Stevie Nicks setlist: Here are all the songs on her can't-miss US tour

fleetwood mac tour stevie nicks

NEW YORK — Stevie Nicks will always be the coolest person in any room.

On Sunday night, rock's high priestess made Madison Square Garden her church with an electrifying, funny and at times heartbreaking sold-out concert. Wearing a black, billowing dress — her mic stand sparkling with beads and ribbons — Nicks delivered some of her best-loved hits with regal grace and bewitching power, including "Bella Donna," "Stand Back" and "Edge of Seventeen."

In between each song, the singer candidly regaled stories to the audience with self-deprecating humor and wistful wisdom: recalling her "incredible crush on Tom Petty" that led to "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," and how "Fall From Grace" is the closest thing she's written to "a real serious argument." And although you'd never know it, she talked about feeling intense stage fright, returning to headline the iconic Garden for the first time since 2016.

"I've been here before, but it doesn't ever get old in the way of you saying, 'Oh, Madison Square Garden, no problem,'" Nicks said early in the evening. "It's such an amazing place that you’re a little scared. And I'm fearless – I'm never scared – but I'm scared right now. So anyways, let's just get this party started!"

'They helped her have my soul': Stevie Nicks enters the Barbie zeitgeist with her own doll

The night's biggest tearjerkers were Nicks' emotional encore tributes to Petty and Fleetwood Mac member Christine McVie , singing "Free Fallin'" and "Landslide" accompanied by pictures of the late musicians. She also had the crowd in stitches mid-show as she gleefully played with her Stevie Barbie doll, which she told USA TODAY about in a new interview .

"Thank you for indulging me and my little guilty pleasure," Nicks said onstage. "And now, moving on from Barbie Land and back to Stevie Land."

Nicks, 75, last released an album of all-original music with 2011's "In Your Dreams," while 2014's "24 Karat Gold" featured new versions of old demos. She is playing nearly two dozen shows across the U.S. through next March, some of which with Billy Joel .

Stevie Nicks' tour setlist:

  • "Outside the Rain"
  • "If Anyone Falls"
  • "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around"
  • "Fall From Grace"
  • "For What It's Worth"
  • "Wild Heart"
  • "Bella Donna"
  • "Stand Back"
  • "Soldier's Angel"

Stevie Nicks says Fleetwood Mac won’t tour again after death of Christine McVie

Singer says ‘we really can’t go any further with this – there’s no reason to’ when asked about future of band

Stevie Nicks has said Fleetwood Mac will not tour again after the death of Christine McVie in November 2022.

In an interview with Vulture , she referred to the band’s 2018 tour, An Evening With Fleetwood Mac. “We had a really great time and it was a huge tour. That was there in the realm of possibility. But when Christine died, I felt like you can’t replace her. You just can’t. Without her, what is it?” Nicks said.

“Who am I going to look over to on the right and have them not be there behind that Hammond organ? When she died, I figured we really can’t go any further with this. There’s no reason to.”

Mick Fleetwood has previously suggested that the band could be finished, saying in February: “I truly think the line in the sand has been drawn with the loss of Chris. I’d say we’re done, but then we’ve all said that before.”

Announcing the An Evening With Fleetwood Mac tour, McVie had said it could be the band’s last: “The 2018 tour is supposed to be a farewell tour, but you take farewell tours one at a time. Somehow we always come together, this unit.” She had stopped touring with the group in 1998 due to developing a phobia of flying, but rejoined in 2013.

She died in 2022 after a short illness. Nicks paid tribute at the time, writing that McVie reminded audiences “that love is all around us to reach for and touch in this precious life … Part of my heart has flown away today.”

Continuing her reminiscence of McVie with Vulture, Nicks said: “She was like my soul mate, my musical soul mate, and my best friend that I spent more time with than any of my other best friends outside of Fleetwood Mac. Christine was my best friend. When I think about Taylor Swift’s song You’re on Your Own, Kid and the line ‘you always have been,’ it was like, that was Christine and I. We were on our own in that band. We always were. We protected each other.”

Nicks is on a solo tour of the US, including a number of dates alongside Billy Joel billed as Two Icons, One Night; her tour was recently extended into 2024. In July, she released a 16 LP box set of her studio albums alongside newly released rarities.

This week, she has also unveiled a collaboration with Mattel on a Barbie doll made in her likeness, wearing the floating black dress she is pictured in on the cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours. “When I look at her, I see my 27-year-old self,” she said in a statement. “What we have been through since 1975 – the battles we have fought, the lessons we have learned together. I am her and she is me. She absolutely has my heart.”

Stevie Nicks On Turning 60, Fleetwood Mac’s New Tour

By Austin Scaggs

Austin Scaggs

‘I t still gives me goose bumps, and it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up,” says Stevie Nicks , who is eagerly anticipating the first Fleetwood Mac tour in five years, which kicks off on March 1st in Pittsburgh. And later in the month, Nicks is releasing a DVD, Live in Chicago, and a concert CD, The Soundstage Sessions. With her dog barking in the background, Nicks checks in from her home in Los Angeles: “We still feel like Fleetwood Mac have a lot to give to the world. In this time of trouble and turmoil, I think the world needs Fleetwood Mac.”

What’s the latest from the Mac rehearsals? I don’t want to give the set list away, but it’s pretty exciting. The fact that we haven’t been on tour since 2004 makes every song sound fresh. It’s just bang, bang, bang – all fantastic songs. We always start with the staples: “Go Your Own Way,” “Gold Dust Woman,” “Rhiannon” and “Dreams.” We will play one song we’ve never done at all. If I were going to see Fleetwood Mac, this is definitely the set I’d want to see. It’s like a big steam locomotive that doesn’t stop until we walk offstage.

How are you getting along with Lindsey Buckingham ? When Lindsey and I aren’t getting along, nobody’s getting along. We haven’t had one disagreement since we started rehearsing. And instead of treating me like his miserable old ex, he’s treating me like his difficult but beloved older daughter. He’s been very sweet.

How often do you speak with Christine McVie ? We check in with each other, but we can’t hang out, because she lives in England, and she won’t fly. The only time I’ve seen Chris since 1998 was when we did three nights in London in 2003. I miss her every day. But we’ve all finally started to accept that nothing could make Chris go back out on the road.

Last May you turned 60. How do you feel about that? I don’t feel any different at 60 than I felt at 50. Age is a state of mind. You can either get old or not get old.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

On the “Live in Chicago” DVD you’re joined by Vanessa Carlton on a couple of songs. What other artists of her generation do you mentor? I love Vanessa – I feel like she’s an adopted child, in a way. And Michelle Branch and I had dinner the night before last. I have a lot of information for all of these women. I should do a “Dear Stevie” column in Rolling Stone . When Mariah Carey was going through all her craziness a few years ago, I wrote her a long letter telling her how everybody else is crazy – not her. I saw her recently, and she told me she keeps the letter with her jewelry! I love that.

What’s wrong with the record business today? The Internet has destroyed it. I miss buying an album and lying on the floor for three days and going over it with a magnifying glass. I still go to the record store and spend hours there and buy a big bag of CDs. I don’t have a computer or a cellphone, because I don’t want to be that available to anybody. I’m all about mystery. Little girls think it’s necessary to put all their business on MySpace and Facebook, and I think it’s a shame.

You’ve always made mixtapes on cassette. Do you still do that? That’s how I do it. Cassettes sound so much better. And I’m deaf as a doornail, so I like to crank my little boombox.

What songs are worthy of a Stevie Nicks mixtape? I was just in Hawaii, and I made a mix called “Lahaina Twilight.” It’s got songs by the Goo Goo Dolls, Jackson Browne , Sting , Coldplay , Tom Petty , the Fray, Snow Patrol.

What albums do you lore in their entirety? I don’t, usually. In the beginning, I was inspired by songwriters like Jackson Browne, David Crosby, the Eagles , Neil Young , Buffalo Springfield – those are the people I learned from. And I probably listened to Joni Mitchell ‘s For the Roses , Blue and Court and Spark a hundred million times. But now, I can’t listen to a whole album unless it’s a Fleetwood Mac record, where I made sure that every song is spectacular. Sequencing is my forte. I sequenced Rumours . Lindsey doesn’t like to admit it, but he will admit it.

Last year, Sheryl Crow claimed that she would be part of the 2009 Fleetwood Mac tour, but Buckingham later denied it. What really happened? It was absolutely discussed and she was absolutely invited to join. The reason was because I missed Christine [McVie] so much, and I wanted another woman in the band – it’s hard to be in the boys’ club. I explained to Sheryl what it was like to be in the group – that it’s all-encompassing. Like, on 2003’s Say You Will tour, we went out expecting to do 40 shows, and it turned into 135 shows. So Sheryl called me and said, “I’ll have to pass.” As Stevie Nicks, I was disappointed. As her friend, I told her she made the right decision. Sheryl Crow passed on Fleetwood Mac – I want that out there.

The battle over classic rock band the guess who just went nuclear, norm macdonald was the hater o.j. simpson could never outrun, jellyroll vs. jelly roll: pennsylvania band sues country star for trademark infringement.

What are the origins of your patented onstage twirl? A lot of ballet and a lot of dance. I wanted to be a ballerina, but I realized I was not going to be Pavlova, so I became a rock singer instead.

The Meaning Behind Stevie Nicks' Heartbreaking Fleetwood Mac Song 'Landslide'

Here's everything to know about the backstory behind the Fleetwood Mac song written by Stevie Nicks

Stevie Nicks ' hit "Landslide" has resonated with listeners since its release in 1975.

The songstress has already established a legacy rooted in her captivating vocals and songwriting, both as a soloist and band member of Fleetwood Mac .

Among her many iconic songs , the 1975 hit "Landslide" — which was first featured on the band's self-titled album Fleetwood Mac that same year — is considered to be one of Nicks' most significant releases of all time.

Related: Stevie Nicks: Fleetwood Mac 'Can't Go Any Further' Without the Late Christine McVie

Nicks' 1975 version of "Landslide" topped numerous charts, including Billboard 's Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary's Top 10. In 2021, it was listed at No. 163 on Rolling Stone 's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

Between the Smashing Pumpkins' cover of "Landslide" in 1994 and The Chicks' (then the Dixie Chicks ) chart-topping country rendition in 2002, the song has touched a wide range of musicians in a diverse array of genres.

While Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac as a vocalist in the '70s, her impact on the music scene has impacted a generation of modern hit-makers . Miley Cyrus notably performed a cover of "Landslide" at the 2018 MusiCares Person of the Year benefit to honor Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, and several artists have expressed their admiration for the legendary singer in the years that followed, including Harry Styles , Haim and Taylor Swift .

Read on to learn about the behind-the-scenes stories and meaning behind "Landslide."

Who wrote Fleetwood Mac's song "Landslide"?

Though "Landslide" was originally released on Fleetwood Mac's self-titled album in 1975, Nicks is the only credited songwriter on the track.

Bandmate and Nicks' then-boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham , however, provided some overdubs and a solo on the studio version — but aside from that, the song is completely Nicks' own.

When was Fleetwood Mac's song "Landslide" written?

Prior to joining Fleetwood Mac — which only consisted of Mick Fleetwood , Christine McVie and John McVie at the time — in 1975, Nicks began her music career with Buckingham as a folk-rock duo.

In 1973, the pair signed a record deal with Polydor Records. They released their eponymous debut album, Buckingham Nicks , that same year. However, the project was not a commercial success and the two were dropped from the label.

Coming off a record that saw little sales, Nicks picked up several jobs but continued to make music and write songs. Meanwhile, Buckingham was invited to play guitar on tour with the Everly Brothers.

It wasn't until Fleetwood Mac's drummer and co-founder, Fleetwood, was searching for a vocalist-guitarist replacement that he approached Buckingham to join his rock band. Upon joining the band officially, Buckingham made it clear that he and Nicks were a package deal.

In 1975, Fleetwood Mac released Nicks' "Landslide," featured on their second self-titled album (the first with Nicks and Buckingham as part of the band), that in part contributed to Fleetwood Mac becoming one of the band's greatest albums of all time .

What is Fleetwood Mac's song "Landslide" about?

In 1973, Nicks traveled with Buckingham to Aspen, Colo., for a stop on the Everly Brothers' tour. Amid her feelings of frustration professionally and her slowly deteriorating relationship with Buckingham , "Landslide" was composed.

The song begins: "I took my love, I took it down / I climbed a mountain and I turned around."

Nicks told The New York Times that she wrote "Landslide" in 1973 when she was 27 years old. "I did already feel old in a lot of ways," Nicks told the outlet. "I'd been working as a waitress and a cleaning lady for years. I was tired."

Nicks — who has said she wrote the song in approximately five minutes while looking out her snowy window at the Aspen mountains — wrote, "And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills / Til the landslide brought me down."

The lyrics continue to explore Nicks' thoughts during that uncertain time of her career, in addition to her relationship with Buckingham. She compared the risks of an avalanche in the mountains to her own image and her current challenges.

"And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills / 'Til the landslide brought me down," the lyrics in the song's chorus read.

Stevie Nicks Refuses To Make Music With Fleetwood Mac Citing An Epic Financial Loss

There's a monetary reason why the face of Fleetwood Mac wants to stop recording with the band.

  • Stevie Nicks no longer wants to record new music with Fleetwood Mac.
  • Nicks recognizes the decline in album sales and feels that streaming platforms and a focus on younger artists.
  • Nicks will no longer tour with Fleetwood Mac after 2023.

Fleetwood Mac is one of the most iconic bands of the 1970s and 80s, and a large part of why it has been so successful is musician Stevie Nicks . While other band members have been huge contributors in terms of music and songwriting, Nicks is the one who sings the band's most iconic songs and embodies the cool, soft-rock Fleetwood Mac spirit.

Given how important Nicks is to Fleetwood Mac's success, it was shocking to many when she announced that she no longer wanted to record new music with the band in 2017. Why? Well, Nicks has a very specific reason, actually.

Stevie Nicks Won't Make A New Fleetwood Mac Album Because She Thinks It Won't Sell

Stevie Nicks knows how to make hits, as evidenced by the fact that Fleetwood Mac is one of the best-selling bands of all time, but she opted to draw a line in the sand after the release of the band's 2003 album, Say You Will.

fleetwood-mac-today-show

She told Evening Standard that she would not be open to making new music with the band because she felt it would be a waste of time and money . She broke down the resources that would go into getting all the band members back in the studio, and noted that they don't record music at the same rate they did in their prime:

"It would be a whole year of recording, then press... We know that unless you’re under 20 you’re not going to sell many records."

Nicks included herself in this critique, as she admitted to the outlet that she has a difficult time coming up with new song ideas because she's cognizant of the fact that albums are just not as impactful as they once were.

It's easy to understand Nicks' reluctance to dedicate a year of her life to a new album when one looks at the commercial decline of Fleetwood Mac albums between 1975 (when Nicks joined the band) to the present.

While their so-called classic albums continue to do well, recent releases like Time (1995) and the aforementioned Say You Will were met with mixed reviews and likewise sales.

Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks Rejected An Iconic Collaboration With Prince That Could've Made Her Millions

Meanwhile, Fleetwood Mac tours continued to be big earners for Nicks and the rest of the band in the 21st century. According to Pollstar, 2009's Unleashed Tour grossed $84.9 million worldwide.

Stevie Nicks Claimed That Streaming Hurt The Band's Ability To Sell Albums

Stevie Nicks and the rest of Fleetwood Mac did not make albums cheaply or quickly. Their 1979 release, Tusk, was the most expensive album of all time upon its release, and Nicks maintains that variables like youth and inexperience contributed to their willingness to experiment.

stevie-nicks-gma

As she asserted to the Evening Standard, the band has neither youth nor inexperience on its side anymore, which makes the incentive to record new music almost nonexistent:

"It’s every single penny we make divided by five, so the expense of making a record is huge. And then to get back on tour... We are not 40."

Nicks believes that Fleetwood Mac would not make a splash with new music because of the way the music industry is currently set up.

She claimed that streaming platforms have led to a drastic downturn in record sales, and the prioritization of music by younger artists, rather than legacy acts that have been around for decades:

"It goes against the grain of our whole belief in, 'You write a song, you record it, and you put it out there and people should buy it.'"

Nicks clarified that she does not expect to sell as many records in the 2020s as she did when she was in her 20s, but that she feels less compelled to write and record new material that will, in her opinion, fall on deaf ears.

Was This Stevie Nicks Love Song The Final Push Toward Her Fleetwood Mac Exit

Nicks told the outlet that she would continue to play old songs with Fleetwood Mac in concert, and spearheaded the band's 2018 tour, but this compromise proved to be short-lived for both Nicks and the fans.

Stevie Nicks Claimed She Would No Longer Tour With Fleetwood Mac As Of 2023

Fleetwood Mac was a famously volatile band, with various members engaging in romantic relationships and breaking up while they were recording albums. That said, the members of the band have historically been on the same page when it comes to recognizing what the fans want to see.

It was important to give listeners the interplay between Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham, who was fired from the band in 2018, just as it was crucial to comfort fans after the death of band member Christine McVie in November 2022.

fleetwood-mac-hall-fame

Stevie Nicks, who had previously voiced enthusiasm over touring, told Vulture that she would no longer be performing with Fleetwood Mac. Her reasoning was that things would not feel the same without McVie's presence:

When [Christine] died, I figured we really can’t go any further with this. There’s no reason to.”

Nicks' comments were validated when the band's founder, Mick Fleetwood, told The Guardian that he considered the band to be "done" without McVie, who many considered to be the glue that kept the other members together.

Fleetwood Mac did, however, give fans a condolense prize a year after McVie's death. While the band was effectively defunct, and Nicks' assertion that there would be no more new music held strong, Warner Records put out a concert album titled Rumours Live that captured the band at its 1970s peak.

Stevie Nicks Refuses To Play This One Tragic Song Live, And Fans Don't Blame Her

Stevie Nicks reflected on the album, and the band as a whole, during an interview with ABC News. She acknowledged the hectic nature of her personal life, but maintained that she was actually excited by the recording process back then:

"If anything was keeping us from falling apart, it was going into the studio every day. And we were totally having a great time."

Fans may never get to hear new Fleetwood Mac songs, but Nicks and the rest of the band have left behind a legacy that's undeniable.

''Landslide'' by Fleetwood Mac lyrics

I took my love, I took it down I climbed a mountain and I turned around And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills 'Til the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky What is love? Can the child within my heart rise above? Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides? Can I handle the seasons of my life?

Well, I've been afraid of changin' 'Cause I've built my life around you But time makes you bolder Even children get older And I'm getting older too

Well, I've been afraid of changin' 'Cause I've built my life around you But time makes you bolder Even children get older And I'm getting older too Oh! I'm getting older too
