Live reviews
Electric Youth has a distinctly 80s or early 90s vibe to their sound, driven by the synth beats, keyboard melodies and sweet voice of Bronwyn Griffin. All of these combine to make their live shows feel as though you may be in a John Hughes film. Bronwyn’s voice is amazing and she’s fun to watch dance across the stage. The other half of the synth-pop two-some, Austin Garrick, is responsible for creating pretty much all of the music and he holds a quiet confidence behind his mix of drum and crash pads up on the stage. To round out the sound, they also tour with a couple other band members who play guitar and keyboard/synthesizer and add a depth to the music that wouldn’t be possible with just Bronwyn and Austin. Although none of their songs are wildly up-beat, with them tending towards a more mellow, head-bobbing sound, there are a few songs that really got the crowd on their feet and dancing, such as “Replay”. With a new album coming out soon and the first single, “Innocence” bringing a slightly more anthemic sound than their previous albums, it will be interesting to see if they bring a bigger show with them on tour.

About the Youth Tour
The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour has brought high school students to Washington, D.C. for a week in June every year since the late 1950s. Students apply and are selected for this program by their local electric cooperative. We believe that students should see their nation’s capital up close, learn about the political process and interact with their elected officials.
Students gain a personal understanding of American history and their role as a citizen by meeting their Representative and Senators. While student groups are organized at the state level, they all come together for Youth Day, where they get to meet each other and hear featured speakers who provide insight to the important roles electric cooperatives play in their communities.
Nearly 50,000 students from rural areas and small towns across America have participated in this program. Some of our Youth Tour alumni have gone on to design airplanes, to lead companies and to serve in the highest ranks of our government, including the U.S. Senate. Don’t be surprised if you run into a former Youth Tour participant who is a congressional aide on Capitol Hill. While several of our alumni work in Washington, you will find even more alumni in your own community.
If you want to be part of this fun (free!) week in Washington, please contact your local electric cooperative for additional information.
Origins and History
Senator Lyndon Baines Johnson inspired the Youth Tour when he addressed the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Annual Meeting in Chicago in 1957. The Senator and future president declared, “If one thing comes out of this meeting, it will be sending youngsters to the national capital where they can actually see what the flag stands for and represents.”
Consequently, some Texas electric cooperatives sent groups of young people to Washington to work during the summer in Senator Johnson’s office. In 1958, a rural electric cooperative in Iowa sponsored the first group of 34 young people on a week-long study tour of our nation’s capital. Later that same year, another busload came to Washington from Illinois. The idea grew and other states sent busloads of young people throughout the summer. By 1959, the “Youth Tour” had grown to 130 students.
In 1964, NRECA began to coordinate joint activities among the state delegations and suggested that co-op representatives from each state arrange to be in Washington, D.C., during Youth Tour week. The first year of the coordinated Tour included approximately 400 young people from 12 states. Word of the program has continued to spread and today, more than 1,500 students and over 250 chaperones participate in the Youth Tour every year.
Youth Tour directors from each state association arrange their delegation’s visits to their U.S. representatives’ and senators’ offices, federal agencies and other educational and sightseeing activities. In addition to the planned statewide activities, the Youth Tour experience encompasses multi-state activities coordinated by NRECA.

900 WORDS CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING
Electric co-op creative writing and scholarship competition.
Before you lies a unique opportunity. Winners of the Electric Cooperative Creative Writing Contest qualify for thousands of dollars in scholarships and have a chance to network with other young leaders from across the nation.
More than 6,000 high school juniors from across Tennessee have participated in the Electric Cooperative Creative Writing Contest.
This website will tell you more about the opportunities, let you hear from previous delegates and outline the requirements and resources to help you write the best short story. It will also tell you a little bit more about electric cooperatives and the reasons they have provided this opportunity to students for more than 50 years.
What you can win
Tennessee’s electric co-ops will follow the advice of medical experts and public health officials as we plan for the 2023 Tour. If we are unable to ensure the safety of our winners, the trip will not be possible, and other prizes may be awarded in place of the trip.
Your prize for showing the benefits of cooperative power: an unforgettable trip to Washington, D.C., in June 2024 with nearly 2,000 other students your age from across the country.
Each day of the Washington Youth Tour brings more impressive sights, opportunities for photos and lots of memories. Among activities filling the agenda are tours of Washington, D.C., and all its landmarks, memorials and museums. Highlights include the Smithsonian Institution, White House, U.S. Capitol, Mount Vernon and Monticello.
Food, travel and lodging expenses are paid by Tennessee’s electric cooperatives. But the benefits of the Youth Tour go far beyond an expense-paid trip. Youth Tour winners can compete to represent Tennessee on the Youth Leadership Council. One student from each state is selected to return to Washington, D.C., for a leadership workshop, which focuses on the electric cooperative industry.
And don’t forget about the chance to help pay for your college education with scholarships of $3,000, $2,000 or $1,000 awarded by the Tennessee Electric Cooperative Association if your story is judged one of the top three in the state.
You can also choose to participate in our Cooperative Youth Ambassador program. Delegates who stay active and engaged with their co-ops in the 12 months following Youth Tour qualify for a drawing for a $10,000 scholarship to the school of the winner’s choice.
Other scholarships, including the Glenn English National Cooperative Leadership Foundation Scholarship and the Engineers of the Future Scholarship, are available through the Glenn English National Cooperative Leadership Foundation.
In addition to scholarships provided by the electric co-ops, Union University in Jackson and Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City have recognized the leadership potential of Youth Tour delegates. The universities have agreed to provide dozens of scholarships worth up to $10,000 a year for four years.
Washington, D.C. trip
Winners will explore our nation’s capital during a six-day, all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

Community Service
Learn about how electric cooperatives are improving lives in the communities we serve.
Electric cooperatives were born when neighbors banded together to solve a problem.
Electric cooperatives
Tennessee’s electric cooperatives provide power to more than 1.1 million homes, farms and businesses across rural and suburban Tennessee. Unlike other businesses, electric cooperatives are owned by the consumers they serve and operate as not-for-profit businesses. This may not sound important, but it means that consumers are the priority. Rates are kept low because there are no stockholders to pay, and the co-op is responsive to members because they vote on co-op leadership.
In the 1930s, there was no power in rural Tennessee. Homeowners and farmers came together to create co-ops that would bring power to their homes.
Today, co-ops are modern businesses that use technology to efficiently operate a large, advanced grid. Despite these changes, the primary goal of co-ops have not changed: provide safe, reliable and affordable energy to our neighbors, the very people who own the co-op.
Because of their local ties, co-ops are committed to improving lives in their communities. Going beyond simply keeping the lights on, co-ops recruit businesses and investment, help members operate their homes and businesses more efficiently and prepare students to be tomorrow’s leaders.

San Diego band Electric Mud will open Rolling Stones’ May 7 Arizona concert
Three of the award-winning band’s four members are U.S. Navy veterans and nephews of Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards and his wife, Patti Hansen. ‘It will be the most awesome show we’ve ever done,’ says Electric Mud co-founder Marc Hansen.

It’s a dream never fully dreamed come true for Electric Mud. The award-winning San Diego rock band, led by former U.S. Navy SEAL Marc Hansen, will perform as the opening act for the Rolling Stones’ May 7 Arizona concert at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, a suburb of Phoenix.

June 12, 2020
The announcement was made Thursday morning in a press release issued by the legendary English band’s New York representatives.
The concert at the 63,400-capacity Arizona stadium is one of 16 dates on the Stones’ 2024 North American Hackney Diamonds stadium tour. It opened Wednesday in Houston, concludes July 25 in Santa Clara, just outside San Francisco, and includes July 10 and 13 performances at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

Nov. 21, 2023
“The biggest show we’ve ever done up until now was at San Diego’s House of Blues club,” Hansen told the Union-Tribune late last week. “This Arizona concert with the Stones came out of the blue.”
Out of the blue, perhaps. But not without some lobbying — and a fortuitous family connection — on the part of Electric Mud.
Three of the band’s four members — brothers Marc and Matty Hansen, and their cousin, bassist Matt Sorena — are the nephews of Patti Hansen and her husband, Rolling Stones guitarist and vocalist Keith Richards.
Marc Hansen credits Keith Richards for giving him his first guitar and first guitar lesson as a teenager, and for encouraging Electric Mud early on. The band was formed in Staten Island, N.Y. in 2008, then relocated to San Diego, after guitarist/singer Marc and his drummer brother Matty enlisted in the U.S. Navy and relocated to San Diego.
“I had sent our Aunt Patti an Electric Mud promotional package to give to the promoters of the Stones’ tour two years ago,” Hansen, 37, recalled.
“We hadn’t heard anything since then, so we all thought it was a shot in the dark. Then, just a few weeks ago, the promoters asked my aunt: ‘Hey, where are your nephews? We want them to open for the Stones.’ Then, they contacted us. They said Mick (Jagger) had a big hand in picking us — as he does with all the bands that open for the Stones — and told the promoters to give us a shot.”
The Hansen brothers and Sorena each released solo albums last year. But Electric Mud, whose fourth member is guitarist Colton Cori, has been largely inactive as a band since the COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020.
Opening a stadium gig for the Stones is a singular reason to kick back into gear — and a potentially nerve-wracking one — since the opening acts at other dates on the Hackney Diamonds tour includes such established artists as Gary Clark, Jr., Widespread Panic, Tyler Childers and Lainey Wilson.
“I’d say we’re a lot more excited than nervous,” said Hansen, whose day job is as a civilian trainer for U.S. Navy SEALs. “We’ve never done anything this big, so there are a lot of extra details that go with it. I mean, we don’t even have a soundman!”
To get ready for their very big show in Arizona, Electric Mud will do some recordings sessions here this weekend. The band will then rehearse all of next week at a studio near the Pechanga Arena San Diego, a venue the Stones have performed in a number of times over the past half-century. Electric Mud’s goal is to hone a dozen or so of the band’s songs, then select the best six for their 30-minute opening set at State Farm Stadium.
If all goes according to plan, Electric Mud will do a free warm-up concert here in San Diego on May 5. (Updates will be posted on the band’s website at electricmudofficial.com/band .) Then, comes the May 6 drive with all their equipment to Arizona, and the big night on May 7.
“It will be the most awesome show we’ve ever done,” Hansen said. “And even if we never do anything else, we’ll have opened for the Stones, our favorite band and the greatest rock and roll band in the world. We will get on that stage and do the very best we can do. What really matters is that we crush that show.”

The Strength Of The Aggie Ring
D ecades of stories tell of Texas Aggies greeting each other on sight, all over the world, no matter if they are wearing business attire or a uniform or tourist gear.
This is possible because of the extraordinary strength of the Aggie Ring. The Aggie Ring Program, with roots going back to 1889 and operated by The Association of Former Students since 1969, is the largest college ring program in the country, unique in its scope, history and enthusiastic adoption.
Each year, over 15,000 Texas A&M students complete the requirements and order their Aggie Rings – the purchase rate is 94% among undergraduates who qualify. Traditionally, they wear their Aggie Rings throughout their lives, carrying the most visible symbol of the Aggie Network out across the globe. Though college rings began at West Point and remain strong with military academies, Texas A&M’s Aggie Ring survived the transition from military-only to a large public university population.
Today, Texas A&M’s program is larger than any other college ring account with America’s three biggest manufacturers, Balfour, Jostens and Herff-Jones, company representatives said. That most likely makes Texas A&M’s the largest college ring program in the world, since school rings originated in the U.S. and are “a much bigger phenomenon here than in other countries,” said Balfour representative Lee Briggs ’94.
Balfour has manufactured all Aggie Rings since 1947, and the Aggie Ring Program is more than triple the size of Balfour’s next-largest college ring accounts. Balfour has around 55% of the college ring market, including 75% of the colleges that have an established college ring program, Briggs said. Their second largest college account is Clemson University, with around 4,500 rings per year; third is the University of Texas at around 2,500 rings per year, Briggs said.
How does the Aggie Ring thrive, even as ring programs at other schools work to catch up?
High Standards
Strict qualifications mean each Aggie Ring represents the wearer’s hard work and academic achievement.
Aggie Ring qualifications are among the tightest in the country – and they’ve been in place since the 1930s, with periodic updates .
Back in 1933, officers of the Class of ’31 petitioned the A&M faculty to restrict purchase of the Aggie Ring to students who have attained at least the second semester of their junior year.
Today, Aggie Ring requirements for undergraduates include 90 completed credit hours, with 45 at Texas A&M; a cumulative GPR of 2.0 or higher; and good academic standing. Qualifications for grad students and former students are similar.
These standards are inflexible; exceptions are not made, and each individual may only order a single Aggie Ring. The Association conducts audits to ensure each recipient is qualified.
“There has always been a very real mystique surrounding the Aggie Ring. And an unbelievable amount of pride in earning one,” said Class Agent Robert Oliver ’74 (Class Agents are Association volunteers who work to connect Classmates to each other and Texas A&M).
That pride is on full display both when students order their Aggie Rings – many take photos commemorating the moment – and at Aggie Ring Days, when students invite 40,000 family members and friends to see them pick up their bands of gold.
Although strict ring requirements once were uncommon at other schools, Briggs said that in the past 20 years, the college ring market is shifting toward Texas A&M’s model with “all of the elements that A&M has had for years”: tight criteria, a single ring design and specific delivery days with a celebratory event. Texas A&M’s first event celebrating the Aggie Ring began in 1934: Ring Dance has provided generations of Aggie photos under a giant replica Aggie Ring. Today, Ring Dance is put on by the student Class Councils, and the 2024 Ring Dance will be hosted on April 26 by The Association, which has long provided support for both Class Councils and Ring Dance.
Briggs believes the visibility of the Aggie Ring and pride in earning one have been elevated by two recent Association additions to the tradition: Aggie Ring Day, which began in 2000, and the three-ton Haynes Ring monument , dedicated in 2009.
“I think when you attend a Ring Day and you see the students bring their parents and grandparents, it’s something that you feel like as an Aggie you need to participate in,” Briggs said. Upon its unveiling , the Haynes Ring Plaza instantly became a campus landmark and the focal point for thousands of celebratory Aggie photographs.
“I don’t think anybody really knew how big a symbol that would be,” Briggs said. “Those maintained and increased the importance of Aggies wanting to get their Aggie Rings.”
Association President and CEO Porter Garner ’79, who had the idea to create Aggie Ring Day and has overseen its development as well as the creation of the Haynes Ring, said it’s hard to estimate their effect accurately, but “intuitively, you would be hard-pressed not to believe that it has to impact the anticipation.”
Garner noted that Aggie Ring Day also helps others learn: “Starting in 2000, you had parents who never went here, grandparents who never went here, you had faculty members come over. And you look at it today: There are thousands of people that know more about the Aggie Ring than ever because we’ve included them in Aggie Ring Day.” Ultimately, Garner said, “I think it is our graduates, the people who wear the Aggie Ring, who have made the Ring strong.
“I think it means more today than it ever has. Because I think Aggies look for the Aggie Ring – they look to connect – and it means you can trust whoever that person is. Because you have a bond with them.”
Historic Design
The symbolism of the Aggie Ring began in the 1880s, has been standardized since 1933 and carries great meaning.
“Consistency of design,” said Class Agent Philip Leopold ’84, makes the Aggie Ring “easy to spot in a crowd of rings. Many schools have made the mistake of allowing custom-tailored rings.”
Balfour representative Briggs agreed: “When I started 30 years ago, most colleges or universities had several different ring designs you could choose from, and several different manufacturers. There was a multitude of different designs, and A&M stood alone because of having one single design.”
More schools now are moving toward a single approved ring style, Briggs said. But they are starting from nearly a century behind. Since 1933, the Aggie Ring has had a distinctive design, recognizable worldwide.
The earliest rings at Texas A&M varied; some featured an entwined “AMC,” including the oldest known example from 1889.
The design made for the Class of 1894 was the first known to feature an eagle on the top, state seal on one side and crossed saber and rifle on the other; there is an 1898 example in The Association’s display collections .
The Ring Committee appointed in 1933 – made up of students, former students and faculty, and led by the head of The Association of Former Students – added the words “Texas A&M College-1876” and standardized the design and production for an Aggie Ring that is visibly similar to those worn ever since.
That recognizability paid off. Leopold said, “Younger Ags saw how powerful the ring was in connecting with older Ags. I saw Aggie Rings as I traveled around the world, and it proved to be an immediate way to reach out and connect.”
