Somnath also known as Prabhas Patan is located at a distance of 230 kilometers from Dwarka and you just need to drive along the coastal highway that leads to the holy city. Thus a Dwarka-Somnath roadtrip is in the offing. However your drive from Dwarka to Somnath is not just traveling the distance, but it is full of surprises as you come across some of the iconic places you might have dreamed to visit in your lifetime.

So, your drive is going to be full of excitement that you will remember for a long time. The drive along the Arabian sea is quite pleasant with the gentle sea breeze and the inviting sea waves just at a stone throw distance. I have travelled along East Coast Road (ECR) from Chennai to Pondy along the Bay of Bengal coast and found it more visually satisfying due to the greenery. However the Gujarat coast is bereft of such greenery as the region experiences tropical climate. Thus vegetation is very thin in coastal Gujarat. However, hundreds of windmills along the highway are an amazing sight and are rarely found elsewhere.

Harsiddhi Mata Mandir, Gandhvi

En route your Dwarka-Somnath roadtrip, your first stop is at a quaint small coastal town called Gandhvi about 65 kilometers from Dwarka. The place is famous for the Harsiddhi Mata Mandir which is an ancient Hindu temple located atop Koylo Dungar hill at Gandhvi near Porbandar. It is one of the oldest temples in Gujarat and one of the most popular pilgrimage sites. However presently no Puja is performed in this temple and there is another temple in the market of the town built in the 13th century AD.

Both temples are dedicated to Goddess Harsiddhi, the Happy Mother, and is also known as Harshal Mata Temple. The goddess is regarded as one of the manifestations of Amba and Kalika, the Hindu Devi. She is also known as Harshal, Harshad and Harshat Mata. The original temple atop the hill is said to have been built by Lord Krishna himself.to commemorate his victory over Jarasandha. The main temple over a hillock overlooks the sea and is just 10 minutes away from the town temple. It may be noted here that there are a couple of other temples by the same name, one in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh and the other in Rajpipla of Narmada district in Gujarat.

Mul Dwarka, Visavada

This is another important attraction on the way during your Dwarka-Somnath roadtrip. Mul Dwarka in Visavada is located quite close to Porbandar and the place is associated with events related to Lord Krishna. It is believed that Lord Krshna and his party while shifting from Mathura to Dwarka stopped here for the first time. Hence the name Mul Dwarka. Popular belief has tt that Lord Krishna stayed here for few years while Dwarka nagari was being built.

Lord Krishna’s “paduka” can be seen in this temple as a remembrance in Visavada (Mul Dwarka). These temples were built around 750 years ago by a devotee named Vijant Bhagat. The temple complex here boasts temples dedicated to Lord Shiva as Siddheswar and Nilakanth. There are also two other temples, one dedicated to Ranchor Rai i.e Lord Krishna as he is known in Saurashtra region and the other to Shiva. The temple follows the Nagar style of architecture. There is also a L shaped step-well dating back to the 13th century. During my visit I found the temple premise as well as the stepped well in complete mess. I wish the temple complex to be maintained properly.

Kirti Mandir, Porbandar

This is the most important place that you come across on your Dwarka-Sonmath roadtrip . The place is associated with Mahatma Gandhi and it was his birth place which has now been converted into a memorial museum. Tucked away in Porbandar’s narrow lanes. Kirti Mandir is the name of the memorial that stands next to the family’s modest ancestral home.

A sprawling courtyard is surrounded by a photo gallery depicting Gandhi’s life’s journey. The house where he was born and briefly lived is located at the far end of the courtyard. Many visitors want to see the exact location where he was born. This was a three-story house that had been modified since Mahatma Gandhi’s grandfather built it.

The museum has a library that contains books written by Gandhiji or about his philosophies. Through the museum, visitors can also access Gandhiji’s ancestral home. As you walk into the house, you will notice large paintings of Gandhiji and his wife Kasturba, some of which include rare black and white photographs of the two sharing lighter moments. A number of world leaders have paid their respects here, and they continue to do so.

Sudama Temple, Porbandar

Apart from Mahatma Gandhi, Porbandar is also famous as the birthplace of Sudama, the childhood friend of Lord Krishna. Porbandar was formerly known as Sudamapuri. Located not very far from Kirti Mandir, Sudama temple is one of Gujarat’s most revered sites and one of Porbandar’s most visited pilgrimage sites.

This is the only temple in India dedicated to Sudama. Shri Ram Devji Jethwa of the Jethwa dynasty constructed the temple between 1902 and 1907 AD. It is said that during the construction of this shrine, the funds were exhausted, and the people of Porbandar had to host various drama shows to raise the necessary funds. The temple has a lot of historic and religious significance, which attracts a lot of visitors.

The temple’s architecture is simple, with carved marble pillars open on all sides and set in the middle of a garden. The temple is stunning, with a sikhara decorated with exquisite architecture and carvings. These carvings can also be seen above the pillars and arches. There is a lovely mural depicting Lord Krishna washing Sudama’s feet when his friend came to meet him, as well as a statue of Krishna and Sudama embracing. Madhavpur Beach is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Gujarat, with a view that is difficult to match.

The beach, named after the ruler Madhav Rao, has become popular among other beaches due to its convenient location. The beach is lined with coconut trees, and the water is crystal clear. It is also the site of a two-decade-long conservation project for Green Sea and Olive Ridley turtles.

Because the beach is less commercialised, it is very clean, with azure blue waters that attract people who want to spend quality time with family and friends. Cold drinks and coconut water are available at the shacks. Camel rides are also available. But none of that matters if you don’t have anywhere to sit and relax for a few hours. There is also no food. The sea water is deep with high tides and thus swimming is prohibited.There are no lifeguards on duty to handle any crisis. The beach has scope for great potential as a tourist spot.

Bhalka Tirth, Veraval

Just when you’re about to reach your destination, Somnath you come across Bhalka Tirth, a sacred place associated with an important event related toLord Krishna. The place is located in Veraval, a twin town of Somanth about 4 kilometers from the Somnath Jyotirlinga Shrine. The place narrates the last moments of Lord Krishna. Popular belief has it that a hunter Jara struck an arrow at him mistaking his partly visible body for a deer mortally wounding Lord Krishna when he was meditating under a peepal tree at night.

According to religious scriptures Rama, i.e. Krishna, in his previous Rama Avatar is said to have given a boon to the monkey king Vali whom he killed indirectly in hiding rather than directly fighting with him in front. The above action of the hunter in Krishna avatar is said to be in accordance with Rama’s (Krishna’s) earlier Avatar’s boon. It is a popular pilgrimage destination for visitors to Somnath. I visited this place for the first time in 1995. At that time there was nothing at the site except a small temple housing the peepal tree where Lord Krishna was struck by an arrow. Twenty five years later the place has turned into a huge complex and attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists everyday.

Now a huge temple dedicated to Lord Krishna has been built at the site. The sanctum sanctorum, which houses Krishna and the hunter Jara’s idols, is housed in a beautifully designed hall. Inside the temple, you can also see the Peepal tree where Lord Krishna is said to have been mortally wounded.

Distance between Dwarka and Somnath is approximately 230 kilometers. You can hire a taxi which might cost you Rs 4,000. Dwarka Somnath Tour is considered as one of the most pious pilgrimage destinations for Hindu devout. Somnath is devoted to Lord Shiva but Dwarka is revered with the devotion of Lord Krishna. Dwarka is one of the pilgrimage sites of the Char Dham Pilgrimage circuit which includes Dwarka, Puri, Rameswaram and Badrinath . Dwarkadhish Temple:

Constructed in Chalukya Styled architecture, Dwarkadhish Temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. As per the belief the temple is around 2200 years old and was constructed by Vajranabha. Pilgrims who visits this temple gets so fascinated by the black splendid idol and feels like that god is really present in front of them. Janmashtami celebration of Dwarkadhish Temple is the most popular occasion and at this time the temple is flocked by thousands of devotees. This five storied shrine is beautifully constructed with limestone and sand. The environment of the temple is filled with devotees chanting prayers and performing rituals.

Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple:

If you move towards Beyt Island from Gomati Dwarka then you can spot a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Thousands of devotees flock at this temple from every nook and corners of the country. There is a belief among Hindu devout that if they visit this temple then they will be free from the effects of poison. As per the mythological epic Shiva Purana, if someone reads with a deep devotion about the birth and death of this Jyotirlinga then they will get the proper attainment of everlasting happiness and prosperity. One can spot Nageshwar Jyotirlinga in two other Indian states Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Beyt Dwarka:

A Small Island, also known as Beyt Shankhodhar was once serving as the main port of Gujarat before Okha development. Spotting dolphins hopping into the sea, marine excursions, camping and organizing picnics on the beach can be witnessed if you are at Beyt Dwarka. The island is home to numerous temples among which Keshavraiji is the most significant one which was built around 500 years back by Vallabhacharya. The boat ride is of around 10-12 miles which is never upsetting as the view of seagulls hopping into the sea makes it a delightful and a soul enriching ride which no one would want to miss.

Gomati Ghat:

Situated on the banks of the River Gomti, the Ghat holds numerous small temples, all dedicated to different gods and goddesses. There is a Gomati Kund which is the confluence of Arabian Sea and Gomati River which holds spiritual value.Devotees flocking at this place take dip into the holy water of River Gomati having a belief in their heart to get rid of their sins and to cleanse the soul. The river holds almost 12 Ghats surrounded by and each Ghat holds a temple including Samudra Narayan Temple, Panchnanda, Chakra Narayan etc. The shrines are accessible by hiring a boat which gives the spell bound beauty of the entire town. You can buy souvenirs like tea stands, wooden decorated camels and some jewelleries.

Lighthouse:

Dwarka is however commonly known as Land of spiritualism but besides this the city also houses multitude of forts and museums and Lighthouse is also one of them which gives a visual treat to tourists visiting the city. The monument is opened only for a short time in a day which is from 4:30 -6 in the evening. Watching sunset from the height the monument gives a treat to the eyes and mesmerizes the tourists. Dating back to early 19 th century the monument was constructed and has gone through many installations like to detect fog the sound horn equipment or vibrator was installed and before that lamp was installed. The tower was initially 18 metres high which has now touched the height of 43 metres. If you are a photogenic then this can be the perfect place to accumulate pictures of the panoramic views of the city.

Somnath Temple:

This is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the significance of the temple is mentioned in many of the Hindu epics like Rig Veda and some others. It is believed that the temple has been destroyed several times by Muslim and Portuguese invaders and is renovated every time. Originally the temple was constructed with gold by King Somraj then it got constructed with silver by Ravana. Due to its coastline location tourists can experience the fresh,cool and gentle breeze which provides them a proper relax by freshening their mood. The main Shikhara of the temple is at a height of almost 155 feet and the Kalash made of stone weighs around 10 tonnes. An evening show gets organized inside the temple which has an ocean view setting accompanied with light and sound.

Triveni Ghat:

Situated at the convergence of three rivers – Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati, the Ghat is a must visit destination in Somnath. Watching sunset from this Ghat is an Eye treating and soul enriching view and the place is generally very much crowded during evening. You can enjoy the boat ride too and can buy the items made up of shells. If you are a photogenic then this can be the place where you can get some beautiful clicks but you will have to face the excess crowd. If you are a religious person then you may visit two temples which are located there like Gita Temple and Lakshmi narayana Temple which are located near to the Ghats.

The flamboyant street life and the splendid architectures make Junagadh the most beautiful district whose beauty is much inspiring to others. The district is also known as Sorath which was the ancient name of Junagadh. The district still holds the evidences of the princely State of Junagadh of the Medieval Era. The main attraction of this temple is Girnar Hill which is located at the east side of the city. The hill has been serving as a religious site to Hindus, Jains and the Buddhists from a very long time in fact we can say that it has been doing so since 3 rd century BC. A home of Asiatic Lions “Gir National Park” is also located very close to Junagadh.

Bhalka Tirth:

It is a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna which is not so big in size. The significance of the temple is mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita. The legend behind the origin of this temple is based on a misconception of a huntsman. Once Lord Krishna was resting in a forest under the Peepal tree on a deer skin and the poacher shoot the arrow thinking that there is a deer and Lord Krishna got injured. To ask for the forgiveness and to show his devotion the poacher marked the place as Lord Krishna’s resting and the temple got constructed at the same place after some time. The development of this place is given under the assistance of Central government.

Laxminarayan Temple:

The temple is constructed on 18 pillars on which the inscriptions of Bhagavad-Gita is carved out which are eye catching and informative as those are the sacred messages of Lord Krishna. Laxmi Narayan Temple is located on the banks of the Triveni Teerth and modern Indian architecture style has been used to design the temple. You can witness 24 Avatars of Lord Vishnu which are depicted in the walls of the temple. Devotees can do the Darshan of several other gods and goddess as there are beautifully designed idols present inside the premise of the temple.

Somnath Jyotirling Temple – Best Places to Visit in Somnath

The Somnath Jyotirling Temple has been drawing pilgrims to its fold for thousands of years. Standing at the point where the western coast of India ends, and the Arabian Sea begins, this Shiva temple is considered the oldest of the Jyotirlingas. The Dwadash Jyotirlinga Yatra begins with a visit to the Somnath temple.

The temple is steeped in legend, mythology, and history. It is a temple that has risen again and again after being razed to the ground by invading marauders time and again. The Somnath temple in its present form took shape in the year 1951, thanks to the efforts that were lead by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Shri K.M.Munshi.

A visit to Gujarat remains incomplete without paying obeisance at the sacred Jyotirlinga temple of Somnath. It is indeed one of the most famous tourist places to visit in Somnath.

Ahilyabai Temple

The Ahalyabhai temple is located just a few yards away from the Somnath Jyotirlinga temple. It is a small but old temple with a Shiv Ling as the principal deity. The temple was built by the warrior queen of the Maratha Empire, Ahilyabai Holkar, who is credited with building and renovating thousands of temples and Dharamshalas across India including the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi .

There is also a belief that the Shiv Linga in the Ahilyabai temple was the original deity that was located in the main Somnath temple.

The Sangam or confluence of rivers is considered very sacred in Hinduism. The great Somnath Jyotirling temple stands very near the confluence of three rivers, namely Hiran, Kapil, and the mythical Saraswati river. The three rivers meet at the point which is known as Triveni Sangam, and they flow into the waters of the Arabian Sea.

Devotees bathe in the holy waters of the Triveni Sangam before proceeding for the darshan of the Jyotirlinga. The Triveni Sangam is also believed to be the spot where Sri Krishna walked to after he was shot by a hunter.

Kamnath Mahadev Temple and Sharada Peeth

There is a very ancient and large temple complex near the Triveni Sangam. It is a temple whose main deity is Kamnath. According to legend Lord Shiva with the power of his third eye had reduced the God of Love, Kamdev to ashes, and hence the deity here is worshipped as Kamnath. Near the temple is located a small cave, where it is believed that Adi Shankaracharya once meditated.

The Prabhas Patan Museum is an archaeological museum that houses the remains of the ancient temple of Somnath, which existed in ruins before the current structure was built. The museum showcases a fascinating collection of items from the past that includes stone sculptures, inscription slabs, pottery, and other artifacts. What is of special attraction in the museum is the reconstructed 12th century Somnath shrine.

The hallowed land of Somnath is not only blessed with the presence of the sacred Jyotirlinga of Somnath but also the feet of the Lord Sri Krishna. Bhalka Tirth is a temple to Krishna. It stands at the spot where the hunter Jara, shot an arrow at Krishna and brought about the end of the Krishna avatar.

The temple depicts beautifully the scene of Krishna lying with an arrow stuck in his feet and a remorseful Jara kneeling in front of him. A peepal tree that is believed to have been the same tree under which Sri Krishna sat when he was shot is located within the sanctum sanctorum. Bhalka Tirth is definitely one of the most beautiful and sacred places to visit in Somnath.

Shri Krishna is believed to have walked a few kilometers after being shot by the hunter’s arrow and reached near the Triveni Sangam, at a place which is known today as Dehotsarga. The tranquil place where hundreds of white birds fly over the flowing river Hiran is also known as Golokdham Tirth.

This is the place where the last rites of the mortal remains of Shri Krishna was performed by Arjun. Footprints or Padukas of Shri Krishna are kept in a canopy overlooking the Hiran River. There are many temples within the premises, that are important places to visit in Somnath.

Baldevji Ki Gufa or Baldevji’s Temple

There is a small temple located in a cave below ground level in the Dehotsarg temple campus. This is believed to have been the place where Baldev or Balaram, the brother of Sri Krishna, left the material world immediately after Shri Krishna left his mortal remains. Balaram is believed to have been Sheshnag, and so he too undertook his journey to Vaikunta in his original form of a serpent.

There is a beautiful temple in Dehotsarg, called Gita Mandir built by the Birlas. The spacious temple has beautiful marble statues of Shri Krishna, Lord Lakshminarayan, and Sita and Ram. The temple is ornamented with 18 pillars on which are carved the 18 chapters of the Bhagavad Gita. The walls have paintings that depict different episodes of the life of Shri Krishna.

Lakshmi Narayan Temple

Right next to the Gita Mandir stands a temple to Lakshmi Narayana . The image of Vishnu along with his consort Lakshmi in this temple is believed to have been designed on the lines of the one in the Lakshminarayan temple in Badrinath. The temple has beautiful carvings that depict different episodes from the Puranas and Hindu mythology.

Parshuram is a towering figure from Indian mythology. He is believed to be the sixth avatar or incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Parshram is also one of the seven immortals or Chiranjeevis according to Hindu scriptures. Temples dedicated to Parshuram are very rare and one such temple stands near the Triveni Sangam in Somnath. The temple is believed to mark the spot where Parshuram did penance and meditated on Lord Somnath in order to relieve himself of the sin of killing Kshatriyas.

The sanctum sanctorum of the temple has an image of Parshuram which is flanked by images of Kala and Kama. Within this temple complex are smaller shrines to Ganesha and Hanuman. Significantly there is a small temple dedicated to Parshuram’s mother Renuka behind the main temple.

Sun Temple or Suraj Mandir of Somnath

There are many temples dedicated to Surya or the Sun in India. The most famous of these are the temples in Konark, Modhera, Katarmal, and Kashmir. There is an ancient temple dedicated to the Sun God in Somnath too. It is located about a kilometer from the Jyotirlinga temple. The ancient Sun temple has a beautiful architectural design and its origins are quite ancient. There is a stepwell within the temple premises.

Panch Pandava Gufa or Hinglaj Mata Ni Gufa

There is an ancient cave temple atop a hillock not far from the Sun temple. It is believed that the Pandavas meditated here and prayed to Shiva. It is said that the Pandavas also worshipped Hinglaj Mata apart from Shiva in the caves. Today there is a temple with images of the Pandavas, Shiva, Durga, Ram, Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman.

There is another temple that is dedicated to Shiva called Veneshwar Mahadev located right in the town center. The ancient temple has a fascinating legend associated with it. During a siege of the fort of Prabhas Patan by Mahmud Gazni in the 11th century, the temple was protected by a Rajput king who put up fierce resistance and frustrated Mahmud Gazn’s efforts to break into the famous Somnath temple.

Now, it so happened that the Rajput king had a daughter named Veni who was known to visit a Shiva temple located outside the fortress. Mahmud Ghazni came to know of this and hatched a plan to kidnap the princess to put pressure on the Rajput forces. So he waited to abduct the princess from the temple. But when he tried to do so, a miracle happened, the Shiv Linga in the temple split open, and the princess disappeared inside it. Marks of the Shiva Linga at the place where it split open and those of the princess can still be seen.

The temple came to be known as Shree Veneshwar Mahadev temple in honour of the princess and her devotion to Shiva. This legend has been immortalized by the great literateur of Gujarat, Shri K.M.Munsh in one of his books.

Here is the best 4 days itinerary for Dwarka, Somnath temple via Porbandar and Sasan Gir via Diu.

Day 1 – Dwarka

Arrival at Jamnagar and proceed towards Dwarka, 138 km by road. Get some rest and visit the Dwarkadhish Temple also known as the Jagat Mandir and near by Rukmini Temple, stay overnight in Dwarka.

Day 2 – Nageshwar Jyotirlinga

After breakfast visit the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga temple,Harsiddhi Mata Temple and Beyt Dwarka. In the afternoon travel to Somnath via Porbandar, If time allows visit these famous places in Porbandar. Take one day halt in Porbandar to explore the city and bird park (Optional)

Located at a distance of 21 km north of Dwarka and 5 km from Nageshwara jyotirlinga mandir, Gopi Talav is a small tank/pond which is surrounded by yellow sand which is popularly known as Gopi Chandan. Upon their visit, the devotees put this Tilak Chandan on their foreheads and body during their visit here. From the ancient times it present day the Chandan produced in this area is still extremely smooth and yellow in outlook. This place holds immense significance in Hindu mythology for being the place where Lord Krishna used to entice the gopis. It is also believed that Lord Krishna had killed Bhaumasura (demon) and freed all the 16,000 princesses at this very site. This site is named after the princess Gopi, who had fallen in love with Lord Krishna and wished to marry him. This place is situated en route Beyt Dwarka and can be easily reached.

Gomti Ghat also has a great religious and mythological significance. According to myths River Gomati is the daughter of Sage Vashishta and her waters are powerful enough to purge one's mortal sins.
