The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Looking to buy a motorcycle for on- and off-road riding, or long-distance travel? Fortunately, there are many choices. Our list showcases 18 of the best adventure motorcycles on the U.S. market for 2023.

adventure motorcycles

The adventure or “ADV” segment of the motorcycle industry is thriving, and the selection just keeps growing. Regardless of your preferences, skill level, or budget, you will likely find something to scratch your itch for adventure riding within the ever-expanding ADV bike lineup.

To be considered an “adventure” motorcycle we’re talking street legal, off-road capable, and comfortable to ride for long distances.

Adventure bikes inherently strive to offer equally good performance, handling, and comfort both on- and off-road. This is a complicated balance to strike, and there tend to be concessions one way or another. Choosing the best adventure motorcycle really means figuring out what qualities are most important to you.

This is not an exhaustive list of all bikes that meet those general criteria or could be made to meet them with after-market upgrades. Instead, we chose these tried-and-true adventure motorcycles that come from the factory ready for long-distance riding.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The V-Strom line offers new or budget-conscience adventure riders an affordable way to explore the world on a legendary V-twin. Well known for being reliable, versatile, and inexpensive, the 650 platform is a great way to join the fast-growing sport of adventure motorcycle riding.

Differences in the models are small but important. The standard V-Strom 650 (shown) comes with 10-spoke cast wheels with tubeless tires, while the XT model has spoke-style wheels with tubeless tires, hand guards, and a protective lower engine cowl.

The 650XT Adventure comes with everything the XT does in addition to a rugged accessory bar and 37L quick-release aluminum panniers. Depending on your riding style, goals, and budget, the 650 may be all the bike you’ll need.

If you can afford a bit more, budget adventure riders can now get a more purpose-built bike for their money with the new 800DE model.

  • Base price $12,299-12,699
  • Engine 659cc parallel twin
  • Power 79 hp
  • Wet weight 450 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 4.7 gal.
  • Tire size 21”/18”

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Aprilia, having just joined the adventure motorcycle scene last year, no changes have been announced for the Tuareg 660 for 2023. Aprilia has done a good job offering a compelling new ADV bike at a reasonable price.

At only 450 pounds wet, the Tuareg is nicely placed at the smaller end of the mid-weight options. The suspension has a whopping 9.4 inches of travel in both the front and rear, giving it one of the highest ranges of suspension travel in its class.

Fuel is carried low, having a big impact on how the bike handles and making it relatively easy to pick up for a bike this size. There are tons of unique, well-thought-out features to discover if you take the time to research this bike thoroughly.

For the many folks struggling to find a Ténéré 700 or who are thinking about paying over MSRP to get one, the Tuareg deserves consideration.

  • Base price $10,499
  • Engine 689cc parallel twin
  • Power 74 hp
  • Wet weight 452 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 4.2 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The Ténéré 700, or “T7,” has enjoyed a huge following since conception. Unfortunately, Yamaha has not been able to keep up with demand. If you can manage to find one, it is indeed a special bike worthy of the accolades it has received.

Yamaha has succeeded in offering the ADV community something that no other manufacturer has to date: a rock-solid engine in a capable ADV bike at an incredibly low price. How did they do that? Well, compared to the competition, the  Ténéré 700  has almost zero extras.

For some, this is a compromise; for others, a preference. If you need ride modes, traction control, and cruise control to enjoy your ride, this is not your bike.

If you like the simplicity of a basic setup that will help you become a better rider by the sheer absence of rider aids, start looking now. It might take you a while to find one, and you will likely have to pay above MSRP to get it. If you want more bang for your buck, look at the Tuareg 660 .

  • Base price $9,995
  • Engine 853cc parallel twin
  • Power 77 hp
  • Wet weight 493 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 4 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The F 750 is better suited for pavement than the F 850, coming with 19-inch front and 17-inch rear cast aluminum wheels. All GS models come equipped with innovative features and state-of-the-art technology, proving a plush ride regardless of which size you choose.

Additionally, BMW has a whole host of optional upgrades to make sure your bike meets all of your needs. If you go with the F 750 GS over the bigger, more off-road capable 850 models, you will potentially save a fair amount of money and a little bit of weight but also get a little less power, have a shorter range, and have less wind protection.

If you are looking at BMW because you want a GS and you’d like to be able to take your bike down any road you come across, check out the F 850 GS for better ground clearance, bigger, spoked wheels, and better suspension.

  • Base price $11,349-12,999
  • Engine 776cc parallel twin
  • Power 84.3 hp
  • Wet weight 507 lbs.
  • Tire size 21”/17"

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Brand new for 2023, Suzuki has stepped up to the plate offering adventure riders a more dirt-oriented bike with the addition of the 800DE model (shown) to the V-Strom lineup.

The 800DE fits nicely into the V-Strom family between the popular 650 and 1050 options. This is particularly exciting due to the fact that the   larger, mid-weight lineup of ADV bikes is notably lacking affordable options, and the V-Stroms are known for providing great value for the money.

The Adventure model on the 800 platform comes equipped with quick-release black-anodized 37L aluminum panniers, plus a rugged accessory bar and aluminum skid plate for true off-road touring capability.

While the base weight is unfortunately on the heavy side at 507 pounds (we don’t know what the Adventure model add-ons weigh), Suzuki’s reputation for reliability coupled with a fair price point will suit many.

  • Base price $12,595-13,595
  • Power 90 hp
  • Wet weight 504 lbs., 538 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 4 gal., 6.1 gal.
  • Tire size 21”/17”

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The standard F 850 GS (shown) is a trimmed-down version of the F 850 GS Adventure with a smaller fuel tank, fairing, and shorter suspension . The Adventure model, or “GSA” as it is often referred to, comes with quite a bit more and, as a result, weighs significantly more.

At 538 pounds, the GSA is a heavy adventure motorcycle for the mid-weight category but also the most long-distance-touring-friendly for this displacement. With its large gas tank, windshield, and bulky fairing, the F 850 GSA offers good range, weather protection, and comfort.

Don’t be misled by the base prices, as you will quickly realize many of the BMW features you want are optional, and they add up fast. Depending on what kind of adventure riding you want to do, if you are a BMW fan, you might find that for the weight and the price of the 850, you can get more bike for your money with the GS 1250 .

A good reason to stick with a BMW? They have a 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty — one of the best in the business.

  • Base price $12,190-13,190
  • Engine 853cc V-twin
  • Power 76 hp
  • Fuel capacity 6 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The Moto Guzzi V85TT has a transverse V-twin engine and is shaft driven — a unique combination. The standard model V85TT (shown) comes with quite a few comfort, performance, and tech features that you might not expect on an old-fashioned-looking bike.

The Adventure model has even more. If you crave classic, retro styling and a ton of character, and you’re more interested in road travel than aggressive off-road capability, take a peek at the details of this Moto Guzzi. You’ll be surprised by what you get for your adventure motorcycle money. Spoiler alert: there’s gorgeous luggage involved.

  • Base price $13,949-15,199
  • Engine 889cc parallel twin
  • Power 105 hp, 103 hp
  • Wet weight 473 lbs., 464 lbs.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Updated for 2023, the KTM 890 Adventure base model (shown) has received some nice upgrades that make it even more appealing at this price point. You might quickly find yourself spending more, though, as KTM has cleverly introduced a new demo mode, allowing you to test out all the optional electronic rider aids for the first 932 miles.

Upon startup, after you’ve passed that mark, the aids will vanish, and you may decide you need to purchase just one or two upgrades, or perhaps you’ll feel compelled to spring for the full tech pack. Regardless of your decision there, the reworked adjustable suspension, improved seat comfort, electronics, and better wind protection will serve you well.

The key difference between the Adventure R model and every other bike in the midweight ADV category is the suspension. Lightweight, responsive, and powerful, this bike is just as capable, comfortable, and fun on the twisties as it is on single track.

More dirt-oriented than the base model, this bike is for you if you want the highest-performing, easiest-to-pick-up adventure motorcycle money can buy.

  • Base price $14,995-17,395
  • Engine 888cc triple
  • Power 94 hp
  • Wet weight 501 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5.28 gal.
  • Tire size 19"/17", 21”/17”

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Released in 2020 to replace the well-loved Tiger 800, Triumph has done an amazing job producing a high-quality, capable, and comfortable range of bikes to meet all your adventure motorcycle needs.

If you prefer more road riding, the 900 GT (shown) and 900 GT Pro will take care of you on everything from urban adventures to proper long-distance travel. It comes with a 19-inch front and 17-inch cast wheel.

The GT Low model saves nearly 2 inches in seat height by slightly reducing the suspension travel. As this is the more street-oriented model, the tiny loss in ground clearance shouldn’t pose an issue.

If you want an adventure bike built for maximum off-road, all-day riding capability, control, and comfort, the Tiger 900 Rally and Rally Pro have you covered. The latter comes with a tubeless, spoked 21-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel.

Triumph also offers a 3-year, unlimited-mile warranty. Imagine how many miles you could lay down on one of these in three years!

  • Base price $14,499
  • Power 105 hp
  • Wet weight 472 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

First released in 2022, the Norden 901 is based on the well-loved KTM 890 Adventure platform. The key difference is the Norden is set up to be more comfortable on the road for traveling long distances than the 890, with a wider, plusher seat and softer suspension.

This bike stands out from the competition because of its relatively low MSRP and power-to-weight ratio — an impressive 105 horsepower and 472 pounds. Despite looking chunky, the fuel and engine weight are down low, making it feel surprisingly light and responsive.

Don’t let KTM’s reputation for being high maintenance scare you off; the oil change interval on this bike is a whopping 9,300 miles.

A welcome addition to the popular mid-weight adventure bike category, the Norden 901 handles very well on- or off-road and is comfortable, powerful, and fun to ride.

  • Base price $17,695-18,295
  • Engine 937cc V-twin
  • Power 110 hp
  • Wet weight 495 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5.5 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Introduced in 2022, the DesertX is an exciting addition to the mid-weight ADV motorcycle lineup. This is the first modern Ducati with a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear tire, long-stroke suspension, and a frame designed specifically for off-road adventuring.

Ducati did their homework, successfully offering an impressive package that stands out from the crowd. Head-turning styling and overall build quality; amazing suspension, brakes, and electronics package; and, of course, the most powerful engine in its class.

This is Ducati we’re talking about, after all. If you don’t want to make any concessions in performance or comfort going between on- and off-road riding, the DesertX is one of the most capable and highest-quality adventure motorcycles currently available.

  • Base price $15,199-17,599
  • Engine 1,137cc V-twin
  • Power 107 hp
  • Wet weight 554 lbs.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Suzuki has been inspired by the competition, introducing a whole host of revisions to the 1050 V-Strom and making it a better performing, more comfortable, and more versatile platform.

The new   DE model replaces the XT model from prior years, with the intention of offering a more off-road capable model to the lineup. How does the DE differ from the base model? The standard 1050 (shown) comes with 19-inch front and 17-inch rear tubeless 10-spoke cast wheels.

The DE has a spoked 21-inch tubed front wheel and 17-inch tubeless rear, offering better ground clearance and taller suspension for off-road performance, among other features.

The Adventure model is equipped with all the updates of the DE, with the addition of travel accessories such as aluminum panniers and LED fog lights.

  • Base price TBA
  • Engine 1,084cc parallel twin
  • Power 101 hp
  • Wet weight 505 lbs., 529 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5 gal., 6.5 gal.
  • Tire size 21”/18"

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

As of writing, the official 2023 models, options, and corresponding pricing for the Africa Twin lineup have yet to be confirmed for the US market. But no best adventure bikes list is complete without the Africa Twin.

Shown is the 2022 Adventure Sports ES model. With a lot of new adventure bikes popping up in the mid-weight category, Honda’s popular CRF1100L platform has some stiff competition.

It may not be the lightest, fastest, or highest-performing adventure motorcycle on the market, but Honda has given us a solid, good-performing, ultra-reliable, quality-made ADV bike that has been popular around the world for decades.

Most importantly, it handles the road just as well as the dirt and offers great value for the money. How do you argue with all that?

  • Base price $29,995-30,595
  • Engine 1,158cc V4
  • Power 170 hp
  • Wet weight 573 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 7.9 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Making its world debut in 2023, the V4 Rally is an updated Multistrada on steroids. It has way too many bells and whistles to list (we have a whole article on that  here ), but you can trust that all your power, comfort, safety, and connectivity needs will be exceeded.

Solo or two-up, this bike will confidently adjust to accommodate any conditions you might throw at it. Leading the pack in radar technology, the V4 is the first motorcycle in production to have both front and rear radar for adaptive cruise control and blind spot warnings.

Boasting more horsepower than any other ADV bike on the market, fuel consumption is something to investigate, especially if you are looking for the longest range possible.

The main reason this may not be the bike for you? Sit down before you read the price range.

  • Base price $16,299
  • Engine 1,199cc parallel twin
  • Wet weight 584 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 6.1 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The Super Ténéré is Yamaha’s biggest adventure motorcycle and has been around for years. It has a large following and is known for being trustworthy and capable.

Unlike its little brother, the Ténéré 700 , which notoriously carries its weight high, the engine mass is kept low on the 1200 for great handling. It does come with more features than the 700, but fewer than its competitors in the heavyweight category.

Fewer electronics mean less to fail, making it a reliable and durable choice for long-distance travel. The Super Ténéré does have basic frills, like cruise and traction control, and adjustable suspension.

This bike has been and will continue to be a solid choice for adventure riding.

  • Base price $19,595-24,200
  • Engine 1,160cc triple
  • Power 147 hp
  • Wet weight 529 lbs., 575 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5.3 gal., 7.9 gal.
  • Tire size 19”/18”, 21”/18”

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Triumph’s 1200 lineup got a complete makeover for 2022. A new engine, chassis, suspension, brakes — the whole works. The biggest complaint about the old 1200s was the weight. That has gone down, so good job Triumph for listening.

More road-focused with a 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel, the GT series includes the base model GT (shown), GT Pro, and GT Explorer. The Rally Pro and Rally Explorer models are more dirt-oriented, with a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked wheel, more ground clearance, and longer travel suspension.

The Rally models are the same bikes, except the Explorer comes with a larger tank size (5.3 gallons versus 7.9 gallons), blind-spot detection, fuel tank protection bars, standard heated seats, and taller handlebar risers.

Fast, agile, and comfortable, there is a Tiger for everyone in this broad lineup.

  • Base price $17,995-20,345
  • Engine 1,254cc flat twin
  • Power 136 hp
  • Wet weight 549 lbs., 591 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5.2 gal., 7.9 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The big BMW GS bikes are what come to mind for many when we think of adventure motorcycles. The GS Adventure — or “GSA” — is a beefed-up version of the base GS (shown), having bigger fuel capacity, more wind protection, spoked wheels, and higher clearance for off-road riding.

These behemoths may be heavy, but they are easier to pick up than you may expect, thanks to the big cylinder heads and crash bars that hold them partly upright.

If you are tempted to save money or weight by going with the base model, you might want to take a look at all the add-ons you’d likely want, calculate how the weight would be impacted, and compare it to what comes included in the price of the GSA.

There’s a reason BMW has a loyal brand following in the adventure bike ecosystem; they’ve set the bar high.

  • Base price $20,299
  • Engine 1,301cc V-twin
  • Power 160 hp
  • Wet weight 550 lbs.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Seeing extensive revisions in 2021, the KTM 1290 platform has only minor updates for 2023.

The Adventure S model (shown) is the more long-distance, road-oriented sibling of the aggressively off-road capable Adventure R model. The 1290 models cover ground quickly and effortlessly and have the ergonomics to make sure your adventures are as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

KTMs are highly customizable and known for being incredibly lightweight, fun, and powerful. Because of that, they’re one of the best adventure motorcycles on- and off-road.

2023 Adventure Motorcycles — No Perfect Bike

adventure motorcycles

Full disclosure, I ride a Suzuki DR650SE, and I call it my adventure motorcycle. We have indeed been on many wonderful adventures together, but it’s really a dual-sport. Yes, it is street-legal and off-road capable, but it is not very comfortable. It becomes exponentially less so on long-distance rides , even with upgrades.

Adventurers the world over will share similar stories of epic times on all types and sizes of bikes , including single-cylinder or “thumper” bikes like mine. The point is that while you can certainly have adventures riding whatever bike you fancy (or can afford), an ideal adventure motorcycle will take you everywhere you might want to go, and you’ll be a lot more comfortable.

Adventure Motorcycle FAQs

Good ground clearance, suspension travel, and large spoked wheels all help make navigating different types of terrain and obstacles easier, safer, and more enjoyable.

Vibration, jarring, and wind buffeting are three big factors that are exhausting on long rides. Twin-cylinder engines or above will vibrate much less than single-cylinder bikes. Plush suspension will absorb changes in terrain, and a frame-mounted fairing will provide ultimate protection from the wind.

The lightest weight bike in this comparison is the new Aprilia Tuareg 660 , coming in just under 450 pounds (449.7, to be exact). The only other bike that comes close is the Yamaha Ténéré 700 , at 452 pounds. The heaviest is the venerable BMW R 1250 GSA , at 591 pounds. Leave it to German engineering to figure out how to perfectly balance that much weight on two wheels.

No surprises here. The priciest is Ducati, and the economy is a Suzuki. The new Multistrada V4 Rally can be yours in Ducati Red for just under $31,000. For that price, you can buy matching Suzuki V-Stroms for yourself and two of your friends. The base model V-Strom 650 comes in at $9,104 and has been successfully carrying adventure riders all over the world for nearly 20 years.

Suzuki has gone after the adventure market with their new V-Strom “DE” models . They are still pretty far behind the competition in side-by-side comparisons, but the pricing is so good it might not matter. At the other end of the spectrum in quality, price, and cutting-edge technology, the Tiger 1200 line has been completely revamped for 2023.

If you want to do lots of road riding, the very popular BMW GSAs , Triumph Tigers , and of course, the Ducati Multistrada will offer the most comfort on the longest rides. Heavier, large-displacement bikes tend to ride better on the road.

Riding off-road can mean a lot of different things. Generally speaking, the lighter-weight ADV bikes tend to be easier to handle (and pick up!) riding off-road. Look at the KTM 890 R (really any KTM), Tuareg 660 , and Ténéré 700 if you live for dirt.

This is where the mid-weight adventure bikes win. The Ducati DesertX is creating quite a stir. I dare you not to want this bike. Also touted as equally well-appointed for both are the Tiger 900 , the new kid Norden 901 , and the Africa Twin .

Best Adventure Motorcycles 00 Hero

By: Tim Huber Published: Jun 13, 2023

While scramblers and even purpose-built motocrossers had already existed since the ‘50s and ‘60s, it wasn’t until 1980 that BMW Motorrad introduced the world to what’s widely considered to be the first-ever adventure motorcycle with the R80 GS — a ruggedized R80-engined mount that would quickly prove its worth with a victory at the infamous Dakar Rally only a year after its reveal. Since that time, the segment has enormously evolved, ultimately blossoming into one of today’s most popular segments in motorcycling. This enormous interest in the adventure bike class has prompted the majority of major moto manufacturers to toss their respective hats into the ADV ring, resulting in the most diverse and abundant adventure motorcycle market of all time.

While this growing class gives interested buyers more options than ever before, it can also make it difficult to sort through the more than five dozen ADV bikes that currently constitute the market. To help simplify this increasingly complex space, we’ve pored over the segment to highlight the best adventure motorcycles currently in production — counting down our picks for the very best across the entire class, while also delving into what defines an adventure motorcycle, what makes each bike on our list unique, how to find the adventure bike that’s right for you, and what to look for when shopping.

KTM 390 Adventure SW

  • Based on KTM’s proven 390 platform
  • Equipped w/ premium componentry
  • Loaded w/ advanced tech, rider aids, & switchable ABS
  • Sports modern Dakar raider-inspired bodywork
  • Comes standard w/ hand-guards, skid-plate, rear rack, & other ADV-focused items
  • Expensive price

Best Entry-Level Pick: After years of the motorcycling public clamoring for an adventure version of KTM’s 390 platform, the Ready To Race brand finally deployed the 390 Adventure, equipping the 373.2cc-engined Austrian moto with more than 170mm of suspension travel front and aft, a skid plate, and sharp Kiska-designed adventure-style bodywork. Now offered in an SW (spoked wheel) version, the 390 Adventure also sports a host of other high-end amenities including a slipper clutch, WP suspension, lean-angle-sensitive traction control, off-road and cornering ABS, and multiple ride modes, including a decimated off-road map. And while it isn’t the cheapest option, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better entry-level motorcycle in the ADV class than KTM’s 390.

Engine: Liquid-Cooled DOHC 373.2cc Single-Cylinder Power: 43hp & 27.3ft-lbs Weight: 355LBS Suspension Travel: 170mm Front / 178 Rear Ground Clearance: 200mm MSRP: $7,399

Yamaha Tenere 700 World Raid

  • Hardcore turnkey rally-spec version of what was already one of the best ADV bikes
  • Equipped w/ numerous components from the GYTR parts bin
  • Larger tank offers over 300 miles of range between fill-ups
  • Has nearly 10” of clearance & 9” of travel
  • Livery inspired by Gauloises-sponsored Dakar Rally racers from ‘80s & 90s
  • Not sold in U.S. market

Best Mid-Sized Pick: The Yamaha Ténéré 700 is already one of the most competent, off-road-capable adventure motorcycles in existence — made all the more impressive by the fact it costs roughly half of the segment’s full-sized class leaders. Born out of a beyond extensive real-world testing and development program, the Ténéré 700 packs the FZ/MT-07’s proven 689cc liquid-cooled CP2 parallel-twin, affording it ample power and torque while still weighing around 450lbs. Blurring the line between an adventure bike and dual-sport, the T7 also boasts an MX-style seat, proper off-road ergonomics, and slim bodywork, along with a Dakar-style navigation tower housing premium LED headlights and LCD gauges. Never one to rest on its laurels, the Tuning Fork company has recently introduced an even more capable World Raid-spec variant that gains an Öhlins steering damper, rally-spec fully adjustable long-travel KYB suspension with an inverted Kashima-coated fork, long-range dual side-mounted fuel tanks, a three-mode switchable ABS, a rally-style two-piece seat, and one of two different variant-exclusive livery options. This bike doesn’t just look the part, as the Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Raid is truly a real-deal hardcore off-road adventure machine, sharing much of its DNA with legimtate Dakar-style rally raid racers.

Engine: Liquid-Cooled 689cc Parallel-Twin Power: 73.4HP & 50FT-LBs Curb Weight: 485LBs Suspension Travel: 230mm Front / 220mm Rear Ground Clearance: 255mm MSRP: $14,500

adventure motorcycle travel

  • Latest successor to what’s widely considered first ever adventure motorcycle (the R80 G/S)
  • Enormously popular, premium adventure tourer in off-road-specific trim level
  • Benefits from BMW’s ShiftCam variable valve timing tech
  • Shaft drive requires far less maintenance compared to belt or chain
  • Comes standard w/ skid plate & full suite of crash bars
  • Absolutely enormous upgrades & aftermarket parts availability
  • Heavy curb weight at approximately 600lbs
  • Requires upgrades to extract full off-reading capabilities

Best Full-Size Pick: The latest iteration of the adventure motorcycle that kicked off the segment some four decades ago, the 2021 BMW R 1250 GS Adventure is the Bavarian brand’s dirt-ready full-sized GS variant. On top of getting hard cases, crash bars, a skid plate, and a variety of other off-road parts, the big GS retains all of the base model’s mechanical and technological bells and whistles like the BMW’s variable camshaft control system, adaptive headlights, DTC and ABS Pro brakes, an adjustable windscreen, TFT display, 7.9-gallon tank, BMW’s Cruising Light-equipped LED indicators and a heated seat . Benefitting from literally forty years of research and development and real-world high-level competition, there’s a very good reason that BMW’s R 1250 GS and its predecessors are such immensely popular choices among seasoned adventure riders and long-distance tourers.

Engine: Air & Liquid-Cooled 1,254cc DOHC Boxer Twin Power: 136hp & 105ft-lbs Curb Weight: 591lbs Suspension Travel: 210mm Front / 220mm Rear Ground Clearance: 185mm MSRP: $20,345

  • Optional Power Tank upgrade unlocks 21-kWh charging capacity
  • Must be charged & can’t have tank refilled when off-grid
  • Limited suspension travel compared to more off-road-focused ADV models

Best EV Pick: As a company that was founded by a former NASA engineer, it’s frankly unsurprising that Zero Motorcycle produces some of the most state-of-the-art and technologically-advanced electric bikes on the planet — with the California company’s all-new Zero DSR/X adventure motorcycle being far from an exception. Constructed around an all-new frame designed specifically for adventure riding, the DSR/X features a Z-Force 75-10 passively air-cooled, torque-optimized interior permanent magnet AC motor making 100hp and 166ft-lbs of torque, plus a Z-Force 17.3-kWh battery pack that offers a combined range of 134 miles.Running off of Zero’s state-of-the-art CYPHER III+ operating system, the DSR/X also boasts an inverted 47mm Showa Separate Function Cartridge Fork and a 46mm mono-shock that both offer 7.48” of travel and are adjustable for preload, compression, and rebound damping. Tech on this electric adventure model includes Bosch Advanced MSC with Combined Braking, off-road route planning, Vehicle Hold Control, connectivity to a dedicated app, and a dedicated Off-Road mode.

Engine: Electric Interior PMAC Motor Power: 100HP & 166FT-LBs Curb Weight: 544LBs Suspension Travel: 190mm Front / 190mm Rear Ground Clearance: 246.3mm MSRP: $24,495

Ducati DesertX

  • Purpose-built cutting-edge mid-sized ADV bike dressed in ‘90s Dakar-inspired bodywork
  • Sold w/ optional crash bars & tail-mounted auxiliary fuel tank
  • Retains Ducati’s classic razor-sharp on-road cornering
  • Fantastic ergonomics
  • Now offered in Audi’s RS Q e-tron Dakar racer’s RR22 livery
  • Minimal aftermarket part availability

Best Overall Pick: Originally breaking cover as a render in 2019 before being revealed in concept form in April of 2020, the Ducati DesertX is the Borgo Panigale’s first-ever attempt at a hardcore off-road-focused adventure motorcycle. Utilizing the same 110-hp 937cc Testastretta 11° Desmodromic engine as the Multistrada V2  (and base model Monster), the DesertX features a completely novel chassis design engineered for go-anywhere riding. Riding on an all-terrain 21” front, 18” rear wheel set, the frame is paired with a long travel Kayaba suspension setup affording 9” of travel in front and 8.66” out back. The framework and engine come cloaked in a retro-inspired set of Dakar-style bodywork that takes aesthetic  inspiration from the Ducati-powered racers that won the Dakar Rally in ’90 and ’94. Available with a host of optional add-ons including a suite of aluminum hard luggage and a supplementary 8-liter fuel cell, the DesertX also boasts a rally-style exhaust, a six-axis Bosch IMU-regulated electronics package, a quick-shifter,  9.84” of ground clearance, Brembo M50 monobloc brakes, a skid plate, a 5” TFT display, and half-a-dozen riding modes — two of which are dedicated off-road modes.

Engine: Liquid-Cooled 937cc L-Twin Power: 110HP & 68FT-LBs Dry Weight: 445LBs Suspension Travel: 230mm Front / 220mm Rear Ground Clearance: 250mm MSRP: $17,095

Supplementary Selections

Runner-Up Adventure Motorcycle Picks

While we’ve now gone over our absolute favorite adventure bikes on the market, the reality is they aren’t the only available options that are worth considering. Below, we’ve compiled a handful of additional selections to supplement our five favorite models above.

Royal Enfield Himalayan

First launched in 2016, Royal Enfield’s Himalayan represented a rugged yet rudimentary, back-to-basics take on a modern ADV bike, employing a simple air-cooled single-cylinder engine housed in a half-duplex split cradle frame in lieu of the tech-laden big-bore multi-cylinder engines found in the lion’s share of models that comprised the segment. Despite the thumper’s displacement, the Himalayan is still good for freeway travel, and while it is short on tech — a fact that’s reflected in the sub-$5,000 motorcycle’s MSRP — this model does come equipped with Royal Enfield’s new Bluetooth-connected “Tripper” onboard navigation assistant and system.

Engine: Air-Cooled 411cc SOHC Single-Cylinder Power: 24.3hp & 23.6ft-lbs Curb Weight: 438lbs Suspension Travel: 200mm Front / 180mm Rear Ground Clearance: 220mm MSRP: $5,449

Husqvarna Norden 901 Expedition

Easily one of the most hyped and hotly-anticipated new adventure bike releases in recent years, Husqvarna’s Norden 901 quickly proved itself as one of the most capable mid-sized ADV models on the market, though in a bid to bolster its go-anywhere capabilities, the Swedish marque has opted to outfit the 901 with a host of off-road and travel accessories and upgrades as standard, transforming the bike into a turnkey all-terrain overlander. Cloaked in a new topographical-themed livery — a motif that also adorns the 36-liter soft rear luggage included on the Husqvarna Norden 901 Expedition is powered by the parallel-twin used in KTM’s 890 platform — a liquid-cooled 889cc mill putting down 105hp and 74ft-lbs of torque. Additionally, the Expedition-spec Norden also comes loaded with an aluminum skid plate, a host of advanced tech, connectivity to a dedicated smartphone app, a touring windscreen, multiple ride modes including off-road modes, an off-road ABS function, and WP XPLOR suspension (and steering damper) affording 9.44” of travel fore and aft.

Engine: Liquid-Cooled 889cc Parallel-Twin Power: 105HP & 74FT-LBs Weight: 473LBs Suspension Travel: 240mm Front / 240mm Rear Ground Clearance: 270mm MSRP: $15,799

adventure motorcycle travel

For its latest model year, KTM took its already class-leading R-spec 1290 Super Adventure, and treated the Austrian adventure bike to a top-to-bottom redesign, bestowing the V-Twin-engined on/off-roader with a new frame paired with a longer swing-arm, a 7” TFT display, top-shelf Alpina and WP componentry, a revised powertrain with lighter cases, upgraded pistons, and a reworked exhaust, and a suite of cutting-edge rider aides regulated via a new 6-axis lean angle sensor, like motor slip regulation, off-road traction control, and hill hold control. Sporting completely revised bodywork, the lighter and even more capable 2023 1290 Super Adventure R boasts the world-class performance that one would expect from a manufacturer that’s bagged an unprecedented 18 consecutive wins at the Dakar Rally.

Engine: Liquid-Cooled 1,301cc DOHC 75° V-Twin Power: 160hp & 101.8ft-lbs Dry Weight: 487.2lbs Suspension Travel: 220mm Front / 220mm Rear Ground Clearance: 242mm Purchase: $20,299

adventure motorcycle travel

A major step in a new direction for the Harley-Davidson Motor Co , the Pan America is the Black and Orange’s first-ever purpose-built adventure model and is powered by a much more potent, modern, and sophisticated V-Twin that pumps out 150hp and 94ft-lbs of torque. On top of 211mm of ground clearance, the Pan America also sports 190.5mm of suspension travel front and back. The $2,680 premium over the base model for the Special-spec of the Pan America (seen above) gets you a slew of off-road-focused hardware and features such as a real-time tire pressure monitoring system, a center stand, a multi-position rear brake pedal, brush Guard, an aluminum Skid Plate, an adaptive Daymaker headlight, hand wind deflectors, heated grips, a steering damper, semi-active front and rear suspension with the Bar and Shield brand’s Vehicle Load Control and an Adaptive Ride Height system, and optional tubeless spoked wheels.

Engine: Air & Liquid-Cooled 1,254cc DOHC Boxer Twin Power: 102HP & 664FT-LBS Curb Weight: 573lbs Suspension Travel: 150mm Front / 150mm Rear Ground Clearance: 185mm MSRP: $20,399

Energica Experia Green Tourer

Thanks to a 261-mile range, the Energica Experia Green Tourer stands as the world’s first true touring-capable electric motorcycle. Made in Italy, this battery-powered adventure bike boasts a slew of impressive specs including a 3.5-second 0-60mph time and a 112-mph top speed courtesy of a redesigned PMASynRM motor cranking out 102hp and an otherworldly 664ft-lbs of torque. Making the bike all the more conducive to touring and long—distance riding are multiple USB outlets and a set of side hard panniers and a top case that collectively afford a cool 112 liters of storage space.

Engine: Air & Liquid-Cooled 1,254cc DOHC Boxer Twin Power: 102HP & 664FT-LBS Curb Weight: 573lbs Suspension Travel: 150mm Front / 150mm Rear Ground Clearance: 185mm MSRP: $23,750

As the class’s name suggests, adventure motorcycles are versatile machines built for near-unlimited two-wheeled freedom. Like dual-sports and enduros, adventure bikes are purpose-engineered for both on and off-road riding, and, as such, feature long-travel suspension, ruggedized and often fortified frames and powertrains, upright riding positions that are incredibly conducive to standing up on the pegs, (typically) spoked wheels in off-road-oriented sizes (such as 21”/18” or 19”/17”), and full or partial sets of bodywork that almost always sport tall windscreens, navigation towers, and other elements borrowed from Dakar-style rally raid bikes. It’s also common to see more off-road-focused specs of adventure models that come equipped with hard luggage, additional crash protection, auxiliary lighting, and other amenities for when the tarmac ends

In addition to wearing Dakar-style bodywork in favor of motocross-style plastics, adventure motorcycles tend to be markedly more touring-friendly than their on and off-road-friendly enduro and dual-sport counterparts — usually thanks to bigger, more powerful engines that enable ADV mounts to lend themselves much better to freeway travel. Adventure bikes also frequently feature large, extended-range fuel cells, allowing for ample autonomy between trips to the pump. Because these machines are designed for long-range use, they also tend to be incredibly reliable, with bullet-proof engines that boast services intervals of more than 10,000 miles.

Traditionally, the bikes that we define as adventure motorcycles have been of the big-bore variety, with displacements at or above the one-liter mark — with smaller engines also historically helping to differentiate dual-sports from full-sized adventure bikes — though in more recent years we’ve seen smaller-engined options (as well as a myriad of mid-sized models) with crash protection, long-travel suspension, unmistakable ADV-style bodywork, and other traits that place them squarely into the adventure motorcycle category. And while it makes them substantially more freeway-capable, the larger engines — which then require the bike to have a larger chassis, larger suspension, larger brakes, etc — add a considerable amount of weight, making them more difficult to negotiate off-road terrain compared to lightweight dual-sports or regular dirtbikes .

Often borrowing much of their chassis, powertrain, electronics, and suspension development straight from factory MotoGP and Dakar Rally teams, adventure motorcycles often represent the flagship offerings of major moto marques, and as a result are often bestowed with the latest and greatest, most cutting-edge powertrains and technologies. This makes adventure motorcycles some of the most advanced, high-performance bikes in existence, though state-of-the-art tech like electronically adjustable and/or active suspension coupled with large-displacement multi-cylinder engines also make adventure motorcycles one of the most expensive segments in the two-wheeled realm.

Because of their robust suspension, upright powerful engines, and a suite of protection, adventure motorcycles are also wildly versatile, and lend themselves tremendously well to just about any riding application, from fire trail exploration to cross-continent touring to moto camping. Their upright riding position also makes adventure bikes a stellar choice for urban commuting duties. And, while you may not guess it from looking, when properly set up, adventure motorcycles can offer some shockingly high performance on the road — as evidenced by a mostly-stock Ducati Multistrada 1260 winning the 2018 motorcycle class at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

There are dozens of adventure motorcycles in production right now, which can make finding the right bike intimidating — and that’s before you start factoring in the even more abundant used motorcycle market . To help start your search, begin by narrowing down your selection of bikes based on your skill level and riding experience. If you’re new to riding or have no experience off-road, then you’ll want to steer clear from full-size models, as they’re much harder to wrestle around and control. You can always upgrade to a larger, more powerful model later on down the road

Next, you’ll want to factor in your intended use. By looking at how much time you plan on riding on-road versus off-road, you should be able to narrow down your search to models designed for your intended riding applications. On top of often sporting elements like sump-guards, crash bars, hard luggage, and auxiliary lighting, the more off-road-focused adventure motorcycles will also feature better ground clearance and markedly longer suspension travel.

You’ll also want to consider how much freeway travel you plan on doing, as this will help determine which engine size will be appropriate (though again, new riders should avoid big-bore models). Mid-sized adventure bikes are also a fantastic option, as they offer a compromise with less weight than big-bore models — and therefore better off-road prowess — while still being plenty free-way travel capable. Likewise, we’d also highly recommending exploring potential used bike options, as it can be a great way to save — especially when dealing with a low-mile example or one that’s still under its factory warranty .

Now that you’re clued into what an adventure bike is and have a better sense of how to go about finding the model that’s right for you, let’s delve into the ten main areas to take into consideration before heading down to your local dealership.

Engine: As the heart of the motorcycle, an ADV moto’s engine is of utmost importance. As per usual, you’ll want to look into the engine configuration and the number of cylinders, displacement, cam setup, and fueling and cooling systems. You’ll also want to not only pay attention to how much horsepower and torque a given engine produces but also how much the motorcycle weighs as well — as a motorcycle’s power-to-weight ratio will give a much better sense of real-world abilities than simply seeing its number of ponies on paper.

Technology: Representing some of the most advanced motorcycles on earth, modern adventure bikes must be able to contend with an enormous variety of settings and conditions. In a bid to help make it easier to navigate one of these approximately 500lb machines both on and off-road , manufacturers have routinely started bestowing high-end ADV models with electronically-regulated active/adaptive suspension, live tire pressure monitoring systems, vehicle hill and hold control, adaptive headlights, electronically adjustable windscreens, heated (and sometimes cooled) seats and grips, multiple ride modes, adjustable traction control, and cornering ABS, just to name a few.

Off-Road Readiness: Separating ADV mounts from full-size sport-touring bikes is the former’s off-road prowess. Despite their hefty curb weight, many adventure bikes are capable of affording solid dirt-going capabilities thanks to advanced chassis designs paired with long-travel suspension and a generous amount of ground clearance. Alongside luggage, crash protection, and auxiliary lighting, other elements that point to a given model being more off-road-capable include spoked wheels, knobby tires, tall windscreens, toothed footpegs, and “beak-style” integrated front fenders.

Weight: Though there are smaller displacement exceptions and outliers, most adventure motorcycles tend to be on the heavy side, tipping the scales at or around the 500lb mark. This makes for a wonderfully planted ride in town or on the freeway, though it can make things difficult in the dirt — especially for less experienced off-road riders. We strongly encourage anyone even considering buying an adventure bike to first hit a dealership and experience what it feels like to operate one of these machines before going any further.

Storage: Because adventure bikes are designed for long-range use, it’s frankly unsurprising that manufacturers would opt to bestow many of these models with storage compartments — often under the seat or tank cover — that make life on the road easier. What’s more, there’s an enormous range of aftermarket storage options for practically every ADV model, including tank and tail bags, soft cases, panniers, and so on.

Range: If you plan on taking on long-distance treks or spending much of your time out on the trails, off of the grid, then fuel economy and tank size (aka range) will be an important factor to take into consideration. Fortunately, these freedom machines are built for untethered exploration and as such tend to come equipped with generously sized fuel cells. Some models even sport supplementary tanks under the seat or in other non—traditional locations on the bike.

Style: Though they all have a similar basic shape, adventure bikes can vary pretty hugely aesthetically, with some models taking inspiration from their respective manufacturer’s sport and superbike family, and others going with a more traditional Dakar-style design. It’s also worth mentioning that there are plenty of riders that like the look of adventure bikes, and opt to purchase and ride them despite having little to no intention of ever going off-road. Just like buying a pickup because you dig the aesthetic, there’s nothing wrong with seeking out an ADV bike for this reason, though we’d just recommend considering some of the more road-focused models.

Available Factory Amenities: Again, as the flagship offering from many of their manufacturers, adventure bikes tend to come outfitted with more bells and whistles than any other class of motorcycle. These optional add-ons include heated grips and seats, luggage, auxiliary lighting, crash protection, upgraded pillions, spoked wheel options, and connectivity to smartphone apps, among many, many more.

Aftermarket Availability: Not unlike the aftermarket overland sector has exploded for trucks over the last decade, so too has the aftermarket realm embraced the influx in popularity in the adventure bike market, resulting in an absolutely enormous array of available add-ons and upgrades from third party companies. You can find almost any aftermarket part you could possibly need for just about any ADV bike model, though some of the more popular mounts — like BMW’s GS range and KTM’s top-of-the-line 1290 Super Adventure R — will come with markedly more options. Many of these aftermarket items are more affordable than factory options — and at times better quality, too — though they aren’t backed by a factory warranty like the factory-installed add-ons are.

Servicing Costs & Intervals: In addition to the motorcycle itself, you’ll also want to factor in a given bike’s cost of ownership. This means looking into costs for things like insurance and maintenance, as well as what service intervals there are and what work is required when the time comes. The good news is that now, more than ever, adventure motorcycles — and motorcycles in general — are offering better reliability, fewer emissions, more power, and longer service intervals than ever before.

What is Adventure Motorcycle Travel?

Gustavo Costa

What is Adventure motorcycle travel riding?

Some say adventure motorcycle riding is going off the beaten track, away from the pavement, and down into the dirt. That it is riding into the unknown, crossing a continent or two, going around the world, up the mountains and down into the valleys, doing plenty of river crossings, camping in the wilds, and making sure they leave the rear-end tire markings carved on the desert sands.

Others find that goal is to seek a new destination, touring their way until they reach it while sleeping in the comfort of a hotel bed.

For each motorcycle rider, there is a different adventure level.

The one that makes you happy, it’s the right one for you.

I could take the easy route and say upfront that adventure motorcycle riding is happiness. Instead, I’ll give you my perspective. Adventure motorcycle riding is the overcoming of difficult situations while riding both on and off-road, experiencing new places, and living the ultimate adventure of adjusting your dreams with your capacities.

The fulfillment feeling that comes out of it, is also sharable. You can choose to share it with your friends, family, or fellow riders you meet along the way. Or on the other hand, you can keep it to yourself and transform it into self-growth, joyful awareness, and almost a meditation-like state. To travel and have moments where it’s just you and the world is unbeatable and addicting.

Actually, adventure motorcycle riding should come with a Surgeon General warning – ” to be used moderately for it may cause dependence”.

What-is-Adventure-Motorcycle-travel

If you are considering adventure motorcycle riding, you are probably thinking about embarking on a motorcycle trip that lures you like some sort of shiny object at the end of the road that you can help but follow.

But before doing it, there is a whole list of items to address beginning with the type of motorcycle that fits your riding style, and the terrains you want to cover on your adventure travels.

The Adventure Motorcycle

Adventure motorcycle today is a category of motorbikes that stretches beyond what it used to do a few years ago. With the big trail bikes being so popular nowadays, people tend to mix both adv bikes and dual sports.

To put it simply, an adventure bike is a type of motorcycle that allows you to ride both on and off-road, performing relatively well in all environments. Of course, we can’t expect that a big adventure motorcycle performs offroad like a lightweight dirt bike, nor on-road like a sports bike.

2021-CR1100L-africa-twin

Yamaha Tenere 700

2021-Yamaha-Tenere-700

This is one of the most competent and reliable, off-road capable middleweight adventure motorcycles out there. Lightweight and capable of a good ample torque, this is a bike with proper off-road ergonomics. A big windshield, a large amount of ground clearance, and a slim bodywork make the Tenere 700 very maneuverable both on the tarmac and out of it.

Kawasaki KLR 650 Adventure

kawasaki-klr-650-adventure

This very popular adventure touring bike has been the ride of many long-distance adventure motorcyclists. The all-new Versys 650 is aimed more for the on-road but dressed up, it’s an affordable and versatile middleweight bike and a good choice if you stick to the pavement.

KTM 390 Adventure

KTM-390-ADVENTURE

The KTM 390 is an entry-level adventure bike, that doesn’t sacrifice any fun. Lightweight and standing up to the Austrian manufacturer’s “ready to race” moto, you can still expect lots of enjoyable moments out riding. Just don’t expect to ride it like a dirt bike.

Adventure motorcycle travel is not only about the bike. It’s also about the rider, the traveling experience, and the destination. But to fully enjoy the journey from start to finish, there are a few other things to consider.

Planning your Motorcycle Adventure Travel

Adventure-motorcycle-touring

Before deciding what to take, you have to decide where to go the way to get there. Choosing the right adventure motorcycle is just one part of the task. Preparing the bike and packing for the trip is ultimately influenced by the terrain you ride through and the time you spend out riding.

Those are good factors to have in mind because whether you decide to go camping or find that a hotel is the best choice to rest from the day out riding, there are still arrangements to be made before departure.

Routes and stop points can be planned, with enough slack to accommodate last-minute detours or unforeseen circumstances. There are several navigation systems and mobile apps to help you with it.

Of course, you can just go, and take on the let’s “see what happens” spirit of adventure, riding wherever the road takes you. Some folks do it and enjoy it. but in this case, some experience is advised.

Preparing your Motorcycle and Riding Gear

Your motorcycle is  not adventure-proof . So you might need to fit the bike with protection parts like bash plates, crash bars, handguards, and other protective accessories.

The  fuel range  of your adv bike is also important if you are riding in remote locations. In some parts of the world, fuel might not be available for long stretches, and you could consider a rotopax or a fuel bladder to overcome the limitations of the bike’s fuel tank.

To carry what you need for the motorcycle travel adventure you’ll need  luggage . This is a good time to think if you are traveling solo or one up, and again the duration and location of the ride. The luggage options are so diverse and dividing as the passionate discussions about what’s the best luggage set up. But you got hard luggage , soft luggage , rack systems, and rackless systems . All have their positives and negative sides to them. Do remember to go for a system that works for you, and has enough versatility and capacity for your adventure bike travels.

As your adventure motorcycle, you are also not adventure-proof, so you should take the time to consider the proper  riding gear , taking into account factors like the location, climate, the season, and the terrain you are riding through. No point in gearing up with a Gore-Tex waterproof jacket if you are riding in hot dry weather, or to put on a mesh jacket for the rainy season. Motorcycle jackets, pants, riding boots, should be adapted to where you ride the most. Same as helmets. Check out our  top 10 best adventure helmets , or our  guide on choosing an adventure helmet  packed with useful information.

Packing for your Motorcycle Adventure

Every motorcycle adventure is different, and every rider has different needs, but the basic items that everyone needs to pack don’t differ that much.

Water  is essential. Carry it in bladders, bottles, or containers, but take water with you.

If camping is on your plans, well, you might need  camping gear . A tent , sleeping bag , sleeping mattress , and cooking gear are in order. Keep them light and don’t exceed what your actual needs. These items tend to be bulky and take up to much room on top of your bike.

Even if you don’t plan to do any motorcycle camping, some quick fix-up meals or some high-energy  food  items are essential to keep your energy levels up when you need them.

A  First Aid Kit  is a must on any ride. You never know what’s going to happen, and no, it does not only happen to others.

As with any other motor vehicle, the need for repairs arises unannounced and when we least expect it.  Motorcycle tools and spare parts  are an essential option to make quick fixes on the go in places where you don’t have the commodity of a mechanic. A basic mechanics course is also a great way to be prepared. Cutting the trip short or being stranded in the middle of nowhere is not a great way to end your journey.

Of course, you need  clothing . You’re not going to be wearing riding gear every single minute. Yet keep it basic for clothes can quickly fill the luggage capacity, and remember they can always be washed.

Keeping your motorcycle secure while you are not around, is also nice to remember. Returning to where you left your bike to find out it’s not there is not pleasant. A  security lock  is an easy-to-carry piece of gear.

Finally don’t forget to pack a  camera , or at the very least using the one on your mobile phone. Remembering the experience is great, but having a recorded recollection of them is even better. Plus you can share them with your friends and family.

Either you prefer a more motorcycle touring-like adventure, or you want to take the adventure off the beaten track, the basic approach doesn’t change much, it simply adapts. To you and your adventure motorcycle travel.

So Plan, Ride, Live, and Repeat.

12 Best Adventure Motorcycle YouTubers Worth Watching (2023)

YouTube is blowing up with adventure riders everywhere and it’s these people who are inspiring the next generation of riders. They’re unbiased, raw and true storytellers who captivate the hearts of many aspiring adventure riders globally.

We’ve curated a list of the best YouTubers around for some genuine inspiration. These riders not only see their country but the entire world, and aren’t characters that you might expect. In fact, we’re featuring numerous adventure riders who are actually female.

Note: These aren’t listed in any particular order and are simply Frontaer’s preference. We may have even left the best until last! And besides – there are way more channels than these 12.

1. eveRide ADV

With more than 100,000 subscribers, eveRide ADV is a popular YouTuber who takes his viewers on extensive rides around North America and the world.

adventure motorcycle travel

There are also in-depth and honest adventure motorcycle reviews which is a refreshing change. After all, most adventure motorcycling magazines of yesteryear were just too generous with their 15-minute audits instead of putting their bikes through the wringer.

2. On Her Bike

This is the personal motorcycling diary of Kinga Tanajewska. She started riding in Australia while studying here and fell in love with the sport. From there, On Her Bike was born into an epic YouTube channel with many fans.

adventure motorcycle travel

She’s known for her raw and candid style while being humble and accommodating of others. Her accent throws off many of her viewers as she sounds Australian yet speaks multiple languages fluently.

3. MOTOTREK

If you want to truly learn adventure motorcycling , then pay close attention to MOTOTREK. Practically every lesson that you want to know is covered here and completely for free. It’s clear that Bret Tkcas really knows his stuff and has seen much of the world.

adventure motorcycle travel

Today he spends his time as a professional ADV instructor; both creating YouTube content and sharing his love for adventures on courses and group rides. He’s certainly earned himself a reputation given the massive amount of ADV riders who watch the channel for advice towards becoming safer riders.

4. Alex Chacon

While not a full-on adventure rider, Jeremy Rhydes has certainly got a decent following of 330,000+ subscribers. He’s more of a general adventurer nowadays as opposed to an adventure rider, and combines the road with the pavement.

adventure motorcycle travel

Jeremy became viral after several videos of him traveling the world with his GoPro and several motorcycles garnered massive attention. It’s where we first found him in 2013! While not for the older generation, many do enjoy his interesting content.

5. Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV

Australians have a knack for travel and nomatter where you go in the world, it’s pretty easy to find an Australian. Despite being a small population, the entire country is big on adventures given how much space they have to explore. In fact, the dirt biking community here in Australia is huge and growing year-on-year.

adventure motorcycle travel

Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV (quite a mouthful, right?) is a raw and unfiltered look at a group of riders who love to see the country and the world.

6. Rosie Gabrielle

Much like Itchy Boots and On Her Bike, Rosie Gabrielle has a strong following who enjoy her adventures into somewhat dangerous countries. While she has created some controversey, she’s very authentic in what she shares on the channel.

adventure motorcycle travel

With under 100 videos and over 400k subscribers, it’s clear that many people enjoy her content. It’s engaging yet raw and real. While there’s some sensationalism with her channel with draws some people away, it also draws some people to her who resonate with the message.

We have more information about Rosie Gabrielle here .

7. Sleipnir Adventures

For long-form story-telling, Sleipnir Adventures is the channel to follow. The videography is excellent and there’s hardly any audio. Just pure motorcycle adventures without the fluff.

adventure motorcycle travel

There’s something to be said about YouTubers who keep it straight-edge and without the drama. Those that can tell a story without the words. If motorcycling on long-open highways feels like meditation to you, then this is the only YouTube adventure motorcycling channel you should be watching.

8. Jacob Laukaitis

Jacob Laukaitis isn’t a full-on adventure motorcycling guy. It’s a global traveler who just happens to have spent some time behind the handlebars. He’s certainly known for really going off the beaten track in search for true adventures into far-flung countries.

adventure motorcycle travel

High risk is something that resonates with Jacob and his followers love to see his episodes. There is some drama which doesn’t resonate with the older demographic, but as for extreme adventures which are sometimes controversial, he’s the guy to follow.

9. Itchy Boots

Very similar to On Her Bike is Noraly who also spent some time working in Australia and is now hooked on traveling the world with her motorcycle. Many viewers of On Her Bike also watch Itchy Boots with many looking to see both riders spending a few episodes together.

adventure motorcycle travel

Unlike many YouTubers, Noraly prefers to use long-winded episodes and a distinct lack of jump cuts and sensationalism. If you simply enjoy watching others ride with some audio commentary, then this is the channel for you.

10. RoadsUp

RoadsUp is increasing in popularity on YouTube. While they only have 10 videos, the husband and wife team genuinely know motorcycle travel very well.

adventure motorcycle travel

You’ll find Peter and Claudia sharing their lessons learned and adventures frequently. Given the COVID-19 situation, their frequent travels appears to have relaxed yet they are certainly knowledable and routinely answer questions from their viewers.

11. Pedro Mota

For global adventures, Jake Bolles is certainly the guy to follow. He’s more of a remote-location rider with the occasional city road mixed in.

adventure motorcycle travel

His trips certainly take him to far-flung places which are often beyond where others would be comfortable traveling. That said – he’s well rewarded and shares some advice to keep others safe on the journey.

12. Megan Kaptein

The 4th female rider on this list is Megan Kaptein who, with only 20 videos, shares her story with other female riders around the world. She ditched her glamor life for one behind the handlebars and hasn’t looked back.

adventure motorcycle travel

Her channel is dedicated to her dear friend Gabriel Forest Khouth who sadly passed away when riding in mid-2019. This has motivated her (and indeed many of her followers) to make the most out of their short lives.

Most Inspiring Rider: Vanessa Ruck

We couldn’t help ourselves and had to add another rider, one who’s captivated our hearts through her inspirational story. This is Megan from The Girl On A Bike.

adventure motorcycle travel

In 2014 her life changed forever when she was severely injured after being struck by a car. Coincidently, she’s #13 on our list…unlucky much?

Vanessa has since experienced 7 surgeries on the road to recovery and hasn’t let that stop her from getting a larger chunk out of life. She’s based in the UK but her various motorcycles have taken her across Europe and when she’s not riding, she’s tinkering in her incredible garage.

Don’t get too caught up watching YouTube channels, as they can sometimes be a little disheartening. The very thing that inspires us can also hold us back.

Use these channels as inspiration, but focus on planning your own journey in the next 3 to 5 years. Whether that’s your state, your country or even global expedition – the world is open to those who are prepared for the journey ahead.

The 5 Best Motorcycle Rides in California

The 5 Best Motorcycle Rides in California

From winding roads along the coast to easygoing routes through the desert, here are the state's best motorcycle rides.

May 20, 2020

Winding mountainous roads, panoramic vistas, and moderate weather are what motorcyclists dream of—and are just a few of the characteristics that make California a coveted biking destination. If the coastline alone wasn’t enough to convince you to head out on a scenic ride, perhaps the expansive deserts, forested woodlands, and vast orchards will do the trick.

From famous motorcycle roads to undiscovered gems, you’ll never run out of new riding experiences in the Golden State. Whether there’s fresh pavement, new detours, different weather conditions, or less traffic, it’s nearly impossible to have the same ride twice. So let the breeze blow through your hair, lean into the turns, and take in the scenery on the way to your next favorite California destination.

Badwater Basin to Dante’s View

If Death Valley National Park wasn’t on your bucket list , it ought to be now. A motorcycle ride through the hottest place in North America requires some planning, but is well worth it for the photos and memories. Since Death Valley is a remote destination , you might want to consider staying at the nearby Furnace Creek overnight before riding from Badwater Basin to Dante’s View.

This motorcycle route is noteworthy for many reasons, but it’s primarily known for offering the opportunity to see Death Valley’s lowest point—not to mention some of the best vistas in the area. Sitting at 282 feet below sea level, Badwater Basin is the lowest elevation point on the continent and is a surprisingly beautiful sight. The ground is covered with a thick layer of salt, which mimics the appearance of fresh snowfall. After taking some time to admire this landscape, hop on your motorcycle to experience the valley from new heights.

Unlike many of our other favorite rides, the path from Badwater Basin to Dante’s View is fairly straight, paving a horseshoe shape around the mountains and up to the vista point. From Dante’s View, you can see across the basin, over to the nearby mountains, and on a clear day, all the way to Mount Whitney—California’s highest peak.

Spend another night at the campgrounds to stargaze and appreciate the rich beauty of the arid desert before heading back to the beaches, forests, deserts, metropolises, or mountains in California that you call home.

Hollywood to the Rock Store

adventure motorcycle travel

The Rock Store is one of the most common endpoints for a Southern California motorcycle ride, making it a quintessential rest stop on a bike tour of the Golden State. Whether you pop inside for a comforting meal or hang outside to look at the bikes and meet new friends, you’ll never regret the ride.

Start your day with a refreshing Hollywood hike or some celebrity spotting outside L.A.'s popular restaurants before meeting up with your crew at the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Hop on the 101 and ride until you come upon the Mulholland Drive exit. Then, turn onto Mulholland Highway—that’s where the real fun begins. Riding away from the busy freeway provides a calmer, rural view of the local beach towns as the roadway winds right up to the Rock Store. The one-way route takes under an hour to complete, so it’s an easy afternoon getaway.

Pacific Coast Highway

adventure motorcycle travel

The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), also known as Highway 1, is often considered the best motorcycle ride in California. There are endless possibilities on this road, thanks to its hundreds of miles of pavement stretching up and down the coastline. Much like any Pacific Coast Highway road trip , this motorcycle ride is best done over several days or in small increments to stay safe and not miss a thing. Ride from Dana Point to Long Beach , Malibu to Santa Barbara , or Big Sur to San Francisco for a small taste of what Highway 1 has to offer.

The best thing about cruising along this road is that it forces you to go slow and take in the world around you. Plus, with plenty of places to pull off and rest your legs, wander around small towns, and enjoy the beach, there’s something new to experience around every blind turn, leisurely curve, and cresting hill.

Venice Beach to Neptune’s Net

adventure motorcycle travel

As one of the state’s most beloved seafood restaurants , Neptune’s Net is a worthy stop on any coastal road trip or weekend getaway, but it’s an especially popular spot to break on a motorcycle ride. The eatery sits along the Malibu coast, about an hour’s ride from the famous Venice Beach boardwalk , making it an ideal place to get some grub and look upon the stunning ocean.

After riding around Venice, visiting the canals , and catching a glimpse of some well-known Los Angeles surf spots , it’s time to hit one of the best motorcycle roads in the state: Highway 1. Though you’ll only travel 13 miles on this incredible stretch, it’s the perfect way to relax into the ride; salty air and a jolt of energy always seem to accompany this roadway, evoking the vibe of a never-ending summer day. Just when it may feel like things couldn’t get any better, you’ll turn onto Mulholland Highway. That’s when you’ll realize you’re on one of the best motorcycle rides in Southern California.

The curves command attention, reminding riders why they love their bikes and the open road. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the novelty, but try to take it easy and enjoy every turn as it comes. Before you know it, you’ll be turning back onto Highway 1, riding past Leo Carrillo State Beach and one of the most underrated state parks in California , and driving up to Neptune’s Net. While the food is craveable and drool-worthy, perhaps the best part is knowing you get to take the winding road back home.

San Francisco to Point Reyes

adventure motorcycle travel

What’s better than cruising across the Golden Gate Bridge during a motorcycle ride from San Francisco to Point Reyes ? With challenging roadways and iconic landmarks dotting the route, this is a bucket-list ride.

Start at the San Francisco Ferry Building and ride through the Presidio for an idyllic view of the city. Then, cross the majestic Golden Gate Bridge on your way north, passing by Marin and Sausalito before meeting up with Highway 1 near Muir Beach. Keep cruising until you reach your destination in Point Reyes, or change your plans and grab some oysters farther north.

Looking for more great rides? Plan your own Route 66 motorcycle tours, stop by Four Aces Movie Ranch and Southern California’s other film sets , or find your windiest local road to explore.

This was exactly the type of training I was looking for! The pace was perfect and the drills were challenging, but not impossible. Each drill builds upon the last and by the time lunch break rolled around I had gained so much confidence and comfort with my bike that I had almost forgotten that I was riding a 600lb bike. I can honestly say that I am far more comfortable on my big old beast of a bike than I ever would have expected. Jon is a great guy who's teaching style equal parts patient and encouraging. I would recommend his class to anyone looking to get comfortable in the dirt regardless of what size bike you're riding.

Photo of Mongo A.

My 16 year old son said he wanted to learn to ride a dirt bike, and being that I haven't been on a bike in 15 years I thought it would be good to get a pro to train him. I contacted several outfits, Jon was the first to respond and maintained steady, prompt communication regarding scheduling, pricing and specific needs for my son, who's never ridden a bike before. I scheduled a private class for the first available weekend and just hoped for the best. When we arrived at Carnegie SVRA Jon was already set up and ready for us, and immediately put my son and I at ease about what would be happening and how the day would go. Jon has an affable charm that makes him easy to talk to and inspires plenty of confidence that you're in good hands. As far as the training itself goes, it was clear from the outset that SAFETY was the primary goal, which I appreciated a LOT. Putting a neophyte 16 yo on a motorcycle might be many parents worst nightmare, Jon made it all very safe and stressed throughout the day the importance of safety and being aware of what you're doing. My son started the day as someone who barely rides a bicycle, and ended the day feet up doing figure 8's and riding around the corral with confidence and aplomb. We're now working on buying a pair of dirt bikes so we can further our offroad adventures, which is 100% a testament to Jons skill as a trainer because my son entered this with typical teenager "I'm not sure I even really want to do this" and came out of it confident and assured that yes, he can do it if he wants and yes it's fun. If I can get my wife to agree to learn to ride I'll be emailing Jon without a thought. The fact that I'd put my family in Jons hands on motorcycles says it all: 5 stars, don't think a second time, hire this guy to teach you or yours to ride. NOTE: There is NO cellphone reception at Carnegie SVRA where we trained, as in zero, nada, zilch, nothing. It's not a safety issue as the starter training we did was literally a stones throw away from a state ranger office, there's a small store a short walk away and there's tons of people coming and going all day so any accidents or needs can be easily dealt with. But bring a book, because you won't be surfing facebook or anything if like me you're just there for the day with someone else.

I took the Beginner Adventure Class from Jon and Wandering Kings this weekend. The class was held at the Carnegie SVRA near Livermore, CA. There were six students in the class. Perhaps half, like myself, were beginners and the rest more experienced. Class was held on a gravel covered event area at the park. We began with basic seated riding, turning and shifting exercises and moved on to more complex drills carried out standing on the foot pegs. The need to stand up became more apparent when we got out on the trails later in the day--riding over rough terrain is much easier standing up. Jon was a great teacher. Patient and thorough. Everyone completed the course including one student who might have given up except for Jon's encouragement. If you're looking for a solid grounding in off road riding techniques in a structured, supportive atmosphere I highly recommend the beginner adventure class. For a little extra money, Wandering Kings rented me a motorcycle for the day. The bike was so fun I'm considering buying the same model!

adventure motorcycle travel

I had the opportunity to take Jon's class in April. It was my first time in any decent off-road trail. I've had my M1 license for about 24 years, but actively street riding for about the last 5 years after a 15 year layoff. And I have little, to no, dirt experience. I was expecting a basic but thorough MSF style course which was what I got. I also expected a 'try it out' session on the trails. But this is where Wandering Kings really exceeded my expectations. Not only did we go on a fun trail, Jon reminded us of the skills we just learned and how to apply for a particular section. If there was a particular section that looked challenging, we'd get tips how to navigate it. I never expected to take my big R1200GS on some of the terrain (which was new to me) Jon put us through. Nor, was I not expecting to take my own skills through it. I ended the day with my legs tired and shot, new found confidence in my bike, and the tools to go out and practice more. Jon was a wonderful and patient in structor. He saw we can take some of the skills a little faster and decided to push us more. He was simply a wonderful instructor.

Photo of Jason L.

Had an awesome experience in Jon's Beginner ADV class at Carnegie in Tracy/Livermore! Super easy to register and reserve a bike, and Jon responds to emails and questions very quickly. I started out riding dirt bikes when i was a kid and then left riding for decades but have been riding street and track for the last 2+ years so this was my first time on dirt in a long time. Jon made the learning experience fun - he is very patient and gives great instruction. During one of the exercises I was getting too confident and the front end started sliding and I almost ate gravel but miraculously I recovered and didn't fall. Jon immediately pulled me to the side to make sure I was ok and wanted me to calm my nerves before continuing. He takes us on trail rides at the end of class which was a great way to apply all that we had learned during the day. Thanks again Jon... see you out there on the trails!

adventure motorcycle travel

What a fun day!! I already ride street bikes, and have ridden a few times on the dirt, but it was so nice to get professional instruction to be able to do it right! Jon was super friendly, had a very calm and patient demeanor, and the class gave me zero stress factor! I would recommend this class to anyone who has an interest in adventure bike or dirt bike riding.

Photo of Jessica T.

Jon really went above and beyond to help me learn the fundamentals of dirt bike riding. I thought the class was a great speed, building one skill on top of the other. He is a patient and encouraging teacher. Jon helped me with the correct body positioning. By the end of the day, I was standing while shifting! My confidence is way up and I feel like I learned a lot of the basics to keep me safe. I'm very glad I took this class!

If you have the opportunity to take Jon's class, I would highly recommend it. I recently decided to explore the world of ADV riding (I've been a street rider for a couple years now) and was looking to develop proper dirt riding skills. Wandering Kings is a great way to get started. My class had 3 riders (including myself). Jon was super patient and great at explaining the goal for each drill, followed by a demo. The class follows the MSF Dirt Riding course (you can probably find the exercises somewhere on the internet) and will start from the very basics if you are an absolute beginner to motorcycles. My group consisted of folks who were already street riding on their ADV bikes, so Jon was able to move us through the basics portion fairly quickly so that we could spend more time on the meatier exercises. One thing I would recommend to Jon is including more video of the riders during class and showing us, during breaks, how we are doing and what corrections need to be made. Overall, the pace of the class was great for my small group and we had a fun time in spite of the blistering 104 degree weather. Before you attend, check the weather and consider renting a bike from him (which I did) instead of riding your own if you have a long ride home afterwards or you just aren't ready to drop your new bike. You'll definitely get a great workout from this class. I'd recommend doing some exercises with your legs (calf and quads) a couple weeks before class starts as you'll spend a lot of time standing on the footpegs for the exercises. If you are planning to do any sort of dirt riding, learning the fundamentals from Wandering Kings is a smart way to jump-start your journey.

This is my first time in adventure class, and I had the best time learning, trying out things I never thought were possible, and meeting great classmates. Jon was responsive to my call request and in answering my questions before sign up, but I did not ever expect to come away learning and doing the type of riding at the end of the day as we all did. With Jon in the lead and his tips with us, we could conquer some unbelievable terrain. I feel far more confident with taking the big GS off-road and spending a lot more time on fire roads. Jon opened up a new set of possibilities for me that I did not think was possible. That is freedom. Thank you Jon for making me a confident off-road rider.

Jon was an awesome instructor. I've had a road bike years ago, dirk bike was new to me. Jon made no assumptions, asked what and if I was comfortable with each maneuver after explaining, demonstrating, and breaking it down. The pace was matched well, I had a lot of fun and felt very safe. He is patient, and detailed. Gave me a lot of recommendations on gear selection. Afterwards we went on a short trail ride to practice the skills learned in the practice area for some practical application. I highly recommend his course. Very friendly and personal atmosphere, tailored to your level of riding. Looking forward to go riding with him some more

1. Pinnacles National Park – An escape into the wild!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Pinnacles National Park

Choose wilderness whenever possible and take a break from the constant noise and stimulation of technology.

In an age where we are constantly plugged in, spending time in nature can be incredibly refreshing and rejuvenating.

A 90-minute drive from San Jose will transport you to a completely different world. You will step into silence and stillness.

The Pinnacles National Park is a small national park located in the Salinas Valley and is known for its impressive rock formations and caves. One of the best things about this park is its diversity.

You can find everything from stunning desert landscapes to lush green forests in Pinnacles National Park. And don’t forget to keep an eye out for the park’s famous namesake – the Pinnacles!

These towering rock formations are a sight to behold, and they make for some great photos. Spend some time sitting beside a beautiful stream located a few miles from the east entrance visitor center.

Then go for a hike. You can choose to do rock climbing or just take out your binoculars and watch beautiful birds all around.

If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the California Condor. Pick an activity that suits your mood. Also, enjoy a picnic under a tree.

I have visited Pinnacles many times and loved being there every time . I love hiking to the Bear Gulch cave on the, you guessed it, Bear Gulch trail.

You can choose a different trail from easy, moderate, and strenuous ones. Also, don’t forget to stop at the visitor center and buy a souvenir for your memories .

A trip to Pinnacles is one of the best day trips from San Jose to refresh in the wilderness.

2. Muir Woods National Monument – One of the best day trips from San Jose, California

adventure motorcycle travel

Located just an hour and a half from San Jose, Muir Woods National Monument is a must-visit for nature lovers. This beautiful park is home to towering redwoods, and it’s a great place to go for a hike or a picnic.

The grandeur of the redwoods is something that will take your breath away. The tall, large, lush redwood trees soar up into a vivid blue sky.

The branches wave in the wind, and the birds fly across its crown. The woods themselves are so dense – the way the light comes in, it doesn’t shine directly in, it just filters through in pieces.

It’s a different kind of light, and it’s really beautiful. Explore these ancient giants who have stood watch over us since before recorded history began!

The scenery at Muir Woods is simply stunning. With a little sunlight and fresh air to invigorate your soul plus views so breathtaking they’ll make any photographer’s heart skip beats- this spot has it all!

3. The Monterey Bay Aquarium – An escape into another world!

adventure motorcycle travel

If you’re looking for something fun to do with the family, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is a great option for a day tour.

Deep under the sea, a colorful world exists, and if we get a chance to peep into that world for a day, the excitement knows no bound.

If you visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium, you will love watching another world in slow motion through giant glass windows.

One of my favorite exhibits in this aquarium is the 28 feet kelp forest enclosure, which is one of the tallest aquarium exhibits in the whole wide world.

If you want to take a break and relax, then head over to the food area. Sit near a window, order a sandwich and see the boats sailing by.

If you have kids, check out the play area too. Buy a souvenir from the aquarium gift shop. I remember buying a stuffed red octopus that resembles an original Octopus I found in one of the exhibits.

Tip: After exploring the Monterey Bay Aquarium, head towards Cannery Row and enjoy a delicious dinner at an open-air patio!

You can also listen to a Self-Guided Audio Tour while exploring the historic sites along Cannery Row where John Steinbeck was inspired.

Travel Tip : There are plenty of ways to enjoy a beautiful day in Monterey! Read my Monterey travel guide about  the Top things to do in Monterey .

4. Napa Valley and its scenic drives – Enjoy the luxury!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Napa Valley

Wine lovers rejoice! Napa Valley has some of the world’s best wines. It is an ideal destination for those who want to tour various vineyards while sampling wines at various tasting rooms.

The scenery is just as amazing as the wine in Napa Valley. Also, go for a scenic drive to enjoy while you sip on some delicious wine.

A drive through the Silverado trail is my favorite. This scenic route winds through the heart of Napa Valley .

You’ll find winding roads that lead through picturesque vineyards and rolling hills. You can also cruise through the back roads of Calistoga and Spring Mountain and visit the 3.4 million-year-old Petrified forest .

Walk among majestic petrified redwood giants and step back in time. You can also choose to explore the back roads of Coombsville AVA (AVA stands for American Viticultural Area), a quick scenic drive.

This is one of the most unexplored regions of the valley where you can enjoy a slower pace and a taste of country life.

Tip: Autumn is the best time to visit the wine country. I especially love seeing the spectacular fall colors in Napa Valley .

Whether it’s for a week, a day, a glass or a meal – when the time is right, experience the Napa Valley Spirit for yourself. Visit Napa Valley

5. Marin Headlands – A scenic escape!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Golden Gate Bridge, Marin Headlands

If you’re looking for a day trip with incredible views, consider exploring Marin Headlands. This area is located just north of the Golden Gate Bridge and offers stunning vistas of the Bay Area.

You can explore the area by hiking or cycling, and there are also plenty of places to stop for a picnic lunch.

6. Capitola – A quirky escape!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Capitola

Capitola is a cheery beach with candy-colored houses. It is the oldest seaside resort town in California.

If you are looking for a picturesque, quaint, and relaxing vacation destination then Capitola village fits just perfectly.

I enjoyed a leisurely walk at the Capitola wharf and witnessed a stunning sunset. I often feel that a long, wandering walk is the best way to imbibe the sights, sounds, and smells around us.

You can go fishing from Capitola Wharf (no fishing permit required when fishing off the pier). Also, look out for the frequent flowers left on the wharf’s railing that add an additional pop of color to the vibrant village scene.

I also loved the beautiful murals sprinkled in and around the Capitola village and the wharf. I love the way murals revitalize public spaces .

You’ll find excellent culinary options in this popular beachfront destination. Also, you can explore New Brighton State Beach, Lighthouse Field State Beach, and Seacliff State Beach.

If you’re lucky you might even catch a local surfing competition. Capitola is large enough to enjoy diverse activities yet small enough that it can be explored on foot.

While there are many beach towns along California’s beautiful coastline, there’s only one Capitola. I love visiting this quaint beach town and I highly recommend it both for a day trip or a weekend trip from the Bay Area .

Interesting fact: On 18 August 1961, residents in the town of Capitola, California, awoke to find sooty shearwaters slamming into their rooftops, and their streets covered with dead birds.

News reports suggested domoic acid poisoning (amnesic shellfish poisoning) as the cause. This incident inspired the iconic Alfred Hitchcock film ‘The Birds’.

7. Almaden Quicksilver County Park – A historical landmark in Northern California!

Are you looking for a day trip that is both fun and educational? Then be sure to visit Almaden Quicksilver County Park.

Located in South San Jose, Almaden Quicksilver County Park is a sprawling park that covers over 4,163 acres and is home to miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as opportunities for camping, fishing, and horseback riding.

Additionally, this popular park features several historical sites, including the remains of the New Almaden mercury mine.

During early spring , the park offers one of the most spectacular wildflower displays in the region. This park is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers, thanks to its beautiful scenery and abundance of wildlife.

Tip: Choose the Hacienda entrance to the park. It features the iconic New Almaden bell tower and outdoor mining museum in the parking lot of the Hacienda Entrance.

Also, don’t miss seeing St. Anthony Church, located within a minute of walking distance. It is one of the oldest churches in San Jose, a nd features beautiful architecture.

8. Point Reyes National Seashore – A breathtaking grandeur of nature!

adventure motorcycle travel

A trip to Point Reyes National Seashore has many layers of beauty. When I saw large herds of tule elk, native to California, basking in the sun on a green valley, it gave me a bucolic feeling.

While walking through the Cypress tree tunnel , a must-see place, on the way to Point Reyes Lighthouse, I felt that I have left the cacophony of the modern world somewhere afar.

I loved the wildness of the Pacific when I spent a day at Drakes Beach. With the beautiful view of the vast expanse of the Pacific ocean from above, Point Reyes National Seashore is a gem.

While walking to Point Reyes Lighthouse, I got to see a gorgeous sunset. The white visitor center sparkled along the way ❤️.

I greeted the twilight with the symphony of the evening wind. This natural sanctuary is a refuge for us mortal souls.

I would highly recommend savoring all the attractions slowly while exploring the bucolic and the wild.

9. Half Moon Bay – A top day trip from San Jose, California

adventure motorcycle travel

I always enjoy a day trip to Half Moon Bay , a small city on the California coast. I think one of the best things about a day trip to Half Moon Bay is that it’s so close, but still feels like an escape.

With all its breathtaking views and activities waiting around every corner, Half Moon Bay is a perfect destination for a day trip from San Jose.

A few of my favorite spots are the Ritz Carlton – a luxurious hotel located right on the coast with free coastal access, Seal Cove Cypress Tree Tunnel in Moss Beach, the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, and Cowell-Purisima Trail for a beautiful hike.

Enjoy a virtual hike at Cowell-Purisma Trail below 💚

10. 17 Mile Drive – A best and must-do day trip from San Jose, California

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, 17mile drive, Lone Cypress

The 17-mile drive is one of the most scenic drives in the world, and it’s a must-visit from San Jose. The drive winds through dramatic coastal cliffs, snow-white beaches, mystical forests, and iconic golf courses.

You’ll get to see some of the most beautiful sights in the area, including the inspiring Lone Cypress, Crocker Grove – home to the largest and oldest Monterey Cypress trees in existence , look at the untouched beauty at  Fanshell Beach, Point Joe, and Spanish Bay.

At the end of your drive, take a stroll by the beautiful golf course and the Pacific Ocean at The Lodge – a luxurious Pebble beach resort.

The coastal access is open to the public. Finish your day after dining at one of the restaurants at The Lodge at Pebble Beach.

Tip: Admission to 17-Mile Drive is $10 per vehicle. Check out the 17-mile drive map .

Fun fact: Novelist Robert Louis Stevenson was said to have roamed the hills and dunes that now shape the first five holes at Spyglass Hill.

The stunning scenery was supposedly his inspiration for the book,  Treasure Island .

11. Palo Alto – the birthplace of silicon valley

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Hp Garage, Birthplace of Silicon Valley

If you want to imbibe some Silicon Valley vibes, then head to Palo Alto and explore its various corners.

Palo Alto is home to some of the biggest tech companies in the world. Visit HP Garage, the birthplace of silicon valley tucked away on a quiet, tree-lined residential street near Stanford University.

The HP Garage stands today as the enduring symbol of innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit. You can visit the Stanford University campus and the Cantor Center for Visual Arts .

You will have a great time, believe me.

12. Pacific Grove – the Butterfly town

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Pacific Grove

Pacific Grove, the small town is beautiful all year-long. But the magic carpet or the blooming ice plant that graces Pacific Grove’s shoreline at Perkins Park during the spring makes it one of the perfect destinations for spring break .

Also, from October through February, thousands of monarch butterflies migrate to Pacific Grove, cluster together on pine, cypress, and eucalyptus trees in the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary.

Due to this unique phenomenon, Pacific Grove is nicknamed Butterfly Town and gives us another reason to visit Pacific Grove during the holiday season.

Another quirky place I like in Pacific Grove is a vibrant butterfly house . You have to see this in person ❤️. I especially enjoy its laid-back vibe – a Xanax for the soul!

Tip: Mark the exact address of the house full of butterfly sculptures and artwork – 📍309 9th St, Pacific Grove, CA 93950

13. Carmel-by-the-Sea – An escape to a beautiful beach town!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Carmel-by-the-sea

Another great option for a day trip from San Jose is Carmel-by-the-Sea , one of America’s Top Beach Towns.

This charming town is known for its art galleries, quaint shops, and world-famous golf courses, givi ng it a disti nctive Europea n vibe.

Exceptional dining, wine-tasting rooms, and boutiques make it an ideal place to relax. You can spend the day exploring or relaxing on Carmel Beach.

If you are in the mood to go for a hike, then take the scenic road starting at 8th Avenue and ending near Martin Way.

It meanders above the bluff overlooking Camel Beach through sculptured Monterey Cypress trees.

Travel Tip: There are plenty of ways to enjoy a beautiful day in Carmel-by-the-Sea! Read my travel guide about   the Top things to do in Carmel .

14. Stockton – An offbeat day trip from San Jose, California

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Stockton, Wat Dhammararam

Explore Stockton on a day trip from San Jose. Stockton is a city on the San Joaquin River, in California’s Central Valley, the most productive agricultural region of Califor nia and one of the most productive in the world.

There’s a lot to see and do in Stockton, California. My favorite is Wat Dhammararam, a Cambodian Buddhist temple in Stockton.

This temple features over 90 colorful and larger-than-life jewel-encrusted statues that celebrate the life and story of the Buddha, in a Cambodian setting.

One thing that I loved the most was the sculptures depicting the scenes which Gautama Buddha witnessed when he was a prince.

I have read about those scenes and realizations of Buddha many times but seeing them in the form of sculptures was remarkable.

Also don’t miss Pixie Woods – a lovely amusement park that is perfect for kids of all ages. Discover Pixie Woods’ enchanted forest and magical pathways and be transformed by a world of imagination and wonder.

If you love doing a picnic in the park, then Louis Park beside Pixie Woods is a perfect option.

15. West Cliff Drive and Natural Bridges State Bridge in Santa Cruz – Oh nature!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, West Cliff Drive

If you are not in the mood for a long drive then here is an easy day trip from San Jose . I n less tha n a n hour, you can reach West Cliff Drive – a scenic, 3-mile promenade i n Sa nta Cruz .

While walking the path I often stop to take in the refreshing views of the Pacific. Soak up the sun and do some people-watching before heading to the Natural Bridges State Beach.

This park and beach is an excellent vantage point for viewing shorebirds, migrating whales, as well as seals and Sea otters playing offshore.

Further along the beach, public access tidepools offer a glimpse into life beneath the sea, while low tides reveal sea stars, shore crabs, sea anemones, and other colorful ocean life.

The park also includes a large area of coastal scrub and grasslands, with bright native wildflowers in the spring.

Tip: Visit Natural Bridges Monarch Trail from late October and all of November to go for a walk and observe the monarch butterflies which flock here in late autumn and stay here throughout the winter months.

16. Golden Gate Park, San Francisco – A beautiful park in a beautiful city!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Sculpture garden at De Young Museum in San Francisco

If you’re looking for a fun day out in San Francisco, look no further than Golden Gate Park. With plenty of activities to keep you busy, it’s easy to spend a whole day here without getting bored.

To start your day, make your way to the Music Concourse. This beautiful open space is home to a variety of concerts and events throughout the year.

You can also find a number of food trucks here, so it’s the perfect spot for a quick lunch. After you’ve eaten, wander over to the California Academy of Sciences .

This world-renowned museum is a must-see for any visitor to San Francisco. It’s home to a variety of exhibits, including an aquarium, planetarium, rainforest, and natural history museum.

Next, head to the Japanese Tea Garden. This stunning garden is one of the most popular attractions in Golden Gate Park, and it’s easy to see why.

With its pagodas, ponds, and koi fish, it’s a true haven of peace and tranquility. Just beside the Japanese Garden is the de Young Museum, San Francisco’s oldest museum.

De Young Museum is a fine arts museum and is perfect for intellectual stimulation, reflection, and contemplation.

Also, go for a walk in their sculpture garden and enjoy a cup of coffee at the de Young Café in their outdoor setting.

There’s plenty to see inside the Golden Gate Park, so make sure you set aside enough time to do it justice. No matter what you choose to do, Golden Gate Park is a must-visit for anyone traveling to San Francisco.

Tip: If you’re feeling adventurous, why not rent a bike and explore the rest of the park? 🙂

17. Museums in San Francisco – For enriching day trips!

adventure motorcycle travel

If you are someone who always seeks to expand her frontier of knowledge then museums are often a nice place to start with.

I love how museums are like a book you can open up and always find new things inside, that inspire and stimulate.

I like getting lost in someone else’s world especially when all my own proposals don’t seem quite as feasible at times 😉.

The various museums in San Francisco with their unparalleled exhibits on art & science alike lure me. I have bee n to almost all the exciting museums in the city.

I spent delightful days exploring both classic-style museums and new-era immersive exhibits in San Francisco.

So, if you want enriching day trips on any of your weekends, choose any one of the museums below or all and explore. Here are my best picks.

One of my favorite places to go when I want something different is the San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art, or SFMOMA because they have amazing exhibits featuri ng the best of moder n art!

Exploratorium

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Buckyball, Exploratorium

The Exploratorium in San Francisco is one of the top 10 science museums in the United States and provides a fertile platform for curious minds.

It encourages everyone to wonder – What? How? Why? Abstract concepts of science are displayed in an easy-to-understand format and are highly interactive. Book tickets for Exploratorium .

Tip: After spending a whole day exploring a museum, if you have some extra time, how about a fun activity?

How about a cable car ride at night 💖 ? Cable cars have come to symbolize San Francisco along with the Golden Gate Bridge.

A cable car ride in San Francisco at night is definitely an experience you won’t forget. The city is lit up and the views are spectacular.

The cars themselves are quite old and rattly, but that only adds to the charm. Make sure to hold on tight though, as these cars can move pretty fast!

Tip: Explore the Exploratorium at night with special Thursday programming (18+)

18. Explore the Presidio of San Francisco and spend a cultural evening in the city

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, The open lawns of the Presidio, San Francisco with the iconic red share chairs!

If you want to combine outdoor activities along with indoor ones on your day trip then Presidio in San Francisco is a great option.

This former military base is now a national park, and there’s plenty to see and do there.

One of the highlights of Presidio is the Main Parade Ground, where you’ll find rows of bright red chairs, affectionately called “share chairs”.

It’s a great place to relax with unbeatable Golden Gate Bridge views , and during the warmer months, a great spot for a picnic.

Another popular spot and my favorite in Presidio is the Lovers Lane trail and Wood Line to the right. Wood Line is an iconic work by one of the world’s most renowned artists, Andy Goldsworthy.

Made up of eucalyptus branches sourced from various park projects that required tree removal, Wood Line is more than 1,200 feet in length.

You have to see this outdoor art installation of trees that winds their way through the peaceful eucalyptus forest in person.

This secluded spot is perfect for a romantic stroll. Finally, don’t forget to visit the Walt Disney Family Museum while you’re in Presidio.

This unique museum is dedicated to the life and work of Walt Disney, and it’s a must-see for fans of his movies and cartoons.

Tip: After spending a beautiful day at Presidio, you can catch a show of the San Francisco Ballet or Listen to live music from the San Francisco Symphony at the Davies Symphony Hall.

You can also check for ongoing exhibitions in the city. I remember visiting the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit – a unique experience.

19. Big Sur – An unmissable escape from San Jose!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Big Sur, Bixby Creek Bridge

If you are in the mood for a long drive, then choose Highway 1 and drive to Big Sur , one of the best places for a day trip from San Jose.

Also, this is the best way to experience California’s breathtaking coast. With the Pacific Ocean as a constant companion, a sense of vastness permeates into our being while driving here.

The winding curves will take your breath away with their stunning views. Every turn here is beautiful. You can always choose to pull over at numerous turnouts and take in the amazing views.

One place where you must stop is Bixby Creek Bridge. After all, it is one of the most photographed bridges in California!

If you want to go on a hike, especially after sitting inside the car for long, then head towards the Pfeiffer Falls trail in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.

If you don’t feel like hiking, watch the water rush by in the Pfeiffer-Redwood Creek and relish a tasty dinner or afternoon coffee and snack in the Big Sur Lodge .

Perhaps it was one of the best coffee spots on this drive. If it is a sunny day and you enjoy outdoor sitting arrangements with stunning views, Nepenthe is also a great option for a sumptuous lunch.

20. Gilroy – Garlic Capital of the World!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Gilroy Gardens

Gilroy is a small town located in Santa Clara County, California. Gilroy is known for its garlic crop and a large garlic festival that takes place every year featuring various garlicky foods such as garlic ice cream, leading to the city’s nickname, the Garlic Capital of the World!

If you’re looking for a fun day trip to do with your family or friends, Gilroy is a great option! Some of the main attractions in Gilroy include Gilroy gardens, Mt. Madonna County Park , Mt. Madonna Center, and Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple.

Gilroy Gardens is a garden-themed family theme park. The park has 22 rides and 5 attractions and is perfect for some fun and run for the little ones and the whole family.

Don’t miss Axel Erlandson’s Circus Trees and a train ride through the garden! Mount Madonna Center is a nature preserve and retreat center that offers hiking trails, yoga classes, and other outdoor activities.

After spending a couple of hours in Gilroy Gardens, head towards the Mount Madonna Center – a peaceful haven where you can step back, slow down, contemplate, and get engaged in deeper conversations with members there.

You can also join one of their yoga classes. Please reserve your spot there before going. I loved this center and the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple located inside.

I am not a particularly religious person but loved the spiritual and serene atmosphere.

Tip: If you are in the mood to go shopping then visit Gilroy Premium Outlets . It is one of Northern California’s largest outlet centers, where you’ll find impressive savings at more than 145 factory outlet stores.

21. Downtown San Jose – A world apart!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Downtown San Jose, The Tech Museum of Innovation

If you are in a mood to explore a town on foot then downtown San Jose is a great place to spend a day. There are plenty of things to see and do here. Explore them all at your pace.

Take a stroll through the Plaza de Cesar Chavez.

It is a popular place to hang out as it is located near museums such as The Tech Interactive and the illustrious San Jose Museum of Art. The park regularly attracts visitors with its musical performances and festivals.

I love the beautiful water fountains, flower beds, and even an open-air theater.

The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose is a must-see place for everyone, whether you are interested in technology or not.

At the heart of silicon valley, where new ideas emerge and lead us and have had such a profound influence on the world, a museum such as this is indeed expected.

All the exhibits here are interesting. Innovations in Health Care and Body Motion are two of my favorite exhibits. This museum entertains, educates, involves, and inspires. Book tickets for The Tech Museum

Also plan to visit the San Jose Museum of Art, located at a walkable distance from the Tech Museum of Innovation.

This premier modern and contemporary art museum in Silicon Valley has inspired me in different ways. I love seeing their well-thought exhibitions, all year round.

Whenever I visit this art museum, I am struck by the hanging colorful glass chandeliers by Dale Chihuly. Also do n’t miss the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph located in Downtown San Jose.

Tip: If you are tired after exploring the city head for a delicious dinner in one of the innumerable restaurants in downtown San Jose.

22. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, Whalers Cove

If you’re looking for a beautiful and serene nature escape among South Bay State Parks , Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is the place for you.

Among all of California’s 280 state parks, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve has often been called the “crown jewel of the State Park System.”

Select a sunny day and go for a hike. It offers a wild, majestic landscape laced with 14 meandering trails. If you choose a trail along the shoreline, as I did, you will get to see innumerable seabirds along the way.

The soothing serenity and abundance of natural beauty here will nourish the painter, poet, or photographer in you. If you want to spice up the day with some adventure, then go for scuba diving.

The sea near Point Lobos is considered to be one of the richest underwater habitats in the world.

Don’t miss seeing Whalers Cove, a small cabin built by Chinese fishermen which is now a cultural history museum.

23. Oakland – A gorgeous city!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Lake Merritt, Oakland

Oakland is a beautiful city, and it’s definitely worth a day trip from Sa n Jose! There are so many things to see and do in Oakland, you could easily spend an entire day there. Here are some of the highlights.

Lake Merritt and its surroundings are perfect for a leisurely stroll. I often visit Lake Merritt especially around sunset for beautiful sunset photographs.

The reflection of the buildings, trees, and boats look stunning during the golden hour. But that doesn’t mean you have nothing else to do during the day.

Visit the adjacent Bonsai garden and spend some time savoring the beauty and diversity of these tiny plants.

Then visit the Oakland Museum of California to know the history of California and how it has evolved.

It is the best museum o n California by far, and you will be humbled and proud to know about how much influence it has had on the world! Don’t forget to check out the museum shop for some pretty cool souvenirs.

After exploring the museum, visit The Cathedral of Christ the Light , a new age church where Jesus Christ is created usi ng digital projectio ns.

Next head to Jack London Square. This is a great spot to take in the views of the Bay Area. You can also wander around the shops and restaurants, or take a boat ride.

24. Berkeley – The world-famous u niversity tow n near San Jose, California

25. Computer History Museum and Googleplex i n Mou ntai n View – An enriching escape!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Computer History Museum

Technology is changing the geography of our lives. Since we live in the heart of Silicon Valley, it is interesting to know the long history of technology and its revolutionary impact on the world.

Visit the Computer History Museum in Mountain View and discover stories and exhibits that inform and inspire, or satisfy your curiosity with hands-on activities.

The story of computing is invigorating and is driven by the human passion for tinkering, inventing, and solving difficult problems.

Spend a day here and you will go back home thinking about human ingenuity. Silicon Valley’s innovative tech culture is built up around a belief that Change is Good .

While exploring this museum, I was thinking about the changes brought about by technology to every aspect of our lives.

The pace of change confounds me often. This museum gave me a fertile ground to reflect upon many profound things directly related to our lives.

After exploring the Computer History Museum, head over to Googleplex in Mountain View – the corporate headquarters of Google. Enjoy a cool sculpture garden there before heading back home.

26. Healdsburg – For a taste of wi ne cou ntry i n So noma Cou nty

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Healdsburg is a city located in Sonoma County

If you want to plan an incredible wine country day trip in a quaint, yet mighty town then Healdsburg, located at the north end of Sonoma County is matchless.

Open outdoors with stunning natural scenery, delicious food and wine, and warm hospitality here is a true celebration of California life.

Settle in a relaxed atmosphere at any of the vineyards and escape to happiness. I highly recommend La Crema Estate at Sarlee’s Vineyard and Angeline – Martin Ray Vineyards & Winery .

If you are planning a trip here in spring don’t miss seeing the beautiful garden named Richard’s Grove at Sarlee’s Vineyard. Stroll through Healdsburg’s charming downtown district, filled with art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants.

Be sure to stop by Healdsburg’s lovely central Plaza, a beautiful public square, which was named by Travel + Leisure Magazine as one of “America’s Most Beautiful Town Squares.”

When people think of wine country, they typically think of Napa Valley. Napa and Sonoma are collectively known as California wine country, but despite being close to each other—only separated by a mountain range—both wine capitals are very different from each other. Sonoma’s wineries are more laid-back, less crowded and commercialized than Napa. Travel Pulse

27. Davenport, Santa Cruz – One of my favorite day trips from San Jose, California

If you’re looking to slow down a bit then head towards Davenport, California.

Nine miles north of Santa Cruz, Davenport’s coastline is carpeted with mustard fields in spring and includes sweeping vistas of the Pacific Ocean.

Locals call this area SlowCoast. Relax at Davenport beach and see unique rock formations, including the “Shark Fin,” at Davenport Cove Beach.

Slip into this relaxing realm below through an Instagram reel 💙

28. Lick Observatory, Mount Hamilton – An escape to a world of starry light and dark!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Lick Observatory, Mount Hamilton

After your daily work, have you ever looked up and got lost in the beauty of the moon or the immense night sky? I am sure you have.

So, plan a drive to Lick Observatory, which is the world’s first permanently occupied mountain-top observatory.

Come here and get lost in the world of cosmos through its various exhibits. Listen to a short informal talk about Lick history while taking a look at the Great Lick Refractor in the 36-inch telescope dome for free .

Also, don’t forget to take a short walk to the Shane Dome to view the 120-inch Reflector. The Shane reflector is one of the major telescopes used to discover extrasolar planets.

Enjoy a cup of coffee in the adjacent garden and enjoy the view of the Santa Clara Valley from the parking lot at 4,209 feet.

29. Moss Landing State Beach and Salinas – A literary escape!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, National Steinbeck center

How can we live without our lives? How will we know it’s us without our past? John Steinbeck

Remember this beautiful and profound sentence?

This is by John Steinbeck, a winner of the Nobel Prize in literature. Spend a few hours exploring the National Steinbeck Center and I am sure you would love it.

Buy one of his books, the Grapes of Wrath being my favorite, from the museum and head towards Moss Landing State Beach.

In Moss Landing State Beach , relax and feel the sun while reading the book you bought. This is definitely off-beat but the creative indulgence is oh so satisfying!

I love this beach very much because it is easily accessible from the parking lot and is never very crowded. Later, you can also opt for whale watching, one of the must-do activities in Monterey .

Drive to Monterey Old Fisherman’s Wharf, where the boats set sail into the harbor with breathtaking sea views. Book your tickets for Monterey Bay Whale Watching Tour.

Tip: Enjoy delicious Fish & Chips at Phil’s Fish Market & Eatery. 📍 7600 Sandholdt Rd, Moss Landing, CA 95039

30. Steam Train Ride at Roaring Camp Railways – A bit of fu n a nd adventure!

30 Best Day Trips from San Jose, California, Travel Realizations, Steam Train Ride at Roaring Camp Railways

If you are in the mood to do something fu n a nd adve nturous, consider a steam train ride at Roaring Camp Railways.

Embark on a steam train and ride through the towering green trees. and see how the light filter through the leaves.

Listen to the sound of the train rolling over the track. Within minutes, you will feel you are far away from the familiar cityscape.

The puffing sound of the train as steam is blown through the stack and the hissing of the air pump will take you away to a world of a bygone era.

After the refreshing ride, explore the adjacent Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park for an invigorating hike amid the towering redwood trees. A ride on a steam train ride is fun for a child and adult alike.
