Introducing The Picturebooks: The blues-rock duo taking LA by storm

Chains. Choppers. Bullets. This German biker-blues duo will get your motor running

Nothing much happens in Gütersloh. But if last year you’d cocked an ear to the night air, you might have heard the distant, grubby thump of The Picturebooks tracking their second album.

“We rented a barn in the middle of nowhere,” says singer Fynn Claus Grabke. We’d record, skateboard and repair motorbikes between takes. At one point we had a listening session, looked at each other and said: ‘Fuck, yeah. We got it.’”

Grabke and drummer Philipp Mirtschink are adamant that they’re not just another garage-blues duo in the White Stripes tradition. Meeting as teenagers at the local skate park, their tastes were already off-kilter (“All our friends were listening to Blink 182; we were into Bowie, The Cure, the Velvet Underground and Krautrock”). Now, on The Picturebooks’ second album, Home Is A Heartache , experimentation abounds, from the title track’s wolf howls to the clink of Native American percussion. “I couldn’t afford cymbals,” explains Mirtschink, “so we came up with different stuff, like chains and sleigh bells wrapped around our feet. A friend built me a sleigh bell out of Smith & Wesson shells. It sounds amazing.”

Embellished with slide guitar, chanted backing vocals and lo-fi production, the result is less like a traditional album and more like the soundtrack to a dust-caked road movie.

“It takes you to a certain place,” says Grabke. “Tribal. Unforgiving. Desert. We often work with visuals. We’ll be discussing a scene in a movie, and then we’ll jam out on it. Or with a song like Inner Demons , that’s about these crazy panic attacks that I got on tour. All of a sudden, I’d be exploding on the inside. I told Philipp about it, and we said, ‘Let’s translate that into music.’ So that song starts real slow, then builds up to complete madness, then goes away again real slowly. We wanted to make a sound of our own.”

The pair’s savage musicianship is equally idiosyncratic, based more on impulse than on technical prowess. “We’re really bad musicians,” Grabke shrugs. “Both of us never really learnt our instruments. To this day I can’t play a chord. I’ve kind of invented these open tunings. Professional musicians come to our shows and they’re like: ‘Man, this is not the way you’re supposed to play.’ Because Philipp just bangs on his drums, y’know? We go through multiple drum sets on tour, because he destroys them.”

For now, with The Picturebooks temporarily relocated to Los Angeles, Gütersloh has once again fallen silent. But whenever this duo roll into town, ear protectors are obligatory. “Our shows are intense, sweaty, loud,” says Grabke. “People have described them as almost like a ceremony. Philipp and I have to get into a certain state of mind when we go on stage. I love it when that sparks other people to go crazy too.”

It was my first The Picturebooks concert. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was mainly curious how just two guys could create such a ruckus.

And, boy they can. I'm really not sure how they stack up against the best guitarists or drummers (since I don't play either instrument), but I was mesmerized by their sheer energy, focus and drive. They sure are one of those bands that put their albums (which are themselves great) to shame in their concerts. They are raw, primitive, furious, angry and original. Their vast world of endless desert, native rhythms and (I believe) love of bikes has been spiced by dashes of Morricone and Seasick Steve (sorry guys, this is what it sounds to me) on their later works. They motored through the concert so forcefully I couldn't believe it was over (and it was a good sixteen songs on their setlist), there was never a moment where they would let go and take a breather. And to top that off, they managed to come over as the kindest and gentlest human beings who were just happy we gave them a listen.

I'm 51 and I drove 800 kilometres to see their show, and I'll definitely try to see them again. Kudos.

The Picturebooks Announce European Tour, And Lzzy Hale Collab

The Picturebooks have announced their long-awaited “On The Road Again” Tour which is set to take place in 2022! Check dates below.

The tour has been announced alongside a new collab from the duo with Lzzy Hale of Halestorm. The last year has seen The Picturebooks do various collabs with the likes of Dennis Lyxzén (Refused) and Neil Fallon (Clutch), and additional musical guests Ryan Sinn (The Distillers) and Dave Dinsmore (Brant Bjork).

The hard-working primal blues duo gained so much inspiration from these experiences to strive for even more astonishing collaborations and have now recorded a song with the outstanding Grammy winning vocalist Lzzy Hale of Halestorm. The new song, entitled ‘Rebel’, will premiere on Friday 14th May and will be accompanied by a stunning video filmed in Nashville and Berlin by The Picturebooks and Lzzy Hale.

“‘Rebel’ started out as an idea with Lzzy in mind and quickly surpassed everybody´s expectations.” The band said about the collaboration. “Lzzy tapped into something really special with both lyrics and vocal performance and when we heard her voice on the track for the first time we were totally blown away! Give this one a listen at full volume and be ready to be floored!”

The duos new “On The Road Again” Tour will see the band heading accross Europe and the UK. Here are the dates:

Make sure you give the blog host a complimentary copy of your book. With my book, Jamie's Pet, I give them a copy of the book and a couple of days later I heard back. They told me "It would be a honor for them to do a book review, author review, or a book reading." That is when you know you have a good book. You have hooked the blog host and now you have to hook their readers into buying your book.

You don't need to do all virtual book tours and book blog tours at once. Pick out one or two virtual book tours a month or every two weeks depending on your financial situation. Make sure they offer different promotional tools. You don't want duplicate book tours at the same time. You want to make sure that you cover the book market with different book offerings, book giveaways, book reviews, book and author interviews, spotlight radio interviews, podcasts, webinars that create wonderful book buzz. Once you are finished with the guest blog interview or book review and it has been added to the host blog's website, you need to link back from your website to their website. Your next step is to share with your social media networks and the host blog website shares with their social media networks. This is how your book buzz and audience grow.

Building an audience for your book will take a lot of energy, planning, time, and don't forget patience. Do what will feel comfortable for you and stay within your promotional and marketing budget. That is the key. Don't get carried away because virtual book tours are just one portion of your promotional and marketing plan and campaign. With the virtual book tours I don't follow the normal rule where you just concentrate on book tours for two to four weeks. I do them throughout the year until I do them all. As an author you are always trying to find new ways, old ways to promote and market your book. You are not doing it for weeks then waiting for the money to roll in. Remember, you need to create book buzz 24 hours a day even when you are sleeping. That is why virtual book tours are a powerful promotional tool for authors because they create book buzz while you are sleeping.
