Chance the Rapper, real name Chancelor Bennett, is an American hip hop recording artist all the way from Chicago in Illinois, USA.

Chance the Rapper was born in 1993 on April 16. He showed an affinity for music from a young age and was very musical at school, forming a hip hop duo whilst still in high school. It was during his school days that he recorded his first full length project, a mixtape he titled ’10 Day’. Despite being somewhat of a troublemaker, having been suspended for weed related activities, Bennett had big musical aspirations and in December 2011 he released his first song, ‘Windows’ and announced his ’10 Day’ project. After a further year of polishing his music, Bennett finally released the album on April 3 2012. It was received very well locally and made available to download via Datpiff, which it subsequently was over 250,000 times. This staggering success marked just the start of Bennett’s career and his transformation into Chance the Rapper.

Chance’s second mixtape release, entitled ‘Acid Rap’ earned him mainstream recognition and he soon began to earn a following. Released on April 30 2013, it was certified double platinum and downloaded 800,000 times. It was also nominated for Best Mixtape at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards that year. It was listed on multiple top 50 album lists that year and led to Chance touring across the US for the first time.

Live reviews

Chance took the stage about a half hour later and everything started out pretty normal. The word ‘angels’ was scrawled across the multi-level LED screens, topped with a halo. He wore his signature “3” cap, white t-shirt, and black jacket as the crowd lost their shit. Donnie Trumpet was joined by another member of The Social Experiment stage left, while a drummer was situated stage right. The live instrumentation brought something unique to the show, but the band kept themselves hidden in the shadows most of the set, thus allowing Chance the spotlight he deserved.

Proving himself much more than a studio rapper, Chance’s flow was impeccable, even when he had to compete with the thousands of fans who wanted to go bar for bar with him. The sense of normality continued through many of his more debaucherous tracks from Acid Rap, but that all changed after “Favorite Song”. That’s when Carlos showed up again. A life-sized lion walking on two legs, voiced by Detroit comedian HaHa Davis, became the moral compass of the show. Helping to guide Chance’s own good kid, m.A.A.d city narrative, the lion’s first request was to “take it waaay back,” which Chance did with “Brain Cells” from #10Day.

Chance The Rapper is as famous for how he’s managed his career as he is for the songs contained on his trio of mixtapes. Having never signed to a label, he has been able to maintain complete artistic freedom. That freedom was on full display on Tuesday night. Whether he was battling his demons in the form of stuffed animals, singing a duet with a furry female friend, or leading a choir of a dozen animatronic birds with an spread-winged angel behind him, Chance made it clear he was going to do whatever the fuck he wanted to do.

“I just do me!” he proclaimed at one point, before thanking the crowd for allowing that to happen. And that’s the difference between Chance and so many other braggadocious rappers. Sure, he can get down with the best of them on tracks like “No Problem” and “Mixtape”, but he also gets sentimental as hell on tracks like “Juke Jam” and “Same Drugs”.

And when was the last time you saw a hip hop show go full-blown gospel? I’m not just talking “Ultralight Beam” either. That song was incredible, of course, but it wasn’t until “How Great” turned the Fillmore into a legitimate church that I realized how much Chance’s religion plays into his live shows. He continued his role as a preacher through “Finish Line / Drown” and “Blessings (Reprise)”; the congregation consuming every word like communion.

I honestly didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at that point in the night, because as serious as the message might have been, it was hard to ignore the fact that the whole scene looked like something that should be going down on Sesame Street rather than Colfax Avenue.

Chancellor Bennett aka CHANCE THE RAPPER has to be one of the greatest performers under the age of 25! Chance has the ability to completly capture not only his target audience but every security guard and policemans' full attention as well. His presence on the stage CANNOT be ignored by anyone that can hear. Even his opening acts were excellent, setting a perfect foundation for an amazing night. Young & Sick, Sweater Beats, and Travis Scott were extremely enticing and had the crowd well warmed up by the time Chance hit the stage. Chance's concert was a perfect balance of rave and kickback performing songs from "10 Day" and introducing brand new material that had us all singing the course before he even started the song. Aside from the unforgettable performa by Chance, I MUST shout out the Social Experiment, which I believe is his band and crew. His band, alone, is superb and its incredibly inspiring to see people my age being masters of their art. Luckily, Chance featured the band during the performance of the hidden track "Paranoia" and they shined as if they were performing at Carnegie Hall. Im really glad that he genuinely expressed his love for his fans with an exteneded version of "That's Love" dedicating individual "I love you's" to fans. What made it so touching was that fact that he requested that the fans look him in the eyes when he pointed and spoke to them giving each phrase an authentic fell. This was my third concert of many more to go for Chance the Rapper and I will be looking forward to seeing Sweater Beats and Young & Sick in concert very soon. For those of you who love live music and dont mind sweating to the beat, CHANCE THE RAPPER concerts are for YOU!!! He performs for YOU!

At the ripe age of 21 Chance the Rapper is one of newest and youngest faces in hip-hop. Despite being so young Chancellor Bennett already has two mix tapes and a few tours under his belt. His second mixtape ‘Acid Rap’ awarded him universal claim, it’s gone double platinum on DatPiff, BET named it one of the bst mix tapes of 2013, and Pitchfork gave it an 8.4 and the “Best New Music” title. While we wait for Chance to release a full length album he’s been putting out a few features with the likes of Childish Gambino, Chuck Inglish, and others. He’s also been touring the country and getting ready for the summer festival season.

Chance differs from most hip-hop MCs in that hehas the privilege of touring with a live drummer and a keyboardist who help add to the atmosphere and create a concert like experience rather than a DJ on a Macbook making beats. Chance also has a few friends help him out on stage with some ambient lighting to create some special effects that help you get in the mood for some of the more popular cuts from ‘Acid Rap’ like “Pusha Man,” “Cococa Butter Kisses,” and “Favorite Song.”If you’re planning on catching Chance the Rapper soon, brush up on those free mixtapes, he has a diehard fan base that will be up front and center for the show, you don’t want to be left alone in the dark not knowing any of the lyrics, hooks, or beats.

Chance the rapper is arguably the most unique voice in the world of hip hop today. We live in a time when rap is one of the most predominate genres in chart music. However Chance with just pure talent and virtually no commercial backing has become one of the biggest mc’s on the block. Starting with his self-produced 2011 debut ’10 Day’ it was clear that he was a voice to be heard. This was followed by his critically and commercial successful free mixtape masterpiece ‘Acid Rap’ which launched in 2013 and is still touring. As a live musician, Chance literally blew me away with sheer mad energy opening with ‘Everybody’s Something’ and several other tracks before even introducing himself. With a live backing band his live shows are more reminiscent of a rock concert and his crowd involvement makes him as much of a powerful frontman as a rapper. Song highlights included ‘Pusha Man’, ‘Cocoa Butter Kisses’, ‘Braincells’, ‘Paranoia’, ‘Juice’ and a beautiful cover of Ziggy Marely’s ‘Believe in Yourself’. To conclude the night he proclaimed his love to us, we love you too Chance and you will be welcomed back in London with open arms.

I don't normally go to many Rap shows but when I heard chance was coming to London I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Chance certainly didn't let the crowd down. He had so much energy and was visibly happy to be on that stage. This attitude always has a great effect on the crowd. It was one of the best crowd atmospheres I have seen in a while. Crowds normally take a few songs to get warmed up but not tonight. Right from the first song chance had the crowd in the palm of his hand singing along. He appeared to change the setlist to keep the crowd involved and despite the sweaty July heat he managed to keep the crowd singing, shouting and jumping along right until the very end.

Second time around, already saw them on this tour and was still great. Mostly stuff from Coloring Book, I would love to get more from SURF and Acid Rap because this group (The Social Experiment) goes a long way back and have done amazing things.

I personally love the fact that it's live music, trumpet, drums, keys, vocals. I don't see that a lot in Hip-Hop and I think it makes a huge difference.

I sat in the bowl, pretty far from the stage but heard great, the venue is pretty good overall.

Support Chance! He's still passes out music, this is how he earns his living. They deserve it.

I can honestly say that this was the greatest night of my life. He gave such an amazing performance and it was so heartfelt. He sang all the songs we wanted to hear and I was not disappointed at all. He gave off so much energy and the stage looked amazing. I wish I could go again and definitely will be looking for his concerts if he comes back to Oakland. He is such an amazing performer and you can tell he just loves to do it. He brought based god and kehlani with him onstage as a surprise and it was insane! 10/10 would go again for sure.

Terrible show. I absolutely love Chance, but this was basically a BBC Live Extra showcase of lesser-known England DJs with Chance playing 2 minutes sections of some of his hits from Colouring Book and then finishing after maybe 25 mins. The crowd started leaving halfway through his set as he was the final act, and you could tell he didn't really care to be there. I was super amped to see Chance but this was a terrible show. He rapped perhaps 1/3 of the lyrics and then did a couple shout out to the crowd then left. Bad job BBC Live extra!

Fantastic. The dj opening act had the crowd hype. Hell he even played adele and the crowd was singing all the words in perfect unison with their cellphone lights on. Then of course chance was amazing. great visuals and even had fireworks and streamers and pyro. He did alot of his new stuff but a few of his fan favorites like cocoa butter kisses and this my jam. Of his new stuff he did the songs that speak to my heart like blessings and all we got which was real live. all in all it was a fantastic show

I've seen Chance with the Social Experiment twice now and both shows were amazing. Chance has a way of really connecting with his audience. You can tell special care is taken to make a dynamic, inspiring and entertaining show. You can also see the growth in performance quality over time. If you're a Chance/SoX fan make sure you get out to one of their shows. Definitely worth it! Not to mention their opening acts are usually pretty dope. Big shout out to D.R.A.M for his performance in Detroit!

Chance The Rapper Cancels European Tour

By Peter Helman

Chance The Rapper was supposed to perform at a bunch of European music festivals after wrapping up his North American tour this summer, but that’s not happening anymore. Consequence Of Sound reports that Chance has cancelled his planned European tour “due to scheduling conflicts beyond his control,” according to a statement on Way Out West’s website. “Chance sends his apologies to his fans and looks forward to returning to Europe soon.” Last year, Chance cancelled three European tour dates for “personal reasons.”

Chance cancels remaining European tour dates

chance the rapper europe tour

Chance the Rapper has cancelled all of his upcoming tour dates, reportedly for "personal reasons."

"It is with regret that Chance the Rapper has to cancel the remainder of his European tour due to personal reasons," promoter MCD announced on their Facebook page earlier today.  Chance's Magnificent Coloring World Tour was supposed to conclude with those European shows, but it looks like the Chicago rapper's world tour will have to skip most of the continent. MCD says Chance will be back to perform in the region at an unspecified date in 2017.

Yesterday during an interview with the BBC, Chance expressed his concern for fellow Chicagoan and frequent collaborator Kanye West, who was recently hospitalized for exhaustion. "We might come home early to see this man,” Chance replied when asked about Kanye. West also recently cancelled the remainder of his St. Pablo tour due to his health problems.

Chance the Rapper’s Tour Kicks Off – “Be Encouraged”

  • Copied to Clipboard

chance the rapper europe tour

Chance the Rapper kicked off his 43-date Be Encouraged  Spring tour in San Diego, California last month and continues his streak as America’s most-loved MC.

Recently playing a sold out show at the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater, Chance shows no signs of slowing down, despite his recent European show cancellations.

For the second time this year, the artist announced that his upcoming European tour dates were cancelled, citing scheduling conflicts that are “beyond his control” and releasing the following statement : “It is with regret that Chance the Rapper has to cancel his upcoming performance at Way Out West and his European festival tour in August. This is due to scheduling conflicts beyond his control. Chance sends his apologies to his fans and looks forward to returning to Europe soon.”

thank YOU GUYS for everything. tour goes on sale at https://t.co/m5rYnxicio at 7pm ET pic.twitter.com/9PVAdLs8Vt — Chance The Rapper (@chancetherapper) February 14, 2017

But fear not! The Chicago native is still set to play the remainder of his North American Spring Tour dates throughout the United States until the end of June, in which the tour ends in Dover, Delaware. Additionally, Chance will headline 14 different festivals this summer, including the popular Texas-based music festival Austin City Limits.

Here’s Chano’s setlist from his first stop in San Diego:

When he’s not on the road serving up some Acid Rap to his millions of fans, the rapper keeps busy by managing a retail line as well as leading initiatives for social, economic and political progress.

Chance regularly donates to schools, leads marches to the voting booths, hosts free “Open Mike” nights for teens in Chicago, and so much more—this is just the tip of the iceberg for the Chi-town hero.

Check out this clip of Chano performing one of our favorite songs live in Sacramento:

Chance recently celebrated the 4 year anniversary of ‘Acid Rap’, his second official mixtape which he gives credit to “changing his life.” He expressed his gratitude on his socials this week, “Thank you to all the artists and producers that made this thing a possibility, I’m forever grateful.”

Carl Court / Getty-AFP

Nick Cave has been singing about mortality for decades, and he's really good at it. Whether the narratives are biblical or pulpy, the victims innocents or death row convicts, the circumstances comprehensible or cruelly random, Cave's songs are on intimate terms with the infinite ways a life can be extinguished. And yet, "Skeleton Tree", his latest album with his estimable band, the Bad Seeds, is a relatively concise song cycle shadowed by death that feels different than all the rest. Read the full review.

On "22, A Million," Justin Vernon reimagines his music from the bottom up by letting technology — synthesizers, treated vocals, electronic sound effects — dictate. The songs retain their melancholy cast, but now must fight for air beneath static and noise. Read the full review .

The new album embraces her individuality more explicitly than ever, both more autobiographical and more politically and socially direct than anything she'd recorded previously. It's a rawer, less elaborate work than its predecessors, yet still hugely ambitious. Read the review

Now "Schmilco" (dBpm Records) arrives, a product of the same recording sessions that produced "Star Wars" but a much different album. Jordan Strauss / AP

"Blonde" is a critique of materialism with Frank Ocean employing two distinct voices, like characters in a play, a recurring theme throughout the album and perhaps its finest sonic achievement. A party spirals out of control, the music rich but low key, a melange of organ and hovering synthesizers. Ocean uses distorting devices on his voice to add emotional texture and to enhance and sharpen the characters he briefly embodies. The upshot: They're all little slices of Ocean's personality with a role to play and they each sound distinct. Read the full review.

Chris Sweda / Chicago Tribune

Warpaint's unerring feel for gauzy hooks and slinky arrangements germinated over a decade and flourished on the quartet's excellent 2014 self-titled album. But the band has always nudged its arrangements onto the dance floor — subtly on record, more overtly on stage — and "Heads Up" (Rough Trade) gives the group's inner disco ball a few extra spins. Nuccio DiNuzzo / Chicago Tribune

"Black America Again" (ARTium/Def Jam) arrives as a one of the year's most potent protest albums. The album sags midway through with a handful of lightweight love songs, but finishes with some of its most emotionally resounding tracks: the "Glory"-like plea for redemption "Rain" with Legend, the celebration of family that is "Little Chicago Boy," and the staggering "Letter to the Free." "Love & Hate" shows Kiwanuka breaking out of that stylistic box. His core remains intact: a grainy, world-weary voice contemplating troubled times in intimate musical settings. The album announces its more ambitious intentions from the outset, with the trembling strings, episodic piano chords and wordless vocals of the 10-minute "Cold Little Heart." It's a striking, if atypical, approach to reintroducing himself to his audience — a five-minute preamble before Kiwanuka begins to sing. Read the full review.

"Peace Trail" — Neil Young's second album this year and sixth since 2014 — is occasionally fascinating. It's also not very good, a release that surely would've benefited from a bit more time and consideration, which might have given Young's ad hoc band — drummer Jim Keltner and bassist Paul Bushnell — a chance to actually learn the songs. Kanye West's "The Life of Pablo" (GOOD/Def Jam) sounds like a work in progress rather than a finished album. Chance the Rapper has canceled upcoming appearances at European music festivals this summer citing “scheduling conflicts beyond his control.”

The rapper was set to tour abroad after his Lollapalooza headlining set beginning August 8 in Oslo, Norway at Oya Festival followed by Way Out West Festival in Sweden, HAVEN in Copenhagen and Pukkelpop in Belgium.

Way Out West Festival released a statement from Chance that read, “Chance sends his apologies to his fans and looks forward to returning to Europe soon.”

This is the second time in a year the rapper has canceled European tour dates.

In 2016, he returned to the states after appearing on BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Live Lounge to talk about his album “Coloring Book” and his “big brother” Kanye West. Shortly after the appearance, Chance’s team cited “personal reasons” for cancellations in Dublin and Manchester.

The Tribune has reached out to Chance the Rapper’s management for comment.

Chance the Rapper has reportedly canceled on a number of summer music festivals in Europe. As pointed out by Consequence of Sound , the Chicago artist was scheduled to perform at four events in August, near the end of his Be Encouraged Tour of North America . The affected festivals are Øya in Oslo, Way Out West in Gothenburg, HAVEN in Copenhagen, and Pukkelpop in Hasselt

Chance’s team released a statement published on Way Out West’s website :

“It is with regret that Chance the Rapper has to cancel his upcoming performance at Way Out West and his European festival tour in August. This is due to scheduling conflicts beyond his control. Chance sends his apologies to his fans and looks forward to returning to Europe soon.”

It appears the remaining U.S. tour dates will not be affected. The Be Encouraged Tour kicked off last month and will include stops in Dallas, Detroit, Toronto, and Chicago before wrapping up in Phoenix on Oct. 20. DJ Oreo and King Louie will join Chance on the road.

Chance the Rapper is making his long-awaited comeback.

The Chicago MC has announced a new mixtape entitled Star Line inspired by his trip to Ghana and Marcus Garvey’s Black Star Line — a short-lived shipping and transportation endeavor meant to transport goods, services and African-American tourists to and from Africa. Chance posted a trailer recently of him in Ghana and clips of him in various studios working on new music. The clip features fellow Save Money member Vic Mensa, as well as Lil Wayne, Lil Yachty, T-Pain, Jazze Pha, Jermaine Dupri and DJ Premier, all helping him put this new era together.

In 2021, The Independent ’s Sam Moore wrote : “As listeners of Illmatic and the rest of his discography know, Nas was always an old head with a baby face, more philosopher than hustler – but he is also a linguistic genius, capable of bending words, rhymes and syllables at will.”

The new tour will begin at the House of Culture in Helsinki, Finland on 22 October. It will then call at B-K in Stockholm, Sweden (24 October), Kb Hallen in Copenhagen, Denmark (25 October), the Palladium in Cologne, Germany(27 October), Fabrique in Milan, Italy (30 October) and Halle 622 in Zurich, Switzerland on 31 October.

In November, Nas will play the Gasometer in Vienna, Austria (2 November), the Uber Eats Music Hall in Berlin, Germany (3 November), AFAS Live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (5 November), Le Zenith in Paris, France (7 November) and Stadthalle Offenbach in Offenbach, Germany on 8 November.

In the UK, Nas will appear at the O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester (10 November), Usher Hall, Edinburgh (11 November), University Wolverhampton at the Civic Hall, Wolverhampton (14 November) and finally the Royal Albert Hall in London on 15 November.

Fans can register here to buy tickets in the presale, which begins at 10am BST on Tuesday 23 April.

General tickets go on sale at 10am BST on Thursday 25 April.

In a five-star review of Nas’ 2021 album King’s Disease 2 , The Independent ’s Annabel Nugent wrote: “While most of today’s prominent rappers were not yet born when a 20-year-old Nasir Jones was coming up in New York City, you’d be hard-pressed to find one that doesn’t cite his 1994 benchmark debut Illmatic as an inspiration. A wordsmith, revered elder statesman, teacher, storyteller: the legend around Nas is all-encompassing.”

Candace Parker’s goodbye, without cheating the game, herself or her fans

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JUNE 24: Candace Parker #3 of the Las Vegas Aces gestures in the fourth quarter of a game against the Indiana Fever at Michelob ULTRA Arena on June 24, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Aces defeated the Fever 101-88. Candace Parker never wanted to cheat the game.

Of a player molded by Pat Summitt and the Lady Vols’ legacy, one would expect nothing less. Through 10 surgeries. Her pregnancy and birth of her first child, Lailaa, after her rookie season. Through offseasons spent playing in Russia and China and Turkey, and later, offseasons behind the desk on TNT, NBATV and CBS. Through a career that spanned 16 seasons and three cities in the WNBA , four years at Tennessee and two Olympics , it can be said assuredly: Parker never cheated the game. Instead, it almost feels like the game should’ve given her even more than it did.

Parker, 38, announced Sunday on Instagram that she had retired from the WNBA. From her home or a hotel or a gym somewhere, Parker silently pushed send and let the world know that one of the greatest who has ever stepped foot on a basketball court would not play again.

There were no heads-ups or warnings to the WNBA community or the players against whom she has competed for years. And there will be no send-off season or monthslong march toward her retirement. It was swift and succinct. And it was exactly how she wanted it — entirely on her terms. After a career that was too often derailed by injury, she was owed that.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Candace Parker (@candaceparker)

“I always wanted to walk off the court with no parade or tour,” her Instagram caption read. “Just privately with the ones I love.”

That Parker’s last WNBA game was a 2-point loss on the road to Dallas in 2023 is a footnote in her story. That might’ve been her last game on the floor, but her last WNBA game was a league championship. Her third one. She might’ve been on the end of the bench, not suited up, but she was crucial for the Las Vegas Aces every step of the way. Parker went out as she always was — a winner, an incredible teammate and an advocate for the game.

In reading Parker’s message, the first memory that comes to mind is not of her final season in Las Vegas, but of her final game in the 2021 season. She had come home to Chicagoland after 13 seasons in Los Angeles to bring a title to the city. It was the first offseason under a new CBA when free agency could thrive and she was — fittingly as one of the players who helped build the league — one of the first to deliver shocking free-agency news. Months later, in October, in a decisive WNBA Finals Game 4, with five seconds remaining, Parker pulled down the final rebound of the 2021 season and began to dribble up the court. As time expired, she picked up the ball and sprinted to the corner of the court, where her family awaited. She jumped into their arms.

She returned to center court to celebrate with teammates until she spotted Lailaa and motioned for her to come running. That was when the tears really started to fall. Parker played part of her rookie season pregnant with Lailaa and thus, Lailaa has been on Parker’s basketball journey since birth.

This moment with Lailaa💙 @Candace_Parker | #skytown pic.twitter.com/6cQsv7QLrb — Chicago Sky (@chicagosky) October 17, 2021

“Look at the city, man, they all showed up,” Parker said, looking up at the sold-out arena with her arm draped around her daughter. “They all showed up.”

But Parker had always been a player for whom people show up — fans, cities, her family, free agents. That season had its own harbingers of a swiftly changing league as viewership and attendance ticked up. In that final game, Chance the Rapper and Scottie Pippen sat courtside, but it was Lailaa to whom she held most tightly after the game.

Her basketball career spans the epic growth of this sport that has only hastened in the past few seasons. In 2003, she became the first women’s basketball player to ever announce her college commitment on ESPN. She would later become the first women’s player to dunk in an NCAA game. In the WNBA, she became the first (and still, only) player to win MVP and Rookie of the Year honors in the same season. Then, she became the first player to win three league titles with three franchises.

She was one of the first women’s players who tested the limits of positionless basketball. Even in college, her unicorn-like skills were undeniable. In the national title game during her senior year, play-by-play announcer Mike Patrick said: “This is almost unfair — someone of her size with this kind of speed and this kind of ballhandling.”

But it wasn’t unfair. Parker was just different. Maybe ahead of her time. Maybe right on time. She pushed the boundaries of what people saw for women’s basketball players. And she would continue to do so as a player in the WNBA both on and off the court.

She became a broadcaster, investor, professional women’s soccer team owner, face of Adidas basketball, producer and mother (in addition to Lailaa, she and her wife, Anna Petrakov, are expecting their second child together). She did all of this while continuing to fight injuries that risked her career, but rehabbing so that she could continue to be one of the best players in the WNBA. Her commitment to the game never wavered. She refused to give less than her all. A memory of Summitt not hesitating to kick her out of college practice for not giving 100 percent sat fresh in the front of her mind even two decades later.

In the wake of her retirement announcement, social media was flooded with photos from people — WNBA players, NBA players, athletes and fans — who admire Parker, both the player and person.

“The biggest thing is she did it her way, always,” former teammate Courtney Vandersloot told The Athletic . “She was the type of player that changed the game. What we see now, Candace was doing that early.”

Candace Parker has retired from the WNBA. I broke the news to her. Here’s her instant reaction ⬇️ https://t.co/t9CpY5wrnr pic.twitter.com/WD8unfrBdt — Ben Pickman (@benpickman) April 28, 2024

Parker never cheated basketball. She changed it. And, if anything, it owed her a few more attempts at a title and more wins while being fully healthy or having a full complement around her. Regardless of her last game, her last win or her last title, Parker changed the expectations of a women’s basketball player and WNBA player by being 100 percent herself. She stood on the shoulders of giants while allowing others to stand on her shoulders simultaneously, too.

For 16 WNBA seasons, Parker played for her family, her city and her league. She proved she could be almost as effective at that on the bench as a motivator and coach, when life necessitated it far too often, as she was on the floor. Even in retirement, her impact will be felt through the sport she helped grow.

Now, the girl who fell in love with “a little orange ball at 13 years old” can relax in retirement knowing it bounces better for the next generation because of her.
