A Christmas special service on the Bodmin & Wenford Steam Railway, Cornwall.

Steam and sparkle: six of the best Christmas railway journeys in the UK

From Santa Specials for excited children to a luxury Yuletide Evening Express for the grownups, these colourful trips will get you into the festive spirit

T here’s an affinity between trains and Christmas , but what precisely is the connection? Ghostliness comes into it – the mystique of a train in the wintry night. I think of the misty, hypnotic adaptation of Dickens’s story The Signalman, in 1976, part of the BBC’s A Ghost Story for Christmas strand; or the ghost story in the Christmas number of the Railway magazine (that publication’s only excursion into whimsicality is always worth reading).

Advertising from 1905.

Prof Paul Salveson, founder of the Community Rail movement, has written some excellent railway ghost stories, but he thinks the more profound connection is that “trains bring us home to our loved ones, and they have a sense of warmth and comfort that cars don’t have”. He recalls, from the 1960s, “lots of “Christmas extras” taking hundreds of people home, to and from Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool, often through snow-swept Pennine landscapes. Salveson finds an echo of that Christmas warmth in some stations today: for example, Paddington, with its Friday night brass band.

The trains themselves are not so warm as when they were literal fire carriers, and when trains feature on Christmas cards – which they often do – they are always steam-hauled. But in recent years, our many steam-oriented heritage railways have embraced Christmas with Dickensian relish, partly because those other child-friendly earners, Thomas the Tank Engine days, have become increasingly expensive to license.

There’s no copyright on Father Christmas (at the time of writing) and most heritage lines offer a Santa Special, while others have gone for licensed events not yet as familiar as Thomas Days, and which do vary from line to line. Professional performers are usually involved in the shows, most of which start later this month.

Here are six of the best lines for families.

Bodmin & Wenford Railway, Santa by Steam

Bodmin & Wenford Railway, Santa by Steam

The B&W has been doing Christmas specials “our own way” for decades. The trains run through the Glynn valley, characterised by a spokesperson as “steeply wooded, lots of trees, glimpses of white, rushing water”. Santa’s grotto will be on the train, in the former bedroom of a saloon carriage, built by the Great Western Railway in 1881 to take Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) to various racecourses and other West Country indulgences. Speaking of which, I can personally recommend the Cornish pasties dished up by the B&W. Running every weekend in December in the lead up to Christmas , and Thursday 21 and Friday 22 Dec, from £ 15.95 , bodminrailway.co.uk

East Lancashire Railway, Santa Specials

East Lancashire Railway’s Santa Spacial train, featuring a brass band.

The East Lancs is unusual in being a heritage railway based in a large town, its main station being in Bury. It’s also known for its progressive community outreach and the scale of its Christmas festivities. The gritty, part-Victorian, part-1950s Bolton Street station will become a Winter Wonderland, with a “choir” of mechanical polar bears, a “talking Christmas tree”, “red sleigh photo opportunities”, and Father Christmas supplemented by Mrs Claus and an Ice Princess. Nine trains a day over 13 days will serve an expected 40,000 visitors. They will run along the leafy Irwell valley, with Father Christmas handing out toys. Oh, and a brass band will also be on board. Santa Specials start on 25 Nov , from £ 23 , eastlancsrailway.org.uk

Caledonian Railway (Brechin), Polar Express

A still from the film Polar Express

Polar Express events are licensed entertainments based on the 2004 children’s film, extrapolated from Chris Van Allsburg’s picture book about a nocturnal train that takes a boy to the heart of Christmas. Characters from the film are portrayed, including the dancing chefs, and participants old and young are encouraged to wear their pyjamas (at least as outer garments). Of the railways offering this, the one nearest the actual pole is the Caledonian Railway (Brechin), which runs from a town of 7,000 people (Brechin) to a village of about 20 (Bridge of Dun), through agricultural scenes that have hardly changed since the line opened in 1848. Starting 18 Nov, from £28.95 plus booking fee, caledonianrailway.com

after newsletter promotion

Epping Ongar Railway, Lights Express

Epping Ongar Lights Express

“Light trains” are another standard attraction, albeit with local variations. Trains are draped in lights that change colour, illuminating the engine’s steam; there are also interior light shows, coordinated to music. This entertainment is likely to seem particularly surreal on the EO because of its coloured steam will be observable amid the trees of Epping Forest, which adjoins the line. Starting 25 Nov, from £20, eorailway.co.uk

Nene Valley Railway, Yuletide Evening Express

This train, operating only on 9 and 16 December between Wansford and Peterborough, is for age 12 and upwards, so the emphasis is on drinks (and nibbles), and the pedigree of the “luxury European coaches” involved. These include an Italian restaurant car of 1926 with marquetry panels in rich mahogany framing and fine brass luggage racks. There is also a Belgian coach from the 1930s, which played the part of a bar car in the 2010 TV film Murder on the Orient Express. The coaches are magnificent, but trainspotterish literalism obliges me to mention that there never was a bar car on the real Orient Express. (The NVR is also running Santa Specials .) Yuletide Express 9 and 16 Dec, table for two £90 , nvr.org.uk

North York Moors Railway, Santa Specials

Santa Special Train, Moorlander, steam train on a way from Pickering to Grosmont

The NYMR’s Santa Specials start from either Pickering or Grosmont stations. The former has the matt green trimmings of the inter-war LNER; the latter is in ivory and oriental blue, the strangely exotic colour scheme of BR North Eastern Region. Apparently, a strong rivalry has sprung up between the “station teams”, as to which can best supplement these historical themes with Christmas decorations. The line’s Santa Specials will feature the usual cast of characters and gift-giving, but landscape is what makes the NYMR special: lowering winter skies and the variegated shades of the moorland heather ensure that any photograph taken from (or of) its trains is a ready-made Christmas card. Starting 25 Nov , £ 30 , nymr.co.uk

Dartmouth Steam Railway’s Train of Lights, Devon

Dartmouth Steam Railway’s Train of Lights is easily one of the very best Christmas train rides in the UK – and one of the few options which runs after Christmas Eve as well.

Starting from the station at Paignton, the platform and carriages are decorated with thousands of lights. Then after a fun 15-minute train ride along the lovely coastal Devon route to Churston, you start your journey to some enchanting woods decorated with a beautifully festive light show.

Finishing with a view of the twinkling lights of Dartmouth itself, reflected in the river, there’s chance to take photos from Kingswear before heading back to see if all again from a different direction.

Something very different from the other Santa steam trains on this list, but easily one of the most unmissable festive family experiences in the UK. Nothing like an array of sparkly lights to brighten up the darkest coldest months, right?

  • Sights and smells - Cannot beat the smell and sound of a steam locomotive, a very scenic ride firstly along the beach, then along the river Dart. A couple of hours in Dartmouth then all aboard for trip back.
  • A thoroughly enjoyable day out - I was very impressed with the organisation, it was always very clear where we were supposed to go and what time we were supposed to be somewhere - would happily do it again.
  • Fantastic trip - Booked this trip beforehand due to current circumstances. Good pricing, beautiful scenery on the journey, easy to get off & get the ferry straight over. Cruise down the river was also lovely.

What to expect on a christmas lights train ride, are they worth it, what's the best age, how long are they, do they include food, how much are they, is santa on board, where are the 2023 uk christmas lights train rides, 15 jolly festive winter walks.

Inspiration for easy cheap family entertainment and a great way to get some fresh air too!

Merging the classic Christmas steam train ride with a visit to a Christmas lights trail , this is a new kind of winter’s night adventure.

Whilst each of the Christmas lights train rides listed below is operated independently, most use a similar format.  A 60-90 minute return journey aboard a heritage train with synchronised music, story-telling, lights and lineside displays.  (Experiences on the smaller private circular train lines are more variable in offering.)

Most of the trains are pulled in at least one direction by a classic steam engine, with the huge plumes providing the canvas on which the train’s lights dance.

Some of the trains have a diesel locomotive for the return leg.  Others include a pitstop at the halfway point to uncouple the steam engine and transfer it to the other end of the train (with bonus outside viewing and photo time for the passengers).

So there’s plenty for the railway enthusiast, young and young-at-heart, to enjoy.  And more than a hint of Dickensian Christmastime for all!

These are not Santa train rides as standard (although some do have a visit from the man in red – details included below).  However there are plenty of festive elements, from the music to the narration and food provisions.  Not to mention the chilly night time light displays themselves which we all associate with the Christmas season.

Watercress Line Christmas Lights Train

If the lights are on the outside of the train, surely it’s better to watch it go past for free rather than pay to be on board?

If you’re thinking this, you are in good company – it was our first thought too.

There’s no doubt these trains create quite the display as they travel across the countryside and it would definitely be worth enjoying a separate trip out to watch them streak past.  We’ve included some suggested viewing locations (with What 3 Words reference) for each Christmas lights train ride below if you’d like to do exactly that.  Scroll down to the individual train ride details to find out more.

Onboard, the experience is much more of an immersive Christmas lights trail style event.  It’s like starring in your very own Coca-Cola advert!  Yes the holidays are coming … but this time, they’re arriving by train!

What Lights Can I See From Onboard?

You should be able to enjoy the train lights from a number of different perspectives.  Many of the train rides start with a town centre Christmas lights-style countdown.  And routes often include curved areas of track or pass close by a reservoir or river so that you can watch the train’s reflection in the dark waters.

As well as glimpses of the chains of fairy lights around and across the windows, the interiors of most of the trains are decorated with hundreds more fairy lights.

You’ll also have the opportunity to see the train up close and personal on the platform before, after and sometimes during your ride too.  If there’s a bridge at the station, be sure to go up for an overhead perspective. The perfect opportunity to snag that family Christmas photo or IG shot!

What Is There To See Outside?

Obviously this will differ depending on the train ride taken.  Routes pass through areas of decorated lineside and/or stations and some include “snowy” sections as you travel.  Lights are purposely dimmed inside to ensure that passengers can see.  And the steam from the engine adds an aire of mystery to the scene.

Some of the displays are lit directly.  Others by floodlights on the exterior of the train (often below the carriages) which illuminate the woodland and trackside as you pass through.  These displays are often linked to narrated stories on board or dance in time with the music.

Steam Illuminations Christmas Lights Train At Decorated Station

What Age Is Best For A Christmas Lights Train Ride?

Christmas Lights Train Rides are designed for the whole family, from 0-100 and beyond!  You know your children and your family best and know when they will get the most from the experience.

It is worth bearing in mind that most of the trains keep the lighting on board limited in order to enable easier viewing of outside.  Fairy-lights are typically used for minimal safety lighting.

It may be worth having some light-up bracelets, fidget toys and snacks with you to distract restless children if their attention on the outside wanes.

That being said, with music, narration, disco lights, perhaps even some carriage-wide games, and the excitement of being out after dark, hopefully even the most restless of little ones should have plenty to occupy them.

Most of the trains are unable to take pushchairs due to the age and layout of the carriages.  There are also unlikely to be toilet facilities on board the trains.  However most offer a break in the journey where facilities are available.  Specific accessibility arrangements should be checked directly with the organiser.

How Long Is The Train Ride?

Obviously this varies locally but most seem to last around 60-90mins.  They typically include a station stop along the route (often at the end of the route to enable the engine to switch ends).  This break allows passengers to get off the train, stretch legs, use the facilities and of course capture those all-important photos and videos of the illuminated train!

UK Christmas Light Trails

Find your nearest Christmas light trail and enjoy a magical December evening with your family.

Do The Train Rides Include Food?

Again this will vary locally.  However food is not typically included in the ticket price.

Most of the trains either offer refreshments for sale at the stations and/or the opportunity to pre-order festive treats to enjoy on board the train.

How Much Do Christmas Lights Train Rides Cost?

From our research we would suggest you should expect to pay around £20-30 per person, with some discounts available for family tickets.  Babes-in-arms usually seem to be free.  However, this of course varies from railway to railway so check the organiser’s website for latest pricing information.

Is This A Santa Train Ride?

No, these Christmas Light Train Rides are quite a different experience.  Whilst a handful of them do include either a Santa experience or the option to add one on, they are not intended to focus on the man in red.  Instead these are far more like a Christmas light walking trails – full of festive wonder but without the direct link to the North Pole!
