AMON AMARTH continues to tour in support of their critically adored The Great Heathen Army full-length. Recorded with esteemed studio guru Andy Sneap and released in 2022, the record represents another bold leap forward for the band, as their trademark sound undergoes yet another skillful, evolutionary overhaul, both lyrically and musically. From the noisily rabble-rousing “Find A Way Or Make One” and the pummeling, pugilistic “Get In The Ring” to the cinematic squall of the title track, The Great Heathen Army encapsulates the essence of this legendary band, while still allowing acres of space for new ideas.
Wrote Louder Sound of the offering, “ The Great Heathen Army is simultaneously everything that helped AMON AMARTH climb to the top in the first place and a return to the darker, less showy sound of their early days… the band’s innate sense for fist-pumping riffs and colossal hooks remains impossible to deny.” Concurred Blabbermouth, “Both an unapologetic, festival-ready dose of new, gleaming, Viking-populated anthems, and one of the darkest and most brutal albums they have yet made, The Great Heathen Army feels celebratory, too — an extravagant blowout to mark the start of the next invasion.”
Fans can check out a teaser for the upcoming video “Saxons and Vikings” HERE and can preview and purchase The Great Heathen Army at: metalblade.com/amonamarth .
Formed in Tumba, Sweden, in 1992, AMON AMARTH has forged an extraordinary legacy over three decades of thunderous, anthemic metal, all rich in the magical imagery of Viking history, folklore and culture. With albums like 2008’s widely acclaimed Twilight Of The Thunder God and 2016’s conceptual triumph Jomsviking , the Swedes have been consistent standard bearers for heavy metal as a life-affirming and communal experience, armed with a seemingly endless stream of instant classic songs.

Often considered one of grindcore's founding fathers, Carcass were among the first bands of the extreme metal genre to try a different lyrical approach -- one that reflected a fascination with surgical gadgets and peculiar words straight out of a med student's textbook.Hailing from the same locale that spawned the Fab Four -- in case you've lived under a rock for the past few decades, Liverpool -- Carcass were originally formed in 1985 by singer/guitarist Bill Steer (who would later play with Napalm Death) and drummer Ken Owen. By 1987, singer/bassist Jeff Walker had signed on with the band, resulting in a deal with Earache Records shortly after. The trio then issued a pair of full-lengths that are often considered classics of the grindcore genre, 1988's Reek of Putrefaction and 1989's Symphonies of Sickness. Shortly after the dawn of the '90s, Carcass expanded to a quartet, as Michael Amott signed on as second guitarist, resulting in two more favorites of the metal underground, 1991's Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious and 1992's four-song EP Tools of the Trade. Whereas he once sang in a growling voice à la a dragon desperately in need of some Pepto-Bismol, Walker adopted a slightly more traditional metal singing style, while the band was no longer afraid to let Iron Maiden-esque guitar work enter the mix. The result was the group's major-label debut for Sony, 1994's Heartwork. Although Heartwork is probably Carcass' best-known album, fan reaction is often split evenly between those who feel the group had sold out with a more easily digestible sound (quite comparable to thrash metal) and those who feel that it's one of the '90s great metal releases. Either way, Amott left the group around this time, and was replaced by Carlo Regadas for Carcass' final studio album, 1996's appropriately titled Swansong. The same year, a compilation of rarities was issued, Wake Up and Smell the Carcass. Subsequently, Owen, Walker, and Regadas continued working together for a spell under the Blackstar name; Amott formed both Spiritual Beggars and Arch Enemy; and Steer surprisingly formed a blues-rock power trio, Firebird. The band re-formed in 2007 as a live act, with Walker, Steer, and Amott tapping Arch Enemy drummer Daniel Erlandsson to man the kit, though there was no talk of heading back into the studio. Amott and Erlandsson left in 2012 to focus on Arch Enemy, and Steer and Walker, along with drummer Dan Wilding, surprised everyone with the announcement of a new album. The resulting Surgical Steel, which was released independently, arrived in September 2013. ~ Greg Prato

Cattle Decapitation
Though many bands have tried, no one articulates the real apocalypse humanity is facing as vividly and succinctly as Cattle Decapitation. With 2019’s Death Atlas they reached the apex of this, perhaps leading some to believe they had no place left to go beyond such an achievement, but now they return with Terrasite, which is as bold a statement as they have ever made. “After a record like Death Atlas you have to make a turn,” states guitarist Josh Elmore. “Everything about that album - the concept, artwork, music, etc, was a final statement. The only way to move forward is rebirth. In approaching the newest record it was not only necessary to keep the musical trajectory the band has been aiming towards since the beginning, but also to further explore the ambient/textural elements that were part of Death Atlas.” As such, Terrasite pushes their sound further into more epic and varied territory, and in the hands of vocalist Travis Ryan the governing concept takes a new and disturbing direction. “I wanted to do the 180° opposite of Death Atlas. I already had the concept idea from years back and since Death Atlas was so dark and brooding, I wanted a completely opposite effect - I wanted this to take place in the daylight. I’ve always found daytime horror to be really unsettling so I wanted to make sure what was going on on the cover took place in the light of day, which also finds its place within the lyrics.”
Written both separately and during sessions together in San Diego - which required certain members to regularly fly into the city - the record came together naturally, though not without personal struggle. Every member of their current lineup - Elmore, Ryan, guitarist Belisario Dimuzio, bassist Olivier Pinard and drummer David McGraw - has grown to fill their musical niche in the band, and learned how to get the best out of each other, making for their most accomplished work to date. Roaring to life with the savage yet hauntingly melodic “Terrasitic Adaptation” and advancing through the likes of the relentless “We Eat Our Young” and culminating with the ten-plus minutes of “Just Another Body”, it is an album that constantly shifts dynamics, and demands a variety of emotional responses. “All the Cattle hallmarks are there; ripping blasts, abrasive and aggressive guitar/bass riffs and Travis’s varied vocal approach; but this record just feels different. I don’t know how else to put it. There is a deep richness to the guitar tones and a more prominent bass guitar presence, the drums parts are assaultive, but tasteful and Travis’ vocals are as varied as they’ve ever been but with an added emotional depth. The whole record sounds like a somber panic attack; like mourning the loss of a loved one at Mach 3,” says Elmore. “The trademark Cattle intensity is always there, but this time at paces that range from frantic to controlled and driving but with more focus on menacing heaviness. The ambient and effect-laden guitar presence also takes up a much larger part of the whole experience.”
The title is a word invented by Ryan that brings together ‘Terra-’ meaning earth and ‘-site’ derived from the Greek word ‘-sitos’ which means ‘food’. “The combination of the two meaning ‘earth-eater’, as a metaphor for humanity’s role in the destruction of the planet, and is a play-on-words of the very fitting word ‘parasite’.” This is vividly brought to life in the artwork by longtime collaborator Wes Benscoter. “We see the nymph stage of this human/cockroach hybrid that is more of a fully grown being that has just molted from its ootheca stage, startled, confused, frightened but also pissed off and ready to join the rest of its brood in finishing humanity’s job of destroying the Earth.” When asked where he is coming from lyrically on this record, Ryan frankly states “from a place of distress. Anger, rage, resentment, depression, anxiety, a poor outlook on our species both on a day-to-day level, a broader, worldly level as well as a philosophical level.” For example, the lyrics of “A Photic Doom” “are more of just a metaphor for being alone in your head and turning away from the life that is exposed by the light of day. Shaking your fist at the sun for exposing this place to us. For uncovering the depravity of our species and casting light onto subjects rather than letting them rest in the darkness”. Then there is “Scourge Of The Offspring” which “makes up the bulk of the album’s concept that the first song “Terrasitic Adaptation” and the cover art sort of set into motion. In the first song we find out what's going on on the cover, and this song deals more with what our children will end up being - adult humans, shat out and left to make sense of this world only to end up being part of the problem simply by existing.”
The band once again worked with producer Dave Otero (Cephalic Carnage, Allegaeon), who knows the members’ individual styles and how to coax the best out of them, bringing in Tony Parker of Midnight Odyssey to handle piano and synths. Just prior to joining his bandmates, and with some lyrics yet to be written, Ryan received some tragic news, with friend and Cattle Decapitation co-founder Gabe Serbian taking his own life. “The news and all the pressure going into the album spun my head completely around and out of control. While not being able to properly grieve the loss of Gabe - a friend who meant so much to us and was attached to an incredibly large network of friends that begins locally and stretches across the globe, my mind went into an incredibly dark place and then within a couple weeks of being there we learned that our friend Trevor Strnad (The Black Dahlia Murder) had taken his life as well. It just felt like things were unraveling for so many of our friends whom we consider family, having lost a couple friends after two years of everyone trying to get through the pandemic and navigate through this to come out on the other end with everything still together.” All of this informed the lyrics to the epic closer “Just Another Body”, Ryan stating “all these months later, after many listens, it still has a shroud around it that will never disappear. It was written during some of the hardest moments in this band’s career.”
With the record finally realized, and dedicated to Serbian’s memory, the band are looking ahead to touring, promising sets rich with Terrasite songs as well as some tracks people have not heard live in years. They are also understandably proud to still be going strong after two and a half decades, and to have stayed relevant. “We are one of the few bands that have never rested on our laurels and keep pushing ourselves to improve. At this stage of our careers we could easily be trying to rewrite Monolith Of Inhumanity (2012) over and over, but since we did not and have never settled that way, the end results were The Anthropocene Extinction (2015), Death Atlas (2019) and now Terrasite, which have pushed us further into more mature and experimental territory,” says Elmore. “I just feel with the way things change so drastically nowadays, especially the last three or four years, that it’s surprising an extreme metal band can not only be around for so damn long but still stay anchored in this constantly changing scene that’s dictated where it’s going to go by younger generations - and still maintain relevance,” adds Ryan. “Our band truly is an anomaly. I’d prefer to keep it that way.”

Amon Amarth have announced a Fall 2022 North American tour in support of their upcoming album The Great Heathen Army , arriving August 5th.
The package for the “Great Heathen Army Tour” is absolutely stacked, with fellow death metal luminaries Carcass , Obituary , and Cattle Decapitation rounding out the bill.
The outing kicks off on November 11th in Las Vegas and culminates with a show on December 17th in Los Angeles. General tickets sales begin Friday, July 15th, at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster , with pre-sales starting as early as Tuesday, July 12th, at 11 a.m. local time. “North America, the Great Heathen Army is coming for you this fall!” Amon Amarth stated in a press release. “We have been away for a long time and now we return to raid with the death metal event of the year! We will be sacking cities across the continent with our good friends Carcass, Obituary, and Cattle Decapitation. We intend to bring a big show and give you a night that you won’t easily forget. Miss this at your own peril.”
Notably, the tour will be Carcass’ first extensive US tour in six years following a short two-week run earlier this year.
“Can It really be that long???” remarked the band’s Jeff Walker. “We can’t think of a stronger tour or killer line up for us to be part of … it’s gonna be a RAGER!”

Amon Amarth is a Swedish based death metal act from the city Tumba. The group plays a blend of black metal that emphasizes melody and captures themes of mythology and Viking history. The group’s core line up consists Johan Hegg, Ted Lundström, Olavi Mikkonen, Johan Söderberg, and Fredrik Andersson.
Stemming from the demise of the grindcore band Scum, Amon Amarth formed in 1992, adopting their name from a reference to J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional setting, Middle-earth. Amon Amarth abandoned the hardcore punk sound of Scum, dropping their previous spastic tendencies and experimenting with dark dream like soundscapes driven by the traditional brooding structure of contemporaries like In Flames,Six Feet Under, and At the Gates.
Amon Amarth put out their first demo “Thor Arise” in 1993 following shortly after the release of Scum’s 1991 demo and their subsequent reformulation. “Thor Arise” was very rough and disjointed; nevertheless, it showed great potential and stimulated a strong cult following in certain metal subsects.
Just a year later the band put out their second demo “Arrival of the Fimbul Winter”. This recording saw a limited run of 1000 copies. The band signed on to Pulverised Records and released their first EP “Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds” in 1996. Their studio debut LP “Once Sent from the Golden Hall” followed 2 years later and was released through the label Metal Blade. This album was herald among critics and was essential in exposing the band to an international audience. After this release they were making stops in Canada, the US, and various festivals in addition to their standard rounds at local venues.
The band experienced several lineup changes in 1998, with Johan Soderberg replacing Anders Hansson and Martin Lopez going on to join Opeth. Once the band settled into their new formation they recorded and released their sophomore effort “The Avenger”. The group returned to the studios to create their most aggressive album to date, aptly titled “The Crusher”, which saw a release in mid 2001.The band scheduled an extensive tour in tandem with this release, but had to push back their US wing of the tour until 2002. By this time they issued their 4th album “Versus the World”. This album was considered to be the group’s most somber and emotionally dark album. It also won widespread critical praise, ranking number 413 in Rock Hard magazine’s book of “The 500 Greatest Rock Metal Albums of All Time”.
The band started a trend of releasing an album every 2 years. They succeeded their 2004 Spring tour with the release of “Fate of Norns” and in 2006 came out with their critical and commercially viable album “With Oden on Our Side”. The group returned to the studios to record “Twilight of the Thunder Gods” after the completion of their first ever Australian and New Zealand tour.
“Twilight of the Thunder Gods” featured members of Entombed, Children of Bodom, and Apocalyptica as well as an 8 page accompanying comic strip. Much of the group’ status within the metal community as well as in popular music can be attributed to this album. It rose to No. 50 on the US charts, No. 6 in Germany, No. 10 in Finland, and No.11 in their homeland.
Their next album “Surtur Rising” came out 3 years later and acted as a platform for a 4 month world tour alongside Ensiferum and Children of Bodom. The group’s 9th studio album “Deceiver of the Gods” came out in 2013 and did reasonably well on the charts in Canada and drew comparisons to the works of Thin Lizzy and Judas Priest.
Live reviews
The concert was epic. I wasn't too familiar with Skeletonwitch but they didn't disappoint. Beyond the Permafrost were awesome. They now have a new fan. Next was Sabaton. Chuck Liddell (Lead Singer Joakim) owned it. I'm a huge fan of the band and their stories of epic battles throughout history. To Hell and Back was my favorite song of the night. One of the people I met never heard Sabaton before and was a fan before the end of the set. One of the best parts of the show was at the end. Joakim brought a 6 year old named Steven on stage and gave him his trademark mirrored aviator sunglasses. He then let him stay on stage and rock out with the band. It was Stevens first metal concert. Mad respect for that. The venue was amazing. The Riverside Municipal Auditorium is one of the coolest venues I've been in. The sound is amazing and I will definitely be attending concerts there again.
And finally the Almighty AMON AMARTH. Nothing else can be said except they blew the walls down. Johan is the definition of the great front man. He had the crowd in his hands from the moment he hit the stage. 90 minutes of pure balls out Viking Death Metal. Can't wait to see these bands again.

Amon Amarth is an amazing Norse viking metal band who touts it all the time. They sport the look, dress the stage to feel like you are at or watching a Norse Viking Ship.
Last concert I went to Amon Amarth had the stage filled up with a wooden dragon ship which the drummer played on and was high above everyone while singers and guitarist were on mini dragon viking ships where they could get on and off and run around the stage.
The growling they do is clear and percise, the guitars and riffs are fantastic with the power drums they sport. They get the crowd amped with the music, solos, drum solos and shouting between songs. They talk the crowd up and talk about Norse lore while waiting. They bring a great show and people love it, once in the while the get the crowd to mosh, but it is not really their thing.
It was only a 45min set, going on after Cannibal Corpse, but before Lamb of God and Slayer. It was more of a "modern hits era" setlist but with only 45min to work with, I think that was a great idea to build fans. They're headlining their tour this fall so they'll get to max out in the States soon enough. I don't think the new cd has anything as grand in feel as The Way of Vikings but I really can't wait to hear more of the new material this fall. Raven's Flight and Crack the Sky were known going into the show but everyone else should have a chance at the full cd since this was the only performance before the official release of Berserker. Fafner's Gold, Shield Wall, and Mjolnir, Hammer of Thor will be welcome additions when they have time to do them.
I'll raise my horn to Amon Amarth !!!
It was amazing!!
Thanks to Songkick I have had one of the greatest experiences in my life.
The performance as well as the special effects were just spectacular.
Moreover, you could clearly see how the band really enjoys putting up a concert and be one with the fans. Not going to lie, I remained from start to finish with a gigantic smile on my face and jumping all around for the fact that having had the opportunity to go to Barcelona to listen to such great band had me so hyped I even tear up. I felt the powerfulness of their music right on my chest, they left me completely speachless!
I really hope to see Amon Amarth on live concert again. <3
The show was INCREDIBLE! The venue looked a little outdated on the outside, but once you were inside, the venue venue had venue had so much space! This was my second time seeing Amon Amarth, and it certainly isn't my last! The band did great, and Goatwhore, the opening band, was also incredible. Venue was very well organized and their merch table was conveniently placed with plenty of room to access. Only thing that bummed me out a little about the venue was that I had to take off some of my apparel that I've been able to wear to every other venue I've been to, but I guess every place has their own differences. Still an amazing show!
Of the hundreds of concerts I've been to, Amon Amarth is one of the top five I've ever seen. They were absolutely phenomenal. The energy was amazing, the set list was great, the crowd was awesome, the opening acts (who I wasn't very familiar with) were awesome. The entire show was just unforgettable. It was my first time at the House of Blues Cleveland and I loved the place. They have one of the very best sound systems I've heard. I'm from Columbus and I'll definitely be returning to the venue as soon as possible.
One of the best gigs I have ever been to. Everything is perfect. The bands who played along with Amon Amarth were absolutely stunning. I would like to point out a few points which disappointed me a bit. Skeletonwithc's vocal was not there, so all they played were instrumental, which were pretty good too. And Amon Amarth did not have their Viking Ship on the stage which they were having in other concerts in this tour. This is really frustrating. Except these, everything was great. I had a good time.
Saw these guys (4/26/2016) In a tiny venue in Rochester with mediocre sound... that being said, one of the best and most fun shows Ive been to in a very long time... Amon Amarth seemed like they enjoyed the croup and were happy to be there. Even with such a small venue they sounded great and played a nice mix of songs from their various albums.
I wish the would have chosen to play in Niagara Falls, I think that would have been a much better venue and would have surpassed this show.
Awesome show. Sound was great, stage presence was great. Without the stage gimmicks it would have been perfectly good but their stage show was a lot of fun too.
I did not see the opener but I did see all of Entombed A.D. set and it was solid as well (I had listened to their albums though so I knew the songs).
We had a friend who was not a metal fan and even he had a good time, its a good show for veterans and newcomers both.

Amon Amarth are set to release their brand new studio album The Great Heathen Army on August 5 via Metal Blade.
“Overall The Great Heathen Army is one of the heavier albums we’ve made,” said vocalist John Hegg. “There are some dark and heavy songs that are really powerful and in-your-face, but we obviously have some trademark melodic Amon Amarth songs on there as well, and a few surprises too. It’s a really well-balanced album. It sounds great. [Producer] Andy Sneap is awesome. It was great to be able to work with him again.“

AMON AMARTH, CANNIBAL CORPSE, OBITUARY announce 2024 tour
The death-metal tour of 2024 has been announced. Viking-metal mainstays Amon Amarth will be headlining a North American trek next year with support from OSDM champs Cannibal Corpse and Obituary , as well as the new-school genre leaders Frozen Soul.
Dubbed the "Metal Crushes All Tour," the journey begins April 21st in Albuquerque and will hit both coasts of the U.S. — and several dates up in Canada — before concluding May 25th in Anaheim.
Notably, several of these shows are going down in actual arena venues, and Amon Amarth are billing Metal Crushes All as their biggest North American tour to date.
