Best road bike in the world : Specialized Tarmac achieves new TOUR top rating

Julian Schultz

 ·  20.10.2023

The new Specialized Tarmac already showed its potential on the first test ride. The measurements from the TOUR lab and GST wind tunnel confirm the positive riding impression.

So far, four competition models have topped the list of the best racing bikes in the world. The Canyon Aeroad , Giant Propel , Scott Foil and Specialized Tarmac SL7 earned the top rating in TOUR by top performance in the four most important criteria. The 1.4 seemed carved in stone, with the symbiosis of aerodynamics, weight, comfort, and stiffness hardly able to be improved upon. But with a great piece of engineering, Specialized is now setting a new benchmark - and giving an insight into the direction that competition bikes are likely to develop.

Tarmac SL8: Perfect symbiosis

Fast, light, stiff, comfortable: The Tarmac SL8 shows no weaknesses in the TOUR test.

Making one of the already best racing bikes in the world even better: That was the challenge faced by Specialized and their chief engineer, Peter Denk . And they stayed true to their philosophy. The SL8 remains, among competition all-rounders, the bike that shows no weaknesses in its exclusive S-Works version. Already during the first test ride on the sidelines of the World Championships in Glasgow, this bike hinted at its potential . The measurements from TOUR’s lab and GST-Wind Tunnel confirmed this riding experience. The bike impresses above all with the perfect interplay of its characteristics.

With its low weight of 6550 grams, the Tarmac accelerates like a bullet and effortlessly sprints up climbs. The exceptionally rigid frame set and the sporty, stretched riding position emphasize the character of this thoroughbred racer. Unlike our test bike in Glasgow, which was equipped with a 3D-printed saddle, the reviewed version comes with a conventional carbon saddle, which is slightly less comfortable. Overall, the SL8 provides a high level of comfort for a competition bike.

Like all competition bikes in the TOUR test, the new Tarmac had to prove its aerodynamic performance in the GST-Wind Tunnel in Immenstaad.

In the GST-Wind Tunnel in Immenstaad , the Specialized bike finally eliminated all doubts: with 209 watts of pedalling power to overcome drag at 45 km/h, the new model is only minimally faster than the SL7 (210 watts). In addition, there are competitors with better aerodynamics or more comfort. However, as an overall concept, no racing bike currently performs better.

The fastest racing bikes in TOUR

The Tarmac SL8 is exactly ten watts behind the fastest road bike in the TOUR test, the Simplon Pride II (199 watts). However, the aero bike from the Austrian bicycle manufacturer is also more than a kilogram heavier and more tightly tuned, which is why it cannot keep up with the agile handling of the Specialized.

In comparison to similar all-round concepts like the Cannondale SuperSix (207 watts) or Van Rysel RCR (207 watts), the Tarmac is almost on par in terms of aero performance. However, both the bike from its US competitor and the novelty from Decathlon’s own brand are also heavier and less stiff.

Simplon Pride II: 199 watts

Expensive Fun

The price tag of the new record holder dampens the excitement. While the S-Works Tarmac SL8 with electronic Dura-Ace and aero wheels from their own brand Roval is slightly cheaper than its predecessor, 14000 euros is still a lot of money for a racing bike - no matter how good it is. Cheaper versions range between 6800 and 9000 euros, but they don’t match the impressive riding experience of the top model.

  • Lateral fork stiffness: 55 N/mm | 1.0
  • Bottom bracket stiffness: 61 N/mm | 1.0
  • Frame comfort: 156 N/mm | 1.7
  • Aerodynamics: 209 watts | 1.7

The TOUR rating

The TOUR rating is based on what is technically possible and reasonable. For example, we award a rating of 1.0 for weight if the road bike weighs less than 6.3 kilograms. The same applies to criteria such as stiffness and comfort - here, we use what is technically sensible as the benchmark. Making a road bike infinitely stiff is not desirable. While a rating of 1.0 can be achieved in this discipline, the values are capped. The theoretical overall rating for a bike is 1.0; however, since individual criteria such as weight and aerodynamics require conflicting measures in design, the challenge remains high.

With introduction of electronic shifting systems and disc brakes, we have adjusted our rating to account for technological advancements. This also applies to current tires with improved technical properties. Therefore, the new top grade of 1.3 cannot be compared to older bikes that achieved this score with rim brakes and mechanical shifting systems anymore.

Bike Box Alan bike boxes are manufactured in Yorkshire, England by company founder and lifelong cyclist Alan Hamshaw. Hamshaw or 'Bike Box Alan' founded the company back in the early noughties after becoming frustrated with repeatedly repairing the leading bike box brand of the day's wares. Spotting a gap in the market he decided he could, and would, do better.

Fast forward to the present day and the Bike Box Alan range has five different hard-case bike boxes including a hard wheel case and a racing wheelchair bike box, as well as a range of accessories and spare parts available. Bike boxes are available to rent or buy and are used by amateurs and professional riders alike to keep their bikes safe whilst travelling abroad, specifically when flying.

I used and tested the largest Bike Box Alan case in the range on a recent riding trip to Mallorca, the Triathlon Aero Easyfit bike box. The Aero Easyfit is the newest offering from the brand and the brand claims it is 'the biggest bike box available anywhere'. Our measurements actually put it a couple of centimetres smaller than the Evoc Road Bike Bag Pro, but it is still a healthy-sized, hard-shell bike box. We also featured the Bike Box Alan Premium bike box model in our best bike travel cases buyers guide.

As you may gather from the name, the Triathlon Aero Easyfit is designed to allow time trial or triathlon bike base bars to fit in the box without the need to disassemble the front end of the bike. It also means your regular road or pretty much any other bike you want to travel with will fit comfortably without the need to disassemble any of the front end, which is a big plus point, especially with so many fully integrated bike cockpits and internal routing these days that can make disassembly a headache.

The Aero Easyfit is available to buy outright from £680, and there are a few options and extras that should you want them will increase the price by a few pounds. There is also an inbuilt GPRS tracking device version should you want even more security, which starts at £799. You can also hire the bike box for seven days starting from £43 from the Bike Box Alan website. This puts the Bike Box Alan at the upper end of the hard shell bike box pricing spectrum if you're looking at an outright purchase.

Price : From £680 / $843 / €767 / AU$1270 (Hire also available)

Capacity : Fits most bikes with wheelbases up to 120 cm / Compatible with 29” bikes. Riders over 190cm may need to lower the seatpost / remove r.mech etc.

Compatibility : Front: Compatible with QR skewer or 12 mm x 100 mm thru axle (Road bike disc) Max 48cm bar width

Rear : Compatible with 130 / 135 mm QR skewer or 12mm thru-axles

Dimensions :  L 133cm x H 94cm x W50cm

Material : Plastic composite / Metal construction

Weight : 13kg / 28. lb (including 2 x foam padding layers)

Design and aesthetics

The Aero Easyfit shares a lot of features with the other boxes in the Bike Box Alan range so if you are familiar with other models already, you won't be dealing with anything new for the most part. For those that aren't as well-versed, I will outline the overall design.

The standout design feature of the Aero fit is the larger size and wider end which allows handlebars to stay on the bike, meaning no disassembly is required. Something which does stress out cyclists, creates an extra job, and eats into holiday time. Externally, the wide end of the Easy Fit measures just over 50 centimetres. The bike box length is 133cm long and 94cm high. ITs empty weight is around 13.5kg. Most airlines have a maximum bike box weight of around 30kg and mine packed with the bike (under 7kg), plus tools, kit and some clothing came in well under this mark.

The Aero Easy fit is constructed from hard plastic, which Bike Box Alan says is a secret composite, in a choice of six colours. The box is split into two halves which meet along the centre. The box's two halves are kept together by two fabric straps internally and along the bottom, there is a metal hinge which is pop riveted into place. The halves overlap each other and close using six sturdy metal clasps, mine came with a small padlock to use on one of the top clasps. The angular and rectangular shape of the box means that when it's closed and locked together it naturally forms quite a strong and sturdy shape.

There are four decent-sized castor wheels on each underside corner of the bike box. The rear two are fixed and the front two move 360 degrees to aid mobility and steering when you are navigating airline bag drop queues. The wheels themselves are rubber coated, and a moulded handle on top means pulling or steering is easily done (you can do it one-handed). The box also came with an additional clip-on carry / pull handle.

Bike box Alan Triathlon aero easyfit bike box

Every cyclist travelling with a bike on an aeroplane dreads their pride and joy being damaged in transit or by uncaring baggage handlebars as boxes are being loaded. Bike Box Alan looks to minimise this risk with what they call the anti-crush pole. Two cylindrical sections of rubber-coated steel pole in either half of the box meet when it is folded together preventing crushing and bike damage. These poles can be moved between two positions to achieve the correct fit around the wheels and bike. There is actually some information from a baggage handler on the BBA website explaining how bike boxes are stacked in a plane's hold and how the pole works to protect a bike.

Along with the choice of six colours, you can choose to have component stickers and decorative stripes such as the world champions' rainbow bands on your bike box. For example, mine featured Dura-Ace and Cannondale stickers on the outside. For an extra £15 / $18 you can have your name and country flag on the box for that personalised pro feel.

Comprehensive spares for every bike box are available on the BBA website including replacement castors and even a drill bit and pop rivet gun to replace any pop rivets that fail over the years which is impressive. The BBA seven-year guarantee covers parts and manufacturing (two years for approved commercial hire use) the only exceptions being the rubber wheels which are a wear-and-tear item. And any damage caused by negligence from airlines.

Packing a bike

The Bike Box Alan website provides packing instructions and an instructional video on its website. The video even features Ineos Grenadiers professional rider, Ben Swift . There are also some helpful stickers with packing information inside the bike box.

The rear wheel of the bike sits cassette side down in the bottom half of the bike box and the moulding of the box accommodates the wider rear wheel axle, the wheel is then strapped into place using inbuilt velcro straps. BBA recommends letting some pressure out of your tyres before packing.

A layer of thick foam then sits on top of the wheel and you are ready to pack the frame, the pedals need to come off the crank arms which are set to be horizontal with the edge of the bike box, the chain should be in the large chainring and smallest sprocket ratio, and that's it. The frame is then velcro strapped drive-side down into place around the forks, rear chain and seatstays, chainset and handlebars and stem.

Once the frame is in place and secured, a second layer of foam sits on top to protect the bike's frame and components. The front wheel then straps into the upper half of the box in the same way as the rear wheel using the velcro straps.

The two halves can then be closed, the bike box clasps closed, and a padlock added if the user prefers.

Performance

Packing a bike down into a bike box for a flight does create some nervousness. I'm sure there are riders travelling week in and week out with a box who have zero fear and have it down to an art form, but I suspect for most of us, it makes us a little nervy. Strapping your pride and joy into a plastic box to be potentially thrown into the hold of a plane is not going to sit well with most of us.

I watched the BBA pack video and worked to the instructions on the website and packed my Cannondale Supersix Evo down into the bike box without trouble. I was definitely slower on the first pack due to wanting to get everything right and ensure my bike was as safe as possible, but the process was simple and it was obvious the procedure was one that would become fast and second nature with familiarity and practice.

I removed my pedals (to go in hand luggage) attached my quick releases in the dropouts of the frame for extra support and removed my chain (a personal decision) and that was it. The wheels strap in easily to their dedicated spots and the velcro straps are the strongest and grippiest I have ever encountered on anything, holding the wheels really securely. The same is true for the frame, once you've snugged all of the velcro frame straps down there is zero movement from the frame and it's really locked into place inside the box. The wider section of the bike box meant I didn't need to take my bars off and the velcro straps secured my handlebars easily.

I'm pretty fussy about my bike, I avoid it being bottom of the pile at the local cafe stop for fear of it getting scratched and am generally pretty fastidious over it, but I felt comfortable with it in the Aero Easyfit pretty much straight away. You can just tell from the design and strapping that the bike's going to be well-protected in there. A bike moving around inside a box is at risk of damage before you add external damage or sloppy handling into the mix. I was happy leaving my rear mech and hanger in situ on the bike - the moulding of the box suits the rear mech well and offers support, I just added some extra soft foam padding of my own to give the rear mech a little extra cushioning for peace of mind. I was also able to pack in plenty of tools, nutrition products, a helmet and additional cycling kit inside the box comfortably, whilst staying within the 30kg weight limit.

Bike box Alan Triathlon aero easyfit bike box

My bike emerged unscathed from the box in Mallorca in perfect condition. My riding group of six friends provided something of a group test for the Aero Easyfit. Riders in the group were using soft bike bags, the BBA premium box (a smaller model) and a couple of other alternative hard case boxes.

The Aero Easyfit was clearly the largest box there, but it didn't cause me any issues. It went through airport security machines fine and it was easy to move around the airport. An added bonus of the bike box's extra width was that I could place my cabin bag on top and walk with it, other narrower boxes prevented this and it saved me some effort.

The only issue I saw was the baggage handlers doing a bit of extra manoeuvring with my bike when loading it onto the plane compared to the others. It also took up a little extra room on our minibus shuttle with the driver identifying it as the box for the bottom of the pile due to its shape but again this was no real problem.

Upon reaching our apartment, the final walk up a gravelly climb of a few hundred metres also provided a good test for the Aero Easyfit, and it tackled it easily, the rubber castor wheels worked well and it never really struggled or felt uncontrollable.

Assembling my bike was incredibly easy and whilst my companions reassembled headsets and adjusted handlebars I was already done. The return leg of the journey went the same way and my bike emerged undamaged at the other end, the Aero Easyfit had done its job.

If you feel nervous about disassembling your bike or really don't want the hassle before a trip, there are a few bike boxes available. The Scicon Aerocomfort TSA 3.0 is the lightest, but also the least protective with its complete soft case. The Evoc Road Bike Bag Pro is another, which pairs hard and soft in a two-part system. If you don't mind the added weight and required storage space and want maximum protection, the hard case Bike Box Alan Aero Easyfit is undoubtedly the bike box for you.

Bike box Alan Triathlon aero easyfit bike box

Verdict

I was impressed with the Triathlon Aero Easyfit. I felt comfortable using it and confident that my bike was as safe as possible for my journey.

It was easy to pack my bike into and this would be the case for the majority of users. Integrated handlebars and stem and steerer-routed cabling are the norm now on performance road bikes. It obviously depends on each rider's setup but short or optimised cabling or hydraulic brake hoses might make removing the handlebars almost impossible. The Aero Easyfit resolves this potential issue and the potential issues caused by wider gravel handlebars or Time Trial bars without any real drawbacks. It just makes life easier and saves you time.

I had a slight worry the larger bike box would receive some sort of extra charge or fall foul of some sort of airport baggage size rule but this wasn't the case and it only really gave me an easier life. I wouldn't hesitate to use it again.

If I was really splitting hairs I'd perhaps point out that the velcro strappings need to be tight against the frame could cause some light scratching or hazy marks to paint. If you are worried about this, just protect your frame with tape or similar before strapping it down.

The retail price is at the higher end of the scale but it represents a quality investment with great support, warranty and spares availability that will give you peace of mind when travelling with your potentially very expensive bike. The ability to rent a box also presents a great alternate option that could well work out cheaper depending on your requirements.

Babolat Pure Aero 2023 Review

aero easy tour 2023

The Pure Aero is one of the most-asked-for racquet reviews. So many players use this racquet. Here is my Babolat Pure Aero 2023 review.

The Babolat Pure Aero 2023 is the 7th generation of one of the most popular racquets in the market. The idea behind this model is to give you plenty of power and spin. It’s a racquet that works from intermediate to advanced players, but a small caution is that it can be a bit stiff for players with arm concerns. So avoid using a high tension (53 lbs or higher) and a stiff string (polyester) if you can.

What’s new?

aero easy tour 2023

What’s new with this generation? I would say it’s a little bit of a throwback to the Aero Pro Drive. For most players, the denser string pattern will be a big improvement. You get better control and less string movement with the Babolat Pure Aero 2023 than the predecessor. However, the denser string bed makes it stiffer, so I had some arm concerns with RPM Blast strung at 53 lbs. It played better with better comfort when I changed it to Grapplesnake M8 1.30 at 47 lbs, for example. So consider your string choice and tension wisely if you’re worried about stiffness.

Technologies

Denser pattern – one skipped main string @8, similar to the Aero Pro Drives.

NF2 Tech flax technology – supposed to improve feel and vibration dampening. So-called flax inserts are wrapped at “strategic locations in the frame, create optimal shock absorption and fine-tuned sound quality for an exceptional playing experience,” according to Babolat.

The predecessor felt a bit more comfortable, probably due to added movement in the string bed. But I prefer playing with the 2023 version, thanks to improved control.

Specifications

Not much is changed in terms of specs compared to the previous generations.

Head size: 100 sq inches / 645 cm2 Weight: 300 g / 10.6 oz (strung 315-20g) Balance: 32 cm / pts HL (strung 33 cm / 4 pts HL String pattern: 16/19 Swing weight: 280-85 unstrung, 310-15 strung, Stiffness:  65-66 RA strung (TW average)

How does it play?

aero easy tour 2023

Thanks to the denser string bed, this racquet offers better control and a more consistent response than the predecessor. We’re back to the more reliable string bed of the Aero Pro Drives (from the 2016 Pure Aero, the pattern became more open). Most Aero players will like this change and I think it’s a positive one.

I did however feel an increase in stiffness compared to the 2019, partly due to the denser string bed, but there has also been a slight increase in stiffness of the frame. With RPM Blast 1.25 strung at 53 lbs, my arm complained a bit (which rarely happens these days), but with a softer poly and a dropped tension to 47 lbs, the racquet felt okay to the arm. Your choice of string and tension remains essential to how the racquet feels and performs.

The feel on drop shots and touch was excellent. The extra control is noticeable and allows you to take bigger cuts at the ball confidently. I also liked the nice power on serves.

Overall, the Babolat Pure Aero 2023 plays very similarly to the Aero Pro Drives of 2010-2013. Simply a must demo for players looking to get back to that direct, controlled, and spin-friendly feel.

Who is it for?

Intermediate to advanced players looking for spin and power. Players with arm issues should probably look elsewhere.

aero easy tour 2023

The new Babolat Pure Aero 2023 pushes the iconic Aero line in the right direction. It’s a trip back to the models of 2010-2013 (APD GT), which so many players loved. If you’re looking for power and spin, this is a must demo, but players with arm issues should look elsewhere. And since the racquets are relatively stiff, consider that in your choice of string and tension. The denser string pattern allows for more control, while the racquet retains good spin potential and power when needed.

The new Babolat Pure Aero 2023 racquets will be released on August 25th. Check them out at Tennis Warehouse , Tennis Warehouse Europe , and Tennis Only .

Haven’t heard about that one, maybe contact Babolat?

Do you know or believe that there will be an extended version?

Sadly, I don’t know

will we compare it with the pure aero VS ? as this one has 16×20 that gives also more control…

Will the be a “Tour” version of the 2023 Pure Aero?

Not that interesting review. Very standard cut and paste style. Babolat pure aero 2023 racquet balance is 7pt HL printed on the racquet itself but this review states Balance: 32 cm / pts HL (strung 33 cm / 4 pts HL.

Not that interesting comment. Very standard cut and paste style. 7 hl is unstrung, 4 pts hl is strung.

I’m playing with aero pro drive gt 2010 model, you mention that it’s very similar. I think I would prefer a bit more manuverable version, mine is 335gr strung (maybe quality was a bit off). Pure aero 2019 is 315gr strung so there is difference. Should I consider the new version or check the 2019, I’m concerned about your comments of less control. Thank you

I think the new version has better control and is softer on the arm.

I have way too many rackets, but I played with my mates pure aero 2023 with solinco tour bite soft at around 50lbs. I usually string most of my rackets around 58lbs with luxilon savage and are classic type frames (eg prince phantom 100×18*20,Dunlop cx200+, head gravity pro etc) . I could not believe how easy this was to play with and it had decent control, whether I went for flat shots or Nadal style forehands. Now im considering this or the VS. interested to know the difference in your opinion.

Thanks for this review TN. It has some very useful info. But, I’m a bit confused as to how the 2023 compare to the 2019 terms of stiffness. Can you please clarify? Thank you.

Im reading here that thte 2019 is stiffer which would makes sense since it has a higher stiffness rating (67 > 65): “I think the new version has better control and is softer on the arm”

But I’m confused by this other statement: “You get better control and less string movement with the Babolat Pure Aero 2023 than the predecessor. However, the denser string bed makes it stiffer”.

This sounds like the new version feels stiffer than the predecessor. Are you comparing 2019 vs 2023 here, or does predecessor refer to a version other than the 2019 one?

Hey Larry, thanks. I think it was a bit sloppily written, so I will adjust it. The new version is softer on the arm for sure, even if the denser string pattern makes the string bed feel stiffer. Not sure if that makes sense, but players usually respond to dense string beds because the less give they have makes them feel firmer. Both racquets are good, go 2019 for more power, and go 2023 for more control.

Hi! I recently played with a areo prodrive GT (whatever the 2013 model was, black with the red in the middle) and I loved it! I tried the 2016 and 2019 pure aeros but they did not suit me at all. So now I’m looking for the 2013 frame, would you say the 2023 is close to that one? As I understand it’s basically a throwback to that model?

I’ve played with the 2013 GT French open for the past 3 years and I absolutely love it. I think that’s the model you are talking about. I’m looking to get a 2023 to preserve the 2013 as sometimes it’s hard to find. But it is very likely you can get lucky on eBay. I’ll come back to this if I grab the 2023

Babolat adds another chapter to one of the game's most iconic racquets

With its "best of class" combination of speed, spin and power, the Pure Aero is one of the most popular and versatile racquets ever made. At 11.2 ounces strung and boasting a zippy sub-325 swingweight, this stick delivers easy acceleration from the baseline and quick handling at net. It also possesses the kind of spin-friendly precision and raw power that is dangerous in the hands of aggressive players.  For 2022, in addition to a more arm-friendly flex point, Babolat adds comfort with NF² Technology , which uses flax inserts in the handle and upper hoop to soften ball impact. Babolat also updates its FSI Spin technology with slightly tighter string spacing. The result is greater control (and confidence) when maximizing stroke speed in the service of power and spin. Intermediate and advanced players looking for a speedy spin-monster with surgical targeting will love this update.

Swingweight updated from 318 to 322 based on an additional 10 samples measured

2023 EAA Ford Tri-Motor Tour Stop Dates Announced

Built ford tough.

The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), in 2023, will continue its annual tradition of touring a vintage Ford Tri-Motor aircraft across the United States for purpose of providing contemporary Americans glimpses of the bawdy, jazzy, roaring ‘20s; the 1920s, not the 2020s—the latter of which have, on occasion roared, albeit in alternating registers of chaos, abject terror, and outrage.

aero easy tour 2023

As part of an agreement with Port Clinton, Ohio’s Liberty Aviation Museum, the EAA will operate the museum’s 1928 Ford Tri-Motor 5-AT-B on a national tour with stops currently scheduled in nine U.S. states.

The grand old airplane’s first stop will be a 06 through 09 April dalliance in lovely Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. Additional stops include Evansville, Indiana, from 13-16 April, and Columbia, South Carolina, from 11-14 May.

The Tri-Motor will return to its Port Clinton digs for two stops on 30 June through 02 July, and 01 through 03 September. Throughout the entirety of EAA’s AirVenture—24 through 30 July—the Tri-Motor will nest in Oshkosh, where event attendees will be afforded opportunity to enjoy once-in-a-lifetime rides aboard the historic machine. Additional stops will be added to the Tri-Motor’s tour schedule as they are finalized.

Tickets to go aloft in the historic Tri-Motor are a very reasonable $65 for children 17-and-under, $85 for adult EAA members, and $95 for adult nonmembers. Every seat in the aircraft is a window seat offering superb views of the vistas beneath. Each flight will span approximately thirty sublime minutes, of which about half will be in the air—as the business of safety is, as ever, foremost in the minds and operational practices of the EAA and its members.

Based in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and comprising some 270,000 members and nine-hundred local chapters, the Experimental Aircraft Association embodies The Spirit of Aviation through the camaraderie of building, restoring, and flying recreational and vintage aircraft.

Babolat Pure Aero 2023: User-Friendly Update for 2024

This review gives a solid overview of the Pure Aero 2023, but we all know there’s more to the story than meets the eye (or baseline, for that matter).

So, let’s grab our virtual racquets and get down to business – is this the perfect weapon for your game?

Comfort and Control: No Longer Mutually Exclusive

The review mentions Babolat’s focus on comfort and control, which were sometimes sticking points with earlier Pure Aeros. The new dampening tech and denser string pattern aim to change that. This means you can unleash powerful shots with confidence, all while giving your arm a break.

Baseline Beasts or All-Court Aces? You Decide

The review highlights testing across different styles, and that’s what truly matters! Can the Pure Aero 2023 handle aggressive baseline play from the back of the court and still be a great fit for players who like to mix things up and cover more ground? Performing well in both scenarios makes it a truly versatile option.

Modern Player’s Dream Machine? Buckle Up!

The review suggests the Pure Aero 2023 caters to the “modern tennis game.” Think a blend of power, spin, and control, with a touch of forgiveness for those slightly off-center hits. It’s ideal for players who want an all-around weapon that delivers on all fronts without sacrificing feel.

Strong Players Take Note: Customization Awaits

The article mentions the Pure Aero being a “blank canvas” for strong players. This refers to the ability to customize it with different string types and tensions. For example, a softer string at a lower tension can make the racket even more comfortable.

Not Feeling the Vibe? Here’s Who Might Want to Look Elsewhere

The review suggests that traditionalists might not be the biggest fans of the Pure Aero 2023. This could be because they prefer a more classic feel or crave even more control-oriented rackets.

Final Takeaway: String Selection Matters

The final point on string choice is key! Choosing the right string for your needs can make a big difference. Opting for a softer polyester string at a lower tension can address the racket’s natural stiffness and make it even more comfortable.

Read on, as we take you through the nitty-gritty details. So you can make an informed decision.

Quick Notes on the Babolat Pure Aero 2023

How do you improve upon one of the most popular and versatile rackets out there? That was Babolat’s challenge and our mission was to assess if the French manufacturers met the brief.

On paper the tweaks were fascinating – the implementation of a new dampening technology and the decision to use a denser string pattern promised to address two weaknesses that have previously plagued the Pure Aero line.

Namely a slight reputation for lacking comfort, and limited control (but hey, you’ve got incredible spin and power, so you’re never going to get quite the same level of control.)

We took the 2023 model to our nearest practice court in double-quick time, determined to not just have a hit, but to experiment with different playing styles to test the all-round capabilities of this frame. Could it suit baseline bombers and all-court players alike? Our test would find out.

We adopted a wide variety of playing styles to assess if the new Pure Aero could handle:

Groundstrokes

Read on to see what we thought of Babolat’s latest weapon, and if you are considering a racket change of your own, please try our hugely popular custom racket fitting service – who knows, the new Babolat Pure Aero could be the key to improving your game!

(Check out our complete guide to previous Babolat Pure Aero frames here ).

9 out of 10

Previous versions of the Babolat Pure Aero have been famous for supplying huge amounts of spin and while this iteration retains the spin-centric 16×19 string-bed, Babolat reduced the string spacing to create a denser pattern.

This encourages enhanced control and improved feel (if you’re after a control-oriented racket, then check out our guide to the best control rackets ).

In our hitting sessions, we could feel that this was a true Babolat Pure Aero in our first full cuts with this latest version.

The familiar hallmarks of power and spin were immediately on tap. But we were pleasantly surprised by the amount of control a small tweak to the string bed created.

Our hardest swings were reassuringly dependable in terms of direction and length, a quality lacked by frames focused on providing power.

And speaking of feel, Babolat has also introduced a proprietary dampening technology to this frame. ‘NF2-TECH’ helps counteract vibration and mitigates some of the stiffness that is synonymous with the Pure Aero family of rackets.

This does not mean the 2023 Pure Aero is plush though. The unstrung stiffness rating (RA) of 69 is a red flag to anyone with sensitive arms but after a little experimentation, we found that RPM Blast worked nicely when the tension was dialed down to 48lbs.

Positively, stiffness translates into power and our groundstrokes left the 100sq inch frame with fierce velocity. At the same time, the aforementioned denser string pattern retained enough control to make this the most versatile of weapons – in short, you can hit out with confidence!

Many rackets focus on one specific selling point, but we found the blend of raw power and control allows the player to dictate what sort of game they wish to play.

Whether you elect for a ‘high octane’ brand of tennis or decide upon a more strategic approach, the Pure Aero adapts with ease. We purposefully mixed up our session and used a variety of styles to try and expose a weakness in the new Pure Aero but this stick handled grunt and grace without fuss.

7 out of 10

100sq inch frames are not necessarily ideal for volleying. Many players favor smaller, more maneuverable frames for net play. However, while the Babolat Pure Aero 2023 may not suit ‘serve and volley’ purists, it is no slouch around the net. And besides, this is not a racket made for a traditional game style, this is every inch a modern weapon for today’s game.

Around the net, we found that the denser string-bed and NF2-TECH dampening added an extra dimension to things. Control with heightened feel is always a bonus when volleying, and when called upon, we found that the Pure Aero handled business at the net with enough authority to disguise its large footprint.

For a stiff frame that emphasizes power we were pleased to see our volleys leave the racket with some degree of predictability. Okay, some of our attempts to drop the ball dead with soft hands did not quite come off, but we could at least rely upon the Pure Aero to be consistent if not nuanced when volleying.

At 300-grams and with a swing weight of 315g (strung) this racket moves rapidly through the air. Factor in a combination of stiffness with Pure Aero’s spin potential and we have a rocket launcher in our hands.

For first serves, our session was littered with a glut of flat bombs and kickers that fizz (if you’re not getting the kick you want, then we’ve got the perfect guide for you ). And when we needed control upon crucial second serves, Babolat Pure Aero 2023’s identity morphs on a dime.

This racket really has a Jekyll and Hyde feel to it, and serving lets you tap into whichever side you fancy. Plus, if you feel that this frame is too light for maintaining complete control, a little lead tape can make a significant difference.

A small amount placed at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions can be transformative and the Bros will undoubtedly play around with minor modifications to squeeze a little more juice from an already potent weapon.

8.5 out of 10

Against powerful servers we found the 100sq inch head and control-based string pattern loved to redirect pace. This is not a frame that asks the player to supply their own power so it was often enough to allow the racket and ball to ‘collide’ against a crushed serve. We had ample confidence in the Pure Aero’s forgiveness and control to keep us in the point.

Conversely, when faced with slower serves the Pure Aero begs to be unleashed. This frame specializes in spin with power and as we found out, if you are feeling strong this frame feasts upon second serves.

In the stock-form we tested you get a package that is playable for most, but again, a little lead-tape could unlock an extra gear for stronger players who maybe feel that the lightness of the Babolat Pure Aero 2023 inhibits control.

Babolat Pure Aero 23 Overall Score

As you can tell we are big fans of the Pure Aero and before a ball was hit we loved the looks alone. Babolat’s new cosmetics are dynamic without being a distraction and the gloss finish adds a nice touch of class.

On court things get really interesting as Babolat has clearly invested time and effort into improving this version of a modern classic, a difference the Bros could genuinely feel.

Rather than just produce a cookie-cutter frame with new cosmetics, Babolat has successfully tempered some of the harshness associated with previous iterations of the Pure Aero, making it more user-friendly.

To widen the appeal even further, the move to a dense string pattern ups the control and thus the versatility.

This racket may not suit traditionalists, but it will please millions of players who play a modern tennis game. Players who seek a complimentary blend of power, spin, forgiveness, and feel. For stronger players, it is a blank canvas that can easily be customized

Ultimately, Babolat gets things very right with the 2023 Pure Aero, just be careful when choosing your string/tension.

We recommend a poly at a slightly lighter tension to help counter some of the Pure Aero’s natural stiffness. And, if you need help with choosing your next string we have you covered .

It’s a negative side of those tests. They are the benchmark but not free from blind spots (the real pavement RR for example, some brands question the stiffness measurement -even if those brands used the same Efbe machines to test their frames not long ago). On the aero side I haven’t heard any brand saying the upper mannequin body would really change ranking or W differences between frames. The real error is the steady state flow versus more turbulent in real life.

Aerosmith Announce Rescheduled Dates for Peace Out Farewell Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Aerosmith have announced rescheduled dates for their Peace Out farewell tour, which was suspended in September 2023 because Steven Tyler fractured his larynx. This new leg kicks off Sept. 20 in Pittsburgh and wraps up Feb. 26 in Buffalo, New York. They’ll once again be joined by the Black Crowes.

The band announced plans to wrap their career with one final tour in May 2023, but they played a mere three shows before Tyler severely hurt his larynx. “I am heartbroken to not be out there with Aerosmith, my brothers, and the incredible Black Crowes, rocking with the best fans in the world,” he wrote in a message to fans. “I promise we will be back as soon as we can!”

Babolat Pure Aero 2023 Review

The latest version of one of the game's most iconic rackets. how does the babolat pure aero 2023 play.

Martina

Babolat, the renowned French company, has gained recognition for its tennis rackets, which numerous professional players favour.

Among the elite athletes who have chosen Babolat racquets are Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Garbine Muguruza, and Fabio Fognini.

The brand has produced several rackets that have achieved significant success among players of all skill levels, but perhaps their most notable series is the Pure Aero which Rafael Nadal has wielded since the start of his career

In 2023, the Babolat introduced several refreshed Pure Aero models featuring innovative technology to deliver outstanding spin and power.

Fortunately, I had the opportunity to test the latest Babolat Aero Pure 2023, and I’m excited to share my firsthand experience with you in the following review.

Babolat Pure Aero 2023 Cosmetics and Features

babolat pure aero 98 2023

The new features of the Babolat Pure Aero are all based on it’s aerodynamic prowess. For the 2023 version of the Pure Aero, Babolat implemented a list of new technologies that make the racquet extremely attractive.

The integration of the new AEROMODULAR 3 technology aims to enhance aerodynamics with a frame that integrates bumpers and grommets, increasing racket head speed and generating more spin.

Moreover, the FSI Spin feature takes it further by slightly closing the string pattern for more control, but allowing for more significant string movement and optimal ball grip.

The SWX Pure Feel technology complements the design with its extended wrapping of the “SMAC” technology, effectively filtering vibrations to provide a comfortable feel upon impact.

The NF² – Tech adds natural flax fibres into the frame to ensure heightened sensations and optimal vibration reduction.

Before taking it to the court, it is impossible to ignore the notable shift in aesthetics, and the once recognisable banana yellow racket has been significantly transformed.

luxilon element forest green

It now features yellow graphical elements, such as the name at its core, the dual side stripes, and the Babolat logo nestled within the oval.

These elements stand out against a grey, black, and white backdrop, creating a winter camouflage-like design.

This unique visual overhaul brings a fresh perspective to this classic racket, subtly altering its immediate recognisability.

Specification and Setup

babolat pure aero 2023 specs

My Pure Aero came in at 302.1g unstrung, close to the target of 300g, and once strung with Stringlab Hydrogen Devo, it weighed 320.6g.

Babolat Pure Aero 2023 Playtest

babolat pure aero 2023 playtest

First Impressions

On the court, the Pure Aero DNA is immediately recognisable from the first contact with the ball: the available power is undeniably good, but the level of control is equally generous.

The balance between these two aspects provides a sensation of confidently hitting the ball and obtaining good support without the ball flying away. This encourages a decisive approach even with topspin shots.

The feeling is that this aggressiveness and determination to push (rather than merely rely on the opponent’s shot) is a precise demand for those who choose the Pure Aero.

The shot becomes heavy and fairly precise when hitting forcefully and covering the ball. However, when playing defensively, there is a risk of losing some depth in the shots.

Groundstrokes

When hitting groundstrokes, I could immediately sense the true essence of the Babolat Pure Aero when I took my first full swings with this latest version.

The familiar combination of power and spin was readily available. However, it was accompanied by a surprising control favoured by Babolat’s minor adjustment to the racquet’s string bed.

Even my most aggressive shots remained reliably consistent in direction and length, a characteristic often lacking in frames primarily focused on generating power.

Furthermore, as I mentioned in the “Design paragraph”, Babolat introduced their proprietary dampening technology, NF2-TECH, into this racket.

This innovative feature effectively counteracts vibrations and reduces some stiffness typically associated with the Pure Aero family of rackets.

Nonetheless, the 2023 Pure Aero remains a relatively stiff racquet which might raise concerns for those with sensitive and injury-prone arms.

Nevertheless, arm injuries could be prevented by paying extra attention to choosing a comfortable string and stringing tension to suit our needs.

Positively, stiffness translates into power, and my groundstrokes left the frame with fierce velocity.

Mainly on my forehand, I noticed that the power and weight I could transfer on the ball allowed me to maintain/regain control of the rally even from several meters behind the baseline.

Regarding volleying, the Pure Aero 2023 may stumble a bit.

As a lightweight racket with a reduced swing weight compared to its previous generation, it lacks some of the top-notch stability I value in heavier frames.

However, I cannot deny that the substantial beam and 100 square inch head size contribute to its commendable performance at the net, although not flawlessly.

It’s important to note that the Pure Aero consistently feels more manoeuvrable than other rackets in its specific category.

You might assume that the Aerodynamic throat design is merely a marketing trick, but rest assured, it is far from it.

In reality, it enables the racket to glide through the air at an accelerated pace, surpassing all other 300 grams racquets I have encountered.

This assists the racket in swiftly propelling through groundstrokes (as mentioned above) and enhances its manoeuvrability during net play.

In summary, while the stability concern bothered me slightly when countering swift shots, I discovered that the racket’s exceptional manoeuvrability made up for this flaw.

It enabled me to execute powerful shots during volleys and overheads effortlessly while consistently maintaining control and keeping the ball in play during intense rallies.

Regarding serving, the Pure Aero 2023 didn’t deliver an outstanding or disappointing performance.

If I were, to sum up its overall performance on serves, I would say that “it gets the job done” without exceeding expectations.

I could depend on the Pure Aero to execute quick slices consistently, and high kick serves.

Additionally, I noticed good accuracy and power when hitting flat serves.

In essence, the racquet was reliable and versatile during serving. Still, I could have achieved greater speed, height, and power with a different (potentially heavier) frame.

When returning, I quickly noticed that the Pure Aero’s large head and control-oriented string pattern were beneficial when I tried to redirect fast and powerful serves.

In my opinion, this racquet did not demand me to generate my own power while returning; instead, it proved to be a reliable companion, enabling me to effectively oppose and “ricochet” the ball back to the opposite side of the court.

On the other hand, when faced with slower serves, I experienced an enhanced ability to generate substantial speed and power.

This characteristic, combined with the racquet’s manoeuvrability, instilled confidence in me to execute aggressive returns, positioning my feet in front of the baseline. However, I sometimes encountered a slight challenge in consistently achieving desired depth with my shots, which I wished could have been easier to attain.

Who is This Racket For?

pure aero 2023 thoughts

Executing precise serves and employing spin to dominate the rally, pressuring the opponent into errors or providing us with opportune shots to close out the point: this style of play finds perfect synergy with the Pure Aero 2023.

That is not to say that other styles, such as relying on a solid backhand or attacking the net, cannot be employed with this frame. However, alternative choices within the Babolat range are also worth considering for those who possess a natural inclination towards such techniques and gameplay.

Nevertheless, the racquet is suitable for players across all skill levels. While the high manoeuvrability and generous head size might imply that the Babolat Aero Pure caters more towards amateur to intermediate players, its performance has the potential to meet the demands of advanced and professional players as well.

  • Great blend of power, spin and control
  • Very manouverable
  • User friendly and versatile for many playing styles
  • None I can think of

Have you tried the latest version of the Babolat Pure Aero? Let me know in the comments.

Power - 8.5

Control - 8.5, manoeuvrability - 9.5, stability - 7.5, comfort - 7.5, touch/feel - 8, serves - 8.5, groundstrokes - 9, volleys - 7.5, returns - 9.

The Pure Aero 2023 allows a wide range of playing abilities to dominate the court with enhanced spin, power, and control.

Montana's Local Food & Sustainability Expo

October 20, 2023 - october 21, 2023, thank you for joining us at expo.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at AERO’s 49th Annual Expo! This event is now complete, and you can still reference the materials and session descriptions below. Recordings of sessions are available on our YouTube Channel or through the links beside each description below.

MOVING THE NEEDLE : Read the brainstorm compilation notes here.

This “all-hands” session occurred at the end of Saturday’s discussions and workshops.  Here, everyone brought their knowledge and ideas to list the  opportunities, challenges, and collaborators still to engage for making change in these seven areas key to building a more sustainable Montana for all: Renewable Energy & Conservation, Food Access, MT Food System/Policy, Land Use and Community Design, Community Food Systems, Farmland Preservation, and Building Demand for Local Food .

AERO’s 49th Annual Expo, took place in Helena, MT on October 20 & 21st, 2023. Just about 200 friends, new and old, gathered for this community event.

Our very first gathering was in 1974, and led to the establishment of AERO as an organization. It was an opportunity to share information and ideas on issues that mattered to Montanans, with the goal of finding practical solutions that work. Nearly 50 years later, that tradition continues.

This year’s Expo theme was Moving the Needle: Building Whole-Community Engagement with Local Food, Stewardship Agriculture, and Renewable Energy . Below, you can find details about the weekend, including the schedule and agenda, tour and session descriptions, and more. There is also information about our special memorial event celebrating the life and legacy of AERO founder and friend, Wilbur Wood, which took place on the first night of Expo at the Holter Museum of Art. Saturday’s conference sessions were held at Carroll College in the Lower Campus Center.

Stay tuned for our 50th anniversary Expo celebration, coming October 2024 in Billings, where it all began!

-COMMUNITY TOURS-

Five tour options offered Friday of Expo weekend:

10:00-11:30am— Meeting the Needs of the Community: Addressing Hunger in the Greater Helena Area

Founded in 1987, Helena Food Share provides emergency food to over 1,500 local families each month. Join us as we tour the food pantry and learn about how Helena Food Share is continually adapting to support the 1 in 7 Helena residents (and 1 in 5 children) struggling with hunger and food insecurity. HFS will also share plans for their new Community Food Resource Center, which will utilize energy efficient building design and include an expanded food market, warehouse space, a production kitchen, teaching kitchen, and community gathering space. Tour capped at 30 participants.

10:00-11:30am— Restoration, Conservation & Agriculture: A Walk Through the Sevenmile Restoration Site

Just a few miles NW of Helena, Prickly Pear Land Trust owns and manages the 358 acre Sevenmile Creek Project Area . Historically used for agricultural purposes, PPLT is working with a host of public and private partners to reestablish the landscape as a functioning floodplain. Rebuilding the degraded Sevenmile Creek will help native wildlife, vegetation, and fisheries to expand and thrive, while also relieving flooding downstream and preventing sediments from entering Helena’s water. Join for a short 2 mile interpretive walk guided by PPLT. Tour capped at 30 participants. Note: We will be off-trail walking through pastures and along gravel roads. Bring appropriate footwear and clothing.

12:30-1:45pm— A Peek Into the Kitchen: Local Food Procurement at The Hopper (LUNCH TOUR)

The Hopper , established in 2022, specializes in scratch-made and locally sourced fare. While enjoying lunch, we will meet owners Dan and Chelsi Bay, and see behind the scenes into how this business is procuring local ingredients. Tour capped at 25 participants. Lunch costs $7-$17 per person.

2:30-4:00pm— Nourished by the Soil, Powered by the Sun: Solar Energy and Community Gardens

Helena Community Gardens manages 10 gardens across the city. Jubilee Garden at St. Mary’s Catholic Church also shares space with a solar system, which powers the parish and priest’s living quarters. Volunteers have also been experimenting with growing produce within the solar array between the panels, maximizing the use of this small urban space. On this tour, we will speak with members of the St. Mary’s Community and Helena Community Gardens, as well as solar experts, about the natural pairing of gardens and solar energy systems. Tour capped at 40 participants.

2:30-4:00pm— Widening the Processing Bottleneck: Old Salt Co-op’s New Butchering Facilities

Talk with anyone who produces meat in Montana, and they will tell you that there are not enough options for local processing in the state. Just four meatpacking companies control 85% of the market in the US, and local processors frequently get backlogged (the number of cattle slaughtered in Montana increased 75% during the pandemic). Enter Old Salt Co-op . Old Salt is establishing its own vertically integrated processing in the Helena area which can handle multiple species for both custom exempt and USDA inspected meat products. We will visit both the new slaughter facility and cut & wrap facility, and chat with owner Cole Mannix about the challenges and opportunities for local processing. Tour capped at 40 participants.
