Why Book a Guided Tour or Day Trip When Visiting Munich?

Guided tours and day trips can make your travels a whole lot easier and more enjoyable. Once you realize how amazing they are, they’re really a game changer for your travel experience! Here’s why:

  • Forget about stressing over planning the perfect itinerary that hits all the best sights, finding the best ticket prices, and fitting everything into a tight schedule – guided tours handle all the details, from itineraries to tickets and transportation . All you have to do is show up, immerse yourself in the experience, and truly enjoy your vacation.
  • Aside from eliminating the stress of planning, guided tours and day trips can give you a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the destinations you visit. Most tours are led by trained guides and locals who can give you personal recommendations or in-depth explanations of historic and cultural sites.
  • Guided tours are also a lifesaver if you don’t speak German! Tour guides break that language barrier and give you insights into the local culture or uncover hidden gems that you probably wouldn’t find by yourself. And not only is it a good way to connect with locals, but you can also meet and talk with other fellow travelers during the tours.

Tip: It’s always a good idea to book guided tours and especially guided full-day trips in advance. Some of them, like those in popular destinations, can sell out pretty quickly. This is especially true during peak season.

Booking in advance secures your spot and sometimes tour operators even offer discounts for early bookings or offer a generous cancelation option. Some tours also have limited capacity, so if you’re traveling as a group booking and planning ahead is crucial.

Free Walking Tours in Munich: Guided tours and trips with Freetour.com

Are you planning to spend your next vacation in Germany? Don’t forget to visit Munich, the capital of Bavaria. Often called the city with the best-preserved typical German customs, Munich gives you delicious cuisine, exceptional beer, and Oktoberfest, among other things.

But if you really want to feel the city vibe, you have to book our free walking tour in Munich. Let the professional guides passionately show you this metropolis and tell you more about its history, customs, and traditions! Let’s take a look at some traveling tips and dive deeper into the atmosphere of Bavaria with our walking tours in Munich. We guarantee you’ll undoubtedly remember this adventure!

About Munich

Let’s take a closer look at the captivating city of Munich. Founded in 1158, this vibrant metropolis is located in the center of Bavaria. People usually visit this city to explore its stunning architecture and historical places. There are many places that won’t leave even the most exacting travelers cold. When in Munich, you should definitely visit Marienplatz and the Neues Rathaus, the Englishcher Garten, Numphenburg Palace, and Munich Residenz. If you want to taste local delicacies, go to the bustling Viktualienmarkt. When booking our Munich tours, you can see these places. All you need to do is to book your tour via the website and be at the meeting point on time.

Beyond this, this old city is also home to one of the biggest opera houses in the world, the National Theatre. If you like opera, you can check the schedule of performances and book your tickets in advance. You can visit one of Munich's beer gardens to experience and taste the local culture. However, if you want to dive deeper into the city atmosphere, we recommend booking one of our free walking tours in Munich.

Things to Do in Munich

Have you already booked your tickets to Munich? Well, that’s a commendable ambition! It’s time to plan your trip to make sure you don’t miss anything. Here are some of the most exciting things to do in this old German city after our Munich walking tour.

Visit Marienplatz: You can begin your Munich adventure with the city's center, Marienplatz. It’s an old square surrounded by old, picturesque buildings. Here, you can also see the Glockenspiel, an old clock tower with animated figures.

Go to the Frauenkirche: It’s the oldest and most beautiful cathedral in Munich, the most famous city sight. To see the panoramic views, you must climb to the top.

Visit Nymphenburg Palace: Visiting this place is a must, especially if you want to learn more about Bavarian royalty.

Walk in the Englischer Garten: Here, you can rent a bike and explore one of the largest urban parks in Germany.

Visit Viktualienmarkt: It’s the best place to taste German culinary delights. You can taste everything here, from traditional Bavarian treats to fresh produce.

Where to Stay in Munich?

The answer to this question depends on your budget and plans for this trip. Munich has many fantastic locations where you can stay for a night. For example, if you plan to walk around the city center, you can stay in the Altstadt-Lehel district. But if you are looking for a more bohemian atmosphere, you should book apartments in Gärtnerplatzviertel, the district with many modern boutiques and shops. However, if you prefer a quieter place, why not opt for Haidhausen? This district is quiet and has many charming streets and small local cafes.

If you are looking for budget-friendly options, you should opt for hostels.

The Best Places to Eat in Munich

As Munich is the third largest city in Germany, there are hundreds of cafes and restaurants serving traditional and international cuisine. But what if it’s your first trip to this metropolis, and you have no idea which places to choose? Let’s list the most high-rated restaurants:

- Beef Room 61

- Hungriges Herz

Half-Day Munich City Tour

The highlights and history of the bavarian capital.

This tour gives you the complete and fully informative walking tour of Munich’s city center plus cultural and historical highlights outside the center of the city, which we reach by car. On foot, we visit the medieval roots of the town, see the grand boulevards of the 19th century kings that transformed Munich into a royal city, and touch on some aspects of the 3rd Reich period. You will see the important historical sites and buildings in the city center, as well as museums, churches, town squares and some modern elements of Munich.

With the car, we visit attractions such as the fantastic Nymphenburg Palace and the beautiful gardens. An optional inside visit is well worth it, especially the Hall of Beauties and the royal carriage museum. We will also visit the current #1 attraction in Munich, the futuristic BMW World, and see the Olympiapark, where the 1972 Summer Olympics were held. We often drive through various neighborhoods to give you a good look at how people live.

All in all, you will learn a lot about the culture and history of Munich and Bavaria. This is a five-hour tour , but, of course, can be adapted to fit your schedule.

Good solid product that could still get improved.

Generally quite satisfied. Above standard quality but not that exceptional. A bit high price for the regular standard big group excursion. Kind and professional staff, safe driving. All worked fine and was pretty well timed/organised. A pity that the staff had little knowledge of foreign languages and did not do anything about it during the trip (short briefing, visual explanations, WhatsApp summaries). More time should be available at key points of interest (the lakes, the coast) and less devoted to the lunch break/localities. It is personal and without any good knowledge of Spanish but there was perhaps too much talk/information to be absorbed and too little time for reflection/experiencing.

I don't speak Spanish so I have no idea how to answer these questions, but the tour was horrible. The fact that you sent me a survey in Spanish when I took the English speaking tour shows how incompetent your company is.

Great experience Wonderful tour 😀

Great experience 😁 I booked the wrong tour (Spanish speaking) when I should've booked the English speaking one. It was quickly fixed and my partner and I went with the Spanish tour but there was an English speaking tour guide and I'm not sure of his name I think it was Camillo but he was so so lovely so knowledgeable about the area of Bruges gave us all amazing recommendations. With the price of the tour it saved all the hassle of getting there on our own and not knowing where to exactly go, we were shown around and told so many stories and legends of the area. It was very professional but also very laid back we had a great laugh and a great day all in all 😊

Super recommended

We were a bit skeptical about the quality of a free tour, but our guide Cristian proved we were tot wrong. He was exceptionally knowledgeable, explained very well all you possibly wanna know about Colombia's history, nature, traditions etc. 4hours tour that took us around the downtown, including a local variety of fruit, and a coffee tasting experiences. More we couldn't ask. Thank you.

Memorable experience!

The one-day guided tour to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe / San Sebastián has been an amazing experience! All the more because of Asier, a great guide whose vast knowledge and unmatched eagerness to share with us genuine insights on the culture and history of the Basque countries made us travel both in place and time.. and to plan to come back soon again !

Wallace was great!

Wallace was great, he provided valuable information which helped us navigate San Sebastián with better context.

Not to miss experience with Paulina

I had a wonderful day with my two friends on a day trip last Saturday. We headed to Girona, Figueres and Cadaques. Paulina, our guide, is the best professional ever - that kind of person that make you feel at home at the first sight. Besides being so competent, she knows a lot about art and history, and that made all the difference. Thank a lot, definitely would recommend. Fabiano - Brazil

A bit dissappointed from change of guide language

I booked the tour myself directly from Buendia website with English guide for 3 people and we were put in the Spanish guide group the day of tour without prior notification. The tour was very good and the Spanish guide very nice.

Good morning Irena, We wanted to thank you for you to trust in Buendía, and also for the time it took yo to write this comment. We alredy talked with our colleges un Brussels about this situation, and they told us that it was a human mistake. Although the activity was booked in English, they send you with the Spanish group. We apologise if youy didn´t enjoy all the visit due to this mistake. We will work for this not to happen again. If you need anything else in the future just let us know. Kind regards, Buendía Team

Excelente dia!

Kevin, the guide, was very professional and polite. His English was quite good. Bus was confortable and on time...just the músic onboard reggaeton could be replaced by clássical/ chill out músic, instead. It was annoying to have it playing loud...the bus drivers should be more considerate of Passengers. Donostia is a must see!San Juan Gaztelugatxe aint for the faint hearted.Trekking shoes advised and water and good lungs.A must!

Great tour. Even though it rained during the Peña Palace portion of the tour, our guide Isabella was great. She still made enjoyable and worthwhile. She was very knowledgeable and helpful though the whole tour. Isabella was very considering not just her people in her group but also to others. She made it a point to ask security guards to let those with infants inside the building/palace instead of standing in the rain. They were not even in our group. Very impressed. Highly recommend tours with Isabella.

Two meals (Zermatt and Innsbruck) we unedible....too salty and Zermatt hotel failed to clean dishes from tables in morning yet required us to eat there rather than clean tables (for non group guests). I was pretty unhappy with G Adventures at the beginning as I had expressed concerns with my health and wanted to cancel but they wouldn’t refund my money. However, the guide that I had, Andrei, was so incredible. He was so comforting, helpful, kind, and fun. Great trip. Guide was excellent. What people love about europe tours from munich.

Tour was fantastic, hotels with name B&B HOTELS were disgusting, hotel wasn't 3 star maybe 1, service was terrible. I didn't shower at these hotels due to shower issues. Once we moved on tour became lovely. Never inform a guest that they cannot cancel an outing if they say they weren't feeling well. Money wasn't the issue, it was the fact tour guide pushed the situation until I lost patience with her. As far as tipping goes, I have always understood tipping is and always will be on performance. Not to be forced into what you think I should tip. Do your job and get paid by your Company, tips are extra for a job well done not just half assed. Suggestions are fine .
CostSaver Imperial Highlights 10 days. I would highly recommend this trip. We traveled in July 2023. This is the less expensive sister company to Trafalgar. We traveled to Munich, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, and Salzburg, and a few other smaller cities. The trip was about $1600, not including airfare and additional optional experiences. We had an excellent tour director, Judith Lee. There were 33 people on the tour from all over the world including Australia, South Africa, Canada, United States, Malaysia and other countries. We had the option of 12 additional optional experiences. If you did all of them, it would cost you an additional 841 Euros. We did 9 of the 12 optional tours. I would not recommend any of the optional dinners (except one- see below), as the food choices were limited and I felt like the venues were tourist traps. I also did not like the day trip to Szentendre (63 Euros) just outside Budapest. It was just a tiny city with nothing but outdoor shopping and a few eateries. Nowhere to escape the heat. It included a light lunch, which was hot goulash (like a broth soup) and strudel, no air conditioning. I felt like this was a tourist trap. I really did not like the optional dinner just outside Vienna at Marchfelderhof restaurant for 72 Euros. Every square inch of the restaurant was filled with useless tchotchkes, which we did not find amusing, and it was a 45 minute drive outside the city. it was only filled with group tours when we went. We had a choice of three food options for dinner. We did like some of the food, but not everyone might like the limited options. They played American music and sometimes they have a fortune teller come around to the tables as well. I would have rather stayed in the city and spent that money on a nice restaurant in the city. We really liked the optional night tour in Prague, the lunch cruise in Prague, the Sound of Music tour, the tour to Eagle’s Nest, and our favorite was the dinner cruise in Budapest. However, because this is a fast paced tour, doing the optional tours did take away from other things you could do on your own in the city. If you have time to do research before your trip, you may find other things you’d prefer to see, but we didn’t do that. The trip included tours of each major city with local guides who were all excellent. The trip had 3 included dinners- 2 of which were terrible, so you may want to skip it and spend time in the city. The hotels were all outside the city center, but we were able to take public transport into the cities. We felt safe everywhere we traveled, but never stayed out past about 9:30pm. The hotels were small European hotel chains. Rooms are typical European- small, but clean, and all included free wifi. They all seemed to have good soundproofing as well. All had hair dryers, but only one had a refrigerator and coffee machine. No other amenities in the rooms. Europe has a new restriction on air conditioning, so we did not always get a good night’s sleep due to hot, stuffy rooms. Plus they only had thick comforters on the bed, not even a top sheet. I don’t think the AC was on in any hotel, so you may want to ask for a room change to the north side of the building if possible- might be cooler. If it was hotter out, maybe they would have turned on the AC. I read online that some American brand hotels might be more likely to have AC, but I cannot verify that. Trafalgar does the same trip, but it’s a few hundred more, but they stay in Hyatt and Holiday Inn etc, so there might be better AC in those hotels- so check it out if AC is a priority. Breakfast was included at each hotel and there was usually a pretty good selection of food. We purchased a European sim card and unlimited data online through Holafly before we left home and activated it once we got to Munich. It cost $35 for 10 days and it worked perfectly everywhere we traveled. We used WhatsApp to communicate with loved ones at home, as you can text and call using only data. Also, our tour director used WhatsApp to send us tour details and the seating assignments on the bus. Everyone in our tour group was very nice. We had travelers from 10 years old to people in their 70s. There were five single travelers as well from 18 years old to someone in her 60s. Most people dressed very casually and wore sneakers most of the time, as you’ll be doing a great deal of walking. Bring layers and an umbrella, and a light rain jacket. We had days from 55 degrees fahrenheit to 85 degrees, and several days of rain. It was difficult to find money exchange places, but most places accepted credit cards. I've read it's best to use an ATM machine vs money exchange, as the money exchange will charge you a fee. Some smaller stores only accepted cash- most only in Euros, but some touristy areas also accepted US and Australian dollars. Uber was available in most cities. We used Google Maps for getting around and it was accurate when looking up directions for public transportation as well. We will definitely book another trip with either CostSaver or Trafalgar- might spend the extra money if we know Trafalgar goes to hotels that definitely have AC.
The guides were wonderful and had a lot of information to share. The driver was superb, very careful and considerate. Osman was very good with his history of places, historical events etc. He lay down the time and place for our meetings. Very relaxed and understanding.

Both the bus guide and Brugges walking tour guide were great. We got to see a lot of the city and learn about its history. We stopped at a chocolate store and got samples which were excellent. The bus was very clean and comfortable. I would recommend this tour Read more Written March 23, 2024
  • probablylostlol 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Tour It was a long drive so we stopped for a bathroom break halfway there. Once we got there the instructions on where to meet up were very clear. Our guide was very knowledgeable and gave us lots of good information. We had the option to skip the tour and walk on our own for the time there but I recommend learning about the history. After the tour was complete, we had about two hours to see the city on our own. Definitely get a Belgian waffle while you’re there! Read more Written March 1, 2024

  • İslam K 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles BAD EXPERIENCE NIGHTMARE @buendiatours 19.02.2024 we joined the tour of Amsterdam Bruges with Buendia Tour, while it should have started at 8:30 in the morning, we waited for the bus for 40 minutes. The tour guide was very indifferent. We went half an hour late in Bruges. He took a half hour toilet break. He took a 20-30 minute toilet break where we got off again. He stole the time by chatting with other tourists with his broken accent outside the center under the rain. It did not fit the hours and program written in the tour, it left 2-2:30 hours as a free time, which is 40 minutes of arrival at the meeting point where the time of arrival is mixed. He said that the tour will end at 18:00, he said that we will meet where we started, but for a person who came to Bruges for the first time, the city center and the meeting area were 40 minutes walking distance and the way back was very mixed, so we had a hard time finding the assembly area and we were only 3 minutes late with us. There was another Turkish family with children. He left us not in a city, but also in a country. We spent extra time and money to return to Amsterdam. We also want our thermos glass back on the bus. this is not a tour it's a disgrace @buendiatours Is it difficult for you to wait 2 minutes for 5 people, one of whom is a child, when we waited for your bus for 40 minutes, even though you know how difficult it is to return to Amsterdam? No problems and tour guides helped with all situations This was a great day trip to see a beautiful town. The drive there and back was comfortable with a rest stop for coffee and food. Then Carlo walked us around the city with time for pictures and information. At end of tour we had 3 hours to shop and eat. The waffles, Belgian chocolate and lace were lovely. Carlos and Jose were great and pleasant tour guides. Read more Written January 2, 2024
  • rndtaber 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Bruges is Beautiful The town of Bruges was beautiful! Our tour guide Astrid was very knowledgeable about the history and took us around for a few hours and then gave us time to explore on our own. I really appreciated that part. I didn't realize just how long the ride was from Amsterdam to Bruges, so that made it an especially a long day. Other than that, it was very enjoyable and do reccomend to check it out. Just make sure you bring something to either read or watch on the bus ride. Read more Written December 31, 2023
  • MsPlayita 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Amsterdam to Bruges Bus Tour It was a beautiful destination to go to Bruges and the tour while there was fine. The issues come on the bus ride. There was no bathroom. We made one stop in the morning at a small gas station to get something to eat, drink and use the facilities. We arrived at noon and didn’t get a chance to eat lunch until 3 pm and many shops close around 2 so it was hard to find food options. We left at 5:30 pm and didn’t make a stop for a bathroom break and it took 4 hours due to traffic. If you have a small bladder this trip is not for you. The tour guide also didn’t talk at all during the bus ride after we got out of Amsterdam. Nothing about anything along the roadside or about the Netherlands or Belgium. With 3 hours there could be plenty of things to talk about and keep the group interested. I was disappointed as I have had many great bus tours in the past but this one made me question booking future tours. Read more Written December 31, 2023
  • Anna E 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great Taste of Brugge! Visiting Brugge has been on my bucket list for years so when I saw this quick day trip from Amsterdam (which I was in to meet a cruise ship) I jumped at the chance. The bus was new and very comfortable. The bus driver was excellent. His ability to maneuver in the heavy city traffic we encountered was amazing. Our guide however made the trip. She was attentive to the needs of all participants. Given the tour was for both English and Spanish speakers, she was phenomenal. She was very knowledgeable about Brugge, Belgium and the whole region. Her suggestions for what to do and see during our free time were spot on. I am a solo traveler so am very appreciative of being with a team that was looking out for our safety the entire trip. Read more Written December 15, 2023
  • PiePolak 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Some reservations I really enjoyed the trip and Bruges is a stunning place to visit. Both guides, Eduardo and Astrid were very professional and informative. The departure location is not particularly well described or easy to find. If it was described as outside Aloha Bowl would make more sense. Also, both the guide and the bus were late to arrive and then we waited for late passengers and departed 40 minutes late which cut into the free time in Bruges. Not nearly good enough Buendia! • OPHELIANT 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Choose English only tours. Spanish/English speaking guides. Our English speaking Guide Mathias was a fountain of knowledge both historically and politically. The issue was that most of the tour was in Spanish at least 70% during the one hour transportation by bus from Berlin and one hour back. Our "English" guide was Italian with a very heavy accent which at times was difficult to understand. I would suggest to everyone do not choose a multi speaking experience, choose English only or Spanish only. Read more Written 27 March 2024
