Facebook not working here are 6 potential fixes.

Try these potential fixes to get Facebook up and running again.

Quick Links

Is facebook down check and see if facebook is offline, make sure you're connected to the internet, refresh your browser, clear your cache, restart the facebook app or your device, update or reinstall the facebook app, key takeaways.

If Facebook isn't working and you've confirmed Facebook servers aren't down or your internet connection is good, you can try refreshing the page in your browser. Clearing your browser or app cache can help, as can restarting or updating the Facebook app.

There can be several reasons behind Facebook not working, whether it be a server issue, a bug in an outdated version of the app, or something else. Here are a few troubleshooting tips that may explain why Facebook isn't working.

First and foremost, there may be issues with Facebook's servers or some other internal issue that has the entire site offline for everyone. You can quickly see if Facebook is down by checking its status on Downdetector , a site that aggregates and analyzes data to detect service disruptions.

If Downdetector determines Facebook is down, then there's nothing you can do but wait until Facebook's engineers get things up and running again. Check back in soon to see if you can use the site. However, if Facebook seems to be up and running for everyone else, then there's something else afoot on your end.

If you're reading this, you have access to the Internet. Even still, don't rule out a bad or choppy internet connection when you can't get on Facebook. If you're in a wireless dead zone, don't have good service in your area, or if your Wi-Fi router or ethernet cable is malfunctioning , then a lack of internet connection could be the culprit.

If you determine your internet connection is indeed the culprit, simply rebooting the router or making there are no loose connections may fix the problem. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about living in an area with bad service , but at least you'll know it's the cause.

If you're using Facebook in a web browser, sometimes the issue may be as simple as a glitch in your browser, and the solution may be as simple as refreshing. On most devices, the refresh button (a circular arrow) can be found in the top-left corner of the window.

Alternatively, you can press Ctrl+R on Windows or Command+R on Mac to refresh the page you're on. Or, if you're using a smartphone or tablet, you can usually swipe down on Facebook's website to refresh it.

If it's still not working after you refresh the page, try opening Facebook in a new browser tab or window.

Cache in browsers is the local copy of a website's data, which is used to increase browsing performance, but it's oftentimes also the culprit of misbehaving web pages. Clearing your cache is simple, and may fix Facebook if it's not working. You can clear the cache on Chrome , Edge , Firefox , or any other web browser you may be using.

Keep in mind that after you clear your cache, your performance will take a temporary hit and you'll need to re-login to sites that you were previously logged into. Even still, it may be necessary to get things running properly again.

If you're using the Facebook mobile app, you can try clearing an app's cache on Android and on iPhone too.

Have you tried turning it off and turning it back on again? This age-old technique has been around for a while because it works. Restarting the Facebook app or your browser may resolve any rogue blips in the software, and restarting your device may fix any problems that were caused by memory issues.

The process for closing apps varies between iPhone and Android , but they both only require a few steps. The process for restarting your iPhone or Android mobile devices is also quick and simple, allowing you to use this technique to diagnose the issue in a hurry.

Keeping your applications up-to-date is always a good idea, as these updates often address critical bugs and security flaws. If you're using an outdated version of the Facebook app, there may be a bug causing the app to crash or otherwise not work. Update the app on your iPhone or Android mobile device to see if it resolves the issue, and consider enabling auto-updates to ensure you never miss another important update.

Alternatively, you can consider uninstalling and then reinstalling the Facebook app.

11 Common Facebook Problems and Errors (and How to Fix Them)

Facebook has lots of problems and frustrations. Here are fixes for the most annoying Facebook issues and errors you'll come across.

Even though nearly everyone uses Facebook, there's plenty wrong with the platform. For every great story or picture you see on Facebook, you have to put up with a dozen low-quality memes, annoying posts, and frustrating user interface elements.

We'll help you put a stop to these Facebook annoyances. Let's look at solutions for some common Facebook problems and errors, so you don't have to put up with them anymore.

1. Require Reviews for Tags

Facebook tagging is a fun feature on the surface, but it's also a privacy risk. If someone takes an embarrassing picture of you and tags you in it, all your friends will be able to see that picture. There's also a risk that someone could use a tagged post to obtain too much personal information about you.

In 2021, Facebook discontinued its facial recognition feature, meaning that the service will no longer recognize your face and suggest it as a tag in photos for your friends. Manual tagging for photos and posts is still an option, however.

You can't completely block photo tags on Facebook, though you can prevent others from seeing tags. Click your profile at the top-right, then go to Settings & privacy > Settings > Privacy > Profile and tagging to see the relevant options.

Here, change the Who can see posts you're tagged in on your profile? to Only me , if you don't want tags to appear at all. You can also change the options under Reviewing to require your approval before tags appear to your friends.

If Facebook Tagging Isn't Working

If it seems like Facebook tagging isn't working, meaning that typing @ followed by someone's name doesn't function, the reason is likely that your friend disabled this option on their account. Try tagging someone else and see if that works. If you still have problems, refer to sections #10 and #11 below for tips on troubleshooting deeper Facebook errors.

2. Mute Excessive Posters on Facebook

We all know someone who posts all the time on Facebook:

  • An uncle shares too many political rants.
  • Your grandpa has no idea how to use Facebook and posts nonsense every day.
  • That one friend shares too many pictures of their pet.
  • A friend from college copies and pastes a blurry JPEG riddled with grammatical errors to let you know that they really hate cancer.

These scenarios result in a Facebook friend dilemma. You don't want to unfriend these people and hurt their feelings, but you're also sick of seeing their posts. The solution is to unfollow them; you won't see their updates anymore, but will still remain friends.

To unfollow someone on Facebook , visit their profile page. On the right side below their cover photo, you should see a box that says Friends . Click that, then select Unfollow .

Now, you won't have to suffer from that person's posts anymore. You'll still be friends, so you can visit their timeline when you want to check out what they're up to. And if you change your mind, just click the Follow button to start seeing their posts in your feed again.

For a short-term solution, you can also click the three-dot Menu button on any post, then choose Snooze [Name] for 30 days . This will hide their posts for a month, so you can take a break from that person.

Unfollowing someone doesn't send them a notification, so don't worry about them knowing. If you ever want to see everyone you've unfollowed in one place, click your profile photo at the top-right of Facebook and choose Settings & privacy > Feed .

From the resulting menu, pick Reconnect and you'll see everyone you've unfollowed. Click the Plus button to follow any of them again.

3. Keep Important Friends First

On the opposite end of the posting spectrum are friends whose posts you don't want to miss. Facebook's always-changing algorithms mean you might not ever see certain updates from friends. To combat this, you can mark your closest friends to see their updates at the top of your Facebook feed.

Visit the friend's page whose posts you want to prioritize. Click the Friends box again, but this time, select Favorites . Facebook will then put updates from that person closer to the top when you refresh your feed. You're able to add up to 30 people to the Favorites list.

To see who's on your Favorites list, visit the same Feed panel as above and choose Favorites . This will show all your friends; click All at the top-right and change the box to Favorites Only to see who's on the list and easily remove people if needed.

4. Opt Out of Targeted Ads on Facebook

Facebook makes most of its money from advertising. Thus, the platform spends a lot of time trying to serve you the most relevant ads in the hopes you'll interact with them. By default, Facebook tracks you everywhere you go and uses your browsing habits to influence what ads you see. You can opt out of these personalized ads and see more general ones based on your public characteristics.

To do so, click your profile photo at the top-right of Facebook's interface and select Settings & privacy > Settings . On the left sidebar, click the See more in Accounts Center link, as this setting is now applied to all your Meta accounts. Once on this new page, click Ad preferences > Ad settings .

Here, you'll see a few categories. Choose No under Activity information from ad partners and Facebook won't use your activity on other sites to show ads on Facebook.

Open the Categories used to reach you and you can prevent Facebook from using information like your employer, education, and relationship status to show ads. Pick Other Categories at the bottom to see what Facebook thinks you're interested in; choose Remove for any topics you don't want to influence ads.

Next, Audience-based advertising lets you see advertisers that include you on their lists, based on your information or activity. You can check each of these lists, see why you're on it, and prevent that list from being used to show you ads here.

Setting Social interactions to Only Me prevents Facebook from using pages that you like to show ads to your friends.

Finally, if you disable the slider in Ads shown off of Meta , websites that use Meta's ad services can't use your profile to affect the ads you see outside of Facebook.

5. Stop Sharing Posts With Everyone

Just like you get sick of seeing other people's posts on Facebook, sometimes you don't want to share your own updates with certain friends. Maybe you don't want your boss to see what you were up to on your day off, or don't care for another round of commentary on your life from your sister. Using a few methods, you can easily hide your posts from certain people.

If you only want to hide a post from someone once, click the audience selector button in the Create Post window. This appears under your name and probably says Friends or Public . The audience menu has many options to let you control exactly who sees your updates.

One option is to choose Friends except and search for any friends you don't want to see the post. Click the red Remove button to keep them from seeing the post, then Save Changes to finish.

Conversely, you can pick Specific friends to only share with certain people you pick. To get even more granular, try the Custom option, which lets you share with specific people or lists while preventing certain people or lists from seeing the post.

To keep someone from seeing your posts all the time, you can add them to your Restricted list . People on this list won't see anything you post unless it's set to Public or you tag them in it. To add someone to this list, visit their page, select the Friends button, and then click Edit Friend List . Scroll down and click the Restricted list.

In this panel, you can also add that person to the Close Friends group. This list also provides an easy way to share posts exclusively with your most trusted friends, and is an option in the audience selector.

6. Block Annoying Auto-Playing Videos

Very few people like videos that play as soon as you scroll past them. They're loud and can catch you off-guard if you thought your volume was muted. Plus, if you're on a metered connection, they're a waste of data.

To turn off auto-play for videos on Facebook, click your profile picture again and choose Settings & privacy > Settings . Click the Videos tab on the left, then set the Auto-Play Videos option to Off .

7. Block Annoying App Invites

Facebook features hundreds of games, nearly all of them designed to waste your time and//or take your money. If you're sick of friends pleading for extra lives in Facebook games, you can block all Facebook invites and requests by game or by person.

To do this, take another trip to Settings & privacy > Settings > Privacy and pick the Blocking tab on the left this time. Find the Block app invites section, click Edit , and enter the name of any friend who's invited you incessantly. You'll automatically block all game requests from them in the future. This won't affect any other interactions with them on Facebook.

If you'd like, you can also enter an app's name in the Block apps field. This will prevent it from contacting you and using your non-public Facebook information. If desired, use the other fields here to granularly block people on Facebook through various channels.

8. Change the Facebook Interface to Your Liking

You can't change many interface elements of Facebook through the default options. If you want to take your Facebook customization to the next level, you'll need to install a Facebook-transforming browser extension .

The best one is Social Fixer . It's available as a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Opera. Once you install Social Fixer, it makes several improvements out of the box.

To tweak how it runs, click the wrench icon that it shows in the upper-right corner of every Facebook page, followed by Social Fixer Options on the resulting menu, to customize your Facebook experience.

Social Fixer offers too many options to cover here, but the highlights include:

  • Automatically enable Most Recent view in your News Feed ( General tab).
  • Use Ctrl + Enter instead of Enter to submit comments ( General tab).
  • Enable the Friend Manager to get alerts when people unfriend you ( General tab).
  • Use the Hide Posts tab to hide any updates with certain words.
  • Try some pre-made Filters to weed out politics, spoilers, and more.
  • Check Display Tweaks to hide some annoying interface elements.

Dig into the Social Fixer options and you'll find many more ways to change the most annoying parts of Facebook.

Solutions for Common Facebook Errors

To wrap up, let's go over some tips for common Facebook errors you might run into.

9. You Forgot Your Facebook Password

Forgetting your Facebook login information is one of the most common issues people run into. We've written a full guide on recovering your Facebook account if you can't log in . And if you think your Facebook account was hacked , you need to act quickly.

10. You Can't Connect to Facebook

Since Facebook is one of the biggest sites on the web, it rarely experiences an outage. So the next time you can't get on Facebook, the problem likely lies on your end. You should follow a few steps if you think Facebook is down :

  • Check a website like Down for Everyone to see if Facebook is really down. If it is, you can't do much more than wait.
  • Visit another website to make sure your connection is working. If not, follow our guide to fixing internet connection problems .
  • Clear your browser cache and cookies , or try to open Facebook in an incognito window or another browser. If this works, there may be something wrong with your current browser.
  • Disable any VPNs or tracker-blocking extensions you're using, then try to connect to Facebook again without them.
  • Reboot your PC and router.

These tips also come in handy for loading errors, like when the "see more" button is not working on Facebook, or a search says "More results may be available; see more when you're back online". Chances are that you have a problem with your browser or internet connection. Try rebooting your PC and signing into Facebook with another browser when this happens.

11. Facebook Says "There Was a Problem..."

A lot of Facebook's common errors start with "there was a problem," such as There was a problem following this profile or Sorry, there was a problem tagging someone in this post . Most of the time, these errors have to do with the privacy settings of the other account.

If you see these warnings, the other person might have blocked you on Facebook , turned off tagging, or otherwise changed their privacy options. You can check with them if you're not sure, though that might be awkward.

When you get messages like this, make sure you've done basic Facebook troubleshooting too. Refresh the page, try logging out and back in, and make sure you don't have a network issue, as described above. If you're comfortable with it, try asking a mutual friend if they have the same problem. This can confirm your suspicions that you've been blocked or otherwise restricted.

How to Fix Facebook Problems Easily

We've shared fixes for some of the most common Facebook problems and errors. By flipping the right settings or using powerful extensions, you can make Facebook a more pleasant experience for yourself.

There are lots of other aspects of Facebook to master, so make sure you know how to put its various elements to use.

  • If certain Facebook pages won't work or you can't access the site at all, there are several ways to troubleshoot.
  • Try refreshing your browser or reopening the site; on a mobile app, close and reopen the app.
  • Also check to see if Facebook is down and then restart your device, clear your cache, and update the app.

Insider Today

Facebook is "Internet Home Base" for many people, the first stop to see what's happening in family and friends' lives. But whether you access Facebook on desktop , on your phone or on a tablet, sometimes the social media site doesn't work the way it should. If you are having problems with Facebook, here are seven common ways to troubleshoot and solve your problem.

Refresh your browser

If you're viewing Facebook in a web browser, the first thing you should try is to refresh the page using the Reload button at the top of the browser window. If that doesn't work, close the browser tab and open Facebook in a new browser tab or window.

Check to see if Facebook is down

It's possible that the problem isn't at your end — the entire site might be down, or at least substantial parts of it. You can quickly find out the status of Facebook by searching for "Is Facebook down" in a web browser or checking Facebook's status at DownDetector .

Clear your browser's cache

If you're having trouble with Facebook, or just reaching certain pages on Facebook, your browser's cache might need to be cleared. It only takes a few clicks to clear your browser's cache, and it might solve a Facebook connection issue. Beware, though: Clearing the cache will log you out of any websites you use, so you'll need to log back in the next time you visit.

For details on how to clear your cache, here is how to do that in Chrome , Safari, Firefox , and Microsoft Edge .

Close and reopen the app

If you're using the Facebook app on your iPhone, Android, iPad or other tablet, it's possible the app is suffering from some sort of a software glitch. You can often get back on track by closing the app and then reopening it. As a reminder, here is how to close an app on your iPhone . The technique to close apps on Android varies from model to model, but here is how to do it on a Samsung Galaxy phone.

Restart your device

Sometimes you can resolve an issue with Facebook by restarting your device. Turning the device off and back on again eliminates any glitches that might reside in memory and lets all the software start fresh.

As a reminder, here is how to restart an iPhone . If you have an Android device, you can restart most models by pressing and holding the power button until you see a screen with a Power off or Shut down button, then tap it to complete the shutdown.

Update or reinstall your app

If you still can't get Facebook to work and you're on a mobile device, you can try to update the app. Facebook might be misbehaving simply because the app is out of date and suffering from a bug or an incompatibility. It's a good idea to leave automatic updates turned on. Here's how to turn on automatic updates on your iPhone or update apps on your Android phone .

Another option: uninstall the Facebook app entirely and then reinstall it from the app store for your iPhone or Android. Here's how to uninstall the Facebook app from your Android or iOS device. Afterward, install a fresh version from Google Play or the App Store .

Try using Facebook with a different browser or device

Finally, a common way to troubleshoot a computer problem is to see if you can reproduce the same issue elsewhere. If the iPhone Facebook app isn't working, for example, try using Facebook in the iPhone's Safari browser or in a browser on your computer. If it isn't working in Chrome on your PC, try opening the site in Firefox.

Consider using Facebook Lite

You may be experiencing issues with the regular Facebook app if your internet connectivity speed is slow. In that case, consider using Facebook Lite , which is smaller and lighter than the standard app. Facebook's parent company Meta markets Facebook Lite as being compatible with internet speeds as low as 2G, with a theoretical maximum download speed of 48 kB/s.

A few other possibilities

If there's a specific person you're suddenly unable to find on the social network, it's possible that they deactivated or deleted their Facebook account or that you've been blocked or you blocked them. You'll need to unblock someone on Facebook if you want to see their profile again.

Hopefully these troubleshooting tips will resolve your problem. Otherwise, there's an entire family of Facebook apps to communicate with others and keep you occupied while the OG is down!

I updated to Safari 14.1 (15611.1.21.161.5, 15611) and got a security update this morning before work. First, Youtube audio was stuttering. So I cleared the cache, history, and cookies as recommended in another thread. After reboot, Youtube is still stuttering, but also Facebook will not load. Could it be the update?

Here Are the First Week Numbers for Taylor Swift’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department'

This is Taylor's world and we're all just living in it.

To absolutely no one's surprise, Taylor Swift 's new album The Tortured Poets Department opened with an absolutely monster week.

Making its debut on the Billboard 200 one week after release, immediately soared to No. 1 on the chart with a huge 2.61 million equivalent album units earned, per Billboard . With 891.3 million official streams, the numbers mark the largest streaming week for an album ever, along with being Swift's second-largest debut week. Accompanying Tortured was surprise album, The Anthology , making Swift's latest release a double album.

Altogether, TTPD also becomes Swift's fourteenth chart-topper, following Fearless , Speak Now ,  Red, 1989 , Reputation , Lover, Folklore , Evermore , Fearless (Taylor's Version) , Red (Taylor's Version) , Midnights , Speak Now (Taylor's Version) and 1989 (Taylor's Version) .

Despite the huge week, the biggest U.S. sales week for an album is still held by Adele for her 2015 album, 25 .

Although Swift going No. 1 yet again might come as no surprise to diehard Swifties, the musician seemed surprised, tweeting "What do you MEAN," in response to the news.

She followed the post with a message about the support she's received and her excitement to return to stages on the next leg of The Eras Tour, scheduled to resume May 9th in Nanterre, France.

"My mind is blown. I’m completely floored by the love you’ve shown this album. 2.6 million ARE YOU ACTUALLY SERIOUS??" Swift wrote. "Thank you for listening, streaming, and welcoming Tortured Poets into your life. Feeling completely overwhelmed. I was already so fired up to get back to the tour but you doing THIS?? May 9th can’t come soon enough."

Friends of Max Azzarello, who set himself on fire outside Donald J. Trump’s trial, said he was a caring person whose paranoia had led him down a dark path.

Leaflets are scattered on the ground or fluttering in the air on a plaza that it partially closed off with metal barriers and yellow caution tape.

The journey that ended with a man setting himself on fire on Friday outside the Manhattan courthouse where Donald J. Trump was being tried seemed to have begun in Florida, with a series of increasingly bizarre outbursts.

Standing in the afternoon chill, the man, Max Azzarello, 37, of St. Augustine, Fla., threw pamphlets into the air before dousing himself with an accelerant and setting his body ablaze. The police hurried to extinguish the flames, and he was taken to a hospital burn unit, gravely injured. He died on Friday night.

The fire just a block or two from the courthouse appeared calculated to draw widespread attention, horrifying bystanders and temporarily overshadowing the momentous trial of a former president.

But a closer look at the path the man had traveled to this moment of self-destruction revealed a recent spiral into volatility, one marked by a worldview that had become increasingly confusing and disjointed — and appeared to be unattached to any political party. His social media postings and arrest records suggest the immolation stemmed instead from a place of conspiracy theories and paranoia.

Until last summer, Mr. Azzarello seemed to have lived a relatively quiet life. After high school, where he was a member of a bowling team, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2009, with degrees in anthropology and public policy.

As a student at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., where he received a master’s degree in city and regional planning in 2012, he was known for leaving supportive Post-it notes for classmates in the hallways and for his karaoke performances of Frank Sinatra and Disney tunes, said a former classmate, Katie Brennan.

“He was super curious about social justice and the way things ‘could’ be,” Ms. Brennan said. “He was creative and adventurous.”

He began a career in which, according to his LinkedIn profile, he moved among jobs in marketing, sales and technology. In 2013, he worked on the campaign of Representative Tom Suozzi of Long Island, who was then running for Nassau County executive.

An old friend from high school, Steven Waldman, called Mr. Azzarello one of the smartest people he knew.

“He was a good friend and person and cared about the world,” he said.

But there was cause for concern, too.

By last year, he had apparently settled in St. Augustine, where he lived in a modest apartment near the Matanzas River in that historic city. He was a pleasant if sometimes peculiar neighbor.

“An extremely nice person,” said Larry Altman, the property manager at his apartment building, who added: “He had political views that I would not consider mainstream. He called our government and the world government a Ponzi scheme.”

But there were no signs that he was harboring an urge to harm himself, Mr. Altman said.

“If you met Max, he’d shake your hand, and you’d have a nice conversation,” he said. “He’d treat you with respect.”

He was clearly deeply affected by the loss of his mother, however. Elizabeth Azzarello died on April 6, 2022, near Sea Cliff, N.Y., on Long Island, where she had fought pulmonary disease, Mr. Azzarello wrote on Instagram in April 2022.

“I am immensely proud to say that she navigated the awful challenges of this disease with strength, dignity and spirit through the very end,” he wrote.

After this loss, his old friends saw a change. “That was around the time when he became more outspoken,” Mr. Waldman said. “They were close, and they had a good relationship. He was heartbroken.”

By the following year, the clarity Mr. Azzarello had shown in writing of his grief was gone, and a troubled image emerged.

In March 2023, he listed his profession on LinkedIn as “Research Investigator,” self-employed. In June of that year, he tagged Ms. Brennan and several others to make sure they had seen something he had written. She described it as a “manifesto” and called him immediately and tried to intervene. Eventually she wrote to one of his family members to make sure that they were aware that he was in crisis, she said.

About five months later, in early August 2023, he posted on Facebook about visiting a mental health treatment facility: “Three days in the psych ward, and all I got were my new favorite socks.”

Days later, in picturesque St. Augustine, he went for dinner at the Casa Monica Hotel on Cordova Street. Afterward, Mr. Azzarello walked into the lobby, approached an autograph left by former President Bill Clinton, who had signed the wall several years earlier, and threw a glass of wine at it, the police said. He admitted what he had done to officers, the police said. The episode was most likely written off as one man’s bad night.

Two days later, he was back, standing outside the hotel in just his underwear, ranting and cursing into a bullhorn, the police said. And just three days after that, he vandalized a sign outside a nearby United Way office before climbing into the bed of a stranger’s truck and rifling its contents, the police said.

All these events played out within walking distance of the apartment where even his most far-afield views had only recently been delivered politely.

In the months that followed, Mr. Azzarello promoted his disjointed preoccupations in a document he posted on Facebook. The pages attacked fascism and the general complacency of the public. They espoused general anti-government sentiment but did not seem directed at a discernible political party.

“Like frogs in water coming to a boil, the public didn’t notice the rotten truth behind the illusion of freedom,” the writings state. The man who had written fondly of his mother just a year earlier — “gracious and warm, silly and catty, compassionate and supportive” — and their time together seemed to have disappeared.

His greatest vexation appeared to be cryptocurrency, which he cast as a threat to humanity.

It was unclear when he arrived in New York, taking a room at the Soho 54 Hotel on Watts Street in Lower Manhattan and making his way to the running sideshow outside the downtown criminal courthouse.

The area he chose, Collect Pond Park, has been an on-and-off stage for supporters and opponents of Mr. Trump for months. Mr. Azzarello was there by Thursday, holding a sign and speaking in ways that, perhaps bizarre elsewhere, fit in with the disparate voices of the park.

On Friday, the crowd in the park had thinned. At about 1:35 p.m., people began to scream. A blur followed: a man on fire, bright flames licking his clothing and hair; officers scrambling over barricades; a departing ambulance.

His oldest friends were left struggling to make sense of this act.

“He was kind and a gentle soul,” said Carol Waldman, the mother of his childhood friend. “A real wonderful, terrific young guy. Who had his whole life ahead of him.”
