Day trips around Alice Springs

Alice Springs is the perfect base from which to explore the Red Centre.

Flying into Alice Springs can feel like you’re travelling to another planet. A city surrounded by a vibrant red vastness, it looks as though it’s been dropped from the sky.  Alice Springs  is the only city in the  Red Centre , making it a convenient base to spring off and explore the awe-inspiring surrounding landscapes.

Here are just a few of the most amazing things to do around Alice Springs.

West MacDonnell Ranges

Ormiston Gorge, West Macdonnell Ranges, NT © Tourism NT/Jess Caldwell & Luke Riddle

Where: A one-hour drive west from Alice Springs.

Floating in a refreshing, natural plunge pool in the middle of the desert is one of outback Australia's most memorable experiences. You’ll find ample opportunities to do just that in the spectacular Tjoritja West MacDonnell National Park (otherwise known as the ‘West Macs’), located just outside of Alice Springs. With over 161km (100mi) of natural beauty and natural water holes, it makes for a great water hole hopping day trip from Alice Springs.

Alice Springs Desert Park

Alice Springs Desert Park, Alice Springs, Northern Territory © Tourism Australia

Where: A 15-minute drive from the centre of Alice Springs.

Bust the myth that the desert is "dead" at the Desert Park on the outskirts of Alice Springs. This stunning park – part wildlife sanctuary, part botanic garden – is a mix of carefully re-created desert habitats (sand, woodland and desert rivers) and is bursting with life. Get up close to kangaroos, watch birds of prey in free flight, walk through aviaries, see snakes and animals that normally only make an appearance after dark and marvel at delicate desert wildflowers. You’ll learn how Aboriginal people find food and medicine in the desert and how these plants have cleverly adapted to their dry environment.

MacDonnell Ranges, East MacDonnell National Park, Northern Territory © Tourism Australia

Where: A 15-minute drive south-east of Alice Springs city centre.

The area around Alice Springs is associated with the Caterpillar Dreaming (Yeperenye) creation story that tells how the MacDonnell Ranges were formed by great mounds of caterpillars, killed in a battle with their enemies, the stink bugs. The gaps in the ranges, including the one at the southern entrance to Alice Springs, were made when the heads of the caterpillars were bitten off. There are several sacred sites around town, but the most impressive is the caterpillar rock art that covers the rock walls at the East MacDonnell Ranges'   Emily Gap , 10km (6mi) east of town along the Ross Highway. You can drive, cycle or join a tour.

Kangaroo Sanctuary

Where: A 20-minute drive from Alice Springs.

A baby kangaroo is called a joey, and it's almost impossible not to fall in love at first sight with the adorable orphaned joeys being cared for by Chris Barnes (better known as "Brolga", star of the hit television series, Kangaroo Dundee). Chris's Kangaroo Sanctuary is about a 20-minute drive from Alice Springs, and open for tours Tuesday through Friday in the late afternoons. Tours, which include bus transfers from Alice Springs, last about 2.5 hours and you’ll get the chance to meet some of the beautiful red kangaroos that are typical of the Red Centre. Depending on his filming schedule, you might even get to meet Kangaroo Dundee himself.

Desert Art Trail

Where: The trail starts just a five-minute drive from Alice Springs.

Learn about the fascinating world of Aboriginal art by visiting the art galleries of Alice Springs. Start at the Araluen Arts Centre , which contains several galleries of Central Australian Aboriginal art as well as one of the country's largest collection of works by the renowned Albert Namatjira. The Tjanpi Desert Weavers  – a group of more than 400 women artists from 26 remote communities – make beautiful baskets adorned with seeds and feathers, as well as quirky fibre sculptures of dogs and desert animals. Tangentyere Artists  also produce quirky sculptures as well as beautiful fabrics, blankets and jewellery, all made from recycled metal, wood and abandoned objects. In Todd Mall, the pedestrianised shopping strip of Alice Springs, Papunya Tula Artists and Mbantua Gallery  are good places to buy beautiful painted canvases to take home.

Finke Gorge National Park

Palm Valley, Finke Gorge National Park, NT © Tourism NT

Palm Valley, Finke Gorge National Park, Northern Territory © Tourism NT

Where: About a two-hour drive west of Alice Springs.

Another spectacular national park on Alice Springs’ doorstep is Finke Gorge . Home to one of the world’s oldest rivers – over 350 million years old – this remarkable landscape is lined with unique and age-old nature. Explore Palm Valley by foot or 4WD, where a plethora of distinctive flora and fauna grow including the vibrant red cabbage palms that are endemic to this area.

Alice Springs Day Trips

There is plenty of sightseeing in Central Australia that can be experienced in bite-sized day trips and tours from Alice Springs. Using the town as your base, or visiting without camping gear, does not mean you will miss out on visiting the spectacular mountain-range landscape of the West and East MacDonnell Ranges.

If you decide to hire a vehicle, ensure you take plenty of food and water, as conditions can change even over the course of a day. A four-wheel drive is required for access to some tracks, like John Hayes Rockhole. You may need to drive on some unsealed roads; read on below and talk to your car hire company about the most suitable vehicle for your itinerary.

West MacDonnell Ranges

A primarily sealed route on Larapinta and Namatjira drives, there are some gravel access along the way, such as Simpsons Gap and Standley Chasm. Depending on the number of stops and how much you do, the trip can last for a half day or full day. Take your swimmers for Ormiston Gorge and Ellery Creek Big Hole, sturdy walking shoes, and a camera. Tours are operated by Emu Run, AAT Kings and Outback Tour Services.

Glen Helen Gorge couple

Glen Helen Gorge

Hermannsburg and Palm Valley

Following Larapinta Drive, a trip out to Hermannsburg encompasses historical and cultural sites. About an hour and a half south-west from Alice Springs is Hermannsburg, and another 40 minutes beyond Hermannsburg is Palm Valley. Join a tour with AAT Kings, Emu Run or Outback Elite Tours experience.

Finke Gorge NP view

Palm Valley

East MacDonnell Ranges

Head east along the Ross Highway and delve into rock formations, cultural and historical sites that are located along the East Macs. Emily and Jessie Gaps are less than 20 minutes from town, or start at the very east end at Ruby Gap, a three-hour drive. Trephina and N’Dhala Gorge are not-to-be missed, with cave drawings and swimming holes. Tours are operated by Emu Run, AAT Kings and Outback Tour Services.

Trephina Gorge 2

Trephina Gorge

Rainbow Valley

The spectacular cliffs that form this valley are best seen in the early morning or late afternoon sun. This is when you will understand how the area got its name. There is the option of joining a tour departing from Alice Springs, with operators such as Spirit Safaris, Outback Elite Tours or Sandrifter. Otherwise, set your alarm for an early start before tackling the one-hour drive,  Rainbow Valley is accessible by car (4WDs recommended), the first 75-kilomeres is the Stuart Highway and the last 22-kilometres is an unsealed dirt track.

Rainbow Valley picnic

Chambers Pillar

There is the option to loop a visit to Chambers Pillar in on the same day trip or tour to Rainbow Valley. If you’d prefer to visit the historical reserve on its own, then you’re looking at a three-hour journey following Maryvale Road. You’ll also see some of the Finke Desert Race track. The 50-metre-high pillar is unmissable, and there is a viewing platform at its base. Tour operators include Outback Elite Tours and Spirit Safaris.

Just two hours from Alice Springs is Gemtree Roadhouse and Caravan Park. Open to day trippers, the park is known for its tag-a-long fossicking tours. Don’t forget to pack a towel as you will get wet. Enjoy lunch overlooking Harts Range and artwork from the Outdoor Gallery on the drive back into town.

  • jajavalB 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles One trip, all styles of adventure experience I did this tour on Sunday october 2023, first stop after long drive(120km) is Hermannsburg historical precinct. unfortunately, this precinct will be closed till April 2024; so we just had morning tea/coffee outside the attraction. There is church service in the nearby lutheran church. Then we headed west to the unsealed road to Palm valley; it’s fun, bumpy jumpy ride along the way to the first stop(picnic area) for toilet, After that we stilopped at cycad gorges where santuary of ancient trees thrives for thousand years. Finally, we arrived Palm valley, nature wonders that palm trees grow in isolated area , thousand miles from their counterparts; I did bush walk along the valley then climbed up to the ridge , walking back to the car park. It concluded my tour with wonderful experience. Read more Written October 31, 2023

  • David D 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Interesting tour My wife and I undertook this fantastic and worthwhile tour to different highlight venues in Alice Springs. We were so fortunate to have Barry, our Coach Driver and very knowledgeable tour guide. The first stop was ANZAC lookout which not only gave a great outlook of Alice Springs but more importantly the prior and current countries in which our brave service personnel served/and are currently serving. We were then taken to the studio of School of the Air. For those who aren’t aware, this educational facility offers distant education to remote communities and properties which is a must for our young upcoming children. The next stop was at the historical Overland Telegraph Line which many years ago joined Australia to the global telegraph network. This is a historical and worthwhile visit. The Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS). An amazing medical service for a vast and remote country such as Australia. It goes without saying that for not only emergency situations, this service offers general medical professionals to many remote communities being attended to by air. We next visited the Reptile Park. It was an interesting insight into the reptiles. Our guide was very animated and informative, recommend this also, Read more Written August 12, 2023
  • 924caroliner 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Misleading Pick Up Time and Unavailable Customer Service On the top of the ticket it say 7:00 in bold for the pick up time, then in the fine print it provides earlier times for pick up by hotel. We were 10 minutes late for the listed hotel pick up time but early for the 7 AM time. The bus had left and made no effort to call or talk to the front desk of our hotel (per the company this is company policy). We tried to call them (again before 7 AM) but the company isn’t actually open until 9 AM. Our hotel was somehow able to get a hold of them and they said they would try and reach the driver and then hung up on us. The have offered a ticket on the bus for the next day, however that wasn’t an option for us due to hotels being booked already. While we may have missed the pick up time by 10 minutes, the situation could have been avoided if we were able to reach someone immediately or if they had attempted to contact us. • Qisiang R 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Alice Springs, Uluru, Kata Tjuta, King's Canyon and MacDonnell Ranges After two and a bit years of Covid enforced “home-stay”😊, we finally started our touring again. As a “test case” as well as revision of touring skills, we’ve chosen to tour within our home country first. As I had never been to the interior of Australia, Alice Spring was going to be our “pseudo overseas“ tour. At the time of travelling, the airlines were not in full capacity and as a result of this limitation, the plane flew to Sydney from Melbourne first before heading back west to Alice Spring. Travelling during the month of June means more “user friendly” weather. The five days we were there, the top temperature never exceeds 23C. Yes, Uluru is very unique and with spectacular colour changes all the time (especially sun rise and sun set, you obviously need to stay at least one night at Uluru). We joined a group tour with sunset BBQ dinner under the stars. We were given an astrology 101 presentation after the dinner and the whole experience was wonderful. The coach driver had informed us that there were tourists who travelled on their own mistook Mt. Conner as Uluru. But from a distance I am not surprised that some people fell for it. Obviously Mt. Conner is inside a private property whereas Uluru has lots of tourists around all the time. We did the King’s Canyon walking trail (again with a tour guide, note this trail has no toilet facility)) and it could be challenging for some of tourists. We were told if we could not complete the first 100 steps, then we could not continue the walk (all up about 3-3.5 hours). The walk was worth the effort as all the beautiful scenery can only be reached by foot. Our tour also included Kata Tjuta, Standley Chasm, Ellery Creek Big Hole and MacDonnell Ranges. Together with the tyranny of distance and limited roads around Alice Springs (quite a few doubling back from one place to another) touring this place requires a good solid research and planning, and it pays to allow more time for the whole trip. Food could be quite expensive as compared to other regional towns. In the end it was a bit of an effort to tour but it is worth the trouble. Read more Written March 1, 2023
  • David K 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic tour! We were a small group of six and Barry was our excellent driver who was very informative about the locations we were seeing on the 4 hour tour. This was a very interesting insight into this town, so remote from other civilisation. We visited ANZAC Hill, the School of the Air, the first telegraph station and the Royal Flying Doctors, but the unexpected highlight was the final stop, the reptile centre. We had assumed this was just going to be a look at some interesting Australian critters, but it was actually a talk and tour by Rex- what a character! Extremely informative about how dangerous snakes can be and the consequences of not giving them due respect. A real eye opener. Not to be missed. Read more Written February 6, 2023

Our driver Martin did an excellent job. The combination of the visit to the historic Hermannsberg Mission site and then the chance to explore the landscape of this extraordinary part of the world was a wonderful balance. Alice Springs

Located just 200 kilometres from the geographical centre of Australia is the outback town of Alice Springs, affectionately known as ‘Alice'.

There's plenty to see and do in and around this isolated town; visit the home of unique outback community services the Royal Flying Doctor Service and School of the Air , wander through the town centre where you'll find local Aboriginal art on display and meet friendly locals who'll share their amazing stories about life in the outback.

The historic Telegraph Station is a must-see on a visit to Alice Springs. Built in 1872 as part of the Overland Telegraph line linking Adelaide to Darwin and Australia to the world, it's a window into Australia's pioneering past.

Alice Springs is bordered by the rugged MacDonnell Ranges and has a range of incredible Red Centre experiences right on its doorstep. Follow the Red Centre Way from Alice Springs to the remote Aboriginal community of Hermannsburg and you'll witness the landscapes that inspired renowned Australian artist Albert Namatjira, who was born in this former German missionary town.

Travel further west through the breathtaking desert terrain of the West MacDonnell Ranges and you'll discover unique natural wonders like Standley Chasm and Palm Valley , an oasis of palm trees in the rugged surroundings of Finke Gorge National Park.

Alice is also a gateway to Australia's magnificent outback country, including iconic destinations including Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and Kings Canyon and is part of the famous rail journey on The Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin.
