Learn more about Croatia

Best time to visit croatia.

Croatia's peak season runs between July and August, with temperatures in the high 60s or mid 80s on the coast. But in this region, you can expect plenty of sunshine from May to October, which are the best times to visit if you want to take advantage of Croatia's beautiful beaches and islands. The inland areas are also hot in the summer but can get cold in the winter with low temperatures and snowfall. Winter on the coast is milder and frequent rain can be expected.

Culture and customs

Generally, Croatians are very proud of their country and cultural heritage. While this may not be obvious in everyday life, the Slavic heritage of Croatian people becomes more evident during festivals and national holidays, where cities and villages come to life with traditional costume, folk music and feasts. While most of Croatia's population are Roman Catholic, there are also groups of people who identify as Serbian Orthodox, Muslim, Protestant and Jewish. Having endured war, hardship and frequent earthquakes, the people of Croatia have a great amount of national pride and connection to their country and family. It's quite common for extended families to live together and children to remain close to their parents well into adulthood. Time for leisure and family is highly valued, particularly along the coast, where many offices end their day at 3pm.

Eating and drinking

Croatian cuisine   is heavily influenced by its surrounding countries. Separated from Italy by the Adriatic Sea, cuisine along the coast tends to have more of a Mediterranean flair. Fish and seafood are integral to many coastal dishes, such as brodet (fish stew) and crni rizot (black risotto made with squid). Homemade pasta and olive oil are also dietary staples. Further inland, you’ll find heartier dishes with Austrian, Hungarian, and Turkish influences such as cobanac (a goulash-like stew) and kulen (paprika-seasoned sausage).

Foodies will definitely want to visit Istria – home to award-winning olive oil, wild asparagus, rare white truffles and excellent wines – which has gained an international reputation as a foodie destination.

Croatians enjoy their beer (Karlovacko and Ozujsko are two of the most popular local brews), but they love their kava (coffee). Take a cue from the locals and spend a morning people-watching at a cafe over a kava – it’s a Saturday morning tradition in Zagreb. Rakija (brandy) is the spirit of choice, with many restaurants offering a small glass before a meal. Another favorite is Pelinkovac, a must-try bitter liqueur.

Things to try in Croatia

1. Pasticada

A slow-cooked beef dish usually served with gnocchi. This Dalmatian staple can be found in many restaurants in this region.

2. Manestra

There are many variations to Istria’s hearty take on minestrone soup, but it usually includes beans, corn and meat.

3. Paski sir

This popular hard cheese is produced exclusively from the milk of sheep on the Island of Pag. It gets its unique pungent taste from the sheep’s aromatic herb diet.

These grilled skinless sausages are common throughout Croatia and are usually served with onions and ajvar (a red bell pepper relish) on a flatbread

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with  Bosnia and Herzegovina ,  Slovenia ,  Hungary ,  Serbia  and  Montenegro , Croatia benefits from more than 5,000 km of coastline that spans along the Adriatic Sea. In addition to the mainland, Croatia also has many islands, some inhabited, some not. Croatia's terrain is very diverse and varies from flat plains to low mountains and highlands, limestone karst cliffs, wetlands, lakes and forests of cypress. Nature reserves and wetland areas are home to large populations of migratory birds, deer, bats and bears. Visitors will also see much of the land is used for agriculture with vineyards, lavender fields, olive groves and orchards being prevalent in rural areas. Croatia's cities, while developed, have managed to maintain a high level of charm with cobblestone streets, ancient housing, historic squares and heritage buildings being preserved and still used by the current population.

History and government

Early history.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the land now known as Croatia has been occupied by humans since the Stone Age. Croatia's geographical position in  Europe  allowed a great amount of influence from neighboring regions, with tribes and people from different cultures and groups making their mark. The first Kingdom of Croatia was formed in 925 but by the 12th century Croatia had formed a union with Hungary, with a Hungarian King instated as leader of both territories. During the 15th century, Croatia lost territory to the Ottoman Empire and, in later centuries, once again came under Hungarian rule. Evidence of these many cultural influences can be seen in the architecture, cuisine and archaeological ruins of contemporary Croatia.

Recent history

Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia formed a union in 1918 to create the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, but the occupation of Axis forces during World War II lead to the creation of the Independent State of Croatia, which only lasted a couple of years during the war. By the end of the war in 1945, Croatia had become a Socialist Republic (within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, together with Bosnia, Serbia, Slovenia, Macedonia and Montenegro), with the constitution of 1963 attempting to alleviate tensions surrounding the balance of power between Serbians and Croats. By 1980, after the death of President Tito (founder of modern Yugoslavia), economic and political difficulties resulted in a near collapse of government. What followed was years of conflict, polarity and political turmoil. The referendum of 1991 resulted in an overwhelming vote for independence, with Croatia and Slovenia declaring independence from Yugoslavia in June of the same year. Much armed conflict followed and lasted until 1995, leading to great loss of civilian life and displacement, creating large populations of refugees. However, the last two decades have been a time of peace and reconciliation for the people of Croatia and the country even joined the European Union in 2013.

Top 10 historic buildings of Croatia

1. cathedral of the assumption of the virgin mary.

One of Zagreb’s most visited historic sites, this grand neo-Gothic cathedral has been renovated and reconstructed many times since it was originally built in the 13th century. With massive twin spires, a marble interior and 800-year-old treasury, this is a monumental masterpiece.

2. Church of St Donatus

Considered one of the most impressive examples of early Byzantine architecture, this church in Zadar was built way back in the 9th century. With much historical value, its simplistic, circular design is quite unlike other buildings in Croatia, making it a standout, must-see church in a country with so many churches and cathedrals to see.

3. Croatian National Theatre

Built in 1895, this national treasure located in Zagreb is an elegant example of neo-Baroque style architecture. Visitors lucky enough to catch an opera, ballet or classical music concert here will be able to revel in all the fine details, from the luxe furnishings to the excellent acoustics.

4. Diocletian’s Palace

One of Split’s main attractions, this UNESCO World Heritage monument is considered one of the best-preserved Roman palaces in the world. The sprawling complex is home to many fine examples of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, so visitors will be able to admire open-air courtyards, marble arches, columns, gates and walls from a variety of different periods.

5. Cathedral of St Lovro

This cathedral located 30 minutes from Split is well known for its distinct Romanesque portal crafted by one of Croatia's most celebrated sculptors, Radovan. Mythological creatures and biblical figures all feature heavily, with saints, lions, sirens and centaurs all gracing the spectacular doorways.

6. Rector’s Palace

Also known as Dubrovnik Museum, Rector’s Palace is an impressive building in itself. With soaring arches, period furniture and a dramatic staircase, this structure steals the show from the museum exhibits it holds within.

7. Dubrovnik Synagogue

Reported to be the second oldest synagogue in Europe and the world’s oldest Sefardic synagogue still in use, Dubrovnik’s synagogue is still a place for the local Jewish community to worship on holy days. Sustaining damage from earthquakes and wars, this small but well-cared-for structure stills stands today due to its historical value and unique design.

8. Marco Polo Tower

While not the most elaborate or opulent building in Croatia, the Marco Polo Tower of Korcula has much historical significance. It is believed that Marco Polo was born in this medieval, walled city and this tower named in his honor rises above the town as a reminder of his legacy. Climb to the top for phenomenal views and panoramic photo opportunities.

9. Franciscan Monastery

Featuring 14th-century cloisters, intricately carved columns and a striking, sculptured facade this Dubrovnik wonder is also home to the third oldest pharmacy in Europe, so you can get a prescription filled while seeing the sights.

10. Trakoscan Castle

This lovely castle located in northern Croatia was inhabited from the 13th century right up until the 1940s. Featuring all good things a castle should have - including a dungeon, hunting room and tower - visiting here is like stepping back to a time when castles weren’t just historical monuments, but actual places to live.

Top places to visit in Croatia

1. islands of kornati.

There are plenty of enchanting islands along the coast of Croatia but perhaps none more so than the secluded Kornati, a collection of 89 spectacular islands full of islets and reef systems just waiting to be explored. Known as the largest and densest archipelago in the Adriatic region, the Kornatis present the perfect way to spend a couple of days with beautiful bays to swim in and fascinating nature parks to adventure through.

2. Dubrovnik

Steeped in both beauty and history, Dubrovnik’s UNESCO-listed Old Town is, quite simply, the undisputed jewel of the Dalmatian Coast. With its beautiful white stone-covered buildings, tiled-roof houses, and limestone streets all encompassed within sea-facing city walls, this city is full of charm and splendour. Whether you want to wander the bustling streets on foot or view the town from the sparkling water of the Adriatic Sea, Dubrovnik is one character-filled city you can’t miss. Wander the cobblestoned streets of Dubrovnik on our 15 day Dubrovnik to Athens tour or on our 15 day Dubrovnik to Bled tour.

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Dubrovnik then setting sail for the small island of Lokrum is the best way to achieve it. Covered in lush vegetation and surrounded by sparkling blue waters you’re never going to want to leave, this sleepy island presents the perfect opportunity to relax under the warm Croatian sun. Whether you want to soak up the rays on rocks by the sea or wander through the Botanical Garden, you’re guaranteed to find peace within Lokrum’s stunning surroundings. Sail to the small island of Lokrum on our 10 day Dubrovnik to Venice tour or on our 8 day Explore Croatia adventure.

Another day, another magnificent city in Croatia to adventure through; this time, it’s Zadar. Once the capital city of Dalmatia, Zadar boasts a rich heritage that’s easily visible when you start wandering its ancient buildings such as the Roman Forum and St Donatus’ Church. From walking through cultural exhibitions at the Museum of Church Art and exploring the spirited fish markets at the port to admiring the ‘Greeting to the Sun’, a modern monument dedicated to the sun, this energetic destination will surely capture your heart (and your camera’s remaining storage). Explore historic Zadar on our 8 day Croatia & Slovenia tour.

Packed with a rich history you’re going to want to explore, Korcula Island is a hidden gem with as many beautiful sights and ancient buildings as some of the bigger islands, such as Hvar, but without the crowds. Offering a lot of sun to soak up, plenty of golden sandy beaches to lie on, and an abundance of sparkling blue waters to swim in, this seaside destination is truly one-of-a-kind. And you can't forget about the food. From traditional beef stews to the sweet delicacy of travarica, you'll never go hungry in Korcula. Marvel at the sights of Korcula on our 8 day Croatian Coastal Cruising or on our 7 day Cycle Croatia tour.

Split may be Croatia’s second largest city (after Zagreb) but it’s first when it comes to personality and soul with historic streets, a World-Heritage listed palace, and a vibrant mix of shops, cafes, and restaurants scattered throughout its picturesque Old Town. From sipping on frothy kava at a table on the Riva waterfront promenade to listening to street musicians filling ancient courtyards with their sweet sounds, Split promises to take your Croatian tour to another level. Eat your way through Split on our 11 day Slovenia & Croatia Real Food Adventure.

7. Plitvice Lakes National Park

If you thought Croatia couldn’t get any more beautiful, only one visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park is enough to make you change your mind. Gaining World Heritage listed status 20 years ago, this spectacular park covers 19 hectares of wooded hills and 16 turquoise-covered lakes all connected by a series of waterfalls that won’t hesitate to take your breath away. Whether you want to spot some wild animals (think wolves, deer, and birds), wander through the park’s forest vegetation, or simply marvel at the captivating landscape that surrounds you, this dazzling park will be etched in your mind forever. Walk through Plitvice Lakes National Park on our 26 day Budapest to Rome adventure or on our 17 day Dubrovnik to Rome tour.

If culture’s what you’re after, then visiting the spirited city of Zagreb should be high on your Croatia bucket list. Bursting with museums such as the quirky Museum of Broken Relationships or the more traditional Croatian Museum of Naïve Art, and historic locations such as the Mirogoj Cemetery and Lotrščak Tower, you’ll never run out of things to do in Zagreb. Perfect for exploring on foot, this lively destination blends the best of crafts, cuisine, and culture for an adventure you’ll want to relive over and over again. Absorb the Croatian culture on our 19 day Budapest to Venice tour or on our 10 day Dubrovnik to Venice tour.

On the surface, Osijek may seem like just another breathtaking Croatian town but as soon as you start wandering its streets full of grand buildings and popular landmarks, you’ll see why it deserves to be explored. With a laidback atmosphere and bubbling personality, this town will easily have you entranced from its many cafes and restaurants lining the Drava River to its captivating medieval structures. Spend your time walking through the Museum of Slavonia or strolling down the European Avenue for an in-depth look at this remarkable region. Stroll the streets of Osijek on our 29 day Vienna to Dubrovnik tour or on our 15 day Balkan Adventure.

If Dubrovnik is known as the ‘Jewel of the Dalmatian Coast’ then Hvar is the ‘Queen of the Dalmatian Islands’ thanks to its picture-perfect town full of wonderfully preserved Renaissance facades. Boasting plenty to do including admiring the views of the town and the Adriatic Sea from the Spanjola Fortress, wandering the streets full of unusual boutiques and interesting galleries, and sipping on cocktails at a bar by the water, this spectacular island town is like something straight out of a fairytale.

Croatia has an interesting mix of quaint outdoor markets, modern malls and hip clothing boutiques. There's plenty of options that make better souvenirs than the usual lurid magnets or tourist t-shirts.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. The   United States   and   Canada  generally have strict customs laws.

Things to buy in Croatia

3. Natural cosmetics

Croatia has many brands of natural soap, body butter and shower gel derived from ingredients like olive oil, goat's milk, lavender, almond oil and seaweed.

The real deal

If you are coming to Croatia I heartily recommend Roberto P / Soul of Croatia to make your trip memorable and trouble free. Robi is an excellent organizer and very knowledgeable guide. He designed a cycling trip that gave me and my husband just the right amount of challenge and I finished feeling great. Croatia is so beautiful and he is incredibly generous with true insider info and connections. I will never forget the experiences and memories he made for us - and I have never before laughed so hard on a guided trip. I truly felt like he brought the Soul of Croatia to us.

Amazing vacation in Croatia

First time that we've been moved to make a post like this but just returned from a week long cycling trip in Croatia that is easily among the best vacations we have ever taken largely due to the expert organization and guidance provided by Robi of Soul of Croatia. Every day was truly a new adventure highlighted by beautiful rides, exceptional views, gorgeous weather, wonderful local food and people and Robi's commitment to ensuring that we fully enjoyed and appreciated the diversity and rich history that this beautiful country offers. Like everybody else in our group, we cannot wait to make a return trip and highly recommend Robi/Soul of Croatia to any others contemplating a trip to this part of the world. Thanks again Robi and we look forward to seeing you again soon. Michael and Joanne K

A Most Amazing Cycling Trip

Our cycling trip with Roberto was one of the best trips I have ever taken. And this is the second cycling trip I have done with Roberto. I didn’t possibly think he could outdo the excellence of the first trip, but Roberto did. The second trip also exceeded all of my expectations. Our group of eight friends were taken on a private Cycling tour carefully customized to meet all of our needs. Roberto picked daily Cycling adventures which brought us to exquisitely beautiful places in Croatia, and each day was more beautiful than the last. Roberto’s knowledge of Croatia, his connections to the local people, his passion for the history and customs of every place that we visited, could not be replicated by anyone else. Roberto personally took us on a tour of the old city of Dubrovnik, as well as the city of Ston, and he constantly provided us with knowledge of the local areas. Roberto chose restaurants for us, which were excellent and which served traditional delicious Croatian cuisine. Roberto had personal connections to many of the restaurants and wineries we visited which meant we were provided with the highest level of service. Both before, and after our trip, Roberto assisted us with any other excursions and bookings we were interested in. After our trip was complete he personally took us on a boat tour where we swam in amazing caves. It was an exceptional trip, and I cannot recommend Roberto and Soul of Croatia highly enough to anybody who would like to experience Croatia as it should be experienced.

Think outside the box. Your trip can be anything you choose it to be. We can customize any kind of itinerary, so feel free to choose any combination of activities or places or add something from your bucket list and contact us to create your perfect trip.

about life and ventures project

Story of Life and Ventures began some time ago, it just didn’t have this particular name. It’s the project born out of love for exploration and travel deep into the heart of nature. Year after year we were discovering new things and falling in love with new adventure activities. You could say everything started with hiking. The time was passing by and the peaks we hiked became higher so we went to an alpine school. The era of rock climbing started and just like that we were climbing the high cliffs of Croatia. After the dry rock, it was time for some water activities. And a love toward kayaking was born. Before we could turn our heads we were training to become adventure guides in one of the largest Croatian adventure travel agencies. Spent two months kayaking some of the wildest Croatian rivers, and then three more months guiding adventure tours in some of the most beautiful landscapes of Croatia…

…and in that year project Life and Ventures was born. Guided adventure tours during the tourist season and adventure travel blog during the whole year.

We returned to Dalmatia after spending 10 years in Zagreb with an idea to start a small adventure travel company. We got all the necessary certificates, spent all of our savings on buying equipment and it was time to start. The idea behind the part of guided adventure tours in Croatia lies in the fact that we wanted to lead tourists to places otherwise hidden and introduce them to some more adventurous activities Croatia has to offer, meeting new people and making some new friends in the process.

And here we are, still living the same dream, making it better with every passing day…

Meet the guides

Hello there! We are Andrea & Mario, founders and adventure guides of Life and Ventures. We’re just two ordinary persons with extraordinary love toward being outdoor, discovering and exploring a world that surrounds us, often in a more adventurous manner. We are the ones that will guide you through your adventure travel in Croatia whether you choose to join us. We were born and raised in southern Dalmatia, it’s our home and playground and we’ll gladly share some of the places for the best adventure with you. We tend to have a more personal approach in our tours during which you are not merely our guest but also a companion with whom we share a common adventure.

We rarely rest. Even when the season of guided adventures is done we still keep exploring and preparing new tours for the years to come. You can find more about that in our Blog section where our adventures take virtual form. When we take a break from the world of adventure we are devoted to our photography/videography and design business. Constant development in the adventure tourism domain is something we strive for through new courses we participate in.

adventure-guide-2

Pretty side of L&VE. She started her adventure life with scuba diving and continued with other activities. She loves to travel and she can’t wait to go on a next journey in some foreign country. She like to spend her free time playing with our two adopted kittens – Šćućur and Čičak.

adventure-guide

Restless side of L&VE. Addicted to spending time in nature, discovering and exploring new places and new ways of moving. Rarely goes anywhere without photography equipment. Love landscape photography, especially ambient and atmospheric, fog, sunrises, sunsets, expanses… Always thinking about the ways to improve tours and design new ones.

A word from our guests

Youtube channel full of adventures.

And cool places. In the year 2020, in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, we started to explore our surroundings even more. We did a few videos here and there but they were not in a form they will be from now on. The idea behind our Youtube channel is to explore peculiar outdoor places of Croatia and the rest of the world and make research about them. We strive to make a short documentary about these places with all the interesting info we could find about them.

If you are into the outdoor kind of stuff or just want to find more about the fantastic outdoor wonders that surround us, subscribe to our channel and join us in the ride. You can explore our channel directly on Youtube or under Videography on this site.

Our latest ventures

Tourist season doesn’t last a whole year but the urge to discover, explore and travel does. This is where all of our adventures live virtually in the form of story and photography. If you are an adventurer seeking places to visit in Croatia , you’ll find some here. After the guided adventure tours season ends we travel to some other places, spend some time designing new adventures and improving the old ones. It’s the process that never ends.

In this section, you can read about all these adventurous travels that we do during the year. They often happen in our surroundings while we explore some unknown places of our home. In others, we explore some of the most famous outdoor places in Croatia . Sometimes the adventure takes us to other countries so we write about that as well. We are active on social networks as well so make sure you check our Facebook, Instagram and YouTube profiles.

If you are a couple traveling in Croatia, visit our Love and Ventures website where you can find the best things to do in Croatia for couples.

Please respect nature and be aware of your limits while exploring the world that surrounds you. Some of the places from our blog are accessible only by using the proper equipment. In our adventures, we use kayaks, mountain bikes, and rock climbing and hiking equipment.

Travel Croatia: Yours to rediscover

Not so long ago, the mention of Croatia would have drawn blank stares. Today, travel magazines are tripping over themselves to proclaim Croatia the next [insert superlative here]. Fact is, the country's status as an Adriatic playground was on recess during the Balkan civil war. The azure waters and countless coves of the Dalmatian Coast remain a yachtsman's dream, while medieval Zagreb and UNESCO-protected Dubrovnik ooze romance as much as ever. Best of all, Croatia has finally shrugged off the shroud of war, restoration is well underway (if not already complete), and travellers are quickly returning.

I’ve had the best two weeks on the Eastern European/Balkans tour with David. From initially booking with the company, I had a great help from Richard. He answered all my questions and eased my nerves as it was my first time backpacking as well as staying in hostels. They have honestly been brilliant and I haven’t been nervous at all. I felt very welcomed into the group when I started my tour and have loved the freedom to explore different countries. David has been great with organising activities and making sure the group is happy as well as giving advice on places to visit in your free time. He’s also great at picking out bars! The places that I’ve been have been amazing. After this trip, I’m sure to book another one soon as I’ve had the best time ever!

12 Awe-Inspiring Adventures in Croatia

Ready for the best adventures in Croatia? From abseiling down Dubrovnik city walls to diving the Kornati Islands, check out these adventures!

adventures in croatia

Croatia might conjure up images of island hopping, beach bumming and nowadays walking around Dubrovnik pretending you’re an extra in Game of Thrones. But I’ve found its the lesser known adventures in Croatia that often make my highlights of the country over the last few years.

With that sprawling coastline along the sparkling Adriatic Sea, you won’t be shocked to hear that the watersports are world-class. Windsurfing, white-water rafting, scuba diving, , kiteboarding, kayaking – I’ve done all this and more on the water in Croatia .

The dramatic landscapes of canyons, cliffs, hills, mountains and forests also provide phenomenal settings for adventurous activities. And you don’t have to travel far from the history and culture-rich towns and cities to enjoy them.

adventures-in-croatia

Activities and tours in Croatia range from action-packed white-water rafting on the Cetina River to a scenic jeep safari in Hvar. There are unusual things to do like abseiling down Dubrovnik Old City walls too – how many people can say they’ve done that!

So, if you’re planning a holiday in Croatia, I definitely think you should find time for some adventures. Allow my 12 suggestions of adventurous things to do in Croatia to inspire the thrill seeker in you!

Planning a trip to Croatia? Then make sure you read my guides on the best day trips from Dubrovnik , the best day trips from Split , and where to stay in Dubrovnik too. And as a little more inspiration, here are some of my favourite photos of Croatia to really get you excited for your holiday.

Adventure Activities in Croatia

Sea kayaking in dubrovnik.

adventurous things to do in croatia

The Adriatic Sea is generally calm and wave-free, which makes for perfect sea kayaking conditions. Head down to the beach on any day and chances are you’ll spot a selection of brightly coloured kayaks out on the water.

The great conditions here mean that you can be a complete novice and still have a go at sea kayaking, by yourself or with a group tour. I chose to go on a tour mainly because it’s always a fun group activity and the instructors lead you to the very best spots along the rugged coastline.

Anyway, kayaking under the walls of Dubrovnik is one of the best things you can do in the city and it offers such a different perspective. I’d definitely recommend this activity for anyone looking for a bit of an adventure!

A 3-hour sea kayaking tour of Dubrovnik costs £26/$32 and gives you the chance to exploring the coast and walls of the city. This tour includes all equipment, a knowledgable guide, insurance and even a little snack.

Alternatively, there are some incredible day trips from Dubrovnik if you’re looking for a few other tours in Croatia further afield!

Sail Croatia

adventure in croatia

You might know Sail Croatia as a party tour operator. Well, they are a safe bet if you want to meet new people, socialise and party away the evenings.

But what you might not know is that they also offer active cruises based around cycling and hiking. So, you can enjoy the social side of Sail Croatia but also make sure you pack in as much adventure as possible.

One of their most popular trips is their hiking cruises where you get to take on some of the best hiking trails in the country. Plus, sailing between destinations ensures you get to see a decent chunk of the country in even a short 7-day cruise.

Scuba diving the Kornati Islands National Park

croatia adventure activities

Are you looking for a few amazing adventures in Croatia? Then look no further than the Kornati Islands National Park!

The Kornati Islands National Park is spread over an archipelago between the cities of Zadar and Šibenik. There are 109 islands, with some awesome dive spots and an abundance of marine wildlife.

Murter Island is usually the starting point for most dives. Around here you can see all kinds of impressive scenery as well as octopuses, sea sponges, crustaceans and lots of colourful fish.

One of the coolest parts is getting to explore the underwater wrecks, and there are a fair few in the area too. Francesca Wreck is completely covered in soft coral and a truly incredible sight. This is without a doubt one of the best dives in Croatia!

White-water rafting on the Cetina River

rafting-in-croatia

I love the adrenaline rush you get with white-water rafting and the Cetina River is up there with my top places to do it. You can spend a good three hours in the raft here, on a route that’s exciting without being too intimidating.

The river flows through a spectacular canyon, which had some of my favourite scenery in Croatia. Forest, caves, waterfalls, rock formations – it’s all on view as you bump your way along the rapids. We also stopped at a few calmer spots for a quick swim.

White-water rafting on the Cetina River was one of the tours in Croatia I did as a day trip from Split. There are loads of tour operators who arrange trips from the city including transfers, which are less than an hour each way. It’s also a fantastic way of meeting some like-minded travellers too!

A 4-hour white-water rafting tour costs £25/$32 and takes you on an amazing route of grade 2/3 rapids. This tour includes all equipment hire, professional guides and transfers too.

Rock climbing at Omis

croatia adventures

While you’re in the area and sniffing out adventurous things to do in Croatia, spend some time in Omis. This town is where the Cetina River meets the sea and it’s great for rock climbing.

Being such a hotspot for the sport, there are plenty of instructors and routes on offer. So you’ll be comfortable climbing whether you’re a seasoned pro or complete beginner. And I promise you there are a lot of beginners here.

It’s an epic view as you climb up to the top. You can look out over the city, towards the sea or at the Cetina River canyon. Being so close to the sea also has the bonus of being able to cool off with a dip after a hard climb.

Abseiling down the Dubrovnik city walls

abseiling-in-dubrovnik

Why just admire the ancient Old City walls in Dubrovnik when you can abseil down them? This is one of the more unexpected adventure activities in Croatia but one of my favourites.

The abseil only takes about 30 minutes – a bit longer when you add in time for safety briefing and preparation. This makes it one of the best adventurous things to do in Croatia if you’re short on time. Unlike other activities, there’s no day tripping out of the city required.

You scale the walls down to the city’s main street, Stradun – it’s quite a way to make an entrance! One thing – it’s like lots of tourists will take photos of you so watch out for that!

You can find out more about abseiling in Dyubrivnik here .

Hiking in the mountains of Makarska

adventure activities in croatia

Taking the heights up a notch, the mountains of Makarska include Dalmatia’s highest peak – Mount Biokovo. The only national park on the central Dalmatian coastline is also here. As you’d expect, this stunning little corner of the country is a great place for hiking.

Wander on trails through olive groves, forests and vineyards to the limestone paths further up. Some of the walks are pretty strenuous so just make sure you’ve picked a route that suits your pace.

This is actually one of my favourite adventurous activities in Croatia as all you need is a good pair of hiking shoes! Also, the views from the top of the mountains are simply incredible.

Canyoning on the Cetina River

canyoning-croatia

As well as white-water rafting, the Cetina River is a prized place for another of the best adventures in Croatia – canyoning. Carved out over thousands of years, the many pools, lakes, cliffs and even subterranean tunnels are the perfect canyoning setting.

It’s one thing to tumble down the river in a boat, but a whole other thrill to throw yourself in. I’ll be the first to admit there are points along the way that are nerve wracking, but be brave and give it a go. I promise you won’t regret it!

This is another of the tours in Croatia that you can do from Split, so an ideal choice if you’re basing yourself there.

A canyoning tour of the Cetina River costs £37/$45 and it is one of the best Croatia adventure activities. This tour includes all equipment, a professional guide and transfers too. Oh, make sure you bring a change of clothes for afterwards too.

For those of you looking for something a little more extreme, a little something to really push the boundaries, then you’ll want to take a look at this tour .

Jeep safari in Hvar

jeep-safari-hvar

Hvar has a reputation of being all about partying. While it’s true that the nightlife is great, don’t miss the adventurous things to do in Croatia on offer here too.

The island is one of the most picturesque in Croatia, and jumping on a jeep safari is an exciting way to take in the scenery. As well as olive groves, vineyards and hilly landscapes, you get to see Hvar’s famous lavender fields and old, abandoned settlements and villages.

The gravel roads aren’t the smoothest, so maybe don’t plan this activity for the morning after a night at Carpe Diem! It is a fantastic way of learning more about the island though and obviously a lot of fun too.

Windsurfing and kiteboarding in Bol

windsurfing in croatia

Lots of places along the Adriatic coast are good for windsurfing and kiteboarding, but Bol is one of the best. The town is on the island of Brač and is known for the gorgeous beach Zlatni Rat or the ‘Golden Horn’ as it’s also called. It’s easily one of my favourite beaches in Croatia.

Here the conditions for wind and kitesurfing are near perfect, mainly thanks to the wind regularly blowing above 15 knots and the flat water. Stroll along the main road down to the beach and you’ll find countless instructors and rental places. If you’ve never given either sport a go before, this is a great place to dip your toe in the water – literally.

Cycling around Dalmatia

adventure travel in croatia

Anyone into cycling should definitely consider making it one of their main modes of transport in Dalmatia. The roads are generally excellent for bikes and it means throwing a little adventure into your experience while you get from A to B.

You get to admire the stunning scenery and some of the national parks are even bike-friendly, such as Krka. You can also take your bike on ferries between islands, so getting around on two wheels really is a pretty convenient option.

Alternatively, if you don’t fancy all the hill climbs, there are a number of e-bike tours on offer. This is a full-day e-bike tour around Krkr National Park which is pretty spectacular.

Ziplining in Crikvenica

crikvenica

The zipline in Crikvenica is one of the epic Croatia attractions, mainly because it’s the first in Europe to travel over the sea. The wire is 500m in length, at around 100 feet high.

Situated in the Kačjak peninsula, the views you get of the sea and coastline as you rush along the line are beautiful. The whole thing lasts just 30 seconds, so you get some serious speed and a proper adrenaline rush.

It might sound like a bit of a whirlwind adventure but it’s an experience and memory that sticks with you, that’s for sure!

Show Full Itinerary

Dobro Dosli! Welcome to Croatia. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. You can arrive at any time during the day as there are no activities planned until this important meeting. Although it experienced devastation during the war in the early 1990s, Dubrovnik’s old town is the undisputed jewel of the Dalmatian Coast. With its tiled roofs and white stone buildings, the old town remains as charming as ever. Extensive restoration has taken place to return it to its original splendour, and even today repairs are still being undertaken. With the sparkling water of the Adriatic in the background, Dubrovnik is picturesque, full of character and can easily be covered on foot. If you do arrive early, why not head out to one of the Elafiti Islands? There's Lopud, a quiet island with lovely hikes, clean beaches and a ruined castle. Kolocep is a sleepy enclave that boasts walks for every fitness level and Sipan, which is the most populated of the isles and reputedly has the most hospitable inhabitants. Alternatively, you might choose to simply laze about on one of Dubrovnik's beaches and people-watch for hours.

Start the day by beating the crowds with an early morning walk along Dubrovnik's famous 2-kilometre-long city walls surrounding the old town. Enjoy views of the sea from the fully intact medieval structure, then enjoy all that Dubrovnik has to offer with the remainder of the day free for you to explore. Visit Big Onofrio's Fountain, a masterpiece built by famous European architect Onofrio della Cava. This 15th-century landmark was built to supply water to the city, flowing from the spigots into the collection trough surrounding it. Be sure to check out the Franciscan monastery with one of the world's oldest, continuously functioning pharmacies, founded in the 13th century. If you still feel energetic after a day exploring the city you can take the switchbacks leading up Srd Hill behind Dubrovnik for spectacular views of the city and the Dalmatian coastline. Otherwise, the newly restored cable car can whisk you to the top in no time. The hill is topped by a castle of Napoleonic times, which now houses the Museum of the Croatian War of Independence.

Journey to Korcula (approximately 4 hours). You will travel along the narrow and scenic Peljesac Peninsula to its very tip. The last stretch to Korcula will be done by car ferry. For the next two nights, stay with generous hosts – locals who rent out their rooms in the summer season. The rooms, while simple, are the best way to put money back into the local economy. In the evening perhaps head out to a local restaurant. Make sure you try the traditional Dalmatian meat loaf, or pasticada (traditional stewed beef), and some fresh grilled vegetables with olive oil, usually served with fresh goat and sheep cheeses, and maybe some smoked ham to tie it all together. Don't forget to have a bit of travarica (a grappa-like drink made with a herb called verbane) and some Korcula cakes for dessert.

Today, head on a day trip to the stunning Mljet Island. Mljet is Croatia’s greenest island, with a large section of the north western shores part of a national park. The island is well known for its two salt lakes – Veliko Jezero and Malo Jezero (big lake and small lake) – that are located at the north end of the island. With some of the clearest waters in the world, any of the Adriatic islands shimmer in the sunlight, but Mljet is extra special. Start Mljet's exploration with a short hike into the island's interior, followed by a ferry ride to St Mary's Benedictine Monastery, located on an island in one of the lakes. Spend the day discovering its tiny towns dotted around the island, the weaving and winding coastline full of nature walks and scenic lookouts and, of course, the sandy beaches, tranquil inlets and turquoise blue shores calling out to be explored. Mljet is a little further away and less visited than the tourist hotspots of Brac and Hvar, so you’ll be able to stray away from the crowds and have this peaceful paradise to yourself. Head back to Korcula in the afternoon for a relaxing evening, hopefully full of delicious food and some great local wine.

A hydrofoil ferry takes you to the neighbouring island of Hvar (approximately 90 minutes). Beautiful Hvar has an air of Venice about it and is known as the 'Queen of the Dalmatian Islands'. Upon arrival, get to know the town with its wonderfully preserved Renaissance facades on an orientation walk. Later you may want to visit the 16th century Spanjola Fortress, from where spectacular views over town and this part of the Adriatic can be had. Feel the history when wandering the backstreets of quirky galleries and unique boutiques, watch the fishermen bring the day’s catch into the harbour, and chill out over a few cocktails in a waterside bar.

Today is a free day to explore this island at your leisure. Perhaps take a bus to the interior of Hvar Island where you can take a leisurely hike through the abandoned villages of Velo Grablje and Malo Grablje, gently descending all the way down to the sea at Milna Bay. On the way you can witness what remains of the typical Mediterranean life that flourished on the Croatian islands in the 18th and 19th centuries. Hike past dramatic jagged limestone cliffs and slow your pace to enjoy the undulating farms, fields of lavender and rosemary, and ancient olive groves. Cool down in the shimmering waters upon arrival into the little town of Milna where the hike ends. Alternatively there are plenty of other options for exciting activities in town. Maybe take a short boat ride to the nearby Pakleni islands – largely uninhabited and often described as being among the most beautiful in the world. If you’re not feeling super energetic today, spend the day lounging at one of the island's many quiet beaches and enjoy a sunset stroll along the harbour promenade. In the evening head to Hora – a local farm-style restaurant, where you’ll have an included dinner in the surrounds of UNESCO-protected fields and farmland, where little has changed since the Ancient Greeks arrived almost 2400 years ago. Taste award winning wines, olive oils and other Dalmatian delicacies like local cheese and prosciutto accompanied with a traditional peka style meal or grill and finish with a Dalmatian desert.

Catch a boat to Split (approximately 1 hour). Situated on a small peninsula on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, Split is the second largest city in Croatia. Join a local guide for a walking tour of this stunning seaside town and get to know its history. See the original and fantastically preserved basements under the city, as well as the Cathedral in Diocletian's Peristyle and Jupiter's Temple. Explore the impressive ruins of Diocletian's Palace – Split's most imposing structure and some of the most interesting ruins on the Adriatic coast. Portions of the Palace are over 1700 years old and there’s ample time to walk around. Split grew out from Diocletian's Palace and you can almost see it evolving in a multitude of different ways right before your eyes. Some cultures might have made the palace a museum, but Split is a dynamic and vibrant place, and now the palace houses many businesses and homes. If your feet get tired, why not grab a drink at a cafe on the Riva Promenade and people watch for a while? Be sure get your group together for a harbourside dinner – it’s time for more of a relax!

There are no activities planned for the final day and you are able to depart the accommodation at any time. As there is so much to see in Split and the surrounding area, such as Salona, Trogir or Sibenik, you may want to consider extending your time in Split. We are happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).

A Backroads Family Trip.

Backroads, a longtime leader in adventure travel, has made its reputation by catering to changing traveler needs and shifting demographics. In 2024, that means focusing on the increasing number of multigenerational families eager to travel together.

An astonishing 38 percent of their adventure travel trips cater to this market. So it's worth paying attention when they announce a roster of new multigenerational family trips as they just did today.

New for 2025 are multi-adventure trips for families in the Netherlands and Belgium, Scotland and England, Croatia and Slovenia, and along the Camino de Santiago. They’re also unveiling the company’s first North American Snow Adventure for Families with Young Adults in their 20s and Beyond, which they see as a growing demographic in family adventure travel.

“We’re seeing huge demand for our Family Trips with friends wanting to travel with their kids, and also with multigenerational families,” said Tom Hale, Backroads Founder, President and CEO, in an email interview. “The flexibility on our trips means everyone, including grandparents and grandkids, can have an experience tailored to their interests. Backroads is the only active travel company to offer family trips designed for different age groups so that guests travel with other families in the same life stage, nurturing great camaraderie and connections on every trip.”

Backroads refined adventure trips for families in 2018 when they began offering trips for three distinct age groups: Families with Teens & Kids is for ages 9–17, with ages 4+ welcome; Families with Older Teens & 20s for ages 17+, with younger siblings 14+ welcome; and Families with Young Adults 20s & Beyond for ages 20+, with younger siblings 17+ welcome. They also added a dedicated Kids Adventure Leader for the youngest children. A single trip may come with two or three family variations to choose from.
