Elephant ride was the best

We had a amazing experience and never to miss elephant ride The path to reach topslip was also amazing

Visited the tiger reserve and took safari of 3 hours. Good nature trail but returned with seeing only few seers. It was a Sunday and lot of safaris happened which may be reason no animals were seen. Should try on a week day with less crowd and may be a worth visit.

We drove here with the hope of seeing some animals and proceeding to Pirambikulum, but the drive was terrible with very bad roads, although there was a charge to drive up here. No animals were sighted except some monkeys, deer, peacocks and a chained aimed elephant! there was an animal museum in a dilapidated state!

The drive through the tiger reserve is done in a small bus. The bus we sat in had more passengers than seating places, so it was really cramped and very very uncomfortable due to the extremely bad roads. The whole ride takes around 3 to 4 hours and the only thing we got to see was some deer and some wild porc, that's it. They stopped at a place where you could eat, but the place looked really awfull so we ended up buying some cookies. The are some nice viewpoints, but overall, it's not worth spending all that time there.

The drive upto Top Slip is good inspite of the bad roads. There is always a thrill in driving in a forest and the hope of animal sighthings make the drive more interesting though the hope will most probably remain as it is. There are trek and safari options organized by forest personnel. Elephant rides also available. Overall it is a good typical outing place for any family, especially with kids. I was there on a weekend and found it very crowded with the usual high-decible public and hence I did not get the "forest" thrill once I reached the top. 2 KMs beyond this place is the Kerala border where Parambikulam tiger reserve starts. There are good-looking cottages available here and they have to be booked at Forest office in Pollachi (04259-238360) and it surely needs to be tried once. Top Slip is 33-35 KMs from Pollachi and passes through beautiful roads through Aanaimalai. This drive to Top Slip was the best part I enjoyed. The entry to the forest area starts from Sethumadai. A fee of 20 rupees is charged per adult and 50 rupees for vehicle. The parking charges at the top is high-priced at 100 rupees per car.

Was a fairly decent walk, sighted a few birds, endemic to the region monkeys and deers. Didn't feel very unique though.

Trek or trekking is a long journey undertaken on foot in areas where common means of transport is generally not available. Trekking is not mountaineering; it is days of walking, along with adventure.

Rafting or white water rafting is a challenging recreational outdoor activity using an inflatable raft to navigate a river or other water source.

How To Reach Anamalai Tiger Reserve?

Getting to and from Anamalai Tiger Reserve is easy from any of the nearby major cities. There is a road that can be used from Pollachi to reach the Reserve. However, there is neither a train station nor an airport. Taking a train to Coimbatore and then driving the rest of the way is the most convenient method to get to Anamalai Tiger Reserve.

Coimbatore Foreign Airport is the closest airport, and it offers flights to local destinations inside India and international destinations such as Singapore , Colombo , and Sharjah. Taxis are available at the airport for the ride to the Reserve.

When traveling by train from Coimbatore , you may easily reach many other important cities in India. To go to Anamalai from Coimbatore, hire a taxi. Otherwise, take a train to Pollachi, the closest train station, and then take a taxi for the shorter journey. From towns like Chennai , Coimbatore, Trichy , and Palakkad , trains may make their way to Pollachi.

Driving your car or renting a taxi for a weekend excursion would be the best option for getting to the Reserve via road. A pleasant drive across the rolling green hills is something that most people would enjoy. You can get to Anamalai Tiger Reserve from Pollachi, although the bus service is spotty.

Methods of Transportation:

Safari vehicles and jeeps available for rent at the Reserve may be utilized to explore the grounds. You may also go on hiking tours if you choose.

When to Visit the Anamalai Tiger Reserve for the Best Experience?

The weather in the Western Ghats, where the Anamalai Tiger Reserve is located, is pleasant year-round. With its Shola Forests, meadows, moist deciduous evergreen forest ranges, and perennial rivers and streams, Anamalai offers one of India’s most beautiful verdant settings.

While the Anamalai Tiger Reserve is open year-round, the ideal time to go is between December and June, when the temperatures are milder, and the tigers are more active.

Summer (March – May)

In the summer, the Reserve’s residents go to the plains for their annual summer vacation. There is little precipitation throughout the summers, although the rare rain of mangoes may help revive the land after a dry winter.

The summer rains flood the streams and rivers, providing a haven for a wide variety of wildlife, including birds, reptiles, wild boars, leopards, and Malabar Giant Squirrels. During the summer, you may also see butterflies flying from the Western Ghats to the Eastern Ghats on their annual migration.

Monsoon (June – November)

The Anamalai range receives monsoon precipitation from the southwest and northeast. The southwest monsoon, which occurs between June and September, is rather typical. Still, the northeast monsoon, which occurs between October and December, is very heavy and frigid, causing the streams to overflowing their banks.

It’s possible to visit Anamalai since the area transforms into a picturesque scene when it rains, with a hazy, ethereal quality that’s perfect for photography. However, planning an outdoor adventure like a safari during the rainy season might be challenging.

Winter (December – February)

In December, the post-monsoon tiger census in Anamalai gets underway at the Forest office. Elephants are most often sighted during December and March. A dry, cold mist has settled over the land following recent rains.

You may enjoy Anamalai by taking an elephant or jeep safari through the rugged forest trails, but remember to bring along some warm clothing.

The Anamalai Tiger Reserve’s Most Notable Attractions

Anamalai and its surroundings are unadulterated, pure nature at its finest, with towering mist-covered peaks and verdant plains strewn with tea plantations and untamed wooded regions. The wilderness is a fantastic place to go hiking or trekking since it has many trails to explore, rivers for canoeing, and picturesque waterfalls.

We’ll fill you in on all the great activities available in and around Anamalai Tiger Reserve. In addition to information on where to eat and stay, we also provide a shopping guide and background on the festivities held in Anamalai.

1. Explorations of the Woods

Kozhikamuthi Elephant Camp's Topslip Tamil Nadu

Take advantage of Kozhikamuthi Elephant Camp’s Topslip location by taking an eco-friendly vehicle safari there. Even in Topslip, Ulandi, you may go on an elephant safari if the weather is good enough. There are scheduled elephant safaris every day of the week between 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM.

On an elephant safari, you may see lion-tailed macaques, elephants, leopards, and perhaps the striped cat of the forest, the tiger, if you’re fortunate. Guided excursions into the forest are available and are broken up into different lengths. If you plan on hiking during the monsoons, ensure you are fully prepared by using Dettol or lotions to repel leeches.

2. The Elephant Camp of Kozhikamuthi

Elephant Camp of Kozhikamuthi Tamil Nadu

This is an old camp where elephants were trained to haul logs. Tree cutting ceased in the early 1970s, and the camp has become a famous tourist destination in Topslip.

Malasar tribes care for the elephants and train them to be used as kumkis to rein in wild elephants that have gotten out of hand. It’s enjoyable to see the elephants playing and splashing about in the rivers after receiving their daily food and care from their mahouts.

3. Teak Tree of the Connemara Region

Kannimara Teak Tree in Parambikulam Tiger Reserve

Check out the 460-year-old Kannimara Teak Tree in Parambikulam Tiger Reserve, which is thought to be the only tree of its kind to have survived the widespread felling of teak trees for their lumber.

The natives said that a trail of blood would emerge from the tree’s trunk if anybody tried to chop it down. The tribals revere the tree, which they refer to as Kannimara (which means “virgin tree”), and for which they have prevented its destruction.

4. Monkey Falls

Monkey Falls Pollachi Tamil Nadu

With the southwestern monsoon rains, the Monkey Falls becomes one of the greatest sites around Anamalai to take a refreshing dip in the cool mountain waters.

Along the road from Valparai to Pollachi, you’ll find Monkey Falls, not far from the Aliyar Dam. You should be on the lookout for the naughty monkeys who gave the waterfalls their name.

Do [ edit ]

Topslip is a place where one can do nothing and come away fresh! The more adventurous can go on forest treks hoping to spot anything from the Indian Bison, several varieties of deer, wild boar, wild elephants, Asiatic wild dogs, sloth bear and the elusive tiger. Most animals are nocturnal visitors and therefore a night ride arranged by the forest department is highly recommended. There is an elephant training camp which is worth a visit.

Many tourists recommend the elephant safari as it meanders through the forest: lookout for the nilgiri langurs! Though wildcat sighting is rare. However, there is plenty of fauna. Topslip is an ornithologists delight: there are nearly 250 species of birds in the Karian Shola area, but be warned, the dreaded King Cobra is never far off!

Senators reject field trip to African Lion Safari amid elephant bill study

Elephant rides took place at african lion safari in hamilton until 2019.

African Lion Safari confirmed it permanently stopped offering elephant rides in 2019.

Social Sharing

The Senate legal affairs committee has rejected a motion calling for members to take a $50,000 field trip to the African Lion Safari in Hamilton to see the zoo's elephant exhibit.

The committee is studying a government bill that would prohibit new captivity and breeding of elephants and great apes without a licence that shows it is for conservation, science or the animal's welfare.

Conservative Sen. Don Plett says the bill would have the biggest impact on the African Lion Safari, a drive-through zoo in Hamilton's ward 13 in the Dundas Valley which is home to 17 elephants.

He says it is offensive that senators don't want to take the time to visit in person before passing a bill that could kill a family-owned business.

Sen. Marty Klyne from the Progressive Senators Group, says he doesn't agree with spending $50,000 of taxpayer money to get a one-sided view of elephant captivity, and that the cost would be even higher to also visit an elephant sanctuary for comparison.

Klyne says the science on the impact of captivity on elephants is clear and the bill must pass.

Elephant rides at safari stopped in 2019 after injury

In 2023, CBC News reported that African Lion Safari was one of 55 companies that received  Ontario taxpayer money for tourism losses during the pandemic.

The zoo received the maximum grant of $695,000, as did other high-profile tourism attractions, such as Canada's Wonderland.

Elephant rides took place at African Lion Safari in Flamborough, Ont., until 2019, when a trainer was injured by an elephant named Maggie.

  • CBC Investigates African Lion Safari ended elephant rides after 2019 attack. So why are they still allowed in Canada?
  • Canadian zoo accreditation body bans elephant rides. Advocate says change is overdue

That attack was the subject of a CBC investigation , which found CAZA continued to allow the rides a decade after its American counterpart, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, halted the practice because of safety concerns for staff who work with elephants.

CAZA announced it had banned elephant rides for its members in December of 2019.

Safari Park to welcome Madhubala elephant in May

ISLAMABAD  -  Madhubala, a 16-year-old African elephant, is finally getting a new lease of life after spending years in solitary confinement at the Karachi Zoo as she will be relocated to Safari Park Lahore next month.  According to Zoo administration, the arrangements for the transfer have been completed, Madhubala will join two other elephants, Sonia and Malika after relocation to Safari Park. The relocation is a result of the collaboration between Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and Four Paws, a global animal welfare organization, said a private news channel. Madhubala’s story is one of resilience and hope. She was one of four African elephants treated by Four Paws in 2022 for a dental infection and pain caused by a broken tusk. Her new home at the Safari Park promises to provide her with the care and companionship she deserves. “We are thrilled to see Madhubala finally getting the life she deserves,” said a spokesperson for Four Paws. “Her story is a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of animal welfare.” The Safari Park, which is already home to two other elephants, is preparing a special sanctuary for Madhubala. The new enclosure will provide her with ample space to roam and socialize with her new companions. Madhubala’s relocation is a significant development in the efforts to protect and conserve animals in Pakistan. Her story serves as a reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the need for continued support and action.
