Top 5 airlines flying to Bali

The flight crews were extremely professional, helpful, and courteous. Departure and arrival times were accurate. No delay. I will use K airline again. Thanks

Great crew, decent food Charging plugs were broken on both seats next to me. Only the USB port was available, and that charges, very, very slowly. Seat was also broken, it would not lock into position when reclining.

Korean Air had great service and the Bibimbap dish was the best airplane food I’ve ever had. It was a long flight so in between the two meals they served customers could get Shin ramen. The flight attendants let my children use a pair of nice headphones for the flight and had earbuds and slippers for all the adults. The flight was long but the time passed by relatively quickly because they have many great shows in their entertainment TV. I watched the BTS Love Yourself and Speak Yourself concerts 💜

It was ok. Not good and not a bad experience

not too bad but not too great either. Service on all airlines declined ever since covid. Your Delta Stewardess are not that friendly at all. :-(

You did not put me on a Korean Air flight! so I do not have nothing to say

My flight was diverted to Atlanta and I was not given enough time. I paid my travel on April 23, 2023. It was originally Delta from Norfolk to NY, then Korean Air from NY all the way Philippines which is my final stop. Instead from Atlanta to Korea I flew Delta which is okay. Then Korea to Philippines, I flew Asiana Airlines. What I did not like, Ieagle did not sent me an email that my flight was change and so when I went to check in Wednesday the 10th, at 4:30 a.m they told me my flight was delayed at 6;00 p.m and diverted in Atlanta and I am flying Asiana from Korea to Philippines. I do not appreciate that Kayak or Ieagle chenge our flights 5 times and then last minute change again during my day of flight. I hope that you will not make any changes of my flight o Feb 15th because it has to be the same flight with my husband. That is the reason why we made the arrangements early on.

Wonderful cabin crew!!!!! Food was poor, in flight entertainment was just ok. They need to serve more water on a 15 hour flight--we were dehydrated and kept asking for water.

Going through security a third time to get on the next flight was again utterly ridiculous and unnecessary. We were in a International secure area once again and as far as I'm concerned should not have been put through the gears for absolutely no reason. The United States can get all the information they need from the travel itinerary, there was no need to be forced out of a secure area to personally interview everyone on a connecting flight to find out their US immigration status.

Going through security a second time to get on the next Korean Air flight was utterly ridiculous and unnecessary. We were in a International secure area.

Staff and crew are wonderful, professional and courteous. Meal is delicious and snacks can be improved. Entertainment needs improvement, pls update selections of movies. I appreciate that our flight was on time

The space for the seats i like it. Its not too close like other air line. The food is ok and also the staff. I'm waiting for my flight rewards point because until now i didn't recieved it.

Flying with ANA is always a breeze. Seats are very comfortable.

The staff, ground and air, at ANA was very helpful and friendly during check in, boarding and during the flight. This is the reason why I always fly ANA whenever I go to Manila. The food was not the best but the flight crew more than makes up for the shortfall.

Flight was on time and the crew was as expected, friendly and respectful. Food could’ve been better though.

First I will say this was really NOT an ANA flight. ANA used a UNITED jet to perform this flight. I specifically booked with ANA because I did NOT WANT TO FLY UNITED FOR INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS. So to spend $1800.00 and then discover after booking that it was going to be handled by United was very disappointing. I will be more careful next time when I book. The interior was very cramped in economy class; the dinner meal was terrible and also had extremely small portions for an international flight - the bread roll was ice cold and stale - that salad was very wilted; I’ve never had a “snack” that was so salty that it was difficult to eat; the breakfast “waffle” was practically unrecognizable. Really horrible meals for a very expensive international flight. Bathroom floor was also pretty dirty. I’m hoping my return flight is a real ANA airplane that is cleaned and serviced by ANA personnel with ANA meals. I will never book with ANA again if they continue to use UNITED airline jets. Yuck!!!🤢

Ticket was purchased as a United Airlines flight (operated by All Nippon) like what does that even mean? Makes for a VERY confusing flight experience. For instance, what do I look for a United drop off signage and ticket counter or ANA? No explanation anywhere to be found. I also felt a little bit scammed by the obsurdely restrictive seat selection provided. Only middle seats available!! Are you kidding me!! On 6hr + 10hr flights you're forcing me into the middle seat without telling me before I purchased the ticket?? This should be illegal. And to top it off, on the Tokyo LA leg there were quite a few empty seats including window seats! I must also say, the food was a dissappointing as well for my taste, fish with rice ( mostly plain white rice) or a vegetable medly for the breakfast meal? Should be at least 4 choices and at least 1 with eggs. Outside of these issues flight was otherwise ok.

Ground and flight crew were all courteous, extremely helpful and professional. Overall, process is really organized, from boarding to disembarkation.

The space and bed was very comfortable , flight attendants very nice. The food was not tasty at all. I ordered the rib eye and it was so tough I couldn’t cut it.

Food was high quality. Crew was extremely professional, polite, attentive. Flights were on time. Plane had good media tech.

Fast and efficient boarding. Flight was on time. Service was very good for our long flight. First time flying with this airline and I would highly recommend.

Eva Air's Business Class is pretty decent. With the given price, I think that the food can be better.

Pleasant, comfortable, and entertaining. All told, ZERO issues with it. And sadly, so far the flight was WAY more comfortable than the hellhole that is "Lambug Beach Resort" at Badian Beach!

It was a pleasant fly with Eva Air from NYC to Taipei. The crew were friendly and the food was exceeded my expectation.

Eva air is a good airline. The seats on the way to Taipei could have certainly been more comfortable, but all in all it was a pretty good experience.

Overall the flight was what might be expected for a long haul flight to Asia in economy class. The cabin crew was attentive and the food was good. Boarding was fairly fast and easy. The one thing I found frustrating was the EVA app. It is terrible. Trying to do anything on it was almost impossible.

EVA would not help with ticket issue since they were purchased through a travel agency. Even though it was EVA ticket stock. Travel agency Budget Air didn't reissue ticket after airline change which I didn’t learn until trying to checkin on Christmas Day and there was no contact number for the agency to help. I will never use Budget Air to purchase flight again and disappointed in EVA’s refusal to help. Thankfully just under 12 hrs before departure someone from the agency was available to reissue tickets. I was starting to think we would not be flying and the stress trying to resolve was completely unacceptable.

seamless check in/ friendly staff, food is good, always love flying Eva Air

Very uncomfortable and crowded seats in economy. Flight attendant refused request to move to nearby unused seat with more legroom because “It was more money for that seat”. It was also near impossible to reach airline directly by phone. Waits upwards of an hour and not very helpful customer service representatives after long wait. Cannot recommend this airline.

My experience with Eva sir was good except the long walk in LA Lex, that was inconvenient for my age,

Very good , the weather was terrible, but i admired the professionality and politeness and care from the crew, and the excellent contition of the plane

My flight to Los Angeles was canceled Had to book another flight and you charged me extra $500 Very bad experience

Comfort was left wanting due to such a long flight, made the wife and I wish we could upgrade the seats to Business class or First Class, but did not have that option. Food was good but had very limited options and I have a dietary restriction which was difficult for the staff to accommodate since everything provided came with cheese on it. (Cheese could potentially kill me) Did not have an option to inform the staff until we were already in the air about the restriction and was not provided another option before flight departed.

Decent flight, staff was very good, especially with the turbulence during the flight due to weather. Comfort was about par with other airlines but since it was a quick flight, was not much of an issue for us.

The plane was uncomfortable. I paid extra for more legroom but the seat was still uncomfortable. Other seats on the same exact row didn’t have to pay extra but still have extra legroom. I didn’t understand why I needed to pay $170 for. It was Iike China airline just wants to make money off their passengers. It was unfair.

It was a 2 hour flight to Taiwan. Lunch was served. China Airlines goes above and beyond for their passengers.

Liked that I could pick my seat and have a special meal without an extra charge. Luggage is reasonable for overseas trip. What could have been better is boarding and leaving on time.

They were helpful, considerate with asking us for standby preboarding with our infant, gave us toys and excellent service onboard. They were always on time, even early boarding once! All our luggage arrived intact, and they even brought our baby car seat to oversized for us. We love China Airlines!

Great flight, although I flew out of ONT and that is where my car is, lol

Staff is friendly, great variety of entertainment, check in a little messy but due to people not listening. Overall a pleasant experience. Would use again in the future.

Good flight. Fiod was ready a bit late hence a hurry to finish before landing. Excellent crew and service

Excellent meal served with real utensils, cardboard served hot meals instead of plastic utensils and plastic covers. Quick service, friendly and accommodating stewards.

All in all the flight was good. Love the fact that for airline food it was piping hot

I commend the flight attendants on our SFO-SIN flight who went above and beyond to provide us with extra snacks and food. This type of service makes the flight experience personal and awesome.

It was a great flight Food was great Crew was spectacular

In general good, but the machine seems to be long in operation and some functions were restricted as e. g. Adjusting of seats.

When boarding, after business class should be premium economy, but economy class already lined-up at the gate blocking premium economy to board. Singapore airline crew should done a better job to organize this chaos :( Thank you.

It seems paying premium economy does not make difference with economy. No priority boarding, not worthy paying extra$$$ for premium economy.

Every thing was fine. Some ild classical Hindi movies should be add

The premium economy seats were not that great. It could have been more premium than economy seats.

The Best Business Class and First Class flights to Bali 2024

Article last updated on Feb 26, 2024. Written by Olivia & Dirk , based on our 5 years in Bali ( let us plan your honeymoon ).

The Best Business Class and First Class flights to Bali 2024

Flying premium gets you to Bali in comfort, style and well-rested!

A fair amount of airlines are flying to Bali Denpasar Airport while offering business class, and some even offer first class seating. Most of these airlines offer full lay-flat seats to business class passengers, meaning you can have a proper sleep and arrive in Bali well-rested. While business class is more expensive than economy, you will likely not need to waste a day recovering from your flight.

Map of Business Class flights to Bali.

In this article, we show you all your business class options to Bali . Not all airlines however make sense from all starting points, so we have organised all options by (the most common) departure regions. We do believe booking Business Class seats is worth it to make sure you get the most out of your Bali Honeymoon .

From Europe to Bali in Business Class

Not many European airlines fly to Bali, with the exception of KLM from Amsterdam (with a stopover in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur), and Turkish Airlines from Istanbul (direct). Turkish Airlines flies from a large number of cities in Europe and provides some of the highest service levels. KLM’s business class is reasonably good (but not of the level of the middle-eastern carriers), and might be a good option if you are flying from the Netherlands, Scandinavia or the UK.

Other good options to consider are through some of the middle-eastern carriers, like Qatar Airways through Doha and Emirates with a connection in Dubai (Etihad does not fly to Bali). Both are excellent highly rated airlines, and Emirates has an unbeatable First Class cabin. When flying with one of the Middle Eastern Carriers from Europe, your connection will be roughly halfway your journey.

Turkish Airlines

From some major European cities you could also opt for an asian carrier like Singapore Airlines , a great airline with a transfer at our favorite airport on the planet: Singapore Changi. Alternatives are Thai Airways via Bangkok or Cathay Pacific through Hong Kong.

In the past, connecting through Japan or South-Korea were good options from Europe. Unfortunately since the war in Ukraine these airlines don’t overfly Russia anymore, making this a large detour.

We flew Saudi Airlines from Europe to Indonesia before. However they fly to Jakarta, not all the way to Bali.

From North-America to Bali in Business Class

There are no direct flights from North-America to Bali. Your options from the United States and Canada really depend on your location, West Coast over the Pacific and East Coast over the Atlantic. If you are not living on either of the coasts, we recommend comparing flight times from your departure airport before selecting an airline.

From the West Coast: flying over the Pacific Ocean is usually fastest, with a connection South-Korea ( Korean Air ), Taiwan ( Air China or EVA Air ), Hong Kong ( Cathay Pacific ) or Singapore Airlines . There are options through mainland China as well, but the business class offerings are not considered to be at the same level.

Cathay Pacific

From the East Coast: often it is fastest to fly East, with a connection in Europe or the Middle East. Your options likely depend on the airlines flying from your home airport: Emirates is the most luxurious airline that flies to Bali with a layover in Dubai. Other good options in the Middle East include Turkish Airlines (via Istanbul) and Qatar Airways via Dubai. Singapore Airlines flies direct from New York JFK to Singapore, and from there you’ll be in Bali in 3 hours.

From India to Bali in Business Class

From India, the best one-stop options go through Singapore with Singapore Airlines or Kuala Lumpur with Malaysia Airlines . From Delhi, a direct flight with lie-flat seating is offered by Vistara . Of these, Singapore Airlines flies to 8 cities in India and is our favorite: their service is excellent and Changi Airport in Singapore is probably the best transit airport on the planet. Malaysia Airlines flies from 9 cities in India.

Many cities in India are connected by Emirates and Qatar Airways which fly to Bali, but geographically that means backtracking east before flying onwards to South-East Asia, adding many unnecessary hours to your flight.

From Delhi: There is a direct flight with Vistara from Delhi to Denpasar Bali. It offers lie-flat seats in business class on their single-isle A321 planes. Your second-best option is Singapore Airlines with a layover in Singapore Changi, possibly the best transit airport in the world.

From Mumbai: Singapore Airlines is your best option. Two good alternative options are Malaysia Airlines and Thai Airways via Bangkok.

Singapore Airlines

From East Asia to Bali in Business Class

Many airlines in East Asia offer Business Class seats to Bali, and it really depends where you are based. Check the list of airlines below:

From South Korea: The national airline Korean Air flies from Seoul direct to Bali, offering lie-flat seating on their Airbus A330 Aircraft. An alternative is Indonesia’s national carrier Garuda, which flies between Seoul and Denpasar a few days of the week.

From Japan: The two national airlines of Japan unfortunately do not fly to Bali, so your only direct option is Indonesia’s national airline Garuda, which flies from Tokyo Narita to Bali. If you don’t mind transiting, Korean Air with a layover in Seoul can be a good option if you live elsewhere in Japan, as well as either of the Taiwanese carriers (EVA Air or China Airlines).

From China: China Eastern flies to Bali from Shanghai, China Southern from Guangzhou, Xiamen Air from Xiamen, and Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong. All of these offer connections from many cities in mainland China. Note that Xiamen Air and China Southern do not offer a full lie-flat seat in their airplanes.

From Australia to Bali in Business Class

Many airlines fly between Australia and Bali, but due to the short(er) distance not many decent business class offerings are available. The only two options are from Melbourne and Sydney:

From Sydney: Either fly Garuda Indonesia , or Qantas from Sydney to Denpasar. Both offer Business Class seats with an option to go fully flat.

From Melbourne: Garuda Indonesia is the only direct option from Melbourne. Alternatively you could connect in Sydney with Qantas.

There are no good Business Class offerings from Perth, however it is only a short flight to get to Bali!

The Best Ways To Fly to Bali With Points and Miles [Step-by-Step]

Flights Between the U.S. and Bali

Alaska airlines mileage plan, all nippon airways (ana) mileage club, singapore airlines krisflyer, american airlines aadvantage, cathay pacific asia miles, avianca lifemiles, united airlines mileageplus, air france/klm flying blue, other options to fly to bali, final thoughts.

Bali, Indonesia is one of the world’s most popular vacation destinations. The island attracts everyone from nomadic backpackers to travelers seeking high-end luxury, thanks to its pristine beaches, unique culture, and a wide variety of dining and nightlife venues.

Though Bali is a gigantic island covering more than 2,000 square miles, you’ll most likely spend the majority of your time in only 1 or 2 districts.

For example, if you like meditation and culture, you might find Ubud a great fit. On the other hand, if you like beachside partying and coastal life, you may want to stay in Seminyak.

For Americans, Bali is relatively difficult to access as there are no nonstop flights from the U.S. However, because of its huge tourist appeal, there are seemingly unlimited connecting options.

To points travelers, it may seem overwhelming to find the best redemptions for flights to Bali. However, we did all the research so that you can plan your travel stress-free.

In this guide, we’ll discuss in detail the best ways to fly to Bali with points and miles. We’ll talk about round-trip options and will also touch on multi-city super itineraries — these involve travel to many different cities in addition to Bali and are perfect for long vacations.

We’ll begin with some sweet spots that give you the best “bang for your points” and work our way down to some alternative booking methods you may want to try, depending on which airlines you’d like to fly or what type of points you have.

Even though there are no nonstop flights from the U.S., you still have numerous options as far as connecting flights go. In fact, there are so many possibilities that there’s simply no way to cover all of them.

We had to narrow down all of our flight options to the ones that could provide the most luxurious and comfortable inflight experience for the fewest miles .

As always, your secret to success will be to remain as flexible as possible and planning as far in advance as you can.

Best Programs To Book Flights to Bali

This guide will be very detailed — we will go over the options that will yield the best value for your points, and we’ll also include some options for stopovers in other countries so you can plan 2-in-1 vacations!

Cathay Pacific 777 first class cabin

We’re huge fans of Alaska miles. There are truly very few ways to beat the amazing award prices that Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan offers on some amazing partner airlines, including Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Korean Air.

In this guide, we’ll discuss using Alaska miles to book travel on Cathay Pacific or Korean Air . Korean Air only permits round-trip bookings, while Cathay Pacific has no such restriction. Japan Airlines does not offer regular, scheduled flights to Bali.

Here’s the award chart for flights to Bali on the airlines we suggest:

Alaska Airlines does not pass on fuel surcharges  with these airlines, so you can expect your out-of-pocket cost to be very low.

If you want to visit Hong Kong before heading over to the Bali beaches , you can add a complimentary stopover, as long as you find award availability on each flight segment.

To book this award ticket, you’ll need to first find availability and then call Alaska Airlines using the process below:

  • Log into your British Airways account .
  • On the left side of the page, scroll over the Book tab and select Book a flight with Avios.
  • Type your route, travel dates, number of passengers, and class of service.
  • Write down the flight number, date, and time.
  • Call Alaska Airlines at 800-252-7522 .
  • Ask them t0 search for award space on Cathay Pacific for your dates (you may have to provide the flight number).
  • Complete the booking by paying with Alaska miles and for any taxes and fees.

Amazingly, you’ll only pay ~$19 in taxes and fees each way!

Hot Tip: Alaska Airlines offers 1 free stopover on one-way award flights.

Here are some great example routes you can fly:

  • Atlanta (ATL) – Seoul (ICN) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) round-trip for 120,000 Alaska miles + ~$38 in taxes & fees in Korean Air business class
  • Chicago (ORD) – Hong Kong (HKG) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 50,000 Alaska miles + ~$19 in taxes and fees in  Cathay Pacific business class
  • Las Vegas (LAS) – Seoul (ICN) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) round-trip for 120,000 Alaska miles + ~$38 in taxes & fees in Korean Air business class
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Hong Kong (HKG) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 70,000 Alaska miles + ~$19 in taxes and fees in Cathay Pacific first class and business class
  • New York (JFK) – Hong Kong (HKG) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 50,000 Alaska miles + ~$19 in taxes and fees in Cathay Pacific business class
  • San Francisco (SFO) – Seoul (ICN) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) round-trip for 120,000 Alaska miles + ~$38 in taxes & fees in Korean Air business class

Earning Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Miles

The main way to earn Alaska Airlines miles is through the co-branded Bank of America credit card .

The high value of Alaska miles is offset by the fact that Alaska Airlines only has 1 transfer partner: Marriott Bonvoy . Transfer times are usually around 2 business days from Marriott Bonvoy to Alaska.

For every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points you transfer, you will receive 20,000 Alaska miles plus 5,000 bonus miles. If you don’t transfer in increments of 60,000, points will transfer at a ratio of 3:1.

Also, you can buy Alaska miles — the airline often has sales that feature a bonus of 30% to 50% on purchased miles. If you’re planning on buying Alaska miles, we would definitely encourage you to do so during a sale.

Although you’re looking at a maximum of 60,000 Alaska miles per purchase transaction, you can make as many purchases as you wish.

There are many Marriott credit cards available which we cover in our in-depth guide.

Bottom Line: Alaska Airlines offers some of the best redemption rates for flights to Bali . With partners like Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, and Qatar Airways, and its generous stopover allowance on one-way flights , it’s easy to get outsized value. Be sure to check each airline’s award chart before booking, as there are separate charts for each.

EVA Air 777-300ER Business Class

ANA Mileage Club comes in at a close second to Alaska Airlines due to its amazing business class awards. In this case, ANA does not operate any flights from its home country of Japan to Bali, so you will have no choice but to opt for the partner award pricing.

Also, while ANA allows 1 open-jaw and 1 stopover, you must book round-trip flights. If that works for you, ANA miles are redeemable on airlines like EVA Air, Garuda Indonesia, Asiana Airlines, Singapore Airlines (if they release partner availability), or even Turkish Airlines.

Regardless of what flights you choose, it’ll cost 80,000 miles for round-trip economy and 136,000 miles for round-trip business class.

Once you’re ready to book your flights, you can follow this process to get started:

  • Go to ANA’s  website .
  • Click ANA Mileage Club on the top-right banner.
  • Click International and then  Award Reservation.
  • Log in to your account with your Member ID and password.
  • Type in your desired route and dates.
  • Choose your desired booking class.
  • Choose your flights.
  • Generally speaking, ANA does  not permit award holds , even when calling them . You may occasionally encounter a representative who will, but they are few and far between.
  • Houston (IAH) – Taipei (TPE) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) round-trip for 136,000 miles + ~$187 in taxes and fees in EVA Air Royal Laurel business class
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Taipei (TPE) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) round-trip for 136,000 miles + ~$187 in taxes and fees in EVA Air Royal Laurel business class
  • New York (JFK) – Istanbul (IST) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) round-trip for 136,000 miles + ~$395 in taxes and fees in Turkish Airlines business class
  • New York (JFK) – Tokyo (HND) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) round-trip for 240,000 miles + ~$409 in taxes and fees in ANA first class and Garuda Indonesia first class
  • San Francisco (SFO) – Taipei (TPE) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) round-trip for 136,000 miles + ~$187 in taxes and fees in EVA Air Royal Laurel business class
  • Seattle (SEA) – Taipei (TPE) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) round-trip for 136,000 miles + ~$187 in taxes and fees in EVA Air Royal Laurel business class
  • Seattle (SEA) – Seoul (ICN) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) round-trip for 136,000 miles + ~$458 in taxes and fees in Asiana Airlines business class and Garuda Indonesia business class

Hot Tip: Use ANA’s generous stopover and open-jaw policy to work in some creativity to your vacations. You can visit Japan, Taiwan, or South Korea for a week before heading to Bali!

Earning ANA Mileage Plan Miles

ANA partners with American Express Membership Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy for points transfers.

Amex Membership Rewards points transfer to ANA at a 1:1 ratio, and Marriott Bonvoy transfers at a 3:1 ratio, but if you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, you’ll receive an extra 5,000 ANA miles to bring your total up to 25,000 ANA miles.

Amex points will take approximately 2 to 3 days to transfer to ANA, and Marriott Bonvoy points can take  up to 7 days to transfer.

Bottom Line: ANA is ideal in this situation because business class flights are very reasonable. With Garuda Indonesia as an additional airline partner, you can formulate a seemingly infinite number of routes to get to Bali. Just be careful of fuel surcharges with airlines like Air China, and be sure to utilize its policy that allows for 1 stopover and 1 open-jaw.

Singapore Airlines 777 Business Class

We like Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer because it’s the cheapest way to use Chase Ultimate Rewards for flights to Bali in both economy and business class.

It’s also one of the only ways to experience Singapore Airlines’ famous business class on some of the longest flights in the world  since partner award availability in premium cabins is sparse.

There are 2 award charts in this case: one for the East and Central Coasts and one for the West Coast. Here’s a summary of routes originating from the U.S. that you can fly on Singapore Airlines to Bali via Singapore:

When you fly on Singapore Airlines, you won’t be hit with pesky fuel surcharges, and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer is a transfer partner with all major transferable points currencies.

This process can be done completely online by following these steps:

  • Visit Singapore Airlines’ website .
  • Log in to your KrisFlyer account with your membership number and PIN.
  • Click the button that says  Redeem Flights.

Bottom Line: With such diverse transfer partners, no fuel surcharges, a stopover allowance on round-trip flights, and the best Chase Ultimate Rewards redemption to fly to Bali, Singapore Airlines should definitely be at the top of your list to get to Bali.

Cathay Pacific business class cabin on the Airbus A35K

We like American Airlines a lot here because of its reasonable redemption prices and simplicity.

The best way to use AAdvantage miles for flights to Bali is on its Oneworld partner Cathay Pacific .

Here are the pros of using AAdvantage miles :

  • Excellent redemption prices (75,000 for round-trip economy, 140,000 for round-trip business, and 220,000 for round-trip first)
  • No fuel surcharges to Bali (except on British Airways and Iberia)
  • Booking process is easily understandable
  • Easy to accumulate miles fast from credit card welcome bonuses

And here are the cons:

  • No stopover allowance (no free extra countries in your vacation)
  • Only 1 transfer partner: Marriott Bonvoy
  • Relative lack of flexibility with Oneworld partner routes

Here’s how you can book on American Airlines (you’ll need to visit British Airways to search availability):

  • Visit British Airways’ website .
  • Log into your British Airways Executive Club account by clicking Log in in the top-right corner and entering your account details.
  • After logging in, hover over the  Book button in the top banner, and click  Book a flight with Avios under the  Flights sub-menu.
  • Enter your travel information and click  Get flights .
  • Write down the flight numbers, airlines, and times.
  • Call American Airlines at 800-433-7300 and ask to hold the reservation for 5 days.
  • When you have all the miles ready to go, call back and confirm the reservation. Be sure to ask to waive the $25 telephone booking fee!

Here are some great example routes you can take:

  • Boston (BOS) – Hong Kong (HKG) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 70,000 miles + ~$141 in taxes and fees in Cathay Pacific business class
  • Chicago (ORD) – Hong Kong (HKG) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 70,000 miles + ~$141 in taxes and fees in Cathay Pacific business class
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Hong Kong (HKG) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 70,000 miles + ~$167 in taxes and fees in Cathay Pacific business class
  • San Francisco (SFO) – Hong Kong (HKG) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 70,000 miles + ~$167 in taxes and fees in Cathay Pacific business class
  • Seattle (SEA) – Hong Kong (HKG) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 70,000 miles + ~$167 in taxes and fees in Cathay Pacific business class
  • Toronto (YYZ) – Hong Kong (HKG) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 70,000 miles + ~$167 in taxes and fees in Cathay Pacific business class
  • Vancouver (YVR) – Hong Kong (HKG) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 70,000 miles + ~$167 in taxes and fees in Cathay Pacific business class

Earning American Airlines AAdvantage Miles

There are plenty of ways to earn AAdvantage miles quickly, especially through welcome bonuses offered on the Citi and Barclays co-branded American Airlines credit cards .

If you still don’t have quite enough miles, you can top off your AAdvantage account by transferring Marriott Bonvoy points at a 3:1 ratio. We generally don’t recommend this approach, though, since there are much better uses of Marriott Bonvoy points .

Remember that Marriott Bonvoy transfers to American Airlines can take up to 2 business days.

Bottom Line: AAdvantage miles are quite competitive for this specific redemption in Cathay Pacific business class, beaten only by Alaska miles. If you have a stockpile of AAdvantage miles, be sure to give this program lots of thought. You can put awards on hold for 5 days, earn miles relatively quickly through welcome bonuses, and book this award very easily.

Qatar QSuites A350 Seat View

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles is a frequent flyer program that doesn’t get enough love. It’s not for everybody — most people are only interested in round-trip flights to/from a single country, and Cathay Pacific doesn’t necessarily shine in the “vanilla” round-trip flights arena.

Where it does shine, however, is more complex award redemptions , including round-the-world award tickets.

Qatar Airways Qsuites flights transit through the carrier’s hub in Doha. Unfortunately, American Airlines doesn’t allow flights to Bali when they’re transiting through the Middle East, which means you would have to book 2 separate tickets at much more expensive prices.

Enter Asia Miles, which has no such routing rules.

Let’s take a look at some amazing redemption options for Qsuites flights with a connection in Doha:

  • Boston (BOS) – Doha (DOH) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 90,000 miles + ~$508 in taxes and fees in Qatar Airways Qsuites
  • Dallas (DFW) – Doha (DOH) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 90,000 miles + ~$508 in taxes and fees in Qatar Airways Qsuites
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Doha (DOH) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 90,000 miles + ~$508 in taxes and fees in Qatar Airways Qsuites
  • Miami (MIA) – Doha (DOH) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 90,000 miles + ~$508 in taxes and fees in Qatar Airways Qsuites
  • San Francisco (SFO) – Doha (DOH) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 90,000 miles + ~$508 in taxes and fees in Qatar Airways Qsuites
  • Seattle (SEA) – Doha (DOH) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 90,000 miles + ~$508 in taxes and fees in Qatar Airways Qsuites
  • Washington, D.C. (IAD) – Doha (DOH) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way for 90,000 miles + ~$508 in taxes and fees in Qatar Airways Qsuites

Another way Asia Miles offers amazing value is through its round-the-world award tickets , which are referred to as Oneworld multi-carrier awards .

Cathay Pacific has 3 different award charts and a slew of different routing rules. Here are award charts:

  • Cathay Pacific (Flying Cathay Pacific only)
  • Airline partners  (Flying 1 partner ONLY , e.g., Qantas)
  • Oneworld multi-carrier award chart  (Flying multiple partners, e.g., British Airways, Qantas, AND Qatar Airways)

For round-the-world tickets, we’ll focus on the Oneworld multi-carrier award chart .

Also, its award routing rules are:

  • For Cathay Pacific-operated flights and partner flights (remember, only 1 partner as indicated in award chart #2) , you’re allowed 1 stopover on one-ways and 2 stopovers on round-trips.
  • For Oneworld multi-carrier award flights, you can fly a maximum of 2 partners  when Cathay Pacific is not included . If you include Cathay Pacific in your itinerary, you can fly any number of partners.
  • The maximum distance for Oneworld multi-carrier awards is 50,000 miles.
  • You can make a maximum of 5 stopovers, 2 open jaws, and 2 transfers (layovers).

Hot Tip: Don’t worry if you’re confused — Cathay Pacific has a great award flight calculator you can use to price out your flights.

When utilizing the Oneworld multi-carrier award chart, be sure to click  Multi-City . If you’re not sure whether the itinerary you’re planning is allowed within the rules above, there’s a very easy way to tell. If it violates any of the rules above, you’ll receive this message:

Error Message for Cathay Pacific Asia Miles awards

Here’s one example of how epic your vacation could get:

  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Sydney (SYD) in Qantas business class
  • Sydney (SYD) – Hong Kong (HKG) in Cathay Pacific business class on the Boeing 777
  • Hong Kong (HKG) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) in Cathay Pacific business class on the Boeing 777
  • Bali-Denpasar (DPS) – Kuala Lumpur (KUL) in Malaysia Airlines business class on the Airbus A330
  • Kuala Lumpur (KUL) – London-Heathrow (LHR) in Malaysia Airlines’ brand-new Airbus A350 business class
  • Madrid (MAD) – Santiago, Chile (SCL) in Iberia business class
  • São Paulo (GRU) – Los Angeles (LAX) in American Airlines Flagship business class on the Boeing 787

To sum this up, you would have the chance to fly ~35,000 miles for ~73 hours on 5 different business class products from 4 different airlines between 8 countries with this itinerary. All of this costs 210,000 Asia Miles per person.

The same flights in economy will cost 130,000 Asia Miles per person .

Frankly, this is a jaw-dropping deal. To give you some perspective on how great of a deal this is, flying just to Bali-Denpasar round-trip costs 170,000 Asia Miles per person in business class.

The difference between the complex itinerary above and the simple itinerary is only 40,000 Asia miles in business class. We think this is a no-brainer and could definitely be planning a cultural excursion in all of those countries!

Now you know why we feel that Cathay Pacific Asia Miles presents the absolute best value when building a complex itinerary involving a lot of segments and at least 1 Cathay Pacific flight.

Of course, the challenge is going to be finding all the flight availability at once. With so many different flights on different carriers, it’s best to get started searching for availability early.

For Oneworld carriers , we always recommend using British Airways to find availability. You can also use Qantas for its month-long calendar view of award flights, too. Be sure to write down every single flight number and all the times/dates .

Once you have found all your award availability, call the Asia Miles U.S. office at 866-892-2598.

Earning Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

With 5 transfer partners ( American Express Membership Rewards ,  Brex Rewards ,  Capital One Miles ,  Citi ThankYou Rewards , and  Marriott Bonvoy ), you’ve got lots of transfer options to earn Cathay Pacific Asia Miles.

American Express, Brex, Capital One, and Citi transfer at a 1:1 transfer ratio.

Capital One takes around 36 hours to transfer, while Amex and Chase transfer within 1 business day. Brex transfers take up to 9 business days to process.

Normally, Marriott Bonvoy transfers at a 3:1 ratio and takes about 5 business days. However, if you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, you will receive a bonus of 5,000 Marriott Bonvoy points transferred to the airline. This means transferring 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points will net you 25,000 Asia Miles.

There’s also a Synchrony Bank co-branded Asia Miles credit card for the U.S. market that offers a decent welcome bonus for those who need some extra Cathay Pacific miles. The bonus has been as high as 75,000 miles in the past, so we recommend holding out for an offer similar to that.

Bottom Line: Have lots of Citi ThankYou Points? Looking for a simple booking process done completely online? Like flying Star Alliance? With no fuel surcharges and competitive award rates (78,000 for round-trip economy, 156,000 for round-trip business, and 198,000 for round-trip first), you should definitely consider using Avianca LifeMiles.

Asiana Airlines A380 Business Class

We have 2 main reasons for including United Airlines MileagePlus in this list, even though booking with ANA and Singapore Airlines are superior options, as far as Star Alliance carriers go:

  • A simple booking process
  • Decent (though not the best) award rates for those with Chase Ultimate Rewards points

Here’s what you can expect to pay when booking flights to Bali with United miles (please note that United uses dynamic award pricing):

We like United because the process for booking your award flights is extremely easy; it doesn’t involve any phone calls or visiting any other websites to find award availability. You can basically take care of everything on United’s website.

Check out these great redemptions:

  • Atlanta (ATL) – Istanbul (IST) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way in Turkish Airlines business class from 99,000 United miles + ~$6 in taxes and fees

If you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points to United, you will receive a bonus of 15,000 Marriott Bonvoy points added to your transfer. This means transferring 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points will net you 27,500 United miles.

Recommended United Cards

There are many United credit cards available which we cover in our in-depth guide.

Bottom Line: Booking with United Airlines is very simple and can minimize the headache you’ll face when securing award flights. You won’t be paying much out of pocket, but the awards are going to cost a bit more for the convenience you get.

Delta One Middle Seats

In this guide, we’ve focused pretty heavily on 2 of the 3 major alliances: Oneworld and Star Alliance.

Unfortunately, the SkyTeam alliance doesn’t have many sweet spots nowadays, with rampant devaluations and huge fuel surcharges.

That said, the last method we will mention to fly to Bali with points and miles is with Air France/KLM Flying Blue . With Flying Blue, you can fly partners such as Xiamen, China Southern, China Airlines, Delta, China Eastern, and Korean Air.

If you decide to fly transatlantic, you’re going to be hit with hefty fuel surcharges.

However, if you decide to fly airlines like China Airlines or Korean Air across the Pacific Ocean, you’ll save hundreds of dollars in fuel surcharges.

Air France/KLM Flying Blue removed its award chart and now uses variable award pricing , so it’s difficult to pinpoint a specific cost. Rather, we’ll use a range of mileage costs.

Depending on your route, round-trip economy awards will cost between 68,000 and 92,000 Flying Blue miles, while round-trip business class awards will cost between 170,000 and 230,000 miles.

American Express and Citi have offered transfer bonuses (multiple times) of up to 35% to Flying Blue. This means that a flight award costing 170,000 miles will only cost ~126,000 points round-trip. These transfer bonuses definitely help soften the blow.

You can search for award availability through Air France/KLM and book awards completely online.

Hot Tip: Need alternative ways to optimize Air France/KLM miles? Check out the  best ways to redeem Air France/KLM Flying Blue miles for maximum value .

Here are a few example routes you can book:

  • Boston (BOS) – Seoul (ICN) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way in Korean Air business class for 115,000 Flying Blue miles + ~$145 in taxes and fees
  • Chicago (ORD) – Seoul (ICN) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way in Korean Air business class for 115,000 Flying Blue miles + ~$145 in taxes and fees
  • Dallas (DFW) – Seoul (ICN) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way in Korean Air business class for 115,000 Flying Blue miles + ~$145 in taxes and fees
  • Las Vegas (LAS) – Seoul (ICN) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way in Korean Air business class for 115,000 Flying Blue miles + ~$145 in taxes and fees
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Taipei (TPE) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way in China Airlines business class for 115,000 Flying Blue miles + ~$148 in taxes and fees
  • New York (JFK) – Taipei (TPE) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way in China Airlines business class for 115,000 Flying Blue miles + ~$148 in taxes and fees
  • San Francisco (SFO) – Taipei (TPE) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way in China Airlines business class for 115,000 Flying Blue miles + ~$148 in taxes and fees
  • Seattle (SEA) – Seoul (ICN) – Bali-Denpasar (DPS) one-way in Korean Air business class for 115,000 Flying Blue miles + ~$145 in taxes and fees

Here is the process for booking Air France/KLM Flying Blue awards:

  • Visit Air France’s website .
  • On the top right, click My Account . Log into your Flying Blue account using your email and password .
  • After logging in, click on the top right corner that shows your last name and first initial. Click  Book a Ticket with My Miles
  • Be sure to check off the box that says  You are looking for a flight around these dates. This will make the award calendar show up and will give you a full month’s view of award prices.
  • Select your desired flight and complete your reservation by paying your miles and for any taxes and fees.

Earning Air France/KLM Flying Blue Miles

Even though Air France/KLM Flying Blue Miles aren’t as valuable as the other currencies mentioned above, you’ll have lots of ways to earn them .

Flying Blue is a transfer partner with all of the 4 major transferable currencies:  Chase Ultimate Rewards (1:1), American Express Membership Rewards (1:1), Citi ThankYou Rewards  (1:1), Brex Rewards (1:1), Capital One Miles (1:1), and Marriott Bonvoy (3:1 with a 5,000-mile bonus after transferring 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points).

Chase, Amex, Citi, and Capital One all transfer almost instantly, while Brex takes up to 1 business day.

Lastly, Marriott Bonvoy takes up to 3 business days to transfer points to Flying Blue.

It’s possible to book with airlines like Korean Air, Delta, Asiana Airlines, and Air Canada Aeroplan, but they were generally excluded for at least 1 of the following reasons:

  • High redemption rates
  • High fuel surcharges
  • Other viable alternatives with better routing rules
  • Difficulty in booking flights (e.g., Korean Air SKYPASS for non-family members)

You could also consider flying to Dubai and then to Bali in Emirates’ First Class suites . It will cost you lots of miles, but the experience simply can’t be beaten in terms of luxury and service.

Hot Tip: Looking for a place to stay once you get there? Check out these great boutique hotels in Bali .

There are so many different ways to fly to Bali with points and miles, but it’s hard to go wrong when booking with the options covered in this guide.

While there aren’t any nonstop flights to Bali-Denpasar from the U.S., there are plenty of ways to get there with easy connections in some of the world’s best hub airports.

And, don’t forget that there are many options for tacking on another country before or after your visit to Bali. For example, you could visit Hong Kong and explore Asia’s dynamic financial capital before flying to Bali for a relaxing beach getaway.

We hope we’ve taken a lot of the guesswork out of flying to Bali with points and miles. Now that you know the value to be had, it’s time to start booking and get that trip to one of the world’s most popular beach destinations on your calendar!

Frequently Asked Questions

Which airlines include carrier-imposed surcharges on award flights to bali.

ANA levies around $100 to $150 in round-trip fuel surcharges alone and carries a total of $300 in taxes and fees for round-trip award tickets.

Qatar Airways levies around $500 in fuel surcharges for one-way business class tickets. Generally, American Airlines doesn’t pass these on, while Cathay Pacific Asia Miles does.

Air France/KLM will pass on all fuel surcharges. This includes transatlantic travel, which can be in excess of $1,000.

A few carriers such as China Airlines and Korean Air will levy very reasonable fuel surcharges of $150 or less in each direction.

What is the fewest number of miles you can use to book an economy class award flight to Bali?

You can use Alaska miles to fly in Cathay Pacific economy for 60,000 miles round-trip from the U.S. to Bali via Hong Kong.

After that, you can look at Air France for cheaper economy tickets, but you might need to look hard for the cheapest tickets that start from 68,000 miles. If you travel transatlantic, it won’t help very much due to fuel surcharges of $800 to $1,000.

Finally, consider using Singapore KrisFlyer miles to book West Coast flights to Bali via Singapore for 76,000 miles round-trip.

What is the fewest number of miles required to fly business class to Bali?

Alaska Airlines charges only 100,000 miles for round-trip business class with Cathay Pacific, and those tickets can include stopovers.

The next best is booking with ANA on partners for 136,000 miles round-trip. This includes 1 open-jaw and 1 stopover, allowing you to maximize the value of your miles.

What is the fewest number miles required to fly first class to Bali?

Alaska Airlines only charges 140,000 miles for round-trip first class tickets with Cathay Pacific. However, note that the Hong Kong to Bali segment will book into business class.

Top 5 airlines flying to Bali

Good flight. The food was served a bit late, hence a hurry to finish before landing. Excellent crew and service

Great to have actual hot tastey meal on a flight. Well done

They made me check my carry on even though there was room We un boarded in a strange way but overall it was good

Seating cramped; close to toilet, foul smelling and noisy, very unhygienic and disease risk Free and paid Wi-Fi NOT accessible at all - misleading advertising Very expensive sunglasses disappeared from back seat pouch. Coffee disgusting and cold

It seems paying premium economy does not make difference with economy. No priority boarding, not worthy paying extra$$$ for premium economy.

Every thing was fine. Some ild classical Hindi movies should be add

The premium economy seats were not that great. It could have been more premium than economy seats.

Flights were both delayed. No luggage on arrival for the whole plane and no contact since submitting a PIR.

On the Dubai-Gatwick flight the only meal options were Beef or Chicken. No vegetarian option. This was a surprise. I would usually order in advance but did not this time. Would have been good to know that a vegetarian meal is not available as a standard meal. Thankfully it was just me travelling, but if I’d had my kids with me that would have been a big problem for us.

The customers before boarding the plane from Dubai was HORRENDOUS. The entire Emirates staff had a stick up their bum. The guy at the check in booth was rude. I don’t understand.

No entertainment u less you pay. Wish there were some free movies

Service needs to improve. Air hostess do not register flyers request and we need to keep on repeating our request to them on multiple occasions

The flight was great. We had to purchase extra long seats for the long flight. But overall it was great.

Absolutely terrible delays for 3 hours changed seats after we paid an upgrade on both legs. It appears it’s up to us to request a refund after they down graded our seat. Never again !!

Good but needs to improve cleanliness Coffee serve cold Needs to raise standard serving food Otherwise good

They had superb boarding (started an hour before flight time). Timely pushback from them gate and an early arrival. Flight and service was very comfortable. I wanted to move my flight to an earlier one, only thing was there was no one at emirates in Heathrow to help. Had to call the call the center and pay to change. There were ample seats on the flight though

Superb experience. I hope they bring back the fast track option at Heathrow immigration.

My case was missing a wheel on arrival Heathrow and the staff were unhelpful when i tried to get some compensation stating it was not sufficient damage, i only wish that they at some point have to deal with the same situation it put me in, maybe they would change their attitude but overall it was a good flight

We are satisfied with the cabin crew serviceand the quality of meals served.

Lunch Food was tasteful and had variety. Seat was comfortable. However, when I was reserving my seats during booking, the seat configuration showed was 3-3-3, but when I boarded it was a 2-4-2 configuration? Also during booking, I had also bought travel insurance together with my TG booking. However there was no confirmation of my purchase from Allianz and TG. After several emails with TG contact, sales, reservation and Allianz was i able to confirm my insurance purchase. When the policy was issued, the birth dates of me and my wife were wrongly stated and I had to go through another round of emails with Allianz to get it corrected. Otherwise any claims would be void! It was indeed not a very good booking experience!

Increase the number of available films, including variety. All other aspects were great.

Check in was a disaster. 90 minutes and only 2 economy check in desks open. Had to rush to catch the flight.

I couldnt go on this flight and lost all my money over 1,000 UK Pounds as my visa to Myanmar was not accepted :(

Thai Airways is one of the best airlines in the business. Looking forward to fly again with them.

food poor i said chiken i got pack a pow breakfast lousey .job to explain wot it was ...

Efficient like all the other flights with them. An outstanding budget airline!

Excellent service. departed on time, and arrived ahead of schedule. The whole restrictions around no food/drink is a bit weird even with Covid. Also, no mobiles and iPad use during takeoff and landing is very 2006!

Food quality can be improved for the price of the ticket.

On air services are excellent. The Garuda Lounge at Terminal 3 Soekarno-Hatta International Airport need to have special management attention in cleanliness and the service quality.

I hopefully cancelled this flight and will get a refund. I am disappointed that you did not stop alerts about this flight and seem to think we went on it. It doesn't seem like your company communicates well internally. Also from my end, I hope you have some clout to resolve things. That has to be part of the package you offer. Thank You, William Ashley

At CGK, need to walk from one gate all the way to the other gate to board the plane. Which makes me wonder, why can’t we just gather at the correct gate in the first place?

The food from Lagos to Amsterdam was was very poor compared to AMS-YYZ

The flight was delayed for 2 hrs. Because they didn’t have a crew to fly. And it is not a first time for klm to do that. Last time they cancelled my filght and rebooked me 3 days later. Not reliable airline

Booked connecting flights with KlM. My serving flight was the furthest part of the airport. On arrival in Zurich. My two cases arrived but only one carry on belong to my son. His three suitcase didn't arrive. After enquiring we discovered they were still in Amsterdam. We landed at 11.12. We eventually left the airport just after one.

Seats are fair enough for medium tall people. Good food all the trip. Fight attendances are warm

I thought KLM was the best airline but the Lima - Amsterdam was 1 hours late, the Brussels - Amsterdam was 2.30 hours late and the Amsterdam - Lima was 30 minutes late

The food was ok. The crew seemed like they were cranky. I had one guy get mad at me for passing in between the storage area to get to the other toilet. I can understand if it's not allowed but reprimanding me like I'm a student saying "This is the last time!" was not appropriate. During my meal time, there was a French family around me. No problems there but when we usually have meals, they are supposed to put their chair in the upright position. These people did not do it and the steward did not tell them to raise their seat in the upright position. However, I was told to do so! So, me and another person next to me had to eat with the monitor almost touching our faces. Furthermore, a lady in front of me was putting her feet up and preventing another elder passenger from putting her seat back. To make it worse, she was continuously hitting her back into her seat, shaking my monitor while I was watching a movie. A crew member did speak to her about it but then she accused me of pushing her seat forward! The crew member gave me a death stare and told me to stop pushing the seat forward. I did not even touch her seat at all, if I did, she would know it. Her boyfriend also stood up and tried to push her seat even further past the maximum decline to no avail. None of these people were reprimanded but the steward, some bald guy, was extremely friendly with them and did not even try to instruct them to do anything until it was time to land. I resisted the urge to really argue with them because I would have obviously been seen as the aggressor (I have no idea why). I hardly said anything on this flight except "more wine please" and "sorry" if I bumped into someone accidentally. Overall, it was an annoying flight and I had to resist the urge to yell at the steward and the people he was overly friendly with. The happiest moment of this flight was leaving it.

Overall a good experience. We were disappointed when we had to check our carry on due to the plane being full. KLM hadn’t notified us and we had valuable items in the carry on but they still made us check it. Some of the food was great and some was mediocre. Crew is really kind and funny.

One of the vstewardeses wanted to bump me of the plane for absolutely nothing. There is CCTV in the plane ans everything can be verified. Very disappointing , you all will see, o other 5 years and the passangers who does not smile to flight attendent will be bumped off...

The worst airline. Cancelled flight 30 min before boarding and rebooked on flight after 3 days.

It was nice to be on a legacy airline, people try at least.

Thank you so much for two amazing weeks in Bali, Tina! From the first day on Tina arranged everything and answered every question I had during my stay. Everything was perfectly organized. My personal highlights which I can definitely recommend are:

– Private boat tour around the southern islands & snorkeling with manta rays – Gili Islands – Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking – Ubud waterfalls, coffee € tea farm, monkey forest – Surfing

Thanks for all the organization and good recommendations, Tina!

We just spend two great weeks in Bali with Tina as our travel agent and everything was perfectly organized so we didn’t have to worry about anything. Always reachable when having questions, Tina made it possible to enjoy every trip. Our L uxury Bali holidays were amazing!!

Starting with the sunrise on the top of Mount Batur, relaxing afterwards at hot spring, snorkeling with Manta rays, taking a trip trough Ubud, enjoying the landscape during a Rafting & Quad tour and close holidays at the beautiful Gili Islands…everything was fantastic, no regrets. Thanks!!

Went to Mt. Batur with Tina and everything was well coordinated. Tina was on-point with communication prior to the trip and made sure were having a great time during the trip itself! We also went to a spa after and another unplanned tourist spot which was breathtaking.

Bali is so beautiful and hiking up a volcano to see the sun rise was a once in a lifetime experience. Tina made the process smooth, super fun and enjoyable. Don’t even bother trying to pinch pennies with other tour providers, it’s simply not worth the chance of something going wrong and ruining what would be an amazing holiday experience. Overall this trip was perfectly planned and executed, with a lot of fun, great memories and amazing value. Highly recommended!

The 8 Best Ways to Get to Bali on Points and Miles

Eric Rosen

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Bali has everything you could want in a vacation destination — amazing culture, wonderful people, beautiful villages, world-class hotels and some of the coolest beaches in Asia. No wonder it's known as the "island of the gods."

Bali experienced a tourism bump after the release of the movie version of Eat, Pray, Love , but don't let the tourist throngs throw you. This 2,200-square-mile slice of paradise is well worth a visit in its own right. While it's a phenomenal place to spend some of those hard-earned hotel points , today, we'll focus on all the ways to use your airline miles to get there. Mileage amounts listed are for travel to/from the continental US.

first class trip to bali

Just a quick note: I also traveled to the Indonesian island of Sumba to visit Travel + Leisure 's 2016 #1 resort in the world, Nihi Sumba , and had an amazing experience . There's one daily nonstop flight from Bali to Sumba on Garuda Indonesia that costs about $150 round-trip. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any award availability using SkyTeam partner miles like those of Delta or Korean Air for that flight, but if you're already planning on being in Bali, it's a cheap enough jaunt to hop over to Nihiwatu and experience this one-of-a-kind place.

Now, on to the airline and mileage options.

Airlines That Fly to Bali

The main airport on Bali is Ngura Rai International Airport, abbreviated as DPS because it is just outside the capital city of Denpasar. It is located toward the southern tip of the island near many of the beach resorts, though it's bit of a drive from some of the cultural sights and resorts up in Ubud.

Here are the major airlines currently flying there.

  • Air Asia from various other destinations in Asia including Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and Singapore (SIN)
  • Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong (HKG)
  • Cebu Pacific from Manila (MNL)
  • China Airlines from Taipei (TPE)
  • China Eastern from Beijing (PEK) and Shanghai (PVG)
  • China Southern from Guangzhou (CAN) and Shenzhen (SZX)
  • Emirates from Dubai (DXB)
  • EVA Air from Taipei (TPE)
  • Garuda Indonesia from various destinations in Asia
  • Hong Kong Airlines from Hong Kong (HKG)
  • Jetstar from various destinations in Asia and Australia
  • KLM from Amsterdam (AMS) via Singapore (SIN)
  • Korean Air from Seoul (ICN)
  • Malaysia Airlines from Kuala Lumpur (KUL)
  • Philippine Airlines from Manila (MNL)
  • Qantas from Sydney (SYD)
  • Qatar Airways from Doha (DOH)
  • Singapore Airlines, Scoot and Silk Air from Singapore (SIN)
  • Thai from Bangkok (BKK)
  • Virgin Australia from Brisbane (BNE) and Sydney (SYD)
  • Xiamen Airlines from Xiamen (XMN)

As you can see, there are quite a few options, but there are some missing ones as well given Bali's location and connections to/from the US. For example, though neither ANA nor JAL fly to Bali from Tokyo Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND), you could fly to Tokyo from the US then connect there and continue on to Hong Kong and fly Cathay Pacific to Bali, or to Bangkok (BKK) and fly THAI from there.

For that reason, instead of focusing on just a few airlines and how they fly to Bali, for this guide, let's pick a few of the best mileage currencies for getting from the US to Bali whether on a single carrier or an award with a mix of airlines.

Mileage Table

First, let's look at the various miles and points you can use and the airlines to which they apply that you might be interested in flying to Bali. Note that I haven't listed all the partners of each program, only the ones on which it would be possible to use these specific miles to fly all the way to Bali or as part of an award containing a mix of carriers.

Mileage and Points Options

That's a lot of numbers to keep track of, but here are some of the best mileage programs for flying to Bali including ideas of how to put each to use, as well as their major transfer partners.

1. Aeroplan

first class trip to bali

Aeroplan is the mileage program of Air Canada, so you can use these miles to fly any number of Star Alliance carriers including Air Canada, ANA, Asiana, EVA, Singapore, Thai and United. The program is a transfer partner of both American Express Membership Rewards (at a 1:1 ratio) as well as Starwood Preferred Guest, and when you transfer SPG points in 20,000-point increments, you get a 5,000-mile bonus. Aeroplan also regularly offers bonuses like this one on transfers from its other partners.

Here's how many miles you'll need from the continental US to Bali each way:

  • Economy: 45,000 miles
  • Premium Economy: 65,000 miles
  • Business: 77,500 miles
  • First: 107,500 miles

Now for the fun part: mixing and matching awards. As you might have noted from the list of airlines flying to Bali above, the only Star Alliance carriers that fly both to the US as well as to Bali are EVA and Singapore Airlines. That would seem to limit your options, but you can also mix up your carriers and fly, say, ANA to Singapore via Tokyo then Singapore Airlines on to Bali like in this example.

first class trip to bali

Or you could fly United to Taipei, EVA to Bangkok and Thai to Bali.

first class trip to bali

Or, due to the program's lax routing rules, you could even fly via Europe, like with this business-class itinerary that includes a leg on Lufthansa's A350 .

first class trip to bali

Aeroplan has a pretty great Star Alliance search engine, so if you're flexible and have a bit of time to search, you're bound to find some interesting options. Just beware that taxes and fees can be several hundred dollars on some airlines — notably Air Canada's own flights and those on European partners like Lufthansa and Swiss.

2. Alaska Airlines

first class trip to bali

Alaska's Mileage Plan program is a bit of an odd animal in that it has individual award charts for each of its partners. Not only that, but you can't mix carriers on awards except for Alaska and one other partner. So no flying both JAL and Cathay Pacific on the same award, for example. Travel must also originate or terminate in the US. Finally, according to its charts and routing rules , Alaska will only let you book awards to Asia on the following carriers:

  • American Airlines

Cathay Pacific

  • Hainan Airlines
  • Singapore Airlines (hopefully eventually)

Of the carriers you can book, only Cathay, Emirates and Korean fly to Bali themselves, so those are the three airlines to examine. Here are the miles you'll need to fly each one-way from the US to Bali. Keep in mind that Alaska is a transfer partner of Starwood Preferred Guest, and you get a 5,000-mile bonus on transfers of 20,000 points.

Cathay Pacific flies to Boston (BOS), Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), San Francisco (SFO), Toronto (YYZ) and Vancouver (YVR) and Washington Dulles (IAD) in September 2018 . From Hong Kong (HKG), the airline operates a daily nonstop flight to Bali, while its subsidiary, Dragonair, operates a non-stop on Thursdays and Sundays.

  • Economy: 30,000 miles
  • Premium Economy: 35,000 miles
  • Business: 50,000 miles
  • First: 70,000 miles (though it'll just be business on the HKG-DPS leg)

first class trip to bali

Emirates is based in Dubai (DXB) and operates a mix of A380s and 777s on its routes to both the US and 777s to Bali. It currently has 12 US destinations including Boston (BOS), Chicago (ORD), Dallas (DFW), Houston (IAH), Los Angeles (LAX), New York (JFK), San Francisco (SFO) and Washington (IAD) among others.

Unfortunately, Alaska devalued its Emirates award charts with no notice in 2016 , so there aren't bargains to be had anymore:

  • Economy: 52,500 miles
  • Business: 105,000 miles
  • First: 180,000 miles

But award availability is decent.

first class trip to bali

Korean Air is a member of SkyTeam, but it's also non-alliance partners with Alaska. It flies from Seoul (ICN) to Atlanta (ATL), Chicago (ORD), Dallas (DFW), Houston (IAH), Las Vegas (LAS), Los Angeles (LAX), New York (JFK), San Francisco (SFO), Seattle (SEA) and Washington (IAD).

Korean operates one non-stop to Bali daily, with a second on Thursdays and Sundays. Alaska will charge you the following miles each way to fly it to Bali.

  • Economy: 85,000 miles
  • Business: 120,000 miles

Not such a great deal, and you're better off using Delta SkyMiles for this particular option, as you will see below.

3. American AAdvantage

first class trip to bali

American Airlines is a member of Oneworld, so you can use its AAdvantage miles to fly several different carriers to Bali. One thing to note, though, is that American has some strict award routing rules . The major one to keep in mind for getting to Bali, which is in the AAdvantage award chart's Asia 2 region, is that you can only transit via another destination in Asia 1, which includes Japan and Korea, or Asia 2, which includes most of Southeast Asia as well as China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

So that does limit you somewhat, in that you couldn't use AAdvantage miles to fly from the US to Bali via Doha (DOH) on Qatar Airways, unfortunately like in this example.

first class trip to bali

But you can still fly on a mix of carriers like American, Cathay Pacific, JAL and Malaysia Airlines via hubs in Asia.

first class trip to bali

Here's the amount of miles you'll need for each class of service:

  • Economy: 37,500 miles
  • Business: 70,000 miles
  • First: 110,000 miles

Now for the other drawback. American's website doesn't display award availability for JAL, Malaysia Airlines or Cathay Pacific, so I'd suggest using BritishAirways.com instead. It can be a bit clunky, but it does a good job at rounding up Oneworld award availability.

Here, for example, is a mixed award on Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong in business class (or premium economy if you wanted to use your Alaska miles).

first class trip to bali

Now, let's say you wanted to try a couple different carriers or throw JAL into the mix since it's got such fantastic business-class and first-class seats . Well, this is where BA's search engine fails since it seems to be a bit too complicated. So in order to find that, I'd suggest looking segment by segment, first finding the award from the US to Tokyo like these:

first class trip to bali

And then searching Tokyo (NRT)-Bali (DPS) separately for an award with connecting flights on Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong or Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur (KUL). That's the tricky part, finding both the flights to/from the US and a layover less than 24 hours in each of the other cities so that it all books out as a single award. If you do, though, you can call American to book it all together.

American AAdvantage is a transfer partner of Starwood Preferred Guest.

first class trip to bali

ANA, or All Nippon Airways, is one of the two major carriers in Japan. Though ANA doesn't fly to Bali itself, many of its Star Alliance partners do. The airline is also partners with other carriers like Garuda, but unfortunately you can't mix alliance and non-alliance carriers on awards with ANA. You can, however, mix Star Alliance carriers and fly combinations like United, ANA, EVA, Thai and more. Not only are ANA's redemption rates quite low, but its mileage program is also a transfer partner of both American Express Membership Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest.

first class trip to bali

Just note that you'll have to book awards round-trip in the amounts listed below...

  • Economy: 55,000-80,000
  • Business: 100,000-136,000
  • First: 195,000-240,000

The ANA award search is generally pretty good at finding award space, but the interface can be very byzantine, so instead, I'd suggest using Aeroplan to narrow down your search before plugging the specifics into the ANA search engine and booking from there. This might also be a good strategy because, though I could find Star Alliance awards using Aeroplan's and United's websites, they did not show up with ANA's web search. However, the phone agent I spoke to was able to see the same award availability I'd found on the other two sites, so you might end up having to call in to book your award.

5. Delta SkyMiles

Delta removed its award charts from its site back in 2015 and keeps surreptitiously raising partner award levels , but we're still able to piece together roughly how many miles you'd need to fly its partners in economy or business class from the US to Bali each way, as you can see in the below examples. The airline's SkyMiles program is a transfer partner of both Amex Membership Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest. Here's how many miles you'll need each way from the US to Bali — and remember, you can't book first-class awards on partners using Delta miles:

  • Economy: At least 40,000 miles (usually 45,000-65,000 miles)
  • Business: At least 80,000 miles (usually it's 95,000 miles or above, though)

Of Delta's SkyTeam partners, the ones that fly from the US to Bali include China Airlines from Taipei (TPE), China Eastern from Beijing (PEK) and Shanghai (PVG), China Southern from Guangzhou (CAN) and Shenzhen (SZX), and Korean Air from Seoul (ICN). All four airlines typically display decent award availability to/from the US and continuing on from their hubs to Bali. In the US, China Airlines, China Eastern and China Southern all fly to Los Angeles (LAX), New York (JFK) and San Francisco (SFO). Some awards pricing out at the saver level even transited through Sydney (SYD).

first class trip to bali

The other major option to look into is Garuda Indonesia. Though it doesn't currently fly to the US, the airline has announced plans to launch a route from its hub in Jakarta (CGK) to Los Angeles (LAX) via Tokyo (NRT), so that might be another option.

As of publish time, the airline operates over a dozen flights daily to Bali from its hub in Jakarta as well as a few nonstop routes from international destinations. For example, there's a daily nonstop flight from Tokyo Narita, as well as a nonstop six days a week (the flight lays over in Jakarta on Wednesdays) from Seoul (ICN). That makes Garuda a good mix-and-match connecting partner with Delta and Korean Air flights from either destination thanks to those two airlines' flights.

I would suggest searching for awards on Delta.com since the site's award search engine tends to be pretty good at pulling up SkyTeam award availability for all four of these carriers as well as Delta's own flights. When you do search, you're likely to come up with a mix of carriers. For instance, here's an award with flights from New York (JFK) to Guangzhou (CAN) and on to Bali on China Southern with both economy and business availability.

first class trip to bali

Interestingly enough, most of the rock-bottom 40,000-mile saver availability I'm finding actually routes you through Australia on Delta's own Los Angeles-Sydney flight then routes you to Bali on Garuda from there. Personally, I'd rather spend 5,000 more miles to save a lot of travel time, though.

first class trip to bali

And if you have some flexibility, there are some awards on a mix of Delta and Korean, including on from Detroit (DTW) to Seoul (ICN) on Delta's A350 flight for that 40,000-mile level in economy and about 105,000 miles in business.

first class trip to bali

And just for variety, here's a one-way flight on the return from Bali to Seattle (SEA) via Tokyo Narita (NRT) on a mix of Garuda and Delta with availability in both economy and business class.

first class trip to bali

The mix of carriers will depend on your flight dates. If there's one in particular you want to fly, or one you want to avoid, I would suggest double-checking award availability by searching segment by segment and seeing if different awards show up. If they do and you can't get the entire itinerary to price out properly with your search, you can call Delta with the specific flights and dates and ask a phone agent to book it for you. That said, Delta.com does a good job at pulling in award availability and giving you all the options.

6. Korean Air SkyPass

first class trip to bali

Korean Air is another SkyTeam member, and it makes this list for a few reasons. First, it's a transfer partner of both Chase Ultimate Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest , so there are some great options to top up your account. Second, award availability on Korean Air itself seems to be back to its usual great availability, making it one of the best choices for getting from the US to Bali.

If you're interested in using Korean Air SkyPass miles to fly Korean Air itself to Bali, then your best bet for an award search is on Korean's site . Here's how many miles you'll need for Korean's own flights:

  • Economy: 42,500 miles
  • Business: 75,000 miles
  • First: 95,000 miles

Just note that these mileage amounts are for Korean's off-peak (i.e., saver-level) awards, but that peak awards like over the summer can be much higher. Here's a sample round-trip award from Los Angeles (LAX) to Bali in August/September — as you can see, there is plenty of award availability on several flights.

first class trip to bali

TPG actually transferred part of the 100,000-point sign-up bonus from getting the Chase Sapphire Reserve (the bonus has since been lowered) to his Korean SkyPass account for a first-class redemption from Bali to New York via Seoul.

When booking partner awards using Korean Air miles, the one-way price is the same as the round-trip price, so essentially, you should only book round-trip awards. Here's how many miles you'll need:

  • Economy: 90,000 miles
  • Business: 155,000 miles
  • First: 200,000 miles

Here's a sample economy award from Atlanta (ATL) to Bali on a mix of Korean, Delta and Xiamen. Look at those taxes and fees, though!

first class trip to bali

I also find Korean's SkyTeam award search to be a bit wonky, so I prefer to use Delta.com for searches on other carriers, and then call in to SkyPass to put awards on hold and book from there.

7. Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

first class trip to bali

Although Singapore recently made it (somewhat) possible to book partner awards online using KrisFlyer miles, it's still a bit of a rigmarole. However, the program can be an especially good option for flying to Asia, including Bali, on Singapore Airlines itself for a couple reasons.

First, the program is a 1:1 transfer partner of Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest, so there are a ton of ways to stock your account with miles. Just note that transfers aren't instantaneous. Second, Singapore makes more awards available to its own KrisFlyer members, especially close to travel dates.

Singapore flies from Los Angeles (LAX) to both Tokyo (NRT) and Seoul (ICN) then on to Singapore (SIN) from either; from San Francisco (SFO) to Hong Kong (HKG) and Singapore; and from New York (JFK) to Singapore via Frankfurt (FRA). Once in Singapore, you can continue on one of the airline's several daily flights to Bali.

If using KrisFlyer miles, use SingaporeAir.com to search for awards. Per Singapore's award chart, here's how many miles you'll need for awards on Singapore itself:

West Coast…

  • Economy: 38,000 miles
  • Business: 88,000 miles
  • First: 118,000 miles

And from the East Coast…

  • Economy: 40,000 miles
  • Premium Economy: 70,000 miles
  • Business: 92,000 miles
  • First: 120,000 miles

Here's a sample business-class award using KrisFlyer miles from San Francisco to Bali via Hong Kong and Singapore.

8. United MileagePlus

Though United devalued its award charts a while back, including raising prices on premium awards on both its own flights and those of its partners, its MileagePlus program might still be a good option for some folks. That's because it's a 1:1 instant transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards, so it's easy to keep that mileage balance high. It's also a transfer partner of SPG, but at an unattractive ratio of 2 Starpoints to 1 United mile.

Like Air Canada's Aeroplan, using United miles gives you access to awards across the Star Alliance, including on carriers like ANA out of Japan, Asiana out of South Korea and EVA out of Taiwan.

first class trip to bali

I'll keep this entry brief because we already discussed these options in the Aeroplan section above, and as you can see there, there are plenty of options to mix and match carriers according to your schedule and preferences.

United will charge you the following amounts of miles to get from the US to Bali each way. Partner awards in business and first class cost a lot more than awards where the transpacific flight is on United itself:

  • Economy: 40,000
  • Business: 75,000-90,000
  • First: 95,000-140,000

While United.com and Aeroplan.com tend to show the same award availability, there are a couple of differences. Namely, United does not show Singapore Airlines award space whereas Aeroplan does. So if you're looking to use your miles on that particular partner, you're better off searching Aeroplan then calling United with the flight numbers and details.

That said, the search engine pulls in almost all other Star Alliance award availability, and you're likely to find tons of awards on a mix of carriers including EVA and Singapore.

first class trip to bali

If you do find an itinerary where the transpacific segment is on United, you can expect to pay far fewer miles in those premium cabins.

first class trip to bali

Bottom Line

Although Bali is about as far from the US as you can get with limited one-stop options available, thanks to its popularity as a resort destination, there are plenty of ways to combine airlines and points and miles to book tickets there, including in premium classes of service.

How to Plan a Trip to Bali

If you are looking for a dream holiday destination, then Bali meets most people's expectations. From various luxury beach villas with infinity pools, rainforest hotels, and one-eighty cliff-clubs and bars, to the numerous beautiful beaches, rice-terraced fields, and top-class restaurants and food, Bali can fulfill all your holiday dreams.

Bali is also a favorite place for all kinds of water sports, including swimming, diving, surfing, snorkeling, and dolphin watching. As a sacred place of yoga and meditation, which draws people to experience it, Balinese culture was impacted greatly by Hinduism.

The below travel information will help you plan your dream trip to Bali.

Bali's Travel Policy and Restrictions

Entry policy: International travelers can visit Bali and the rest of Indonesia now, and most travel restrictions have been lifted. Travelers who are fully vaccinated do not need to undergo quarantine and can enter Indonesia without a PCR test before and upon arrival. Read more about Bali travel restrictions.

Visa policy: Nationals of many countries can obtain a visa on arrival (VOA), including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States .

Best Times to Visit Bali

Bali can be visited all year round. The weather of Bali can be divided into two seasons: wet season and dry season . The ideal time to visit Bali during the dry season, which is from April to October . July and August are the busiest times in Bali. So, if you don't want to join the crowds, just avoid these two months.

The dry season (high season): April to October, with less rainfall, is the best season for surfing, diving, snorkeling, mountain hiking, and bike riding. During this half of the year, there are many local festivals, which are good times to enjoy cultural activities. For example, the Bali Art Festival, held from mid-June to mid-July, is very attractive to visitors.

The wet season (off-season): November to March is the rainy season. Although there is much rainfall, humid air and many mosquitoes, most activities can be carried out except for the volcano hiking. As most of these five months are the off-season for tourism, flight and hotel prices are relatively cheap, and the price of tour products and activities is also be discounted. It is a good time to save money.

During the Christmas and New Year holidays and Chinese New Year, the number of visitors rises sharply. Hotel rooms are easily fully-booked in these two periods, and reservations need to be made 1–3 months in advance.

Best Places to Visit in Bali

With over 5,000 square kilometers (over 2,000 square miles), there are many places you can visit in Bali. In general, tourism in Bali can be divided into three regions: southern , northern/eastern , and central .

  • The northern and eastern parts are good for mountain climbing, hiking, volcano adventures, and diving.
  • Central Bali is well-known for its village scenery, terraced rice fields, arts, and cultural towns.
  • Southern Bali has the best places for beach time, sunbathing, surfing, and various water sports.

You can choose which region to visit based on your interests.

Southern Bali (Nusa Duo, Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu)

The south of Bali is the top destination area for most visitors. It has charming sea views and plentiful water activities.

Nosa (Nusa) Dua — Honeymoons, Family/Kids-Friendly, Golf Courses

Located on Bali's southern shores, Nusa Dua is well known for its many kinds of beach resorts and clean white sand. There is an 18-hole golf course at Nusa Dua. Compared to other beaches of Bali, Nusa Dua is much quieter and safer for families with kids. The beach has less small coral and less gravel, which makes it a good spot for paddling, bare foot fun, and running.

Another top attraction in Nusa Dua is Pura Gegar temple. This Balinese temple is located on a cliff, and you need to walk up a small path to get to the temple. The temple is surrounded by trunk trees and it is a fantastic view point for overlooking the sea.

Spend a half day to go Shopping at Bali Collections. There are various souvenirs shops at Bali Collections, where you can buy all kinds of local arts and crafts at reasonable prices.

For honeymoon travelers, we recommend you have high tea at St. Regis. It is a gift to yourselves. Having some high afternoon tea and finger food, cakes, and dainty sandwiches in a top-class restaurant in Bali's most famous high-end resort can be a really romantic memory-making treat.

Seminyak — Beautiful Beach Sunsets, Luxury Resorts

Located on Bali's southern coast, Seminyak is well-known for its beautiful beaches, delicious food, and luxury resorts and villas. The night life of Seminyak is well-known, as there are many high-end clubs, bars, restaurants, and shopping malls. The beach sunset there attracts many photography lovers.

Learning how to surf from Seminyak or Double Six Beach is a rewarding experience. The inviting waves there make it a good spot to learn surfing. Join a class to become a surfer.

Joining a cooking class is another popular activity in Seminyak. Try to make Balinese favorites like satay, gado gado salad, and spicy salads with the local chef. It will be an unforgettable experience on your Bali trip.

To learn more about Indonesian culture and history in Seminyak, you can explore the Palace and Museum, including Puri Agung (the Palace of Amlapura), Budakling Village, Tirta Gangga Royal Water Palace, and Lontar Museum.

Bukit Peninsula (Uluwatu) — Snorkeling, Surfing, Rock formations

Located at the southernmost point of Bali, Bukit Peninsula is also known as Uluwatu, which is actually only part of the Bukit Peninsula. It is well-known for its world-class surf breaks and white sand beaches. On the beach of Uluwatu, you can see a stunning beach with unrivalled views over the Indian Ocean.

Uluwatu is also a good place for surfing and snorkeling lovers. At high tide, the waves can reach heights of 5–8 meters, which offers great conditions for professional surfing. The dramatic cliffs that plunge into the crystal blue waters make it a good place for snorkeling and swimming.

Discover real reviews of Highlights Travel Family 's best-rated service across trusted platforms.

Canggu — Surfing, Sea Temple, natural scenery

Canggu used to be a fisherman village, and now it has become one of the most popular destinations in Bali. The laid-back town is surrounded by green rice fields. The picturesque views, various activities, and peaceful vibes are the highlights of Canggu. People come to Canggu for surfing, hiking the active volcano, enjoying the beautiful sunset, and tasting delicious food. Its easy-to-surf waves, and cheaper accommodation prices attract numerous backpackers.

Another must-visit attraction in Canggu is the Pura Tanah Lot Sea Temple. Built on a rocky islet and surrounded by crashing waves, the sea temple looks awesome with its spectacular seaside setting, especially at sunset. It is a one of the most sacred of all the island's sea temples for the Balinese people.

Central Bali (Ubud)

The top-visited region in central Bali is Ubud. There is a saying that those who don't visit Ubud are not really visiting Bali.

Ubud Town Area — Natural Scenery, Culture, History, and Art

Located in the center of Bali Island, Ubud is rich in natural resources and unique culture. The famous film Eat, Pray, Love was set near the rice terraces outside the Ubud Town. Besides the natural scenery, Ubud is also well known for its historical temples, ancient buildings, traditional local dancing, and hand-made arts and crafts.

Spend some hours to explore Sukarno Museum and the Pakerisan River Area to learn more about local culture and historical sites, where three ancient temples and monuments are located. The monuments and temples were recently listed as a World Heritage site.

Visit a Brahman in the house of the pedanda (high priest), where you will see how a large gebogan (flower, fruit, and cake offering) is carried to the temple to be blessed. The ancient village of Mas was a former royal residence. The rice terraced fields around the village are the top must-visit attraction in Ubud. Try to walk the small roads along the paddy fields and experience the quiet life there.

Spend half a day to explore Monkey Forest if you are traveling with kids. It is a funny activity to "explore" using paved pathways through the thick forests of giant banyan and other jungle trees.

The Ubud market is also a must-visit if you are traveling to Bali for the first time. There you can buy leather goods, clothes, handicrafts, musical instruments, local fruits, and many other souvenirs at reasonable prices.

Northern and Eastern Bali

Northern and eastern Bali are well-known for their rich natural attractions including hiking and volcano exploring. The Agung Volcano, the highest peak of Bali Island in the east, and the Jingdamani Volcano in the north are the favorite places for mountaineers who love adventure and excitement.

The most famous beach in the north of Bali is Lovina Beach, where you can have the opportunity to see rare wild dolphins.

How Long to Stay in Bali?

For most tourists coming to Bali, 5–8 days is a good length of stay to visit the highlights of Bali. For honeymoon tourists, such a trip deserves more days to enjoy the relaxed and romantic activities in Bali, which typically need 10–15 days. The following are some of the most popular tour arrangements.

How to Get to and around Bali

Getting to bali.

The most popular way to get to Bali is by flight. There is only one airport in Bali: Denpasar International Airport, which is also called Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Travelers from the USA are suggested to go Bangkok, Hong Kong, or Doha as stopover places before flying to Bali. It takes about 20–23 hours from NY or LA.

There are no direct flights operating between Bali and the main cities in Europe. Travelers from Europe are suggested to go to Singapore, Dubai, or Kuala Lumpur as stopover places before flying to Bali. For travelers from Australia, there are directs flights from Perth, Melbourne, and Sydney, which take about 3, 6, and 6 hours respectively.

Getting around Bali

Hiring a Private Car and Guide

There is not much public transport on Bali's islands. Local people rely on their scooters to travel around the island. If you are looking to have a comfortable travel experience, you'd better hire a private car, driver, and guide, who can give you the best travel advice in Bali. Contact us to arrange a private car service in Bali.

Hiring a taxi is the most expensive way to get around Bali. Blue Birds Taxis is the main taxi company in Bali.

By Renting a Scooter

If you are good at scooter riding and don't have too much luggage, then riding a scooter can be another option. It costs about 4–6 USD to rent a scooter per day. You can drive the scooter to the place you like in Bali.

Travel Costs for Bali

For most Western visitors, Bali is an affordable and reasonably-priced travel destination, typical of Southeast Asia. The travel costs in Bali greatly depend on personal preferences.

Bali offers everything from low priced homestays to luxury resorts, cheap street food to top-class restaurants. And many beaches and attractions are free to visit in Bali.

For tight budget or backpackers, 25–30 USD per day is a good amount to stay in a hostel, eat local street food, and travel by taxi or rent a scooter.

If you are planning to stay in an air-conditioned private room of a guesthouse, a cheap villa or hotel, and enjoy meals at sit-down Western restaurants, you need to spend 60–100 USD per day. On this budget, you can hire a private car or take a taxi to get around.

If you are going to spend over 100 USD per day, you can stay in hotels, nice resorts, and villas. Bali has some of the most luxurious hotels in the world. You can enjoy most of the top-class activities and services on the island with this budget.

Tour activity costs in Bali range from 10–20 USD. Entry tickets to temples or other historical sites range from 1–5 USD. A yoga class will cost you about 6–10 USD and cooking class will cost about 20 USD. Hiking on Mount Batur will cost about 20 USD.

  • The Ultimate Bali Travel Guide for First Timers

Floating temple at Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, Bali

To be honest with you I knew almost nothing about Bali before I visited. Sure, I’ve seen a million pictures of this dream island, I knew that every proper Instagrammer had been there at least once and I saw Eat, Pray, Love, but that was it.

If you are like me, I have some good news for you: this Bali travel guide for first-timers is everything you’re gonna need! In this post, I put together everything you need to know if you are traveling to Bali for the first time. So let’s dive in!

* Disclosure: This post contains a few affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission, at no cost to you, if you make a purchase through my link. *

The Ultimate Bali Travel Guide for First Timers

Table of Contents

Bali is located in the Indian Ocean, it’s by far the most famous of the more than 17,000 islands of Indonesia. The island sits east of Java (the most populous island in the world) and west of Lombok.

I know it seems like a tiny island on the map but actually, Bali is pretty big: the distance is 145 km from west to east and 85 km from north to south. Apart from the main island, the Nusa Islands (Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida) also belong to Bali.

Bali is home to more than 4.3 million people. About 90% of the population are Balinese, the other ethnic groups are Javanese, Baliaga, and Madurese.

The official language is Indonesian, but many people use the Balinese language in everyday life. English is widely used as well due to the high level of tourism.

Indonesia is the biggest Muslim country in the world, accounting for 13% of the world’s total Muslims. One of the most interesting facts about Bali is that it’s the only exception, as the island is the only Hindu island in Indonesia.

Actually, this is not the standard Hindu religion, it’s rather a Balinese Hinduism: it’s kind of a mixture of local beliefs and Hindu influences.

Balinese people live in a magic world of people, spirits, gods, and demons. I was so surprised to see how deeply religious they are! There are over 20,000 temples in Bali and you can’t go anywhere without seeing countless offerings to the gods and spirits.

They seriously believe in karma, that life is governed by a system of cause and effect, action, and reaction. Their religion and culture are really interesting so try to learn about them as much as you can while you are there!

Canang Sari, daily offerings in Bali

Although Bali used to have a free visa if you were visiting for less than 30 days, unfortunately, it’s no longer available.

They have a new Visa on Arrival (VoA) in place, and more than 90 countries can apply for this type of visa. In case you are coming from another country, you will need to apply for a different visa so make sure to check this in advance.

This new VoA costs 500,000 IDR ($33 US) and you can stay with this on the island for a maximum of 30 days. The visa can be extended once for another 30 days (this has an additional cost of course).

You can purchase the visa online in advance which I would strongly recommend. One thing you need to be aware of is that the visa must be used within 90 days from the date of issue, so don’t buy it earlier than 3 months from your travel date. Also, make sure to only purchase from the official website !

Don’t worry, if you can’t buy the visa online (the website doesn’t always work properly), you will still be able to do it at the airport after arrival. You’ll just have to wait in line first for the visa before proceeding to immigration.

Money in Bali

The official local currency in Bali is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR or Rp). The amounts in rupiah are usually very large because of all the zeros. $1 US is around 15,200 IDR.

Therefore the prices are often given with the thousands implied and left off of the end. So when someone says “one hundred”, they most likely mean 100,000 IDR (around $6.5 US).

Cash is the king in Bali, therefore you always need to carry around some cash in your pocket. You can generally pay with credit cards at most of the hotels and cafes in the urban area but you will need cash for everything else.

The largest denomination is the 100,000 IDR banknote so your wallet will always be stuffed with a lot of banknotes. Make sure you don’t bring your tiniest wallet with you!

Indonesian rupiah

You can easily find ATMs in the popular travel hubs but once you are out you will have a hard time finding a machine in the countryside. So it’s better to stack up on cash while you are in a more touristy area.

ATMs typically charge you a transaction fee for every transaction. Fortunately, it’s not that much but the bad news is that there is a daily withdrawal limit.

It can be different depending on what kind of ATM you use but it’s usually between 1.5-2.5 million IDR (around $100-170 US). So basically you have to pick up cash from an ATM almost every day (or you can use different credit cards if you have more).

Important note: Some ATMs deliver your cash first and your credit card after. If you are coming from a place that it’s the other way around you have to pay attention not to leave your card in the machine. Unfortunately, we managed to lose a credit card, most likely for this reason. So learn from our mistakes!

Of course, you can exchange all the major currencies into rupiahs at the airport or banks but you always have to pay a commission fee and the exchange rates are not always in your favor. Generally using an ATM is a better option but it’s really up to you.

Technically US dollars are not accepted in Indonesia, however, you can almost always use them in reality. You will always have to pay more in dollars (because you obviously can’t pay $1.2 US so you will pay 2), but it’s good to have a plan B if you accidentally run out of rupiahs.

Best Time to Visit Bali

Bali is located a few degrees south of the equator, therefore it has a tropical climate all year around. It means that the weather is always hot and humid and there are only two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season.

Generally, the rainy season is between November and March but it can vary a bit from year to year. During this time it usually rains a couple of hours in the morning and a couple of hours in the afternoon so you can still have some rain-free hours during the day if you are lucky.

Nevertheless, I still wouldn’t recommend this period for traveling especially if you’re traveling to Bali for the first time.

Bali is always busy during holidays like Easter or Christmas. July and August are usually crowded too because of the national school holidays in Indonesia. So if you’re not a fan of mass tourism I would avoid these periods as well.

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, Bali

Based on all this, the best time to visit is May, June, or September. You will have pleasant weather with almost no rain and the beaches and famous sites will not be that crowded either.

October can still be a good time, we also visited at the end of October. We were really lucky with the weather because it only rained on our last day. On the other hand, our driver said that this time last year it was constantly raining all day long and it didn’t stop for days. So be careful with October, it can really be a hit or miss.

How Much Time Do You Need to Spend in Bali

Bali is one of the most breathtaking dream destinations in the world and you can easily spend months on the island without ever getting bored. If you’re traveling to Bali for the first time, it’s best to spend at least 2 weeks in Bali to be able to properly explore the island.

When we visited Bali for the first time, we spent 8 days on the island and it felt really short. We managed to cover all the famous sites but in exchange, we spent almost no time at the beach and we were extremely tired at the end. Needless to say, it was totally worth it!

How much time you need to spend in Bali also depends on what you want to see and do. If you are only looking for beautiful beaches and you wish to relax all day long, one week could be enough.

However, there are so many wonderful sites to explore and various activities to do, that you will need at least 2 weeks if you really want to see the best of Bali.

Luckily the cost of living in Bali is totally budget-friendly so if your time allows or if you’re a digital nomad, you can even make it your base for a few months.

Public transportation is basically non-existent in Bali. All right, this is not exactly true: there are some public minibuses called bemo. If you are in a really adventurous mode and you wanna try getting around like a local you can opt for a ride. But for real transportation, I wouldn’t consider this as an option.

Renting a bicycle is possible but Bali is far too big for biking around. However, if you wanna explore the countryside close to your accommodation it can be a great way to get around.

The cheapest and most popular way of transportation is renting a scooter. However, if you don’t have experience in scooter riding I wouldn’t recommend it.

Why? Because the traffic is crazy! Cars, scooters, chickens, dogs, all share the same lane and they are coming from every direction possible. No matter where you go, the streets are always full of scooters and the roads are often in a really bad condition.

Scooter accidents are not exceptional and trust me, you don’t want to spend your holiday lying in the hospital.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against scooters at all. I’m just saying you have to be really, really prepared and have a ton of experience before trying to get around this way. If you’re planning to drive a scooter, you might be interested in reading a comprehensive guide about scooter rental in Bali !

And please don’t forget about travel insurance! Unfortunately, accidents can happen anytime and it’s better to be prepared for that. After many hours of research, I decided to choose SafetyWing and I can honestly recommend them!

Scooters in Ubud, Bali

You can find a taxi practically anywhere and it works the same way as it does in Europe or America. In Bali, almost everyone is a taxi driver. Seriously. You will be constantly asked by the locals where are you headed and whether if you will need a ride. Everyone will be glad to take you anywhere.

There are two types of taxis in Bali: the Bluebird taxis and the rest. The Bluebird taxis always go by the meter and they are safe to use. They even have their own app which you can download and after registration, you can summon a taxi as you please.

The non-Bluebird taxis on the other hand are often corrupt and they usually play dirty tricks with the tourists, like claiming to have a broken meter or taking you on a long road to pay more.

Private driver

I think having a private driver in Bali is the best option ever, especially it will be your first time in Bali and you don’t have any experience in scooter riding. It is generally more expensive than renting a scooter but in exchange, it takes away all the stress and you don’t have to worry about transportation during your stay.

We also decided to hire a private driver and I’m so glad we did! I received a recommendation from another Hungarian girl and that’s how we found Putu . He is the sweetest guy ever!

I contacted him while we were still at home. As I mentioned before I’m a big planner so I’ve already planned most of our itinerary before we first spoke.

Therefore we only needed to finalize the program I had in mind and he helped me organize every little detail. So by the time we arrived in Bali we already had a perfect itinerary and everything was taken care of.

How does it work in real life?

To be honest I had no clue how does it work in real-life and I received many questions about it so I will share my experience. When we arrived at the airport Putu was already there, waiting for us. He took us to our hotel (since it was already late in the afternoon) and we agreed on which time he should pick us up the next day.

The next morning he picked us up as we agreed and from that point, he was always with us until he took us back to the hotel at the end of the day. He drove us from location to location and while we were away exploring he waited for us in the car or spent the time with other drivers (who were waiting for their clients as well).

Yes, even when we were out for hours! Sometimes he even joined us in exploring the area so he could tell us stories about the place and Balinese life in general.

He was really flexible with the timing as well. We wanted to do a lot of sunrise tours so he usually picked us up very early. And by that, I mean very, very early.

Like 1 am or 3 am. Yes, you’ve read it right! (I know, you must think I’m crazy. Wait until you see my sunrise pictures!) The only general rule is that they don’t work more than 14 hours a day which is totally understandable.

Long story short, I really can’t recommend enough to have a private driver. Everything was just so perfect!

What to Wear in Bali

Despite Bali being a very religious island, there is no strict dress code for tourists. The only exceptions are the religious sites where you always have to wear a sarong (and a scarf if your shoulders are not covered by your clothes). Don’t worry, if you don’t own a sarong you can always rent it for a small amount of money at every religious site.

As I mentioned before, the weather in Bali is always hot and humid. Therefore you will most likely stroll around in shorts and T-shirts or dresses. Try to pack lightweight cotton and loose clothes! A beach hat or baseball cap is also a good idea to protect your head from the sun.

Regarding shoes, you can almost always wear flip-flops or sandals. But having a comfy sneaker in your suitcase is a huge bonus if you wanna go for a hike. If you plan to hike Mount Batur you should prepare with some warm clothes too!

I know it sounds weird to pack a jacket and a warmer sweater for Bali, but trust me, you’re gonna need it.

Best Places to Visit in Bali + Where to Stay in Bali

There are just so many things do to and see in Bali that I can go on and on for hours without ever repeating myself. Since this is a Bali travel guide for first-timers I will give you a rough overview of the different areas of Bali including the best places to visit and the best places to stay in each area.

The southern side of Bali is the most touristy area on the island. Denpasar (the capital city of Bali) is located here together with the Ngurah Rai International Airport. South Bali is packed with beautiful beaches, posh cafes, fancy restaurants, and cool party places.

If you’re a foodie like me, you will love this list of the  best cafes in Canggu ! Bali is famous for its sunsets as well and the southern part is one of the best areas to find the best sunsets in Bali .

Best places to visit in South Bali: Uluwatu Temple, Tanah Lot, Nyangnyang Beach, Nusa Dua Beach, Kuta Beach, Cabina Bali

Girl with a floating breakfast at Cabina Bali

Where to stay in South Bali

As I mentioned before the southern side of the island is the most touristy area so you will find a wide range of hotels to choose from. If you’re traveling to Bali for the first time I would recommend staying at either Seminyak or Kuta but Canggu , Uluwatu and Jimbaran could be a great option as well.

Where to stay in Central Bali

If you want to explore the best places in Central Bali I recommend staying in Ubud. Ubud is the heart of Central Bali with many hotels to choose from and it’s packed with amazing restaurants and bars as well, so it’s worth spending at least 3 days in Ubud .

Below you can find some of the best hotels to stay in Ubud. If you’re looking for something more special, check out these private pool villas in Ubud or the best bamboo houses in Bali around the city.

Ubud is full of budget-friendly accommodation options but not many are as beautiful as this place! Gita Maha Ubud Hotel is situated just a 5-minute drive from the Royal Palace and offers an outdoor swimming pool and an on-site restaurant. Each room at this hotel is incredibly spacious too, and many of them feature a private balcony.

East Bali is dominated by the largest volcano on the island: Mount Agung. This is a very active volcano with constant eruptions, therefore it is not allowed to visit.

But its little brother, Mount Batur (who is also an active volcano) is still safe and open for hiking. The nearby area is really beautiful and it is home to some of the island’s oldest villages.

Best places to visit in East Bali: Mount Agung, Mount Batur, Pura Luhur Lempuyang (Gate of Heaven), Tirta Gangga Royal Water Garden

Girl and a boy watching the sunrise from Mount Batur in Bali

Where to stay in East Bali

If you are traveling to Bali for the first time I would recommend you to stay either in South or Central Bali instead of East Bali. There are much more things to do in those areas and you can easily do some day trips from there to visit the best tourist spots in the east.

However, if you want to have a more unique Bali experience staying in East Bali can be great for you! You will find many amazing hotels in the area, the best places to stay are either Candidasa (close to the beach) or Sidemen (more inland with an amazing view over the volcanos).

If you’re looking for a more unique stay, you can also find the many magical bamboo houses in Bali , especially in this part of the island.

Best places to stay in Sidemen

Wapa di Ume Sidemen

The northern side of Bali is really different from the rest of the island. The climate is more foggy and rainy, therefore you can see many cloudy lakes, misty mountains, and some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Bali you’ll ever see.

Best places to visit in North Bali: Munduk Moding Plantation, Wanagiri Hidden Hill, Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, Banyumala twin waterfalls, Sekumpul waterfall , Handara gate

Where to stay in North Bali

If you want to explore all the beauty the northern part of the island has to offer I recommend staying at least one night in Munduk ! It will be a totally different feeling to stay there compared to the rest of the island and the area is really beautiful too.

Best places to stay in Munduk

Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa

LUXURY – Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa

Munduk Moding Plantation is easily one of the most beautiful hotels in Bali. Atres Villa is just a 20-minute drive from Munduk Waterfall so is set in a great location to explore the area. This hotel also has lots of excellent facilities including an outdoor pool, a spa & wellness center, and a bar. However, the highlight of this place has to be the surrounding rice terraces!

Nusa Islands

Local people say that the Nusa Islands (Nusa Ceningan, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Penida) are the perfect place to see what Bali was like 20 years ago before it became a tourist hotspot.

And it’s really true: the Nusa Islands have such a raw beauty and they are (mostly) still untouched and not packed with tourists. If you’re planning to visit the Nusa Islands, you might be interested in reading my Perfect Nusa Islands Itinerary as well!

Best places to visit in the Nusa Islands: Kelingking Beach , Rumah Pohon treehouse, Peguyangan Waterfall , Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, Devil’s Tear, Blue Lagoon

Girl in white dress at Kelingking Beach Nusa Penida

Where to stay in the Nusa islands

Most people choose to stay on Nusa Lembongan , however, I recommend staying on Nusa Penida . Nusa Penida is the biggest and most developed of the three Nusa Islands and there are so many places to visit there that you’re gonna need the most time for this island.

Best places to stay in Nusa Penida

Adiwana Warnakali Resort

LUXURY – Adiwana Warnakali Resort

Adiwana Warnakali Resort in Nusa Penida provides adults-only accommodation with a restaurant, an outdoor swimming pool, and a bar. Each accommodation at the 4-star resort has mountain views, and guests can enjoy access to a sun terrace.

Semabu Hills Hotel Nusa Penida

MID-RANGE – Semabu Hills Hotel Nusa Penida

Perched on the quiet hills of Nusa Penida, this hotel offers sweeping views of the island and the sea beyond. Guests can take advantage of the infinity pool or try traditional meals at the on-site Asian restaurant.

Surya Maha Bungallo

BUDGET – Surya Maha Bungallo

For a budget-friendly stay in Nusa Penida, take a look at Surya Maha Bungallo. Boasting a lush garden with a stunning outdoor pool, the property offers double or twin rooms either with a garden or pool view. A daily continental breakfast is also available.

Breakfast in the pool? We’re in! 😉 Thanks for all of the great details! Bali somehow has not made it off of our Bucket List. Soon, though, and this is helpful!

Oh Bali is definitely the most magical place I’ve ever been to! I hope you can thick it off of your bucket list really soon 🙂

I’ve been daydreaming of Bali since Eat, Pray,Love! YouR beautiful photos have given me some serious wanderlust for the weekend! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Anna! I really love that movie and everything it represents! Bali is still my favorite place on Earth and can’t wait to go back soon 🙂

Great and detailed guide, thanks, I will save it for future! Bali looks like a great escape from the chilly winter in Europe

Thank you Maria! Yes it definitely is 🙂 I’m also planning to go back soon, can’t wait!!

Just stunning! I so want to go to Bali and your pictures make me want to book a plane ticket right now! Love your comprehensive guide and all of your tips & hints!! They will definitely come in handy when I finally get to go 🙂

Your photos are incredible! This is extremely informative! I hope to be able to visit Bali soon, and use all of your useful tips.

Thank you so much! Bali is so photogenic, you simply can’t make a bad photo in Bali 🙂 I really hope you will be able to visit soon!

This is super useful and I just know someone heading over there, I will recommend reading this post. I have a love-hate relationship with Bali but I´m sure there are wonderful hidden corners of the island I had not yet discovered, so might be back one day. Thanks for sharing this informative post, x

Thank you so much for sharing it! Yeah I really get why you have a love-hate relationship with Bali, that’s why I usually try to wake up early in the morning and explore the places without the crowds or go to off the beaten path spots. It feels so much different this way! 🙂

Literally the best Bali Guide I have read! So much information and now I can plan my trip accordingly!

Thank you so much Dana! 🙂

O wow I wish I’d had this guide before my first trip to Bali! So well written, thank you for sharing! I will definitely refer back to this guide for my next trip 🙂

Thank you Ellie! Bali is really such a wonderful place 🙂

This is such a great guide and I love your writing style! Definitely saving this for a future trip and I love your advice about a driver!

Thank you so much Linnea, I’m so happy you liked it! 🙂

Bali looks so fun! Really hoping to visit there sometime this year ? love your photos!

Thank you Jen! Bali is such a wonderful place, I can only recommend!

Love this! Especially as I’m in Bali now! So detailed and helpful x

Aww thank you so much! I’m also in Bali now, love this island so much! 🙂

How much did you pay the driver each day to stay with you for the whole day? Or how much did you end up paying him in total and for how many days? I’m curious because I might do that too when I visit! It’s a great idea!

We typically paid around 600-800k IDR (42-56 USD) for one day depending on how far did we go from our hotel. It was a price per car so it would have been the same for 4 people but we were just the 2 of us. We were there first in October 2018 so these are the prices from that time. When we visited again in March 2020 we didn’t go for a trip so I don’t know the exact prices now but you can always ask our driver, Putu 🙂

Thank you! I am wanting to visit Bali for the first time this year and your guide is awesome!

Thank you so much for your lovely comment Julie! I hope your Bali trip will be amazing!

Thank you for this guide. Im celebrating my birthday in Bali and reading your blog is helping me to plan better. I am flying from Miami to Bali and the best deal its to one stop in Dubai for 7 hours. Do you happened to have a recommendation of what to do in Dubai for 7 hours? or better yet do you recommended a better route to get to Bali from the US? Thank you!

Hey! First of all, thank you so much for your lovely comment 🙂 Dubai is the biggest hub for travelers heading to Southeast Asia so I think that’s a great route. Honestly, since you are flying internationally, I’m not sure I would leave the airport. You need to be there at least 2-3 hours before your flight to Bali departs which leaves you a lot less time to explore, plus you need to stay on top of every regulation to be able to enter Dubai. That being said, since DXB is only a 15-minute drive from the Burj Khalifa, I’m sure I would pick that! You can go up to the top, or just stroll around the tower. You can also see the Dubai Fountain, the Wings of Mexico, and the Dubai Mall too because they are all in one place. Happy travels!

Thanks for the exhaustive guide. The longing to see this Paradise on Earth had been hidden deep in my heart for years. Might materialize this December when going to Thailand to attend a wedding. However, I am not so young or mobile now and wanted to ask you many many questions on how I should make the most of this long cherished dream come true. For instance, is there a lot of walking involved? What about people with limited mobility? Is there any way to talk to you or chat with you? How many days to keep? Will I be able to do it?? Thanks so much.

Hey! To be honest, Bali is not really a good place for people with limited mobility. For instance, most of the time there is no pedestrian walkway by the streets, most waterfalls are hidden deep inside a jungle and some beaches are also only reachable via stairs. That being said, you can still visit some incredible places that are easier to reach but you’ll definitely need to let go of many places. I recommend hiring a driver who can take care of your transportation and he can also help with questions about specific attractions.

hi , thank you sooo much for a very detail explaination. i am planning to visit bali in coming november. i am having few queries pls let me know 1. can i take my 3 yrs old child along with my wife? is it ok to travel with kid ? 2. if i planned to stay in candidisa – east bali — will it be long to go other places of bali ? will the travel time will be more ? 3. in november ending is it ok to travel ? u mentioned its rainy – is it rainy whole day ? 4. i am from india – can u give some more detail about currency usuage with indian rupees ?

Hey! Yes, you can take your kid, many people travel to Bali as a family holiday so it will be all good 🙂 Candidasa is quite far away from the main Bali attractions, it’s a great base to explore the east part of the island but I would recommend diving your time between Candidasa and one/two more central locations. Well, November is technically the start of the rainy season but it’s different each year so nobody can tell you how it will be this year. Normally it only rains a few times a day but it’s really a draw of luck. Sorry, I don’t have any experience with Indian rupees. Hope you will have an amazing trip!

Hi Your article for 1st timer is very useful. I am going in June 2023 as a 1st timer. I like the beach, so I will be staying in the southern part. I am thinking to hire a private guide for this trip as I prefer that way. My stay is about 5 days. Do you have any recommendation for me. If you have any suggestion for me, I really welcome to hear from you. Thank you

Hi Danny! I would recommend getting in touch with Putu, he works as a private driver on Bali and he is amazing! Here’s his Instagram where you can reach him: https://www.instagram.com/bali_travel_monkey/

Thank you Kriszti for the informative travel guide to Bali and for sharing amazing photos as well. Really helpful tips specially for first time travellers with family. I wonder if possible for you to share the contact details of Putu, the private driver you hired during your stay in Bali. I am planned to spend my holidays with my family in Bali next month. Thank you.

Comfortable first and business class flights with IFlyFirstClass to Bali from Sydney

Advantages of flying first class.

There are few direct flights from Sydney to Asian destinations that have first class cabins, and Bali does not buck the trend. However, three airlines offer business class seating for you to begin your Bali getaway - Virgin Australia, Garuda Indonesia and Qantas.

Qantas offers the quickest option at 6 hours 25 minutes, but Garuda and Virgin are only fractionally slower by 5 minutes and 10 minutes respectively.

Both Australian airways offer standard recliner seats on this route but Garuda has the superior option of angled flat seats. It is also the only one to offer Wi-Fi connectivity on board. This is because the Indonesian airline uses the Airbus A330 while the other two fly the Boeing 737 on this route.

The Virgin and Qantas Boeing 737-800s fly at a speed of 518 mph and at an altitude of 10,350 m. Garuda's Airbus A330-300 flies at 540 mph and cruises at a height of 10,980 m.

Airports in Bali

Bali is a major international tourism destination but is served by a single airport, the Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). It is commonly referred to as the Denpasar International Airport. The complex is located at the southern tip of Bali island, a scant 2.5 km from the famous Kuta Beach.

DPS is the nation's third-busiest airport, and handles both domestic and international flights. It catered to over 10 million passengers in the first half of 2017 alone. However, DPS is nearing its maximum capacity and will likely be replaced by another airport within the coming decade.

The airport's architecture draws heavily from the island's Hindu culture, and there are statues of mythological creatures from the  Ramayana  within the complex. Lounges contain children's playgrounds, movie theaters and massage facilities.

Because Bali was the target of two previous Islamist terrorist attacks, over 800 security personnel are employed by the airport.

Why buy tickets with I Fly First Class?
