Amal Clooney is opening up about how supportive her husband, George Clooney , is amid her mission to continue her humanitarian work.

In a new Glamour special report , 45-year-old Amal travels to Africa with the magazine's editor-in-chief, Samantha Barry, and discusses her goal to end child marriage. Melinda French Gates and former first lady  Michelle Obama also tag along as passionate advocates for the cause.

During the trip, the human rights lawyer speaks about how meaningful it is to have a supportive partner in her Oscar-winning spouse. The pair first met in 2013 and bonded over their joint love of campaign work. They married in September 2014 and welcomed their twins in June 2017.

"I have a partner who couldn't be more supportive," Amal says of George. "In my bag, on my way here, there was a note saying, 'I'm so proud of what you guys are all doing.'"

According to Amal, the 62-year-old actor's ardent support of her humanitarian aims is nothing new. She recalls her first time away from their now-6-year-old twins -- Alexander and Ella -- and how her husband calmed her nerves about leaving.

"My first trip as a working mom after having kids, George said, 'I've got this. You go. I'm driving them to school.' That makes things so much easier for me, but obviously, we're here because so many girls aren't as lucky," she shares.

Ending child marriage is a cause close to Amal's heart as a Lebanon native who fled with her family during the Lebanese Civil War. Her family moved to Buckinghamshire, England, where she was raised and educated before attending the New York University School of Law.

"I was born in a war zone, but I became educated because I was taken abroad as a refugee," Amal says. "I got to choose who I marry and to wait until I was in my late thirties, which seemed so old to them, but many girls are not so lucky and we want to play our part in making sure that more and more girls can have that freedom and that opportunity. So I hope we'll succeed."

During their trip to Africa, Amal, Melinda and Michelle met with school girls and organizations working to carve out a different path other than childhood marriage. " Glamour delves into the personal and professional relationships of three of the most well-known women in the world and talks to prominent lawyers and activists about what it will take to, once and for all, eradicate child marriage globally," a description for the report reads.

"It's the promise and possibility. Those girls are powerhouses. How these girls are fighting, literally fighting for their lives and still able to bring such joy and energy. You can hear their stories, but you don't see it on their faces," says Michelle of the girls in Malawi. "They haven't let their trauma break them down. These girls are fighting tooth and nail to occupy the few seats that are there, leaving their homes, walking for miles and miles and miles. They break my heart in all the right ways. They just go into my chest and grab my heart and pull it out, and they make me want to fight for them."

Amal Clooney’s Work, Explained by International Human Rights Lawyers

Amal Clooney and her colleague Geoffrey Robertson arrive for a hearing at the European Court of Human Rights in...

Most celebrity humanitarians—including Bono, Oprah, and Angelina Jolie —were famous before they were advocates. Not so for Amal Clooney. She went from a respected international human-rights lawyer to one of the planet’s most recognizable faces when she married a certain Oscar-winning George in September 2014. While the elevated public profile hampers how well she can keep some facts private (like that she’s expecting twins), it has improved her ability to call attention to marginalized groups, one of the most essential aspects of her job. Thanks to Clooney, even tabloids on either side of the pond now report on the Yazidi women who have been kidnapped, raped, and enslaved at the hands of ISIL.

Clooney has talked about the positive and negative aspects of her newfound fame. She recently told Fiona Bruce on BBC News at Six , “There is lots of my work that takes place behind closed doors that is not ever seen. I think if there are more people who now understand what’s happening about the Yazidis and ISIS, and if there can be some action that results from that, that can help those clients, then I think it’s a really good thing to give that case the extra publicity that it may get.”

But with so much of her work now filtered through tabloids, which are famously more concerned with her clothing than with her clients, it can be hard for readers to follow what happens. What does an international human rights lawyer do, and how is it different from the work of other lawyers both on TV and in real life? Vanity Fair spoke to several international human-rights lawyers to gain insight into their work and shed light on what Amal Clooney might do on a day-to-day basis.

“I think human-rights lawyers for a long time were thought of kind of like the hippie aspect of lawyers,” said Sara Elizabeth Dill, the director of criminal justice standards and policy at the American Bar Association in Washington, D.C. Dill has been aiding those hit by President Trump’s travel ban. Clooney and others, in Dill’s opinion, have brought “a level of professionalism and accomplishment” to the role. Since Clooney “came on the scene,” international human-rights lawyer Hilary Stauffer, who works at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said interest in her own work has spiked “100 percent.”

Since 2010, Clooney has been employed by Britain’s Doughty Street Chambers , where she specializes in public international law, international criminal law, and human rights. Previously, she worked as a defense attorney at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York, where she helped to represent former Enron executives and other corporate clients.

Clooney is well known in her field for not only defending government leaders who’ve gone to prison but also for advocating on behalf of neglected and exploited groups. “If you are a lawyer and you want to take on easier cases, you can prosecute traffic violations or something. You’d have a very high rate of success, and you probably could sleep more easily at night. But that’s not what drives me. I want to work on cases that I feel the most passionate about,” she said in an interview with NBC in January 2016.

Clooney detailed the human-rights violations suffered by 6,700 Yazidi women during her first U.N. appearance in November. Around that time, she and George founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice, where they serve as co-presidents. In addition, she has also been a visiting professor at Columbia Law School’s Human Rights Institute.

As an international criminal lawyer, Clooney has defended government leaders who’ve been removed from power, including former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko and former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed. Some of Clooney’s more contentious clients have included the dictatorial King of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa al Khalifa; Abdullah al Senussi , former intelligence chief to the late Libyan leader Muammer Gaddafi ; and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

“There really is no average day,” said Juliet S. Sorensen, Harry R. Horrow professor of international Law at Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law, and an associate of the school’s Center for International Human Rights. An international human-rights lawyer could be anywhere on the globe on a given day; ithey are constantly reading news to stay informed about where help might be needed. They meet with or take phone calls from people seeking assistance. Much of the job entails research and writing, but there is also immediate crisis response, such as helping procure food and medical attention for those in the area of the crisis.

“It’s almost social work, where you’re getting people psychological care; you’re helping people find housing. I’ve had to buy clients clothes from time to time,” said Dill. “You’re working with the most vulnerable populations in the world,” she continued, adding that oftentimes “they have no family, they have no support group, they’ve had to flee with the clothes on their backs, or everything they have is destroyed.”

For example, Clooney advised former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the plight of Syria, where a civil war has waged for the past six years (in January 2017, the U.N. announced that there were nearly 4.9 million registered Syrian refugees). When Clooney was just a toddler, her own family fled her native Lebanon during its civil war, eventually settling in England.

Evidence-gathering fieldwork involves locating victims and witnesses, conducting interviews and taking photographs. “Archiv[ing] the violations and abuses . . . is the only way you can achieve justice,” said Roueida El Hage, head of office of human rights in Kurdistan, Ninewa, and Kirkuk at the U.N. Assistance Mission in Iraq. The job can also be quite physical.

Lawyers will also enlist help from local community-based partners. “They will know the context and they’ll know the local law,” Bernstein Institute faculty director Margaret Satterthwaite, who is also a clinical professor at New York University’s Global Justice Clinic, said. According to Dill, “Providing testimony, lobbying Congress, working with other countries in terms of rule of law development, training judges and prosecutors and politicians” can all come into play, along with the nonstop task of educating the public.

Lengthy court cases “may not necessarily be the right way to get the result that you want,” said Stauffer, noting that most human rights lawyers don’t spend too much time before judges. “Most of the time you don’t win your cases, actually,” Sukti Dhital, deputy director of the Bernstein Institute for Human Rights at NYU Law, said. “But you get these small victories that kind of propel you to keep going.”

Defending the Armenian people, Clooney lost a case in the European Court of Human Rights in October 2015. There she challenged a Turkish politician who classified the 1915 Armenian genocide as an “international lie.” “The most important error made by the court below is that it casts doubt on the reality of the Armenian genocide that the people suffered a hundred years ago,” Clooney said . “The lower court reached its conclusions that the genocide was not proved or even provable without using any of the fact-gathering tools available to it.” Despite her arguments, his right to deny the massacre was upheld.

Satterthwaite added that a career of regularly confronting atrocities puts human-rights lawyers at risk of suffering “vicarious trauma.” “It is stressful, it is emotional, it is heartbreaking,” El Hage said.

The desire to serve, an enjoyment of public speaking, an analytical mind, creativity, and resilience were cited as characteristics international human-rights lawyers tend to possess. But Satterthwaite said that how a person responds to the Greek myth of Sisyphus—who spent eternity pushing a boulder uphill—is key.

“People who listen to that story and find it inspiring, not depressing” are best suited for this line of work, Satterthwaite said. Human rights lawyers, in Dill’s words, “look at the most horrific situations and see hope, and believe in the goodness of people.” Yet their greatest hope of all is for a future that renders their job obsolete.

Amal Clooney has paid tribute to the nation that took her and her family in as they fled unrest in her native Lebanon, as she made her first-ever visit to Toronto. “I am a refugee,” the Beirut-born human rights lawyer told a sold-out crowd during her talk at the city’s Roy Thomson Hall on Friday. “If I had not had a hand extended to me by the UK government when my family was escaping the war in Lebanon, I wouldn’t have been able to grow up in a safe environment, get the education I have, or do any of the things that I have done. I am so grateful to have been able to enter a country that showed compassion to me. I wish that were happening in more places around the world.”

The barrister flew into Canada to attend arts festival Luminato, where she appeared on-stage in an interview with her father-in-law, Nick Clooney. The broadcaster quizzed his daughter-in-law, who wed actor and director George Clooney in 2014, on the issues she has supported and advocated for during her illustrious career, including a recent separation of migrant children from their families in the US.

“It’s shameful. It’s not just illegal, it’s immoral,” said Amal, Toronto’s The Star reports. Her appearance came just days after Amal and George, who share 1-year-old twins Ella and Alexander, pledged to donate US $100,000 through their foundation to the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.  The couple made the donation in an effort to help children being forcibly separated from their parents at the US-Mexico border as part of a “zero tolerance” initiative pushed by President Donald Trump’s administration.

“At some point in the future our children will ask us: “Is it true, did our country really take babies from their parents and put them in detention centers?” the couple wrote in a statement. “And when we answer yes, they’ll ask us what we did about it. What we said. Where we stood. We can’t change this administration’s policy but we can help defend the victims of it.” Their donation comes only a few months after the husband and wife donated US$500,000 to the March for Our Lives, in the name of their children.

During her talk with her father-in-law, Amal also touched upon the #MeToo movement, describing it as a “powerful force for change”. “Feminism to me is women having choices,” she added, according to The Star. The lawyer later revealed that while she does not care for the term “celebrity”, the upside of her role in the public eye has been the ability to “turn a spotlight and put it on something important”.

George and Amal Clooney Won’t Travel to Certain Countries Now That They’re Expecting

In a shift for a couple that travels extensively to at-risk countries, they decided to cut back on travel: “We decided to be much more responsible.”

Now that George and Amal Clooney are expecting twins , the soon-to-be parents have revealed that they are making changes to their travel plans, taking more precaution than usual. As Clooney told a reporter, the couple will no longer visit certain areas where there is an increased risk for travelers, including several spots in Africa and the Middle East where they have previously gone for work.

This is a shift for the couple that has traveled extensively to such areas. Amal’s career as an international human rights attorney has regularly brought her to conflict zones, and Clooney has repeatedly visited the Darfur region of Sudan for his humanitarian work. But in speaking with Paris Match magazine, Clooney said that they plan to curb any travel that could pose a threat. “We decided to be much more responsible, to avoid the danger,” the actor explained. “I won’t go to South Sudan anymore or the Congo; Amal will no longer go to Iraq, and she’ll avoid places where she knows she isn’t welcome.”

Clooney continued to explain how impending parenthood has already transformed his travel philosophy: “Before, I did not care, I would even say that there was a pretty exciting side to going where no reporter had ever been,” he told the magazine.

While the couple will be cutting back on “dangerous” travel, don’t expect the Clooneys to stay in just one spot anytime soon. Clooney shared that he and Amal will continue to split time among their three residences until their twins—a boy and a girl—start their schooling.

“We have the chance to live between three countries: Italy, America and England,” he said. “But as soon as the children go to school, it’ll be necessary to choose where to settle. In the meantime, we will continue to move according to our respective schedule.”

Who Is Amal Alamuddin Clooney?

From lebanon to london.

Amal Ramzi Alamuddin was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on February 3, 1978. Her father was a professor at the American University in Beirut and owner of a travel agency, and her mother was a journalist. When Alamuddin was 2 years old, her family fled Lebanon to escape the ravages of the civil war that had begun in the mid-1970s and engulfed the country in violence.

The family settled in London, England, in 1980, and Alamuddin attended a small school on the city's outskirts. An excellent student, she earned a scholarship to attend Oxford University beginning in 1996. While there, she developed an interest in human rights, before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in law in 2000.

Distinguished Student and Lawyer

Alamuddin then entered the NYU School of Law to pursue a master’s degree. Beyond the classroom, she augmented her studies with several notable clerkships, working at the U.S. Court of Appeals with future Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and at the International Court of Justice. Alamuddin completed her studies in 2002 and passed the New York State Bar the same year.

After passing the bar, Alamuddin was employed at the New York City–based Sullivan & Cromwell, one of the top-ranked law firms in the world. Working as part of its defense group, Alamuddin represented many newsworthy clients, including Enron and Arthur Andersen during probes into their criminal activities.

In 2005, Alamuddin refocused her career on international law when she became part of a United Nations tribunal established to prosecute the persons responsible for the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri.

Law Career: Doughty Street Chambers

In 2010, Alamuddin returned to London to work as a barrister (a legal representative similar to a lawyer) for Doughty Street Chambers, a firm with a strong history of civil liberties work. She went on to handle several high-profile cases in international courts, including the defense of former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko; Muammar al-Qaddafi ’s intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi; and WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Julian Assange .

Beyond her criminal defense cases, Alamuddin has also held several important advisory roles, including working with Kofi Annan for a United Nations commission on Syria and acting as counsel during a 2013 inquiry into the use of drones in counter-terrorist activities. She has also contributed to the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict initiative, which works to defend the rights of women in war zones, and in early 2015 she announced that she would represent Armenia in the European Court of Human Rights during its case against Turkey for the denial of the Armenian genocide.

Outside of court, Alamuddin has lectured on criminal law at such institutions as the University of London and the Hague Academy of International Law. She also serves as a visiting faculty member at Columbia Law School.

Marriage to George Clooney

Already a star in the legal world, Alamuddin stepped even more squarely into the limelight when she became involved with superstar actor and famous bachelor George Clooney. The couple married in Venice, Italy, in September 2014, and shortly thereafter moved to a multimillion-dollar estate built on a small island in the Thames in London. The politically minded power couple made their first of many philanthropic efforts together when they donated the money they received for their wedding photos to a human rights charity.

In February 2017, reports surfaced that Amal was pregnant and expecting twins. She gave birth to a girl and a boy — Ella and Alexander — on June 6, 2017, in a London hospital, the first children for both their mom and dad.

The family subsequently released a statement through George’s publicist, saying: “This morning we welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into our lives. Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine.” The statement also joked about the 56-year-old proud papa, who, prior to marrying Amal, was a well-known single guy: “George is sedated and should recover in a few days.”

In the wake of the tragic shooting at Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February 2018, the Clooneys threw their weight behind the March for Our Lives demonstration planned for the following month.

“Our family will be there on March 24 to stand side by side with this incredible generation of young people from all over the country, and in the name of our children Ella and Alexander, we’re donating $500,000 to help pay for this groundbreaking event,” said George in a statement.

Their announcement set off a domino effect in Hollywood, with other power players like Oprah Winfrey , Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg declaring that they would also donate $500,000 to the cause.

Amal Clooney Won’t Back Down

A mal Clooney doesn’t like talking about herself. Sit with the 44-year-old lawyer, and she’ll take you on a tour of some of the worst places in the world , where despots reign and standing up for your rights can get you killed. Yet, inevitably, she finds women in these places who want to challenge power, and she supercharges them with her own power: the law.

I know that because I’m one of them. Just for doing my job as a journalist , the authorities in the Philippines filed 10 arrest warrants against me in less than two years. Amal has helped defend me since 2019, and I’m a rarity for her because she can actually talk to me. In the past, her journalist clients were in prison, and she worked to free them by combining law with an incisive understanding of politics, pragmatism, and public advocacy.

What I’ve learned as one of her clients is that her empathy is as strong as her knowledge of the law and her courage. She’s also a hard worker, poring over thousands of pages of documents, highlighting, and taking meticulous notes. As she has often told me, you can’t do strategy if you don’t have the details. She knows my cases inside out, and many more too. When we spoke, she reeled off countless ones from memory: in Malawi, Darfur, Egypt, Myanmar , Azerbaijan, Tanzania, and more. She makes sure that women who are victims of mass atrocities, including genocide and sexual violence, are not forgotten, that they get justice, that their lives and communities are better as a result.

It’s sometimes hard to see all of Amal because of the glamour and celebrity that can overshadow her work. She embraces that and shines light on some of the darkest parts of the world to help her clients. She also quickly reminds you that she’s not just the wife of George but also the mother of adorable twins, Alexander and Ella. That has changed her. She told me, “With everything going on today, I want to have a good answer when they ask me what I was doing.” I’m glad she’s in my corner.

George and Amal Clooney Move to France: Inside Their $8.3 Million Estate Near Brad Pitt’s Home

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Amal Clooney had her hands full. Walking alongside husband George Clooney through the streets of Cotignac, a picturesque village in southeastern France, the human rights attorney bent down to pick up and carry her new puppy, Nelson, as the playful young Saint Bernard struggled with learning to walk on a leash. While exploring the little town with their furball, Amal and George also checked out an art exhibition and enjoyed a meal at Picotte restaurant.

But the couple weren’t on vacation. The village, it turns out, is just minutes away from the stunning estate the Clooneys now call home. “George and Amal are thrilled with their decision to relocate to France,” says a source, confirming that in recent months, the Lebanon-born British barrister, 46, and the Oscar-winning American actor-producer, 62, have settled in with their 6-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, at Domaine du Canadel, a sprawling 18th-century property in France’s Provence region that they purchased for a reported $8.3 million in 2021. “It’s a beautiful setting and completely private, which is what the Clooneys were looking for. It’s a fresh start for their family.”

That’s something Amal wanted. “She was quite adamant about the move and had been suggesting it for years,” says the source. “She felt their home on Lake Como [in Italy] was too exposed, and she didn’t want the children going to school in L.A. or England.” It helps that the kids were well prepared: In 2022, George proudly revealed that Alexander and Ella are fluent in Italian and French! Amal also speaks French.

Real Estate Empire

However, the Clooneys haven’t said au revoir to their other homes entirely. “They still have properties all over,” including their villa in Italy, George’s former bachelor pad in L.A., a NYC apartment, and an estate on the banks of the Thames River outside London. “But they’re making France their home base now.”

Their magnificent 25-room mansion on the shores of Italy’s Lake Como — where they met at a dinner party George hosted in the summer of 2013 — was their previous base on the European mainland. As an insider told In Touch in 2023, one of the drawbacks of living on Lake Como was how there wasn’t much of an extended community there, which meant that almost all of the Clooneys’ social life revolved around their home and hosting guests.

“In Provence, they have neighbors and friends they can interact with,” says the insider. “There’s much more of a community feeling.”

That doesn’t mean they won’t continue to welcome their Hollywood pals. In fact, says the source, the couple are looking forward to throwing dinner parties for A-list friends including Julia Roberts and Danny Moder , Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford, and Brad Pitt and girlfriend Ines de Ramon . Brad lives nearby, “so he’s given advice on the best little towns to visit and romantic restaurants to try on date nights, places where they can go ‘undercover’ and won’t be bothered, even if their famous pals tag along.”

All the Extras

Although they may never want to leave home. There’s a 25-acre vineyard, a pool, a tennis court, a boules pitch and lush gardens — perfect for their new puppy and the kids.

“George and Amal’s lifestyle has really changed since the move,” says the source, noting that the Clooneys spend more time outdoors now. And when they venture into nearby villages, “they’re able to walk around town virtually unnoticed. They feel safe there.” And blissfully happy. “While George was hesitant about the move at first — he’s always adored his home on Lake Como — he’s come to love France,” says the source, adding that George also has more time to spend there now that he’s once again decided to step away from Hollywood.

As he admitted a few years ago, after taking a break from acting from 2016 to 2020, the roles he’s presented with just aren’t getting him excited like they used to. Though he’s still producing and will return to the big screen at some point, right now he and Amal “like exploring new places and frequently visit different areas of the countryside. They’re really carving out an idyllic life together in France.”

Brad Pitt Is Their Neighbor

Location, location, location. The Clooneys’ property is just a half-hour drive from Château Miraval , the 1,200-acre estate and winery run by Brad Pitt, 60. (A-listers Bono , Elton John , the Beckhams and Johnny Depp are also in the vicinity.)

Brad’s passion for farming the land might be rubbing off on his old friend and frequent costar. According to an insider, “a wine business isn’t out of the question” for George, who in 2017 sold the Casamigos tequila brand he coowned with two pals for a reported billion dollars.

Amal Clooney Wore Controversial Boots to the Airport That'd Make TSA Squirm

Erin Fitzpatrick

When deciding what to wear to the airport , I always have two questions in mind. First: Is it easy to wear through the security check? Second: Is it easy to use the restroom in? Things like complicated footwear, jumpsuits, and too-tight skinny pants are some of the biggest offenders that don't pass the test, but  Amal Clooney is out here throwing caution to the wind and making me deeply reconsider.

Photographed at JFK Airport, Clooney wore formfitting, over-the-knee leather boots while traveling, and I simply can't imagine how cumbersome they'd be for TSA purposes. Plus, the  stiletto heels aren't exactly built for schlepping around the terminal. That said, she certainly looks as chic as ever, so can you blame her for wanting to photograph well? Scroll down to see her controversial airport shoes, and shop for more TSA-friendly boots.

The Obamas' Lake Como Weekend With George Clooney Didn't Quite Go As Planned

George Clooney and Barack Obama being serious

George Clooney and his wife Amal are used to hanging out with some pretty famous people. As a Hollywood icon, Clooney has made friends with his colleagues, and counts the likes of Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Robert DeNiro, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Don Cheadle, Jennifer Aniston, and Julia Roberts among his friends — all of whom have stayed with him at his famous summer house on Lake Como in Italy.

In addition to the entertainment crowd, Villa Oleandra, the name of Clooney's hideaway in the Italian town of Laglio, has hosted other famous faces, including Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Clooney has also hosted the American version of royalty, aka the former President and First Lady, Barack and Michelle Obama.

In June 2019, the Obamas and their two daughters, Sasha and Malia , made it on to the guest list when the couple were scheduled to attend a fundraiser for the Clooney Foundation for Justice in Italy. Clooney invited them to stay at his villa, and was ready and waiting for the Obamas. Just before their entourage arrived, though, the "Up in the Air" star made a discovery that set the staff into a last-minute scramble. It seems that when it comes to swimming pools, even the Clooneys aren't immune to plumbing issues.

The local plumber was asked to Hurry up!

Much has been heard and written about George Clooney's northern Italian summer house, Villa Oleandra (pictured above), located on the shore of Lake Como. Back when he was still a bachelor in 2002, he plunked down $7 million for the 18th century home, which he now shares with his wife Amal and their kids . Included on the estate along with the massive house and tennis courts is a swimming pool — the cause of Clooney's panic just before the Obamas were set to arrive.

Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera reported that Clooney became aware his swimming pool was half empty due to a problem with the drain. Even worse, what little water there was, bordered on freezing — definitely not how the pool of a major movie star entertaining the former president of the United States should be. The "Ocean's 11" actor had a local tradesman called in to fix the problem, plumber Dante Pennè. In an interview with Corriere Della Sera, as reported by The Daily Beast , Pennè revealed the situation was hectic when he got to the villa. "What a race. I arrive and they are all upset." Clooney's bodyguard was supervising, and asked him to "Hurry up! Hurry up!"

Luckily, Pennè was able to get the pool back in working condition before the Obamas arrived. Clooney rewarded the plumber with a selfie, and gratefully thanked him, admitting he was worried about his visiting friend, who didn't like cold water.

The Clooney and Obama Connection goes way back

The Obamas were photographed enjoying their time on Lake Como when they visited George Clooney and his family at the star's estate in Italy. Barack and Michelle were seen boating from here to there with George and Amal, enjoying the sunshine and the lake — with no signs of stress over a half-filled pool. One bystander, who observed the couples at a local restaurant, told  E! News , "George and Barack looked like best friends. ... They were laughing the entire time and taking pictures together."

It's not unusual to see the two men enjoying each other's company; they've been friends for years, having bonded at an event in 2006. Clooney supported Obama through his campaign for president in 2008. "I love that guy," he told The New Yorker . "I love him." Obama returned the sentiment. "George is a wonderful guy," he told Entertainment Tonight, as shared by Entertainment Weekly . "He is a good man, and a good friend."

The Italian trip wasn't the first time Clooney hosted Obama at one of his homes, either. In June 2017, the actor had the former president over to his estate in Sonning, England, where the two shared dinner, talk, and a game of basketball. No word on the condition of the plumbing.

George and Amal Clooney enjoy stroll through village near new hideaway home in France

I n the idyllic streets of Brignoles, a village nestled in the heart of Cote d’Azur, George and Amal Clooney  were recently seen enjoying a leisurely stroll, exuding contentment in their new French abode.

The pair, whose fortune is an impressive $570 million, have been savoring life in their grand 18th-century mansion, part of a sprawling 425-acre Provence wine estate they acquired for a reported $8.3 million in August 2021.

Their recent sighting in the village saw them arm-in-arm, dressed in the casual chic that has become their trademark: jeans paired with stylish jackets, epitomizing the effortless elegance that the couple is known for.

George, a charismatic presence, was later observed attentively filling up his classic Mercedes convertible at a local gas station, a mundane act that underscores the couple's seamless integration into the rhythms of provincial life.

Domaine Le Canadel, their majestic estate, is not just any property; it boasts a pool, tennis court, boules pitch, expansive gardens, an ornamental lake, an olive grove, and a flourishing 25-acre vineyard.

It's more than a residence; it's a sanctuary that encapsulates the beauty and rich heritage of Provence.

This new retreat lies a mere 25-minute drive from Chateau Miraval, the estate formerly co-owned by George's close friend and peer Brad Pitt and his ex-wife Angelina Jolie, whose recent divestment of her share to a Russian tycoon has sparked a legal scuffle over ownership.

George and Amal, whose nuptials in Venice six years prior captured the hearts of the world, have since expanded their residence portfolio to include a haven on Lake Como.

Alongside their six-year-old twins, Ella and Alexander, they've been residing in the tranquil serenity of Domaine Le Canadel, celebrating life's milestones, such as Amal's recent birthday, for which George surprised her with the gift of a Saint Bernard puppy, and organizing a romantic sojourn in the enchanting village of Cotignac.

Cotignac, with its troglodyte dwellings and historic fountains, provided the perfect backdrop for the couple's escape.

Their day included a cultural interlude at an art exhibition and a gastronomic delight at the Picotte restaurant, renowned for its culinary prowess in local cuisine, prepared with fresh, regional produce.

Rumors had swirled about George possibly parting with his famed Villa Oleandra on Lake Como, a notion he has firmly quashed, affirming his attachment to the estate that has hosted a constellation of stars, from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to Jennifer Aniston and Matt Damon.

The estate, a frequent setting for star-studded gatherings and even film shoots such as Ocean's 12, offers an array of luxurious amenities, including 25 rooms, tennis courts, a gym, a garage filled with vintage motorcycles, a cinema room, a pool, a basketball court, and not one but two docks on Lake Como. "

Not true," George stated unequivocally regarding the sale reports, signaling his deep-seated affinity for the place that has become an integral part of his family's life.

George Clooney reveals 'very emotional' moment he and Amal decided to become parents

amal clooney travel

George Clooney is opening up about the "very emotional" moment he and his wife, human rights attorney  Amal Clooney , decided to become parents.

The actor, 60, recalled the intimate decision during Monday's episode of the  "WTF with Marc Maron" podcast, telling host Maron that he used to never wanted to walk down the aisle again, let alone have children.

That all changed, however, when Amal, 43, came into his life.

"Listen, I didn't want to get married," Clooney said. "I didn't want to have kids, and then this extraordinary human being walked into my life, and I fell madly in love, and I knew from the minute I met her that everything was going to be different."

According to Clooney, he and Amal had been married for a year when they decided on a walk outside a friend's house that they wanted to have children.

"They had a kid there (at the house), which was loud and obnoxious, and I was like, 'Oh (expletive),' and we went outside for a walk," Clooney said. "(Amal) said, 'So, we're awfully lucky in life,' and I said, 'Yeah, we are, and we're lucky we found each other.'... And she said, 'It seems like that luck should be shared with some other folks.' "

Clooney said a minute of silence followed.

"I don't think either of us had made a decision," he continued. "And then I just said, 'Well, I mean, if you're in,' and she said, 'I think we should try.' I have to say, it was very emotional, because I really was convinced that wasn't my lot in life and was comfortable with that."

Clooney also recalled finding out they were expecting twins, describing the moment their doctor showed him Amal's sonogram.

"I'm like, 'Baby boy, fantastic.' And then they said, 'And the other one is a girl.' And I was like, 'Oh (expletive),' " he said. "I was gobsmacked, because I was kind of up for one."

Though Clooney expected to have only one kid, he said he loves being a dad of two. He and Amal welcomed twins Alexander and Ella in 2017.

"And thank God they have each other," he said. "During the pandemic they were together."

George Clooney proposed to Amal 'out of the blue,' recalls shock of learning they were having twins

Clooney and Amal wed in Venice in 2014. In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning in November 2020, Clooney recalled his proposal to the lawyer and how Amal took her time in deciding whether or not to accept.

"We never talked about marriage when we were dating, and I asked her out of the blue," the actor said. "Took her a long time to say yes. I was on my knee for, like, 20 minutes. I finally said, 'Look I'm going to throw my hip out.' "

But Clooney added there is "no question that having Amal in my life changed everything for me."

"No question about it," he continued. "It was the first time that everything that she did and everything about her was infinitely more important than anything about me."

Amal Clooney Sparkles in Silver During Date Night with Husband George Clooney on Lake Como

The pair were also photographed sharing some PDA on another date night last week at Lake Como's Grand Hotel Tremezzo

SplashNews.com

Amal Clooney shone bright for a date night in Italy.

The British barrister rocked a silvery look as she and husband George Clooney exited the Gatto Nero eatery on Lake Como Thursday evening, appearing to be in high spirits.

Amal, 45, was captured on camera in a sequined silver dress with a sweetheart neckline as she walked down the steps from the restaurant into their awaiting car, also wearing a bright smile.

She accessorized the glam ensemble with large diamond dangling earrings, and wore her hair in waves over her shoulder. Her wedding band could be seen shining on her left hand as she was snapped pushing some of her hair away from her face.

Meanwhile George, 62, could be seen in a dark-gray suit over a navy shirt as he appeared to talk to someone briefly outside before joining his wife in the car.

This isn’t the first time the pair have been spotted out this month on a romantic date along the Italian coastal destination, where they own a villa. Last week, they were photographed sharing another romantic dinner and a smooch on the balcony of the Grand Hotel Tremezzo.

Amal wore a long white V-neck dress with a slit showing off her toned legs, with matching nude heels and a white-and-gold clutch, as she held her husband’s hand while walking down the stairs from the balcony. George contrasted his wife in a dark suit with a black undershirt and shiny loafers.

Prior to their Italian getaway, the Oscar winner reiterated his support of his fellow actors amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike .

"This is an inflection point in our industry," George said in a statement to Entertainment Tonight . "Actors and writers in large numbers have lost their ability to make a living. For our industry to survive that has to change. For actors that journey starts now."

The Clooneys first met in 2013 through a mutual friend’s introduction and would go on to tie the knot a year later in Sicily. The couple later welcomed twins Alexander and Ella , now 6, at St. Mary's Hospital in London.

In March 2022, Amal opened up about her relationship with George , whom she called "inspirational and supportive," in her TIME's Women of the Year profile.

"Marriage has been wonderful," raved the human-rights attorney, adding, "We have a home filled with love and laughter."

"It is a joy beyond anything I could ever have imagined,” Amal added. “I feel so lucky to have found a great love in my life, and to be a mother — this is how I get my balance."

George took a more casual approach to his outfit. Photos published by the Daily Mail show the actor and Boys in the Boat director wearing a black windbreaker, a navy blue T-shirt, faded blue jeans, and creamy suede dress shoes.

This week’s outing is far from the first time that Clooney has taken sartorial inspiration from previous decades. For instance, on a date night with George in December, she channeled flapper-girl energy by way of a bubblegum-pink feathered minidress . She layered the romantic look underneath a shiny black blazer, and finished it off with metallic bronze pointed-toe pumps, a small textured black leather clutch, and a pair of diamond-encrusted red gemstone drop earrings.

George and Amal Clooney's living room is so palatial in rare glimpse of their home

The human rights lawyer recently announced the amal clooney scholarship  .

Amal Clooney and George Clooney attend the World Premiere of "Ticket to Paradise" at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square on September 07, 2022 in London

With George Clooney being one of the most well-known faces in Hollywood and Amal being an impressive human rights barrister, the Clooneys are the ultimate power couple. It's fitting, therefore, that they have the property portfolio to match.

The couple rarely share glimpses inside their private life or their homes, but fans of the A-list husband and wife were treated to a view inside one of their living rooms, and it looked, unsurprisingly, palatial.

Amal was featured in the University of Law's (ULaw) video to launch her scholarship with the institution and the Clooney Foundation for Justice and in the background we got a view of the lounge.

Amal Clooney appeared in a video the ULaw Scholarship announcement

It's not clear which home Amal was filming in for the video snippet, which was posted on ULaw's official YouTube channel, but the stunning tiled floor and regal, Mediterranean décor have us convinced it is one of their stunning homes on the European continent.

The Clooneys are owners of a gorgeous home on Lake Como in northern Italy, valued at around £80 million. The villa in Lombardy has become something of an attraction in the gorgeous Italian hotspot.

Como is also a favourite among celebrities as a holiday and wedding destination.

Don't miss

But George and Amal are also fortunate to own an estate in the south of France . The husband and wife, who married in 2014, currently reside at Domaine Le Canadel, located on the 425-acre wine estate in Provence. They bought the property back in 2021 for a reported £8.3 million.

The room in question was filled with gorgeous elements. The walls were lined with a regal gold and blue print, while the sofas were adorned with a similar pattern, with matching scattered cushions for added comfort and style.

To the right of the seating area sits a side table topped with a stunning gold lamp, adding a dose of elegance to the room.

72nd ANNUAL GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS -- Amal Clooney and honoree George Clooney at the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 11, 2015.

The patterned doors brought a touch of royalty, complementing the whole room beautifully, which wouldn't look out of place at Versailles.

George and Amal also have a home in Los Angeles and in the British countryside but, due to the UK's wet weather and subsequent floods, the parents of two decided to flee England for France at the beginning of the year.

Towards the end of February, the pair, who share six-year-old twins Ella and Alexander, were spotted out walking together in Provence close to their home, proving they were soaking up the glorious weather and privacy that the south of France offers them. Their French estate also boasts a pool, tennis court, huge gardens, a lake and a 25-acre vineyard.

Meanwhile, Amal's video for ULaw was a huge achievement for her career and her passion for advocating for human rights.

Explaining the purpose of the new initiative in the video, Amal said: "This scholarship provides a fully funded place at the University of Law, the largest provider of legal education in the United Kingdom.

"The recipient will have the opportunity to choose from a range of postgraduate law programs at any of the campuses across the United Kingdom or across the world to prepare for a career in human rights."

She finished by stating: "I am so proud that this will support the lawyers of the future who are passionate about helping others who refuse to accept the status quo and who are determined to be agents of change."

Amal Clooney’s 2023 Wardrobe Was Filled With Versace—and Vintage!

By Christian Allaire

Amal Clooneys Best Fashion Moments of 2023

Among the red carpet stars that shined this year, Amal Clooney certainly held her own. Whether she was giving talks at global conferences or supporting her husband George Clooney at Hollywood premieres, the human rights lawyer cultivated a unique style that played up all of her fashion signatures. Her 2023 wardrobe was filled with loads of Versace—one of her most-worn labels—and one-of-a-kind vintage gems, too. In honor of her stellar year, Vogue is taking a look at some of Clooney’s very best fashion sightings.

Clooney is a well-noted lover of vintage, so it’s no surprise that the barrister sourced a few archival gowns to wear this year. At the DVF Awards in Venice this August, for one, Clooney stepped out in a blush lace slip with tulle overlay from John Galliano’s fall 2000 collection for Dior. It’s not the first time Clooney has opted for a Galliano creation: She loves his classic slips . Her dedication to pulling old garments from the vaults, and making them feel new, makes for a fresh approach to red carpet dressing—proving that a classic design will never go out of style.

This year, Clooney also opted for loads of Versace; She and designer Donatella Versace have a long-standing relationship, after all. At the Albie Awards in September, she donned a white Versace gown with a sweeping train. “I actually had taken a sample from a simple beach dress that I have, and we worked from there,” Clooney told  Vogue of the sleek design. At the 2023 Fashion Awards in London last month, she also dazzled in a golden Versace gown covered in sequins. Just like her approach to dressing overall this year, she clearly was going for gold.

Below, more of Clooney’s best fashion moments of 2023.

British Ted Baker worn by celebs including Amal Clooney and Holly Willoughby prepares to appoint administrators, risking hundreds of jobs

George Clooney and Amal Clooney leave the Polo Bar on December 14, 2023 in New York City.

Ted Baker is preparing to place its network of stores across the UK into insolvency, putting hundreds of jobs at risk.

The fashion chain has filed a notice of intention to appoint insolvency administrators to No Ordinary Designer Label, the part of the business that runs its shops. Advisory firm Teneo is being lined up to handle the process.

Ted Baker’s brand and intellectual property is owned by Authentic Brands Group Inc., the US company which is also behind brands such as Reebok. The UK retailer employs almost 1,000 people and has more than 40 stores across the country, alongside a website and department store concessions.

Authentic Brands said Ted Baker will continue to operate as normal during the administration. “We remain focused on securing a new partner to uphold and grow the Ted Baker brand in the UK and Europe where it began,” it said in an email.

Authentic Brands bought Ted Baker in 2022 in a £211 million ($268 million) deal following a series of profit warnings. It then appointed Dutch company AARC to run the shops.

However, Authentic said problems arose under AARC — whose relationship is now terminated — as significant arrears were allowed to build up. “We wish there could have been a better outcome for the Ted Baker employees and stakeholders,” Authentic said in a statement.

News of the administration is the latest blow for Ted Baker which has been struggling to revive its fortunes since it was engulfed in a scandal in 2019 when founder Ray Kelvin departed after being accused of inappropriate hugs and other behavior in the workplace. Kelvin denied any wrongdoing.

Ted Baker is not the only UK retailer to suffer from an intensely competitive marketplace. Earlier this year the Body Shop’s UK business, which had about 200 stores, went into administration. The Wilko chain of shops, which had about 400 stores, fell into insolvency last summer. Paperchase, Cath Kidston and M&Co were among other brands that went into administration in the past two years.

Often in insolvency processes not all stores end up closing and some branches can be taken over by rival retailers.

Irina Shayk Basically Stole Amal Clooney’s Seasonless Boots

She displayed transitional dressing to a T.

Spring fashion is known for pastel colors , white tennis shoes , denim skirts , and slip dresses ; it matches the surrounding nature such as fluffy clouds, bright florals, and clear blue skies. But, Irina Shayk shook things up by defying all seasonal norms — and I’m so here for it.

Carrying her dog around NYC (who wouldn’t?), Shayk wore a blacked-out ensemble including a draped waffle-knit duster , sexy knee-high boots , slim ‘90s shades, and large hoop earrings. Such a covered ensemble wasn’t on my spring bingo card, however, upon analysis, it’s actually quite fitting for the season.

Easyfox Knee-High Stiletto Boot

Bella vita corrine knee-high boot.

The long cardigan is an ideal transitional top layer that beats ever-changing weather, including unexpected, chilly winds and rainy days. You can also forgo heavier winter wear since it keeps you cozy without becoming overly hot. Best of all, it looks ultra comfortable, and who doesn’t like that?

While we often see knee-high boots during the fall and winter months, I’d actually go so far as to call Shayk’s shoes seasonless . That can seem perplexing at first, but just look at Amal Clooney for proof ; earlier this month, she wore an even taller version of the footwear for a night out. Clooney demonstrated that the dominatrix-style can be worn as a year-round, bold statement, while more celebrities like Elsa Hosk , Emily Ratajkowski , Alicia Keys , and Vanessa Hudgens are also on board with the contradictory style trend.

Knee-high boots are surprisingly easy to style with spring separates, too. I like to wear my own version of leather footwear — similar to these on-sale $65 boots — with a side-slit dress to let the shoes shine. You can also pair them with cut-off midi shorts and an oversized button-up if you’re feeling adventurous, while maxi skirts and boots are always a good idea.

Give transitional dressing a shot by tapping Shayk’s season-defying style, and shop versions of her knee-high boots, below.
