So for 17-year-old Jessica Warren, embarking on the University of the Sunshine Coast's (UniSC) Best Field Trip in the World was the trip of a lifetime.

"It's going to be very different, and an insight into actual uni, because going from a small town to university is a really big step," she said.

"Especially one in a popular city like that. So it should be interesting, and it's just going to be a lot of fun."

For four days, Jessica swapped her family cattle stud in Booyal, 60 kilometres south-west of Bundaberg with a population of around 300 people, for the surf at the Sunshine Coast.

The Isis District State High School experienced a night on K'gari (Fraser Island), conservation education at Australia Zoo, learning about coastal erosion at Noosa beach, and a live NRL game — which the Broncos super fan was most excited about.

She said she hoped to be an example for other young people in rural areas.

"[It] will definitely help me choose my career options and where I want to go," Jessica said.

Cattle farmer's daughter

Growing up rural can be other-worldly to people who have not lived it, and Jessica is sure the city life is not for her.

"Oh definitely not. Country always," she said. 

"You don't get to go drive your quad down the paddock every morning, or anything like that, in the city."

Raised on a cattle property and a member of her school's cattle team, her ingrained love for the industry has sparked her career aspirations.

While university is on the cards for Jessica, she will unquestionably follow in her family's footsteps.

"I'm looking to head into a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in accounting because I love accounting, so definitely a career, and long-term going to own a cattle property somewhere and own my own accounting firm, hopefully," she said.

The future of agriculture

Integrating sustainable practices into the cattle industry is a passion of Jessica's, and she said she wants to learn more about sustainable farming because it "really shows what the future is going to be like".

While the 17-year-old was not yet sure where she wanted to lay down her patch of land, one thing was for certain — it would be in rural Queensland.

Jessica is one of five winners of the 1,600 applicants from across Queensland who were immersed in regional innovation through the UniSC program, and to get a taste of university life.

"It's a real-life UniSC student experience because our students get to complete work-integrated learning as part of almost every degree we offer," said UniSC Pro Vice-Chancellor Alex Elibank Murray.

As part of the trip, the students engaged with Professor Peter Timms, who is working on chlamydia vaccines for koalas, and Dr Javier Leon, who researches how drones can influence understandings of beach changes.

Aquariums are a field trip staple for teachers and that is because kids love them. The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas is no exception. The nearly 500,000-gallon water tank is filled with crowd-pleasing favorites like turtles and large sharks and the Mississippi River exhibit is always a hit thanks to its collection of authentic Cajun creatures like catfish and a white alligator. It does cost money to get in, but there are special packages for groups and field trips that make the experience more cost-effective.

The MoMA may be a bit too "high-brow" for younger students, but middle school and high school students with an affinity for art will love this museum for its eclectic mix of artwork. The MoMA is often considered one of the most prestigious museums in the entire country and its exhibitions range from architecture and design to electronic media and film, guaranteeing that they will give students interested in art a wide-range of educational experiences. The museum does cost money but it also offers a variety of programs for educational groups of all ages.

#4 - International Spy Museum (Washington DC)

One of the newer destinations on the list, the International Spy Museum has been a part of Washington D.C. since 2002 and has quickly become one of the more popular destinations for students and tourists alike. Between the large number of historical artifacts, the secret history lessons and the classes on "How to Become a Spy", there is something for students of all ages and it is an educational experience to be seen.

#5 - San Diego Zoo (San Diego, CA)

Another field trip no-brainer, the San Diego Zoo is one of the biggest and best zoos in the country if not the world. There are nearly 4,000 distinct species housed in the zoo's Balboa Park location including polar bears, monkeys, elephants, gorillas and pandas. Simply put, kids, especially younger ones, will never want to leave this museum. It is nearly impossible to see everything the zoo offers in one trip, so it might be worthwhile to schedule two.

#6 - Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum (Austin, TX)

Located on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin, the LBJ Presidential Library is a walk through the life of one of our most outspoken and influential presidents. A leader in the Civil Rights Movement and the War on Poverty, students will not only learn a great deal about U.S. History and our country's political history, but they will also leave inspired at the vast amount of good that can be accomplished by one powerful man.

#7 - Riley's Farm (Yucaipa, CA)

About two hours east of Los Angeles is not necessarily where one might expect to find one of the more fun war museums to visit, but Riley's Farm, which doubles as an apple orchard as well as a "living history" farm plays host to Revolutionary and Civil War experiences, dinner theaters, and overnight experiences. It is the quintessential field trip experience. In fact, it is almost explicitly designed for field trips and large groups to visit. The living history education is its calling card, but there is so much to do that students won't have time to wander off or get bored.

#8 - The Freedom Trail (Boston, MA)

Boston was the birthplace of the American Revolution and so it is only right to pay your respects by walking the Freedom Trail. Located in the heart of the city, the Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile walk that leads students to historically significant sites. There are museums and houses and churches and cemeteries, but most importantly, there are countless stories of historical nature that will teach kids about the birthplace of the country. It can be a bit hectic to keep track of an entire group on a long walk, but if you as a teacher are up for it, there are few experiences like it in New England.

#9 - Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Cleveland, OH)

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame admittedly offers a bit less education than some of the other locales on this list, but that doesn't mean it doesn't make for a good field trip. There are exhibits on the history of Rock and Roll, cities that have helped shape Rock and Roll and, of course, famous Rock and Rollers. The Hall of Fame also is constantly hosting interviews with famous rockers and events and other public programs that are a real joy for attendees. Teachers may have trouble justifying the educational value, but it is still a must-see museum.

#10 - National Museum of African American History and Culture (Washington DC)

At this point, African-American Culture is woven into the very fabric of the country and the history of African-Americans is rich and full of inspiring, tragic and emotional stories. The National Museum is set up to tell all those stories and it does so with incredible aplomb. There are over 33,000 items in its collection and each one tells its own story and marks its own place - positive or negative - in the history of African-American culture in the United States. It is not also cheery and happy, but it is still important for students to recognize and learn from this history so that they can help create their own.

#11 - Everglades National Park (South Florida)

Science teachers won't find a more vibrant and luscious ecosystem to show their students. Of course, it will be difficult to cover all 1.5 million acres in the National Park, but guided tours are available and the park staff does an excellent job of catering these tours to students to help them make the most of it. Also, the Everglades are in trouble. Years of development in South Florida have created a toxic environment that is slowly killing off one of the most beautiful places in the country. Teachers can use the occurrences as an opportunity to discuss environmental issues and help create better stewards for the future.

#12 - Fenway Park (Boston, MA)

The park is one of the oldest in baseball and it is full of rich history and tradition. Obviously it caters to a specific audience, but there is nothing cooler for a young kid who likes baseball to be on the field. And non-baseball lovers can enjoy it too, or can at least enjoy a day off from real school.

#13 - Pima Air and Space Museum (Tucson, AZ)

Simply put, Pima Air & Space Museum is massive. It boasts more than 4,000 aircraft, including a B-29 Superfortress, and covers more than 2,000 acres. They host regular events that cater to children of all ages and there is plenty to see for adults too. You can find quite of bit of aviation history in the desert and it will promise more than a few awe-inspiring planes as well. Entry is less than $20 and readily welcome large groups and field trips.

#14 - The Holocaust Museum (Washington DC)

The National Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. is probably not for the young students, but it is a must-visit in our opinion. It is much more than just a brick-and-mortar museum but the museum is a powerful experience. It is not for the faint of heart, but it is also an important part of history. The exhibits are thoughtful and rich in details, but they don't pull any punches either. The Museum does a great job of producing primary source media in many different forms. The staff also understands how to cater to students and has an exhibition , Remember the Children: Daniel's Story , that is carefully designed for even elementary school students.

#15 - Griffith Observatory (Los Angeles, CA)

The Observatory is not only located in a picturesque spot in the Hollywood hills, it is also one of the country's best planetariums and theaters. The Observatory is so popular that its non-profit, Friends of the Observatory , sponsors an annual school program for fifth-grade students that takes place three days per week and is a two-and-half hour program loaded with fun and engaging content that also aligns with state standards. It may feel like you are on vacation when you get there, but once you are inside, it is all learning.

#16 - The Gentle Barn (Santa Clarita, CA - Knoxville, TN, - Dittmer, MO)

The Gentle Barn is a feel-good favorite, especially for younger students. The field trips are especially fun as students get a two-hour tour full of close-up encounters with some of the sweetest animals on earth. Kids get to play with pigs and hug cows and chase chickens and get a lot of information about the animals and their lives. The organization has grown increasingly popular and recently opened and Knoxville, Tenn. Location as well.

Henry Ford is famous for inventing the automobile, but the museum named after him celebrates much more than that. Ford's cars were one of the country's greatest and long-lasting inventions and the museum is dedicated to honoring his thinking and vision as much as his legacy with the automobile. The Museums offers tours of real factories to students and tries to help foster the next generation of ingenuity.

#18 - Alcatraz (San Francisco, CA)

Alcatraz Island and its famous prison are a fun trip for all ages but they can be especially exciting for students. Sure, probably won't connect back to core curriculum in the classroom, but there is plenty of history worth exploring, both good and bad. It is also a place full of incredible stories and colorful personalities. Students will take pictures inside jail cells and learn about some of the country's most famous criminals.

There is a lot of history in Gettysburg and a lot of ghosts of seasons past too. The Park is used to student visitors by now and can help teachers plan a lot day with plenty to do. For the students, the stories and impressive memorabilia can be both exciting and informative. Viewing the field of battle, it is hard not to be struck by how eerie it can feel.

For whatever reason, caves can be really exciting to walk or climb through. This is especially true for students. Younger students will love learning about rock formations and geological science as they climb through one of the more picturesque caves in the Western United States. With all due respect to Woolly Mammoths, their loss was our gain. Many centuries ago, a large group of mammoths were caught in a hot spring in South Dakota. Fast-forward to present day and that location is home to one of the most impressive collections of bones in the entire country. The science community was smart to preserve the area and its artifacts and now the site is a fascinating place to visit and a renowned research center to boot. Students will be rapt with attention.

#22 - Utah Shakespeare Festival (Cedar City, UT)

This would be more than just an ordinary field trip, but if the teacher can find the funds to bring his/her high school students to the annual festival hosted by Southern Utah University, they will not be disappointed. The people-watching alone is worth the journey and for theater students, it is an incredible opportunity to mingle with like-minded students from across the country and practice their love for acting and for literature.

#23 - Alaska Sealife Center (Seward, AK)

The Sealife Center in Seward has something for everyone. It is a public aquarium for younger students looking to explore sealife, in-depth research for students much further along in their education and an array of educational opportunities for remote students to learn more about the state's incredibly diverse sealife and ecosystem. A big part of the Center's purpose is education and they take it seriously. There are few places in the country with more well-rounded opportunities to learn about the oceans and the creatures in it.

Not far west from Atlanta, the Etowah Indian Mounds are an archaeological site that is well-known for its remarkably successful preservation. Students who visit will learn about some of the first people to ever live in what is now the state of Georgia and they can learn in-depth about the culture and life of their predecessors. The Mounds have produced incredible displays of tools, weapons and pottery that each tell their own history lessons. It is always important for students to understand history in all forms.

Run by the good folks over at McNeese State University, West Louisiana is now home to one of the most exciting environmental learning centers anywhere in the country. Unlike some museums that offer students learning opportunities, Naturelab is built for students and its curriculum is designed to engage them in many educational lessons where students also can get their hands dirty. Teachers can cater the field trip to whatever lesson they want to teach and students get a firsthand experience on a variety of topics.

#26 - Science Museum of Minnesota (St. Paul, MN)

The Science Museum of Minnesota is no stranger to field trips and its staff usually coordinates different options for students and teachers to choose from. For example, there may be an interactive exhibit on mazes, or an educational film in the Omni theater, or even a picture and portrait gallery on race or gender. They won't limit the students to just one program either as the staff encourages students to explore the multitude of engaging exhibits on their own as well.

#27 - Chesapeake Bay Foundation (Chesapeake, MD)

The Chesapeake Bay is one of the more vibrant watersheds on the Eastern Seaboard and so it should come as no surprise that science teachers flock to its shores so that students can experience the environment firsthand. The Foundation takes students out on the boat and shows them the watershed up close and personal. Not only do kids get to see some incredible wildlife, they learn a lot about the surrounding ecosystem as well.

Located on Pier 15, the Exploratorium is a must-see in San Francisco for people of all ages, but it can be especially exciting for students. The Exploratorium generally lets teachers set their own agendas and guide their own tours, but they are more than willing to arrange for special presentations or speeches if available. The Exploratorium is exactly what is sounds like - a place where students can explore a vast number of different areas of interest and still leave wanting more.

#29 - Staten Island Children's Museum (New York, NY)

Generally best for younger students, the Staten Island's Children Museum is a favorite for teachers in New York City. With guided programs and lessons and curriculum in everything from science to language to early childhood education, teachers can find something for all their students and they can know that the students won't just learn, but also have fun. The trip is free for schools on the Island, but it isn't much costlier for other schools as well.

#30 - Oroville Dam (Feather River, CA)

An hour north of Sacramento, this 770-foot behemoth is responsible for keeping the Lake Oroville reservoir at bay. It was recently in the news for damage to the dam that caused flooding but now that things are under control, it truly is a modern marvel in civil engineering and architecture. The dam is practically a living, breathing, organism and tours give students an inside look at how the enormous operation is run.

#31 - Jamestown Settlement (Jamestown, VA)

The country's first permanent settlement has evolved into a museum and national landmark that adults and students alike visit in droves. There is still plenty left over for students to see and there is obviously a lot of learn about the stories of the first settlers. Not all the history is positive, but it is an important part of national identity and so students will buy in.

#32 - Cajun Country Swamp Tours (Breaux Bridge, LA)

The swamp tours in and around New Orleans are normally considered a tourist activity but it can be an awesome experience for students too. Yes, getting to see the gators is the coolest part of the tour, but the local guides know their stuff and there is plenty more to see than just gators. The tour can give students a peek at the vibrant aquatic ecosystem in the Bayou. Considering the kids are trapped on the boat, it is easy to keep track of them too.

Everyone's favorite ice cream is made in a Vermont factory. The normal tour is just 30 minutes, but the staff has been willing to make extra exceptions for school groups and what kid isn't going to enjoy the tour of an ice cream factory? The business and operations side of things is equally interesting however, especially for kids who can separate themselves from their ice cream. If teachers can get parents to splurge for a tie-dye tee shirt, all the better.

#34 - Monticello (Charlottesville, VA)

The historic home of Thomas Jefferson is a favorite of teachers in Virginia. The home is now a well-oiled machine that includes guided tours of the exquisite interior and exterior. The house is filled with so much history and so many stories, that students will be surprised how much there is to know about one house. The grounds are beautiful and in case you hadn't heard, Jefferson was kind of a big deal, so his artifacts are important pieces of history.

#35 - Mammoth Cave (Mammoth Cave, KY)

Mammoth Cave is a National Park as well as the most extensive cave system in the U.S. It is one of the more popular tourist and field trip destinations in the south central part of the country thanks in large part to its incredible sights, professionally-run guided tours, and interesting factoids about geological patterns and how caves are formed. This is a full day trip that all students can enjoy.

#36 - Walden Pond (Concord, MA)

Made famous by the poet and all-around renaissance man Henry David Thoreau, this pond in suburban Massachusetts is a quiet locale where students can learn about the works of Thoreau and his contemporaries like Ralph Waldo Emerson. Students will get the chance to explore the cabin that Thoreau lived in and enjoy a serene walk in nature around the pond. Tours are offered through the Concord Museum.

#37 - Kootenai Wildlife Refuge (Bonners Ferry, ID)

The non-profit organization that helps sponsor the refuge, Friends of Kootenai National Widlife Refuge, offer tours on four different trails on the refuge, all of which guarantee to show off a vast array of wildlife in its natural habitat. The tours can be guided or self-guided and teachers can help curate the content to meet their needs in the classroom.

#38 - Birch Aquarium at Scripps (San Diego, CA)

In the world of oceanography, the Scripps Institution at the UC San Diego is a household name. This should be all the reason any teacher ever needs to visit the on-site aquarium. The location is incredible but the vast array of species and ocean science that exists within its walls are the real treat. The Aquarium staff is used to young visitors and is more than willing to put together a somewhat specialized program to fit areas of study.

#39 - Hawk Mountain Sanctuary (Kempton, PA)

There are few sights more awe-inspiring than watching a bird of prey fly freely and thanks to Hawk Mountain's incredible location, that sight is commonplace at the conversation site. Thousands of Hawks and Falcons and Eagles pass across the locale and the group's dedication to the conservation of these birds makes for a fun and informative day trip. Students will undoubtedly relish watching the birds, but they will learn something too.

#40 - Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Chicago, IL)

The CSO is widely considered one of the finest orchestras in the entire world and while it might be too much for the younger students to sit through, it is the perfect destination for students passionate about music. Watching the talented musicians makes it obvious that the symphony experience is about much more than the incredible melodies. Teachers will need to plan to make accommodations but it will be worth the logistical headache.

#41 - Graceland Mansion (Memphis, TN)

Once the home of Elvis Pressley himself, the Graceland Museum has blossomed into an incredibly rich museum and shrine to the King. Graceland staff also run "Schooled on Rock", a customizable education program that teaches students about far more than just Elvis but also about the history of rock and roll. Even elementary school students will recognize the name of Elvis and the chance to see some of his most colorful paraphernalia up close.

#42 - Seattle Fire Department Tour (Seattle, WA)

The city of Seattle has a comprehensive program for students that want to visit their local fire station. The tour is probably better for younger students that will be delighted by the chance to climb in the fire trucks and test out the outfits, but the city and local firemen do an incredible job with the curriculum and make the experience a memorable one for students.

#43 - International Clown Museum (Baraboo, WI)

With apologies to the people who have seen the movie It, the International Clown Hall of Fame may be off the beaten path a bit, but it is also an incredibly engaging place to visit. The Hall of Fame is also a research center dedication to the advancement of clown arts. There are exhibits on famous clowns, the art behind clown performances, and the history of the art. It may be scary for a few, but for those with more courage, they won't be disappointed.

#44 - Fort Sumter National Monument (Charleston, SC)

Teachers have two options when they visit Fort Sumter. There is Fort Sumter itself in the city harbor and there is Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island. Both are run by the National Park Service and each serves a special place in our country's history. Each tour has its upside but the fact that students get to enjoy a boat ride out to Fort Sumter makes it better in our book. Students will get to learn a lot of history of not just the fort but the country as well. The tours work better in small groups, just FYI.

#45 - The Mystery Spot (Santa Cruz, CA)

The only knock on the Mystery Spot is that the tour will be over too soon for a full field trip. But the visual illusions at this attraction in the middle of the Santa Cruz forest are truly mind-boggling. The organization has expanded and the site is now exceedingly well-run. The staff is willing to cater to field trips in the sense that they offer specific programming in addition to the guided tour. The illusions are the main attraction but there is plenty to be learned about what you are looking at as well.

The North Mississippi Fish Hatchery Visitor Education Center not only helps promote safe and responsible fishing, but it also serves as an educational hub for aquatic life in the state's many ecosystems. Students will get the chance to not only learn about the fish and wildlife, they will also get a crash course in conservation and the importance of the surrounding environment. The Center is meant for visitors and so of course, school groups of all ages are welcome.

#49 - Kokua Hawaii Foundation Farm Field Trips (Haleʻiwa, HI)

The Kokua Foundation schedules farm field trips for students across the islands in a way to help promote local culture and the islands' delicate environment. Students will get firsthand experience in what makes the Hawaiian ecosystem so incredible and will learn all about conservation techniques and farming strategies that are still being employed across the islands today. If you don't forget to bring water and don't wander too far off the beaten path, Joshua Tree National Park can be an exciting, if seemingly desolate, field trip destination. There are, however, so many science-related museums and attractions around the U.S. that it can be hard to sift through and find the best. • New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science - Albuquerque - If your group loves dinosaurs , where better to see their fossils than where they were excavated? 10 Tips on How to Plan a Science Field Trip

If you are a homeschooling parent, I am sure you are looking for ways to get your kids outside. I also know that you probably want to do some meaningful science projects. But how can you combine the two? A great way is by going on field trips. One of the greatest challenges. however, is knowing how to plan your adventure and make it a meaningful learning experience. Let me share with you ten tips on how to plan a field trip: where to go, what to do, how to do it, and how to build community.

Tips on Where to Go

When you step out your door, the world is a big place. It may feel overwhelming to come up with a good idea for a field trip. So many possibilities exist. The key is to keep it simple. 

Tip #1 is to take a look at your immediate surroundings. Do you have a yard or a garden? Does it have plants, trees or other natural features?  Do birds fly in to visit at a feeder? Some of the easiest field trips can be done from the convenience of your own property.

Tip #2 is to consider what is located within walking (or biking) distance from you. Try thinking outside the box a little here as we often stick to our well-worn paths. Are there any babbling brooks in your town?  What about flower gardens downtown?  A path through the woods? An open area to look at the sky? An urban park? If it helps, take out Google Maps and get to know the geography of your area a little better. You might find something new to explore that would make a fun field trip.

Tip #3 is for when you feel like going farther afield, Brainstorm what types of places appeal to your family the most. Are you water lovers?  Perhaps drive to a river, lake, or ocean that you can do for a day trip. Do you like to hike? Plenty of field trips center around terrain that you might see on a typical walk through meadows, woods, or hillsides. Do you want to see the stars? Perhaps a camping trip away from the city lights would be best.

No matter where you decide to go, the most important thing to remember is that there is a science field trip in the offing! Why am I so certain about it? Because that’s what The Field Trip Academy is all about!

Once you have picked a place, the next step is to think about what types of science activities you might like to do while you are there. 

• Tip #4 is to consider using a community science (a.k.a. citizen science) project as the “anchor” for your learning. If you are not familiar with this term, it is basically a partnership between scientists and the community. The researchers provide guidance on what to observe and record and you provide them with the information that they seek when you are on your field trip.To get some ideas, consider reading one of our blog posts:

After looking through some possibilities, try to match a project to your preferred location so that you have a starting point for your science exploration.

Tips on How to Do It

This step is the one that will require you to put in the most time in planning. Here are some tips on what to consider as you plan out your field trip:

• Tip #5 is to ask yourself, “What resources do I need to do this trip?” If you are doing a community science project, it may require gathering some materials or downloading an App onto your phone. If you want to incorporate additional experiments or projects, add those materials to your list. Plan your field trip far enough in advance so that you can get your materials ordered (if needed), get your Apps downloaded, and have proper clothing packed.
• Tip #6 is to decide whether you think any background lessons are needed before you go to your location. Ask yourself, “Would my learner(s) benefit from reading about this science topic or watching a video? Preparing them ahead of time will make their experience in the field a lot more focused, purposeful, and successful.
• Tip #7 is to maximize your time while you are on site. The community science component might be a relatively small “ask” on the part of the scientists. It could be as simple as taking a chemical measurement or uploading a photo of a nature observation. If you have set aside a large portion of your day, you will want to go further in your science engagement. Ask yourself, “What other activities can my family do while we are at this type of nature location? You may want to do some google searching ahead of time to come up with some ideas.
• Tip #8 is to consider whether you would like to incorporate other subjects into your field trip day like math, art, or writing.  Math is a natural corollary to doing science since so often science observations require measurements, calculations, data tables, and graphs. Art is another easy fit since the natural world can often be so beautiful and inspiring.  And for those who like to express themselves through the written word, having a writing prompt ready can help round out a kid’s field trip day.

How to Build Community

Finally, as you embark on your science field trips, consider bringing along another family or your co-op! It makes the whole experience more fun if you can do it as a community. This leads me to final two tips:

• Tip #9 is to find ways to make your field trip a collaborative experience between different youth. Often more than one set of hands is needed to perform a task or take a measurement. By making the activity collaborative, you allow each homeschooler to feel like they have an important role to play in the activity
• Tip #10 is build in opportunities after the field trip for your homeschooling families or co-op to share their experiences with one another. It gives the youth a way to express themselves and everyone then gets to learn from one another.

The 8 Best Cities for Student Field Trips

Field trips are essential to any curriculum because of their unique ability to inspire students’ interest in the class material and to provide a sense of relatability that you simply can’t find in a textbook. Students will return from these eight destinations with a greater appreciation for both their course of study and the course of history.

Boston, Massachusetts

Often referred to as the “Cradle of Liberty” due to its role in instigating the American Revolution,  Boston  is a city jam-packed with fascinating history and rich culture. Originally established by Puritans as a refuge from religious persecution in Europe, Boston was consistently a hot spot for unrest. Most notably, the  Boston Tea Party  and various boycotts and uprisings during the Revolutionary period took place in Boston. Today, the city is known for its slew of prestigious colleges and vibrant art and music scene. Due to the plethora of historic landmarks, students will not soon forget the giant outdoor museum that is Boston.

Begin your exploration of Boston with a visit to  Plimoth Plantation , a recreation of a 17 th -century English village where the first Pilgrims would have lived. Role players will act as citizens of the Plymouth colony and educate students through storytelling and tours. For groups looking to gain more insight into the American Revolution, take a walking tour on the  Freedom Trail , a three-mile trail that traces the events leading up to the War of Independence. Students can stroll through the  Old South Meeting House  – the site of the  Boston Massacre  – the  Paul Revere House  and the  Bunker Hill Monument  before eating lunch in the  Boston Common , the oldest park in the nation.

Next, book a tour aboard the  Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum  for a living history presentation that will ignite students’ imaginations. Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty will guide your student group through a reenactment of the Boston Tea Party town meeting and give them the opportunity to destroy British tea at  Griffin’s Wharf  as the revolutionaries once did. Expand students’ knowledge of the anti-slavery movement in Boston by touring the  Black Heritage Trail  and walking through the  Museum of African-American History . Boston was the first state in the U.S. to record no slaves and is home to the  African Meeting House  on Beacon Hill, where many major abolitionist speeches were given.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Besides being the home of the famed Philly cheesesteak,  Philadelphia  is regarded as the birthplace of American democracy. Originally founded as a place of religious tolerance, it was recognized as the largest and most significant city during the  American Revolution  and even served as the unofficial capital of the U.S. throughout the  War of Independence . Philadelphia is a city of firsts, boasting America’s first daily newspaper, hospital, medical school and zoo. From the iconic hoagies (sub sandwiches) and the plentiful public art to the slew of historic locations and artifacts, Philadelphia will make a lasting impression on all student groups.

Students can visualize Revolutionary America after touring  Independence National Historical Park.  The park displays the cracked  Liberty Bell  and allows travel groups to walk through  Independence Hall  – the location where both the  Declaration of Independence  and the  U.S. Constitution  were signed. The park also includes exhibits such as  Benjamin Franklin Museum ,  Congress Hall  and the residence of first president  George Washington . In addition, students can explore the former home of  Betsy Ross , who supposedly stitched the first American flag.

After learning about the early politics of America, students can check out the progression of the money creation process at the  United States Mint . Tour groups can observe the coining method above the factory floor as well as the first coining press; they can even say hello to Peter, the resident bald eagle. It is recommended that tour groups visit Philadelphia during the months of September through March due to reduced crowds. Although food isn’t allowed in any of the historical buildings, students may picnic in the park or eat in the cafeteria provided for school groups in the  National Constitution Center .

All American students should experience the center of it all – the U.S. capital, the political hub of the nation – Washington D.C. Schools all over the country schedule a trip to D.C. to experience the home base of all three branches of government and explore the many museums. Students will not only feel more connected to their studies but also to their country after seeing firsthand where the President of the United States lives and the buildings where some of the largest and most consequential national decisions are made.

Washington D.C. lends itself to student travel due to its abundance of tour programs and impressive number of landmarks and attractions. Most must-see sites are on the National Mall , a national park that spans from the Lincoln Memorial to the United States Capitol building. Request a staff-led tour at the U.S. Capitol to learn all about congressional meetings and procedures and allow time for your students to gape at the immensity of the marble immortalization of President Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial. Also on the National Mall are Smithsonian museums such as the National Museum of American History and the National Air and Space Museum .

Encourage students to apply their knowledge of American politics while touring major government buildings such as the White House , Supreme Court building and Library of Congress. Expose students to more serious events and themes such as attending the solemn Changing of the Guard ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery and paying respects at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum . Lighten the mood at the Newseum and the Spy Museum , two attractions that combine educational exhibits with interactive activities that all students will love.

Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham , the “Magic City,” is best known for its role in the American Civil Rights Movement and its iron and steel production. During the 1950s and 1960s, African Americans in Birmingham were targeted by the Ku Klux Klan, often resulting in bombings or other violent acts. Activists such as Fred Shuttlesworth and Martin Luther King, Jr. fought against the brutality by speaking and leading demonstrations in Birmingham. Students learning about the Civil Rights Movement or Southern culture will benefit from the wide variety of museums and historic landmarks and the invigorating ways of life that constitute Birmingham.

Educate your student group about the American Civil Rights Movement through the compelling exhibits at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute . The BCRI includes displays that address the Jim Crow laws, Black Power in the Black Belt, women of the Civil Rights Movement and the bombings at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church . After learning about the atrocity at the BCRI, students can pay their respects at the actual Birmingham church where the tragic event unfolded.

Student groups will appreciate a trip to other diverse museums such as the U.S. Space and Rocket Museum , located in Huntsville, AL about 90 miles North of Birmingham. Additionally, the Birmingham Museum of Art and  the McWane Science Center are popular destinations for student groups. Named after the statue on the top of Red Mountain that overlooks the city, the Vulcan Park and Museum includes exhibits that enlighten students about the city’s history and future. Programs are designed based on students’ ages, and there’s a personalized tour for every grade from lessons about family life in early Birmingham to curriculum about Birmingham during difficult times such as the Great Depression and the Civil Rights Era.

St. Louis, Missouri

Often called the “Gateway to the West,” St. Louis is best-known for its role in the Louisiana Purchase , the impetus for westward expansion in the U.S and the birthplace of the ice cream cone. The iconic silver arch acts both has a tribute to famous explorers Lewis and Clark and as a gateway into the vivacious city on the edge of Missouri. After the Great Migration, when over six million African Americans moved to northern cities from the South, St. Louis became a melting pot of cultures. Today, visitors can sense this variety of heritage in blues music, barbeque restaurants, toasted ravioli and baseball games.

St. Louis is the perfect field trip destination because it provides an array of museums that cover topics in art, science, music and history. Students of all ages will have a blast at the City Museum , an interactive museum of St. Louis history that doubles as an indoor and outdoor playground. The Magic House Children’s Museum is a must-see for younger student groups, as is the Planetarium at the St. Louis Science Center. Here's what you need to know before moving to Ohio.

Ohio, with its vast river valleys, scenic rolling hills, lush state parks, UNESCO-listed sites, and top-notch entertainment, receives over 200 million visitors each year . But the Buckeye State has also emerged as an increasingly popular destination to call home, welcoming over 200,000 new out-of-state residents in 2022 , most relocating from Florida. 

While everyone's reasons for putting down roots in a new place are different, several factors make Ohio a desirable place to live. The state's low cost of living, eight percent lower than the national average, and affordable housing — the median home price is $217,698 — are certainly a major draw both for young families looking for a place to settle down and retirees seeking a budget-friendly destination to spend their golden years.

And there are plenty of charming communities to consider — from peaceful small towns to bustling cities, these are the best places to live in Ohio.

"One of the best things about Dayton is that despite its size, it still has a small-town feel — you'll be greeted with a smile and polite hello no matter where you go," Dayton-based president of Irongate Inc., Realtors Rhonda Chambal said of this city of over 137,000 residents. Dayton is home to one of the largest Air Force bases in the country, employing over 30,000 people. Healthcare, defense, and education are three of the city's most important industries, with an unemployment rate of four percent , just 0.1 percent higher than the national average. 

Chambal explained that the relatively low cost of living (about six percent below the national average), proximity to larger cities (Cincinnati and Columbus are about an hour away), good-rated school districts, diverse dining options, and a rich cultural scene attract people to the area.

Another major draw? According to Zillow, the median home value in Dayton is around $143,000 , over $200,000 below the national average.

With 10 percent of Cincinnati covered in parks, the third-largest city in Ohio is also one of the nation's greenest. Sports fans here have three professional teams to support, but it is art enthusiasts who probably have it best. With over two dozen top-notch museums and at least 10 performance venues and theaters, the city is an art lover's paradise. 

"While most of the state is very flat, Cincinnati is set among rolling, green hills overlooking the Ohio River, offering outdoor recreation year-round and a milder climate than our northern neighbors," Steve Early, a realtor at Sibcy Cline Realtors/Luxury Portfolio International , added. "From suburbs with large yards to urban living on the streetcar line with award-winning dining only steps away, this affordable city has never been more vibrant and diverse."

Because the city is rooted in history, newcomers can find all types of homes — from historic Victorian and craftsman houses to modern apartments and urban lofts. But best of all, home values here are well below the national average — currently around $235,00, according to Zillow .

Nestled on the shores of Lake Erie, Toledo is the perfect home base for those seeking scenic waterfront views, a laid-back lifestyle, and endless outdoor recreation. The city's bustling art scene includes the world-class Toledo Museum of Art. And sports fans will thrive here — Toledo has many sports venues and a Minor League Baseball team. But most importantly, the city blends low cost of living — almost 28 percent below the national average — and affordable housing. In fact, Toledo's real estate market was ranked best in the country in 2024. Currently, median home values stand at about $116,000, also attracting many retirees on a budget .

This beautiful northeast Ohio city recently outperformed 150 urban areas nationwide and ranked first in U.S. News & World Report's list of the most affordable places to retire . Thanks to its bustling arts scene, excellent healthcare facilities, proximity to larger cities, and affordable cost of living (18 percent lower than the national average), Youngstown is an excellent place to call home, whether you're a young professional or a senior.

"On the business spectrum, Youngstown is home to several companies, including the DeBartolo Corporation, Steelite International, and Gasser Chair. Youngstown has successfully changed the narrative from 'Rust' to 'Tech Belt,' leading the way in 3D printing and additive manufacturing, thanks to our nationally recognized business incubator ," Patrick Burgan, owner and broker at Burgan Real Estate , explained.

And even though home prices are on the rise, they are still much more affordable than in other areas of the country; the median home price in the Mahoning Valley is $178,000.

If access to world-class healthcare facilities is a priority, then Cleveland should be at the top of your list. The city is home to two of the largest multi-branch medical centers in the country, The Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, as well as several children's hospitals. 

"Adding to Cleveland's appeal is that we're known for diversity and culture. University Circle is a hub for global arts, higher education, culture, and science," Janis McCormick, regional vice president of Ohio East at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services/Luxury Portfolio International , said, noting that the city's year-round cultural festivals, local craft brewery scene, and street fairs also add to its appeal with newcomers. The city is also ranked one of the best places to retire in the country , where monthly expenses don't exceed $1,700.

In terms of real estate, McCormick explained that the city offers a range of architectural styles.

"For instance, we have urban, country, and small-town settings. You can find a bungalow on the river just a short walk from the city center or a 10-acre ranch estate. We also have a lot of very neat midcentury modern homes built around the time of the Frank Lloyd era that are sprinkled throughout Cleveland," she added. 

Median home values in Cleveland hover around the $100,000 mark , which makes the city one of the most affordable urban areas in the country.

To say that Columbus is booming right now would be an understatement. The city's population grew faster than any other metropolitan area in the U.S. in the second half of 2023, primarily thanks to its affordable cost of living and housing. 

"It is a goldmine for anyone looking to move their career up a notch," Julie Wills, a real estate agent at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, said. "Here, you've got everything from big Fortune 500 companies to buzzing startups and a whole spectrum of industries, from tech to healthcare. Throw in top-notch schools and a vibe that's all about family, and you've got yourself more than just a place to visit."

10 percent of the city's population is aged 65 or over, which is good news for those who want to retire here, as the city also offers plenty of activities for seniors .

Home prices in Columbus have been on a steady upward trajectory for the past eight years, with no sign of slowing down. However, they are still affordable for first-time buyers. The median home price is around $240,000, and Wills explained that as values keep climbing, those who invest in property right now are looking at a "sweet return down the line."

Just like a few other places in Ohio, Akron was also recently spotlighted as a sought-after destination for retirees, but the city, which is also the birthplace of NBA superstar LeBron James, has a lot to offer families and young professionals. A beautiful parks system, excellent healthcare facilities, arts centers and museums, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, and a Minor League Baseball team are just some of the amenities and urban facilities that make Akron a wonderful place to live.

"Akron has grown so much over the years. Businesses are booming and people are excited to move here," Ann Kyner, vice president and regional manager at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services , said. "We have a little of everything here — from charming historic homes to colonial and ranch-style residences. Just outside our downtown area, there are communities with horses and stables. It doesn't take much of a drive beyond the city center before you find a more rural vibe, complete with equestrians riding the trails."

And while real estate prices have gone up over eight percent since last year, the median home value has remained under $130,000, according to Zillow .

If bustling Columbus is not your cup of tea, consider this mid-size town of about 50,000 just 40 miles east of Ohio's capital. Newark is undergoing a major downtown restoration, making the town even more attractive to new residents. The city is a great place for families thanks to its many parks and green spaces (the 775-acre Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve is nearby), good schools, and affordable home prices — the current median house value is $217,000, up 10 percent since last year.

Highlighted as the third-best emerging housing market in the country in a recent report by The Wall Street Journal and Realtor.com, Canton is an under-the-radar town an hour south of Cleveland. One of its most well-known landmarks is the Football Hall of Fame, but Canton is chock-full of galleries, museums, parks, and top-notch dining spots.

"Canton is very affordable and full of places for adventure and new experiences," Dominic Fonte, a real estate agent at Cutler Real Estate/Luxury Portfolio International , explained, noting that the town's neighborhoods offer a great variety of schools, amenities, and home styles such as ranches, apartments, and new construction residences.

The Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt

Built between 2550 and 2490 B.C. Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza housed Pharaoh Khufu's tomb. It's the largest of three ancient pyramids and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World . Around 200 structures still stand on the steep 7,970-foot mountainside ridge, and more than 3,000 steps connect the sections. One of Machu Picchu's most wondrous aspects is its water collection system that ensured this epic hillside spot flourished. These incredible ruins are called "The Lost City of the Incas", because the city was abandoned 100 years after its construction when Spanish conquistadors arrived. Taj Mahal, India

India's Taj Mahal is a mausoleum commissioned by Shah Jahan in 1631, but not completed until 1653. Shah Jahan wanted this incredible building to honor his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Its instantly recognizable dome is 115 feet tall, nearly the same height as its walls. It's an incredible example of Mughal architecture and India's most famous building. The Taj Mahal is located in Utter Pradesh on the Yamuna River's banks. Each year 8 million tourists admire its ivory walls.

The Acropolis of Athens, Greece Mainland

The Acropolis of Athens in Greece is an ancient citadel dating from the 5th century B.C. The famous statesman Perikles oversaw its construction along with other incredible monuments such as the nearby temple of Athena Nike and the Parthenon.

It's located on a hillside towering above Athens and was built to honor the city's patron goddess Athena. A huge statue of Athena stood there at one point, but that's lost to time. Nevertheless, this impressive building has withstood wars and earthquakes for thousands of years. Today, it receives over three million annual visitors. It's one of the most popular UNESCO heritage sites in the world.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Over two million people visit the Great Barrier Reef in Australia annually. This thriving ecosystem covers over 134,000 square miles and became a UNESCO site in 1981.

Situated on the northeast Australian coastline, the Great Barrier Reef is home to the world's largest assortment of coral reefs. Over 400 types of coral live in its waters, along with the threatened dugong and large green turtle .

UNESCO states that no other heritage site contains such rich biodiversity, but this unique seascape is under threat from climate change.

Stonehenge, England

Standing in an English field next to the A30 road is a 5,000-year-old circular prehistoric monument called Stonehenge . This incredible engineering feat is older than Egypt's pyramids and Julius Caesar's Rome.

This circle of standing stone, brought from Wales , has mystified archaeologists for years. Modern research suggests it is just one small part of a wider complex, but its purpose is still unclear.

Around 1.5 million annual tourists visit to wonder why Stone Age humans constructed this space. It's one of Britain's most popular UNESCO heritage sites.

The Rose City of Petra, Jordan

Petra "The Rose City" is an ancient city in southern Jordan , located 150 miles south of Bethlehem. Most people recognize it for the rose-colored rock cutouts, but this ancient city metropolis was once the center of an Arab kingdom in the 4th century B.C. It's half constructed and half cut out of rock.

Petra is threatened by floods and war damage, but it's still an incredible site visited by just under a million tourists each year.

North America's Most Visited UNESCO Site

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983. This vast national park attracts around 12-14 million annual visitors.

Over 90% of this National Park is managed for wildlife and it contains the largest sections of old-growth temperate forests in North America. Over 1,500 black bears live here, alongside many endangered species such as the Indiana bat, spruce-fir moss spider , and northern flying squirrel.

Nearly 4800 new students on course for UniSC orientation

Campuses from Moreton Bay to Fraser Coast are set to welcome nearly 4,800 new students to the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2024.

Starting Monday 19 February, Orientation week is a chance for new students to meet new friends, join clubs, visit facilities and find out what else is on offer at UniSC.

This includes 2,637 enrolled to study at Sunshine Coast campus, 1,333 at Moreton Bay, 144 at Caboolture, 114 at Fraser Coast, 47 at Gympie, and 1,386 online.

UniSC Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Helen Bartlett said she was pleased to see strong enrolment numbers, and a particularly strong growth across the engineering programs.

“It's such an exciting time for new students, the chance to visit their new campus before the serious study begins,” Professor Bartlett said.

Engineering experienced a 13.1 percent increase on last year across Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic, Mechanical and Mechatronic degree programs.

Commencing student Baxter Burke of Caloundra is looking forwards to applying his lifelong love of the outdoors towards studying a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and Bachelor of Environmental Studies in a double degree at the Sippy Downs campus.

“My interests in sustainability were sparked through my parents from a young age as they taught me to think and live sustainably,” said Baxter, who received an early offer to study while still a school Vice-Captain in Year 12 at Caloundra State High School last year.

Along with a group of fellow students and teachers, he formed an environmental club to implement eco-friendly ideas at the school and used his leadership position to encourage others.

“I knew I wanted to do something that makes a change in some way, whether that’s helping out the environment or the next generation,” he said.

“UniSC had a degree that offered exactly that, so I jumped at the opportunity.”

UniSC also met his criteria for sustainability impact. Last year, UniSC placed equal 29th in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings measured against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and among the top three for clean water and sanitation.

On top of this, UniSC has campuses across three of Australia’s five UNESCO biosphere reserves, a nature-lover’s dream.

“I was also one of five lucky winners to go on the UniSC Best Field Trip in the World and, after talking to a professor and student ambassador from the program, it solidified that this was the right step for me,” Baxter said.

“I’m looking forwards to meeting and making connections with a range of different people and maybe joining some of the uni clubs and activities”.

UniSC has 15,115 students enrolled for Semester One, 2024. This includes 4,792 new domestic and international students (4,398 new domestic and 394 new international students).
