Morocco Birding Tours

The Kingdom of Morocco (“Morocco” hereafter) is an underappreciated jewel for bird watching and a Morocco birding tour should feature high on your wish list of birding tours. As tour operators, we are really excited to introduce our Morocco birding tours, find out why below.

Stretching along the northwest corner of  Africa , its position, history, culture, and geography make it a land of contrast and experience. Morocco’s capital, Rabat, sits on the Atlantic coastline and has a population of around 500,000 people, while the most populous and famous city, is Casablanca, home to 3.3 million people. In total around 36.5 million people live in Morocco, across an area a little larger than the  US  state of  Texas . Morocco shares land borders with Mauritania (via Morocco’s claim to Western Sahara), Algeria and  Spain  (via the Spanish overseas territories). Its west coast borders the Atlantic Ocean while its north borders the Alboran Sea (the westernmost section of the Mediterranean Sea) and the world-famous Straits of Gibraltar, one of the top bird migration hotspots in  Europe .

The Moroccan state was formed in 768 AD by Arab Muslims and lasted until the 11th century when the Berber tribes took control of the country. Later, Portugal, Spain and  England  held territories in the country. Morocco was unified in 1631 and eventually drove out all foreign nations, however in the 19th century Europe’s industrialization led to interest in Morocco, it was then that the Spanish territory of Cueta was formed. Then in the early part of the 20th century Spain increased its share in Morocco and  France  also held large parts of the country. In 1957, after years of political wrangling, Morocco finally became independent, once more, under the rule of Sultan Mohammed.

Read More About Morocco

The geography of Morocco is dominated by the vast Rif and Atlas mountain ranges and, of course, the world-famous Sahara Desert. The Rif Mountains form the tip of North  Africa  and are an extension of the Baetic mountain system of southern  Spain . The area is surprisingly wet and as such is covered in lush forests, home to the Critically Endangered  Barbary Macaque . The vast Atlas Mountains stretch across North Africa for 1,600 miles (2,500 kilometers), one of its peaks Toubkal is the highest mountain in Morocco at 13,671 feet (4,167 meters). Snowfall is regular in this range, despite its more southerly position in Morocco. Finally, the Sahara Desert makes up the southeastern part of Morocco. Its massive size and staggering temperature variations providing a huge obstacle for the millions of migrating birds moving between Europe and West Africa.

Following  International Ornithological Congress (IOC)  taxonomy (v10.2 in October 2020) the bird list of Morocco stands at  509 bird species , with 34 of these being globally threatened. Morocco has one intriguing breeding endemic species, the incredibly rare, impossibly ugly, and Endangered (BirdLife International)  Northern Bald Ibis , though there is some ambiguity to this, as a population of what was considered to be this species has recently been discovered breeding much further east (e.g. in Syria). However, the birds in Syria appear to be migratory (to  Ethiopia ), whereas the birds in Morocco are sedentary, so it is possible they may actually be different species. A breeding and reintroduction project is underway for the species in southern Spain. One of the most important sites for the species in Morocco is the  Souss Massa National Park  (which includes the famous Oued Massa River). The national park is home to three of the four world’s known  Northern Bald Ibis  breeding colonies. BirdLife International recognize this area as an Important Bird Area (IBA), one of  49 IBAs  in the country. During our tour we will visit several other IBAs, such as when we bird at Erg Chebbi, which is part of the  Merzouga/Tamezgidat IBA .

Morocco has numerous highly sought-after regional endemics that are easier to find here than elsewhere, these specialties will form the focus of our tour. Spring migration will be in full flow and will provide an additional bonus spectacle too.

Our Morocco birding tour highlights include Levaillant’s Woodpecker ,  Houbara Bustard ,  Tristram’s Warbler ,  Moussier’s Redstart ,  Streaked Scrub Warbler  (a monotypic family), and of course the aforementioned  Northern Bald Ibis  providing the icing on the cake! Other targets include  Barbary Partridge ,  Marbled Duck ,  Ferruginous Duck ,  Cream-colored Courser ,  White Stork ,  Audouin’s Gull ,  West African Crested Tern ,  Baillon’s Crake ,  Great Spotted Cuckoo ,  Egyptian Nightjar ,  White-rumped Swift ,  Pharaoh Eagle-Owl ,  Maghreb Owl ,  Marsh Owl ,  Alpine Chough , four sandgrouse species, numerous birds of prey, such as  Bearded Vulture  (Lammergeier),  Bonelli’s Eagle ,  Dark Chanting Goshawk ,  Long-legged Buzzard , and  Lanner Falcon .  European  and  Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters  will fill the days with color while the trip will be dominated by a wide range of exciting passerines, including  Black-crowned Tchagra ,  Maghreb Magpie ,  African Blue Tit ,  Greater Hoopoe-Lark ,  Thick-billed Lark ,  Desert Lark ,  Bar-tailed Lark ,  Maghreb Lark ,  Dunn’s Lark ,  Black-crowned Sparrow-Lark ,  Cricket Warbler ,  African Desert Warbler ,  Fulvous Babbler ,  Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin ,  Atlas Pied Flycatcher ,  Desert Wheatear ,  Red-rumped Wheatear ,  White-crowned Wheatear ,  Mourning Wheatear ,  White-throated Dipper ,  Desert Sparrow ,  Alpine Accentor ,  African Crimson-winged Finch , and  Trumpeter Finch . Full tour details can be found  here .

One bird that we will keep dreaming about seeing is the Critically Endangered, and most-likely extinct  Slender-billed Curlew , this species previously over-wintered in Morocco but has not been seen for many years now.

The birds of Morocco obviously make up an important part of our tour but so does the incredible culture, food, landscapes, and climate. Come and take a look for yourselves, we are sure you will be enthralled by this special corner of North Africa.

What customers say about Gayuin Birding Tours ?

Our highly targeted custom birding trip in southern Morocco was absolutely outstanding. My wife and I are world birders with large life lists and needed some 30 birds in the region. Based on our success in previous tours with major birding companies, we figured we might get 23 of them. But the incredibly precise knowledge of Brahim Mezane about the birds and their habitats in this area resulted in us getting good views of 31 lifers! And we got excellent photographs of many of them, including the Pharaoh “Gayuin” Eagle-owl, the Thick-billed Lark and the critically endangered Waldrapp, or Northern Bald Ibis. Brahim also made sure we had excellent accommodations and food (Moroccan food cannot be beat!), and he arranged for us to get some interesting insights into the Berber Bedouin culture from which he comes. We highly recommend that any birder looking for a superb trip anywhere in Morocco contact Brahim and his company, Gayuin Birding Tours / www.gayuin.com

We booked the desert day trip during our birdwatching trip to Morocco since, unfortunately, we did not have a lot of time around Merzouga. During the well-organised tour Hamid of Gayuin Birding Tours was able to show as all “key bird species” as well as many more and we enjoyed a fantastic day in wonderful company. Thanks again!

We look forward to birding with you. Gayuin Birding Tours Team !!!

Maghreb Wheatear Field Guides Birding Tours Morocco

From the scenic Atlantic coast via the forested Atlas Mountains to the very edge of the great Sahara desert, Morocco is magnificent at any season. Blessed with the richest birdlife in northwest Africa, the country deservedly ranks as one of the Western Palearctic's truly great birding destinations. Specialties of the region include Eleonora's Falcon, Barbary Partridge, Double-spurred Francolin, Levaillant's Woodpecker, Moussier's Redstart, African Desert and Tristram's warblers, African Blue Tit, Desert Sparrow, and the Critically Endangered Waldrapp (Northern Bald Ibis).

For those with an interest in regional races and forms, this is an exciting area, too. In fact, a number of birds here may yet be elevated to full species--among them the distinctive forms of Long-legged Buzzard, Purple Swamphen, White Wagtail, Mourning and Northern wheatears, Eurasian Magpie, and Chaffinch (several have already been split within the last few years, for example Maghreb Magpie and African Blue Tit).

A long history of settlement by an array of different peoples, including the Moors and Berbers, as well as strong French and Spanish influences, has produced a country that not only has a wonderfully diverse birdlife but an exciting and varied culture, too. Morocco is not a wealthy country; hotels vary, but in the main they are good and come as a pleasant surprise to most visitors. This coupled with the country's often spectacular and ever-changing landscape, its distinctive Moorish cuisine, and a people noted for their traditions of hospitality and warmth, should make this a tour to remember!

Tour pace Our Morocco Birding Tour is a very enriching tour in many senses of the word. The birds of Morocco are the main focus in the tour but we will also allow time for other forms of Nature , for the people in Morocco and even a bit of cultural sightseeing. The walking is easy and on good paths or tracks. Be ready to find rocks and dust, you're in predesertic areas! There is just one day on which there is a long drive (5h). Most of the birding is done within a short distance of our minibus.

Food, of course Both breakfast and dinner will be served locally at the hotel. The lunch will take place at local restaurants on most of the days, where we will enjoy its rich local gastronomy. The most typical Moroccan option in the tour is the several types of Tajini , which normally allow for a vegetarian option if needed. Moroccan bread and tea are commonly served.

Give something back to Africa By booking our tour you are contributing to the local economy. We will be hiring a local driver. We will also help promoting the nature tourism there, which is a key to protecting Moroccan birds and habitats.

Wild Andalucía guides this wildlife tour in Morocco by means of Andalucía Slow Tours, S.L., a Spanish travel agency accredited by the Spanish Tourist Board with number CIAN 297083-2.

Worldwide Birding Tours

Birding in Morocco

There is no doubt; Morocco is an accessible and exciting destination for birdwatching! Direct flights from most major airports throughout Europe make getting there easy and inexpensive. Birding in this exotic country is rewarding and an experience, with several prime species not present in Europe. We are veteran tour leaders here having led almost 20 tours for birdwatching holidays throughout Morocco, so our experience can lead you to areas discovered by us and produce such species as Desert Sparrow, Cream-coloured Courser and Brown-necked Raven. We travel the coastal areas during the autumn and in the spring we go on safari, travelling across the High Atlas to the deeper regions of the Sahara Desert, migrating birds join other great species during both seasons and we have a good record for finding such sought after species as Blue-cheeked Bee eater, Bald Ibis, Houbara Bustard, Egyptian Nightjar and of course many lark species including our favourite Hoopoe Lark. Of course we also do short break holidays on the Atlantic Coast of Morocco and these can be convenient for those wishing to combine Spain with this African destination.

Morocco Birding Safari

Our safari tour, during the spring, offers great birding, incredible landscapes and a holiday with a real difference. For birdwatching in Morocco, this tour is an absolute must join trip to experience the very best birding Morocco has to offer. We travel through many stunning scenic routes and of course see the ‘real’ Morocco and people as well as the birds. South of the High and Anti-Atlas mountain ranges lies the area of Saharan Morocco. The landscape here is varied and beautiful, not at all what one might expect whilst imagining an endless desert plain! The desert areas are largely pebble, but are interspersed by river courses whose green palms and gardens contrast with their surroundings. The sand deserts, more in keeping with our own imaginings of desert, are found in the areas of Mhamid in the extreme south of the Draa Valley and to the east close to Merzouga (Erg Chebbi). Why not join us?

Morocco Autumn Migration

A wonderful opportunity to enjoy both the bird migrating and rare breeding birds in Morocco. This bird watching tour has been especially tailored to take in some of the rarest birds in Morocco, whilst also timed to allow our fellow travellers to view autumn bird migration where ‘anything’ might turn-up. We also visit one of the largest breeding colonies in the world for Eleonora’s Falcon! From the fabulous old city of Marrakech to the Atlantic coast we will journey into the Anti Atlas Mountains and also stay in the southern deserts. The scenery alone is worth joining this birding tour for. Our usual high standard for accommodation applies and we have carefully selected restaurants and transport. Our journey allows us to take our time and we have selected some of our hotels specifically, not only for their comfort, but also their location. At 3 of these hotels we will spend 2 consecutive nights giving time for relaxation and enjoying their superb locations, these longer stays also give opportunities for individuals to miss touring with the group and do their own thing. Truly special Birding Holiday for those who also want comfort and time to relax! Bird Migration and rare breeding birds.

Bird-watching in Morocco: Where and when to go

White Storks in Marrakech, (photo by Ming Tang Evans)

Morocco lies under one of the two major migratory routes for European birds wintering in Africa.

Storks, ibis and flamingos are seen in the wetlands of river estuaries and coastal lagoons. Eagles and falcons sometimes wheel high in a semidesert sky. It's little surprise that the country is a haven for birders and twitchers from across the globe resulting in several tour companies offering dedicated bird-watching holidays; their expertise will help determine the place and time to go. Mid-March and mid-October are some of the best times to head out with binoculars in hand as this coincides with the birds passing over during mid-migration.

Particularly good areas include:

Oualidia , where the lagoons and salt pans attract flamingo, blackwinged stilt, avocet, audoin’s and slender-billed gulls

Islands off Essaouira , where a colony of eleonora’s falcon breed

Oued Massa for crested coot, pale crag martin, osprey and the rare bald Ibis

Souss Valley  for moussier’s redstart, bush and great grey shrike, lanner falcon and chanting goshawk

Anti-Atlas  for long-legged buzzards, cream-coloured courser and black wheatear

Jebel Saghro for desert sparrow, trumpeter bullfinch, brownnecked raven, rat-rumped wheatear and larks

A number of tour operators provide dedicated ornithological packages, try:

Naturetrek  for bird-watching and botanical tours in southern Morocco or the High Atlas Mountains.

Heather Lea  also offer package birding breaks.

BirdQuest  feature holidays covering the country.

Bird Watching in Morocco

Morocco is one of North Africa's best birding locations. There's a wide range of easily accessed sites in a rich diversity of habitats that are often very different from those found in neighboring Europe. More than 480 species have been recorded in Morocco, and birders can usually find something of interest throughout the year. Having said that, the period from March to May is considered the optimum bird-watching season, as a wide variety of species -- both resident and migrant -- are present, and the weather is generally mild and sunny. Morocco is an important stop for millions of migrants on their way to and from western Europe, and more than 100 species are considered regular winter visitors. Morocco offers good opportunities to see a range of birds such as larks, raptors, warblers, water birds, and wheatears, along with a few specific species that are difficult to find elsewhere.

Merja Zerga (80km/50 miles south of Tangier) was declared a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance back in 1980, and is one of the largest lagoons in Morocco. During the winter months, it's possible to see more than 1,000 greater flamingos, 30,000 ducks, 40,000 Eurasian coots, and 50,000 waders here. The small fishing village of Moulay Bousselham looks out over the lagoon, as well as the near-deserted Atlantic shoreline. Nearby is another Ramsar lagoon, the small but attractive Lac de Sidi Boughaba (30km/19 miles north of Rabat), which is also known for its large winter flocks. Present at various times of the year here are various raptors such as the marsh harrier, montagu harrier, black-shouldered kite, and occasionally Eleonora's falcon. Occasionally spotted at both lagoons are the rare slender-billed curlew and marsh owl.

The Souss-Massa National Park stretches for 70km (43 miles) south of Agadir and is bordered by the Oued Souss and Oued Massa. Best visited between September and April, the mouths of both rivers are among the best bird sites in the country, offering excellent viewing of waders such as avocet, black-winged stilt, and oystercatcher, as well as numerous species of gulls and terns roosting on the sandbars. Also present are many large water birds such as great cormorant, little egret, greater flamingo, gray heron, spoonbill, white stork, and the less common purple heron and glossy ibis. The area leading up to the mouth of the Oued Massa is considered the best spot in Morocco to sight the critically endangered waldrapp, better known as the northern bald ibis, which breeds on the nearby coastal cliffs. The large concentration of water birds consequently attracts numerous species of raptors such as Bonelli's eagle, marsh harrier, and Barbary, lanner, and peregrine falcons.

The islands offshore from the attractive seaside port of Essaouira are one of the world's largest -- and Morocco's only -- breeding sites for the endangered Eleonora's falcon. This migrant breeder resides here from late April to the end of October, and while the protected islands offer very limited access, the falcon can often be seen hunting at the mouth of the Oued Ksob, to the south of Essaouira's wide bay, during the prebreeding months of May and June.

In the Western High Atlas mountains, both the highly sought-after white-rumped swift and Levaillant's woodpecker can often be seen in the valleys around Asni and Imlil, along with large flocks of both red-billed and alpine chough. The pleasant drive from Marrakech to Oukaïmeden passes through several habitats and offers diverse sightings such as rufous bush robin, alpine swifts, and black wheatear. The little-known crimson-winged finch is a rare resident that can be spotted around Ouakïmeden, as well in the higher reaches of the Middle Atlas.

Possible sightings in the fertile lower valleys of both the Oued Todra and Oued Dadès include common bulbul, gold finch, hoopoe, scops owl, white stork, and blue tit, along with blackbird, nightingale, and various warblers. Breeding specifically in the Dadès Valley is the great spotted woodpecker. Both valleys are also good spots to sight spring migrants, including the pretty European bee-eater, while their gorges offer possible sightings of long-legged buzzard and golden and Bonelli's eagles.

Following the course of the often-dry Oued Dra, the Dra Valley, at various times through the year, is home to many varied species, including little owl and Egyptian vulture. From April to September, the sought-after blue-cheeked bee-eater can also be spotted here, as well as in the palm groves of the Tafilalt region around Erfoud and Merzouga.

Another prized Moroccan sighting is the tristram's warbler, which breeds solely in the scrub of the High Atlas mountains (but is a winter visitor to both the Dadès and Dra valleys) and the tamarisk trees found along the fringe of the Erg Chebbi desert dunes near Merzouga. It also winters in the Souss Valley, which is well known for regular sightings of tawny eagle and dark chanting goshawk.

Special mention must also be made of the impressive migration across the Straits of Gibraltar, which can be observed onshore within the vicinity of Tangier. More than 250 mainly European species have been recorded making the 15km (9-mile) crossing -- mainly between March and May and August and October -- including bee-eaters, finches, flamingos, gulls, larks, shearwaters, swallows, and wagtails, along with high concentrations of raptors and storks.

As yet, there are no Moroccan-based English-speaking tour operators offering specialized birding tours, and local English-speaking specialists are also sparse. In the village of Moulay Bousselham, local ornithologist Hassan Dalil (tel. 0668/434110 ) comes highly recommended from fellow travelers, as witnessed in the Birder's Log housed in Restaurant Milano, on the one main street. Mohammed Zaki (tel. 0666/659392; [email protected]) specializes in the general wildlife (bird life in particular) of Morocco's mountains and desert regions, and is often contracted by various U.K.-based operators. Saïd Ahmoume is Naturally Morocco's resident wildlife guide, with a particular passion for botany and ornithology. He can be contacted through Naturally Morocco.

Some of the better English-language websites for birding in Morocco are Go-South (www.go-south.org), which also has an extensive archive of field reports; African Bird Club (www.africanbirdclub.org), a general information website; and Bird Links to the World (www.bsc-eoc.org/links), which, as the name suggests, is a dedicated site of links to other birding websites. Considered the most comprehensive English-language Moroccan ornithological field guide is the Collins Bird Guide (Collins, 1999) by Lars Svensson, Killian Mullarney, Dan Zetterstrom, and Peter J. Grant. Although it's subtitled "The Most Complete Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe," the book's 392 pages cover Morocco as well. For something that's easier to pack, I recommend A Birdwatchers' Guide to Morocco (Prion Ltd., 2003) by Patrick and Fédora Bergier. The easy-to-read layout includes directions and a map to access each location, though its one downfall is the lack of any pictures for identification. Moroccan NGO Groupe d'Ornithologie du Maroc conducts ornithological studies, issues publications, and generally works for bird life conservation in Morocco. In 2001 and after 6 years of research, they published Les Oiseaux du Maroc, a French-language coffee table-style guidebook that indexes the different species of birds in Morocco, describing them and their natural environment in detail, as well as their migratory patterns. The book received the Hassan II Prize, awarded by the Environment Ministry of Morocco. It's extremely hard to get hold of, but I located it on my last visit to Morocco in Agadir's Librairie Papetrie la Lecture Pour Tous, 11 Passage Aït Souss (tel. 0528/843427 ). Birding in Morocco (Gostours), by Dave Gosney, is a DVD covering a birding expedition by the author and is full of great footage of many of Morocco's birds.
