The Rapid Rise of the Clutch Pro Tour
- By Richard Cole
- August 1, 2023
The Clutch Tour , a third-tier golf tour recognized by the European Tour, was founded in 2020 by former professional golfer Tom Hayward, who wanted to create a more accessible and inclusive tour for players of all backgrounds and abilities. It was launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted the schedules and incomes of many golfers, especially those at the lower levels of the sport. The Tour aimed to provide a safe and competitive environment for players to showcase their skills and earn a living from the game they love.
The Tour consists of four tiers: the Clutch Pro Tour, the Clutch Amateur Tour, the Clutch Junior Tour, and the Clutch Super Series. Each tier has its own schedule, prize money, and ranking system, but they all share the same vision of providing equal opportunities and exposure for male and female golfers.
The Clutch Pro Tour started with a few events in March 2020, before expanding to a full season of 15 events from June to October 2020. It attracted some notable players, such as Andy Sullivan, who won the Stoneham event in July 2020 with a record-breaking score of 27-under-par. The inaugural Order of Merit was won by Mitch Waite, who is currently playing on the European Challenge Tour.
The 2021 season saw the Tour grow in size and stature, with 22 official events and increased prize money. The tour also partnered with several sponsors, such as Mojo Masters, Bluespace Media, and Simplicity Digital. The season featured some impressive performances, such as Harley Smith’s win at the Prince’s Classic as an amateur, Curtis Knipes’ two victories at The Belfry and Remedy Oak, and Henry Sheridan-Mills’ double triumph at the Bluespace Media South of England Open and Kedleston Park Classic. The 2021 Order of Merit was won by Australian, Daniel Gaunt.
The 2022 season , titled as the Mizuno Next Gen Series for sponsorship reasons, was the third season of the Clutch Pro Tour and consisted of 25 events, including six majors, with a total prize fund of Β£700,000. The tour also offered 44 Challenge Tour, 5 DP World Tour and 1 LET invite for the top performers. Highlights included OJ Farrell, who won two events and finished second in the Order of Merit and George Bloor , who won the Mizuno Open, one of the majors, and also qualified for the Challenge Tour. The Order of Merit ultimately being won by Giles Evans with two wins and nine top-10 finishes.
In December 2022, it was announced that the Clutch Pro Tour and the Tartan Pro Tour would become official feeder tours to the Challenge Tour in place of the now-defunct PGA EuroPro Tour. The Clutch Pro Tour would offer Challenge Tour status to the top two players on the Order of Merit, as well as invitations to selected events for other high-ranked players.
The 2023 season saw another huge increase in prize money, with 15 Tier 1 events offering a guaranteed purse of Β£60,000 and another 3 events with a Β£100,000 purse. The total Tour purse for Tiers 1 & 2 was increased to an impressive Β£1.8 million. On top of that, the Tour will be providing over 40 invites onto the Challenge Tour and DP World Tour, helping to continue its core mission of developing up and coming talent. As of the end of July 2023, there have been 12 completed Tier 1 events, with Brandon Robinson Thompson leading the order of merit following three wins and six top-10s in the 9 tournaments played. Following his latest win at the end of June, Brandon followed this up by qualifying for the 151st British Open, where he made the cut, eventually finishing 59th. With 5 more events remaining in the season before the Tour Championship at Royal Norwich, it promises to be another exciting season on the Tour.
The Clutch Pro Tour is a remarkable success story that showcases the resilience and talent of professional golfers in the UK. It has provided a platform for players to showcase their skills, earn a living, and progress their careers during challenging times. More importantly, it has also attracted attention from fans, media, sponsors, and other tours, who have recognized the quality and potential of the tour and its players. The Clutch Pro Tour is not only a feeder tour to the Challenge Tour and the DP World Tour hierarchy; it is also a tour that stands on its own merits and delivers exciting golf entertainment.

Crunch the Numbers: How to Calculate Golf Handicap Like a Pro
Last Updated on November 5, 2023
Golf is a challenging sport that requires skill and dedication. To truly improve your game, you need to understand how to calculate golf handicap. A golf handicap can help you keep track of your progress over time and adjust for course difficulty when playing with different players. Itβs not as daunting as it sounds β with the right information, calculating your golf handicap can be easy. In this blog post, weβll walk through all the steps necessary to accurately calculate golf handicap , so you can start improving today.
Table of Contents:
Gather your scores, calculate your handicap index.
- Adjust For Course Difficulty
Track Your Progress
Playing with players of similar handicaps, competing in tournaments.
Gathering your scores is an important part of calculating your handicap index. Itβs the only way to get an accurate representation of your golfing ability and track progress over time. To begin, you should collect all of the scores from the past 20 rounds you have played. This includes any tournaments or competitions as well as casual games with friends.
Once all 20 rounds have been collected, make sure each one has been entered into a spreadsheet correctly so that calculations will be easier later on in the process β you donβt want any mistakes here. Make sure all relevant information, such as date played, course name/number, rating/slope rating (if known), tee box used (menβs/womenβs) etc., is included along with each individual hole score for every round recorded before moving onto step two: Calculating Your Handicap Index.
Calculating your handicap index is an important step in improving your golf game. A handicap index is a numerical measure of a golferβs potential ability on the course, and it can be used to compare players of different skill levels. The USGA (United States Golf Association) has developed a formula for calculating a playerβs handicap index that takes into account their scores from multiple rounds of golf .
The first step in calculating your handicap index is to use the USGA-approved formula. This formula uses data from at least five 18-hole, or ten 9-hole rounds played over the last year. For each round, you must record both your score and the Course Rating for that particular course (this information can usually be found online). Once you have all this data collected, you will need to calculate whatβs known as βDifferential Scoresβ for each round by subtracting the Course Rating from your score for that round.
Next, take these Differential Scores and apply them to another USGA-approved formula which calculates an Adjusted Gross Score (AGS). This AGS takes into account any unusually high or low scores during those five/ten rounds so that they donβt skew your overall average too much one way or another. Finally, once you have calculated this AGS number, divide it by 0.96 to get an initial Handicap Index value β this should give you a good starting point when playing against other players with similar abilities.
Itβs also important to note that some courses may require additional adjustments due to their difficulty level compared with other courses β if this is necessary, then add or subtract strokes based on how difficult the course was relative to others before dividing by 0.96 again. With these steps followed correctly, you should now have an accurate representation of where your current skills are at and how they compare with other players.
Adjust for Course Difficulty
When calculating your handicap index, it is important to take into account the difficulty of the course you are playing. This can be done by looking at two ratings: slope rating and course rating. Slope rating measures how difficult a course is for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer, while course rating measures the expected score of an average player on that particular golf course.
It is essential to be aware of the courses you are playing when computing your handicap index so that your scores precisely reflect your ability. Slope ratings range from 55 (easiest) to 155 (most difficult), with a higher number indicating greater difficulty for bogey golfers. For instance, shooting an 80 on a course with a slope rating of 125 would count differently than shooting an 80 on one with a slope rating of 105.
Course ratings measure how hard or easy each hole is relative to par for all players regardless of their skill level and range from 68 (easiest) to 78 (most difficult). A lower number indicates easier holes, while higher numbers indicate tougher ones. However, these numbers do not necessarily correspond directly with slope ratings because they measure different things. For instance, some courses may have high-slope but low-course ratings due to having easier holes despite being tough in general.
Tracking your progress in golf is an important part of improving your game. Itβs not enough to play and hope for the best. You need to pay attention to how youβre doing over time, both good and bad. Keeping track of your scores can help you identify patterns that will help you get better.
Your handicap index is a great way to measure improvement or decline in performance over time. A handicap index is calculated using the average score from a certain number of rounds. Usually 10-20, depending on the system used by your club or association. As you play more rounds, this number should change as it reflects your current skill level at any given moment.
Different courses have varying difficulty levels, so it is important to consider this when examining changes in your score over time. For instance, if one round was played on an easier course than another round, there may be less variation between them even though they were played at different times and days. Failing to take this into account could lead to inaccurate conclusions about improvements or declines in performance.
Finally, use your handicap index wisely when making decisions about which tournaments or competitions are right for you based on where you stand currently with regards to skill level compared with other players who might be competing against each other at those events too. This can help ensure that everyone has a fair chance of winning while still providing an enjoyable experience overall, regardless of whether someone wins or loses their match-up.
Use Your Handicap Index Wisely
A handicap index is a numerical measure of a golferβs potential ability on the course based on their past performance. Itβs important to remember that itβs just an estimate and not necessarily indicative of how you will play in any given round.
When playing with other players, make sure they have similar handicaps to yours. This will ensure that everyone has an equal chance of winning and having fun during the round. If youβre playing with someone who has a much lower or higher handicap than yours, then you may find yourself struggling to keep up or feeling like youβre not being challenged enough.
Your handicap index should also be taken into consideration when entering tournaments or competitions. Make sure that the tournament is appropriate for your skill level so that you donβt feel overwhelmed by tougher competition or bored by easier opponents. Itβs important to challenge yourself but also know your limits to still have fun while competing against others at the same level as yourself.
Calculating your golf handicap can be a daunting task, but it doesnβt have to be. By gathering your scores, calculating your Handicap Index, adjusting for course difficulty and tracking your progress, you will be able to calculate golf handicap with ease. So donβt let the process intimidate you; use this guide as a starting point, and soon enough, youβll become an expert in calculating golf handicaps .
