3 days - Tambopata Amazon Jungle

We had an amazing time on this 3 day Amazon jungle experience. The communication leading up to the tour was excellent and the organisation was thorough. The accommodation at the eco lodge was practical and comfortable with a pool for a dip when needed. The food was above and beyond what we expected with a huge variety offered during the 3 days. We really enjoyed all the activities and were amazed at the number of animals we saw…. giant river otters, beautiful birds, caimans, a range of monkeys, tarantulas and Peruvian sloths (one was in a tree at the lodge!!) Overall I would highly recommend this tour to others who would like to explore the Tambopata River Amazon Jungle.

Amazon, Incas & Titicaca - 13 days Tour

Amazon, Incas & Titicaca - 13 days

This trip was amazing and included one of the best travel experiences of my life so far. Peru is a vibrant, exciting, fun and diverse place to visit. Im a solo traveller - plus gay man,and felt completely safe walking around solo in Lima, Cusco, and all the small villages and towns. I made great friends on this tour - including other solo travellers. This trip included all the highlights Peru has to offer, Machu Picchu, Cusco, Lamas and Alpacas, history, Local Food, amazing landscapes, Lake Titicaca and the floating island, cities, towns, villages, and of course The Amazon Jungle - my travel highlight. The Amazon accommodation was beautiful, located in the jungle. I would wake up to the sounds of Howler monkeys communicating outside my cabin each morning. Listening to the wildlife, while sitting on my fly screen covered balcony listening to the animals at sunrise and sunset - plus the fall of the rain in thenight time - was truly awesome. We took an amazing walk over suspension bridges elevated above the jungle canopy - with the tress filled with sloths and their babies. We did a boat night safari spotting the animals, and one day took a guided canoe ride into an inland lake - filled with fish, so our guide threw bits of food in the water and out came the piranhas to eat it - SOOO COOL. Machu Picchu is overwhelming. All those years seeing pictures and documentaries on Tv - to then be there and see it with your own eyes - such a overwhelming experience... and i mean that in the best way. The place is so much bigger in person. The train up and back is very comfortable with big windows - toilets and bar service in each cart. Great scenery rides heading up in the morning. Coming back - our cart turned into the party area and it was fun. There is quite a variety of altitude elevation in parts of Peru so you may at times feel dizzy - I was totally fine, I drank the Cocoa Tea supplied (helps with altitude sickness) everywhere we went and felt good - but others were sometimes feeling off. There are lots of Stairs and Slopped paths throughout Peru - so if you want 'buns of steel' by the end of the trip - you will get them visiting here. The tour itself was well paced - we would typically see sights in the morning and then return to our hotel to do our own thing for the rest of the day - great balance. Our Tour Leader John was wonderful - along with all our local guides in the different areas we visited - top notch. Really loved Peru and would recommend for everyone to go with ON THE GO.

Ecuador Treasures Bucket List 8 Days Tour

Alejandro was simply the BEST and made each and every day of our week long tour exceptional. He chose unbelievable accommodations that were unique and memorable and he knew the business owners and locals everywhere we went! Alejandro kept us on schedule so we could maximize our time there but remained flexible to meet the needs of our wanderlust and spur of the moment desires! We felt completely safe and "pampered" at all times. He is extremely knowledgeable of all things Ecuador, it's people, culture and environment.

Reviews of amazon cruises.

Service was excellent. Great way to explore the river and life surrounding it.
This trip was truly the trip of a lifetime. Jesus really submerges you into the Peruvian culture and the three days you’re there, you are nonstop with activities. Our guide was so knowledgeable and he made the trip. His family grew up in the rainforest so he was able to tell you the history about most things there (the families, the foods, the animals etc). We went during rainy season, and still had a wonderful time. If you’re looking for adventure, meeting wonderful people, and being in nature - this trip is for you!

The Different Cruises Offered

  • What To Pack
  • Plan Your River Cruise

The good news is the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest is a year-round destination, with different departure dates for each cruise trip. Travelers only need to take the wet and the dry season into consideration when traveling to the Amazon. There is a 23 ft difference in water level between these two seasons, so river cruise itineraries will slightly vary and different animals can be spotted in each season. Humidity stays steady at around 80% throughout the year and temperatures range from 71F to 89F.

  • High water season, December to May: During the high water season it rains around 20-25% more than during the low water season. Amazon rivers are higher, making them better accessible for boats and the Amazon rainforest is even more lush than usual. With the beginning of the rainfall, mating season also starts for many animals.
  • Low water season, June to November: During the low water season travelers can expect fewer rain showers, however as the name Amazon Rainforest suggests, rain is always a probability. Usually it rains for 1-2 hours per day during this season resulting in the rivers carrying less water, exposing hiking trails that are normally flooded during the high water season. Animals come out to the riverbanks looking for food and water, making some easier to spot during this season.

How to Get There

Iquitos is the largest city in the world that is not reachable by car, making it only accessible by boat or plane. For most travelers, in order to embark on the multi-day journey aboard a Peruvian Amazon river cruise travelers need to come to Iquitos by plane via Peru’s capital, Lima. LATAM, the biggest airline in the region, offers daily flights and in just under 2 hours travelers comfortably arrive in the north of Peru. Depending on the cruise ship and itinerary, you will embark from either the port in Iquitos or in Nauta, a two-hour drive from Iquitos.

The cruises offered within our packages are the best selection in Peru. We have hand-picked each of these cruises based on their incredible service, features, and comfort, so that you can focus on enjoying the perfect journey. The listed river cruises are all unique in their own way targeting all kinds of travelers. Consult with our Travel Advisors for more information regarding cabins and suites.

What to Pack

The weather in the Amazon Rainforest is always hot, humid and wet, therefore to enjoy the Amazon experience to the fullest it is important to bring the right clothing. Here’s what we recommend to pack:

  • Clothing. It is recommendable to bring clothing that is light, airy and made out of quick drying material. The clothes should be in light color.
  • Long sleeved pants and shirts are best for land-excursions to be protected from the sun and mosquitos.
  • On the boat shirts and shorts are fine.

  • Pro tip: Avoid black and yellow as mosquitos and other insects are attracted by them.
  • Comfortable walking or hiking shoes for excursions and sandals or tennis shoes for the time on the boat.

Where Is The Amazon River & Where Does Is Start And End?

Aerial View Of A Meandering Amazon Tributary River, Amazonian Rainforest

The Amazon River is located in Amazon Rainforest in the northern portion of South America. It originates high in the Andes Mountains of Peru and flows eastwards on a meandering 4,000-mile (6,400 km) journey, roughly one-third of its length in Peru and two-thirds in Brazil, before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean on Brazil’s northeastern coast.

That said the Amazon River has more than 1,100 tributaries — 17 of which themselves are over 930 miles (1,500 km) long — and so it can be argued that the Amazon River also flows in Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, and a small part of Venezuela too.

Where is the Amazon River on a map?

To help you better visualize where the Amazon River is please see the map of South America below. The green color is the Amazon Basin, the light blue lines the Amazon River’s tributaries and the longest dark blue line running horizontally is the main channel of the Amazon River.

Where Is The Amazon River & Where Does Is Start And End

South America & The Amazon River

To get the most accurate answer to where the Amazon River is located, we must ask ourselves where the Amazon River starts and ends exactly. A seemingly simple question I’m sure you’ll agree, but questions with surprisingly difficult and rather fascinating answers.

Where Does The Amazon River Start?

The question of where the Amazon River starts is one that has been fraught with debate for centuries and is why there is general confusion over the length of the Amazon. Historically five different rivers , all located in the Andes of Peru, have been heralded as its source, the most widely accepted being Lake Ticlla Cocha in the headwaters of the Apurimac River .

Much of the confusion arises from which of the three definitions of a river’s source is used. Is it the farthest point upstream that provides the largest volume of water, of the longest tributary in the river’s drainage basin, or of the longest tributary that flows continuously? The latter is the currently accepted definition, but this has not always been the case.

Throughout the 1700s, the Marañón River in northern Peru was considered the source as it holds the largest volume of water compared to other distant tributaries. Later, the Ucayali River, also in northern Peru, took the crown being a longer tributary than the Marañón.

In the 1930s the headwaters of the Apurimac River was the main focus of attention of many expeditions trying to find the true source, being the Amazon River’s most distant source with an uninterrupted flow. In 1935, Lake Vilafro took that title. By 1971, a National Geographic team had established that the Carhuasanta River flowing down the 5,500m high Nevado Mismi mountain in southwestern Peru was the source, but on a follow-up expedition in 2000 confirmed Lake Ticlla Cocha to be the source of the Carhuasanta River and hence the true source of the Amazon River.

Research published in 2014 in the journal Area put forth a new claim that in fact the Mantaro River, which begins north of Lima, is the source of the Amazon . Despite indeed being the farthest upstream source feeding the Amazon Basin, it does run dry for around five months of the year and so is not regarded as accurately based on the most accepted definition of a river’s source.

Where does the Amazon River End?

Measuring the length of a river might seem like a simple task but the fact of the matter is that the complete opposite is true. The easiest way to approach a question like ‘where does the Amazon River end is’ is to say that it ends in the Atlantic Ocean at Marajó Bay .

The Amazon River pumps so much water into the Atlantic that you could sail from the mouth of the river for dozens of miles in the ocean and still find freshwater, so which point should we use as the endpoint? To complicate matters further, the Amazon River has three main outlets into the Atlantic Ocean: two to the north of Marajó Island – the Northern Channel near Macapá, and the confusingly-named Southern Channel that hugs the northern coast of the island – and one even further south in Marajó Bay, passing through the Breves Channel around the western edge of the island and joining the Pará River estuary along the southern coast of Marajó Island, near Belém. The southernmost channel in Marajó Bay is used as the official endpoint of the Amazon River as it constitutes the longest distance from its source.

Where did the Amazon River start and end 100 million years ago?

Amazingly if you’d asked those questions 100 million years or so ago you would have gotten a completely different answer! The reason being the Amazon River has only been flowing out into the Atlantic Ocean since then. Before this period – before the Andes Mountains had even started to rise – the river actually flowed in the opposite direction. Scientists discovered this when they unearthed river sediment that should naturally be transported downstream but was found upstream in the Amazon River. This left only one explanation: the river used to flow in reverse.

The Amazon River remains a mystery to this day, baffling scientists from all over the world with its enormity and curious tendencies. In fact, just a few years ago, a team of scientists discovered an underground river around 4km beneath the Amazon River that runs for about the same length but in some parts is around four times wider.

Now you know where the Amazon River is located and where it starts and ends, the best way to truly find out about this remarkable river is to discover it for yourself in person, and navigate its mysterious waters on an Amazon River cruise.

Imagine a waterway so vast it seems to hold the secrets of the earth within its depths. The Amazon River, stretches across South America with such might and majesty that it commands awe and respect. It’s not just another river; it’s a lifeline for the world’s largest rainforest and an ecological treasure trove.

The  story of the Amazon  starts high in the misty peaks of Peru’s Andes Mountains. Here, at these dizzying heights, trickles form from melted snows to begin their long march eastward. As they converge and swell into larger streams—and eventually into one mighty flow—the river becomes a force unto itself. Winding through lush landscapes, past ancient trees whose roots grip tightly to rich soils teeming with life.

By feeding countless tributaries along its path before reaching  Brazil’s tropical embrace  where it spills grandly into the Atlantic Ocean—the journey is nothing short of epic.

The journey starts modestly, with meltwater from glaciers near Mount Misti overlooking the city of Arequipa. This is where our protagonist—a droplet destined for greatness—kicks off an adventure across South America. The water gains volume as it races down through gorges and valleys, collecting contributions from other eager tributaries along the way.

A bit further on, still gathering momentum in  Peru , it becomes known as the Apurímac River at first before donning the name ‘Amazonas’ after merging with several larger rivers such as Marañón and Ucayali. Now that’s teamwork.

As if seeking fame beyond local borders, this watery behemoth winds through Brazil but also takes brief detours to flirt with Colombia and even Venezuela before committing itself fully to Brazil again. Here’s where things get serious—the river widens so much you might forget you’re looking at fresh water rather than an inland sea.

The final act unfolds when our liquid lead hits Brazilian shores at Belém after meandering about 6,400 km (that’s nearly 4,000 miles). But wait—there’s more. The plot twist involves splitting into hundreds of paths creating an intricate delta before taking a bow by emptying into the Atlantic Ocean.

This isn’t just geography; it’s drama on an ecological scale.

Key Takeaway:

The Amazon River isn’t just massive; it’s a global lifeline that shapes weather patterns and supports rich biodiversity. Its journey from Andean peaks to the Atlantic is an ecological marvel, reminding us of our duty to preserve this natural wonder for future generations.

Slicing through South America like a green ribbon, this basin covers parts or all within nine nations’ borders: Brazil, Bolivia , Peru, Ecuador , Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname—and French Guiana—a testament to its massive reach—while influencing weather patterns far beyond those limits thanks largely due in part because clouds formed above are known worldwide for their rainfall contributions elsewhere too.

The mighty Amazon isn’t just a river ; it’s the lifeblood of an entire continent.

Think of Brazil as the main stage for the Amazonian symphony. Hosting around 60% of the rainforest within its borders, Brazil has become synonymous with Amazonian biodiversity. It’s where you’ll find not only bustling ports like Manaus but also serene stretches that have barely felt humanity’s footprint.

In Brazilian territory, local communities thrive on resources from manioc to rubber tapping – traditional practices that persist in modern times. This nation serves up raw adventure and culture in equal parts for any eager traveler looking to get lost in nature’s embrace.

Ecuador may be smaller yet packs quite a punch when it comes down to ecological richness—with Yasuni National Park being an outright superstar thanks largely due abundance wildlife calling place home including jaguars and pink dolphins alike.

  • Let’s not forget the overseas department of France, which encompasses a significant northeastern area.

Explore the Amazon River Basin and you’ll discover it’s not just a river but the pulse of South America, touching nine countries. Brazil dominates with 60% of the rainforest; Peru offers its origin story; Colombia and Ecuador burst with biodiversity; while Venezuela, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana add their own wild notes to this ecological symphony.

Think of the Amazon River as Mother Nature’s own kaleidoscope, where every twist and turn reveals a new shade of green. This vast river basin is an ecological patchwork quilt, stitching together some of Earth’s most varied habitats.

Varzea in the Amazon rainforest

The rainy season in the Amazon transforms large swathes of forest into aquatic wonderlands. The varzea, flooded by whitewater rivers, becomes a bustling hub for fish that thrive among submerged trees—a true buffet for predators like caimans and pink dolphins. Meanwhile, the igapo, drenched by blackwater systems, presents an eerier landscape with dark waters reflecting the ghostly silhouettes of drowned canopies.

You’ll find these seasonal shifts aren’t just fascinating; they’re critical to maintaining biodiversity. They let species like the infamous piranha spawn during high water periods when food is plentiful before retreating as waters recede.

Terra firme - researchgate

Beyond reach of annual floods lies terra firme—solid ground that houses towering hardwood giants and hosts symphonies orchestrated by howler monkeys each dawn. Here orchids cling to branches while jaguars prowl below—a testament to evolution’s creativity when left uninterrupted over millennia.

If you think wetlands are just soggy marshes, think again. Places like Brazil’s Pantanal are grand stages set for nature’s dramas where capybaras roam free amid endless fields dotted with termite mounds—and yes, those termites have their own role in this complex web.

Each environment within this lush matrix not only supports life but also underpins entire cultures relying on them—from indigenous tribes whose knowledge spans generations to modern scientists making breakthrough discoveries about our planet at places like Amazon Conservation research hubs .

Imagine a realm where biodiversity reigns supreme, where every leafy branch and murky waterway teems with life.

Squawking macaws paint the sky with vibrant hues while elusive jaguars prowl below, just a sample of the amazing birdlife in Amazonas . The Amazon Basin is home to one in ten known species on Earth , including both fearsome predators and curious critters like sloths who seem to have all the time in the world. Here, pink river dolphins break surface tension as they frolic—a sight so enchanting it feels plucked from mythology.

The cacophony of howler monkeys at dawn underscores this place’s raw vitality. They’re not just loud; their calls can be heard over three miles away, serving as nature’s alarm clock for those lucky enough to experience this wilderness firsthand. The waters of the river and it’s surrounding lakes are also home to the tame amazon manatee .

Victoria Regia Amazon

Beyond its animal inhabitants, plant life here doesn’t play second fiddle—take Victoria amazonica lily pads capable of supporting a small child’s weight or medicinal plants that local tribes have used for centuries. The rainforest canopy itself serves as an umbrella , shielding myriad forms beneath from intense sun rays or deluging rains.

This botanical treasure trove is more than meets the eye—it also plays guardian to our planet by storing vast amounts of carbon dioxide which helps keep global temperatures in check. Talk about flower power.

Symbiotic Relationships: Nature’s Intricate Web

Fascinating are also symbiotic relationships flourishing throughout this jungle—the fig trees relying on wasps for pollination being one example among countless others showing nature’s interconnectedness here is nothing short of magic woven into each interaction between flora and fauna alike.

Dive into the Amazon’s heart, where squawking macaws and stealthy jaguars reveal a world brimming with life. It’s not just about wildlife; giant lily pads and healing plants show off the rainforest’s botanical might. Plus, this green maze is our planet’s ally against climate change.

Encuentro de las Aguas

Picture the Amazon as a bustling water highway, with tributaries and affluents like countless roads feeding into an ever-moving metropolis. These are no mere streams; they’re vital arteries that keep the heart of South America’s ecosystem pumping.

The Marañón River is often touted as the principal source, winding down from Peruvian Andes. But let’s not forget its sibling rival for this title: The Ucayali River also makes a strong claim to fame. Together, they form a dynamic duo before joining forces with other heavyweights such as Madeira and Japurá rivers —each bringing their own unique blend of nutrients and life to this colossal basin.

It’s worth noting that when it comes to size, Madeira takes the cake by volume discharged. This titan among tributaries , running over 3,250 kilometers long (that’s about 2,020 miles), contributes around half of all sediments reaching the Atlantic from the Amazon.

We must also tip our hats to Rio Negro —the dark horse of this race—a river so rich in humic acid that it runs darker than your morning coffee. It creates a stark contrast against sandy-hued Solimões at their confluence near Manaus—an iconic sight known locally as ‘Encontro das Águas’ : the meeting of the waters .

In these vibrant veins flow stories untold; secrets whispered between caiman crocodiles or sung through bird calls under canopies lush beyond imagination. Every drop tells tales older than time itself—stories we’re only beginning to understand thanks to modern research shedding light on what lies beneath those murky depths.

If you’re itching for a travel experience that’s as rich in culture as it is in biodiversity, look no further than an Amazon River cruise . It’s not just about the destination but also how you get there. Imagine gliding along the world’s largest river, surrounded by a symphony of wildlife calls and the lush greenery of rainforests.

The Amazon offers various routes that cater to every type of explorer. The most popular ones will take you from vibrant Iquitos in Peru through remote areas where pink dolphins play hide and seek with your expectations. Or perhaps let Manaus in Brazil be your starting point —where urban life meets wild nature at its finest.

Your gateway into this watery wilderness comes via bustling ports like Santarém, where rivers meet and cultures blend seamlessly—a perfect snapshot of what awaits downstream. Every stopover introduces another layer to the intricate storybook that is South America.

When it comes to choosing your vessel, think beyond size or luxury; think character. Will it be a traditional riverboat – like La Amatista – echoing stories of old explorers? Or maybe something sleeker— Aqua Nera – a  modern cruiser fitted with panoramic windows designed for wildlife spotting? Either way, ensure comfort doesn’t sacrifice intimacy with nature because trust me; nothing beats waking up to toucans calling right outside your window.

So pack light but bring heaps of curiosity—it’s time to set sail on one epic tale. Remember though, this isn’t just any vacation; it’s an expedition into heartbeats and breaths taken away under canopies so vast they redefine infinity for all who walk below them.

Ready for an epic Amazon River cruise? Think pink dolphins, vibrant cultures, and lush rainforests. Choose a boat with character to match the adventure—where comfort meets close encounters with nature.

Pack light and let curiosity lead as you navigate from Iquitos or Manaus through vital ports like Santarém. It’s more than travel; it’s an expedition into the infinite wonders of South America.

couple in the Amazon

Picture yourself gliding through the heart of the rainforest, surrounded by a symphony of wildlife calls. That’s just your first taste of what awaits on an Amazon River adventure . Here’s a sneak peek at some experiences you can’t miss.

The Amazon is like nature’s megastore for biodiversity. While cruising downriver, keep your eyes peeled for pink river dolphins surfacing alongside your boat or capybaras lounging on the banks. The treetops are alive with colorful macaws; their squawks fill the air as they streak across the sky—a natural spectacle better than any fireworks show.

Nighttime brings its own magic when nocturnal creatures emerge. With luck, you might spot caimans—their eyes glowing in torchlight—or hear howler monkeys declaring their presence under starlit skies.

Docking at remote villages gives you rare access to indigenous communities where ancient traditions thrive unscathed by modern chaos. Through these interactions, visitors gain profound insights into local ways of life—fishing techniques passed down generations or stories that weave through time like threads in vibrant handwoven textiles.

Taste exotic fruits straight from trees and learn about medicinal plants used for centuries—it’s hands-on learning that beats any textbook.

Amazon cruises

Your vessel choice sets the tone: opt for luxury cruises with gourmet cuisine and panoramic suites or go rugged aboard smaller boats offering intimate connections with nature—and fellow adventurers. Each turn along this serpentine waterway presents opportunities to fish for piranha (talk about a catch.), kayak in tranquil tributaries , or simply soak up views from hammock-laden decks.

Remember: no two trips are alike because Mother Nature loves spontaneity as much as we do.

Embark on an Amazon River trip for a mix of wildlife encounters, cultural experiences, and cruising styles. Spot pink dolphins by day and caimans at night, immerse yourself in local traditions, and choose from luxury to rugged boats for your adventure.

When it comes to exploring the Amazon , you’ve got two prime options: kicking back on a river cruise or bunkering down in a jungle lodge . Each has its charm and set of perks that cater to different traveler vibes.

River Cruises: Gliding Through Nature's Arteries

A river cruise offers an all-inclusive window into the heart of the rainforest without sacrificing comfort. Picture this: sipping local brews on deck while pink dolphins play tag in the waters below. National Geographic highlights how these voyages give you front-row seats to some of nature’s greatest shows – from macaws painting the sky with color to capybaras chilling on the banks.

Cruising means mobility; each day brings new scenery and opportunities for adventure like piranha fishing or canopy walking.

If being grounded (literally) sounds more appealing, consider a lodge stay where nights are scored by symphonies of cicadas and mornings start with monkey calls. A lodge experience allows for deeper dives into local culture and ecosystems since you’re not just passing through — you’re living there, even if just for a few days.

You might miss out on covering as much ground as cruises offer but gaining intimate knowledge about one slice of paradise can be far more enriching than skimming many.

The real question is what floats your boat? For those looking for ease and elegance, river cruises have your name written across their bows. If getting up close with tarantulas before breakfast tickles your fancy then maybe opt for terra firma at a lodge instead.

So go ahead, choose your own adventure.

Exploring the Amazon? Cruise for comfort and a broad brush of beauty, or lodge to dive deep into the jungle’s heart.

River cruises glide you through breathtaking scenes with ease. Lodges offer an intimate date with nature and culture on solid ground.

The Amazon's Global Impact

Amazon River

It plays a critical role in regulating our planet’s water cycle by releasing up to 20 billion tons of water into the atmosphere every day through evaporation and transpiration, contributing significantly to global rainfall patterns.

This mighty river also acts like a giant air purifier; its vast rainforest serves as one of the world’s largest carbon sinks, soaking up immense amounts of greenhouse gases. But here’s where it gets even cooler: studies show that this region could be absorbing more carbon than we thought—acting like an ecological superhero in combat against climate change.

Moreover, let me paint you a picture—but with numbers because they’re just as vivid. The Amazon Basin holds about one-fifth of all fresh flowing water on the planet. Yes, that means if Mother Nature had bank accounts for her rivers, the Amazon would be sitting pretty at number one on Forbes’ list.

River Health Equals Earth’s Wealth

Beyond its sheer volume though is what this freshwater juggernaut does for us land-dwellers. Farmers from far-flung places rely heavily on weather systems generated by the forest-river combo meal that is unique to South America—their crops literally live off ‘Amazonian weather’ .

But wait—it gets juicier. If you fancy seafood or depend on ocean-based industries—you’ve got skin in this game too because when it empties into the Atlantic Ocean, nutrients from decomposed plant matter hitch along and are basically fast food for marine life near Brazil and beyond.

If we zoom out further—and I mean satellite view—we see how these massive transfers affect temperature regulation across our blue marble home—a sort-of thermostat keeping things chill (or warm) exactly where needed.

The Amazon River is Earth’s powerhouse, acting as a mega-hydrator and air purifier. It helps regulate the water cycle, affects global rainfall, and battles climate change by absorbing greenhouse gases. This river feeds weather systems that support agriculture far away and nourishes marine life when it meets the ocean.

In summing up why Voyagers Travel Company treasures this magnificent natural resource? It simply can’t be overstated how critical preserving what lies beneath those murky waters really is—not only locally but globally as well considering impacts felt around our planet today (and tomorrow). So when you set sail on your next adventure here remember: You’re witnessing history unfold each day spent cruising legendary waterways where wonders await discovery at every bend downstream…

The Amazon isn’t just South America’s treasure; its global impact can’t be overstated. Its breath powers our climate; its veins support our water cycle.

If  you are interested in visiting the Amazon rainforest basin, contact one of Voyagers Travel Advisors , they will help you plan a custom itinerary with pre and post visits to other South American travel highlights as well.

The Amazon River Travel Guide

Delfin - Amazon River Travel Guide

As one of the world’s most famous rivers, the Amazon River draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to enjoy the incredible river and the rainforest nourished by the nutrient-rich water.

Here, we will provide an Amazon River travel guide to help visitors know which sections of the river to visit and highlight some of the top Amazon River cruises, lodges, & tours.

We will focus here on the Amazon River cruises and some tours close to the Amazon River, which runs across the top of South America. For some more suggestions for the entire Amazon Basin, you can see our Amazon Rainforest travel guide .

Jump straight to the top Amazon River cruises & tours

But let’s first have an introduction to the Amazon River itself.

The Amazon River begins as trickles in the Andes high in the mountains of Peru and Ecuador. The river then flows across South America and into the Atlantic Ocean from its mouth near Belem in eastern Brazil.

During its voyage across the continent, the Amazon River passes different river ports in Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Brazil. It’s these ports that will be your gateways to the incredible Amazon River & Rainforest.

The Amazon River officially begins just west of Peru’s city of Iquitos with the merging of the Maranon and Ucayali River. However, if you class the larger Maranon as the same river then the Amazon begins in the Andes of southern Peru where the first trickles of a river that becomes the Amazon River start to form.

Your main entry points to visit the Amazon River to enjoy some fantastic Amazon River cruises and tours are Coca in Ecuador, Iquitos in northern Peru and Manaus in northern Brazil.

The Amazon River cruises head deep into areas of the Amazon Rainforest and some of the best tours focus on some of the Amazon’s best protected areas. While cruising these waters and heading out on guided expeditions from the main vessel, enjoy seeing a variety of Amazon wildlife, including pink river dolphins, different turtles, colorful toucans and macaws, black caiman crocodilians, and many different monkeys in the riverside forest.

The most wildlife has been found in the western side of the forest, such as the rainforest of Ecuador and Peru. However, Manaus in Brazil still offers some fantastic Amazon experiences.

Now, let’s go over an introduction to these three major Amazon River ports and gateways for an Amazonian experience.

Puerto Francisco de Orellana (Coca), Ecuador

Affectionately known as Coca, Puerto Francisco de Orellana is located in western Ecuador on the bank of the Napo River. This river flows into the Amazon River after crossing into Peru.

With a population of around 50,000 people, Coca is regarded as a smaller gateway town to experience the Amazon River and Rainforest. This means less of the surrounding rainforest has been degraded by human activity.

Flowing along the border of the Yasuni National Park, the Napo River is an excellent way to access one of the most most wildlife-rich areas of the entire Amazon Rainforest. There are many different cruises and tours that start from Coca to take on on fantastic expeditions to see many different monkeys, a range of colorful birds, and magnificent sights.

Anakonda Cruise Tour - Amazon River Travel

From Coca, enjoy some luxurious lodges, adventurous rainforest experiences, and cruises into the Yasuni National Park. Climb tall canopy towers to see over the rainforest and to spot colorful birds and butterflies, visit the Yasuni clay lick to see different parrots and parakeets visiting the medicinal clay, canoe lakes and tributaries, and walk and hike the protected areas to see a range of fantastic Amazon Rainforest animals and plants.

Iquitos, Peru

Iquitos sits in northern Peru as a port of the Amazon River. This is the world’s largest city unconnected to any other by road and is the largest city in the Peruvian Amazon.

From Iquitos, you can visit a few different protected areas of the Amazon River & Rainforest. There are some fantastic river cruises, rainforest lodges, and excursions from Iquitos to take you deep into this incredible forest.

With a population of 50,000 people, Iquitos is a much larger gateway than Coca in Ecuador, but still considerably smaller than Manaus, which we will mention later. Because this is a larger city, you will have to travel farther from Iquitos city itself to see some incredible wildlife-rich sections of forest.

Delfin II Tour - Amazon River Travel

When you travel more than 100 km from Iquitos, the animals and plants you can see are nothing short of incredible. Enjoy spotting two different sloths, colorful toucans, parrots, cotingas, and tanagers, pink river dolphins, and many different reptiles, amphibians, and monkeys. The monkeys you can see include howler monkeys, sakis, capuchins, tamarins, titi monkeys, and marmosets.

The main protected areas to visit from Iquitos are the flooded Pacaya Samiria National Reserve and the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve. However, there is also the small Allpahuayo Mishana National Reserve very close to the city itself.

Manaus, Brazil

As the largest city in the Amazon Rainforest, because of its size the city of Manaus is one of the main entry points to Amazonia. However, because of its size it also means you must travel very far from the gateway town to see undisturbed rainforest where you can spot many different animals and plants.

Manaus itself is a fascinating city to explore, as during the rubber boom the rubber barons displayed their vast wealth as exuberant mansions decorated with the world’s finest materials. As a symbol of prosperity, a main building in Manaus is the Amazon Theater, which was decorated with Italian marble and French stained glass windows.

We especially recommend some of the cruises from Manaus, which will take you into the rainforest of the Amazon and Rio Negro. Enjoy seeing a range of Amazonian wildlife, such as colorful birds, monkeys, and tall emergent trees.

Amazon River Attractions

Although the Amazon River and Rainforest itself is the attraction to this area of South America, there are some specific attractions to be found in the region. These include specific areas to catch sight of certain animals, manmade structures to better appreciation the area, and specific tours that offer something a little different.

Clay licks are areas where different animals come to feed on certain areas of exposed clay. The animals do this to obtain compounds that helps neutralize toxins found in their diet and also to obtain salts, which is often hard to find in the rainforest.

For you, these areas mean almost guaranteed wildlife spectacles to see some of the most iconic animals of Amazonia. However, note that that majority of clay licks in the Amazon Rainforest are found from Puerto Maldonado in southern Peru . In the northern Amazon near the Amazon River, the clay licks are rarely encountered but there are a few known areas.

Although there are few known clay licks along the Amazon River itself, in the rainforest of Ecuador from the jungle gateway town of Coca you can visit the small Yasuni clay lick in the Yasuni National Park. Many rainforest cruises and lodges for the Yasuni National Park visit the small clay licks here, such as the Manatee Amazon Cruise and La Selva Lodge.

Canopy Towers

Canopy towers are fantastic places to see over the rainforest canopy and simply gaze at the beautiful shades of green complimented by the brilliant blue sky. Not only great for simply appreciating the canopy, canopy towers allow some great chances to spot various toucans, parrots, and other colorful birds flying over the rainforest. You can even see troops of monkeys moving through the trees.

Although there are many canopy towers found throughout the rainforest at various Amazon Rainforest lodges, which you can find on our Amazon Rainforest travel guide or see the Puerto Maldonado travel guide for the rainforest of southern Peru, there are a few places located close to the Amazon River itself.

A great place in the northern Amazon near the Amazon River to enjoy canopy towers is from the rainforest gateway town of Coca in eastern Ecuador. The different Amazon cruises, such as the Anakonda and Manatee visit a rainforest canopy tower. In addition to these cruises, the community-owned Napo Wildlife Center and Sani Lodge have a tall canopy tower as well as the luxury-class La Selva Lodge. All of these areas located in Ecuador’s Amazon Rainforest along the Napo River, which later merges with the mighty Amazon River.

Canopy Zipline or Canopy Walkway

Aside from the canopy towers, there are some other ways you can experience the incredible canopy environment of the Amazon Rainforest on tours closer to the Amazon River than other tours in South America.

The canopy environment has revealed an incredible diversity of animals and plants that live their entire lives far away from the forest floor. As you will usually be walking on the forest floor, it’s a great experience to ascend into the canopy and experience life in the treetops.

Providing two alternative ways of exploring the canopy aside from the canopy towers mentioned above, you can choose the canopy zipline or the canopy walkway.

Like the canopy towers mentioned above, the canopy walkway is located in the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest at the Sacha Lodge . This is a fantastic lodge for wildlife lovers, and given the facilities for nature observation, it’s a much-loved lodge for birdwatchers.

One of the largest canopy zipline systems in the Amazon Rainforest can be found at the highly regarded Tahuayo Lodge , which is one of the top Amazon Rainforest & River tours from Iquitos in northern Peru. From the Tahuayo Lodge , enjoy two fantastic jungle lodges for the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve to see a high range of rainforest wildlife, including colorful birds, several different monkeys, and much more on a privately guided custom tour of Amazonia.

Delfin II, Iquitos, Peru - Amazon River Travel

Luxury Cruises

Luxury Amazon cruises provide their own attraction on the Amazon River. Enjoy comfortable and spacious suites, gourmet cuisine, elegant relaxation areas, and some of the best guided tours of the Amazon River and Rainforest.

The Amazon River tours from Iquitos in northern Peru are some of the top recommendations. For example, the Delfin I offers an experience more similar to a luxurious floating boutique hotel than a rea. With only four oversized suites, the Delfin I offers one of the most exclusive and luxurious tours of the Amazon River. Two of these fantastic suites also include your own private whirlpool to relax while being escorted deep into Amazonia.

We will mention more about the luxury cruises farther down.

Primate Research Grid

To offer one suggestion for a great place to see several different monkeys, in the northern Peruvian amazon sits a primate grid behind the Tahuayo River Amazon Research Center. The Tahuayo Lodge , which is an Amazon tour from Iquitos in northern Peru, offers tours of their 1,000 acre primate research grid as part of the usual 8-day Amazon tour. However, you can also visit the research grid on tours of 6-days.

The research grid and center was a joint initiative between the Tahuayo Lodge and a number of academic and scientific institutions. One of the objectives was to study Amazon Rainforest life and specifically to study the primates of the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve.

Enjoy walking the primate research grid with your private guide from the Tahuayo Lodge to spot howler monkeys, capuchins, squirrel monkeys, tamarins, titi monkeys, and pygmy marmosets. In addition to the monkeys, you can spot a range of other animals and plants. The reserve is located just off the Amazon River down a tributary called the Rio Tahuayo about 150 km from Iquitos in northern Peru.

Rubber Boom Cities

The rubber boom cities themselves offer a fantastic attraction in the Amazon Rainforest. The rubber boom that grew the cities of Iquitos, Manaus, and Belem has decorated the streets with the old mansions of rubber barons that decorated their homes with the world’s finest materials.

Certain buildings of the rubber boom cities have some spectacular stories, such as particular mansions, the Amazon Theater in Manaus built as a symbol of prosperity, or the Iron House in Iquitos, Peru. The Iron House for example was seen by a wealthy robber baron in Paris, France, at an architectural exhibition and was then shipped all the way to the Amazon Rainforest. It now stands in Iquitos, Peru, as a restaurant overlooking the Plaza de Armas.

The Best Time to Visit the Amazon River

As the Amazon River almost reaches from one side of South America to the other, choosing the best time to visit does depend on where in particular you are planning on seeing. However, the differences will not be much. Below, we will provide some graphics to illustrate the temperature, rainfall, and the best times for wildlife viewing for Iquitos in Peru and Manaus in Brazil to offer a summary guide for the Amazon River.

Note that the main temperature difference no matter where you visit along the Amazon River is from morning to evening. Because this is a tropical region with no distinguishable seasons, the temperature is similar from month to month.

No matter where you choose along the Amazon River from Ecuador to Brazil, the main differences between months will be whether the months falls in a drier part of the year or a wetter part of you year. But there will still be some showers no matter when you visit and the rainforest of Iquitos for example doesn’t even have an official ‘dry season’.

The Top 5 Amazon River Wildlife Sightings

The Amazon River nourishes the world’s largest cradle of animals and plants. The Amazon Rainforest itself stretches across 40% of the continent and contains an incredible diversity of wildlife.

Woolly Monkey, Tahuayo Lodge, Iquitos, Peru - Amazon River Travel

While on river cruises or staying at wildlife lodges near the Amazon River itself, there are are few different animals and plants you have a higher chance of spotting than in other areas of Amazonia.

Here is a list of animals you are likely to spot on tours near to the Amazon River. Note the wildlife is at its most diverse in the western Amazon of Ecuador and Peru.

Pink River Dolphins

Rainforest monkeys, macaw parrots, giant otters, amazon river culture & communities.

There are many different communities that live along the Amazon River. The groups are often descendants of ancestral tribal communities mixed with Spanish colonists and international migrants who were attracted by the timber industry, oil, or as far back as the rubber boom that drew entrepreneurs and businessmen the world over to make their fortune in the jungle.

In Peru, the communities that live along the Amazon River are called ribereños. They live on small scale agriculture, fishing, and often visit the Amazon cities once or twice a month to sell their produce. You will no doubt see the different communities moving up and down the river in their dugout canoes or small motorised boats.

Protected Areas of the Amazon River

Protected areas of the Amazon Basin are often the best choice to see the highest diversity of animals and plants. As the forest is protected from extractive use, the different reserves and national parks provide a way to see the rainforest and river before the arrival of outsiders. When you visit these areas, the wildlife is incredible and it’s as if you have chanced upon a living Eden.

Some of the favorite protected areas to visit near to the Amazon River include:

The Yasuni National Park, Ecuador

Accessed from Coca, the jewel in the crown of the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest isthe Yasuni National Park. The park contains one of the world’s highest levels of animals and plants. There are different ways to explore the Yasuni National Park, including rainforest lodges, river cruises, and luxury Amazon Rainforest lodges.

Rarely found in the northern Amazon Rainforest, within the Yasuni National Park you can find the Yasuni clay lick. The clay lick provides almost guaranteed sightings of colorful parakeets and parrots. The Yasuni national Park is also a great place to spot several different monkeys, colorful birds, caiman crocodiles, beautiful butterflies, and delicate amphibians.

The Yasuni National Park itself covers around 1 million hectares of UNESCO listed rainforest. The park is where different world records for species richness have been set and there are some fantastic ways to explore the rainforest from the lodges and cruises that you can enjoy. Climb canopy towers, canoe and kayak the waterways, enjoy guided rainforest walks, and even relax with a massage at the incredible La Selva Lodge & Spa .

The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, Peru

The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is one of the most beautiful sections of rainforest along the Amazon River. The flooded nature of the reserve has creates some incredible scenery. Known as the forest of mirrors, enjoy seeing the forest and river almost perfectly reflected in the nutrient-rich water.

You can reach the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve from Iquitos in northern Peru. As this is a very large protected area extending across 2 million hectares, we recommend a cruise of the reserve to have the most indepth experience.

Pacaya Samiria Reserve, Delfin II Luxury Cruise, Iquitos, Peru

Some of the top cruises in the Amazon Rainforest explore the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. On guided expeditions, see some incredible Amazon Rainforest animals and plants. Your guides will help you spot several different monkeys, such as howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, capuchins, marmosets, and tamarins. You are also likely to see the mysterious pink river dolphins, caiman lizards, black caiman while night spotting for animals, delicate tree frogs, iguanas, and some beautiful birds. Flying over the river and in the rainforest trees, you’re likely to see macaws, toucans, cotingas, tanagers, and more.

The Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve, Peru

The Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve is in an area of connected rainforest with the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve mentioned above. The Tahuayo Reserve contains a higher fraction of higher ground forest and is a preferred choice for rainforest walks and exploring deep rainforest on foot.

The Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve was founded for community incentives and to help protect the habitat of the rare uakari monkeys, which are a strange-looking monkey with a bright red face.

Within and close to the reserve, you can find a poison dart frog conservation area, the largest canopy zipline in Amazonia, a research center with a 1,000 acre primate research grid that you can explore, and the Tahuayo Lodge . This is one of the highest rated lodges in the rainforest and provides custom itineraries and private guides as standard. On tours from 6-days or more, explore both the research center and Tahuayo Lodge for some incredible guided tours of the Amazon Rainforest.

The Anavilhanas National Park, Brazil

Another area of rainforest along the Amazon River, the Anavilhanas National Park is part of the largest protected area of Amazon Rainforest. Enjoy exploring the hundreds of different islands and rainforest aboard different river cruises from Manaus in northern Brazil.

The Anavilhanas National Park covers 350,470 hectares of tropical forest and waterways. The protected area itself is located in the lower Rio Negro, which is the largest tributary of the Amazon River.

A recommended cruise to explore the protected area and surrounding rainforest is the Tucano Cruise , which is styled as a traditional steamboat and takes you on guided walking tours and skiff expeditions throughout the area. With professional naturalist guides, head out into the rainforest to find several different monkeys, the famous river dolphins, and a diversity of Amazonian birds.

Amazon River

The Amazon River, which is the largest river in the world based on volume of water discharged, winds its way across South America through the Amazon Rainforest. The Amazon River and Rainforest are home to more than a third of all known animal species, many of which you'll spot from the deck of your river ship. Amazon River cruise packages typically feature a short cruise along the Peruvian section of the river, with daily guided sightseeing tours, accompanied by an extensive land program. Featured below are some of the highlights you can experience when cruising the Amazon River and touring the nearby regions of South America:

Machu Picchu in Peru

  • Explore Machu Picchu with the help of a local guide. Located high above the surrounding jungles, Machu Picchu wasn't "rediscovered" until 1911, but many mysteries still remain for you to discover.
  • Head to the Manatee Rescue Center in Iquitos, Peru to learn about (and feed!) endangered Amazon manatees. Find out what you can do to aid in the conservationists' efforts to protect these peaceful creatures.

Amazon River Spider Monkey

  • Cruise along the Amazon River while an expert guide identifies some of the surrounding wildlife, including monkeys, sloths, lizards and birds. For certain excursions you'll board a smaller craft to head further up the river's extensive tributaries to visit local villages.
  • Visit Yacapana, the "Isle of the Iguanas," to walk amongst these incredible reptiles. You could even go fishing for piranhas before enjoying some Peruvian cocktails.

Sacsayhuaman Ruins in Cusco, Peru

  • Tour the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Cusco, Peru. During the day you can visit the Incan Temple of Sacsayhuaman, a stone fortress perched on a hill, or Kenko, an ancient site for public ceremonies, and possibly sacrifices.
  • Enjoy a Peruvian Paso horse show where you will learn how horses are bred and trained to handle the steep and terraced terrain of Peru.

Connect with nature on an Amazonian adventure along the vast Amazon River. You'll be immersed in cultures unlike any other and discover species of plants and animals not found anywhere else in the world. Contact our river cruise experts to start planning your Amazon River cruise.

Setting a new standard of luxury river cruising in the Amazon, each Aqua Nera small ship cruise is inspired by the Peruvian Amazon’s mystical blackwater lagoons and convey a sense of Amazon tranquility, refined elegance and a touch of drama. Aboard Aqua Nera, explore winding jungle tributaries; stop at remote villages to meet locals; stargaze from the peaceful deck; and search for wildlife life caimans, tree frogs, pink river dolphins, hundreds of bird species and breathtaking flora.

Cruise along three powerful Amazon tributaries: the Marañón, Ucayali and Pacaya Rivers as well as several hidden black water lakes in both high-water and low-water seasons. Stretch your legs with exciting jungle walks, test your skills fishing for piranhas, and take skiff rides into the depths of the mysterious Amazon jungle.

Two main seasons influence the Peruvian Amazon River: a high-water season (November through May) and a low-water season (June through October). Traveling to Peru in either season offers rich rewards, fabulous sites and amazing opportunities to view plant and animal life, but note that only high-water routes cruise along the Amazon River. The Aqua Nera sails year-round and every voyage is uniquely appealing, based on the changing seasons. During the high-water season the river and estuaries grow, allowing launch boats to venture deeper into the flooded forest. During the low-water season the river recedes and beautiful sandy river beaches form.

Cruise aboard the modern Aqua Nera , a classy Amazon riverboat. Enjoy her crew’s attentive care and her comfortable spaces. This vessel is an AdventureSmith favorite for private  charter cruises  due to her mix of jungle decor and modern feel, plus her intimate size.

The Aqua Nera Amazon River cruise operates an 8-day, 5-day and 4-day cruise, departing Saturdays and Tuesdays, to provide the Amazon experience that is best for you. Note that itineraries are subject to changes to accommodate the variable water levels for the different seasons.

Hear It from Travelers Who Have Explored with Us

After traveling where I was changing hotels every day or so, I wanted a relaxing close to my trip. Aqua Nera was perfect.

The Amazon has always been a bucket list item for me. This trip was the most comfortable and extensive way to experience all the spectacle and grandeur of this piece of our planet. Strolling and bicycling through quiet riverside villages, walking along paths deep in the forest with both cruise guides and local guides, or traveling deep into the flooded tributaries of the main rivers was deeply satisfying to me as a lover of nature.

We have traveled extensively and enjoyed many cruises but this cruise on the Aqua Nera was by far the most attentive and delightful cruise we have experienced.

The Aqua Nera crew made the trip. They were attentive, food was delicious and looked for ways to delight the guests. Many lovely touches along the way like little gifts left in the stateroom. After traveling where I was changing hotels every day or so, I wanted a relaxing close to my trip. Aqua Nera was perfect.

Itinerary Review

Seeing the wildlife was the highlight of the trip. Would have liked to walk more.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Lauren Pilholski was very helpful with clarifying flights and setting expectations. I was appreciative of her diligent follow up.

The Amazon has always been a bucket list trip for me.

Accommodations Review

I did a lot of research about what boat to use for this trip. The Aqua Nera was the most costly but I am SO glad I chose to travel on her. The onboard details were exquisite and the cabin large and very comfortable. It met my expectations in every way, and then some. The public areas on the boat were sumptuous and quiet. The dining area was open and flooded with light.

Meals Review

I really loved the food onboard. The breakfast buffets were varied and I loved the fact that they featured numerous indigenous Peruvian dishes. The chef and kitchen team were friendly and loved me asking questions about their cuisine and its preparation. The lunch and supper menus were exciting and delicious. I enjoyed finding out what was next as the servers presented each course.

Traveling on all three of the rivers was wonderful (Amazon, Ucayali, and Maranon). Each was different. The excursions by foot, speed boat, and canoe were well-planned and spectacular. I loved visiting the schools and small villages, as well as the city tour of Iquitos. I enjoyed wandering the port city of Iquitos. The whole destination...well, it was the Amazon. That's all I really have to say. Magical.

Crew & Guides Review

The two guides, Julio and Eddie, were extremely knowledgeable regarding the biodiversity of the area. Juliana the director was always available.  However the entire crew, both in front and behind the scenes were courteous and kind. I loved the quiet moments one-on-one with a deck hand or driver or kitchen staff as I practiced my Spanish with them.

Fellow Passengers Review

Aqua Expeditions offers three itineraries - a three day, a four day, or a seven day combo of the other two so guests changed half way through the cruise. Taking the longer of the cruises, I got to meet and get to know everyone. All were seasoned travelers and appreciated what a special place it was that we were seeing.

Leslie...you're the BEST!

Traveler Advice

Prepare yourself to be wowed. The three river system is glorious and the Aqua Nera is a wonderful way to see it.

The cabins were spacious and very comfortable. The ship's crew was excellent. The service was attentive and the food and drinks were all perfectly prepared, interesting menus and simply wonderful.

The quality and the selection as well as the innovative preparation was excellent.

The Peruvian Amazon is an amazing place. Pristine, unspoiled by large industry and logging which allows the small villages and the waterways to flourish in their traditional lifestyles. I was concerned about going because I don't like bugs, was afraid of the mosquito issues and I also don't enjoy the heat but we were prepared with long sleeves and pant legs, bug nets for our jungle walks and did not experience any problems at all.

Galia was the tour director and the two guides Alex and Julio were beyond reproach. We loved them and felt a genuine appreciation for their knowledge as well as their concern for us as guests.

We were delighted with the other guests.

Leslie responded immediately whenever I had any questions or special concerns. All was perfectly in order so that we had noting to worry about.

Be prepared with long shirts, pants and hats and pre-treat your clothing with insect repellent prior to the trip. We strongly recommend Aqua Expeditions for cruises in the future.

The mighty Amazon River is home to 2.5 million square miles of rainforest—one of the earth's largest and most intact wildernesses. Aboard the luxury yacht Aria Amazon or Aqua Nera, you'll explore its many wonders as you journey in style along the Ucayali and Marañon rivers, the two largest tributaries of the Amazon, and through the remote Pacaya Samiria National Park and Reserve, set deep within the rainforest at the headwaters of the Amazon. This vast wetland reserve is a haven for Amazonian flora and fauna, a world filled with birds in neon-bright colors, playful monkeys, graceful hawks and herons, and millions of butterflies. As you cruise along, you'll try your hand at fishing for piranha, visit riverside communities to witness their culture and traditions, learn about the area's conservation and sustainability projects, and enjoy night excursions by skiff under a canopy of sparkling stars. There are two seasons in the Amazon: low water (June to November) and high water (December to May). Each season offers extraordinary experiences of the Amazon.

Conditions along the Amazon River in Peru divide into two seasons: a high water season from December through May and a low water season that lasts from June until November. Cruising the Amazon in either season promises rich rewards with breathtaking opportunities to view and photograph magnificent plant and animal life unlike anywhere else on earth.

If seeing the glorious Amazon rainforest at its lushest and getting up close to lots of birds and mammals (and enjoying slightly cooler temperatures) sounds most attractive, then December to May might be your best choice. If jungle hikes and spotting exotic migratory birds perched on trees between flights across Amazonia appeals most to you, while still having the chance to see capuchin monkeys, kinkajou, and other mammals, and going on great fishing expeditions, you might be happier choosing the warmer, low water season.

Weather in this region of the Amazon remains generally warm with some rainfall even during low water season. In fact, despite being the "rainy" season, during the high water months, the Amazon only gets about 10% more rain than in the low water season. So, as you choose the time of your cruise on the Amazon River (in either season), we suggest you consider the following three key points:

  • Some rain will fall in whichever season you choose. This is the Amazon Rainforest.
  • You will see spectacular Amazon wildlife, birds and plant life any time of year on the Amazon.
  • In either season, you will definitely see the Amazon River's rare pink dolphins.

The Amazon basin is as lush and green as it is because it gets an abundance of rain -- 12 feet a year on average. In a typical year, the Amazon River rainforest experiences 200 rainy days, which means that there will be days of rain even in the low water season. However it rarely rains all day. Rain most often falls in passing cloudbursts, which allow the vessel to coordinate excursions accordingly. When it does rain, you are provided sturdy ponchos to ensure you stay extremely comfortable so you can focus on the astonishing Amazon jungle scenery.

High Water Season on the Amazon: December Through May

Peru's rainy season runs from December through May, which is summer and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. This is the relatively cooler and wetter season when the Amazon region receives more than half (60%) of its total annual rainfall. During the high water season, the average temperature is 86°F, only 12°F cooler than in the average low water season. Benefits of visiting Peru's Amazon at this time of year include the dramatic high water panorama. The Amazon Basin's rivers and streams rise about 23 feet higher than during the low water season. Aside from the striking visual effect, this also means that every river, creek, and lake is navigable. Thus, the ship's tenders are able to cruise further along the wildlife-rich waterways of Amazonia and bring guests up close to more plants and Amazon animals than during the low water season. Flooded waterways carry you significantly deeper by water into the Amazon jungle canopy, where the kaleidoscope of Amazon birds flutter about. Although the odds of sighting wildlife do not change significantly between the two seasons, you are likely to see more of some Amazon wildlife favorites such as monkeys, turtles, and caimans during the high water months. Enhanced navigation by water has a flip side -- areas to walk and trek become less accessible at this time of year. When you do find usable hiking trails, so will the mosquitoes that are more prevalent now than during the low water season. Fishing in the Amazon River is actually more limited during these high water months too, but you still have close to a 50/50 chance to reel in a memorable catch.

Low Water Season on the Amazon: June through November

Low water season in Amazonia coincides with winter in the Southern Hemisphere, from June to November. This is the warmer season on the Amazon River, with temperatures averaging about 98°F. Despite its name, the low water season still exhibits some heavy rains. A key difference between visiting the Amazon in low water season vs. high water season is you are able to access the jungle trails that get flooded from December to May, allowing you to follow your naturalists and local Amazonia guides deeper into the jungle by foot, and accompanied by fewer mosquitoes than during the high water season. Guests also tend to spot an even greater abundance of migratory birds in flight during the low water season. However, the trade-off at this time of year is that water levels on the Amazon River and its tributaries drop much lower from June to November, which means that many of the creeks and lakes that we visit by tender during the rainy season are now inaccessible. Lower water levels do offer a bonus: good fishing is 100% guaranteed, you even stand a fair chance to catch a piranha.

The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Danube river cruises: an ultimate guide to cruising Budapest and beyond

Why, when and how to sail along Europe’s second-longest river, which meanders through the likes of Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest

Its banks are lined with dramatic, unspoiled landscapes, postcard-perfect towns and villages, and grand, opulent cities . Take a river cruise down this majestic river and you’ll encounter some of the world’s most stunning countryside, including the UNESCO-protected Wachau Valley, along with an array of fascinating cultures.

Cruising Europe’s waterways is a great way to see more of the region in a short period of time than you might do by land, and a river cruise can be the ideal introduction to cruise holidays for first-timers.

While ships are smaller than those traversing across oceans, river cruise itineraries often feature big-name guests onboard – as is the case with our seven-night sailing along the Danube , when one of the UK's best-loved historians, Lucy Worsley (pictured below), joins guests on a private visit to Vienna’s Royal Lipizzaner Stables and Spanish Riding School.

What is the best time of year to cruise the Danube River?

The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded. Because of that, we recommend taking a Danube river cruise in April, May, September and October. Good Housekeeping's seven-night itinerary sails in September, when the weather should still be balmy and dry, but the summer hordes have gone home.

Where does a Danube river cruise start and end?

The Danube either flows through or delineates part of the border of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Many cruises traverse the stretch between the capital cities of Vienna, Austria and Budapest , Hungary, starting or ending at either location.

Our seven-night Danube river cruise with Lucy Worsley departs from the city of Engelhartszell in Austria before calling at Vienna (pictured below), the pretty town of Esztergom in Hungary and Budapest. You'll then loop back down the river, calling at Slovakia's capital Bratislava and the Wachau Valley in Austria before returning to Engelhartszell.

austria, vienna, hofburg, michaelplatz

Is a Danube river cruise worth it?

Absolutely! If you love dazzling landscapes, magnificent architecture and fabulous food, a Danube river cruise is hard to beat. Exploring Europe by water requires no internal flights and train rides and eliminates schlepping around with your luggage in tow.

On a river cruise, you can discover multiple destinations – and even get to the heart of them with a guided tour, should you wish – in just one trip, all the while returning to the same luxurious stateroom and comfy bed each night.

What are the best things to do on a Danube river cruise?

One of the highlights of any Danube cruise is the Austrian capital, Vienna, with its musical heritage, imperial palaces, array of art museums, stunning Lipizzaner stallions, and delectable cuisine (a slice of Sachertorte chocolate cake is a must when in town!).

Secondly, Budapest, the capital of Hungary, boasts breath-taking architecture as well as historic thermal baths (pictured above), while Bratislava shouldn’t be overlooked with its lively 18th-century Old Town and impressive reconstructed hilltop castle from which you can look down over it.

Other hotspots along the Danube include the verdant Wachau Valley in Austria, which tumbles down to the riverbanks; and medieval Esztergom, Hungary’s former capital, which is home to the country’s largest church, Esztergom Basilica.

And that’s all without mentioning the entertainment and facilities onboard your ship. Join us on our seven-night Danube cruise and you’ll sail aboard A-ROSA FLORA, which boasts an onboard spa offering beauty and body treatments, gym, spacious sun deck, heated outdoor pool, outdoor restaurant with canopy top, bar and dancefloor, lounges and plenty of evening fun.

the largest medicinal bath in europe, the szechenyi thermal bath dates from the late 19th century

Which cruise lines offer Danube river cruises?

Among the companies offering cruises along the Danube are A-ROSA Cruises , with whom we have partnered to bring you our remarkable river cruise . A-ROSA has 20-plus years of experience in sailing couples, families, groups and solo travellers along some of Europe’s loveliest rivers in laidback style, giving you lots of freedom to explore port stops at your own pace.

How much does it cost to cruise the Danube?

Danube cruises can be great value, with our cruise through Austria, Hungary and Slovakia starting just over £2,000 per person for a week. All meals and drinks, including sparkling wines and cocktails, are included, as are snacks and afternoon tea. Also included is the use of the sauna, gym and top-deck heated swimming pool. You'll also get 15% off treatments in the onboard spa.

Sail the Danube and visit Vienna's famous riding school with Lucy Worsley in September 2024.
