Flogging Molly (formed in 1997) is a seven-piece Irish-punk band from Los Angeles, California, U.S., singed to their own label Borstal Beat Records.

Dublin born lead singer Dave King prior to forming Flogging Molly had been in a number of bands including Fastway, which featured Motörhead guitarist “Fast” Eddie Clarke and UFO bassist Pete Way, and the hard rock band Katmandu formed in 1991.

1993 brought King and a number of musicians together at a pub in Los Angeles, U.S. called ‘Molly Malones' where they would play a mix of traditional Celtic music and rock. However it wasn’t until the current line-up of King, fiddle player Bridget Regan, guitarist Dennis Casey, bassist Nathan Maxwell, drummer George Schwindt, accordion player (and former pro skateboarder) Matt Hensley and mandolinist Bob Schmidt got together that the band really found its feet.

Known for their distinctive fusion of traditional Irish music and often abrasive hard-hitting punk rock, their impassioned live show won the attention of of SideOneDummy Records. The band’s March 2000 debut album “Swagger” received positive reviews and was referred to as ‘music that’s perfect for any barroom brawl’. Its follow up “Drunken Lullabies” reached No. 157 on the Billboard 200 and Gold status and the title track featured on the video game Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4.

The source of many of the lyrics are drawn from the youth of lead singer Dave King, introducing themes of war-torn Ireland, his Father’s premature death and his move to the United States at just eight years old.

Flogging Molly later released the studio albums “Within a Mile of Home”, “Float” and “Speed of Darkness”, along with the live album entitled “Alive Behind the Green Door” and two live DVDs “Whiskey on a Sunday” and “Live At The Greek Theatre”.

The band has gone on to sell in excess of a million and a half records, successfully toured around much of the world and are expected to release their long awaited follow-up to “Speed of Darkness” in 2015.

Live reviews

We've seen Flogging Molly 13 times now, and we never miss a show on our home turf, never off the front row. They are masters of the stage, every member!

Dave King channels an Irish Johnny Cash as he dances across the stage, strumming the strings off his guitar or playing his bodhran. He interacts with each member during songs and then has a piece to say between each tune that'll either make you laugh out loud or cheer in agreement.

All of the other members are all over the map too, always smiling, dueling with other members or getting the audience psyched up. George sits in the back, unrelentingly pounding out the galloping beats that make the concert feel like you were dropped into the middle of a drunken Irish dance party!

If you want the best experience, I highly suggest you come early and get on the front row for the opening acts (Flogging Molly openers are always diverse, and always awesome!) all the way through the final encore. There's nothing like bouncing up and down with a mob of fans to Tobacco Island or Seven Deadly Sins, face to face with Dave or Nate or any of the band while they pour their blood, sweat and tears into their music!

You'll leave exhausted, covered in everyone else's sweat, possible headache from the random crowd-surfer, but grinning from ringing-ear to ringing-ear like a village idiot! I still believe, even after going to more than 150 concerts, that a Flogging Molly show is the most fun you can have at a live show.

Also make sure you hang around after the encore as the band members often come out and wander the crowd, meeting, taking pictures, signing autographs. They're very genuine people, and they truly love their fans.

I love The Fox. It's close to my Oakland home, lots of free street parking and 1 block from BART. It's beautiful inside with giant Buddha reliefs watching the crowd with glowing eyes.

It's also Flogging Molly's preferred venue when in the Bay Area.

If you haven't seen a Flogging Molly show you have really missed out on something special. It's a Pogues + The Clash at 78 RPM. There are fiddles, accordions, mandolins and boghrans. The whole front section turns into a friendly and fierce mosh pit. At this show a girl in a wheelchair was lifted up and crowd-surfed to the stage where she was invited to park next to the band.

Saying the music is high energy is like saying Iron Man has some metal bits in his costume. It's a non-stop barrage of Irish punk-folk, inspiring epic sing-alongs and hook-laden earworms.

The opening band was Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls. If the headliner wasn't Flogging Molly they would have stolen the show. I have no idea why I have never heard of this band. Emotionally-charged, hook-laden, anthemic songs of strength and despair. When they finished their set I had that feeling you get when the headliner has done their encores and it's time to go home. I ended up buying one of his records at the merch booth (I love how artists have started bringing vinyl to their shows).

I would have to rank this show as one of my top-ten best concerts ever.

Flogging Molly is the quintessential Irish punk band from, bizarrely enough, Los Angeles in California, USA. Perhaps it is because lead singer Dave King’s, born in Dublin, vocals are not melodic enough to even begin to hide the strong Irish accent, or perhaps it is because there is a faint touch of traditional Irish folk to Flogging Molly’s otherwise very grunge, punk rock style. Either way, the boys are loveably Irish and gloriously punk with only a hint of Celtic twist about them. A twist that makes all the difference to their music, in terms of standout originality. Dave King and the rest of the boys can certainly put on a show and are well received wherever they go, be it Ireland, England or the USA. King prances around the stage like an Irish Jonny Cash, dancing wildly and strumming the strings off his guitar. Bridget Regan captivates on the fiddle, bringing a brilliant Irish quirk to the line up, drummer George Schwindt sets the tone and gets the audience pumped with his heavy beats and accordion player Matt Hensley together with mandolinist Bob Schmidt delight the crowd with the louder than life, unique instrumentals.

I've seen Flogging Molly 6 times in Croatia, once in Slovenia and this is the 2nd time in Austria and I must say it was one of their best performances. In every show, except Austria shows I've seen, I've been in the first row. This time I had the seating tickets. The experience with entering and finding the seats was easy, the staff is helpful, the view from the balcony and the sound were really good. We could see the bands and the crowd well and they were all wild and in good mood. Mosh pit looked great and the rowing choreography at Float was spectacular. I kinda liked the choice for the opening act - Buster Shuffle. Flogging Molly put up a powerful performance and quite sentimental speeches in between song, dedicating Spoken Wheel + Black Friday Rule to his late dad and his son as well as Life is Good to his now late mom. Despite me not being a fan of the last album, the set-list was great and I wish I was in the first row for this concert, although I'm very glad for the opportunity to even see it - the concert was sold out a few days before.

Remember, whatever we do, we're just dancers on the devil's dancefloor ;)

Flogging Molly, masters of the bizarre genre known as irish punk have an energetic, stomping live show that has kept fans coming back again and again since the band began in 1997. Having now released five albums, the last two have gained commercial success in their homeland yet their setlist draws from all aspects of the band's long career.

From the opening violin notes that fill the entire venue, the audience are stamping their feet and clapping along as the seven piece appear onstage to the sound of rapturous applause. Playing an upbeat, pulsating version of 'Screaming at the Wailing Wall' and 'Every Dog Has Its Day' sets the tone perfectly for the gig.

The band is made up of seven eccentric musicians who are all equally good showmen so they have no problem enthusing the crowds for the older singles including 'Salty Dog' and 'Float'. The whole crowd are involved in the show throughout so there is plenty of sing and stamp-alongs with the jovial Irish influences. Flogging Molly leaves the audience having known that they had really brought the party.

These guys kill it. I've seen them twice now and they put on a helluva show. They have so much energy it is amazing. My only real beef is with the crowd. I've been to too many shows to count and I am always in the front row. Both times at the Flogging Molly shows one in Papillon and one in Omaha. The front row just stands there like zombies. I mean the front row of a Phish show has more life. Love the band to death but their fans need to get out of the front if they are not going to give energy back to the band. GO STAND IN THE BACK WITH YOUR ARMS CROSSED AND LET THE CRAZY PEOPLE GO CRAZY UP FRONT!!!!!

Amazing show and wonderful performance! Mosh is rowdy and some people were absolutely rude, but the fans were great at helping each other when in need. I saw so many people fall and each time other attendees would form a barrier around so nobody was stepped on but rather was lifted back on their feet. Tons of tough ladies and some gents looking out for other young/small women, too. Overall pleasant experience; make sure your body is ready and you have comfortable and secure shoes if you plan to jump around in the pit! Flogging Molly is a blast live!

I've seen Flogging Molly twice, on 8/1/16 and 5/6/17, both in Seattle at Showbox Sodo. They were both such amazing shows. The set lists were pretty similar and some of the stage banter was the same, but I didn't care. You might expect a band that is constantly touring to lose some of their energy, but Dave and the rest are always so enthusiastic. Flogging Molly has the honor of being my very first concert, and I am so glad they are. I'm going to see them anytime they are in Seattle for a very long time.

Their performance was incredible. I almost talked myself out of going, but I am so glad I went! They played some classic songs and some favorites.

Mosh Pit: A

Great attitude in the pit but we had more space than necessary however no one was carted off so that is a big plus!

Most everyone was there to have a good time, one guy got upset because I stepped on his foot, tried to apologize but it was very loud. 10/10 would step on a foot accidentally again.

dustin-dougherty-1’s profile image

Gig was good but the fact that the security was asking is to stop filming was just a bad experience; specially when you come from another country and you have waited for over 25 years to see them for the first time; security said it was the band manager, if so he should realize that the bands are there because of us (the public) and for us.

I was gonna buy merchandise as I always do, but this experience just put me off from doing it.

A total disappointment.

Flogging Molly Book 2022 St. Patrick’s Day Tour

We may be just hitting the winter months, but it's never too early to start thinking about St. Patrick's Day. In that spirit, it's time to rub your four-leaf clover in hopes that you'll be able to score Flogging Molly tickets for their annual St. Patrick's Day tour that's set for next March.

The band just announced the 14-date run that is highlighted by the group taking over their hometown Hollywood Palladium on the actual St. Patrick's Day (March 17). Russkaja and Vandoliers will be the support acts on all of the upcoming dates.

“Being able to announce a return to the Hollywood Palladium for St. Patrick’s Day is a happy thing indeed,” says singer Dave King. “We can’t wait to be back in Los Angeles where it all began.”

And if the tour wasn't enough celebrating for you, if you've already got your reservation you can join Flogging Molly aboard the recently sold out edition of their Salty Dog Cruise , which sets sail out of Miami on March 28 with special guests the Descendents, the Distillers, Frank Turner, Agent Orange and more.

One other piece of good news is that Flogging Molly are currently working on the follow-up to their 2017 album, Life Is Good, so there could be the possibility of new music when the tour kicks off next March.

Tickets for Flogging Molly's St. Patrick's Day tour will go on sale this Friday (Dec. 17) at 10AM local time, though there are pre-sales launching this Tuesday (Dec. 14) at 10AM local time as well. See the tour stops listed below and get ticketing info here .

LIVE REVIEW: Flogging Molly 2023 Winter Tour

Irish American Celtic punk band Flogging Molly are in the midst of their North American Winter Tour 2023, with help from Skinny Lister and Anti-Flag. Ultimate punk rock party came to Montclair New Jersey on a beautiful but little chilly Saturday night. However, the amount of beer and dancing made outside cold irrelevant.

Written by Andris Jansons

As soon as you stepped inside the venue, you immediately understood that you were here to party. British folk punk band Skinny Lister got the party going with lively performance that included a lot of dancing, drinking and liberal use of nsfw language. Songs performed included Hamburg Drunk, Company At The Bar and a new song Down On The Barrier. Bands vocalist Lorna Thomas did some crazy acrobatics on her high heel shoes, and offered some free classes for those willing to learn after the set. While for me this was absolutely first time seeing and hearing Skinny Lister, and my personal thoughts are that they play wonderful and uplifting music to have a party to, I will pass on the judgement call to a punk rock specialist and New Rock City punk rock music festival organizer Stephen Moss who was also in the attendance : “I never thought I’d see a musician jump off stage and play an accordion in the crowd like rockstars do at a rock show. Not only that, Skinny Lister had a bass player who played a stand up bass and he would twirl it around like a guitar! This band has such an amazing stage presence. In fact, the female singer even came off stage to arm wrestle me and two other guys in the front row! Their music was great and totally fit the theme of Celtic Punk. They opened up for Anti-Flag and Flogging Molly and totally matched their level.” Well, if that does not get you in Skinny Lister mood, I don’t what will.

Next band on the bill was American punk rock band Anti-Flag from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. If you look at Skinny Lister and Flogging Molly, then inclusion of Anti-Flag would prompt some questions as their music style is more traditional hard hitting punk rock with no elements of folk. Anti-Flag musical message is very political and is strongly left leaning and the band is also known for its advocacy of progressive political movements such as Greenpeace, Amnesty International, and the Occupy movement. So how such a politically charged act would fit between two party animals. Well, absolutely seamlessly. The minute the band hit the stage the crowd got immersed in the aggressive style of bands music delivery. Within the second song the circle pit was open and the constant flow of crowd surfers began. While band toned down their left political message, they rather concentrated on what bot sides of political spectrum would agree – politicians lie and they use government to usurp power, need for equal rights and respect for everyone, and that is something we all get behind. Punk Rock unites not divides. My personal favorite was Die For The Government. That song was literally a bomb. Other songs performed were – The Fight Of Our Lives, The Press Corpse, This The End (For You My Friend) and many others. They also played a medley of some legendary punk rock tunes – Should I Stay Or Should I Go, Blitzkrieg Bop, God Save The Queen and others. Band wrapped their set with Victory Or Death (We Gave ‘Em Hell and Brandenburg Gate. And just like that one more time I go for the experts view from Stephen Moss : “Anti Flag. They came in like a brick to the face! They are the perfect blend of energy, anger, and a political message of equality and justice. They don’t shy away from uncomfortable topics and they love to get the conversation started by making you see what many choose to ignore. In today’s punk scene, you would be hard pressed to find a more honest, and in your face punk band.”

Just in time when beer started to take control of your mind, the ultimate Irish party started. Usually drum set podium is covered with water bottles for the band to drink during the show, but not for proper Irishman, as Guiness outnumbered water by 3 to 1 – at least. The band came on stage missing very important person – Bridget Regan, violinist and vocalist for the band and wife of the bands vocalist David King. Dave explained her absence to the crowd due to an accident she suffered while in Texas, and jokingly pointed to our own Stephen Moss and said: “Her shoulder is as stiff as this guy’s hair (Stephen sports a red mohawk)”. Their music is characterized as Celtic Punk – you know, you take punk rock and combine that with Celtic folk sounds and a lot of beer and you get some proper party Celtic punk rock music that is tons of fun.

The most represented album in their set was 2002 Drunken Lullabies (kind of explains why this felt like a party) – Swagger, The Kilburn High Road, If I Ever Leave This World Alive, What’s Left Of The Flag and title song. From their latest release Anthem, that saw daylight last year, Flogging Molly played four songs. And new material blended with their older one almost seamlessly.

One more time I turn to Stephen (you know, the guy with Mohawk), for his expert take: “Now that the crowd was emotionally ready to start gearing up and making Molotov cocktails, it was time to turn it down a couple of degrees. The headliner was Flogging Molly. They were a nice balance between the warm Irish drinking songs and the angst of punk rock. They lead the crowd in a “Fuck Putin” chant and played new songs as well as some from their first album. When you watch how enthusiastic and energetic they are, it’s hard to believe the singer is 61 years old! I’m 39 and I can’t move like that! Overall, those three bands went together perfectly! It was one amazing show!”

I could not agree more. This fantastic show will continue for one more month as it slowly heads West.

Flogging Molly is Dave King (lead vocals, acoustic guitar, bodhran), Bridget Regan (violin, tin whistle, vocals), Dennis Casey (guitar, vocals), Matt Hensley (accordion, concertina, vocals), Nathen Maxwell (bass guitar, vocals), Spencer Swain (mandolin, banjo, guitar, vocals), and Mike Alonso (drums, percussion).

Starting out as the house band for Molly Malone's in Los Angeles and building a loyal following through endless touring, Flogging Molly has become a staple in the punk scene over the past 20-plus years, kicking off with their riotous debut album, Swagger, and continuing through their six additional studio albums.

Flogging Molly's most recent album Anthem arrived in September 2022 via Rise Records and saw the band reunite with legendary engineer Steve Albini (who worked with Flogging Molly on their first two albums Swagger and Drunken Lullabies).

Brooklyn Vegan said Anthem is "a ripper," New Noise said Anthem "easily satisfies expectations the Celtic-inspired punks have built over a decades-long career," and American Songwriter triumphantly declared, "Flogging Molly is back."

The band released four videos in support of Anthem, including the timely track and clip for "A Song of Liberty," penned by King as a recounting of a dark period in Irish history but made all the more relevant with events in Ukraine. The Mad Twins, Ukrainian animators/filmmakers, created the stirring video.

On March 10, 2023 the band released a new, three-song, 'Til The Anarchy's Restored EP (Rise Records), featuring the previously unreleased title track and one-take performances of the band's classic songs: "Drunken Lullabies" and "What's Left of the Flag,". Recent touring has brought Flogging Molly to historic locations including Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater, and the band's annual St. Patrick's Day outing at the Hollywood Palladium (which sold out).

Flogging Molly also recently announced a late Spring European trek, with several festival performances amidst the month-long tour, including outings at Rock Am Ring, Rock Im Park, Hellfest, and both Slam Dunk Festivals. The band's annual Salty Dog Cruise sets sail November 8 and has already sold out, and will feature Pennywise, The Interrupters, Stiff Little Fingers and many more.

Brooklyn Vegan said Anthem is “a ripper,” New Noise said Anthem “easily satisfies expectations the Celtic-inspired punks have built over a decades-long career,” and American Songwriter triumphantly declared, “Flogging Molly is back.” The band released four videos in support of Anthem, including the timely track and clip for “A Song of Liberty,” penned by King as a recounting of a dark period in Irish history but made all the more relevant with events in Ukraine. The Mad Twins, Ukrainian animators/filmmakers, created the stirring video ( https://youtu.be/ccGKjOQsEp0 ). On March 10, 2023 the band released a new, three-song, ‘Til The Anarchy’s Restored EP (Rise Records), featuring the previously unreleased title track and one-take performances of the band’s classic songs: “Drunken Lullabies” and “What’s Left of the Flag,”. Recent touring has brought Flogging Molly to historic locations including Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater, and the band’s annual St. Patrick’s Day outing at the Hollywood Palladium (which sold out). Flogging Molly also recently announced a late Spring European trek, with several festival performances amidst the month-long tour, including outings at Rock Am Ring, Rock Im Park, Hell fest, and both Slam Dunk Festivals. The band’s annual Salty Dog Cruise sets sail November 8 and has already sold out, and will feature Pennywise, The Interrupters, Stiff Little Fingers and many more.
