Woodward Dream Cruise 2022: Everything you need to know

dream cruise woodward

Big-finned Caddys, classic Corvettes, souped-up dragsters, and even the venerable 1997 Honda Civic Type R, which turns 25 this year, will be lined up bumper-to-bumper Saturday for the 27th annual Woodward Dream Cruise.

Auto enthusiasts from all over the world, including New Zealand, Japan and Australia, flock to the cruise annually for a taste of car history in Michigan.

The cruise started in 1995 and is always held on the third Saturday in August.

It began as an effort by Nelson House plus a group of volunteers seeking to raise money for a soccer field in Ferndale. They also wanted to re-create the nostalgic era of the 1950s and '60s, with music and cars roaming down Woodward. The first year brought in 250,000 people and has grown each year since then.

Nine Oakland County cities participate along a 16-mile radius of Woodward.

Dream Cruise 2023: Classic cars and their fans take over Woodward

dream cruise woodward

Under clear blue skies, classic car lovers lived the dream Saturday on Woodward, with the 28th annual Dream Cruise in full swing from Ferndale to Pontiac from early morning past sunset.

Here are some of the sights (and sounds) from Metro Detroit's yearly celebration of car culture, Motown muscle and the region's rich automotive heritage.

Baby's first Cruise

It was 13-month-old Walt Cragun's first Woodward Dream Cruise, along with his parents Hannah and Chase. The family just moved to Farmington Hills from Las Vegas.

"I have a good friend who's from Clinton and when I said, 'what should we be looking out for when we move to Michigan? Where should we go?' He said, 'you can't miss the Woodward Dream Cruise,'" Hannah Cragun, 28, said.

The family was particularly taken with Charlie Liles' emerald green 1948 Ford F1 pickup truck, displayed in Royal Oak's Memorial Park.

"I actually saw one of these 10 years ago in a mining town," Cragun said. "(This one) was definitely more restored and beautiful."

Liles, 66, has lived in Royal Oak his whole life and attended all 28 Dream Cruises.

"I've been cruising Woodward for 50 years," he said.

Liles bought and restored the truck with his wife seven years ago.

"We drive it all over, it's just a hobby, a fun truck," he said.

Long live the 300

The Chrysler 300 ends production this year, but it will live on at the Cruise in the hands of enthusiasts like Mason Vetor.

The 22-year-old brought his wicked-looking, white, heavily modified 2018 300S to the Cruise this year. How wicked? He turned up the wick on the already robust Chrysler Hemi-V8’s 324 horsepower to 600 horses with mods like new headers and intake manifold to feed the beast under the hood. Well, if it had a hood.

“The intake manifold is so big I had to take the hood off,” said the Shelby Township resident. “It’s a pain to keep the engine clean, but it looks good.”

The mods don’t end at the engine. The Chrysler is lowered on custom gold Gray Star wheels, and the exhaust exits at the rear axles for added volume. Inside, Vetor added a blue “harness bar” for added chassis stiffening and deleted the rear seats. “Rear seats and passengers just add weight to the car.”

Better to blow the doors (and hood) off anything out of a Woodward stoplight.

A legacy on wheels

For some, like Len Palmeri, vintage cars serve as reminders of loved ones. Palmeri, 74, built his hot rod by hand with his father in 1969. The one-of-a-kind car is modeled after a 1929 Mercedes.

"The best gift my father could've ever given me was to help me build this car," Palmeri said.

"I learned a lot from him and you carry those skills with you the rest of your life and carry the memories because he's no longer with me."

The car is priceless to Palmeri and contains custom details like the names and initials of his parents, Tony and Jean.

Catering to car lovers

Pasteiner’s has been a Cruise tradition since before the annual Woodward Dream Cruise became an official event nearly 30 years ago.

Opened in 1987 by Steve Pasteiner, the Birmingham hobby shop has been a favorite of motorheads ever since, and it is a regular stop on the cars ‘n’ coffee circuit every Saturday morning throughout the summer. For the Dream Cruise, the store steps it up a notch with an official Cruise T-shirt and catered hot dogs and other eats for the passing crowd. Its parking lot, of course, is packed on this Dream Cruise Saturday with toys from Dodge Vipers to old Model A Fords to Pastenier’s own creations like the Nomad and Helldorado.

“The Cruise has really evolved over the decades as it’s become more famous,” said Pasteiner, who is also president of Advanced Automotive Technologies and a regular judge of auto concours. “Now it’s much more international in terms of the variety of cars — and the people. I had a couple of customers come in here wearing cowboy hats and jeans — and they were French! Didn’t speak a word of English. The Cruise now attracts people from everywhere.”

Celebrities, too.

Comedian and talk show host Jay Leno popped into Pastenier’s Saturday morning to look around, as has Detroit native and comedian Tim Allen in the past. “But it’s the auto executives who are the true celebrities in my mind,” said Pasteiner. “Like Mark Reuss, Jim Farley, Bob Lutz — they come in and we just talk cars.”

Celebrity aside, Pastenier said the Cruise is special because you can talk with anyone about cars on Woodward, bond with them, and the next thing you know you’re best friends.

“It’s different than, say, a Pebble Beach concours (that took place this week in California),” he said. “People work on their own cars and bring them to the Cruise — at Pebble, the owners have someone else do that for them.”

Chevy meets half-Chevy

Ronald Page, 75, of Oak Park, Illinois, drove his 1960 Chevrolet Impala, a gleaming white convertible with warm red accents, to Metro Detroit for the Cruise.

The ride takes more than five hours, but it’s worth it to Page, who was waiting patiently to get a picture of an upside down van riding down Woodward.

He’s made the trek every year the cruise has been on since 2015. He does it for the people, the car camaraderie and the festivities.

“I mean, I meet so many different people from different walks of life,” he said.

This year, one of those people was Ted Zulkowski, 52, of Roseville, who parked his “Forvette” in front of Page’s classic.

The “Forvette” is half of a 2001 Chevrolet Corvette topped with a 1931 Ford Model A truck. Zulkowski and his father-in-law built the truck/car over a two-year period, even giving it air conditioning while also ensuring it had the horn and front pheasant ornament like the Model A.

The two had the Corvette and then found the truck in a field “and wanted to … bring it back to life,” Zulkowski said. “So we grabbed the tractor and pulled it out of the field and there's where we started.”

Classics present and past

Tom Psilles owns a pristine 2005 Chevy Corvette C5, is a past president of the American Corvette Club, and has been coming to the club’s Dream Cruise paddock in the Walgreen’s parking lot in Birmingham for 22 years.

But his wife, Joan, 78, had the couple’s first classic.

She bought one of the first, 1964½ Ford Mustang coupes when it hit dealer lots nearly six decades ago. “It cost me $2,100 and I remember wondering if I’d be able to make the payments on it,” she smiled while watching cruisers stream by in front of the pharmacy.

She sold it a few years later (“It was just daily transportation then”), but when she and Psilles decided to buy a 1960s collector car 25 years ago, they started looking for Mustangs. Instead, a 1961 Corvette caught their eye. They restored it down to the floorboards, cruised the wheels off it, then turned it around for a handsome sum.

Still enamored of ‘Vettes, they drive the C5 now. “I love the styling,” said Tom. “And it’s comfortable. We go to Tucson every winter and we’ve taken the Corvette on the trip there and back.”

A Demonic possession

For a second straight year, car collector Leno took part in the Dream Cruise. At the 2022 event, he unveiled a special version of Ford Motor Co.'s all-electric F-150 Lightning pickup with a custom paint job designed in tribute to a 1970s F-150 once owned by Walmart founder Sam Walton.

This year's visit was all about gas-fueled, V-8-powered muscle, as the former longtime "Tonight Show" host became the first buyer to take possession of a "Last Call" Dodge Challenger SRT 170 Demon. It's one of 3,000 1,025-horsepower beasts being unleashed as Dodge ends production of its internal combustion engine muscle cars.

Leno took the wheel of his Octane Red model at Vinsetta Garage in Berkley and pulled out onto Woodward Saturday morning, followed in a black Demon by Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis.

The Best Oddball Cars We Saw at the 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise

Along with flashy sports cars and pristine classic muscle cars, the Woodward Dream Cruise welcomes plenty of unusual custom creations and obscure models.

subaru kei truck

Car shows aren't just about getting a glimpse at the latest 1000-hp supercars or poring over every detail on a well-maintained classic. They're also meant to show off the breadth of human ingenuity and creativity, something the Woodward Dream Cruise does to perfection. The show is open to anyone and anything, and just about every sort of vehicle you can imagine makes an appearance, and even some you never could've dreamed up. Read on to see some of the most bizarre and peculiar vehicles we saw at the 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise.

ford mustang gt with mustang gt trailer

This "Rat Royce," as is painted on the door, looks like the offspring of a Formula 1 car and the evil big rig from Steven Spielberg's Duel . Instead of a V-6 hybrid powertrain like modern F1 cars, however, this custom job features a Caterpillar inline-six diesel aft of the front wheels. The wide stance, dual rear wheels, semi-truck cab with a visor, and roof-mounted horns makes this one imposing truck.

lordstown endurance

Ohio-based startup Lordstown Motors finally began producing its electric Endurance pickup last fall. The Endurance's four hub-mounted motors emit 440 horsepower and eke out roughly 200 miles of range from the 109.0-kWh battery. But things quickly went south for the nascent automaker, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June . Only a handful of trucks were built and many were recalled earlier this year, so it was a surprise to see this Endurance driving down Woodward without manufacturer license plates.

tuktuk

The Woodward Dream Cruise draws herds of Polaris Slingshots , begging for attention with gaudy paint jobs and music blaring from their tinny speakers. But this enthusiast brought a different sort of three-wheeled contraption, a tuk-tuk. Also known as an auto rickshaw, this colorful tricycle had "Thailand" emblazoned on the back, where these vehicles are a popular alternative to taxis.

wooden ford truck

We couldn't look away after seeing this unique creation lumbering down Woodward. The truck takes the term "woody" to new heights—instead of wood paneling along the vehicle's flanks, the entire body is constructed from timber. But all of the essentials are still present, with headlights, side-view mirrors, and even a Ford badge. That makes this a Ford Fir-150, we wood have to guess.

fiat 500e

Fiat announced last fall that the latest 500—now offered exclusively as an EV—will come to the United States for 2024. The U.S.-spec version will be revealed this year's Los Angeles auto show, but we got a sneak preview with this Europe-market example we found at Woodward. Despite a switch to electric power, the 500e looks as charming as ever.

suspended animation hot rod

Not much information exists about this bizarre-looking hot rod, but we were able to dig up a photo online that identifies "Suspended Animation" as the hand-built 1974 concoction of one Ron Morgan of Dearborn, Michigan. We bet at least a few recreational substances were involved in the dreaming up of the buglike "Suspended Animation."

vaz 21011

Along with the cornucopia of American muscle cars, Woodward brings out vehicles from around the world, with this VAZ 21011 the only Russian vehicle we spotted. This heavily altered, licensed version of the Fiat 124 was assembled throughout the 1970s and 1980s, with the meager 1.3-liter four-cylinder sending less than 70 hp through a four-speed manual transmission. A sign in the window said this garage find from Moscow underwent a full restoration after being imported to the U.S. in 2020.

labatt blue car

Shotgunning a Labatt Blue is one thing; calling shotgun in a Labatt Blue is another. Although not as well known as Oscar Mayer's Weinermobile, this mobile beer can evoked plenty of smiles from the spectators. We're not even sure if this droptop pop-top is an official marketing effort from Labatt Brewing Company—based just across the river in Toronto, Canada—but this alcohol-fueled hop-rod certainly went down well with the Woodward crowd.

subaru sambar dias classic

This adorable van isn't just a Subaru Sambar, it's the Dias Classic, a retro-themed version of the kei van sold in Japan throughout the 1990s. With less than 60 horsepower from the rear-mounted four-cylinder engine, the Sambar certainly wasn't the quickest vehicle at Woodward. But a five-speed manual and rear-wheel drive could make this cutesy hauler more thrilling than you might expect .

ford festiva race car

It may not have 1578 horsepower like the Bugatti Bolide , contain a shrieking V-12 engine like the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro , or generate 1400 pounds of downforce like a Ferrari FXX K Evo , but we bet the owner of this Ford Festiva race car has just as much, if not more, fun as the owners of those exclusive track-only hypercars.

jeep wrangler jurassic park

We saw several faithful re-creations of iconic movie vehicles at Woodward, but this Jurassic Park–themed Jeep Wrangler was one of the most accurate. Everything is as it should be, from the red livery to the auxiliary roof lights, and it even packed dinosaur-catching equipment on a trailer hitch platform. The only dinos we saw at the Dream Cruise, however, were Ford Raptors and Ram T. Rexes .

lifted ford galaxie 500

On last year's oddball list , we included a lifted Chevy Camaro IROC-Z. This year the monster truck treatment has been applied to a mid-1960s Ford Galaxie 500. The boxy coupe towered above traffic and even wore bull bars and a pair of Hella lights for the full off-roader look. The Galaxie even required a step to reach the driver's seat thanks to the chunky tires.

delorean with ford raptor motor

Great Scott! It's a a twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 from a Ford F-150 Raptor stuffed into the back of a DeLorean! The enterprising owner mated the 450-hp powertrain—a notable upgrade over the stock Renault V-6's measly 130 ponies—to a Porsche six-speed manual and fitted his creation with four-piston Brembo brakes and KW coil-over suspension. He told us visual upgrades are in the works, and he plans to offer the conversion to other DeLorean owners next year.

mini gokart

Vehicles of all shapes and sizes are present at Woodward, including this minuscule go-kart doohickey. We're surprised this contraption even needs to wear plates, given that its driver probably weighs more than all of its parts combined.

chevy hhr offroader

This Chevrolet HHR is what happens to a Jurassic Park Jeep Wrangler when it drops out of high school and hangs out with the wrong crowd. We never thought we'd see one of Chevy's retro-styled vans converted into an off-roader, but if the "Gamble" vanity plate is any indication, this HHR was built to race in the Gambler 500 , an off-road rally for cheap, self-made all-terrain vehicles.

Headshot of Caleb Miller

Caleb Miller began blogging about cars at 13 years old, and he realized his dream of writing for a car magazine after graduating from Carnegie Mellon University and joining the Car and Driver team. He loves quirky and obscure autos, aiming to one day own something bizarre like a Nissan S-Cargo, and is an avid motorsports fan.

The Detroit Woodward Dream Cruise is the mothership of all car events. It's a celebration of Woodward Ave and car enthusiasm in the heart of the Motor City. I mean seriously, this incredible car cruise draws thousands of classic cars, muscle cars, trucks (and lots of crazy stuff ) to thunder down Woodward Avenue between Pontiac and Ferndale.

Chris and I can't wait to go this August !

AND...more than 1.5 million car enthusiasts from all over the world are revved up to see some spectacular (and crazy) vehicles!

See the World's Biggest Cruise!

When is the 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise?

August 19, 2023!

BUT ... several communities have fun events and classic car shows on August 18, 2023. See the event schedule below!

Woodward Dream Cruise Frequently Asked Questions

What day is the Woodward Dream Cruise 2023? August 19, 2023

Is the Woodward Dream Cruise free? Yes, the Dream Cruise is free to attend!

How long does the Woodward Dream Cruise last? The cruise is just one day!

  • Anyone not driving a classic/muscle car are asked to stay out of the two right lanes nearest to the curb.

What time is the Woodward Dream Cruise?  9 am to 9 pm.  BUT many people with show cars in the static car shows begin to leave parked shows (as they want to cruise) around 3:30 pm so I recommend hitting up the shows in the morning.

Are Their Bathrooms?   In the more populated areas, especially in Royal Oak, there are porta johns along Woodward Avenue.

Is it Safe To Attend?   As with any large city, don't leave your items unattended. Make sure your bags/purses are zipped and closed. There is a very large police presence at the show and we felt comfortable.  We recommend going as it is a great family event!

Is This Your First Time at the Woodward Dream Cruise?

If it’s your first time to the show , we recommend finding a spot somewhere between Royal Oak and Birmingham as this stretch gets the most traffic and excitement.

We recommend arriving early so you can find parking off Woodward Avenue before the side streets and lots are full.

We recommend bringing:

  • Ear plugs if you are noise sensitive (especially for young children)
  • Folding chairs with umbrellas
  • Water/non-alcoholic drinks
  • TP (in case the porta johns are out)

History of the Woodward Dream Cruise

Woodward Dream Cruise was dreamed up as a small fundraiser to raise money for a soccer field in Ferndale, Michigan. Then, in August 1995, a group of people wished to relive the fun of the 50's and 60's, when music and Motor City steel roared down Woodward Avenue.  Blowing away expectations, the event drew 250,000 people!

Now, the Woodward Dream Cruise is the World’s Largest One-Day Automotive Event!

The Cruise brings about 1.5 million people and 40,000 classic cars to the area each summer.

People travel from all over the world to attend and be in the show.  It's an incredible experience!

My friend Marcy highly recommends eating at Sylvan Table which we will try this year. It is a farm-to-table restaurant. The restaurant is in a few hundred year old barn they moved from the east coast and built a farm around it. Cool, huh!

  • Other restaurant ideas that come highly recommended from locals include the Latin restaurant Freya and The Apparatus Room.

Are There Bathrooms at the Woodward Dream Cruise?

There are lots of porta johns along Woodward Ave in the more populated areas. Memorial Park in Royal Oak has a large bank of porta johns for the classic car show.

Are There Food Trucks or Places to Eat at Woodward Dream Cruise?

Motown Bistro and food trucks lining Woodward Ave in Detroit

Absolutely! There are food trucks and vendors lining Woodward avenue in the more populated areas, especially Royal Oak and Ferndale. There are also lots of great restaurants along Woodward Avenue.

We enjoy eating at Brown Iron Brewhouse in Royal Oak .

  • Chris was eyeing the Brown Iron Burger with Wagyu Beef, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese and a yummy caramelized onion spread but got the Slow Smoke BBQ Pork sandwich with yummy pickles!
  • I got the Cali salmon BLT with avocado crema...be sure to order extra crema, it's yummy!

Your guide to the 2023 woodward dream cruise: what you need to know, dream cruise takes place each year on the third saturday in august.

Ken Haddad , Digital Managing Editor

DETROIT – The 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise is Saturday, August 19. Here’s everything you need to know.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is the world’s largest one-day celebration of classic car culture that attracts over 1 million visitors, and more than 40,000 muscle cars, street rods, custom, collector and special interest vehicles.

Recommended Videos

The Woodward Dream Cruise takes place each year on the third Saturday in August, and runs between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

What is the Dream Cruise?

In August 1995, Nelson House and a group of volunteers looked to relive and recreate the nostalgic heydays of the 50s and 60s, when youth, music and Motor City steel roamed Woodward Avenue, America’s first highway.

That year, 250,000 people participated—nearly ten times the number expected. The rest, as they say, is history.

Where is the Dream Cruise route?

The Woodward Dream Cruise spans much of the avenue: classic vehicle drivers cruise through nine participating communities (Pontiac, Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, Royal Oak, Berkley, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge and Ferndale) in Oakland County, Michigan. Spectators and cruisers travel to Metro Detroit, the birthplace of the American automobile, to participate in an event that celebrates all things automotive.

How much does it cost?

There are no fees to cruise in the event or to watch. Anyone can participate although, those not driving a classic car are asked to stay out of the two right lanes nearest to the curb.

Where do folks park?

The Woodward Dream Cruise is a spectacular experience to drive, or, merely watch and marvel from the sidelines. Public parking is available along or near the cruise route.

Public safety info

The Woodward Dream Cruise is an alcohol-free, family-oriented event. As public safety is paramount, cruisers are asked to obey all rules of the road.

Police departments from each community patrol on foot, horseback and vehicles during the Cruise to ensure a safe and family-friendly environment for everyone. A team of amateur radio operators also serve as additional “eyes and ears” of law enforcement officials along the Cruise route.

M1 Concourse Celebrates 60th Anniversary of World’s First Muscle Car

dream cruise woodward

The Pontiac GTO, the first American muscle car, will take over the Woodward Dream Show (not to be confused with the Woodward Dream Cruise ) in August to celebrate its 60th anniversary with car enthusiasts and the public alike. The anniversary celebration will bring together an exhibition of 64 GTOs and more than 650 hot rods, custom cars, cruisers, and muscle cars.

The Pontiac GTO is known for its unmistakable rumble of a V-8 engine, fire-spitting double exhausts, and ability to go from zero to 60 mph in under six seconds. The GTO, nicknamed the “Goat,” the “Tiger,” and “The Great One,” is said to have led to a generation built on performance and speed, setting Detroit’s muscle car culture in motion.

According to Motor Trend , the GTO was created after Pontiac experienced great success in the NASCAR Grand National Series in 1961 and 1962, just as baby boomers were reaching the driving age and needed wheels. Pontiac’s division head, John DeLorean, saw the need and over 32,000 GTOs passed through dealerships in its first year.

The 60th anniversary celebration of this Detroit innovation will kick off the Woodward Dream Show and Parade on the third weekend in August.

“We’re going to have 64 Pontiac GTOs from across the country come together on the plaza at our event center,” said M1 Concourse CEO Tim McGrane in a press release. “It will be among the largest gatherings of GTOs in the United States and a must-see way to start Dream Cruise weekend at our Woodward Dream Show.”

Tickets to the GTO anniversary celebration include access to rare and unique cars, People’s Choice Awards voting, parking, local food and drinks, live music, entertainment, and more. General admission tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for children. Kids six and under are free. VIP tickets, which include on-site parking, catered food and drink, and second-level views, are $160 each.

Eat from local food trucks like Green Lantern , Union 212 , Chick-A-Dee , Batter Up , and Sucree . There will also be ‘60s-themed live music and a family-friendly zone for the kids. Tickets also include access to the Insiders’ Garage Symposium, a panel of local and regional leaders discussing cars, car builds, and more.

The Woodward Dream Cruise, on Aug. 17, is metro Detroit’s biggest automotive event. The parade celebrates car culture, bringing thousands of custom collector and special interest vehicles to Woodward Avenue. The cruise spans nine communities from Ferndale to Pontiac, many of which are also hosting their own community events throughout the weekend.

M1 Concourse is a premiere automotive and entertainment venue. The 87-acre property holds a 28,000-square-foot event complex, a 1.5-mile closed track, 255 private garages, and a full schedule of events. The M1 Concourse also hosts the American Speed Festival, Cars and Coffee, Cars Under the Stars, and other automotive festivals.

“We invite everyone to join us for this unique opportunity to take part in a historic event that honors the region’s automotive legacy,” McGrane said in a press release. “It’s a day of cars, community, and culture and it all starts at M1.”

Reckless early cruiser flees Royal Oak police at high speeds; 2 flat tires finally end chase

A pr. 23—Two days after a Chesterfield Township teen led police on a high-octane chase along Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak residents complained to the City Commission on Monday about the noise, aggravation and potential dangers that early cruisers bring to the community.

None of the residents, however, mentioned the incident involving the suspect arrested Saturday evening. Police put out a statement on the chase Monday evening.

The epicenter for early cruisers, and the Woodward Dream Cruise in August, is 13 Mile and Woodward.

At 7:35 p.m. Saturday, a Royal Oak officer monitoring early cruisers spotted the suspect, 17, driving recklessly on Woodward in that area, police said.

The suspect was driving a white Chrysler 300 with a female passenger, 19.

"The officer activated his lights and attempted to stop the vehicle," Royal Oak police Lt. Richard Millard said in a statement, "but the driver disregarded the signal to pull over and fled away from the officer at a high rate of speed."

The teen changed directions several times on Woodward as police chased him and headed north of 14 Mile Road into Birmingham.

Birmingham police successfully deployed a tire deflation device near Lincoln Street in their city that flattened the two passenger side tires on the souped-up Chrysler.

Still, the suspect drove more than another mile on the flat tires, weaving through a residential neighborhood before heading south on Woodward, police said.

Police said they arrested him when he finally stopped near Woodward and Normandy Road. The passenger was released and no one was injured.

Police said the suspect is being held at Children's Village, a county detention center for juvenile offenders.

He faces a charge of third-degree fleeing and eluding, a five-year felony, and his case is being handled in juvenile court.

"We have officers patrolling Woodward," Millard said Tuesday. "Anytime the weather cooperates in the spring we have more people cruising Woodward."

Early cruisers typically congregate in business parking lots along the highway when they take a break from the road. Police for over a decade have tried to control them and in the past have issued trespassing tickets to those who crowd in parking lots in cooperation with business owners who object to cruisers being in their lots.

Mayor Michael Fournier said that because of Woodward is a highway state law prohibits police from writing civil infraction tickets for early cruisers gathering unless police have an agreement with business owners who own the lots. A local noise ordinance was used to issue noise violations, but the city got sued over the issue and lost in court, he said.

Ticketing can only be done "within what the state statute allows us to do," Fournier said.

Several Royal Oak residents who live within hearing distance of Woodward complained to the City Commission on Monday.

"It's decreasing the quality of my life," said Becky Valenti who lives a few blocks from Woodward. "I can't sit or work in my backyard without being frustrated because of the noise on Woodward ... We're going to have to move because it's so loud."

Fournier said city officials have been petitioning the city's representatives in Lansing to change state law so Royal Oak, and other nearby cities, can have a legal means of controlling early cruisers.

"I don't want you to think we're just twiddling our thumbs," Fournier said. "We're pushing the boundaries of what we can do."

Lisa Carnegie is another resident weary of the noise of loud engines. She said she realized the city and police were doing everything they can to limit the noise nuisance.

"But we need to do more," Carnegie said. "I don't know what it's going to take. A catastrophe where someone is killed?"

72 Fun & Unusual Things to Do in Moscow

fun things to do in Moscow

  • 0 Pinterest

Sure, Moscow is the Russian political capital and the nation’s most populous city, but describing it as such couldn’t be any further from the truth. More accurately, Moscow is a city of contrasts.

It exudes history — its Kremlin dates back centuries, nodding to royalty and leadership old and now, while the famed Red Square, the poster child of the city, blends striking color with ancient tradition and religion.

On the other hand, it’s a city of modern pop culture and towering skyscrapers; a place where you’ll come across new-age museums, arts centers, manmade parks, and an efficient transportation system that’s one of the most beautiful in Europe.

It’s a city of longstanding culture — the Bolshoi Theater is an international symbol for excellence in classical dance, while Russia’s National Ballet Company remains renowned worldwide — as well as upbeat nightlife, with some of the world’s most celebrated rooftop bars and nightclubs.

While it’s a city filled with opposites, there remains no shortage of things to do in Moscow for all types of travelers — from those who want cultural immersion to those looking for an epic night out, you’ll be spoiled for choice. And if you’re not sure where to start, here’s a list of suggestions!

The Moscow Kremlin

If there’s any particular district begging to be the first place you visit on your trip, it’s the Kremlin.

Built in the 16th century by Ivan the Terrible, the UNESCO-listed area has since become the heart of Russia’s capital city, where you’ll find several churches, palaces, and other noteworthy buildings.

We’ll dive into each of its main attractions in a second, but regardless of what you visit, try to make it to the Kremlin in time for sunset — because seeing its golden domes glinting in the late-afternoon light makes for one spectacular tourist photo!

1 – Admire the abundance of Kremlin towers | the Kremlin

Kremlin towers, Moscow

As your eyes dart down the towering red-brick Kremlin wall, the first thing you’ll notice is its large towers of all different styles and sizes.

With a whopping 20 separate minarets towering above the historic area, each with its own name, colors, features and history, a guided tour to learn each of their fascinating stories is a must.

To give you a little taste, the Konstantin-Yeleninskaya Tower once housed a torture chamber. Saviour’s Tower at the main entrance boasts a famous chiming clock, the Secret Tower houses a secret escape tunnel, and the Trinity Tower is the tallest of them all.

2 – Visit the enormous Grand Kremlin Palace | the Kremlin

Grand Kremlin Palace, Moscow

A remarkable attraction in terms of both beauty and history, the Grand Kremlin Palace is an ornate rococo-style building that was commissioned during the reign of Nicholas I, and today acts as the official residence of none other than the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.

Perched atop Borovitsky Hill, its 125-meter-long facade is unmissable, making for impressive photos.

Take note: guided tours are few and far between, so you’ll have to book a few weeks in advance if you want to check out the decorated inner sanctum.

3 – People-watch in Cathedral Square | the Kremlin

Cathedral Square, Moscow

One of the most popular areas in all of Moscow (sometimes called Sobornaya Square), with multiple massive churches at its heart, Cathedral Square is flanked by several historic buildings and is never shy of a tourist crowd.

The three main churches — each spectacular works of architecture in their own right — are the Cathedral of the Assumption (the oldest and the biggest of all Kremlin churches), the 16th-century Cathedral of the Archangel Michael (known for its beautiful Corinthian gables and turrets), and the golden-domed Cathedral of the Annunciation (which connects to the Grand Kremlin Palace’s main building).

Throw in the 60-meter-high Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the lesser-known Church of the Twelve Apostles , the Church of the Deposition of the Virgin’s Robe (underrated yet famous for its marvelous stained-glass windows), and the medieval residence-turned-museum that is The Patriarch’s Palace, and you can see why this square is regularly number one on any visitor’s list of things to do in Moscow.

4 – See a show at the State Kremlin Palace | the Kremlin

State Kremlin Palace, Moscow

Just like the Grand Kremlin Palace , this theater and prestigious concert hall — with its grandiose facade and multiple sculptures — is another ornate building that’s worth admiring.

A popular place to hold conferences, the State Kremlin Palace was originally built as part of a larger complex for Communist Party meetings, but today hosts some of the biggest events in Moscow — we’re talkin’ sold-old ballet performances, world-famous concerts, opera shows, and festivals.

Check the website to see what’s on the calendar for your visit!

5 – See centuries worth of national treasures at the Armoury Chamber | the Kremlin

Armoury Chamber, Moscow

For anyone with an interest in historical weaponry and armor, this museum — which dates back to the early 1500s when it was created as the royal armory — is a must-see.

The Armoury Chamber (as well as the Diamond Fund Exhibition) is home to some of the most valuable objects that were originally owned by Russian monarchs — from jeweled heirlooms and intricate boxes to ornately decorated pistols and swords — many of which are centuries old.

Within the armoury chamber, you’ll also find the Russian historical regalia, a collection of artifacts that belonged to Russian tsars and emperors between the 13th and 20th centuries, highlighted by the Ivory Throne and the Monomakh’s Cap.

  • Armoury Chamber tours

6 – Step inside the Palace of the Facets | the Kremlin

Palace of the Facets, Moscow

The Palace of the Facets is one of the most underrated buildings in all of Moscow, largely because it’s not as widely promoted or photographed even though its exterior adorns some postcards.

From the outside, it blends in with the crowd. But step inside and you’ll discover a world of beauty and wonder — its frescoes, golden columns and enormous rooms are a sight to behold

The Palace of the Facets is not only a piece of art (literally, with painted walls), dating back over 500 years, but also acted as the dining hall for the Tsars.

7 – Feel small next to the Tsar Bell | the Kremlin

Tsar Bell, Moscow

Making Philadelphia’s famous Liberty Bell look diminutive in size, this monument , which never actually functioned as a bell due to its immense size (at 205 tons and standing 20.1 feet high!), has found fame in recent years for being the heaviest attraction inside The Kremlin.

With the bronze landmark’s claim to fame of being the biggest bell in the world, it presents as a great, quick photo op when roaming through the Kremlin.

8 – Check out the Senate Palace | the Kremlin

Senate Palace, Moscow

Another architectural masterpiece that’s tucked away within the Kremlin, this palace is famous for being one of Moscow’s most beautiful buildings — its yellow façade curves around to face inward and truly engulf anyone who stands near it.

Built back in the late 1700s, today it houses the Russian presidential administration and, unfortunately for us, is off limits to the general public.

Still, admiring it from outside, with the nearby Tsar Cannon, is certainly good enough.

9 – Grab a photo in front of the Tsar Cannon | the Kremlin

Tsar Cannon, Moscow

One of Moscow’s most iconic symbols, Tsar Cannon (or Royal Cannon) is a cannon that was manufactured in 1586 and resides — yep, you guessed it — within The Kremlin.

Following the theme of the enormous Tsar Bell, it weighs a whopping 39 tons — making it one of the world’s largest cannons even though it has never been shot.

And while its size may be impressive on its own, what makes this cannon so special is that it’s adorned with intricate carvings, ornaments, inscriptions, and a figure of a horse-riding Tsar Feodor the Bellringer.

  • walking tours in Moscow

10 – Join a tour of the Terem Palace | the Kremlin

Terem Palace, Moscow

A stunning, fairytale-like palace that’s steeped in history and detail, the five-story Terem Palace is one of the most underrated attractions within The Kremlin. However, as part of the official residence of the Russian President, much of it is off-limits to snap-happy tourists.

That said, there’s still plenty to be seen in the accessible areas by joining a group tour: a beautiful white-stone carved staircase; curved, decorated, and painted ceilings; and an enchanting low-vaulted Antechamber with lancet windows.

The Red Square

As we move away from the Kremlin, our next stop is the most photographed, picturesque public area in the country.

Flanked by gorgeous, colorful towers and buildings, the Red Square is the most famous square in all of Russia — and one that’s steeped in history, patriotism, and communist symbolism.

Home to some of Moscow’s greatest landmarks including St Basil’s Cathedral (featuring its iconic onion domes), Lenin Mausoleum, GUM department store (an architectural masterpiece that is the most famous shopping mall in Russia), The State History Museum, and more, it’s not just a sight to see in Moscow but also one that has been seen by hundreds of millions from around the world.

11 – Make your way inside St. Basil’s Cathedral | Red Square

St. Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow

Built back in the early 1500s, this quirky-looking, 65-meter-tall Orthodox church is so unique and detailed that it’s earned its place as one of 16 UNESCO cultural sites in Russia — and, thanks to many Hollywood productions like Bond: Skyfall (2012), has only continued to increase in fame.

Its exterior boasts multi-colored domes crowned with golden onion top spires. Meanwhile, inside, you’ll find nine small, separate chapels, and plenty of decorated walls and windows — all best viewed as part of a walking tour of Red Square.

  • Red Square tours in Moscow

12 – Visit the State Historical Museum | Red Square

State Historical Museum, Moscow

One of seven museums that can be found around the expansive Red Square, the State Historical Museum is one of Moscow’s most revered.

Housed in a neoclassical building (the same as GUM), it features more than 4 million items relating to Russian history — making it so vast and incredible that you’ll need at least two hours inside to see just a fraction.

While you’re in the area, be sure to check out the Marshal Georgy Zhukov Monument, a towering horse-riding statue of arguably the most famous and heroic Soviet military commander of WWII, which can be found in front of the museum.

13 – Shop till you drop at GUM | Red Square

GUM department store, Moscow

The official state department store of Russia, having opened in 1893 and become one of Moscow’s most iconic attractions for shopaholics over the years, is known for its gorgeous architecture that looks more like a palace than anything else.

Entering through its massive golden doors, you’ll be surprised to find an extensive shopping center with more than 100 luxury and world-renowned brands of clothing and accessories for men, women, and youngsters.

Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, stop into the Gastronom №1 for a bite to eat or take a stroll through its corridors to appreciate the building’s history and beauty.

14 – Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum | Red Square

Lenin's Mausoleum, Moscow

Another iconic Red Square attraction is Lenin’s Mausoleum, a small yet foreboding building that houses the embalmed corpse of Communist leader Vladimir Lenin (who led Russia through the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917).

Opened in 1930 after his death and standing at more than 12 meters tall, it presents as both a unique and macabre site — and, considering the life-like nature of the body, certainly isn’t for the faint of heart.

Note: Entrance is free of charge, but expect to be searched by security before being allowed in.

15 – Ride the Moscow Metro, enjoying the beautiful stations along the way

Moscow Metro, Russia

As we leave the Red Square, the next cab off the rank is Moscow’s unbelievable artistic Metro network (rivaled only in beauty by that of Stockholm). Constructed between the 1930s and 1950s, its stations were built by hand with a wide range of artistic themes — from socialist realist to Slavic pagan.

Tips: The best way to experience them is as part of a Moscow Metro tour, which can be booked online. However, if you prefer exploring solo, then make sure to visit the Mayakovskaya Metro Station which is known for its seemingly endless archways.

You may also check out Dostoyevskaya, named after a famous writer with murals depicting his stories. The Ploshchad Revolutsii Metro Station is another option where a handful of Socialist statues provide a wonderful contrast to the red marble arches.

16 – Spend the afternoon exploring the State Tretyakov Gallery

State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow

Boasting the reputation of being one of the world’s leading art museums, the State Tretyakov Gallery is home to a stunning collection that features well over 100,000 works from Russia and around the globe.

Featuring everything from ancient Russian icons to Soviet-era artifacts and contemporary pieces, the museum also houses a charming green garden perfect for recharging.

Visitors are advised to allocate at least three hours inside to properly appreciate everything on show — or consider booking a private VIP tour to skip the lines and focus on the best sections.

17 – Get out of town to the Tsaritsyno Museum & Nature Reserve

Tsaritsyno Museum & Nature Reserve, Moscow

Located a short drive from the hustle and bustle of the Red Square, this incredible attraction is both a palatial museum and cultural center, with an enchanting open-air garden to boot — spread across 405 hectares altogether.

Boasting beautiful 18th-century baroque architecture, it was originally built as a country retreat for Catherine the Great. However, it has since been transformed into an outdoor museum with several museums inside — including exhibits dedicated to Russian history and culture.

18 – Tick off the main haunts with a hop-on hop-off bus ride

bus tours in Moscow

Short on time or just can’t be bothered walking around anymore? Then make sure to check out the double-decker Hop-on-Hop-off Bus, a convenient and cheap way of seeing all the main attractions in one go.

With unlimited-ride tickets lasting between 24 and 72 hours, there’s plenty of flexibility to soak in must-see areas like Red Square, the Kremlin, Arbatskaya Square, Theatre Square, and the Red October neighborhood — and with a free audio tour (in English) throughout the ride, you’re sure to learn a thing or two as well.

Busses usually run every 15 minutes, with the full city loop taking roughly an hour — of course, you can disembark and reboard to your heart’s content.

19 – Learn about military history on Poklonnaya Hill

Poklonnaya Hill, Moscow

For an up-close and personal experience with the past, make sure to check out Poklonnaya Hill — a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 20 minutes out from the city center that’s home to several relics from Russia’s pre-revolutionary era.

It has everything from Great Patriotic War memorials dedicated to fallen soldiers of the Russian military forces, to the Eternal Flame and the Museum of Great Patriotic War. This is an unmissable opportunity for history buffs.

Hot tip: While you’re in the area, be sure to stop into the Victory Museum (the nation’s biggest military history museum) and check out the gold-tipped Church of St. George the Victorious .

20 – Get artsy at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts

Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow

Home to one of the finest and most significant art collections in Russia, the highly-regarded Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts showcases everything from medieval icons and paintings. With over 500,000 pieces of works by renowned artists like Rembrandt, Renoir, Picasso, Matisse, Karl Bryullov and Rubens, the museum is undeniably one of the best things to do in Moscow for art lovers.

The museum also houses impressive exhibits dedicated to ancient Greece, archaeological collections, decorative arts and a 200,000-item Numismatic library.

21 – Take a charming stroll down Arbat Street
