Switzerland to remain part of the Euro Hockey Tour

Until 2027, the Swiss national team will keep facing Sweden, Finland, and Czechia four times a season.

euro hockey tour switzerland

Last autumn was the first time Switzerland was invited to the Euro Hockey Tour, replacing Russia. The contract has now been extended for an additional three years, meaning the Swiss men's national team will be part of the series of tournaments until 2027.

This also means that the SWISS Ice Hockey Games will remain a thing for the duration of the contract.

🇨🇿 🇫🇮 🇨🇭 🇸🇪 switzerland confirmed as russian replacement on euro hockey tour through 2023-24.

euro hockey tour switzerland

After their invasion of Ukraine that began on 24 February, the Tour’s other participants ( Czechia , Finland and Sweden ) were left to find replacements for both the Czech and Beijer Hockey Games, after they jointly announced they would no longer compete with Russia. Austria filled in at the Czech Hockey Games and Switzerland at the Beijer Hockey Games, with an understanding they would be invited to November’s Karjala Tournament in Finland to kick off the 2022-23 Tour. However, it was today confirmed that the Eisgenossen  would join the Tour full-time, taking over hosting duties for what would normally be the Channel One Cup in the December international break. It has yet to be determined the Tour’s status following the 2023-24 season.

As reported by the Czech Ice Hockey Association, the schedule for the next two seasons has been mapped out, and is as follows:

2022-23 Euro Hockey Tour

  • 10-13 November 2022 – Karjala Tournament (hosted by Finland)
  • 15-18 December 2022 – tournament name TBC (hosted by Switzerland)
  • 09-12 February 2023 – Beijer Hockey Games (hosted by Sweden)
  • 27-30 April 2023 – Czech Hockey Games (hosted by Czechia)

2023-24 Euro Hockey Tour

  • 09-12 November 2023 – Karjala Tournament (hosted by Finland)
  • 14-17 December 2023 – tournament name TBC (hosted by Switzerland)
  • 08-11 February 2024 – Beijer Hockey Games (hosted by Sweden)

The Euro Hockey Tour (EHT) is an annual ice hockey tournament only open to the national men's teams of the Czech Republic , Finland , Switzerland and Sweden . Most of the teams use the competition as a preparation for the upcoming World Championships or Olympics , allowing less experienced players to collect valuable ice time in their national colours.

Playing format

Euro Hockey Tour consists of four tournaments:

  • Karjala Tournament in Finland
  • Swiss Ice Hockey Games in Switzerland , replacing the Channel One Cup in Russia following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine
  • Sweden Hockey Games in Sweden
  • Czech Hockey Games in the Czech Republic

Each team plays three games in each of the tournaments, giving a total of twelve games per team. After the four tournaments have finished, the teams are seeded according to their respective combined point total from all four tournaments.

In each tournament, five games are played in the host city, and one game in another participating country. For example, in the 2007 edition of Karjala Tournament, the game between Sweden and Russia was played in Jönköping, Sweden, rather than in Finland, who host the Karjala Cup. Every country is assigned one home game and one away game in those games.

Each team is given three points for a regulation-time win, two points for an overtime or shootout win, one point for a loss in overtime or shootout, and zero points for a loss in regulation time. In the four tournaments, if two or more teams end with the same number of points, they are seeded based on head-to-head results in games against the tied teams. In the EHT standings however, two or more teams tied in points are seeded based on the better goal difference.

Prize money

The prize money for the winner of each tournament is € 50,000 while the second seed gets €30,000, the third seed gets €25,000, and the fourth seed gets €15,000. The EHT season winner receives another €75,000, the team finishing second gets €30,000, and the team finishing third gets €15,000. [1]

Finals in previous years

Medal games were not played until the 2003–04 season. Before that, place order was determined by the tournament standings. The seasons 2003–04, 2004–05 and 2006–07 used a format where the first-placed and second-placed teams played a home-and-home two-game series for the EHT gold and silver medals, while the third-placed and fourth-placed teams played two games for the bronze. In 2005–06, the championship was determined by a single game played at the home of the first-place team. Since 2007–08, no EHT finals have been played.

Participating teams

Only four European teams compete in EHT:

Euro Hockey Tour - a tournament of selected teams

The Euro Hockey Tour (EHT) is an annual ice hockey tournament available only to the Czech Republic, Finland, Switzerland, and Sweden national men's teams. The league was founded in 1996, and most teams use the competition as preparation for the upcoming World Championships or Olympic Games. The EHT consists of four tournaments: the Karjala Tournament in Finland, the Swiss Ice Hockey Games in Switzerland, the Sweden Hockey Games in Sweden, and the Czech Hockey Games in the Czech Republic. In the Euro Hockey Tour, there are 4 teams, and the number of matches in one tournament is 6 matches, totaling 24 matches.

Each team is awarded 3 points for a win in regulation time, 2 points for a win in overtime or after a shootout, 1 point for a loss in overtime or after a shootout, and 0 points for a loss in regulation time. When points are equal, the results of meetings between teams with the same number of points are first considered, then the difference in goals scored and conceded among the tied teams in the four tournaments is considered.

Best Euro Hockey Tour Team

As of 2023, Finland has won the Euro Hockey Tour 7 times, making it one of the most successful teams in the tournament's history. Finland is followed by Sweden with 5 wins and the Czech Republic with 3 wins, while Switzerland has not won the tournament yet.

When is the next tournament?

The next Euro Hockey Tour Carjala Cup tournament will take place from 9 to 12 November 2023. The matches will be played in Tampere, Finland, and will feature teams from Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, and the Czech Republic.

How to get on the Euro Hockey Tour?

Participation in the Euro Hockey Tour is only open to national men's teams from the Czech Republic, Finland, Switzerland, and Sweden. Other teams cannot participate in this tournament. This tournament does not grant promotion to any league.

Best players and prize money

The Euro Hockey Tour all-time top ice-hockey scorer per season is Johan Davidsson, who holds the record for the most points scored, amassing 14 points for Sweden in the season 2006-2007.

The prize money for the winner of each tournament is €50,000, with second place receiving €30,000, third place €25,000, and fourth place €15,000. The EHT season winner receives an additional €75,000, the second place team receives €30,000, and the third place team receives €15,000.

Gólmani Berra a Wallstedt drželi nakonec čistý štít až do 52. minuty.

Canada beats Latvia in quarterfinals at men's U18 hockey championship

VANTAA, Finland — Carter George made 23 saves for his second shutout of the tournament as Canada defeated Latvia 4-0 in quarterfinal action Thursday at the world men's under-18 hockey championship.

Team captain Porter Martone scored and 16-year-old Gavin McKenna had an assist.

McKenna is second in tournament scoring with 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in five games. He tied Macklin Celebrini (2023) and Tyson Jost (2015) for most points at a single U18 men's world championship by a Canadian.

Martone is third with 14 points (five goals, nine assists). He now has 20 career points at the tournament, one back of Connor Bedard's all-time Canadian record.

“I have to give lots of credit to my linemates," McKenna said. "I’ve been playing with Martone and (Caleb) Desnoyers, who have been unreal linemates, same with Roger McQueen who I started with.

"As the tournament has progressed, we’ve gotten better every game, have built a great friendship with Porter and all the guys. Having Martone close to his own record as well, it’s been super cool."

Maxim Masse scored the winning goal on a power play 5:08 into the game.

Ryder Ritchie and Jett Luchanko, into an empty net, also scored for Canada. Tij Iginla and Harrison Brunicke added two assists apiece.

Goaltender Mikus Vecvanags made 34 saves for Latvia.

“I thought Latvia played well and so did we," McKenna said. "They came out hard and we had a pretty good response to their pressure and George had a great game in net. When he makes big saves, it gives us motivation to keep playing well and it gives us momentum as well."

Canada will face Sweden in Saturday's semifinals for a second straight tournament. The Swedes advanced with a 2-1 win over Finland.

Sweden dumped Canada 7-2 last year at last year's worlds in Switzerland. Canada then beat Slovakia 4-3 in overtime for bronze.

Canada beat Sweden 6-3 in its opening game at this year's tournament.

The defending champion United States will face Slovakia in the other semifinal. The U.S. beat Switzerland 4-0 in the quarterfinals while Slovakia edged Czechia 3-2.

VERNIER, Switzerland (AP) — Carlos Rodriguez protected his yellow jersey through a rain-soaked final stage Sunday to win the six-day Tour of Romandie for the biggest race victory of his career.

Four previous winners in the French-speaking region of Switzerland went on to win that season’s Tour de France, including Chris Froome in 2013. Rodriguez placed fifth in cycling’s marquee event last year and won a stage.

Rodriguez started Sunday’s flat stage that looped round the suburbs of Geneva — won in a sprint finish by Dorian Godon — with a seven-second lead he took by placing third in a mountain stage Saturday.

The 23-year-old Ineos Grenadiers rider kept that winning margin over runner-up Aleksandr Vlasov, the 2022 Romandie winner. Third-placed Florian Lipowitz was third, trailing Rodriquez by nine seconds.

Godon sealed his second stage win this week, edging Simone Consonni with Dion Smith third.
