editors tour review 2023

Editors, The KVB

Editors, the kvb @ rock city, nottingham, uk, 25th january, 2023,.

With a back catalogue consisting of seven critically acclaimed albums recorded and released over the best part of two decades, Editors have become something of a British institution. Arguably one of the most consistent bands of the 21st century, both in the studio and live. Editors continued success is testament to them never standing still or repeating the same formula twice. Instead, they’ve continually challenged both themselves and their audience with new ideas and sonics culminating in last year’s seventh long player EBM .

Editors

So it’s perhaps no surprise that they’ve chosen another band also constantly evolving to open for them on this tour in The KVB . Although not exactly a new band in the most pedantic sense of the word, The KVB have come a long way since 2011’s Into The Night EP introduced them to an unsuspecting music world. The duo - keyboard player Kat Day and guitarist Nicholas Wood - initially made their names on the psychedelic rock scene and its this grounding that’s honed their stage show into becoming one of the most compact and efficient on the UK live circuit right now. Playing to a backdrop of elegant and colourful visuals for which Day is also responsible, they’re an exciting proposition even at this teatime hour on a Wednesday evening. Taking influence from the likes of Suicide, ( Recurring era) Spacemen 3 and OMD among others, The KVB transgress both guitar and electronic environments with consummate ease. While the likes of “Sunrise Over Concrete” and “Unité” off most recent album Unity blend well with the likes of “Always Then”, the title track of 2012’s debut. Its the pulsating “World On Fire” that sets the tone for the set and ultimately ends up stealing the show. While half an hour isn’t necessarily long enough for The KVB to unleash the full potential of the repertoire, it’s an appetising taster for anyone previously unaware of their output.

The KVB

For Editors, Nottingham has become something of a second home over the years, and in particular Rock City. So, it goes without saying tonight’s show was completely sold out long before this evening. Having progressed and developed their sound fusing more experimental electronic influences, it makes for an interesting setlist hearing the band position the old with the new and vice versa. Last year’s Blanck Mass collaboration EBM saw them fully embrace the techno and industrial overtures that had permeated many of their previous works so the album was heavily represented here, with seven of the record’s nine songs appearing in the setlist.

Editors

The dramatic couplet of “Heart Attack” and “Strawberry Lemonade” make for a powerful opening gambit in a live setting, aided and abetted by former single “Karma Climb” which is the closest Editors have come in recent years to bridging the gap between old and new. “Kiss” and “Strange Intimacy” make welcome appearances towards the tail end of the set while “Silence” picks up the pace once more after Tom Smith’s soothing solo segment that sees “Nothing” off 2013’s The Weight of Your Love and “Lights” off 2005 debut The Back Room receive the acoustic treatment. Meanwhile, “Picturesque” stands admirably in the set before paving the way for a rarely aired rendition of “The Boxer” off 2009’s In This Light And On This Evening that ensures said album is revisited by yours truly later in the week.

The KVB

One thing Editors possess in abundance are big hits that stand the test of time so while the likes of “Blood” and “Smokers Outside The Hospital” are casually despatched to the delight of all and sundry, its two of their earliest compositions that really bring the house down. Both “Fingers In The Factories” and “Bullets” still sound as fresh and invigorating today as they did some seventeen years ago, taking this listener back to July 2005 and Nottingham Trent University where Editors shared a stage with the late, lamented ¡Forward, Russia!

Editors setlist

“Violence” and “No Harm” both raise the dramatic element tenfold, the former’s brooding intensity providing a perfect gateway into the latter’s defiant lament. Saving the biggest guns for the encore, “An End Has A Start” and “Munich” are post-punk perfection before a triumphant “Papillon” brings tonight’s proceedings to a close. It goes without saying Editors are like a fine wine that gets better with age, and with their creative juices still in overdrive one can only behold at what they may deliver in the future.

Editors have announced a new album.

'EBM', the follow-up 2018's 'Violence', is due for release on September 23 via Play It Again Sam. It will be their first with new bandmate Benjamin John Power, aka Blanck Mass. He said:

“There is a strong physicality to this record. EBM started its life with the intention of connecting with people and filling a very physical space. There is also however an emotional physicality running throughout; An urgency and a sense of panic. An unease. Even in its more tender moments there is a yearning for connection.”

The record's title has a double meaning. It's an acronym of Editors and Blanck Mass, as well as a nod to Electronic Body Music, a genre that developed in the 1980s in Western Europe and largely influenced the band's new material.

Following a summer of festival appearances in the UK and Europe, Editors will support the record with a newly announced European tour in October, then a UK and Ireland tour in early 2023. Tickets go on general sale at 10am local time on June 10.

Meanwhile, head below to check out the record's artwork, alongside new single Karma Climb, a propulsive, '80s new wave-leaning cut. It follows the first single, Heart Attack , which arrived back in April.

Frontman Tom Smith explains that the new track is "about hedonistic escapism, not only from the world generally, but also from what people think of you.”

It follows the recent release of another new track, Heart Attack, which features the new six-piece Editors, as the band recently added Benjamin John Power aka Blanck Mass to their line-up.

"There is also however an emotional physicality running throughout; An urgency and a sense of panic. An unease. Even in its more tender moments, there is a yearning for connection.”

Editors to close 2023 tour with huge Bristol show

Editors to close 2023 tour with huge Bristol show

The indie-rock titans are embarking on a small-scale tour of the UK and Ireland in January and February.

Birmingham group Editors have revealed a full list of dates for their latest headline tour, which will see them with an appearance at Bristol’s Marble Factory.

Known for their unique blend of pop sensibilities and dark, angular guitar, Editors will be going back on the road in support of their upcoming seventh studio album,  EBM .

Tickets for the Bristol show, which is scheduled for 2 February 2023, go on sale tomorrow (Friday 10 June) and can be found here .

Editors were brought together in 2003 in the midst of the buzzing post-punk revival scene that included contemporaries such as White Lies and Interpol and drew influence from bands Echo & the Bunnymen, Joy Division and many more.

Fronted by the enigmatic Tom Smith (pictured below), the band began to turn heads with a string of promising singles under indie label Kitchenware as well as a standout performance at Glastonbury in 2005.

Their eagerly-anticipated debut  The Back Room  was released in the same year with the single ‘Munich’ entering the UK top 5 and going platinum, and the album ultimately earning a Mercury Prize nomination.

editors tour review 2023

An End Has a Start , Editors’ sophomore LP, again earned platinum sales and saw the band embark on a mammoth run of shows over the next two years, including a European tour with US giants R.E.M.

In the following years, Editors began to experiment with genre a great deal more. The band’s next record,  In This Light and on This Evening  (2009), debuted a brand-new electronic sound and  The Weight of Your Love  (2013) proved far more ambitious brand of stadium rock.

2015’s self-produced fifth record,  In Dream , was followed by  Violence  in 2018. The group’s seventh album,  EBM  (see album art below), was announced earlier this week.

It will be the first full-length release to feature new member Benjamin John Power and is set to be released on 23 September.

Early next year, Editors will head out on a UK and Ireland tour, beginning at Nottingham’s Rock City in January 2023 and visiting Manchester, Glasgow, Dublin and London before culminating at The Marble Factory, an expansive warehouse space located within the sprawling Motion complex.

The Bristol show will take place on 2 February and tickets go on sale tomorrow - find out more and get yours  here .

Editors Announce 2024 UK Tour Dates

editors tour review 2023

ANNOUNCE 2024 UK TOUR DATES

TICKETS AVAILABLE FROM 10AM ON THURSDAY 14TH DECEMBER  HERE

Editors  today announce a six date UK tour for February and March 2024, which will see them play shows in  Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool, Bath, Birmingham  and  Southampton . Tickets will be on sale from 10am on Thursday 14th December  here .

The dates will see them play tracks from their acclaimed seventh studio album  EBM , out now via  Play It Again Sam , as well as their celebrated catalogue. The 9 track LP is their first with latest band member Benjamin John Power, aka Ivor Novello winning producer and composer  Blanck Mass , and marks the latest chapter in Editor’s ever-evolving story.

A band who have never stood still creatively,  EBM  is a breathlessly heavy step up and Editors’ most leftfield material yet – a thrilling, unrelenting thrust of full-bodied electro-industrial rock. The album title is an acronym of Editors and Blanck Mass but also a knowing reference to Electronic Body Music, the potent sound that originated in the 1980s and which has hugely influenced Editors’ new material, where the synths of bands like Nitzer Ebb, Front 242 and DAF hammer darkly amongst smoke machines, strobe lights and the smell of leather.

EBM  kicks off the next era of one of the UK’s most intriguing and enduring musical success stories. All 6 of  Editors’  studio albums over their 17 year career have charted in the UK top 10, with 2 scoring number 1’s, and their debut,  The Back Room , being shortlisted for the  Mercury Prize . 2020 saw them play their biggest UK headline show to date at  OVO Arena ,  Wembley , signalling their ever-growing audience. Their successes have been just as impressive across the channel, regularly selling out tours and headlining festivals throughout Europe and beyond. Arguably the key to their longevity is their ability to consistently evolve their sound, whilst remaining uncompromising in their vision. This next chapter proves Editors are continuing the trend.

The new dates follow Editors European tour earlier this year, which included 7 shows in the UK and Ireland, including London’s iconic  Troxy .

EBM  is out now via Play It Again Sam on Digital / 2LP / CD / Cassette – listen  here

Review: The Nissan Patrol Warrior Is An Armada On Off-Road Steroids

The flagship Patrol Warrior has a thunderous 5.6-liter V8, an engine the Toyota LC300 Land Cruiser can't match

editors tour review 2023

The Nissan Patrol, much like its North American counterpart, the Armada, is showing its age. Both vehicles have been around for quite some time. Introduced in early 2010, the Patrol has received a couple of facelifts over the years but remains largely unchanged. This begs the question: in a world of constantly evolving automotive technology and consumer preferences, why are we taking the time to review an aging SUV?

Well, as you can see from the photos, the Patrol you’re observing isn’t your run-of-the-mill model. This is the Patrol Warrior, a special edition conceived exclusively for the Australian market. It’s designed to enhance the Patrol’s already impressive off-road chops and brings with it a host of mechanical upgrades and visual tweaks.

Review: Europe’s New 2024 VW Tiguan Thinks It’s Wolfsburg’s BMW X1

Like the Nissan Navara Pro-4X Warrior that we drove a couple of years ago, the Patrol Warrior has not been modified by Nissan itself. It has been built by Premcar, an Australian engineering firm, and then delivered to Nissan dealerships.

What Premcar accomplished with the Navara was undeniably impressive, but it’s worth noting that the Navara is much newer than the Patrol, providing the company with a more contemporary foundation to work from. The question now is: has Premcar achieved a similarly feat with the Patrol Warrior? Let’s dive in and find out.

Quick Facts

Premcar’s upgrades start with the suspension. The ride height has been jacked up by 29 mm (1.1 inches) and the company has bolted on a set of distinctive 18-inch wheels wrapped in Yokohama G015 295/70 All-Terrain tires. In addition, the Patrol includes a re-engineered Hydraulic Body Motion Control system, re-developed front springs, new multi-rate rear springs, progressive rate rear bump-stops, and rebuilt dampers.

It now sits 50 mm (1.9 inches) higher than a standard Patrol and has a 40-degree approach angle and a 23.3-degree departure angle.

Review: The Nissan Patrol Warrior Is An Armada On Off-Road Steroids

The modifications don’t stop there. Premcar has also installed a new front bumper, a red bash plate, black fender flares, new recovery points, side steps, a black grille, and some Warrior decals. These changes have a huge impact on the vehicle’s road presence, making it stand out from not only lesser Patrol variants but also its rivals, like the Toyota Land Cruiser LC300.

One of the most distinctive features of the Patrol is its 5.6-liter naturally-aspirated V8 and with the Land Cruiser no longer available with eight-cylinders, this engine gives the Nissan a unique appeal. Premcar has set out to make the most of this 5.6-liter mill and developed a bi-modal exhaust for it with side-exit pipes. Rounding out the upgrades is some Alcantara trim across the dashboard.

A real show-stopper.

When approaching the Patrol Warrior for the first time, I was immediately struck by the sheer size of the thing. It is an absolute behemoth and is one of just a handful of vehicles sold in Australia with eight seats that isn’t a minivan. After clambering inside, I was confronted with one of the most outdated interiors of any new vehicle on sale.

Review: The Nissan Patrol Warrior Is An Armada On Off-Road Steroids

While Nissan has facelifted the Patrol twice, its updates have focused almost exclusively on the exterior. In some markets, like the Middle East, the Patrol’s second facelift brought with it the updated dashboard and screen of the U.S.-spec Armada but such changes have not been made to the Australian model. Its cabin is almost identical to what it was 14 years ago.

The steering wheel is big and while it looks outdated, the buttons on it are easy to operate while on the move. The traditional gauge cluster also feels old compared to the digital panels that are common nowadays but again, it is functional and gives you all the information you need. The same cannot be said about the infotainment display.

First Drive: 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Is The 4-Runner For Grown Ups

Found in the center of the dash is an 8.0-inch display. It is small by modern standards and runs ancient software that is basic and has aged poorly over the years. Sure, it comes with satellite navigation as standard but this system is laggy, unrefined, and low-quality. The Patrol Warrior is also the first car we have driven in recent years that does not have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Thankfully, the 2024 update includes both.

The rest of the dash also feels quite old, due primarily to the presence of a CD player and some rather ugly plastic buttons and knobs. The rest of the Patrol Warrior’s cabin is nice and offers lots of room.

As you would expect for a vehicle of this size, the second row is extremely spacious and the lack of an overly-intrusive transmission tunnel means sitting in the second-row middle seat isn’t a burden. The third row also has three seats and while they are small, they are large enough for children and teenagers. These seats can also fold flat while the second row can fold forward, giving the Patrol a massive 2,623 liters (92.6 cubic-feet) of cargo carrying capacity.

More: Nissan Exec Boldly Claims 2025 Armada Will Be “Much Better” Than Toyota Land Cruiser

A busy schedule during our week with the Patrol Warrior meant we were unable to test it in its natural environment: along off-road trails. As such, our driving impressions were limited to on-road use. We will endeavor to pick up the keys to a 2024 Patrol Warrior soon to take it off-roading.

A monster for the road .

The experience of driving the Patrol Warrior is dominated by the 5.6-liter naturally-aspirated V8. This engine delivers a considerable 298 kW (400 hp) at 5,800 rpm and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm. While that torque figure is down on the 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of the Land Cruiser LC300 with its 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged diesel V8, the Patrol has a full 71 kW (95 hp) of extra power. Coupled with this engine is a seven-speed torque-converter automatic transmission and a low-range transfer case.

Review: The Nissan Patrol Warrior Is An Armada On Off-Road Steroids

This engine delivers an intoxicating soundtrack in the regular model and this has been amplified in the Warrior with the new exhaust. The valves to the side-exiting pipes only open up once you build the revs but when it fires into life, it delivers a thunderous soundtrack that will wake up your entire neighborhood. The thrill of a big-capacity V8 like this never gets old and with fewer vehicles sporting big engines, it gives the Patrol Warrior an appeal that its rivals can’t match.

Having a big engine driving a vehicle weighing 2,884 kg (6,358 lbs) has one big downside: fuel economy. Nissan says the Patrol Warrior drinks down 14.4 l/100 km (16.3 U.S. mpg) but during our time with it, we averaged 16.5 l/100 km (14.2 U.S. mpg) and that was doing primarily long highway stints when the engine should have been operating at its most efficient. Buyers should be prepared for some eye-watering fuel bills, then.

The seven-speed transmission is on the lazy side but we wouldn’t label it a slush box. It shifts slowly between gears but importantly, remains smooth at all times.

Review: The Nissan Patrol Warrior Is An Armada On Off-Road Steroids

Photo Brad Anderson/Carscoops

Premcar has done a good job of ensuring the Warrior remains comfortable when driven on the road, even though it yearns to climb over rocks and speed through rivers. Sure, it can be a little floaty at high speeds, but it is extraordinarily comfortable and compliant during everyday driving duties, which is not something we were expecting.

As the Warrior is based on the Patrol Ti, it comes well-equipped from the factory. Key standard features include a six-speaker sound system, tri-zone climate control, leather upholstery, tire pressure monitoring, hill descent control, and a rear differential lock. There is also radar cruise control and a lane-keeping assist system that works well.

An update for 2024

Review: The Nissan Patrol Warrior Is An Armada On Off-Road Steroids

The 2024 Nissan Patrol’s interior with the aftermarket infotainment system (Photos Nissan)

In the time between testing the Patrol Warrior and writing this review, Nissan Australia has launched tweaked versions of both the standard Patrol and the Warrior. All 2024MY examples now come equipped with an aftermarket headunit that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, fixing one of our complaints about the 4×4.

Verdict: A compelling option, despite its age.

While the Nissan Patrol is old, the upgrades that Premcar has made to it add to its appeal and it is a solid option for those looking for an eight-seater that can tow, thrill drivers, and conquer difficult off-road trails. If you can find an outgoing 2023 model on sale or can wait for the 2024 version to reach showrooms, it could be a good buy.

Rolling Stones Kick-Start ‘Hackney Diamonds’ Tour With Thrilling Houston Concert

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Over the past couple of decades, the Rolling Stones have looked for any reason to hit the road besides the release of a new album of original songs. They’ve launched tours celebrating their 50th anniversary, reissues of select archival records, the 2016 covers LP Blue & Lonesome , and their 60th anniversary. Some years they headed out on the stadium circuit for no particular reason whatsoever, knowing a Stones tour is a major event in and of itself.

The first step was Houston’s NRG Stadium on Sunday night. After a strong opening set by Gary Clark Jr. that centered around his new LP, JPEG Raw , the band took the stage to the familiar opening notes of “Start Me Up.” This is the first time Mick Jagger has faced a stadium crowd since his 80th birthday last year, but his voice and body seem like they stopped aging sometime around Steel Wheels . It’s almost impossible to fully believe until you see it in person. (“People say Joe Biden is too old to be president,” an elderly woman behind me said early in the night. “They need to look at Mick!”)

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

He wasn’t kidding. The 1965 Aftermath track wasn’t played live once until their 2022 European tour, and this was the first time it crossed the Atlantic. But it’s not something you hear much on classic rock radio, and the audience reaction was pretty muted at first. “I don’t think you really knew it,” Jagger said at the end. “But you got to know it as it went along.”

The Hackney Diamonds portion of the evening began at this point with leadoff single “Angry,” which popped onstage much like it did during their surprise album release show at the New York club Racket last year. “Beast of Burden” won the fan vote for the night, and it provided veteran backup Stones singer Bernard Fowler with a much-deserved spotlight moment. “You’ve got one more vote in November,” Jagger said. “Don’t forget to vote then too. What to play now? Something old … something new.”

At the midway point of every Rolling Stones concert in recent memory, Jagger introduces the band one by one before heading offstage so Keith Richards can sing a couple of songs. For some reason, perhaps to squeeze more new songs into the set without cutting any of the standards, Richards was limited to just a single tune. He made it count by singing 1981’s “Little T & A” for the first time since 2016, though it was disappointing he didn’t get a chance to break out “Tell Me Straight” from Hackney Diamonds . It feels inevitable that’ll happen before this tour ends.

Jagger returned for “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Gimme Shelter,” which gave new background singer Chanel Haynes a chance to emerge from the wings and show off her stunning pipes. She first entered Stones World in 2022 when Sasha Allen, their previous background singer, couldn’t make a Milan show. Haynes was playing the lead role in the West End musical Tina at the time, and she parachuted in at the last second to save the show. This frustrated the producers of Tina , who fired her for handing the show off to her understudy that night when she wasn’t ill, but it impressed the Stones enough to hire her for this tour.

The main set wrapped up with “Honky Tonk Women,” “Miss You,” “Paint It Black,” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” These are songs they’ve done hundreds and hundreds of times for good reason. The hardcores may yearn for deeper cuts like “Memory Motel” or “Moonlight Mile,” but Jagger knows they’d cause many people to sit down and start scrolling through Instagram. And when you have a song like “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” in your repertoire, you simply have to play it every time you do a gig.

“Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” one of the finest songs on Hackney Diamonds , kicked off the brief encore set. If it wasn’t challenging enough to channel Merry Clayton a few songs back, Haynes had to now deliver Lady Gaga’s soaring vocal parts from the original recording. Unsurprisingly, she crushed it. For a moment, it really felt like witnessing a scene from some alternate-universe version of A Star Is Born.

The night closed out with a joyous “Satisfaction,” meaning they played just three songs from Hackney Diamonds. That’s typical for a tour in support of a latter-day Rolling Stones album, but this one really deserved more. They dropped “Midnight Rambler,” one of the Richards songs, and the acoustic set to make room for the three new ones in the show, but it be worth further restructuring to squeeze in “Whole Wide World,” “Bite My Head Off,” and “Tell Me Straight.” These are stellar songs that deserve a spot in the set, even if it means tossing aside “Paint It Black” or “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” sometimes.

The band’s 60th anniversary tour in 2022 seemed like it could be the end of the Rolling Stones saga, but we’re somehow now living through an entirely new era of their history. They even have a bunch of outtakes from Hackney Diamonds that they hope to release on a follow-up album. Whatever happens, they’re now in completely uncharted waters for a rock & roll band. It’s thrilling to witness.
