The reserve is home to three quarters of a million wild animals, including leopards, lion, hippo, crocodile, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, waterbuck, baboon, sable and roan antelope, and the elusive wild dog and black rhino. Here roam the mightiest population of elephants in East Africa and the biggest population of buffalo anywhere on the African continent. Selous offers an amazing introduction to unspoiled Africa. The game viewing is superb (especially in the peak season months) and the wilderness on display is some of the most untouched in Africa. Moreover, Selous has the greatest diversity of safari activities of all the Tanzanian safari parks. Each day, you will travel further afield, enjoying the benefits of different transportation options: Drift by boat on the rivers and lakes, approaching birds and animals closely (including crocodile and hippo); stretch your legs with a walking safari, inviting a real likelihood of encountering big game such as elephant, buffalo, and even lion; or opt for a game drive in an open 4×4 vehicle and experience first-hand the remoteness of this park when you realize that your vehicle will generally be the only one around! During your Selous adventure, you will be staying at the Selous Riverside Safari Camp. The camp consists of 10 spacious and beautifully decorated luxury tents, all with comfortable beds and en-suite bathrooms including a shower and wash basin, hot and cold running water, and a flush toilet. Each room also has a private veranda offering a commanding view of the Rufiji River. The camp has a pool located on the deck overlooking the river.
Kindly note that this safari does not run from April 1st to May 31st. For safety reasons, only children 12 and over may do the walking safaris.

The reserve lies within the African Great Lakes region , and is teeming with an extraordinary array of fauna and flora.

The reserve is an excellent safari destination for families , friends , and honeymooners . Guests can enjoy a variety of activities, including boating safaris, nature walks, fly-camping, and game drives.
Here’s how to get the most out of your Selous Game Reserve safari.
Where is Selous Game Reserve?
Selous Game Reserve is in southern Tanzania. It covers an area of 50,000 km² of grassy plains, open woodland, forests, and mountains. Making it much greater than the Serengeti National Park .
The reserve has northern and southern parts.
- Northern Selous : This area covers around 5% of the reserve’s total area. It’s dedicated to photographic safaris.
- Southern Selous : The area lies south of the Rufiji River. It splits up into various concessions for hunting. Professional hunting companies lease these out to clients.
How to get to the Selous Reserve?
Though this beautiful place is in the midst of untouched Africa, it’s easily accessible from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. There are three modes of transportation options to choose from: air , road , or rail .
- By road : Taking a road trip from Dar es Salaam involves driving through the Mikumi National Park. This gives visitors a chance to pass through the Morogoro town and rural villages as well.
- By railroad : Another way to get to Selous is through the Tanzania Zambia Railway System. It begins in Dar es Salaam and makes a stop in Matambwe. This ±5-hour experience offers a panoramic tour of the country’s rural landscapes.
- By air : An alternative way to get to the Selous Tanzania Reserve is by air. There are a number of departure flights leaving Dar (Julius Nyerere International Airport) and Zanzibar each day. It’s a quick twenty-minute charter flight to Selous from Dar es Salaam and only an hour from Zanzibar to one of the reserve’s airstrips.

Activities and Safari Tours in Selous Game Reserve
Due to its great wildlife diversity and dramatic landscapes, in 1982, UNESCO declared Selous Game Reserve a World Heritage Site .
As one of Africa’s largest protected areas , the Selous Game Reserve is one of the few large reserves in the world to allow your pick of walking, fly-camping, and boating safaris. This reserve offers trips by boat , vehicle , and on foot .
The Selous is teeming with wildlife. With over 2000 species of flora, 440 bird species, and a wide range of animal species. It’s also home to one of the largest concentration of elephants on the continent. As well as the largest population of buffalo in Africa.
Its game population is thriving and includes brindled gnu , sable antelope , Nyasaland gnu , eland , and lots more. Here’s how you can see them all.
Boat cruises
The permanent waterways and channels spread like veins throughout the reserve. There are river safari cruises all year round in the Selous, setting it apart from any other reserve or park in Tanzania .
On the reserve, there are hot volcanic springs, channels, and sporadic lakes from the nearby rivers. The Great Ruaha and Rufiji rivers add an incredible setting of abundant wildlife near the edges of the water.
The Rufiji River attracts large herds of elephants . This river flows through the reserve and provides one of the most popular safari boat trips.
Get up close to crocodiles and hippopotamuses in their natural habitat on a superb boating experience.
Game drive safaris
Morning 4×4 safari game drives provide a spectacular sighting of animals. As the early mists lift, wildlife begins to forage and hunt. Spot wild dogs , lions , endangered black rhino , and lots more on these drives.
Nighttime safaris are also possible. Discover glowing eyes and moving vegetation as hints of animals hiding in the dark from their predators.
Walking safaris
Taking a safari in one of the most remote reserves in Africa is as close to nature as it gets. A walking safari provides the ultimate bush experience accompanied by expert trackers and guides. This is something not offered or possible in northern Tanzania’s game reserves and national parks.
All lodges in the reserve provide guided walks with professional guides.
Note: In most lodges, children need to be over the ages of 12 years to join a walking safari. At Lake Manze River Camp and Impala River Camp, children need to be over the ages of 6 years old to stay at one of these campsites. And over the ages of 16 years to join a walking safari.
For guests seeking a unique opportunity, some of the lodges and camps offer overnight fly camping .
Experience a safari walk or drive to the sleepout point and then sleep under the African stars .
Your shelter might be a mosquito net strung up or an actual tent with a bucket shower. Park rangers and a chef will accompany you to make for a dreamy stay.
Maasai community visits
While Selous provides a range of wildlife to see, the region’s human residents provide another kind of experience. Explore local Maasai villages dotted at the outer edges of the reserve, with an expert guide.
These trips allow you to take a unique look into the Maasai’s unique tribal way of life and culture.
Best Time of Year to Visit Selous, Tanzania
Selous Game Reserve is a dry season park. This means the safaris progressively get better later in the season. So the best time to visit the Selous Game Reserve is from June to October .
During the dry season, wildlife is easier to spot . Animals gather near water sources, and the vegetation is thinner. One of the popular areas for animal sightings is the Rufiji River.
Keep in mind, this time of year is peak season , and prices are much higher. The dry season provides little to no rain and plenty of sunshine.
During the low season (wet period), which runs from March to May , the prices are more competitive. Accommodation can be tricky during the low season as many lodges close due to fewer visitors.
Thanks to abundant rainfall, the landscape is filled with greenery. Bird watching this time of year is world-class as migratory birds flock together.
Where to Stay in Selous Game Reserve
The Selous Game Reserve is home to outstanding Tanzania safari camps and lodges. Accommodation is mostly concentrated in the Northern part of the reserve .
The Beho Beho Camp and Sand Rivers Selous are extraordinary lodges and offer a range of activities. These luxury, all-inclusive lodges provide an intimate safari treat for guests seeking amazing wildlife encounters. They provide the perfect setting for a unique romantic getaway.
Siwandu Safari Camp is a stylish tented camp and arguably in the best area of the park. It’s nestled on the Rufiji River banks amongst the dense forest.
Nearby to Siwandu Camp is Lake Manze Camp , an adventurous camp with a reputation for being an elephant highway. A little further is the sister camp, the luxury Selous Impala Camp .
Other popular camps in the park include Foxes’ Rufiji River Camp and Selous Mbuyu Safari Camp .
No matter where you stay in Selous, you will get amazing value in luxury lodges.
Malaria and Safety in the Selous Tanzania Reserve
When going on a wildlife safari, following instructions from your expert guide will ensure safety. Although serious incidents on organized safaris rarely occur.
There is a risk of malaria throughout the country. This excludes high altitude areas over 2000 m, such as Mt. Kilimanjaro , some parts of the Eastern Arc Mountains, and the Ngorongoro Crater .
Most of the safari parks in Tanzania are high-risk zones, especially during the rainy season. To protect yourself, wear long-sleeve clothing in the evenings and apply mosquito repellent .
Plan Your Visit to the Selous Reserve
From pods of hippos in the waters to buffalo wallowing on the river’s edge, the Selous Game Reserve provides an iconic wildlife experience .
With the bisecting Rufiji River, vast grasslands, and thick woodlands – Selous Game Reserve provides a panoramic take on nature . Why not get the camera rolling and start to plan a safari trip to Tanzania?

This authentic 4-day safari itinerary takes you straight into one of Tanzania’s prettiest hidden gems – Selous Game Reserve . Ideal for those wishing to enjoy an authentic safari experience with family and friends, away from crowds and other travelers.
Return transport from Dar-es-salaam or Zanzibar is by air to minimize the time spent traveling and maximize the time spent on safari. Accommodation is in comfortable Selous Impala Camp, a small wilderness retreat, not far from the beautiful Lakes Siwandu and Mzizimia, and overlooking the Rufiji River.
Expect fantastic game viewing, exciting daily activities, wonderful hospitality and unforgettable memories.
The tour begins from Dar-es-salaam with a flight to Selous Game Reserve where you spend 3 nights at the Selous Impala Camp, a semi luxury tented camp overlooking the celebrated Rufiji River, the defining feature of Africa’s biggest game reserve.
Selous is home to the Big 5 and Africa’s top predators like lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and spotted hyena. The reserve is also famous for its large buffalo and elephant herds, and sizeable populations of giraffe, hippo and sable antelope.
Selous Impala Camp is a traditional tented safari camp with just 8 guest tents set on raised stilts on the banks of the mighty Rufiiji River between Lakes Mzizimia and Siwandu in the Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania. The camp is superbly located for some of the best game viewing in the Reserve.
Each guest tent is set on raised stilts with its own private deck, ideal for relaxing in the heat of the day before the evening game drive or sitting out with your morning coffee and watching the animal life on the river in front of you.
Two of the tents share a deck and these are therefore ideal for a family. Every room has an en-suite bathroom with shower, flush loo and twin washbasins. The decor is simple with local colors and fabrics but perfectly comfortable and remains a traditional safari feel to them.
Game viewing can be done in a variety of ways. The experienced guides can take you out by boat to discover the secrets which lie in the waters of the Rufiji River. Boat safaris can be organized in the morning or in the afternoon. It is a unique experience to see the wildlife from a different point of view.
The camp has six landrovers and four boats as well as a walking safari team with an armed guide. It is also possible to arrange fly-camping. If you wish to go fishing the camp can also arrange this for you at an additional cost for the rod hire.

Days 2 & 3: Selous Game Reserve
Spend day two and three exploring Selous Game Reserve on 4×4 game drives in an open-sided safari vehicle. Africa’s largest game reserve, Selous is an incredibly vast wilderness area spanning 54 600 km². That’s more than three times the size of the Serengeti National Park which covers about 14 760km².

Selous is also noted for its high plant and wildlife diversity. On our game drives, we get to experience the diverse habitats of Selous, from grassland plains and wetlands to woodlands and riverine forests. We stop to watch animals and birds, take photos and have picnic lunches at scenic spots overlooking the lakes.
What animals will we see in Selous? Common wildlife sightings include hippos, endangered wild dogs, wildebeest and lions, along with plenty of plains game such as zebras, giraffes and a variety of antelopes. Selous game reserve is home to the Big Five of Africa. In addition to lions, buffalos and elephants are commonly sighted.
Leopards are occasionally seen but rhinos are only found in the southern part of Selous. There are plenty of crocodiles and spotted hyenas so chances of spotting these carnivores are high. Antelope species include sable, puku, greater kudu, eland, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, bushbuck, duiker, klipspringer, oryx, waterbuck and an abundance of impalas.
At the end of our exciting days of game viewing in Selous, we return to the lodge for a refreshing dip in the pool and sundowners next to the Rufiji River. Safari & Beach With Kids
10 nights from $3470 per person, safari&beach favourites, take a look at some of our favourite destinations below, northern circuit, big 5 game spotting | serengeti | ngorongoro crater | great migration.
Choose a Northern Circuit tour and you’ll be focused on the Serengeti – one of the biggest and most popular Tanzania parks. Famous for its stunning open plains populated by rare and numerous wildlife, it also gives the potential to see the great wildebeest migration, depending on when you travel.
A Northern Circuit safari is usually conducted in a private 4wd vehicle with your own private guide, and should include a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater, which has a high density of game living freely within the crater basin. Time permitting, you should also try to visit The Tarangire, particularly in the dry season, or the stunning Lake Manyara National Park to try and spot the spectacular flamingo or tree climbing lion.
Lake Manyara National Park is a small park (330kmsq) set beneath the spectacular Rift valley escarpment and alongside the shallow alkaline Lake Manyara.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area, covers an extensive 8300 sq km, with the celebrated natural wonder, the Ngorongoro Crater, at its centre.
Arusha is Tanzania’s “safari town” being the gateway to the wonderful northern parks. The climate is excellent and the town sits beautifully within the foothills of the Mt.Meru.
The Serengeti is, in our opinion, the finest game reserve in Africa. A vast and stunningly beautiful wilderness with its open and grassy plains occasionally broken up by isolated granite koopjes and areas of acacia woodland.
The view of Kilimanjaro rising up from its flat surrounding plains with its distinctive snow-capped peak is one of Africa’s iconic sights.
The rolling hills, abundant boabab trees, mixed woodland and river valley make this a very attractive park which is often missed out by travellers on the mainstream safari circuit.
SOUTH AND WESTERN PARKS
Selous | elephants | off the beaten track | walking safaris.
The south and west of Tanzania offer a huge range of stunning parks, often with fewer (human) visitors than those in the more famous northern parks. Take the Selous Game Reserve, for example. The largest park in Tanzania and one of the greatest reserves in the world, the Selous offers ample wildlife, with a great choice of vehicular, walking and river safaris.
Also forming part of the southern circuit is Ruaha, Tanzania’s second largest park and home to the largest population of elephant. If you have the time, staying at one of a handful of its lodges really does offer an out of Africa experience. The western parks of Mahale and Katavi are also worth a visit for something really special and away from it all, including mountains, flood plains and lakes.
Nyerere National Park is Africa’s largest game reserve with a very high-quality game viewing area offering a wonderful mix of vehicular and river safaris.
Tanzania’s second largest park at 10,300 sq kms, it forms part of a wild and extended ecosystem that extends far and wide through six other protected areas within the south and west of Tanzania.
Stretching along the lakeshore of the crystal clear waters of Lake Tanganyika, the deserted sandy beaches and stunning backdrop of forested mountains makes this is a totally entoxicating place to visit.
COAST AND ISLANDS
White beaches | blue seas | diving | luxury.
A trip to Tanzania, though more than satisfying with its safari options, would surely be incomplete without a trip to the coast. The stunning white beaches of Zanzibar, more remote Pemba or Mafia islands, or the Tanzania mainland coast, are all easily accessible and not to be missed.
The Zanzibar Archipelago is made up of fifty islands. Zanzibar itself conjures all kinds of romantic travel emotions, with plenty to invigorate the senses. The Mafia Archipelago to the south is a stunning mix of islands in a pure azure sea. And whilst Tanzania’s mainland coastline is often overlooked, Rus Katani, a small luxury safari style beach lodge, lies on a wide sandy beach and is a perfect spot for honeymooners seeking a rest before embarking on the rest of your safari and beach holiday
Although Pemba island lies just 50 km north of Zanzibar, it has remained unchanged and relatively untouched by tourism. Unlike its neighbour, it has a far more hilly, fertile and lush landscape.
Dar Es Salaam (Dar) is Tanzania’s largest city, – the commercial and social centre of the country with a lively and bustling character.
Mafia is a relatively unknown and untouched island, where rustic fishing communities and farming villages go about their lives in a way that has existed for generations.
If you have more time or would like to start or end your trip with a few days of perfect relaxation then there are some charming beach options along the coast.
Your own island hideaway within easy reach of the mainland coast. Life doesn’t get much better than this,
The spice island – Robinson Crusoe escapism and tropical hideaway. Turquoise seas lapping whitest of sands & oozing Swahili charm.

I had a great time and let me know if you want to get some more feedback on any of the properties suggested by you and also Pongwe Beach which excellent.
Many thanks for a truly great holiday! Nyerere National Park was a great success as we saw the wild dogs on 2 occasions and some great lion kills. In fact we saw a pride of 10 lion including cubs within 10 mins of landing in the Nyerere National Park! Zanzibar was wonderful! The sunshine hotel was beautiful and the staff were lovely.

You will arrive at the Selous – Mtemere Airstrip early in the morning, by 9:30 a.m., where you will be welcomed and taken to the Selous Park , the largest park in all of Africa (Flight from Dar Es Salam or Zanzibar not included, except on request).
Arriving at the Selous Wildlife Reserve, you will begin enjoying the beautiful day of boat safari . The Selous is in fact one of the few parks in Africa where you can do a game drive in water .
You will explore the Rufiji River and some of the lakes in Selous, accompanied by a guide, with special open boats having canvas roofs. Boat safaris are the ideal way to enjoy the wonderful scenery of the Rufiji River with its many hippos, crocodiles, and multitudes of birds. Certainly not to be missed is the sunset view from the boat, in which the tranquillity of the river and the cry of the hippos around you syncs with the scenery of the sun descending below the horizon.
Packed lunch will be served at the park.
Dinner and overnight accommodation at the lodge
Selous Park
We continue exploring the Selous with a jeep photo safari after breakfast.
The wildlife reserve of Selous ( Selous Game Reserve ) is one of the largest wildlife parks in the world, with a total area of 54,600 square kilometres. Some wildlife typical of the savannah (such as elephants, hippos, lyacons and crocodiles) are found in the Selous in higher concentrations than any other African park.
The vast beauty of the Selous and its abundance of wildlife are exceptional, and one of the attractions of the Selous in particular is the intimacy and authenticity of a safari here, where you can go for hours without encountering any other vehicle.
We will stop at a shaded space for picnic lunch during the hottest part of the day, usually under a large tree overlooking a lake – this can sometimes be one of the highlights of the day, as it is not uncommon for animals to come and drink while you enjoy your lunch.
Then the game drive continues into the afternoon.
Packed lunch in the park.
Dinner and overnight accommodation at the lodge.
Selous Park + Nature Walk + return by plane
We will take a nature walk after breakfast, accompanied by an armed Park Guard and our guide.
Walking safaris are a great way to get closer to nature and learn more about the smaller species and their ecosystem. You can spot giraffes, walk in the footsteps of elephants, learn to identify animal tracks and discover fascinating information about insects, trees and colourful birds. Walks are slow and last about 2-3 hours.
Lunch will be served at the camp.
You will then be taken to Dar Es Salam or Zanzibar by local flight in the afternoon (flight not included, except on request).
Your adventure to discover Tanzania is has come to an end, but we are certain that you will return to Italy with a heart filled with memorable experiences.

8-day Fly in safari in Southern Tanzania visiting Selous & Ruaha
- Boating Safaris
- Family Safari
- Fly-in Safari
- Walking Safaris
This amazing 8 Days safari to Southern Tanzania will take to the largest Game reserve in the whole of Tanzania – the Selous Game Reserve as well as to Ruaha National Park; the largest national park in Tanzania and East Africa at large.
The safari tour begins in the busy commercial city of Dar- es – Salaam, and ends back at the capital. It is an 8-day fly in / fly out southern Tanzania safari package, so we will be including a flight from Dar es Salaam to Selous Game Reserve , another one from Selous to Ruaha National Park , and one last flight from Ruaha back to Dar es Salaam. On your return we can book for you a flight to Zanzibar instead, in case you which to combine this tour with a beach vacation in the Spice Islands of Zanzibar. Due to the large surface area of the parks, the airstrips that you will fly into in the parks will depend on the lodge or tented camp that you are staying in at Selous or Ruaha.
Both parks; Selous (now Nyerere National Park ) and Ruaha are some of the wildest parks that you can find in Africa due to their size, and the fact that they are visited by very few tourists. Selous is closer to Dar es Salaam and the park now has more visitors than before but still the numbers cannot be compared with the number of tourists that visit Northern Tanzania every year. Ruaha National Park on the other hand is still untouched with some of the lowest numbers of visitors per year, despite the park being the largest park in Tanzania.
Apart from traditional safari game drives in 4×4 safari jeeps, you will get a chance to do walking safaris in both Nyerere National Park (Selous) and Ruaha. Boat safaris and night safaris are also activities that can be done here in these two parks, which makes Southern Tanzania the best destination for those looking for an active safari package.

You will later return to you accommodation, relax by the campfire, have dinner and spend the night there. Overnight will be at the Selous Mivumo River Lodge . All meals included .
Explore Selous Game Reserve
During the next two days, (Day 2 and Day 3) you will explore the vast Selous Game Reserve in a four wheel drive safari vehicle (either with a pop-up roof or open on the sides).
Selous also known as the Nyerere National Park covers an area of 30893 square kilometers, which is almost twice the size of the renowned Serengeti National Park in northern Tanzania. This is what has been gazetted as the Nyerere National Park and now under the management of Tanzania National Park (TANAPA), which is now separated from the few hunting blocks that remain around Selous.
In 1982, the Selous was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its vast size and almost pristine wilderness. It’s believed that the Selous is among the largest untouched wilderness on the African continent, and it’s comprised of large plains, forests, rivers and lakes all of which serve as wildlife habitats.
During the game drives you will explore all these habitats as you search for Africa’s Big Five animals and the other different wild animals that live here among which are: lions, zebras, elands, impalas, buffalos, bushbucks, elephants, oryxs, crocodiles, waterbucks, hippos, sable antelopes, klipspringers, pukus, duikers, giraffes, greater kudus, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, as well as the occasional leopards and spotted hyenas, not forgetting the largest thriving population of the endangered wild dogs. Rhinos on the other hand, can only be seen within the southern part of the game reserve. Your driver / guide will be able to stop whenever you want to take photographs so don’t leave your camera behind.
Those of you enthusiastic about bird watching, well the Selous will not disappoint you at all. There are very many bird species found here some living within the forest, the river banks as well as in the swampy areas.
In the evenings at the end of your day’s adventure across the Selous, you will head back to the lodge and have a revitalizing dip in the swimming pool and sundowners near River Rufiji. Overnight at Selous Mivumo River Lodge . All meals included.
Transfer to Ruaha National Park, Afternoon Game Drive
Today will be the final morning within the Selous on your 8 days safari in Southern Tanzania. After your breakfast, your will be taken to the nearest airstrip where you will catch a direct flight to Ruaha National Park.
On landing in Ruaha, you will be met by by the camp/lodge guide who will drive you to you accommodation. He will brief you on how you are going to spend your days in Ruaha and give you the highlight of your forthcoming adventure in the Ruaha National Park. You will check into your accommodation and have lunch and some rest before heading out for an afternoon safari game drive until later in the evening when you will check back in for dinner and overnight.
The Ruaha National Park is a less popular and hidden safari destination within Southern Tanzania with a rich diversity of flora and fauna. You will get a more secluded safari experience compared to that in the more tourist crowded parks in northern Tanzania. Some of the animals you will see include herds of elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, wildebeests, various antelopes and maybe some lions.
Overnight at Ruaha River Lodge . All meals included.
Explore Ruaha National Park
Over the next three days, you will spend time exploring this well-kept natural wildlife habitat as you search for different wild animals, birds and learn more about the flora. There are full day game drives with a picnic lunch in between or half day game drives with a few hours break to return at your accommodation to freshen up and have a nice hot lunch before setting out for the afternoon game drives if you wish.
There are also a number of optional activities such as night game drives and the exciting and very rewarding hot air balloon safaris which will cost you an extra bucks (not included in this safari cost).
Special about Ruaha National Park is that it has one of the largest buffalo and elephant populations in East Africa, and an outstandingly big number of predators within its boundaries. It’s alleged that the second largest population of lions in the world is found in Ruaha. A large number of Cheetahs, the leopards and the endangered African Wild-dogs are also found within this park. So believe me not there is a lot to see within Ruaha a reason why we have dedicated all these days to game viewing and photography.
Birders, well get ready to be impressed as Ruaha has a record of more than 570 different bird species so you can never fail to identify quite a number of them during your adventure drives. Because the park is seated within the transitional zone where the southern and eastern ecosystems over-lap, it supports a remarkably diverse blend of habitats that support very big numbers of bird, animal and plant species.
Because the park is less visited, chances are that you complete your stay here without encountering any other tourists a thing that will give you a totally private safari experience. Overnight at Ruaha River Lodge . All meals included .
