The First Witch

Today, a seafood restaurant occupies the spot where the Orchard of Bridget Bishop stood.

She was the First Woman in Salem accused of being a witch.

A man named John Louder testified he fought off an attack by a hideous, deformed monster, chasing it from his house, he followed it as it retook the form of Bridget Bishop and disappeared into her orchard.

She was eventually executed in June of 1692.

Since then, hundreds of accounts of eerie and unexplained apparitions have been recorded in this town; even the first president of the United States, George Washington, experienced a haunting during his visit to Salem in 1789 and fled the town immediately!

There are plenty of museums and historical attractions to enjoy in Salem. Still, only this tour can bring you the exhilaration and thrill of retracing the steps between each of the city’s most haunted spots and standing in the presence of their rich histories.

We hope the whole family will be able to bear the harrowing tales while being in the presence of Salem’s buried citizens.

Why is Salem Haunted?

The famed “Witch House” is the dark and foreboding former home of Judge Jonathan Corwin, the man responsible for condemning accused witches to their death. This building is the only one in Salem with actual ties to the Salem Witch Trials that is still standing today.

The tour culminates with a visit to Salem’s Old Burying Point Cemetery, dating back to 1637. This is the final unhappy resting place of Jonathan Corwin, prosecutor, and judge for the 20 women put to death.

About 16 miles north of Boston, Salem is a town of just over 40,000 inhabitants. Salem’s commitment to preserving its shameful history has made it a perfect spot for spirits to linger and for visitors to experience a connection with the past.

Each year during Halloween weekend, about 250,000 visitors and tourists flock to the town in order to experience the best of Witch City.

How did Salem become the center for all these haunted happenings?

Salem’s rich history and the fact that many of its oldest structures and most notorious sites are well preserved today, giving it a truly eerie feeling.

The Salem Ghost Tour takes you to all of these sites and reveals their true stories so that you can feel connected to the history that took place there. Experiencing these stories in the dark and at the sites where they occurred is a unique experience that can’t be recreated by simply reading about their history.

Reserve your spot on the Salem Ghosts tour today to get a more authentic experience!

Test your bravery, and join us, with so many tours and activities to choose from in salem, how do you choose which ones to book, here are 4 reasons to book with salem ghosts.

Salem is full of fascinating stories

It’s not just witches that haunt Salem, during the research for this tour evidence was found of so many other hauntings and amazing stories from history. Hear about Mr. Derby, and his ghost that haunts the Old Town Hall. Mr. Derby was a prominent merchant, who sponsored a full fleet of privateers during the revolutionary war. Although they did not engage in the war directly, they played a great part in diminishing the supply lines of the British. His life in Salem did not have a happy end, his pride and joy, the previous house on this site, was torn down by his son, and gifted to the city to build the current building. His ghost is still unhappy with the decision…

We Are Professional tour guides

When you book an experience with Salem Ghost Tours, you’re securing your spot with a professional group of licensed tour guides that specialize in providing safe, thrilling, and fun tours. Dining on the cheap: The best 10 happy hours in Salem

Where to find deals on food and drink on the cheap — mac n' cheese fritters anyone some of these are even on the weekends..

happy tours salem

This story has been updated to reflect a recent change in happy hour times at Bentley's Grill.

With slogans like "$1 off cocktails from 4-6!" or "our patio is OPEN for happy hour!," longstanding bars such as Magoo's, Kelli's and Half Penny all offer discounted well drinks and beer, perhaps a cheap bar snack or two, but a handful of spots go above and beyond. The deals are fine, the workday is done, and thank God Uber and Lyft can take you home. Here are our favorites:

Venti’s Cafe

Happy hour: 4 to 6 p.m. daily (both locations) and 9 p.m. to close (South Salem's taphouse)

The deal: Pop by this Salem mainstay for discounted food specials, $2-off pints, $1-off tulip glass and even a special cocktail.

The vibe: You know, it’s Venti’s. Who in Salem hasn’t been to a Venti’s? You’ll see some young families, maybe a few musicians between day jobs, maybe a few beer bros comparing notes on Portland IPAs.

Good for: An introduction to beer — lots of good local brews on tap without a crazy price tag

What to order: Food special (like bacon pb&j) and one of the restaurant’s several awesome rotating beers

If you go:  2840 Commercial St. SE, 503-391-5100 (taphouse), 325 Court St. NE, 503-399-8733 (basement bar)

More: Best Salem restaurants for vegetarians and vegans

Happy hour: 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. to close Wednesdays-Saturdays, all night Tuesdays

The deal: Choose from a truly huge food menu, including small orders of menu favorites such as painted hills brisket for $8 and shrimp and bacon risotto for $9. Pair that with the restaurant’s dramatically discounted drinks, like a $6 scratch margarita or a champagne cocktail for $5.

The vibe: Sleek and often quiet, for those craving an inexpensive dinner and drink to enjoy in peace

Good for: Picking up divorcees, hiding from 20somethings

What to order: Harissa chicken skewers ($6) and scratch margarita ($6) or painted hills brisket ($8) and house wine ($5)

If you go:  135 Liberty St. NE, 503-362-8830

More: Dining Review: Amadeus relies on good food, not gimmicks

Happy hour:  4:30 to 6 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays

The deal: Chef David Rosales’ upscale small plates, from the smoky chorizo and Parmesan croquettes to his obsessively crafted salsas, are available for $5 or $6, with cocktails and beer clocking in between $4 and $5.

The vibe: Polished but still colorful, Andaluz is small and intimate enough for a date night and bright and perky enough for after-work drinks and snacks.

Good for: Dates, after-work drinks, impressing the boss

What to order: Chorizo-Parmesan croquettes ($5) and sherry lemonade ($5) or bacon-wrapped dates ($6) and sangria ($5)

If you go:  130 High St. SE, 503-585-1773

More: Andaluz-based pop-up Kid Aztec: New burritos downtown from a familiar kitchen

More: Dining Review: Andaluz walks line between fun and fancy

Happy hour: 2 to 4 p.m. Mondays-Fridays

The deal:  This Salem venue and restaurant recently decided to chop tapas prices in half. That means $2.50 chips and salsa, $4.50 samosas and $3 Brussels. For the quality of food alone, Taproot's happy hour is probably the best bang for your buck in town.

The vibe: A hippie's dream, Taproot's artsy aesthetic makes it a favorite for Salem's creative crowd.

Good for: Big group hangouts, meetups and, paradoxically, casual laptop scrolling

What to order: Local pint and Samosas ($4.50)

More: Review: Taproot nicely mixes healthy fare, bar food

Happy hour:  3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and the last hour of the night  Tuesdays-Fridays, 2 to 6 p.m. "Hump Day Special" Thursdays

The deal:  Small bites from $3 to $5.50, beer and wine for $4 and a featured cocktail for $6, plus a Thursday "Hump Day Special": pint of beer and chef's choice of appetizer for $5.

The vibe:  ACME's fun Americana decor is thanks to restaurant designer extraordinaire Cecilia Ritter James, which makes it a fun, family-friendly spot for folks of all ages. Summer happy hours are best spent on the patio, however, with a tall drink under a red umbrella.

Good for:  An after-camp treat (the kids can have ice cream while you have an IPA)

What to order:  Roasted tomato basil ceviche ($5.50) and glass of white wine ($4) or buttermilk chicken strips ($5.50) and beer ($4)

If you go:  110 Hansen Ave. S, 503-798-4736

More: Eat or drink outside in Salem at these restaurants

Ritter's Housemade Foods

Happy hour: 3 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays

The deal: Happy hour is the ultimate time to go to Ritter's, because the menu's usual double-digit prices dramatically slide into the single-digit category. Get an individual cheese pizza for $5 or a Caesar for $4. Better yet, pair one of the restaurant's craft cocktails (like the Bangkok, with house-infused Thai chili vodka, ginger and lemon) with a scoop of ice cream for less than $10. Good news, beer and wine fans: Happy hour includes $1 off all beer on tap and $5 glasses of house wine.

The vibe: The restaurant's high ceilings, white-tile walls and black booths give it an upscale vibe, which allows Ritters to walk the line between casual after-work spot and date night treat.

Good for: Out-of-town guests, a fun first date and drinking a fancy cocktail to make Wednesday bearable

What to order:  Brussels Sprouts ($5) and Bangkok ($7) or ice cream ($2.75) and Manhattan ($7)

If you go:  102 Liberty St. NE, suite 100, 503-339-7928

More: Dining Review: Ritter's brings warmth to downtown

Bentley's Grill

Happy hour: 3 to 6 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and 4 to 9 p.m. Sundays

The deal: Bentley's has daily happy hour specials, including ladies night (Wednesday) and Tini Tuesdays.

The vibe: Overlooking downtown in Salem's Grand Hotel, Bentley's does exude hotel bar vibes, with waitstaff in suit and tie, velvet touches and dimmed lighting. Still, Bentley's crowd is a nice mix of ages, as well as a balance of visitors and locals.

Good for: A gussy-yourself-up evening out, especially if you want to impress the wino in your life. Bentley's celebrated wine list is definitely worth a perusal.

What to order: Crab cakes ($6) and glass of white (varies)

If you go:  291 Liberty St. SE, 503-779-1660

More: Bentley's Grill in Salem receives 2016 award from Wine Spectator

Happy hour: 4 to 6 p.m. daily

The deal: $6 for various small plates, including mac n’ cheese fritters in a smoky cheese sauce, pico-topped tacos and calamari with a chipotle dip.

The vibe:  The indoor dining room is hip with high ceilings, vintage ads on the walls and Phoenix on the stereo. But the place to be is the rooftop deck, which opens at 5 p.m.

Good for: Taking out the boss,   business happy hour, soaking up the sun with a glass of rose in-hand

What to order:  Mac n' cheese fritters ($6) and Lucid Dream cocktail ($9, riesling, apricot liqueur, vermouth and absinthe — trust us)

If you go:  500 Liberty St. SE, No. 150, 503-588-3639

More: Taco Tuesdays in Salem: Our favorite deals

Kraftworks Taphouse

Happy hour: 5 to 7 p.m. daily

The deal: Kraftworks offers a variety of discounted items, including cheesy fries, wings, pulled pork sliders and the restaurant's mind-boggling nachos.

The vibe: With one of the later happy hours in town, Kraftworks attracts an eclectic group in its dimly-lit dining room, with walls lined with local art and a back lounge area complete with pinball.

Good for: Casual meet-ups with friends and those nights when you just need to down a pile of nachos

What to order: Wings ($7) and beer or nachos ($10) and a  tequila shot

If you go: 241 Liberty St. NE, 503-339-7757, or message the bar on Facebook

More: Dining Review: Both food, drinks impress at Kraftworks

Wild Pear Restaurant & Catering

Happy hour:  3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays

The deal: Discounted dishes like Vietnamese salmon cakes, lobster melt and Tuscan panzanella pair with $5 house wine or $4 draft beer and cider.

The vibe:  Exceptional service and a diverse menu have made Wild Pear a Salem mainstay for years. Happy hour isn't exactly party central at Wild Pear: Think teatime with more booze.

Good for: Taking Mom out without breaking the bank

What to order: Vietnamese salmon cakes ($8.50) and house white ($5) or a cup of soup du jour ($3.75) and hard cider ($4)

If you go:  372 State St., 503-378-7515

The Best of Salem: A Three Day Itinerary

Explore the must-sees of salem, ma with this three-day itinerary..

Salem is a magical place. It has beautiful architecture and houses from the start of America all the way up to the present day.

No doubt Salem’s claim to fame is largely due to the historic witch trials, but the little town is so much more than that.

Besides the rich history, Salem offers numerous restaurants, bars, and cafés.

If you enjoy the macabre or witchy things this is definitely the place for you. There are plenty of metaphysical shops, psychics, ghost tours and mediums for you to get your fix.

If you are a fashion lover there are several boutiques with adorable and unique clothes.

If you are an art lover, Salem is home to the very first art museum in the United States: the Peabody Essex Museum.

The quaint town has something for everyone.

After visiting, my boyfriend and I absolutely fell in love with this spooky New England town. So much that I plan to make another visit to Salem at some point in my life.

If you’re visiting Salem on as a first-timer or as a returning visitor I’ve compiled the perfect three-day itinerary for you to see and taste the best parts of Salem.

Day 1

Pioneer village.

Head over to the Pioneer Village to get an idea of what life would have been like for the settlers of Salem.

BONUS: this is a film location for the famous movie Hocus Pocus and was the home of Zachary Binx before he was turned into a cat.

When we visited it was rainy and the place was quite run down. But our tour guide was awesome and funny so that made up for the dreary weather.

The Witch House

This is the only standing structure in the present-day that had any ties with the Salem Witch Trials. The home was owned by Judge Jonathan Corwin who investigated the trials.

Dinner at Boston Burger, Howling Wolf Taqueria or Red’s Sandwich Shop

We mostly ate at our Airbnb to save money but there were places I wanted to try if we had more time. These include the Boston Burger Company , Red’s Sandwich Shop , and the Howling Wolf Taqueria .

Evening Walking Tour

Take a walking tour to get acquainted with Salem and an overview of its history.

I did not want to go on a ghost tour or anything super cheesy or touristy so I booked a tour with Hocus Pocus Walking Tours .

I am so glad I did because our guide Susan and her husband were friendly and courteous. They also provided historic information and insight on more than just the witch trials and gave an overall history of the town.

Ice cream at Melt

Seriously, the best ice cream ever and it’s homemade!

Salem’s Maritime Historic Site

This historic site along the harbor features 8 buildings associated with Salems Maritime history as well as the Friendship of Salem which is a replica tall ship.

Jaho Coffee & Wine Bar

This was recommended to us by our tour guide at Pioneer Village and he didn’t disappoint!

This is also right next to the Salem Maritime site.

The coffee was great and I picked up a pastry that was delicious!

BONUS: They have wine…need I say more.

House of Seven Gables

This 17th-century house was made famous from the National Hawthorne novel “The House of the Seven Gables (also conveniently located near the Salem Maritime Historic Site).

The house was built in 1668 for Captain John Turner I, the head of one of the most successful maritime families in the New England colonies

Also on the property are other homes that range from the 17th – 19th centuries.

Dinner at a Seafood Place

When you are near the sea you have to eat seafood. We ate at Sea Level Oyster Bar and it was good. But we were told by our walking tour guides that Turners is the best seafood in Salem. Next time that is where we will be heading.

Salem Willows Park & Arcade

Head over to Salem’s front park and hit the arcade. This is a decent-sized arcade and the prices were fair. They also have pizza, popcorn and ice cream on-site.

You can also take a walk through the park and head out to the pier.

Day 3

Ugly mug diner.

This was the BEST BREAKFAST I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!! Really, I mean it. It was packed so prepare to wait. Also, the coffee was so good I started ordering it and shipping it to my home in Pennsylvania. You can order it from Atomic Coffee here.

Peabody Essex Museum

I have to admit that I did not get a chance to go to the museum when I visited, but I really wanted to! I am an art nerd so this is right up my alley but alas I didn’t have time.

Walk the Salem Heritage Trail and Do Some Shopping

I like walking and window shopping so between the consistent rain during our stay we did walk through the town a little bit.

I didn’t get to do as much shopping as I wanted to but I didn’t find a unique top at a boutique that I really like.

Other Things To Do…That I Didn’t Get Time For

Of course, there are other things I didn’t get to do while I was in Salem besides more food and visiting the Peabody. Hopefully next time I can get to some of these but in the meantime, YOU can check them out on your trip!

Schooner FAME Boat Ride

Take a boat ride on an 1812 pirate schooner replica. Really bummed I missed this one too since I am such a history nerd.

Ropes Mansion Tour

Another Hocus Pocus film location. This was Allison’s house in the movie. I didn’t make it to the mansion because they have limited tour schedules.

The Pickering House

If you haven’t guessed by now I really love house tours so this is one I wouldn’t mind checking out.

See a Psychic

I am ashamed to say that while I was in the Witch City I didn’t see a single psychic or Tarot reader. This is one I regret and will not miss if I get another chance.

The Black Veil Studio of Tattoo & Art

I found this shop on Instagram and was blown away by how talented these artists are! You do have to schedule in advance which is why I didn’t get a chance to get some ink done.

The Satanic Temple

I know this isn’t for everyone, but if you have an open mind the Satanic Temple has an art gallery and a huge life-size statue of Baphomet that you can sit on for some wicked photo ops

Tourist Trap and Spooky Tacky Attraction Warning

Word to the wise…there were a lot of what I would say tourist traps and cheesy attractions/tours in Salem. In my opinion, there are more tacky tourist traps than legitimate attractions so just because of not wasting money or time on these.

Let me know what you think of these tops spots in Salem in the comments below.

Till next time,

Rachel

Everyone Is Rich, No One Is Happy. The Pro Golf Drama Is Back (Correct)

By Alan Shipnuck

On the morning of March 18, 2024, a Cessna 750 Citation X departed from St. Augustine, Florida, carrying professional golfers from the PGA Tour to a summit in Nassau, Bahamas. This meeting was a key development in the battle between the Tour and its insurgent challenger, LIV Golf . The tour wars had spilled from the sports page to the business page to the front page because of a juicy mix of geopolitics, cartoonish money, courtroom battles, brand-name protagonists and high-profile trash-talking on Capitol Hill.

Awaiting the Citation’s arrival was probably the most powerful man on the planet who’s not a ...
