The Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected game reserve on the African continent covering an area of 54,600 square kilometers comprised of a vast wilderness with forests, grassy plains, mountains and open woodlands. This reserve was named after Frederick Selous Courtney who was a great Hunter and explorer. Selous Safari Holidays are highly recommended as in size this reserve is twice the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and three times Kruger National Park in South Africa. This reserve was established in 1922, and in 1982 it was declared a UNESCO world heritage site thanks to its rich diversity of wildlife and uninterrupted nature. The Tanzanian national park authority (TANAPA) in 2019 proposed and declared a change of identity of the northern sector of this reserve such that it is known as The Nyerere National Park as a way of honoring President Julius Nyerere who was the first president of Tanzania. Today the boundaries of this Nyerere National Park are being properly established but according to sources it is believed that this park will encompass the photographic sector in the northern part of the reserve and stretch out all the way to the wilderness area of River Rufiji to the south. See how much a Tanzania safari costs .

Where is Selous Game Reserve Located?

The reserve is located in the southern part of Tanzania along the southern Tanzania safari circuit and offers the best escape from the large tourist crowds in the northern safari destinations like Serengeti while offering you a remarkable wildlife experience. It is considered to be among the hidden gems in the county and offers a wide range of Selous Game Reserve Camps for accommodation. The reserve is located about 219 kilometers from the busy city of Dar es salaam and may take about 4 hours drive. Selous Game Reserve has a new name, Nyerere National Park Tanzania .

Regions of Selous Game Reserve

Selous Game Reserve is crossed by River Rufiji (which is the largest river in the country) in the center and forms a network of swamps, channels and lakes to create a very unique ecological system. The reserve is separated into 2 major sections by the river which are the northern and southern Selous. The Northern Selous: this region covers just about 5% of the total area of the reserve and hunting is completely prohibited in this area which has been exclusively set aside for photographic safaris. See, the best time to visit . The southern Selous : the southern part of the river is separated into various hunting blocks each covering an area of approximately 1,000 square kilometers however we emphasize that we do not operate or even support wildlife hunting.

The Selous is teeming with wildlife. With over 2000 species of flora, 440 bird species, and a wide range of animal species. It’s also home to one of the largest concentration of elephants on the continent. As well as the largest population of buffalo in Africa.

Boat cruises

Tourists approach a herd of elephants on a boat safari, Selous

The permanent waterways and channels spread like veins throughout the reserve. There are river safari cruises all year round in the Selous, setting it apart from any other reserve or park in Tanzania .

On the reserve, there are hot volcanic springs, channels, and sporadic lakes from the nearby rivers. The Great Ruaha and Rufiji rivers add an incredible setting of abundant wildlife near the edges of the water.

The Rufiji River attracts large herds of elephants . This river flows through the reserve and provides one of the most popular safari boat trips.

Game drive safaris

Breakfast pause on a morning safari game drive, Selous

Walking safaris

Mom yellow baboon carrying her baby on her back

Taking a safari in one of the most remote reserves in Africa is as close to nature as it gets. A walking safari provides the ultimate bush experience accompanied by expert trackers and guides. This is something not offered or possible in northern Tanzania’s game reserves and national parks.

Note: In most lodges, children need to be over the ages of 12 years to join a walking safari. At Lake Manze River Camp and Impala River Camp, children need to be over the ages of 6 years old to stay at one of these campsites. And over the ages of 16 years to join a walking safari.

These trips allow you to take a unique look into the Maasai’s unique tribal way of life and culture.

Best Time of Year to Visit Selous, Tanzania

Selous Game Reserve is a dry season park. This means the safaris progressively get better later in the season. So the best time to visit the Selous Game Reserve is from June to October .

During the dry season, wildlife is easier to spot . Animals gather near water sources, and the vegetation is thinner. One of the popular areas for animal sightings is the Rufiji River.

Keep in mind, this time of year is peak season , and prices are much higher. The dry season provides little to no rain and plenty of sunshine.

During the low season (wet period), which runs from March to May , the prices are more competitive. Accommodation can be tricky during the low season as many lodges close due to fewer visitors.

Thanks to abundant rainfall, the landscape is filled with greenery. Bird watching this time of year is world-class as migratory birds flock together.

Where to Stay in Selous Game Reserve

Siwandu Safari Camp is a stylish tented camp and arguably in the best area of the park. It’s nestled on the Rufiji River banks amongst the dense forest.

Nearby to Siwandu Camp is Lake Manze Camp , an adventurous camp with a reputation for being an elephant highway. A little further is the sister camp, the luxury Selous Impala Camp .

Other popular camps in the park include Foxes’  Rufiji River Camp  and Selous Mbuyu Safari Camp .

No matter where you stay in Selous, you will get amazing value in luxury lodges.

Malaria and Safety in the Selous Tanzania Reserve

When going on a wildlife safari, following instructions from your expert guide will ensure safety. Although serious incidents on organized safaris rarely occur.

There is a risk of malaria throughout the country. This excludes high altitude areas over 2000 m, such as Mt. Kilimanjaro , some parts of the Eastern Arc Mountains, and the Ngorongoro Crater .

Most of the safari parks in Tanzania are high-risk zones, especially during the rainy season. To protect yourself, wear long-sleeve clothing in the evenings and apply mosquito repellent .

Plan Your Visit to the Selous Reserve

Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is Tanzania’s largest national park. The lifeblood of this vast wilderness is the mighty Rufiji River and a network of interconnected lakes. The abundant water supports huge numbers of crocodiles and hippos , which you’ll get scarily close to on boat trips, and also attracts plenty of elephants, buffalo and other wildlife. Early morning game drives offer the best chance to see some lion action.

Pros & Cons

  • Top wildlife viewing in the Dry season
  • Walking and boat safaris are available
  • Excellent selection of mid-range and luxury lodges
  • Small wildlife-viewing circuit
  • Animals are scattered during the Wet season
  • The northern section of the park gets busy with day visitors

Nyerere NP Safari Reviews

  • Expert Rating 4.2 /5 – 11 Reviews
  • User Rating 4.7 /5 – 86 Reviews

The variety of wildlife to be seen in Nyerere isn’t quite on a par with Ruaha or Serengeti National Parks, but you’re likely to see big herds of buffalo and elephant. Masai giraffes are very common too. Impalas are abundant and you’ll see lots of greater kudus with their magnificent spiral horns as well. Nyerere is a stronghold for the rare sable antelope and one of the main attractions of the park is the chance to encounter wild dogs .

  • More about Nyerere NP's wildlife

Nyerere is an important part of the massive cross-country 155,000km²/60,000mi² Greater Selous-Niassa ecosystem. Its main habitat is dense miombo woodland , but the main wildlife-viewing circuit follows a string of five connected lakes fed by the Rufiji, one of Africa’s great rivers. Its palm-fringed channels attract loads of wildlife in the Dry season and its sandbanks are permanently filled with monstrous crocodiles.

Nyerere’s unusually diverse range of activities means that it offers arguably the most rounded bush experience of any Tanzanian national park. Game drives are rewarding for predator sightings, while boat trips on the Rufiji River and associated lakes offer utterly compelling water-based wildlife viewing. Guided walking safaris and night drives both add further dimensions to the wilderness experience. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can sleep under the stars on a fly-camping trip.

Nyerere experiences almost uniform temperatures throughout the year because of its equatorial location. It is mostly very hot and humid, but the Dry season (June to October) is slightly cooler than the Wet season (November to May).

  • More about the weather and climate

The Dry season (June to October) is the best time to travel to Nyerere. This is when animals converge on the Rufiji River and its associated wetlands, and the dry bush is sparse enough for views of the wildlife to be relatively unobscured. If you do visit in the wetter months, be aware that numerous lodges close their doors from April to May.

Selous Game Reserve

Banner image

Once one of the world’s biggest game reserves, Selous has recently been split up to accommodate the new Nyerere National Park in honour of Tanzania’s first President Julius Nyerere. Together, the parks cover around 50,000 square kilometres in southern Tanzania, an area several times the size of the Serengeti.

Selous, at a glance

The Selous Game Reserve is off the beaten path , and only 1% of Tanzania’s tourists heading down to this part of the country.

It is often seen as one of Africa’s last true wilderness areas - its savannah spans as far as you can see, and you can go days without ever seeing a car or another traveller.

One of the best sights within this game reserve is the Rufiji River , a gigantic river with a high density of crocodiles and hippos. Together with the Great Ruaha River, it creates a river delta, making for formidable game viewing and some of the most exciting boat safaris in East Africa.

History of Selous

The Selous Game Reserve was first designated as an area for protection in 1896 by the German Governor of Tanganyika Hermann von Wissmann.

In 1905, it was developed into a hunting reserve and in 1922 received its name - Selous Game Reserve - and was formally founded (its use as a hunting reserve is no long over).

It was named after the famous hunter and friend of colonialist Cecil Rhodes, Frederick Courtney Selous. He died in 1917 at the hand of a German sniper and was buried in the game reserve in Beho Beho.

Only in the 1940s did it reach such a huge size, and in 1982 it was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site . In 2019, the Tanzanian government under President Magufuli carved out a sizable chunk of the territory to create a new national park, put under the control of TANAPA, the national park agency.

President Magufuli also planned the erection of a mega dam to support surrounding villages with hydroelectricity. This decision has been hugely criticized by conservationists and economists alike.

Wildlife in Selous Game Reserve

Selous boasts some of the best wildlife densities in Tanzania .

The reserve has 40,000 hippos, 120,000-150,000 buffalo, 100,000 wildebeests, and 35,000 zebras inhabit an  area the size of Denmark.

The sheer amount of prey attracts a diversity of predators including 4,000 lions, as well as leopards, hyenas and crocodiles. Some rarer species include the African wild dog, of which 50% of its population live in Selous, as well as the sable and puku antelopes.

It is also one of the few places in Africa where the endangered black rhino can be found . Bird enthusiasts will also cherish this place, as 440 different species of bird populate this area. These can best be discovered by a boat safari.

How to get to Selous Game Reserve

There are several options for reaching this remote bit of wilderness. The most convenient option is by plane from Dar es Salaam, or the next big national park,  Ruaha .

Dar es Salaam to Selous is about 45 minutes by small plane , while from Ruaha it would take around 90 minutes.

By car, this journey takes considerably longer but offers great views. From Dar es Salaam it is a 4-6 hour drive, and you pass by the equally stunning Mikumi National Park , getting two adventures for one.

For adventurers, there is also the unique opportunity to take the train. The TAZARA train line, running from Dar es Salaam all the way to Zambia, can be taken to Selous. The journey takes 4-5 hours and offers stunning views and a unique experience of seeing wildlife directly from the train. The train is notoriously late, though!

When to visit Selous Game Reserve

Like most national parks in Tanzania, the dry season from June to October is perfect for game viewing, as the vegetation is more sparse, making it easier to spot animals.

March to May and late October to mid-December is the rainy season, which makes many of the roads impassable and animals harder to spot.

For bird enthusiasts, we also recommend the shorter dry season from mid-December to March , as many migratory birds then settle in Selous. If the scarce wild dog is what you are after, June to August is perfect, as this is their denning season.

Things to do in the Selous Game Reserve

There are a number of ways to explore the park, including game drives, river rafting safaris, boat cruises, fishing and walking safaris.

Hot air balloon safaris and fly camping are also possible.

Bird enthusiasts can watch the 440 species from a boat , also taking in views of hippo pods and crocodiles, waiting for prey.

Accommodation options in Selous Game Reserve

Selous has a variety of lodges dotted around the park, many of them sustainable eco-hotels.

The park’s vastness creates that miles-from-anywhere experience, and you'll feel like you're truly in the middle of the African bush.

Usually, there are no more than 300 visitors sleeping in the 50,000-square-kilometre park at any one time.

Selous Game Reserve

Simpler options

Selous Kulinda Camp : this simple but beautifully decorated camp is located close to the river with 14 spacious tents, a pool, and a stunning dining deck looking right over the Rufiji river. It’s technically outside the reserve, but the game reserve can be reached within just 20 minutes.

Lake Manze Tented Camp : this eco-friendly tented camp has 12 tents and is located next to a lake. In the evening you can enjoy sundowners around the bonfire.

Selous Game Reserve

Mid-range lodges

Rufiji River Camp : this recently re-designed lodge is also at the river, and has 11 tents and 3 suites. The camp has all the amenities you could hope to find in a remote safari camp.

Selous Impala : this hotel is reasonably priced and can easily compete with its much more expensive neighbours in service and style. They also offer the opportunity to go fly-camping.

Selous Game Reserve

High-end accommodation

Siwandu : in proximity to the Lake Siwanda, this lodge is pure luxury. 10 tents and a beautiful pool invite customers to come enjoy wildlife from the doorstep. You can also book out this place on an exclusive basis.

Roho ya Selous : the name means the heart of Selous , and a descriptor that truly expresses the style and location of this lodge. It has 8 tents, and a pool to refresh yourself after a game drive.

Beho Beho : this small lodge is one of the oldest and actually does not have tents, but 8 bandas (huts) and thatched cottages. The family that owns Beho Beho also lives on the property, helping forge a home away from home feel.

Kiba Point : Kiba Point is as exclusive as it gets in Selous. Four separate rooms also have private plunge pools as well as a communal pool. The hotel offers exclusive hire, fly camping and trips to natural hot springs, as well as other sights.

Sand Rivers : this lodge places a lot of importance on sustainability. Fly camping is offered by the lodge. 8 cottages allow the lodge to feel exclusive and private. Most of them have a view over the Rufiji River, so you can enjoy watching hippos and crocodiles from the comfort of your bed.

Selous Game Reserve

A selous safari, the selous is also about exclusivity.

With a name that conjures up imagery of exploration, tented camps and abundant wildlife, it is reassuring to know that the Selous Game Reserve still delivers on all counts. One of the world’s largest and wildest conservation areas, the Selous is home to healthy populations of Africa’s biggest animals and stands as the showpiece on Tanzania’s ‘southern safari circuit’ .

A Selous safari takes you in search of elephant and buffalo herds, the latter often shadowed by lions and ever-attendant hyenas. Africa’s other big predators are there too: leopard, cheetah and wild dog as well as giraffe, zebra and many antelope species. It is a birding paradise with well over 400 species on record, and a good place to see river life – hippos and crocodiles in particular.

Accommodation is set along riverbanks and next to lakes, ensuring fine views and game viewing from the comfort of your suite. Standards of cuisine and service are high and most lodges have a swimming pool but you will want to get out and explore with your guide. Selous is Big 5 country and your morning and afternoon game drives are balanced with guided walks and boat safaris to give you a comprehensive wildlife experience. Several Selous camps have larger accommodation units that sleep up to four – ideal for families though we recommend travelling to the Selous with children only aged 12 and over.

A Selous safari is also about exclusivity. Many camps are small and secluded which makes them ideal for romantic travel. And because the reserve is barely visited compared to destinations such as the Serengeti , Masai Mara and Ngorongoro Crater , there are few, if any, other vehicles during your game drive – great for unconstructed wildlife sightings and photography.

Generally part of a southern circuit tour with destinations such as Ruaha National Park , a Selous safari is recommended for safari travellers who have experienced the northern circuit destinations of the Tarangire , Serengeti and Ngorongoro .

You can however easily combine Selous Reserve with the Serengeti National Park , giving you the opportunity to match the wild Selous with the drama of the wildebeest migration, the Serengeti calving season or the  great migration river crossing . You can also connect with Zanzibar and enjoy the indulgence of a tropical beach holiday, an easy add-on from Selous. Browse our itinerary ideas or simply contact us for a tailor-made tour.

Overlooking lakes or the reserve’s Rufiji River, Selous lodges make the most of their waterside location to offer boat safaris as an alternative to a game drive, a great way to see wildlife during the dry season & highly recommended for birders.

With around 440 species on the checklist, the Selous Reserve is an excellent bird-watching destination all year round. Make sure you go on a river cruise to see concentrations of water birds on sandbanks & river islands.

Our experience with Safari Online was excellent. After becoming very frustrated trying to search for a safari destination on our own, we turned to Karina for help and she was a lifesaver.  We had an amazing safari adventure at the lodge–the experience of a lifetime–and are so grateful for her help. We literally couldn’t have done it without her!

Safari Online understood our needs and was able to present us with sensible options to choose from. It was evident that this tour operator has knowledgable and experienced agents who can arrange a seemless tour. We were provided with a professional online itinary which was comprehensive and easy to use, knew exactely what to expect, and encountered no stumble blocks along the way.

Safari Online have been nothing but professional and incredible from the time we made our first enquiry to the last day of our stunning holiday. Nothing was too much trouble for Walter. We are now starting to plan our next family Safari for 2019. Guess who we will be booking with??? Safari Online we hope you are ready!!!!!

Our mom grew up in Central and South Africa so we had visited the continent many times. My sister and I wanted to take our teens and husbands to Africa to experience the magic. We had a limited budget but big and specific expectations and by some miracle Walter was able to manage both.

Communication was excellent – I asked A LOT of questions and did a ton of research myself and Walter was extremely patient with me and very responsive. he was straight forward and extremely professional. Tour itself was excellent – an incredible experience and one never to be forgotten. Everything was spot on.

Would highly recommend. Safari online asked questions when booking and were efficient and knew exactly what we were looking for in terms of accommodation and animals were wanted to see. Gave advice on a few little extras with no pressure, which we did and am very grateful which make trip even more exciting. Would definitely recommend booking with them.

Our 28-day itinerary took us to South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana. A magnificent and unforgettable adventure. Everything ran smoothly and efficiently from the flights, transfers, rides, connections, etc. Absolutely wonderful! Can’t thank them enough!

Excellent service and they supplied good suggestions for our holiday they also organised all internal flights and arranged check in for us so we had no worries while on holiday. We have had a most memorable holiday staying at wonderful places thanks to Sabrina and Safari Online. Would recommend Safari Online to organise your holiday.

From the very first contact we’re very happy about the respond time and quality of information from safari-online.com. Based on the received first tailor-made quote, which is a weblink with all the details about the flights, photos of the lodges etc. we knew that this is “our” partner for this trip. Our expectations were excelled!!!

We have been to Africa for 24 of the last 27 years so know a bit about what is involved. Walter has arranged the details for the last couple of years, and has done a superb job. He is always quick to respond and comes up with answers immediately……..no evasive tactics, always head-on!

Get to know Tanzania beyond the Serengeti: visit the Selous for walking or boating safaris, big cats and plenty of plains game

Selous, like Ruaha National Park, is one of Tanzania’s best second-time safari destinations, with the focus on walking, plains game vistas and – if you’re lucky –  cats, rhino and wild dog. What’s left of the Selous Game Reserve today is the wonderful Rufiji River and everything north of it, including the vast spaces downstream of Stiegler’s Gorge. You need more time here to see the same number of species as you would in the north, but the river and boating experience are well worth it. You might find the scarce Pel’s fishing owl if you go as far upstream towards Stiegler’s Gorge as possible – and luck is on your side.

SELOUS GAME RESERVE

One of the largest and most beautiful safari parks in Tanzania is the Selous Wildlife Reserve , otherwise known as the Selous Game Reserve , the largest wildlife park in southern Tanzania, boasting an incredible 54,600 km 2 .

Selous Reserve is one of the least visited reserves in Tanzania, despite the rich flora and fauna that characterize it.

Characteristics of Selous Park

The reserve covers an area of considerable size, within which are not allowed dwellings or permanent structures, just like Ruaha Park. Admissions of people and tourists are thoroughly recorded and controlled by the Wildlife Division of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism of Tanzania.

Selous Park is home to the most famous animals of the Miombo (a forest composed mainly of plants of the genus Brachystegia that covers the savannahs of Africa), such as hippos, Cape buffaloes, zebras, black rhinos and African elephants in significantly more numbers than any other national park in Tanzania or any African hunting reserve.

Selous Wildlife Reserve Animals

Selous Wildlife Reserve Animals

A large area of the park along the Rufiji River is now used as a photographic spot for safaris, increasingly becoming a popular tourist destination for safari enthusiasts. Lodges and tent camps have sprung up to welcome the large number of tourists, especially around the river and lake areas.

What to see in Selous

This vast Wildlife Reserve offers many wonderful attractions that deserve to be seen and explored. Among these are:

  • The Rufiji River, which flows past Mafia Island
  • The Stiegler Gorge, a canyon 100 meters wide and deep
  • The acacia prairies and savannahs
  • Miombo forests
  • Hiking Safari
  • Boat trips on River Rufiji to explore the wonderful views around it.
  • A unique amount of animals (there are about 30,000 elephants, 200,000 giraffes and 420 different species of birds)

Within the Park is an impressive number of animals typical of Tanzania, although the animal density is lower than in northern parks such as Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Tarangire.

A big plus for the Selous Game Reserve is that it is one of the few reserves in Tanzania where walking safaris are allowed. You will have the opportunity to enjoy three different types of safaris – on foot, by Jeep and by boat – during our safari itinerary in Selous, for a unique experience.

Selous Game Reserve – Guide to the Last Great Wilderness

Split Top with Sidebar

Selous Game Reserve is the biggest game reserve in Africa, a vast, untouched wilderness. The reserve is home to some of the highest densities of animals in the world and covers an area larger than Switzerland. This is one of few places in Africa where you can drive a whole day without seeing another vehicle, surrounded by pristine nature.

The Rufiji River is the lifeline of the reserve creating wetlands, swamps, woody grasslands and miombo woodlands. Take a boat safari along the crocodile-infested waters or search for some of the last remaining wild dogs and black rhinos on the planet.

I took an idyllic boat ride along the Rufiji River a few months ago and it was an unforgettable experience. I nearly broke social media from all the pictures I took and posted online.

In this article, I'll give you the best hacks on what makes Selous so special, the diverse landscape of Selous, the costs of a Selous safari, the best time to go to Selous, how to get to Selous, budget and luxury accommodation options for Selous, the abundant wildlife in Selous, and fun activities in Selous.

Let's get started!

Tanzania safari map by Mountain IQ

Before we dive into the Selous Game Reserve FAQs, why not familiarise yourself first with our super-helpful map of Tanzania above? As you'll see, Selous Game Reserve is in Southern Tanzania and 140km (roughly 87 miles) from Nyerere National Park, its neighbour.

Now, let's dive into the Selous Game Reserve FAQs!

Selous Game Reserve FAQs

Why is selous game reserve so famous .

Selous Game Reserve is famous for a number of reasons. For one, it's the biggest wildlife conservancy area in all of Africa. Second of all, it contains some of the world's largest number of animal populations like elephants, black rhinos, cheetahs and giraffes.

Located on Tanzania’s less crowded southern safari circuit, Selous Game Reserve covers an immense area of 50,000 square kilometres (roughly 19,000 square miles. That’s twice the size of Serengeti National Park . In 1982, Selous Game Reserve was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Originally a hunting reserve, Selous was named after Frederick Selous (pronounced as se-loos ) a big game hunter and conservationist who extensively explored East Africa. Selous died in 1917 when he was shot near Beho Beho camp during the First World War. In 1922, five neighbouring reserves were combined to create Selous Game Reserve.

Are Selous Game Reserve and Nyerere National Park the Same Thing?

The northern part of Selous Game Reserve is now officially called Nyerere National Park. It was named in honour of Tanzania’s first president, Julius Nyerere . Nyerere National Park includes the Rufiji river and buffer zone to the south of the watercourse. The park is still widely known as Selous Game Reserve.

Which parts of Selous Game Reserve can I visit?

You can visit all parts of Selous Game Reserve as there is so much to see in the way of wildlife and unique ecosystems.

The landscape of Selous Game Reserve is divided into four key areas:

Northern Selous

Southern selous, rufiji river, stiegler's gorge.

North Selous, or Nyerere National Park, is a no-hunt zone. The region is great for photographic tourism. This piece makes up 8% of the total reserve and is a visitor-friendly location for all accommodation and safari activities.

The southern side is the bigger part of the reserve which is divided into blocks and leased as private hunting concession areas. Safari tours do not operate in this region of the game reserve.

Tanzania’s largest river, the Rufiji River , defines the landscape of the reserve by providing a year-round water supply and creating a diversity of habitats. The slow meandering river and its tributaries form swamps, palm-fringed channels and lakes while seasonal flooding creates rich grasslands. The smaller Kilombero and Ruaha rivers also cross the reserve.

Stiegler’s Gorge is a 5-mile long (8km) and 330 ft (100 m) deep canyon along the lower reaches of the Rufiji river in the north of Selous. The gorge is named after a Swiss explorer who was killed there by an elephant in the early 1900s. This is also the site for the controversial new dam and hydraulic power plant in the park. Conservation authorities fear the dam will have long-lasting negative impacts on biodiversity and the communities downstream.

Please Note: Construction of the power plant is underway. You may experience more traffic in the form of heavy trucks along the dusty access roads to Stiegler’s Gorge.

How much does a safari to Selous Game Reserve cost?

The cost of a Selous Game Reserve safari ranges from $400 per person per day to $1500 per person per day . These costs also include other travel expenses like flights, car rentals, accommodation and meals.

I recommend that you also take advantage of safari tour packages where certain locations (including other southern national parks like Ruaha and Mikumi), specialised activities (hot air balloon flights and game drives) and a guided tour are included in the overall price.

See more info on the average cost of safaris in Tanzania and how to find the best Tanzanian safari operator for your next great adventure.

Which tour? Here are 5 Selous safari tours I recommend:

  • Tanzania Nyerere Budget Safari (3 days)
  • Southern Big Five Safari (incl. Mikumi) (6 days)
  • Best of Selous Safari (incl. Ruaha and Mikumi)  (8 days)

When is the best time to visit Selous Game Reserve?

The best time to visit Selous Game Reserve is during the dry season , which is from June to October .

Here is a complete breakdown of the seasons in southern Tanzania and what to expect while visiting Selous Game Reserve:

Selous-Game-Reserve-Weather-Climate

Dry Season (June - October)

As with most  Tanzanian national parks , dry months (June-October) are best for game viewing in Selous. Thankfully, the reserve remains relatively crowd-free over this peak period.

Animals do not migrate away from the north during the year as they have consistent food and water sources in Selous.

Wet Season (November - March)

The rainy season is November till March. If you plan on visiting the reserve during this time, note that some roads may be flooded.

malaria-kilimanjaro-map

Humidity is also higher, bringing along more mosquitos. Some camps close over this part of the season.

Please note: Malaria is a risk in Tanzania, so consult your doctor about medication options before setting off. Make sure to pack a first aid kit with necessities including band-aids, headache tablets and diarrhea medication.

What is the best way to get to Selous Game Reserve?

The best way to get to Selous Game Reserve is by airplane. It's quicker and more comfortable than travelling by car over.

With that said, here are some added tips for getting to Selous Game Reserve by driving or taking flights.

Travelling by Road

By car, it is a 4-5 hour or 136-mile (219km) drive from Dar Es Salaam. The route goes through Mikumi National Park and enters Selous Game Reserve through Matambwe Gate. The last 50 miles of this drive is on a bumpy gravel road.

Because of the long drive, many guests prefer to fly into Selous. A trip in a small aircraft from Dar Es Salaam will take 45 minutes, or 90 minutes alternatively from the airstrip in Ruaha National Park .

Where can I stay in or near Selous Game Reserve?

There are plenty of places to stay in and near Selous Game Reserve where you can put up your feet. There's something for everyone in the way of Tanzanian budget accommodation as well as more high-end accommodation for a visit to Selous.

Where to stay? Here are 5 of my favourite accommodation options in Selous:

  • Africa Safari Selous Nyerere National Park (near Selous' Mtemere main gate and airstrip)
  • Serena Mivumo River Lodge (near Selous' Mtemere main gate)
  • Selous Kinga Lodge (near the Rufiji River)
  • Baker Safari Company (near the Rufiji River)
  • Sable Mountain Lodge, A Tent with a View Safaris (in the Beho Hills of Northern Selous)

Most high-end accommodation is located in the north of the reserve close to the river. There are fewer accommodation options than northern Tanzania but camps here are of the highest quality and strive for low environmental impact.

See more info on how a camping safari in Tanzania can help you appreciate Selous' beautiful landscape.

Mid-Range Accommodation

Lake-Manze-Selous-Game-Reserve

Lake Manze Selous Camp

The no-frills Lake Manze Camp is known for good elephant sightings. Its sister camp Impala is slightly more luxurious but still affordable.

Sable Mountain Lodge outside Matambwe Gate and Beho Beho in the northern part of the reserve are also budget-friendly with options of stone cottages or tented bandas.

Luxury Accommodation

selous-river-camp

Selous River Camp

Siwandu Camp and Sand River Camp on the banks of River Rufiji are more pricey but luxurious and at perfect locations for game viewing.

See more info on why choosing a luxury safari lodge in Tanzania might be a good fit for you.

What animals can I see at Selous Game Reserve?

You can see all kinds of animals at Selous Game Reserve. It has some of the highest animal numbers on earth, and they are well spread out over this immense landscape. Selous’s characteristic miombo woodland is more concealing than the open plains of the Serengeti. Even so, you are likely to check off most of the animals on your list plus some that are special to this reserve.

Elephants of Selous Game Reserve

Historically, Selous Game Reserve had the biggest population of  elephants  in the world. Sadly, rampant poaching over the last 50 years has reduced this population by a shocking 90%.

But even with the dramatic decrease, elephants still roam the reserve and sightings are regular. Over the decades, renowned organisations like UNESCO and the WWF have a played a vital role in reducing poaching in the region to protect these majestic large mammals.

Elephant-with-baby

Selous Game Reserve is one of the best places to see  wild dogs . About 900 of the world’s 6000 remaining wild dogs can be found here. Also called painted dogs, these canines are some of the most successful predators with 80% of their hunts ending in a kill.

Black Rhinos

The park has one of Tanzania’s last remaining populations of endangered  Black rhino . These shy animals prefer dense bushes where they are well hidden.

Rare Antelope

Selous is home to the largest populations of  puku   antelope  which graze the flooded grasslands of the park. The reserve also has good numbers of  sable antelope , often seen around the northern parts of the reserve. Lichtenstein’s hartebeest   is unique to the miombo woodlands found here.

This is a great place to see big pride of  lions  and males with impressively sized manes. The reserve also has one of the highest concentrations of  cheetahs.

Leopards  are rarely sighted but you may pick up tracks or other signs of these elusive cats on a guided walk.

Other animals in Selous Game Reserve

A boat trip down the Rufiji River will get you close to some of the thousands of resident hippos  and  crocodiles .

It is highly unlikely that you will visit Selous Game Reserve without seeing a giraffe, there are around 40, 000 of them! The diverse habitats are also home to  waterbuck ,  greater kudu ,  wildebeest ,  eland ,  impala ,  plains zebra,   Cape buffalo ,  hyena  and primates including  baboons ,  colobus monkeys and vervet monkeys .

Birdwatching

There are around  445 bird species in the Selous Game Reserve. The river system is particularly rich in bird diversity. Look out for crimson flocks of carmine bee-eaters clustered on the muddy sandbanks while pink-backed pelicans, African skimmers and squacco herons stalk the water edge and fish eagles, kingfishers patrol the open waters. At dusk, you may just spot a rare Pel’s fishing owl coming out to hunt.

The Udzungwa forest partridge  and delicate  rufous winged sunbird are endemic species to this area.

What activities are there in Selous Game Reserve?

Selous Game Reserve has the biggest range of activities of all Tanzania’s parks. If traditional safaris aren't your thing, there's always scenic and cultural tours that you can enjoy during your stay.

Game drives

Head out with an experienced guide who knows the landscape and animals. Predators and prey escape the midday heat under shady trees so take a drive before 11 am or after 3 pm for the best sightings.

lake-manze-boat-safari

A unique option for a safari, river cruises on the Rufiji River is a chance to get close to the many hippos and crocodiles on these waterways. Choices range from sunset cruises to half-day trips.

Walking Safaris

You will never feel closer to nature than on a guided foot safari. Appreciate the little things and learn about tracks and signs.

Fly Camping Tours

A number of camps offer adventurous visitors the experience of sleeping beneath basic tents in the wilderness. An armed ranger and guide will keep you safe as you listen to lions roar and swap stories around a blazing fire.

Cultural Tour

Take a guided tour to the nearby Mwaseni Village. Always ask permission and be sensitive about photographing people.

Hot Air Ballooning

selous game reserve safari

Sheltered in a grove of palms on the shores of Lake Nzerakera, part of the watery byways of the Rufiji River system, Siwandu is perfectly situated to experience fully the breathtaking landscape and variety of wildlife of the Nyerere National Park (formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve). An area of 30,893 km2 (11,928 sq mi) in the northern part of the well-known Selous Game Reserve, just South of Dar es Salaam, was portioned off for inclusion in TANAPA’s portfolio of national parks in 2019. It is now one of the world’s largest wildlife sanctuaries at twice the size of Belgium. Nyerere has over 2,100 species of plants, in excess of 400 varieties of birds, more than half of Tanzania’s elephant population and over 120,000 buffalos. The Park's 40,000 hippo and 4,000 lion are probably the largest populations on the continent; not to mention the fact that it is home to the planet’s largest population of rare wild dogs. This resplendence gives guests a rare opportunity to glimpse all of these animals in truly unspoilt landscape.

Broadly spaced along the lakeshore, Siwandu’s superbly-appointed accommodation ensures maximum privacy and invites you to soak up the sights and sounds of Nyerere.  From either of the wooden-decked verandas, sit with a cup of tea at sunrise, watching the bush come to life, or relax with a gin and tonic as the bush blushes under sunset.

THE ACCOMMODATION

The 13 spacious octagonal tents of canvas and secure mosquito netting, topped in thatch, not only allows for constant air-flow, but also enables guests to gaze upon the animals as they saunter past. Observe them, perhaps whilst reclining on the majestic king-sized bed under the overhead fan, or from the open-air stargazer, solar-heated showers which adjoin the en suite bathrooms.

dining & amenities

Our elevated lounge and dining area, offer panoramic views across the lake as you enjoy a drink from our well-stocked bar or sample our chef's fine cuisine.    Perhaps you may wish to take a plunge in our shaded pool and recline on the sun lounger for the perfect "armchair safari".

  • Family Safari Escapes: Discovering the Best National Parks in Tanzania

Planning a Family Escapade in Tanzania — A vast country, much like the vastness of its national parks.

Moreover, it is a top destination for incredible family safaris. Where families can enjoy the thrill of adventure and become one with nature & wildlife, the different regions will offer you as many surprises as each other.

During your family trip to Tanzania, you have a golden chance to immerse in the beauty of the wild and forge lasting connections with the natural world. How exciting is that?

The Marvels of Tanzania’s National Parks:

Few places can offer such varied and intensely beautiful scenery as Tanzania’s National Parks. Tanzania has 22 national parks managed by TANAPA(Tanzania National Parks Authority), including renowned names like Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, harboring species from African elephants to elusive leopards and giraffes.

These parks are wildlife sanctuaries that significantly conserve the country’s rich biodiversity, containing more than 20% of Africa’s large mammal population.

Also contributing to Tanzania’s economy through eco-tourism by attracting global visitors to an annual spectacle involving millions of wildebeests, zebras, and other animals migrating journeying across the plains, sustaining a delicate balance of predator-prey life chain and serving as a natural marvel.

Navigating Family Safari Planning:

Tarangire national park , serengeti national park, ngorongoro conservation area, ruaha national park, selous game reserve, mount kilimanjaro national park, faqs about tanzania and its national parks.

Ensuring everything goes smoothly for a successful family adventure where everyone has a fantastic time.

But how do you make it awesome?

First, consider when you want to go on your safari adventure. You’ll want to aim for the dry seasons, usually between June & October or from December to Feb. During these times, the weather is just right, and the animals are near water sources, making it easier to spot them.

Now, about the weather in the big parks up north, like Serengeti, Tarangire, and Manyara have a warm high-altitude climate about 1,500 meters above sea level. Hence, it’s pretty warm but not too hot. Jan, Feb, and March are the hottest months which could be perfect if you see animals in action during the warmer times. But watch out for April – it’s the rainiest month. On the flip side, August is the driest.

So we’ve got the timing down. Let’s move on to something more important: keeping everyone healthy and comfy. You’ll want to sort out your transportation and make sure you’ve got any needed health precautions covered. This might include vaccinations or medications to stay safe and sound during your adventure.

And speaking of adventure, you’ll want to ensure you’ve got the right tour operator and safari guide to make your experience top-notch. Safari companies are experts at ensuring families like yours have a fantastic time. They know how to plan things just right so that everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, has a blast and creates memories that’ll last a lifetime.

Tanzania’s Best National Parks For Family Safaris

Tarangire is recognizable because it is made up of forests of acacias and giant baobabs, with huge areas of marshland. During the dry season, you can admire beautiful landscapes. The land is red and dusty & the grass is parched and yellow, and the Tarangire River is very narrow.

On the contrary, the plains are green during the rainy season, with an imposing river and many animals regaining their strength.

This park’s no joke – it’s 2,600 square kilometers of animal-packed adventure, especially between August and January. And here’s the scoop: Tarangire is the place to be if you’re looking for critters that are a bit trickier to find in other northern parks.

Come June, this place will become the hangout spot for elks, oryxes, elephants, wildebeests, and zebras. They all gather around the river and the marshes to quench their thirst. And you won’t believe your eyes when you see elephants digging for water underground, using their hefty paws! It’s quite a sight to see!

Let’s get one fact straight: Serengeti’s wet season means fewer animals, except in the south, where the real action happens.

Driving in from Ngorongoro, it’s like stepping into a grassy savannah sprinkled with kopjes – those fancy granite rock formations. Venture a bit, and you’ll hit greener acacia savannah. Head north, and it’s all about hills. On the flip side, the Western Corridor, crisscrossed by rivers, spreads out to Lake Victoria.

May to June is a show-stopping period. That’s when the jaw-dropping wildebeest migration hits the stage. Imagine over a million of these creatures embarking on a great migration over 800 km from Tanzania to Kenya’s Maasai Mara , perfectly in tune with the rain’s rhythm. A staggering 2 million wildebeests and 300,000 zebras gather for a parade, making herds that stretch as far as 40 km.

Serengeti isn’t just a park; it’s a world-class zoo sprawled over 14,763 km² and home to Big 5 “Lions, leopards, elephants, black rhinos, and buffaloes”.

Ngorongoro is known for its volcano, gigantic crater, and thriving wildlife scene. The Ngorongoro Crater Protected Area is over 2 million years old and around 20 km in diameter. Also, the historic Olduvai Gorge is just 40km from the crater, where traces of humanity’s earliest days are found.

In Ngorongoro, prepare for a rich and diverse range of creatures. The Big 5, antelopes, cheetahs, and endangered black rhino – we’re talking around 30,000 animals. And also have over 400 bird species, including the elegant pink flamingos. Keep your eyes open for jackals, hyenas, and cheetahs.

And if you plan a family safari around July-August, you’ll enjoy some cool temperatures on the caldera’s edges. But remember, Ngorongoro is not only just a crater; it’s part of the grand Ngorongoro Protected Area, And it’s quite the tourism hub, hosting around 400,000 visitors annually.

The Ruaha River sustains the diverse animal community in Ruaha Park, which flows through its heart. This thriving community includes African elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, lions, hyenas, cheetahs, leopards, and the world’s third-largest population of wild dogs.

Ruaha is a hidden gem, not famous like other parks, but its reputation is rising. It remains a safari secret. You won’t have to battle huge crowds here, even during the peak/high season. Plus, it’s budget-friendly compared to more popular parks like the Serengeti.

And here you can also go for the walking safaris. But remember minimum age required for a walking safari is 16.

Nyerere National Park, previously called Selous Game Reserve, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Africa’s largest national park.

You can witness the unusual annual elephant migration as thousands of these majestic elephants cross the river. Also, you can take part in walking safaris, spot African wild dogs, and go on Elephant Migration Boat Safaris for memorable adventures.

Plan your visit between late June and October for prime wildlife viewing or from November to March to enjoy bird watching. Wildlife in the park ranges from elephants, African wild dogs, sables, kudus, &  waterbucks to hippos and crocodiles.

Nyerere National Park is a haven of nature and offers easy access to attractions like Zanzibar and Dar Es Salaam. It’s an excellent destination for an incredible adventure.

Mount Kilimanjaro National Park stands as a remarkable destination for an unforgettable family safari. Encompassing an expansive area of approximately 755 square miles, the park in Northeastern Tanzania shares a border with Kenya.

The park’s star attraction, Mount Kilimanjaro, is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. Known as the rooftop of Africa, it is the highest mountain (freestanding) in the world. Families need not be seasoned climbers to experience its splendor. Guided walks along various trails allow all family members to soak in the breathtaking scenery and the stunning views of the surrounding plains.

Besides its majestic mountain, the national park boasts a diverse array of animal species. Families can catch glimpses of elusive leopards, playful colobus monkeys, as well as antelopes, gazelles, lions, rhinos, and elephants.

Bird enthusiasts will be captivated by the dazzling spectacle of migratory birds, their vibrant colors brightening the park. Non-migratory species, including soaring eagles and graceful flamingos, grace the skies around Kilimanjaro, creating a spectacle that is truly unique.

The park is also home to a variety of activities and attractions. While some trails are designed for more experienced hikers, others are tailored to casual walkers or wheelchair access. Families can explore an array of caves, visit traditional villages, enjoy cultural tours, or just relax in one of the many lodges located within the park.

Tanzania is home to 22 national parks. Each park offers visitors a chance to experience the country’s unique wildlife, landscapes, and culture. The most famous of all the parks is Kilimanjaro National Park – famed for its iconic mountain peak – while others such as Serengeti National Park are renowned for their vast savannah plains and provide one of the best opportunities for game viewing.

The beauty of Tanzania’s parks is hard to measure. Each park has something unique to offer and is worth exploring. However, many visitors cite Serengeti National Park as the most beautiful. It is renowned for its breathtaking views, abundant wildlife, and wide-open plains.

Visitors can also explore Tarangire National Park for its acacia-filled savannah and incredible bird watching. Another popular destination is Selous Game Reserve, which is home to the world’s largest population of African elephants. Ultimately, visitors should explore each park for themselves to determine what makes it most beautiful.

The largest national park in Tanzania is Nyerere National Park, previously called Selous Game Reserve. Spanning over 55,000 square kilometers (21,000 sq mi), it is the largest protected wildlife area in Africa and one of the largest unfenced reserves in the world.

The park is known for its abundant African wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, antelope, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and more. Nyerere National Park offers a unique experience for visitors, where they can immerse themselves in the untouched African bush.

The least visited national park in Tanzania is Ruaha National Park. Located in south-central Tanzania, Ruaha is a relatively remote and untouched park that offers visitors an opportunity to explore the vast wilderness of East Africa.

The best time to travel to Tanzania is during the dry season, which typically runs from late June through October. During this period, temperatures are mild and the chances of rain are low, making it perfect for safaris and exploring the country’s national parks.

The warmest months are December through February, but these can also be very wet and humid. April and May are also good months to visit, since temperatures are more moderate.

The best time of year to go on safari in Tanzania is during the dry season, which typically runs from late June through October. This period offers the best combination of ideal weather conditions and prime game viewing opportunities. Days are hot but not too humid, while evenings can be cool.

Wildlife sightings are more frequent during this period due to less vegetation cover and the animals coming to the waterholes more often. Additionally, the dry season coincides with calving season for antelope, which makes it a great time to view baby wildebeests and zebras!

Tanzania is a very popular and sought-after destination for tourists due to its rich history, diverse culture, stunning landscapes, and unparalleled wildlife. It is home to 22 national parks and numerous game reserves that are filled with an amazing array of animals such as lions, elephants, zebras, giraffes, buffalos, cheetahs,  and more.

The country also boasts some of the world’s highest mountain peaks, including Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s tallest peak. Additionally, Tanzania is renowned for its welcoming people and vibrant cultures. From traditional Swahili villages to bustling cities like Dar es Salaam, there is something here for everyone!

It really depends on what you want to do and see! If you’re just looking for a quick getaway, then three to five days will give you enough time to explore the country’s main attractions. However, if you’d like to go on safari, or dive deep into its history and culture, then seven days or longer is recommended. There’s so much to discover and experience in Tanzania, you won’t want your time there to end!
