The Black Crowes Soar at Tour Kickoff: Set List, Photos, Video

The Black Crowes helped Aerosmith kick off their Peace Out farewell tour in high style on Saturday at Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center, performing a kick-ass opening set that left the crowd hungry for more.

You can see the full set list, new photos and fan-shot videos from the show below.

Fronting a powerful eight-person band featuring two backup singers, brothers Chris and Rich Robinson  — who buried the hatchet and launched a reunion tour in 2021 — dedicated two-thirds of the hourlong set to songs from their first two albums, 1990's Shake Your Money Maker and 1992's The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion .

The Black Crowes were packed onto an almost comically small portion of Aerosmith's enormous stage, but Chris had no problem connecting with the massive crowd, spending the entire night strutting, preening and showing off a voice that remains remarkably strong.

Rich shined on guitar throughout the night, particularly during a showstopping "Thorn in My Pride," which found the band taking an extended instrumental detour reminiscent of the Rolling Stones ' "Can't You Hear Me Knocking."

This wasn't the first time the Black Crowes and Aerosmith teamed up for a show in Philadelphia. As both bands reminded the crowd during their respective sets, they previously performed together at the now-demolished Spectrum on July 24, 1990 .

The Black Crowes will support Aerosmith for the remainder of the Peace Out tour, which is currently scheduled to conclude on Jan. 26 in Montreal. They'll also release a deluxe box set of  The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion , featuring unreleased studio recordings, rare B-sides and a 1993 live performance, on Dec. 1.

The Black Crowes (formed in 1989) is an American blues and Southern rock band that draws huge comparisons with the Rolling Stones and the Faces, hailing from Marietta, Georgia, U.S.

Originally formed under the moniker Mr. Crowe’s Garden in 1984, the earliest incarnation took influence from local act R.E.M, 1960’s psychedelia, and classic rock. Though the band had undergone many changes over its history, brother Chris and Rich Robinson have remained at the core on The Black Crowes sound. In 1989 following a successful demo the band signed with Def American, who issued The Black Crowes' debut album “Shake Your Money Maker” in 1990. The multi-platinum selling release was recorded with the band’s first lineup of vocalist Chris Robinson, guitarist Rich Robinson, bassist Johnny Colt, guitarist Jeff Cease, and drummer Steve Gorman. Though the album proved relatively popular as a whole, it was their Top 30 cover of the Otis Redding song “Hard to Handle”, followed by the singles “She Talks to Angels”, “Jealous Again” that really catapulted the band to mainstream consciousness. In support of the release the Black Crowes opened for ZZ Top and took part on the Monsters of Rock tour in the Soviet Union alongside Mötley Crüe and Queensrÿche.

The band’s sophomore album “The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion” arrived in 1992 marking the departure of guitarist Jeff Cease and the arrival of Marc Ford. The album topped the Billboard 200 upon release, aided by the singles “Remedy”, “Sting Me”, “Thorn in my Pride”, and “Hotel Illness”. To fill out The Black Crowes' sound they invited the keyboardist Eddie Harsch to join their ranks, and whom made his debut on the album “Amorica” in 1994. The album earned strong reviews from a number of reputable sources including Rolling Stone magazine and was supported by a national tour, including an opening slot for the Grateful Dead in 1995.

In 1996 The Black Crowes released the full-length “Three Snakes and One Charm”, which the band supported with a summer run on the 1997 Further Festival with Ratdog and Bruce Hornsby. Following the release guitarist Marc Ford was sacked from the group, bassist Johnny Colt left of his own accord, and the Crowes lineup dissolved itself. After a small hiatus, a reformed Black Crowes appeared in 1999 consisting of the Robinson brothers, bassist Sven Pipien, and guitarist Audley Freed. The new lineup released the studio album “By Your Side” in January 1999, the same year the band were joined by Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page for a pair of shows in New York and Los Angeles.

The full-length “Lions” followed in 2001 issued by Richard Branson's V2 label. Charting at No. 20 on the Bilboard 200, The Black Crowes toured alongside Oasis and Spacehog before embarking on their own headlining tour. With tensions running high within the group, the Black Crowes took a hiatus in January 2002, which saw Rich Robinson release a solo album entitled “Paper” in 2004. The group returned however in 2005 to play a show at San Francisco’s Fillmore, which found its way onto the live release “Freak ’N’ Roll… Into the Fog” in 2006. The compilation of previously unreleased albums entitled “The Lost Crowes” was issued in 2006, after which guitarist Luther Dickinson join the band’s ranks. The new guitarist directed the group in a more southern rock style, which was apparent on the 2008 album “Warpaint”. In 2009 The Black Crowes released their eighth studio album “Before the Frost/Until the Freeze”, followed by 2010’s “Croweology”, and the 2013 live album “Wiser for the Time”.

Live reviews

There are few bands left today that still exude an air of pure rock and roll, and nobody captures that essence better than The Black Crowes. Over the last three decades I have witnessed the Robinson brothers and company strut their stuff on stage, and every time am left with a satisfied feeling that I just witnessed a real, honest to goodness ROCK and ROLL concert at its highest form (and also with some undoubtedly sore feet from all the dancing!)

Lead singer Chris Robinson is one of the best rock and roll frontmen of all time. His wiry frame provides authenticity when emulating Mick Jagger's patented dance moves, but there is no shortage of originality in Robinson's performance. The Crowes vary their setlist every night, and be prepared to see plenty of improvisation both musically and lyrically. This makes it difficult to sing along a lot of times, but ensures a unique concert experience every single time. With incense burning and scarves dangling, the stage is set for a rock and roll love fest. The soulful backup singers provide the backdrop and the Hammond organ ever present stage-left brings a fullness to the atmosphere both literally and figuratively.

The Black Crowes have a big catalog to draw from, and you will surely hear some of their "hits" like "Hard To Handle" or "Remedy" during one of their shows, but you will also be treated to a couple extended jams, and often a choice cover song; the Rolling Stones' "Torn and Frayed" and The Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" are go-to's for the band. The more danceable moments are complimented excellently by the more tender, quieter moments you will find at their shows. With the lights dimmed and lighters flickering the sultry sounds of harmonica and slide guitar will melt your body into a state of rock and roll bliss; an incredible rock and roll contact high. At these moments I find myself closing my eyes and letting the music move me...What a trip!

These days The Crowes tend to play smaller venues then they did at the height of their popularity in the early 1990's, but maintain a fiercely loyal fan base and are known to frequent some really excellent rock and roll institutions. For example, in New England they almost always make stops at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom, the House of Blues in Boston, or the State Theatre in Portland, Maine. These venues add intimacy and ambiance to an already transcendent rock and roll experience. I recall a particularly raucous reunion performance in May 2005 at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom where the entire hardwood dance floor was bouncing up and down from everyone moving and grooving.

The Black Crowes are the living embodiment of rock and roll. To see them live is to become one with that rock and roll spirit and forget all the mundaneness of the "outside" world. It is clear when you see them that they are the torchbearer of the essence of rock and roll, handed directly to them from The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Allman Brothers, and The Band. As nostalgic as that may seem, there is nothing stale about their performance, and young and old alike will be dancing along. Do yourself a big favor and go see The Black Crowes in concert if you have never, and if you have before, go see them again. Let's help keep that rock and roll torch burning strong, and all be warmed by it's awesome glow. Don't forget your lighter!

Who knows how many shows they will do together in the future, but playing “the big songs” some beautiful ballads and the odd cover - worth seeing while you can

Aerosmith Announce ‘Peace Out’ Farewell Tour With Support From The Black Crowes

Aerosmith have just revealed an extensive North American farewell tour that will take the classic hard rock act through the rest of the year and into 2024. They teased it last week.  The Black Crowes will support them on the tour. General on-sale begins May 5. Longtime Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer , who's recently been absent from the band , won't be playing.

The announcement comes months after Aerosmith canceled the  final dates  of their multi-year " Deuces Are Wild " concert residency in Las Vegas due to Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler 's health. In a statement at the time, the performer was said to feel " unwell ."

Now, the band's getting back on the road…for the last time. See a video trailer below.

In a joint statement, Aerosmith shared, "It's not goodbye, it's PEACE OUT! Get ready and walk this way, you’re going to get the best show of our lives."

They added regarding Kramer, "While Joey remains a beloved founding member of Aerosmith, he has regrettably made the decision to sit out the currently scheduled touring dates to focus his full attention on his family and health. Joey's unmistakable and legendary presence behind the drum kit will be sorely missed."

"After really not doing much for eight months. … [My wife] Billie and I were just keeping our heads low," the guitarist said. "Now, it's like, 'OK, this is what I do.'"

Chris Robinson Says Black Crowes ‘Don’t Know S— About Music’

“Alright!” shouted a clearly excited Chris Robinson last week as the Black Crowes performed on stage in Chicago. “Friday night at the rock and roll show!”

Following last month’s release of their latest studio album Happiness Bastards , their ninth, the Crowes performed Friday night in Chicago at Aragon Ballroom about halfway through the U.S. leg of their current tour, a lengthy jaunt set to take them abroad next month ahead of fall and winter dates in support of Aerosmith’s rescheduled “Peace Out” North American farewell tour.

“When we saw we were coming back to the Aragon, we were very excited,” said Robinson late, noting the group’s first performance in the picturesque room in almost 25 years. “And we’re very excited to have Glyders opening for us. They’re from this town, check them out,” he continued, lauding the work of the Chicago-based, psychedelic garage rock trio (as a cardboard cutout of Chuck Berry looked on from the venue’s balcony).

Over the course of 35 minutes, Glyders offered up a rewarding, lo-fi opening set.

“Cheers, everyone!” said bassist Eliza Weber early. Singer/guitarist Joshua Condon and drummer Joe Seger would soon find a groove during standout tracks like “Geneva Strangemod” and “High Time,” both from their 2023 full-length debut Maria’s Hunt.

Since we were first introduced in 1990, the Crowes have tallied a pair of platinum albums and three gold records, with Happiness Bastards , the group’s first studio album of original material in nearly 15 years, a worthy addition to their unique brand of southern-fried rock and roll.

“There’s a little town about 90 miles south of Atlanta called Macon, Georgia,” Robinson explained Friday night in Chicago, spotlighting the group’s roots. “Little Richard is from Macon. And the Allman Brothers Band,” he began, just one day removed from the death of co-founding Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts. “But there’s another: the greatest soul singer of all time, Otis Redding,” he continued. “Well, we jumped on that song and it goes like this,” said Robinson, setting up a late take on one of the biggest Black Crowes hits in Redding’s “Hard to Handle.”

While recent tours celebrated their Shake Your Money Maker record, this one makes the case for the new project, with the Black Crowes performing six songs from it over the course of about 95 minutes on stage Friday in Chicago.

As they do on the album too, “Bedside Manners” and “Rats and Clowns,” two of Happiness Bastards ’ more rollicking moments, kicked things off Friday night.

Performing as an 8 piece group, drummer Cully Symington and keyboard player Erik Deutsch were set beside backing vocalists Mackenzie Adams and Lesley Grant atop a unique two-tiered stage built to resemble stacks upon stacks of vintage amplifiers and audio equipment.

Frontman Chris Robinson, who performed in front of a large mirror, was joined on stage by guitarists Rich Robinson and Nico Bereciartua as well as longtime bassist Sven Pipien. Festive lighting strung over, along and behind the stage flanked the group who performed under a massive “Happiness Bastards” banner hanging from the lighting rig over the stage.

“Good to see you all. Welcome to the ‘Happiness Bastards!’” said Chris early in Friday’s set. “We’ve got some new songs and we got some old ones - like this!” he said, shuffling left before pointing right at Rich on the slide guitar, ultimately bunnyhopping in reverse back to center stage as “Twice As Hard” rang out early in Chicago.

Robinson was in fine form Friday, a rejuvenated frontman shimmying about while delivering a still impressive lead vocal, with the new music cementing a once unthinkable rebirth for the Black Crowes, who’ve continually staked their claim as one of America’s best rock acts since reforming in 2019.

From 1996’s Three Snakes and One Charm , “Nebakanezer” was an early highlight in Chicago. The gnarly dual guitar riffwork of “Horsehead,” from 1999’s By Your Side followed, providing one of Friday’s more rewarding one-two punches.

While “Oh Josephine” slowed things down momentarily, “Thorn in my Pride” found the group beginning to roll, with Chris on harmonica as the Crowes delivered an all hands, Stones-like jam to close the cut.

“Everyone say hello to Rich Robinson,” said Chris, gesturing toward his younger brother. With a wave of his right hand, Rich greeted the rapturuous Chicago crowd, soon strumming in the familiar opening licks to “She talks to Angels” on acoustic guitar.

From the new record, “Flesh Wound” followed, quickly proving to be a late high spot. The saccharine-drenched affair was a blast in the live setting, conjuring up the power pop stylings of Cheap Trick as the Black Crowes soared forward in fun fashion.

The brothers Robinson leaned in close, singing into the same mic during “Jealous Again” before closing with “Remedy,” with Chris back on harp as the new “Kindred Friend” wrapped things up in the Windy City.

“What is a band, other than something you dream up?” asked Chris rhetorically on stage in Chicago. “This band started in our mom and dad’s house in the 80s,” he continued, noting the pair’s humble roots. “And that dream will continue on.”

The Black Crowes 2024

The Black Crowes Soar with Fresh Tracks and Deep Cuts

This version of the Black Crowes are returning to the straight-ahead, swaggering rock and blistering blues that put them on the map in the early 1990s.

It’s a Saturday night in uptown Oakland, and it’s raining in the Bay Area again on 13th April. But the rock ‘n’ roll crowd is gathering like birds of a feather because the Black Crowes are here to light a fire at the Fox Theater. Back on tour since brothers Chris and Rich Robinson buried the hatchet from a long-running feud in 2020, the band has recently released their first album of new material in 15 years with 2024’s Happiness Bastards .

Before the Frost… Until the Freeze (2009) was an ambitious and multi-dimensional gem of a double album that propelled the band through several years of solid touring until they broke up in 2014. However, one listening of the new album makes it clear that this version of the Black Crowes is going for a return to the straight-ahead sound of swaggering rock and blistering blues that put the band on the map in the early 1990s. Their live shows also had a jammy psychedelic component that stood out several years before the jam-rock scene really took off, leading fans to want to catch multiple shows on a tour. But the songs always came first.

“We knew that we wanted to make like a rock and roll record, a Saturday night record, up-tempo, big riffs. We’re very visceral. It has to feel a certain way for us,” singer Chris Robinson told CBS News regarding songwriting for the new album. Fans are therefore amped up about the return of the Black Crowes for a Saturday night fiesta here, at a relatively intimate venue compared to the larger sheds and festivals the band has been playing in recent years, like the Concord Pavilion on 2021’s summer tour.

black crowes tour 2023

The Black Crowes hit the town after playing the LA Greek Theater the previous night, where none other than Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood sat in for an encore on the Faces ’ “Stay With Me”. Certain critics and hipster pundits may like to take issue with how the Black Crowes’ current lineup doesn’t have as many former band members as they might want or how some business matters might not have been well handled in the past. But the reality is that the Robinson Brothers have always been the driving creative force behind the band. If this lineup works for them now to move forward, then let there be rock!

On that note, AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)” plays on the PA as the lights go down at 9:00 pm. It’s one of the greatest anthems ever about being in a band and transcending all the bullshit that can get in the way, so it feels like an appropriate tune to set the tone here. The Black Crowes hit the stage with a blast of energy as they rock out on “Bedside Manners” and “Rats and Clowns”, the first two songs from the new record.

The time-space continuum shifts by three decades with “Twice As Hard”, the first song from the band’s debut album plays. Many fans whip out their cell phones to video the moment, making it feel similar to when Guns N’ Roses play “Welcome to the Jungle”. Yet, while this is a questionable trend among concertgoers in the 2020s, it shows how much sentiment there is amongst the fanbase for this song. It’s a rock ‘n’ roll gem that conjures a more innocent era, particularly for the Gen-Xers who were in college when it came out. It sounds fabulous here with Rich Robinson’s slide guitar and the female backing singers, vintage Black Crowes all the way.

Chris speaks of playing a deep cut, and “Just Say You’re Sorry” hits the mark, both as an obscure B-side from 1996’s Three Snakes and One Charm sessions and as a fitting tune for the two brothers coming together again after having spent five years apart not talking. It’s a groovy, feel-good rocker with some infectious boogie-woogie piano from keyboardist Erik Deutsch. Longtime bassist Sven Pipien holds down the low end with style all night, while drummer Cully Symington and guitarist Nico Bereciartua are rock solid. But the focus is, of course, on the Robinson Brothers.

Chris says something about playing a song that generates some hope for positive outcomes in these dark times and it turns out to be long time fan favorite “My Morning Song”, from 1992’s Southern Harmony and Musical Companion . The Black Crowes’ stellar second album elevated their rising star at the time, as did the tour that showed this was a band that also liked to stretch out for some heady improvisation at times. The vibe is lit now as Chris sings of letting your heart and soul go, with the band conjuring that freewheeling feeling from the 1990s when the Black Crowes surged as a genuine force in the rock ‘n’ roll counterculture.

“Cross Your Fingers” is another winner from the new album, with some bluesy slide guitar from Rich over a more syncopated groove while Chris sings of elemental forces like lightning, rain, and thunder.  Likewise for “Follow the Moon”, an upbeat rocker that sounds fresh and retro all at once. “Wanting and Waiting” reveals further depth on Happiness Bastards , with killer riffs from Rich and some of Chris’ most accessible vocals as he sings out on that universal feeling of existential loneliness from waiting for an elusive lady of desire to get herself together.

black crowes tour 2023

There are more pleasantly surprising deep-cut gems as well with “Under a Mountain”, the opening track from Three Snakes and One Charm that felt like an instant classic when the album dropped but which oddly didn’t seem to last long in the repertoire. The shimmering intro sounds sensational as the band rocks with a fresh vibrancy on the dynamic tune. Then there’s “Kickin’ My Heart Around”, a scintillating rocker from 1998’s By Your Side album that also soon faded in the repertoire. After spending more than a year touring their debut album in its entirety for its 30th anniversary, it’s refreshing to see the Crowes dipping deeper into their vast repertoire here.

“Hard to Handle” brings the house down with the band’s patented cover of the Otis Redding classic that became a huge hit from their debut album, kicking the Saturday night dance party into high gear. The obligatory “She Talks to Angels” brings things down for a heartfelt breather, but the band soon gets back to rocking on the new “Flesh Wound” about a contentious breakup.

Then, it’s full-throttle rock down the stretch as the band tears it up on the incendiary “No Speak No Slave”, sends the audience into harmonious collective unity with the timeless grooving of “Jealous Again”, and delivers a hot “Remedy” to close the set with a full dose of signature musical medicine.

As with the previous night in Los Angeles, a special guest appears for the encore. This time, renowned guitarist Charlie Sexton joins the Black Crowes for a smoking take on Chuck Berry’s “Carol”. It’s vintage feel-good rock ‘n’ roll, and it sure sounds refreshing here in 2024.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
