Airlie Beach weather: What is the best time to visit the Whitsundays?

The Airlie Beach weather is highly seasonal. For rainfall, sunshine and lack of stingers, the best month in the Whitsundays is September.

Australia’s climate is by no means uniform. The best months to visit the southern states don’t necessarily match up with ideal conditions in the north. The sunniest month in Sydney can similar to Melbourne , but rainy in Queensland, and unbearably hot at Uluru .

9 memory-making Airlie Beach experiences to add to your visit

  • Whitehaven Beach day cruise – with plenty of snorkelling thrown in.
  • Glass bottom boat tour – see coral and marine life without getting wet.
  • Heart Reef flight – see the islands and Great Barrier Reef from above before flying over Australia’s famous heart-shaped island.
  • Proserpine River crocodile safari – see the big crocs from a boat.
  • Whitsundays sunset cruise – with free snacks and sparkling wine.
  • Sailing on the Camira – glide around the Whitsunday Islands under sail.
  • Whizz around the islands on a guided jetski tour .
  • Waterfall explorer day tour – with swimming in Hinterland rock pools.
  • Enjoy high speed thrills on a jet boat ride .

The Whitsunday Islands (officially, the Cumberland Islands ) are famous for island stays, white sand beaches and multi-day yacht cruises. They are in the tropical north of Australia. Accessed from Airlie Beach in Queensland , the Whitsundays stay pretty warm all year round.

Airlie Beach brings Whitsunday Islands sailing and snorkelling cruises , coral and marine life viewing from a glass-bottom boat and day cruises to the staggering white sands of Whitehaven Beach. To explore the full range of Airlie Beach tours and experiences, investigate here . For Airlie Beach accommodation bargains, look here .

The key difference in the Airlie Beach weather is not hot or cold – it’s wet or dry.

Airlie Beach weather : temperatures and rainfall

The average minimum temperature in the Whitsundays doesn’t vary all that much. It’s 25°C in January and February, but 18°C in June, July and August . Average maximum temperatures are 31°C in November, December and January, but get as low as 23°C in July.

Rainfall is where things differ greatly. In September an average of 26.4mm falls on Hamilton Island , the main holiday hub of the Whitsundays. In February, however, it’s 326.1mm.

Which Whitsundays cruise should I choose?

cruise whitsunday weather

  • For those with limited time: Whitehaven Beach half day tour .
  • For the highlights reel: Whitehaven Beach and Hamilton Island day trip .
  • To see the reef two ways: High speed Whitsundays cruise plus scenic reef flight combo .
  • For romance, sparkling wine and sunset under sail: Multi-beach and reef Lady Enid cruise .
  • To see several islands: Sailing and snorkelling adventure .
  • For an overnight sailing adventure: Matador two day yacht cruise .

The rain is very heavy in January and March, too. That’s going to ruin a kayaking tour , drown out a swim in the Airlie Beach Lagoon and make a cruise pretty hard work. It’s still 167.4mm in April, which is usually billed as the start of the ‘dry season’. If you want under 100mm of rainfall a month, and fewer than 10 rainy days per month, aim for between June and November.

Stinger season in the Whitsundays

Another factor to consider with the Whitsundays weather is “stinger season”. This is when the waters around the Whitsundays have more than their fair share of “stingers”. Or, as they’re more accurately known, “potentially fatal jellyfish”.

These nasties, including the box jellyfish and Irukandji, float in on ocean currents. They’re also why all the cruise operators hand out full body wet suits. They’re not about keeping warm – they’re about keeping seriously nasty jellyfish stings off the body.

Such suits are more or less essential between October and May. They’re recommended between June and September, too, but the danger isn’t nearly as high when the Airlie Beach weather isn’t as humid.

So that’s another tick in September’s favour, to go along with slightly higher temperatures than June, July and August. September also gets the most clear days and the fewest rainy days. That’s handy for for seeing wildlife on a Proserpine crocodile cruise , too.

White sand beach in the Whitsundays, Queensland

Given that September is also shoulder season for the southern states, it also provides a happy medium for a cross-Australian itinerary. It provides decent weather for cruising in the Whitsundays,  enjoying Melbourne’s street art and climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge .

Cruise the Whitsundays – the definitive where, when and how?

May 8, 2017 by Joscelyn O'Keefe

Article by – Petrea McCarthy, Mysailing.com

A trip to the Whitsundays instead of winter at home, the cruise of a lifetime, or part of a grander plan?

Whatever your motivation for sailing north this year, now is the time to prepare. The beauty of cruising is that whether it is your first or fortieth time up the coast, there is always something new to discover. Whether you have been to the Whitsundays before, or it is your first time, this is for you.

I am going to talk about planning and the Queensland section of the trip; getting out of Moreton Bay and over the Wide Bay bar; day-sailing up the coast and then about some of the best anchorages in the Whitsundays.

The first thing is to decide whether you will actually have time to get all the way to the Whitsundays, or would be better aiming for another beautiful area, the Capricorn Coast for instance.

Allow enough time to enjoy the trip

To ensure you enjoy your cruise to the Whitsundays, consider these different options. Allow enough time to day-sail there, spend some time in the area and sail home again. Or, make a delivery-style trip up and back, spending most of your time in the Whitsundays. This could involve different crews for each part of the trip and allow your family maximum time at the destination. A nice option if your kids are in school.

Maybe stage the boat up the coast before your holiday starts, then bring it home in stages afterwards.

The simplest option could be to charter a bareboat. Two weeks would give you time to take in most of the iconic spots, although obviously, more time is better. It may seem expensive, but if you tally the cost of taking your own boat north, you may be surprised.

Finally let us not forget trailer sailers have perhaps the best option, just drive up and launch at Airlie Beach. There are two good public ramps, one straight into Muddy Bay, the other within Coral Sea Marina Resort. Both offer reasonably secure parking. TSs also have the option of utilising one of the many caravan parks around Airlie as a base.

How much time do I need?

For a daysailing trip, you will not want to sail more than about eight hours a day, so multiply your average speed by eight to get the length of each hop. A twelve metre monohull might average six to seven knots, so a reasonable day’s run would be 50 to 60 nautical miles. The average cruising cat won’t be much faster.

Add in the time taken to leave the marina or overnight anchorage and the approach when you arrive and you have a very full day.

In 50 to 60nm hops the Queensland section of the trip is: Gold Coast to Brisbane area; Brisbane to Mooloolaba; Mooloolaba to the bar, up the Sandy Strait; Sandy Strait to Burnett Heads; Burnett Heads to Pancake Creek; and so on. Add in a few rest or exploration days and Brisbane to Gladstone will take more than a week.

That is without breakdowns, bad weather or stopping for crew changes.

So you are going to need three or four weeks just to get to the Whitsundays, unless you’re prepared to do a few overnighters and miss a lot of great anchorages along the coast.

When to go, when to come home

Going north is easy: anytime after the cyclone season is fine. Getting back down the coast requires intelligent timing. Cruisers do not sail to windward if they can help it so, if time is limited, work backwards from when the northerlies start to kick in, about October/November.

You will need to be aware of the annual military closure of the Shoalwater Bay area. Operation Talisman Sabre is a joint US/Australian training exercise held over three weeks around July/August. It usually closes anchorages from Port Clinton to Cape Townshend to private traffic.

Schedules, or not

Some people like to preplan each day. But that can lead to frustration if the weather does not cooperate, someone feels a bit off, or any number of other reasons including just wanting to spend another day somewhere. It may be better to set milestones, in the sense that by the end of each week you need to be approximately at a certain point. Then you can judge whether you are ahead of, or behind, schedule and either adjust the pace accordingly or expand the timeframe a little.

This flexibility will let you enjoy sailing a lot more. If the wind is light, sailing is pleasant but you may not make the scheduled anchorage unless you motor. Just stopping a little short, if an anchorage is available, lets you get through the day without resorting to the engine.

Seasickness fears

If you have never been outside sheltered waters you may not know whether seasickness will be an issue. A trial trip would be an excellent way to find out. The first day of your trip north is not the time to discover you get sick. Thank goodness these days seasickness sufferers have a range of options, from traditional drugs that make you drowsy, to ginger tablets and wristbands that press on your nausea point. Try them before you go, both to ensure they are effective and that you are not adversely affected.

How much navigation gear do you need?

Setting up the boat is outside the scope of this article. There is a wealth of opinion available on the necessary gear for a coastal trip, but I would like to point out that you can still cruise the coast without any electronics or instrumentation, it is just easier to have them if you can afford it.

I cruised for a long time with paper charts and a hand-held GPS and found them perfectly satisfactory. While it is debatable whether paper charts are a legal requirement, I feel they are an essential back up because they will still work even if all your electrics fail.

The one book I would definitely have on board is Alan Lucas’s ‘Cruising the Coral Coast’. You will find it useful for the whole trip, right up to Cape York if you are going that far. Noel Patrick’s ‘Curtis Coast’ zooms in on the section from Bundaberg to Mackay. Colfelt’s ‘100 magic miles’ is the Whitsunday bible. I would take them all, but on a very tight budget I would go for Lucas and Colfelt.

If you are buying ‘100 magic miles’ make sure you get the latest edition released late 2014. However, older versions of all these books will still be perfectly serviceable if you already have one.

Leaving but not leaving

If you have exhausted yourself with preparations, the best first day is just to leave home and anchor somewhere nearby. Or even leave home and spend the night on board in the marina.

Do not fight the weather, if it is not right for departure day just sail around locally for a few days. Be kind to yourself and your crew and let them settle in before tackling that first passage.

Getting out of Moreton Bay

Try to pick a good ebb tide to take you up along Bribie Island, at least to Caloundra. And yes, I would go out the north west channel, the NE gets you out of the bay sooner but can be fraught.

Buoys are often not where the channel actually is, who needs that kind of stress?

As the main shipping entry, the NW channel is accurately marked. There can be a parade of ships to avoid but hey, we only draw a couple of metres so we do not need to stick right in the channel. Sailing up the edge, or just outside the channel, is much less nerve-racking.

Entering Mooloolaba

Before leaving Brisbane you will need the latest information on the Mooloolah River entrance because it can be shallow.

Ideally the tide will be well on the rise by the time you get there, so you will have plenty of depth and a tide to carry you up the river. Although there are marinas in Mooloolaba, you can still anchor upstream of them if you like. Just check your chart for the anchorage limits and make sure you show an anchor light.

You do have a decent (legal) anchor light, don’t you? Garden lights do not qualify even if they are bright in the evening, by morning they can be pretty dim.

Next step is the Wide Bay bar. You can avoid it by sailing around the top of Fraser Island but that is a long and tiring passage, which denies access to the Sandy Strait and Burnett Heads region.

Realistically, if it is too rough to cross the bar it will be worse around Sandy Cape. If you are not into long passages, forget it. For those used to overnight passages, or in a hurry, it is of course a viable option.

Sandy Strait

Perhaps the second-most feared stretch of water for southern yachties.

Sandy Strait is a shallow, winding channel behind Fraser Island. If you are worried about grounding, travel on a rising tide so you will float off any skinny bits.

It is extremely well beaconed, the bottom is only sand and mud and you should not come to any harm even if you do go aground.

Like any such waterway the tides meet in the middle, so about halfway through the Strait you will find the tide reverses from rising north to rising to the south. A little planning and you can use this to your advantage by arriving at the shallow central bit at high tide, then carry the new ebb north.

There are some fabulous anchorages behind Fraser and of course access to the Great Sandy Island National Park. Amongst other wildlife, you will probably see some of Fraser’s dingoes prowling along the beach. Recognised as one of the purest strains of dingo left in Australia, their interaction with visitors has become a problem in some areas. Authorities urge visitors not to feed them, leave food scraps around or interact with them in any way. Keep any eye on your kids, walk in groups and photograph them from afar. Remember they are wild animals, not pet dogs.

If you have dogs aboard, they are not allowed ashore on Fraser. The whole island is a national park.

Sailing up the coast

The rest of the trip north is just a series of day hops with a few personal choices of route. Call at Gladstone and sail up the Narrows, or sail outside to the Keppels? Stop at Rosslyn Bay or continue without reprovisioning? How much time to spend at each place? It is all up to you. Let Lucas and Patrick be your guides. Both have a massive amount of experience in these waters and can answer most of your questions.

The major attractions north from the Fraser Island area are the Bunker Group of islands and reefs, the Keppel Islands and the Percy Islands.

Lady Musgrave, the main anchorage in the Bunkers, is well worth a visit in quiet weather. Depending on your boat speed leave from Burnett Heads, 1770 or even Pancake Creek, in time for a mid-afternoon arrival. This is a true coral cay with a beautiful islet to explore and a reasonably secure anchorage. It can be magic and it can be pretty rough in windy weather. If you are there when a blow is forecast, move somewhere more sheltered rather than riding it out. You may not be in danger by staying, but it will be uncomfortable.

Great Keppel Island has a range of anchorages suitable for winds from northerly round to southeast. All of them are animated in windy weather. In general, the closer to shore you can anchor the less rolly it will be. With gently shelving depths, this is a place to work the rule of twelfths, even to the extent of moving closer to shore towards neap tides for a quieter anchorage.

Middle Percy, one of the Northumberland Islands roughly southeast of Mackay, is an island of history and controversy. From pioneering times to the present day, it has always been a favourite stop for yachties, despite its often-lively anchorage in West Bay.

Site of the famed A-frame yachties hangout, there is a heap of yachting memorabilia on display, walking tracks and, of course, a visit to the island’s current caretakers to contemplate.Shoal draft boats can enter the lagoon and dry out in perfect comfort while keelboat sisters roll in West Bay.

From the Percy area the choice is to call at Mackay and reprovision for an extended stay in the southern Whitsunday area, or continue to the Whitsundays via the Cumberland Group. (Editor’s Note: If you want flavoursome, chemical-free fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish then call at the Farmers Market in Mackay which is held every Wednesday.)

Whitsundays

The Whitsundays are within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP). Most islands are national parks and much of the sea has restrictions on what you can do.

Free zoning maps are available from marine outlets all along the coast, or you can download them from the GBRMP Authority website.

An unfortunate result of all this regulation is that the Whitsundays are not pet-friendly. Domestic animals are not allowed ashore in most places and that is even below high water mark. If you have the option to leave Fido at home, please do so or be prepared to be creative in exercising.

Watch out for: charter boats. Bareboat skippers are mostly inexperienced and both bareboats and the passengers on crewed charter boats can be very noisy. The great thing is that bareboats must be anchored by 1600 and stay put for the night. They also announce their intentions on the morning radio sked, so you can get an idea of their probable movements. If you are uncomfortable with the proximity of a charter boat you can ask them to move but really, you are much better to do it yourself. Coming into anchor around 1600, after they have all parked for the night, helps to solve the problem. What charter boat? Bareboats are easy to pick because most of them tow large rigid inflatable dinghies. The exceptions are the big catamarans, which use davits. Note, nearly all bareboats have the name of the charter company emblazoned on the mainsail cover. The crewed charter boats are usually identifiable by the numbers of passengers on board.

Weather information is listed in ‘100 magic miles’. One of the easiest ways to get weather forecasts is by listening to a charter company sked. Morning and evening, the operators advise charterers of their best options considering the expected weather. Listen out and you might discover something new.

With dozens to choose from it would take years to see every anchorage the Whitsundays offers. These are my must-see picks: Lindeman Island: not such a great anchorage but worth it for the walks and views. Boat Port on the NW side is the best anchorage. Watch out for strong currents off S end, water can be murky.

Thomas Island : pretty, offers comparative solitude. Several beautiful beaches can be rolly in developed trade-wind conditions. Watch out for fringing reef SW of the island in the entrance to the SE anchorage, Calder Rock to the north.

Hamilton Island : natural and artificial attractions. Can be very handy with airport, full-service shipyard and travel lift, plus ferries to anywhere. Caters for varied interests and is spectacularly beautiful. Watch out for current across entrance to harbour.

Whitehaven/Hill Inle t: iconic destination, which means it is busy. Shoal draft boats can escape into the perfect shelter of Hill Inlet, others go over to Chalkies on Haslewood Island. Watch out for sandflies.

Nara Inlet: beautiful, sheltered, popular. Has cave paintings and a waterfall after rain. Watch out for strong currents and reef near entrance.

Border Island/Cateran Bay : great snorkelling. Can be rolly in strong winds. It has some public moorings. Snorkelling anywhere is best on neaps and in light weather. Watch out for stonefish, no-take zoning.

Reef Group: fabulous, scenic, isolated, no bareboats! Only in light, settled weather, neap tides. Waterfall into Hardy lagoon. Not for the inexperienced or nervous. Watch out for tidal influences, currents between reefs.

Cid Harbour: excellent shelter. Walks for any fitness level. Easy access, roomy anchorage. Watch out if it is raining at Cid, may be fine elsewhere.

South Molle: excellent bushwalks on national park tracks. Private resort off limits to yachties but moorings may be available. Watch out for wind gusts on NE point.

Airlie Beach : service centre for the Whitsundays. Excellent holding but can be rolly in developed weather. All yacht facilities available, at Coral Sea Marina Resort, which is just a short walk to the township of Airlie Beach where you can re-provision and enjoy a meal out.

That’s all for now. Sailing the Queensland coast is a worthwhile stand-alone cruise, but the Whitsundays are the jewel for most people.

Do not be in too much of a hurry to get north, but plan your trip around when you want to be home. Allow plenty of time to avoid travelling in adverse weather.

Be wary, but not afraid of the Wide Bay Bar. Be wary, but not afraid of running aground in shallows. Be flexible, choose anchorages according to the weather forecast rather than a rigid plan. Relax and enjoy.

The Whitsundays caters for all tastes, from nature lovers to party animals, budget cruising to mega yachts, children to retired folks.

Whether the Whitsundays is your destination or are just passing through, there is so much variety it would take a lifetime to see it all. Make a start on it.

Small Ship Cruises in Whitsunday Islands

Famed for its huge stretches of white powder sand beaches and azure waters on the island of Whitsundays, cruises can take you to some of Australia 's most beautiful barrier reefs and colossal beaches. This is a much-loved part of the Great Barrier Reef for sailing, thanks to sheltered bays and warm, balmy nights. The island’s coast is lined with barrier reefs topped with white sand, allowing visitors to explore the reefs by snorkeling from their small cruise ship and sunbathing on the spits and beaches. Bright corals are plentiful and covered with thousands of colorful fishes attracting turtles and huge Maori wrasse. Above the waterline, and if you can tear yourself away from the beaches, bushwalks offer panoramic views of the island and its coast and dramatic waterfalls and forests full of fascinating wildlife.

On board the small ship cruise, you can while away sunbathing, enjoying meals and drinks with other guests, and taking in the scenery. Onboard barbeques and delicious picnics of fresh local Australian cuisine can be enjoyed on the boat or on the beaches and spits of sand. Whales and dolphins can also be spotted from a small ship cruise around the Whitsundays, and many bottlenose dolphins might even follow the boat and enjoy playing in the bow waves. Cruises in Whitsundays are famous for star-watching, beautiful clear skies, and sparse artificial light. You can enjoy a spectacular show and maybe even sleep on deck overnight.

Best Whitsundays cruises and areas to visit

The huge white sand beach of Whitehaven Beach in Tongue Bay is a perfect place to anchor on a small ship cruise. The area is beautiful and sheltered, with a huge beach area and several bushwalks to take you to viewpoints in the forested areas. Turtles are a common sight here, and snorkeling is very popular; many other watersports are available in Tongue Bay, including kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. It is worth noting that the beaches at Tongue Bay are only accessible at low tide, and it is best to discuss timings with the crew of your cruise boat.

Langford Island

This long strip of beach and land may be small, but great things come in small packages. The long white strip of sand jutting out from the islet is the stuff of dreams. Also, it is the ultimate spot to take that sun-soaked desert island photo to make everyone back home green with envy. The island is surrounded by a beautiful reef, a perfect location to snorkel and enjoy the warm, crystal-clear waters. The only thing to watch here is the tide; your small ship cruise crew will let you know when you need to return to the boat so as not to get stranded.

Butterfly and Luncheon Bay

These two bays are the ideal anchorage on a small ship cruise of the Whitsundays, thanks to their sheltered position and beautiful wildlife. Snorkellers will find giant wrasse, reef fish, and colorful corals. On land, take a bushwalk and enjoy the bird and butterfly species in this extraordinary place. These bays are also slightly quieter than others due to the limited number of moorings.

Best time to cruise in Whitsundays

With year-round warm weather and perfect sailing conditions, the best time to cruise Whitsundays is anytime. The hottest time of the year is from December to March, when the weather is warm and humid, and the water is the perfect swimming temperature. This wetter period never dampers the fun; the rain is usually relatively short-lived. The winter months are drier and have the added attraction of being whale season. If you visit Whitsundays from June to August, you can see the migrating humpback whales passing through with their calves. Many people find September one of the best times to visit Whitsundays for the weather conditions alone. The days are drier, but the water is still almost as warm as in the winter months.

How to get to Whitsundays

Reaching Whitsundays can be done by air from most major Australian airports, including Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Cairns. There are two airports near Whitsundays: the Great Barrier Reef Airport on Hamilton Island and Whitsunday Coast Airport. Most small ship cruises of Whitsundays depart from Airlie Beach, which is only half an hour’s drive from Whitsunday Coast Airport in Proserpine on the mainland. There are frequent shuttle buses between the airport and Airlie Beach.

Whitsundays Cruise Tips

  • Many small ship cruises around Whitsundays are sailing boats that offer the chance to try your hand at sailing. If you want to learn something on your holiday, ask the crew, and they will allow you to help them.
  • The Australian way of life is very laid-back, which means lots of fun and no need to dress up. You can leave your high fashion holiday wear at home. Stick with T-shirts and maybe a sweater, just in case. Bring comfortable shoes for bush walks, preferably light but with covered toes.
  • A camera is a must-have; this is one of the world’s most scenic places. It might also be worthwhile to bring a small waterproof camera if you plan on snorkeling, kayaking, or paddleboarding.
  • The sun shines bright in Whitsundays, even more so because of the reflection of white beaches and expanses of water. A good shady hat, polarised sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreens are a must, especially if you are looking to do watersports and bushwalking.
  • Whitsundays is a trendy area, attracting tourists from Australia and worldwide. It is highly advisable to book well in advance, especially if you have your heart set on a particular itinerary or small cruise boat.

Best time to visit Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands

Whilst most of Australia is rugged up for winter, the Whitsundays enjoys some of our finest weather!  Locals and visitors are swimming in the ocean, sailing the seas and basking in the sun.

Whitsunday Escape is perfectly placed within the tropics and are blessed with average daytime temperatures from 23 o  to 30 o C all year round.

Best Time to Charter

Hiring a boat and sailing the Whitsunday Islands is a holiday adventure to be enjoyed any time of the year. All year round, the Whitsundays enjoys tropical weather and moderate winds.

To make the most of your bareboat holiday in the Whitsundays, there are certain seasons or months which may be better for meeting your holiday needs.

April to May is our shoulder season where the humidity and heat lessens. A wonderful time for an Easter getaway. Days are often bright and clear and temperatures pleasant.

June to August is why the Whitsundays is known as a sailing “Mecca”. Sailors and visitors come from afar come to enjoy both Airlie Beach Race Week and the Hamilton Island Race Week and the daily on land festivities. This time of year is also perfect for spotting the majestic humpback whales up close, as they migrate through the Whitsundays to birth their young.

September and October is peak season in the Whitsundays. The skies are typically clear, light winds to set your sails and the sun is shining bright.

November to December is a perfect time to beat the school holiday visitors. Often we will experience a change in the winds to be more northerly. Enjoy the warm weather and explore anchorages that are not usually accessible during our South Easterly trade winds.

January to March is the ‘rainy’ season and a great time to secure a bargain holiday! Of course during these months we get some very nice weather. Expect it to be hot and humid with regular showers but very enjoyable on the water, amongst the sea breezes. Regular showers also creates gushing waterfalls and swimming holes to be explored on the islands.

Question: How do I get to the Whitsundays?

The Queensland coast is spectacularly long – thousands of kilometres of beaches, towns, cities and rainforests. Halfway between the Gold Coast and Cape York in central Queensland, the Whitsundays are right in the middle of it. Getting here is a breeze, by air, road or rail.

The Whitsundays are serviced by two domestic airports: Whitsunday Coast Airport on the mainland at Proserpine, and Hamilton Island Airport.

Direct domestic flights with Qantas, Virgin Australia, Tigerair and Jetstar arrive from Australia’s east-coast hubs: an hour from Cairns, 90 minutes from Brisbane, 2.5 hours from Sydney and 3 hours from Melbourne.

Whitsunday Coast Airport is 38kms inland from Airlie Beach. Hire a car at the airport or pre-book a shuttle into Airlie Beach. If you’re arriving via Hamilton Island, our island resort services connect you with the airport and Airlie Beach.

Queensland Rail operates the ‘Spirit of Queensland’ train between Brisbane and Cairns, stopping at Proserpine along the way.

It’s a 14-hour journey from Brisbane and 9.5 hours from Cairns, with trains departing both cities five times weekly.

‘RailBus’ coaches run between Proserpine Train Station and Airlie Beach, connecting with each arrival and departure.

Queensland’s main long-distance coach operators are Greyhound Australia and Premier Motor Service.

Both companies run daily services to Airlie Beach from Brisbane (19 hours) and Cairns (10.5 hours), and major towns in between.

The Bruce Hwy (A1) runs roughly parallel to the Queensland coast between Brisbane and Cairns. The turnoff to Airlie Beach is 1km north of Proserpine; from here it’s a 24km, 20-minute drive into town.

Airlie Beach is a 12.5-hour drive from Brisbane (1100km), 7.5 hours from Cairns (625km), three hours from Townsville (275km) and two hours from Mackay (150km).

Question: What is the best time of year to visit the Whitsundays?

The Whitsundays enjoys a tropical climate of hot summers, warm winters and bright spring and autumn days. Average daily temperatures range from around 22 to 23 degrees celsius in the winter months of June and July, and up to 29 to 30 degrees celsius in December and January during the height of summer. Water temperatures remain a welcoming 25 degrees celsius most of the year round.

The tropical wet season occurs during January to March when days can be steamy, and the summer heat is often broken by tropical showers.

Marine stingers may be present in the waters year round, with the higher risk season during October – May.  During this period, jellyfish are prevalent in the waters around the mainland, islands and have occasionally been found out on the reef.  It is recommended that our guests wear stinger suits which are provided free of charge on our Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach tours.

Scuba diving is available (at an additional cost) for guests travelling on the Great Barrier Reef Full Day Adventure. We provide our guests with the opportunity to dive, whether certified or introductory, guided by one of Cruise Whitsundays’ qualified instructors.

Divers cannot fly for 24 hours after diving and the company accepts no liability for medical conditions experienced as a result of flying after diving. All diving is operated by Reef Safari Pty Ltd and booking to dive with them deems acceptance of the terms and conditions as published on their website  www.reefsafari.com .

Question: Are your vessels and products wheelchair accessible?

Most of our Resort Connection vessels are wheelchair friendly, however for day tours & semi-submarine tours at Hardy Reef vessels are accessible by stairs, making them inaccessible for guests who are totally wheelchair dependent. For semi-mobile wheelchair users travelling to Whitehaven Beach, we have a beach wheelchair available. Please inform our reservations team when booking if you would like to use this chair while at the beach.

Question: How can I travel eco-friendly?

Home to an explosion of colourful marine life, the Whitsundays’ natural environment is truly special. Offshore you’ll find six of the world’s seven species of turtle, along with delicate coral reefs and migrating humpback whales, who frequent the area from June to October.

Thirty-two of the islands are protected as the Whitsunday Islands National Park – including Whitsunday, Hook, Hamilton and Hayman – but it remains our responsibility to reduce human impact as much as possible.

Leave shells and plants where you find them: the only thing you should take with you is your rubbish.

Don’t rush to flush and take short showers: fresh water is precious on the islands.

Never touch or stand on coral, even if you are wearing flippers.

Never touch marine life (fish, turtles etc) – human bacteria can make them sick.

For more on Cruise Whitsundays’ approach to eco-tourism, visit our Environmental Commitment page .

Question: Can I fly a drone on any of your tours?

Drones are generally not permitted on our tours, experiences or products due to operational and safety concerns.  However, if you’d like to discuss the possibility of using a drone on your tour or experience, please contact the reservations team at [email protected] .

Question: Do tours still operate in the rain?

All tours will still operate in wet conditions.  We strongly suggest checking the weather forecast http://www.bom.gov.au/qld/forecasts/mackay-coast.shtml 48 hours prior to your departure date to check conditions.

Question: What parking is available from your terminal?

Parking is available at our Port of Airlie terminal please be advised spaces are limited.

To avoid disappointment we do recommend taking advantage of our reasonably priced Bus Pick Up Service available for all-day tours, alternatively Port of Airlie is within walking distance of most accommodations in Airlie Beach.

If extending your stay on the Islands there are alternative Parking facilities available ( https://issuu.com/cruisewhit/docs/m032_-_airlie_beach_parking ) or you could take advantage of Whitsunday Parking, a Private Valet company.

We did the half-day Whitehaven morning trip with Cruise Whitsundays. Everything went super smooth and it was a great trip. We left from Hamilton Island - make sure to check-in when you arrive. Since we were a half-day trip the full-day people got on the boat first, but there were still plenty of seats for us. We were given morning tea (coffee, tea, biscuits, muffins and fruit) and also stinger suits since it is jellyfish season. On the beach there are beach toys (sandcastle stuff, cricket, volleyball, etc), as well as drinking water. There is also a photographer that will go around and take great photos of you and your party. We took full advantage of the photographer and she was really patient and happy to get a great photo of the full family/individual/kids/etc. All the photos cost $80 digitally or cheaper if you only select some. Getting on the boat and traveling back was just as easy. The half-day trip was great for the kids, a couple hours on the beach was enough to exhaust them (and us). If you want to do any exploring you would need to do a full-day, but it's enough for seeing and having fun at the beach. I would do it again!

We did half day afternoon tour.. boat was nice and clean and well maintained.. service was very unfriendly .. hardly any "guidance" .. basically a ferry service from Airlie to Hamilton through daydream Islands. Then change boat to whitehaven Beach.. served very substandard sausage sizzle .. no drinks at all (not even water) and had to buy beer .. no activities on the beach .. just spend 2 hours doing nothing .. on return free beer but they took down the credit card numbers .. dont know why .. was punctual .. was an ok experience but once is enough

We took a cruise and stayed the night out on the Great Barrier Reef back in mid/late November. Andy and his crew were amazing. Andy, made everyone feel at home and over 24 hours become one of the best parts of our Australian Trip. The service was great and food was amazing with fresh seafood and coffee in the AM. Waking up for a 5:30am sunrise on the barrier reef was something I'll never forget. Kids had a great time snorkeling and learning about the reef while my wife and I could enjoy time together and relax. Thank you Andy and crew.

How incredible it has been to have had the experience of going on a tour with this company. I went on the lilac catamaran called the Camira. We headed out around 8 am and set sail. There was tea, coffee and snacks upon departure and they also provided so fruit shortly after. We headed to whitsunday Island first, which was beautiful. Then we went snorkeling at a different island. There was also a delicious lunch provided with several meats and salads to choose from. Too bad the weather was not very good, but the staff kept our spirits up and we had a grand time!

We did the great barrier reef day trip from Airlie Beach. It's a 3 hour boat ride out there. The vessel has 3 levels, with both indoor & ourdoor seating. The last hour of the ride is in open water & gets choppy. They advise to take dramamine beforehand. We took some before the ride out & again before the ride back & we were fine. Most of the day there is a coffee/water/tea station open, with cookies. Then mid morning the crew puts out fruit. A cold lunch buffet was kept out over a 3 hour time period while at the reef. Then in the afternoon another snack is put out. There is also a cash bar with soda, alcohol, & additional snacks. They had plenty of gluten free & vegetarian options. You get 4 hours at the reef. The ship docks with a pontoon that is always out there next to the reef. You can go freely between both. They provide stinger suits (for iellyfish) & all snorkelimg equipment. The pontoon also has an underwater viewing area. We chose to do a 10 minute helicopter tour over the area- it cost $102 US per person. It was awesome. We had a great time & it was a good 10 hour day! We paid about $180 US per person

I can't say enough about Cruise Whitsundays. Friendly, knowledgeable, and experienced crew take you on amazing excursions throughout the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef! Their charter boats vary in size, and offer indoor or outdoor seating, plus drinks, snacks, and amazing views of the Whitsunday Islands. Excursions last anywhere from 1/2 day to overnight (Reef Sleep!) depending on what you want to see / experience while you're there. We went to Whitehaven Beach (WOW) and the Hill Inlet one day, which included snorkeling, beach activities, lunch, drinks (tea, sodas, alcoholic bevy's, etc.), and hiking! We also went to the Great Barrier Reef (double WOW!!). It took about an hour and a half to two hour boat ride to the reef. Part of this was over open water and got pretty choppy in the afternoon on the way back! Once there, we were able to snorkel for several hours, had a delicious buffet lunch, and did a glass bottom boat tour of the edge of the Reef. Don't miss these amazing excursions while you're staying in the Whitsundays! I will definitely be back! :)

We did two Whitsundays cruises. Both were amazing! They thought of everything to make the day as memorable and safe as possible. We did the full day at Whitehaven and Hill Inlet and it was an incredible day. First they took us to Hill Inlet where we went on a bush hike and swim. Our guide, Jacob, was so knowledgable and lovely. Then they took us to Whitehaven beach for a barbecue lunch. Then we went snorkeling and paddle boating and swimming. We also did the day at the Great Barrier Reef. This was an absolutely incredible day. We scuba dived for the first time. They took a lot of care to ensure we felt safe and saw amazing marine life. Then we went snorkeling around the corral reef. They also have an underwater observatory and a glass bottom submarine to observe the marine life. It's an experience I will never forget!

Must admit, I wish we'd done further research about which tour operator to use to snorkel The Great Barrier Reef. Although the tour staff was friendly, knowledgeable, all equipment was spotlessly clean, the food was First Class, etc etc, we were disenchanted that we took a two hour boat ride from Hamilton Island out to Hardy Reef and snorkeled in an area where most of the coral was bleached white, dead and crumbling. We were very disappointed. For all the money we spent, we expected to see live and vibrant coral. One minor detail which almost prevented me from going into the water. The wire steps and platform that we had to walk on to get into the water, was extremely sharp and prickly. So much so that I almost couldn't walk on it. It was EXTREMELY PAINFUL on my feet.

Photo of Geoff D.

The family and I took Fantasea's Great Barrier Reef day trip from Hamilton Island. It was a perfect intro to both the reef and snorkeling generally for our kids aged 5, 7 and 9. I've been on a number of snorkeling trips over the years, including another one to the Outer Reef from Port Douglas, and would rate this one by far the best for families. In particular, the destination pontoon makes it all work... way more spacious, stable and accessible than trips where you try to snorkel/dive directly from the boat. They also had plenty of life jackets, wetsuits and floatables available, all making it much less intimidating for the kids. Once you're ready to get out of the water, the groper-viewing hole, underwater viewing chamber and semi-submersible (think the submarine ride from Disneyland) offer plenty to see/do the remainder of the day. Even the food wasn't bad. Last but not least, the staff was very easy going and helpful. We'd bought tickets for an earlier day, but when it turned out to be lousy weather that day, they encouraged us to just switch our booking for the next day (and then keep doing that until the weather cleared or until we ran out of days).

About Cruise Whitsundays

To get to the most picturesque islands you cannot avoid taking a ferry. Some destinations are served by larger and more stable car ferries, others are connected by smaller but faster high speedboats or catamarans. If you easily get seasick, avoid travelling by catamaran which rides the waves when the sea is rough – rather opt for a high speed boat as it cuts the water what results in a less rock-and-rolling trip. Also, taking a seat on an upper open-air deck may help weather high waves. Cruise Whitsundays offers online tickets for ferry trips – it is not even necessary to pop in at their office to buy one.

What are the Main Stations of Cruise Whitsundays?

Cruise Whitsundays ferries travel to a number of popular destinations. The list of the stations serviced by Cruise Whitsundays includes but is not limited to:

  • Hamilton Island Marina
  • Daydream Island
  • Hamilton Island Airport
  • Shute Harbour
  • Port of Airlie

What are the Most Popular Routes of Cruise Whitsundays?

Here are some of the most popular piers covered by Cruise Whitsundays’s schedule:

  • Airlie Beach - Hamilton Island

What are the Ferry Classes & Prices of Cruise Whitsundays?

The rule of thumb is the faster the boat, the higher the price is. Before booking, decide whether you need an express service or slower options are also acceptable. The rates for the latter are much more affordable. Yet the difference in the travel time may be really huge, so always check how long the ferry trip takes before you book your ticket. Also, the availability of some classes can be limited and always requires advanced booking. Always remember to check the pier your boat leaves from and docks at to choose the most convenient one for your onward trip and read other travellers' reviews.

Pros & Cons of Ferry Travel

Pros of ferry travel.

  • To take a ship is the only way to reach some of the islands. And in many cases – some of the most beautiful, postcard and paradise islands you have always wished to go!
  • Different ticket classes are often available so you will be able to choose the fare, level of comfort, travel time, and schedule which suits you best.
  • Book online to save time – on many routes, booking in advance is an absolute must. In the first place, it concerns longer trips, trips on busy periods like national holidays, long weekends or high season. It is a good idea to book at least several days prior to your travel date if your route is served by a limited number of trips per day, too.
  • Travelling by ferry is fun. It is always nice to have a look at the places you have visited from another angle – well, in this case – from water. Almost any destination looks terrific from water and you will have a great opportunity to take brilliant pictures.

Cons of Ferry Travel

  • Getting seasick is the major concern for ferry travellers. The longer is the trip and the rougher the sea is, the more chances to feel your stomach protesting. To make your trip more enjoyable, take the medicine half an hour before your trip and follow our recommendations from above.
  • Ferry trips are highly weather dependent. It means that on rainy days departures can be delayed or even cancelled. It is not an uncommon thing to close the ferry connections even with bigger islands during stormy weather for several days. It means you should keep this possibility in mind if your ferry trip connects with a flight – chances to get to the mainland later than expected can be high during certain periods.

The expedition ship carries just 264 guests as well as a 26-strong Expedition Team

Following a warning from the Met Office for strong winds across the South West on Monday evening, the ultra-luxury expedition cruise ship Seabourn Venture makes an unscheduled stop at Fowey on Tuesday, April 16.

The current run of bad weather prompted a surprise visit to Cornwall from a huge, luxury cruise ship today (Tuesday, April 16). Following a warning from the Met Office for strong winds across the South West on Monday evening, the ultra-luxury expedition cruise ship Seabourn Venture made an unscheduled stop at Fowey .

Half-way through a 26-day cruise from Malaga to Edinburgh, the 557ft expedition ship was due to be visiting the Isles of Scilly , having departed from London on Sunday. However, a spokesperson from the cruise operator confirmed that " weather -related issues" had forced a change of plan.

Launched in July 2022, the ultra-luxury cruise ship offers capacity for just 264 guests, despite its size. The Polar Class vessel, equipped with two submarines, is capable of visiting Antarctica and the Arctic, and is joined by a 26-strong Expedition Team on every voyage to lead passengers into adventure.

For this unscheduled stop at Fowey, the 24 Zodiac boats were put to good use, ferrying the passengers into Fowey for a Cornish adventure while the ship remained anchored outside the harbour entrance. The two custom-built submarines that are carried on the expedition ship were not expected to be used during this short stay in Cornwall .

Although the first scheduled cruise ship was not expected in Fowey until the end of April, the surprise visit by Seabourn Venture is now the second of the year for the small town. Fowey Harbour Commissioners confirmed that the poor weather had prompted another unscheduled cruise ship visit yesterday, when the MS Maud opted for the safety of the harbour rather than battling strong winds on the Welsh coast.

Vacationing woman killed when shuttle bus crashes into group of people near cruise port

HONOLULU ( KHNL/KGMB/ Gray News) - A woman on vacation was killed when a shuttle bus dropping passengers off near a cruise port in Hawaii crashed into a group of people.

Dianna Cricelli, 68, from Pocahontas, Illinois, was taken to a hospital in critical condition where she later died, according to police traffic investigators.

She was reportedly with family celebrating her 46th wedding anniversary. Her husband, 66-year-old Frank Cricelli, was also seriously injured in the crash.

“The family is mourning the loss of Dianna. They are asking for privacy during this difficult time,” Frank Cricelli said in a message relayed by the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii.

Three others, including a 67-year-old woman, a 55-year-old woman, and a 58-year-old man, were also seriously injured in the crash, according to officials.

Additionally, a man in his 70s was taken to the hospital in stable condition while six other adults, ranging in age from their 40s to their 70s, suffered minor injuries and declined transport.

The crash happened at about 10:20 a.m. Friday in a private parking lot near a cruise ship port in Honolulu. Honolulu police reported the 57-year-old driver of the shuttle bus was dropping passengers off and picking others up when he was notified that the vehicle was moving forward.

According to police, the driver jumped into the driver’s seat in order to stop the bus but pressed the gas pedal instead of the brakes.

“Somebody screamed, and then I looked over and the bus hit into the crowd,” Janet Lightfoot, an ER nurse from Florida, said.

Lightfoot and her mother had been on a cruise and just disembarked Friday morning to go shopping. They were waiting for a shuttle when they saw a bus with a Hilo Hatties logo heading toward a crowd of people.

“It just kept going and my daughter yells out, ‘There’s nobody driving the bus.’ And then poof, it hits the wall,” Linda Reck, who was vacationing from Florida, said.

Police said the bus crashed into a group of people, pinning several against concrete barriers.

“It just kept going until it hit the wall there. Big, cement block was pushed out and the bus hit into the wall,” Lightfoot said. “I ran over and kind of started triaging people and trying to help.”

Bystanders said the chaotic scene unfolded in seconds.

“It was shocking,” witness Mike Frost said.

Lightfoot said she’s accustomed to seeing traumatic injuries, but that witnessing this crash felt different.

“We’re on vacation. The husband of one of the family members was there and just sad,” she said.

The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii said those who were seriously injured were all from Illinois and that they are being offered assistance.

Carnival Miracle issued a statement following the crash, reporting that nine of the people hit by the shuttle bus were guests on their cruise.

“Members of the Carnival Care Team are assisting the guests,” the statement said in part. “Our thoughts are with the guests affected and their loved ones.”

They reported the ship was on a 15-day trip that departed from Long Beach, California on April 6.

Honolulu police said it’s unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

World leaders urge Israel not to retaliate for the Iranian drone and missile attack

World leaders are urging Israel not to retaliate after Iran launched an attack involving hundreds of drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron told the BBC on Monday the U.K. does not support a retaliatory strike, while French President Emmanuel Macron said Paris will try to “convince Israel that we must not respond by escalating.”

The Iranian attack on Saturday, less than two weeks after a suspected Israeli strike in Syria that  killed two Iranian generals  in an Iranian consular building, marked the first time Iran has launched a direct military assault on Israel, despite decades of enmity dating back to the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.

An Israeli military spokesman said that 99% of the drones and missiles launched by Iran were intercepted.

Israel and Iran have been on a collision course throughout Israel’s six-month  war against Hamas militants  in the Gaza Strip. The war erupted after Hamas and Islamic Jihad, two militant groups backed by Iran, carried out a devastating cross-border attack on Oct. 7 that killed 1,200 people in Israel and kidnapped 250 others.

An Israeli offensive in Gaza has caused widespread devastation and killed over 33,700 people, according to local health officials.
