History of Golf in Atlanta

Golf has deep roots in Atlanta. However, it was not until the early 1900s that the game really began to take off in Atlanta, thanks in large part to the efforts of legendary golfer Bobby Jones.

Jones, who grew up in Atlanta and attended Georgia Tech, quickly made a name for himself in the golf world, winning his first major championship at the age of 21. He went on to win a total of 13 major championships, including the coveted Grand Slam in 1930.

Jones’ success on the golf course helped to popularize the game in Atlanta, and he was instrumental in the founding of the East Lake Golf Club. The club, which was originally known as the Atlanta Athletic Club, was founded in 1904 and became a hub for golf enthusiasts in the city.

However, by the 1990s, the East Lake Golf Club had fallen into disrepair and was in danger of closing. That’s when Tom Cousins, an Atlanta developer, stepped in and spearheaded a major renovation of the course and surrounding community.

Today, the East Lake Golf Club is a thriving community and home to the Tour Championship, one of the most prestigious events in professional golf.

Bobby Jones and the Masters

In addition to his impact on the Atlanta golf scene, Bobby Jones is also known for his role in the founding of the Masters tournament. Jones, along with investment banker Clifford Roberts, founded the tournament in 1934 and it quickly became one of the most prestigious events in golf.

Today, the Masters is one of the four major championships in professional golf and is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious and exclusive events in the sport. The tournament is held annually at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, and attracts the best golfers from around the world.

Atlanta’s first public course, the Bobby Jones Golf Course, opened in 1932 and is named after the legendary golfer Bobby Jones, who grew up in the city. The 9-hole, par 30 course, was formerly part of East Lake’s second course and was reconditioned in 1998 by Rees Jones. It features short but challenging holes that require accuracy and precision.

The Wolf Creek Golf Course is a challenging course known for its wide fairways and fast greens. Opened in 2001 and designed by Mike Young, the course features a variety of holes that require accuracy and strategy. With a par of 72 and 7,028 yards from the back tees, the course covers 250 acres and boasts spectacular views and elevation changes.

Stone Mountain Golf Club (Stone Mountain)

Bear’s Best Atlanta is a unique course that features 18 holes designed by Jack Nicklaus, each inspired by a different course from around the world. The course is known for its challenging yet fun layout, with well-manicured fairways, fast greens, and echoes of famous holes Nicklaus has designed elsewhere.  Some of you may recognize this is not the only Bear’s Best course in the United States. There is also a Bear’s Best course located in Las Vegas, Nevada. It’s a similar format, with views of the famed Strip.

The Frog Golf Club (Villa Rica)

Distance from Atlanta: 40 miles

The Frog Golf Club, located just outside of Atlanta, is a hidden gem designed by Tom Fazio in 1998. The course features rolling fairways, fast greens, and a great mix of challenging and playable holes. Known for its impeccable conditions and scenic views of the surrounding landscape, The Frog Golf Club is an excellent choice for a round of golf.

Lanier Islands Legacy Golf Course (Buford)

Distance from Atlanta: 42 miles

Located just outside of Atlanta, the Lanier Islands Legacy Golf Course is a beautiful 18-hole course that offers a challenging but fun game for golfers of all levels. The course features beautiful views of the lake and some challenging shots across the coves. With a par of 72 and 6,695 yards from the back tees, the Lanier Islands Legacy Golf Course is a great choice for golfers looking for a scenic and challenging round.

Chicopee Woods Golf Course (Gainesville)

Distance from Atlanta: 56 miles

The Chicopee Woods Golf Course, designed by Dennis Griffiths, is a 27-hole course located just outside of Atlanta. With a variety of holes that range in difficulty, from challenging doglegs to wide-open fairways, the course is set against a beautiful natural backdrop and is known for its well-manicured greens and fairways. The three unique 9-hole courses and affordable rates make it a popular destination for golfers in the area.

Bonus Pick: Chateau Elan Golf Club (Braselton)

Distance from Atlanta: 55 miles

Located in Braselton, just northeast of Atlanta, the Chateau Elan Golf Club offers two stunning courses that golfers won’t want to miss. The Chateau Course features elevation changes, challenging bunkers, and an easier open course layout.  The companion Woodlands Course provides a more traditional layout with tree-lined fairways and natural hazards. Both courses offer a challenging yet fun experience for golfers of all levels, and there is also a short Par 3 course if you don’t have time for a full round. If you’re in the area, be sure to add the Chateau Elan Golf Club to your golf itinerary.  If time permits, you can even hit the resort’s winery for a tasting.

The Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club

Each year, the Tour Championship is held at the East Lake Golf Club, one of the most historic courses in Atlanta. The tournament brings together the top 30 golfers on the PGA Tour, competing for one of the most prestigious titles in professional golf.

Atlanta is perfect for outdoor activities and perfect for golf. The weather makes it easily a nine-month sport, and, let’s face it, year-round for golf fanatics. Atlanta offers a number of public courses that allow visitors to hit the tees and keep their game sharp. Here are a number of local public courses – and a few that are a bit outside Atlanta.

The Best Things To Do in Atlanta’s Top Parks

Outdoors: golfing, take it from these locals: atlanta has a lot to offer in the outdoors.

• Alfred “Tup” Holmes Golf Course is a city-owned, 18-hole course designed by Garrett Gill and George B. Williams. This Southwest Atlanta course is one of the least expensive courses in the area.
• Bobby Jones Golf Course , the city’s first 18-hole public course, was built in 1932 as a tribute to the game’s most famous golfer (and Atlanta native), Robert Tyre “Bobby” Jones Jr. Located near Buckhead and Midtown , the course features a signature 18th hole, which is a 361-yard dogleg right par 4. This par 70 course was designed by John Van Kleek.
• Brown’s Mill Golf Course is run by the city of Atlanta and is located on the south side of the city. The course has a 70.9 rating and 123 slope, meaning that it’s more for the weekend golfer but it’s still challenging. Green fees start at $19.25.
• Candler Park Golf Course is one of the city’s oldest public golf courses. Perfect for those who live or are staying in-town, this is a 9-hole executive golf course that features a hilly terrain and a thriving wildlife habitat. It is a walking-only course and reservations are not accepted.
• Charlie Yates Golf Course is located just 4 miles from Downtown Atlanta and is a 9-hole, par 30, mid-length course with Bermuda fairways and Bentgrass greens. Located at East Lake and designed by famed golf course architect Rees Jones, the course offers a mix of challenging par 3s and par 4s and also includes a driving range, chipping and putting areas, and a fully stocked golf shop.
• North Fulton Golf Course is another city-run course located near Chastain Park. The 18-hole course is full of par 4s with some 5s and 3s. Also known as the Chastain Golf Course, it was designed by Chandler Egan in collaboration with Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones. The par 4, 446-yard 18th hole is one of the most difficult holes in the city. It is a par 71 with Bermuda grass.

Outside Atlanta:

• Ashton Hills Golf Club is located 35 miles east of Atlanta and was previously known as the semi-private Indian Creek Golf Club. Designed by Desmond Moorhead, the course offers a practice range and putting green. The green and cart fees are included in the green fees that start at $31.
• Chateau Elan Winery & Resort offers 63 holes of championship golf. The Chateau Course is a 7,030-yard, par 71 course with contoured fairways, three lakes and two meandering streams. Designed by Denis Griffiths, this is one of the top courses in the state, and water comes into play on 10 of the 18 holes. The Woodlands Course, also designed by Griffiths, features rolling hills on a 6,735 yard, par 72 course. There is also a 9-Hole Executive Par 3 Course whose holes vary in length from less than 100 yards to more than 160 yards.
• Cobblestone Golf Course is located on the banks of Lake Acworth, about 30 miles from downtown Atlanta. Featuring Bermuda greens, white sand bunkers and a lakefront Ken Dye design, Cobblestone is awarded a 4-star rating by Golf Digest, and, while owned by Cobb County, is operated by the Mosaic Clubs & Resorts.
• College Park Golf Course is 15 minutes south of Atlanta — and one mile from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport — and is a 9-hole course with no tee times required.
• Echelon Golf Course, 45 minutes north of downtown in Alpharetta, has been named as the best public access golf course in Atlanta by Golf Magazine. Designed by Rees Jones, this 18-hole course offers 5 sets of tees on each hole to keep the playing field level and fun. Green fees start at $59.
• Although the Frog is a bit outside Atlanta (about 40 miles west on Interstate 20) it is recognized as one of the top public courses in the state. The Frog features Bentgrass, expansive bunking and was rated 4 1/2 stars by Golf Digest. In 2015 it unveiled a new clubhouse where a golfer can dine and relax after a round of golf. Designed by legendary golf course architect Tom Fazio, the charges start at $42.
• Stone Mountain Golf Course  actually is two championship golf courses and offers views of historic Stone Mountain and Stone Mountain Lake. The Stonemont Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., places emphasis on accuracy and strategic course management. Its par 70 layout stretches 6,863 yards and is challenging with narrow fairways, strategically placed bunkers and numerous stands of Georgia pines. The Lakemont Course, designed by John LaFoy, has a front 9 holes that wend around Stone Mountain Lake. The course is less demanding than Stonemont.

At this reception, we will announce our Pro-Am tournament & raffle ticket winners, plus hold a live & silent auction to continue raising as much money as we can for Heart of a Lion Foundation.

Celebrity Purse Game  | Day 3, July 2nd at 10am

On the morning of day 3, come spectate our celebrities & athletes while they compete against each other in a round of golf for the grand prize; a monetary purse of a minimum of $50,000 to be donated to their charity or foundation of choice! Celebrities must compete in 4–7 events to qualify for the 2024 Legends Celebrity Golf Tour’s grand prize purse. Tee time begins at 10am!

Celebrity Registration

If you are a celebrity/athlete and you would like to compete in Legends Celebrity Golf Tour, please fill out the form here   and we will be in contact with you or your representative with more details. Participating as a Celebrity during the Legends Tour, you will enjoy 2–3 rounds of golf and an all-inclusive stay at our finest resorts for your support in raising money for Heart of a Lion Foundation. To be eligible for the purse, we kindly request that you compete in a minimum of 4–7 events scheduled throughout the tour. This ensures fair competition and allows you to contend for the coveted cash prizes. However, please note that not being able to participate in four events does not disqualify you from joining the celebrity purse tournament.

In preparation for the tour, we kindly ask that you obtain your Handicap Index ® for scoring based on a modified Stapleford system. This will ensure fair & accurate scoring throughout the tour, allowing for a level playing field for all participants. Masters 2024 Leaderboard: Live updates, scores for golf leaders Saturday at Augusta National

The third round of the the 2024 Masters  begins with a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard. Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler, and Max Homa lead the field at 6-under ahead of Saturday's action from Augusta National Golf Club.

Round 1 of the Masters tournament got off to a rough start due to heavy rain and thunderstorms, which caused a  delay  of two and a half hours. DeChambeau took the lead with a 7-under-65 to open the first day of action from Augusta. Due to the delay, many golfers had to wrap up Round 1 Friday morning, including Tiger Woods.
