Brazilian Luxury Travel Association Shares Latest Trends in Luxury Travel to Brazil

brazil luxury travel association

Luxury tourism from the UK to Brazil has never been hotter, and with the news just announced that Virgin Atlantic will launch daily flights on their Dreamliner fleet between London Heathrow and São Paulo in 2020, the spotlight is back on the destination.  The first and only association dedicated entirely to Brazilian luxury travel, Brazilian Luxury Travel Association (BLTA) is a collaboration of 38 of the country’s finest hotels, resorts, lodges and tour operators and as such, has its finger firmly on the pulse of the latest trends in luxury travel to Brazil.  Ahead of an international roadshow of 20 BLTA partners beginning in London on 11 April 2019, BLTA president, Martin Frankenberg, shares his tips to what’s new in luxury to Brazil.

INTERNATIONAL LUXURY HOTEL BRANDS EXPANDING INTO BRAZIL

Many of the globe’s most iconic luxury hotel brands are expanding their operations with new properties in Brazil.  Within the last two years, both Oetker Collection and Four Seasons have opened hotels in São Paulo, and Fairmont will open a property in Rio de Janeiro in the coming months.  Elsewhere, Anantara will debut its first hotel in South America later this year on the Atlantic coast on the Maraú Peninsula in Bahia.  Six Senses has also announced plans to open its first hotel in South America in the state of Alagoas in 2021.  Frankenberg anticipates that all these properties will join BLTA as the come online.

STRONG GROWTH IN BRAZILIAN LUXURY HOTEL BRANDS

Fasano Hotels, long regarded as Brazil’s main luxury hotel group, has opened three new hotels in the last year in Angra dos Reis, Belo Horizonte and Salvador, with a fourth scheduled to open in Trancoso during 2019.  Emiliano also has expansion plans.

INBOUND LUXURY TRAVEL TRENDS

Many BLTA member hotels have noted that they are receiving many more clients from all over the world looking for celebration travel, from couples looking for memorable honeymoons to tribes of friends or family celebrating a landmark birthday or anniversary.  In terms of popular destinations within Brazil, the beaches and Rio de Janeiro have long been on the wish list of international travellers, but BLTA members are seeing a rise in demand for nature destinations, with the Pantanal and Amazon regions, being in higher demand at the moment.

SUSTAINABILITY AS THE NEW LUXURY

In 2018, BLTA launched its first Sustainability Award, aimed at encouraging its members to adopt sustainable practices and share information; created the Sustainability Fund; adopted a conservation area; and funded conservation initiatives that support responsible tourism in the Alcatrazes Archipelago. “Sustainability is the new luxury and in Brazil we are treading a path we hope will seamlessly integrate trends in global tourism, where, rather than consuming products, travellers wish to participate in transformative experiences that sharpen their senses and connect them in a simpler and more direct way to local culture and environment,” said CEO of BLTA, Simone Scorsato.

The UK is one of BLTA’s primary source markets and the Association will be bringing a group of members to London on 11 April 2019 for a day of business conferences and workshops with key trade players at the Embassy of Brazil in order to further develop the high-end travel sector in Brazil.

“Bringing together at one event the best of Brazilian luxury hospitality, including some competitors, shows that the travel industry believes and invests in the power of teamwork to promote Brazil.  We compensate for the small investment made in promoting Brazil abroad with focussed efforts targeted at a niche market to attract key buyers in our major source markets for luxury travel to Brazil,” commented Martin Frankenberg.  CEO of BLTA, Simone Scorsato, added, “We have always strived to strengthen Brazil’s positive image abroad, and this is only possible through the engagement and joint effort of BLTA member entrepreneurs, and supporters such as TAP Air Portugal.”

A success story of promotion of Brazil abroad, BLTA has held roadshows in Europe since its launch in 2014, coming to London in 2015 and 2016, and to Paris in 2014-16.  The success of these meetings is demonstrated by the fact that 20% of luxury visitors to Brazil come from Europe – Brazil’s second largest market by number of guests.

“Our mission is to strengthen luxury travel to Brazil through experience excellence aligned with the values of the global luxury travel industry and to genuinely and creatively promote the image of a contemporary and sustainable country abroad, while reflecting Brazil’s hospitable and creative DNA in everything we do,” said Simone Scorsato.  “This translates to unique tours that reveal a country ready to welcome discerning travellers from around the world.  We believe that by 2020, Brazil will be in a leading position in the luxury travel sector in Latin America.”

Luxury Latin America Blog

Luxury travel news and reviews for mexico, central america, and south america, best places to visit in brazil: 7 top destinations for luxury travelers.

Brazil is a country that bursts with vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and an array of breathtaking destinations. It’s also a country where the local people put fun first, which you can see on display with Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival or at the many laid-back beach resort areas on the long coastline. It’s not easy to decide where to go in such a large country, so we’ve highlighted seven of the best places to visit in Brazil.

places to visit in Brazil - Rio

You can narrow it down from here depending on your interests. If you’re up for adventure, you’ve got Iguacu Falls, the Amazon River and rainforest, and the Pantanal wildlife area. If you like cities, head to the largest city of Sao Paulo, to Rio, or to Salvador. If you’re an island lover, see the last option at the bottom.

With a country this vast and varied, it makes sense to partner up with a tour company, especially if it’s your first time visiting. For vacations and Brazil holidays , it’s going to save a huge amount of time if you let someone else take care of the plans and logistics. A Brazil expert can easily set up all the transportation and make sure you hit the highlights of wherever you’re going.

Brazil has long been a laggard when it comes to luxury lodging options though, with “barefoot chic” being the norm on the coasts and most upscale hotels catering to business travelers more than vacationers. As the dollar and euro have gained on the Brazilian real in recent years, however, the value proposition has increased quite a bit and it’s easier for wealthy travelers to go for the best of the best in lodging without seeing insanely high prices that were prevalent a decade ago.

Every destination in Brazil tells a story, unfolds history, and offers experiences that stay with you long after you leave. The main challenge is figuring out what to prioritize in the itinerary in what is the largest country by far in South America. This land mass occupies half of the whole continent. It’s larger than the size of the lower 48 states in the USA but has about a third fewer people.

We’ve narrowed down the options for you according to where you’ll find the best tours, the best places to stay, and the highest level of service. So, pack your bags, embrace the warmth of the Brazilian spirit, and prepare to discover some of the most memorable places on the planet. These destinations are poised to make your trip to Brazil unforgettable.

Rio de Janeiro

Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro Brazil

Rio de Janeiro presents a vibrant tapestry of cultural richness, blending historical architecture with urban energy and beaches that have inspired songs and paintings since the first visitors arrived. There’s enough to easily keep you occupied for a week here, from exploring Sugarloaf Mountain and the Christ the Redeemer statue to riding a streetcar through the Santa Teresa neighborhood and lazing on the beach.

This is a great city for dining and drinking, of course, with a festive atmosphere that’s contagious. There are only a few luxury Rio hotels that are up to our standards, but you can see full reviews of them at that link and most are facing the famous Copacabana Beach.

I enjoyed the laid-back attitude that abounds in Rio, with guys strolling down the beach selling Caipirinha cocktails and the ability to get a cold beer almost anywhere. There are a lot of casual places to grab a bite and even the fancy places aren’t overly pretentious.

Hotel Unique Sao Paulo

While São paulo is known more as the pulsing business headquarters of the country than a tourist center, its status as host of the country’s busiest airport means that a lot of international flights arrive here from cities in the USA, Canada, and Europe. So it makes sense to stick around a little while after arrival before heading out to other parts of Brazil.

This is the main culinary destination of the country, home to most of the restaurants from Brazil that turn up on lists of the best places to dine in South America. Those getting a nod from the judges include A Casa do Porco, Oteque, D.O.M, Maní, and Mocotó.

As for attractions, you can visit one of South America’s top art museums, head to the top of the 161-meter Farol Santander skyscraper for panoramic views, or get a grip on Brazil’s history at the Museu Afro-Brasil . If you’re a big soccer fan, visit the Museu do Futebol.

This is a good place to take some kind of city tour with a guide, though try to avoid the peak traffic times or you’ll spend much of it in your vehicle. This city is blessed with some of the best places to stay in the country. See our reviews of luxury Sao Paulo hotels .

Salvador de Bahia

Fera Palace Hotel Salvador Bahia

Nestled in the state of Bahia, Salvador captivates with its historic charm and deeply rooted Afro-Brazilian culture. It is one of the longest-established colonial cities in the Americas, dating back to the 1500s. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site nearly four decades ago.

The neighborhood of Pelourinho is at the heart of this port city, featuring cobblestone streets lined with colorful colonial buildings, churches, and museums. A stroll here immerses you in the city’s storied past, and the palpable rhythm of Bahian music and dance enlivens your spirit.

This is the third-largest city in Brazil, however, so you will have plenty of options for shopping, dining, and drinking when you’re ready to spend some of your vacation money. This is actually Brazil’s second most popular city for tourists after Rio, thanks to 50 miles of beaches spreading out in both directions along the coast.

Iguaçu Falls

Iguacu Falls from the Brazilian side - by Luxury Latin America

Sometimes spelled as Iguazu Falls or Iguassu Falls, the cascades here are unrivaled anywhere else in the Americas. Stunning already from the Argentine side, the view from the Brazilian side is even better, with the thundering falls right up close to you and a rainbow suspended in the air on sunny days.

The falls get most of the attention, but there’s plenty to do in the area also in terms of hikes, birdwatching trips, and boat rides. Stay at one of the top Iguacu Falls luxury hotels on the Brazilian side and spend some time soaking it all in.

Want to get an advance look at the scenery? Watch the classic 1986 historical movie The Mission starring Jeremy Irons, Robert De Niro, and Liam Neeson.

Amazon Rainforest Exploration

Brazil Amazon vacation

The Amazon Rainforest is a realm of biodiversity that is unrivaled on the planet. Often called the Earth’s lungs, this ecosystem is host to a wide variety of wildlife. Home to countless species of flora and fauna, it’s a must-visit for nature lovers.

You have several options for exploring this area, whether based in a jungle lodge like Anavilhanas or cruising down the Amazon River on a ship that visits different areas. A good guide will make all the difference, with the best of them being locals who grew up in the rainforest and are intimately familiar with all the medicinal plants and what lives in various parts of the jungle.

You’ll probably fly in and out of Manaus and it’s worth spending a little time there as well. It’s a surprisingly large metropolis, with more than two million people.

Pantanal Wildlife Safari

Cristalino Amazon rainforest lodge

The Pantanal is the largest tropical wetland in South America and a treasure trove of wildlife. You’re likely to encounter everything from capybaras to jaguars in this rich ecosystem. You can see macaws and toucans in the air and much more on the ground. Here’s how tk describes it in their Brazil wildlife tours section:

About 250 species of fish, 80 of mammals, 50 of reptiles and over 650 of birds live together harmoniously. Explore the riparian forest and mangroves spotting Otters, have a go at piranha fishing, learn about the fauna on horseback and try a night safari to spot nocturnal animals.

If you’re coming all this way, you might as well do it right and stay at the best nature lodge in the region. See our review of Cristalino Lodge .

Coastal Paradise in Fernando de Noronha

Pousada Maravilha

Locals speak in awe about Fernando de Noronha, an idyllic archipelago with white sand beaches and crystal-clear water. It’s a rather remote place to visit, 220 miles from the mainland, which is part of its charm. It is known for excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. See our travel story on Fernando de Noronha here .

The top place to stay in the area is Pousada Maravilha , with one of its views pictured above. Follow that link to read a full review.

This is just a small sampling of places to visit in Brazil. This is a vast country and we haven’t even touched on the beautiful beach areas in the north such as Florianopolis, Fortaleza, and Ceara, some with massive sand dunes you can hike on. These draw travelers from around the world, especially those who are spending weeks or months in the country instead of just coming on a short vacation.

Which places did you like the most when you visited Brazil? Let us know in the comments!

Hotel das Cataratas: Haven Besides the Falls

Aerial view of Belmond Hotel das Cataratas among jungles by the Iguassu Falls

At Hotel das Cataratas, step into nature’s wonders and explore freely the park of Iguassu, from day to night.

At Hotel das Cataratas, A Belmond Hotel, you’ll have unrivalled access to the breathtaking Iguassu Falls and its surrounding parkland. Whilst all other visitors must adhere to the strict 9-5 opening hours, our location inside the park gives our guests up to six additional hours of freedom to explore.

The benefit of this cannot be understated: secluded trails have a heavenly feel, while each unobstructed view demands a photograph. Alone in Iguassu, you’re in nature’s thrall. Taking in the dramatic falls in the rosy dawn light is both spectacular and humbling. Listen to the roar of the water as you feast your eyes on magnificent vistas in near solitude.

Yet anyone who’s visited Belmond Hotel das Cataratas will know that there’s more to this charming hotel than its stunning location. There are no other buildings for miles around. You’ll spot our colonial tower protruding through the trees. Let it guide you through the dense jungle towards our welcoming pink facade.

Step through our doors into a world of understated luxury. Floors are made of rich dark wood and bathrooms finished in white marble. Beds are dressed in crisp Egyptian cotton and cosmetics brought from Brazil’s oldest apothecary.

Dramatic shot of Iguassu Falls as white water thunders over the rocky brink and clouds of mist and spray dance in the air.

This is a place to while away days. Soak up sounds of the jungle as you float in our infinity pool, or stroll through gardens bejeweled by orchids and bromeliads. Feeling indulgent? Head to our spa for a rainforest scrub like no other. Ingredients are sourced in the surrounding jungle; our treatments draw on the delights of the Amazon.

As the sun goes down, enjoy views from the terrace sipping a cool caipirinha. Feeling adventurous? Don’t leave without trying mixologist Nacir’s special ‘Devil’s Throat’ cocktail. Named after the horseshoe waterfall, it’s perfection in a glass.

Speaking of Nacir, it’s the staff that truly make this place so special. He runs impromptu classes giving guests the lowdown on how to mix the perfect drink. Our guide Edso offers bio-tours of the park’s fauna where you may be lucky enough to see toucans, turtles and anything between. Chef Luiz, who tends the grill at Ipê, is a gaucho chef like no other. Watch him work and pick up some tips, before savouring delights straight from his Brazilian barbecue.

Take advantage of opportunities to swim, snorkel and paddleboard in crystal-clear waters around the yacht. Or join a group to fish just off the bow.

Set off on a Zodiac tour to discover the pristine paradise of Polyaigos with no permanent residents—other than the native flora and fauna. Swim and snorkel around the secluded beaches, reveling in the exclusive experiences in this private maritime sanctuary.

This evening gather for another convivial dining experience in the restaurant. Overnight: Le Ponant (B,L,D)

Day 5: Serifos Tuesday, June 24, 2025 The enchanting island of Serifos unfolds like a dream, with its postcard-perfect landscapes of whitewashed buildings and cobalt-blue accents set against hills of dry vegetation. Visit the Monastery of Taxiarches, which served as a place of worship and spiritual retreat for centuries since being founded around the 1600s. Dedicated to the island's patron saints—the Archangels Michael and Gabriel—the interior of the monastery is adorned with intricate frescoes and ornate icons that illustrate tales of faith and devotion.

Continue to the well-preserved remains of a white marble tower dating back to the 4th century BC. Most likely used as a watchtower or guard post, the expansive views from the top are magnificent.

Next visit Mega Livadi, one of the main loading sites for the island's mining industry, to learn about Serifos' mining history which concluded in 1963. Stroll along the beach and nearby bridge where traces of minerals can still be discovered. Stop for lunch at a local taverna before returning to the yacht.

Back on board, enjoy a relaxing dip in the saltwater swimming pool or schedule a wellness treatment in the spa (additional fees apply) . Overnight: Le Ponant (B,L,D)

Day 6: Monemvasia (Peloponnese) Wednesday, June 25, 2025 Our next destination is the uniquely preserved medieval village of Monemvasia of the southern Peloponnese, a living testament to Byzantine and Venetian influence. Split into lower town and upper town, its stone mansions, idyllic streets and Byzantine churches are some of the many reasons why this island is referred to as the "Gibraltar of the East."

Carved entirely on the backside of a massive rock, Monemvasia was strategically positioned so locals could avoid enemy attacks. The town’s singular entrance point served as a defensive design, providing protection against invasions and ensuring the safety of its inhabitants during medieval times.

Board a motor coach, entering town via the sole city gate to explore the lower town during a guided walking tour. Traverse cobbled streets, discover notable gems around the square of Elkomenos and ascend to the upper town for endless panoramic views.

Later take a short drive by motor coach to an olive oil estate in Liotrivi. The property was once owned by the Greek poet Yiannis Ritsos and served as his annual summer retreat. Join a guide to tour the olive press museum and wine cellar followed by a tasting featuring locally made olive oil, wine, oregano and feta.

The remainder of the afternoon, embrace leisure time on the yacht. Refresh on the sun deck with a cold beverage or mingle with fellow travel companions in the Bar Emeraude. Overnight: Le Ponant (B,L,D)

Day 7: Kythnos Thursday, June 26, 2025 After breakfast on board, disembark in Kythnos, an arid and rocky island covered in thick evergreen underbrush. The island’s nutrient-dense soil provides an ideal environment for olive groves, and fig and almond trees. Bask in the tranquility of Loutra, known for its thermal springs, or explore the charming main town of Chora. Be tempted to nap beneath an umbrella on the beach, or swim, paddleboard or kayak before returning to the yacht in the early evening. Overnight: Le Ponant (B,L,D)

Day 8: Spetses Friday, June 27, 2025 Arriving early morning in Spetses, step onto an island of aristocratic elegance and maritime history, where horse-drawn carriages and bicycles replace motorized vehicles. Beautiful boutiques, cosmopolitan restaurants and neoclassical mansions are surrounded by fragrant pine forests with inviting walking trails.

Climb aboard a carriage for a relaxing journey to the historic mansion-turned-museum of Laskarina Bouboulina, a heroine of the Greek War of Independence. Born to a family of wealthy shipowners and traders, Laskarina proved herself a shrewd businesswoman and skilled sailor before the age of 20. When the war erupted in 1821, she used her wealth to finance the construction of ships and personally commanded her own fleet in battle against the Ottoman forces. Laskarina's most notable contribution came in 1825 when she led the successfully blockaded a siege of the fortress of Monemvasia, a strategic victory that earned her widespread acclaim and admiration.

The museum offers a glimpse into Laskarina's extraordinary life and achievements, showcasing a collection of personal belongings, artifacts and memorabilia belonging to her and her family. Explore the various rooms where Bouboulina lived and worked, and peruse exhibits of weapons, documents and historical artifacts related to her military campaigns.

Return to town for refreshments at a café followed by free time to stroll the promenade and pier.

Bicycles and e-bikes will also be available all day for independent exploration of Spetses.

Your final evening on board, join together for a lively farewell reception and spectacular gala dinner. Reflect upon the enriching experiences of the past week and the indelible memories forged during this romantic odyssey discovering the Greek Isles. Overnight: Le Ponant (B,L,R,D)

Day 9: Lavrio – Disembarkation | Athens | Depart for U.S. Saturday, June 28, 2025 After breakfast on the yacht, disembark to connect with the complimentary transfer to the airport for flights home. (B)

Smart Vacation Deals Ahead

Here's how you can enjoy a luxury trip or upgrade the one you've got planned without breaking the bank

Luxury travel to places as diverse as the Antarctic coast (top), the beaches of Brazil (above left), and vineyards in Bordeaux (above right) can be budget-friendlier than you think.

By Jesse Will

With the world well past the pandemic’s peak, Americans are showing a strong thirst for travel in 2023. Almost a quarter of us plan to travel more for leisure this year than last, according to a U.S. Travel Association study. Vacation rental bookings are up. Flights are full. Itineraries are ambitious.

“Travel is back, full force,” says Mary Cropper, a travel adviser in Boston. “People are coming out of the woodwork after the pandemic, really investing a lot of time and energy to curate the perfect trip.”

And because demand is up, leisure travel prices continue to stay high. Airline tickets may come in slightly cheaper than in 2022—a ticket costing $400 last summer might hit around $350 this year, according to the travel booking site Hopper —but that’s still higher than pre-pandemic rates. And inflation has jacked up costs for everything from hotels to rental cars to restaurants.

But with some foresight, research, and perhaps the help of a good travel adviser, it’s still possible to arrange the big trip you’ve been dreaming about without having to start selling off your furniture. Here’s how.

New Places to Go

Find Where Your Dollar Goes Further

It’s easy to max out your travel budget when the destination is a perennially pricey locale like Maui or New York City. But with the dollar staying strong during the global economic downturn, this might be the year to make the most of a favorable exchange rate. At press time, the dollar was still performing at relative highs against the euro, Japanese yen, and Chinese yuan, aka renminbi. In 2014 the British pound was worth about $1.70; now it’s worth about $1.20. The Argentine peso, Costa Rican colón, and Brazilian real are all at a discount of late, too. So a fab five-star retreat at any of one of these destinations might now be within reach.

Identify Emerging Destinations

Balking at the cost of a given trip, whether it’s a beach all-inclusive or a more complex itinerary? Consider another sweet spot in the same vicinity. Keith Waldon, a travel adviser in Austin, Texas, suggests talking to a destination specialist who’s an authority on an area. “Maybe you’re interested in the Amalfi Coast but don’t want to pay the high-season rates,” he says. “A destination specialist might steer you toward the more affordable Tuscan coast, where there are gorgeous towns to explore and where you can hop on the train to Florence for a day trip.”

Make the Most of Shoulder Season If you aren’t at the mercy of a school schedule and don’t need to travel when everyone else is—in July and early August, for example—you can stretch your budget by traveling at off-peak times, when hotel prices can be as much as 50 percent lower. Along with gentler prices, you might find the weather almost as good or better. But because shoulder seasons aren’t at the same time everywhere, hit the internet or ask a travel adviser familiar with the area about specialized seasonal intel. You’ll find fewer crowds and better deals visiting Hawaii in mid-April or May; Hilton Head Island, S.C., in September; the Grand Canyon in October; and Mexico City in March. At Caribbean resorts, the June to November hurricane season can present significant discounts, but purchase trip insurance.

Book Your Flights Early “People have the misconception that it’s cheaper to go last-minute, but things have changed since the pandemic,” says Gai Spann, founder of Spanning the Globe Tours. “Instead of flying half-full flights, airlines are canceling them. The bottom line is that they don’t need your last-minute fare anymore, so you’re better off shopping early.” To understand what you should realistically expect to pay (and what’s a deal), Spann recommends getting familiar with a route’s usual and predicted cost at such sites as Google Flights , Hopper , and Skyscanner . The cheapest day to book, on average, is Sunday, according to a recent report from the Airlines Reporting Corp. and Expedia. The most expensive tends to be Friday. Starting a domestic trip on a Wednesday vs. Sunday or Monday can save you up to 15 percent.

Great Places to Stay

Go Luxury Camping (or ’Glamping’)

The fresh-air trend that gained speed during the pandemic has shown no signs of slowing. Case in point: the growing network of national-park-adjacent safari-inspired accommodations from Under Canvas , where you can have a unique overnight experience near some of America’s natural wonders without needing to buy a boatload of gear to do it. The locations—near Yellowstone, Zion, Grand Canyon, Acadia, and other national parks—offer restaurants, adventure concierge services, and en suite bathrooms. Nights at Under Canvas locations start under $200. Also check out Terramor , the campground network KOA’s entry into glamping (glamorous camping), featuring Frette linens and WiFi in each tent, in Bar Harbor, Maine. The Resort at Paws Up in Greenough, Mont., features 36 ultraluxe tents on the Blackfoot River.

Try a Better All-Inclusive If the term “all-inclusive” makes you think of watered-down drinks and bad buffet food ... sure, places like those are still around. But a growing number of resorts that are all-inclusive—meaning you pay a flat fee per traveler that generally includes lodging, food, drinks, and some activities—are luring guests by leveling up. Palmaïa, the House of AïA , in the Mayan Riviera in Mexico, for example, features swim-up suites, yoga programs, and meditation sessions. On the Greek island of Kos, Ikos is presenting a new all-inclusive concept: dining out at a local restaurant as part of your all-inclusive cost. “All-inclusives are about having no hidden surprises,” Waldon says. “Some people want to put their wallet away and not have to think about signing another bill.”

Look for a Historic Hotel

If you are headed to the Iberian Peninsula: In Spain, consider a stay at one of the 90-plus paradores , a network of hotels converted beginning in the 1920s from architecturally significant or restored historic buildings and castles. Take Parador de Corias : At the former monastery, built in the 11th century, you’ll find luxury accommodations with sweeping countryside views, along with a spa, restaurant, and pool. In Portugal, you’ll find over 40 pousadas , also restored historic sites. Paradores and pousadas tend to feature elevated local fare and beautifully appointed rooms, some for under 100 euros per night, including meals.

Book a Ritzy Rental

Compared with staying at a hotel, comfortable luxury rentals with amenities like a well-equipped kitchen and swimming pool can lower the cost of food, drinks, entertainment, and transportation, especially if you’re traveling with a group. You’re also likely to have a more authentic experience staying in an area where the locals live. In addition to Airbnb and Vrbo, consider alternative options such as Airbnb Luxe, Onefinestay, and Plum Guide for posh rentals. Booking a homestay using points is an option, too, via Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy .

All-inclusive resorts can be luxurious these days. But the fancy ones have the same everything-included pricing that makes them a deal if you like to drink or eat well. The Ikos resort on the Greek island Kos (shown above) offers a dramatic setting and Michelin-starred chefs.

Deals and Discounts

Request a Room Upgrade

In addition to asking nicely, you’re more likely to get a room upgrade if you’re a member of a hotel’s loyalty program (and even more likely if you carry its co-branded credit card). Travel advisers can help, too. If you already have your eyes on a luxury property, you might search online for a travel adviser that has “preferred agency” status with that brand, whether it’s the Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental, Rosewood, or something else. “Preferred agencies might give their clients a complimentary upgrade, plus breakfast for two daily, spa credits, and even airport transfers,” says Waldon, the travel adviser in Austin. “You can access that just by booking through a travel agency with standing in that program.”

Find a Package Deal

Even if you’re a savvy traveler adept at shopping for flights, resorts, cars, and cruises à la carte, don’t dismiss package deals put together by reputable travel agents or . . . your favorite warehouse club? Indeed, Costco can book members to Botswana, Ireland, Bordeaux, and beyond. The surprisingly luxe travel packages are available both in-store and online, and are backed by clear cancellation policies and the retailer’s robust customer service. Perks like free transfers, credits, and meals are often included. To make sure the deal’s a good one, double-check fares with those on online booking sites. Expedia also features an array of package deals sorted by interest, including golf vacations in Palm Springs, Calif., and couples getaways in Paris.

Take a Cruise Cruise itineraries are getting ever more interesting, with slow-speed European river barge cruises surging in popularity along with luxury “expedition” trips to places like the Arctic Circle. Look to outfitters like Hurtigruten for bucket-list itineraries like Circumnavigating Iceland, a nine-day trek from $4,721, or a seven-day Galápagos Islands Expedition Cruise from $6,082. On the lower-priced end of the spectrum are the mega-ships sailing from the world’s busiest passenger ports. Deals for those can often be had if you book very early or closer to the departure date. Because the cruise lines make a large portion of their money from onboard purchases, they seek to sail full ships. Check sites like CruiseSheet for bargains.

Consider 4 Stars Over 5

If you’re booking a luxury stay in Europe, you can save money by opting for a four-star hotel rather than a five-star, and get much the same experience, Waldon says: “The star rating is very strict in Europe, and there are some superluxury properties that don’t get a five-star rating because they don’t have a top-level restaurant or room service. But if you’re in the heart of Paris or another European city that’s surrounded by great restaurants, you probably won’t care.” A few of Waldon’s favorite luxury value places are Pavillon Faubourg Saint-Germain in Paris, often priced at a fraction of the price of five-star hotels like the Shangri-La and the Ritz; the Chesterfield Mayfair in London; the Hotel Santa Maria Novella in Florence, Italy; and the Kimpton Charlotte Square in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Costco offers members multiple package deals to Ireland that include stops in Dublin (top right) and respites along the coast (above left and bottom right).

Secret Addresses

Leverage Blogs and Social Media

Doing some digital homework can lead you to the restaurants that locals love. Look to recent “best of” guides from such sites as Eater and The Infatuation, or search for dining blogs. If you have Instagram, use that, too. “Social media makes it much easier to see what a restaurant or attraction is really like through vignettes and videos,” says Spann at Spanning the Globe Tours. Find a restaurant’s hashtag on Instagram, then look at the most recent photos and videos. Along with the glamorized takes, you’ll see photos and videos of what the food and the place are really like.

Try a Tourist Pass

Carrying a discount card with some of your destination city’s most popular attractions might make you feel like a tourist. But that’s okay. Do some research at operators such as CityPass and Go City , and you might realize that you could save money by getting one, or end up hitting locations you otherwise might have skipped. But check to make sure the math works in your favor. If you’re planning on visiting just a few highlights, such as the American Museum of Natural History and the Empire State Building in New York City, a two-choice Go City Explorer pass for $79 will cost you $3 more than paying those two admission fees separately. If you’re planning a wall-to-wall, tour-packed itinerary in a location like Oahu in Hawaii, a three-day all-inclusive Go City pass for $229 could save you $475 vs. separate admission fees for Pearl Harbor museums , a luau, Sea Life Park , a sailing trip, and other excursions.

Free-Admission Smarts

Across the globe, many institutions have specific days (or nights) of the week or month where admission is free or donation-based. Do the research and you could save a bunch. If your family has a membership to a local museum, zoo, or botanical garden, check to see if there are reciprocal arrangements with other museums or cultural sites. The North American Reciprocal Museum Association, for example, offers free member benefits to over 1,200 institutions.

A Guide to Luxury Travel in Japan - Top 3 Must-See Places

Traveling around the world is a lifestyle that most people want to achieve until the end of their lives. Fortunately, some people can afford enough money and turn the dreams they always had into reality. On their bucket list, Japan will certainly be one of the destinations they want to explore. This country is a mixture of tradition and modern culture, which is why it seems so attractive to many. Apart from that, we also have to say that Japan has some really cool and luxurious destinations that would be a shame not to visit.

On this page, we will give you tips on how to organize your luxurious trip in Japan. Also, we will discuss some of the most popular luxurious destinations to visit while spending time in the country. We are sure that our recommendations can turn your trip into a memorable experience. Let’s go!

The Best Luxurious Hotels in Japan to Visit

We will start this guide with the most luxurious hotels you can stay at in Japan. They are:

Shinjuku Prince Hotel

  • Hyatt Regency Seragaki Island Okinawa
  • Hotel Orion Motobu Resort & Spa.

Let’s discuss each of these places in more detail.

This hotel is one of the luxurious places that may fit the budget of a larger group of people (it is less expensive than the other two on this list). You can get really a lot of opportunities to make your trip more comfortable. For example, some of the rooms have scenic city views. Each of the rooms is properly equipped, which ensures complete comfort. Also, if you plan a business trip, there are excellent meeting rooms and a conference center that can help you organize your team better.

Ultimately, we have to highlight that this hotel has a casino, which is a perfect option for people wanting to test their luck while in Japan. Yet, enjoying such an activity is also possible from the hotel room since there are many online casinos that gambling lovers will appreciate and have the same level of entertainment as in a real casino.

Hyatt Regency Seragaki Island, Okinawa

This place is a direct synonym for luxury since it really does meet the expectations of every traveler with a larger budget. This place has huge indoor and outdoor pools. Each of the pools comes with umbrellas, sun loungers, and cabanas. There is also a children's club, which makes this place perfect for families. There are, in total, more than 340 rooms, and each one has air conditioning, bathrobes, free wife, and so on. There are also meeting rooms in case you come here for business purposes.

Zaborin Hotel

Did you know that winters in Japan can be quite cold in some places? That may seem attractive to a certain group of tourists looking for luxury. In that case, Zaborin hotel can be perfect for winter sports lovers. This is a hotel that is only 20km away from the Niseko Annupuri International Ski Area. The entire hotel has been completely renovated, and it features the most modern style. Each of the rooms here comes with a balcony, which is a big benefit for many travelers. Best of all, the hotel has private parking that is completely free! At least, you will have one concern less!

3 Best Luxury Destinations in Japan

If the most important thing for you is to stay in the luxurious hotels and resorts, the previous section will be more valuable. Yet, if you want to know more about luxurious destinations with great outdoor activities, then this section will be more valuable. We decided to highlight three towns in Japan and highlight the biggest luxurious opportunities travelers can enjoy. These three towns are:

Tokyo itself has many luxurious hotels, resorts, and destinations. However, there are also many luxurious destinations you should visit and have some memorable moments there. The hotel we recommend the most is Mandarin Oriental, one of the most luxurious hotels in the entire world. If you are willing to enjoy the world-class cousin, then we recommend you visit L’Effervesencence, one of the restaurants with the best French food. People who are willing to enjoy tradition should visit the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. In one place, you will see a mixture of French, English and Japanese culture (gardens, to be precise). Last but not least, our team gives a strong recommendation to Kabukiya Theater, a prestigious kabuki theater in Japan.

Kyoto night Japanese women

It is hard to determine what is the most luxurious thing to see in Osaka. We primarily recommend you stay at Rity-Carlton in Osaka. This is a five-star hotel that will ensure the highest level of comfort for every visitor. For food lovers, we strongly recommend the Kushikatsu Daruma. It is a Michelin-starred restaurant where you can taste all sorts of Japanese traditional foods. Are you a big fan of skyscrapers? Reach the Umeda Sky Building and experience one of the most stunning views in the world!

When to Start a Luxurious Journey in Japan?

The answer depends on what you want to see and do in Japan. In general, there are three periods of the year when tourists usually come. Those three periods are spring (from March to May), when the temperature is nice, in Autumn, between September and November, and around New Year Holidays. Of course, if you want to avoid crowds, then come in periods not mentioned here. Yet, we believe it will be much more entertaining to pick one of the options we highlighted.

How Much Money Do I Need for a Luxurious Trip in Japan?

Once again, it is quite hard to give a precise answer since we don’t know what your plans are. However, we suggest that you start planning only if you can afford at least 5000 USD. That’s some sort of minimum that can ensure you a comfortable trip. If you want to visit some of the destinations highlighted on this page, you will need twice as that.

Final Thoughts

We believe that our guide will help you organize a luxurious trip to Japan. We highlighted the best hotels and best destinations in general and answered some crucial questions. No one says you need to visit all these places at once. Divide the costs by organizing multiple trips to this lovely country over the years.

Antarctica Cruise: 7 Important Things to Consider When Booking

Sharing is caring!

One of the most iconic destinations on the planet is Antarctica. This bucket list trip is truly a trip of a lifetime. It is one of the most revered of travel destinations and for great reason. However it can feel quite overwhelming when planning a trip. It is not cheap to visit Antarctica and you want your trip to be the best it can be. Below we share important things to consider when booking your Antarctica cruise based on our experience of researching our trip as well as visiting the White Continent recently.

Jump to a Heading Below

Top 7 Things to Consider When Booking an Antarctica Cruise

As with any destination, one of the most difficult parts is often the initial research. For destinations that are not heavily visited, it’s not always easy to find word of mouth feedback or people to talk to about what is the most important things to consider.  After returning from our first trip to Antarctica and speaking with many people who have been recently, we have come up with the most important things to consider when booking a trip.

Number of Guests & Size of the Ship

The absolute most important thing to consider in my opinion when booking a cruise to Antarctica is the number of guests on the ship. Larger cruise ships with more than 500 passengers cannot ever get off the ship in Antarctica. There are strict rules in the Antarctic Peninsula about how many people can land at a time and when they can land. Only 100 people at a time can set foot on any one location in Antarctica, which means the more people on your boat, the less time you will have for excursions.

For a ship with less than 100, you will often have 2 excursions per day – either on land or by zodiac boats. For ships with more than 100 passengers, the ship will either dock in the area for the entire day letting off half the passengers in the morning and the other half in the afternoon or guests will have less time on land to accommodate several groups of people.

For our ship, the Magellan Explorer, we had 93 passengers, which meant that the entire ship was able to go to every landing or zodiac cruise. When spending this much money, you want to have the ability to see and do as much as possible, which is why we feel the best way to ensure this is by booking a small ship with less than 100 passengers .

Many itineraries to Antarctica are called expeditions , rather than a cruise as there is no set itinerary. Instead, you are exploring the Antarctic continent looking for good weather conditions, unique wildlife and beautiful scenery. This is the wonder of an Antarctic expedition cruise.

Amenities On-board the Ship

On our recent sailing with Antarctica 21, we had only a small sauna and a small gym. We had plans to use both, but honestly we were so busy we didn’t have time for either one!

Friends were on an Atlas Ocean Voyages sailing and they had a pool, 100 meter track, rooftop jacuzzi and more. That said, their ship also had more than 100 passengers so they were often rotating landings and were potentially spending more time on their boat than we were. Their boat had yoga classes, live music and more. If these type of amenities and activities are important for you, make sure to carefully research your boat and it’s offerings.

For those with mobility issues, it is also important to consider whether you need a boat with an elevator. Our ship was only 3 main floors and did not have an elevator. The World Traveler by Atlas does have an elevator, which can make moving around the ship easier for those with mobility limitations.

Itinerary & Type of Excursions

For many people, their only aim is to get to Antarctica, but for others who might be returning or who have specific interests in mind, it is important to research the various cruise itineraries carefully. Different cruises offer various activities such as wildlife watching, shore landings, kayaking, and even camping on the Antarctic continent. Choose an itinerary that aligns with your interests and desired level of activity.

Many of the ships cruising the Antarctic Peninsula offer things like sea kayaking, but you must know that it is often VERY limited. Our ship had spots only for 10 kayakers and many of those spots were booked out a year or more in advance. If this is an activity that is very important, you will need to book well in advance and/or choose a ship that has many spots. I know that Aurora cruises have more spots for kayakers than some of the smaller boats.

Additionally, some trips do not cross the Antarctic Circle. If this is something that is important for you, choose an itinerary that includes this.  In general most small boats tend to cruise along the South Shetland Islands with one or two continental landings

Other activities to consider or look out for on ships include snorkeling (yes you can do this!), submarine rides, helicopter rides from the ship to view glaciers, overnight camping on ice, and so much more.

I will tell you that one of the biggest issues we faced on our ship was a serious case of FOMO. If we chose to do one activity, we always felt a tinge of jealousy at what the others were doing. Everything here is so fabulous that you have to make choices on what is most important to you and try not to get jealous of the experiences others are having. Easier said than done I can tell you!

Duration & What You Want to See

Remember for any cruise you choose, the first day will include boarding towards the late afternoon and the last day will be reserved only for breakfast and disembarking. Therefore, a 10 day cruise is essentially only 8 days out at sea.

The other option to consider is what do you want to see? Are you interested in seeing the pristine white continent covered in snow? If so, head to Antarctica at the start of the season to see the winter conditions as they begin to thaw.

Interested in seeing more penguins? Your best bet is to visit during December and then January to see penguin chicks.

What type of penguins can I expect to see? If you are heading down to the Antarctic peninsula you can generally expect to see Gentoo penguins, Adélie penguins and Chinstrap penguins. If you want to see King penguins you will need to go South Georgia Island or the Falkland Islands For the elusive Emperor penguins you will need to go well below the Antarctic circle.

From the bustling extraordinary wildlife of early summer to icy landscapes of late summer, there is always something amazing to see whatever time you visit the continent. If I were to recommend the best time to go, I would say February, which is also high season and when everyone else wants to go!

During the height of the season, there can be as many as 80 ships in the Antarctic Peninsula . Towards the end of the season , there may be as few as 15 . If you truly want to feel like you are alone there, go towards the beginning and ends of the season.

Educational Opportunities

The expedition team that were providing these lectures were not just young kids, they were all professionals in their field, offering detailed scientific knowledge in easily digestible formats. For those interested in truly learning more about this amazing part of our planet, I highly recommend making sure that your boat has plenty of educational offerings.

In addition to our lectures, our boat was also one of 15 boats that participate in Citizen Science programs while in Antarctica. I didn’t even know this was something to consider, but now that I know, I would highly recommend finding a boat that offers these programs. It is a very unique experience to help collect samples that will lend information to the scientific databases.

Gifted Clothing & More

Instead of being gifted parkas, they can be rented easily in Ushuaia before departure, through the ship itself or you can use your own winter gear such as ski clothes. For our cruise, we opted to use our own ski clothes which worked out quite well. We knew our clothes fit, we knew how to layer them for optimal warmth and we didn’t add to environmental waste.

For many visitors to Antarctica however, this is almost as important as the cruise itself, so consider for yourself if this is a deal breaker for you.

Regardless of the parka, almost all cruise lines will offer the use of specialized waterproof knee high boots to be used while on excursions. This is important for a variety of reasons. There are strict rules about what can go on land and the cleaning process needed before and after landing. These boots are perfect for the conditions of Antarctica, they don’t let in water when you have wet landings and they keep your feet nice and warm when it is cold outside.

Book IAATO Partnered Ships Only

Tourism in Antarctica is skyrocketing, with more than 40% growth in passenger numbers forecast for the next season.  Interestingly, 80% of visitors are landing at at only 20 landing sites, there’s a huge strain on a tiny portion of this precious continent. Facing these and other environmental challenges head-on is the purpose of IAATO.

This year for example, the avian flu has made its way to Antarctica. IAATO quickly put into place strict rules and regulations about how guests can interact with the wildlife and act on landings.

Going to Antarctica is a massive privilege that should not be taken lightly. The white continent faces unprecedented challenges and deserves to be approached conscientiously and respectfully, and this responsibility lies with the tourists to ensure they are supporting businesses that also see this as being important.

To find out more, you can read the guidelines on conduct here , but you should also receive this from your boat before departure.
