H istorically, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism was created by His Excellency, Dr. Sam. O. Egwu, in June 2000 in order to give impetus to the development of culture and tourism potential that abounds in the State. The Ministry is presently located along Enugu-Abakaliki Express Road, just in front of Democracy Estate, Abakaliki. The Ministry has the following parastatals attached to her:

List of Tourist Attractions in Ebonyi State

  • The Abakaliki Green Lake: It is located right inside Government House. Small huts are built there for relaxation and for visitors to admire the many wonders of nature.
  • The Abakaliki Golf Course: The environment is naturally beautiful and equipped for games by golf players. It is equally located at Abakaliki, the State capital.
  • The Amusement Park: This park is wonderfully made as a relaxation spot especially for children. It is well equipped to serve the purpose. It is a place you cannot afford to miss as a visitor to Ebonyi State. It is also located at Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State.
  • Amanchor Cave: The cave Is located at Amanchor in Afikpo South. The Cave is about 4 kilometers long. Plans are underway to develop this cave, as it is capable of attracting visitors to the site from within and outside the country.
  • The Golden Sand Beaches at Ndibe, Ozizza and Unwana (all in Afikpo zone of the State) and Oferekpe Beach in Ikwo LGA of the State are all tourism destinations in the State.
  • Mkpuma Ekwa Oku Rocks: These are rocks naturally shaped like eggs. These rock formations have been there for ages. They are located at Ndieze Community in Izzi Local Government Area.
  • Okposi Salt Lake: This is located at Okposi in Ohaozzara LGA. The economic importance of this lake is enormous. It has served as the economic base for most of the rural women in the area.
  • Abakaliki Greater Rice Husks: This is located at Abakaliki, the State capital, precisely at the rice mill industry. During rice production, the rice husks are piled into heaps, which makes them look like sand dunes in the desert.
  • Slave Market/Route at Ezza North/South: This is one of the legacies of the infamous trade on human cargo that took place In Africa.

The tourism industry cannot thrive in any given society unless there are well-developed hotel services. For this reason, the state has embarked on the development of hotels. The following are good hotels of international standard.

  • Grace Court Hotel & Suites: This hotel has about sixty-five (65) developed suites with a bar and restaurant that offers continental African and Chinese cuisines. A conference hall and other facilities are provided. The hotel is located at the heart of the State capital, Abakaliki.
  • Ebonyi Hotels: The hotel is located just beside the Government House Abakaliki. This hotel has 37 furnished rooms. There is also Ebonyi Hotels Afikpo. These two hotels are state government-owned.

Located in south-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria, Ebonyi State was created in 1996 and it is called “the salt of the nation” for its huge salt deposit at the Okposi and Uburu salt lakes. The state is divided into thirteen local government areas which include Abakaliki, Afikpo South, Afikpo North, Ebonyi, Effium, Ezza, Ezza South, Ikwo, Ishielu, Ivo, Ohaozara, Ohaukwu and Onicha.

History Ebonyi State is one of six new states created in 1996 late General Sanni Abacha’s administration when it was carved out of the old Abakaliki division of Enugu State and the old Afikpo division of Abia State.

People & Culture Ebonyi State has an estimated population of 4,339,136 based on the 2005 census and the inhabitants are spread across 5,935 square kilometers. The state is predominantly dominated by the Igbos with other minority ethnic groups from neighbouring states.

The people of the state are predominantly farmers and traders. The main crops produced in the state are rice, yam, palm produce, cocoa, maize, groundnut, plantain, banana, cassava, melon, sugar cane, beans, fruits and vegetables. Fishing is also carried out in Afikpo.

Weather/Climate The tropical climate of the state is broadly of two seasons which are the rainy season between April and October and dry season between November and March. A temperature throughout the year ranges between 21 °C to 29 °C and humidity is relatively high. The annual rainfall varies from 2,000mm in the southern areas to 1,150mm in the northern areas. The state enjoys luxuriant vegetation with high forest zone (rain forest) in the south and sub-savannah forest in the northern fringe.

Cities & Towns Other important cities and towns include Abakaliki, Afikpo, Amasiri, Edda, Ikwo, Ishiagu, Nkalagu, Okposi, Onicha, Onueke, Uburu, Unwana etc.

Unwana and Ndibe Sand Beaches: These beaches are respectively located at Unwana and Ndibe in Afikpo North LGA. The two beaches are part of extensive scenic golden sand beaches along Cross River basin. They are ideal centres for relaxation, sunbathing, swimming, sport fishing, canoe-racing, and yachting.

Abakaliki Golf Course: Situated along Ezza road and spanning 11/2km, the golf course has a modern golfing terrain. Its undulating knolls are golf able all the year round.

Fati Abubakar Park: Fati Abubakar amusement park is located adjacent to the golf course along Ezza road, Abakaliki. Beautifully built in the traditional culture of Ebonyi State, the park provides a place for amusement and relaxation for children and adults.

Abakaliki Green Lake: The green lake served as a leisure and relaxation centre for the colonial masters. It’s upgraded with modernized facilities which make it a tourist haven.

Ogbodu Conical Mound: This is found in Ngbo in Ohaukwu LGA which served as a pre-colonial defence and military observation post.

Slave Market Route, Ezza: Located in Ezza in Ezza-South, this market route was where slaves were traded before being moved to places for trade during the slave and intertribal war years.

Spectacular Natural Rock Formations, Akpoha: These rock formations at Akpoha in Afikpo-North Local Government Area are one of the beautiful landscape figures appreciated.

I must say you may not be someone who take interest in golf game but you will definitely love the environment, the abakaliki golf course is naturally beautiful and equipped for games by golf players.

This amazing golf course is located along  Ezza road and right behind Federal Teaching Hospital, right in the state capital, Abakaliki. It has lots of relaxation joints close-by where you can relax while you watch the game.

A private association consisting people who take part in the golf game takes charge of the course and makes sure of its beautiful look doesn’t fade.

Golden Sand Beach At Afikpo

The golden sand beach located at three different locations, Oziza, Ndibe and Uwana, all in Afikpo zone is a small beach which is part of extensive scenic golden sand beach along Cross River basin and serves as an ideal place to get the most out of interesting beach adventures.

Located a little far from the state capital, the Ndibe for instance can be reached from Abakaliki through Amuro/Mgbom roundabout in Afikpo. Its usually crowded on weekends with people who have taken advantage of it as a center for relaxation, sunbathing, swimming, sport fishing, canoe-racing, and yachting.

This three places all in the same place and not far from each other should be on your list of places you must visit in ebonyi state.

The last but not the list on our list is another beautiful lake, Abakaliki Green Lake , but this time its located right inside the government house in the state capital.

Used to be haven for colonial masters who cherished its beuty, it has now witnessed upgrade to mordenized facilities which has transformed its beuty beyond what it was before.

Small huts built for relaxation and for visitors to admire the beuty of the lake makes it a good place for tourists to relax while catching the view.

This is a small cave located in Amanchor, a small community in Afikpo   South Local Government. Allthogh it’s yet to be developed but it’s still worth a visit.

Mkpuma Ekwa Oku Rocks

Mkpuma Ekwa Oku Rocks is found in Izzi local government of ebonyi state. These are rocks naturally shaped like chicken eggs, thus the name. Its a great place to pay a visit.

Slave Market/Route at Ezza 

This is one of the places where the african human trade took place. Its an important place in history.

  • Okposi Salt Lake: This is located at Okposi in Ohaozzara LGA. The economic importance of this lake is enormous. It has served as the economic base for most of the rural women in the area.
  • Abakaliki Greater Rice Husks: This is located at Abakaliki, the State capital, precisely at the rice mill industry. During rice production, the rice husks are piled into heaps, which makes them look like sand dunes in the desert.

Ebonyi State covers an area of 5,532 square kilometres. It lies at latitude 6°15′ North and longitude 8°05′ East. It has a population of 2,176,947 (2006 census) 2,880,383 (2016 forecast) and a population density of 393. The state accounts for 1.6% of Nigeria’s total population.

The early settlers of Ebonyi State were the Igbo people. The state is named after the Ebonyi (Aboine) River. Under the three-region structure of 1954, Ebonyi State was part of the Eastern Region. In 1967 with the creation of twelve federal states by General Yakubu Gowon’s military government, it became a part of East-Central State. The 1976 military government of General Murtala Muhammed created nineteen states out of the existing twelve and Ebonyi State became part of Anambra State. 

With the creation of Enugu and Abia States in 1991 by the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida, Ebonyi State became part of these states. In 1996, the military government of General Sanni Abacha created Ebonyi State by combining portions of Abia and Enugu States.

The Igbo people form the largest ethnic group in Ebonyi State and their language is the state’s lingua franca. A total of nine languages – Afikpo, Mgbo, Izzi, Ezaa, Ikwo, Kukele, Legbo, Mbembe and Oringare – are spoken in the state, all of which are Igbo dialects. Christianity is the major religion in Ebonyi State. About 1% of the people in the state are Muslims, while roughly 8% hold other beliefs.

Ebonyi State is predominantly forest savannah. Agriculture and fishing are important in the state. An estimated eighty-five percent of the population earns its living from one form of agricultural activity or another. Ebonyi’s agricultural productivity is one of the highest in Nigeria. The main cash crops in the state are rice, oil palm, yam, sugar cane, cocoa and groundnut. Important minerals found in the state include lead, marble, zinc and limestone. 

The state is called “the salt of the nation” because of the huge salt deposits at the Okposi and Uburu salt lakes. Nkalagu, where a major limestone formation is located. There are also quarries and rice mills.

The tertiary institutions in the state are Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo; Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana; Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki; Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu; and State College of Education, lkwo.

Mmahi Ezi Salt Lake, Okposi Okwu

The Mmahi Ezi Salt Lake was discovered about 400 years by hunters in search of water.

The women process the salt using instructions said to have been issued by the goddess Mmahi. It has served as the economic base for most of the women in rural communities. It was an important supply of salt during the Nigerian-Biafran war.

The Amanchor cave is one of the longest caves in Africa, It is about 4 kilometres long and 3 metres high. The cave has several tunnels that lead to different towns making it accessible from Afikpo, Abakaliki, Ngusu and Akaeze. Some cultural activities, including the Orie-Ogba festival take place in the cave.

The Greater Rice Husks look like sand dunes in the desert when piled into heaps during the processing of rice.

The two major festivals in Ebonyi are the New Yam festival and the Dance Parade by Masquerades. The new yam festival is associated with the yam planting cycle. It marks the end of the planting season and heralds the harvest and consumption of new yam across communities in the state. Masquerades have particular importance in the traditions of the state and its festival features vary across different communities.

Ebonyi is an agrarian state in south-east Nigeria. It is inhabited and populated primarily by the Igbos. Its capital and largest city is Abakaliki. Known as the “Salt of the Nation” because of its large salt deposits, Ebonyi State is one of the 36 states in Nigeria. It was created in 1996, making it one of the youngest states in Nigeria. The State shares a border with Benue State to the North, Enugu State to the west, Imo and Abia States to the south and Cross River State to the east. The State capital and largest town is Abakaliki. The second largest town is Afikpo. Other towns are Ikwo, Izzi, Onicha, Edda, Onueke, Ezzamgbo, Nkalagu, Uburu, Ishiagu, Amasiri and Okposi.

Ebony State was one of the six states created in 1996 by the then federal military government of General Sani Abacha. The State of Ebonyi was created from parts of both Enugu State and Abia State, which in turn were initially constituents of the old Anambra and Imo States respectively. For administrative purposes, Ebonyi State is divided into three Senatorial Zones, each represented by a Senator at the National Assembly, and six Federal Constituencies, each represented by a Member of the House of Representatives also at the National Assembly. The three Senatorial Zones are:

Ebonyi North – comprising Abakaliki, Ebonyi, Ishielu, Ohaukwu and lzzi LGAs

Ebonyi Central – comprising Ikwo, Ezza North and Ezza South LGA.

Educationally, Ebony State It is home to six Higher institutions of learning: Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki (EBSU); Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo (FUNAI); Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana; Savannah Institute of Technology, Ishieke Junction, Abakaliki; Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu; Ebonyi State College of Education Ikwo (EBSCOEI) and College of Health Sciences, Ezzamgbo.

In the health sector, Ebonyi has two major hospitals – Ebonyi State Teaching Hospital and the Federal Medical Center – both in Abakaliki. The State also has three general hospitals located in Onueke, Onicha and Enohia Itim (near Afikpo). These are complemented by several private hospitals and clinics in various towns and villages. The State also has three schools of nursing at Uburu, Afikpo and Edda.

In terms of accommodation, Ebonyi hotels can be affordable and inexpensive, although there are luxurious hotels in Ebonyi, especially in the state capital, but their prices are different from was you see in most of the big cities in Nigeria. Upon your entry into the Ebonyi by road through any of the transport company as Ebonyi does not have An Airport, taking a ride around the state might be a little stressful as the only means of transportation within the city is via the commercial bus, tricycle popularly known as keke or motorbike know as okada.

Ebonyi State has a rich cultural heritage. This is expressed in the many colorful cultural dances, folklore and artwork, some of which have attracted national and international attention. The popular Nkwa Umuagbogho Dance Group of Afikpo has won several national and international merit awards.

In the industrial sector, the State has several food processing factories including dozens of rice mills, many quarry factories, a fertilizer blending plant, one of Nigeria’s largest poultries (Nkali Poultry) and one of Nigeria’s foremost cement factories (the Nigerian Cement Company at Nkalagu).

The rice mill industry serves is the source of the local rice delivered to most Nigerian homes. The rice husks have become sort of landmark for the people of Ebonyi State.
