Here is a list of highly-recommended tourist spots and activities that you shouldn’t miss when in Virac, Catanduanes.

Maribina Falls is the most popular and most accessible waterfall from Virac’s town proper. Its name is the combination of the two barangays where the waterfall is located: Barangays Marinawa and Binanwahan.

The falls is 10 kilometers from Virac town proper. The water from the falls cascades down the mountain into a series of pools that you can wade into.

Binurong Point of Catanduanes

Binurong Point in Baras town is a place that offers equally jaw-dropping views of the open ocean crashing against rocks.

Be prepared for a bit of a hike as you will be passing forest trails, hiking up former pasturelands, skipping through boulders, and walking on narrow paths. But the view from the top of the cliff. especially during sunrise, will be worth the hike.

Other viewpoints near Virac that are also worth visiting are the Balacay Point, and the PAGASA Weather Radar Station.

White sand beaches of Catanduanes

Its simple beauty will seduce you into taking a dip in the water or lie down on the sand to get the perfect tan. On a clear day, you can even spot Mayon Volcano in Legazpi, Albay from Marilima Beach.

There is also a small fishing community near Marilima Beach, so expect to see small fishing boats dotting the coast.

Right next to Marilima Beach is the small, but no less stunning Batag Beach. Its powdery white sand beach is bordered by coconut trees. Behind the trees are small hills that are similar to Bohol ’s Chocolate Hills.

It is said that on a clear day, you can see Mayon Volcano in Albay and Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon from the shores of Batag. Lounge, swim, and have fun with your friends and family while in Batag Beach.

Standing tall since the 1800s, St. John the Baptist Church, more commonly known as the Bato Church, is the oldest church on the island. It’s one of the most preserved tourist spots in the province due to its cultural importance.

The church is a simple, freestanding two-story structure made from coral stones. To get to Bato Church, you can take a 20-minute jeepney or tricycle ride from Virac to Bato.

According to local legend, Nahulugan Falls is named after a farmer and his carabao who fell while crossing the hilltop. Water then began to cascade from where the farmer and his loyal companion fell.

No matter what its real origins are, the Nahulugan Falls is a majestic wonder of nature. Getting to the beautiful three-tiered Nahulugan Falls in Gigmoto is like unwrapping a precious present.

The falls are surrounded by lush forests that filter the sunlight, giving the whole area a secret, magical aura.

Right within Virac is the equally beautiful Mamangal Beach. The beach is lined with trees where you can set up your sarong and lie down on the shaded sandy shore.

At low tide, you can easily see various seagrass in between wave-combed cream sand. Scuba divers can also take the plunge to see marine life off the coast of Mamangal Beach. It is just about 3 kilometers south of Amenia Beach.

Located in the neighboring town of San Andres is Amenia Beach, a long stretch of cream-colored sand and shallow waters that is safe for kids to swim in. At low tide, you can see wave-combed sand that stretches for miles.

If you want to feel as if you have a whole stretch of unspoiled beach all to yourself, head over to Balite Beach.

Locked in between a small fishing village and a mangrove forest, this beach is a hidden gem practically devoid of visitors.

It is also lined with trees along the shore, so you can watch the waves under the shade or while you mingle with the locals.

Also known as the Virac Cathedral, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception has beautiful stained-glass windows surrounding its walls. The church is a reminder of the religious heritage of the province.

Inside the cathedral, the ceiling has been remodeled and patterned to look like the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.  Virac Cathedral is located along Rizal Avenue at the center of town.

11. See the Jesus’ Face Rock at Talisoy Beach

Top 14 Catanduanes Tourist Spots: Beaches & Stunning Views in Virac and Nearby

Located in a small cove a few minutes from Virac town proper is the clean and well-kept Talisoy Beach, also known to locals as Jesus’ Face Beach because of the unique rock formation that is said to look like the face of Jesus Christ.

Beyond this unique feature, you can also go sunbathing on the fine white sand beach or swim in the cove’s clear, calm waters. The seabed is a little rocky, so make sure you wear aqua shoes if you want to take a dip.

You can rent a nipa cottage near the beach if you plan to stay in the area for the day.

Igang Beach is a popular spot for surf boarding and windsurfing. It’s also called the Twin Rock Beach because of the huge rock formations that are located on both ends of the beach.

Because the waters of this beach run quite deep, swimming is prohibited in most areas, though there is a deep pool near the rock formations that has become a popular diving spot for tourists.

Located at Igang Beach is the Twin Rock Beach Resort, so you can book your accommodations there before you explore the other beaches around Virac.

If you’re a fan of heritage, make sure to visit Museo de Catanduanes. The museum displays artifacts and memorabilia that tells the story of the province’s rich heritage and culture.

The museum is on the second and third floors of the old capitol building at Virac town proper and is open on weekdays. It is quite near food establishments too so you can grab a bite after visiting the museum.

A place for reverence and worship, this cave-inspired chapel at Cavinitan's Fiat House is a popular attraction not only for its devotees, but for travelers as well. Its floors and walls emulate the caves, with light from the altar illuminating the whole chapel. You'll feel the peace and quiet once you enter Fiat House.

Take a break from beach-hopping and spend a few minutes in quiet contemplation at this unique chapel that was made to look like a cave. Pray and contemplate while inside and enjoy the solemnity it brings.

20 Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Catanduanes (Rolling Hills, Beaches & More)

 alt=

I had a realization a few years ago when I visited Catanduanes: it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and underrated provinces in the Philippines.

Often referred to as the “Happy Island,” Catanduanes boasts breathtaking nature, pristine beaches, stunning landscapes, and warm-hearted locals. In earlier times, the province was called the “Land of the Howling Winds.” Situated off the coast of the Bicol region and facing the Pacific Ocean, it’s a common path for typhoons, hence the historical name.

However, the residents, known as Catandunganons, aspire for their home to be recognized for more than just its weather challenges. With its verdant rolling hills, untouched beaches, and rich natural beauty, Catanduanes is a destination worth exploring, and I was fortunate to experience its charm.

Here are some reasons why you should consider a visit to this island. Below is a list of the top tourist spots we explored during our trip to the Happy Island.

1. Batag Beach

During our first day in Catanduanes, we explored the capital town of Virac. I felt that touring Virac is already enough for our Catanduanes trip. We get the comforts of living in a small city and yet it’s also very close to nature and beaches!

After exploring the downtown area, we traveled for a few minutes to the coastal area until reaching Batag beach. It’s a stretch of cream-colored beach perfect for relaxation that we all, city dwellers, badly needed.

Batag Beach Catanduanes

That’s Mt. Mayon.

At the end of the pristine beach, there is a rock formation suitable for more adventurous travelers. This spot is just perfect for those Instagrammable photos too! You can never go wrong with a backdrop of nature, right?

After exploring the beach, we rested in one of the cottages. Batag Beach is open to the public, so there’s no entrance fee. However, if you’re with family and friends, you can rent one of the cottages for a minimal fee of 250 pesos.

2. Talisoy Beach

After enjoying the pristine beauty of Batag Beach, we traveled for less than five minutes to Talisoy Beach.

This beach piqued my curiosity. It is located in a small cove, surrounded by lush greenery and rock formations. Although it’s open to the public, it retains a sense of seclusion and privacy, which people living in big cities will appreciate.

There’s a part of the beach that serves as a turtle sanctuary. How wonderful is that, right? It’s heartening to see people exert such tremendous effort to protect marine species and our environment.

Talisoy Beach

As we walked along the beach, we noticed something on the rock formation. The edge of it resembles a replica of Jesus’ face. In the Philippines where the majority are Catholics, this holds significant meaning. This resemblance is why Talisoy Beach is sometimes referred to as Jesus Face Beach.

3. Twin Rock Beach / Igang Beach

After the beach-hopping, we had our lunch at Twin Rock Beach Resort, located in the capital of Virac. The locals also call this Igang Beach.

They served us some of the most delicious Bicolano dishes, and also my personal favorites like Laing and Bicol Express . We enjoyed our lunch while looking at the relaxing views of the beach and the famous twin rocks from afar.

Twin Rock Beach

It’s impossible not to notice the stunning rock formations just a few meters off the shore. The two islets are the main attractions from where the owners got the inspiration for the resort’s name.

Overall, it was a calm and relaxing experience overlooking the pristine beach with creamy white sand. Twin Rock resort is also one of the most developed resorts on the island, so you know what to do once you visit Catandaunes.

4. Summit View Park

You can witness an awesome sea of clouds in Catanduanes without strenuous hiking. Yes, you just have to travel for about an hour from Virac going to the municipality of Viga . Upon entering the town, you’ll witness the famous Summit View Park.

Summit View Park

Just climb the stairs for a few steps and you will experience the stunning sea of clouds. We went there early in the morning just to witness the breathtaking view. The best part of our experience is when the local officials and the Catanduanes tourism office prepared breakfast at the summit. It was definitely one of my most memorable experiences in Catanduanes.

So if you happen to be on the island, travel to Viga and witness the beauty of the town.

5. Lolong Point Lighthouse

After breakfast, we went straight to the municipality of Panganiban for more adventures. A boat was waiting for us to take us to explore Panay island. It’s an island off the coast f the province’s eastern part.

We traveled for about 30 minutes by boat until we reached the tip part of the island. A lighthouse was visible as we sailed closer to the shore. This is Lolong Point Lighthouse.

Lolong Point Lighthouse Catanduanes

Lolong Point Lighthouse

Lolong Point Lighthouse Catanduanes

Siempre, papahuli paba naman ako? siempre kailangan ng selfie. LOL!

The beach itself is also a beauty of its own. They call it Kumagat Beach. The Panganiban tourism office prepared a brunch for us. It’s a type of kakanin with sauce. It was delicious. We stayed for a few minutes relaxing by the beach until it was time for us to hike a little to visit Lolong Point Lighthouse.

It was just a few minutes of hiking but the sun was unforgiving so be prepared just in case. Don’t forget your sunscreen , okay?

But once we arrived at the lighthouse, it was all worth it. We witnessed a 360-degree view of the entire island and the Pacific ocean. It was a perfect chance for picture taking or simply savoring the calm and relaxing vibe of the ocean. If you want to visit Lolong Point Lighthouse, it’s much better to coordinate with the Municipal Tourism Office.

6. Museo de Catanduanes

When you’re in the capital town of Catanduanes, allot some time to check out Museo de Catanduanes. We had a chance to visit the museum during our 5-day trip in the province. This is located in the same building where the Tourism office is located.

Museo de Catanduanes

The museum features some old artifacts, memorabilia, and also products made from Catanduanes, especially Abaca. It’s nice to know more about Catanduanes’ history and heritage before even exploring it. It will give the right knowledge and perspective about the Catandunganons.

7. Palestina Rolling Hills

We had our lunch on a floating cottage, feasting on some delicious dishes like humba and lots of seafood.

After that, the local tourism office of Bagamanoc arrived and brought us to another awesome tourist destination in the province. We traveled for a few minutes by boat then hiked for another 15 minutes going on top of the hills.

caramoran catanduanes tourist spot

Once we arrived at the summit, we were welcomed by an awesome view of rolling hills, nature, and the blue ocean. “This is Palestina Rolling Hills”, the Catanduanes Tourism staff said.

Looking below these rolling hills are stunning and pristine beaches. One of these is Tabing beach which also has a mini cave that can serve as protection from the scorching heat of the sun.

8. Loran Beach

After enjoying Catanduances’ rolling hills, what a great way to end the day relaxing on an untouched beach. Before heading to the mainland, we made a side trip to Loran beach located on the other side of Panay Island.

Loran Beach

Aside from the beach, a few steps away and you can visit the old Loran station, a former US coastguard complex in the 50s and 60s located on top of a hill in Bagamanoc . This was once a site for crews of the US Coast Guard providing American submarines and ships with a lower frequency for long-range navigation. Now, it’s just an abandoned structure, but a nice way to get a glimpse of the place’s history.

9. Boto ni Kurakog

Off the coast of Bagamanoc, you’ll witness an interesting rock formation. And when you get the chance to get closer to it when you ride a boat, you’d realize that it looks like a male genital. Haha, The locals call this Boto ni Kurakog. Boto is a Bicolano word for penis and Kurakog? You might be asking who is he.

Boto ni Kurakog 2

Is this looks familiar to you? LOL

Well, legend has it that Kurakog was a giant who fell in love with a mortal. Since the woman’s parents were against it, she committed suicide which made him really depressed. He eventually died and part of his intimate body appeared in the middle of the sea which is now known as Boto ni Kurakog. There are many versions of this story, so don’t be surprised if you hear a slightly different one.

10. Paday Falls

Paday Falls is just one of the many awesome waterfalls in the province. Located in Brgy. Basak in Bagamanoc, it is a popular hangout for many tourists and even locals because of its close easy access to the main road. You don’t need any strenuous hike, unlike other waterfalls in the country.

Paday Falls

A few minutes of land travel to Bagamanoc proper, then a 5-minute walk, and you’ll arrive at Paday Falls. There are cottages that you rent for a minimal fee. Just enjoying the view of the waterfalls is already a relaxing experience, what more if you decide to take a dip in its cold water? This is highly recommended when you visit the town of Bagamanoc.

11. Sakahon Beach

Early in the morning, we traveled all the way to the town of Bato to visit a beach. Locals call it Sakahon beach. Aside from the nature and pristine beach, the best part is the warm welcome from the local officials. They even prepared a breakfast filled with local delicacies!

It was delicious and so filling, enough to give us energy throughout the day.

Sakahon Beach

This is delicious.

Catanduanes Delicacy

We then explored Sakahon Beach. No wonder more and more beachgoers enjoy this piece of nature. It’s peaceful and uncrowded. It has clear water and fine sand too.

I would love to spend more time there, but we still have to go to Baras, our next destination.

12. Binurong Point

Binurong Point is the most popular Catanduanes tourist spot on social media with all its stunning rolling hills and landscapes. Some are even saying that this is the Batanes of Bicol, but you know Binurong Point is a beauty of its own.

Binurong point

Once we arrived at the registration area, we hiked for about 30 minutes going to Binurong Point. A guide is required to ensure the safety of the group. It’s also an income opportunity for many locals in the area. We were quite surprised that the guide assigned to us was a woman, a mother. It’s my bad that I forgot her name but we had a nice photo together. She was a nice and helpful guide, trying to earn a living for her family and help her husband who is a fisherman.

Well, once we arrived at Binurong Point, I was speechless for a while. I was just silently staring at this glorious beauty of nature. When you’re in Binurong Point, all you’d do is just enjoy the beauty in front of you. Sometimes, you get to stare at some cows, but most of the time, you’d just enjoy the calmness and serenity that this palace brings.

13. Puraran Beach

After our hike to Binurong Point, we then traveled to experience another beach. This time it’s a surfing destination, the popular Puraran Beach.

But before that, we first made a quick stopover at Alon Surf Stay to have a quick brunch. We witnessed the stunning view of the Puraran beach from the resort. It was also nice of them to treat us to sweet and tasty pancakes.

Alon Surf Stay

The view from Alon Surf Stay.

Puraran Beach

Then, it was time to explore Puraran beach. It was obvious why this is a popular surfing spot. The sound of strong waves crashing through the shore was the dominant sound in the area. What a perfect way to chill at the cottages while enjoying the breeze from the ocean.

We had a seafood-packed lunch too. Delicious!

14. Hiyop Highlands

On our last day in Catanduanes, we traveled for less than an hour from Virac to experience another rolling hills. This is Hiyop Highlands located in Pandan, the northern part of Catanduanes.

Hiyop Highlands

Once we arrived, there were fences all over the place, an indication that the majority are actually private property. But we were able to find a good spot to enter and even enjoy the hills and the view.

At the end of the cliff is a stunning view of the beach below. Oh man, with so many beautiful places that we explored in Catanduanes, this has got to be one of the best. Here are the photos.

Hiyop Highlands

Cute and friendly local kid. Kamusta na kaya sya? 😉

15. Carangyan Beach

It was time to have lunch by the beach. We then went straight to Carangyan Beach Resort , one of the famous resorts in Pandan. We had some seafood for lunch and did our own versions of siesta by the beach.

Carangyan Beach

Luckily, we had a lot of time to spend at the resort. It was also a chance for us to swim and enjoy everything. Just like most of the beaches that we explored in Catanduanes, Carangyan Beach is raw and untouched. The view of some islets makes the experience extra special.

16. Delicia’s Farm

Before even the farm-to-table phenomenon became popular, Catanduanes already has its own – It’s Delicia’s Farm. Also located in Pandan , Catanduanes.

It’s a combination of a resort, farm, and restaurant. The food is of course organic and sourced from the farm. We had a chance to talk with the owner. He was such a joy to talk to. He also had a regular job but then decided to quit to put up this farm. I can still remember his questions to us during our chat. “Do you really want to work 9 to 5 for the rest of your life?”

Delicia’s Farm

Of course, most people in our group are employees from the tourism and LGU so it’s obvious what would be their possible answers, right? But for me who recently quit my corporate job at that time, I have the same answer as him.

They served us a lot of food like vegetables and roasted chicken. Aside from the farm, there’s also a small pool to accommodate guests.

17. Cagnipa Rolling Hills

“Save the best for last.” This is exactly what I feel when we visited our last spot for the day. We trekked a little passing through some hills until we reached the stunning Cagnipa rolling hills.

Cayniba Rolling Hills

Cayniba Rolling Hills

Cayniba Rolling Hills

I thought that I’ve seen enough of Catanduanes. I thought that we’d already witnessed the most beautiful views, but we were wrong. Cagnipa Rolling Hills’ beauty is jaw-dropping. We were there just a few minutes before sunset, so we witnessed a dramatic and stunning scenery as the last rays of the sun bid goodbye to the ocean.

What a great way to end our day exploring the province.

18. Tuwad Tuwadan Lagoon

Just near the Cagnipa Rolling Hills, there’s a rugged stair by the end of the cliff leading to the rock formations below going to a crystal clear blue lagoon.

Tuwad tuwadan Lagoon was named as such because according to some stories, you need to make this “ tuwad ” position, bending over, as you pass through the steep stairs. We were lucky that when we visited, there were already some cemented parts. Imagine going to this place years ago, you really need all the courage for this adventure.

Tuwad Tuwadan Lagoon

Below is a blue lagoon that looks like a swimming pool perfectly crafted by nature to blend with the rugged features. Some couldn’t resist the temptation, they finally gave in to the invite and took a dip into the lagoon. As for me, who is not a good swimmer, I just enjoyed the view. It was also a chance for us to take some awesome photos.

19. Cagnipa Beach & Cove

From the top of Cagnipa Rolling Hills, you’ll witness Cagnipa Beach and Cove. Located in Brgy. Balognonan, Cagnipa beach is secluded and can only be reached by motorbike or boat. But you once arrive there, everything is worth it.

With its azure and clear water, this is a perfect place to relax and commune with nature. If you want some adventure, you can snorkel and witness the abundant marine life too.

20. Virac and the Abaca Festival

The capital town of Virac is a charm in itself. It’s laidback but it offers you also the comforts of having access to delicious food and some leisure activities. Staying in Virac for a couple of days before embarking on a journey to the province is also a nice experience.

One of the best times to visit Virac is in the 4th week of May during the celebration of Abaca festival . It’s the main product of the province and during this time Catandunganons celebrate the bountiful harvest of Abaca and also the blessings that come with it.

Abaca Festival

Trade Fairs, Street dance, and Flores De Mayo featuring gowns made from Abaca are some of the events that you can expect during the festival.

So there you have it, these are the best tourist spots that I visited in Catanduanes when I explored the province. I know that there’s still a lot to explore, share your comments and recommendation below. Who knows, I might come back to Catanduanes and continue exploring this island wonder.

Catanduanes used to be called the Land of the Howling Winds because typhoons tend to happen quite often here. Now the island has rebranded itself and became the Happy Island to represent its inhabitants and the warm welcome you’ll get there. Most of Catanduanes tourist spots are still pretty wild and left untouched, perfect if you have the soul of an explorer.

Catanduanes tourist spots:

Binurong view point.

Catanduanes tourist spots

Binurong is probably the most beautiful place in Catanduanes. A 20-minute trek will take you to these amazing cliffs. The place is truly magical, you won’t see many spots like this in the Philippines. The views are breathtaking. You can also go down and swim in a natural pool. It’s so green, you’ll feel transported to a different world.

Entrance fee: 40 pesos – Add 200 for a guide and 20 for the parking. To get there, you can hire a tricycle (around 1500 pesos from Virac, good for 6 persons)

Similar to Binurong, Cagnipa Rolling Hills , in pandan, is becoming another important tourist spot in Catanduanes.

Tampad beach

Catanduanes tourist spots

This beach is famous among locals for its rock formations showing two faces of Jesus. It’s really weird. Apart from the Jesus carvings, the beach is really nice. Perfect for swimming, you can also enjoy some snorkeling near the rocks. The sand is unique, I’ve never seen anything like it in the Philippines. It’s almost orange and really soft.

Catanduanes tourist spots

On the way to the beach, you’ll see the ruins of a bell tower. It was brought there by a storm a couple of years ago. The church is at least 5 kilometers away.

Entrance fee: 50 pesos

Puraran Beach Resort

Catanduanes tourist spots

Puraran Beach is one of the most famous Catanduanes’ tourist spots, especially among surfers. The currents allow you to surf in some parts, and swim in others. The sea is really quiet for the first 50 meters and then the strong waves start. It’s not a spot for beginners as the current is really strong. The beach is also really nice and the surroundings are spectacular.

Entrance fee: 20 pesos – To get there from Virac, take a jeepney to Baras then take a tricycle.

On the beach’s right side, you’ll find Balacay Point , the perfect spot to get a panoramic view. You can drive or trek to it.

Little Batag Beach

Right next to Batag Beach, Little Batag Beach offers quieter surroundings. The beach is really nice with white sand and crystal-clear water. The place is famous for its majestic cliffs and rock formations, carved by the waves. If you want, you can climb the rock to get a nice view of the island and the ocean.

It’s possible to camp there, but you’ll need to bring your own equipment and don’t expect showers. You can reach the beach at low tide from Batag beach or through the village and the forest.

Meteo center

Catanduanes tourist spots)

This is the perfect spot to watch the sunset. One of the highest points on the island, you’ll have a really nice panoramic view over Naval and its surroundings.

Talahid Falls

These falls are rarely frequented so you might have the place all to yourself. Located in barangay Cabungahan, you’ll need to trek for about one hour to get to the fall. Talahid falls have two levels, the first one is about 4 meters high and the upper one is around 10 meters high. The place is perfect for a picnic and to take a swim. Bring everything you need, there’s no one there, not even a caretaker.

Closer to Virac and easier to reach, you can also visit Maribina Falls , this 10 meter-high waterfall falls into a clear blue pool, perfect for swimming. You might also want to go to the Santo Domingo River, it’s a good place to swim too.

Luyang Cave

Near the village of Lictin, you’ll find several limestone caves, the most frequented is Luyang Cave. The water there is believed to have healing properties. You’ll need to find a guide, you can ask around in the village or arrange a guide via the tourism office in Virac. The cave is not very complicated to visit, you don’t need to be an expert at spelunking. The path is about 200 meters and easily walkable.

In the 18 th century, the cave used to serve as hideout and shelter when the Moros came to raid the village. One day, the Moros found the entrance of the cave, hidden by branches and leaves. The villagers put fire to it to prevent the Moros from entering the cave. It didn’t work out as planned, the wind blew the wrong way. All the villagers died asphyxiated. Every year a ceremony is held to commemorate the event.

Near Luyang cave you can also check out Mount Cagmasoso , the highest peak on the island. From up there, the view is breathtaking. You can even spot the Mayon Volcano in Albay from up there.

Catanduanes Museum

Located in Virac, in the same building as the tourism office, Catanduanes Museum is home to many local ancient artifacts as well as several objects from the Spanish era. Worth a look if you’re in town.

Closed on weekends – Entrance fee: 50 pesos

Palumbanes Islands

Catanduanes tourist spots

This cluster of islands is perfect if you like island-hopping, the beaches are paradise-like and the seafood delicious. The islands are pretty remote with locals mainly being fishermen.

There are also a lot of trekking opportunities, going up the hills you’ll get an amazing view of the surroundings. A popular thing to do here is to watch the sunset from Binanderahan Hill . There are also a couple of nice reefs near the shore, perfect for snorkeling.

Palumbanes Islands are made up of three main islands: Tignob, Calabagio, and Paringpong. To reach them you’ll need to rent a boat from Caramoran town. If you want to stay overnight bring your own camping equipment, there are no hotels there (yet). Also, bring your own water and food if you don’t eat fish or seafood.

Twin Rock Beach Resort

One of the easiest beaches to access as it’s close to Virac, it’s also one of the best options to swim. The water there is peaceful and you can get inside the water without worries. At low tide, you can reach and climb some of the rock formations. The resort offers several activities such as jet skiing, climbing, and ziplining.

To get there, you’ll need to hire a tricycle from Virac.

Bato Church

Bato Church, Catanduanes

Bato Church is one of Catanduanes’ top tourist attractions and is definitely worth a look. Also known as Saint John Baptist Church, the church was built in 1830 and took more than 50 years to finish.

To get there take a jeepney to Bato, then walk to the church.

In Bato, you can also visit Sakahon Beach. You’ll need to take a tricycle to reach it (around 150-200 pesos one way). In the same area, you can also visit Poseidon Rock , also known as Carorian, Maribina falls , and the Bote Lighthouse . The easiest way to do so would be to hire a tricycle from Bato for half a day.

How to get to Catanduanes

By air: There are direct flights from Manila to Virac By bus and ferry: Take a bus bound to Tabaco Port and from there catch a ferry or a fast craft (if the weather is bad I advise taking the ferry, especially if you tend to get seasick).

Where to stay in Catanduanes

Virac is the most convenient location to visit the many Catanduanes tourist spots, but you can also stay in a resort on the beach if you want something nicer. Here are a couple of options:

  • In Virac, you can stay at Casa Remedios Bed & Breakfast – The rooms are nice with a garden, they offer breakfast and have a car rental service. They can also help you set you up with a driver to organize a tour.
  • On the beach, you can check out Puraran Surf Beach Resort.

Catanduanes tourist spots travel tips and itinerary

  • Visiting Catanduanes on your own if you don’t have a car is complicated, the easiest options would be to rent a motorbike,  negotiate with a tricycle driver or go through a tour.
  • It’s often windy so don’t forget to pack a light jacket.
  • I would advise staying at least two full days to see all of the Catanduanes tourist spots. You can do one day in Bato and around, stopping by the Meteo Center on your way back. The other day you could visit Binurong Viewpoint, Puraran beach, and Talahid or Maribina Falls. If you have two more days, plan a camping trip to Palumbanes Islands.

Bicol beach trip! Your guide to vacationing in Catanduanes and Caramoan

If you’re planning to visit two municipalities in one trip, consider Catanduanes and Caramoan. It’s possible to do a day trip to Caramoan from Catanduanes.

Catanduanes got its nickname “Land of the Howling Winds” because of its location along the path of typhoons. This municipality in Bicol doesn’t get as much attention as it should. It’s home to great biodiversity, old churches, beautiful beaches (perfect for relaxing and/or surfing), and stunning landscapes.

One of the reasons Caramoan became a prominent tourist spot is because it was one of the shooting locations of the hit reality TV show Survivor . In my opinion, Caramoan deserves the attention even if it didn’t become a location for a TV show. The group of islands has many beautiful beaches and lagoons worth visiting.

Getting into Catanduanes

The simplest and most convenient way to reach Catanduanes is by airplane. Cebu Pacific has regular flights from Manila to Virac. Book your tickets during their promotions to get the lowest possible prices.

By land and sea

If you’re up for a long trip, you have the option to take the bus to Tabaco. Buses for this route depart from Alabang, Pasay or Cubao. The fare for the bus is around P840+++ depending on the type and company. You also have the option to take a non-air-conditioned bus, which is cheaper. From Tabaco, make your way to the port. The ferry to Virac costs around P240 to P320 and you also must pay a terminal fee of around P30. The trip takes around four hours.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit depends on whether you like to surf or just relax on the beach. The peak summer season from March to May is ideal for beachgoers while August to October is the best time for surfing. For this itinerary, summer season is the best time to visit because you’ll be riding a boat to Caramoan from Catanduanes.

Best of Bicol: Must-try dishes and delicacies when you visit Bicol

Getting around

There are jeeps, vans, and tricycles that can take you around the city, or you can rent your own vehicle if you want a convenient way to explore on your own. Taking public transportation is an affordable option. The fare is up to P100 depending on the destination and the type of vehicle. However, the schedule is erratic because they only leave when they’re full. Even if you take public transportation to your chosen destination, you’ll have a difficult time getting to other places because of the erratic schedule. You can rent a van for around P3,000. This is an ideal option for large groups who want to save money and maximize their time. If you know how to ride a motorcycle, you can rent one for around P650 a day. Another option is to hire a tricycle for around P500 to P1,500. The price for hiring a tricycle varies depending on your itinerary.

You have several beaches, churches, waterfalls, and viewpoints to choose from during your trip to both Catanduanes and Caramoan.

This itinerary assumes you start with one full day.

caramoran catanduanes tourist spot

If you planned your trip in advance, chances are you’ll arrive early in the morning by airplane from Manila. Head straight to your accommodation and leave your bag/s for a day of beach-hopping to locations near Virac. The beaches in Catanduanes are pristine and underrated. Regardless of your mode of transportation, your itinerary may include beaches such as Mamangal, Marilima, Balite, and Twin Rock. Twin Rock has a resort where you can spend the night if you didn’t book a place to stay in Virac and would rather stay near the beach. It got its name from the two rock formations you’ll see jutting out from the waters. Mamangal, Marilima, and Balite all have gold-tinged shores and clear waters to swim in. I personally liked Mamangal Beach during my visit. The water was glass-like and the sand powdery. Take as much time as you want relaxing, swimming, beach-bumming, reading a book, have a picnic (leave no trace behind), sunbathing, etc.

*You can bring your own food for your day trip to the beaches or eat brunch before leaving.

caramoran catanduanes tourist spot

Spend your second day exploring Bato and its nearby attractions. Bato Church is one of the oldest churches in the province. The parish and the original structure dates to the 16 th century but the stone church only dates to the 1830s. Take a dip in Maribina Falls after your short visit to the church, then make your way to Sakahon Beach. Hang out by the beach and/or make your way up Bote Lighthouse for overlooking views of the coast. If you have the time and budget, you can add Puraran Beach and Binurong Point in Baras. Puraran is famous as a surfing destination while Binurong Point provides visitors with spectacular views.

It’s possible to do a day trip to Caramoan from Catanduanes. Try to leave as early as possible to make the most out of the day. If you’re staying somewhere in Virac, make your way to Codon Port. You can rent an entire tricycle for around P300 to P400 for up to four people. At the port, you can negotiate a rate with the boatmen you meet. Prices normally start at around P3,000+++ depending on the size of the boat, the number of your group, and the islands you’d like to visit. During my excursion, my friend and I managed to visit Matukad Island, Lahos Island, Tayak Island, Katanhawan Island, and Pitogo Island.

The views you’ll see as you approach the group of islands are similar to those you’ll see in Palawan, with towering limestone formations rising out of the water. Matukad Island’s main draw is the lagoon, which you’ll only see by climbing up the rocks. Tayak Island has a lake where you can swim in. The other islands boast of pristine shores and stunning beach views. The guide will also show you some spots where the contestants of Survivor camped out during the show’s filming.

The flight back to Manila is early; get ready the day before and buy souvenirs (if you want to) early. Check out and make your way to the airport. If you’re taking the ferry back to mainland Luzon, you’ll have a few hours to spend before it leaves.

How much will you spend?

caramoran catanduanes tourist spot

Your projected budget for visiting some places in Catanduanes and Caramoan is around P8,500 per person with at least two people traveling together. This covers accommodation in Virac, renting a tricycle to visit attractions, some entrance and parking fees, food and drinks, and boat rental for island hopping in Caramoan. This excludes flight or bus and ferry tickets to reach Virac. You could spend less depending on where you decide to stay, eat, or how you get around. You’ll save money if you know how to ride a motorcycle. You have some options on where to eat during your visit. There are local eateries, small restaurants, cafes, bakeries, grocery stores, and yes, there’s a Jollibee in Virac.  – Rappler.com

9 Must-Try Activities in Catanduanes – PH’s Happiest Island

It’s easy to see why Catanduanes is known as the “happy” island, with its rich history, culture, and stunning natural beauty—not to mention the warm and welcoming Catandungan culture. This island province located east of the Bicol peninsula, which consists of 11 municipalities—Virac (the capital town), Bato, San Andres, San Miguel, Bagamanoc, Pandan, Caramoran, Panganiban, Viga, Gigomoto, and Baras—, is one of the Philippines’ fastest-growing tourist frontiers, filled with sun-soaked, water-fueled, and nature-driven activities that will transport you in a one-of-a-kind tourism adventure.

Pack your island-hopping essentials for these nine must-try activities in Catanduanes.

caramoran catanduanes tourist spot

Ride the surf in Puraran

Located at the municipality of Baras, the champagne-colored Puraran beach provides a safe and consistent surf coupled with “majestic” waves that are some of the fastest and deepest right-handed barrels in the world. This casual surf location has attracted an increasing number of international tourists and has hosted competitions where local and international surfers compete. Experienced surfers will want to hit the waves on September and October when the swells are at their peak. Anyone who wants to warm up and surf more manageable waves may hit Tilod, a neighboring cove that provides smooth, consistent waves all year long.

Soak up to the views of Cagnipa Rolling Hills

Located at the municipality of Pandan, Cagnipa is one of Catanduanes’ answer to Batanes’ mesmerizing topographic rolling hills. This rolling green hills that gaze out into the deep blue ocean and immaculate-white sand beaches will surely catch your gaze and feelings. No matter where you’re walking, you can take in gorgeous vistas. Views of pristine islands, lush hills, seas, and rocky coastlines are some of the most spectacular scenery in the area.

Camping, kite flying, and sunset viewing are just a few of the fantastic activities that Cagnipa Rolling Hills have to offer. The hike down a series of concrete steps leads to a tidal pool called Tuwad-Tuwadan Lagoon, where you may either swim or dive in.

Commune with nature at Maribina Falls

Take a plunge and cool down at the three-tiered Maribina Falls located at Bato. This serene falls with turquoise water is nestled with beautiful greenery. A 15-minute trek will take you from the busy main road to the serenity of the magnificent waterfalls. It is one of the most well-known and most accessible waterfalls on the island. It is about five meters tall with dazzling cascades of crystal-clear water. There are only a few cottages in the area, but you can choose to find a spot close to the waterfalls to relax and have a picnic.

Venture inside Luyang Cave

Explore Luyang Cave, a sanctuary used by the locals to escape the Moro invasions in the 1700s. Despite its poignant history, the cave park continues to draw visitors who wish to explore it and visit the clearing located a hundred meters from its exit.

Situated in Barangay Lictin, San Andres, the cave is filled with bats and towering rock formations. Here, visitors may enjoy a number of different activities, including hiking, prayer offering, spelunking, and photography.

Take in the sights of the Happy Island from a weather station

The PAGASA Weather Radar Station is located in Barangay Buenavista, Bato, Catanduanes, on a mountain summit that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Make sure to plan a stopover at this weather station as it offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the bay and surrounding islets. It’s best to visit around sunset to catch the shifting colors of the sky—from clear blue to vibrant oranges and reds—as well as the sea’s enchanting hues.

While at the station, you can also learn some interesting facts about its Doppler radar, which is used as a warning system for incoming typhoons. Inaugurated in May 2012, it’s the first radar of its kind to be built in the Philippines using new meteorological technology developed in Japan, acquired through a grant from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to PAGASA. Two other Doppler radars were built in Guiuan, Samar and Aparri, Cagayan.

Take a two-wheel tour on the island

Travelers who like the outdoors and prefer exploring on two wheels will enjoy Catanduanes. The happy island’s hilly terrain is steadily becoming a popular destination for bike and motorbike enthusiasts, thanks to flawless road links in all of its 11 towns. If you want to get immersed in the local culture, spend more time interacting with the people, and experience the natural beauty that you would otherwise miss, bring your bike or motorbike along (you can transport these to the island via a RORO ferry) and take it for a spin on Catanduanes’ 360-degree routes. There are 10 to choose from, all of which include stops at the island’s main tourist attractions:

  • Virac-San Andres (16.7km)
  • San Andres-Caramoran (33.4km)
  • Caramoran-Pandan (31.3km)
  • Pandan-Bagamanoc (46km)
  • Bagamanoc-Panganiban-Viga (28.1km),

By Air : Flights to Virac Airport from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila will take about one hour and 15 minutes. Before the pandemic, Cebu Pacific operated four flights each week. At present, however, the volume of flights has been reduced based on the number of passengers allowed and required by airlines.

By Land : You may also take a 10-hour bus ride or a private car from Manila to Tabaco City in Albay, then take a three-hour RORO ferry to Catanduanes. There are three ferries available. Two of them, the MB Regina Calixta and MV Star Ferry, both depart three times daily: at 7 a.m., 10 a.m., and 1 p.m. from Tabaco City and 6 a.m., 8 a.m., and 1 p.m. from San Andres, Catanduanes. Meanwhile, the MV Silangan V departs Tabaco City at 1 p.m and Virac, Catanduanes, at 7 a.m.

Where to stay in Catanduanes

You won’t find five-star hotels in Catanduanes, but you shouldn’t have trouble finding some excellent places to stay. A wide range of affordable accommodations are available on the island, including hostels, pension homes, and inns. These include DOT-accredited establishments like Angeles Homestay in Panganiban, Amenia Beach Resort in San Andres, and Casa Remedios Bed and Breakfast, E. Getting your essentials won’t be a problem, too, as Virac, the province’s capital, offers a plethora of retail options. There are two major malls: Center Mall and the Virac Town Center, a recently built commercial complex. Other Catandunganon shopping malls include, but are not limited to, Island Savers, Bazaar Supermarket, Virac Fortune Enterprises, Citizen, Century Family Mall, and VMart, all of which offer a variety of goods at affordable prices. There are also several public marketplaces and wet markets.

Several banks like BDO, China Bank, East West Bank, PNB, and Land Bank of the Philippines, among others, also operate on the island, so you don’t have to worry about your financing and banking needs. Regular banking hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Health and safety protocols

Visitors to Catanduanes must follow stringent safety procedures until their arrival. Some important requirements include wearing face masks properly, maintaining appropriate social distance, and regularly washing hands. Travel restrictions to and from the province and within its towns, however, are subject to change depending on a variety of factors including lockdown regulations and point of origin. Some locales may require a Travel Coordination Permit or S-Pass to allow entry. Visitors are advised to check the S-Pass website for requirements prior to their trip.

10 Tourist Spots for Your CATANDUANES ITINERARY

caramoran catanduanes tourist spot

This island province in Bicol became famous because of its waves ideal for surfing. However, Catanduanes is more than a surf destination, it has plenty to offer tourists looking for beautiful beaches, stunning vistas, waterfalls, and centuries-old churches. There are direct flights to and from Manila via Virac.

If you’re interested in visiting this province, here are some of the things to do and places to visit.

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

Ride the Waves of Puraran Beach

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Philmar Alipayo (@chepoxz) on Oct 14, 2018 at 6:01pm PDT

Catanduanes is a famous surfing spot during the months of July to October. During this time, the swells are perfect for at least intermediate level surfers. If you’re just a beginner, March to June is a good time to go. After riding the waves, enjoy the rugged but beautiful views of Puraran , or you could just sunbathe or chill. From Virac, get on a jeep bound for Gigmoto and tell the driver you’ll alight at Puraran; fare is around P45. Alternatively, you can board a jeep going to Baras and hire a tricycle to take you once in town. You can also hire a tricycle to take you directly from Virac, this can cost you up to P200 or more, depending on your negotiating skills.

Marvel at Binurong Point’s Views

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Johna Paguinto (@johnapgnt) on Feb 2, 2019 at 7:09pm PST

Catanduanes has a raw but beautiful appeal. One such place that fits this description is Binurong Point. It takes half an hour to reach the viewpoint, but once you get there it is worth the effort. You’ll see green rolling hills, stunning coastline, and jaw-dropping cliffs. The vista will remind you of Batanes’ landscape. Take plenty of pictures before moving on. If you’re a morning person, try to watch the sunrise here. There’s a guide fee of P200 and a P20 entrance fee.

Chill at Mamangal Beach

caramoran catanduanes tourist spot

After a day of activities and exploring the island, spend a few hours just chilling in Mamangal Beach. Its powder sand is soft enough to lie on. Go sunbathing, wade in the mirror-like waters or simply do nothing. The idyllic atmosphere of the beach makes it the perfect place to de-stress.

Get a Glimpse of History at Bato Church

View this post on Instagram A post shared by travel ni john (@travel_ni_john) on Mar 17, 2018 at 6:34pm PDT

Spanish influence is spread throughout the country, and Catanduanes is no exception. Bato Church is a remnant of colonial times. Admire its Baroque design and beautiful exterior. A trip here will take you back in time.

Cool Off at Maribina Falls

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Joshua Manuel Magistrado (@joshmagi) on Jul 17, 2017 at 6:26am PDT

The midday and afternoon heat can take its toll, especially during the summer. After a couple of hours around the province, head on over to Maribina Falls to cool off. The cold water of its natural pool will douse the heat and replenish your energy.

Go Up Bote Lighthouse

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Edmar Anahaw (@edventuristang_minero) on Nov 22, 2018 at 9:12pm PST

Catanduanes has a handful of spots that provide a stunning bird’s eye views. One of them is at the platform of Bote Lighthouse. This towering structure is an ideal location overlooking Sakahon Beach and the surrounding countryside. Admire the landscape and take a few photos.

See Cagnipa Rolling Hills

View this post on Instagram A post shared by I’ll Bee (@aldsss15) on Jan 19, 2019 at 6:04am PST

The province doesn’t seem to run out of spectacular views, and one you shouldn’t miss is Cagnipa Rolling Hills. It takes time and effort to reach but it is all worth it. You’ll see stunning pastoral vistas, verdant hillsides, and beautiful coves. To reach the viewpoint, go to Pandan in Northern Catanduanes and board a boat.

Try Hicming Falls’ Slide

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Howard Ilagan (@howanderer) on Jan 28, 2019 at 2:36am PST

Feel like a child again by trying the natural slide at Hicming Falls. The waterfall also has a pool where you can wade in and cool off. It takes less than 30 minutes of walking to reach Hicming from the barangay of the same name.

Go Beach-hopping

caramoran catanduanes tourist spot

Catanduanes has beautiful beaches worth adding to your itinerary. Twin Rock Beach Resort got its name because of the two rocks off its shore. Enjoy the facilities during a day trip or spend the night here. Marilima Beach has powdery sand and azure waters to swim in. Its rustic ambiance lets you relax and unwind. The beaches of Balite and Mamangal are also noteworthy additions to your places to visit list. You can hire a tricycle with a driver to beach hop. This costs approximately P500 or more.

Island-hopping

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jonathan Hofer Ele (@athanbebs) on May 31, 2017 at 6:03am PDT

The Palumbanes Islands is the unspoiled destination you are looking for. Its powder-like sand, turquoise waters, rugged beauty, and idyllic atmosphere fit the description of paradise. You can also visit some of the islands in Caramoan (Camarines Region) from Catanduanes.

Where to Stay in Catanduanes

The province isn’t as developed as its more famous counterparts such as Palawan, Boracay or Cebu. However, you can still find accommodations that fit your budget. Virac is the capital of the island. Here you’ll find many hotels and guesthouses, restaurants, shops, and others.

The town is also a transportation hub to different parts of Catanduanes. It is also easier to rent a car from here. Virac is an ideal base to do day trips to the attractions scattered all over the island. If you want to stay near the beach, Twin Rock and Puraran have affordable places to stay.

Bitaog Beach in Palumbanes Island

Palumbanes Islands: The Hidden Gem of Catanduanes

Catanduanes is mostly known for its mountainous terrains and rolling hills, but did you know that it also has amazing beaches? In our past trip to this province, Hali and I spent a day island hopping in Palumbanes Islands.

Palumbanes Islands (also referred to as Parompong by locals) is a group of islands located at the Maqueda Channel in Caramoran, Barangay. It consists of Parongpong Island, Tignob Island, and Calabagio Island.

From Virac, Catanduanes

From tabaco city, albay, boat to palumbanes island, parongpong island, tignob island, calabagio island, reminders and tips, where to stay, other places you can visit in caramoran, what to read next:, how to get to palumbanes islands.

Palumbanes Islands is located in Barangay Baybay in Caramoran, Catanduanes. It’s about

Please enable JavaScript

Virac is the capital of Catanduanes. It has its own airport, so it’s the easiest jump-off point to Palumbanes Islands.

From Virac, ride a bus or van bound for Pandan and get off at Barangay Baybay in Caramoran. Take note that regular schedules are from 9AM to 1PM only. Travel time is 2 hours.

If you’re coming from Tabaco City in Albay, ride a ferry to San Andres Port in Catanduanes. Then ride a van to Caramoran. Travel time is 1 hour.

Once you arrive in Barangay Baybay, head to the tourism office or go to Coco Beach Resort and look for Ate Letty, who will help you arrange a boat to the islands.

Here are the current rates ( Updated as of 2020 ):

  • Registration fee – P100 per person
  • Island hopping: Small boat – P1000-1500 / Big boat – Starts at P3500
  • No entrance fees at the islands

Aside from Palumbanes Islands, you may also ask your boatmen to take you to Cagnipa Rolling Hills and Tuwad-Tuwadan Pool for an additional fee.

Island hopping in Palumbanes Islands

These are the islands you can visit. We actually just visited Parongpong Island, but I’d also included the other two islands for your reference.

Parangpong Island is home to Bitaog Beach, a pristine creamy-sand shore that is perfect for swimming.

It’s an hour away from the mainland. We went here during the ber-months and the boat ride to the island was challenging — the waves were strong and there were times that I was afraid our boat would tilt sideways. The experience was worse even than my previous boat trips to Calaguas and Calayan Island . That saying, the beautiful beach awaited us!

There was no one else in Bitaog Beach when we arrived. There is a residential community in the island, but it’s on the other side. The beach has a beautiful cream sand and clear blue water. There is an open cottage and hut where travelers can stay overnight. Camping is also allowed here.

Bitaog Beach in Palumbanes Island

Another thing that’s great about Bitaog Beach is despite the fact that there doesn’t seem to be any caretaker here, it’s clean. The same can be said in other places we’d visited in Catanduanes. The people here must be so responsible!

We swam, built stuff in the sand, and walked until the midday sun started burning our bare backs. It was pure bliss and relaxation.

Bitaog Beach in Palumbanes Island

At the end of the beach is a beautiful, exotic-looking inlet. There is no easy way to get there — I had to find a way across shrubs and slide down the ground. Unlike the rest of Bitaog Beach, the water here is calm and dark emerald in color.

Inlet in Palumbanes Island

After a few hours, we went to the other side of the island. We passed by the island community who greeted us and asked where we were going. I had the impression that they rarely get visitors.

We then started to trek to the lighthouse. It took around 30 minutes. Local kids accompanied us. We passed by fields of tall grasses and then the non-functioning Parongpong Lighthouse. From atop the hill, we had a nice view of the surrounding island and Calabagio from afar.

Trail to Palumbanes Lighthouse, Catanduanes

Overall, I can say that even though we’d only visited Parongpong Island, it was worth it. Bitaog Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Philippines and the best thing is it’s still untouched. I hope the tourism office gets to manage it effectively, since Catanduanes is getting more visitors every year.

Tignob Island is only 30 hours away from Parongpong Island. Tignob Island is mostly known for its untouched coral reefs. However, you will need to bring your own snorkel and mask.

It also has a stretch of white-sand beach where you can swim. A cliff offers a nice overlooking view of the beach.

Calabagio Island is a small island where you can find a long grassy hill. There is really nothing to do here, but you can still drop by here before going back to the mainland.

Calabagio Island in Palumbanes Islands

Here are some reminders and tips for the island hopping tour:

  • The boats used for island hopping are usually just the fishers’ regular boats. Lifevests are still provided for safety.
  • If you plan on spending a whole day in the island, make sure to bring your own snacks and water. There are eateries near the port; Ate Letty can also cook food for you if you have pre-booked your island hopping tour.
  • Bring your own snorkel and mask.
  • Take your trash with you.

Most people go to Caramoran for a day trip. If you plan to stay overnight, you’ll find limited accommodations in the barangay.

Here’s where we stayed at:

  • Coco Beach Resort, Ate Letty: 09286204592

Palumbanes Islands is the main attraction in Caramoran. That saying, you can also head to lesser-known attractions:

  • St. John the Baptist Parish
  • Campo Ermetanyo
  • Hitoma Lake
  • Banban Falls
  • Guiamlong Falls
  • Natotoo Falls
  • Lintig Falls
  • Toytoy Beach
  • Inalmasinan Falls

Catanduanes Island: A Travel Guide To The Happy Island Of The Philippines

catanduanes island diy travel guide

It’s been a dream to visit Catanduanes Island. I was supposed to visit the island around January 2021, but it was postponed during the pandemic.

Then that dream finally came true after a year of waiting. Restrictions on traveling domestically and internationally have become more lenient! I have waited for this moment. The feeling was unexplainable, but I knew from within that I was on cloud nine.

Going backpacking around Catanduanes Island has always been a dream. The island is known for its scenic mountains, white-sand beaches, and happy people. In my case, the main reason why Catanduanes Island really caught my interest, was due to its most popular tourist spot, Binurong Point, where its scenic views are often compared to Batanes Island .

In this travel guide, get to know more about Catanduanes Island, how to get there, and the things that the island has to offer.

About Catanduanes Island

happy island catanduanes philippines

Located in the Bicol Region of Luzon, Catanduanes Island is the 12th largest island in the Philippines. In addition, Catanduanes is dubbed the “Land of the Howling Winds” due to the fact that strong typhoons hit the island every year. But it’s also known as “The Happy Island” because of the island’s friendly locals and its resilience in the face of typhoons every year.

Catanduanes has a great deal to offer. From its breathtaking views of the mountains to its amazing hidden waterfalls, awe-striking architectural designs of Spanish colonial churches, diverse culture, friendly locals, and untouched beauty of beaches. Furthermore, the island also annually celebrates “ The Abaca Festival ” to showcase the importance of abaca and its status as the main source of livelihood for the locals. It is also a celebration of the fiber industry and the products it produces, which is the primary material used in the handicrafts of Catanduanes and the entire Bicol region.

How to get to Catanduanes Island

There are a lot of options to get to the island. Here are the following:

From Manila, book a flight bound for Virac, Catanduanes (direct flight). The flight usually takes around an hour. On the other hand, direct flights heading to Catanduanes are usually expensive. But you are lucky if you score discounted or cheaper flights, especially when airline companies go on seat sales. You may book a flight via Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines.

From Manila, book a flight bound for Legazpi, Albay via Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines. This is another good option, especially if you plan on backpacking around the Bicol region. (Read my travel guide to the Bicol region ).Then, take a van heading to the SM Legaspi terminal. From there, take another van bound for the port. Once you arrive at the port, take a ferry heading to the Virac port. The ferry ride takes around 3 hours.

From Manila, buses from Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) are now available heading to Virac, Catanduanes. The one-way regular bus fare from PITX to Virac is around Php 1,350 and Php 950 for the economy (non-aircon) bus. Buses depart from the terminal at 4:30 p.m. daily and from Virac at 11 a.m. daily. You may find out more information on the Bicol Isarog website.

Getting around the island

The two most commonly used public transports on the island are the habal habal (single motorcycle) and the tricycle. It is very accessible to get around the island.

If you are staying in the main town (Virac), most of the eateries, stores, and cafes are very accessible.

Places to Visit Around Catanduanes Island

Based on our experience, my friend and I took a ferry to the island, and I didn’t regret taking this option. I’ve always imagined myself backpacking through the Bicol region. The ferry took us some time to get to the island, but it was all worth it. As we almost embarked on the island, I saw how huge the island is. It was really long and seemed to be really big from afar. Even the view from the ferry was amazing.

My friend and I stayed on the island for 3 days and 2 nights. With that, these are the places to visit on Catanduanes Island.

Bato Church

  • Bote Lighthouse

Maribina Falls

Binurong point, puraran beach, caramoan islands.

bato church catanduanes

The St. John the Baptist Church, more commonly known as “Bato Church,” is said to be the oldest church in the island province. This 19th-century church in Bato was built with mortar and coral limestone to withstand the strong storms that ravage the island every year. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) has designated this church as a historical marker in the province.

This amazing waterfall is also situated in the town of Bato. Named after the villages of Marinawa and Binanwaha, Maribina Falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the province.

This is the main highlight of the trip. Binurong Point is one of the main tourist attractions in Catanduanes. Situated in the town of Baras, Binurong Point is definitely one of the best places to visit while on the island. The best time to visit the place is at sunrise.

How to get to the Happy Island:

For those planning a trip to Catanduanes, here’s a starter guide on your journey to this stunning island paradise. This includes a sample 3D2N itinerary that will allow you to experience some of the most incredible sights and attractions that the island has to offer.

The most convenient way to get there is by booking a flight to Virac. As of the time of writing, the airline carrier Cebu Pacific operates one flight per day from Manila to Virac. By booking a flight with Cebu Pacific, you can ensure a hassle-free journey to this beautiful island paradise.

Another option you might want to know that getting there by land can take around 15-16 hours. But don’t worry, there are two options to choose from:

Hop on a direct bus from Manila (Cubao, Pasay, or Alabang) to Tabaco. The fare costs about P840, and the travel time is around 11-12 hours.

Another option is to take a bus to Legazpi, which takes around 12 hours. From the Legazpi bus terminal, you can take a jeepney or van bound for Tabaco. Once you’re in Tabaco, ride a pedicab to Tabaco Port.

If you’re planning to travel to San Andres Port or Virac Port from Tabaco Port, you have two options for passenger boats. The air-conditioned boat to San Andres Port costs P290, while the non-aircon option costs P220. For Virac Port, the air-conditioned boat is priced at P320, while the non-aircon option costs P240. The travel time is approximately 4 hours. There’s also a fast craft available to either port, which costs P320 and has a shorter travel time of 2 hours. However, the schedules for the fast craft are limited.

Catanduanes

On the southernmost part of Luzon lies Catanduanes province. The island dubbed as “The Happy Island” is one of the budding tourist spots of the Bicol region. Being surrounded by a body of water, the island became known for its array of water-based attractions such as lagoons, beaches, waterfalls and more.

As one of the underrated tourist spots in the Philippines, many are confused if what kind of places they can visit and the things they can expect from those sites. With today’s article, I’ll be sharing some recommendation and tips when traveling to Catanduanes.

Travelling to Catanduanes

The easiest route to take is to fly directly to the island from Manila to Virac, Catanduanes. Rates are highly dependable on the length of stay and cabin type. It’s recommended to use flight comparing sites to ease finding suitable fares to suit your budget and needs and at sometimes get discounts through booking via certain agencies.

Traveling by land is also a viable alternative. Modes of transportations involve riding a bus along Cubao, Pasay or Alabang bound to Tabaco or Legazpi. If the bus ride drops you off on Tabaco, then proceed with riding a pedicab to Tabaco port to transport you to Catanduanes island. On the other hand, those who took the route to Legazpi needs to ride a van or jeepney going to Tabaco.

Talisoy Beach

Accommodation available in Catanduanes

Depending on your preference, there are numerous lodging spots across Catanduanes. Below are recommendations you can consider when looking for a place to stay during your trip on the island.

Twin Rock Beach Resort

The resort overlooks the ocean and has the green hills as the backdrop to complete a scenic atmosphere of the semi-circular beach. The resort is 15-minutes away from Virac, located west of Catanduanes.

Marem Pension House

Located at the heart of Virac Catanduanes is Marem Pension House; The lodging area is popular among the tourist for its convenient location and homey ambiance, those two factors combined made Marem Pension House a go-to place when visiting the island.

Alon Surf Stay

East of Catanduanes is Alon Surf Stay, a known surfing spot amongst the locals. This lodging area has frequent package promo wherein they offer discounts and additional free breakfast meals.

Alon Surf Stay

Tourist Spots around Catanduanes

Catanduanes is where the land meets the sea, providing visitors the best of both worlds. From surfing, snorkeling, trekking, island hopping, cliff jumping and more, Catanduanes have it all. All you need is to carefully plan out the sites you wish to visit and build a strategic schedule that would fit within your vacation.

Happy Island

To help you plan your tour, you can seek the services of Philippinestravelpackage.com , where they offer customizable tours and curated travel packages, to help you ease the hassle of planning and booking lodging.

Tourist Monuments

Traveling from Manila to Catanduanes can be exhausting, that’s why we recommend doing first the activities which consume less energy like visiting shrines and churches. As churches and shrines hold a significant role in the history of Catanduanes, visiting them enables you to learn more about the culture and story behind the island.

Virac

Those who are searching for a place which offers tranquility away from the city, then the unspoiled lands of Palumbanes Island will suit you. The island was only recently discovered by the public, while Palumbanes is not exclusively closed, the distance the island have from the mainland made access harder for most people; However, while it’s an hour away from Caramoran, seeing the island and nature’s raw beauty is worth your time.

While there are plenty of beaches found in Catanduanes, Puraran beach, in particular, attracts the most tourist due to its position as one of the top surfing spots around the globe. Surfing enthusiasts are recommended to visit the island during July to October, which is the peak season for waves in Catanduanes.

Puraran Beach

Mountaineering and trekking are some of the activities tourist should try at least once during their visit on Catanduanes. Going to high altitude areas to overlook the plains, mountains, beaches, and forest from above is a picturesque scenery no one should miss.

The mountains open for public hiking are Mt. Cagmasoso at San Andres and Mt. Magsumuso at Viga, while Mt. Lantad’s terrain is appropriate for trekking.

If you want to experience the view from the top of the island but are not fond of trekking or mountaineering, then Balacay Point is an option for you. Located at the town of Baras, is Balacay Point or Benticayan point, the terrain is accessible by motorbikes, four-wheeled vehicles , and bicycles making it an easier reach than most mountains in Catanduanes.

Catanduanes is somewhat off the tourist radar compared to other provinces in the Philippines, but we believe that this beautiful island with extraordinary tourist destinations and kind locals will have its limelight to country’s must-visited places. With this guide, we hope it helps them reach closer to that goal.

Things to Consider

  • Plan your trip ahead of time and read blogs and travel guides as many as you can to build your preferred itinerary
  • Best time to visit Catanduanes is during summer from March  – May
  • Book your hotel and resort accommodations in advance
  • Book and coordinate your tours in advance for a hassle-free trip
  • Select which mode of transportation suits you best – by plane or by land + sea travel
  • Pick the tourist spots you want to visit and explore how to get there and manage time accordingly.
  • Food around Catanduanes is cheap / affordable
  • Don’t litter. Always bring your trash with you.

The Challenge of a DIY Trip to Catanduanes

We know you will also ask yourself, are 3 days and 2 nights enough to visit Catanduanes? The answers are Yes and a No. Yes, you may visit Catanduanes and select only the tourist spots you want to explore and No, because there are too many places to visit and to do’s in Catanduanes. Travel time should be on your utmost consideration.

Doing a Do-It-Yourself trip to Catanduanes for 3D2N is a real challenge especially when you have it by land and sea travel. From Manila to Tabaco, Albay it would take an average of 12 hours travel time. Assuming you will leave Manila at night, you will more likely reach Albay before sunrise. Earliest ferry trip to San Andres or Virac, Catanduanes is 6:30am – 7am and travel time is 1.5 hours (fastcraft) or 2.5 – 3 hours for RORO. Expect some delays onboarding and offloading, you will arrive at Catanduanes an hour or less before lunch. That is less half-day on your 3D2N itinerary already and start of your Day 1 in the island. You should maximize your Day 1 and Day 2 (1 and half day to explore Catanduanes) because your third day is more likely spent in travel time as well. Ferry schedules from Virac / San Andres Port start almost the same time from Tabaco which is around 7am. You need to get in the port as early as you can to secure your ticket or your spot if you’re bringing private vehicle. After the ferry ride, estimate time of arrival in Tabaco, Albay is before lunch which gives you another 12 hours land travel back to Manila.

Planning your trip carefully and ahead of time is the best thing you can do. If you think you can’t maximize a 3D2N trip, then you may want to adjust your itinerary and stay longer. It is always a good thing to come prepared and aware of all the things a tourist should know before they even go on a trip.

History of Virac

Folk stories tell of the arrival and settlement of Lumibao and his wife Milbigan together with their children and servants in an area called Vidak Spring. Lomibao was presumably a scion of Datu Dumaguil, one of the Malay Datus who colonized Panay Island in western Visayas.

When the men of Spanish conqueror Juan Salcedo explored the area in the late 16th century, they changed the pronunciation of Vidak to Virac and that’s how the town was called since then.

Christianity was brought to the place by the Dominican Friars.

In 1775, Virac was formally organized as a pueblo.

Don Leon Reyes was the Capitan Municipal of Virac when the Philippine-American War erupted in 1898. He led the resistance to American rule and was subjected to hard labor after the Americans succeeded in colonizing the archipelago.

Economy of Virac

Virac’s economy is anchored on its being the capital and largest town in terms of population. It is home to a seaport and airport which make it the gateway to the province. It is also the financial and commercial center with many banks, shops and grocery stores.

Still, many of the residents are engaged in farming and fishing. Rice, abaca, fish and vegetables are the main products.

Tourism is considered a sunrise industry and the government is supporting its development.
