Tour Bhutan

Situated in the eastern Himalayas, the Kingdom of Bhutan has adopted a very cautious approach to tourism in an effort to avoid any negative impact on the country's culture and environment. Visitors are therefore rewarded with a unique and very personal experience.

Bhutan’s culture, lifestyle and spirituality permeate every aspect of daily life. The country’s rulers closely guard its heritage and value happiness over profit. By honouring and embracing its past, Bhutan gives visitors the chance to glimpse times gone by and appreciate how the old ways are sometimes the best. That said, it’s important to understand that this country isn’t a living museum – the people are well-educated, choosing which global developments to adopt and understanding which will not enhance the wellbeing of its people.

Rooted in Buddhism, all life is sacred in Bhutan. This philosophy has allowed nature to flourish – it is estimated that 770 species of birds thrive here, and you’ll discover an astonishing variety of rhododendron plants, orchids and wildlife on your journey. So important is the natural world here that it is the law that at least 60% of the country must remain forested for all future generations.

Seek an adventure on the virgin mountain kingdom of Bhutan or explore the various intriguing dzongs and monasteries during thrilling Bhutan tours. The country is not only popular for its wisdom and religion, but it is a scenic beauty where visitors can find opportunities to trek through the remote trials while on Bhutan tours. There are several Bhutan tours for an average of 10-12 people that you might find exciting. So don’t delay in booking this exciting tour.

From smiling monks and ornate shrines to mighty fortresses and quaint mountain villages, Bhutan tours will leave you spellbound by the rich culture and captivating landscapes.

Bhutan tours are suitable for seniors, families, and solo travellers. After all, this nation is a perfect getaway for nature and adventure lovers. You will find various types of Bhutan tours that range from trekking and exploring to embarking on National Geographic Journeys.

While on Bhutan tours, some of the top attractions you should add to your bucket list include tours to Thimphu, Taktsang Monastery, National Museum of Bhutan, Trongsa Dzong, and Punakha Dzong.

Aside from being the pretty capital of Bhutan, Thimphu is a must-visit destination during Bhutan tours. Located in the Himalayas, it is a city rich in culture and beauty, with the gorgeous Chuu River flowing through the city. Did you know that Bhutan is the only country with no traffic lights? So when you are in the main city, you will have a truly unique experience. You can also intensify your experience with tours to Tashichho Dzong, Motithang Takin Preserve, and National Memorial Chorten.

Do you want to visit the Tiger’s Best during Bhutan tours? Taktsang Monastery in Paro is considered one of the holiest places in Bhutan. Built for meditation on a high 800-meter high granite cliff, the monastery overlooks the Paro valley and the river. You will also be fascinated by the legend of the second Buddha in Bhutan, who descended from a flying tigress to meditate in this particular place.

For culture freaks and enthusiasts, the National Museum of Bhutan is another top attraction in Bhutan tours. This is where you can learn more about the intriguing culture and nation that has been drawing a lot of travellers each year. Located in a unique conch-shell-shaped watchtower fortress Ta Dzong, the National Museum of Bhutan dates back to 1956 and remains a popular hub for travelers to explore and know the nation better.

Bhutan tours to Punakha Dzong will not be in vain. Punakha Dzong is famous for being the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan. It also serves as the administrative hub of the Punakha District. Tour to this beautiful destination and see why it is sometimes called the “palace of great happiness and bliss.”

While on Bhutan tours, you can’t skip a tour to the biggest monastery and fortress in Bhutan. Lying in the heart of the country in the Trongsa District, Trongsa Dzong offers a spectacular view of the Mangde River. It houses about 200 monks and features a printing press that publishes the religious texts of Bhutan.

Tour Bhutan

The sacred Taktsang Monastery in Bhutan is also referred to as the Tiger's Nest monastery. | Richard I'Anson

Set on the eastern ridges of the mighty Himalaya and sandwiched between Tibet and India, a trip to Bhutan is a travel dream for many. Dramatic scenery, winding mountain passes, snow-capped peaks, fluttering prayer flags and vibrant rhododendrons are the backdrop for a colourful culture steeped in religion and mythology.

Here in the Land of the Thunder Dragon, you can hike through stunning valleys and across rugged high passes, visit isolated villages and explore the countless dzongs (fortresses) and tiny Buddhist monasteries that dot the landscape. Then, visit the unforgettable "Tiger's Nest", the sacred Taktsang Monastery that clings dramatically to the side of a steep, forest-studded granite cliff.

Trek through the picturesque Paro Valley to the base of Chomolhari, Bhutan's second highest mountain, crossing glacial streams and observing the majestic peaks of the Himalaya through a frame of colourful rhododendron blooms. Or be one of the few people each year to join our challenging Bhutan Snowman Trek, ranked as one of the greatest treks in the Himalaya, as it weaves a path through the most remote region of Bhutan.

Explore local culture and shop for beautiful textiles and handicrafts in Thimpu, Bhutan's delightful capital; take in the dancing, cheering and drama of a traditional Bhutanese archery tournament; or watch local history and mythology come alive at Bumthang's Jambay Lakhang festival.

Whichever Bhutan trip you choose; you'll be captivated by the stunning landscapes, ancient culture and humble people of Bhutan.

Thoughtful Travel

Responsible travel practice is at the heart of every program that we offer in Bhutan, where we pioneered the 10-Pieces initiative. When you book one of our adventures you're supporting a program that is committed to safety and sustainability.

Bhutan Litter collection program

The 10 Pieces litter collection initiative is offered on the Chomolhari Base Camp Trek. Trekkers volunteer to collect 10 pieces of litter that they find on the trail each day, which is then disposed of responsibly. This is a simple and effective way to harness the collective power of tourists to keep Bhutan's wilderness trails clean and educate local communities about the negative impact of litter on their environment.

Animal welfare focus

We advocate for cruelty free animal encounters, encouraging travellers to follow the guidelines in our comprehensive Animal Welfare Code of Conduct as we seek to inform stakeholders about animal welfare matters.

Child safe tourism

Children working and living in tourist areas are especially vulnerable to physical, emotional and sexual abuse. We protect vulnerable children by adhering to our Child Protection Code of Conduct.

Wilderness camping

Enjoy fully supported camping in remote locations across Bhutan with our outstanding Bhutanese crew. While the campsite locations have been handpicked for their location, our commitment to responsible travel ensures our footprint is kept to a minimum.

In cities and large towns you will be accommodated in good quality properties that are centrally located, atmospheric and reliable.

Bhutan has an extremely diverse climate profile for a country of its size, owing to both its highly varied altitude and the influence of the north Indian monsoons.

The country can be divided into three broad physiographic zones: the cold alpine peaks and tundra of the Great Himalayas to the north; the temperate mountain valleys of Lesser Himalayas region in central Bhutan; and the subtropical foothills and floodplains of the Duars Plain in the south.

The capital of Thimphu, in central-west Bhutan, is the only place in Bhutan to experience temperature conditions. Winter temperatures in Thimphu usually range between 2°C (35°F) and 12°C (53°F) in January. In July, summer temperatures range from 13°C (55°F) to 19°C (66°F). The north of the country experiences extreme cold and generally dry conditions, and the south, extreme heat and significant rainfall.

Bhutan, like eastern Nepal, comes under the influence of the Indian monsoon from late May to mid-September and Bhutan receives more rain during the monsoon than other Himalayan regions (up to 5.5 metres a year).

The ideal time to visit Bhutan is either pre-monsoon from mid-March when the winter snow has begun to melt off the high passes, until the end of May; or post-monsoon, from October to mid-November.

Temperatures can vary considerably depending on your elevation but as a guideline, temperatures in Thimphu in April/May and October range from around 5°C (41°F) to around 25°C (77°F).

Time in Bhutan

Bhutan is UTC/GMT +6 hours

Dzongkha (official); Sharchhopka; Lhotshamkha; Nepali and English widely spoken in more populated areas; 1% of population make up a variety of different ethnic groups each with own languages.

Ngultrum (Divided into chetrums)

US DOLLARS cash is the main currency of exchange for tourists in Bhutan, with the AUD & EUR also widely accepted in major cities and at the airport. Exchange rates for 50 and 100 notes is better than for smaller denominations. Internationally recognised credit cards can be used for bigger purchases when shopping.

There are now some ATM’s in Bhutan however, these are not reliable, and often for the use of locals only.

Ngulstrum cannot be changed back when you depart nor used outside of Bhutan, so keep this in mind in your calculations.

International Dialing Code

Type C plug

Electricity in Bhutan is 230 Volts, at 50 hertz. The pin type varies but is most commonly types C, D and G. We recommend taking a universal adapter.

Electricity is widely available throughout Bhutan though generally speaking the further you venture from the trailhead the less reliable it becomes. More populous areas are serviced by the grid or small scale hydro-electric projects. In more remote areas solar energy is harnessed for electricity production and as such can be unreliable and in short supply.

When camping there is often no facility for charging of electronic devices we recommend you consider purchasing portable power banks or solar chargers for phone charging and at least one spare camera battery.

Following the processing of your visa we will provide you with a clearance letter/e visa to enable you to board the plane from your respective airport; you will then receive a stamped visa upon arrival at Paro airport. You must carry the visa approval letter with you as you will be required to show this when checking in for your flight into Paro.

We suggest that you consult your doctor, local government inoculation centre or a travel medical specialist in order to get the most current advice regarding vaccination requirements.

Money and valuables should always be stored safely when travelling. Keep your passport with you at all times and do not leave it in your main luggage. Bhutan Tours & Holidays

Man wearing a red cap looking at the view atop of the mountain in Bhutan on a clear sunny day

Bhutan measures its success by Gross National Happiness and by the end of your Intrepid tour, you’ll have contributed more than your fair share of smiles to the cause.

This tiny Himalayan kingdom does things differently. Having only been open to visitors for 45 years, Bhutan puts its environment, culture and wellbeing ahead of economics. This place absorbs more carbon than it creates and a Bhutan tour is perfect for trekkers, nature-lovers and Buddhist pilgrims. From the jaw-dropping Tiger’s Nest to the prayer halls of Gangte Goemba, you’ll experience moments – and people – that make happiness seem like the norm, not a pursuit.

Culture and customs.

If travellers can tear their eyes away from the backdrop of the mighty Himalaya, they’ll discover a rich, remarkable culture in Bhutan that is quickly modernising yet truly anchored in tradition.

Since opening up to travellers in 1974, Bhutan has seen visitor numbers rise from just a couple of hundred to upwards of 200,000. The appeal is obvious: pristine alpine landscapes, magnificent Buddhist architecture and an air of mystery that pulls travellers in, not to mention the much-discussed Gross National Happiness used to measure national wellbeing, which is prioritised over GDP.

Bhutan is the only country in the world to be carbon negative. Since 2007 the country has been run by a democratic government, with three separate parties having won the three national elections since. Approximately 75 per cent of the population are Buddhist and these religious values are used to guide government policy along with prioritising sustainability and cultural preservation.

In society, the Bhutanese follow ‘driglam namzha’, a traditional etiquette supporting the respect for authority, devotion to family and a dedication to civic duty. The flag, which was adopted in 1965, features the country’s emblem of the Thunder Dragon on a backdrop of golden yellow and orange. The yellow represents the king and his secular power, while the orange represents Buddhism. The dragon holds jewels in each of his claws, representing the wealth of the nation.

And it’s the word ‘wealth’ that perhaps describes Bhutan best. A wealth of tradition, of culture, of history. A wealth of beauty, of happiness, of prosperity. In the future, given the way the country has been progressing, there’ll no doubt be a large amount of wealth brought in by more and more tourists. What will be interesting is how Bhutan manages to balance its age-old traditions with its quickening march towards modernity.

History and government

Early history.

As one of the few countries in the world to have never been conquered or occupied by another, Bhutan has a long history of independent governance. Although its early history is shrouded in mystery, Bhutan is thought to have been inhabited from as early as 2000BC. Tibetan Buddhism was introduced into the region around the 9th century, when many Tibetans fled neighbouring Tibet to seek refuge in Bhutan.

The leadership and governance of Bhutan has always been linked to its religion, and this continues in today’s political, legal and religious leadership of the country. The 16th and 17th centuries saw some conflict with Tibet, although Bhutan was never officially taken over by its neighbour. External threats from the British presented themselves in the 18th and 19th centuries; however, once again Bhutan was never officially controlled or governed by an external power.

Recent history

In the last 40 years, Bhutan has had many ‘firsts’. Bhutan introduced a new monetary system and currency in 1974 and also opened up its borders to welcome foreign tourists in the same year. By 2000, Bhutan had its first television set and internet cafe, and by 2004 Bhutan became the first country in the world to ban the sale of tobacco products. Bhutan’s first constitution was drawn up in 2005, and its first democratic multi-party election was held in 2008, when the constitution was finally ratified. It has held two democratic elections since.

Today, Bhutan’s economy relies mainly on tourism, agriculture and forestry, although ‘Gross National Happiness’ continues to be valued more than economic abundance or growth in domestic product. Bhutan has been held up as an example of what a country can be when it puts culture, the environment and wellbeing ahead of economic development, but there are challenges too: after the new government took control in 2013, the prime minister admitted that the focus on the Gross National Happiness measure sometimes distracted from addressing Bhutan’s problems including unemployment, corruption and poverty.

Eating and drinking

Bhutan is famous for its spicy cuisine that’ll knock the socks off the most hardy traveller. Almost everything is served with chillies, so if you like things spicy, you may just have found heaven – for others it’ll be hotter than hell.

A few dishes to look out for

  • Ema datshi These are very hot chillies served in a cheese sauce. This is Bhutan’s national dish, with ema translating as ‘chilli’ and ‘datshi’ as cheese.
  • Phak sha pa Sliced pork stewed using red chilli, onion, tomato, ginger and sliced radish.
  • Red rice The Bhutanese eat loads of rice and you’ll notice that the rice is usually a reddish colour. This is because it’s grown in the fertile Paro Valley soil. It has a nutty flavour and is typically paired with mushrooms and chilli.
  • Momos These Tibetan dumplings are filled with meat, cheese or vegetables and are generally served up as a snack. Never say to no-no to a Momo.
  • Red Panda beer The Red Panda Brewery, which is Bhutan’s first, was started by a man named Fritz Maurer who came to Bhutan from Switzerland after answering a newspaper ad for a qualified cheesemaker. Not only does he make Swiss cheese, he also produces this hefeweizen beer.

Plant-based options

Vegetarians will find travelling through Bhutan easy as meat does not play a huge part in the Bhutanese diet. Vegans may have a more difficult time as dishes will often come with cheese. Be sure to ask that your dish is prepared without butter or cheese.

Of course, this is all a lot easier when you’re travelling with a local. If you travel with Intrepid, you’ll have a local leader who can help you decipher menus and recommend good plant-based choices.

Geography and environment

This landlocked kingdom may occupy a small space on the world globe but there’s nothing small about the mountains that lie within. Sharing borders with China and India, Bhutan is known as 'The Switzerland of Asia' for its mountainous topography and similarity to Swiss landscapes.

Bhutan has largely resisted overdevelopment, which has left much of its natural environment intact. As a result of this, Bhutan is one of the most species-rich countries in the world – with hundreds of species of mammals, birds and plants calling the Bhutanese valleys, mountains and meadows home. Endangered red pandas and snow leopards can be found in Bhutan as well as a huge variety of wild flowers and birds.

The country can be divided into three areas. In the south, you’ll find the lowlands fronting the Indian border, which enjoy a subtropical climate. This region sees monsoonal rains from June to mid-October and mild winters through December, January and February.

Travel north and the climate becomes progressively colder as the Himalaya rise. The central belt of the country, in the lower foothills of the Himalaya, features cold, dry winters and warm summers with monsoonal rains on the southern sides, while the valleys experience less rainfall thanks to the mountains’ protection.

In the northern regions, as the Himalaya rise above 2500 metres (8202 feet), the winters are cold and while the summer can be warm, the valleys are generally protected against monsoonal rain. The temperatures turn freezing as you reach the China-Tibet border, with the mountains rising to a high point at Gangkhar Puensum (7570 m/24,480 ft) – the highest unclimbed mountain in the world.

If you’re after top quality handicrafts and colourful art, then Bhutan will delight. While Bhutan isn’t known as a top shopping destination, there are many talented artisans creating good quality souvenirs to buy here.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

  • Hand-woven fabric Traditional weaving is at its very best in Bhutan. Choose from colourful rugs, clothing, blankets and accessories when visiting one of the many textile stores and boutiques in Bhutan’s cities.
  • Traditional music Why not pick up a CD of Bhutanese harmonies, or chanting monks, as a melodic stress-buster for when you’re back at home and in work mode.
  • Spiritual souvenirs Vibrant prayer flags, fragrant incense and prayer beads make meaningful gifts for friends and family back home.

Festival and events

Bhutan's festival calendar is packed with colourful occassions filled with celebrations and dancing.

Paro Spring Festival (Paro Tshechu)

The people of Paro welcome the start of spring with five days of cultural and spiritual celebration. Locals shake off the winter blues by indulging in sword dancing, drumming and feasting. Expect to see stirring rituals, colourful clothing and touching displays of faith if you’re lucky enough to travel during this time.

Thimphu Festival (Thimphu Tschechu)

This three-day festival is meant to be highly auspicious to all who attend. Bhutanese people travel from all over to attend this spiritual celebration that features prayers and rituals to invoke the gods as well as traditional dance, costume and theatre. This highly joyous time gives travellers an important insight into Bhutan’s culture and the chance to mingle with locals.

Bhutan travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Bhutan?

Bhutan experiences monsoonal weather between June and August and consequently is not a particularly pleasant time to visit the country.

The best times to visit are the shoulder seasons of March to May and September to November, with the later months being particularly pleasant as rainfall is lower and the views tend to be clearer.

December to February sees snowfall in many areas but it can be a beautiful time to visit thanks to the snow covering the mountainous landscape.

Is it safe to visit Bhutan?

Yes, it is safe to visit Bhutan. The crime rate in Bhutan is low although petty crime does happen. Travellers should be alert and keep an eye on their belongings, particularly in crowded or well-touristed areas.

If you are visiting high-altitude areas be sure to discuss altitude sickness with a doctor and plan accordingly. Flooding and landslides occur during the monsoon period (June–September) so follow local advice and check with your tour operator for disruptions.

Do I need a visa to travel to Bhutan?

All nationalities require a visa for Bhutan and, at this stage, travellers can only enter as part of a group visa on a tour. Independent visas are not issued and the cost of the visa is included in your tour. If you are travelling with Intrepid, please provide your booking agent with the following information for us to apply for your group visa:

  • a scanned colour copy of the photo page of your passport (consisting of both the flip pages)
  • full name as per passport
  • date of birth
  • nationality
  • passport number & date of issue/expiry,
  • email address you will access while travelling
  • arrival and departure flight details

Due to the controlled nature of travel in Bhutan the group visa can only be submitted once we have the above details from ALL travellers in the group. Failure to advise any of the information as above can slow the visa issuing process and delay the visa for the whole group.

Visas are generally issued within 5 days of departure and as close as 48 hours prior to travel into the country. We will send your group visa to your travelling email address. Please print this visa and carry with you as you will need it at the time of boarding your Bhutan flight.

You must show the copy of your Bhutan group visa at the check-in for your flight to Bhutan and on arrival at immigration in Bhutan where you will have a Bhutan entry stamp placed into your passport.

Is tipping customary in Bhutan?

Tipping isn’t compulsory in Bhutan, but many people who work in tourism are accustomed to receiving tips so it's wise to set aside a small amount to show your appreciation for drivers, cooks and other service workers. Most hotels and restaurants will include a service fee in the final bill.

Your local leader may discuss the idea of running a group tipping kitty on the first day of your trip. In a group tipping kitty, everybody contributes an equal amount at the start of the tour that your leader uses to tip drivers, local guides and hotel staff on your behalf. The leader will keep a running record of all monies spent, which can be checked at any time. Any money remaining at the end of the tour is returned to group members.

This is often the easiest way to avoid the hassle of needing small change and knowing when and what is an appropriate amount to tip. Participation in this kitty is optional, and you are welcome to manage your own tipping separately if you prefer. Please note the tipping kitty excludes tips for your tour leader.

What is the internet access like in Bhutan?

Most tourist hotels will have free wifi, as will many restaurants or cafes in Bhutan’s larger cities. It’s possible to buy a local SIM though internet access will be limited in the remote and mountainous regions.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Bhutan?

If you plan on using your mobile phone in Bhutan be sure to activate global roaming and check charges with your provider before you leave home. If your phone is unlocked, you can purchase a local SIM on arrival. The best coverage is with B-Mobile, while Tashi Cell has similar costs but more limited coverage. Please note that coverage will be limited in more remote areas.

What are the toilets like in Bhutan?

You will have to adjust to different standards of hygiene and sanitation while in Bhutan. Squat toilets are the norm across the country, which may take some getting used to, though Western-style, flushable toilets can be found in large hotels and some tourist areas.

What will it cost for a...?

Because of Bhutan’s unique tourism regulations, all meals are included in tour group itineraries. Local currency will generally be used to purchase snacks, while US dollars are best for larger souvenirs. Bhutan’s unit of currency is the Bhutanese ngultrum (Nu.), though prices here are approximate and shown in US dollars for ease of comparison.

Prayer flags = USD 1 Hand made coin purse = USD 5-10 Gofur (wooden bowl) = USD 10-15 Ceremonial mask = USD 20-40

Can I drink the water in Bhutan?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Bhutan. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water and fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Bhutan?

Credit cards are accepted are large hotels and the bigger stores but a heavy surcharge often applies. Keep in mind that tours in Bhutan are fully prepaid and include all meals and transport, so your only spending money should be for souvenirs, snacks and drinks. It’s best to bring and use US dollars for large purchases.

What is ATM access like in Bhutan?

There are ATMs available in Bhutan’s larger cities though they won’t accept some foreign cards. If you are travelling outside of the main cities be sure to carry cash to cover small purchases.

What is the weather like in Bhutan?

Bhutan’s weather varies depending on your location and the time of year.

In the capital, Thimphu, the temperature averages from 5°C (41°F) in January to 20°C (68°F) in the summertime. This summer period, from June–August, also sees the monsoonal rains arrive. The nearby city of Paro experiences a similar climate.

The city of Punakha, which is located at 1300 metres (4250 feet), has a warmer climate than Thimphu. The average temperature ranges from 11°C (75°F) in winter to 24°C (75°F) in the summertime. Because of the mountainous terrain, the rains here generally affect the southern side while the valleys experience less intense rainfall.

Is Bhutan safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Bhutan, like most Asian countries, is not particularly appreciative of public displays of affection regardless of sexual orientation.

Homosexuality has been illegal in Bhutan since 2004, but in 2019 a bill was passed to decriminalise what was known as ‘unnatural sex’.

LGBTQIA+ people are generally accepted in Bhutan but work still needs to be done to change social attitudes towards those that identify differently.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Bhutan accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Travelling through Bhutan is difficult for those with physical disabilities. There are only a few hotels that have accessible rooms and bathrooms, and it’s rare that buildings will have been adapted for accessibility issues. That said, all travel through Bhutan must be done through a tour group so if you’re interested in travelling there then Intrepid will do all it can to make that dream a reality

As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What to wear in Bhutan

During winter, if travelling to high altitude areas, you’ll need cold-weather gear, thermals, good waterproof boots and a warm/windproof jacket. If you’re not taking on an alpine trek, however, warm clothes are necessary for the evening but a fleece and windbreaker should suffice during the day.

In the summertime, lightweight clothing is best along with a raincoat, as well as a jumper for the evening. You may add warmer clothes if heading into the higher reaches of the Himalaya, including a beanie, gloves, scarf and down jacket.

For ideas on what to pack for your Bhutan tour, take a look at Intrepid’s   ultimate packing list .

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Bhutan is a country as unique as it is intriguing. With a philosophy of Gross National Happiness, Bhutan places a strong emphasis on economic and traditional values. Having only introduced TV and Internet to the country in 1999, Bhutan is strongly grounded in conventional Buddhist ideals and Himalayan beauty. Don’t let that fool you though; this is a country of well-educated and spirited people, and culture. Dazzling landscapes and energetic dance festivals are the perfect backdrop for the mountainous treks and handcrafted shopping excursions that await all who visit. Life and adventure glide along this heritage-rich country, blending the old with the new.

Unlike other destinations, Bhutan has an interesting built-in tourist tariff charged on a per day basis. This may seem like it makes traveling here more expensive, but it’s actually a very inexpensive all-inclusive fee; hotel, meals, licensed tour guides, and in-country transportation of your choosing are included with the daily tax. A well-monitored tourism office makes exploring the country an easy and independent endeavor, not to be missed by eager travellers.

Tell us your destination, date, and group size.

Our team of travel experts and guides will design a tailored itinerary just for you., enjoy your trip with peace of mind knowing everything is taken care of..

Depart early this morning for your flight to Tibet. If the weather is clear, the flight from Chengdu to Lhasa will offer spectacular panoramic views of the eastern ramparts of the Himalayas. China’s highest mountain peaks, the 24,783’ Minya Konka, and the mighty Namche Barwa (25,439 ft.) loom majestically on the horizon, surrounded by countless snow-capped peaks and high alpine valleys, climbing vertiginously upwards to the high-altitude Tibetan plateau.

Your guide will meet you at the airport for the drive (1.5 hours) across the Yarlung Valley to Tsedang (11,152 ft.). On your way, enjoy the exquisite beauty of the mighty Brahmaputra River, known as the Yarlung Tsangpo in this part of Tibet. The Yarlung Valley is certainly one of the most beautiful parts of Tibet, and the historic town of Tsedang will be your day’s destination. You spend the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying the sights in Tsedang, nestled beneath the slopes of the sacred Gangpo Ri.

Tsedang was at the crux of Tibetan civilization until Lhasa emerged as the preeminent center of Tibetan society in the 7th century. InTsedang you will have the opportunity to visit the monasteries of Ganden Chökhorling and Ngachö, and the ancient castle of Yumbu Lakang, the oldest building in Tibet.

As this is your first day at a higher elevation, physical exertion is recommended to allow your bodies to acclimate to the altitude. Take a late afternoon walk through the bazaar, if you’re feeling up for it.

(Tsedang Hotel; B, L, D)

Tour image

Begin your day with a drive through the stunningly beautiful Yarlung Tsangpo Valley as you head toward the important monastery of Samye. Aside from its tremendous scenic beauty, the Yarlung Valley is also famed for its place of honor in the Tibetan mythological canon. According to tradition, it was in the Yarlung Valley that Tibetan civilization came into being. At Gangpo Ri, it is said that Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, descended to earth in the guise of a monkey, and together with an incarnation of the goddess Tara, was the progenitor of the Tibetan race.

To reach Samye, you must cross the mighty Tsangpo River by ferry to reach Surkhar on the river’s north bank. From here it is a short drive to Samye, Tibet’s first monastic institution, founded in the 8th Century CE by the fabled King Trisong Detsen. This monastery is closely associated with the legendary Padmasambhava, aka Guru Rinpoche, who established the Buddhist faith in this region of Tibet. Due to its close connection with Guru Rinpoche, Samye was originally tied to the Nyingmapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, though it later came to be associated with the Sakyapa school. Samye is distinctive in that it is laid out as a mandala of theBuddhist cosmological vision. In its center rises the pivotal structure, the Ütse, which symbolizes Mt. Meru, the center of the Buddhist universe. Samye’s many temples, chapels, and chörtens are laid out around the Ütse in a circular pattern, signifying the oceans and continents of the Buddhist cosmos. After thoroughly exploring Samye, you will return through the Yarlung Valley to Tsedang.

Take the old trade route over high passes and along the turquoise waters of Yamdrok Lake to Gyantse (13,050 ft.) Nomadic shepherds may be in this area and you may have the opportunity to visit them.

Yamdrok is known as the “scorpion lake,” due to its twisting shoreline, which, as the moniker suggestions, resembles a scorpion. Yamdrok is one of the four sacred lakes of Tibet and is a major pilgrimage site in its own right, with a kora path ringing its shores. The lake will be your companion for a good portion of your drive to Gyantse. From the rushing waters of the Tsangpo to the high mountain passes of Kamba-la and Karo-la, festooned with prayer flags, the drive from Tsedang to Gyantse is a breathtaking and photogenic journey.

Arriving in Gyantse, situated in the fertile and agriculturally productive Nyang-chu Valley with the impressive Gyantse Dzong (fort) sitting stolidly atop its lofty perch, you check in to your hotel and take in some sites in Gyantse. The highlight of your time in Gyantse will be a visit to the city’s most famous site, the sublime Kumbum chörten, located at the Pelkor Chöde Monastery. At one time, both the Gelugs and Sakya sects had monasteries at Pelkor Chöde.

As with most of Tibet’s great monastic institutions, Pelkor Chöde suffered greatly during the Cultural Revolution, but is nevertheless enjoying a period of revival. The Kumbum (which means “100,000 images” in Tibetan) is blessed with a plethora of amazing Buddhist murals, frescoes and statuary. You will also see many devout pilgrims completing the short kora around the Kumbum, spinning prayer wheels as they circumambulate themystical Gyantse Kumbum protected by the ever-watchful eyes of the Lord Buddha.

Traveling on the modern road that traverses the fertile green fields and dun-colored hills of the Nyang-chu Valley, you arrive in Shigatse (12,800 ft.), Tibet’s second largest city, and home to the monastery of Tashilhunpo, residence of the Panchen Lamas.

En route you have the option of stopping at Shalu Monastery and the small agricultural communities.

After checking in at the hotel, embark on a visit to Tashilhunpo. Founded in 1447 by another disciple of the great Tsongkhapa, Tashilhunpo was the resting place of the 1st Dalai Lama.Nevertheless, the institution has come to be identified with the Panchen Lamas, the second most important spiritual reincarnation in Tibetan Buddhism (after the Dalai Lamas). Although the original manifestation of the Panchen Lama was identified by the “Great Fifth” Dalai Lama, a rivalry between the two great figures developed over the course of the following centuries.

Tashilhunpo is an intriguing place to visit. It is a very large complex and, like Drepung, rewards the visitor who takes the time to explore the wander the monastery’s byways. Tashilhunpo is an active monastery with a fairly sizeable contingent of monks in residence. The highlight of a visit to the monastery is the massive, 75-foot-plus gilded statue of Maitreya.

Drive along the powerful Tsangpo (meaning The River) as you make your way through the beautiful countryside of Ü, the historically rich province of Central Tibet. Winding your way through the stunningly austere Tibetan landscape, you finally enter the environs of Lhasa, Tibet’s most populous city. There before you, standing imposingly upon its lofty precipice, is the staggeringly beautiful and instantly recognizable Potala Palace, its regal red and white façade and glittering golden gables towering over the Kyi-chu Valley.

The “forbidden city” of Lhasa will reveal its unique character and enchanting mystique as you visit many of its most significant historical and cultural sites.

(Shangri-La Hotel; B, L, D)

Tour image

Spend the next two days exploring the city’s most important sites.

Drepung Monastery, beautifully situated in the unpopulated hills west of Lhasa, is a remarkable place. At one time Drepung was home to 10,000 monks, establishing it as the largest monastic institution in the world. Drepung is a large establishment and it is worth the time to explore in depth. Drepung was founded in 1416, just prior to the establishment of Sera. Notably, Drepung’s Ganden Palace was home to the Dalai Lamas until the construction of the Potala by the Great Fifth Dalai Lama in the 17th century. Drepung’s many colleges, halls and temples extend up the hillside towards the peak of Gephel Ri, encouraging the visitor to wander the many byways that meander through the compound’s whitewashed structures. One of Drepung’s many attractions is the massive, two-story statue of Maitreya, the Future Buddha, which attracts pilgrims from throughout Tibet. Drepung’s dramatic location offers splendid views of the Kyi-chu Valley below, including the monastery of Nechung nestled at the foot of the hill below Drepung.

Jokhang is Lhasa’s sacred religious temple. While the Potala Palace played host to Tibet’s affairs of state, Lhasa’s second great historic site, the Jokhang temple, is the religious heart and soul of Tibetan Buddhism. The Jokhang, arguably Tibet’s holiest religious shrine, was constructed in the 7th Century CE under the guidance of the indomitable King Songtsen Gampo. As legend has it, Songtsen Gampo’s Chinese and Nepalese brides brought the Dharma to Tibet, as well as the holiest Buddhist relic in Tibet, the “Jowo Rinpoche.” This golden, bejeweled statue of the Buddha Shakyamuni is the highlight of any visit to the Jokhang. The roof of the Jokhang, with its wonderful golden gables and carvings, offers a magnificent view of the Potala and the busy Barkhor markets below.

The Barkhor, the maze-like warren of shops and stalls that surrounds the Jokhang, will beckon you to join the Tibetans who travel here to pay homage to the Jokhang as they circumambulate the sacred shrine.

Pilgrims journey from throughout Tibet to make prostrations and to complete this ritual kora. Join with these amazing pilgrims as they make their way around this venerable site, and lose yourself amongst the vibrant sites, fantastic smells, and distinctive sounds of the bazaars of the Barkhor.

Looming over Lhasa and the Kyi-chu Valley is the monumental Potala Palace. A visit to this amazing historical site is certainly a highlight of any trip to Tibet. Explore the many chapels, halls and tombs of the Red Palace. Based on the mythical Potala in South India, this more tangible incarnation of the palace was the home of Tibet’s god-kings, the Dalai Lamas. Begun by the 5th Dalai Lama in the 17th century, the Potala was the winter residence of the Tibetan spiritual leader from the time of “The Great Fifth” until the current and 14th Dalai Lama, His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, occupied it. Now a museum, the Potala is a treasure trove of Tibetan history, its dark and mysterious chapels luring the visitor to discover its many secrets.

Visit Sera Monastery, located to the north of Lhasa, which is perhaps most famous for the always lively sessions that take place in the Debating Courtyard.

Sera was founded in 1419 by a student of the legendary Tsongkhapa and was once home to several thousand Gelugs monks. Although the monastery is populated by far fewer monks these days, Sera, like many other Tibetan monasteries, is reemerging as a prominent center ofTibetan Buddhist studies. After exploring the Main Assembly Hall and many colleges, it is arguably the highlight of any visit to Sera to relax beneath the shady canopy of the Debating Courtyard’s many trees and revel in the sights and sounds as Sera’s monks energetically argue the finer points of Buddhist philosophy.

Tour image

Early this morning transfer to Lhasa Airport for your flight to Kathmandu. As Nepal is 2 hours 45 minutes behind Tibet time (all of China/Tibet is on Beijing time, some three time zones to the east), you actually gain time upon arriving Kathmandu.

The legendary locale of Kathmandu conjures images of the ultimate mysterious and exotic travel destination. Located in Central Nepal, the Kathmandu Valley is the center of Nepali cultural and political life. Indeed, the Kathmandu Valley has been a hub of civilization for over two millennia. Kathmandu is living history, where the modern and ancient continue to mingle. It is an unforgettable experience to wander the mysterious bazaars of old Kathmandu, and this afternoon you can take a walking tour of locales such as the Durbar Square, Hanuman Dhoka, theancient palace of the Gorkha Kings and, of course, Kathmandu’s incomparable bazaars. While in Kathmandu, you will be staying at the iconic Yak & Yeti Hotel, in the heart of Kathmandu. The hotel is built around the All Durbar, the old palace of the Rana Dynasty. Through the years it has been the place to stay for royalty, heads of state, Hollywood celebrities and many mountaineering expeditions bound for Everest and the high Himalaya.

Enjoy a dawn Mt. Everest-view flight guided by a Sherpa Climber. These turbo-prop pressurized aircraft have been specially outfitted with large viewing windows (every passenger has a window seat) and follow a flight path that parallels the high Himalaya all the way to Everest and back. Your Sherpa guide will keep you informed of all the names and climbing routes of the peaks as you fly by them. On return to your hotel, have breakfast with the Sherpa Guide and get all your questions on climbing Everest answered.

Although Nepal is the world’s only Hindu kingdom, the Buddhist faith is prevalent throughout the country. Indeed, some of Kathmandu’s most renowned sites are Buddhist. The eyes of the Lord Buddha gaze serenely upon the Kathmandu Valley from atop the photogenic stupa at Swayambhunath, also known as the Monkey Temple, for reasons that will become apparent when you visit. Swayambhunath is steeped in mythology, linked to the bodhissatva Manjushri, with historical links back to the 5th century. You can climb the stupa’s 365 steps with Buddhist pilgrims and join them in their ritual circumambulation. Views of the Kathmandu Valley from Swayambhunath are spectacular.

The large Buddhist stupa at Bodnath, a World Heritage Site, is equally renowned. The stupa is one of the world’s largest, dating back to the 6th century. Located on the old trade route from Nepal to Tibet, Bodnath is also home to a sizeable Tibetan community and is a wonderful place to witness traditional Buddhist ritual, as well as to shop for Tibetan arts and crafts.

Kathmandu is also home to the great Hindu temple atPashupatinath, located on the banks of the Bagmati River. This is a major pilgrimage site for the followers of Shiva, drawing Hindu faithful from around the world. Although the temple is off-limits to non-Hindus, travelers can still visit the temple precincts and view the temple from the opposite bank of the Bagmati. From here, one can see the temple’s cremation ghats and witness firsthand the Hindu cycle of life.

Fly to Pokhara this morning. Nestled in the Pokhara Valley, the city of Pokhara is surrounded by the towering Himalaya, including several of the range’s legendary peaks – Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, the iconic fish-tail peak of Machhapucchare, and of course, the redoubtable Annapurnas. Spend the remainder of the day exploring Pokhara and walking around the bazaar.

(Fishtail Lodge; B)

Tour image

Revel in the glory of the mighty Himalaya as you visit sites and go on hikes around Pokhara; your guide can discuss specific options with you. Early morning, row across the lake and then hike up to the World Peace Pagoda giving you a bird’s eye-view of Pokhara City and the Valley. A short (1- to 1.5-hour) strenuous hike, almost all of it straight uphill. There are a hundred Peace Pagodas built around the world and this one in Nepal was actually the 71st Pagoda that was constructed. This project initiated soon after World War II by Nichidatsu Fujii, a Japanese monk, who was greatly inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, to inspire World Peace. There are three Pagodas built in the U.S. – San Francisco; Grafton, NY; and Leverett, MA. On the way back across the lake stop at the very active Parahi temple, built on a small island in the middle of the lake.

Return to Kathmandu. Delve deeper into the history of the Kathmandu Valley, visiting the ancient temple city of Bhaktapur and nearby Patan, including the rug-weaving center of Refugee Tibetans. The evening is at your leisure.

Tour image

Your flight to Bhutan is parallel to the Himalayan range and one can see Everest, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga if the weather is clear. As you enter the Paro Valley, you will sweep past forested hills with the silvery Pa Chu (Paro River) meandering down the valley below. Paro Dzong (fortress) and Ta Dzong (watchtower) on the hills above the town will be a fine sight. Your guide will meet you at Paro airport and will transfer you to Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu, an exciting blend of tradition and modernity. The afternoon is at your leisure.

(Zhiwaling Ascent; B, L, D)

Your full day of sightseeing starts of with a visit to the market, where everyone goes to buy fruits and vegetables, rice, grains, chilies and other fresh foods. The crowded stalls offer many colorful local items such as yak tail dusters, butter teacups, turquoise from Tibet and musical instruments.

Visit the Institute for Zorig Chusum (commonly known as Painting School), where students undertake a six-year course on the 13 traditional arts and crafts of Bhutan, and continue onto the Textile and Folk Heritage Museums. These museums, both of which opened in 2001, provide fascinating insights into Bhutanese material culture and way of life.

The third king, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, as a monument to world peace and prosperity, envisaged the construction of the National Memorial Chorten. Completed in 1974 after his untimely death, it is both a memorial to the Late King (“the Father of Modern Bhutan”) and a monument to world peace. The paintings and statues inside the monument provide a deep insight into Buddhist philosophy.

Tour image

Begin your drive to Punakha via Wangduephodrang. You will drive by what remains of the Wangduephodrang (or Wandgi) Dzong, sitting atop a hill at the confluence of the Punakha Chu and Tang Chu rivers. It was the town’s most visible feature and suffered great damage in a fire in June 2012. You arrive Punakha early afternoon, and will visit Punakha Dzong, a massive structure built at the junction of two rivers. Punakha was the capital of Bhutan until 1955, and still serves as the winter residence of the monk body. The first King, Ugyen Wangchuck, was crowned here in 1907. The fortress has withstood several damages from fire, earthquake and flood. The latest flood of October 1994 caused great damages to the fortress but miraculously spared the statue of Buddha Jojampa.

(Dhensa Resort; B, L, D)

Tour image

After breakfast, you embark on a walking excursion to Chimi Lhakhang, situated on a hillock in the center of the valley, which is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley, who in the late 15th century used humor, songs, and outrageous behavior to dramatize his teachings. Due to this, he is also known as the “Divine Madman.” This temple is also known as the temple of fertility. It is widely believed that couples that do not have children are usually blessed with a child soon after praying at the temple. It is a 30-minute walk across a field from the road to the temple. The trail leads across rice fields to the tiny settlement of Pana, which translates as “field.” The trail then follows a tiny stream downhill to Yoaka and across more fields before making a short climb to Chimi Lhakhang.

In the afternoon you take a beautiful hike to the regal Khamsum Yuelley Namgel Chorten, which was built to remove negative forces and promote peace, stability and harmony in the changing world. The Chorten dominates the upper Punakha Valley with commanding views across the Mo Chu and up towards themountainous peaks of Gasa and beyond.

Tour image

After an early breakfast, you drive up to Dochu-la pass (3,088 meters/10,130 feet) stopping briefly here to take in the view and admire the chorten, mani wall and prayer flags that decorate the highest point on the road. If skies are clear, the following peaks can be seen from this pass (left to right): Masagang (7,158 meters), Tsendagang (6,960 meters), Terigang (7,060 meters), Jejegangphugang (7,158 meters), Kangphugang (7,170 meters), Zongphugang (7,060 meters), a table mountain that dominates the isolated region of Lunana, and, finally, Gangkar Puensum (7,497 meters), the highest peak in Bhutan.

After checking in to your hotel (which offers a view of Taksang Monastery), you leave to visit Ta Dzong, originally built as a watchtower, which now houses the National Museum. The extensive collection includes antique thangka paintings, textiles, weapons and armor, household objects and a rich assortment of natural and historic artifacts. Walking down the trail, you will come to Rinpung Dzong (“Fortress of the Heap of Jewels”), which has a long and fascinating history. Along the wooden galleries lining the inner courtyard are fine wall paintings illustrating Buddhist lore such as four friends, the old man of long life, the wheel of life, scenes from the life of Milarepa, Mount Sumeru and other cosmic mandalas.

(Zhiwaling Heritage; B, L, D)

Tour image

Experience the wonders of the Drukgyel Dzong, a ruined fortress where Bhutanese warriors fought Tibetan invaders centuries ago. The Dzong was destroyed by accidental fire in 1951 and left in ruins.

Explore the dzong and surrounding village, and on a clear day experience the spectacular view of the majestic Mt. Chomolhari (7,314 meters/23,990 feet). The snowy dome of sacred Chomolhari, the “mountain goddess,” is best seen in all her glory from the approach road to the Dzong. Along the way you will see the 7th-century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the 108 temples built in the Himalayas by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. The building of this temple marked the introduction of Buddhism to Bhutan.

You will also take an excursion to Taktsang, the most famous of Bhutanese monasteries. It is said that Guru Rinpoche arrived here on the back of a tigress and meditated at this monastery, hence its moniker of the “Tiger’s Nest.” The hiking excursion to themonastery’s viewpoint takes about five to six hours round trip.

Queensland's greenhouse emission 2050 net zero target to be enshrined in law

The Gladstone Power Station.

Queensland's greenhouse gas emission reduction targets will be enshrined in law after state MPs overwhelmingly backed the move.

Legislation – requiring Queensland to cut emissions by 30 per cent on 2005 levels by 2030, 75 per cent by 2035, and reach net zero by 2050 – was introduced by the Miles government in February and backed by the opposition, and the Greens in a vote today.

An expert panel will also be set up to advise on emissions reduction and annual progress reported to parliament.

Energy and Clean Economy Jobs Minister Mick de Brenni said "the evidence shows we must act now and we must act decisively if we are to tackle climate change".

While the government's majority meant it did not need the LNP's support to pass the bill, environmental groups had been calling for a bipartisan commitment in an election year.

Shadow environment minister Sam O'Connor told parliament yesterday the LNP's decision to support the government's targets was "significant and has been carefully considered".

"Reducing our emissions by 75 per cent is ambitious, but it is achievable," he said.

"To date, Queensland's emissions have reduced by 29 per cent on 2005 levels according to the latest data available from 2020-21.

"This gives the LNP confidence there is a pathway to reaching what this bill proposes."

However, the LNP voted against legislating the state's renewable energy targets of 50 per cent by 2030, 70 per cent by 2032 and 80 per cent by 2035.

"The LNP supports the targets but cannot support to legislate them when there's no credible pathway to achieving them," shadow energy minister Deb Frecklington said.

She said Labor's decision to legislate those targets "embeds far high risks for higher energy bills because it is founded on one major project, the Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project".

"The legislation … handcuffing the state to the decision instead of allowing us to be guided by aspects that actually impact Queenslanders," she said.

During the debate, Greens MP Michael Berkman said the targets in both of the bills were a "dramatic improvement on the status quo".

"But they are not aligned with the current climate science," he said.

Both the LNP and the Greens criticised the government for the time allocated to debate the bills.

Publicly-owned energy assets

The legislation states enshrining the targets in law will attract investment in new industries and in decarbonising the state's existing industries.

It aims to support the creation of more jobs in emerging industries like hydrogen and critical minerals, and back the transition to net zero.

The legislation also sets out a strategy for how the government will maintain public ownership of energy assets and of existing coal-fired and gas-fired power stations.

It has set targets of 100 per cent ownership of transmission and distribution assets and deep storage assets, and a target of at least 54 per cent ownership of generation assets.

In a defeated amendment, the opposition moved for the generation assets to be wholly publicly owned.

A blueprint detailing the timing and sequence of significant energy infrastructure to decarbonise Queensland's electricity network has been established, with the first update due in 2025.

The legislation also outlines a Renewable Energy Zone Framework to support the connection of new large-scale wind and solar generation needed by 2035.

It also establishes the Job Security Guarantee, backed by $150 million in funding to support workers at publicly owned coal-fired power stations.
