree views of the area, including Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables, Cecil Peak and Karawau River!

If you would like to stop for a snack before descending, you might enjoy a little picnic on the shore of the small mountain lake.

Insider tip:  Take some snacks and stop for a scenic picnic beside the small mountain lake, before descending down again!

  • Getting there: it’s a 30 minute drive along Remarkables Ski Field Access Rd
  • How long should I spend there: Around 30 minutes to see the views.

2:00PM – Lake Hayes

Lake Hayes is also known as the mirror lake, for the beautiful reflections that can be seen witnessed early in the morning. For this reason, it is one of New Zealand’s most photographed lakes. Of all the pictures you take during your 2 days in Queenstown, a picture of Hayes Lake is very likely to make your friends back home the most jealous!

Around the lake, there are plenty of tables and chairs, and large grassed areas available for picnics and recreational activities. There is also an 8km loop around the whole lake to enjoy the tranquil setting from all angles.

  • Getting there: it’s a 12 minute drive along State Hwy 6
  • How long should I spend there: Around 1 hour to see the views and have a picnic.

3:00PM – Arrowtown

Arrowtown

A short 20-minute drive from Queenstown is the former gold-mining settlement of Arrowtown. This historic gold mining town is a charming and quirky town located on the banks of the Arrow River, is surrounded by beautiful mountains and is known for its breath-taking fall colors!

The main street is lined with well-preserved buildings from the late 19th century. Much of the place has an interesting story to tell, and is well worth a stop when touring Queenstown!

In addition to historical tales and loads of old-time character, the town also has pleasant walking trails, technical mountain biking routes, gorgeous picnic spots and quaint streets.

  • Getting there: It’s a 10-minute drive along Arrowtown-Lake Hayes Rd.
  • How long should I spend there: Around 2 hours should be enough time.

5:00PM – Gibbston Valley Winery

Gibbston Valley Winery

For a touch of class on your Queenstown itinerary, make a stop at one of the region’s finest wine farms! Gibbston Valley is the Central Otago Wine Region’s oldest commercial winery, and one of the closest to Queenstown. Established in the early 1980s, its vineyards are perched up the rugged schist mountains near Kawarau Gorge.

The high altitudes and diversified climatic conditions combine perfectly for the production of Pinot Noir, which Gibbston Valley achieves with great success! The winery is home to New Zealand’s largest wine cave and is well worth a look around.

For a chill day out, grab a few tastings and enjoy their wines and a cheese board in a pleasant setting. The winery also has mountain bikes that can be hired for the day and two fantastic cycling trails running through the property.

Insider tip:  To ensure your whole group can enjoy themselves, take advantage of the shuttle service to and from Gibbston Valley!

Jet boats are fast and agile vessels that are capable of skimming over the water at breakneck speeds and can turn on a dime. While there are lots of other jet boat rides around Queenstown, the Shotover is by far the best and most iconic! A jet boat ride will leave you breathless after all the screaming and laughing you’ll be doing.

The drivers are super skilled, and comfortably take the jet boats through their paces, charging through the narrow canyon it feels like you are so close to the rocks you could reach out and touch them! For adrenaline junkies, this is the best way to end off 2 days in Queenstown.

Queenstown Mall

  • Shop to your heart’s content along Queenstown’s leafy high street
  • You can find all the designer labels, small boutiques and sports gear you need
  • There are also plenty of restaurants and cafes where you can recharge for your next round of shopping

Queenstown is home to a great variety of fashion boutiques, retail outlets and shopping centers. This cosmopolitan New Zealand resort town has become a shopper’s paradise of late, and has plenty to offer shopaholics and budget-conscious buyers alike!

It’s pretty common to find central shopping locations, or high streets, in New Zealand towns and cities. In New Zealand clusters of retail outlets lining the street are referred to by locals as malls.

Queenstown’s Mall Street is no different, and a walk along the paved walkways will uncover a pleasant showcase of designer boutiques, restaurants, souvenir shops, and international clothing labels. Big brands found on The Mall include yoga giant Lululemon Athletica, Australian retailers Country Road and Witchery, and local lingerie brand, Bendon.

With Queenstown being very compact and walkable, finding another shopping complex is never far away! Once you’re done browsing The Mall and still want more then head to O’Connells Shopping Centre.

O’Connells is found inside a multi-story building, right at the heart of Queenstown. Here you’ll find the iconic sportswear label Canterbury of New Zealand, and the more budget-friendly snow/street fashion outlet Alta.

Peregrine Wines

Peregrine Wines

  • A wine farm with a beautiful setting and award-winning wines
  • Save some time for a pleasant wine tasting experience at their cellar door
  • Admire the architecture as you take a short break from all the adventurous activities on your Queenstown itinerary

Queenstown is a city surrounded by intimate wineries and beautiful vineyards. The area’s microclimate makes it perfect for cultivating a variety of grapes, but it is undoubtedly best known for its Pinot Noir.

A winery visit is a must-do when spending 2 days in Queenstown!

Located in the Gibbston Valley, Peregrine Wine Farm has a beautiful setting with rugged mountains providing a striking background. Peregrine prides itself on growing premium Pinot Noir and white varieties on the estate while using sustainable methods that are kind on the environment. The winery is also actively committed to the conservation of New Zealand’s native bird species.

It’s not just the wine that is stunning here, but the architecture too. The modern tasting room with its roof that resembles a rising wing has also been adorned with an accolade or two. Peregrine’s architecture, wines and hospitality will leave a lasting impression on your 3 days in Queenstown.

The cellar door is open daily from 10 am – 5 pm for wine tasting experiences.

The Lakes District Museum

  • This museum tells the story of early inhabitants and historical events in the region
  • The displays are very interesting and provide great insight into the town’s past
  • Browse the book shop or admire the artworks to round off your museum experience

The Lakes District Museum is appropriately located in the old mining town of Arrowtown. It is surprisingly extensive and is set around three historical buildings, one of which used to be the town’s original bank.

The museum tells the story of early Maori tradition, the arrival of the European settlers and the gold rush era during the 19th century. Historic scenes and structures are accurately recreated, including a grog shanty, blacksmith workshop and a Victorian schoolhouse. There are many exhibits and displays that are interactive and informative, which appeal to both young and old.

There is also an art gallery attached to the museum that showcases old and modern art. Visitors interested in more in-depth stories from the area’s past will find loads of books on offer in the book shop.

A visit to the museum will definitely spark intrigue, so it’s quite handy that the Arrowtown information desk can be found there too. Don’t be shy to ask for tips for exploring the rest of the town or surrounding areas. You can even hire a pan and try your hand at finding gold flakes in the Arrow River!

The museum is open daily from 8:30 am – 5:00 pm.

The best time to visit Queenstown entirely depends on the reason for your visit.

Weather-wise, the best time to visit would be between December and February when the good weather promotes loads of outdoor activities. If you’re headed over to take advantage of fresh powder on the ski slopes, then a Queenstown trip would be best suited for June or July.

These two reasons – summer weather and the ski season – mean that there are two distinct high seasons in Queenstown.

If you’re looking for adventure and to escape the Northern Hemisphere winter, it’s one of the best places to visit in December for sure.

when to visit queenstown

Spring is known to be the cheapest time of the year for Queenstown travel, as there are many outdoor activities to get busy with but without the peak crowds. Autumn brings the most unpredictable weather in Queenstown, with fluctuating temperatures and the high chance of rain. For this reason, it is best to choose a different time of year to see the city.

Check out the helpful guide below to decide for yourself when to visit Queenstown!

Getting around Queenstown is super easy, as there is a wealth of public transport options available here – depending on your destination, you’ll have your choice of public buses, taxis, shuttles, ferries and water taxies for your next ride.

However, as most of the attractions are outside the city center, I recommend hiring a car and driving, especially as you will need to drive up mountains and hills.

The center of Queenstown is a very walkable city, so if you are staying fairly central then most of the time you may not even opt for motorized transport at all! The most affordable mode of transport is the public buses, which also happens to have the most extensive coverage of Queenstown.

If you plan on staying a while or are predominantly going to take the bus to most of the stops on your Queenstown itinerary, then I suggest investing in a GoCard for public transit. The GoCard reduces every trip to just over $1 USD!

win a trip to queenstown

Taking a taxi in Queenstown is a good option when the bus services are no longer running, or if your destination is far from the bus route. Water taxis offer a more direct route across Lake Wakatipu from Steamer Wharf, with multiple jetties dotted around the lake.

Queenstown is a hub for adventure sports, and shuttles to and from some hard-to-reach hiking trails are available. To ensure you get the shuttle you require, it‘s advised to book in advance.

Overall, Queenstown is a safe city with very few things to worry about. However, it is still a good idea to take precautions to ensure your personal safety as many of the people in town are visitors too.

If you have a car, the one thing you may need to watch out for are car break-ins. Wherever you’re parked, it is advisable to lock your doors and don’t leave anything of value within eyeshot.

New Zealand is one of the safest countries for solo travelers, but women should still take the usual precautions for safety both in the city or out in the countryside.

When preparing for a great adventure outdoors it’s advisable to tell someone where you’ll be and what time you expect to be back. Take enough food supplies and pack emergency clothing for adverse weather conditions.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

Sometimes you think you just won’t need it… But if and when you do need it, travel insurance can really be a lifesaver.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

The Ultimate Queenstown

Road trip guide.

Queenstown, nestled in the heart of the Southern Alps in New Zealand's South Island, is a breathtakingly beautiful and adventure-filled destination. Queenstown has something for everyone from its stunning landscapes to its adrenaline-pumping activities.

Queenstown is also committed to preserving its natural environment, and many operators offer eco-friendly tours and activities. As people's curiosity about low-impact travel grows, it's amazing to see a wide range of experiences that allow you to enjoy the natural beauty of this stunning part of New Zealand, while also being mindful of your impact on the environment.

In our opinion, the best low-impact way to travel is by electric vehicle. There are multiple Chargenet stations (in the most scenic locations might we add) in and around Queenstown, making it easy to recharge along the way. You can also take advantage of overnight charging by booking accommodation with EV charging facilities, this way you can park the car when you’re done for the day and power it up overnight.

To save you time researching, we’ve put together a guide with all the best things to do in Queenstown, so you can make the most out of your trip!

The road from Queenstown to Glenorchy.

Best time to visit:

Queenstown is most definitely a year-round destination, each season offering a unique experience. Summer (December to February) provides nice warm temperatures for outdoor activities and maybe even a summer dip, while autumn (March to May) showcases the most incredible color scheme as all the trees throughout the town turn a vibrant orange and red hue. Winter (June to August) is the perfect time for skiing and snowboarding, while spring (September to November) is a beautiful time to visit all the surrounding wineries as they come to life.

Getting there:

Queenstown is well-connected by air, with regular flights from major cities in New Zealand and Australia and it has got to be one of the most scenic airports in the world! Honestly, flying into this stunning alpine town is an experience in itself as you take in the surrounding mountain views.

If you’re opting for an EV for the trip, head to the Sixt depot inside the airport and grab your choice of adventure mobile. We can't go past the trusty Polestar 2. They’ll come all charged on pick-up so it’s basically like enjoying free petrol - which is always a win for the environment and your pockets!

Where to stay:

There are accommodation options to suit every budget and preference in Queenstown. The town centre offers a range of amazing hotels, motels, and hostels within walking distance of popular attractions. For a little bit of luxury close to town we recommend staying in the Scenic Suites - the views are absolute magic. Camping grounds are also a great option for budget travellers, and there are actually a few in Queenstown that also offer EV charging, including Creeksyde Queenstown Holiday Park & Driftaway Queenstown . Driftaway Queenstown also offers a lovely hot tub experience which is the perfect way to end a day of adventures.

Best things to do:

One of the best ways to explore Queenstown and appreciate its stunning landscapes is by taking advantage of the various walking and hiking trails. If you're looking for a pleasant and easy walk, consider the Lake Hayes Walkway, Bobs Cove Lookout and the Moke Lake Loop Track. These paths are situated along the lakes edge, offering a beautiful 2-3 hour scenic route.

Be sure to download the Roady App for all the detailed information you’d need for all these amazing spots we’re mentioning.

For those seeking a slightly more challenging experience, the Queenstown Hill Walk leads to a viewpoint that overlooks the city. Here, you'll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of The Remarkables, Cecil Peak, Lake Wakatipu, and sections of the Kawarau River. Another few excellent options that require a bit of an ascent but reward you with stunning views is Tobin's Track in Arrowtown, the Wye Creek track and Lake Alta walk tucked away in The Remarkables.

Lake Hayes Walkway.

The views just from the edges of Lake Wakatipu are absolutely stunning. You could easily spend a day relaxing at the beach and eating at one of the many great lunch spots in the town centre. The iconic burgers from Fergburger are definitely well worth a try. You can even take them onto Perky’s Floating Bar (if you purchase a drink) and enjoy them while taking in the epic mountain scenes. Otherwise, jump on the TSS Earnslaw, which has been running since 1912, and enjoy your lunch out on the lake.

For the adrenaline junkies or those keen on a little more adventure you’ve got the Shotover Jet, Bungee Jumping & world-class ski fields nearby. Hit the slopes up Coronet Peak or The Remarkables and experience the thrill of skiing or snowboarding. These resorts offer runs suitable for beginners, intermediates, and advanced skiers, ensuring there's something for everyone. Don’t forget to pack chains for your car and if you’re in an electric vehicle, we can promise that they handle the snow and cold like pros!

Snowboarding up the Remarkables.

Another highly recommended activity in Queenstown is embarking on a zip lining adventure with Ziptrek Ecotours. The experience involves soaring through the beautiful forest, where you can appreciate the scenery that surrounds you. Their guided tours not only offer valuable insights into the natural habitat but also shed light on their commendable sustainability endeavors. In fact, they have diligently planted more than 6000 trees to bolster the ecosystems in which they operate. Unquestionably, this activity guarantees heaps of enjoyment while promoting an environmentally friendly approach.

Glenorchy is a beautiful small town located about 45 minutes away from Queenstown on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. A day trip to this stunning location really is a must-do. The drive is just as beautiful as the destination itself and is up there as one of the most scenic roads in all of New Zealand.

There are a few spots worth stopping in on the way, including the Bennetts Bluff Lookout and Wilson’s Bay.

You may as well pop your EV on charge at the Glenorchy charging station while you wander around the town. This might just be the most scenic place to charge in the country - the mountain backdrop is pretty tough to beat. If you haven’t already, it’s worth setting up an account on the ChargeNet app as you’ll then have access to the network of over 300 charge points nationwide. Plus, when you’re on the road, you can see which chargers are currently in use.

Charging in Glenorchy.

Your first stop has to be the iconic Glenorchy Wharf & famous red boat shed. These two features bring 100s of people to town every day and you can see why it’s quite the popular Instagram photo hot spot. The historic red shed is where the people of Glenorchy stored and sorted goods that arrived on steamers.

A nice and easy walk worth checking out is the Glenorchy Lagoon. It’s only a short walk from the wharf and will take you through a beautiful wetland area perfect for birdwatching. Finish it off with a bite to eat and a drink in one of the local bars.

For a bit of adventure, jump on a jet boat wilderness experience with Dart River Adventures - you’ll explore iconic, untouched landscapes inaccessible by other means in the pristine Dart River Valley.

Dart River Wilderness Experience

Another great spot to head out on a day trip to is the Cadrona Hotel. Nestled in the charming little town of Cadrona, the journey across the Crown Range, known for its stunning alpine views, is absolutely breathtaking.

The Gibbston Valley area has been captivating visitors with a wide range of cellar door facilities and wine-tourism activities and is home to some of the world’s best Pinot Noir. Jump on an E-Bike from Better by Bike in the heart of Arrowtown and make your way into the Gibbston Valley to try the world-class Pinot Noir for yourself! The 16km ride is super flat and easy. It takes you past stunning river gorges, across seven bridges including the famous Kawarau Bridge Bungy.

Kinross Winery.

An incredible location to spend some time at is the Kinross Winery. Kinross offers the full experience. Enjoy a wine tasting from the cellar door, grab a takeaway dinner from their delicious bistro, soak in their hot tubs and even spend a night in one of their cottages. A beautiful option to soak up some more time in the vines.

Queenstown is a destination that caters to all types of travellers. Whether you're an adrenaline junkie, a nature lover, or simply seeking tranquility, this scenic town has it all. So, pack your bags, prepare for an adventure of a lifetime, and get ready to create unforgettable memories in Queenstown.

We’ll see you on the road!

13 Reasons Why You MUST Visit Queenstown

Queenstown is one of the most popular visitor destinations in New Zealand. A quick glance at the stats shows the scale of Queenstown’s desirability as an adventure and relaxation capital:

  • The town hosts over 2 million visitors per year.
  • By 2006 the Skyline Gondola and Luge had hit over 10 million visitors
  • More than 200 attractions and activities are available to pick from
  • Queenstown has won a number of prestigious awards, including. Australasia’s Leading Destination in 2014.

Source: QueenstownNZ

What can’t speak can’t lie – the impressive visitor stats and accolades that Queenstown has amassed are telling, to say the least. But if you’re still not sold on the idea of making a trip to the jewel of the South Island, then let us help you out with these 13 reasons why you MUST visit Queenstown.

1. Where Else Can You Gorge On Ferburger?

Lovingly referred to by some as “Queenstown’s worst kept secret”, Fergburger has been satisfying even the most ardent of culinary critics – both domestic and international – for a number of years.

Just take a look at this juicy burger, and tell us you don’t want a piece of the action:

win a trip to queenstown

2. It’s The Spiritual Home Of Bungy Jumping

Who ever would have thought that jumping from a great height while attached to an elastic cord would catch on as a sport? One man, AJ Hackett, did. In 1988 he founded the first commercial bungy jump location at the Kawarau Bridge. The Kawarau Bridge Bungy is now one of the most famous jumps in the world, and is also the only place in Queenstown to offer tandem jumps.

If that’s not daring enough for you, then take the plunge (pun definitely intended) and give the Nevis Bungy a try. This is New Zealand’s highest bungy jump, and is something to definitely cross off your bucket list.

3. Indulge In NZ’s Best Skiing And Snowboarding

Queenstown is NZ’s favourite winter playground, and for good reason too. With a number of world-class skifields in close proximity (including Cardrona, Coronet Peak, Treble Cone, and the Remarkables). Keep an eye out for ski and snowboard packages that include lift passes, gear hire, and transfers all rolled into one.

4. Queenstown Buzzes All Year Round

Not many places can claim to be a great destination all year round, regardless of the season. But Queenstown can definitely make this claim. Whether you visit in the coldest depths of winter or the scorching summer peak, you’ll be spoilt rotten when it comes to things to do.

In fact, one of Queenstown’s most famous events is the aptly-named Winter Festival . So even if you can’t make it down during the summer, there’s an endless litany of exciting attractions and things to do.

5. The Locals Are Very Friendly

When it comes to friendliness, Queenstown has some serious street cred. The town is routinely named as being one of the friendliest cities in the world.

The locals will always be willing to help you out with directions or pointers on the best activities, excursions, and places to dine out.

Make good use of this local knowledge when visiting Queenstown, to ensure that you don’t miss out on anything.

6. You Can Drive The Spectacular Crown Range Road

If you want to combine an exciting drive with amazing scenery, then take the Crown Range Road between Queenstown and Wanaka. This amazing stretch of tarmac looks like something out of a Top Gear episode. Make sure you obey the road rules and keep to the left, as well as watching your speed – this can be a tricky dive, especially if you’re not used to Kiwi road conditions. Unless, of course, you’re this guy:

7. There’s A Range Of Accommodation To Suit All Tastes And Budgets

Queenstown is blessed with a wide range of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets (including our very own Element Escapes apartments). Whether you’re after a vibrant backpacker hostel or luxury accommodation, you’ll be able to find something that suits. However, it pays to bear in mind that Queenstown accommodation can sell out rather quickly, especially in the summertime – so book early to avoid disappointment.

Make sure you check out our exclusive apartments in Queenstown’s top locations .

8. You Can Visit Historic Arrowtown And Absorb NZ Gold Mining History

Located just a short drive from Queenstown is the historic small town of Arrowtown. Formerly a gold mining hub, the town fell to a population of approximately 200 residents in the mid 20th Century, before rebounding over the following decades to a population of nearly 2,500.

All new buildings constructed in Arrowtown are required to meet strict appearance rules, intended to maintain the historic look and feel of the town.

win a trip to queenstown

9. The Night Life Is Phenomenal

One of the reasons why Queenstown attracts so many punters from across the globe is down to its fantastic nightlife. If you’re in the mood to party, then you’ll love visiting Queenstown. Nightlife highlights include world-class nightclubs, as well as lively pub tours that are always a hit with out of town visitors.

10. You Can Soak Up The Sights On The Gondola

Here’s the dilemma: It’s a clear, sunny day in Queenstown and you want to get the best view possible of the town and the surrounding area. What do you do? There’s only one option – you get on the gondola and indulge in one of the most breathtaking views in New Zealand. Now’s a better time than ever to conquer that fear of heights!

11. It’s Adrenalin Junkie Paradise

Queenstown isn’t known as the adventure capital of the world for nothing. The town and surrounding area is Nirvana for anyone interested in getting the adrenalin racing and blood flowing. You can indulge in sky diving, white water rafting, zipline riding, and even the famous (yet somewhat more sedate) luge.

12. Queenstown Is Backpacker Friendly

If you’re going through the endless travel phase and feeling a bit short on cash, then don’t despair – Queenstown is a backpacker friendly city. Sure, you can live the high life and blow through cash like it’s going out of fashion – but you can also enjoy yourself as a backpacker or perpetual tourist (and you’ll find plenty of people doing exactly the same as you).

13. Queenstown Is Family Friendly

Like most destinations in New Zealand, Queenstown is very family friendly. There are a number of fantastic activities you can do with the kids in tow, and they will never be far from something to keep them occupied. If you’re looking for a great location to spend some time with your family, then you’d be hard pressed to find better than Queenstown.

"Tap for a chance to be a VIP". Tap and it just reloads the page :(

I was getting stuck on that too. What if you scan the QR code with your phone? That worked for me.

Same. QR code worked though.

Nah just took me to the same page lol

This is my experience too. I'm on a PC though, maybe it's better on mobile ?

The reload thing happened to me in edge but I got through fine in chrome.

This seems to be the direct link? https://bluebirdvip.co.nz/promo-page/?activity%5B%5D=spa&act…

Takes me to https://bluebirdvip.co.nz/ on Edge.

Just tried again. Firefox and Chrome worked, Edge didn't.

win a trip to queenstown

Thanks - this worked for me - using Chrome

Works on brave browser

managed to win an instax camera, thanks Wakrak!

Nice. May as well mark yourself as a winner.

i tried to but the option doesnt seem to be there on this one :(

Well done. It's because the comp is down as a 'Lucky Draw' and is not yet past the expiry date so you can't mark yourself as a winner yet. If @Wakrak changes it to 'Instant Win' then you will be able to show off your winning glory on these pages. Otherwise, wait until after June 30th and then you can.
