Just B Divorced with Bethenny Frankel
Just B Divorced is the deconstruction of a decade long divorce. Ten years after her divorce nightmare began, Bethenny Frankel is ready to tell her story. Bethenny is an unintentional expert on divorce. The time has finally come for her to share her story, her wisdom (heartache and pain) about this topic that most of us know all too well. This series is a cautionary tale for anyone who has been, is or will ever be in a relationship. This is a must listen for anyone and everyone going through it. If you’re on the verge of divorce or a breakup, or on the path to love, the wisdom you will gain could prevent years of grief and suffering. NEWS RELEASE
San Diego Zoo Safari Park Announces Elephant Valley, Largest Transformative Project in 50-year History
Wildlife Conservation Leader Will Bring Guests Closer to Elephants Through New Immersive Experience
SAN DIEGO (Aug. 10, 2023) – San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has announced construction is officially underway on the largest and most transformative project in the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s 50-year history. The all-new Denny Sanford Elephant Valley will reimagine the heart of the Safari Park, turning the current elephant environment into a dynamic savanna and a place of exploration. Elephant Valley will give guests of all ages the opportunity to connect with elephants like never before, encouraging greater empathy, understanding, and appreciation of this majestic species—and igniting a passion for wildlife.
“We are thrilled to announce Denny Sanford Elephant Valley—a first-of-its-kind immersive experience for visitors, to further connect the vital work happening here in San Diego to the collaborative elephant conservation initiatives we support in the field,” said Paul A. Baribault, president and chief executive officer, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. “Elephant Valley could not be achieved without the incredible community, donors, members and allies who support us and make all our conservation work possible with partners around the world.”
Surrounded by elephants on multiple sides, including from below via an overhead walkway with views of the herd passing through, guests will learn about the crucial role elephants have as ecosystem engineers, and about their intricate social dynamics. Elephant Valley will provide guests with new insight into the role San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance pursues as a leader in wildlife conservation. It will highlight the organization’s world-changing partners and celebrate the vibrant cultures and local communities where people and elephants coexist.
At the center of the guest experience in Elephant Valley is a two-story lodge, inspired by the destinations frequented by travelers while on safari in Africa. This gathering place will provide opportunities to learn from educators about the awe-inspiring wildlife of the region, while witnessing elephants wade in expansive watering holes. The rich plant life in Elephant Valley has been carefully curated by a team of expert horticulturists and arborists to authentically reflect the sights, sounds and smells of the African grasslands. The vast new habitat will provide enhanced experiences for the herd of elephants by introducing several innovative features that align with seasonal variations to closely replicate the African savanna year-round.
“As magnificent as elephants are, their future is equally fragile,” said Lisa Peterson, executive director, San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “We are honored to take millions of wildlife allies on a journey into the life of elephants, where they will learn about the positive impact everyone can have, and share in our hope for elephants worldwide. Elephant Valley will be a place where curiosity turns into discovery—where anyone from ages 1 to 100 will experience breathtaking moments of wonder in nature. Our hope is that the defining memories you make here stay with you for a lifetime.”
The effects of climate change, challenges to human-wildlife coexistence, habitat loss and poaching are taking a toll on elephant populations. African savanna elephants are currently listed as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. Conserving African elephants has long been a top priority for San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. Working closely with Save the Elephants, The Nature Conservancy, Northern Rangelands Trust, Kenya Wildlife Service and Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Kenya. Scientific studies conducted in both Africa and with the elephant herds at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, provide a unique opportunity to increase the understanding of the species, and help develop additional conservation solutions. Increasing knowledge of the complexity of elephant social behaviors and the understanding of their overall health needs has given San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and its partners valuable insight into what successful conservation outcomes look like for elephants.
“Elephants across Africa are facing immense challenges, which require all of us to collaborate and find sustainable conservation solutions for elephants and people,” explained Nadine Lamberski, DVM, chief conservation and wildlife health officer, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. “We are eager to witness the impact Elephant Valley will have on our continued elephant conservation efforts globally.”
Elephant Valley is funded by thousands of generous donors and longtime San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance supporter Denny Sanford. In addition to Elephant Valley, Sanford was the lead donor for Wildlife Explorers Basecamp at the San Diego Zoo, and for the educational television programing of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Explorers, provided at hundreds of children’s hospitals, Ronald McDonald Houses and other facilities across the globe. Elephant Valley is expected to be completed in 2025. For more information and to make a donation, visit sdzsafaripark.org/elephantvalley .

About Dan Kainen
Dan Kainen is an artist, designer, and inventor, living in New York City. Most recently, he is the creator of New York Times best-selling series of Photicular Books (see home pager) published by Workman Publishing, on sale worldwide. The basis for "Safari" is The Motion Viewer, the third patent, and first product in the field of integrated imaging from Dan. After attending Pratt Institute (BFA Painting), Dan started his design career with fabric silk-screen designs for clients such as Calvin Klein from his studio in Soho. Later he created laser light shows and art pieces for clubs and rock bands, including a laser sculpture for New York, New York Discotheque, and for performance artists such as Sharon Wybrants. To further his technological expertise, he worked as an applications engineer doing precision motion control, electro-optics and laser-optical systems for an aerospace subcontracting company. He returned to the design world doing lighting design, using his increased technical knowledge to create innovative fixtures. He continued with lighting design, fabrication and consultation for commercial, residential and architectural applications and is especially well known for his restaurant lighting in New York, including a number of the Blue Ribbon restaurants. His experiments with integrated imaging began in 1994. Since then he has been studying integrated photography, both film and digital, to create both 3D and animated images, advancing the state of the art. Dan also draws, paints, writes songs, and travels to see art, architecture, and natural wonders.
In More Detail
Dan was born, and grew up in Washington DC, son of a New York School painter, Jacob Kainen, who had moved to DC in the early 40's to become curator of graphic arts at the Smithsonian Institution, and, juggling the two careers of artist and scholar, became a major force behind the creation of the DC art scene. Dan's paternal grandfather was a Russian emigrant, Joseph Kainen, a tool and die maker and an inventor (among his inventions is the "Dead Man's Break," that shuts down a train if the engineer does not check in at regular time periods). Dan's brother, Paul, is a mathematician, and author of "The Four Color Problem," the definitive work on that classic theorem.
Dan has won various awards at local art fairs, and an honorable mention at a Corcoran Biennial Show, and took painting classes at both The Corcoran School of Art, and American University, and studied with his father, before attending Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn, and graduating with a BFA in painting. At Pratt, Dan also took a keen interest in industrial design, and began inventing things, such as a unique cardboard furniture design - complete with a machine to manufacture it. This passion for inventing grew, and became mixed with entrepreneurship in the following decades. He built an automated printing machine for his own Soho screen-printing shop, which included clients such as Calvin Klein; Dan became fascinated with lasers and after working for a light show company started his own, creating original electronic and motorized optical equipment to perform laser light shows. He created a laser-sculpture for New York, New York Disco, and did shows for rock bands, concerts, and performance artists, such as Sharon Wybrants, in whose performance, electronic music was created by dancers, moving through audio-linked laser beams.
Dan's expertise in optics and mechanics was honed to a high degree when he worked with an aerospace subcontractor, as an applications engineer, acting in an advisory capacity to many cutting-edge laboratories around the nation in the field of electro-optics and ultra-precision (sub-light wave) motion control. Among Dan's clients were Bell Laboratories (super-short pulse laser spectroscopy), North American Rockwell (hybrid chip facility), and NASA Houston (Shuttle soft docking project). After a couple of years of intense technical work, Dan missed the design world and wondered if there were a way to combine technology and art. He studied with Joseph Burns, a holographic pioneer in the field of embossed holography, and Dan became familiar with the principles of three-dimensional imaging, both holographic and photographic (stereo photography). He also studied photicular (integrated, or lenticular) imaging, and realized that there was a lot of opportunity for creative work. Holography had many advantages, and was intriguing, but photicular offered more natural, photographic color, and seemed more suited to capturing nature.
At the same time he was studying holography and photicular imaging, Dan began designing lighting fixtures, which he saw as another avenue to blend his technical expertise with his design skills. From then until the present, Dan has created custom lighting fixtures for residential, commercial, and architectural applications, while pursuing his photicular images and obtaining three patents in that field. His lighting fixture designs can be seen in private and commercial spaces and many New York restaurants, including the various Blue Ribbon Restaurants, Cafe Felix, and Bar Six, as well as "The Room" bars in NY, Miami, and LA; in the Holocaust Museum and the Museum for Women in the Arts, in Washington, DC. Also, the (diet Dr) Atkins' Clinic, and Dr Atkins' home on Sutton Place, NY, both of which have extensive art collections.
While he still invents and designs lighting, for the past several years or more, Dan has concentrated on his photicular imaging. The recent publication of Safari: A Photicular Book, is based on Dan's patented Photicular Motion Viewer , which allows any number of interchangeable images, printed on a paper, postcard-sized image, to be inserted into it, whereupon they come to life in fluid, film-like motion.
