star trek nausicaan ship

The Nausicaans are a humanoid species native to the planet Nausicaa.

Nausicaans are large aliens renowned for their lack of subtlety and surly, ill-tempered manner. In some ways physically similar to the Chalnoth , they are generally tall humanoids surpassing two meters in height, with great physical strength. Their faces are commonly ashen in color and are distinguished by a prominent bone structure with sharp tusks protruding at either side of their mouths. Some Nausicaans also have a line of four small horns that run vertically down the forehead, though this trait seems to have become less common by the 24th century.

According to Dr. Phlox, the Nausicaan adrenal gland gives off a fragrance not unlike the scent of some female Humans ' sweat after performing exercise.

The Nausicaan speaking voice is deep, with a distinct accent, though they are commonly the silent, brooding type.

Technology and culture

While little has been seen that would indicate any governmental or military organization in Nausicaan society, the 22nd century saw coordinated acts of piracy. Hunting parties of several warp-capable starships or raiders worked out of asteroid bases, and pirates were armed with energy weapons of identical design.

Over the next two centuries, however, most contact with Nausicaans were in the form of isolated run-ins with civilians who seemed to be independent operators, though using asteroids as settlements did not go out of practice.

Nausicaan culture appears to be firmly rooted in violence. Most Nausicaan games involve inflicting pain or injury, including one played by liquidator Brunt's bodyguards, which involved tossing darts at each other's chest.

During the 22nd century, the Nausicaans were well-known pirates, attacking freighters in various sectors for years. The ECS Horizon had a run-in once with some Nausicaan pirates.

In the year 2151, Star Fleet made official first contact with the Nausicaans when the Earth ship Enterprise NX-01 intervened in a conflict involving the ECS Fortunate and a force of Nausicaan pirates. In that point in their history, despite their renegade behavior, they were seen working in larger groups, like a military. Such organization in their society and space ventures, however, seems to have apparently dissolved in later years.

In the mid-2320s, Cadet Third-Class Jean-Luc Picard was assigned to training on Morikin VII where he had his first encounter with Nausicaans, who had an outpost on a nearby asteroid.

In 2371, a group of Nausicaans used an ultrasonic generator to break in and rob the Central Museum of Remmil VI by breaking down one of the walls.

The Nausicaans are infamous thugs, and are a common choice as bodyguards or hired muscle; FCA liquidator Brunt used two Nausicaans as bodyguards in 2372 when he investigated a labor union set up by employees of Quark. The Nausicaans severely beat Quark in an unsuccessful attempt to force Rom to shut down the union.

In 2374, Quark proposed using Nausicaans to break his brother out of his holding cell. For five bars of gold-pressed latinum, Quark could hire five Nausicaans, a fast ship and very few questions. Breaking Rom out of the holding cell would have been child's play compared to the things Nausicaans are used to doing. Later that year, Quark made 200 bars of gold-pressed latinum by selling Denevan crystals to a Nausicaan entrepreneur.

The Orion Syndicate has also been known to hire Nausicaans. Miles O'Brien was attacked by several of them on New Sydney in 2375.

"Fortunate Son," Season 1, Episode 10

The most prominent example of Nausicaans foraging for valuables occurred in Enterprise's “Fortunate Son.” While assessing the damage from a Nausicaan attack on the Earth freighter Fortunate, Ensign Mayweather mentioned that the aliens were known for striking ships in the sector and once targeted his parents' cargo vessel Horizon.

Star Trek: The Nausicaan Race, Explained

I n a universe with countless alien species, some of them will come across as the villain. Humans do some good and bad things, but aliens in science fiction can often be boiled down to a single trait. Some species are known for their technological innovations, others for their artistic endeavors, but a few will inevitably be known as fighters. The Nausicaans are one of 90s Star Trek 's favorite pirate races.

Perhaps more than any other franchise, Star Trek is a proponent of the Planet of Hats trope . Many early episodes depict a Starfleet crew landing on a new world or meeting a new species, only to learn that they're all defined by one trait. Some examples make more sense than others, but the idea of a species of muscle-bound brutes is almost as old as science fiction.

RELATED: Star Trek: The Andorian Race, Explained

What is the Nausicaan Race?

The Nausicaans first appeared in a 1993 Star Trek: The Next Generation episode . They're introduced in flashback by Captain Picard, who relives the day he lost his original heart at their hands. Nausicaans are very large and muscular. They tend to be well over 6 feet tall and very broad. Their faces are sickly gray, resembling dead flesh. Nausicaans' most prominent trait is their bone structure. Most have sharp protrusions surrounding their mouth, four small horns on their forehead, and an hourglass-like set of ridges down their skull. Visual comparisons to Klingons are common and fair. They're a classic example of Star Trek 's Rubber-Forehead alien design philosophy . The comparisons don't stop at the look. Their fearsome appearance reveals their capacity for violence.

Nausicaans are well-known as pirates. They frequently attack large cargo vessels to plunder their valuable resources. Very little is known about their home planet, Nausicaa, other than that it's a chaotic place in constant transition. Its government isn't fixed, and it seems to lack any form of law enforcement. Nausicaans also take on legal jobs. They are frequently hired as mercenaries and bodyguards. Any wealthy person in the galaxy knows they can acquire a small team of Nausicaans and a fast ship to get any job done at a reasonable price. They've been used as security, muscle, strikebreakers, and even a heist crew by various factions in the universe. Though brutish and violent , Nausicaans can generally be counted upon to complete any dangerous task. On the other hand, Nausicaan prisoners would face no punishment on their home planet. Everyone knows what they're dealing with when they meet a Nausicaan. Several stories serve as evidence of their impressive reputation.

How Have the Nausicaans Interacted With Starfleet?

As previously mentioned, the Nauiscaans' most famous action in the franchise is stabbing Captain Picard through the heart. Picard was a cocky recent graduate of Starfleet Academy. He got involved in a bar fight after a trio of Nausicaans cheated his friend in a game. During the brawl, one of the Nausicaans impaled Picard through his chest from behind. The wound nearly killed him. He had an artificial heart for the rest of his life. The episode that depicted this conflict, "Tapestry," also demonstrated the wound's effect on his destiny. Picard learned that the version of himself who never stood up for his friends would never have become a Captain. By the end of the episode, Picard chooses to lose his heart to gain back his spine. He's depicted being stabbed with a smile on his face.

The first Starfleet encounter with the Nausicaans came in 2151, when a group of Nausicaan pirates attacked the ironically-named cargo vessel ECS Fortunate. The plot gradually reveals that the Fortunate is holding a Nausicaan as a hostage, granting some justification to the pirates. Nausicaans once robbed the central museum on Remmil VI. Ferengi entrepreneur Quark frequently dealt with Nausicaans. He repeatedly proposed hiring them to break his brother out of a cell on Deep Space 9. Quark later traded precious resources with a Nausicaan. They were also used against Quark when his employees formed a labor union. The criminal Orion Syndicate frequently hired Nausicaans as muscle, once attacking Miles O'Brien in New Sydney. Nausicaan diplomats boarded the Voyager to discuss mining rights for a planet rich with dilithium crystals. An episode of Lower Decks depicted them being cheated in the same game they played with Picard, leading to another fight.

The Nausicaans are a simple race of mercenaries, pirates, and warriors. They don't have a lot of complexity. They just do what they get paid to do. A future Star Trek series could explore the finer details of their lawless society or lust for power, but they really don't need extra details. They show up, threaten, maim, kill, and collect whatever they came for. Star Trek has a lot of unique and interesting science fiction races , but not every species needs a textbook of lore or a complex governmental structure. Sometimes all they need is a good design and a few well-placed acts of violence.

History and specifics [ ]

The Nausicaans have a reputation as thugs, pirates, and hired muscle. These tall, muscled brutes take what they like and have few qualms about who they work for...so long as said employer is willing, and able, to pay up. Nausicaans enjoy drinking and gambling in their spare time; they are notorious dom-jot hustlers, and usually think nothing of cheating. ( TNG episodes : " Samaritan Snare ", " Tapestry ")

History [ ]

In 2058 , Naussican raiders boarded the lost Vanguard colony. The inhabitants attempted to greet them peacefully, but to no avail. Over 200 colony residents were killed before the Nausicaans were driven off. The colonists referred to them as "tuskers". ( TLE novel : The Sundered )

Nausicaans often pirated smaller ships, attacking and stealing their supplies. ( ENT episode : " Fortunate Son ")

In 2152 , while time traveling , Doctor Phlox saw a possible future in which Enterprise was attacked by Nausicaan pirates. ( ENT short story : " Cabin E-14 ")

Kajek was a Nausicaan Bounty hunter that was in the employment of the Orion Merchant-Prince Ganz . Kajek performed several missions for Ganz in the late 23rd century . ( VAN - Declassified novella : The Stars Look Down )

In the 2370s , Nausicaans were hired as bodyguards and enforcers, such as by Brunt of the Ferengi Commerce Authority or by the Orion Syndicate . ( DS9 episodes : " Bar Association ", " Prodigal Daughter ")

In 2376 Nausicaan rogue agents attacked Starbase 92 . ( SCE eBook : Past Life )

Iliana Ghemor used Nausicaans in 2376 and 2377 . One served her aboard a Besinian freighter , while Savonigar was hired to kill the mirror universe Ghemor . ( DS9 novels : Bajor: Fragments and Omens , Warpath )

During the Borg Invasion of 2381 Nausicaa was attacked by the Borg and left uninhabitable. The survivors of the attack resorted to piracy to survive before Commander Worf of the USS Enterprise was able to use his influence with Chancellor Martok to provide them with the planet Kremlat as a new homeworld. While nominally a Klingon world, Kremlat's hostile climate meant the Klingons were never able to settle or exploit Kremlat's resources, but the Nausicaans were well suited to their new homeworld. ( TNG novel : Collateral Damage )

Culture [ ]

The Nausicaans are an anarchial society organize mostly into families, with the strongest Nausicaans bullying and dominating the weaker ones, with the weak doing all the work for the former. Survival is the greatest virtue in Nausicaan society, as they believe that the strong survive and prosper by their strength while the weak survive by doing what they’re told due to their world being home to some massive creatures. After becoming old enough to survive on their own, Nausicaans work for the family.

Interactions with others mostly involve friendly greetings and one-upmanship, which can turn into shouting claims of mighty deeds and adventures—either real or fictious—to highlight the honor of their own families and themselves. Fighting is common, for Nausicaans but serious injury is not.

Nausicaans are usually employed as brute force labor because they treat other races the same way they treat each other. Their civilization has risen to the level of Federation Standard technology, save for weapons and high warp technology for their ships as no galactic power see any benefits in providing such dangerous technology to a violent and lying race. The species is mostly seen employed as labor and given their history and pride in high piracy, many Nausicaans who leave their world the Orion Syndicate or other unsavory organizations or ships.

In terms of cheating, Nausicaans is only considered bad if someone is caught at it—and then, if the cheater is strong enough to defend his honor, the cheater is lionized. ( Decipher RPG module : Worlds )

The Nausicaans believe in gods known as the Four Winds who inhabit the Heart of the Sky . ( DS9 novel : Warpath )

Nausicaan tusk opera is a form of music created by the Nausicaans, and is very popular amongst other species - even species they don't have a good relationship with. ( SCE eBook : Enigma Ship )

Club stats [ ]

Length: 40-60 centimeters Mass: 0.5-1.5 kilograms

Warstaff [ ]

A Nausicaan fashions a warstaff by cannibalizing parts from phasers (or disruptors) and fastening them to a staff. The power-cell is rigged along the length of the pole; the prefire-chamber and emitter-crystal are fixed to one end. A variety of blades protruding from both ends round out construction. A warstaff can be used as a club, a spear, a scythe, or an energy weapon; it also looks particularly menacing. Its stats are as follows: Length: 2 meters Mass: 5 kilograms Energy: 160-1,500 charges

Description : The Nausicaans were a humanoid species. Their homeworld, Nausicaa, was located in the Alpha Quadrant. (VOY: "Q2")

Nausicaans were large aliens renowned for having a lack of subtlety and a surly, ill-tempered manner. They were generally tall humanoids surpassing two meters in height, with great physical strength. Their faces were commonly ashen in color and were distinguished by a prominent bone structure with sharp tusks protruding at either side of their mouths. Some Nausicaans also had a line of four small horns that ran vertically down the forehead, though this trait seemed to have become less common by the 24th century. (TNG: "Tapestry"; ENT: "Fortunate Son", "Canamar", et al.) In some ways, Nausicaans were physically similar to the Chalnoth and the Kradin. (TNG: "Tapestry", "Allegiance"; VOY: "Nemesis")

According to Dr. Phlox, the Nausicaan adrenal gland gave off a fragrance not unlike the scent of some female Humans' sweat after performing exercise. (ENT: "Fight or Flight")

The Nausicaan speaking voice was deep, with a distinct accent. However, they were commonly the silent, brooding type.

During the 22nd century, the Nausicaans were well-known pirates, attacking freighters in various sectors for years. The ECS Horizon had a run-in once with some Nausicaan pirates.

In the year 2151, Earth Starfleet made first official contact with the Nausicaans when the Earth ship Enterprise intervened in a conflict involving the ECS Fortunate and a force of Nausicaan pirates. In that point in their history, despite their renegade behavior, they were seen working in larger groups, like a military. (ENT: "Fortunate Son") Such organization in their society and space ventures, however, seems to have apparently dissolved in later years.

In the mid-2320s, Cadet Third-Class Jean-Luc Picard was assigned to training on Morikin VII where he had his first encounter with Nausicaans, who had an outpost on a nearby asteroid. (TNG: "Tapestry")

In 2327, the newly-graduated Picard and two of his friends, Cortan Zweller and Marta Batanides, became involved in a fight at the Bonestell Recreation Facility on Starbase Earhart after a trio of Nausicaans cheated during a game of dom-jot. During a melee, one of the Nausicaans stabbed Picard through the heart, severely injuring him and necessitating the implanting of an artificial heart. (TNG: "Samaritan Snare", "Tapestry")

In 2371, a group of Nausicaans used an ultrasonic generator to break in and rob the Central Museum of Remmil VI by breaking down one of the walls. (DS9: "Heart of Stone")

A Nausicaan was seen in a bar on Dessica II while the senior staff of the USS Enterprise-D was searching for clues about the whereabouts of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in that establishment. (TNG: "Gambit, Part I")

The Nausicaans were infamous thugs, and were a common choice as bodyguards or hired muscle – FCA liquidator Brunt used two Nausicaans as bodyguards in 2372 when he investigated a labor union set up by employees of Quark. The Nausicaans severely beat Quark in an unsuccessful attempt to force Rom to shut down the union. (DS9: "Bar Association")

(DS9: "Favor the Bold") Later that year, Quark made 200 bars of gold-pressed latinum by selling Denevan crystals to a Nausicaan entrepreneur. (DS9: "The Sound of Her Voice")

The Orion Syndicate was also known to hire Nausicaans. Miles O'Brien was attacked by several of them on New Sydney in 2375. (DS9: "Prodigal Daughter")

A Nausicaan representative was part of the holographic diplomacy scenario 12-alpha aboard the USS Voyager in which Q Junior was to act as a mediator. Here, amongst other species, Nausicaans and Bolians were fighting over the mining rights to a dilithium-rich planetoid. The holographic Nausicaan, notable for his green skin, claimed that the planetoid was within Nausicaan space and warned that they would attack anyone who came near it. (VOY: "Q2")

Technology and culture

While little has been seen that would indicate any governmental or military organization in Nausicaan society, the 22nd century saw coordinated acts of piracy. Hunting parties of several warp-capable raider starships armed with plasma cannons and protected by deflector shields, worked out of Nausicaan cargo stations. The pirate crews were armed with hand-held directed energy weapons. (ENT: "Fortunate Son")

Nausicaan culture appeared to be firmly rooted in violence. Most Nausicaan games involved inflicting pain or injury, including one played by liquidator Brunt's bodyguards, which involved tossing darts at each other's chest. (DS9: "Bar Association")
