Hotels varied but two were excellent. Hotel Gaudi and Pazo Sedor . One was bad Lar do Peregrino. Three elderly members of the party, one injured wanted to enter the hostel early. The woman refused them entry until 2p.m. there was noone else there and on entry the common room and kitchen were closed. Explore should think seriously about not using this hostel again.

Camino - Leon to Santiago Tour

Camino - Leon to Santiago

I walked the Camino de Santiago from Leon to Santiago and it was amongst the most memorable travel experiences of my life. Lovely hotel accommodations, friendly staff and some of the most beautiful scenery that Spain has to offer made this truly special. For anyone who enjoys serious walks this should be on your short-list. I would absolutely look forward to doing it again.

Cycling the Camino de Santiago - Roncesvalles to Santiago Tour

Cycling the Camino de Santiago - Roncesvalles to Santiago

We have just completed cycling the Camino de Santiago (Roncesvalles to Santiago) with "ExperiencePlus!" bike tours. It was truly memorable experience. Our guides brought a myriad of talents, language skills and good humour to our trip. The "plus" was, in large part, the cultural component. Thanks to the knowledge of our guides and their eagerness to share their love of the Camino, we gained an appreciation of the history of the route and the pilgrims (past and present) who have made the journey. On a practical note, the accommodation was the best available - keeping in mind that this is a 'pilgrim's route. This comment is not meant as a negative . All of the accommodation provided a welcome respite after a long day of cycling. The food and wine (chosen by our guides) were wonderful and a provided delightful introduction to the cuisine of northern Spain. On a more practical note, the bicycles and van support (including water and snacks en route) were excellent. The guides went "above and beyond" to ensure that we had no difficulty in moving forward! The "chalk arrows" were an added bonus - all we had to do was concentrate on cycling and the breathtaking scenery. This was our sixth trip with ExperiencePlus!. We are looking forward to our seventh.

Best of the Spanish Camino Tour

Best of the Spanish Camino

Great tour, excellent support. Fantastic tour leader and driver (Emilio) - very attentive to individual needs and both went beyond the call of duty to assist people in need. The itinerary allowed you to get a real feel for the Camino, without having to walk tedious distances through boring exposed countryside or industrial areas on the outskirts of towns. Accommodation was also varied, from 4 star in larger towns, to no star in a rural setting (but the views and atmosphere were sufficient to outweigh any perceived disadvantage and the room had all basic facilities, whilst the food was terrific). I don't know why the hotel in Santiago only has 2 stars: there may have been only basic body gel and shampoo, but the rooms were very spacious, it had a 24/7 dining area where you could get tea/coffee/juice/water and fruit, or make a sandwich, which was fantastic for early departures or just after a long day. The staff on reception were also very helpful.

What people love about camino de santiago tours.

Our guide got us safely to Santiago which was a big part of his job. We had a nice group of people on our tour. The leader had good recommendations for restaurants and city tours. However, the guide was very impatient with me when my backpack was missing, and I only found my pack due to my air tags. Gadventures was responsible for moving my pack during the day so I am not sure about the reason for the impatience.
Matched me with G tours. Everyone followed up, made changes as needed & worked well together.

Walk the Camino de Santiago

7 days | embark on europe’s greatest pilgrimage.

Group hike of pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago, Spain

Whether you’re looking for a cultural odyssey, physical challenge, religious pilgrimage or to meet interesting travel companions, walking the Camino de Santiago is sure to be a life-affirming and personally enriching adventure. Over seven days, undertake a journey along the final 100km of Spain’s Camino de Santiago, travelling with a small group of likeminded travellers and a local leader to add a deeper layer to your discoveries. Follow in the footsteps of ancient pilgrims as you walk through beautiful Galician countryside, passing quaint hamlets, roman ruins and stilted horreos. The feeling of arriving at the finishing point in Santiago de Compostela simply can’t be beat.

Trip overview

  • Walk the final 100km of the iconic Camino de Santiago with a local leader to provide historical context and add a deeper layer of understanding to your discoveries.
  • Uncover scenes of the real Galicia as you walk through traditional countryside, quaint hamlets, ancient bridges, roman ruins and beautifully preserved horreos on stilts.
  • Fuel your journey with unique Galician specialties, including traditional polbo a feira octopus in Melide and world-renowned cheese in Arzua.
  • Take a load off – literally! Your luggage will be transferred between your accommodation each day, meaning you’ll only have to carry a day pack, and your luggage will be waiting at your hotel.
  • Take a sip of Galicia’s Celtic history as your leader shows you how to make the traditional and mythical Queimada drink – prepare for a fiery show!
  • Feel an unbeatable sense of accomplishment as you complete your journey in the fascinating ancient city of Santiago de Compostela and collect your Camino certificate.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll learn about our Intrepid Foundation partner, Open Arms. Donations help them safeguard the physical integrity and rights of migrant people in imminent danger who have fled their homes across the Mediterranean Sea. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
  • This trip involves plenty of walking and is best suited to travellers with a good level of mobility. Good footwear is a must.
  • There will be some long walking days and we recommend reading descriptions of all walks carefully. Your longest walking day is 29km, but there will be the option to take a taxi to shorten the walking distance.
  • During your trip you will visit numerous religious sites. You will need to bring clothes that cover the shoulders and knees. A light scarf is a good idea for covering shoulders and arms when it’s hot. Your leader will be able to advise when such clothing is necessary.
  • On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15kg / 33lb. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for day trips.

Welcome to Spain! Your adventure begins in Sarria in the Galicia region of northwest Spain. This autonomous corner of the country has its own language, cuisine and culture, distinct from the rest of Spain, but is perhaps most famous for being the home of Santiago de Compostela, the finishing point of the Camino de Santiago. Over the next week you will be walking the final 100km of this iconic and world-renowned pilgrimage. A meeting will take place at 6pm this evening where you’ll meet up with your local leader and small group of fellow travellers joining you on your journey. After your meeting collect your 'Pilgrim's Passport' then perhaps head out to a local restaurant for your first foray into the exciting world of Galician cuisine.

  • Santiago de Compostela - Pilgrim passport collection

Today is a gentle introduction to the Camino de Santiago – it’s all about finding your feet, so be sure to take your time and pause to enjoy your scenic surroundings. Have your pilgrim passport handy as you will be getting this stamped at least twice a day throughout your journey. Kicking off from Sarria, walk a mostly asphalt path through beautiful countryside, passing forests of chestnut and oak trees, small farms, villages and wheat fields. You may like to stop for a breather at the Santiago de Barbadelo or the church of San Fiz de Reimondez – your leader will be on hand to share historical facts and interesting tidbits about the highlights you pass on your journey. Some of the little farms you pass will be selling lovely fresh produce like jams, bread and cheeses – perfect snacks to keep you going! After around 4.5 hours of walking (excluding stops) finish up for the day in the delightful town of Portomarin. An excellent spot to recharge your batteries, the town features an inviting array of restaurants and lovely views of the Embalse de Belesar lake. When the town was flooded by the creation of the Belesar reservoir, they dismantled the town’s historic buildings and rebuilt them on higher ground, so they can still be admired today.

  • Camino de Santiago - Sarria to Portomarin guided walk

Today’s walking distance is 22km, taking approximately 5-6 hours (excluding stops).

Starting from Portomarin, much of today’s route is along a gravel path alongside the road with little traffic, often cutting through gorgeous Galician forests and fields. Walk through the rural Monterroso region and pass by the little villages of Gonzar, Ligonde and Castromaior – a slight detour from the latter will take you to the impressive Roman ruins of Castro de Castromaior. There will be stalls along the way selling fruit, snacks and cold drinks, plus plenty of places to stop for a sit-down meal or a coffee. Around halfway, climb a gradual hill to Sierra de Ligonde, followed by a gentle descent. Today’s walk wraps up in Palas de Rei, an interesting town dotted with historical buildings and Romanesque architecture. This evening, prepare for a real treat as you get up close and personal with one of Galicia’s most mystical and celebrated specialties. The Queimada, or “fire drink” has its roots in Galicia’s Celtic past, and is made with the liqueur oruju, lemon, and coffee beans, which is then set alight and said to ward off evil spirits. Not only is the result delicious, watching it come together is quite the show! Your leader will make this exciting drink for the group tonight, ensuring you won’t be bothered by any evil spirits for the rest of your journey!

  • Camino de Santiago - Portomarin to Palas de Rei guided walk
  • Castromaior - Roman ruins of Castro de Castromaior visit
  • Palas de Rei - Queimada drink preparation & tasting

Today’s walking distance is 25km, taking approximately 5-6 hours (excluding stops).

Get ready for your longest day on this stretch of the Camino de Santiago, covering the distance from Palas de Rei to Arzua. Today’s terrain is undulating asphalt, so prepare for some ups and downs. First, walk to the town of Melide – home to around 9000 people, this is one of the most populated spots on your journey. Melide is renowned for its fantastic food, specialising in polbo a feira, a flavoursome octopus dish. You and your group will gather together in Melide to tuck into a traditional polbo a feira lunch, which you may like to follow up with some melindres, mini glazed donuts popular in Melide. For those who wish to give their legs a rest, you’ll have the option to catch a taxi to Arzua, otherwise hit the road and continue the final stretch of today’s journey, crossing the Iso River and navigating a series of short but steep slopes. On arrival in Arzua, be sure to ask your leader about the revered cheese made in this region – definitely a must-try while here!

  • Camino de Santiago - Palas de Rei to Arzúa guided walk

Today’s walking distance is 29km, taking approximately 6-7 hours (excluding stops).

Depart Arzua and reach a split in the path, where the right follows the main road, and the left cuts through shady forest. As the saying goes, the road less travelled is often the most rewarding, so veer left and enjoy a day of peaceful strolling, mostly through endearing forests and past little villages and farms – this is some of the most wonderful scenery on the whole Camino de Santiago. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants along the way to stop and fuel up. As you draw closer to O Pedrouzo, your base for evening, pass by the Fountain of Santa Irene, the water from which was said to cure diseases of crops and illnesses of children.

  • Pension (1 night)
  • Camino de Santiago - Arzúa to O Pedrouzo guided walk

Today’s walking distance is 20km, taking approximately 5 hours (excluding stops).

Gear up for your final day of walking, conquering the leg between O Pedrouzo to Santiago de Compostela, with each step taking you closer to the awe-inspiring Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Begin by walking through dense green forest – with no cars or houses around, you may like to take this time to quietly reflect on all you’ve achieved over the past week. Next, follow a long stretch of road between Lavacolla and Monte do Gozo, then swap out rural landscapes for urban as you walk the final 5km. Hear the sounds of Galician bagpipes welcoming you to the cathedral, marking the end of your journey along the Camino de Santiago, a truly massive accomplishment. Present your stamped pilgrim passport and receive your Camino certificate, proof that you have walked the 100km to Santiago de Compostela. If you arrive at the cathedral before noon, you can enter and participate in the pilgrims’ mass, where a list of all those who have collected their Camino certificates in the last 24 hours will be read aloud. The group will also pay a visit to the Museum of Pilgrimage to learn about the history of the Camino de Santiago and other places of pilgrimage across the world. This evening, why not treat yourself to a final dinner with the group in town – you’ve earned it!

  • Camino de Santiago - O Pedrouzo to Santiago de Compostela guided walk
  • Santiago de Compostela - Pilgrim's museum visit

With no activities planned for today and the walking done and dusted, your adventure comes to an end after breakfast this morning. If you’d like to extend your stay in Santiago de Compostela, just get in touch ahead of time and we’d be happy to arrange additional accommodation (subject to availability).

Everything You Need to Know to Walk the El Camino

Walking the El Camino de Santiago – The Many Paths of this Pilgrimage

While often walked as a pilgrimage to the Catedral del Santiago , the presumed burial place of St. Jame’s remains, thousands of folks walk the multiple paths or ways to this coastal town for their own personal reasons.  Often they return again and again.  Today I interview Umberto di Venosa of Follow the Camino , a tour company he founded after becoming enamored with the “Way”, and finding no company set up to assist those seeking to walk The El Camino , decided to start one himself.

We learn about the multiple paths that head to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, when to go, who walks the El Camino and why, and what you can expect if you walk the El Camino.   On the many trails, you’ll walk through mountains and villages, mesas and pastures.  You’ll meet fellow pilgrims and make lifelong friends.  You will return home refreshed and renewed from walking this trail famous for replenishing the soul.

What is the El Camino?

The El Camino de Santiago, sometimes called “The Way” , is actually multiple traditional trade route paths used by Christian pilgrims over the centuries who walked to the cathedral in Santiago, Spain to pay homage to St. James, who is believed to be buried there.  This pilgrim’s walk was originally walked to gain a plenary indulgence , or forgiveness or lessening of punishment for a sin.

The most popular path is the “French Way” , which starts in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port on the French side of the Pyrenees.  This almost 500 miles route (769 km) takes most people about four weeks to complete.  The French Way route passes through the major cities of Pamplona, Logrono, Burgos and Leon.  Roughly 60% of pilgrims choose the French Way .

Other popular routes include:

  • The  Portuguese Way is the second most popular path with starting points at Lisbon or Porto.  About 380 mi/610 km.  You can also walk part of the way along the coast, or mix the two paths
  • The North Way also runs through France, but is more challenging as there is more elevation change (the French Way is fairly flat).  You don’t walk though as many historic towns, but if you are walking during the summer, you will appreciate the cooler temperatures.  The path usually begins in Irun or San Sebastian
  • The “Primitive Way†, or original way from Oviedo, Spain has been walked since the 6th century.
  • The Central European Way reopened after the fall of the Berlin Wall and goes through the Baltics

and description of the various paths

Note the shell draped on Janet’s backpack, indicating she is a “Pilgrimâ€

Janet hiked a ‘Half’ camino by walking the last 230 miles into Santiago.  You can listen to my interview with Janet about here Camino HERE .

You are considered a ‘ Pilgrim ‘ if you walk at least the last 100 km, or cycle the last 200 km.  When you complete this, you have earned your Compostela, a Certificate of Completion.

Who walks the El Camino de Santiago?

For more than 1000 years, people of all ages and backgrounds have walked the El Camino.  Traditionally a religious pilgrimage, many folks now camino for personal reasons, almost as a trail of self discovery , as you will have plenty of time for self reflection.  If you are unable to walk, or don’t have the time for a full walking camino, you can also bike or even horseback ride much of the Camino.

The El Camino is also a very sociable path, particularly the busy French Way.  You are likely to make life long friends,

Most pilgrims (you are called a pilgrim whether or not you are walking for religious reasons) tie a scallop shell to their day pack, which tells others that you, too are a pilgrim.  There are multiple theories of the scallop shell symbol.  Regardless of the reason, most tie a shell to their backpack if for no other reason than a souvenier.  The shell is also the symbol used on the El Camino sign posts.

Is the El Camino de Santiago well marked?

Yes!  You will see the ‘shell’ emblem sign posts throughout your journey, indicating which way to go and when to turn.  You are not likely to get lost.

Where To Stay on the El Camino

In the cities and many towns, you can of course stay in traditional inns and hotels, but many pilgrims chose to stay in the ‘Alburques’ or pilgrim’s hostels that are available along the way.  These are of varying quality, available only to pilgrims, and are inexpensive.

While you don’t have to make a reservation, during the summer, it is wise to book at least a day or two in advance to make sure you’ll have a bed and not have to camp on the floor somewhere.  Most hostels, even if full, will try to find you a place to rest your head, but it may not be very comfortable.

Because the quality (cleanliness?) of some of the alburques and inns can vary widely, you may want to use the help of someone who intimately knows the ins and outs of the Way, and the best places to stay for your particular budget.  And if you don’t speak the language, you may find it helpful to have someone arrange your accommodations.

I recommend my affiliate, Follow The Camino , a company that specializes in helping pilgrims plan their journey.   After his own camino, founder Umberto di Venosa started the company because he couldn’t find any companies offering a planning service for this complicated multi-week adventure.   So whether you want to stay in the alburques or nicer inns, Follow the Camino can take care of the logistics of your pilgrimmage so all you have to worry about it walking (or biking).  If you’d rather hike with a guide, they also offer guided tours .

PLAN YOUR TRIP : HELPFUL TOOLS!

Follow the Camino is a Camino tour company that has some great tools to help you plan your own Camino walk that I’ve asked them to share with us:

  • Camino training plans that were designed by physiotherapists: one for walking and one for cycling – these have lovely infographic style printables too!
  • a comprehensive packing list for walking and cycling
  • a guide for choosing the best Camino shoes
  • a guide for choosing the best backpack for you

and our Camino weather map which shows you the average weather at various times of the year for better planning!

When to Walk Your El Camino

The most popular time to walk the El Camino is during the summer time.  You will find the French Way especially busy and may not get your first choice in accommodations if you don’t book far in advance.  It can be VERY hot during the summer.

If you are able, it is better to walk your El Camino during the shoulder  seasons, in the spring and fall.

Note that many alburques and inns along the El Camino are closed from November through April.

Can Someone Transport My Luggage Each Day?

Yes!  There are several companies that can transfer your luggage for you each day.  You will need to know where you’ll be staying ahead of time and have your bag (usually one bag 40kg or less weight) ready by a specific time in the morning (around 8am).  They will send you a luggage tag that identifies your rucksack.  Stick it on your bag and place it where they tell you, and they’ll have at your next lodging by late afternoon!

Be Sure You Know if it’s a Jubilee Year!  2021 is next!

Naturally, because of the connection to St. James, whenever St. James’s Day, July 25th , falls on a Sunday, the cathedral declares a Holy or Jubilee Year . Leap years alter the recurrence, but Holy Years occur in 5, 6 or 11 year intervals.  2021 is the next Holy Year, followed by 2027 and 2032 .

The El Camino is particularly popular during these Holy Years, as the ‘jubilee’ means a universal forgiveness of sins.  If you wish to walk the El Camino during a Jubilee Year, be SURE to book your accommodations well in advance, and expect things to be especially busy!

More Reading

  • A popular book about hiking the El Camino and how it became a journey of self-discovery is by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho, called The Pilgrimage .  While popular, be forewarned that this book is a bit woo-woo, fyi.

The most popular guide book is Brierley’s, A Pilgrim’s Guide to Camino de Santiago.

Where Does the El Camino End?

All of the various routes of the El Camino end in Santiago de Compostela at the Catedral de Compostela ( pictured ).  Most years, you enter through the Plaza of Platerías, unless it is a Holy Year when you have to go through the Puerta Santa.

You’ll no doubt want to spend a few days in Santiago to relax and explore.  Since you are not allowed to bring your backpack into the cathedral, make sure to drop it off at your lodging before to get there.

Most pilgrims try to time their arrival to attend one of the Pilgrim’s Masses, which are celebrated daily at noon and 4:30pm.  In particular, Pilgrims try to arrive on Friday.

On Friday afternoons, you can watch the famous “ Botafumerio †ceremony.  In this ritual, the priests sway a massive thurible with thick ropes through the cathedral while the choir sings and the organ plays.  A thurible is a metal container with mesh holes that release the incense burning inside – see the short video to check it out.  The pulley system that rolls the rope was installed in 1604!  It’s a moving ceremony and fitting conclusion to your Camino.

Also, be sure to climb up to the rooftop to catch the beautiful views of the city!

Highlights Along this Luxury Camino de Santiago

Santiago Old Town A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, Galicia’s capital city Santiago de Compostela is the world-known destination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. Around the Cathedral of Saint James of Compostela, a masterpiece of Romanesque art, the city boasts a picturesque old town worthy of one of Christianity’s greatest holy cities.

Galicia’s waters produce some of the best seafood and fish in the world. Its pastures support beef and dairy herds, so you will find delicious local cuts of meat and cheeses.

When it comes to filling your glass, Galicia produces wonderful reds and whites, fantastically refreshing beers and its signature liquor – Oruzo.

Food & Drink

Every town in the Camino has a variety of lively plazas with bars and restaurants, so there will be plenty of opportunities for you to enjoy the delicious Spanish gastronomy and the variety of world-famous Spanish wines.

This is an area that still preserves a traditional way of life. Galicia is the green corner of Spain and its lush meadows support many family-run dairy and beef farms. Galician cooking is simple and hearty, using mainly fresh local produce.

Those with a sweet tooth will love Tarta de Santiago, a type of almond cake dusted with sugar outlining the shape of the cross of Santiago. A gastronomic point – in Melide look out for the local speciality “Pulpo Gallego” – octopus – sprinkled with paprika and served with potatoes.

The wines, cheeses and seafood are all renowned Galician specialities. Unlike the red wine-producing rest of Spain, Galicia’s climate is better suited to whites. Albariño is a straw-coloured wine with a distinct peach flavour that’s now highly respected outside Spain and the perfect companion to fish and seafood.

ACCESSIBLE SANTIAGO'S WAY

From Galiwonders we want everyone to have the opportunity to do the Camino de Santiago. That’s why we want to use this space to give visibility to the DISCAMINO project.

A non-profit association that “helps people with special needs to fulfill their dream of doing the Camino de Santiago”.

You can contact them directly to check their availability: https://discamino.com

PLANNING THE CAMINO DE SANTIAGO

Planning the Camino de Santiago for the first time can be a somewhat overwhelming experience. Which route do I choose? Do I sleep in a Hotel or Hostel? How many km will I be able to walk per day? What clothes do I wear?… are some of the most frequent questions. Don’t worry. We are here to help you.

Why Walk the Camino de Santiago?

Although at the beginning of the Camino the reason for walking it was always religious, with the passage of time and the popularization of the routes, the Camino became both a cultural and spiritual journey. Today there are many reasons and ways to do it: by bicycle, with your dog , with your family , on foot… For some, it is about getting closer to God. For others, it’s about overcoming a challenge and making the best of it.

The decision to walk this Spanish pilgrimage transcends the ordinary motivation for a long-distance hike. The Camino beckons individuals seeking a profound and transformative experience, blending spiritual discovery, cultural exploration and personal growth.

Advantages of booking an organized Camino de Santiago?

The hotels are already booked.

As we have mentioned before,  the main advantage is that you don’t have to worry about finding accommodation for the night . Moreover, among the documents we send to our clients before the beginning of their trip, there is all the information needed to get to the hotel and to contact with its staff. This can be found in the travel kit that we send by email a month before departure, so that the pilgrims can arrive at their hotel without any problems. Also, we want to remind you that at Galiwonders, we  only work with hotels and guesthouses that offer private rooms with private bathrooms . This will allow you greater comfort and privacy on your arrival.

The Pilgrim’s passport is sent at home

If you decide to travel with us, you won’t have to worry about finding  your pilgrim’s passport  because we will  send it directly to your home  before the start of the trip. Remember to get a stamp every day at the start and end of the stages so that you can get your Compostela at the end of your trip!

You travel lighter

In addition, by organizing  the luggage transfer from one stage to another , guests can leave their backpacks at the reception in the morning of their departure and find them at the next hotel after their arrival. This service is very appreciated by those pilgrims who travel 20 or 30 km, because they can thus enjoy a more pleasant experience. The only weight you will have to carry will be a small backpack in which you can take a bottle of water, some snacks and personal items.  Nothing to do with the backpack in which we put everything necessary for the trip .

24h assistance

One of the services that we offer, as Travel Agency of the Way of Saint James, is the possibility of calling  our emergency number, active 24/7.  This phone is available  t o solve problems that have occurred along the way   or to help pilgrims in difficulty (for example, if they are injured). This allows, especially those pilgrims who are making the journey for the first time or who are traveling alone, to feel safer and more confident before the start of their journey.

Saving time

As you can imagine, if you have everything organized by a Travel Agency of the Camino,  you will have much more time to enjoy the Camino and relax at the end of your day . You don’t have to waste time looking for a hotel, finding a restaurant or consulting a luggage transfer service. You just have to make the most of your experience and spend time with the other pilgrims  in total relaxation .

A path for every age

Although the physical effort is not little, (we consider an average of 20 km per day for about 5 or 6 consecutive days),  most of our pilgrims are retired people . The age is obviously not a limit to walk the Way of Saint James. You just need to be trained to completely enjoy the Way. To ensure maximum comfort to our travelers, we offer transfers from and to the airport, as well as the possibility of choosing a superior hotel to live a trip with all the luxury, or organizing transfers along the way if needed.

Not only that, many  families embark on this adventure with small children , sometimes even with new-born babies. Of course, this can become problematic if not organized in advance and for this reason we are happy to help families create new memories along the way.

Traveling in large groups

If you travel with a group of friends, with a school or your parish , surely the more participants the better, but at the same time finding accommodation for everyone will be more problematic. No doubt that an organized Way of Saint James will help you out! As we said before, some of the routes are very crowded, especially in certain months. Just think that  according to the Pilgrim’s Office in Santiago , in 2019 alone,  189,937 pilgrims walked the French Way ! For this reason, we assure you that it is much better to trust a Travel Agency with previous experience in managing large groups, to book the best facilities.

Tailor made caminos

At Galiwonders, we put our pilgrims at the centre of our business and we really care about their opinion and satisfaction. That’s why we offer  custom made itineraries , where each customer can modify his route as he wish. For example they can change the number of nights, add or take off dinners, split a stage in two, arrange extra transfers, upgrade the accommodation to a superior standard and so on.

Assistance from local professionals

Unlike other companies that offer tours along the Santiago route and are located outside of Spain,  at Galiwonders, we are based in Galicia , the region where most of the routes take place. We personally go and visit the hotels we work with, as well as the other providers along the Way (tour guides, luggage transfer, bars and restaurants, ect.). Moreover, we can recommend you the typical dishes to try, as well as offer you  the best day tours to complete your experience at the end of the Camino . We have more than 4 years of experience in creating routes to both the national and international tourists and we can attend you in the following languages: English, Spanish, Italian and French.

How to start planning your walk on the Camino de Santiago

Choose your route.

The first step to walk the Way of St. James is to choose the route that best suits your preferences and your physical condition. In Spain, there are 49 different itineraries, with the French Way and the Portuguese Way being the most popular. Research the characteristics, landscape and historical significance of each route to find the one that suits you best.

Plan a Detailed Itinerary

Once the route has been chosen, it is essential to draw up a detailed itinerary that includes the daily distances covered, possible rest days and overnight stays. Remember that as a Camino de Santiago Travel Agency we design tailor-made itineraries adapted to your needs, preferences and budget and we book all the services for you.

Obtain a Pilgrim’s Credential

The Pilgrim’s Credential is a passport-like document that you will carry with you while walking the Camino. It serves both as a record of your pilgrimage and as a means to obtain the coveted Compostela at the end. Remember that if you book the Camino de Santiago with Galiwonders, we provide it for free.

Pack Light and Smart

To walk the Camino de Santiago it is important to pack efficiently . Limit yourself to the essentials: a pair of comfortable shoes, clothes suitable for the weather, toiletries and a first aid kid kit. The weight of your backpack should not exceed 10% of your body weight. If you do not want to carry your backpack while walking the Camino de Santiago, you can hire a luggage transfer service between stages.

Walking notes

Equip yourself with reliable navigation tools for walking the Camino. Although trail markers (yellow arrows and scallop shells) are plentiful, having a detailed map can provide additional information. If you book the Camino with Galiwonders, we will provide you with walking notes for your route.

What are the popular routes of the Camino de Santiago?

The French Way and the Portuguese Way are the most popular routes of the Camino de Santiago due to their rich history, varied landscapes, abundance of historical monuments and a well-developed infrastructure that offers a unique accessible pilgrimage experience.

The French Way covers approximately 499 miles from Saint Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela. This route is divided into several stages that are usually completed in about 35 days.

The French Way begins in Saint Jean Pied de Port , France, taking pilgrims through diverse landscapes, from rolling hills to plateaus and lush forests. As they progress, walkers pass through charming villages and towns, immersing themselves in the rich culture and traditions of the region. Other popular starting points of the Camino Francés are: Sarria , Burgos , León and Logroño .

The terrain of the French Way is varied, including stretches of cobblestone paths, country roads and forest roads. Along the way, pilgrims enjoy panoramic views, river crossings and encounters with nature at its finests. The most outstanding sites and monuments of this route are: the Virgin of Biakorri, Santo Domingo de la Calzada, the Romanesque Bridge of Puente de la Reina, Leon’s Cathedral, the Cruz de Hierro, the Templars Castle and the Samos Monastery.

Portuguese Way

The Portuguese Way covers approximately 385 miles from Lisbon and 155 miles from Porto. The route can be completed in about 25 days from Lisbon and 13 days from Porto .

From Lisbon, the Portuguese Way winds through rolling countryside, lush forests and charming villages, providing a unique insight into the cultural richness of Portugal. The route from Porto is notable for its vineyards in the Minho River valley.

The terrain of the Portuguese Way varies from rural trails and secondary roads to stretches of forest and coastal scenery. Along the way, pilgrims can enjoy Portuguese hospitality, explore historic churches and sample delicious local cuisine. The route also offers a mix of urban and rural settings, providing a complete experience. The most outstanding sites and monuments of this route are: the Cathedral of Santa María in Tui , the Gándaras of Budiño, the Sampaio Bridge, the Church of the Virgin of La Peregrina and the Pontecesures Bridge.

How long does it take to walk the Camino?

This is one of the most typical questions among pilgrims. We cannot give a single answer to this, because the duration of the pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago varies depending on several factors . The route chosen is a determining factor, with longer routes. such as the French Way, taking about 34 days to cover some 499 miles, while shorter alternatives, such as the English Way or the Camino de Finisterre, offer faster options. The pace of the walk, detours and side trips, weather conditions and your physical condition also influence the length of the journey.

How many miles is the Camino de Santiago walk?

Like we said before, the miles on the Saint James Walk depend on the specific route chosen.

What is the best time to walk the Camino?

The best time to walk the Camino de Santiago depends on the personal preferences of each pilgrim and their travel conditions. Each season has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Our recommendation is to do the Camino in spring or autumn. On these dates the influx of pilgrims is less than in summer and services are working at full capacity, so finding accommodation and transport should not be a problem. In addition, in these two seasons the weather conditions are more favorable for walking.

How hard is the Camino Walk?

The difficulty of walking the Way of St. James varies based on the chosen route. Some paths face challenging mountainous terrain, while others offer a more leisurely stroll through picturesque landscapes. Assess your physical condition and choose a route that aligns with your fitness level. Regular walking and conditioning exercises can help prepare your body for the journey ahead.

How to train for walking the Camino?

Walking the Camino is a profound adventure that goes beyond a mere walk.  Preparing yourself physically and mentally  is paramount to a successful pilgrimage. Start by walking regularly and gradually increase the distance. Include elevation in your training to prepare for hilly sections. Mental preparation involves accepting the unpredictable nature of the journey and cultivating resilience.

Your travel dates

Most of the tours we organize on the Camino are self-guided. Therefore, dates are flexible. Our recommendation is to book flights first, and then we can adapt the itinerary to the dates. Here are a couple of considerations to keep in mind:

Date and place of the beginning of the Camino:

According to the itineraries we usually organize, the first day is not walking. For example, if you have booked a tour on the last 100 km of the French Way, from Sarria to Santiago, on the first day you will arrive in Sarria, check in at your hotel, and enjoy the day in Sarria. The walk will start on Day 2.

End date of the pilgrimage:

We can consider that there are “two last days”. The last day of trekking, and the last day of the trip. Basically, the last night (in Santiago, if your itinerary ends here) is always included. For example, if you are doing a tour on the Portuguese Camino, your last day of walking would be from Padrón to Santiago de Compostela. You will sleep in Santiago, and check out the next day (last day of the trip). This is a very general description, as most pilgrims choose to add extra nights to their stay in Santiago.

Number of persons and type of room

There are several types of accommodation on the Camino de Santiago: hotels, pensions, rural houses, hostels… The vast majority of our tours include accommodation in a private room with bathroom (except for the. Therefore, we need to know the type of room you wish to book:

Single room:

A single room is for a single person. Most of the time in Spain, there are no single rooms as such. Therefore, what is known as a double room for single use is used. Single rooms usually have a supplement in the price (using a room for two people means sharing costs, hence the final price is cheaper).

A twin room is a double room with two separate beds. If you are traveling with a friend, partner, relative… and you do not want to share a bed, you should ask for this type of room.

Double room:

A double room includes a double bed. Most rooms in Spain are actually twins, with two beds together. But sometimes there are double beds available (less than twins). The distribution of rooms generally takes place on a first-come, first-served basis.

Triple rooms:

Most of the time, triple rooms include three separate beds. The third bed is usually an extra bed. In some cases it is possible to find other types of distributions, such as a double bed and a single bed. If you are going to do the Camino de Santiago with small children, it is possible to ask for a crib.

Camino Santiago tierra

In the hostels the rooms and bathrooms are shared. In this case, you do not actually reserve a room, but a bed. At Galiwonders we only include this type of accommodation in group tours.

About the food

Our tours on the Camino de Santiago normally include half board, what does this mean?

Half board:

If you decide to include half board in your trip, both breakfast and dinner are included in the package. It may appear as “MP”. Half board is usually included during the trek, but not at larger stops (where there is a wide variety of restaurants). For example, as a general rule, dinner is not included in places like Burgos, León, Ponferrada, Sarria or Santiago de Compostela.

Full board:

Full board includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. This is not a very common option on the Camino de Santiago, since normally the meal coincides with walking. From a logistical point of view, it is very complicated to book meals, since it is practically impossible to foresee an exact arrival time. This depends on multiple factors: the speed, whether there are stops, chats with other pilgrims, etc. For this reason, almost all pilgrims stop at places along the Camino to eat. For large groups, there is the option of including a picnic.

Breakfast only:

If you do not want to include dinner, no problem, we can eliminate them. What cannot be eliminated is breakfast, since most of the private accommodations include it as usual with the room, at no extra cost.

Lodging only:

If you are one of those who prefer to stay in Albergues, breakfast is not included (most of these establishments do not offer this service, but the pilgrims themselves prepare it in the common facilities).

Day 1: Depart United States

Make your way to your local airport where you will board your overnight flight(s). Your meals will be served on board.

Day 2: Arrive in Madrid (Tour Day: 2 miles | 3.2 kilometers | 4,500 steps)

Upon arrival in Madrid, you will collect your luggage in the baggage claim area, and continue to the Arrival’s Hall where you will be greeted by your driver. Transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon you will enjoy a short walking tour of Spain’s capital city. There we will celebrate Mass, followed by a tour of the Cathedral. We will continue our walking tour of Madrid to include the exterior of the Royal Palace. Walk through the Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and we make a final stop at the Church of Saint James. Return to your hotel. We will enjoy a nice meal before having a restful overnight in Madrid – our walking begins tomorrow!

Day 3: Madrid - Foncebadon - Iron Cross - O Cebreiro - Sarria (Walking Day: 2.8 miles | 4.5 kilometers | 6,500 steps)

This morning, you will enjoy breakfast and transfer to Sarria. Sarria is located in the northwest of Spain and is noted for being the entry point to the oriental side of the region, Galicia. Your transfer will end and you will begin on foot from Foncebadon. In the eleventh century, this village was a common resting place for pilgrims on El Camino due to its hospitals, hospice, and church. Currently, the structures that have served so many are now in ruins. While in Foncebadon, you will walk to view the “Iron Cross.” This Cross is a common pausing place for pilgrims as they leave a stone at the foot of the cross to symbolize a sin or burden that they are leaving behind. Your tour continues as you leave your burdens behind and continue onward to the village nestled in the mountains, O Cebreiro. Many pilgrims pause at this site due to the Eucharistic Miracle that occurred in the year 1300. Additionally, be sure to have your cameras ready as this village is suspended 1,300 meters in the air and provides a breathtaking panoramic view. Your first walking day culminates with a delicious meal and an overnight in Sarria.

el camino tour company

Day 4: Sarria - Portomarin (Walking Day: 15 miles | 23.5 kilometers | 35,000 steps)

Today is the day that your walking pilgrimage (El Camino) to Santiago de Compostela officially begins! Pick up your Pilgrim Passport and set out for Portomarín. With the guidance of Our Lord, and through the spirit of St. James the apostle, you will become an authentic pilgrim by journeying along the physical road, as well as, the spiritual one. Your first official day of walking will culminate in Portomarin. This town dates back to the Roman Ages and was an important halt along the route in the Middle Ages. Due to the creation of a dam in 1962, the Old Portomarin is currently underneath the Mino River. As a result of the dam creation, many of the old buildings were moved, brick by brick. Among these buildings is the Church of St. John of Jerusalem. In Medieval Times, this church was strategically set along the route of El Camino in order to protect the tomb of Santiago. At Portomarin, you will enjoy dinner followed by an overnight.

el camino tour company

Day 5: Portomarin - Palas de Rei (Walking Day: 16 miles | 25 kilometers | 37,500 steps)

This morning, you will enjoy breakfast at your hotel and journey from Portomarin, through the woods to the Palas de Rei. This was a noteworthy town in the Middle Ages, as it contained a Royal Hospital and the church of St. Tirso. As the rugged walk continues, you will continue through fields, forests, and granaries. Additionally, you will see a prominent characteristic of Galician Landscape, Los Cruceiros. These wayside crosses depict Christ and the Virgin Mary. Dinner and enjoy a restful overnight in Arzua.

el camino tour company

Day 6: Palas de Rei - Arzua (Walking Day: 18.2 miles | 29 kilometers | 44,000 steps)

Breakfast will be served at your hotel. Your pilgrimage continues as you will travel from Palas de Rei to the bustling small town of Arzua. Before arriving in Arzua, your group will stop at Melide. This town is a crucial point of El Camino because it is where the French and Oviedo routes converge. Upon arrival in Melide, you will notice the old roads that date back to the fourteenth century, which are some of the oldest in the region of Galicia. After lunch, you will leave the Lugo province and enter into the province of A Coruna. As your group continues to Arzua, you will cross the beautiful, medieval bridge over the Iso River to Ribadiso. Following your visit to this Chapel, your day will culminate with the arrival in Arzua, where you will enjoy dinner and an overnight.

el camino tour company

Day 7: Arzua (Rest Day: 4.5 miles | 7.2 kilometers | 10,500 steps)

Just like God rested on the seventh day, we will take a break. After Mass, spend time reflecting on your journey so far and enjoy the day in carefree timelessness. Dinner and overnight in Arzúa.

Day 8: Arzua - Arca de O Pino (Walking Day: 14.2 miles | 22.8 kilometers | 33,000 steps)

Your journey is almost over as you walk to the largest community before Santiago, Arca de O Pino! Upon walking this route, you will immerse yourselves in the fragrant eucalyptus groves and experience the breathtaking scenery. At a point throughout your walk, you will stop and enjoy a picnic lunch. Following lunch, you will continue your journey and arrive in Arca de O Pino. As you explore this village, you will notice joy etched on the faces of the pilgrims. Although they have traveled a long distance, they are not weary. With God and St. James guiding their paths, excitement and anticipation continues for their arrival in Santiago.

Day 9: Arca de O Pino - Monte del Gozo - Santiago de Compostela (Walking Day: 10.4 miles | 17 kilometers | 25,000 steps)

Day 10: Santiago de Compostela (Tour Day: 8.2 miles | 13.1 kilometers | 19,200 steps)

This morning you will awaken in the beautiful city of Santiago de Compostela! Formed by Galician granite, the Cathedral is one of the finest architectural examples in Europe as it encompasses Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles. Additionally, the Cathedral contains numerous and valuable pieces of art that truly captivate the eye. Upon entering the Cathedral, the tradition will lead as you will hug the dazzling statue of St. James. Following this intimate embrace, you will descend into the crypt where the Patron Saint of Pilgrims’ relics is kept. Following your visit, you will enjoy free time for lunch on own before your sightseeing tour of the city. Some stops on your tour include the Obradoiro Square, Fonseca Palace, Gelmirez Palace, Franco Street, and much more. Your evening will be free to spend at your leisure until a final dinner with your group. You will spend a final overnight in Santiago de Compostela.

Day 11: Return Home

Your last day in Spain will begin with breakfast at your hotel, followed by a transfer to the Santiago Airport for your return flight(s) home. You will say ‘hasta luego’ (see you later) to your new friends made on this journey.

According to Google Reviews and TripAdvisor, Macs Adventure and Camino Ways are the worst, while MundiCamino and Santiago Ways are the agencies of the Camino de Santiago best rated by pilgrims. Here are more details of these and other agencies.

Macs Adventure (Nº8)

Macs Adventure is an agency specialized in adventure tourism. Its offer includes trips to all corners of the world, among which is the Camino de Santiago.

Its headquarters are in the United Kingdom and the United States , a long way from the reality of the pilgrim routes. Perhaps that’s why it’s the agency least mentioned by the pilgrims.

Macs Adventure has 10 reviews and a score of 4.4 in Google Reviews for its Glasgow (UK) office. To a large extent, the trekking that they organize in the countries where their offices are located are well valued.

The main complaints of its users refer to the quality of the information provided and the lack of planning, but this type of comments are located on routes away from their offices. Regarding the Camino de Santiago, Macs Adventure have almost no reviews.

Facebook also gives them a rating of 4.4, according to the opinion of 153 people. While on Feefo, a portal in Great Britain specialized in collecting user feedback about different companies, Macs Adventure has 1,447 ratings and its score is a 4.6.

On none of the platforms, have we found comments on pilgrims who have done the Camino de Santiago with Macs Adventure. Therefore, for us it is the least specialized agency for pilgrim routes.

Camino Ways (Nº7)

Camino Ways is one of the specialized agencies on the Camino de Santiago. Its main office is located in Santiago de Compostela.

Of all the agencies we talk about in this article, Camino Ways is the second worst ranked in Google Reviews. This agency has only the opinion of 23 pilgrims and its average rating is 4.5.

However, when you go into more detail, to analyse the comments that users have left about their experience with Camino Ways , there are no specific complaints, only low ratings.

However, it is possible to check on TripAdvisor many more reviews about this company. Of the 1,150 reviews on Camino Ways, 7.5% indicate that it is a normal, bad or very poor agency. Its score on this platform is 4.5.

Most complaints relate to how basic the services that Camino Ways provides are . Some users point out that the accommodation was uncomfortable and others that the information and attention provided by the company was not adequate.

Follow the Camino (Nº6)

Follow the Camino is another of the foreign agencies that provides services to Santiago. Its headquarters are in Dublin, Ireland. However, unlike Macs Adventure, Follow the Camino does specialize in the Camino de Santiago.

Of all the agencies we will talk about in this article, Follow the Camino is the third agency with the lowest ratings in Google Reviews (10). However, unlike Camino Ways, its users do express signs of appreciation for the service the company has provided. Its rating on the platform is 4.7.

However, on TripAdvisor, where Follow the Camino has a higher number of ratings (561), its rating drops to 4.5. 6% of its users report that it is a normal, bad or poor agency.

Tee-Travel (Nº5)

Despite its generalist name, Tee-Travel is defined as one of the specialized agencies on the Camino de Santiago. Although they do also offer services to other destinations.

They have 3 offices located in Galicia. The main one is in Pontevedra and the other two are in Santiago de Compostela and Sarria.

Google Reviews have only 38 reviews, but all very positive, highlighting, mainly, the speed of Tee-Travel when it comes to responding to its users. Its score is 4.8.

TripAdvisor also has very good references and their score is 5.0 points. The only thing to doubt is that Tee-Travel also doesn’t have many reviews on TripAdvisor, only 57 reviews, so the sample is not very extensive.

Viajes Mundiplus (Nº4)

Viajes Mundiplus is another of the Spanish agencies that offers services to the Camino de Santiago. Its offices are located in Madrid.

This agency has a lot in common with Tee-Travel. On one hand, they have a global agency name, however, Viajes Mundiplus is an agency specialized in the Camino de Santiago. On the other, both agencies of the Camino de Santiago share scores in Google Reviews (4.8) and have only 38 reviews.

However, on TripAdvisor, the Madrid agency does have a large volume of reviews from pilgrims who have hired its services. Of the 1,098 reviews of Viajes Mundiplus, only 3.1% of users indicate that it is a normal, bad or poor agency. That’s why we put it above Tee-Travel.

Pilgrim (Nº3)

Pilgrim has its headquarters in Santiago de Compostela. Its services are oriented exclusively to the Camino de Santiago.

Pilgrim agency is rated by pilgrims in Google Reviews as the third highest in the ranking (4.8). We put it above Mundiplus Travel because the number of reviews on the Google platform is much higher (184).

On TripAdvisor, Pilgrim’s rating is 5.0, but the number of ratings is much lower. Only 48 users have left comments about Pilgrim on this platform. This only gives little confidence.

Mundicamino (Nº2)

Mundicamino is another of the Spanish agencies specialized in the Camino de Santiago. It is located in Burgos. There are very few references online about this organization . In fact, of all the agencies of the Camino de Santiago that are part of this list, Mundicamino has least comments on Google Reviews.

We’ve placed it the penultimate one based on the score you get on Google (4.9), but you should take into account that it’s based only on 8 reviews. The strange thing is that the low number of comments is not only recorded on that platform, but that the same thing happens on Facebook and TripAdvisor.

On Facebook, it also has only 8 reviews and, on TripAdvisor, has even fewer reviews, only 5. Therefore, although it is the second highest-rated agency, to us that so few pilgrims write about it, it generates some mistrust. As with Tee-Travel, or other agencies with a low volume of reviews.

Santiago Ways (Nº1)

Finally, the top-rated agency of the Camino de Santiago is Santiago Ways. But we don’t say it ourselves, users say it. And if you don’t believe us, you can check the different platforms for yourself.

Santiago Ways is a company led by Joseba Menoyo and its headquarters are in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. If you want to know more about us, you can read about our history here.

In Google Reviews, Santiago Ways is not only the top-scoring agency (4.9), but it is also the one with the highest volume of ratings that endorse it. In total, 464 people have left a review on the platform about us. That says a lot about the satisfaction of our pilgrims, don’t you think?

The same thing happens when you consult TripAdvisor, we are again the agency of the Camino de Santiago best valued (5.0). And no, it’s not a score based on a few reviews, as is the case with Pilgrim. On this platform, in the Santiago Ways profile, as of today, there are 346 reviews.

Do you now know which are the best agencies on the Camino de Santiago?

We hope that the information we have provided in this article, will help you decide on one of the many agencies that offer services to the Camino de Santiago: Macs Adventure, Camino Ways, Follow the Camino, Tee-Travel, Viajes Mundiplus, Pilgrim, MundiCamino or us, Santiago Ways.

If you still don’t know what type of services an agency can offer you, we encourage you to check out this blog post in which we explain the advantages of doing your journey with an agency.

With the above we say goodbye, not without first telling you that if you plan to do the Camino de Santiago with the help of an agency, do not take any chances. Trust the agency that has the best quality guarantee: its customers.

What are you waiting for to organize your trip to the Camino de Santiago with us? Call us, leave us a comment or write to us on our Facebook page. So, you will have the opportunity to talk with our team, real lovers of the Camino de Santiago.

Buen Camino!

My sister, daughter and I are planning a journey for October 2024. My question is this – does a guide from the agency walk with you or is the nature of the service one of strictly logistics and support? I think we prefer to walk alone and not as part of a larger group.

Hello, Lisa!

We are delighted that you are interested in doing the Camino de Santiago with Santiago Ways, and we would be more than happy to help you plan an itinerary.

For some time now we have preferred to specialize only in self-guided routes, so we are happy to plan any of our routes for you in this way. You will have all our professional guidance to assist you, as well as an information package and permanent support from us so that you can enjoy the magic of the Camino.

The Reservations team will send you an email as soon as possible with all the information so you can enjoy the magic of the Camino.

If you do not receive the mail in 48 labour hours, please check your ‘Spam’ folder.

Kind regards,

Santiago Ways Team

I contacted Pilgrim after reading your blog. It is now less than one month before departure date with non refundable airline tickets purchased. Pilgrim has over 4000EURO of my money and after a last minute route change required by mutual misunderstanding, I cannot get an email response from them to forward 200EURO final payment and get travel docs. Any suggestions on next step?

Thank you for contacting Santiago Ways! We’re very glad about your interest in walking the Camino de Santiago.

We are sorry we cannot help you, but our company is not Pilgrim, we are Santiago Ways.

On the next occasion, we recommend you contract with Santiago Ways, where we would be very happy to help you plan an itinerary so that you can enjoy the magic of the Camino.

I woul like for you to make a itinerary for me biking with my own bike and carying my own lugage from Santiago to St Jean Pied de Port on the french route. I will be biking around 64 kilometers per day and would like for you to book my hotel stays and add breakfast to those stays and if there is a town that really doesn’t have a restaurant then to add dinner as well. I also want two rest days every few days and especially after a big climb. I would be starting on May 25th 2023

Thank You, Peter

How to Choose a Camino de Santigo Tour

Choosing the right Camino de Santiago tour is crucial to ensuring a safe and enjoyable pilgrimage experience. Here are some key factors to consider when making your decision:

Route Selection

Determine which Camino route aligns with your preferences and physical abilities. The Camino Frances is popular for its historical significance, while the Portuguese Coastal Route offers stunning coastal views. Research the various routes to find one that resonates with your interests and capabilities.

Tour Duration and Pace

Consider the duration of the tour and the pace at which it is conducted. Some tours may be shorter or longer, and the daily walking distances can vary. Choose a tour that aligns with your fitness level and the amount of time you have available for the pilgrimage.

Accommodation Preferences

Camino tours offer a range of accommodation options, from simple hostels to more luxurious hotels. Determine your comfort level and choose a tour that provides accommodation in line with your preferences.

Consider the size of the tour group. Smaller groups often foster a more intimate and personalized experience, while larger groups may offer a more social atmosphere. Choose a group size that suits your preference for interaction.

Support Services

Check what support services are included in the tour package. Some tours provide luggage transportation, allowing you to walk with a lighter backpack, while others may offer vehicle support along the route.

Cost and Inclusions

Compare the costs of different tours and carefully review what is included in each package. Ensure that the tour covers essential expenses such as accommodation, meals, and any additional services you may require.

Reviews and Recommendations

Read reviews from fellow pilgrims who have taken the same tour. Recommendations from others can provide valuable insights into the tour company’s reliability, quality of services, and overall satisfaction of participants.

History of the Camino

The Camino de Santiago, known as the Way of St. James, has a deep and ancient history that traces back to the 9th century. The pilgrimage’s origins lie in the discovery of the remains of St. James the Apostle in Santiago de Compostela, situated in northwestern Spain.

Legend has it that St. James, after being martyred in Jerusalem, had his body transported by sea to the Iberian Peninsula. The site of Santiago de Compostela was declared holy after a hermit witnessed a divine light illuminating a field, leading to the rediscovery of St. James’s tomb.

Throughout the Middle Ages, the Camino de Santiago flourished as one of the most significant Christian pilgrimages, drawing believers from all corners of Europe who traversed various routes to reach the sacred destination. St. James, also revered as “Matamoros” or “Moorslayer,” became a symbol during the Reconquista, a period of Christian reconquest in the Iberian Peninsula.

This pilgrimage route left an indelible mark on the landscape, with churches, cathedrals, and monasteries adorning the path, most notably the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. Despite a decline in popularity in the 16th century, the Camino experienced a revival in the late 20th century, attracting a diverse array of modern pilgrims, including those seeking spiritual, cultural, and recreational fulfillment.

Today, the Camino de Santiago remains a powerful symbol of unity and cultural heritage, connecting people on a profound journey of self-discovery and spiritual exploration.

I have never done this, but it sounds amazing. I think I would like to do the coastal tour.

Thanks for such an informative and well written article.

Linda

My husband has been keen to do one of these walks since we saw the film The Way starring Martin Sheen. We also have an English friend who moved to Santiago from Madrid not long ago. Something to definitely consider when we retire.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

By shuguley , February 15, 2014 in Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

The Bolshoi is a world well-known stage for the highest level of music, opera and ballet show and that is why we wanted to catch a glimpse of that legendary place. I lack words to describe the performance (we are well acquainted with the music and we know and even the story, however, the words were meaningless but, anyone can overcome that barrier since the music, and the performance supplied us with pleasure of the highest level). • johnatang55 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Main attraction of Moscow Actually too much time to see only Kremlin for me. But we were with the kids, and it was a good way to explore everything at our own pace. Daria is a very experienced guide, knows a lot about Kremlin. Best of all was to skip the lines. The speed boat called "meteor" is much better than going to Peterhof by car - no traffic jam and going right from the city center. Good for kids. Read more Written July 2, 2021

  • john m 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Appalling service, and very costly. We booked for the Swan Lake ballet on 25 December 2019, with travel date on 24 May 2020, through U Visit Russia. . Due to the Covit19 pandemic we were unable to visit Russia nor attend the ballet. Two tickets were purchased for US$465.50. U Visit Russia was advised of not being able to attend and agreed to pay a full refund but there would be a delay due to the number of cancellations. After some time no refund was forthcoming and U Visit Russia was again contacted by email and we were advised that due to the volume of cancellations the refund would be credited to our credit card within 9 weeks. Nothing and again they were contacted by email but no response was ever received. No refund was ever received. Nothing!! The lesson is to beware of ever dealing with this company. • WesternGardener 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Where are the refunds I booked a private tour for Kamchatka with UVisit Russia for several people (40). Each person paid a deposit (through PayPal) of US$15.30. On June 22, those that first cancelled received a refund. However, I've sent email after email to this company's rep requesting refunds for 18 persons. To date, September 4, 2020, those 18 individuals have not received refunds. Not happy. • Dmitry F 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles U Visit Russia company way to go to see Russia Great people working for U visit Russia. I had pleasure to work with Maria Nerkrasova who arranged for our group of 14 Americans to visit Sergiev Posad (u must visit that monastery). She arranged for us tour guide Svetalna in Sergiev Posad - who provided us with excellent information. We visited Matroshka factory where we meet lady who's family been doing matreshka art for over 50 years, we had fabulous lunch with Russian traditional non alcoholic molt drink - kvass at Trapeznaya restaurant. We had awesome driver Ilya who drove our group from Moscow to Sergiev Posad and back with smile and confidence. Our group of 14 visitors from US can't say enough good things about U Visit Russia. Great company, great and caring people to work with like Maria, Anna, and their guides. If you decide to utilize U Visit Russia when you in Moscow ask them to secure Svetlana to be your tour guide, when you in St. Petersburg ask for Victoria to be your tour guide. When I come back to Russia again, i will use U Visit Russia company again 100%. Thanks, D Read more Written February 28, 2020
  • Scott M 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic Guide, Great Experience Today’s tour of the Kremlin, Dimond Fund and Armoury was absolutely fantastic. My guide Irina was incredibly knowledgeable full of fun facts, humour and a love of her nation it’s history and treasures. She even went out of her way to make sure that I knew the meaning behind a series of Icons in church’s and historical objects in the armoury. 100% recommend this tour. Even if it’s just to skip the 50 line to hope to get tickets at the Kremlins offices. Read more Written January 5, 2020
  • 131natashal 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Do NOT purchase from this company!!!!!!! I bought a tour ticket for my daughter on her first visit to Moscow. We were asked to send over her passport information, and they even called us and demanded we send it right away (we were out and wi-fi connection was spotty). We sent it and everything seemed fine. On Thursday we got to the theatre and everyone that worked there told us the tickets were FAKE, they’d never seen anything like these, etc etc. I had to pay the tour fee (2000 rubles) AGAIN to buy ANOTHER TICKET there. Only after the tour had finished did they actually send us the PDF files that they had claimed to send earlier (which they did not). This also happened to TWO OTHER people on the same tour, they received their PDFs from Viator at the end of the tour. Save yourself 4000 rubles and the headache and just buy directly from the Bolshoi Theatre. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read more Written November 28, 2019
