It’s sometimes barely believable that Greece exists, but it does! And the best part? It’s absolutely massive, and there’s so much to explore. 

Different Greek islands do different things, so if you’re making the trip, you should first figure out what kind of holiday you’re after. Are you looking for something beachy, nature-y or a bit more cosmopolitan? 1.  Athens

Obviously, if you’ve heard anything about Greece, you know about its beautiful capital Athens. Athens is that perfect mix of traditional but trendy, ancient but modern, full of nature but cosmopolitan at the very same time. Here you’ll find huge, open roads covered in restaurants and bars, but coming off them are tiny little cobbled side streets to explore. Old buildings give way to fascinating galleries. You can grab an ouzo and pitch up at a beautiful outdoor cinema, looking up at the stars. Plus you’ve simply got to see the Parthenon at least once in your life. Athens is a sprawling, incomparable beauty that is like no other. Add it to your bucket list.

2.  Aegina

A little over an hour away from the port of Piraeus, the island of Aegina is the closest to the Greek capital and a popular destination for tourists and locals. In 1827, after the Greek Independence War had ended, it served as the first capital of the newly founded Greek state for a while. Today, the island is mostly famous for pistachios, chock-a-block full of pistachio trees, and thought to be the best in the world for the stuff. It’s worth visiting the famous Aphea Temple, dedicated to goddess Athena, the Saint Nektarios Monastery and the nearby uninhabited Islet of Moni, where wild peacocks and deer stroll uninterrupted. 

3.  Crete

You’ll need a car to explore Greece’s biggest island, but if you’re after golden beaches, crumbly old towns, world-class museums and UNESCO Heritage sites,  Crete  ticks every box. Chania in the west is the liveliest part of the island, while Sitia in the east is famed for its pristine coves and sandy beaches – a perfect rural and picturesque escape. Nature seekers could hike Samaria, Europe’s longest gorge, culture hunters should track down the Minoan palaces, and kids are guaranteed a good time at the island’s countless waterparks.

Why go?  Much more than just an all-inclusive beach holiday hotspot, Crete is a mish-mash of fabulous stuff to see, do, eat and drink.

4.  Santorini

The scenery in  Santorini , one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea, seems crafted by the Greek gods: whitewashed villages crown the island with views over its majestic coastlines, rural vineyards span huge stretches inland and the beaches are black, red, and out of this world. There’s a ridiculous amount for explorers, foodies and culture vultures to discover, from archaeological sites to swimming spots and brilliant wine and food. And trust us: this place is  even  more beautiful IRL than it looks on the ’gram.

5.  Zakynthos

Better known as Zante, Zakynthos draws a party-ready crowd to its notorious Laganas nightlife strip, but this sunstruck Ionian isle – known by the Venetians as ‘the flower of the East’ – is also blessed with some of the Med’s most beautiful scenery. This includes the spectacular Shipwreck Beach, whose bright-blue waters hemmed in by sheer white cliffs can only be reached by boat, and Zakynthos Marine Park, home to slippery seals and savvy turtles. It’s truly wild – in multiple senses of the word.

6.  Tinos

Famous for its carved marble-fronted buildings – and, increasingly, its burgeoning food scene – Tinos is yet another jewel in the Cyclades archipelago. To get there, you’ll need to fly to Mykonos and catch a ferry. It’s worth the journey: some of the best Greek wines are produced here, and chefs from all over Europe have opened restaurants among its sage-scented hills. Most are situated in the main town of Chora – we recommend the traditional Greek menu at Thalassaki.

7.  Naxos

The largest of the Cyclades islands, Naxos is also one of the least explored – which means you can expect secluded sandy beaches and a low-key, laidback atmosphere that’ll make the pressures of everyday life feel worlds away. Packing an incredible amount of variety into an incredibly small space, this is a place where you can venture up into tiny high-flung mountain villages or laze on an endless chain of silky sand beaches away from the madding tourist crowds.

8.  Corfu

Italianate villages, ornate palaces and romantic beaches are on the cards if you visit the lush island where the Durrell family once lived. With its sundry influences left by past invaders,  Corfu  is a place where you can drink ginger ale with your Greek salad, stroll streets packed with Byzantine and Venetian architecture and meet modern-day monks in Paleokastritsa’s spectacular medieval monastery. And after a hard day’s sightseeing and stuffing your face, you’ll obviously want to jump straight into the Ionian Sea – never not a stunning shade of turquoise blue.

9.  Rhodes

Way back when – and we’re talking way, way back –  Rhodes  was home to the Colossus, one of the world’s Seven Wonders. An earthquake may have destroyed that ol’ thing in 226BBC, but the island’s Unesco world heritage-classed old town is still steeped in charm and history – thanks to a series of dazzling topsy-turvy medieval inns and fourteenth-century knight’s houses that stand to this day. Head outside the city, and the mountain villages and cliff-top towns you’ll come across are just as magical as any fairytale location. And with plenty of chic shops, decent restaurants and lively bars, you’re guaranteed some modern magic, too.

10.  Kastellorizo

At the edge of Greece, right opposite the Turkish coastal town of Kaş, you'll find Kastellorizo (aka Megisti), the island furthest from the Greek capital. It's a flight or a boat ride away from the island of Rhodes in Dodecanese, and though it's a bit of a journey to the island, it's absolutely worth it. This is a remote paradise with colourful buildings, seafood for days and seriously chilled out vibes. Plus, it has a fascinating history – make sure to visit the castle of the Knights Hospitaller overlooking the Aegean Sea, and the glorious 4 th century BC Lycian tomb below it. The fort-monastery of Agios Georgios of the Mountain also boasts one of the best views on the island (you just need to get up 315 steps first).

11.  Thessaloniki

Once the second city of the Byzantine Empire – and later a thriving Ottoman port city connecting east and west – Thessaloniki has only been part of Greece since 1912. And that really shows. This place doesn’t feel like Greece you see in tourist brochures: its central market, Kapani, has all the colour and chaos of an Istanbul bazaar, and much Ottoman architecture remains throughout the city centre – you can even visit the house where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the father of modern Turkey, was born. The harbourside Ladadika area hums with some of the wildest, most fun nightlife in the Balkan peninsula, with most bars and clubs open until 6am and beyond. The old town is perfect for the aimless morning-after mooch – and the ouzo and  bougatsa  breakfast pastries in these parts are unrivalled.

12.  Kalamata

The city of Kalamata in the Peloponnese is home to the ancient ruins of Messenia, the picturesque Navarino Lagoon beach, and also those very famous olives you may recognise the name from. Few tourists venture to these parts, which is great news for you. To explore the wider region, base yourself at the Ant Farm – a beautiful farmhouse just outside the city, where you can stay in one of ten treehouses nestled within the olive trees.

13.  Mykonos

Dubbed the ‘Greek Ibiza’,  Mykonos  is where you’ll find world-famous DJs headlining superclubs while a jet-set crowd mingle on yachts and private jets. But this Cyclades island is not just for the uber-privileged: there are plenty of cute hotels, affordable gourmet restaurants and quiet corners still relatively untouched by the tourism industry. So when you’re done hanging out at the beach clubs and traditional tavernas, just follow the tangled web of dirt-smattered backroads – chances are, there’ll be a heavenly beach waiting at the end.

With its sparkling white beaches, crystalline water and venerable ancient sites, Greece lives up to all the hype. But how to approach this vast country with enough islands to suit everyone’s taste and antiquities dotting the landscape like a historical map of Western civilisation? To help you choose, here's our guide to top experiences in Greece for first-time visitors.

Ancient Athens

Most first-time visitors will arrive and depart through Athens . An absolute must, of course, is the Acropolis , with its iconic Parthenon and the demure robed maidens (Caryatids) supporting the roof of the Erechtheion temple alongside. The modern, vast Acropolis Museum sits just below, and protects the site’s artefacts while placing them in context. Any initiation to ancient Greece should also include the easy walk from the Acropolis down to the Ancient Agora – once the focal point of administrative, commercial, political and social activity, and the spot where Socrates expounded his philosophy. It’s also a snap to loop in other top sites, such as the Temple of Olympian Zeus – its colossal columns reminding us it was the largest temple in Greece – and the Panathenaic Stadium , still in use today. Roman sites include Hadrian’s Arch and the Roman Agora with its evocative Tower of the Winds .

Monastiraki and Plaka

An easy add-on to the walk around ancient Athens is a browse through the bric-a-brac in the daily Monastiraki Flea Market . Shoulder-to-shoulder shops and kiosks hawk a riot of souvenirs, clothes, leather goods, jewellery and burnished antiques. Head to one of the squares buried in the midst of the market, Plateia Avyssinias. It’s perfect for a quick break at bistro-like Café Avissinia , which is tucked amid heaps of restored furniture and fascinating baubles and has Acropolis views from its top floors. Nearby Plaka offers a warren of historic streets jammed with souvenir shops.

Coffee culture

When in Greece, make like the Greeks and have a long, lazy, lingering and chat-filled kafedaki . In the cafes of Athens (try barista champions  The Underdog ) and the central squares of towns throughout the islands and countryside, sitting for a coffee and a long round of people-watching and gossip is a pastime not to be missed. Order a Greek coffee, either sketo (plain) , metrio  (with some sugar) or glyko  (super-sweet) , and watch the world go by.

Santorini (Thira)

Ravishing Santorini lives up to the postcard-perfect photos you’ve seen, perhaps calling you to Greece in the first place. Beauty and fame have a price: Santorini is jammed with visitors in high season. But the rest of the year it’s more peaceful, and it’s easier to get an unobstructed view of the striated ochre cliffs cradling the caldera. Find a spot on one of the multihued volcanic beaches (black, red, white!) or grab a seat for one of its glorious sunsets, ideally in the little town of Oia , the white frosting on the tip of the island.

Mykonos and Delos

Mykonos is the land of glitz, glam and 24-hour parties. Whether bronzing at one of the chic beach clubs such as aptly named Paradise and Super Paradise , promenading through the maze-like streets of Mykonos Town (Hora) dressed to the nines, or dancing the night away at places like open-air Cavo Paradiso , come ready to party, and bring a bankroll to match. Ironically, one of Greece’s most treasured ancient sites, Delos , sits on a small island offshore. The mythical birthplace of twins Apollo and Artemis (two of the most important ancient Greek gods), Ancient Delos  is a shrine turned sacred treasury and commercial centre. A little dose of serious history to leaven the non-stop romp on Mykonos.

Island hopping in the Cyclades

The super-famous islands draw visitors from far and wide every year, but it’s well worth adding at least one other island to the mix… pick one that takes your fancy. Or better yet, island-hop around the Cyclades for a classic adventure! Each island has its own character, and a visit to places like the wonderful, volcanic Milos , precious, princess-like Sifnos , raw, countrified Serifos or fertile, mountainous Naxos (to name just a few) adds enormous breadth to a first-time trip.

If time is short, and you don’t have the luxury of extended island hopping, head straight from Athens to tiny Hydra  in the Saronics . Hydra is a delight that awaits just an hour and a half from the main port of Piraeus . Its picturesque horseshoe-shaped harbour town with gracious stone mansions stacked up the rocky hillsides is known as a retreat for artists, writers and celebrities. There are no motorised vehicles (apart from sanitation trucks), leading to unspoilt trails along the coast and into the mountains.

Throughout the year festivals dot the Greek calendar. Ubiquitous Saints Days occur year-round from small village to big city. Carnival (also known as Apokreas) is a time for dress-up and parades; Patras Carnival is the most well-known. The fabulous, suitably famous Greek Easter is a week-long springtime celebration. And the main summertime event is the Athens & Epidaurus Festival , when the exquisite ancient Theatre of Epidavros and Athens’ Odeon of Herodes Atticus (right by the Acropolis) are the headline venues of this cultural feast with a top line-up of local and international music, dance and theatre.

The long lunch

You haven’t lived the Greek life, and certainly not had a full summer experience, until you’ve partaken in the ‘long lunch’. Ideally, you’d have a table-full of friends and family, but even with a smaller group, while you’re in Greece be sure to head to a seafood taverna and dine al fresco. Sip endless afternoon ouzo accompanied by a continuous parade of mezedhes (small dishes): meatballs, zucchini balls, fresh fish, taramasalata (fish roe dip) and more. Lazy laughter with a continuous feast in the beauty of the Greek outdoors, ideally beachside… nothing compares. Top food islands are Lesvos (Mytilini) , Corfu , Crete and Tinos

What would a trip to Greece be without some serious beach time? An embarrassment of riches, Greek beaches range from Santorini and Milos’ multihued volcanic rocks to Kefallonia and Lefkada’s broad, vast sweeps of soft sand or small white stones. The waters of Sifnos sparkle like rainbows. Paros  is known for world-class kite surfing. Little Kythnos has a double-sided beach, arcing out into the sea. Greece is a land for beach connoisseurs – sample broadly, and form your own opinions.

Folegandros

Through the ages, Corfu's natural beauty has caught the eye of famous writers like Homer and Shakespeare, as well as ancient Venetian, French and British armies that fought to control the island. Today, it's a picturesque haven for travelers seeking some serious rest and relaxation. There are plenty of resorts overlooking the Ionian Sea and restaurants, bars and shops lining the streets in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town of Corfu. Here, you'll also find plenty of museums, palaces and historic estates to keep you busy. Also budget time for visiting Paleokastritsa, a tranquil seaside village home to a 13th-century monastery and top-notch scuba diving sites.

Santorini's classic Cycladic architecture (think: whitewashed buildings with blue-domed roofs) makes this archipelago one of the most stunning and frequented of all of the Greek isles. On the main island of Thira, you'll find beautiful red and black sand beaches and well-preserved archaeological sites thanks to its volcanic history. After exploring Thira's busy tourist sights, take a day trip to quieter Thirassia to experience its quaint villages and untouched wilderness. You'll also want to visit Santorini's acclaimed wineries. Most are concentrated in central Santorini and can be seen during a winery tour. And don't miss catching the sunset from Oia for a postcard-perfect view.

One of the most popular Dodecanese islands, Rhodes hugs Turkey's coastline. Rhodes' large footprint allows for a wide range of activities for vacationers to enjoy. The island's namesake medieval city, which historically hosted the Knights of Saint John, showcases its rich history with well-preserved Gothic structures and several museums. Meanwhile, turquoise waters and sandy stretches like Lindos Beach (which sits alongside a scenic seaside village) and Agathi Beach (set in a picturesque cove) will suit any beach bum, and nature lovers can delight in the verdant Valley of Butterflies. What's more, Rhodes' many villages and cities boast flavorful food offerings and lively nightlife scenes.

Since only a portion of Karpathos is developed for tourism, this Dodecanese island is a haven for those seeking a secluded, low-key getaway. Spend days swimming in crystal-clear water and lounging on unspoiled beaches like Apella and Kyra Panagia. Adventurers can try their hand at windsurfing, a popular activity in the southern bay of Afiartis, or hike some of the island's mountainous trails. Travelers who really want to get away from it all can also take a day trip via boat to Saria or Sokastro, uninhabited and undisturbed islets that were once connected to Karpathos.

Greece's largest island offers something for every traveler. Sun-seekers can lounge on Crete's sandy beaches (such as Vai and the pink sand Elafonisi), and nature lovers can hike through Samaria Gorge in White Mountains National Park. History buffs can explore ancient sites like the Venetian Fortezza in Rethymnon, or visit Heraklion to see the Palace of Knossos (where the mythical Minotaur reportedly roamed) and check out the esteemed Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Everyone will enjoy savoring authentic Cretan fare – including graviera (a Gruyere-like cheese) and dakos (barley rusk topped with tomato, oregano and olive oil) – at the island's tavernas.

Although much of Kefalonia's impressive Venetian architecture was destroyed during an earthquake in 1953, the island still feels magical thanks to its diverse landscape. Wander through charming villages like Assos and Fiscardo to see colorful houses and beautiful churches. Then, soak up some sun on one of the island's pebbly or sandy beaches (Myrtos is the most popular), or take a dip in the clear turquoise water to snorkel or scuba dive. If you'd rather get an adrenaline rush, hike to the top of Megas Soros (the highest point in the Ionian Islands) in Mount Ainos National Park or explore one of Kefalonia's underground caves.

Head to Zakynthos for its breathtaking yet rugged coastline full of hidden cove beaches, some of which are home to the endangered caretta caretta sea turtle species. Popular spots include Navagio (or Shipwreck) Beach – which can only be admired from a distance during a boat tour  – and the magical Blue Caves, where the reflection of the sky and the white limestone turns the water an ethereal shade of blue. Check out the Venetian Castle that overlooks Zakynthos' main town, then visit the Post-Byzantine Art Museum of Zakynthos to peruse art exhibits.

This small island's proximity to Athens makes it a popular weekend getaway for city-dwelling Greeks. But since Serifos is less visited by international crowds, the island retains a distinct authenticity and an opportunity to unwind. Here, visitors should embrace the art of doing nothing. But don't worry, the island's secluded stretches of sand like Ganema Beach (popular with the yacht crowd) and Psili Ammos (known for its soft sand) are perfect for doing just that. More social vacationers can also shop for souvenirs or sip ouzo at open-air cafes in the villages of Chora and Livadi.

Most Greek islands are known for their beaches, but Skiathos features some of the region's best. Here, you'll find more than 60 awe-inspiring options, including secluded Lalaria Beach and clothing-optional Banana Beach. Skiathos' vibrant blue water also makes it a terrific place to go sailing. Or, get picture-perfect views from above by hiking some of the island's 120-plus miles of trails. When you've gotten your fill of sun and sand, spend some time admiring the historic Monastery of Panagia Evangelistria. No visit would be complete without heading to Skiathos Town to eat authentic Greek cuisine and party at a local nightclub.

Spend your next vacation in Syros if you want to be surrounded by history and culture without rubbing elbows with hordes of tourists. Syros offers a quieter scene than other Cycladic islands, making it easy to leisurely meander through its charming towns. Check out Ermoupoli's architectural marvels, such as its town hall and the Apollon Theater, then climb the hill above Ermoupoli to Ano Syros, where you'll discover medieval fortifications and panoramic city views. After a few hours of sightseeing, unwind on one of Syros' sandy beaches.

Gorgeous scenery is available everywhere you turn on the Cycladic island of Milos. This volcanic island boasts more than 40 beaches surrounded by jaw-dropping rock formations (check out the lunar landscape at Sarakiniko), as well as houses sporting a variety of vibrant colors. Plus, Milos features multiple caves (including underwater options for scuba diving), hot springs and hiking trails. For a dose of local history, check out the island's catacombs, ancient theater and Archaeological Museum. The latter houses a life-size replica of Alexandros of Antioch's world-renowned Venus de Milo sculpture, which was discovered on the island in 1820.

An ideal spot for slow travel, Astypalea was made for long days of sunning on the sand, hiking through rocky countryside and perusing quaint villages. Shorelines here range from the sandy cove of Agios Konstantinos, which offers spectacular views of the hilltop village of Chora, to the rugged Kaminakia, which is worth the extra effort it takes to get there. Visitors can spend time hiking between beaches while passing Byzantine chapels and scenic monasteries along the way. What's more, the main village of Chora features a Venetian castle, idyllic old town streets to stroll through and a variety of locally produced cheeses and honey to sample.

Part of the Saronic Gulf, Hydra is one of the closest Greek islands to Athens and immediately stands out from its neighbors for its lack of motor vehicles. That's right – you'll have to meander your way around the car-free cobblestone streets on foot or on one of the many mules and horses that reside on the island. But such romanticism is a large part of Hydra's appeal to travelers. While here, walk the island's pebbly shorelines and explore its charming seaside towns like Hydra Town, where you'll discover lavish mansions (many now turned into museums) of elite families of yore and some of Hydra's best nightlife venues.

Folegandros offers a completely different experience than its Cycladic neighbor, Santorini. Here, you'll find undeveloped, hard-to-reach beaches surrounded by steep cliffs, lending a quiet remoteness far from the beach clubs of more touristy islands. Rugged beaches like Katergo and Livadaki are must-visits for their scenery and seclusion, while Agali is a top spot for its nearby tavernas. The clifftop old town of Chora, the largest village on the island, is also worth exploring for its whitewashed architecture, local culture and unbeatable sunset views.

Koufonisia's islands may be among the smallest of the Cyclades, but they offer everything you need for a relaxing seaside getaway. Pano Koufonisi (Koufonisia's only inhabited island) is where you'll find the destination's most beautiful beaches, some of which are clothing optional. After the day's adventures, eat, drink and shop in Chora, the island's capital. For a more secluded feel, take a day trip to Kato Koufonisi to swim or sightsee by boat. A third island, Keros, is not accessible because of its status as a protected archaeological site, but you'll likely see it from afar while traveling.

Paros, one of the most central Cycladic islands, is a mecca for water sports activities. At the island's sun-drenched beaches, travelers can windsurf, kitesurf, scuba dive and go boating, among other pursuits. Away from the water, visitors will find bustling Parikia, which boasts numerous boutiques, restaurants and bars. Paros' capital also features several noteworthy historical sites, including the sixth-century Panagia Ekatontapiliani (which means "Church with 100 Gates" in English) and a 13th-century Venetian castle. Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades, meaning there's a lot more shore to go around. On this unassuming island, you'll find plenty of beaches to write home about, from popular Plaka to scenic Agios Prokopios, and lots of water sports activities. Greece is famous for its picture-perfect beaches and romantic island escapes. While 2021 was an ideal time to see some of Greece's more popular tourist destinations with fewer crowds at more affordable prices, as post-pandemic travel picks up, it's time once again to consider some of Greece's underrated destinations.

When it comes to Greece, we encourage travelers to think outside the box. The country has hundreds of islands , but also an expansive mainland rife with natural wonders such as mountains and marine parks, as well as vineyards and historic monuments. For alternatives to popular spots like Santorini , Mykonos and Athens , consider one of these more underrated destinations in Greece.

1. Kastellorizo

You may have never even heard of Kastellorizo, an island also known as Megisti, until now. Closer to Turkey than to Greece, the island will captivate you. Ease yourself in and start with its beautiful harbor, where the sun shines down on colorful neoclassical buildings scattered along the seaside.

Just like many Aegean and Mediterranean islands, Kastellorizo features a blue grotto sea cave to explore by boat. Another must-see is the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhode, which offers views of neighboring Turkey from its perch on a reddish hill.

2. Oh Alonissos Marine Park

The largest protected marine area in Europe , Alonissos Marine Park is one of the best destinations in Greece to view marine life, most notably Mediterranean monk seals. It's also a prime spot to scuba dive , snorkel or even visit historic monasteries and churches.

The park is made up of several islands (some uninhabited) that are covered in pine and strawberry trees, orchids, wildflowers and herbs such as wild sage and oregano. Underwater, there are numerous types of seagrass that more than 300 marine species call home. Visitors may also spot dolphins, sperm whales and loggerhead turtles in the Alonissos waters.

The hills of Mount Olympus hold far more than just tales of Greek mythology. They're also home to the town of Rapsani and its accompanying vineyards. Rapsani is a red wine created from a blend of three different grapes: Xinomavro, Krassato and Stavroto. Visiting this sloping wine region is truly an off-the-beaten-path experience.

In order to access the vineyards that climb up the hills, you'll need to get off the road and drive along dirt trails. Pair a visit to the most famous winery in the area, Tsantali, with a trip to the nearby Mount Olympus National Park.

4. Nafplion

Nafplion is one of the most beautiful and romantic towns in the Peloponnese region of Greece for an alternative seaside holiday. An easy drive from Athens, Nafplion features a picturesque old town and harbor that are perfect for strolling.

Arvanitia Beach is pebbly but has clear turquoise water ideal for a refreshing swim. Make sure to visit the Bourtzi Castle, a 15th-century medieval fortress that sits on a tiny islet just off the coast of the charming town.

5. The Athens Riviera

If you don't have enough time to head to the Greek islands , a visit to the Athens Riviera, a stunning stretch of coastline, gives you an easy dose of sand and sun. Just 30 minutes away from the Greek capital, the coastal area is accessible by car or even tram from Athens , so you don't need to fret over the ferries.

The area teems with many beautiful beaches, plus fancy nightclubs, quaint harbors, hidden sea caves and tranquil fishing coves. One of the most popular areas to visit with a few sandy beaches is Voula, which also has towering rocks that overlook Lake Vouliagmeni.

Spend the night at the new(ish) Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel, a fancy hideaway just 30 minutes from Athens city center on the tip of the Riviera.

6. Vikos Aoos National Park

Greece has an immense amount of natural beauty beyond just its most famous islands. If you're an outdoorsy type, we recommend heading straight to Vikos Aoos National Park in northwest Greece.

The park is named after its precipitous gorges, Vikos Gorge and Aoos Gorge. Besides exploring these two epic natural wonders, travelers can enjoy outdoor activities among the many rivers, canyons, lakes, mountains and woodlands within the park. Expect to see a number of different bird species, plus animals like otters, foxes, wolves and deer — and watch out for brown bears!

7. Kastoria

Part of Greece but in the Macedonia region, Kastoria is often compared to the Amalfi Coast , only without the tourists. The Hellenic town sits along a peninsula that juts out into Lake Orestiada. The lake — deemed a national monument in Greece — is backed by rocky, wooded mountains.

Besides enjoying the lake, visitors can explore the Byzantine churches and Ottoman architecture in Kastoria. One of the most important attractions is the Panagia Mavriotissa Monastery, which sits on the shores of the lake and dates back to the 11th century.

8. Elafonisos

An island often frequented by Greek travelers, Elafonisos sits off the coast of the Peloponnese region near Athens. Although it's tiny, Elafonisos still has abundant white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters. Besides the island's glorious beaches (Simos Beach is a favorite for its unique shape), there are ancient ruins to explore.

Divers can appreciate the island's underwater ruins, too. Pavlopetri is one of the oldest complete sunken towns found underwater. The best part? Elafonisos is only a 10-minute ferry ride from Pounta, a port in the Peloponnese region, perfect for travelers who want to minimize travel time on their vacation or who get seasick on long ferry rides.

9. Lefkas (Lefkada)

This Greek island in the Ionian Sea is one of the few islands in Greece you can actually drive to — it's connected to mainland Greece by a causeway. Even though it's technically not a freestanding island, it's just as breathtaking as its island neighbors, with white-sand beaches and charming Greek villages . One of the island's most iconic beaches is Porto Katsiki, backed by an enormous, awe-inspiring cliff.

Windsurfers should head to its southern beach Vassiliki, while kitesurfers will prefer the beaches in the north of this breezy island. If you need a sand and sun break, check out the fishing cove Sivota, visit the coastal village of Vlichos or soak in the natural beauty of Karia, a tiny hamlet located in a fertile valley further inland.

Even if you want to spend a romantic holiday in Santorini , a family weekend in Athens or a getaway partying in Mykonos , remember that Greece is a large country with hundreds of islands , 10 national parks and many other great places to visit. Should I Visit Mainland Greece, Or The Islands?

A question most visitors to Greece will come up with at some point, is “should I visit mainland Greece, or the islands?” This is a really good question, especially coming from people who haven’t seen much of Greece. Here is a guide introducing all regions of Greece.

Should I visit mainland Greece, or the islands?

To begin with, let’s clarify one thing. The question “should I visit mainland Greece, or the islands?” has no right or wrong answer. Greece is an all-around beautiful country, and you can’t really go very wrong with your choices.

That said, before you decide where to go in Greece you should ask yourself a few questions.

As an example, you could consider whether you want to take a ferry or a domestic flight to one of the islands. You could ask yourself if you prefer to rent a car and go on a roadtrip , or use public transportation instead.

Understandably, the most important factor to consider is which parts of Greece you really want to visit.

Are you fascinated by the photos you’ve seen of the Santorini caldera? Did Meteora strike you as the one place you must absolutely see in Greece? Would you just prefer to go off-the-beaten track, where few other tourists venture?

If you do a little research before your trip, the answer might just present itself.

Study the Geography of Greece

If you have never been to Greece, start by having a look at the map of the country. You will see that there is a large continental area, mainland Greece. To the east, the west and the south, you will notice several groups of islands.

Greece is divided in nine large geographical regions, of which six belong to the mainland. From north to south, you will see Thrace, Macedonia, Epirus, Thessaly, Sterea Ellada and the Peloponnese.

The remaining three regions are the islands. You will see the Aegean Islands, comprising several subgroups, the Ionian Islands and Crete. This article offers an introduction to the Greek island groups .

Getting from one part of the country to another might not be entirely straightforward. So my best advice is to limit the areas of Greece you want to visit, especially if you only have a few days.

Combining several areas, or several islands in different island groups, is not only time-consuming but can also be rather expensive.

What is there to do on mainland Greece

Apart from certain areas, mainland Greece is probably not as a well-known destination as “the Greek islands”. Visitors are often surprised to find out that Greece not only has plenty of mountains, but also quite a few ski centres!

Assuming, however, that you are not really interested in winter holidays in Greece, there is plenty to do on mainland Greece. There are many amazing beaches, plenty of archaeological sites, and quite a few picturesque towns and charming villages.

As mentioned earlier, Greece is divided in six main geographical regions, each of which has its own character and appeal. Here’s a short introduction to those areas.

Athens – The capital

Greece’s capital doesn’t need a special introduction. It’s a bustling, busy city with lots to do, and tons of tourist attractions. The most famous attraction in Athens is the Acropolis.

Apart from the ancient sites , Athens has several museums . It would take you several days to visit all of them.

In addition, budget-minded travellers will find a ton of free things to do in Athens , so they can easily spend a few days here.

Sterea Ellada – Ancient sites and unique Easter traditions

Sterea Ellada is the central region of Greece, sometimes referred to as Central Greece. It is the most populated region, as it includes the peninsula called Attica , where Athens is located.

However, there is a lot more to this region of Greece. One of the best known attractions in this area is Delphi . This amazing archaeological site is a popular day trip from Athens, and it’s totally worth it.

Visit with a guide, and you will find out more about the cult of Apollo and Pythia, the Oracle. Even though her prophecies were ambiguous, her advice was important to everyone.

Nearby Arachova has some pretty unique Easter traditions . It’s not like Easter is not celebrated in other areas of Greece. However, Arachova is pretty special when it comes to Greek Easter celebrations.

People who are visiting Greece during Greek Easter should absolutely consider visiting Arachova. It will offer a different perspective on Greek culture.

If you are looking for more remote places to visit, consider heading out to the mountains of Evritania . You will discover places you never imagined existed in Greece!

Overall, the region of Sterea Ellada deserves to be properly explored. There are many off-the-beaten track areas where you are unlikely to find any other tourists.

The Peloponnese – The quintessential Greece

I can’t imagine someone who wouldn’t fall in love with the Peloponnese. This is where some of the best known archaeological sites in Greece are located. It’s also where the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman Empire started.

The Peloponnese simply has it all. There are mountains, hiking trails, wineries, archaeological sites, stone villages, dramatic landscapes and plenty of beautiful beaches.

You will find authentic towns, like Kalamata and Tripoli , but also popular coastal resorts, like Stoupa and Kardamyli . You can visit some of the prettiest towns in Greece, like Nafplion and Areopolis , but also lose yourselves in the depths of the wild, uninhabited Mani .

In terms of ancient sites, you will need to return to the Peloponnese if you want to see everything. The popular Mycenae and Epidaurus can be easily visited on a day trip from Athens, possibly with a stop at Ancient Corinth or Acrocorinth . However, there are many more ancient sites in the Peloponnese.

Visit the Ancient Olympia , where the first Olympic Games happened in 776 BC. Drive towards the south and explore Ancient Messene , a surprisingly quiet site with an impressive stadium. Discover the temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae , the first Greek monument to have been awarded the UNESCO status.

The Peloponnese is also home to sites from later eras. The fascinating Byzantine site of Mystras should definitely be on your list. You can also explore the castles of Methoni and Koroni , to the west, and Monemvasia , to the east.

Finally, Peloponnese has some of the most beautiful and diverse beaches in Greece. From the amazing Elafonisos , to the popular Finikounta and the long stretches of sand around the Kyparissia area, the Peloponnese has a beach to suit everyone’s taste. Just follow the coastline, and you will bump into one you will love!

Thessaly – Not just the Meteora monasteries

Thessaly region is home to one of the most visited tourist attraction in Greece, the Meteora monasteries . These monasteries built on top of some unique, wild rock formations, are really one of the most amazing things to see in Greece.

However, Thessaly has a lot more to offer. The vibrant town of Trikala is one of the most pedestrian-friendly towns in the whole of Greece. Larisa and Volos are also very lively, and you will find that nightlife is pretty active.

The Pelion peninsula is a popular destination for Greeks, and not only. In summer, you can visit the beautiful beaches, and go hiking around the beautiful nature. If you visit in winter, you will see an entirely different side, as snow is quite common.

Another favourite destination in Thessaly is Plastira Lake . Visit in autumn, and you will be impressed by the colours and the ambiance! Similarly, you can reach some of the smaller villages, Elati and Pertouli , that keep their cool even in summer.

If you are visiting Thessaly by all means go to Meteora, but do take some time to explore some towns that few tourists have time to visit. You will see a side of Greece that you never knew existed.

Epirus – The land of a thousand faces

An unexpectedly beautiful area of Greece, Epirus is largely mountainous. It has many rivers, lakes and gorges, but it also boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. You will find beautiful traditional villages, incredible stone bridges, castles and monasteries.

Epirus is really an all-year-round destination. You can go up all the way to the traditional Zahorohoria , Metsovo and Tzoumerka villages, and explore a part of Greece that not many people get to see. Alternatively, you can stay by the coast, at the most popular resorts of Parga and Syvota , with blue-green waters.

In terms of towns, you should definitely spend some time in Ioannina . It’s a picturesque town with an interesting history, built right on a beautiful lake.

Take some time to visit the castle, the Byzantine Museum, and the little island inside the lake. Stroll around the cobbled streets, sit at one of the numerous cafes and just watch the people go by.

If you are interested in ancient history, make sure you visit the Nikopolis Ancient Theatre , and the Nekromanteion at Aherontas . This was one of the Gateways to Hades in Ancient Greece, where the mortals came to communicate with the dead.

Depending at the time of year you visit Epirus, you can go kayaking, white-water rafting, or river trekking. Whatever you do, don’t miss hiking around Voidomatis river – the landscapes are out of this world!

If you have only been to a couple of the Greek islands, you will never believe that Epirus is still the same country.

Visit Epirus if you want a combination of quaint mountain villages, pretty towns and lovely beaches. You will experience a totally different side of Greece.

You may be familiar with the name Macedonia , and the Macedonia naming dispute . Even if you aren’t, you will probably have heard of Alexander the Great, the king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon.

The name “Macedonia” has been linked to Greece for thousands of years. The Ancient Kingdom of Macedon covered parts of a few modern countries – Greece, Bulgaria, Northern Macedonia, Albania and Serbia.

Many visitors are unaware that modern Greece’s largest geographical region has been called Macedonia ever since the area was annexed to our country, in 1913.

What to do in Macedonia Greece

This region of Greece has a long and rich history. This is where you will find the remains of numerous important ancient Greek cities, such as Vergina , Filippi , Pella and Dion . This is also where you will find Mount Olympus , the mythological residence of the 12 Olympian Gods .

The most important city in Macedonia is Thessaloniki . It’s a fascinating city with tons of ancient ruins, excellent museums, a beautiful upper town and dozens of churches, Byzantine temples and mosques.

Additionally, it has fantastic traditional markets, a lovely coastal promenade and a vibrant nightlife. From exhibitions to festivals to cultural events, there is always something going on in Thessaloniki!

Thessaloniki has an international airport, and you can fly there year-round. Here is how to get to Thessaloniki city center from the airport .

Beaches and nature in Macedonia

If you are a beach person, Macedonia won’t disappoint you. The beautiful beaches of Chalkidiki are some of the best in Greece. According to the people of Thessaloniki, “there is no place like Chalkidiki”!

Macedonia is also full of mountains and lakes, and it’s ideal if you want to get off the beaten track. Skiers will be delighted to find out about Seli, Vasilitsa, Kaimaktsalan and Tria Pente Pigadia ski centres.

A unique place in Macedonia is Mt Athos , a peninsula full of monasteries. Mt Athos can be visited only by men, and you need to plan and reserve your visit well in advance.

Macedonia is a great destination if you want to visit Greece beyond the beaten track. You will love it if you have a special interest in Roman and Byzantine history.

Thrace – The unknown Greece

The small area of Thrace in Greece is unknown not only to visitors, but also to many Athenians and other people who live in south Greece. In fact, the name Thrace refers to a larger geographical area, shared by Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey.

If you visit Thrace, you will be surprised with the different traditions and cultures, that you won’t see anywhere else in Greece.

Thrace is home to large Muslim populations, as well as to people of Greek and Pontian origin, who moved here with the collapse of the Soviet Union, in the early 1990s. There are also other minorities, such as the Pomakoi. All these people speak a number of different dialects and have their own local customs.

Thrace is an area full of beautiful nature , forests, mountains, and off-the-beaten-track hiking paths. If you decide to visit the unknown Thrace, rent a car and drive to Nestos river, lake Vistonida, a Natura 2000 area, and Delta Evrou.

You will discover quite unique ecosystems and rare animals and birds. Did you know that Greece has flamingoes, wildcats and jackals?

The small, picturesque towns, Xanthi , Komotini and Alexandroupoli , are simply enchanting. Wander around the tiny cobbled streets, and explore the interesting architecture, a mix of Balkan and neoclassical styles.

Thrace is an ideal destination if you want to visit the unexplored Greece . It’s a unique place where you will feel that time has stopped – and you may even feel you are in a different continent.

What is there to do on the Greek Islands

Visitors often refer to “ the Greek islands ” as if they were a small group of islands close to each other. It couldn’t be further from the truth!

The Greek islands are three large groups of islands split into several smaller subgroups. Every group of islands has its own character. I bet that each of your friends who has been to Greece will have their own favourite.

Arguably the most famous group of islands in Greece are the Cyclades . This is the group to the east of mainland Greece, which includes Santorini , Mykonos , Milos , Naxos , and about 20 other major islands.

While the majority of the Cyclades are rocky and dry, the Ionians and the Sporades are more fertile and green.

Naturally, most of the islands are great for swimming and spending time on the beach. That said, Santorini doesn’t have the best beaches in the Cyclades.

If you are visiting in summer, I strongly suggest combining Santorini with at least another island. If you are mostly after beaches, I strongly recommend Milos, Naxos and Lefkada in the Ionian side.

Some islands, like Mykonos , Zakynthos or Ios are known for their nightlife. Others, like Tinos , Corfu or Chios are known for their picturesque towns and villages.

Many of them have some ancient ruins, with Delos island being the most famous one.

Architecture, landscapes and regional dishes vary a lot from each island to the next, even among islands that belong to the same group.

The biggest Greek island – Crete

An island that is beyond any comparison is Crete . It combines everything a visitor might be after when taking a holiday in Greece.

If you are going to this big island, try to allow two weeks at a minimum. Otherwise, just concentrate on a single area, as Crete has lots to do.

My best advice is to spend some time exploring the main cities. Chania should definitely be on your itinerary, though you should be prepared for large crowds coming out of cruise boats if you visit in summer.

It’s a charming coastal town, and you can easily spend a few days here.

Even though many people will try to put you off Heraklion , I completely disagree.  Heraklion combines the city feeling with life on an island, and it’s a lively place all year round. Furthermore, it has one of the best archaeological museums in Greece.

Rent a car and explore the amazing beaches, the fascinating ancient sites of Knossos , Festos and Gortyna , the mountain villages and the delicious, authentic Cretan culinary tradition. There is just one minor problem – Crete will set your expectations very, very high!

Greece mainland vs the islands

As you can see from all the above, choosing where to go in Greece isn’t exactly an easy choice. There are beautiful places all around the country, and every region has its own charm.

If you are a first time visitor and you really want to tick off the most important tourist attractions, your best bet is to combine some of the mainland with the islands.

Visit Athens, Delphi, Meteora and Santorini, and see if you have time for another island or two. This will give you an idea of Greece’s diversity, and chances are that you will start planning your next trip straightaway!

If you are happy to drive, you can take a road trip through the Peloponnese. This is one of the easiest areas to explore, as it’s close to Athens, and there are plenty of routes you can take to cover one, two or more weeks .

If you prefer smaller, more compact places and are keen on exploring many beaches, you can choose to visit some of the islands. Island hopping used to be very popular back in the 80s, and is now a lot easier due to the fast ferries .

The easiest islands to hop around are the Cyclades and the Dodecanese – though if you only have a few days I don’t recommend you visit more than two or three islands.

All in all, every visitor will find their own favourite places to visit in Greece. Even though the islands are charming, the mainland can also be quite fascinating, partly because some parts are not easily visited.

There are absolutely no areas of Greece where I wouldn’t like to go back. And I still haven’t been to all of them!

As both Greece’s capital and the nation’s largest city, Athens deserves at least a day or two of exploration. Visitors can head to popular attractions like the  Acropolis and Parthenon, but more modern neighborhoods like Exarchia, known for its bohemian flair, are worth checking out, too.

There are hundreds of Greek islands to choose from, but one gaining more attention by the minute is the positively quaint Milos . Accessible via direct flights from Athens, this island is the place to go for total rest and relaxation. A Quick Overview Of Greece vs Spain

Both countries offer unique and exciting holidays, but which one is better depends firmly on your priorities.

Where Greece really excels is on the coast, as it boasts over 6000 islands! Therefore if you’re looking for a holiday where beaches are the priority, then Greece may be the better choice.

In our opinion, Greek beaches tend to be better than Spanish ones, and often prettier too. Plus the weather and water temperature is often more favourable for swimming and sunbathing.

Additionally, Greek islands often have a real rustic regional charm to them. These islands have incredibly rich histories too, and countless centuries-old architecture, some of which stretches back to Ancient Greece and beyond!

For history and culture, very few places on earth can rival Greece.

However Spain is one of those countries that does give Greece a run for its money. This nation has a rich history and has many stunning architectural gems. Whilst cosmopolitan cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville are famous for their galleries, museums, and beauty.

In fact, when it comes to sightseeing Spain has it all. Every city and region of the country is packed with things to do and see. A trip to Seville or Barcelona, for example, can easily last a few days and you still won’t be bored.

The food scene is also excellent in Spain (home of iconic tapas ), so if cuisine is top of your holiday list then Spain may be a better choice. The transport system is also very good, so traveling around the country is relatively easy.

In essence Spain is perfect for urban tourists, art and food lovers. So if you’re looking for a holiday which involves many city scenes, Spain will likely suit you better.

Although that’s not to say Spain doesn’t have gorgeous natural sights too. The Pyrenees mountain range in the north, and beaches on the Mediterranean Coast are popular and photogenic spots for a reason.

In contrast to Spain, Greek cities tend to have far less to do than their Spanish counterparts, and the transport system is not as efficient. That said, it is possible to travel cheaply between mainland Greece and the islands by air or ferry.

In fact Greece does win when it comes to cost. We’ve found that Greece tends to be a little cheaper than Spain in regards to accommodation and eating out.

For us, Greece is also the better holiday destination if you’re looking for relaxation, time spent outdoors, and an island hopping adventure.

Below we look at some of the natural sights you will come across in Greece and Spain, as well as comparing their cuisines and cities!

By doing so, we hope to build up a better picture about what you can do in each country, which should help with your decision about which one suits you more.

How Do The Beaches & Landscape Compare?

With so many islands, it will come as little surprise to hear that Greece is packed with natural wonders.

The Ionian archipelago is a popular destination for tourists, and one of the best places to see nature at its greatest. Visit the Melissani Lake Cave on Kefalonia for an other-worldly experience. Situated 20 meters underground, you can explore this magical cave by rowing boat.

The island of Zakynthos has some of the best beaches in Europe, like Shipwreck Beach (photo below) and is a popular destination because of that.

Also named Zante , this island has an energetic nightlife scene so is perfect for tourists who want to sunbathe and swim in the day, but dance and drink when the sun goes down.

Zante is also home to the Blue Caves, a series of pretty underground waterways that wind their way into the coastline.

Of course Greece is packed with many stunning islands, and one of the best things about this country is the ability to island hop and discover your own favourite.

The amazing thing is you can find an island in Greece for pretty much any holiday you want. Want lively nightlife? Choose Mykonos or Paros . Want lots of family friendly activities, then head to Crete or Corfu. Or if you want an authentic Greek experience, why not head to rustic Naxos. The fact is, Greece is one of the most diverse places in Europe.

One of our favourites is the island of Milos , which is where the Venus de Milo was found! This gorgeous little volcanic island has dozens of beaches, breathtaking turquoise waters, and a welcoming local population.

Mainland Greece also has some spectacular scenery that should be explored. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Meteora (see photo below) in central Greece is well worth visiting.

The atmospheric rock formations there jut out of the ancient landscape, and sitting on top of them are centuries-old monasteries. Those used to be reached by ladders, but thankfully can now be reached by foot via stairs. It’s a place which really transports you back in time.

In fact mainland Greece is full of fantastic hiking trails – many long distance – that take you between ancient villages that have existed for generations.

One of our must-do hikes is the Menalon Trail , a 45 mile trek in southern Greece that takes you between the photogenic mountain villages of Stemnitsa and Lagkadia. Look out for wildlife as you hike .

Spain: Beaches & Landscape

Spain is a great holiday destination because you can easily enjoy a day at the beach and then spend that evening in one of the country’s iconic cities. It has the perfect mix of natural scenes and city delights (more on the cities later), and definitely beats Greece in that respect.

Some parts of Spain have gorgeous beaches too. The protected coastline at Cabo de Gata (Andalusia) is wild, isolated and rarely visited by tourists. Expect hidden coves, white sandy beaches, and dramatic cliffs in this national natural park.

Spain’s Costa de la Luz  in the south has vast expanses of sand perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and a cocktail under blue skies.

But if you want something livelier, then head to the party island of Ibiza , where drinks, dancing and celebrity spotting is the aim of the game on the island’s most popular beaches. Ibiza is Spain’s equivalent to Zante , although we think it’s a little more lively and wild.

If you’re feeling adventurous then get the ferry from Ibizia to Formentera – the smallest of Spain’s  Balearic islands. The beaches here are beautiful and the water is crystal clear and Caribbean-esque. As it’s quite remote, there are very few tourists in comparison to other parts of Spain too.

If you pry yourself away from the coast you’ll find Spain has a huge amount to offer inland. Take a visit to El Tajo de Ronda – a spectacular gorge not far from the Costa del Sol, which has a town perched on the clifftop above. It almost looks like a movie set.

At the opposite end of the country is the majestic Pyrenees mountain range in the north. Made up of over 200 mountains that are over 3000 meters tall, this region is comprised of quaint villages in the foothills connected by some of Europe’s best hiking trails. It’s a great place to go hiking and camping – as we’ve written about before .

Another set of Spanish mountains – the Cantabrians – make up part of the Somiedo Natural Park . This lush park, which was voted one of Spain’s seven natural wonders, is home to spectacular lakes, thick forest, and is a stronghold of the endangered Cantabrian brown bear.

How Does The Culture, Cities & Vibe Compare?

Stepping away from package holiday resorts and into the cities and towns of Greece and Spain will give you a richer, cultural experience.

Whilst Spain probably edges the battle when it comes to cities worth visiting (as we’ll show you further down), Greece still excels when it comes to towns and pretty islands with the ‘wow’ factor.

One of the islands which has that in abundance is Santorini . The two biggest towns there, Fira and Oia, hang on to the cliff-face of this volcanic island, and the buildings within them – whitewashed and often with blue-domed roofs – stand strikingly against the backdrop.

This is a must-visit place in Greece, but also one of the most popular spots throughout the country being visited by around two million tourists per year!

The historic and ancient capital of Athens is well worth staying in for a night or two, and is home to iconic buildings such as the 5th century BC Acropolis and Parthenon . The museum at the Acropolis is full of artefacts from Ancient Greece and is a must for any history buff.

Situated beside the Acropolis is our favorite area of Athens – Plaka . The quaint streets in this neighborhood wind their way up hilly slopes and are adorned with flower pots and tiny independent shops selling jewellery and clothes. With family-run taverns and boutique coffee shops, this is one of the best places in Athens – and Greece – to grab a bite to eat and watch the world go by.

But the title of Greece’s most picturesque town may go to Agios Nikolaos – a little port settlement on the island of Crete.

Surrounded by the sea on three sides, this town has several waterfronts which have a great selection of shopping and dining opportunities.  The infamous ‘leper island’ of Spinalonga – which was in use up to 1957 as a quarantine center – is close by and can be visited via a boat that leaves from the town.

In essence, when it comes to towns and diverse regions, Greece is exceptional. Many of the towns on the islands are fairytale-esque and the regions can be vastly different despite being so close. On top of that, scattered amongst them are remnants of Ancient Greece which only adds to the beauty of Greece.

Spain: The Culture, Cities & Vibe

Spain is packed with beautiful towns that appear little-changed in centuries. However it’s the cities that really pull in the crowds.

City breaks to the likes of Barcelona are popular throughout Europe due to the cosmopolitan feel, and perfect mix between old and modern.

The stunning Basilica of the Sagrada Familia should be one of your first visits in the city, followed by a walk around Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter .

Barcelona is also famous for its shopping, with Passeig de Gracia and the streets around it providing some of the best places to spend your money. In fact if shopping is important to you, then Spain will likely be the better choice than Greece.

The capital of Andalusia, Seville , is popular and no wonder. Myth has it that this city was built by Hercules, and while that may not be true, the culture there is certainly Herculean.

Seville is the home of Flamenco dancing and experiencing a show at the Tablao Flamenco Los Gallos will take your breath away. As the capital of Muslim Spain during the Al-Andalus period, Seville’s spectacular buildings from that time will transport you back in time too.

Nearby Córdoba was an important city during that period as well, and is famous for the immense La Mezquita mosque.

However this city is also one of our favourites to visit due to its historic Old Town which is full of flowers, fountains, immaculate winding cobbled streets and lovely little eateries.

Spain has stunning cities, and if you can pull yourself away from the beaches, you’re in for a real treat. The mix of new and modern, from cultural icons like Flamenco to streets where you can shop the biggest and best brands, Spain’s urban centers can be a holiday in their own right – that doesn’t quite feel the same with the cities in Greece.

How Does The Cuisine Compare?

The traditional food of Greece and Spain is a Mediterranean cocktail of the various people that have inhabited these nations. 

Their food cultures are comparable, and we can’t say one is better than the other. Ultimately it’ll come down to personal preference. Enjoy tapas and sangria in chic city bars? Head to Spain. Want moussaka and ouzo in a island taverna looking over the Aegean? Then Greece will be a dream.

Greece: The Food

Like many Mediterranean cuisines, Greek food involves a lot of fresh vegetables, olive oil, grains, and a good dose of wine!

One of the most famous food exports from Greece is moussaka . This mincemeat and potato or eggplant dish is served everywhere in the country. It’s almost always guaranteed to taste excellent if you get it at any family-run taverna.

Greece is famous for its dips, such as tzatziki – which is made up of garlic, yoghurt and cucumber – and fava , which is made from split peas.

To wash everything down, you must try Greece’s national drink, Ouzo . This strong liquor is made from aniseed, and is usually served with cold water which turns the clear drink a cloudy white.

Spain: The Food

Expect fresh vegetables, a lot of herbs, and a good amount of olive oil when eating out in Spain.

However, Spain’s most famous cuisine is surely tapas . This is a selection of appetizers that are served in both restaurants and bars, and will almost always include jamon iberico – an air-dried Spanish ham.

Greece is known as the birthplace of civilization and democracy, not to mention the Olympics. It is a wildly popular travel destination, with several immensely popular places such as Santorini and Athens . While these vacation spots are packed with amazing things to see and do, it’s worth exploring other parts of the country as well.

Underrated destinations in Greece can be cheaper and more authentic, so it’s a great idea to get off the beaten path just a little. From the small seaside town of Methoni to the traditional island of Patmos, these incredible destinations in Greece are a must-see.

In the north, in the region known as Macedonia, you’ll find the port city of Kavala. This is a major port, thanks to its seaside location, and that also makes it accessible by ferry from several nearby Aegean Islands. Kavala is home to a Byzantine fortress, most of which dates back to the 15th century.

The Kavala Fortress and Castle offers amazing views, and there are even concerts and other cultural events held there throughout the year. Fascinating Ottoman buildings are scattered through Kavala’s pastel-hued old town while it’s bustling harbour front offers plenty of eateries.

Naxos is one of the islands in the Cyclades group. Although it is the largest, it is often overshadowed by Santorini and Mykonos. Naxos, however, has a lot to offer visitors. Most of the island is agricultural, but there are towns and historic attractions to explore as well, not to mention magnificent beaches.

Tour the Old Walled City called the Castro, or admire the marble gate from the 6th century BC called the Portara. The beach of Agios Prokopios is breathtaking, and it offers a place to swim and unwind in stunning scenery.

Patmos is a small island located in the Aegean Sea, and it is known as one of the most religious islands in Greece. It is said that Saint John had his revelation while living on Patmos, and therefore wrote of the apocalypse.

Today, many of the island’s landmarks have some connection to religious history or legend. The most popular attraction on Patmos is the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, which was constructed in the 11th century.

You can also visit the Cave of the Apocalypse, which is built right into the side of the mountain between the two main towns of Skala and Chora. Skála is also the town where you’ll find accommodation and fresh-fish tavernas among buildings used by the Italians during the Italian Rule of the Dodecanese Islands.

On the southern tip of the Peloponnese, you’ll come across the village of Methoni. This small town was one of the seven cities offered to Achilles by Agamemnon. For those willing to venture off the beaten path, there is lots to do, see and explore.

Be sure to start with the ruins of the fortress and castle, called Kastro, that shows off a wonderful example of Venetian architecture from the 15th century. Just a short walk from the castle is a great beach for swimming, and there are lots of taverns nearby where you can fill up on delicious cuisine at the end of the day.

Chios is one of the North Aegean Islands, and it is located just four miles off the coast of Turkey. Famed for its olives, figs and wine, the island is also a major destination for foodies. Nea Moni of Chios, an 11th century monastery, is a must-see attraction.

The interior is beautifully decorated, and its mosaics are considered to be the ultimate examples of Macedonian Renaissance art. Chios is also a popular spot for day trips to Turkey, which can be easily arranged via the local ferry service. Head to the town of Mesta for souvenir shopping and dining at fantastic restaurants.

5. Pelion Peninsula

The Pelion Peninsula in central Greece stretches between the Aegean Sea and the Pagasetic Gulf, and it is a place of incredible beauty that often gets overlooked by travelers. The gulf itself boasts warm water perfect for swimming while a ski resort on Mount Pelion offers endless winter adventure.

You can hike through mountain trails in the morning and sip a cocktail on the beach at sunset while on the Pelion Peninsula. While there are resort towns on the water, there are also smaller mountain villages like Makrinitsa and Portaria where you feel like you’re stepping back in time and seeing a truly authentic version of Greece. he most traditional villages of Pelion, with grey stone roofs, elegant houses and paved paths.

Symi is a small island that is part of the Dodecanese group in the Aegean Sea. Be sure to check out the harbor, which is still largely the heart of the island. You can also drive or take a taxi to Panormitis, a monastery located in the south of Symi. One of the most popular pastimes on Symi is coastal walking, and there are miles of easy-to-navigate trails throughout the island.

3. Kastoria

One of the most underrated destinations in Greece is the city of Kastoria. It is located on a promontory stretching over the beautiful Lake Orestiada, and it is surrounded by gorgeous limestone mountains. There’s also amazing cuisine, impressive nightlife and plenty of historic Byzantine churches. Despite all of that, it is rarely visited by international travelers.

Head to Kastoria and head underground to the remarkable Cave of the Dragon, or learn about the city’s history and culture at the Byzantine Museum of Kastoria. Don’t leave until you’ve dined at an outdoor cafe with a view of the lake and sipped tsipouro, a local version of ouzo.

2. Folegandros

Folegandros, also known as Pholegandros, is one of the small islands found in the Cyclades chain. The landscape on the island is varied, and includes tall cliffs and a large cave. The capital of the island is built on the edge of a 200 meter (650 feet) high cliff. The biggest reason to visit Folegandros is to enjoy some of the best beaches in Greece , many of which will be secluded or at least not very busy.

You can hike around Katergo Beach, and you’ll be stunned by the crystal clear water of Galifos Beach. Angali Beach is the most popular on the island, and it can get busy during the summer months. Tavernas are steps away from Angali Beach, which means that you can enjoy amazing seafood and local wine with a view of the water.

1. Kefalonia

The Greek Ionian Islands are among the best loved of Greece’s 6,000 islands. Kefalonia belongs to this group, but it is not as well known as other Ionian Islands like Corfu. Kefalonia is just as beautiful, and boasts breathtaking scenery, but it is a lot less developed and less crowded.

On Kefalonia, you can head to the brilliant Drogarati Caves, or you could join a boat tour and admire the island’s four peninsulas from the water. The famous Myrtos Beach, on the island’s west coast, has been repeatedly voted one of the best beaches of the world.

Sami Beach is also popular, and it is easy to see why. A white pebble beach, bright blue water and lush green mountains framing the view makes it a truly spectacular spot.

Greece is indeed a really popular destination place to visit. And I think you have really given a good list of more places to visit there. I had only visited Kastoria there as I went there for few days for some work. Will definitely love to explore other places too! Thank you!
