“At the end of the day, we want to know your feedback on if this worked well for you, and we will take notes and mold this for you. Look at this as a frequent flier miles type of program – with Avenged Sevenfold, we will be breaking these passes into “tiers” over time and rewarding the people who have been participating the most in our A7X ecosystem (with merchandise, listening habits, music consumption, live events, and other metrics.). ”

Setlist, Photos + Video – Avenged Sevenfold Debut Several Live Songs at ‘Life is But a Dream’ Tour Kickoff

Avenged Sevenfold ’s latest studio LP, Life is But a Dream… , will be remembered as one of 2023’s most divisive metal albums . Obviously, that didn’t stop them from premiering several songs from it at the kickoff show of their current North American tour this past Friday (June 9) at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California.

Naturally, they began with album opener “Game Over,” which they first brought to the stage about a month ago in Las Vegas. Afterward, they debuted the second song from the record – “Mattel” – before moving onto previously played album cuts such as “ We Love You ” and “ Nobody .”

In fact, it wasn’t until the encore that they introduced more new material from Life is But a Dream… , and interestingly, they went for the entire penultimate suite of “G,” “(O)rdinary” and “(D)eath”!

Along the way, they also performed some past singles: “Afterlife,” “Hail to the King,” “Buried Alive,” “Nightmare” and “Bat Country.” Plus, they pulled out fan favorite “A Little Piece of Heaven”; dedicated “So Far Away” to late member Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan ; played “The Stage” for the first time since 2018; and included a sample of the original chorus during the outro of “Unholy Confessions.”

Clearly, the show offered a fairly wide-ranging overview of their catalog amidst honoring their newest collection.

Earlier this month (June 2), guitarist Zacky Vengeance joined Loudwire Nights and spoke in-depth about creating Life is But a Dream… (among other things). Of course, we also shared some things that we love most about the new LP , including how different it is and the “epic” nature of the aforementioned suite.

So, were you at the tour kickoff? How are you feeling about Life  is But a Dream… ? Let us know!

Also, you can check out Avenged Sevenfold’s full setlist from the Kia forum – as well as photos and fan-shot videos – below.

AVENGED SEVENFOLD's first show of 2024: See video and setlist

After debuting their first-ever VR concert late last month, Avenged Sevenfold played their first real-world show of 2024 last night (March 6th) in Buffalo, New York.

It kicked off the latest leg of their Life Is but a Dream... tour, and the setlist included some pretty significant tweaks compared to what the Deathbat crew were delivering to fans in 2023.

For starters, The Stage cut "Roman Sky" and the Life Is but a Dream... track "Cosmic" (one of our readers' favorite songs of 2023 ) each received their live debuts. But A7X also pulled out some oldies — including one track that they haven't played in 18 years!

They ripped through "Shepherd of Fire" for the first time since 2018, and Nightmare closer "Save Me" for the first time since 2011 — marking the first time drummer Brooks Wackerman (who joined in 2015) has ever played the cut live.

However, the real gem of the night was "Blinded in Chains," the savagely fast City of Evil track that Avenged Sevenfold haven't pulled out since 2006!

Otherwise, the setlist included the heavy hitters A7X fans come to expect from the band, with an emphasis on songs from Life Is but a Dream ...., as is to be expected on this tour.

Avenged Sevenfold North American Tour Part 2 (Concert Review)

From+his+seat%2C+Gary+watched+one+of+his+favorite+bands%2C+Avenged+Sevenfold%2C+perform+live+in+Texas.+

“Life Is But a Dream” is the perfect way to describe my experience with the Avenged Sevenfold North American Tour Part 2. The concert was at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, TX Sunday, Oct. 15. Avenged Sevenfold also had heavy metal rock band Falling In Reverse on tour with them.

Since I was in middle school, I was always fascinated by Avenged Sevenfold and their heavy metal sound. Their lead guitarist Synester Gates and rhythm guitarist Zachy Vengeance have put together some of the best guitar solos I have ever heard and probably ever will hear. Lead singer M. Shadows has a vocal range going from low to high that not many people can replicate much less perform at his level. The current drummer for their band Brooks Wackerman is also someone to not take lightly as he can tear up the drums with the best drummers currently out there.

All these factors led my brother, a few close friends, and I to go out and purchase tickets to attend their concert. The five of us made it to Dickies Arena at 5 p.m., where we waited in a long line and had plenty of stairs to walk. Normally, the stairs would be a minor inconvenience, but one of my friends had broken his foot a couple of weeks ago and had to use crutches to walk. Nonetheless, we made it up all of the stairs, made it to our seats, and began watching the concert.

The show was supposed to begin at 6:30 p.m. but we didn’t see our first performance until 7 p.m. The band that opened for Avenged Sevenfold and Falling In Reverse was a heavy metal group called Kim Dracula. The performance from Kim Dracula was intriguing, to say the least. I only knew one of the songs they performed, which was a cover of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi,” and it went to the tune of the Call of Duty Black Ops 2 Zombies theme song. This song was the one I enjoyed the most from them, and I think the crowd would agree with that statement.

I also found Kim Dracula’s stage presence very amusing and wonder how much of their budget goes into mic stands. The lead singer of Kim Dracula, Samuel Ellings, would slam the mic stand into the floor while performing and I counted five different mic stands that he broke during their set. Ellings also had a chainsaw on stage and proceeded to run around the stage while revving it to prepare for one of their songs. They had an entertaining opening for the show, but they didn’t gravitate the same energy everyone had for Falling In Reverse and Avenged Sevenfold.

After a short intermission, Falling In Reverse took the stage and their opener set the tone for how a heavy metal rock show should be. They started with “ZOMBIFIED,” and you could say everyone was electrified by their performance. I wasn’t fond of Falling In Reverse, as I vaguely knew a couple of their songs, but this concert has made me a huge fan of them.

Falling In Reverse also performed some of their well-known songs like “The Drug In Me Is You,” “Voices In My Head,” and my favorite song by them, “Popular Monster.” I had two favorite moments from their session which both include their lead singer Ronnie Radke and his outstanding stage presence.

Right after their performance of “The Drug In Me Is You,” Radke and the band began playing a heavy metal tone. Radke started telling the crowd in the pit to split into two sides and told the fans in the stands to start pumping their arms. He was hinting at starting a huge mosh pit among the standing fans, and everyone was prepared to watch it happen. As Radke counted down from three, the heavy metal tone went away, and they started playing their cover of “All-Star” by Smash Mouth. The song caused the mosh pit to fade away and brought everyone together for the all-time classic.

My second favorite moment from their set came from Radke’s words himself. In recent months, Radke has faced a lot of controversy over social media and the band has been outspoken about cancel culture and its potential effects on everyone. During the middle of their set, Radke spoke for a few minutes on how appreciative he was of M. Shadows for keeping their band on tour amid the controversy happening, but also how grateful he was for being on tour with Avenged Sevenfold.

“I grew up listening to Avenged Sevenfold, I was inspired by them, and the band is sick, and they have so many good songs.” Radke said.

As a fan, I think most would resonate with Radke’s description of Avenged Sevenfold and it was a feel-good moment for everyone. I didn’t know much about Falling In Reverse before this concert, as I only knew a couple of their songs. However, their performance and attitude at the concert made me a fan of their music and they will be in my playlist for the foreseeable future.

a7x tour part 2

After hearing from Kim Dracula and Falling In Reverse, my adrenaline was pumping more than ever. The moment I had waited days, months, and years was about to happen as “Game Over” began to play. Watching Avenged Sevenfold for the first time live gave me a euphoric feeling. I had felt an intense feeling of happiness that I did not realize was even possible, and I thoroughly loved their portion of the show.

Avenged Sevenfold played a few songs from their new album and most of their well-known songs during their set. I did like all the songs they performed, but my favorites from the show were “Buried Alive,” “So Far Away,” “Bat Country,” and “A Little Piece of Heaven.”

I was the most surprised by the crowd response when the band began playing “Buried Alive.” I began listening to this song this year and have fallen in love with its melody and lyrics. This could be felt through the crowd as well because I heard the crowd singing most of the song with Shadows. You could say this song felt “real as ever” when hearing Shadows perform it.

Every Avenged Sevenfold fan holds “So Far Away” near and dear to their hearts just like the band members do. This song was written as a memorial to the late James “The Rev” Sullivan who was the band’s original drummer until 2009. Before performing the song, Shadows spoke to the audience and recommended that everyone should enjoy their lives while they can.

“I’m pretty dang sure we have one chance at this thing and time goes by as we sit there fucking bored and we don’t do shit and one day we turn 80 years old and we look back and wonder what the fuck happened and why didn’t we do x.y, and z,” Shadows explained.

Shortly after this, “So Far Away” began to play and everyone turned on their phone lights. The sight was similar to looking up at the night sky and seeing all of the white stars joined together. It was truly magical, and the song not only shows a memorial to “The Rev”, but also all of the loved ones we have lost in this life.

When Avenged Sevenfold started to play “Bat Country,” the little kid inside of me started freaking out. This was one of the first songs I ever heard from the band, and it instantly became one of my favorites to listen to. When Gates and Vengeance began playing the guitar solo from “Bat Country,” my heart melted as this is, in my opinion, the greatest guitar solo there ever was, is, and will ever be. I will say this was the biggest highlight of many highlights I had during the night.

Towards the end of the concert, “A Little Piece of Heaven” came on and I think this had the biggest pop from the crowd. Personally, I’ve nicknamed the song, “Everyone’s favorite song about necrophilia.” I think that is what fascinates everyone about the song though. It talks about a very taboo subject but portrays it as a love story that goes beyond the realm of death. “A Little Piece of Heaven,” is definitely an interesting song, but I encourage everyone to give it a try.

At the end of their set, Avenged Sevenfold bid everyone adieu and that was the end of the night. That euphoric feeling, I had felt inside me began to fade away, but I know I will remember the experience of seeing this amazing band for the rest of my life. After many hours of listening to their music, I finally got to hear Avenged Sevenfold while they were in the same room as me.

A nature photography tour of Madagascar, part 2: The Red Tsingy

In the last article, I surveyed the diverse and beautiful wildlife of Andasibe-Mantadia National Park . Today, I'd like to continue the tales of my Madagascar trip with a visit to the very north of the island.

Getting to the Red Tsingy is a bit of a task. Its location at the northern tip of Madagascar, together with the lack of adequate roads from the center of the island, means that you have to fly to the coastal town of Antsiranana (Diego Suarez). From there, it's a 2.5–3 hour drive to the park entrance, where you get the permit and hire a person to accompany you on your visit. If you wish to avoid the long daily drives, there is a very nice camp with relatively luxurious tents, which allows much quicker access to the Tsingy.

Before continuing, I'd like to explain what the Red Tsingy even is. "Tsingy" in Malagasy means "the place where one cannot walk barefoot." This pertains mostly to the Grey Tsingy, which is found in the Tsingy De Bemaraha National Park, located hundred of miles away, in the west of the country. The dark, karstic Tsingy De Bemaraha is indeed extremely sharp and hard, and I wouldn't dream of climbing them barefoot, but the Red Tsingy (or Tsingy Rouge in French) is a totally different phenomenon.

Not karstic, not hard or sharp and extremely gentle to the point that it's forbidden to touch them for fear of harming the delicate structures, The Red Tsingy are basically dried-up pinnacles composed of laterite and iron oxide-rich soil, which are the result of erosion, caused by the massive deforestation practiced throughout Madagascar. As always, deforestation eliminates the plants' ability to hold the soil in place, which leaves it vulnerable to being swept by rain and wind. The remaining shapes are made smooth by years of being sanded down by winds, which leaves truly wonderful, almost organic-looking shapes. New structures keep being formed and unveiled every year.

There are several sections in the area with short driving distances between them. Some areas are smaller and can be covered in one session, and some require much more time to traverse and shoot. As a regular tourist, the area can be seen in its entirety in one day, but if you're coming to shoot, I recommend spending at least three days exploring the area well enough to get good compositions of the Tsingy. Another problem is the opening hours of the park; it opens after sunrise and closes before sunset, so you need a special permit to stay there for sunset and post-sunset glow.

Shooting the Red Tsingy is, surprisingly, quite challenging. In general, I find that the more compositional elements an area has, the harder it is to find the really good images. Since the Tsingy are usually very closely packed, some of them can get in the way and ruin an otherwise good composition. The fact that the Tsingy are all the same color makes it difficult to create separation between the photographic elements. The photographer thus needs to actively search for compositions with different colored elements, which happens, for example, when the ground is different in color from the structures.

There are many other elements and factors that must be considered when shooting in the park. One of these is the relatively short time we have with good light. The sun is very harsh in Madagascar, especially in the north (since it's closer to the equator), and drops very fast before sunset. This means the light changes quickly in quality and that the sun can be difficult to incorporate into your images.

Another factor is the critical need to be aware of yourself when standing close to the Tsingy. They are very fragile, and hurting them must be avoided to preserve the park's beauty. It's often compositionally desirable to shoot from very close distances, but extra care must be taken. Focus-stacking is sometimes needed when some of the elements are very close to the camera.

The last problem is the lack of background elements. As you may remember from my composition series , a combination of near and far elements is often helpful in order to create a sense of depth in our two-dimensional image. In Tsingy Rouge National Park, the background is usually red slopes which climb to meet flat plains - not exactly the equivalent of Patagonia's glorious mountain ranges. This leaves the photographer with the choice to either have no background elements (perhaps apart from sky and clouds), or to include the background and risk lack of depth perception in the image, due to the elements being similar in color and texture.

In the next article in this series, I'll talk about photography in the wonderful Kirindy Forest, a private reserve holding spectacular wildlife and a very nice landscape.

'We do what we always do’: Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay make inevitable move at Zurich Classic

Change Text Size

If it’s the Zurich Classic of New Orleans then, eventually, Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele are going to be part of the conversation.

The duo seems to always make an inevitable move at TPC Louisiana, and this year it happened on Friday.

Schauffele and Cantlay, the lone pair in the field both ranked inside the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking entering the week, fired a 5-under 67 in the second round – the low round of the day in Foursomes.

The duo was 6-under on their round through 17 holes before finishing with a bogey on their final hole of the day. They are just one shot back of the lead held by a quartet of squads including Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry.

Cantlay, Schauffele save bogey after water ball at Zurich Classic

“We did exactly what we needed to put ourselves in position,” said Cantlay. “We’re at halftime now, one back, and I like our spot heading into the weekend.”

The pair, who won this event in 2022 and have been a staple of Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup teams over the last few years, have been a force at the Zurich Classic. They finished tied for fourth in their debut as a pair before winning in 2022. Last year they finished tied for 11th.

Cantlay and Schauffele co-hold the Foursomes scoring record at this event (63 last year) and the Four-Ball record (59 in 2022).

Whatever they’re doing just keeps working.

Cantlay, Schauffele get up-and-down for birdie at Zurich Classic

“We prepare individually, in terms of the way we play,” Schauffele said. “We do some team reads and things like that on the putting green, but for the most part, most of the time we know exactly where we need to leave ourselves even if we’re out of position so that always helps.”

Both Schauffele and Cantlay are looking for their first TOUR title since 2022. Schauffele won three times that year, while Cantlay won twice.

It’s been an incredibly steady 2024 campaign for Schauffele so far with seven top-10s in 10 starts, including a tie for second at THE PLAYERS. Cantlay hasn’t had the same run of results as his partner so far in 2024, but he comes to TPC Louisiana after a tie for third at the RBC Heritage last week.

The leaderboard is as bunched as ever heading into the weekend, with four duos tied for the lead at 13-under and Cantlay and Schauffele part of a six-way tie for fifth just a shot back.

Patrick Cantlay’s tight approach leads to birdie at Zurich Classic

The teams will once again play Four-ball for Saturday’s third round, and it should come as no surprise that Cantlay and Schauffele are eager for a solid moving day given how they’ve played through 36 holes at the Zurich Classic.

“We do what we always do,” Schauffele said.
