Cotopaxi Allpa 42 boarding plane travel luggage

Building on its fun and functional ethos, Cotopaxi beefs up its best-selling product. The Allpa Travel Pack earns big points for clever design, clean aesthetic, and a surprising number of handy — and hidden — features.

I have one piece of gear I’d bring, on every outing it’s a plush, cozy, warm — and frankly cool — fleece onesie. And while it’s great at any campsite, it has one noticeable drawback: It’s big and heavy.

For car camping trips in the shoulder seasons, that’s no problem. But for any adventure that involves overhead bin space, and baggage fees, that’s a deal-breaker. At least it was until a recent trip to Moab.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42 liter travel pack

This month, I managed to pack all the essentials for a multiday gear test — clothes for at least 5 days, toiletries, camp essentials (headlamp, mess kit, power bank), some extra cycling gear, and more. But, most importantly, I had room enough to pack that precious onesie, too.

New this fall, Cotopaxi expands its Allpa Travel Pack line to a bigger, beefier 42L version. Still eking under typical airplane storage limits, the Allpa 42L gobbled up all the necessities, and a few luxury extras, I could throw at it. I used it for a 5-day adventure that required traveling with both gear and my laptop on a small, regional jet.

In short:  Despite flying on a plane too small to stand up in, I carried the Allpa 42L on board while others had to gate-check their backpacking packs and small-wheeled carry-ons. And that was with a pack loaded with more gear and clothes than I typically fit in two smaller packs.

The Allpa does a lot for its size thanks to clever but not overwhelming organizational options built inside. All those winning features come with a price —  the  price — at $220.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L: Carry-On Friendly

Cotopaxi Allpa 42 liter travel pack

No matter how many times I travel, I always stuff my carry-on as full as it’ll go. And I never check bags unless absolutely necessary. So when the call inevitably comes over the airport PA system — “we’re looking for volunteers to gate-check their bags” — I always question whether I’ve gone too far with my bulging carry-on.

So it was on a recent trip from Denver’s monstrous international airport to Moab’s comparably adorable ma-and-pa landing strip. Despite Cotopaxi’s promise that the Allpa 42L was “carry-on friendly,” I had to wonder if that applied to airplanes you had to walk up a staircase on the tarmac to board.

Although I accepted the green gate-check tag, I tore it off at the last second, trusting Cotopaxi’s promise. This was a gear test, after all. I boarded the plane, ducked my head to walk the aisle, and found my seat.

And though the pack — impressively crammed with virtually everything I’d need for 2 nights in town and 3 days biking the White Rim Trail — wouldn’t possibly fit in the overhead bin, I slid it easily under the seat in front of me.

Given the standard size of the seats and diminutive size of the overhead bins on this aircraft, I believe that Allpa 42L would have no trouble squeezing into the typical overhead compartment of other planes.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Packability

Undoubtedly, the pack wins on carry-on-ability. But that 42L capacity can be difficult to understand — what does that  mean ? Here’s what I stuffed into the Allpa 42L.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42 travel pack unpacked

That’s my infamous onesie, two pairs of biking shorts, a wind/rain shell, a jersey, three shirts, four pairs of underwear, dopp kit, MTB shoes, “Into the Wilderness” book, extra sunglasses, notebook and pens, laptop and charger, power bank and phone cord, gloves, beanie, and helmet (clipped to the outside). Also, I stuffed eight pairs of socks in the shoes (approximately 4 days of travel doubled).

And to be fair, I had packed an extra chamois, a coat, and a hoodie. But I ditched them because I hate overpacking.

For reference, here’s what that looked like in the bag (minus the helmet):

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L: Organization

Like its predecessors, the Allpa 42L hangs its hat on abundant, but not overwhelming, organization options. The large zippered pocket on the right side makes apparent where the bulk of packing belongs. For those who use packing cubes — I’m a big fan of Eagle Creek — this main pocket accommodates all sizes and adds an extra layer of sanity.

Two smaller pockets grace the left side. The larger of the two works great for extra shoes and a few other necessities. I should note, the flap on this pocket houses an included rain cover, but it will also handle a few smaller, thinner items too. Above it lies another zippered pocket, great for charging devices and other smaller items you don’t need immediate access to.

Outside the pack, a top zip pocket will hold a wallet or passport, gum, and other quick-grab items. I found it was perfect for the dopp kit I needed to cram somewhere (for the onesie).

A laptop sleeve just inside the back panel, accessible from a side zip, will fit a 15-inch laptop. That same soft-lined pocket is subdivided with a sleeve for a 12.5-inch tablet and another for a 6.5-inch cellphone. Though, most of us keep that phone within easier reach.

Finally, the pack has a single bottle pocket to carry a vessel up to 3 inches in diameter. It’s made with 1,000-denier TPU-coated polyester. So while it’s not waterproof or submersible, the outer will shed most mist and light rain (and abrasion) — though the zippers aren’t waterproof.

Allpa Carry Options

Cotopaxi Allpa 42 travel pack

Staying true to the Allpa line, the 42L capacity provides many carrying choices. A removable hip belt, hideaway shoulder straps, and a molded, padded back panel allow wearers a very comfortable backpack option. But take off the belt, unclip and stow the shoulder straps, and the Allpa offers a briefcase handle and removable shoulder sling.

I found the backpack configuration or straight handle carry to work best for most situations.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Pack Review

I asked Cotopaxi how significant this upgrade to the Allpa line was, and that’s when the brand told me the Allpa was its best-selling product overall. So if it ain’t broke, why fix it?

But from my test, it looks like Cotopaxi avoided changing anything that made the 35L Allpa so great.

Dodge Baggage Fees With the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L: Review

The Cotopaxi Allpa's $190 sticker price may seem high for a carry-on piece. But a clever combination of design, organization, and features may actually save travelers money on baggage fees in the long run. Read more…

Here’s everything I liked about the Allpa 42L . Multiple carry options mean I could choose the easiest configuration for the load. Plus, the load lifter straps worked well to make backpack carry as comfortable as possible (especially when crammed full of gear).

Like the Allpa packs before it, the 42L sports several low-profile lash points. I love being able to save interior space by ‘biner-ing a few extra items to the outside of my pack.

Plus, all of the Allpa’s storage pockets are bigger and roomier than you think. The top outer pocket held a full dopp kit in addition to my wallet, keys, pens, snacks, and other quick-grab items. And the zip panels on each of the interior pockets use stretch mesh. So even when you overfill a compartment, the pockets are forgiving enough that you can get away with more than you’d expect.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42 liter travel pack

The main compartment worked great for a few days of clothes on my Moab test. And it held a week’s worth of smartly packed garments for less-rugged travel. The two pockets opposite the main compartment held all the miscellany of travel — books, chargers, headlamps, extra cash, etc. And the larger pocket took on a pair of my size 13 shoes no problem — with a little room left over to cram the underwear I forgot to pack the first time.

And while I didn’t use the included rain cover, it looks like a standard pack cover. It’s a helpful addition and can be removed to eke out a little more storage space in a pinch. Also, the laptop sleeve will accommodate all the most common tech you’re likely to need.

Finally, like all Cotopaxi products, the overall aesthetic is sharp and attractive. Even the all-black pack I used — a departure from the brand’s trademark color mashups — looks undeniably cool. The 1,000-denier outer repelled some spilled coffee and what little scuff marks came from being tossed around the Utah desert rubbed right out.

I like this pack a lot. But there are a few pack features that don’t quite stand up to the rest. First, the removable hip belt. While the Allpa’s convertibility is great, the hip belt stands in the way of on-the-fly changes.

Put simply, while the shoulder straps tuck away nicely, the thicker hip belt can leave you wondering where to stuff it if you remove it. I was able to cram it in the back panel, but it left a noticeable lump.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42 liter travel pack

Also, the bottle pocket. On the one hand, this is a super handy addition — one you won’t find on smaller Allpas. But it only handles a bottle up to 3 inches in diameter. When I travel, I prefer to bring larger vessels. This may be an issue for you, or it may not. And if it is, Cotopaxi offers a mesh bottle pocket add-on (plus some other accessories).

Lastly, with the bag’s soft construction, over-stuffers like me will have to be creative to get the main zipper closed. This was no issue on smaller treks, but with that onesie, closing the pack took some extra TLC (tough loving care).

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Pack: Verdict

If you hate checking a bag as I do and you’re not afraid to stuff a carry-on to near bursting, the Allpa 42L is a workhouse you’ll love. It offers tons more carrying versatility and organization than a duffel, but it seems to take everything you’ll throw at it — just like a duffel would.

In short, the story of the Allpa is “everything you’d need, but not too much.” It has loads of organization but not so many pockets the pack becomes confusing. And it’s got lots of lash points but no ugly daisy chains running the length of the pack. There are several carry options, but you can ditch what you don’t use.

And if you don’t mind a small bottle pocket or manhandling an overstuffed pack to close the zipper, the Allpa won’t disappoint. It’s an investment at $220, but if this pack holds up to future abuse as it did across Moab, it makes for a smart buy. • The lockable zipper features end up getting in the way more often than they're helpful, at least in our testing
  • Internal mesh dividers stretch and don't compress, which can make the clamshell hard to close

Full Review

With its signature Cotopaxi look and massive amount of storage space, the Cotopaxi Allpa 42L could be a solid contender for your next one-bag travel backpack.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Solo

The Utah-based brand designed this pack to be carry-on compatible, “ultra hardy,” and have more space for longer trips compared to its 35L and 28L versions.

A couple of members from our team have been testing the Allpa 42L for the last month in Michigan, Minnesota, and Kentucky—so we’ve had plenty of time to get a feel for this backpack and how it functions in different adventures and travel situations.

Let’s dive right in.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L In Detroit

Materials & Aesthetic

The 1000D TPU coated polyester gives the Allpa 42L that signature Cotopaxi look—similar to the smaller Allpa packs, including the 35L Allpa we’ve reviewed a while back. This material is weather-resistant and quite grippy, which can be a good or bad thing. Although it’s great that it stays in place when you set it down, that grippiness can also make it more difficult to jam it into an overhead compartment or under your airplane seat.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L TPU Material

Plus, at 42L, this bag is a little bit larger, so you’re bound to encounter those inherent big-bag-little-space problems when trying to fit this thing into tight quarters.

While the material on the Cotopaxi Allpa 42L is durable and weather-resistant, it does scar easily. After a month of testing, we’re stuck with some permanent marks on the front of the bag.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Scuff

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Cotopaxi product without the llama logo. We’re digging the black-on-black logo on the Allpa 42L we’ve been testing. The llama is shinier than the rest of the matte black material which makes it stick out just enough.

Side note: if you’re wondering why the llama logo, Cotopaxi picked this because llamas are happy, versatile, outdoor-focused, and seem to make people smile. It’s a simple reason—and that’s good enough for us.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Logo

At the time of this review, the Allpa 42L comes in two different colors: the black version we’ve been testing, and a more colorful indigo option. If you know Cotopaxi, then you know that the folks over there love mixing up their colorways—just check out other Cotopaxi gear we’ve reviewed like the Teca Windbreaker and the Batac 16L Daypack . And while we usually go for more subdued colorways that blend into the crowd, we appreciate that they offer some unique, fun options.

Of course, we’ve polled our Instagram audience on the overall look of this bag and the result was loud and clear—80% of you guys you liked it! That’s pretty impressive.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Nylon Material

Wrapping up the rest of the materials on the Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Pack, we have 840D ballistic nylon on areas of the bag not covered by the TPU coated polyester. This is durable and rugged nylon gives the bag some great flexibility.

This pack also features durable and chunky YKK zippers—some of the best out there. Along with Duraflex buckles on the hardware, including the sternum strap clips and the clips that attach the shoulder straps to the bag.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Zippers

Exterior Components

The harness system on the Cotopaxi Allpa 42L is solid. And comfortable. The shoulder straps have some super spongy and cushy foam, which keeps this thing riding nice even for long stretches.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Shoulder Straps

You’ll find load-lifters at the top of the shoulder straps, which is an important feature for a bag of this size. Load-lifters lift the load by pulling the pack closer to your upper back, making for a more balanced carry. They also help you get the bag totally fine-tuned if you adjust it with the shoulder straps and hip belt. These load lifters also have a fabric sleeve on the front, so you can stuff the excess strap inside to get a cleaner look. Gotta love that #DangleFreeExperience.

On the front, there’s an adjustable sternum strap that slides along a rail that follows the curve of the shoulder straps. We like this style of sternum strap because its adjustable, but also securely fastened to the bag.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Sternum Strap

Moving down the straps, the Cotopaxi Allpa 42L has Duraflex buckles that allow you to clip and unclip the shoulder straps from the bag and stow them away. We’re digging this option—especially for situations where you’ll be checking the bag or just want a more streamlined package while you’re carrying it in duffle mode or by the handles.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Shoulder Strap Adjustment

Hidden behind the back panel is space for a hip belt. We’re really glad Cotopaxi included a hip belt option on the Allpa 42L—it’s pretty much mandatory for a bag of 42L and, in our opinion, any bag over 35L.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Hip Belt

One of the biggest complaints with the Allpa 35L is actually that the hip belt is not adjustable or removable—so we’re excited to see that it’s both removable and adjustable (height-wise) in the Allpa 42L. The adjustability will also accommodate longer torsos much better than the 35L version does. We love that Cotopaxi is listening to its customers and reviews like ours to constantly work toward a better overall experience. Editor’s Note: The Allpa 35L has been updated to include the same adjustable, removable hip belt.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Back Panel

On the back panel of the Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Pack, a decently stiff frame sheet gives the bag a little bit of structure. There’s also some breathable padded mesh on the back to help avoid that dreaded swamp back as much as possible—although with backpacks (as we always say) you can’t avoid it completely.

Now, let’s talk about some of the other external features, shall we?

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Top Handle

First, the Cotopaxi Allpa 42L has four handles—one on each side of the pack. The two side handles are made from a simple nylon webbing-like material, while the top and bottom handles have more padding making them more comfortable to grab.

No matter which handles you grab, the weight of this bag seems to stay pretty centered and evenly distributed—it’s the little things, ya know?

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Side Handle

On the right-hand side of the backpack, you’ll find a water bottle pocket. While a dedicated spot for your water bottle is nice to have, the pocket isn’t super-stretchy or large, so it’s optimal for smaller water bottles of coffee tumblers .

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Water Bottle Pocket

Next, you’ll find a variety of lash loops on the outside of the bag—handy for attaching carabiners or other accessories. These attachment points add some nice functionality without making the bag look too much like an outdoors or hiking backpack.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Lash Points

There’s also theft-turn zipper loops on the outside of the Allpa 42L—helpful for keeping your bag secure, but they’ve been a little cumbersome for us. We’ve found ourselves leaving the bag unzipped just a little since the security loop get in the way of fully closing the pack. And fishing the zipper through the loop takes a little longer than we like when getting in and out of the bag frequently. That said, it’s a handy feature for some security and peace-of-mind, so your mileage may vary.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Locking Zippers

Lastly, messenger mode. To get the Allpa 42L into messenger mode, you basically attach a strap to the lash points on the outside of the pack. Like we mentioned earlier, you can stash away the backpack straps to make a cleaner package, but this thing is still pretty bulky to wear crossbody or use as a duffle. It is, however, better than some other bags we’ve tested of a similar size.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Messenger Bag Carry

Inside the Pack

Okay, on to the inside of the Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Pack—which has some useful internal organization for a backpack this size.

Starting at the front, the quick-grab pocket at the top is quite large—it goes down about a third of the bag and has some built-in dimension. We’ve been using this quick-grab pocket for toiletries , tech gear, and other things we need easy access to in transit. There’s also plenty of organization going on.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Quick-Grab Pocket Access

On the front flap, we’ve got three equally-sized liner pockets with a bit of elastic at the top to hold items inside. On the back, there’s a zippered mesh pocket with two more liner pockets inside—one covers about two-thirds the width of the pocket, and the other about a third. You’ll also find a simple but robust key clip in here, too.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Quick-Grab Pocket Packed

Next up, the laptop compartment. When you’re wearing the Cotopaxi Allpa 42L, access to the laptop compartment is on your right side. We like this pocket a bit more than the 35L version’s laptop compartment—where we had trouble even fitting a 15-inch laptop without a case on it. The compartment is way bigger on this 42L version and we like that the sleeve is smartly positioned towards the center of the bag to protect your computer from unexpected drops.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Laptop Compartment

There’s also a liner pocket on the front side of the laptop compartment. It’s slightly padded and a good spot for a tablet, notebook , computer charger, or any other tech accessories you can fit—although flatter items seem to be better. Now, we do want to point out that this is a horizontal pocket in a vertical bag. There’s an elastic strap to help keep your things in place, but we wish there was a zipper instead—without one, your things can get jostled around and fall out into the main capacity of the laptop compartment.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Side Access To Main Compartment

On the opposite side of the Allpa 42L, you’ll find another zipper that looks a lot like the laptop compartment zipper. But this one opens up into the main compartment of the bag.

We really dig that you can access the main compartment of the bag without fully opening the clamshell and the mesh dividers (we’ll get to that shortly). However, we’ve often found ourselves confused as to which side was the laptop area and which side was the access to the main compartment. That’ll probably get better if you pick up this bag and get used to using it, but you may need to make a mental note in the beginning.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Main Compartment Clamshell Opening

Moving onto the Allpa 42L’s main compartment—it opens up fully clamshell-style. Like a suitcase.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Main Compartment, Right Side

On the right side of the opening (the part that’s closer to your back when wearing it), you pretty much have a giant bucket that’s sectioned off with a mesh divider. This is the compartment that’s accessible from that back zipper that’s opposite of the laptop compartment. We love the size of this compartment and it offers ample space for packing cubes —you can cube it out and organize it however you see fit. You can also put a bunch of clothes just free-floating in here, although we generally prefer packing cubes.

There’s also a small zipper pocket hidden inside this main bucket. It’s a nice place to stash valuable items.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Main Compartment, Left Side Top Pocket

The left side of this clamshell is where the bag gets interesting. Cotopaxi doesn’t leave you with another empty bucket on this side. Instead, there’s some clever organization going on. Including a pocket that feels like a built-in packing cube—which is nice for clothes or anything else. Of course, you could also use packing cubes here for additional compartmentalization.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Main Compartment, Left Side Bottom Pocket

There are two pockets on this side of the main compartment—a smaller one up top, and a larger on underneath it. We’ve been using the smaller pocket, which has mesh so you can see what’s inside, as a place to store the messenger strap and rain cover when not in use. The larger pocket is the one that’s packing cube-like. And it has another zippered pocket on mesh flap—ideal for flatter items.

With this setup, it can be tempting to overpack each side—and since the mesh on the top is a little bit stretchy, you can easily get into a position where you can’t quite close the main clamshell (without jumping on it like in the movies—do people really do that?). It’s not the biggest deal in the world, but it’s definitely something to be aware of. If you’re fully packing each side, you might have trouble zipping this thing shut.

Durability & Testing

Our founder, Tom, and video editor, Mark have been testing the Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Pack in Minnesota, Michigan, and Kentucky over the past month.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L In Use

Generally speaking, we like the improvements we’ve seen on the 42L Allpa compared to the 35L version—including the adjustable hip belt and the improved harness system.

We do have some qualms with the size of the bag and how it packs out, though. It can start to feel bulky quick. There’s plenty of fabric, but not a ton of structure. And when you’re packing this thing full, you may find certain parts of the bag bulging out. We typically prefer bags over 40 liters to have some structure to them.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L In Detroit

At one point in our testing, we had the Allpa 42L fully packed out on a flight to Minnesota. One part of the bag was sticking out so much that it actually made it difficult to shove the bag into the overhead bin. Granted, it would have been easier if we had spent more time making sure everything was completely flat, but a more padded and structured bag will obviously hold its shape no matter what you put inside.

Usage Timeline

Condition: Excellent

  • Really digging the entire harness system
  • Feels like just the right amount of organization for a larger travel bag
  • The materials feel sturdy and durable

Harness system is very comfortable, but the bag gets bulky quickly, depending on how it’s packed.

Condition: Good

The materials feel sturdy and durable, although some permanent marks have developed on the exterior fabric.

Cotopaxi allpa 42l travel backpack review | my real-world test.

I personally test the new Cotopaxi Allpa 42 travel backpack to see how it holds up on the road

Product Reviews

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

Cotopaxi has made a name for itself with high-quality, brightly-colored luggage and outdoor apparel that’s sustainability-focused. I’ve also heard a lot of good things about Cotopaxi’s new Allpa 42L Travel Pack so like any good backpack nerd I wanted to test it out for myself… which is exactly what I did.

In this real-world Cotopaxi Allpa 42L backpack review, I’ve personally tested this funky backpack to find its strengths and weaknesses to see if it’s the right backpack for your travels.

How I Tested The Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Backpack

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

To test the Cotopaxi Allpa travel backpack I headed out on a two-week solo trip to Prague and Berlin.

I used my Allpa as my only piece of carry-on luggage on the flight from the US and then I traveled via train from Prague to Berlin. I’ve also used my Allpa during various shorter domestic trips and I’ve always used it as a carry-on backpack.

Ok, let’s get into my review…

I’ve personally tested nearly all the most popular travel backpacks on the market. Read my guide to the best travel backpacks to see the rest of my favorite picks.

A Quick Overview Of The Cotopaxi Allpa 42L

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

Cotopaxi designed their Allpa 42L travel backpack to be an eye-catching, weather-resistant backpack for multi-day/week+ urban adventures. It’s loaded with smart organizational features like pockets for all your gear and mesh dividers for the main compartment to keep all your stuff easily accessible.

Here’s how Cotopaxi describes the Allpa 42L:

The Allpa 42L Travel Pack protects and comfortably carries all your gear, whether it’s on your back, strapped to the roof of your car, or in the belly of a puddlejumper. The Allpa’s incredibly burly shell repels the elements and abrasion, while its padded, mesh suspension system and load lifter straps provide a comfortable carry during long walks to the hostel or all-out airport dashes. Via Cotopaxi.com

Cotopaxi says the Allpa 42 is designed for trips lasting 2 weeks or more but I still think 42L also works for shorter trips. That said, the Allpa also comes in a 35L and 28L versions if you’re looking for something smaller—visit REI to see the version Allpa versions.

Quick Note About Cotopaxi’s Values

One of the things that draws a lot of people to Cotopaxi is their company values. In addition to being a certified carbon-neutral company, they’re a Certified B Corporation—which means they meet high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials. They allocate 1% of our revenue to the Cotopaxi Foundation, which supports nonprofits like the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and United to Beat Malaria.

Ok folks, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty features of the Cotopaxi Allpa—including areas where the Allpa excels and where I think it can improve.

Overall, the Cotopaxi Allpa is a sleek and stylish backpack. There aren’t a ton of dangling straps or bulky pockets so you can move around with ease. The llama silhouette logo on the back is noticeable but not over the top—I appreciate that they didn’t stick a huge “Cotopaxi” under the logo.

Now let’s move on the Allpa’s to multiple colorway options…

Cotopaxi is famous for its trademark bright and eye-catching colors. The Allpa currently comes in around 5-6 color combos—including a special “Surprise Pack” version that’s constructed with multiple random-color pieces so every bag is different (you also won’t know what the bag looks like until you receive it so you could end up with a pretty funky-looking bag).

NOTE: I’ve noticed that the Cotopaxi website often runs out of certain colorways and then restocks them later so you might have to check back if you don’t see the color you want.

I truly appreciate how each color combo features high-contrast zippers—which help you quickly differentiate between the main compartment and the other compartments.

I’m a big fan of all the color options since most brands offer just one or maybe two colors. I went with the “Indigo” color since it’s a little more fun than the standard black I typically go with but it’s still fairly subtle.

The fabric on the back of the Allpa has a rubbery coated shell which adds a little more visual interest (as well as adding extra protection and weather resistance)—I’ll cover the bag material in more detail later in this article.

Harness System, Shoulder Straps, and Overall Comfort

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

All the bells and whistles mean nothing if the backpack isn’t comfortable to carry—luckily I found the Cotopaxi Allpa 42 to be plenty comfortable so I had no real issues when hauling this thing around Europe.

The padded backpack straps feature load lifters and the straps are curved to better fit the contours of your body—both of which help keep the bag close to your shoulders. The high-density foam used in the shoulder straps is slightly thinner than what I’ve found on other comparable travel backpacks but I still found it comfortable.

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

The Allpa also features mesh padding that covers the entire back of the bag. The mesh helps promote air circulation to make wearing the bag more comfortable.

Now I will say that the Allpa doesn’t have as advanced of a suspension system (i.e. shoulder straps) as other travel backpacks I’ve used. For example, the suspension systems on the Osprey Farpoint and Aer Travel Pack 3 more closely resemble what you’ll find on a hiking backpack so they cradle your shoulders better.

That said, the Allpa 42 is still plenty comfortable and I didn’t have any issues while wearing it—but I wanted to point it out since there is room for improvement.

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

The Allpa 42 comes with an easily removable hip belt (I removed mine before the trip). It’s a fairly minimalist hipbelt so it won’t offer a ton of extra support but it’s a nice addition. The backpack’s shoulder straps can also be easily tucked away—which is nice for carrying it through narrow train/plane aisles and for stowing the bag in the overhead compartment.

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

In addition, the Allpa comes with a removable duffle bag-style shoulder strap which lets you carry the bag like a duffle bag.

Materials, Zippers, Hardware, and Overall Construction

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

One of the first things I noticed about the Allpa was its sturdy construction and high-quality materials—after having used multiple backpacks you start to quickly notice where companies cut corners. It just feels nice. I mean… Cotopaxi offers a lifetime warranty on their bags so it makes sense that their stuff is well-made.

The exterior back shell of the Allpa is made from a very sturdy “rubbery” TPU-coated 1000D polyester which is scuff and weather-resistant—I’ve never seen this on any other bag but I think it works well (and it looks cool). The rest of the bag’s exterior paneling is constructed from lightweight yet durable 840D ballistic nylon. Both these fabrics can withstand plenty of abuse.

The stitching quality, sturdy plastic hardware, and overall construction of the Allpa feel nice—which also helps ensure longevity.

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

One of the weakest points of any backpack is the zippers so Cotopaxi only uses high-quality YKK zippers—including an extra beefy zipper on the bag’s main compartment (for when you overstuff your bag… which I am certainly guilty of doing). The zippers also have long zipper pulls and the zipper action is smooth.

The Allpa features a novel, low-tech anti-theft security strap that covers the exterior zippers—which are designed to prevent the zippers from being easily opened (see the photo above).

I have conflicting views on this security feature since it’s a simple yet effective way to keep your zippers secure but it also makes opening/closing the zippers somewhat of a pain. I do, however, like this system better than using those little luggage locks. So, overall it’s a minor annoyance and is probably a net positive.

One of the smartest features of this backpack is the multi-colored zippers (i.e. the main zipper on this bag is orange and the others are blue). This is super handy for helping quickly differentiate which zipper to use—most backpacks solely use black zippers so it’s hard to tell which compartment you’re opening since all the zippers look identical.

Exterior Organization Pockets and Laptop Sleeve

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

As I mentioned before, the Allpa is a relatively minimalist travel backpack so there aren’t a ton of external organizational pockets. A lot of bags I test go overboard with pockets and compartments which adds to the bag’s weight so I appreciate Cotopaxi’s restraint.

On the front of the backpack, you’ll find a small organizational stash pocket. It’s nothing crazy but it’s perfect for carrying a few smaller items like a wallet, small notebook, phone/camera, and other things you might need to quickly access. There is a smaller zippered mesh compartment inside and a handy key clip for added organization.

There is also a stretchy water bottle sleeve on the side of the bag (that can easily hold a wine bottle… I can personally attest to this).

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

One of my biggest criticisms of the Allpa is its laptop compartment.

On a positive note, I do like the side access zipper as this makes taking the laptop out of the bag a breeze—which is super handy at the airport.

But Cotopaxi didn’t build a false bottom into the bag’s laptop compartment so the only thing between your laptop and the hard ground is a little bit of fabric. Therefore, if you drop your bag or forget to set it down gently, there is a chance your laptop will smack the ground. I recommend sticking a rolled-up shirt under your laptop but it’s a little annoying you have to do that.

However, there is a pocket for a tablet that is protected so all good there—I personally try to avoid traveling with a laptop anyway.

Main Storage Compartment

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

I really like the way Cotopaxi designed the main storage compartment on the Allpa 42.

First, the Allpa has a “clamshell” style opening—which is just a fancy way of saying it opens like a standard suitcase. This is exactly what you want in a travel backpack since it makes packing/unpacking much easier.

Second, the Allpa 42 has approximately 42L of storage space so it can hold a surprisingly large amount of stuff.

Third, unlike many other travel backpacks, the main storage area of the Allpa 42 is split into two zones—the larger “main” compartment on the right side of the bag and two smaller compartments on the left side of the bag.

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

I was surprised how much I ended up liking the bag’s approach to compartmentalization. For example, I would keep smaller things like socks and underwear on the left side of the bag and larger items (shirts, pants, etc.) on the right side. This made finding what I needed much easier.

Furthermore, each compartment has a sturdy zippered mesh flap so it’s almost like the bag comes with built-in packing cubes. However, I still recommend using packing cubes with this bag for extra organization.

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

The Allpa also has a zipper on the side of the bag that opens to the backpack’s main compartment. This is a handy feature since there are often times when you want to get something from your bag but you don’t want to open the entire bag.

Other Features of The Allpa 42

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

The Cotopaxi Allpa had grab handles on the top of the bag, on both sides, and the bottom—so it’s super easy to grab no matter how the bag is stored away. This is a great feature when you put your bag in the overhead compartment since you don’t have to think about storing it in a certain position.

The Allpa also comes with a rain cover to make your bag rainproof—it’s a nice bonus since many companies charge extra for a rain cover.

My Final Thoughs on The Cotopaxi Allpa 42

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

After using the this popular travel backpack for a few weeks in Europe, I’m happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the Cotopaxi Allpa 42.

It’s well-constructed, the materials are nice, it’s comfortable, it comes with a lifetime warranty, and it holds a lot of stuff. I mean, what else could you ask for?

The 42L size works well for longer 10-14+ day trips but it’s also great for shorter journeys (the Allpa does come in smaller sizes as well).

If I had to nitpick, I’d like to see Cotopaxi give the Allpa a more advanced suspension system/shoulder straps to give it a little boost in comfort but the current idderation is still pretty good. Again, it’s a minor complaint.

Otherwise, the Allps ticks all the boxes in what you want in a solid travel backpack.

A Hiker’s Dream: Cotopaxi Allpa 42 Travel Pack Comprehensive Review

BACKPACK / CAMP — General , Backpacking / Backpacks , Daypacks , Gear

hiker holding cotopaxi alpa 42 backpack

Ah, the Cotopaxi Allpa 42l. What a trusty travel companion for hiking, work and vacation travel. This bad boy can fit everything but the kitchen sink, and as someone who always tries to bring the kitchen sink, that’s saying somethin g.  In this review, I am so excited to share my detailed review of the Cotopaxi Allpa 42 travel pack, pictures of its features and design, pros and cons.

From daypacks to backpacking packs , I have tried them all. However, I recently came across the Allpa 42 travel pack and I must say, it has become my new adventure, one bag travel backpack.

Introduction to the Cotopaxi Allpa 42 bag

hiker showing mesh backpanel of backpack

This thing is a beast. It’s like a Swiss Army Knife on your back – but way cooler. The Allpa 42L features are just as impressive as its name.

Let’s start with the fact that it’s 42 liters. That’s a lot of stuff you can cram in there. And trust me, you’ll want to cram all your essentials in because this bag is durable and built to last. The weather-resistant material will keep your belongings dry even in the gnarliest of storms.

Also, there are so many compartments and pockets that you’ll feel like a kid in a candy store. And the best part? It’s comfortable to wear. And, wait for it, it’s got a suitcase-style opening, which means you don’t have to dig deep to find what you’re looking for. Genius, right?

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

Not only is it spacious enough to fit all your essentials, but it’s also compact enough to fit in those pesky overhead bins. Yes, you heard me right, no more struggling to shove your bag into that tiny space above your seat.

One of the things I love about the Cotopaxi Allpa 42l is its colorful design. The bag has a full wrap zipper opening, which makes it easy to pack and unpack. It also has four zippered compartments inside, including large, medium, and two small-size mesh compartments inside.

Detailed review of the features and design of the Cotopaxi Allpa 42l Travel Pack

The Allpa 42 bag has several features that make it stand out from other adventure backpacks in the market.

Here are some of its key features:

Comfortable to wear

The Allpa 42l travel pack has a padded back panel, adjustable hipbelt suitcase style (removable too!) and stowable shoulder straps, with load lifters, making it comfortable to wear for extended periods. The load lifter straps shorten or lengthen, allowing you to customize the fit to your body.

Versatile carrying options

The bag has multiple carrying options and comfortably carries a couple of hiking pants , hiking shirts, a light jacket, two pairs of underwear, one button-down shirt, hiking socks, and toiletries. Not to mention the multiple ways to carry this bag, backpack straps, shoulder straps tucked away, and four reinforced grab handles.

The backpack straps can be stowed away which I did when running through the airport. For reference, I’m 6’1″.

Weather-resistant

The Allpa 42 is made from weather-resistant materials, including TPU-coated 1000D polyester and ballistic nylon paneling. This makes the bag durable and able to withstand harsh weather conditions.

  • Removable hip belt

T he removable hip belt is a game-changer. It’s like having a little support system for your lower back that you can take on and off whenever you please. It’s like having a personal chiropractor with you at all times!

Okay, maybe not quite, but you get the idea. Plus, it’s super easy to remove and reattach, so you can adjust it to your liking on the go.

Ample storage space

First of all, let’s talk about the multiple mesh compartments! The zippered opening of the main compartment of the bag opens and lays flat. Inside, the internal organization has several zippered mesh compartments, a large zippered pocket, and two smaller ones, ala packing cubes style making it easy to keep your hiking essentials neatly organized.

cotopaxi 42l travel pack

Brightly colored zippers

One of the many favorite things I love about the Allpa 42 is its multi-color zippers. This detail not only adds a pop of color to the backpack but also makes it easy to identify different compartments.

Zippered Mesh Pockets

This backpack is a game changer with its spacious compartments and durable material. But what really sets it apart is the zippered mesh pockets! The backpack has a total of eight pockets, including a padded laptop pocket, a top zip pocket with organization pockets, and a side pocket for a water bottle.

To clarify, the top zip pocket and three pouches, these handy little pockets are perfect for storing your small items like GPS gavigator, keys, phone, wallet, and backpacking snacks.

No more digging around in the depths of your backpack trying to find that one thing you need. With the Cotopaxi Allpa 42L, everything has its own designated spot. Plus, the mesh material allows for easy visibility, so you won’t have to waste time rummaging around.

Quick Grab Compartments

These compartments are strategically placed for convenience, I liked that I could quickly and easily retrieve my Cotopaxi Fuego Down jacket without having to dig through the rest of my gear. It’s the little things that make a big difference, and these cool pockets are definitely a game-changer!

Padded laptop sleeve

The Allpa 42 has a laptop sleeve, next to the main compartment, which can fit laptops up to 15 inches. Cotopaxi are geniuses in using different colored zippers to identify the main compartment from the laptop compartment.

The orange color zipper opens the main compartment while the blue zippers gave me quick access to my laptop.

Lash points

One of the standout features of the Allpa 42 is the multiple lash points. These are located on the front of the backpack, and are great for attaching hiking gear , such as my favorite hiking poles , solar chargers , with carabiners, to the outside of the backpack.

This is perfect for carrying items that you need to access quickly, such as a softshell jacket, hiking poles, or a water bottle. I use the carabiner lash points to secure bulky stuff like a fleece jacket, to the outside of the backpack, which frees up space inside for other gear.

Shoulder Straps

Let’s review the Cotopaxi allpa 42 shoulder straps, shall we? These bad boys, made of mesh and foam, are like pillows for your shoulders. I mean, seriously, they are so comfortable you might forget you’re even wearing a backpack. And the best part? They’re adjustable and tuck into the back panel when I wanted to carry this as a messenger bag.

Another standout bonus of this backpack is that it comes with its own rain fly, which is a must-have for any outdoor adventurer. The rain cover is easy to access and can be quickly deployed to protect your gear from the elements.

Personal experience using the Cotopaxi Allpa 42l bag

I recently took the Cotopaxi Allpa 42l travel pack on a weekend adventure trip, and I must say, it exceeded my expectations. The bag was comfortable to wear, even when fully loaded with gear. Additionally, the adjustable straps allowed me to customize the fit to my body, making it feel like a natural extension of myself.

The clamshell opening made it easy to pack and unpack, and subdivided zippered mesh compartments allowed me to organize my clothes efficiently. Moreover, the laptop’s padded sleeve was also a lifesaver, as I was able to work on the go without worrying about damaging my laptop.

Pros and Cons of the Cotopaxi Allpa 42l Travel Pack

  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Spacious, zippered interior
  • Exterior shortcut pocket
  • Padded shoulder straps and back panel for comfortable carry
  • Lockable zippers and theft-proof webbing for security
  • Brightly colored smooth zippers
  • Expensive compared to other backpacks in the market
  • Not so many pockets

Comparison with other adventure backpacks in the market

The Allpa 42l travel pack is a premium adventure backpack, and as such, it is more expensive than other backpacks in the market. However, it is also more durable and versatile than most backpacks, making it worth the investment.

Compared to the Osprey Farpoint 40 and the Patagonia Black Hole 45L , the Cotopaxi Allpa 42l bag has more compartments, making it easier to organize your gear. It also has a quick grab items side, four reinforced grab handles, and no ugly daisy chains running down the front.

However, it is more expensive than both backpacks, which may be a drawback for budget-conscious travelers.

Conclusion and final thoughts on the Cotopaxi Allpa 42l bag

In conclusion, my review of the Cotopaxi Allpa 42 travel pack: a versatile and durable adventure backpack that is perfect for the weekend to weeklong trips. I like how comfortable it carried, the fresh design colors, rain cover, laptop sleeve and compartment for quick grab items, and plenty of storage space. Don’t forget to pack a hat for sun protection, and a water bladder if you head out hiking.

One of the best things about the Allpa 42 is its size. It’s the perfect size for carry-on luggage, making it a great option for those who like to travel light. Switched from a Duffle

I’ve carried a duffle bag for many years . After seeing a friends Cotopaxi Alfa 42, it looked like a great concept. Glad I’ve taken the leap so far…..

Love this back

I often take one to three short trips, sometimes for fun, sometimes for work. The Allpa 42L allows me to pack everything I need for an enjoyable trip. It provides quick access to the entire bag while being convenient to carry around with the backpack straps. I am even able to consolidate my laptop and other work necessities safely in the back so I only need to manage one bag on my trips. I am excited to use the bag as part of my packing strategy for a 10 day trip to Europe with my wife in a couple of weeks.

Perfect Bag for Shorter Adventure Trips

I recently purchased the Allpa 42 for a 16 day trip to 4 different countries. The bag was perfect for this journey, and definitely held up to the abuse it received as a checked bag. I really appreciated the option to carry it as a shoulder bag or a backpack, and the fact that it folds open like a suitcase. I look forward to taking it on more adventures!

Pretty great…except the laptop sleeve

It’s mostly great! Was the laptop sleeve/pocket sewn wrong? I have a 13”, 2020 MacBook Pro and the laptop will not fit in the dedicated pocket. The pocket needs to be about 0.5” longer. This is frustrating! Because the Allpa is a backpack, I am not carrying an additional, small backpack for my laptop so I need to rely on the Allpa 42L to protect the computer.

So worth it!

I deliberated this purchase for a long time-- it's not a cheap bag, and there's a lot of options out there! But it came from the recommendation of 2 friends who had also done a lot of globe trotting, and I was convinced. I am so glad I was! It's remarkably high quality, and the design is brilliant! I will never ever ever have a top load bag again, or a routine pile of my stuff that gets moved from the floor to stuffed back in my bag everytime we move. love it.

Excellent product

I am beyond pleased with its quality! The craftsmanship is top-notch, with perfect terminations that speak to its durability. Not only does it feel sturdy, but it also features well-designed compartments that are ideal for organizing my gear. Highly recommend for anyone looking for reliability and style in one package!

Love this bag. It’s the perfect bag for everything I do. From sports to camping or even hiking to traveling. Lots of compartments and pockets for everything you need.

April 15, 2024

Extremely well made

Worst thing about this bag is it's SOOO durable it INVITES you to overpack it!

April 14, 2024

Backpacker’s dream!

I recently went on a 4 day hiking trip in Hawaii and let me say, I am so glad I chose this backpack. The separating pockets on the inside made it so much easier to find specific items, especially while staying in a hostel and trying to find your items in the dark during quiet hours. I loved the durability of the outer shell and how it protected my items. The outer pocket was great for keeping a beach towel, my sunglasses and my wallet in. I used it as a carryon on the plane and had no trouble fitting it in the overhead bins.

Amazing travel bag

I bought this for a trip to Thailand. So far I've used it on every domestic trip I've taken and it's perfect. It fits under the seat on Delta, united and southwest. It packs down. There's a ton of zipper pockets to separate things out. There's so many different ways to wear it. Best pack I've ever used.

Product Description

Gear for Good Cotopaxi Logo

Allpa Travel Pack

With thousands of customers’ feedback in mind, we created the second-generation Allpa Travel Pack: a lighter and more durable version of our best-selling backpack system built for adventure travel. This pack is perfectly sized for carry-on convenience, loaded with well-designed features, and tough enough to handle years of use.

The Allpa shell is made from a blend of tough, TPU-coated 1000D polyester, with durable 840D ballistic nylon paneling. We then adopted the low-profile harness we use for our backpacking packs to create a suspension system that distributes weight and keeps you comfortable through journeys near or far. The system includes contoured shoulder straps for comfort and balance, plus a removable hip belt you can take off when you don’t need it, or for when you’re stowing the pack in tight compartments. A breathable, flexible airmesh back panel and an adjustable sternum strap create an even more comfortable carry. There’s a suitcase-style, full-wrap zipper opening on the main compartment that opens into a large, zippered mesh compartment on the right side and a subdivided zippered mesh compartment on the left. These compartments open outward for easy and organized packing, and now feature an updated zipper gusset to create dynamic compression. This compression makes it easier to zip your Allpa closed when it’s packed tight. Two zippered pockets round out the top.

Padded laptop and tablet sleeves are accessible via the exterior right-side zipper. On the left side, there’s a shortcut zipper that provides access to the main internal compartment, without having to take the pack off your back. A subdivided compartment on the top is designed with passports and other small essentials in mind.

As a security measure, all external zippers feature our theft-proof webbing sewn across the openings. A slotted back panel houses the shoulder straps, ensuring loose ends are a non-issue in overhead bins, on the bus, or in the trunk of cars. Additionally, four reinforced grab handles provide multiple carry points when the shoulder straps are tucked away, and four lash points at the top of the pack allow you to carry more gear. There’s even a high-visibility rain cover that stows into the pack.

Multi function feature call outs for the Allpa. Weight-Carry on-Rain Cover-Security zippers

18 Best Travel Backpacks, According to Frequent Flyers

By Gabrielle Porcaro

Best travel backpacks for women collage featuring six different backpacks on black and white background.

As someone who frequently travels, I've slung duffels, totes , and travel purses on my arm, but nothing compares to using the best travel backpacks. Depending on the length of your trip, a suitcase can either be too bulky or not big enough, so you'll need the vital second bag to make sure all your clothes, tech, and gear securely arrive at your destination. Plus, traveling with a backpack can be more supportive for your back, freeing up your arms and hands to pull out directions on your phone or to hold an iced coffee. Backpacks can also be surprisingly roomy, so everything you need (or want) on your trip fits as comfortably as possible. The good news is there are a wide range of excellent options to suit any and all of your needs. Below, we found the most travel-friendly options and tapped Glamour editors and some of our frequent-flier friends to share the best travel backpacks.

What to look for in a travel backpack

When shopping for luggage items like a travel backpack, the comfort and capacity of the bag is key. You want it to feel easy on the body, which means wide straps or a hip belt to distribute weight, which comes in handy if you're running to catch a plane or carrying it through a crowded subway. Bonus points if the straps are they adjustable and padded. Consider the material: Is it lightweight, soft, and made of durable material like water-resistant fabric? As for size, think about the use of the backpack. There are weekender bags and carry-on size options you can use for long weekends or smartly packed weeklong vacations and styles for short day trips, hikes, or shopping excursions.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Pack Del Día

Best Overall : Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Pack

Here's a simple, sleek backpack with plenty of built-in organization. “My twin sister and I have traveled the world together, and this bag came in particularly handy on our trip to South America when we both needed more room besides our carry-on luggage. What I loved about this piece is it's essentially a suitcase with straps. The wrap zipper fully opens up, allowing you to see and organize your goods into the compartments. Crafted in repurposed nylon, the exterior is one of a kind, and the colors made it easier to spot one another through the crowds,” says Glamour contributor Gabrielle Porcaro .

Capacity: 42 L / Waterproof : Water-resistant

  • Pros: Repurposed nylon body; suitcase layout; weight-distributing harness system
  • Cons: Can easily show dirt

SHRRADOO Extra Large 52L Travel Laptop Backpack

Best on Amazon : Shrradoo Extra Large 52L Travel Laptop Backpack

As a runner-up, consider this the Swiss Army knife of backpacks. Hidden in this compact, durable bag are 20 pockets and compartments to accommodate and organize everything from clothes to an umbrella to power cords. A practical standout feature of this travel backpack is an external USB port with set-in charging cables to charge your phone (just remember to charge your power pack before heading out on your trip). • Pros: So many pockets for organizing; USB charging port; comfortable
  • Cons: Chunky, technical look

Lululemon Everywhere Backpack 22L

Best for Commuters : Everlane the ReNew Transit Backpack

Whether you're a college commuter or in the office most days, this is an excellent option for everyday travel or work trips. It's a go-to for Condé Nast associate director of box business operations Haley Welch . “The separate laptop compartment makes organizing seamless, as does the front and upper zipper compartments, which is great for a Kindle,” she says. She likes that the chic and minimal look effortlessly mixes with every outfit, from comfy travel joggers and hoodies to a work-appropriate suit or dress.

The Best Hair Growth Vitamins, According to Dermatologists

Most Stylish : Best Tumi Voyageur Just In Case Packable Nylon Travel Backpack

For anyone looking for a dressier option for their everyday commute or regular work trips, Tumi has a gorgeous style. Don't let the sleek appearance fool you; the zipper reveals a very roomy interior but still folds flat. A two-way zipper makes it easier to grab whatever you need from the inside with a smaller front pocket as well. There’s also a very convenient add-to-a-bag sleeve to secure this nicely over your suitcase handle, making it one to use on daily and international excursions. It's so stylish it can double as a cute work bag for office days.

Capacity: 15"H x 12"W x 4 1/2"D. (Interior capacity: large) / Waterproof : Water-resistant

Snoffic Travel Backpack

Best for Organization : Snoffic Travel Backpack

If remaining organized is of the utmost importance while traveling or in everyday life, look no further than this North Face backpack. This wallet-friendly pick has a 4.6-star rating on Amazon and under $35 price tag. “I was able to pack a week's worth of summer clothes in it, which included two summer dresses," says one Amazon reviewer . Not only does this bag offer ample space and waterproof material, but it also includes two clear toiletry bags (also waterproof) to help you reduce your zip-lock baggie usage. Plus, it comes in a wide range of pretty shades.

Capacity : 40 L / Waterproof : Water-resistant

  • Pros : Nicely priced; roomy; includes two toiletry bags
  • Cons : Boxy shape

Athleta Excursion Backpack

Best for Pockets : Athleta Excursion Backpack

This pick, courtesy of Glamour commerce editor Malia Griggs , is one that can hold every little trinket or gadget you own. “I thought this backpack was going to my go-to for hiking, but it’s actually my go-to for pretty much everything. I love how sleek it is, and yet, despite its slim appearance, it manages to fit my 15-inch laptop, my secondary screen, charger, headphones, e-reader, and mouse. It has handy organizational features, like an inner key ring, zippered outer pockets for me to stash my lip gloss and phone, and not one but two mesh pockets that fit my water bottle and an umbrella. Its handles are also made of a breathable fabric—so useful when I’ve worked up a sweat while out and about.”

  • Pros :Lightweight; ripstop material resists snags and tears; mesh back panel for added support
  • Cons: Larger on top shape

Dagne Dover Dakota Medium Neoprene Backpack

Best Minimalist Design : Dagne Dover Dakota Medium Neoprene Backpack

“On my last flight I saw not one, not two, but multiple travelers with this style hanging from their backs. As someone who regularly takes Dagne Dover bags on trips, I understand the popularity. The neoprene material is strong, soft, and stretchy, which causes the bag to flex to your body and whatever you put inside. It's forgiving, allowing you to fit in and possibly overstuff everything you need for a trip. It also washes well, ensuring it will always have that chic appearance even after some wear and tear,” says Porcaro. Dagne Dover also makes excellent diaper backpacks like this parent-approved Indi Diaper Bag .

Capacity: 16 L / Waterproof : No

  • Pros: Packs a lot; machine washable
  • Cons: Neoprene is a bit heavier than other material; material creases easily

Augustnoa Classic Noa

Best for Airplane Travel : Augustnoa Classic Noa

“So many features drew me to this bag: the eco-friendly (plus water-friendly) material, smart design, and luggage sleeve—a must for any travel carry-on piece. There are ten pockets and compartments to organize essentials, something I took full advantage of when using. As an active person trying to hydrate more, I also appreciated the side pockets that securely held my water bottle (I bent over, and it didn't budge). It also includes a removable drawstring bag, something I always forget to pack for morning workouts and overnight travels,” says Porcaro.

Capacity: 21 L / Waterproof : Water-resistant

  • Pros: Pockets on straps; laptop and tablet sleeve; two water bottle holders
  • Cons: Pockets in the back and on straps are small

Ultra-comfortable to carry, it's perfect for hiking excursions, camping trips, or multi-city European backpacking adventures. Capacity: 55 L / Waterproof : Water Repellent

  • Pros: Large, carry-on size, top and side handles; removable shoulder straps
  • Cons: Rugged design

Herschel Kaslo Dayback Tech Backpack

Best for Laptop : Herschel Kaslo Dayback Tech Backpack

If you're looking for a laptop backpack , this is a top choice. Hershel backpacks are a go-to for marriage and family therapist and mom of two boys, Whitney Steller. “I have had this for almost six years, and the quality is amazing. No rips or anything and the straps are still comfortable. “The classic grade school look was also a draw and the fact that it fits perfectly under a plane seat. This style, in particular, is eco-friendly, made from post-consumer water bottles, and has a padded compartment to fit up a 15-inch laptop.

Capacity: 20 L / Waterproof : No

  • Pros: Optional strum strap to help disturbed weight; padded compartment for laptop
  • Cons: No luggage sleeve

Topo Designs YPack Backpack

Best Y-Pack : Topo Designs Y-Pack Backpack

This is an awesome option for anyone who ends up leaving a trip with more than they brought. “The adjustable Y-shaped strap can be tight and secure or loosened to allow for more room, which is the reason why this is a piece of heavy rotation for me. It always shocks me how much I can fit/shove into the main compartment yet still slide my laptop out of the back sleeve. No matter if it’s filled with a hoodie and various pouches holding makeup, power cords, and snacks; it's easy to access. I like to use the zip pocket on the top to store antibacterial wipes, hand sanitizer, headphones, and anything else I want easy access to once I arrive on the flight,” says Porcaro.

Capacity: 23.8 L / Waterproof : No

  • Pros: Drawstring closure offers more space; zip pocket on top for easy access; durable material great for travel and the outdoors
  • Cons: G-hook buckle closure can sometimes be tough

SealLine Skylake Dry Pack

Best Waterproof : SealLine Skylake Dry Pack

The beauty of this piece is that it rolls up for easy packing within a suitcase or larger travel backpack. The fact that it's created from an extremely lightweight material also ups the packability and wear factor. Jen Ator, a personal trainer, used this on her honeymoon in Thailand. “Not only was it super sturdy and waterproof, but it fits everything we needed during day trips.” She also pointed out how handy the exterior pocket was for easy access to essentials like a phone to snap a picture of her and her husband.

Capacity : 18 L / Waterproof : Yes

  • Pros: Lightweight; stowable
  • Cons: No interior pocket

Thule Crossover 2 Convertible Backpack

Best Convertible : Thule Crossover 2 Convertible Backpack

Adaptability is vital when traveling, and this Thule convertible backpack offers various ways to hold it. If you're in a tight space, de-boarding, or want to give your shoulders a break, there is a longer shoulder strap and top handle to hold. Inside the backpack, you'll find compartments that look like your favorite easy-rolling carry-on suitcase, making it easy to keep everything with you secure and organized. Another standout feature is the exterior crush-resistant SafeZone compartment that's perfect for storing sunglasses or a phone.

Capacity: 21 ¾"H x 14"W x 8"D. / Waterproof : Water Resistant

  • Pros: Crust resistant, two-way zip closure, RFID-shielded pocket;
  • Cons: Expensive

PAK Large Nylon Backpack

Best for City Travel : PAK Large Nylon Backpack

“As a backpack I recently added to my collection, I was impressed by how many features were hidden in what seemed like a pretty basic bag. First, it’s worth noting how seamlessly this slid on and off my back, making it a breeze to sit on the subway or grab my wallet to buy coffee. At first glance, I was confused about the zipper on the bottom of the front pocket, but when I realized it was a coat sling, which, as someone who runs cold and always has an extra layer, is something I will use again and again. Another made-for-me feature is an extra large pocket for water bottles since it’s a personal pet peeve when they aren’t wide enough for standard sizes. Having only worn this around the city for daily life, I appreciate that the shape and look of the pack are city-ready and more polished. When I take this on international trips, I look forward to using the hidden theft-proof compartments,” says Porcaro.

Capacity: 13.5”L x 7” W x 14” H / Waterproof : No

  • Pros: Easy access pocket in the back, Coat sling, Large side pockets
  • Cons: Not super large

Roam Continental Backpack

Best Customizable : Roam Continental Backpack

Anyone who is a fan of customization will appreciate this pick. Buyers can choose the color they want on the front, back, side, and straps to create a bag that is uniquely theirs. This is favorite of Glamour commerce editor Jenifer Calle , who has been using it for years. “It fits enough for weekend trips and vacation travel. I particularly like that the side zippers fit my Owala water bottle and there are plenty of zipper and pockets to hold my wallet, keys, chargers, lip balms, and more” says Glamour’s Calle.

Capacity : 26 L / Waterproof : Water Repellent

  • Pros : Customizable; 100-day trial period; soft material; luggage sleeve
  • Cons : Expensive

The 12 Best Backpacks for Traveling in 2024

More and more travelers are trading in their oversized “wheely” suitcases for the comfort and convenience of backpacks.

However, not all backpacks are created equal. They come in a dizzying array of sizes, shapes, and styles, from minimalistic bags for city day-trippers to heavy-duty versions for backcountry hiking.

So, which backpack is best for you, your budget, and your  unique travel  needs? Keep reading to discover 12 of the best backpacks for traveling this year.

1. Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bag 55L

The Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bag 55L is another option with outstanding durability and versatility, making it a top choice for adventurers.

Notable features include rugged weather-resistant construction, reinforced with TPU-film laminate, and durable water-repellent (DWR) coating. This ensures it can withstand even the harshest weather conditions.

Its large 55-liter capacity offers ample space for gear without allowing you to overpack, while multiple carrying options – backpack straps and haul handles – enhance convenience. Additionally, it’s made from recycled materials, which is perfect for the  eco-friendly traveler .

The bag’s hefty price tag might deter budget-conscious buyers; some find the lack of interior organization pockets a drawback. Overall, it’s a high-quality, eco-friendly option for outdoor enthusiasts from another trustworthy brand in the space.

2. Aer Travel Pack 3

The Aer Travel Pack 3 backpack is a popular choice for travel enthusiasts and those with  traveling jobs , offering a blend of exceptional features.

Its best attributes include a sleek minimalist design crafted from durable 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon. The 33-liter capacity offers plenty of space for essentials, with thoughtful pockets and compartments for all your gadgets.

Comfortable and adjustable straps enhance its wearability, while a dedicated shoe compartment helps keep things clean and tidy.

Downsides include its bulkiness when fully packed, which might be inconvenient for some, and premium build quality with a similarly premium price point. Nevertheless, the Aer Travel Pack 3 is a stylish, functional companion for short-term urban travel or anyone seeking a sleek carry-on.

3. Osprey Aether

The Osprey Aether backpack offers exceptional comfort for hikers and travelers alike.

Its adjustable harness and hip belt make it ideal for long treks – or long security lines at the airport – and its internal frame provides excellent load distribution, reducing strain on the back.

Multiple compartments and pockets aid in organization, and the Aether also includes a hydration sleeve for those carrying a water bladder. This backpack is known for its durability with high-quality materials and craftsmanship, and Osprey’s All Mighty Guarantee covers it.

At almost five pounds, its weight may be a drawback for some, as it’s not the lightest option on the list. It’s also relatively expensive compared to other brands. Still, the Aether remains a top choice for avid hikers and travelers seeking a reliable backpack that’s both comfortable and durable.

4. REI Co-op Flash 55 Backpack

The REI Co-op Flash 55 backpack is a versatile and affordable option for budget-conscious travelers.

Standout features include its lightweight design – just three pounds – making it comfortable for extended hikes, the 55-liter capacity that provides ample storage, and numerous pockets for keeping everything organized.

Adjustable shoulder straps and a ventilated back panel offer comfort during long treks. It’s also reasonably priced compared to many competitor options.

Unsurprisingly, for a budget-friendlier backpack, its durability may not match premium brands. Some users also find the frame is less supportive with heavy loads. Despite these drawbacks, the REI Co-op Flash 55 shines as an affordable, lightweight pack that deserves its place on this list of the best  backpacks for travel .

5. Fjällräven Abisko Hike Foldsack

The Fjällräven Abisko Hike Foldsack is a multipurpose, compact daypack for outdoor enthusiasts.

Noteworthy features include its water-resistant G-1000 Eco fabric construction, which ensures longevity and durability. The 15-liter capacity is ideal for day hikes and short urban adventures, with a roll-top closure for easy access and expandability. It’s also super lightweight, making it easier to carry, and the removable foam frame adds support.

However, the smaller size of the foldsack may limit its use for longer trips. Some users may find the minimalist design lacks extra pockets for organization.

Overall, the Fjällräven Abisko Hike Foldsack is a stylish, highly functional daypack for a wide range of  adventures with your friends .

6. Hyperlite Mountain Gear 2400 Southwest Pack

The Hyperlite Mountain Gear 2400 Southwest Pack is a high-performance ultralight backpack designed for serious adventurers.

Its premier features include a waterproof Dyneema Composite Fabric construction. As the name suggests, this makes it highly durable and weather-resistant while remaining lightweight.

With a 40-liter capacity, this backpack is spacious enough for multi-day trips and includes a roll-top closure for easy access. The minimalistic design and robust materials ensure longevity, while adjustable straps enhance comfort on the road.

The premium price tag may deter budget-conscious buyers, and some may miss additional organizational pockets. Nevertheless, this is another of the best backpacks for travelers seeking something lightweight, durable, and suitable for challenging outdoor expeditions.

7. Cotopaxi Allpa 42L

The highly-rated Cotopaxi Allpa 42L backpack stands out with its versatility and stylish, sustainable design.

Noteworthy features include its recycled polyester fabric with a TPU coating for weather resistance, making it suitable for various outdoor activities. The 42-liter capacity offers a useful amount of space for longer trips. And it boasts a clever selection of compartments, including a padded laptop sleeve.

Its harness system and padded waist belt ensure a pleasant carrying experience. The unique, vibrant color schemes make it easy to spot on the luggage carousel.

Downsides? Some travelers may find it somewhat heavy for a carry-on bag with a relatively high price point. All things considered, the Cotopaxi Allpa 42L impresses with its eco-conscious construction and functional design.

8. Gregory Baltoro 75

The Gregory Baltoro 75 backpack is a rugged, top-tier choice for serious backpacking enthusiasts.

Its best features include an adjustable Response A3 suspension system, which offers unparalleled comfort and load support. Its cavernous 75-liter capacity accommodates extended trips and heavy gear, complemented by numerous pockets and access points for efficient organization.

The backpack’s durability and robust materials ensure longevity, while its integrated rain cover adds weather protection.

Its weight and size may be overkill for some hikers/travelers, and it comes with a heavy price tag. Despite these potential drawbacks, the Gregory Baltoro 75 is a comfortable, feature-rich  backpack for anyone tackling extended trips  or tough outdoor expeditions.

9. Tortuga Travel Backpack 30L

The Tortuga Travel Backpack 30L is a versatile carry-on backpack for urban explorers.

Noteworthy features include a sleek, minimalist design that adheres to airline size restrictions. The 30-liter capacity offers ample space for essentials, with thoughtful organization pockets for tech gadgets and accessories.

It’s comfortable to wear with padded shoulder straps and a ventilated back panel. The backpack’s durable materials ensure longevity, while the hideaway shoulder straps add versatility.

However, the smaller size might not suit longer trips, and the lack of a hip belt could limit comfort for some users with heavier loads. The Tortuga Travel Backpack 30L is a compact, stylish choice for city adventures. Tip: travelers seeking slightly more space could consider the 40-liter version.

10. Osprey Transporter Global Carry-On Travel Backpack

The Osprey Transporter Global Carry-On Travel Backpack is another versatile travel companion with many impressive features.

Its most noteworthy attributes include a durable TPU-coated nylon construction, which offers good weather resistance and longevity. Similarly, the 36-liter capacity adheres to global carry-on size regulations, making it perfect for hassle-free air travel.

The backpack’s comfortable harness system includes a padded hip belt and adjustable shoulder straps for a customized fit. It also offers excellent organization with multiple pockets and a padded laptop sleeve.

The lack of wheels might be a drawback for some travelers, and, like most Osprey packs, it isn’t cheap. This would be a robust, attractive, well-organized, and spacious carry-on for frequent flyers.

11. ULA Circuit Backpack

The ULA Circuit backpack is a favorite among thru-hikers and ultralight backpackers.

Its standout features include a spacious 68-liter capacity, ideal for extended wilderness trips. It also has a comfortable, adjustable suspension system to handle heavy loads.

The rugged Cordura fabric ensures durability, while the numerous external and internal pockets facilitate organization. It has a custom-fit option, allowing buyers to tailor the pack to their needs.

On the downside, its three-pound weight may be considered “heavy” in the ultralight community. Some users also find the lack of frame uncomfortable with heavy loads. Nevertheless, the ULA Circuit is a hardwearing, customizable backpack for anyone serious about long-distance treks.

12. Kelty Redwing Tactical Backpack

The Kelty Redwing Tactile backpack is affordable and versatile for outdoor enthusiasts.

Notable features include a rugged 500D Kodra fabric construction, offering both durability and water resistance. Its 45-liter capacity provides ample space for gear, complete with multiple pockets and organization options.

The U-shaped zipper provides easy access to the main compartment, while the padded shoulder straps and ventilated back panel enhance comfort during extended use.

However, some users may find the tactical aesthetics less appealing for urban settings. And the absence of a dedicated laptop compartment could be another drawback for city travelers. Yet its popularity as a well-built, robust pack is undeniable.

The Best Backpacks for Traveling: Which Will You Choose?

Ultimately, picking the best backpacks for you will depend on where you’re going, what you’re doing, and how long you’ll be there.

As we’ve seen, there are high-quality packs for day-trippers, weekend wanders, long-term travelers, and everybody in between. One of the options on this list is sure to be the perfect traveling backpack for you.

Trans-Siberian: Visiting Tomsk – a Winter Wonderland

March 14, 2015 by Silvia 15 Comments

My favorite stop along the Trans-Siberian route isn’t actually on the Trans-Siberian train line. We had to switch trains in the middle of the night to go up to Tomsk, something that might have seemed like a hassle had Tomsk not turned out to be my favorite city not only in Siberia, but in all of Russia.

In fact visiting Tomsk probably ended up being one of the highlights of my entire six month journey from Asia to Europe, and I think this Tomsk travel blog will show you just why.

At over 400 years old, Tomsk is one of the oldest cities in Siberia, which means that instead of only uniform Soviet architecture, the city is also full of traditional “gingerbread” style wooden houses.

I really loved that Tomsk only has 500,000 inhabitants and is such an easily walkable city. With several universities, Tomsk is also full of students, which gives the city a great energy. But what I most loved about Tomsk was that Aleksey lives there!

I met Aleksey in Israel through Couchsurfing , so when I realized that we’d be passing nearby his hometown of Tomsk I insisted that we make a detour to visit him. Because Aleksey is the coolest.

We were also really lucky with the weather in Tomsk. It snowed the day we arrived (bizarrely that was our first day in Siberia without perfectly clear skies) and then the sun came out to make all the freshly fallen snow sparkle! I mean, it was really cold – I think around -25°C – but I didn’t really mind because it felt so perfectly Siberian!

Tomsk in winter is just so magical, and while I definitely plan to visit Tomsk in the summer as well, I’m really glad my first trip here was a frosty one.

And then something super exciting happened! Remember when Dan and I found the ice slides in Ulan-Ude but didn’t have time to try them out? It was pretty devastating (I might have toned down my disappointment when I wrote about it , because I like to play it super cool on this blog). But then we found some in Tomsk! Imagine our squeals.

Also, are these not the prettiest ice sculptures you ever did see? I guess it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Siberians are so skilled with ice.

Aleksey also invited us out to his friend’s birthday celebration, which taught me some things about Russian culture. Like when Dan ordered a shot of vodka for the birthday girl and she looked at it in horror, shaking her head saying she simply  couldn’t drink vodka. And then everyone else refused to drink it as well, until finally one of the guys took it, but not without a big shudder. Way to defy stereotypes, Russians!

We ended the night at someone’s apartment talking about movies, politics, and poetry. Well, the Russians talked about poetry, and stared in disbelief when Dan and I admitted that neither of us has read any Pushkin. Sorry, Russia!

Now, thanks to Tomsk, Dan and I are already planning our next Russian adventure – hopefully in the summertime (though sadly not this summer). I just think Tomsk would be magical in the summer. Well really, I think it’s probably magical anytime of year. But Russians keep on telling us to visit Russian in the summer, so I think we definitely will need to return here then.

Where to stay in Tomsk

We stayed with Aleksey, but since I know a lot of you aren’t so into Couchsurfing I made sure to ask him for some other accommodation in Tomsk as well.

Best luxury hotels Tomsk

If you want a luxury hotel in Tomsk, stay at the Magistrat Hotel in the city center. It’s in a grand building and very luxurious, while still being quite good value. Aleksey said that this is the place to stay when you come to Tomsk! Check current rates and availability here

Best mid-range hotels Tomsk

If you’re on a smaller budget, then you should definitely stay at Abazhur Hotel, located in an beautiful old Russian wooden house in the center of town. This hotel has tons of character, lovely clean rooms, and is amazing value. Check current rates and availability here

Best Tomsk hostels

Alesksey recommended two hostels:

The Eco Hostel is supposedly the best hostel in Tomsk. It’s right by the river, the staff is amazing, and the beds have curtains for added privacy. They also have all female or male dorms, and private rooms.  Check current rates and availability here

Nice Hostel is also very, well, nice. They also have beds with curtains, a vibrant and clean design, and the all male/female dorms are the same price as mixed dorms (and slightly cheaper than Eco Hostel). Aleksey said that personal he would choose Eco Hostel, but if you’re on a tiny budget then Nice Hostel is also good. Check current rates and availability here

Wow the ice sculptures and slides look incredible. How was your backside after all the sliding? Can’t imagine the cold… brrrr let’s just say I’m a ‘like it hot’ kinda girl and I much prefer the 35 degrees we’re having today in Jeddah. On the other hand we can’t get ice sculptures here 🙁

Silvia says

March 15, 2015 at 2:35 am

Haha it was pretty cold on the slides – most people slid down them on their feet instead of bottom. But whoa, I’d definitely prefer it over 35 degrees!!

March 14, 2015 at 2:58 am

So funny to me as all the Russians I know (ESPECIALLY the ones from Tomsk) are always like… eh… Tomsk. Guess that makes sense as they were all the people who escaped to Moscow from Siberia!

March 15, 2015 at 2:36 am

That is awesome, because people we talked to in Tomsk were all really negative about Moscow. It’s good to know everyone really appreciates their homes at least! (But seriously, Tomsk is amaaazing.)

Bloody awesome photos, really makes one want to visit there just to see these wonderful things

I’m still daydreaming about Tomsk – definitely worth a visit!

Yay, I’m glad you included the map to track where you’ve been. Because sadly, my geography skills are not up to snuff for that part of the world. Anyway, I love this city already! How amazing that it has such old (and cute) buildings. And very cool that you were able to meet up with your old friend there. There’s no better way to get to a know a city than through someone who lives there. Ahaha, I love that everyone shuttered at the thought of taking a shot of vodka. How disappointing! But the fact that the night ended discussing politics and poetry. That seems so perfectly Russian 🙂

March 15, 2015 at 2:38 am

Haha honestly I need the map for myself too, to track exactly where in Russia I went. That country is huge!! I was pretty surprised at the hate towards vodka, but you’re right, the discussions of politics and poetry definitely proved that they were in fact Russian. I love how artsy and romantic so many Russians seem to be!

Rachel says

March 15, 2015 at 6:25 am

Woah, that slide looks awesome! And how pretty is Tomsk! I wish I’d given us more time to see more of Russia when we took the train across, it would have been great to detour off it to see places like this, ah well: just have to return!

March 19, 2015 at 4:15 am

There are so many places in Russia that I didn’t get a chance to see – it’s just too huge! Definitely worth another trip 🙂

March 16, 2015 at 6:37 pm

Nice! Our favorite places when we travel always end up being where we have the best stories of connecting with people. Next time we are in Siberia, we’ll have to check out Tomsk. If you are in Russia in the summer you might want to check out Petrozavodsk — it’s pretty close to St Petersburg, and has even more surreal white nights. And lots and lots of history (I suppose not unusual for that part of the country)

March 19, 2015 at 4:20 am

Thanks for the tip! I think I’ll need longer than just 30 days (which I get on the visa) to see Russia in summer – so many beautiful places!

Silvia, your winter game is so impressive.

Oh you know I take winter SUPER seriously!

December 17, 2018 at 8:30 am

I’m in the middle of planning my Trans-Siberian adventure so this post is really useful – thanks! One question: what time of year did you visit Tomsk? It looks so beautiful in the snow!

How Siberia’s Tomsk ‘weaved’ houses of wooden lace (PHOTOS)

Wooden "laces".

Wooden "laces".

Tomsk, one of the oldest cities in Siberia, was founded in 1604. A century and a half ago, it was a major hub for transit and trade. Merchants, architects, scientists and doctors came here en masse. The city is well preserved with the old layout of the streets and wooden estates of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

How many houses have been preserved?

"A merchant's house" in Tomsk.

Historically, Tomsk was built up with wooden buildings, since there was always plenty of trees in Siberia. At all times, local craftsmen skillfully transformed popular styles into wooden architecture. Neo-Gothic, classicism, art Nouveau - all of these architectural styles can be seen in Tomsk made of wood.

Even the wealthy locals preferred to order mansions made of wood, rather than stone. Their houses are decorated with carved gables, platbands, high spires and turrets, which is why they are dubbed “lacy”.

In addition, they stand out for their bright colors, particularly yellow, red, pink and blue. Today, in the city with a little over 550,000 people, there still remain about 2,100 wooden houses built before the Soviet era. Out of these, 701 are under the protection of the state.

The house with firebirds

One of the most outstanding buildings in Tomsk is the so-called ‘House with the Firebirds’. The firebird is a magical creature from Russian fairy tales and its image is often used in folk arts and crafts. Firebirds decorate the roof of the house. This mansion on Krasnoarmeyskaya Street was built in 1903 and belonged to the merchant Leontius Zhelyabo. He ordered its construction for his daughter as a wedding gift. Several firebirds from this house can be found in the local museum of wooden architecture. The house is now divided into apartments and several families live there.

The Emerald Mansion

This house on Belinskogo Street looks like a fairy tale castle. It was built in 1904 by architect Stanislav Khomich for his family, as well as for rental purposes. Carved balconies, bay windows and bright emerald colors - it resembles a real castle.

The house was declared a monument of architecture in 1974. Now, it houses the Tomsk Region Licensing Department.

The house with a marquee

Another unusual wooden house by Stanislav Khomich. “The house with a marquee” on Krasnoarmeyskaya Street in 1902 was built for the merchant George Golovanov. Spires, marquees, towers - all decorated with carved wooden elements. Since 1995, it has been home to the Russian-German House and is open to the public.

The house with a spire

A bit of wooden neo-Gothic can be seen on Kuznetsova Street. Dr. Valerian Vasilkov and his family lived in this house which was constructed in 1908. At that time, doctors worked not only in institutions (Vasilkov, for example, was a doctor on the railroad), but also in private practices. The first floor was intended for treating patients, while the second floor was used as living quarters. After the revolution of 1917, the house became an apartment building.

The house in the Tatar Sloboda

Tatars from various regions of Russia settled around the Tatarskaya Street in Tomsk. This 1902 mansion belonged to Moscow Tatar Akhmedulla Akhmetov. There is a stone basement and the upper floors are made of wood. The windows are decorated with beautiful moldings. In 2007, the house was restored and its massive gate was reinstalled. Today, it is a residential building.
