Any dermatologist will tell you to shop for skin care for your unique skin type. See, those with hypersensitive dry skin will have a completely different lineup than those who are oily and acne-prone. This same nuanced approach should be taken with your hair care.

The first step: Find out your hair type ( a quick quiz here if needed ). After that, you'll want to read up on your hair type care tips—for the 3b folks, we've got you covered below. Time to enter the world of curls.

Type 3b hair.

Type 2 constitutes wavy hair, while type 3 is strictly curls. The main defining feature between types 2 and 3 is the "S" shape—if you have occasional waves but never quite form a ringlet, then you're probably type 2.

However, type 3 curls have a wide range as well. Anyone with 3a curls will have wider ringlets, while those with 3b curls have a bit tighter form. Type 3c is the tightest form of curls before entering type 4, which is coils.

What it looks like.

Now that you know where type 3b fits, let's dive into what it looks like. "3b hair is all about the curl—people with type 3b hair tend to have tight, springy curls with a lot of volume," stylist Cassandra Olivia tells mbg.

"Each curl is usually no bigger than a highlighter or a marker, even across different hair textures," she adds. If your curls are larger than a marker, then you probably fall into the 3a category instead.

Think of 3b strands like a loose corkscrew with a bit of texture, frizz , and tons of volume. Of course, like any hair type, you can have a few 2c waves or 3c curls thrown in the mix, so judge your hair based on the most predominant curl shape.

Hair care tips.

If you've gotten this far, it probably means you're a 3b hair type, so let's get into the best care tips from the pros so you can tend to your curls with intention:

Don't overwash your curls.

"Wash one to two times per week, or honestly as needed," Olivia says. "If you wash 3b hair too much , you're stripping hair of its much-needed natural moisture," she says. When the hair is stripped of moisture, your curls will have trouble holding shape.

"It's harder for natural oils to travel down 3b hair compared to straight hair, so you want to make sure you keep those oils in your hair as much as possible. When you do wash, choose a shampoo and conditioner made specifically for curly hair ," she adds.

Use a clean, hydrating wash routine.

"Using a clean shampoo and conditioner system like NTRL by Sabs' LavRiche Collection will ensure you have a clean and healthy scalp while not losing your precious natural oils," celebrity stylist and founder of NTRL by Sabs Sabrina Rowe Holdsworth tells mbg.

The key here is to find a shampoo that gets the job done, without drying out your scalp or strands. Just as with any hair type, be sure to exclusively cleanse the scalp and let the excess product rinse through your strands rather than rubbing shampoo directly on your hair shaft and ends.

Swap your light conditioner for a heavy hitter during dry periods.

As Holdsworth and Olivia note, 3b hair needs tons of moisture. A lightweight conditioner may work for your regular wash routine (and help to mitigate any buildup dragging down your curls), but adding a nourishing hair mask to the mix every other week or so is a good idea.

Or, you can rotate in these rich conditioners when the dry weather hits. Just as you might use a heavier moisturizer during winter, you shouldn't hesitate to address your hair's changing needs.

Call upon rich masks to ease situational dryness as well—be it post-swim, after an intense blowout, while traveling, etc.

Nourishing masks with plant butters, botanical oils, and loads of vitamins will give your hair a reboot if you're experiencing dry, lackluster hair. Add one of these ultra-hydrating masks to your routine every other week—think of it like an IV drip for your strands.

Detangle, but don't destroy.

"I think detangling is necessary for a successful wash day but needs to be a delicate process," Holdsworth explains. "3b curls are very delicate and can be fickle," she adds. Rather than raking a brush through your hair, run a wide-toothed comb through your strands while it's still wet (or even while your conditioner sets in).

"Once you have detangled the hair, I prefer to abandon brushes or combs and use your hands for air drying and styling," she adds. When your hair begins to dry, brushing it may lead to frizz and a broken curl shape, so stick with finger-styling.

Don't forget about your diffuser.

If you don't like waiting for your hair to dry, then call upon your trusty diffuser. These tools work like magic to dry the strands, reduce frizz, and enhance curl shape simultaneously—but always apply a heat protectant before going in with your dryer.

Or, if you're dealing with loads of heat damage, opt for something like the Zuvi Halo Hair Dryer —a tool that uses light to dry the hair rather than heat. The dryer comes with a diffuser attachment, so keep that on hand.

Not sure how to use one? Here's a step-by-step guide to get you started .

Plop your hair.

Olivia's tip: Get your strands relatively dry either from the air or a diffuser, and then plop your hair using an old T-shirt. or buy an inexpensive one just for plopping. Here's how she recommends wrapping up your strands:

  • Apply your curl-defining cream and then tilt your hair upside down.
  • Grab the T-shirt and pull it over the top of your hair on your forehead.
  • Take the sleeves and wrap them around your head.
  • Tuck your hair into the pillow you've created and then tie the sleeves of the T-shirt around your head to tighten.

"Plopping will help keep curls together and compacted so you get less frizz and a more defined curl," she explains. Plus, this wrap will protect your hair from potential friction on your pillow that could create some unwanted frizz and odd-shaped curls.

Keep your creams light.

"I love products, but this hair type can also be fine, in which case less product is more," Holdsworth notes. "You want soft weight to combat some frizz but not take away volume," she says—aka, opt for lightweight formulas.

"Think airy mousse and light creams over heavy gels," she says. When it comes to leave-in conditioners, pick something deeply nourishing but still light to the touch, like the Pattern Leave-In Conditioner.

Embrace your curls.

"Hair should be fun, even if it requires some work, and I believe curls are the MOST fun pattern you can have," Holdsworth says. One key to loving your curls: Give yourself enough time to style them however you like, rather than rush to the finish line.

If you have adequate time available, you can treat the process of washing and styling as a ritual rather than a chore. It may sound dramatic, but if you put on your favorite music, wear your favorite comfy pajama set, and light a candle, your hair care routine may turn out to be something you look forward to.

"Experiment with different methods of washing, styling, and drying so you can really learn to appreciate your fabulous hair," she adds. Don't be afraid to ask around and see what your curly friends and family love—some of the best products and practices are passed via word-of-mouth.

The takeaway.

Type 3b hair consists of tight, bouncy "S"-shaped curls. This hair type calls for less frequent washing than straight and wavy hair types and may require a bit more time for styling. You can opt for the diffuser method for a manual dry, let your curls air-dry, or plop your strands. No matter what you choose, remember to embrace your fun texture and experiment with products and techniques until you find something you truly love. Want more curly hair tips? What Is 3B Hair?

3B hair is a hair type with a defined curl pattern. It is the second most curly hair type in Andre Walker’s type 3 category. So, on the surface, 3B hair strands are curly rather than straight, wavy, coily or kinky.

Although, to fully understand what 3B hair is, you need to know all the hair types and where they came from. Andre Walker, a celebrity hairstylist, is credited with creating the most widely used hair type classification system .

It includes 4 main hair types: Type 1 (straight), Type 2 (wavy), Type 3 (curly), and Type 4 (coily). Within each primary hair type are subcategories (A, B, and C).

A will always be the least textured, and C will always be the most textured.

Here are all the hair types from the system:

  • Type 1 (Straight) Hair (1A, 1B, and 1C)
  • Type 2 (Wavy) Hair (2A, 2B, and 2C)
  • Type 3 (Curly) Hair (3A, 3B, and 3C)
  • Type 4 (Coily) Hair (4A, 4B, and 4C)

As you can see, type 3 hair is wavy, and the category is further divided into 3A, 3B, and 3C hair, which 3A being the least curly, 3C being the curliest, and 3B hair being in the middle. It’s moderately curly hair that has a lot of body and volume but can be dry and frizzy.

Now that we’ve cleared that up, it’s time to learn more about 3B hair.

A thoughtful African-American female with a coarser hair texture used a blow dryer style dry and style her wet hair.

What Does 3B Hair Look Like?

When it comes to their physical makeup, 3B curls have a circumference comparable to a Sharpie marker. The strands are coily and springy, but not exactly tight. When 3B hair is left to its own devices, it forms a giant lion’s mane of curls.

What Are the Benefits of Having 3B Hair?

3B hair comes with its own set of unique benefits, and we’ll highlight those here. It’s time for a little bit of 3B hair appreciation!

  • It’s easy to style. Despite its reputation for being unruly, 3B hair is quite easy to style. The curls give your hair a lot of built-in volume and texture, so you can just scrunch it up with some product and be on your way.
  • It’s versatile. 3B hair can be worn in a variety of styles – curly, wavy, straight; you name it. And because the curls are on the looser side, they’re easy to manipulate into different shapes.
  • It’s voluminous. 3B curlies get to rock hairstyles with a ton of oomph without much effort due to the natural volume 3B curls have.
  • It’s got hang time. Unlike curlier hair types, 3B hair has some hang time once it grows out. This is because it doesn’t have much natural shrinkage, unlike super curly hair types (like 4B and 4C).

What Are the Challenges of Having 3B Hair?

Of course, no hair type is perfect, and 3B hair comes with its challenges. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you have this hair type:

  • It can be frizzy. One of the biggest downfalls of having 3B hair is that it can be prone to frizz. This is because the curls are looser and have less definition, so they can quickly turn into a frizzy mess if they’re not properly taken care of.
  • It can be dry . 3B hair is also susceptible to dryness because the curls’ structure makes it difficult for the scalp’s natural oils to reach the ends of your hair. If you’re not careful, this can lead to split ends and breakage over time.
  • It can be difficult to manage. 3B hair can be a handful. That’s especially true if your 3B curls are new to you. With all the frizziness and volume, getting your curls to do what you want can be tricky.

How to Care For 3B Hair

Curly Hair Routine 3b 3c| How to get definition and volume

Most people know that curly hair needs special care. The problem is, not everyone knows how to take care of their curls properly. This can lead to dryness, frizziness, and breakage. To help you out, here are our top tips for taking care of 3B hair:

Deep Condition Regularly

One of the best things you can do for your 3B curls is to deep condition them regularly. This will help to hydrate and nourish your strands, and it will also help to reduce frizz. In most cases, it’s best to deep condition your hair at least a couple of times per month, but you should choose a frequency that works for you.

Use a Protein Treatment Now and Again

Another great way to care for your 3B curls is to use a protein treatment. This will help to strengthen your strands and prevent breakage .

You can use a protein treatment once a month or as needed. Too many protein treatments can be counterproductive, leaving you with crunchy strands that are more susceptible to breakage, so be sure not to overdo it.

Choose 3B-Friendly Hair Products

When it comes to finding the right products for your 3B curls, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind. For starters, you’ll want to ensure that you’re using products designed for curly hair .

These products will typically be more hydrating and less likely to cause frizz.

If your hair is on the drier side, you may want to use a heavier cream or oil to help hydrate your strands. Those with 3B hair don’t tend to have oily scalps, but if you’re in the minority, reach for lightweight products.

A young mixed-race female is a 3B with S-shaped curls according to Andre Walker's hair typing system.

Be Gentle When Styling

When styling your 3B curls, it’s important to be gentle. This means minimizing heat, using a wide-tooth comb to detangle, and being careful not to yank on your strands. It’s also important to opt for styles that work with your texture rather than against it.

Try Low-Manipulation Styles

When choosing styles for your 3B hair, opt for low-manipulation options, meaning styles that don’t require much pulling or tugging at your strands. Low-manipulation styles are often quick and easy to install, and don’t put your hair through the wringer.

Be Careful with Heat Styling

Heat styling can be tough on your 3B curls. If you choose to use heat, be sure to use a heat protectant and style it at a lower temperature. Additionally, it’s best to avoid heat styling whenever possible to prevent damage.

Trim Your Ends Regularly

Split ends are a curly girl’s worst nightmare. They can lead to frizz, tangles, and breakage. The best way to avoid split ends is to trim your hair regularly .

This doesn’t mean you have to go all-out with a big chop every few weeks, but getting a trim of about 1/4 an inch every 6-8 weeks can make a big difference.

Use a Gentle Shampoo

Last but not least, be sure to use a gentle shampoo when cleansing your 3B curls. Avoid shampoos with harsh sulfates and opt instead for sulfate-free cleansers. They clean your hair without stripping away your strands’ natural oils needed to stay healthy.

How to Style 3B Hair

There are endless possibilities when it comes to styling 3B hair. Whether you want to wear your curls naturally or go against the grain with some wavy or straight styles, we’ve got you covered. Here are a few of our favorite 3B hairstyles:

Wash and Go

CURRENT CURLY HAIR ROUTINE 2020 | WASH N GO | 3B/3C CURLS | TIARA ANALYSE

The wash-and-go is the perfect go-to style for most with 3B hair. It’s quick, easy, and low-maintenance. To achieve this look, simply wash and condition your hair as usual. Then, apply a leave-in conditioner or styling cream and allow your hair to air dry.

Braid-Out Tutorial ONE PRODUCT ONLY 3A/3B

The braid-out is a classic 3B hairstyle that can be worn in numerous ways. To achieve this look, start by washing and conditioning your hair.

Then, apply a leave-in conditioner or styling cream and divide your hair into sections.

Next, braid each section from roots to ends and allow your hair to air dry. Once your hair is dry, unbraid the sections and style as desired. The larger your braids are, the looser your curls will be.

The twist-out is another great option for those with 3B hair. This style can be worn in several ways, from loose and beachy to tight and defined. To achieve this look, start by washing and conditioning your hair as usual.

Then, slather on a detangler, leave-in, and styler.

Next, divide your hair into sections and twist each section. You can use a product like a curl cream or gel to help define your twists.

Once your hair is fully twisted, allow it to air dry or diffuse it on low heat. When your hair is completely dry, untwist the sections and style as usual.

Half-Up Half Down

HALF UP HALF DOWN W/ CLIP INS!!

This classic style can be dressed up or down. To achieve this look, start with clean, dry, defined curls (like a wash n’ go or twist-out).

Use your hands or the straight end of a rat-tail comb to divide your hair into two sections – one above and one below – and secure them both with an elastic.

Apply some gel or pomade around your front hairline to tame frizz, and then brush the top portion of your hair backward. Then, take the top half of your hair and brush it into a ponytail.

Finish up the style by releasing the bottom half and styling it as you see fit.

You can scrunch in some product to revive your curls, twist a few sections of hair around your fingers, or otherwise style your curls to your liking.

Two-Strand Twists

Two Strand Twists| 3b/3c Hair Type

The best thing about two-strand twists is that they protect your ends while giving your hair a chance to grow. If you have 3B hair, you can achieve this style by using a leave-in conditioner and twisting your damp hair into small sections. You can also use a gel or pomade to give your twists definition and hold.

Crown Braid

Crown Braid Tutorial on Natural Hair

This is a great way to keep your hair out of your face while looking ultra chic. It’s easy to do; just follow these steps: Start with clean, dry, and styled hair. Divide your hair into two sections – one on each side.

Braid each section of hair, starting from the top of your head and working your way down. If you have shorter hair, it’s best to do cornrows. If you have longer hair, you can do three strand plaits.

Once you reach the end of each braid, secure it with a clear elastic, then cross both braids over the top of your head. Secure them with another clear elastic or bobby pins. If you have any flyaways, use some gel or hairspray to tame them.

Dos and Don’ts of Caring for 3B Hair

Caring for 3B hair can be challenging, but it’s doable with the right products and techniques. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Use a shampoo and conditioner designed for curly hair to hydrate and nourish your curls.
  • Be gentle with your hair. Curly hair is more prone to breakage, so avoid being too rough when styling or shampooing.
  • Invest in a quality deep conditioner. Deep conditioning will help to keep your curls moisturized and healthy.
  • Use a diffuser when drying your hair. This will help to minimize frizz and maintain the shape of your curls.
  • Be patient with your hair. Curly hair can take a long time to air dry, so plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time.
  • Experiment with different products. What works for one person might not work for you, so it’s essential to find what products work best for your hair.

A black female with a 3B hair type, according to a particular hair typing system is embracing the natural hair community.

Don’t

  • Shampoo too often. Curly hair doesn’t need to be shampooed as often as straight hair. Over-shampooing can strip your hair of its natural oils and cause it to become dry and frizzy.
  • Use heat styling tools too often. Heat can damage your hair, so try to air dry or diffuse your hair whenever possible.
  • Skip the conditioner. Conditioner is essential to any haircare routine , but it’s especially important for curly hair. Curly hair is often dry and frizzy, so a good conditioner will help to hydrate and tame your locks.
  • Be afraid to experiment . There are a lot of products out there, so don’t be scared to try new things. You might be surprised at what works for your hair.

The Ultimate 3B Hair Handbook

When you love something, it’s only instinct to obsess & learn everything you can about it. The reverse can be true, too: sometimes, the more you learn about a thing, the deeper in love with it you plunge.

3B hair types, that goes for you, too. If you’ve been looking for an all-in-one guide to caring for your envy-worthy curls, we’ve got the holy grail of handbooks for you.

This guide is chock full of delicious knowledge on the nuances of your texture—and the inside scoop on how to bring out the best in your springy spirals. Our end goal, though? To give you plenty of new reasons to love and love on your locks and build a future of hair care full of joy, bounce, and resiliency.

What is 3B hair?

Today's modern hair typing system came about thanks to celebrity stylist Andre Walker. During an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Walker theorized that hair falls under one of four umbrella categories: 1

Within each category there are multiple other hair tiers. And in many cases, we find that a single head of hair sports multiple textures.

3B falls into the curly category—directly in the middle, to be exact. This curl type is thought of as the epitome of medium-curly. It’s recognizable by:

  • Its bouncy nature
  • Its sharply defined spiral-shaped curls
  • Its body and volume
  • Its movement and verve

Sound like your hair? Congratulations, gorgeous—you likely have type 3B hair.

3B vs Other “3” Hair Types

While you may feel confident that you have 3B curly hair, it’s always helpful to see how your pattern compares with others to better identify its wants and needs. Different curly hair types thrive with different cleaning & styling methods.

As a refresher, here’s where 3B stands in comparison to its cousin curlies

  • 3A – The "waviest" curly hair texture. 3A hair consists of S-shaped, loose curls. While 3A curls can appear quite springy and curly when fresh out of the shower, they quickly lose curl & definition with heat styling or throughout a day of wear.
  • 3B – This curly hair type consists of bouncy, defined ringlets about the size of a pointer finger. Even with heat styling, these curls will often stay intact. Type 3B hair tends to experience quite a bit of dehydration & frizz, particularly if it’s not lovingly moisturized regularly.
  • 3C – The curliest of the curly hair types. 3C hair is characterized by springy, tight curls. They're tighter than 3B hair in both size & concentration on the scalp. 3C ringlets typically measure about the circumference of a pencil. They also usually appear very dense & voluminous. Like a 3B hair type, they can become frizzy when brushed. However, these curls are looser than the 4B hair and 4C hair .

Now, think about your hair at its healthiest, most illustrious hair day. Which of these three 3’s sounds the truest for you?

If you’re still trying to decide which curl type you align closest to, step into PATTERN’s hair care library & take a peek at the coveted Curl Guide . In this curly hair bible, we dive into hair care knowledge like porosity, patterns & transitioning hair.

4 Golden Guidelines for 3B Hair Care

Every hair type and sub-category deserves loving consideration when it comes to curating a hair care & styling routine. There are four main cardinal guidelines when using curly hair products to care for 3B curls and ensure they look their best for their longest:

  • Avoid excessive heat – 3B hair dries out quickly. When you have this texture, do your best to avoid excessive heat styling unless you’re preparing your hair with moisture and protection.. If you must use the blow dryer, always opt for the cool setting. And whatever you do, always add a protective layer to your hair before heat treatment with a trusty product like PATTERN’s Heat Protectant .
  • Use lightweight products – You don't want your hair to lose its signature spring, do you? We thought not. Heavy creams tend to weigh 3B curlies down. Your best bet is to look for silicone-free conditioners and leave-in products ( psst : may we suggest PATTERN’s Lightweight Conditioner ?).
  • Use a hydrating shampoo – More than anything else, 3B curls want to be drenched in moisture. Making hydration a cornerstone of your curly hair routine keeps your strands strong, springy & shiny. 2 PATTERN’s Hydration Shampoo can keep your roots lusciously robust while remaining free of heavy buildup.
  • Condition often – Give your curls a helpful boost with a conditioner that hydrates & strengthens simultaneously. Try our nourishing Medium Conditioner for gorgeous, defined curls. Or give your hair care some extra oomph with our lightweight Leave-In Conditioner to help you bounce back throughout the week (& ensure you never lose that bounce in the first place).

How Often Should 3B Hair Be Washed?

Since this hair texture tends to lose moisture quickly, wearers should aim to wash their hair once a week. Conditioning, on the other hand, can be done more frequently. Most 3B curl types benefit from a good condition 2 to 3 times per week. You can use your daily conditioner or switch it up with a deep-conditioning mask, such as PATTERN’s Treatment Mask , to indulge your curls in some extra nourishment.

How Often Should I Use Treatment Masks?

Ideally, 3B hair types shouldn’t need to use their treatment mask of choice more than once a week. As for application, remember to apply it to your ends rather than your roots to combat excess buildup.

If you're looking for a lightweight alternative that provides moisture & strengthening power, a little oil goes a long way. Try adding a few drops of PATTERN’s Jojob a Oil Blend to other curly hair products like conditioner to concoct a hydrating, glossifying cocktail for your curls.

Styling Tips for 3B Hair Textures

Stepping in and out of the shower is just the first step in 3B curl care. To maximize your spirals’ flauntability, one must study the art of styling .

You can go about 3B hairstyles in a few different ways. It's always best to work with your curl pattern rather than against it, and implementing methods that let your curls thrive will ensure your hair looks and feels its best.

To make your curls pop, test out these tried-&-true styling techniques:

  • Plopping – TikTok had this one right. If you are curious about how to plop your hair , take these steps to take this trend for a spin (erm, a spiral): 3
  • Gather your curls & drop them onto a microfiber towel, such as PATTERN’s Microfiber Towel
  • Next, pick up the towel (with your hair in it)
  • Twist the towel securely around the nape of your neck
  • Keep every hair strand covered for at least 20 minutes

When you undo the towel and unveil your ‘do, do a little dance and enjoy your definedcurly cuteness.

  • Comb from the bottom up – After a shower, the last thing you want to do is damage your vulnerable roots. Combat hair breakage (& frizz) by combing your hair from the ends of your hair & working your way up. Make sure to work in small sections.
  • Squish & condish – When 3B hair feels parched, try this styling method to quench its thirst:
  • Bend over a bowl or sink, & get your conditioner ready
  • With conditioner in your hands, scrunch your hair upwards & work the product through your ends
  • Once it's adequately covered, rinse your hands & repeat the step with water
  • Keep squishing your hair until it's free of product
  • Lock in your curl structure – Invite your kinks to get the party started with our Curl Gel . Apply after your wash for extra bounce, or use on dry hair for some slicking action. PATTERN’s Curl Mousse can also come in handy if you’re after a luscious, lightweight texture.

There are countless approaches to styling type 3 hair (specifically 3B hair) to try, so experiment until you discover your groove. With a little dedicated practice, you'll understand how to style your hair without thinking about it and give your type 3B curls the chance to dance they’re aching for.

Every time we see a head full of beautiful, bouncy curls , we have to fight the inner beauty editor urge to lead a standing ovation. Because while wearing your hair au naturel has never been cooler, we know the serious work it takes to master—and maintain—curls. From styling creams to leave-ins to nourishing oils, a curly head of hair sans styling and TLC risks frizz, knots, and a serious case of dehydration.

And while no two heads of hair are alike, curls generally fall into one of nine curl types ranging from type 2A (fine, slightly s-shaped waves) to type 4C (tightly coiled, densely packed curls). Somewhere in between the two lies type 3B: tight and springy curls with significant volume and frizz. Sound familiar? Read on for everything you need to know about caring for type 3B curls, straight from trichologist Bridgette Hill and hairstylist Marilisa Sears.

Meet the Expert

  • Bridgette Hill is a certified trichologist and founder of Root Cause Scalp Analysis .
  • Marilisa Sears is a hairstylist and specialist who has served as Marc Anthony True Professional Haircare’s artistic director for more than 25 years.

What Is Type 3B Hair?

According to the hair typing system (which, to be clear, has a long and complicated history ), 3B curls are characterized as tight and springy—the sort of curls that wrap around your finger, says Sears, with a circumference similar to that of a Sharpie.

Hill warns that the hair typing system is not perfect—naturally curly hair often has more than one type of pattern, and hair texture can create varied patterns as a result of different fiber weights.

Especially being in the middle of the type 3 spectrum, someone with type 3B curls could very well have a mix of 2C, 3A, 3B, and 3C curl patterns. That being said, for this article we’ve all agreed that we’ll refer to 3B curls as those with medium frizz and texture, and loose to loosely corkscrewed curl patterns.

Differentiating Between Type 3 Curl Patterns

To put it simply, all type 3 hair is definitively curly. The size, texture, and volume of those curls are then broken down into three subcategories: 3A, which has S-shaped, loose, softer curls; 3B, which has ringlet-shaped, voluminous, springy curls; and 3C, which has corkscrewed, tight, stiff curls.

Those with 3B hair are likely to have a mix of looser spirals and springy corkscrews throughout, as well as a variety of characteristics shared with 3A and 3B hair according to Sears.

That being said, type 3B hair generally features a significant amount of volume and defined curl patterns. This hair type tends to experience shrinkage from wet to dry and becomes puffy and frizzy when brushed (similar to type 3C styles). Unlike 3A hair, which can lose definition and curl depending on how it’s styled, 3B curls stay coiled no matter the tool or product used on them.

And regardless of hair texture, Hill says type 3B hair’s most defining characteristics tend to be dehydration and frizz.

How Should You Care for Type 3B Hair?

Both experts are in agreement when it comes to the best ways to care for type 3B hair:

  • Layer products to build and retain moisture
  • Avoid heat as much as possible
  • Opt for lightweight leave-in products to avoid weighing hair down
  • Create (and follow) a comprehensive plan for daily care and protection

Above all else, good products and protective care are key to maintaining 3B curls. Focus on building and retaining moisture by layering products throughout the scalp. The most important word here is layer.

Hill suggests committing to a pre-shampoo oil treatment before every shampoo—and notes that all deep masks should be used on dry, dirty hair prior to cleansing. Both pros recommend layering a rich shampoo and conditioner in a variety of ways to help define curls with minimal to no frizz. Another tip from Hill: Look for products with hyaluronic acid , fatty acids, and oils to properly hydrate hair. Avoid sulfates and heat, color, and chemical treatments as much as possible to minimize damage and dryness.

The more hydrated and moisturized hair is, the longer the curl pattern can be retained—and less hair washing is never a bad thing for curls. To do this, some sort of leave-on hydrator is crucial for avoiding frizz and dryness according to both experts. Layer on a lightweight leave-in conditioner and follow with a curl-specific product (cream, milk, etc.).

While those with a coarser hair texture should opt for a curl cream post-shower, Sears says finer textures should swap it out for a less dense option (think a mousse or lotion). Regardless, look for products with lightweight textures to avoid weighing down curls and losing definition. Finally, add in a layer of lightweight oil to seal in hydration.

And lastly, remember that daily care and protection are essential in extending the life of a hair wash. Hill suggests lightly moisturizing hair with a product of your choice in between washes as well as creating a sleep hair routine, whether that be protecting hair in loose buns or braids or investing in satin or silk pillowcases .

The Best Hairstyles and Cuts for Type 3B Hair

Type 3B hair can be deceiving when wet, so Hill suggests cutting hair dry . That way you’ll have clear curl patterns, proportions, and textures to work with.

Since type 3B curls are fairly versatile, you can really go as long or as short as you’d like according to Sears. For longer lengths, she suggests incorporating longer layers to create body and movement. Meanwhile, for cuts around the collarbone and shorter, she says adding tons of layers adds a truly timeless shape and sophistication to curls.

When properly hydrated, type 3B curls look amazing simply air-dried. Use the plopping method to style hair post-shower, and try to minimize heat styling (which will worsen frizz and damage hair, both experts warn). Between wash days, a loose ponytail puffed up top keeps frizz at bay and hair away from the face.

The Best Products for Type 3B Hair

Sears swears this is seriously one of the best products on the market for curly girls. She suggests saturating wet, clean hair with it from root to ends (generously), and then gently scrunching for simple, fuss-free curl prep.

This water-based mist brings hair back to life between wash days without weighing down strands. Simply spray and resculpt curls with fingers as needed. Plus, it’s infused with the brand’s signature scent to keep hair smelling fresh.

These clips are multi-use lifesavers for those trying to elongate or stretch curl patterns. Use one to first isolate an individual section of hair and then use it as a roller and setting tool to give curls more length and density.

With a weightless, milky texture and a boost of hydration from castor oil and murumuru butter , this serum makes for the perfect nourishing styling ritual. It defines curls and cuts down on frizz without causing buildup or weighing down strands.

This curl gel is a serious game-changer when it comes to perfecting your wash-and-go routine. A powerhouse mix of aloe vera, coconut oil, cacay oil, and kahai oil leaves hair flexible and nourished with defined, juicy curls.

More than a few of my favorite curly girls swear by Innersense . With formulas good for your hair and the planet, the brand prides itself on clean chemistry and radical transparency. This conditioner is lightweight but seriously effective, leaving hair hydrated and frizz-free.

All About Curly Hair

Before discussing 3b hair, let’s first look at the basics of curly hair and why certain people have it.

Why Do You Have Curly Hair?

Your genes determine a lot about you and your physical traits, including your hair.

So if you have curly hair, it’s probably because both or either one of your parents were born with curly hair too.

Curly hair is a dominant gene . So even if one of your parents passed down the straight hair gene to you and the other the curly hair gene, you’ll likely have curly hair .

There’s also the matter of follicles, where each of your hair strands grows out. There are actually different follicle shapes that each produce a corresponding hair pattern.

Round follicles produce straight hair, while oval follicles produce curly to coily hair.

What Is Your Curl Pattern?

Given that there are different curl patterns out there, several hair typing systems were eventually developed by different individuals.

The most common one called the Andre Walker Hair Typing System — which was created in the ‘90s — categorizes hair into four basic types:

Eventually, these hair types were further broken down into three subcategories: A, B, and C.

Based on the table above, we can see that type 3 hair is curly. It also has three subcategories: 3a hai r , 3b hair, and 3c ha ir .

3A hair is characterized by S-shaped, loose spiral curls that are about 1 inch in diameter.

3C hair is the curliest of all curly hair types. It has the diameter of a pen, and its curls look like tight and stiff ringlets on your head.

What Is 3B Hair?

Curly 3b hair, on the other hand, looks like corkscrew curls that are springy and well-defined. These curls have a diameter similar to that of a permanent marker.

Natural 3b hair is also characterized by voluminous ringlets looser than those of 3c hair.

It experiences a bit of shrinkage as it goes from wet to dry.

Being in between the two other subcategories of type 3 hair, don’t be surprised if some people with 3b hair have some loose spiral curls that look like those of 3a hair and some tight curls that resemble those of 3c hair.

But all in all, the curls of 3b hair tend to be very well-defined.

The texture of this hair type can also be described as medium to coarse, meaning each strand tends to be thick rather than fine.

What Are Some Issues With 3B Hair?

With its volume and well-defined curls, 3b hair looks gorgeous and full of life.

If in good condition, your hair will look glorious as it bounces up and down when you walk!

However, having 3b hair also comes with its own set of issues.

3b hair has medium porosity , meaning it may encounter some issues when it comes to holding in and absorbing moisture.

Because of this, the most common issues when it comes to 3b hair are frizziness and hydration.

Frizz occurs due to various factors. It may be a result of exposure to environmental elements like high humidity, which can cause your hair cuticles to swell, resulting in frizz.

However, it can also be caused by your hair cuticle getting damaged and broken, resulting in an unnatural lift or even significant breakage in your hair.

While the causes may differ, the outcome is still the same: your curly hair looks like a puffy, fluffy mess — and no one wants that!

Hydration Issues

Hydration is another factor that may adversely affect your 3b hair.

Curly hair like 3b hair tends to be dry since the oils from the scalp don’t pass down the strands as easily as they do on straight hair.

This is due to the shape of the curls, which makes it harder for the oils to cover each strand completely.

As a result, 3b hair tends to be dry.

However, other factors may contribute to the dryness of your curly hair, such as the following:

  • Applying too much heat to your hair regularly. This includes using a blow-dryer to dry your hair or flat irons to straighten it, which exposes your hair to excess heat, further drying it out.
  • Overwashing your hair. Washing your 3b hair too often may also strip your hair strands of natural oils.
  • Skipping conditioner. Conditioning your hair is vital to maintaining optimal hydration levels, so if you’re skipping this step, then it may exacerbate the dryness of your curly hair.

If left untreated, these issues may lead to you having to deal with hair breakage and split ends — not to mention they’ll prevent your curly hair from looking its best!

How To Take Care of 3B Hair

As with all hair types, caring for 3b hair is important.

To combat frizziness and hydration issues, you must maintain a routine that will help you keep the right amount of moisture in your hair — and always keep your hair looking gorgeous!

Here are some useful tips for caring for your 3b hair:

1. Minimize Heat Styling

Are you the type to regularly blow-dry your hair or straighten it with a flat iron?

If you have 3b hair, you should avoid exposing your hair to heat with these techniques as much as possible.

As mentioned previously, constantly exposing your curly hair to heat may dry it out and damage it, causing it to frizz or appear limp.

Plus, using a flat iron carelessly may lead you to burn your scalp or damage your follicles.

Now on occasions when using heat to style your hair can’t be avoided, make sure to use a heat protectant on your hair before using your heat-styling tools to minimize heat damage.

2. Use Good Hair Products for 3B Hair

It’s always a good idea to choose hair products that are made specifically for 3b hair.

If you’re experiencing significant frizz, dryness, or even damage, using the right 3b hair products will help your hair combat and bounce back from these issues!

This is why the most ideal hair products for 3b hair are hydrating ones that help keep dryness, frizz, and damage at bay.

They should have moisturizing and nourishing ingredients like shea butter, aloe vera , argan oil, and coconut oil that keep your curls healthy from their roots down to their tips.

The best shampoo for 3b hair is one that can clean your hair and scalp well without stripping it of natural oils. It should also allow you to detangle it with your fingers with ease.

So it’s best to look for a shampoo without many chemicals like sulfates, which can remove moisture from your curls and dry them out.

You can try the Maui Moisture Lightweight Hydration + Hibiscus Water Shampoo , which can cleanse, revive, and refresh your curly hair without much fuss!

Conditioner

Conditioning your hair every day with a high-quality, curl-loving conditioner will help keep your hair soft, smooth, and properly hydrated!

Carol’s Daughter Coco Creme Curl Quenching Conditioner is a great option for everyday use, as it’s designed to moisturize curls and prevent dryness.

Using a deep conditioner on 3b hair is also important. Not only will deep conditioners keep your hair moisturized, but they may also help repair damage and strengthen it.

For this, you can try the SheaMoisture Intensive Hydration Hair Masque to deep condition your curls and infuse them with a fantastic dose of moisture.

You may also want to use a leave-in conditioner for 3b hair to add more moisture to your hair. This will also help tame the frizziness that you may experience.

A great product to try is the Mixed Chicks Curl Defining & Frizz Eliminating Leave-In Conditioner , which fights frizz and protects your hair against frizz-causing environmental elements.

Styling Products

Love using other curl-specific products besides shampoo and conditioner, like hair gel, curl creams , or styling pomades ? Not a problem!

Just remember to use lightweight styling products for curly 3b hair, such as the Curlsmith Hydro Style Flexi-Jelly , which is designed to define and smooth out your curls without feeling heavy on the hair.

This will allow your curly hair to retain its body and definition without the curls looking like they’ve been weighed down by too much product. Limp and lifeless curls are a big no-no, after all!

3. Practice Good Hair Care

Caring for your hair is very important.

You can practice the following in order to protect your curly hair:

  • Wash your hair only once or twice a week. Your 3b hair needs your natural hair oils to remain healthy and soft. Shampooing every day washes away those oils, which may leave you with dry hair.  So if you’re the type who loves to shampoo often, try cutting back and shampooing your hair just once or twice a week, depending on how grimy your scalp and hair get.
  • Co-wash your hair. You can also opt to co-wash your hair or wash it using conditioner to cleanse it without drying it out. If you choose to do this, you can wash your hair with regular shampoo once a week and co-wash it two to three times a week to keep it clean and well-moisturized.
  • Deep-condition your hair once or twice a week . Deep conditioning your hair regularly can help further combat dryness or frizziness.
  • Detangle your hair gently. Try to avoid being too rough when brushing or detangling your curls, especially when they’re wet. Doing otherwise may damage your hair. Go through each tangle slowly: start at the ends of the hair and work your way up. You can also use a detangling brush instead of a regular brush to ensure a gentle detangling process.
  • Protect your hair from sun exposure. Just as you wear sunscreen to protect your skin, protecting your hair from the sun’s harmful rays is also important!  Limit your sun exposure as much as possible, but if it can’t be avoided, try covering your hair with a hat or scarf whenever you go outdoors.
  • Use silk or satin materials. Lastly, use silk or satin pillowcases when you sleep or use silk or satin scrunchies when tying your hair.  Silk and satin aren’t as absorbent as cotton, which means they won’t absorb any precious moisture from your curls and cause them to become dry as a result.  Also, they’re designed to minimize friction between your strands and the fabric. As such, they can help reduce frizz and even prevent breakage caused by friction.

What Are Examples of Great 3B Hairstyles?

Unsure about how to style 3b hair? Look no more, as we have some suggestions for you!

The good news is that the natural texture of 3b hair looks good with any hair length, so you can go for as long or as short as you want.

Short 3B Haircuts and Hairstyles

You can opt to get the following haircuts for your short 3b hair, which will give you a sleek and naturally edgy look that’s easy to maintain:

  • High top. This is a haircut where your curls are piled on top of your head while the sides and the back of your hair are cut close to the scalp to create a faded effect. This cut is low-maintenance but extremely flattering.
  • Pixie cut. With a pixie cut, your hair will be cut shorter on the sides and back while being kept slightly longer up top. This cut helps emphasize the volume and enhance the appearance of your curls.
  • Classic bob. To achieve a classic bob, your curls will be cut to a uniform length — usually an inch or two below your chin. A bob like this will help your curls look sleek and tidy.

Long 3B Haircuts and Hairstyles

If you want to keep your long 3b hair well past your shoulders, feel free to do so!

Here are some hairstyle and haircut ideas for your long curls:

  • Layered haircut. Adding layers to your long hair is a great way to give your curls additional body and movement.
  • Bangs. Curly bangs look fantastic with long curly 3b hair! You can go for curtain bangs to frame your face or blunt bangs to achieve a trendy hairstyle.
  • Clips. For a low-effort but fun look, you can use different accessories on your hair, like hair clips or headbands.
  • Ponytail. You can also tie your hair back in either a tight ponytail for a chic, sharp look or a loose ponytail for a casual look.

As you can see, the possibilities for styling 3b hair are almost endless!

Frequently Asked Questions

Should i comb 3b hair.

Yes, but be careful, especially when it’s wet!

Make sure to comb gently and use a wide-tooth comb that will go through your curls without snagging on them to avoid breakage or damage.

How Do You Sleep With 3B Curly Hair?

If you have mid-length to long 3b hair, the easiest and most optimal way to protect your hair while you sleep is by tying it up into a pineapple bun.

Gather your curls into a loose ponytail above your head using a scrunchie. Next, get a scarf, fold it into a triangle, and completely cover your hair with it before tying the ends at the back.

This helps protect your hair from tangles and knots that can form while you sleep.

Gorgeous 3B Hair Right at Your Fingertips

3B hair is beautiful, whether you keep it short or long — especially if you keep it healthy and well-maintained!

That’s why it’s essential to use products specifically made for 3b hair and take steps to manage dryness, combat frizz, and prevent damage.

Once you’ve mastered the art of taking care of your 3b hair, then you can definitely show off your springy, bouncy, lively curls and be the envy of all you meet!

Many people seek ways to help their hair grow as fast as possible. Fortunately, there are a few methods that can help accelerate the process. Embracing a nutrient-rich diet and incorporating regular scalp massages are among the top contenders for fostering rapid hair growth.

However, it's crucial to understand that individual hair growth depends on various factors such as genetics, overall health, and lifestyle choices. This article will explore effective methods to help promote faster hair growth.

Hair Length and Growth Speed: What to Know

Healthy hair usually grows about 0.35 millimeters (mm) every day. That's roughly one-half inch every month and about 6 inches every year. Most adults have between 80,000 and 120,000 hairs on their head that grow like this, and it is normal to shed between 100 and 150 scalp hairs every day.

Hair growth occurs in these four main phases:

  • Anagen phase: This is the active growth phase, in which hair follicles continuously produce new hair. It can last anywhere from two to eight years and determines the length of your hair.
  • Catagen phase: This is a transitional phase, in which hair growth slows down and the hair follicle shrinks. This phase lasts for about two weeks.
  • Telogen phase: This is the resting phase, in which the hair follicle remains dormant. During this phase, the old hair is shed, and new hair grows in its place. It lasts for about three to four months before the cycle repeats itself.
  • Exogen phase: During the exogen phase, the old hairs that have completed their life cycle are shed, making room for new hair growth. This shedding is a natural process and allows for the renewal of the hair follicles.

10 Ways to Help Grow Your Hair Faster

Approximately 9% of hair follicles are in the telogen phase at any given time. However, various factors can influence the transition from the growth phase (anagen) to the resting phase (telogen), such as:

  • Inflammation
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Nutritional imbalances
  • Insufficient sleep

Try a Scalp Massage

A regular scalp massage may effectively stimulate hair growth, resulting in thicker and healthier hair. Research shows that regular scalp massage can increase hair thickness by applying mechanical stress to cells in the scalp's deeper layers.

This stress triggers the activation of dormant hair follicles and encourages the expression of genes responsible for promoting hair growth. Scalp massages also reduce the activity of genes linked to hair loss.

Eat a Nutrient-Rich Diet

Consuming a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein is essential for promoting hair growth. Nutrients like biotin, vitamin E, zinc, and iron support healthy hair follicles and encourage faster growth.

Reduce Stress

High levels of stress can disrupt the hair-growth cycle and lead to hair loss. Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress. Chronic stress can elevate cortisol levels, disrupting the hair growth cycle and leading to conditions like telogen effluvium , in which hair prematurely enters the resting phase and eventually sheds, resulting in hair loss.

Managing stress through relaxation techniques, exercise, and sufficient sleep may help maintain a healthy hair growth rate.

Avoid Tight Hairstyles

Tight hairstyles like ponytails, hair extensions, and tightly braided hair can put stress on the hair follicles and lead to breakage and even hair loss. Opting for looser hairstyles or wearing hair down more often can help promote healthier growth. Consider using gentle styling techniques and minimizing the use of heated styling tools that can prevent unnecessary stress on the hair.

Consider Hair Growth Supplements

In some cases, supplements containing vitamins and minerals specifically targeted for hair growth, such as collagen and amino acids, may be beneficial. However, it's essential to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen.

Use Peppermint Oil

There is evidence to show that peppermint oil may help promote hair growth by increasing blood circulation to the scalp, which delivers vital nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles. In turn, this activates the follicles and encourages the early onset of the anagen phase of the hair cycle.

Bond-Building Treatments

Bond-building treatments, such as Olaplex or similar products, are designed to repair and strengthen damaged hair. While they don't directly stimulate hair follicles or increase the rate of hair growth, they may indirectly support healthier hair growth by improving the overall condition of the hair.

By minimizing breakage and damage, bond-building treatments may preserve the length of the hair strands. This means that as new hair grows from the scalp, it may be less likely to break off prematurely, allowing you to retain length and achieve longer hair over time.

Rogaine (Minoxidil)

Rogaine (minoxidil) is an over-the-counter topical medication primarily used to treat hair loss by promoting hair regrowth in people with certain types of alopecia, such as androgenetic alopecia (male- or female-pattern baldness). It works by stimulating hair follicles to enter the anagen (growth) phase of the hair growth cycle and increasing blood flow to the scalp.

There is no evidence that Rogaine directly affects the rate at which hair grows. However, it may lead to thicker, longer, and more densely packed hair strands over time.

Keep Your Scalp Clean

There is evidence that an unhealthy scalp leads to unhealthy hair. Hair loss may be due to poor scalp health from conditions such as psoriasis , seborrheic dermatitis , and dandruff .

Keeping your scalp clean promotes healthier hair growth by creating an optimal environment for hair follicles.  Additionally, a clean scalp helps reduce the risk of scalp infections, inflammation, and dandruff, which can negatively impact hair health and growth.

Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is used as a treatment to promote hair growth in individuals experiencing hair loss. PRP contains growth factors that may stimulate hair follicles, improve blood flow to the scalp, and encourage the growth of thicker, healthier hair.

While PRP therapy may stimulate dormant hair follicles and potentially enhance the overall quality of hair, it doesn't directly affect the rate at which hair grows. However, PRP therapy supports healthier hair growth and improves the condition of existing hair follicles, which may help hair grow longer over time.

Growing Your Hair Out: Short to Long

Embarking on the journey to grow short hair into longer locks requires patience and a strategic approach. This section will explore effective tips and practices to get you through the grow-out phase and get the longer hair you desire.

Styling Tips

Heat styling can cause damage and breakage, which can disrupt your hair growth goals. Persistent damage to the hair can also escalate to more severe issues such as thinning strands or, in extreme cases, patches of baldness. A few styling tips to help get your hair to a longer length include:

  • Let your hair air-dry.
  • Avoid flat irons and curling irons whenever possible.
  • If you must use heat styling, use the lowest setting.

Other hair styling tips that will reduce damage to the hair and prevent breakage include:

  • Avoid brushing hair when wet.
  • Wear hair loosely instead of pulling it back tightly.
  • Add more time between coloring, perming, or relaxing your hair.
  • Always use conditioner after shampooing.
  • Avoid rubbing shampoos into the length of your hair (only gently massage it into the scalp).
  • Avoid drying your hair by rubbing it into a towel.

With Layers

If you are trying to grow out layers in your hair, you may want to get periodic trims, especially when transitioning from short styles like pixie cuts or bobs to longer hair. Adjusting the layers along the way can help ensure that your hair maintains an appealing shape and style throughout the growing process.

Without these adjustments, you may have unevenness or awkward lengths that compromise your style. Consult with a hairstylist to strategize and customize a plan for each phase of your grow-out journey to aid in the faster and smoother growth of your layered locks.

Regular Trims

Contrary to popular belief, trimming your hair regularly (every 8 to 12 weeks) may actually help grow your hair in the long run. Trimming removes split ends, preventing breakage that can hinder growth. Aim for small trims to maintain health while growing out your hair.

While several hair growth factors are out of our control, eating a nutrient-rich diet, stress management, and gentle hair care practices may help you grow your hair. Understanding the natural hair growth cycle and implementing strategies like scalp massages and peppermint oil may also help stimulate hair follicles, promoting a healthier and quicker growth process.

Additionally, embracing looser hairstyles, reducing heat styling, and incorporating periodic trims can safeguard against breakage, ensuring the overall health of your hair as it grows longer.

While individual results may vary, patience and consistency with these practices may help contribute to a healthier head of hair over time.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll dive into the world of 3b hair, exploring its characteristics, care routines, and styling tips that will help you rock your curls with confidence. Let’s embark on this exciting journey and unlock the secrets to stunning 3b hair!

Understanding 3b Hair

3b hair is a unique and beautiful hair type that falls under the category of curly hair. It is characterized by well-defined curls that range from spiral to ringlet shapes. In this section, we will explore the texture, distinct features, and challenges associated with 3b hair, while highlighting its versatility and beauty.

3b hair growth journey

What is 3b Hair?

Do you know that there is 3 types of hair, categorized as: Type 3A Hair , Type 3B Hair and Type 3C Hair . 3b hair falls under the category of curly hair and is known for its distinct curl pattern. If you have 3b hair, you’ll notice tight, springy curls that range from spiral-like coils to corkscrew shapes. This hair type often possesses a medium to high density, giving your mane a voluminous appearance. With 3b hair, you have the advantage of showcasing curls that effortlessly bounce and captivate attention.

Texture and Curl Pattern of 3b Hair:

3b hair has a medium to tight curl pattern, with curls that spring back when pulled or stretched. The curls are well-defined and have a natural bounce. The diameter of each curl can vary, but overall, the curls are larger compared to other curly hair types.

Distinct Features of 3b Hair:

  • Curl Definition: One of the standout features of 3b hair is its excellent curl definition. The curls are often spiral-shaped and form cohesive clusters or ringlets.
  • Density: 3b hair tends to have a high density, meaning there are a lot of hair strands packed closely together. This high density contributes to the voluminous and full appearance of 3b hair.
  • Porosity: Porosity refers to how well hair retains moisture. 3b hair can exhibit varying levels of porosity, ranging from low to high. Understanding your hair’s porosity can help determine the best moisture retention and hydration practices.

Common Challenges Faced by Individuals with 3b Hair:

  • Frizz: 3b hair is prone to frizz due to its natural texture and the tendency of the curls to lose moisture. Frizz can be exacerbated by environmental factors such as humidity or harsh weather conditions.
  • Dryness: 3b hair has a natural tendency to be dry because the natural oils produced by the scalp have difficulty traveling down the curl shaft. This dryness can lead to dullness and increased vulnerability to breakage.
  • Tangles and Knots: The curls of 3b hair can easily intertwine, leading to tangles and knots. Detangling requires patience and a gentle touch to minimize breakage and damage.
  • Shrinkage: 3b hair has a remarkable ability to shrink in length when it dries or encounters moisture. This shrinkage can sometimes make it challenging to showcase the true length and volume of the hair.

The natural bounce and texture of 3b hair add an element of uniqueness and charm to any style.

Embracing and Celebrating Your Natural Curls:

It’s essential to embrace and celebrate your 3b hair, as it is a remarkable part of your identity. Embracing your natural curls is a journey of self-acceptance and self-love. Appreciate the versatility, texture, and beauty of your hair, and experiment with different styles and techniques to find what suits you best.

The Essential Care Routine for 3b Hair

The Essential Care Routine for 3b Hair

Building a Solid Foundation: Proper Cleansing and Conditioning

Proper cleansing and conditioning are the cornerstones of a healthy hair care routine for 3b hair. In this section, we’ll explore the importance of using sulfate-free and moisturizing shampoos and conditioners, discuss effective cleansing and conditioning techniques, and provide product recommendations for different budgets and hair needs.

Importance of Sulfate-Free and Moisturizing Shampoos and Conditioners

Sulfates, commonly found in many shampoos, can strip away the natural oils from 3b hair, leading to dryness and frizz. Opting for sulfate-free shampoos helps maintain the hair’s natural moisture balance and promotes overall hair health. Look for shampoos that are specifically formulated for curly hair and contain moisturizing ingredients like shea butter, aloe vera, or coconut oil.

Similarly, using a moisturizing conditioner is vital for 3b hair. Look for conditioners that provide deep hydration, nourishment, and help with detangling. Consider products that contain ingredients such as argan oil, jojoba oil, or glycerin. These ingredients help retain moisture, soften the hair, and enhance curl definition.

Effective Cleansing and Conditioning Techniques:

When shampooing your 3b hair, focus on the scalp to remove dirt, excess oil, and product buildup. Gently massage the shampoo into your scalp using your fingertips, but avoid excessive scrubbing to prevent tangling. Let the shampoo run down the length of your hair as you rinse it out.

When conditioning, apply the conditioner from mid-length to ends, focusing on areas prone to dryness. Use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers to gently detangle your hair while the conditioner is still in. This helps minimize breakage and allows the conditioner to distribute evenly. Rinse thoroughly with cool water to seal the hair cuticles and enhance shine.

Product Recommendations:

  • High-End: DevaCurl No-Poo Original Zero Lather Conditioning Cleanser, Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Defrizzing Shampoo, and Conditioner, Bumble and bumble Curl Custom Conditioner.
  • Mid-Range: SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo, Not Your Mother’s Naturals Tahitian Gardenia Flower & Mango Butter Curl Defining Conditioner, Aunt Jackie’s Curl La La Defining Curl Custard.
  • Budget-Friendly: Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Sulfate-Free Cleansing Cream Shampoo, TRESemmé Botanique Curl Hydration Conditioner, Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curl Boosting Mousse.

Remember, finding the right products may require some experimentation, as everyone’s hair is unique. Consider factors such as your hair’s porosity, thickness, and individual preferences when selecting products.

Moisture is Key: Hydrating and Nourishing 3b Hair

Proper hydration and nourishment are essential for maintaining healthy and defined curls in 3b hair. In this section, we’ll explore the significance of moisture, discuss deep conditioning treatments, leave-in conditioners, and moisturizing techniques, and share tips on sealing in moisture and preventing frizz.

Significance of Moisture for 3b Hair:

Moisture is crucial for 3b hair as it helps combat dryness, enhance curl definition, and minimize frizz. Curly hair has a natural tendency to be dry due to the structure of the curls, which inhibits the natural oils from reaching the hair shaft. Adding moisture through proper hydration and nourishing products is key to maintaining healthy and vibrant curls.

Deep Conditioning Treatments:

Deep conditioning treatments are a must for 3b hair to replenish moisture, repair damage, and improve overall hair health. Choose a deep conditioner or hair mask that is specifically formulated for curly hair and provides intense hydration and repair. Apply the treatment to damp hair, focusing on the mid-length to ends.

For added benefit, use a shower cap or apply heat with a hair steamer or warm towel to help the product penetrate deeply. Leave it on for the recommended time and rinse thoroughly for revived and nourished curls.

Leave-In Conditioners and Moisturizing Techniques:

After cleansing and conditioning, apply a leave-in conditioner to damp hair. Leave-in conditioners help retain moisture, detangle the hair, and provide additional nourishment. Work the product through your hair, focusing on the ends and areas prone to dryness.

To further enhance moisture retention, consider the LOC or LCO method . LOC stands for Liquid, Oil, and Cream, while LCO stands for Liquid, Cream, and Oil. Both methods involve layering products to seal in moisture. Start with a water-based leave-in conditioner as the liquid, follow with a natural oil like argan oil or jojoba oil to lock in moisture, and finish with a curl cream or butter to provide extra hydration and definition.

Sealing in Moisture and Preventing Frizz:

To seal in the moisture and prevent frizz, consider applying a natural oil or butter after applying the leave-in conditioner. Focus on the ends of your hair, as they are more prone to dryness and split ends. The oil or butter helps create a protective barrier, sealing in the moisture and reducing frizz throughout the day.

Additionally, avoid using towels to dry your hair vigorously, as this can lead to frizz. Instead, use a microfiber towel or an old T-shirt to gently squeeze out excess water and pat your hair dry. Embrace air drying whenever possible, as it helps maintain the natural shape and texture of your curls.

Experiment with different moisturizing techniques and products to find what works best for your 3b hair. It may take time to discover the perfect balance of moisture and products that suits your hair’s needs.

Taming the Mane: Styling Tips for 3b Hair

Styling 3b hair allows you to enhance and define your curls while showcasing their natural beauty. In this section, we’ll offer styling suggestions, discuss techniques like twist-outs, braid-outs, and wash-and-go styles, and provide insights on the best products and tools for styling 3b hair.

Enhancing and Defining Curls:

To enhance and define your 3b curls, consider using styling products that provide hold, definition, and frizz control. Look for gels, creams, or mousses specifically designed for curly hair. Apply the products to damp hair, working through from roots to ends. Scrunch your hair gently to encourage curl formation and allow it to air dry or use a diffuser attachment on a low heat setting to speed up the drying process while maintaining the integrity of your curls.

Twist-Outs and Braid-Outs:

Twist-outs and braid-outs are popular styling techniques for 3b hair that create defined and elongated curls. To achieve a twist-out, divide your damp hair into sections, apply a twisting cream or butter, and twist each section tightly. Allow the twists to fully dry before unraveling them for bouncy and defined curls.

Similarly, for a braid-out, divide your damp hair into sections, apply a styling cream or butter, and braid each section. Allow the braids to fully dry before unraveling them to reveal beautifully defined waves or curls.

Wash-and-Go Styles:

The wash-and-go style is a quick and easy way to let your 3b curls shine. After cleansing and conditioning your hair, apply a leave-in conditioner and a styling product suitable for wash-and-go styles. Work the products through your damp hair, ensuring even distribution.

Allow your hair to air dry or use a diffuser on a low heat setting. Once dry, gently scrunch your hair to break the cast created by the styling product and enjoy your natural, effortless curls.

Best Products and Tools for Styling 3b Hair:

  • Curl Defining Creams: SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Curls Blueberry Bliss Twist-N-Shout Cream, Camille Rose Naturals Curl Maker.
  • Gels for Hold: Eco Styler Professional Styling Gel, Kinky-Curly Curl Custard, Aunt Jackie’s Flaxseed Don’t Shrink Curling Gel.
  • Diffuser Attachment: DevaCurl DevaFuser, Xtava Black Orchid Large Hair Diffuser, Conair Soft Bonnet Hair Dryer.
  • Wide-Toothed Comb or Denman Brush: These tools help detangle and distribute products through your curls without causing breakage.

Remember to listen to your hair and adjust your styling routine as needed. Not every technique or product will work for everyone, so experiment with different options to find what brings out the best in your 3b hair.

Daily Maintenance and Protection of 3B Hair

Daily Maintenance and Protection of 3B Hair

Gentle Handling: Detangling and Brushing 3b Hair

Detangling and brushing 3b hair requires a gentle approach to prevent damage and minimize breakage. In this section, we’ll explore the importance of gentle detangling, suitable brushes or combs for 3b hair, provide step-by-step instructions on how to detangle without causing damage, and recommend detangling products and tools that work well for 3b hair.

  • Importance of Gentle Detangling:

Detangling 3b hair is crucial for maintaining its health and preventing knots and tangles. However, rough handling and aggressive brushing can lead to breakage and damage the delicate curls. It’s essential to approach detangling with patience, care, and the right tools.

  • Suitable Brushes or Combs:

When it comes to 3b hair, it’s best to opt for wide-toothed combs or brushes with flexible bristles. Wide-toothed combs are gentle on the curls and help detangle without causing excessive pulling or breakage. Brushes with flexible bristles, like the Denman brush, can also be effective for detangling and defining curls.

Avoid using small-toothed combs or brushes with stiff bristles, as they can cause snagging and breakage. It’s also advisable to detangle your hair when it’s wet or damp, as dry hair is more prone to breakage.

  • Step-by-Step Instructions for Detangling:

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to detangle 3b hair without causing damage:

  • Start with damp hair: Apply a leave-in conditioner or a detangling spray to add slip and moisture to your hair.
  • Divide your hair into sections: This makes the detangling process more manageable and prevents unnecessary pulling or tugging.
  • Begin detangling from the ends: Start at the bottom of each section and gently work your way up, removing tangles and knots as you go.
  • Use your fingers or a wide-toothed comb: Finger-detangling allows you to feel for knots and gently separate them. Alternatively, use a wide-toothed comb, starting from the ends and gradually moving upward.
  • Be patient and gentle: Take your time and avoid rushing through the detangling process. If you encounter a particularly stubborn knot, use your fingers to gently separate it or apply a small amount of conditioner or detangling product to help loosen the tangle.
  • Repeat for each section: Detangle one section at a time, ensuring you’re being gentle and minimizing breakage.
  • Style as desired: Once your hair is detangled, you can proceed with your preferred styling routine.
  • Detangling Products and Tools:
  • Leave-in conditioners with slip: SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave-In Conditioner, Kinky-Curly Knot Today Leave-In Conditioner, Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-In Conditioner.
  • Detangling sprays: Aunt Jackie’s Knot On My Watch Instant Detangling Therapy, Mielle Organics Pomegranate & Honey Leave-In Conditioner, Tangle Teezer The Original Detangling Hairbrush.

Remember, detangling is a delicate process, so always be gentle and avoid excessive force or pulling to preserve the health and integrity of your 3b curls.

Shielding Your Curls: Protecting 3b Hair at Night

Protecting your 3b hair at night is essential to maintain its shape, minimize frizz, and prevent breakage. In this section, we’ll discuss the significance of nighttime routines and protective hairstyles for 3b hair, provide tips on using satin or silk pillowcases, bonnets, and wraps to prevent breakage, and suggest hairstyles that maintain the integrity of

3b curls while sleeping.

  • Nighttime Routines and Protective Hairstyles:

Nighttime routines play a vital role in preserving your curls. The following steps can help protect your 3b hair while you sleep:

  • Moisturize your hair: Apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner or moisturizer to keep your hair hydrated overnight.
  • Style your hair in a protective hairstyle: Opt for low-manipulation styles that keep your curls intact while preventing tangles and breakage. Examples include pineapple updos, loose braids, or a satin/silk bonnet or scarf to cover your hair.
  • Satin or Silk Pillowcases:

Using a satin or silk pillowcase is beneficial for 3b hair as it reduces friction and minimizes moisture loss. Unlike cotton pillowcases, which can cause friction and lead to frizz and breakage, satin or silk pillowcases allow your hair to glide smoothly, preserving your curls’ integrity. Additionally, these fabrics help retain moisture and prevent excessive dryness.

  • Bonnets and Wraps:

Another effective way to protect your 3b hair while you sleep is by using a satin or silk bonnet or wrap. These accessories help prevent your curls from rubbing against abrasive surfaces and minimize friction.

Simply gather your hair into a loose bun or pineapple updo, secure it with a satin or silk bonnet, and ensure your curls are tucked away gently. Wrapping your hair with a satin or silk scarf is also a suitable alternative.

By incorporating these nighttime routines and protective hairstyles into your regimen, you can wake up to well-preserved, beautiful curls that require minimal styling in the morning.

  • 3B hair is characterized by medium-tight, springy ringlets that can range from fine to thick in texture and is prone to frizziness and dehydration.
  • Moisturizing 3B hair involves layering products such as leave-in conditioner , curl cream, and lightweight oil, avoiding heat, and incorporating hair moisturizers and sealants rich in oils.
  • Styling techniques for 3B hair include enhancing volume with volumizing products, defining curls with curl cream or mousse, controlling frizz with anti-frizz serums or sprays, and experimenting with different techniques like finger coiling and diffusing.
  • Routine maintenance for 3B hair includes deep conditioning weekly, using leave-in treatments to define curls and reduce frizz, exfoliating and hydrating the scalp, avoiding hair breakage with gentle brushing and detangling methods, and protecting curls with protective styles and minimizing heat exposure.

Understanding 3B Hair

They’re a mix of textures, from fine to thick, and they love to soak up moisture like a sponge in the Sahara.

Now, let’s talk porosity. Your 3B hair porosity could be playing hide and seek with hydration, making it a bit of a challenge to keep those curls quenched. If your hair is low porosity, it’s like a closed door that’s tough to unlock, but with the right leave-in products, you can sneak that moisture in.

Density and elasticity are like the dynamic duo of your hair’s superpowers. 3B hair density can range from a solo act to a full-blown choir, and its elasticity? Well, that’s the spring in its step. It’s what gives your hair the ability to stretch and bounce back like a yoga master.

When it comes to hydration, think of it as the VIP guest at your curl care party. Without it, your curls might throw a frizz-fest, and nobody wants an invite to that. So, embrace those leave-in products, and let’s turn your hair routine into a hydration celebration.

Remember, your 3B hair is unique, and with the right care, it’ll shine brighter than a disco ball.

Moisturizing Tips for 3B Hair

  • Product Layering : Start with a hydrating leave-in conditioner to add moisture. Follow up with a curl cream to define and a lightweight oil to seal in the goodness. Think of it as a thirst-quenching cocktail for your curls.
  • Avoiding Heat : Treat your hair like a no-heat zone. Excessive heat can strip away moisture faster than a sponge in the Sahara. Embrace air-drying or use a diffuser on a cool setting if you must.
  • Lightweight Products : Your hair isn’t a fan of heavyweights. Opt for lightweight products that won’t weigh down your curls but will still provide the hydration they crave. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and fatty acids that are like a hydrating hug for your strands.

Incorporate hair moisturizers and sealants that are rich in hair-loving oils to keep your curls bouncy and full of life.

Styling Techniques

To achieve the perfect balance of volume enhancement, curl definition, and frizz control, mastering the use of styling tools and product layering is key. Your daily hair regimen plays a crucial role in maintaining those gorgeous curls.

From selecting the best curl products to fine-tuning your styling techniques, every step contributes to a flawless finish. Embrace the journey of discovering the best products and techniques that suit your hair, creating a personalized styling routine that brings out the best in your 3B curls.

Recommended Haircuts

  • Face Framing Layers : These are your secret weapon for that ‘just walked out of a salon’ vibe. They’ll give your curls life and movement, making your face the star of the show.
  • Tapered Nape : If you’re feeling a bit daring, a tapered nape can add a touch of sophistication and edge. It’s like saying, I’m all business at the front and a party at the back!
  • Round Layers : Think of these as the fairy godmother for your 3b hair. They’ll pump up the volume and let each curl spring into action, creating a look that’s as full of life as you are.

Routine Maintenance

Think of your hair care routine as a gourmet meal for your curls—only the best ingredients will do.

First off, your curls are like delicate flowers; they thrive on moisture. Incorporate deep conditioning into your weekly routine to quench their thirst. Look for products rich in hydrating ingredients like shea butter or coconut oil.

And remember, a little product goes a long way—too much, and you’ll weigh down those lively spirals.

When it comes to daily styling, leave-in treatments are your best friend. They’re like the gentle hug your curls need to stay defined and frizz-free. Opt for lightweight formulas that won’t leave your hair feeling greasy or heavy.

Now, let’s talk scalp care. A healthy scalp equals healthy hair. Gentle exfoliation and hydration are key. Consider a scalp massage with a nourishing oil once a week to stimulate circulation and promote growth.

Lastly, be mindful of hair breakage. Avoid harsh brushing and tight hairstyles. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to detangle gently, starting from the ends and working your way up.

By following these maintenance tips, you’ll ensure your 3B curls stay hydrated, defined, and dazzling. Remember, every curl has its own personality; embrace it, and let your unique spirals shine.

Addressing Common Challenges

But fear not, with a few tricks up your sleeve, you’ll be turning heads with your defined, bouncy curls in no time.

  • Deep Conditioning : Make it a spa day for your hair at least once a week. A good deep conditioner can be a game-changer, penetrating those thirsty strands and quenching their dryness.
  • Hair Masks : Don’t skimp on these! Slather on a hair mask and let it work its magic. It’s like a tall drink of water on a scorching day for your curls.
  • Protective Styling : Tuck those curls away in styles that shield them from the elements. It’s like wrapping your hair in a cozy blanket.
  • Product Recommendations : Keep an eye out for products that love your hair type . It’s like finding a soulmate for your strands.
  • Hair Porosity : Know your porosity like the back of your hand. It’s the secret map to unlocking the full potential of your hair care products .

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

To determine if your hair is low porosity, perform the water test: drop a clean strand into water.

For 3B low porosity hair , focus on hydration without heaviness. Think lightweight, moisture-rich products and regular deep conditioning without the buildup.

Like a knight armoring up for battle, protecting your 3B curls at night is crucial to keep the frizz and tangles at bay.

Imagine wrapping your hair in a satin or silk bonnet as your shield against the rough night ahead. This simple step can be a game-changer, ensuring you wake up with your curls as bouncy and defined as they were the night before.

Not only does it reduce friction, but it also keeps your hair moisturized, preventing those dreaded morning tangles.

Yes, diet and supplements can impact the health and texture of your 3B hair.

Nutrient-rich foods and hydration are key to maintaining strong, luscious curls, so don’t skimp on your greens or water intake.

As a trichologist and licensed cosmetologist, I’d say, An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Climate and weather can wreak havoc on 3B hair, making it prone to dryness, frizz, and damage.

To shield your curls from these environmental factors, always moisturize and hydrate your hair with products rich in antioxidants and natural oils. Use protective styles to minimize exposure and consider a silk scarf or hat when outdoors to protect against UV rays and pollution.

Additionally, a humidifier can help maintain moisture levels indoors, especially in dry climates.

To refresh 3B curls on non-wash days, lightly mist your hair with water or a curl refresher spray.

Gently scrunch to revive the bounce and apply a light oil or serum to seal in moisture and reduce frizz.

Imagine Sarah, who struggled with her 3B curls for years, battling frizz and dryness until she discovered the right balance of moisture, styling, and maintenance. Her transformation is a testament to the power of understanding and nurturing your unique hair type.

Your 3B hair, with its medium-tight ringlets, isn’t just hair; it’s a statement of your natural beauty and identity. By following the tips outlined, from moisturizing to routine trims, you’re not just caring for your hair; you’re embracing its full potential.

Common mistakes to avoid while taking care of 3b Hair

Taking care of 3b hair can be challenging, requiring special attention and care. But there are some everyday things that people need to correct. You should always start with using 3b low porosity hair products. Here are some mistakes to avoid while taking care of 3b hair:

Overwashing:

One of the biggest mistakes people make is overwashing their hair. This can strip the natural oils from the hair. Moreover, it leads to dryness, breakage, and frizz. Instead, wash your hair once or twice weekly with a sulfate-free shampoo. It will keep your hair clean without drying it out.

Skipping Conditioner:

Another mistake people make is skipping conditioners. Conditioner is essential for 3b hair. It helps to hydrate and detangle the hair, making it easier to style. Make sure to use a moisturizing conditioner after shampooing. Thus, it will keep your hair soft and manageable.

Using Heat Tools Too Often:

Heat tools like flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers can damage 3b hair. Thus, it will lead to breakage and split ends. Try to limit your use of heat tools and opt for air-drying or diffusing instead.

Using the Wrong Hair Products:

The wrong hair products can also lead to dryness, breakage, and frizz. Avoid products that contain sulfates, silicones, and alcohol, as these can dry out your hair. Instead, use products specifically designed for 3b hair, such as the Controlled Chaos line.

Neglecting Regular Trims:

Refraining from following regular trims is a common mistake. Also, it can lead to split ends, breakage, and stunted hair growth. Regular trims every 6-8 weeks are vital to keep your hair healthy and promote growth.

In short, taking care of 3b hair requires some extra attention and care. Also, you should always start with using 3a high porosity hair products. But avoiding these common mistakes and using the right products can keep your hair healthy, shiny, and manageable.

Style your 3B hair

Styling 3B hair can be challenging, but you can achieve beautiful and defined curls with the proper techniques and products. Here are some tips for styling your 3B hair:

Start with Clean Hair:

It's essential to start with clean hair, so wash it with a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. On the other hand, styling without cleaning your scalp will ruin its texture. Therefore, it is essential to clean your scalp first.

Apply a Leave-In Conditioner:

After washing your hair, apply a leave-in conditioner to help hydrate and detangle your curls. You should complete all of your steps in it.

Use a Curl Enhancing Product:

Apply a curl-enhancing product, such as a curl cream or gel. You should use it on your damp hair to help define your curls and reduce frizz.

Use a Diffuser:

Use a diffuser attachment on your hair dryer to help dry your hair without causing frizz. To use a diffuser, place a section of hair in the diffuser. Gently lift it towards your scalp while diffusing on low heat.

Pineapple Your Hair at Night:

To preserve your curls overnight, pineapple your hair by gathering it at the top of your head and securing it with a scrunchie or hair tie.

Refresh Your Curls:

Use a water-based spray or a leave-in conditioner to refresh your curls between washes. It will help to revive your curls and reduce frizz.

My Curly Hair Transformation: A Personal Journey Through Color

My Curly Hair Transformation: A Personal Journey Through Color

I’ve always believed that changing our hair color is one of the many ways we women express ourselves, showcasing our personality and current mood through the spectrum of colors we choose. My journey with my curly hair, filled with triumphs and setbacks, is a testament to this adventurous spirit.

Starting with tentative blonde highlights, moving on to a boldly into the realm of reds, and eventually returning to my natural black, each phase of my hair color adventure has taught me invaluable lessons. It’s been a path of self-discovery, resilience, and developing a deeper connection with my curls.

This narrative isn’t just about switching hues; it’s about embracing every aspect of our hair’s potential and the profound insights gained along the way. Along this colorful path, I’ve discovered hair products that have become essential allies, guiding me toward healthier, happier curls.

Table of contents

The blonde ambition, the bold move to red, return to blonde and the ultimate price, embracing natural black, product recommendations through the journey, lessons learned.

My Curly Hair Transformation: A Personal Journey Through Color

My curly hair journey began in 2016, motivated by the desire to heal my hair from the extensive damage caused by years of chemical treatments and heat styling. Determined to revive what was left of my hair, I embraced a healthier hair care regimen.

Just four months into this new journey, I couldn’t resist the temptation to add color to my hair. Aware of the potential risks coloring posed to my delicate curls, I sought a solution to minimize damage. This led me to discover Olaplex, a product known for preserving hair’s structural integrity during coloring. I made it a point to discuss using Olaplex with my stylist, emphasizing its importance in my hair treatment plan.

I committed to a rigorous routine to support my hair’s health further and ensure a positive outcome from the coloring process. This included weekly deep conditioning to moisturize and nourish my hair deeply and protein treatments designed to strengthen and repair any potential damage caused by coloring. Together, these steps formed a comprehensive strategy to achieve a successful hair transformation, balancing the desire for new hair color with the need to maintain healthy, resilient curls. By the following year, my efforts had paid off, and my hair’s health was fully restored, as seen in the photo below.

My Curly Hair Transformation: A Personal Journey Through Color

However, I hadn’t realized that my stylist planned to use a stronger bleach for this next step. This led to significant damage to my curls, making them brittle, prone to breakage, and excessively dry. Although the photo below captures the visible damage—noticeably stretched-out curls—it fails to convey the full extent of the dryness. My hair’s texture had deteriorated to the point where it felt like straw, devoid of moisture and elasticity, illustrating a cautionary tale about the potential risks of aggressive bleaching.

My Curly Hair Transformation: A Personal Journey Through Color

This challenging setback was undeniably devastating, yet it was a powerful catalyst for me to reevaluate and strengthen my approach to hair care. In response to the damage, I doubled my commitment to returning my hair to health. It was then time to upgrade my routine to include deep conditioning sessions twice weekly to replenish and hydrate my curls more intensely. I also maintained the regimen of regular protein treatments to rebuild and fortify my hair’s structure.

In my quest for solutions, I incorporated three essential products into my regimen with a fresh perspective. First, I began using  Righteous Roots Oils  as a pre-poo treatment. While this product wasn’t new to me, applying it before shampooing marked a novel and effective method in my routine. It provided my hair with essential nutrients and extra protection during washing.

Additionally, I discovered the  Roux Porosity Control Corrector and Conditioner , which specifically targeted my hair’s extreme dryness by improving its ability to retain moisture. Lastly, I explored the traditional practice of rice water rinses, which are renowned for their hair-strengthening properties. Together, these steps were instrumental in reviving my curls (as seen in the photo below), demonstrating the importance of adaptability and targeted care in overcoming hair health obstacles.

This experience taught me the importance of clear communication with my hairstylist, highlighting how crucial it is to discuss and understand every product and technique used in my hair care process.

My Curly Hair Transformation: A Personal Journey Through Color

In 2019, the call for change whispered once more, guiding me toward the vibrant allure of red. The transition was smooth, with no initial damage to report. However, maintaining red hair proved to be its own labyrinth.  Toner  became my constant companion, though it was an inconsistent relationship. Despite my efforts, the red hues faded, never returning to their original luster.

This chapter taught me the necessity of understanding the maintenance landscape before diving into a new color. Research became my beacon, guiding me through the complexities of red hair upkeep.

Relocating to a new city led to a chance encounter at the gym with a woman whose blonde, curly hair was the vibrant shade I had been dreaming of. This serendipitous meeting reignited my desire for blonde highlights, prompting me to pursue that perfect shade again. Initially, I was thrilled with the results, but soon, I longed for a more consistent, all-over blonde look.

Motivated by the stunning blonde curls of a woman I met at the gym, I sought out her colorist to achieve a similar vibrant shade. The colorist proposed using distinct bleaching formulas to address my naturally black hair and the previously highlighted sections. The goal was to achieve a consistent, all-over blonde hue.

Unfortunately, this intricate plan resulted in significant and unforeseen negative consequences. A few months later, my hair began to fall out in large quantities, an alarming situation that proved resistant to my extensive care regimen. Despite my diligent use of protein treatments, deep conditioning, and K18 Leave-In Hair Treatment—a product I chose based on its clinical reputation for repairing bleach-damaged hair—it seemed my hair’s condition had deteriorated beyond the point of repair by these methods. This experience underscored that some damage might be too extensive for even the most highly recommended products to mitigate.

This unfortunate turn of events taught me a valuable lesson about the potential hazards of intensive chemical processing. It underscored the necessity of exercising caution and restraint in hair coloring endeavors. Additionally, I realized that I had overlooked my initial instincts about the colorist’s method for lightening my hair. Deep down, I sensed this approach might not suit my hair’s condition, so I proceeded. This served as a reminder of the importance of listening to one’s intuition, especially regarding decisions affecting our hair’s health. As it turned out, my hair was simply unprepared for such a drastic change.

My Curly Hair Transformation: A Personal Journey Through Color

Exhausted by the color carousel, I’ve returned to my roots—figuratively and literally. Transitioning to my natural black hair symbolizes a return to simplicity and health.

In the image, you can see the current state of my hair as I’m transitioning from blonde back to my natural black. The faded blonde ends are growing out, while my natural black color is reasserting itself from the roots. It’s a challenging process that doesn’t always look as graceful as I’d like, but I’m committed to avoiding the “big chop.” Instead, I’ve let the black curls grow longer and trim off the blonde ends when I’ve achieved a length that satisfies me. This phase of my hair journey may not be picture-perfect, but it reflects patience and my personal growth.

Now, on to the second aspect of my journey:

The transformation of my hair’s porosity from high to low has been an unexpected twist, prompting me to rethink my products. I’ve turned to a new lineup that includes Righteous Roots Leave-In Conditioner, Bounce Curl Leave-In Conditioner, and Jessicurl products, all of which have proven incredibly effective. These products have seamlessly integrated into my hair care routine, addressing the unique needs of my changing hair texture and porosity. It’s been like reconnecting with an old friend who has changed over time and relearning what they like and dislike. Adapting to these changes has not only improved the health of my curls but also deepened my understanding and appreciation for them as they evolve.

Throughout this journey, several products have stood out for their restorative and nurturing properties:

1. Olaplex No. 3 : A beacon during my initial foray into blonde, safeguarding my hair’s integrity.

2. Righteous Roots Oils : A savior in the aftermath of over-bleaching, fostering recovery.

3. Roux Porosity Control Corrector and Conditioner : Key in managing my hair’s porosity post-damage.

4.  Righteous Roots Leave-In Conditioner ,  Bounce Curl Leave-In Conditioner , and  Jessicurl Products  have become indispensable in my routine. Together, they create a powerhouse trio that deeply nourishes my natural curls. Each product serves a distinct purpose, addressing the specific needs and phases of my hair’s health journey. Together, they provide a well-rounded regimen that ensures my curls receive the holistic care and attention they deserve.

This journey has been more than just a series of color changes—it’s been a profound learning experience. My key takeaways have been the importance of gradual transitions, the necessity of ongoing communication with stylists, and the need for a tailored hair care regimen . Each color chapter has imparted wisdom, sometimes learned through hardship but always leading to growth.

Reflecting on this journey, it’s clear that the path to healthy, vibrant curls is both complex and rewarding. It requires patience, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to understanding one’s hair. My story, punctuated by triumphs and tribulations, serves as a guide for those navigating the colorful world of curly hair. It reminds us that while the journey may be fraught with challenges, the destination—a head full of healthy, happy curls—is worth every step.

Whether you have yet to start your loc journey or are a few years in, you’ve undoubtedly wondered, “what will my locs look like in the future?” At what point will you reach your “goal length?” Maybe even “Should my locs be budding yet?” Because everyone’s journey is different, there is no formula for where you’ll be in the future. But take a look to get inspired and see the possibilities with these yearly comparison loc journey photos.

Table of Contents

Year 1 & under loc journey photos, year 2 loc journey photos, year 3 loc journey photos, year 4 loc journey photos, year 5 & over loc journey photos.

That first year of locing your hair is filled with anticipation and wonder. Moreover, in your first year of locing, your hair will undergo many changes. You may experience a lot of shrinkage to the point where you think your hair is shorter than the beginning of the process! However, this is completely normal. During this stage, your locs will also start to bud and form baby locs.

2 Year Loc Journey

At three years in your locs journey, your hair is fully matured. If you started with under 2-3 inches of hair, your locs are likely shoulder length by now. You may start to notice some lighter colored locs. No worries. If so, you’re likely getting some natural hair dye by the sun.

Year 3 Loc Journey

At 4 years locd you’ve probably hit your stride. You’ll be seeing increased growth from year 3. At this point, you’ve probably experimented with different care routines and styles. Maybe you’ve even considered cutting your locs . However, at four years in, there is still much more to come if you continue your journey.

4 Year Loc Journey

Over half a decade locd!

At this point, you’ve gone through a lot of changes with your locs. You’ve probably dealt with (and hopefully conquered) build up as well as developed good routines. What’s next from here is just a continuation of the journey.

  • 3B – This hair type consists of bouncy, defined ringlets about the size of a pointer finger.

There are four main cardinal guidelines to caring for 3B curls to ensure they look their best for their longest:

You can go about 3B hair styling in a few different ways.

  • Keep your hair covered for at least 20 minutes

With a little dedicated practice, you'll understand how to style your hair without thinking about it and give your curls the chance to dance they’re aching for.
