Why Did My 12-Volt Power Outlet Stop Working?

2115834349 1429219624728 jpg

By Rick Popely

CARS.COM —  If you have a 12-volt power outlet that suddenly decided it didn’t want to work, the first thing to check is whether the phone charger or whatever 12-volt accessory you’re plugging into the outlet isn’t the problem. Try plugging it into a different power outlet to see make sure it’s working, or plug a different 12-volt device into the suspect socket.

(If the electrical accessory itself is at fault, see if it has its own fuse, which is sometimes incorporated into the plug.)

Related: Why is the Battery Light On?

If you determine that what you’re plugging in isn’t the problem, check to see if the fuse for the car’s power outlet has blown. A dead fuse for that circuit is the most likely cause, either because of age or because what was previously plugged in was faulty or drew too much current.

If you don’t know where the fuse is located, consult your owner’s manual to find the location first of the fuse panel, then of the individual fuse for the cigarette lighter or 12-volt power port in question. You may need a fuse puller to check it, though some vehicle manufacturers thoughtfully include one in the fuse panel. If the fuse is bad, replace it with one of the same amperage.

Even if the fuse shows no signs of being blown (one such sign might be a black spot), you might want to try a different fuse of the same amperage to make sure.

If the fuse is good, you have more work to do. Check whether power is getting to the outlet by testing it with a voltmeter or circuit tester. If the voltmeter shows power is reaching the outlet, the outlet itself is probably damaged from repeated use or simple misuse. Though chargers and other plugs are supposed to be of uniform size, some may be bigger or smaller than others. Once widened by a too-fat plug, the socket may no longer maintain contact with a different plug.

If no power is reaching the receptacle, the problem lies elsewhere, such as in a loose or disconnected wire or worn insulation around the socket. The wires may be out of sight or hard to reach under the dashboard, but see how far you can trace them to try to find the problem.

If you can’t find what’s wrong or are unable to fix it, professional help is your next step.

Console Power Outlet Not Working

  • Add to quote

Hello, the 12vDC Power Outlet in the center console next to the shifter is not working. I tried plugging in a few different items but nothing worked. But the power outler in the armrest compartment and the outlet in the back of the console for the rear seats still work. Are these power outlets all on their own fuses? If so, which one is for the power outlet next to the shifter? thanks for the help.

My console outlet only works when the key is on. I think the other ones work all the time. Jay

MoparMike10

This, but also, that outlet was the only one on my truck that wouldn't work unless I pushed the cigarette lighter plug-in to the side. I fixed it by removing it from the truck and bending the contacts inside to have more tension. Might check the connections inside if it does not work when the truck is turned on.

You've probably got a blown fuse. according my owner's manual, it appears that each of the three power outlets are on separate fuses. Everything is controlled by the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), located in the engine compartment, near the battery MF31 20amp Power Outlet #1 (battery) MF48 20amp Power Outlet #2 (ign r/acc) MF49 20amp Power Outlet #3 (ign r/acc / battery) I would check MF49 to see if the fuse is blown. I'm reading the ignition/ ACC or Battery tag to mean that you can change the position of the use, causing the power outlet to either be on with the key, or to be hot all the time. This was an option in my wife's Magnum, so it may be an option in our trucks too, though I haven't gone out to look yet. good luck, and let us know what you find Exco

FYI for those following the tread. I checked all 3 fuses and the MF48 20amp Power Outlet #2 fuse was the culprit. Its was burnt up. I am gonna head to the store this weekend to get a new one. thanks for all your guys help!

glad that you got it figured out. I would try and figure out what caused it to blow... did you plug something in to it that over loaded it? did you plug something in that had some sort of short in it? was it that way when you got the truck so you have no clue? do you currently have a short? If you replace the fuse, and it immediately blows again, I'd get it checked out, as that indicates that you've got a short somewhere, and that the fuse did what it was designed to do good luck Exco

This also happened to me, no power on the center console outlet. The dealer ended up replacing the socket and some wiring under warranty, turns out the wire was pinched in the console and ended up being chaffed off.

Mine just stopped working and I checked and the fuses were good. Now what?

Just had the same problem with the console outlet. M48 was the culprit. Also a good time to re-seat the rest of the fuses. Many had to be snapped down. I guess that's what 150,000 Km will do.

I have a similar issue.. Fuse M48 keeps popping. The dealer told me I'm overloading the circuit with my small air compressor that is rated at 180 watts / 15 amps. The fuse is 20 amp. The manual states M48 is IGN R / Accessory power outlet #2. IGN sounds like it refers to ignition, but what is the R? Run? I'm trying to find out what all else runs on that circuit that is causing the fuse to blow. If anyone has this information, please let me know! I'm dealing with Dodge customer service and it hasn't been a very pleasant experience. Thanks! Jeff

My power outlet stopped working this morning. I use it all the time to power my dash cam/GPS although my truck has a built-in device. The fuse was blown so it will be an easy fix. TKS

Cigarette Lighter 12v Power Not working

  • Add to quote

2005 Magnum SXT My Cigarette Lighter 12v Power Outlet went out on me the other day. The user manual states that there is a self correcting Circuit breaker that will reset when the overlodd is removed. the Outlet has not reset and I don't know where to look for the circuit breaker in either the front or rear power blocks. Any advice??

I don't recall a circuit breaker for this but check the rear fuse box for the I believe it is number 18 fuse it is the one that sits in the socket that looks like it is too big. You can actually change that plug from constant on to switched by relocating the fuse in that location.

Thanks. One of the other challenges I face is that I can't determine the numbering scheme of the fuses. The black panel doesn't seem to be numbered.

That was the one. Thanks. I just have to get the mini blade fuse. I only had the bigger blade fuse.

Power outlets not working

Bobscharger

I bought a 2014 Pursuit a couple of months ago from NCSHP, and love it. I just discovered my first problem with it and need some help. The power outlets in the center console are not working. I checked all the connections and fuses, but the manual says the outlet fuse is #12, but there is no #12 on the diagrahm in the manual. I did find there are (3) twenty amp fuses in spare slots, I assume for police equipment. Those spare slots are 22, 36, and 59. I went ahead and checked all the other fuses, and they checked good. Might anyone know where to check next? Since there is no 12 shown, which number is actually for the outlets? Love the forum, and looking forward to learning a lot about these Mopars...

13Daytona1625

If it was used as an actual police vehicle. Try to trace the wires and see if it’s cut somewhere

Thanks for the reply. If I could find which fuse it is supposed to go to, that would be much easier to do. As is, I might just have to check all the fuse locations...

Did you check both Front and Trunk power dist? Power outlets are fed from trunk.

I did, and the diagram in the owner manual indicates it is #12 in the rear, but there is no #12 in the rear fuse box.

/\ take a pic of the rear fuse block so we can see and hopefully help you out

djalbin

Thanks for the diagram with the numbers that are missing on the one from my owners manual (attached). It is missing 12,13,and 14. The fuse block is missing number 12 fuse, now that I know where to look. I'll pick up a fuse and see if that fixes my problem. Thanks for the suggestions and help.

Put a 20A fuse in #12 slot and all is working fine...Thanks for the help!

You're welcome. I'm glad the cheap & easy fix worked. .

12v Outlet not Working

  • Add to quote

The 12V outlet in my center console stopped working (and the front one in my cigarette tray isn't connected anymore since I installed my Kenwood). The first thing that I checked was the fuse. I replaced the fuse for both outlets (20 YELLOW mini fuse) and it's still not working. What else could be wrong??? :4-dontknow:

The fuse for the console outlet is cavity 9, and the fuse for the cigarette socket is cavity 18. Both 20amp yellow mini fuse. If the fuse in #9 is fine, then I would say possibly defective socket. Are you able to get a voltmeter probe inside the socket, or better yet, check to make sure there is voltage on the wire at the rear of the socket - may require some console dis-assembly. I have heard of socket shorts before, replacing the fuse doesn't work because it blows as fast as you put it in. I go back to defective socket theory.

azoth99

Keep us updated when you get this sorted out. please

OK stupid answer, but worth checking out. Did you remove the console and make sure the wiring harness that goes to the inside socket. It may have come loose during everything and possibly it's not pushed all the way in. I doubt it's the problem, but worth a shot. I painted my interior and lets just say, forgot to plug the center console one back in, found out when I tried to test my XM radio after and got nothing.

Not a stupid answer at all. As good as mine. It's hard to diagnose a problem like that via the forum. Much simpler if I was there with a voltmeter and electronic tracer in hand.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm off today, so I'll check it with a multimeter. If that doesn't work, I guess that I'll check to make sure the pin connector is still plugged into the harness (but I doubt that b/c I've never removed the center console). I'll keep you guys posted.

Noyjitat

Bumping this long old thread to ask what the problem was? Im having a hard time tracking my issue down.. and the local garage are probably going to to take advantage of me.

djalbin

You may not get a response from the O.P. since it was 12 years ago. Start by checking the fuses in the rear fuse box (trunk). .

I just got a 2016 Journey and I have a question regarding the 12V Always On Power Outlet. Let say I keep a phone charging overnight will it completely drain my battery ?  I have never dealt with a  12V Always On Power Outlet, so I am unaware of how it works.

I wouldn't keep your phone charging overnight in your vehicle. Bring it inside and use a wall charger. The outlet always being on will not run your battery  down unless you have something plugged into it drawing power.

Just bought a 2018 Dodge Journey and found out that the center console 12V outlets do not work. I plugged in multiple chargers to see if it was a particular charger, but had the same issue. The outlet under the radio console works fine, its just the 12V outlets inside the console and on the back. Anyone know what could be the problem.

3.0 EcoDiesel. That 12V outlet is only on with the ignition, the one on the back of the console is changeable from ignition to constant on. I would check to see if that outlet cam unplugged. There is two screws (in front under rubber tray) that hold the top of the center console down, also careful pry up the trim ring.
