The 18 Cheapest Places to Travel in 2022

Plan an exciting vacation without spending an arm and a leg.

Looking to catch a cheap flight this year? Kayak , one of the world's leading travel search engines, shared with Travel + Leisure a list of the cheapest places to travel this year.

To determine the most wallet-friendly destinations, Kayak analyzed the searches for flights from Nov. 20, 2020, through Nov. 19, 2021, for travel between Jan. 1, 2022, and June 30, 2022. Kayak then considered the top 100 most-clicked destinations with the lowest average flight price, excluding outliers based on criteria such as travel restrictions and security concerns.

Fly against the grain and get rewarded with major savings.

Unsurprisingly, Mexico makes the list of the cheapest places to travel in 2022. The country has long ranked as an affordable and easy-to-reach destination for many Americans; reasonably priced direct flights are abundant.

Within Mexico, San José del Cabo (in Baja California Sur), Puerto Vallarta, and Cancún come out on top as the cheapest places to fly, with January being the most affordable month to visit for each. Fortunately, January is nothing short of glorious in each of these beachy destinations — warm, balmy, and filled with rich colors, textures, and flavors to beat the winter blues.

Searching for a city break instead of a beach retreat? Mexico City, with its rich Aztec heritage and generous smattering of museums, is another affordable option in Mexico. May is the cheapest month to book a flight there.

Chicago, Illinois

Who wants to visit Chicago in winter? You will, once you see the rock-bottom prices you can score in January and all there is to do in this Midwest winter wonderland. Spend an afternoon on the Maggie Daley Park Ice Skating Ribbon, then warm up with a slice of deep-dish pizza.

Colombia is a beloved travel destination for its rich history, vibrant culture, and mouthwatering food. It's also well priced against what many Americans are used to paying for, say, a fresh arepa and cup of Colombian coffee.

February is the least expensive month to fly to the country's capital, Bogotá. The weather here is chilly, but not too cold to stroll the painstakingly maintained Bogotá Botanical Garden, which dates back to 1955 and is filled with almost 20,000 plants (and costs just over $1 USD to enter).

In January, head to Cartagena, a port city on the country's Caribbean coast. You don't have to spend much to enjoy your time here — simply walking the picturesque streets is enough for most visitors.

Nashville, Tennessee

There's a reason bachelorette parties and reunions of every sort flock in droves to the Music City — it's not hard to have a boot-scootin' time on a budget. Mural-hopping is free, hot chicken will only set you back a few bucks, and there's lots of live music to be heard (free of cover charge) along Honky Tonk Highway . January is the cheapest month to book.

New York City, New York

New York City isn't known for being a cheap destination, but go in January and you'll get the best prices they've got. The city never sleeps, but it does slow down during the cold winter months — the perfect time for you to swoop in and take advantage of the decreased demand for flights and hotel rooms. Plus, there are plenty of free things to do in New York City , too.

Mexico isn't our only neighboring country with deals aplenty — Canada also makes for an easy getaway, with well-priced flights widely available from most of the U.S.

In Montréal, Quebec, the must-try food is the steamé — the city's take on a hot dog — served steamed in a side-loading bun (which is also steamed). It's the perfect food to gobble up during freezing February, when the flights are cheapest. Best of all, each delicious (and filling) hot dog will only set you back a couple of dollars.

February is also the cheapest month to fly to Toronto, Ontario. The weather may make you leery, but don't let it: During February, the annual installation of art and lights, known as the Toronto Light Festival (totally free), takes place in the walkable and historic Distillery District. It's also a good time for The Bentway Skate Trail under the Gardiner Expressway overpass, which will set you back only $5.

And while Vancouver, British Columbia, is gorgeous in the summertime, January is the cheapest month to fly there. Take the ferry for an affordable "tour" of the city from the water.

Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta has all the big-city perks at prices far more wallet-friendly than most of its counterparts. Splurge on a SkyView Ferris wheel ride for views of Centennial Olympic Park and beyond, and go in January for the lowest possible prices. There are lots of things to do in Atlanta during this time of year, from visiting the marine animals at the Georgia Aquarium to learning about local history at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights.

Baltimore, Maryland

Head to Charm City this year to keep costs low and still have a memorable travel experience. Chilly January may be the cheapest month to visit, but luckily, you can still check out places like the Rawlings Conservatory and Botanic Gardens ($5 donation encouraged) in the urban oasis of Druid Hill Park.

San José, Costa Rica

The capital and largest city of Costa Rica, San José is a must-visit for any intrepid traveler. Expect Victorian mansions, nightlife in El Pueblo, lots of culture, and surrounding historic coffee plantations.

Check out the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum for a glimpse into what it might look like to have an unlimited jewelry budget. Admission is $15 for non-residents, but offers access to more than 1,500 gold objects and artifacts. Head to San José in May for the cheapest airfare to this lively (and affordable) city.

Dallas, Texas

This year, visit Dallas outside of Cowboys football season — like in January, when prices are at their lowest. During this time, you can expect more reasonable rates, but still get in on the sports action by catching a home game for the Mavericks (basketball) or the Stars (hockey).

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be, but if you prefer to devote the majority of your dollars to slots and shows rather than airfare and accommodations, go in January. Just don't expect hot temps, as even the desert gets cold in the winter. Here are some more tips to keep in mind and mistakes to avoid on your next trip to Sin City.

Panama City, Panama

Panama City, the capital of Panama, is an impressively modern Central American destination framed by the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Panama Canal on another — best viewable from the Miraflores Locks. Visit in January for great flight deals, and don't miss the cobblestone streets of historic Casco Viejo.

Tampa, Florida

Florida as a destination is hotter than ever, but Tampa isn't as inundated with crowds as the state's other major cities — plus, its location on the western coast promises gorgeous sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico. Go in January for a good deal, warm (but not sweltering) temps, and plenty of sunshine.

Hamilton, Bermuda

If January's chill has you dreaming of pink-sand beaches, you're in luck, as it's a great month to visit Bermuda. Fly into Hamilton and stroll Front Street for a peek at the pastel buildings that are iconic to this glitzy British island territory, but stick to window-shopping if you want to keep your trip cheap. Biking and beach-hopping are the name of the game here.

Boston, Massachusetts

January may be the cheapest month to fly to Boston, but it's not the best season for strolling its idyllic Common or touring the Freedom Trail. Luckily, many stops along the historic route are indoors — and cheap (like the Paul Revere House, which is just $6 per adult).

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is another popular destination for American travelers. January is the least expensive month to visit the two most affordable cities to fly into: Santo Domingo and Punta Cana.

Though Santo Domingo is the country's capital, it doesn't have to be an expensive visit. Take in the architecture that dates back to the late 1400s and stroll the Colonial Zone for a memorable (and free) experience.

Punta Cana, on the other hand, is known as a tourist hot spot with plenty of resorts (and ways to spend lots of money). However, some of life's greatest treasures — like sandy beaches and waterfall hikes — are as free in Punta Cana as they are anywhere else.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

You don't need a passport to fly to St. Thomas, but you'll have a hard time believing this jaw-dropping, colorful island is technically U.S. soil. Make sure to visit Magens Bay, climb the 99 Steps in Charlotte Amalie, and marvel at the sheer blueness of the water surrounding this popular cruise ship port. Go in January for the best flight prices; you'll be glad for the savings when you see what accommodations cost on this luxurious island.

Denver, Colorado

Denver has a ton to do, even in January, which is the cheapest month to visit. Hitting the slopes is hard to do at a discount (unless you go in the summer to hike instead of ski), but at least you'll save money on airfare if you visit Denver during this snowy month.

Shame that I was quoted double the price that Cheeky Trip quoted on their website

I got really excited about booking a cheeky all inc break away for £207pp for next month, but as soon as I did the live chat and quoted the reference to the travel agent (not cheeky trip) the price doubled. When I queried it, they said the price is not live. I checked on cheeky trip and it said the price was correct as of an hour before… so it doubled in an hour? I understand what the travel agents do is out of cheeky trips hands, but it’s put me off trying to book through them now, as it just seems a waste of time looking, researching the hotel, checking dates are ok etc, for the travel agent to double the price anyway. Is that how it’s supposed to work?

Tonight I chatted with Michael.. he was cheeky & rude & the holiday I was checking ended up over £150 more expensive than I can purchase the same holiday elsewhere.

Benidorm girls week

my friends and I have just returned from a cheeky trip to Benidorm 5 nights half board at Hotel Camposol (old town) The reviews were bad but we decided to ignore and go with an open mind - especially as it was ridiculously cheap! All I can say is ignore the bad reviews The hotel was great, and it was clean yes it was basic but it was very clean and rooms cleaned every day and new towels and bedding The travel was fab, flights great time and transfers were easy to find and on time The food was good at the hotel - out of season so they didn’t need to put loads on - we had a cooked breakfast every morning and an evening meal - and had choices and the food was good We have no complaints at all. We stayed in the old town and it was a 10 min walk to the new town so we had the best of everything In fact I can honestly say it’s one of the best holidays Iv had in years and it was cheap as chips I’m happy to tell the world- book a cheeky trip and get yourself some sun 😊

Excellent experience

Excellent experience! Very informed booking made by Remo. Great price for a 5* resort AI, in Cyprus; King Elverton Hotel. Food excellent, helpful staff. Amazing room with excellent seaview. Weather is 18-20c, currently lying by the pool. Gets cool about 3ish and mornings are cool but we have a tan! My daughter who is 4, is loving it. It’s not too busy, so plenty of space and no queues for anything. I would highly recommend the hotel and I would use Cheekytrip again !

Really poor customer service - wouldn't recommend

I called to discuss some last minute flights I wanted to book. I had advised the rep that I was quite flexible and happy to hear some quotes. He was very rude, told me off for speaking over him and told me to let him finish when I was telling him the flight time wasn't suitable. He then spoke over me when I was talking. He told me I was being indecisive - he was confusing me by telling me about one flight but then finding another and telling me about that and then blamed me. I told him I would call back later and he said "please do not call back". I am SO glad I didn't book with him.

I wrote a review about Cheeky trip. com on Sunday the 26th March 2023 and have been asked to explain in more detail. I searched this companies site for a good holiday deal and thought I had found one. I did not book it due to advice give by a family member. They advised me to check out their reviews which I am glad i did. There were some positive reviews but the most recent ones and majority of the ones I read were very negative as those who wrote them warned of hidden costs, false advertising ,poor customer service and scamming. I had communicated on line with some of the staff employed by this company and in all honesty found them helpful and nice. However as those who wrote reviews about them warned that this was the staff approach unto you pay. That once you do their attitude will change. Due to this I booked a holiday with another company.

I have stayed at the Grand Hotel Barli a number of times. Yes it’s situated in a quite area, great for young Family’s. It is roughly 30 minutes walk to the New town for Great night life also some amazing shopping which doesn’t disappoint. In my opinion it’s the best of both worlds, lovely beach only 5 minutes walk, peace nd quiet during day.

Nothing bad to say. They sorted out the travel . Transfer and everything. Kept in constant contact and always replied promptly. Obviously the prices go up when you add luggage etc but you still get a good deal with them . Booked holiday today

Booked holiday today. Whilst we were put on hold and waiting for confirmation of payment we were then told that the airline cost had been increased to £101.00 each when the whole holiday should have only been £290.00 as advertised each at the time of ringing. I initially paid £215.00 for the hotel but was told that the airfares had increased whilst we were on the phone. I asked for my money back as I wasn’t prepared to pay the increase but was told I couldn’t have it back as the hotel had already been booked and it wasn’t their fault that the airline had increased their fare. I was furious as I feel they should have honoured the price on the ad. These people are an absolute con and should be reported. Never, ever use them. I am seeking legal advice and intend to do everything I can to expose them for what they are…con, con, con. Stay clear of these people.

This is the worst fraudulent company DO…

This is the worst fraudulent company DO NOT BOOK with them. So when we originally booked it was supposed to be 2 rooms as we have 3 children and 2 adults but Karan the advisor advised me the trims may be a distance apart so I didn’t want this and I said can he book a bigger room instead of 2… which I though would be a better room too so he confirmed okay I book you a better room double not standard as previously advised. I paid £3900 for this holiday which is expensive also beware of their hidden costs and when you say your not paying them they threaten you with with are keeping what you have already paid and cancelling your holiday.. yes your read right. So we came on our holiday on the 19th evening to find a standard room with 2 single beds how can all of us fit in this room and it was not a upgraded room anyway several occasions of calling them Making phone bills and being told the manager is not conveniently available we are still stuck in one room. The supervisor I spoke to was called Anthony who assured me I would get a call but I haven’t. I used to fly for virgin Atlantic I’ve been all around the world and been in the industry for many years please avoid this company at all costs.

We had a lovely Whole family holiday to Gran Holtel Bali, great location just a short walk to the beach. Hotel facilities outstanding all inclusive including hotel with entertainment. Amazing hotel at the Bahia Tenerife

Amazing hotel at the Bahia Tenerife, have visited many times and it’s always clean, plenty of entertainment day and night. The staff are absolutely amazing and couldn’t do enough for you. The local area is small but has plenty of really lovely bars and restaurants. Easy to navigate your way around. The hotel is only 10 odd minutes from the airport.

Awsome time at the pirate village !

We stayed for 10 days on all inclusive at the Pirate Village in Santa Ponsa We had a fantastic time , very well situated next to big supermarket and lovely 10 minutes walk to the beach. Apartment clean and spacious , pool view is a must. Food varied always warm and tasty But most of well what makes this place is the dedicated staff and entertainment, my girls (6 and 8) had the absolute best time. The pools and slides were a hit too Would definitely recommend :)

Stayed at the royal thalasso monastir. It was amazing. The staff are friendly great entertainment and food. Would say it’s not for children really as it’s more of an adult hotel not really much for kids to do. It’s amazing for adults. Cheekytrip are not to be trusted

Cheekytrip are different to other reputable agencies on Google because the reservation requires a phone call which is then subject to price hikes, and calls can go on for hours, days and nights! Our final experience with HolidayGlobe cost us alot of money on top of an expensive deal, as we were booked on Half Board instead of the promised All Inclusive. This may have been a genuine mistake, but their refusal to discuss both during and after the holiday makes me suspect bad intent.

I visited Albufeira Grand Mutha Oura…

I visited Albufeira Grand Mutha Oura view beach club hotel in 2022 and had the most fantastic experience. We had a villa not far from the pool, within walking distance from the breakfast restaurant. Fantastic views. The villa was really spacious and clean with a kitchen and large bathroom and open bedroom. Balcony with table, chairs and sun loungers. The food was excellent as was the service. It has lots of restaurant choices, an indoor pool, gym and fantastic outdoor pool. A lovely large sandy private beach is easily accessible with a key given via reception. There's lots of lovely shops and restaurants within a short walk too. Albufeira new town bars & restaurants are within 5mins from the hotel and the old town is easily accessible with a rickshaw, taxi or a walk for those that like walking as its a distance from the hotel. You won't be disappointed and I would definitely recommend a stay here.

Customer service Shouted at me and hung up the phone

Contacted the company phone line listed on the website for “sunny breaks” first person I spoke with was lovely however when I was transferred and quoted the reference number they stated that I would not get a trip for that cheap and quoted me triple the price! Booked a last minute trip

Booked a last minute trip, at first been told they can't give me the offer price because is not available any more but it will update in the morning. Phoned early in the morning and my chosen hotel had not availability any more so been offered even better 4star hotel. Been told nothing just lies like it's in city centre, great nightlife, next to a shopping centre etc ended it up in the middle of nowhere, in disgusting room beds were not even made on our arrival, mold in the room and bathroom, toilet was worst then public toilet in UK, dinner room was full of smoke, barely any food and if so covered in flies... they absolutely robbed us and will never use them again... absolutely useless when I ask for help, wish I would read reviews first... horrible horrible experience stay away if you can

Would not use this company ever again

Would not use this company ever again . They gave a price higher than advertised .Then I agreed to a price. They then asked for card details and passport details then tried to charge another£150 pounds. Told them I could not afford this then he said he would cancel holiday but would be charging us for cancellation . Then put the phone down on us . Do not use this company . I have the information the company wants but they have not sent private message mmm.

Totally scammed today,Expected to pay…

Totally scammed today,Expected to pay £428 as advertised,For all inclusive,after I gave bank details the price jumped £200,when I asked to cancel was tricked into paying nearly £600 for a 4night.Thanks Remo.Beware & avoid this company. Scammers.

My experience with gran Bali hotel…love Bali been 6 times great hotel for families

My experience with gran Bali hotel benidorm lovley hotel very clean and helpful staff. Only thing is if not good on feet there is a hill walk back up from beach quiet area brilliant for family just the town is distance away need get bus or taxi ..but there regular and only 2 min from hotel .

We had a great experience to zandam

We had a great experience to zandam. The hotel was amazing and the food equally as good. There is a big Primark near by and it has some fab items that we don't have here in the UK .. there is a short train journey into the centre of Amsterdam where we visited the local attractions.
