‣ Chania – Access

chania tourist information office

Chania has all the modern facilities to accommodate your arrival. A modern port, a state-of-the-art international airport. There are many frequent connections from Piraeus port and flights from all over Greece and abroad, making access to Chania convenient and easy.

The easiest and quickest access to Chania is of course by airplane. Chania airport offers daily connections with Athens, and other cities around Greece. During the summer the flight number increases vastly, offering direct flights from various European cities to Chania. The flight from Athens is a short one, taking approximately 40 – 45 minutes.

Chania International Airport “Ioannis Daskaloyannis” is about 14km away from the city, and its known as CHQ in IATA codes. It offers connections by KTEL bus (interurban) , or taxis to the city of Chania.

The port of Chania, is Souda, one of the largest and most important in Greece.  It is located around 6km away from the city. It can be reached easily using city buses (urban/blue colored) or taxi. Ships offer daily routes to and from Piraeus.

On the south coast of Chania, ships depart from the port of Sfakia, and reach all the major southern coastal points of Chania. Some of the most beautiful tourist destinations of Chania are located there. Places like Loutro, Paleochora, Sougia, Agia Roumeli.

The KTEL (interurban bus service) of Chania is a regular bus service that offers access to Chania from the rest of Crete and other locations around Greece. Its central station is located in the city center, on Kydonia street, from where depart most itineraries. ‣ Health Care – Hospitals

chania tourist information office

Chania’s major medical needs are served by Chania General Hospital “St. George”, a 450-bed facility located just off the National Road, on the outskirts of the city, in the village of Mournies. It opened in 2000 and the quality of health care provided is quite high. Many of the doctors have trained abroad and speak one or more foreign languages. The one drawback is a lack of nursing staff. Patients are expected to provide their own basic nursing care, either in the form of a family member or a private nurse. A number of British and other European nurses are now working as private nurses in the Chania area. The hospital also operates out-patient clinics for non-emergency complaints. Public Health Centres are found in most of the larger villages around Chania.

There are also a number of private medical clinics in Chania which you may prefer if you have private insurance. They offer modern equipment and technology, good doctors and nursing care, as well as amenities such as private rooms with television and telephone.

For minor medical complaints, it’s often enough to go to the local pharmacy. Greek pharmacists are highly trained and many speak English. They are also able to dispense medicines which in other countries would require a doctor’s prescription. such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and painkillers. Homeopathic and herbal remedies are widely available.

British and other EU nationals are entitled to free medical treatment and hospital care with practitioners within the public health system. You are covered if you are working in Greece and contributing to one of the National Insurance schemes or through reciprocal schemes as the European Health Insurance Card or E121 form.

Dentists in Crete, those working in the both public and private sectors, are well-trained and can be found in all main towns. With private dentists you must pay for your treatment in cash, but it is worth noting that dental treatment is much cheaper than in Northern Europe.

The Discoveries Of

Chania, Crete Travel Guide: Discover the Top Things to Do

Get ready to discover the ultimate Chania, Crete travel guide. Where to stay, what to do and the best restaurants to dine at.

Chania, the island’s second-largest city sits on Crete’s western coast. Chania has an incredibly rich history; you’ll see traces of the Venetian, Ottoman, and Neoclassical periods dotted around the town.

But there’s more to this place than just its past. Today Chania is filled with brilliant restaurants, postcard-worthy beaches, and bustling markets.

It’s no wonder that I fell swiftly in love with the city on my last trip to Crete, is it?

If you’re planning a trip to Chania, you’ll want to keep this guide handy – I’m about to spill the secrets of this gorgeous destination. Where to go, what to do, and where to stay. Let’s dive in.

Looking for somewhere to stay in Chania? I love the Porto Veneziano Hotel . It sits on the waterfront of Chania’s Venetian Harbour and offers exquisite views of the area.

Top 5 Things to do in Chania, Crete

Explore chania’s old town.

Chania

Even if you’re struggling for time, I can’t recommend visiting Chania’s Old Town enough. This charming part of the city has four districts with narrow, pedestrian-only streets making it easy to explore on foot.

As you wander around, you’ll see an abundance of historic buildings from various periods, including the Neoclassical periods, all adding to the charm and character of the area.

Stop at Kondylaki, the main street in the Jewish District, if you’re looking for a souvenir to take home. Oh, and if you’re after tasty Greek food (which you definitely should be), make your way to the Splantzia District, which has the city’s largest number of cafes and restaurants.

Visit the Old Venetian Harbour

Chania Crete

Near Old Town Chania, you’ll find the picturesque Venetian Harbour. But this isn’t just another pretty thing to look at – this particular Venetian Harbour is one of the oldest harbours in Greece, with the earliest records of it dating to 1356.

This area of Chania is rich in history, and near the harbour, you’ll find landmarks such as the Firk Fortress, Giali Tzami Mosque, Grand Arsenal, and Venetian Lighthouse. As an added bonus, the harbour boasts an array of seafood eateries, traditional Cretan restaurants, and cafes, all with incredible views.

Check out the Municipal Garden of Chania

Now, if you’re a plant lover keen on searching for greenery, I recommend visiting the Municipal Garden of Chania. Sitting at the base of the Chania’s White Mountain range, the gardens are a popular hangout for visitors and locals looking for a calm and relaxing day out.

The garden is over 150 years old and is home to the endangered Cretan mountain goat (very, very cute), native birds, and countless exotic plants. Pack a picnic basket or grab something from the onsite cafe and spend a sunny afternoon here.

Eat at The Municipal Market of Chania

 Municipal Market of Chania

If you ask me, one of the best ways to discover a new place is to try its food. And there’s no better place to do so in Crete than at the Municipal Market of Chania.

This covered market spans over 4000 square metres and dates back to 1911. You’ll find the freshest produce, meat, fish, and the best olive oil. There are also numerous restaurants peppered around serving up mouthwatering gyros, lamb, and other tasty Greek dishes.

Laze Around at Elafonissi Beach

Elafonissi

Would it really be a Greek holiday if you didn’t stop at the beach? Definitely not.

If there’s one beach you won’t want to miss, it’s Elafonissi. It’s one of the best beaches in Crete, famous for its contrasting pink and white sands and gorgeous turquoise waters.

Alright, so the beach is about 47 miles (76 km) from Chania, but that just makes it an excellent place for a day trip . Pack sunscreen, a wide-brim hat , and beach towels , and prepare to bask in the sun. It’s glorious.

Brilliant Things to See & Do in Greece, Chania

You’ll learn about the history of Cretan food and prepare tasty dishes using only the best ingredients. At the end of it all, you’ll enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Walk Along the Seawall to the Lighthouse

Chania Crete

As I’ve mentioned before, the great thing about Chania is that all its main attractions are close to each other. If you walk along the seawall at the Old Venetian Harbour, you’ll eventually land at the Venetian Lighthouse.

Built in the 17th century, the lighthouse is visible from anywhere in the harbour. Although it isn’t open to the public, there is a set of stairs on the first level that you can climb to catch stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and Old Town.

Visit the Archaeological Museum of Chania

Archaeological Museum of Chania, Greece

If you enjoy learning about the history of where you’re visiting, you might want to add the Archaeological Museum of Chania to your list.

The museum sits inside one of Chania’s largest churches and has an impressive collection of artefacts, mainly from the Neolithic and Roman periods. It sits in the centre of Chania’s Old Town and is a quick walk from the Venetian Harbour.

It’s not big enough to take up a significant chunk of your day, but it’s well worth popping in for an hour or so.

Explore the Maritime Museum of Chania & Firka Fortress

Maritime Museum of Crete in Chania, Crete

For a different kind of history excursion, a visit to the Maritime Museum of Chania might interest you. It sits right at the heart of the harbour inside the Firka Fortress and provides great insight into Crete’s rich maritime history.

You’ll discover the seafaring periods of the Byzantines, Venetians, and Turks and how the island fought against Nazi invasion during WWII. After an informative tour, climb to the top of Firka Castle, where you can take in majestic panoramic views of Chania.

Enjoy the Nightlife on Daliani Street

After a long day of walking and exploring, you’ll be glad to hear that it’s time to unwind in Chania’s nightlight capital, Daliani Street.

During the day, it’s relatively quiet, but once the sun sets, watch as the restaurants and bars come alive with activity. Visitors and locals flock to the area to enjoy a good meal and drink, and it’s a great place to end the day.

Visit a Winery

You know me – I love a winery. In fact, Crete is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in Europe, so it’s no surprise that the locals love a bit of wine.

Paying a visit to a local winery is a fantastic way to learn about the different types of grapes grown in the area and the history of winemaking in Crete. And of course, at the end of it all, you’ll enjoy some wine tasting – bonus.

Must-Try Bars & Restaurants in Chania Town

Kouzina e.p.e.

Since 2008, this family restaurant in the Old Town has put smiles on countless faces with its hearty homemade dishes. Kouzina E.P.E specialise in Mediterranean cuisine, also serving traditional Cretan dishes like Boureki, a fish soup.

Salis Restaurant Chania Crete-2

If you’re hanging around the Venetian Harbour, consider stopping by Salis. It sits right along the seafront of the harbour and specialises in traditional and contemporary Greek dishes with a fantastic wine list to compliment its food.

Chania Ela Restaurant

Chania Ela Restaurant sits in one of the historically richest buildings in the Old Town. First built by the Jewish community brought to Crete, it’s now a buzzing restaurant serving tasty Greek food and local drinks such as Raki.

Incredible Crete

20°C / 68°F Chania

#incredible_crete.

The city of Chania, a monument in all respects, is built on the ruins of Minoan Kydonia, while the traces left behind by the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans are still evident everywhere; the walls that surround the old city, the dry docks, the Egyptian lighthouse, the monasteries, the mosques, and so many more sites for visitors to discover in just a few hours.

Just outside the city, amphitheatrically positioned, is the tomb of statesman Eleftherios Venizelos, while in the historic Chalepa district visitors encounter the great politician’s Home – Museum, as well as the newly built Archaeological Museum of Chania. A tour of the many remarkable museums of Chania will complete the image of the area’s historical wealth for visitors.  Ancient Aptera, one of the most important city-states of antiquity, is located above the bay of Souda, one of the largest natural ports of the Mediterranean.

Day and night, Chania is a lively city, with Cretan delicacies mingling with the finest cuisines, the sound of the Cretan lyra followed by music from all over the world, drinking, talking, and dancing.

Beyond the city, the provinces are filled with hospitable villages, olive groves, orange groves, vineyards, and vegetable gardens, with the scattered ruins of ancient settlements, Byzantine churches, Venetian villas, and Ottoman forts.

This is also the home of the most famous and award-winning beaches in the world, such as Balos and Elafonisi or Lafonisi, while the landscape changes completely from north to south, offering a wealth of experiences to visitors. The north, with Agia Marina, Platanias, Georgioupoli, etc., has been developed for tourism, with large hotel units, organised beaches, and lots of infrastructure. The south offers a wilder and more unique landscape, with mountains coming all the way down to the sea, the deep waters of the South Sea of Crete, and sandy beaches that alternate with beaches with pebbles and large stones, in Sfakia, Paleochora, Sougia and elsewhere. Gavdos, the southernmost tip of Europe, is a particularly special destination, with its singular aura, its unique landscapes, and its people.

Crete reveals other secrets to those who stray from the most popular destinations, discovering hiking trails and hidden beaches, climbing the mountains, descending into the canyons — the most famous being that of Samaria — finding villages forgotten by time, taking in the scent of herbs such as thyme and rosemary, tasting honey, cheese, crushed olives, snails, and antikristo (a traditional technique for cooking meat).

Amazing Journeys Through Europe

Chania Tourism (Greece): A Complete Guide

Crete’s second-largest town Chania lies along the northern coast of Crete and commands a sizeable portion of the tourist flow that comes to Greece. Natural beauty, an amalgamation of cultures, wine and gastronomy and the pleasant contrast between the old town and the new town of Chania are some of its selling points.

Chania Harbour

The Old Town of Chania is a pretty puzzle of paved pedestrian roads and little boutiques and cafes crowding against tavernas, bars and tattoo parlours. The old town full of Turkish and Venetian buildings is perched next to the ancient harbour and this is the matrix that developed the entire urban area gradually.

The new town, in contrast, is modern, shinier and equipped with cosmopolitan restaurants, bars and hotels. Both are delightful and a photographer’s treat.

A Short Video

Attractions and Activities

Walking is the most important activity you could do in Chania. Simply stroll alongside the ruins of the lovely Venetian fortifications that used to surround the old town… these have now crumbled away leaving just the western and eastern sides. The southern edge of the old town merges with the new city via many streets (principally Halidon Street) and the northern edge is flanked by sea.

Walk up to the small hillock that contains the centre of the old town of Kasteli and breathe in its historic air. Next to it is the Splantzia quarters. The old town’s main square is called Eleftherios Venizelos Square . On the western side is the Topanas district which was the Christian quarter…it is very picturesque with its army of old buildings. The Jewish quarters are included in the Topanas area and are to the North West.

The Tabakaria area had an erstwhile function of serving as an industrial centre of tanneries. This area still has a couple of tanneries that present an intriguing picture….. The architecture is visually striking, to say the least.

The road leading up to the Old Harbour has an iconic structure…. the 21-meter high Lighthouse is a good destination to walk up to. The fantastic view and the ancient architecture around create a mystical effect. A bottle of Cretan wine from Daskalogianni Street will be a lovely company.

chania tourist information office

The marina/ Akti Enoseos and Akti Kountouriotou along with Alti Tompazi contain the cream of the nightlife here along with the best of ancient architecture. Look out for the profusion of wooden fishing boats in the area and the promenade that is lined with seafood specialising stalls.

The eastern part still has the Ottoman Turk Mosque …a relic of 1645 when Chania was captured by the Turks. It’s also known as the Kucjk Hassan Mosque or the Mosque of the Janissaries . However, since 1923, it no longer operates as a mosque, it is now used as a cafe as well as a Tourist Information Office.

And stretching further beyond the mosque are the arsenals that were used by the Venetians and a lovely yachting marina that contains a re-assembled 15th-century ship. A breakwater protects the entire area… exploring the harbour will claim a couple of hours of your time.

Go through Old Venetian Harbour of Chania to know what can you see and do at the harbour.

Spend some of that time in the Maritime Museum that’s at the western corner inside the Firkaus fortress on the opposite side of the Venetian lighthouse. It’s in a beautiful red Venetian building that had a grim past… it was used as a prison earlier. Crete’s ties with the sea and her vessels are showcased here right through the Minoan to the Venetian to the Turk and German invasions. Expect amazing models of ships and a display of nautical equipment along with photos and paintings.

Horse Carriage, Chania

Eleftherios Venizelos House (1880) and the ancient French school that now hosts the department of architecture are major highlights of the old town. The beautiful churches of Agia Magdalini and the Church of Evangelistria (both dated around 1900) along with 1882 dated Prince George’s Palace are jewels in the new town’s cityscape.

The Evangelistria at Plateia Mitropoleos is a Greek orthodox church with a very interesting history. This stands on the exact spot where a Venetian church stood thousands of years ago the church was razed to the ground by the invading Turks who spitefully built a soap factory there though they didn’t dare destroy the Virgin Mary statue. The factory went kaput multiple times and the owner organised a fundraiser to give back Chania its church….locals also call it Panagia Trimartiri (3 aisles dedicated to Saint Nicholas, virgin Mary and 3 Cappadocian fathers stand here).

The Mary Magdalene church is Russian style (a lovely garden surrounds it) and is located in Halepa…it was built by Prince George and Queen Olga was present in its grand inauguration ceremony.

The archaeological museum inside the vault of San Francesco church is a relic of the Minoan times when the old city of Kydonia stood here. Archaeological finds excavated from west Crete dated to the Roman era from the Neolithic era are hosted here. Expect to find Minoan rare ceramics. Startlingly beautiful burial urns, clay tablets, gold jewellery etc, bird faced women, fierce ceramic bulls, a mosaic floor preserved from the 3 rd century and Emperor Hadrian’s bust are other notable exhibits.

Street in Old Town, Chania

For a different flavour of the island visit the Koum Kapi district …. it’s named the Gate of Sand that’s just beyond the east walls of the old town. Halikoutes or a group of Bedouins hailing from North Africa had settled here in the ottoman area. Though restaurants and cafes now populate it, relics of its past can still be seen.

A great activity to indulge in while you are in Chania is to watch a movie at any of the outdoor theatres…this is a popular practice all over Greece. The open-air movie theatre Attikon in the Halepa area shows blockbusters and Kipos Municipal Cinema that nestles in the beautiful municipal garden shows fringe and cultural movies… buy the local newspaper ‘Chaniotika Nea’ from any kiosk in town and check the movie schedule.

Go 17 km east of Chania Bus Station and you can see 3 gorgeous monasteries. 1612 dated Agia Triada that’s set against orange orchards and olive gardens, rests on a cloistered courtyard where you will see monks selling hand-pressed olive oil. A short drive away is the fortress resembling Governeto that’s even older (around 1535).

Follow the footpath here and walk to the Bear Cave which used to host these ferocious mammals and finally descend 140 steps till you go to Katholiko that’s a sixth-century monastery embedded into a cliff. After you see the monasteries go to Stavros Bay where you can enjoy a peaceful swim ….a famous movie Zorba the Greek was shot here.

Elafonisi is about 2 hours of drive away from Chania ….find a lovely islet here where migratory birds from Europe perch in. the sands here are famous for their pink hue and the water is sapphire blue…relax on the sunbeds and click nonstop pictures.

The mountains of Crete are slashed by deep gorges and the 18 km Samaria is the longest of them. Organised hikes are arranged here and you can go to the Omalos village that’s 42 km south of Chania to participate in the hike. Explore the cruel terrain and look out for kri-kri (Cretan mountain goats) on the way. A gorge leads to the sea at Ayia Roumeli which has a black sand beach. You can catch the ferry from here to Sfakia and then a local bus to Chania….an exhilarating full-day plan.

Drive 18 km southwest of Chania and you will find the Botanical Park that lets you understand how rich and fertile Crete’s soil is. You will find the park at the foot of the White Mountains….walk along the snake-like 2 km path and you will reach a fragrant garden blooming with rich fruit and petals. You have to buy a ticket but bottled water and a walking stick come free. Look at the trees of Olives, grapes, bananas, avocados, thyme, mint, and sage in all their fresh beauty. A café restaurant here serves dishes made with the park produce.

When in Chania going on a wine and olives tour is an enjoyable activity…it exposes you to the twin gastronomic pride of Crete. All tour operators have their own favourites but the standard wine road covers the areas of Kissamos, Mousourai, kolymbari, voukolies etc. some famous wineries you should target are the Karavitikis vineyards, Manousakis winery (foot of the white mountains), Anoskeli winery (producers of olive oil too) and Ktima Loupaki.

The foot of the White Mountains also has a pretty famous olive farm (Apokoronas in west Crete) where you can learn all about the art of curing, storing and virtues of olives besides viewing an incredible variety of healthy fruit.

You will probably want to pay a visit to the Olive Tree Museum at Vouves too (most wine and olive tours have this in their schedule). The world’s most ancient olive tree is supposed to be more than 3000 years old grows in Ano Vouves and has gigantic hollow roots that come up straight from the earth in 12 meters perimeter.

Go through this Viator’s Webpage to find out about numerous tours in Chania.

Food and Drinks

When in Crete don’t forget to have some of the culinary specialities here like sweet mini cheese puffs (kalitsounia), lamb with chicory and firm Cretan bread (dacos) with tomato, cheese and the famous Cretan olive oil. Become a little braver and try the boubouristi (fried snails popped in oil) and the Haniokto boureki (vegetable patty from Chania) along with kserotigana (pastry dipped in honey).

Pork Souvlaki is a tastier, runnier and greasier version of the traditional pita bread sandwich. Gyro as it’s known as has delicious pork, fries, Greek sauce and some veggies wrapped in pita bread….this famous Greek speciality is found all over Chania. A glass of beautiful red Cretan wine ( Maraouvas ) or Raki distilled from pomace should accompany your meal. Otherwise have diktamo that’s a herby tasty concoction (Greeks describe it as erontas or love).

Incidentally, the Cretan diet is globally recognised as one of the healthiest and tastiest relying heavily on herbs and weeds and freshly plucked vegetables. Seafood, dairy, honey, virgin olive oil and fennel are prominently found in the food of Chania.

Portes is one of the most incredible restaurants in Chania. Portes literally means tears and the whole pathway to the restaurant is lined with old doors….the owner Sysana is an amazing hostess and all the food here will remind you strangely of home.

Chania beach has Akrogiali Taverna that serves excellent feta stuffed calamari and bakalava…the view of the ocean makes everything tastier. Tomikio Tavern is on a street in the old town that serves great lamb asparagus, rabbit stifado.

The Agia marina has Me Gusta Beach Restaurant that has an amazing ocean view and a great alcohol list. Try the mussels, Greek salad and the halloumi with vegetables…the owners here are Scandinavian.

In the Kalamaki area, there is Corinna Star Restaurant which serves excellent mixed souvlaki and tuna based dishes. There is a great wine and microbrewery beer list too. There’s the Nanou Donut House in Kissamou which has been making and serving Donuts by the traditional recipe since 1979. Try the ones with Bueno cream and you will be hooked.

There are lots of bakeries in Chania and some of the best of its bread are baked in a wood oven at Chrisotomos in Ikopou. This is not merely a bakery…. They serve amazing quality Cretan traditional food like lamb stamnagathi, staka with fried eggs and sheep in pepper. The Greek-style doughnuts or the Loukoumades served here are loaded in syrup and have cinnamon/ nutmeg topping…the best part is that a plate of this comes free with a bottle of Raki.

Glossitses which has a great harbour view serves excellent tuna souvlaki…they are a fair trade eatery that serves directly from the fishermen. You will get complimentary orange with a knife with their raki bottle. While on this subject it’s good to know that the oranges of Crete are in profusion and they are found almost everywhere…they are unrivalled in their juicy sweetness.

Chania is full of out of the way quaint places to eat and the Pasteleria de Dana in Isodion is one such gem. This serves excellent caramel panna cotta, baklava and sweet pastries.

Koukouvaya that’s near the Venizelos Graves serves superlative Greek salad that’s ultra-fresh…ingredients are picked and cut after your order. You should come here around sunset and enjoy the fabulous view while tasting the Knaafeh string pastry that’s a distinct Middle Eastern taste.

Antikristo is an ordinary-looking restaurant set in a tiny village that’s between Chania city and the airport. All that’s served is cooked in a pucka fire in the kitchen which is open to view from the restaurant. Try the pork in orange sauce, beef in wine pate and aubergine salad.

For fine dining visit Serenissma on Skouton that’s presided by a chef who had long stints in Michelin starrers. There are 3 separate menus; meat, fish and vegetarian and you will be spoilt for choice. Everything is delicious and well-presented but the cannelloni is exceptional. Food wine pairings are done beautifully here and the hostess is ever gracious.

Kariatis in the old harbour area serves nice Italian food in a classy setting. Try the pasta and pizzas (gluten-free!!) and the seafood all of which is served in grand portions. They serve free chocolate truffles at the end of the meal sometimes.

Mylos Club in Platanias (a nightspot hub just 10 minutes away from Chania) is set right near the towering waves and as you dance you will feel the music of the sea. The place is stunningly designed by a French engineer from steel, stone and wood. The splendid club is also in the same area and is well known for its exotic cocktail list and young crowd. Another big draw here is the Tropicano Club which has frequent karaoke nights that go on all night.

Villa Mercedes is in the Agia Marina area and it presents yet another chic musical venue in Chania. If ‘sophisticated’ is what you want then Senso Club in Enetiki Tafros is your answer. The bouncers there screen visitors very carefully and if you manage to get inside you will get access to amazing music and the best dance performances.

The old port area is a great place to explore nightlife options. Visit Synagogi in Kondilaki Street near the old port….this is an open-air bar in the Jewish synagogue that’s famous for its atmospheric air. Nama offers Mediterranean food, drinks and coffee from morning to night.

An evening stroll in Dalliani street presents a grand opportunity for interaction with the locals and a refreshing way to spend the evening… this is where the Chania citizen goes to a party, gossip and sip on raki at the numerous cafes and bars (look out for the Turkish minaret ) that are open till wee hours of the morning; the minaret bar is the most elegant of the lot.

Incidentally, Dalliani Street connects the new town to the old harbour and is named after the 1821 Epirus hero Hatzimihali Daliani. The rather mystic looking Kibar is also known as the ‘Monastery of Charles’; this is a bar in a 16th-century building that was once a catholic monastery.

Nobody really visits Chania with the intention of shopping and anyway the sightseeing opportunities will consume all your time. However, the city is the main shopping hub of Crete and there are a few things that you should definitely pick up when you come here.

Your first buys should be at the Market Hall / Chania Municipal Market … there’s delish Cretan food here that’s fully authentic. Find meat, kalitsounia Cretan pastry, olives, cheese pie and mountain tea. This is where you can fill up your bags with local soap, olive-based products and jars of Cretan olive oil (supposedly the best in the world). Shop for unique food like handmade cookies (used for weddings), wreaths made of bread, full-fat cheese made of sheep milk (protected origin food), fresh staka butter etc. Meanwhile gorge on incredibly aromatic rice cooked in meat juice, goat roast, sea urchin salad and fish soup while shopping.

A great place to shop for bottles of Cretan olive oil, handmade soaps and creams with olives and jars of pickled/ cured/ dried olives is the Olive Farm at Apokoromas near the foot of the White Mountains. This is where you can learn Cretan cooking and attend wine seminars too.

Skridlof Street is also called Leather Street and the whole lane is filled with leather makers. Buy great quality leather purses, sandals, handbags, purses etc. from here. Then there is Sifaka Street that’s also a metal workers Lane where you can get traditional utensils, showpieces and artefacts that are all handcrafted.

Old Town has Diesel, Al Bies, Harris Cotton, Hamam, Tsigaloglou all of which sell interesting apparel and accessories. Also visit the stores of Antoniou (Greek jewellery), Memorabilia (souvenirs, gifts), Asteriou Technes (art, collectables) and Kiwi (Indonesian products). For groceries and essentials, you can visit the Mega Inka supermarkets in Agia Marina. The new town has more cosmopolitan shopping options like Marks and Spencers, Sephora etc.

While in Crete it’s natural that gawking at the landscape and savouring the gastronomy will take precedence over filling up your bags.

How to Reach

The international airport of Chania/ Ioannis Daskalogiiannis is just 14 km away from Chania town in the Akrotiri area. Some European airlines like Ryan Air fly all year long to Chania and connect many European cities. Athens and Thessaloniki are well connected to Chania airport. Non-European cities are connected to Chania majorly via Athens. Like all Greek tourist hot spots frequency of flights to Chania increases in the summers.

Getting Around

A bus runs directly from Chania airport to the city centre many times a day starting from 6.00 am to 10.45 p.m. You can make the journey in 90 minutes flat and tickets are cheap …. however, there is just one bus making the waiting time long. It’s faster and easier to catch a taxi from outside the airport.

There are no train networks in the Crete islands….the rugged landscape makes laying down lines difficult.

The only medium of inland local transport in Chania, bus networks are thankfully extensive. The KTEL or Greek public bus transport company operates and runs all buses in Crete and you can take buses to explore various landmarks in and around Chania as well as travel to other important towns and villages in Crete like Kastelli, Kolimbari, Vrisses, Rethymnon, Perama, Drossia and Heraklion.

Buses run on time and the frequency & route coverage get more intensive in the peak season (summers). Stations have luggage lockers where you can securely keep your stuff. Bus stops are marked in Greek in small blue font and that makes them difficult to locate.

You can travel to Sfakia (an important tourist spot) from Chania via bus and then take ferries to the villages of Paleohora, Loutro, Sougia and the lovely Elafonisi beach. Ravelling anywhere in and around Chania is a pleasure so soaking in the scenic beauty should be your priority rather than the fastest means of conveyance.

There are daily ferry links from Piraeus to Chania and in summers ferries operate 24*7 on this route (taking the Anek Lines ferries is recommended). Ferries land and commence from Souda port that’s just 4 km from the main town. However other islands are not that well connected to Souda though there are alternatives.

You can catch ferries to Gythio, Kythira and Antikythira from Kissamos port that’s an hour’s drive away from Chania. To the south of Chania, there is a small port called Paleochora that runs ferries to Gavdos Island thrice a day.

One of the loveliest ways to move around is to rent any one of the municipal bikes in town…it can be availed instantly. There is something called the Automatic bike sharing system of Chania municipality where you (if you are a tourist) need to sign up for the service online/ station kiosk by paying a nominal fee. You will get a cycloCard and after ascertaining its condition you can use the bike freely. Returns are made at the numerous free slots in the station where you can simply lock the bike and leave. Greek citizens can avail this service free from the municipality office.

Another lovely way to get around is by walking… the narrow alleys and winding paths of Chania make this a convenient and healthy transport option.

When to visit

Summers are peak tourist season so between June to late September the beaches are at their liveliest, transport networks are denser and every little café is open. However, ticket prices and hotel prices soar along with the crowds. October (beautiful weather) is a good time to visit and so is May (lots of wildflowers) if you want fewer crowds.

May is great for hiking to the 3 gorgeous peninsulas of Akrotiri, Gramvoussa and Rodopi.  Easter and the wine festival (in spring) are both lovely but crowded times to visit.

What to do in Chania – A travel guide for Crete newcomers.

Chania and I – that was love at first sight. An unexpected one because after all I had come to Greece in search of iconic white and blue houses, and kittens. Chania only delivered in the kitten department but I didn’t care, there was grit and charm to the island and its people. Chania is both a city and a region in the northwest part of Crete. Until 1971 Chania was the capital of Crete but was replaced by Heraklion. If you are not a cat lover you may ask what to do in Chania? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered and show you some of my favorite things to see & do in town and the Chania region.

HOW TO GET TO CHANIA

While Crete’s main airport is in Heraklion, Chania has its own international airport (CHQ). You can either fly via Athens or Thessaloniki but when traveling during high season you will also find many direct flights from various European destinations.

While you can use the public busses to get around in Crete it is not something I have tried and can comment on. I have always had a rental car in Crete and it is something I wholeheartedly recommend – the island is perfect for road trips and traffic is not too crazy even in Chania town.

My rental car came from PANCAR who delivered it directly to me in front of airport arrivals and picked it up from me in front of departures. No lengthy trip to an office, no waiting around, and when I left someone was already waiting for me at the departure gate to receive my keys.

From the airport, it is about 20 minutes to get to Chania town by car.

WHAT TO DO IN CHANIA – Things to do, see & explore

Small shrine on the side of the road in Crete

Chania Old Town

T he old town of Chania is easily explored by foot and as I learned best done early in the morning when the streets are empty except for a few early bird cats. Then again, the light is most beautiful for sunset so maybe come back and stay for dinner.

Street lamp and vespa at Venetian Harbor, Chania

In the morning get yourself a Greek coffee and wander along the Venetian Harbor, walk to the lighthouse, and take pictures of the Kucjk Hassan Mosque, also called Mosque of the Janissaries.

Afterward, get lost in the small roads and alleys – Chania Old Town reminded me of Venice (duh) but also historic towns like Mdina in Malta .

Bicycle and cactus on chania road corner

Museums fans should check out the Nautical Museum of Crete (Maritime Museum) and the Archaeological Museum of Chania. Needless to say, I was too busy playing with cats and drinking raki but I heard they are great museums.

Beaches in Chania

Falasarna beach in Chania

You don’t need to venture far to explore some of the best beaches in Crete. There are plenty of opportunities to take a dip close to the city center and I was quite impressed even just seeing the water quality in the harbor. If you head over to Koum Kapi just outside of the old town you will find a long promenade along the bay and some of the clearest water. There is not really a beach to speak of but a tiny stretch of sand with just enough space for a few towels. However, it is a great place to take a dip in the morning as the water is shallow and warm. All along the quay wall, stairs are leading down to the water and there are even some showers and hooks along the wall where you can hang your towel.

Koum Kapi beach

If you are in the mood for a proper beach day head to famous Elafonisi or Balos Beach. Both are great options for day trips from Chania as the drive to Elafonisi in the south will take about 1.5 and Balos requires a hike or a boat trip. If you like the idea of a hike make sure to check your rental car’s paperwork – the drive to where you can park your car is a bit precarious and some car rentals explicitly forbid it unless you have a 4×4.

Pink sand at Falasarna beach

Falasarna beach is a good compromise as it is not too far and easily accessible and is just like Elafonisi considered a pink beach. Mind you, after seeing the pink beach in Komodo I have realized that a lot of pink is done in photoshop as is the case here, however, you can definitely find small patches with rose-tinted crushed coral.

While you are there make sure to stop at Liokalyvo, a lovely beach restaurant perfect for a beer, a cocktail, or a light lunch. They also have sun loungers on the beach but I thought them quite pricey with EUR 25 (and no other customers around) so I choose to put my towel down in the sand.

DIVING IN Chania

View over Chora Sfakion from the ocean

Crete is an island, Chania stretching over two coasts so of course, scuba diving is one of the activities in Chania! You have the choice to either head south to Chora Sfakion or stay in the north to explore Crete’s underwater world. Both coasts offer some beautiful dive spots though the south is definitely a few degrees colder if such details matter to you (they do for me!) The drive to Chora Sfakion will take you about 1.5 hours and take you through the mountains – be mindful of that when driving back as the altitude might be too high after deep dives. In the north there are quite a few dive centers in Chania which will take to beautiful caves or wrecks – a must is a dive at the Elephant Cave.

Elephant Cave in Crete

Even if you are not a scuba diver, there are plenty of great water activities in Chania you can sign up for:

Visit a Cretan Winery

Close up of dark blue grapes

Did you know that wine is huge in Crete? The island has quite a few of its own varietals and over the years wine has become a booming business. Long gone are the days of too sweet Greek wine in huge carafes and wine from Crete can compete with the rest of the (wine) world and doesn’t just score while you are on holiday.

Wine is part of the daily Cretan diet so it should be part of your trip to Chania! Rain or shine, there are a couple of beautiful wineries around where you can discover a few new favorites during a tasting.

Karavitakis Winery

Karavitakis is a boutique winery in the Pontikiana Village where Nikos and his father have put their expertise and love for wine together to create some stunning bottles. The motto is “Diverse terroir, complex wines” and international varietals are given as much attention as local grapes from Crete. The results are memorable and a lot of fun to drink.

They have two beautiful tasting areas, perfect even when it gets in hot in summer, there is a small church on the property, and plenty of space to enjoy a glass or two.

Some of their amazing varietals include the local Vidiano, my favorite the Moschato Spinas, and an award-winning dessert wine – the Liastos Romeiko. Best of all: they have a bottle for each budget and occasion.

Wine barrels and entrance to the cellar at Karavitakis

Manousakis Winery

Manousakis Winery is a wine farm in Chania is run by Alexandra Manousakis and her husband and offers the perfect mix of traditions, great wine, and Instagram-worthy locations – the staff even wears cool  make wine not war  t-shirts.

You can choose between different tasting flights depending on your taste and (drinking) stamina as well as sample some local delicacies. Try the Romeiko, a varietal native to the area around Chania, and the Nostos Roussanne which quickly became my favorite.

Their restaurant menu offers a few lovely Cretan classics like spinach and cheese pie, dakos which are barley rusks with grated tomato and mizithra goat cheese, and the best dolmades I have had in Greece.

The oldest olive tree in Crete

Ancient Olive Tree in Crete

While many lay the claim to fame, there can only be one tree with the title of the oldest olive tree in the world. The ancient Olive Tree of Vouves lives in Crete not far from the Karavitakis winery. It is said to be between 2,000 and 5,000 years old (scientists are having a hard time narrowing it down further) and is still producing olives today.

Branches of the tree were used for the victors’ wreaths in the Olympics before and so there is also a hedge in the shape of the Olympic Rings in front of the tree.

If you want to know more about olive trees and olive oil production check out the adjacent Olive Tree Museum of Vouves. Alternatively have a coffee and some seriously yummy olive oil cake at the cafe next to it.

Botanical Park & Gardens Of Crete

For more olive trees and plenty of other greenery, head to the Botanical Park & Gardens , one of my favorite places in Crete.

Botanical Garden in Crete

The garden has three different climate zones: Tropical, Mediterranean, and Alpine, and offers species from all three. Book yourself a private tour with owner Petros Marinakis, alternatively take a walk yourself. There is plenty to see and explore and I will guarantee that even botanists might learn a thing or two. Who knew that stevia was a plant and that there is a tree so toxic it will put you in a coma should you fall asleep under it?!

Make sure to were sensible shoes as paths through the Crete botanical garden are quite steep in some areas.  I recommend you come in the morning to have enough time to explore while it is not too hot yet. Make sure to stay for lunch – they have one of the best restaurants in Crete! And yes, you can buy not only olive oil but local honey, spices, and jams in their very own shop.

Old Chania Market

Covered all with visitors and stalls at Old Chania Market

The Old Chania Market while not comparable to some of the other great market halls in Europe is a nice enough location to take some pictures and buy some souvenirs (maybe not a whole eel though!). There are various fruit and veggie sellers, butchers and fishmongers, and a lot of stalls that sell souvenirs and knickknacks.

It is the perfect pitstop if you are on your way to Bougatsa Iordanis as they are in the same part of town.

Where to stay in Chania

Annika Ziehen in a mirror reflection in Chania

There are plenty of great options for accommodation in Chania – from budget to luxury. Obviously one of the most charming places to stay in Chania old town and the Harbor area. However, keep in mind that this is pretty much a car-free area so you will need to find parking somewhere else. In the east of the old town you will find the East Moat Theatre Parking and in the west Talos Square public parking which are both free. Mind you, depending on what time you arrive you may need a bit of luck to get a spot.

My two favorite places to stay in Chania old town are Fagotto Art Residence or the newly opened J&G Suites.

chania tourist information office

If you are coming by car and prefer a garage check out the AVRA City Hotel. It is not located in the old town but nearby making it the perfect central city hotel in Chania if you are traveling by car. The hotel itself is light and airy, and the rooms are very spacious especially for a Chania city hotel. Mine came with a small desk, a balcony, and plenty of space for my oversized suitcase. Another highlight and not a given in hotels in Crete: the wifi was fast and excellent.

The best part of the AVRA is its location (and their dog!) though. A short walk will take you to the old city and the old harbor but you are somewhat away from the tourist crowds. Next to the hotel, you will find kiosks, supermarkets, cafes, pharmacies, and the likes of H&M, Sephora, and Body Shop.

Room at Avra City Hotel

If you wanted to stay by the beach in Chania I can recommend the Koum Kapi Boutique Apartment. The flat is on the ground floor on a small road right by Koum Kapi beach which is actually quite lovely – in the morning you can just wrap yourself in your towel and go for a swim you are that close! The apartment itself is wheelchair accessible and really spacious making it the perfect place to stay in Chania if you needed something longer. You have a big kitchen, lounge area, bedroom and a bathroom with a washing machine!

There is on-street parking and you are within walking distance to all the major sights in Chania.

During my last night after I returned from Plakias, I stayed at the Koum Kapi Boutique Apartments for one night. I booked this place as it was closer to the airport and because it came with a washer. Usually, they have a 3-night minimum stay and I was lucky to get it for one night due to a mistake from booking.com. But if you are looking for an actual apartment in Chania for a few nights this is a perfect choice. On-street parking, walking distance to all the major sights in Chania, and a beautifully furnished apartment that is even wheelchair friendly.

62 Fun & Unusual Things to Do in Chania, Crete

things to do in Chania, Crete

  • 3 Pinterest

The sun and the sea have touched this city in equal measure; and from its remarkable architecture to its beautiful beaches and trails, there’s an endless array of amazing things to do in Chania !

As one of the larger towns in the region, this lively burg – located on the northern coast of the Greek island of Crete – is filled with fascinating spots for the history geek, the adrenaline junkie, the foodie, and everyone in between.

When you’re not absorbing the fascinating mix of cultures here – everything from Ottomans and Venetians to the mythological figures of Ancient Greece -, you can keep yourself busy snorkeling, mountaineering, or surfing…. not to mention eating and drinking your way through town!

So what are you waiting for? Let’s dive in!

1 – Wander around the Old Venetian Port of Chania

Old Venetian Port of Chania

Right along the main shore, this historic harbor dates all the way back to the Venetian era of the 13th century, when the Republic took over Crete. And it was certainly a labor of love; the construction process took nearly 300 years!

At that time, the harbor developed into a full-fledged naval stronghold, where goods were stored and boats were built and launched.

While there aren’t too many of the original structures still around today, the port itself remains as busy and vibrant as it was 800 years ago, with lots of great spots to stroll around and get a feel for the city.

Grab a nice meal, people-watch, or take a leisurely walk alongside the sea, where you can still spot modern-day boats bobbing in the sea.

2 – Explore the beauty of Old Town

Old Town, Chania

The name somewhat gives it away, but the Old Town region is lively and bursting with charm, from the weathered streets to the horse-drawn carriages that clop along them.

And the possibilities for fun are endless here! Sample your way through the lively Agora Market, browse for handicrafts, or amble around the Turkish District to explore the ongoing influence of the diaspora in the city.

And if you’re interested in religious buildings, this is the perfect place to explore; you can stroll past the Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (see #9) one moment, then admire the Orthodox halls of the Church of Agios Nikolaos (see #7) the next.

This is one neighborhood where the past is always present!

3 – Pay a visit to Firka Venetian Fortress

Firka Venetian Fortress, Chania

Another relic from the days of the Republic, this imposing structure was designed to protect the port from a constant barrage of threats – from other empires to swarms of raiding parties!

From humble beginnings as a series of barracks and storage areas, the complex blossomed into an impressively fortified space, with plenty of vantage points and strategic spots to perch defensive cannons.

Subsequent Ottoman rulers also utilized the space (the name “Firka” is actually a Turkish word for “barrack”), both as a military post and a jail; and in more recent decades, the apace has morphed again, this time into a vibrant relic of the multicultural past.

Perfectly located in the Old Town neighborhood, this is a wonderful site to visit if you want to see history come to life.

4 – Ponder the impact of the Lighthouse of Chania

Lighthouse of Chania

Moving from the military background to the nautical, you can enjoy the stunning design of this towering lighthouse, which was built sometime in the 1500s.

But this isn’t your ordinary watchtower; in the olden days, it could actually be connected via chain to the Firka Fortress, creating an emergency barrier to close off the harbor in case of attacks.

In the 1800s, the structure got a major renovation, including a minaret and unique designs added by visiting Egyptian troops; it later got another facelift in 2005, though you can still see plenty of older details, including the original base from the Venetian days.

Now, the building looks as strong and beautiful as it did in its heyday; as you admire its many angles and attributes, you can easily picture the ships coming in and out, guided – or shunned – by its watchful eye.

5 – Shop around at the Old Chania Market

Old Chania Market

Built in the early 1900s, this lovely shopping area was based on the popular covered market of Marseille, France … but its character and offerings are 100% Greek!

Foodies will find themselves in heaven here, with everything from cheeses, fish, and meats to fresh vegetables, olive oils, and some delectable spices to spruce up your next meal.

And if you’re visiting in the summer, you may even be able to score some handicrafts to take home!

Take some time to browse between the many stalls, and enjoy the distinctive arch overhead as you do so; it’s a wonderful part of the bustling market scene that so defines local life!

6 – Indulge in some botanical relaxation at the Chania Municipal Garden

Chania Municipal Garden

When you want a little dose of nature without leaving the heart of the city, this small, sweet park has got you covered!

From the time it was first opened in 1870, the garden was designed to be a public space, where residents could relax and enjoy the natural surroundings.

And today, you can still enjoy that same sense of tranquility, whether you’re watching the ducks at the pond or strolling in the shade of the many beautiful trees – including a ficus that’s been there since opening day!

7 – Admire the Church of Agios Nikolaos

Church of Agios Nikolaos, Chania

This 14th-century beauty is a perfect showcase for the area’s religious diversity – while it was started as a church, it also served some time as a home for Islamic culture!

During the Turkish occupation, the building shifted from a Dominican monastery to the city’s biggest mosque.

You can still see evidence of this cultural crossover during your visit; the structure is actually the only one in Greece with a minaret and a bell tower side by side!

And after the Turks left, the space reverted to an Orthodox church; and as you explore its fascinating architectural mishmash, you’ll be able to see firsthand how different religious and political agendas shaped the city over the centuries.

Trimartiri, Chania’s Cathedral Church

How’s this for an interesting transition… church to soap factory!

During the regime change of the 1600s, this cathedral was turned into a manufacturing plant for cleaning products.

It wasn’t until the 1800s that it was turned back into a religious institution, and it has served as a cultural anchor of the Old Town area ever since, whether as a protective space for citizens in the midst of war or as an active religious institution in the community.

If you happen to be visiting in the fall, you may catch the formal presentation of the Virgin Mary statue, which takes place on November 21st.

But the square has seen many other historical events as well; it was here that scores of Greeks were killed during the 1821 revolution, and where, over 100 years later, the various bombings of World War II leveled several buildings.
