The Top 10 American Whiskey Distilleries To Tour Now By Forbes Travel Guide Correspondent Sarah White

April 11, 2012

copper still tours

Whiskey-only bars, tasting flights and $100-plus pours are more common than ever, but to become a real whiskey connoisseur you need to learn the liquor making process from the inside. We rounded up the country’s top 10 whiskey distilleries where you can tour the facilities, learn about mashbills and barrel woods and discover what gives your favorite label its distinct flavor, whether its rye or single malt, blended or bourbon.

1. George Washington’s Distillery & Gristmill, Mount Vernon, Va. Our first president likely wet his whistle on some of the whiskey his own distillery produced after its founding in 1797. Restored and reopened in 2006, it now bottles an un-aged white Rye whiskey and a barrel-aged (in charred American oak) whiskey using historically accurate techniques. (For example, it hand-chop logs for wood stoves that heat the stills). Demand outstrips supply here — spirits are on sale just twice a year, with only a few hundred bottles to each batch. Tour the 18th-century distillery year-round.

Stay: The distillery is an easy 16-mile drive from the nation’s capital, and a stay at the luxurious and intimate Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Jefferson Hotel Washington, D.C. will give you a stylish place to retreat to where you can sample even more fine liquors at the cozy Quill bar.

Stay: Experience Southern hospitality at its finest at Five-Star Hermitage Hotel in historic downtown Nashville , 75 miles northwest of the distillery and in the center of the city’s music scene. The hotel can arrange for a private luxury car to transport you to and from Jack Daniel’s.

3. St. George Spirits, Alameda, Calif. Originally founded as an eau de vie (fruit brandy) distillery 30 years ago, St. George now produces two whiskey labels at its location in a former airplane hangar near San Francisco . See the huge collection of copper pots and aging barrels during free tours offered on weekends. In the tasting room, sample St. George Single Malt whiskey, made from roasted and smoked barley spirits, and the well-known Breaking & Entering Bourbon, blended and aged onsite from a selection of Kentucky bourbons.

Stay: The distillery is a quick cab ride across San Francisco Bay from The St. Regis San Francisco . Decorated in sleek creams and dark woods, the Five-Star hotel has contemporary art installations that echo the vibrant museum and shopping districts just beyond its doors.

Stay: About 20 miles southwest of Woodinville is downtown Seattle ’s The Fairmont Olympic Hotel. The Four-Star hotel has unique 1920’s Italian Renaissance architecture and top-notch service just a stroll away from Pike Place Market.

5. High West Distillery & Saloon, Park City, Utah . You can practically ski right into the tasting rooms in the restored mining-era home in Old Town Park City , located just blocks from some of Park City Resort’s ski runs. A 250-gallon copper pot is visible from the street through floor-to-ceiling windows, and here you can learn how whiskey is made in small batches before sampling a few of the 12 labels offered, including a barrel-aged Manhattan called The 36th Vote (in honor of Utah’s role in repealing Prohibition). Whiskeys run the gamut from 12-year old barrel-aged ryes to un-aged western oat “silver whiskeys.” Free afternoon tours are available daily by reservation.

Stay: The Five-Star Stein Eriksen Lodge is two miles away in the luxury resort community of Deer Valley. The clubby-classic wood décor, majestic fireplaces, heated sidewalks and outdoor activities keep the mountain magic alive year round.

6. Buffalo Trace, Frankfort, Ky. All bourbons are whiskey, but not all whiskeys are bourbons: A trip to Buffalo Trace in Kentucky’s Bourbon County will help you decode this riddle once and for all (hint: bourbon must be made from at least 51 percent corn). Its century-old warehouses are open for free hourly tours Monday through Saturday, winding through the reportedly haunted distillery and barrel-aging facility before finishing up with tastes of Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and chocolate bourbon balls. Take it up a notch (but be prepared to pay) with tastes of aged Pappy Van Winkle or George T. Stagg, also bottled here.

Stay: The 90-room 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville doubles as a contemporary art museum and cultural center in the heart of the historic downtown, about 55 miles west of Buffalo Trace.

Stay: Combine a visit to Woodford Reserve with one to Buffalo Trace (about 11 miles north) for a fun, whiskey-filled day trip. Be sure to try 21c Museum Hotel’s restaurant, Proof on Main.

8. Balcones Distillery, Waco, Texas If the idea of whiskey made from 100 percent roasted blue corn intrigues you, visit the Balcones Distillery and try to decipher its super-secret method of smoking liquid whiskey. Founder and head distiller Chip Tate’s crafted and installed the copper still onsite in 2009, and a factory tour gets you an up-close look at every step of the double distillation and aging process. Round off your tour with a sampling of lightly aged Baby Blue and the rich True Blue corn whiskey in the barrel-lined tasting room.

Stay: Book a suite at the Four-Star Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek , about 100 miles north of the distillery, to mimic the measured pace of Balcones’ deliberate methodology. Located in a charming residential neighborhood along a winding, wooded creek, the hotel boasts elegant Italianate architecture and a gracious, welcoming staff.

9. RoughStock Distillery, Bozemon, Mont. This distillery uses local water from mountain-fed streams and Montana-grown wheat, barley and corn to produce its five labels, including un-aged sweet corn white whiskey and a barley whiskey bottled at cask strength (undiluted after barrel aging). Tours of Roughstock are half-day volunteer “bottling parties,” where visitors are put to work filling and labeling bottles before hitting the tasting room. Plan ahead, as the working tours are only offered three Saturdays a month.

Stay: Make a day trip to the distillery from the ultimate glamping destination, The Resort at Paws Up in Greenough, Mont., a hilly retreat on the Blackfoot River that offers upscale safari-style tent camping from May though September.

10. Tuthilltown Spirits, Gardiner, New York . As one of very few whiskey distilleries in the state, Tuthilltown made a splash when it produced New York’s first bourbon in 2006 — Hudson Baby Bourbon, a 100 percent corn, single-grain spirit that’s aged in oak barrels. Here you can taste five different labels including an aged rye, a white dog whiskey and a four-grain bourbon. Visit the 220-year-old gristmill on Friday through Sunday for tours to see batches labeled by hand, or visit in fall when harvest season sends distillerymen out into nearby rye fields.

Stay: Nestled in the Catskills, Emerson Resort & Spa in Mount Tremper — 35 miles north of Tuthilltown — is a country retreat that puts visitors in the center of a thriving summer art festival scene.

One to watch: WhistlePig Farm, Shoreham, Vt. While not yet an actual distillery, this restored Vermont farm is where hand-selected whiskey blends become WhistlePig Straight Rye under the direction of master distiller Dave Pickerell (he honed his craft at Maker’s Mark). WhistlePig Farm is growing high-quality grain for future blends and storing both oak and used bourbon barrels full of 100 percent rye spirits — aged for 10 years before bottling — for its 100 proof rye. Tours are scheduled to start up this fall.

Stay: The countryside takes a starring role during a stay at Five-Star Twin Farms in Barnard, Vt., with secluded private cabins decorated in different themes, from Moroccan to Scandinavian. From here, it’s a picturesque 60-mile drive on bucolic mountain roads to WhistlePig Farm.

Vendome Copper & Brass Works – Crafting Custom Copper Stills for over 100 Years

Vendome Copper & Brass Works – Crafting Custom Copper Stills for over 100 Years

The smiling tour guide at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience stopped walking and gestured to a shining structure displayed prominently on the other side of the glass. “And this is our copper pot still,” she beamed proudly. “This critical component of our artisanal distillery can produce around a barrel of bourbon a day.” Her smile widened as her cheery tone took on just a hint of bragging. “And it was custom made just for us by the Vendome Company.” Similar scenes play out countless times across The Kentucky Bourbon Trail ® and beyond. One common name that you’ll find at more and more bourbon distilleries is the one that’s imprinted on the face of their stills, tanks and other distilling equipment: Louisville’s own Vendome Copper and Brass Works .

Finding Vendome

Vendome’s headquarters and manufacturing facility is a sprawling urban set up that is surprisingly easy to miss. Located just two blocks off busy Main Street and less than 300 feet from Thomas Edison’s 1866 Kentucky residence , Vendome Corp’s five buildings sit snugly between a city skate park and an imposing Ohio River Flood Wall. The manufacturer is almost always bustling with activity these days. The sound of constant hammering, pounding, and grinding of various components echoes across the street, while workers sporting shirts with the logo “The Power of Our Stills” move swiftly from one building to another. Beneath the downtown skyline, an open garage offers a sneak peek to half a dozen gorgeous, new copper stills of various sizes that are in various stages of completion. Business at Vendome is indeed good.

History of Vendome Copper

Building in-demand gear is nothing new to Vendome. The company was formed by W. Elmore Sherman, Sr. at the turn of the last century and has been family owned and operated for well over a hundred years. Vendome has had their share of challenges over their long history including significant downturns in whiskey production, The Great Flood of 1937 , and even Prohibition. Over time and with some perseverance, the Sherman family name has become just as familiar among Bourbon aficionados as other industry lineages like the Beams, Samuels, and Boswells of the Independent Stave Company . Vendome’s prolonged success can be attributed to their craftsmanship, flexibility and service.

Every single still is custom designed; no job is too big and no craft distillery’s needs are too small. Customers can even choose one of three different finishes for their still including an acid clean, satin finish or a labor-intensive high-polished mirror finish for that perfect distillery tour shine. Beyond visual appeal, copper has been the preferred metal since the time of even the earliest whiskey distillers. The copper generates a chemical reaction between the mash and the metal which pulls out unwanted sulfates and Sulfur.

Vendome Clients

Today, new stills are regularly being installed at distilleries across the country. When The Old Taylor Distillery outside of Versailles, KY needed new equipment last summer as part of its ongoing complete restoration, Master Distiller Marianne Barnes commissioned Vendome. The result? A massive 24-inch copper column still coupled with a 375-gallon copper doubler.

Today, far beyond The Kentucky Bourbon Trail, Vendome’s copper stills can be found in Guatemala, Canada, Ireland and even Romania. And while Vendome may be best known for their stunning stills, the company also produces stainless steel fermenters, cookers, condensers, coolers, receiving tanks and more. It could be argued that Vendome can build just about everything you might need to start a distillery except the corn, rye, barley and yeast.

Vendome’s roster of clients over the years reads like a who’s who in the world of Bourbon and American Whiskey: Michter’s, Evan Williams, Jim Beam , Angel’s Envy , Maker’s Mark, Four Roses and Buffalo Trace just to name a few. Vendome’s customers further extend beyond alcohol to pharmaceutical companies, confectionary businesses and dairy operators. Today, the waiting list for a custom still may be close to a year. All of this has made Vendome one of the most in-demand brass and copper fabrication plants in the nation.

Next time you visit a bourbon distillery, be on the lookout for Vendome’s signature plaque on new and old gear. Beyond Kentucky’s beloved limestone filtered water and the charred oak barrels, one common element that an increasing number of distilleries are sharing is custom gear from Vendome Copper and Brass Works. And, just maybe, the robust copper construction and a century of craftsmanship could make the bourbon that ends up in the bottle taste a little bit better than others.

Vendome Brass and Copper Works is located at 729 East Franklin Street Louisville, KY 40202 and currently does not offer tours to the public. A visit to the exterior building of Vendome may be requested on a personalized, custom tour with Mint Julep Tours. Many of Vendome’s stills and other equipment can been viewed at distilleries on and off The Kentucky Bourbon Trail ®. I booked a private bus with Pegasus for a "design your own" bourbon tour for a bachelor party group of 9, and they were great! The staff is knowledgeable in helping narrow down your stops based on optimizing your visit and your interests. You might have to reach out to them a few times to get in contact, but no more so than any company with similar services. Our bus driver Ben was the real MVP. Totally great guy! He made our experience awesome. He was friendly, helpful, and even arranged a last minute tour for us at another distillery when we were running ahead of schedule. 10/10 would recommend!

This is how you get the best Kentucky Bourbon experience! We had several meals and tours arranged but our driver was able to give advice based on our interests and set up a few insider tours. Tasting the bourbon directly from the barrels was a special treat!!! Montana was our driver and he knew what he was doing!!

We took the Manhattan Tour this weekend and had the best time. Our driver, Eli, went out of his way to make it an amazing day. The tour was very organized, on time, and made our group feel comfortable. Eli provided snacks, drinks, a goodie bag, great conversation, and even a rose for the ladies! We would definitely use Copper Still Tours again!

I was in Kentucky just two weeks ago and used Pegasus all weekend. I had two different drivers and they were both friendly and knowledgeable. There was some big music festival (forecastle) so Louisville was pretty packed. Pegasus was on the ball. They knew which areas to avoid. Then my Bardstown trip there was an accident on the road and they notified my group about it and took an alternate route to avoid the road delay. I coordinated my trip with Eddie and he was amazing. He really knows Bourbon, Kentucky and transportation. I consider myself a bit of a bourbon geek and we hit it off. I'll be using them anytime I'm going to Kentucky because I drink a lot and I won't drive!!

Thinking of a bourbon tour look no further than the Manhattan tour with Pegasus. Eli our tour guide was top notch! Great experience

Hi Marguerite! Thank you so very much for sharing! We really appreciate the review. Eli rocks and we passed along the wonderful review to him as well. Cheers The Pegasus Family

My husband and I recently completed our 3 Day Bourbon Trail tour of 10 distilleries thru Copper Still Tours for his 65th birthday and it was everything I could have hoped it would be. Transportation was arranged thru R and R Limousine and our driver was Ed and he was great. He gave us a wealth of information about the area's history and also the various distillery's features. He gave us suggestions for lunch stops and also for dinner after our day was over. This is the only way to do the tour. Thank you Copper Still Tours and Ed for a memorable trip.

My wife and I booked the three day Trailblazer Tour through Copper Still. They took care of making reservations at each distillery and provided itineraries for all three days beforehand. We especially enjoyed our driver, Jim, who transported us in a safe and timely manner over the course of three days. He was also engaging and willing to provide tips and factoids about our destinations. Our vehicle was well stocked with snacks and soft drinks each day which was greatly appreciated. We would undoubtedly recommend Copper Still to anyone interested in a comprehensive experience on the Bourbon Trail.

Susan Holland was an amazing driver. She was very accommodating. Arrived early at hotel and left on time. When traffic & tours ran into our lunch break she dropped us off and went & picked up lunch so we could eat on the road and continue on schedule to our afternoon stop. She was friendly, attentive and an all around great host. Highly recommend!

Copper Still Manhattan bourbon tour

We had a wonderful tour to 4 distilleries- Woodford reserve, Buffalo trace, four roses and angel’s envy. Eli was a excellent tour guide. I would highly recommend him for your tour and would love the opportunity to tour with him again. Eli was a gracious host. He gave us thoughtful gifts, was very accommodating and made us several delicious mint juleps through the day. The distilleries were all very different from each other and interesting in their own way. Our favorite was Angel’s Envy where we met several of the Henderson family members and my husband posed with one of the brothers for a photo ️

copper still tours

They were on time and the van was new, clean, and comfortable. Ask for Ben who was our driver, he did a great job of keeping us entertained and comfortable for the day while we toured Woodford, Buffalo Trace, and Angel's Envy. Would definitely book with them again based on this experience.

Our trip started out with an unexpected change in distillery tours. Angels Envy had apparently cancelled and we were not notified. They scrambled to find another tour to visit. Our van was full with 11 people and NO air conditioning in the 90+ heat. We were told another van was going to meet to help us, but that they had a flat tire. We were told when we booked several months ago that we could stop for lunch if we wanted to, but there were so many great snacks provided on the bus that we probably wouldnt be hungry. Mid morning the driver passed around bags of potato chips and water. We finally stopped for BBQ about 2. By the time we got back to Louisville we were very hot, disappointed and sick from the heat. I talked with the fleet manager (Clint) who apologized, but the owner couldnt be bothered. He said he would check into it and call me back, but that didnt happen.

I'll start off by disclosing that our initial experience with Copper Still tours was not a positive one. We booked the Old Fashioned group tour through Copper Still tours as part of a long weekend of bourbon tasting in Kentucky. I had booked the tour online about a week in advance (so fairly last minute). The morning of our tour, we walked from our hotel in downtown Louisville to the Brown hotel (Copper Still's pick-up and drop-off location). My confirmation email said that the vehicle would depart the Brown at 8:45, and to be there 15 minutes earlier. We got to the Brown at about 8:20 and saw a Copper Still vehicle. That driver said he was doing the "Manhattan" tour and that a driver should be by shortly to pick us up to for the Old Fashioned tour. 8:50 comes around and there's still no other vehicle. At this point, I called Copper Still to see what was going on. The woman I talked to seemed confused and after I gave her the confirmation number in my email, she said "that doesn't sound like one of our confirmation numbers". After being put on hold for a second time and very frustrated by this point, I was told that a driver would come out to pick us up and (hopefully) catch up to where we were supposed to be (Maker's Mark distillery). It wasn't until almost 9:30 that a very nice Lincoln limousine pulled up. The driver, though nice enough, was in a tee shirt and seemed about as confused as the woman I talked to on the phone. He got us to Maker's Mark, and we did the tour (see my other review). It wasn't until our second stop that we met up with the rest of our group (two nice, older ladies). In total, we did 3 stops, including Maker's Mark, Bardstown Bourbon Company, and Copper and Kings (see other reviews). The tour took pretty much the whole day, as we got back to the Brown hotel around 7 pm. Larry, who was our official driver, took over from there. He was also very nice, polite and courteous. Larry even took us to jail - an old county jail that once housed Jesse James. Though I realize that the drivers were not at fault for the rough start to our day, my rating for Copper Still tours reflects the disorganization, confusion, and lack of communication that we experienced getting our day under way. The tour is not cheap (we paid $180 each), and we expected a little better organization. We also never received the supposedly-included bag of snacks and treats. In all, the drivers and vehicles were great, but the stress to start the day ultimately made me not recommend this tour group.

What an awesome tour! We went to Woodford, Buffalo Trace and Angel's Envy, and got really lucky that Blanton's was available at Buffalo Trace. Eli is an awesome driver, I would highly recommend asking for him if you take any Copper Still tours!

First let me say that Rick our driver was the nicest Tour Driver I have ever had! He was prompt and even reached out to us in advance to ensure pick-up location was confirmed. The tour bus was clean, fully stocked with snacks and beverages for us to enjoy, and Rick even pointed out the Bluetooth connection so we could pipe in our own music from our iPhone. Rick continued to ask if temperature of bus was ok, if we needed anything else, and gave us a nice overview of sites and stops along the way to each of the three distilleries. The courteous and friendly environment of the whole Copper Still Tour experience leads us to want to return to KY and sign up for another tour soon!

Copper Mine Tours

Copper mine tours.

Our copper mines tell the stories of the brave men and women who traveled from around the world to seek wealth and prosperity during the copper booms of the late 1800s and early 1900s!

The first mineral boom in the United States occurred in 1843 when people from all over the continent began to chase the copper, silver and iron of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. These mines were in commercial operation for more than a hundred years.

The first copper mine opened in 1771, and its owner, Alexander Henry, sent the massive Ontonagon Boulder–of pure native copper–to Detroit as evidence of the region’s richness. But speculative activity did not begin in earnest until 1841, hastened by the favorable reports of the first state geologist, Douglas Houghton. These reports, combined with publicity given the Ontonagon Boulder, sparked the first mineral rush in the nation, predating by several years the more famous California gold rush. Between 1843 and 1846, thousands of prospectors arrived from the East with the hope of “striking it rich.”

These events brought a rush of copper-seeking prospectors into the Upper Peninsula in the early 1840s. Copper mining has been almost continuous in the Keweenaw Peninsula area for the 150 years since then. During that time over  12 billion pounds of native copper have been mined .*

Today, visitors are still enthralled by the passion and perseverance of the men and women who toiled deep below the surface to extract copper ore. Their stories, both hardships and triumphs, can be experienced through tours of the mines that generated incredible wealth and industry.

THE HISTORIC QUINCY MINE

America’s first mining boom began as prospectors and speculators rushed to mine deposits of native copper along the Keweenaw Peninsula. For 99 years Quincy mined these deposits and its impressive string of dividends earned it the name of “Old Reliable”. Today, the Quincy Mine Hoist Association offers tours of this National Historic Landmark.

Regularly scheduled tours are available throughout the summer. Tours are also available during the winter, but on a less frequent schedule or by appointment. Reservations are highly recommended during the summer, as tour slots fill up quickly. Make a tour reservation or learn more by visiting the Quincy Mine website.   Tours at Quincy are a unique experience. A cogwheel tram will take you underground into the 43°F mine. While our native-born guides find that temperature refreshing, visitors may want to bring a windbreaker or light sweatshirt. Suitable shoes for walking are recommended for graveled/wet surfaces–sandals, flip-flops or other open-toe footwear are not advisable. All parts of the tour are fully accessible, but but be sure to make reservations in advance to ensure availability of guides.

QUINCY SMELTER

The Quincy Mining Company built the Quincy Smelting Works on the banks of the Portage Canal in 1898. Quincy constructed the smelter to refine and ship its own copper, as well as to accept custom work from neighboring mining operations. With the decline of the industry after World War II, however, the local sources of profitable copper diminished to the point that it no longer made sense to keep the facility open. Quincy closed the smelter in 1971. Seasonal Tours are also available of the Quincy Smelting Works, located on the waterfront of the Portage Canal! Find more information here or call 906-482-3101.

THE DELAWARE MINE

The Delaware Mine  is an authentic mine that operated from 1847 until 1887, during the country’s first major mining boom. The mine was supported by a group of investors, including Horace Greeley. Although the mine didn’t make any money for its investors, it now serves as the perfect example of what the mines in this area were like in the 1800s. Visitors walk down 100 feet of stairs through the #1 shaft to the first level of the mine, then walk approximately 1700 feet through the original workings to experience a self-guided tour.

THE PAINESDALE MINE & SHAFT

Champion #4 Shaft House in Painesdale  was built in 1902 as part of the Copper Range Mining Co. mines that ran from Atlantic Mine to Painesdale, MI. Champion #4 operated for nearly 65 years before closing in 1967.  Tours can be arranged to view the inside of the shaft house, hoist house, and the Captain’s office. Champion #4 Shaft House offers free tours by appointment.

THE ADVENTURE MINE

A walk through the  Adventure Mine  provides the opportunity to experience copper mining as it truly was in the 1800s. View the world’s greatest copper district — actually traversing underground wearing a simple hardhat with a headlamp to light your way. Four distinct tours are offered: a 45-minute underground walk, a one-hour-and-20-minute underground hike, a three-hour underground tour that includes rappelling down an 80′ shaft, and a six-hour-long excursion to the second level of the mine with lunch underground included (advanced reservations required for the six-hour tour). .

Copper is at the source of our modern society. It’s a primary metal used in the hospitals where we were born, the electricity in our homes, the tools that farm our food, and the transportation that powers our next adventure.

Fun fact: Copper is also naturally found in us and helps make red blood cells and keeps immune systems healthy.

We invite you to take our free self-guided tour of the center’s indoor and outdoor exhibits, which walks through the copper transformation process. Then join the mine tour for a firsthand look! Afterward, peruse the Company Store for unique and educational gifts.

Our Vision Since 1997

Since we opened our doors in 1997, the ASARCO Mineral Discovery Center & Mine Tours’ vision has been to educate communities on the vital importance of the copper mining industry to our civilization, to educate students and teachers in earth sciences, and to preserve Arizona’s mining history.

In addition to our offerings to the public, we proudly support Arizona schools by providing free transportation to the ASARCO Mineral Discovery Center and free mine tours to students.

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Tour Itinerary

With the 1000-year history, Russia has had a rich portfolio of conflicts, battles, wars. On this Soviet tour, we'll talk about various wars that happened in Russia, focusing on WWII.

Mother Russia has undergone a lot in its long life. Since ancient times, Russian rulers have taken nearly all political power into their own hands. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian oppositional movement was deadly set for the total destruction of the ever-lasting tsarist regime. All of Russia got involved in the bloody revolution of 1917 in an effort to abolish the current state of the government and gain freedom for the ordinary people.

You will learn about the every-day life of the Soviet people during the bloody Second World War with the Nazis, including the legendary Battle for Moscow, the 900-day siege of Leningrad, the hardships that local citizens went through, the consequences of the war and the scars it left on the Soviet people, as well as why the Cold War happened and what was the fundamental reason.

Our mission on the Soviet Russia tour is to find out

  • - How much this 1917 revolution cost the people;
  • - Whether they actually got the freedom they wanted and was it worth it;
  • - What happened over the next 74 years;
  • - Who were the main political communist leaders of the Soviet Union;
  • - Were Russians happy and satisfied with the Soviet Union?

Our tour itinerary will lie in most Soviet areas of Moscow, which are quite spread throughout the city, as very few of them are left. You can choose how much you are ready to live this Soviet life on a 5, 7 or 10-hour tour. Depending on the duration of the tour, you will see part or all of the places below:

If you want to extend the tour, you are welcome to do so by paying $20/extra hour in cash on the tour.

Time stands still in Red Square. The Red Square is the heart of Moscow (and whole Russia). Saint Basil's Cathedral will make your mouth drop. If it is from May-October, have a cocktail on the outside terrace and simply people watch! The massive square offers so much to enjoy.

Lenin's Mausoleum

The burial place of one of the most influential communist leaders in the world.

Revolution Square Metro Station

Rub the Soviet dog's nose for good luck and admire the 76 bronze sculptures, devoted to the passionate, strong-willed and patriotic Soviet people.

Poklonnaya Hill

The highest point in Moscow, where Napoleon waited for keys of the city.

All-Russian Exhibition Center (VVC)

With its giant arch, amazing fountain, and huge pavilions of different Soviet Republics.

Victory Park Metro Station

The deepest undeground station in Moscow and one of the deepest in the world.

Victory Park

For an open-air museum as big as 135 ha (1 350 000 square meters), Victory park sure doens't lack diversity. The park is dedicated to the Russian victory in WWII, and was laid out in 1995 in commemoration of 50-year anniversary of victory.

Stalin had planned for its construction already in 1941, being sure of victory from the very start of the war.

Greeting Hill

The highest points in Moscow (172 meters), where Napoleon waited for keys of Moscow in vain.

Triumphal Arch

Stunning monument consisting of 12 cast-iron columns, each 12 meters high, and weighing 16 tons. Built to mark Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812.

Museum of the Great Patriotic War

In the city that is as much about wars as it is about victories, there is one essential stopover - the Museum of the Great Patriotic War (that's what WWII is called in Russia). Must-do for those wishing to understand Russia's past and look at the whole war from the different perspective - Russian.

The museum is not for the faint-hearted. Here you can see films about the partisan experience, the scenes that will haunt you forever (no subtitles, but they are not necessary).

Museum of Contemporary History (from outside only)

We'll have a glance at Russian life of the XX century in the  Museum of Contemporary History , which houses bits of everything from Russian history of XXth century: from English club to a storage of Stalin's presents.

Memorial to the Holocaust,

devastating and breath-taking!

Unleash your inner spy. Highly recommended  Bunker-42 ,  Cold War Museum , explore the place where Khrushchev lived during the Cuban Crisis. Go down 18 floors to a gigantic bunker under Moscow that was designed to withstand a nuclear attack. Watch a short film about the severity of the Cold War. If you lived through the Cold War, you will hardly believe it is possible that you are in Bunker 42!

Wander through  Sparrow Hills  and climb up to the highest observation deck of Moscow with stunning views of all seven Stalin’s skyscrapers, including  Moscow State University . After that, experience the excitement of taking a  river cruise  on the Moscow river and catch the views of the Kremlin and Soviet times.

Copper Mountain announces 2024 closing day

Copper Mountain Resort/Courtesy photo

On Thursday, May 2, Copper Mountain Resort announced it will wrap up one of its longest ski seasons ever on Sunday, May 12.

Copper received 60 inches of snowfall in April, racking up major single-day snowfall totals, including an 18-inch powder day on April 16. The influx of snow paired with Copper’s high elevation and north-facing aspect made for a well-preserved snow surface throughout the season.

Starting Monday, skiing and riding operations will be based solely out of Center Village with access to the mountain via the American Eagle lift. Copper will have four terrain parks open, including a hike park with rail features at the top of American Eagle, access to the 22-foot superpipe, a cross-course adjacent to the top of the superpipe, and rail and jump features located below the base of the superpipe.

Parking is free in all interior lots, excluding Ten Mile.

Copper will offer limited food and beverage options out of Starbucks and Jack’s Slopeside Grill through the end of the season. Day tickets will cost $99. Copper’s uphill Route 1 up to Aerie Lodge will remain open before and after hours. An armband and uphill pass is required to participate.

As a Summit Daily News reader, you make our work possible.

Summit Daily is embarking on a multiyear project to digitize its archives going back to 1989 and make them available to the public in partnership with the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection. The full project is expected to cost about $165,000. All donations made in 2023 will go directly toward this project.

Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference.
